The Young Protectors: Legendary Chapter Two—Page 1

153 Comments on The Young Protectors: Legendary Chapter Two—Page 1

Welcome back, y’all! Here we are back with Chapter Two of “Legendary” after our first ever hiatus and I’ve missed you!

And a new chapter brings some fun, new art! Let’s all please extend a hearty welcome to special guest artist Tana Ford, who is taking over The Young Protectors‘  linework duties with this first page of Chapter Two (while Adam DeKraker continues his break before he returns again with Chapter Three.)

And let’s also extend a continued welcome to Veronica Gandini who continues her awesome coloring of The Young Protectors without break through this chapter.

I feel very lucky to be working with both Tana and Vero, and I’m excited to share their team up with you. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I have.

So! Chapter Two begins with a simple greeting between friends. It’s been a week since they’ve seen each other. Will they have anything more to say beyond “hey” and “hello”? Or does nothing really need to be said?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 🙂

  • Michael

Welcome to the TYP family, Tana! Love the art style you’re introducing. And Vero’s colouring is amazing, as always.

edit! woohoo! Been following/commenting for years, now I’ve finally got the ‘first comment’!

    • D. G.

      Congrats on the v.

  • Madock345

OMG they’re adorable. Love the new look. Welcome to the team Tana!

  • Songbird

I love this, everything about this.

Is Kyle making bootycall food? Because that’s hilarious

    • Michael

      Such a gentleman. XD

    • He’s making his speciality. (Which will be revealed shortly.)

      • davefragments

        {Bella Notte?}

      • Chris Dangerfield

At 18 I had one specialty and you were blessed if I made it, because my other cooking skills were pretty non-existent.

        • It is indeed possible that this is Kyle’s one specialty too…

  • davefragments

    And Spooky Blushes

    • Michael

I thought he was immune to blushing, to be honest.

      • davefragments

Apparently not … and we know from last chapter that Spooky really wants Kyle to be his lover.

      • Klaus

You were wrong about him. He is not invulnerable.

        • Michael

Okay, I literally laughed out loud then. Perfect response.

        • Well played, Klaus.

  • Brad Majors

I can’t decide which is cuter: what Kyle is wearing or how he just greeted Spooky.

Welcome, Tana! And welcome back, Alex and Vero! My week can feel complete again.

  • Dinglehopper

Oh hell yeah!!!! Also, welcome Tana!

  • timemonkey

    Liking the new art!

    • Glad to hear it, timemonkey! I’m really enjoying collaborating with Tana on this one.

  • Cman65

That how you say “Good-Morning” to someone you like

  • Saxon_Brenton

Hope that everyone (both creators and audience alike) had a good holiday break. Just got back from an optomotrist appointment that confirmed that I’m going longsighted, but that I can probably wait a few more years before I get reading glasses (I’ve noticed over the last few months that when I read in bed at night I need to sit the book on my stomach rather than my chest in order to be able to focus it properly).

Anyway. You know, that’s a more enthusiastic welcome from Kyle than I would have expected from the discussion that he and Spooky had in chapter 1. I may have to go back and re-read to see if I’ve misremembered or misinterpreted something. Anyway, interesting plot development.

However, I’m also looking at the art. Lovely stuff. And in particular, there’s some fanservice in the very first panel (those slightly too tight sweatpants that Kyle is wearing). You you boys and girls, I think Ms Ford might have been warned about us 🙂 I think she’ll fit in just nicely.

    • I think Tana will fit in quite nicely here too. 🙂 (And I am also farsighted which gave me a very long buffer before I needed those reading glasses. It’s a good thing. 🙂 )

  • Nirgal

Welcome aboard, Tana! Awesome art! And Vero is outstanding as always.

  • David Welbourn

It’s always interesting to see how new artists reinterpret old characters. And thank you for showing a bit of furniture and a bit of mess in panel one! It’s appreciated. Welcome to the comic, Tana.

    And welcome back, everyone else.

  • Klaus

The page has been up for five hours. There are only 16 comments. How unusual.

  • Jeldenil

Thank you so much, Tana. I like this style a lot.

    • Auntie Mumpsimus

      I am quite smitten.

  • Aw Spooky is so into Kyle <3. I hope he doesn't get hurt – or hurt too much 🙁

  • Kyle, sweetie, as eager and happy as Spooky arriving can excite a person… please tell me you took the food off the stove first…

    • Curt Clark

…are you sure he was using the stove? It is Kyle, after all…

    • It’s still on the stove. 🙂

  • bronakopdin

yay for the comic to be back x3
I hope everyone had a nice New Year celebration 😀
and I was successfully avoiding to google Tana’s art as I told myself and now am successfully amazed by it 😀
    Welcome to the club, Tana!

