The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 28

162 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 28

Diego lives! (At least a little bit…)

In the comments section, some readers had some questions about how long this bonus comic is going to continue and why I create bonus comics outside of the main story. This was my reply.

Over the weekend, I had a great time at the Webcomic Rampage in Austin, TX! I got to meet a real life Mitch who looked a lot like our Mitch (and who is now reading the comic), I got to eat some amazing food (including “sushi” made with steak and bacon), I got to hang out with some very cool creators I’ve known for some time like TJ and Amal‘s EK Weaver (and meet some awesome new creators, like Ngozi Ukazu of Check, Please who I fully expect to be ruling the world in the next couple years), and I got to meet a ton of our amazing readers, many of whom drove hundreds of miles just to say hi.

And one even made me something totally awesome to carry my books in:

Isn’t that totally cool? 😀 It was really a wonderful time and I am grateful to all of you who made it so special to me!

But my Con days aren’t over yet! This weekend I’ll be on the East Coast in Oaks, PA for Nijicon! Nijicon is billed as “a convention that is for all fans of male/male romance and other LGBTQ representations in various media, regardless of your own gender, sexual identity, ethnicity, etc.”  I’ll have Artifice books and advance copies of The Young Protectors books there as well as some very special new, sexy prints and cards. If you’re nearby, please stop by and say hello!

So! The goggles come off! Things must be getting serious! Will Cory’s power continue to expand out of control? Or will Flyboy be able to guide him back to the light? And what’s going to happen to all those flying Benjamins? Surely these kids have time to grab at least a couple out of the air!

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Listen to Mitch!

    • Chris Dangerfield

Oh pishah… he’s 15… what does he know? Go ahead and let Cory open a portal to hell. Then Laampros comes out, but Dunc and Sirc are no where near with the ORRRRB-KEY… thus the plot is foiled and the world lives to see another day……….

(chris looks around to see if anyone’s buying it and decides to go look at some of the nsfw TYP portraits instead… ha)

  • Mitch! I know the safety goggles got all smashed, but you just exposed your true identity!

    • Chris Dangerfield

And adorably done, I must say!

      • *ruffles Mitch’s hair*

        • Chris Dangerfield

          • Of course it is. I’m sure that he takes great care of it.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Young people these days. Why, back in the Silver Age of comics heroes went to insane lengths to protect their secrit idennuties: like using their superspeed to create after-images that made it look like they were in two places at once, building a robot duplicate, or calling in a favour to have Batman play stand-in.

Say, you don’t suppose Annihilator might have had a point when he told Kyle that there’s only so much care that the kids can be expected to take? Maybe this is a theme?

      • I wouldn’t be surprised..

      • Klaus

My favorite is when Batman put just a little bit of hair dye on his forehead, so that when he took off his mask, Batgirl would think he was disguised as Bruce Wayne.

        • Kate G

Or the few time when Bruce had to work during Batman hours but everyone expecting Batman to be there so Robin had to take over?

          • Tyler Griffin

I think Alfred even put on the Mantle a couple of times.

      • Columbine

Remember the Justice League cartoons? There was a bit where Lex Luthor got all excited about being able to unmask the Flash and learn who he was and- Mask comes off ‘I have *no idea* who this is.’

  • Cydney Sabin

    I KNEW IT!! *Happy dance*

  • See! Cash grab machine. Mitch would be a master at it. Then again…maybe not since he got sidelined.

  • Kate G

    • Close. Third I believe. 🙂

      • Kate G

        *sniff* Maybe one day.

        • It’ll happen. I’m sure. I began to despair for myself.

  • Chris Dangerfield

Okay the seriously real question for ME is why, in Panel #3, looking something like a young Harrison Ford, Mitch pulls off those goggles and WHY OH WHY DOESN’T KANYA grab him by the ears and go for a major lip-lock smackaroo. I mean Doki wouldn’t even wait for the goggles to come off!!!!

    Yes…. Mitch is THAT cute.

So, Kanya? I mean is everyone LGBTQ in this AU? You know me, I’m a Spooky/Kyle diehard and him in that panel is so adorbs that the 15 year-old barrier would be reallllllllllly tough to remember (omg that’s so pathetic).

So Kanya, girlfriend, srsly, whasssssup? Snog already?

Heeeeeeeeee…. (more nonsense when my brain re-engages).

