The Young Protectors: Legendary Chapter One—Page 5

326 Comments on The Young Protectors: Legendary Chapter One—Page 5

Well, I did kiss you, you big, carrot-topped galoot!

So! Big news! Kyle has apparently, finally been able to find a little satisfaction on his own! And it looks like he’s now ready to bring ordinary mortals into the danger zone! Is Spooky just doing Kyle a solid here? If not, what’s really going on? And, most importantly, who else on the team did Spooky kiss at the end of the Battle of Worst Dad Ever?!

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • YA!

  • DonnaC

okay so he was just putting his shoes away neatly

    • Madock345

      Such a dork XD

      • Mary Klemzak

Or is he respecting his best friend/boyfriends Asian culture? I love this little detail!

        • NoiseShaper

How much of that does Spooky really identify with, though? He can’t even remember his original name or his parents.

  • Not ‘seen’… but Amanda 😉

  • Wait… I think that deserves a head slap and a duh. Kyle. Seriously. He kissed you. Whether he healed you at the same time or not. He didn’t kiss anyone else.

  • Bei Dawei

Panel 2: Whoa there! Loosen that belt! And unbutton your shirt while you’re at it.

I see the shoes are already off, but why is he putting them in the corner? I keep expecting to see a tie draped over the lampshade.

    • Mary Klemzak

I think its because Spooky is Asian, and if you didn’t already know, Asians like people to put their shoes near the entrance. So as to keep their home, and in this case, Spookys’ room, clean.

  • DonnaC

See he does like you Kyle.

  • That’s a nice refrasing of ‘I masturbate a lot.. for practice, now that I can’ XD

    • Curt Clark

Pics or it didn’t happen. Of Kyle. Practicing. For…research. Yes.

  • Bei Dawei

And here I was, just now wondering about fire blasting out.

  • Spooky and Kyle sittin in a tree
    K I S S I N G
    First comes love
    Then comes marriage

    • Cydney Sabin

Then comes a demon in the baby carriage?

      • Madock345

        Butt carriage

        Demonic butt babies

      • I can so see Spooky with a baby demon cooing at it…

        • Amanda rolling her eyes
          Gordon pretending it doesn’t exist
          Mitch full of curiosity…

          • Curt Clark

And then there’s Fluke, alternating between being Best Babysitter and having Buttons & Mindy-esque escapades with the hellspawn tyke.

FLUKE: “Sorry I’m late guys, crashed my car getting here.”

KYLE & SPOOKY share a look.

            K&S: “OH THANK GOD.”

      • Jeff Baker

        Oh, LOL!!!!!

  • Is it wrong to say I’m happy that he talk with someone about this? Masturbation and sex. It’s good that he doesn’t shut it in. He clearly has talked with Spooky (and perhaps others) about this previous issue in the last weeks. Just see how easily he mentions it to Spooky.

This whole topic of sex has clearly been talked about before. Also like how Spooky ‘confeses’ that it’s been on his mind before they agreed to do this ‘as good friends’.

  • davefragments

I think Kyle is acting a bit too dense. Rule #5 – don’t waste good

    • Naah, it’s just old issues mixed with new opportunities of sex, and with a long time crush that suddently show interest that is. Kyle may be an adult now, but he’s still a learning teenager and this is new territory where things can go wrong in many ways.

      • davefragments

To quote Starship Troopers: Never pass up a good thing

  • You were the one who wouldn’t give up on Spooky, Mister Red Hot. That has to give a body pause and a good think. That would go a long way I think .

  • unknownlight927

Kyle putting his shoes in the corner. Cringy yet Adorable at the same time!! 🙂

    • Bei Dawei

Is this specified in the script? I wonder if this was supposed to happen near the door, where East Asians normally leave their shoes (all lined up).

  • TwilightDreamer

    AAAAWWWW!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Shiny Gwilly

Kyle’s REALLY unsure and hesitating up a storm, it’s good to see (if even it is frustrating from our view lol)
he’s done a lot of progress, good progress, over some time now and it’s a big deal! he’s just scared at this point. he probably knows in the back of his head what the truth is, but he’s still scared of it being untrue. he doesn’t want to hope for things like this anymore (in terms of romance), he wants to try to be more careful and he’s been doing his absolute best on that front; he WANTS this…he just needs further proof and reassurance from Spooky that it’s something that HE wants too (i’m really tired did any of that make sense)
keep going Spooky, keep proving it to him!

  • Adam Black

    Dammit Kyle,
Stop fishing for compliments and let the man you love suck your cock.

    • Nirgal

Anyone in favor of Spooky sucking Kyle’s cock, say “Aye!”

      • Adam Black

Sword swollowing and flame swallowing is in spookys bag O tricks, right?

  • Klaus

    One will do.

  • Klaus

It is very understandable that Kyle is nervous. If he had not hit it off with a stranger like Sameer, small loss. This is his best friend. Making love is going to change their relationship forever. Unless it is just a practical thing, with no feelings involved. If they can pretend that, maybe they can go back to being best friends, if being lovers does not work out.

  • Sapfo

Spooky is a really smart guy, hear him out Kyle. Kissing only heals fire people like you ^^

  • bronakopdin

omg Kyle you’re adorable xD so cute ^^
So tell us, Spooky, why you only kissed Kyle :^)

    • Klaus

Flyboy has this really scratchy stubble, Tsunami runs away when you try to kiss him, and so on.