  • Saikkusukka

Oh jeepers, I’m blushing like a school girl.
This style hits me right where it should, I love it!

  • Of all days to be awake just long enough to switch alarm clock off, thinking ‘I’m awake enough to quit the snooze button’, only to fall back asleep within a minute after… this was a bad day to do so. Bad me.

What a page to return from a little hiatus on (also Spooky’s sexy trading card art as chapter 2 cover, in case anyone missed that). Tana starts out with quite a page. Looking forward to see more of her work/art.

  • Kyle has clearly worked himself into a very welcoming mood while waiting for Spooky to arrive *lol*

This is a great way to make sure Spooky is feeling great and warm, maybe even a little heated, after being outside. Because that would totally be why Kyle is doing this, right? xD
We know that Kyle is the best ‘heater’ Spooky got, always feeling cold.

I’m loving this very forward Kyle. No feeling of awkwardness or hesitation. I just hope he remembered to turn off the stove, and save their food. They may need the energy for later *ahem*

(Aka. I hope this evening won’t be interrupted, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop)

    • Curt Clark

Who says he was using the stove?

      • Michael

I don’t see any flames in panel 1, do you?

  • Concerto

XD it looks a little bit agressive ….

  • Jim Philbrick

sorry …..THAT was a boyfriend kiss

  • fujoshifanatic

Yay! Back to the old school grind after holiday break, but this makes it so much better! Happy New Year everyone; hope everyone had an awesome holiday season! Welcome Tana ! Your line work is lovely; looks like you will be a great addition to the TYP family! I think it’s cute that Kyle can make Spooky blush with his hello, and Kyle, honey, this is yet another clue you should be noticing to let you know Spooks is more into you than you think!

ETA: I just saw the teddy bear shirt; kawaiiiiiieee!!

  • Ruben

    Haha, cool!

  • Jason Wexler

    I like this already!

  • Curt Clark

Returning to the comments after a long break from the Internet for my sanity (though I’ve kept up with TYP the whole way through) —

This new style is a great take. It feels like a halfway point between Adam and Julie, and the heavy ink is an interesting contrast between the other two’s cleaner styles. I like it — especially since it means more TYP! ^_^

Story-wise, this is such a sudden change from the end of the last chapter that I’m actually kind of jarred. We ended with Spooky suffering because Kyle’s perception of him keeps them from becoming the kind of lovers he wants them to be (at least that was my interpretation) — and now Kyle’s acting like a real boyfriend, all up in Spooky’s lipspace and everything?

This isn’t a complaint mind you. It’s these kinds of interesting twists and ‘yeahbuhwhat?’ moments (thank you, Kitty Pryde) that hook me as a reader, espcially when Alex has such a good history of paying those off. I look forward to learning what changed, if anything at all.

Suffice it to say, I’m back.

    • Jim Philbrick

I was also taken aback by the kiss given the last panel of the last chapter…I loved the kiss of course just surprised given how the last chapter concluded….

    • Welcome back Curt!

    • Welcome back, Curt. Good to see you here. 🙂

  • GiovanniBoss

That art is awesome. I do think Julie got to a point where I found her art to beincredibly fitting through the chapter, but Tana, OMG, this is so different yet so comfortable to read. And so consistent! I’m in love with it.

  • Laur Annie

This page thoooooo! Welcome Back indeed!

  • Chris Dangerfield

Thank you Alex. Love love love the emo on this page. Just do. Who doesn’t need that, even if Kyle’s spaghetti isn’t perf, yahoo. And major welcome Tana, I hope you enjoy this cool graphic novel to be and Vero you are alway the bomb and we’re so luck to have you.

Great page! Thank you all. – Chris

    • Glad you like it, Chris! (And good to see you here again. 🙂 )

  • Justin

Wow. This might be my favourite out-of-uniform interpretation of Kyle. So hot.

  • Several really hot panels on this page.

…But why do I feel like Spooky’s dreaming? 🙂 (He’s VCUTE in that second panel!!!)

    • NoiseShaper

That may actually be what Spooky’s feeling, too!

  • Sapfo

Up and runing for new drama and fun ^^

  • So blue fuzzy slippers? Are they cookie monster slippers? Or maybe blue bunnies?