    • Kate G

I kissed my computer when I saw that panel. #truestory

    • Saxon_Brenton

Because she wants to survive and is smart enough to put everything else on hold until Cory has been talked down or otherwise been neutralized? I mean, distracting the superhero who seems to have the remaining closest emotional connection to the berserk telekinetic is probably a bad tactical move right at the moment.

    • The problem is, I think Kanya’s been knocked in the head too much today (I mean, she’s got that doozy of a black eye at least, but I’ve lost track of the injuries we’ve seen her attain)…

      Just playin’ 😉

Honestly though Chris, you’re usually so intellectual and contemplative in your comments, it’s quite amusing to hear you like this, seemingly “intoxicated” 😛

      • Chris Dangerfield

Whaaaaaaa? Heh. Thassss redonkulous… S’oooooookay… we’ll go with Kanya concussion. OooOoOOooo….

        • Tyler Griffin

Did you just close out your comment with the Dr. Who theme sound? 😛

        • Hahaha!
          Nuuu, you’rrre redonkulousssss~

  • Kate G

Oh, ouch. Mitch is definitely going to feel that in the morning. Falling on your lower back is NO FUN.

However, now we have a problem. Diego is alive. Cory is creating a tornado of epic proportions to basically protect himself from the trauma he’s endured (and really, vent his rage.) How does one get to Diego before he actually, um, dies? Mitchell’s flying powers are moot in this case as he’ll just get tossed around everyone cross your fingers, toes, feet and legs that Cory still trusts Mitchell enough…and he can control his telekinesis enough so all of that flying debris doesn’t go topside on our hero, Cory and Diego!

Also, I leave for the Special Olympics on Friday and compete on Saturday so all typos are due to major jitters! I am only competing in, like, the third from the highest class in the equestrian area so, yea, no pressure coming from someone who started at the very bottom in February. >.>

    • davefragments

Good luck. Hope you place well.

      • Kate G

Thanks! I’m going to try. The biggest thing will be making sure Scooby doesn’t abuse any horses. I think there may be 7 other competitors in my level which means…very little horse space. Hopefully he doesn’t kick any horses. Please oh please let him not kick any horses. *crosses fingers* <-this has happened at a show

    • Jeldenil

So cool! All the good lucks. And try to enjoy it 🙂

      • Kate G

        I’mma gonna try!

    • Columbine

      Good luck pet.

      • Kate G

    • Good luck!

    • Wow that’s awesome, an Olympian in our presence! Good luck!!

      • Kate G

Well, more like an amateur Olympian. It’s my state’s Special Olympics, not the big fancy schmancy SPECIAL OLYMPICS! (The ones no one ever watches because it’s not really advertised well and comes on after the hubbub of the Olympics.)

But thanks! It still is a big deal. It’s my first one.

        • You’ll be on TV? Cool! Hey, that’s still an Olympian in my book!

          • Kate G

I don’t think there will be any TV cameras. Journalists, yes, but it’s a closed circuit arena and we’re all special needs so TV media being there will probably be a no-go. I’ve never been there before so I don’t know.

My name is all ready in press release PDFs for athletes expected to participate and I can see where I am in the list. It’s nerve wracking!

          • Ah ok, only light media coverage. I suppose it’s the best balance!

    • Very nice analysis, Kate! Fun for me to read. 🙂

And I wish you very good luck at the Special Olympics!

      • Kate G

Thanks! It’s for fun so no biggie if I don’t win a big medal or whatever, but we’ve all been thrown into a nervous tizzy. Why, one might ask?

They changed the pattern. If there is any way to get a bunch of special needs equestrians, their people (aka their parents and family) and their coaches into a nervous tizzy, change the pattern all of the equestrians will have to run three days before competition. I spent my entire lesson learning a new circuit. Uuuuuuuuuugh. If they change it again, I might lose my mind! I am writing it down before I go to bed so I don’t accidentally do the wrong one on Saturday!

    • Keneu

Good luck, and I hope you have fun!

  • davefragments

My computer decided to act up and I’m finally able to get to read the page. Bad computer, bad computer…

The big question is how angry and how out of control is Cory?

    • He looks like he’s still screaming, so I’d say pretty angry.

      • davefragments

That much for sure (as the kids say) but I’ve seen teenage boys having tantrums and they can carry on for hours.

        • very very true.

        • Chris Dangerfield

You mean that’s supposed to stop when you reach 20? Ohhhhhhhhhhh…. ummmmmm…..

          • davefragments

            Not always.

          • Klaus

You mean you are supposed to care what you are supposed to do?

  • Michael

I knew he was still alive.

Now Cory just needs to calm down so they can get him to a hospital.