      • bronakopdin

        ah right… of cooourse xD

  • Kate G

Sometimes, a person can be so dense. Dense as a forest. Sometimes you have to chop a patch of trees down so the crickets can be heard.

TL;DR, Kyle, you need to take a toilet brush and scrub your brain because Spooky like likes you. *hand hits forehead*

And I’ve possibly made the worst use of metaphors ever. It’s 3 am and I’m packing boxes. Forgive me.

  • Minyassa

    Oh Kyle. Doofus.

  • fujoshifanatic

Hey Spooks, way to get an edge on the competition! “Yeah, those other guys are cute and sweet and like puppies, Kyle, but can they handle ALL of your hotness?” And I have a feeling that once you are Spooked, you’re forever haunted my the magic in them pants. I think Amanda can vouch for that. ;-P This is gonna be so sweet, in more ways than one!

    • Geneva150

      “Once you are Spooked” YAAASSSSS!

      • Pietro7

        LOL Great term.

      • Curt Clark

I am now forever going to use the term “Spook Me” in my head. >.> I don’t know who to blame/thank for this.

  • Saxon_Brenton

I am grateful to everybody here who has pointed out that in many east asian cultures people take their shoes off when indoors, because when I first read this page I was really starting to worry about about Kyle. I mean, a (late) teenaged boy neatly stacking his shoes rather than just kicking them off and letting them land wherever? That sent alarm bells off over serious displacement activity.

    • NoiseShaper

I’m pretty sure it’s got a lot more to do with Kyle playing for time than with Spooky’s unknown parents having been asian (or at least their ancestors again).

      • Saxon_Brenton

I guess we’ll just have to see if Kyle does anything else to keep his hands busy and/or prevent himself from having to fully engage with his feelings.

    • Jeff Baker

Very clever touch! I didn’t catch that! Spooky supposedly doesn’t remember specific things like where he was raised and who his family was but little things like this would be serious clues to his past life!

  • Mary Klemzak

They totally should, for no reason!

    • NoiseShaper

In some cultures it’s more common, though.

  • Galopa WXY

Aww come on, Kyle’s not stupid, he knows, he’s just unsure and wants confirmation before doing anything

    • NoiseShaper

The “why” is kind of important, after all…!

  • Thesseli

    Aw, Spooky is so cute!

  • Nate

    I’m a bit confused, now.

On this page, Kyle seems to think that there’s nothing going on between him & Spooky… that the kiss was a heat-of-the-moment one time thing.

But back in the coda of ETE, it seemed clear that they were in a sort of long-distance relationship, although he’s not sure what kind:

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-coda-page-2/
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-coda-page-3/

Given Kyle’s confidence with Sameer, his reactions to Spooky don’t line up. Or is it just me?

(I am assuming this takes place AFTER the coda. Because, you know, new story. 😀 )

    • Pietro7

Yeah, I’m having the same problem. Maybe this scene is supposed to be before Kyle’s meet-up with Sameer. That would make the attitudes much more consistent.

    • I didn’t read that Coda scene like that at all. I read that as them not having had much time to sort out what that kiss was or talk about what happened between them. All of them questioning what that kiss meant. For me that was a ‘don’t expect too much of Spooky for a relationship’ kind of moment/talk which Kyle also knew himself, and why he’s started dating now -but with that open question of what would happen once they had time to sort things out.

That was why I was unsure back then how long time had gone by between the battle and that talk with Fluke and Mitch, and if they had had time to sort some things out. Something they’re in the process of now, and clearly Kyle is still insecure of himself despite progress. Not a wonder though considering his (and Spooky’s) past history.

    • Klaus

In the Coda Kyle says that he and spooky has not had any time alone. So this is their first chance to be together. From what Kylw is saying here, he has done dating, but no sex.

  • Nate

Oh god, now I’ve got other people doing it…. 😉

(As it happens, I’m taking a bit of vacation time, so I’m free to hug them both. 🙂 )

    • Chris Dangerfield

      My kind of vacation… ENJOY!

  • Klaus

    Spooky does, though.

  • Jake McCoy

I wonder how long Spooky had a thing for Kyle…

  • hapax

Wowzers, Kyle, those trousers are leetle tight in panel two. Methinks you have become a bit too accustomed to running around in spandex.

    • hapax

Also, seriously, unbutton that collar button. “Buttoned up” is only a metaphor for repressed, you needn’t take it quite so literally. I’m getting anxious just looking at you.

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

In this cartoon style….I’m thinking there will be less to see than his hard -body in spandex……anything else wouldn’t fit in with the current artistic style.

  • I sort of feel like Spooky is leading Kyle on a lil’ bit. He’s a natural flirt, hopefully he doesn’t break Kyle’s heart 🙁

    • NoiseShaper

I don’t think so. Looks like Spooky is not in love with Kyle, but he clearly loves him as a very close friend and even finds him rather hot (ahem).

    • Sal Wolffs

That’s why the kiss might’ve been ambiguous, but “well, I did kiss you” removes that ambiguity. Spooks wants some of that hot, hot ass.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

This is more like an experiment ……they both seem to know what’s going on……speaking of which ……they better get it on before the mood passes!

  • Might have to hit Kyle on the head with a brick fo him to get a clue

    • Sal Wolffs

My favourite term here is “clue-by-four”.