Yay back!! Yay kisses!! Yay great art!! (Welcome Tana! Awesome colors as usual Vero!)

I think Kyle is happy to see Spooky. I don’t know why, but there is just something that makes me think that. 😛

    • Klaus

It is that glint in his eye.

    • Chris Dangerfield

When you can glomp in big fuzzy slippers you have seriously leveled up! Awesome!

  • Jason Moon

Is that a meal in your pocket(looks like hot dogs or sausages, for extra symbolism), or are you just happy to see me?

  • Sweet page!! 🙂

  • This looks like it’s going to be one fantastic chapter.
    All love for Tana, and the best wishes for Adam. :}

  • Wheee!

(Sorry about the no comments for a long while, guys. I’ve had medical issues that mean staring at a computer screen long enough to read the comments is not a good idea.)

    • Klaus

I hope you have recovered fully.

    • bandanajack

i feel you. different specifics same net result

    • Good to see you here again, Jules. And I’m wishing you good health, my friend.

    • I hope you feel better now, and welcome back.

    • Chris Dangerfield

I third your wheee! And wish you excellent health for many more wheeeeeeees, to come!

  • OnyxLight

Love the look and feel of the art in this chapter!

  • Nate

    “Houston, we have glompage!”

    Kyle, sweetie… you’re a hero. Tidy up a bit. 😀

    • Chris Dangerfield

Sure, but d’awwwww heck the little firestorm has other obviously important things on his…. “mind.” 🙂

  • Remawolf

Long time lurker, first time poster. Just wanted to say that I absolutely love the art on this page! My boys look more like my boys! Especially Spooky. Can’t wait for more of this chapter!!!

    • Klaus

      Welcome to the comments section!

    • Welcome!

    • Welcome, Remawolf! Very glad you like Tana’s work! 🙂

    • Welcome 🙂

      • Remawolf

        Thank you!

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Loving the artwork……appetizer before dinner? Let’s see what’s for dessert ;)……Seriously though ……where I am…..I could use Kyle for a bed warmer…..winter has come back with a hard kick again…..looking at maybe 2 inches of snow with a cold north wind……more shoveling tomorrow …….if it stops by mid day.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Second thoughts on this page (nothing connected to the awesome art work)….just wondering…considering where it left off if this is real or a dream sequence?

    • Brad Majors

If it is a dream, don’t pinch me. I don’t wanna wake up just yet.

    • This is about a week later in timeline, and forst time they meet again. From what Kyle knows, since he slept on last page, everyting is going just fine with what happened last.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Well he does sleep with Spooky to keep him warm… Hmmmm…

        • A kiss clearly worked as fast heating. Should keep this a regular thing.

  • Hans Niemand

Watch it fellas! Time passes, food burns.

  • Shiny Gwilly

welcome back everyone, and welcome Tana!!
this art looks awesome and i can’t wait for more, chapter 2 is kicking off well lol
Kyle we’re all excited, but take it easy a little there

  • Geekinator27

Am I the only one getting flashbacks to when the Annihilator bodily picked up Kyle and slammed him into a wall during their first kiss?

    • Klaus

      No longer.

    • Chris Dangerfield

I respectfully have to say that I reacted to this page as differently as possible.

For me, emotionally, every panel portrays the opposite in character motivation and emotional response. First these are very close friends without the extreme power imbalance that was apparent in that first kiss. Spooky looks obviously a little shy for some reason in panel #2, but not at all vulnerable or threatened.

We’re not frightened and skulking about in an alley outside a (in context) threatening gay bar, but rather in the happy apartment of an 18 year-old young pup.

Kyle shows not one sign of relished dominance or manipulation as Duncan very much did when he, as you say, “slammed him (Kyle) into a wall.” Kyle shows only joy at the sight of Spooky’s arrival, so the ensuing hug/kiss looks completely unpremeditated and spontaneously prompted by joy and genuine attraction.

Spooky (post glomp) looks adorably pleased (and Spooky’s blush Vero is awesome), but in no way does he look threatened, displeased or unsure.

Finally, and again this is just my read of visual composition, I did not read the gold star effect behind Spooky in panel 4 as “slammed him into a wall”, but rather an visual comic effect emphasizing the fact that Kyle gave Spooky’s butt a really happy squeeze and so, this is a hug-plus-plus/u.