    Easier said than done, right?

  • Jeldenil

Aww, what a cute bag you got, Alex. And from such a cute fan, too.

    • Helen Taylor

      Thank you!!

  • Dumb Clicker

First post, been lurking here for like… a couple years now. But anyway, what beautiful art, I think this is the first time I’ve seen an artist take the trouble to represent goggle/glasses marks.
Also, I know her interests are temporarily united with Mitch’s at the moment (wants to stay alive and Mitch is the best way to do it) but guard lady standing behind Mitch seems like an ominous development to say the least

    • Welcome to the comments!!

      • Dumb Clicker

        Thank you 🙂

    • Kate G

Welcome to the lovely comment forum. Grab a soda and chill out.

    • Tyler Griffin

      Welcome to the clubhouse

  • Adam Black

I just noticed Mitch was stabbed.

    • He was shot. 🙂

      • Sapfo

        was he? XD

        • Yes, the bullet grazed his arm. And he slapped a bandaid over it.

          • Sapfo

oh yes, the magic bandaid of super magic…. How is that working by the way?

          • Well it seems to be holding in the blood.

    • Sapfo

Congrats on getting the first comment Mr Black 😀

  • Mary Klemzak

Nice!! I live in the Midwest. Tornadoes can be devastating. It’s not the wind, its the debris that’s deadly. Sharp glass and metals. Soft things become weapons, at an accelerated speed.

Oh and do read Check Please!! It’s amazing! Hockey bros Ransom and Holster(but you don’t need to know anything, they explain some of it!) Jack and Bitty are adorable, as well as the 3 “Frogs”, Nursey, Dex and Chowder, a very cool petite manager lady Lardo, pot smoking, but potty mouth feminist P. “Shitty” Knight . There’s a bonus twitter account by “Bitty” who gets chirped constantly for being on twitter, and posts snippits of college and hockey life(amazing bonus stuff)

    Check out the wikia!!_Wiki

  • Columbine

Hmmm Mitch needs better safety specs, a decent pair designed for a chemistry lab can survive multiple explosions close up without breaking. Not that uh…..we personally tested that of course…… Much.

    • Yeah, and what will Tsunami say when Mitch turns up needing a new pair? I really don’t think Mitch is that good of an actor/liar to cover that up.

      • bronakopdin

he could seriously just say they fell down or that sth fell on them… he’s a teenager… not every teenager is very careful with their stuff ^^
in fact I guess that would be way more credible than the truth.
We have to remember that noone knows about Mitch’s nightmissions and they all were sooo surprised when he admitted to it in the previous bonus story, which again means noone would have ever expected it.

      • 1) Those are a part of his secret night work suit

        2) He is probably going to explain to his secret helpers that he needs new goggles for his night work (Alex has said that he has helpers that made his night suit and knows about his unsanctioned actions)

        3) I am more concerned about how Mitch is going to explain all the damage he has taken to the team….would any of them believe “I fell down the stairs”?

        • Klaus

          “The stairs fell down me”?

        • timemonkey

I was flying to the meeting, wasn’t paying attention and flew into a wall. I’m fine though.

          • Tyler Griffin

“A wall, a couple of windows, and an Ammo bunker”

      • Rick T (dereule101)

An icicle fell and hit his eye, breaking the goggles!

      • Tyler Griffin

        Really big bug.

  • bronakopdin

I can totally scrifice the glasses… that Kanya (glad she’s worried about Mitch!) now knows his whole face might become a problem but not at hand, there are more important issues… like getting through to Cory now! I really hope he’s listening to Mitch! And that he even CAn listen! That tornado and everything flying around must be hella loud!
I gues Mitch is going to try to get to the “eye of the storm” and try to speak to Cory from a closer range? He could also try to touch his shoulder or sth depending on the situation though…
I really think that Mitch is saying the truth, why would he lie to Cory about this seeing as he is already reacting this way to the thought of his brother’s death!
He’d only react even harder if it came out to be a lie afterwards 🙁
So lets hope Mitch can calm him down soon so they can take Diego to a hospital >////<

  • ….Is no one going to comment on just how awesome Mitch is being? The more I look at the last page, I think Mitch twisted a little bit so that he took the brunt of the hit…and then while they are falling, he twists their positions so that Kanya lands on top of him.

    He is just TOO PRECIOUS.

He has been shot, hit by debris and he is still doing everything he can to prevent harm coming to others.

    • He’s a real trooper!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Mitch is so great!