  • Sal Wolffs

I like “Battle of Worst Dad Ever”. Sums it up nicely.

    • Jonni

      Laampros: Dad From Hell

  • I suspect Kyle wants to draw it out and make Spooky say it. Speculating about Spook’s feelings is dangerous. Wondering how he really feels is aggravating! Yet, like most teenagers Kyle can’t take Spooky’s hands and say, “I need to know how you feel about–us.” Lovely dance we’re watching, eh wot?

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

After the “Healing Kiss” I should think there would be no question about Spooky’s feelings for Kyle.

      • Biippa

But Kyle may view it as a “you heard my dad say I’m attracted to you and since I just technically saved you, you’re prolly just trying to be nice” kinda kiss.

      • timemonkey

There’s a lot of possibilities for what a kiss can mean.

  • Jason Moon

“What is this ‘friends with benefits’ that you speak of, Kyle?”

  • Justin

Awww. I do like how Kyle is still dating. From what we know of the personas, I feel like Spooky will come out of this with no big deal, but I’m afraid that Kyle’s heart might place more importance into whatever’s upcoming than it will be.

  • davefragments

I don’t think Kyle knows much of anything about “romance” before getting naked in bed. By his own admission he’s a virgin fire hazard and never even had a mutual masturbatory episode with another person’s friendly hand.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

But then there was the “episode” with Duncan……..that was more than “Jack Handy”!

      • davefragments

I remember my first time. I faked my way through it all.

        • Wayne Lunkwitz

Mine was strange……the guy wanted to do it in the dark……his reasoning I found out later was so he didn’t feel guilty……later on I met his S/O and we ended up doing mutual masturbation……STRANGE couple

          • Bei Dawei

            Father Murphy?!

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

Not sure where that came from……but back then(I was 29) I worked for a grocery store…..I had no beard (Not allowed) and a whole lot less gray hair!

    • Curt Clark

I cannot believe I missed the term “virgin fire hazard” in the comments section. REGRETS FOREVER.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Sorry guys……looks like camping escaped me last night……..had a free game waiting for me at the bowling alley……so I went ….had fun……in spite of the fact that things are still being remodeled over there (new owners) …….then today I finished up my personal birthday celebration by going over to DQ and having a small Blizzard after I got done with shopping at the hardware store across the way……on the walk back a car pulled over and offered me a ride back home…..it was my oldest sister who had just finished a shift at Walmart.

    • davefragments

It seems that Happy Birthday greetings are in order.
      And many more

      • Pietro7

        What Dave said. 🙂

    • KatKaleen

      Lovely! Happy belated birthday!

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

        Thanks ,Kat

    • Happy belated Birthday! Sorry I missed it!

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

At least now we know that Kyle didn’t “walk away”.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Ummmm……that last frame……Spooky talking about kissing……..didn’t Tsunami suggest at that point “less tongue” ??

    • KatKaleen

      That was a joke.

    • That was for Spooky when he was to heal Tsu. Tsu wanted less tongue used 😉

  • Evan

Will Kyle keep his socks on again when they…? xD I would love it.

  • Foye

Silly me, I was intimidated by the long wall of text at the end of engaging the enemy and couldn’t figure out where the updates went.

  • Earl Patterson

Yes Kyle you did kiss me too

  • Jac

Aw Kyle. After everything, this boy couldn’t possibly just.. like you?

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I was very surprised that they managed to disconnect from the first kiss!

  • Toli Bera

“Well there was that time with gordon with the chessboard, but that’s neither here nor there.”

  • Zephyr10101

    I love these boys

  • Okin

Oh man, so funny that Kyle’s not getting it, I can relate XD
Once a friend told me he wanted to be my boyfriend and I was like “Whaaat?! . . . well, that explains the flowers and the back rubs.” I think I kinda broke his heart though, and we never really talked again, so here’s hoping Kyle doesn’t break Spooky’s heart :O

  • Nix Nancy

This level of density should NOT be reachable ugh

    • Dartania

Wanna talk about dense? My girlfriend and I were in love for 4 months before we figured out that it was reciprocated, and that was only through me playing 20 questions. “Do you like me?” And god, she was so scared to answer that question. Previous to this, I invited her to family holiday gatherings. She said I should dress as Spiderman and she as Deadpool for comicon. Then she introduced me to Spideypool on AO3. I took her to see Deadpool on valentine’s day (happened to come out that day), and made her a card and took her to dinner. And we still didn’t realize that it was mutual. (Though anyone who saw us together knew)

    • Snorlaxation

Not density so much as fear or self deprecation. Kyle’s aware that Spooky is a great guy and a great friend, but he does have a crush on him, and being intimate to this degree is fun and everything, but Kyle is a romantic, and a little naive.

He feels like this might be at best, a friend helping a friend, and at worst, only for the sake of kyle not exploding the next time he has sex.

      • Bei Dawei

He seemed very self-aware and in charge at the end of the last arc, but how he’s regressed into this “Aw shucks” persona.

        • Snorlaxation

His self aware person really only extended as far as himself and his own worth/capabilities. He no longer fears being gay, or is as terrified of losing control in the ‘heat’ of the moment, and he knows he doesn’t have to ‘settle’ for bad guys who understand him when he trusts that he can be himself with almost anyone.