Even though my reaction is so different, I like your note because it make me consider the “full-circle” idea of Kyle past and present and how this journey allowed him to grow all in the contrast of these to kisses, It’s so interesting as the first led to pain and suffering and this one shows Kyle exactly where he so wished to be back then.

And that sends my mind spinning off into those thoughts about the events in life that challenge us the most are often the ones that can leave us with the most positive growth.

Full circle, but totally 100% different. Cool. Thanks for the thought.

      • Geekinator27

I was thinking something similar, @Chris Dangerfield @Stephen Hutchison. I got the sense of rapid motion towards the right side of the panel from the fact that Spooky’s hands are kind of in free fall, the white lines on the left side of the panel kind of suggest Kyle rushing forward, and the angle of Spooky’s thigh suggests he’s been taken off his own base of support in a backward direction (I am such a physics nerd).

But yeah, it definitely felt full circle, that comparatively this scene is super enthusiastic and happy on both sides, rather than secretive and manipulating.

    • Stephen Hutchison

Only as a contrast. I think Kyle is much MUCH more confident here than he’s been in previous encounters.

      • Klaus

Kyle is playing the part Duncan played back then. And Duncan was very confident.

        • Stephen Hutchison

I completely disagree. Duncan was playing the older man swaying a younger man into bed for “nefarious” purposes — just not the ones he suggested it was for. Kyle is exuberantly assertively picking up his older man and doing a “toppish” sort of thing. The similarity is superficial.

          • Klaus

Yes of course. It is just the picture that is similar. The motivations are completly different.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. I’ve got to admit that wasn’t anywhere near my first reaction. Now that you point it out, there is a similarity in physical action – but as others have said, there’s essentially no similarity in the broader context of emotions, relationships and manipulation people in an attempt to take over the world with demons.

But let’s be darkly paranoid for a moment. We’ve already seen in chapter one of Legendary that Kyle has almost completely misinterpreted Spooky’s wants and needs. Is there some way that Kyle – the well-meaning but clueless newbie to relationships – might somehow screw up and inadvertently hurt Spooky in a vaguely comparable way to Duncan hurt Kyle? That’s all I’ve got for compare-and-contrast purposes.

[Looks at previous two paragraphs]. I’m overthinking things again, aren’t I?

      • Chris Dangerfield

Not a bit of overthinking, but I have to remember how I functioned as a highly inexperienced gay boy of 18. Of course, I got many emo-moments wrong, but sometimes a more experienced “Spooky” or whomever helped me not completely screw up. Relationships don’t form effortlessly, but usually with one of the partners having some experience and understanding regarding what’s happening and thus having the patience and being willing to take the emotional risks to see what’s possible.

I’m not saying this moment is clear sailing, but it’s clear that neither guy is clueless.

  • Karol Chmielewski

I really like Spooky in this new art style

    • Madock345

Yeah, he looks so good in panels 2 and 6

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I know, right?

  • D. G.

Lovely passionate kiss. Welcome Tana. Alex and Vero, nice work as always.

    • Good to be back, DG! And thank you! 🙂

      • D. G.

        Ur welcome.

  • bandanajack

i can tell right now. i am going to like tana’s work on this strip… i like he bold lines, it is muscular and has some heft. it reminds me of veronica’s work but moreso

    • Glad to hear you’re liking Tana’s work, Jack! (And Vero is still doing the colors, just like with Chapter 1 of “Legendary.”)

  • T Dibbler

Yay new chapter! For some reason I had thought ‘Legendary’ was going to be just that one chapter, I’m pleased to see I was wrong. Looking forward to what happens next. 🙂

    • Glad to hear you’re looking forward to what comes next. (And there will actually be three chapters in the Legendary arc!)

      • T Dibbler

  • Heaven forbid. This is not a complicated meal, but by gosh, he is making it from scratch. 🙂

  • Jason Moon

With whipped cream?(there’s that symbolism again)

  • Hello? Anyone around for camping? I made it today. No falling asleep minutes after turning off the alarm clock. It’s back to getting used to camping schedule 🙂

    • davefragments

      Hi Danish,
I’m hiding from the cold that’s coming back tonight.

      • Hi 🙂
I’m about to burry myself in my covers again while I camp here in the dark. Only light is from tablet and tv. I’m having the re-run of the Vienna New Year Eve concert going on tv. Today is last chance to watch that on my tv-box. I don’t watch a lot of classical music concerts on tv, but I watch that one. Usually in the first week after New Year. It’s kind of a tradition.

        • davefragments

I settled for repeats of the Deathly Hallows because nothing else interested me.