  • T Dibbler

    More kissing please! <3

I guess Kyle hasn't wanted to let himself think there was more to it than just the face-value, in case he turned out to be wrong. Much less painful to tell yourself it's 'just a favour from a friend' and find out it isn't than to hope it's sign of something more and then find out you're wrong.

Are they in a motel or has one of the lads got a studio apartment?

    • Madock345

The comments have been talking about it like it’s spooky’s place, but I’m not sure how they know that. Maybe I missed something or it’s just the most common assumption.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Alex makes the scripts available for patreon supporters. The description of the first page made it clear that this is taking place in private quarters that Spooky has adjacent to his private detective office, on the 3rd floor of a building in a run-down office district.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Readers have submitted lots of guesses as to whether Kyle is being dense, or being fearful. In my usual wishywashy way, I haven’t fully decided yet.

However I am reasonably sure that it is NOT a case of Kyle fearing that ALL of his attempts at romance will inevitably end badly. If that were the case, then he wouldn’t have even tried to go on a date with Samir in the coda to YP: Engaging The Enemy. So I think we can put aside the idea that Kyle thinks that he’s somehow cursed. Whatever else we can say, somehow Spooky’s speech back at the warehouse penetrated Kyle’s skull that he will eventually find someone.

That still leaves a lot of room for his fear to manouevre, of course. I’m favouring the idea that Kyle still isn’t sure whether or not (and by how much) Spooky like-likes him, and so is talking things down, not making a big deal of the issue, in order for inevitable dissapointment to not hurt so much. We’ll see in a few hourse, of course.

    • That’s how I’m reading it. He’s in a way giving Spooky an out. Giving himself an out. It was just a thing that happened and all. Heat of the moment. etc

      • davefragments

It slipped my mind earlier. Are you near any of the big brush fires?

        • They’re near by the crow flys but we’re not in danger of them. We had one or two days of smokey air.

          • davefragments

I have another friend out there and him and his wife are in the same situation.

          • Fire season sucks. The problem of a lot of rain we get a lot of growth which then dries in the summer and poof fires. And worse when the fire gets into the mountains and hills

          • davefragments

I joke that every time I call the landscaper to mow the lawn, it rains for another few days like I’m cursed to live with a shaggy lawn.
            {Cursed, I say. Cursed by the rain gods!}

          • Pietro7

They’re just hard of hearing; they thought you meant ‘wet’ when you said ‘cut’. 🙂

          • davefragments

I told my Sister-in-Law that it was Jove raping Venus and she was crying. That made her day.

            {hint: sarcasm there, just a teeny-tiny bit of sarcasm to the in-law}

          • Curt Clark

I’d grump about that, but it’s mythologically accurate. >.> Zeus by any name is both a hornball and a SUPREME bag of dicks.

          • davefragments

I just wanted to piss off my sister-in-law.
I was being a bad widdle boy
            😉

    • Sameer was a good date, maybe still someone he date, but Spooky has been that ‘crush that wouldn’t happen’ for so long that it probably feels a bit unreal that Spooky suddently shows a clear interest. An interest that still has lines of ‘this far and not further’ in relationship options.

    • Bei Dawei

Maybe the date with Sameer went really well, and now Kyle feels funny about playing around with Spooky, but doesn’t want to say so directly.

      • davefragments

He might just be nervous that he could suddenly sprout horns or burst into flames

        • Bei Dawei

Or nervous that he WON’T sprout a horn! Nyuk nyuk nyuk

          • davefragments

            Naughty, naughty,
Oooh_la_la…. performance anxiety — I never had it

  • davefragments

    Hello Campers,
It’s Page #6 tonight. I need a new page. I got a haircut. Watched Wonder Woman again and saw “A Monster Calls,” and caught a repeat of “Hidden Figures” in the past few days. But, but, but-ski, I woke up grumpy this morning and stayed grumpy. Blame it on the rain and another hurricane headed toward the USA.

    • Madock345

And said Hurricane is now the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic.

And FEMA is already running out of funding from Harvey.

Man, I wonder what group thought reducing funding to FEMA would be a good plan?

anyway… How’d you like Hidden Figures?

      • FrankTargon

Irma is almost the strongest. It’s in the top two or three.
However, I gave talks to HS kids about becoming a chemical engineer and I always challenged the girls to become engineers. So Hidden Figures pleased me both as a well told story and a true story.

        • FrankTargon

added: Hidden Figures glorifies the science of the space program and I am (above all) a scientist.

          • Pietro7

I loved it. My 23-year old son was amazed by how primitive everything was, technically as well as culturally. I think it opened his eyes in multiple (good) ways.

          • davefragments

I’m late to this discussion but I started college in 1968 and cards were all that we used to program a huge box called the IBM 360/67 and it had an amazing 32KB memory. I hated cards and punch machines.

        • Madock345

It’s actually just crossed those, at least in terms of pure wind speed.

          http://grist.org/article/irma-the-strongest-atlantic-hurricane-in-history-keeps-getting-stronger/

Now I’m interested: What kind of science do you do?

          • FrankTargon

I missed that hurricane update. The Caribbean waters are hot and that feeds a hurricane.

I am a chemical engineer and I spent 30 years turning dirty black coal into dirty black oil and then to clean white gasoline. If I could still be conducting experimental plant work, I wouldn’t have retired. But I had to move into engineering management, and lots of safety and health.

          • Madock345

That’s a really cool field! Must have been interesting being a scientist in the oil industry when green energy was starting to get big.

I’ve always been fascinated by things like that, how things are made. Pretty much all I watch on youtube are cooking shows, traditional crafts, and stuff about factories and production processes. Probably my dad’s fault, we used to watch How It’s Made and Unwrapped every day when I was little.

          • FrankTargon

It is still a fascinating field of research.
I was one of those kids that at around the age of 12 said “I want to be a chemical engineer” and that was always my ambition in life.

      • davefragments

I liked Hidden Figures. It’s a good movie about some significant times.

      • davefragments

Hurricane Irma is going to do bad things to Florida. It will be a second record storm.

        • Bei Dawei

Remember when John Titor, a purported time traveler from the year 2036, told people online not to worry about major American cities being underwater?

          • davefragments

Please don’t. I know too much science and I had one of those lousy arguments about Climate Change from a person who can barely ad and subtract. It’s very frustrating.

          • Bei Dawei

Oh, I’m not a Titor believer. I don’t know if anyone is, anymore (although some Japanese anime has taken the story and ran with it). The guy, whoever he was, was actually pretty good at keeping people guessing (this was around the year 2000), and none of his predictions were really wrong until 2004 (the Olympics weren’t supposed to happen). As for climate change, it doesn’t need us to believe in it. Miami has maybe a half-century of a future left, Irma or no Irma.

          • davefragments

            “Fart LouderDear” will also suffer.
            😉

          • Bei Dawei

            ??

EDIT: Oh wait, I get it now.

            Fort Lauderdale

          • LOL.. I got that reference 😉

    • Doki recently turned her computer back on after some hit and miss storms earlier. She is also currently watching Horns, and his family is horrible.

      • FrankTargon

I’ve seen HORNS. It is a spooky story. Very different story, too.

      • Horns is the most weird, yet very ‘deep’ and symbolic movie I have seen in a while. Saw it last week. I liked it, but not sure I liked it which makes sense the same way the movie did xD

        • FrankTargon

I tried reading the book and didn’t make it 1/3 through. The movie is much more approachable.

        • davefragments

Horns is a surreal trip. I’m not sure I like how it ends. I’m still trying to figure that out.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Is your computer working okay again?

        • Yeah, computer is fine, we are just in the habit of turning certain things off during storms if the are bad enough. I wouldn’t say they were really all that bad, but the thunder was really loud.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That’s sensible. When I was in college my laptop’s sound card got fried by a lightning strike nearby one time.

Really loud thunder is scary. *finds blanket to hide under*

          • I have had a couple of fried modems. One storm took out our AC. …Doki was not a pleasant person to be around until it was fixed. Doki does NOT do well in hot.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Ughhhhh, that sounds like the WORST.

          • What few people skills I have run for the hills until properly cool again.

          • stickfigurefairytales

We should make you a warning label: “Do not store Dokidokibaka at temperatures higher than [X] degrees.”

          • Yep. ^_^

          • stickfigurefairytales

            “Contents may become volatile.”

          • extremely*

    • Hiya.
I did three loads of laundry despite having a completely non-energy day. I plan on getting a haircut in a week or two. After that I will be 7-8 inches shorter.
Have seen loads of movies in the last days and will see a few more in the next 3 days. Then my parents get home and my house-sitting and access to their tv-box is over.

      • Madock345

Your hair is 8 inches of your height? Are you Marge Simpson?

        jk XD

      • FrankTargon

MY cable is obnoxiously expensive but it’s on 24/7.
Enjoy the box and the movies.

      • davefragments

        Hi Danish

      • mornin Danish

      • davefragments

I’ve discovered a few shows on some lesser cable channels that require eyeball bleach to remove their terrible stupidity.

  • Pietro7

Trying to stay awake for the new page, but very sleepy. May have to say goodnight and read it tomorrow. 🙁

    • If so, sleep well.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I feel your pain. Rest well if you do head off to bed!

  • Kate G

    Have I missed the camp?

    • davefragments

      nope

      • Kate G

I made it for once. How’ve you been Dave?

        • davefragments

ok. I need tonight to cheer up. Rain, too much rain

          • Morgan

*hug* is Irma a risk for you?

          • davefragments

Sorry, It seems that I missed this comment.
            No, I’m in Western Pennsylvania.
I hope you are not at risk. That storm will be bad for Florida and the Caribbean.

          • Morgan

Yeah, we’re in FL. On the East coast, fortunately, so right now it’s starting to look like we won’t get the worst of it. Glad you’re safe, Dave.

          • Kate G

Ah, rain is never fun. It’s been pretty overcast here. It luckily didn’t rain while I was out with my horse today.

          • davefragments

Horses don’t care but the riders end up stinky and cold.

          • davefragments

            wet dogs smell bad too

          • Kate G

            Oh wet dog is terrible.

          • Kate G

I ride inside but Vince is a little wuss. He will spook at the tiniest little offense known to mankind. We had two other horses aside from me (one kicks at other horses and the other is a pony) and the last thing I needed was rain making my horse say, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! RAIN! RAIN! SPOOK SPOOK SPOOK!” and rear everywhere.

He’s a Grade A wimp. We work on it constantly.

          • davefragments

Spooks at rain? OK. I guess that’s possible.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I haven’t had that much direct dealings with horses, but it seems to me that the default reaction for the higher-strung ones is basically: ANYTHING AT ALL! PANIC!!