Did you know there will be a new comedy series based on the premise that a Father left his entire fortune to an aerobics studio (think spandex) and his two sons are competing in a contest to get it (you won’t think spandex ever again) … It’s the death of literature

          • Well…uuh, I’m sure it has some wievers ^_^

    • Saxon_Brenton

Just got up from an afternoon nap. Had a very Friday night gaming last night.

      • Brad Majors

I’m in the midst of very late Friday night gaming, but I took a break to read the new page 😛

  • davefragments

    Hello Campers,
All this talk of pasta makes me hungry.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. That makes me wonder if I should defrost one of the helpings of spag.bol. I have in the freezer. I’ve been having salad sandwiches for lunch and dinner the last few days, and something cooked might make a nice change.

      • davefragments

My Father once said that as a kid, he was served a leftover spaghetti sandwich (cold and red spaghetti, the stringy kind – between two pieces of bread) …

  • stickfigurefairytales

    I approve of this page.

    • davefragments

Hi Stick, It is a fun page.
I hope you are saying warm.

      • stickfigurefairytales

You too, Dave! It’s going to be a crazy weekend for sure, weather-wise.

        • davefragments

I did a big food shopping yesterday and I am stocked for 2 weeks if need be.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I had the furnace repair guy come today and adjust my radiators.

          • davefragments

I had my boiler adjusted too. Raise the water temperature. Put out more heat.
Plus, I have a water tank (no pipes) and had the company fill it yesterday because laying a 4inch diameter hose at 10°F is impossible.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That is true.

        • Me today walking home from shopping: Omg, it’s so cold. The wind bites.. *thinks of northern US weather*.. on the other side, never mind xD

It may not have been really warm here at any point in 2017, like at ALL. Other way around it has not been really cold either (I’m talking Danish standards), so days where temps -or just wind chill- feels degrees below freezing this winter, it feels like a bit of a shock on the body. Nothing even remotely like US , though it snowed for maybe 10mins shorthly after I got home.
2017 has been a weird year weather-wise, also here. Where US has had a lot of extremes in hot, or now cold, the Danish weather has kinda stalled on ‘mild’. Not to mention the whole year seems to have consisted of a short winter, a long spring and a long fall. No summer. We didn’t have a single all-country official summer day in temps in 2017 – meaning temps above 25C/77F. Even locally, somewhere in Denmark, it only happened about a dozen times. None of them where I live.

          • davefragments

I am seriously considering finding a hot summer-like place for next winter.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Would you want a place that is hot and dry, or are you okay with humidity?

          • davefragments

Either. I can live with humid.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That expands your options significantly, then!

          • stickfigurefairytales

That’s crazy! It’s like you were trapped in stasis, weather-wise. I’m sorry that our country’s government has been dead set on ignoring climate change until such time as it kills us all. 🙁

We’ve been having some severe cold in much of the U.S. the last couple of weeks. At the moment it’s about 17F/-8C outside (though it’s also night), but tomorrow is supposed to have a *high* of 15F/-9C.

    • Hi Stick! And I agree.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hi DanishWolf! Happy New Year!

        • To you too. I’ve had a very calm approach to the new year, doing as little as only necessary (and fun), after one of the most busy ends of a year I’ve had in many years.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Glad you’re taking care of yourself! That’s so important.

  • Btw, if you haven’t been around Patreon (being a patron), Alex (re-) posted some really nice Kyle/Spooky art for Flashback Friday. This is based on an old fan-poll request, way before Legendary, but it fits so well with where this is going now 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yay!! I’ve got to check that out.

  • Since I have spotted him being around just now.. CHRIS! It’s so nice to see you back in the comments. It’s been a while 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Yay Chris! Welcome back!

  • Chris Dangerfield

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’d love to stay and camp longer, but I’m starting to nod off. Goodnight, everyone!

  • Sapfo

    Sneaking in for a moment….

  • Page will be up shortly. 🙂

    • Wohoo.
Heh. Just as I finished reading that, the big drum was hit hard twice (on concert I’m listening to), like a musical ‘yeah!’ to this comment 🙂

  • davefragments
  • William Clapie

    Uh, should hello include ouch?
Great expression for spooky. Probably hasn’t been that surprise since his first demon!

  • Reyos Blackwood

Why does Kyle need a stove? Why does Red Hot not just cook on his palm?

  • Snorlaxation

    I can’t believe I didn’t check this out sooner!
I love this new art style!