          • Kate G

All horses are a bit different. I’ve been horses that are very very chill but hate other horses in their personal space so they lash out (that was my Scoobs who I miss dearly) to just too chill to those that are very reactive to the tiniest leg (Captain.)

Vince – the horse I ride now – is a retired hunter-jumper (this means he was graded at how well he jumped over a jump over how many jumps he jumped) and he is very sensitive, hearing and skin wise. I’m always working on him desensitizing him to sounds and the fly spray (he really does hate it, but he hates flies more.) I use soft hair brushes on him. When he’s competing, I put in ear plugs. It’s the only way. He will utterly spook if we don’t. Even his old owner said, “Ear plugs.” I’m very vigilant on him, keeping track of him and the sounds around me; I’m as sensitive as he is, so if I hear it, I’m moving him forward.

          • davefragments

Sounds like a jumper. They are beautiful in a jump but temperamental because of that ability .

          • Kate G

            Yep.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Do race horses tend to be especially high strung? I remember how the horses in the Kentucky Derby (and Preakness and Belmont) all have companion horses to help keep them calm – sometimes other animals, too. Or is that more because the crowds there are so big?

          • Well they are only 3 years old. But I think they mostly okay so long as nobody gets killed/hurt and the horse runs.

But athletes of any sort are usually a little temperamental

          • stickfigurefairytales

People regularly have to prevent Michael Phelps from trampling members of the crowd, for instance. ;D

          • I’m sure he has/had his quirks. That other swimmer, he decided it was okay to be a thug and break into a bathroom and then pretend he was mugged. Fun stuff.

Granted I don’t think it’s an excuse for the horses to act that way. Of course they are being brought out in front of huge crowds with lots of noise and cameras and people all over the place. And some that’s the only time they’re out is when they get to run.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That guy was a jackass, definitely.

I think the horses are probably also inclined towards being naturally jumpy since they have to be good at running as fast as they can on cue. Couple that with noisy crowds and generally being a horse, and I would imagine that you’d easily get very nervous or restless horses.

          • Definitely. And I think why some folks aren’t sure about giving them a second chance once they retire. But a lot of off the track thoroughbreds make excellent sport horses. A bit of tlc and patience is all that’s needed.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Good to know!

          • Kate G

We have two off the track thoroughbreds at the NFP. One is a chestnut named Super Dave whom we call The Flirt because he really likes to give out love. He really loves me and if I’m having a bad day I’ll walk over to his stall, walk in and get some love from Super Dave because he will rub your head and shoulders if given the tiniest amount of attention. He is quite the love bug.Super Dave came to us trashed. He was so underweight and he had a really bum leg. He’s quite a NFP favorite for loves.

The other is a direct descendant of Secretariat named Shooter (Secretariat is his 5x great-grandsire.) and he made his trainer a small sum of money. He came to us a little skinny with an injured leg and someone definitely didn’t care for his mouth and he really didn’t trust people. I’m still working on making friends with Shooter and he came to us, gosh, last year. He really makes friends slowly, but that’s okay and I go at his pace. I’m still working at being able to groom him. I know I’m not there all of the time, so he doesn’t know me, and I respect that. He is quite beautiful though and you can see Secretariat in him.

          • Kate G

Depends on the horse again. You have to understand though all race horses start their careers at their sexual peak. If I were 2-3 years old, at my sexual peak, and there were no mares around, I would be a little cranky too.

Vince is one of the youngest horses used in the NFP. He’s 8 or 9. Most of our horses are at least 12, so they are fairly calm. Vince is, in human years, in his early 30s, so he is still at the peak of physical fitness and maturity and that comes with tons of energy and the “I think I can get away with everything” attitude. He’s a bit of a temperamental butt head, but he’s my butt head even though I don’t even own a share of him. [There is a lady that recently bought a share of him in the NFP and he took her for a wild ride Saturday. I tried very hard not to laugh when I watched part of her lesson. Poor soul didn’t know if Vince knows he can get away with shit with you…he will. Getting control back will take months.]

          • davefragments

My brother has some cantankerous horses but none that spook like that. They nip, try to step on you, or push you over, snuffle at your pockets too hard for treats, but they aren’t shy.

          • Kate G

Oh, he’s not shy. Shy is when they walk away from you into a corner. We do have a few in rehab that are shy. He’s just…easily spooked. He loves to chew on things and yes, he’s known for nipping and biting which is why you must always be aware of where his damned head is, but he ain’t shy. He’s very much a horse that loves making his case known. “WHERE ARE MY PEPPERMINTS?!”

          • davefragments

My brother and I are twins and his horse that pulled the cart for weddings and rides in the local park was blind. I had to watch what I said if he was hooked to the wagon because he couldn’t tell our voices apart.

          • Kate G

How funny. It’s amazing how horses can adapt. I don’t use my voice much for Vince because he can’t hear much when he has the ear plugs in; plus, as talkative as I am online, I’m selectively mute. Most times, the only times you’ll hear me use my voice when controlling Vince is either a cluck for a trot or a kissing sound for a canter. Otherwise, all you see me using to control him is legs, reins and my head placement. I can tell the horses to walk, trot and canter, but I’d rather show because that’s easier for them to understand (and easier for me. Less energy wasted.)

          • davefragments

            🙂
            It’s gaining the horse’s trust.

          • Kate G

Definitely. Lots of brush time. I love brushing them.

    • stickfigurefairytales

It seems like a late one tonight – I thought I was going to miss camping as well, but nope!

  • Morgan

Good evening/morning wherever you are. How is everyone?

    • davefragments

      reasonable neato

    • Pietro7

Sleepy but trying to stay up for the new page. Feel like a little kid waiting for Santa Claus. 🙂

    • Hiya, I’m having a lazy morning while I still can (vacation).

      • Morgan

Ooh, that sounds nice. Lazy mornings are the best.

    • Bei Dawei

      Shpadoinkly!

  • davefragments

BTW – that lamp in panel two is one of the ugliest lamps I’ve ever seen.

    • Bei Dawei

Careful! The artist probably has one.

      • davefragments

        That’s OK.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Really? It looks kind of like an Art Nouveau-style one to me, which I love.

      • davefragments

        yeah, I’m more Swedish modern

        • stickfigurefairytales

Ughhhh, modern. Not really my jam.

  • fujoshifanatic

Oh wow, I get to participate in camp for once! Been staying up watching hurricane updates for Irma and I can’t take it anymore now that I found out my building is in an evacuation zone. 🙁 I hope everyone is doing okay. I just finished a couple of movies earlier today as well; Breakfast at Tiffany’s for homework, and The Neverending Story for fun.Two of my favorite movies for very different reasons.

    • davefragments

Two good but very different movies.

And I do hope you heed the evacuation and your return to nothing damaged.

    • Stay safe!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Do you just need to be alert and ready to go if they do issue an evacuation order? (As opposed to needing to evacuate now?)

      • *hugs*

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Hi Doki! *hugs back*

          • How are you doing?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Pretty good, thanks! I officially move into my new house on Thursday. But I won’t actually have internet until the 14th (grrr!) so I will probably be back here at my parents’ for camping on Friday anyway.

Fortunately, my new place is less than a ten-minute walk away from where I am now. Makes things much easier.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            How are you doing, Doki?

          • eh, sleep is all messed up, lots of headaches

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Poor Doki! *cuddles*

          • *cuddles*

          • Last time we moved, it took them like 10 days before they decided to show up and give us internet.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Not having internet is a terrible, terrible fate.

          • It’s awful. I don’t know how we lived before the interwebs existed. We kept having to go down to either Starbucks or McDonalds to check log on to see the world.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I remember back in the day when my family had only one computer, with dial-up internet. It was agony having to wait my turn to go read English transcripts of the original Sailor Moon episodes.

(We also did not have cable tv.)

          • Oh gosh, one computer with dial up and then being grounded from it!

          • …that did not stop Doki ^_^ Doki was sneaky.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Hee hee hee.

          • I hated waiting my turn for the dial up!! A lot of time I’d have to wait until everyone went to bed before I could get on. Or worse having only the one line and calls couldn’t get through.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Or when it wouldn’t connect! So much time spent staring at the AOL boot-up panels, just willing that lightning bolt to give way to the golden key.

          • H! Yes. That sound. I think it’s permanently embedded in my brain.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I want to try typing out the noise but I can’t possibly do it justice.

          • Is it possible to truly duplicate that sound?

          • stickfigurefairytales

If I ever encounter a foley artist who can replicate it without resorting to a recording, I will award them an Oscar right away. (At least, if I had an Oscar to award.)

          • Ha! Indeed!

          • It’s permanently embedded into all our brains… those of us old enough that had to deal with it.

          • Truth. At least I’m not alone. 🙂

      • fujoshifanatic

The official order goes out tomorrow morning. I’m trying to make arrangements now (I have three cats in tow), so I can get a jumpstart on the traffic. It’s really getting ridiculous out there; they had police at all the supermarkets and gas stations just to keep order. Thankfully my university cancelled classes for the rest of the week, so I won’t have to worry about that. And my parents’ house is less than an hour away. Just want to make sure I have everything I need to shelter with the kitties away from home for a while in case the storm surge prevents us from getting back for a while. :-

        • davefragments

It’s all those little things that are hard and mount up.

        • stickfigurefairytales

That is very tough. I wish you the best of luck getting out safely, and I hope that you will be able to return soon without any damage to your place!

    • Oh no! I hope both you, friends, family and home will be safe. Are you living above ground?

      • fujoshifanatic

Thanks Danish; my family is to the north and west, so (hopefully) they’ll be okay. While I’m on one of the upper floors of my building, it’s in the path of the possible storm surge, which is expected to be pretty bad for this one. 🙁 Lots of flooding expected in the area.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Stay safe!

        • Be safe, don’t take any chances at all.

A friend of mine got hit by Harvey. Luckily not the worst part of it but still enough that they had a foot of water around the house. Luckily for her, their house is 3 feet off the ground, so house in itself only took some wind damage, but her grandpa living next door did not have a raised house, so he’s currently living with them after his house flooded.

          • stickfigurefairytales

There has been so much devastation from Harvey. I’m glad your friend’s grandfather was okay – not to mention your friend and the rest of her family.

          • fujoshifanatic

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s grandpa, but very glad that their house was somewhat spared so that they are able to help him. I hope they are able to recover and rebuild soon.

    • Morgan

Oh no, please stay safe. We’re keeping an eye out too, probably going to evacuate in the next couple of days.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I hope you stay safe too!

        • Morgan

Thank you. How have you been?

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve been good, thank you! A little stressed getting ready for my move, but I’m excited too.

          • Morgan

Ooh, stress is understandable. Moving is a pain. But that is exciting. 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

It is! On both counts. ;D

          • Kate G

I’m moving too. It’s definitely stressful!

      • davefragments

Stay dry and beware of Irma – It’s a nasty one.

        • fujoshifanatic

Thanks Dave; yes, this one is even scarier looking than Andrew, and I was there for that one too. When my friend and I drove through the area most affected by that storm, it looked like a bomb had hit the area. We saw an entire mall that had been flattened. Pretty scary stuff.

          • davefragments

Andrew made the scientific journals for the damage it did.

Irma is over a too warm ocean and most of Florida is less than 40 feet above sea level.

BTW – remove anything that can blow. Everything loose turns into a missile

      • fujoshifanatic

I hope you stay safe as well. It’s crazy; depending on the path it takes, my brother is talking about renting a van and driving the whole family up out of the state!

        • Morgan

Any idea where you’d go? Apparently all the hotels in Georgia are booked up. We’re thinking Alabama…

          • fujoshifanatic

We’re not even sure; I have a friend in Atlanta, and she’s trying to see if she can help us find something. After that, our next closest relatives are in New York. if worse comes to worst, we may have to drive to Atlanta and fly to New York from there. :- My friend would be better able to accommodate three spoiled cats than their five people.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve got a new and mostly empty house in northeast Ohio!

          • stickfigurefairytales

*new to me, that is. The house itself is about 97 years old.

  • Yes, Kyle, he did kiss you, And boy was it some kiss! Shut up and let him kiss you again.

    • davefragments

And not only on the lips, too

  • Horns was … interesting…

    • davefragments

A very different sort of love story

      • I feel so bad for Dan’s character…

        • davefragments

I do and i don’t feel for the character

I’m not sure what to make of the ending.

          • His parents didn’t want him, his brother tried to make a move on his girl, his “best” friend wasn’t a friend at all, the whole town turned on him… The Morse Code was cute. I could have done without the over the top gore scenes though…

          • davefragments

            His family was awful.
I’m not sure that I agree with his turning completely into a demon. That’s my reservation. Also, I didn’t see that move as too gory.

          • It wasn’t that gory, but the gory parts they did have seem over the top? over done? poorly done? not done correctly?

          • davefragments

I think more on the lines of “stylized” because of the demonic aspects.

          • AH, that had that horror movie-ish quality to them that I don’t think really fit. I think they could have been better done.

          • davefragments

            I understand that.

          • Sorry it took me a while to properly convey.

….I now have the urge to watch Ninth Gate

          • Bei Dawei

It’s weird but good. (Satanists probably love it.) Very different from the novel, you have to think of it as its own thing.

          • Ninth Gate is an interesting movie

          • SPOILER WARNING!
Everything in this convo thread between Dave and Doki below this comment is spoilers for the movie Horns, if you haven’t seen it 🙂

          • davefragments

oooh, I forgot about that. Thanks for remind me.

            SPOILER ALERT for HORNS

          • oops

  • Wait, is Kyle wearing skinny jeans? I never pegged him for the type.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Huh, I was thinking khakis, but I guess I can see it. Yeah, I wouldn’t have guessed that for Kyle, either, but maybe it’s part of his newly increasing confidence.

      • Was never a fan of skinny jeans on guys. But at least he doesnt low ride them.

        • stickfigurefairytales

I’m not really either, but I guess if it makes him happy…

      • Of course I can’t see the word khakis without hearing Steve Irwin saying Kah kees.

    • Songbird

My headcanon; Kyle’s feeling a little more free than he did before the demonic mess, so he’s trying some stuff out. Clothes, people, etc. It’s what I did when I came out anyway.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, he should try out different hair styles!

        • He should grow his hair out.

          • Bei Dawei

He should grow a beard like Duncan’s! Then he’d look like a leprechaun.

          • stickfigurefairytales

…Now I have the bizarre urge to see what Kyle would look like with a Snively Whiplash-style mustache.

          • fujoshifanatic

Oddly enough, I keep picturing Kyle doing a jig and singing the Lucky Charms song. “They’re magically delicious!” Only he’s not talking about cereal…

          • davefragments

            Now that’s just cruel…
            hahahahahahahaha

          • davefragments

            Mad Sweeney in American Gods

          • I’d like to see Duncan with long hair. That would be interesting.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Oooh, yes!

          • He’d look like a pirate I bet. A really sexy pirate.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, we should give him an eyepatch too!

          • Well, Pirate!Duncan from the infinite universes, had a peg leg if I recall correctly.

            …Wait, what?

          • Very very many pages back (so a year or two maybe more) we were all talking about the infinite types the various characters could be. I was certain Pirate!Duncan would have a peg leg. I think an eyepatch too.

            Oooh, nice!

          • Yup, yup. Inspired one of my characters. lol

            Wotan from Die Valkyrie

          • Or Fabio from any romance cover. lol

Fabio is too pretty for me but I wouldn’t kick him out of bed (to tell the truth)

          • Well I think Duncan would probably be sexier.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Agreed.

          • Skudplastr

            I’m doing that now!

  • Sorry for the slower page update tonight. Should be up shortly. 🙂