    • Klaus

Kyle is not the only one who’s defining personality characteristic is that he is a hero.

      • Phyre Storm

Which is just another reason to ship them.

  • Pikinanou

Next update will take forever! I can’t wait that long to see what happens 🙁

    • Chris Dangerfield

Agreed… OOOOH TARDIS where are you!

      • Tyler Griffin

Lat I heard, Capaldi parked it on an Event Horizon to refuel and headed off for coffee.

  • Aaannd.. in my head the pairing name for Mitch/Cory just became ‘High 5’ xD

    • Klaus

      Not F5?

      • Tyler Griffin

I think I gotta go with F5 here.

      • Naah, a F5 isn’t a possitive thing to be around, and High 5 is much more possitive and upbeat. And it still fits as a reference to both of them. F5 sounds too much like Cory alone. We want a good pairing, not a horrible and destructive one.

    • timemonkey

Considering what she’s seeing them both doing she probably won’t want them pissed at her.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Enhanced hearing AND super speed…..Hmmmm… kinda superhero!

  • Toli Bera

you fibbin? I think you fibbin. why you fibbin?

  • Mitch R.

    Shoutout to Webcomic Rampage tho!!

    • The Mitch Alex met? Welcome to the comic and the community 🙂

      • Mitch R.

        haha yup, and thank you!

    • Tyler Griffin

Welcome new face. We are an enthusiastic and occasionally intimidating fandom, but we are all pretty friendly, welcome, again, to the clubhouse 😀

      • Mitch R.

Thanks, man, good to be here!

    • Welcome welcome!!

  • Nate

Everyone is missing the important fact here:

How utterly *cute* Flyboy looks with mussed-up hair!

    • Michael

Isn’t his hair always mussed up?

      • Nate

Yes, but now it’s extra mussed!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Doki totally called this a couple of pages ago! Nice work, Doki!!

  • Frank_821

I’m enjoying this bonus comic very much. I really like a chance to spotlight one of the other characters.

My hubby and I were amongst the Austin fans who made a trip to Webcomic Rampage. I’m jazzed to have the first hard copy of the Young Protectors. My husband is jazzed with all those special posters he bought :p

    • Thank you, Frank! It was really great to meet you and your hubby! 🙂 (And I’m glad that those posters will have a nice home!)

    • They are gorgeous, aren’t they? 🙂 I bought two posters and twp post cards at YaoiCon last month. It took me an alost embarrasing long time to pick the two posters I wanted. I knew could get two, and I ended up getting the ones with the ‘kissing theme’. Your hubby probably know whjich two I mean *lol*

      • Frank_821

yes. Rick also took a long time picking. He had a hard time choosing 4 posters. We both swooned over that poster of the Annihilator 🙂

  • Amberella

I really adore how he saves people indiscriminately… good guys, bad guys, guns or no guns. He’s here to save people, damnit, and that’s what he’s gonna do!

  • Jason Moon

Man, I bet he’s regretting not having backup!

  • kamishiro

and mitch is just such sweaatie 🙂

    • Derkins

      YAY FOR MITCH. o.o

  • Epistasthai

I love this bonus comic! thank you so much for giving it to us – I like all the little (and not so little) side stories.

  • Tyler Griffin

See! Kanya ain’t no cold blooded killer. She’s professional and loyal to her bosses, but not unpredictable or cruel.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Yes. I was initially concerned that Kanya might be faking to at least some extent, in order to ensure that she gets to be one of the people that the superhero saves. It was quite nice to read in the script email that she’s genuine.

  • Shinashi

    I’ll definitely be grabbing money…

  • Derkins

I like that the security guard lady is actually concerned about Mitch here. I’m sure it wins her more points with all of us. 🙂

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve got a rather nasty cold at the moment, so I don’t think I’ll be able to make camping this evening, but I hope you all have fun!

    • Poor Sticky! Have some Hot chocolate and feel better!

    • Tyler Griffin

Awe, colds suck. I’ve had a seasonal allergy cough for three weeks now since the golden rods started blooming so I feel you. (well, I don’t ACTUALLY feel you, that might be a little creepy ;P )

    • Michael

      aww, get well soon!

    • Feel better soon sweetie!

  • Michael

    Woo, camping! I made it!

    How’s youse all garn tod’y?

    • Waiting for dinner.

      • Michael

Nice, I’m having a garden salad for lunch. What is the dinner you’re waiting for?

        • S’ghetti and meatballs.

          • Michael

I haven’t had meatballs in a long time, I find them to be less entropically satisfying than bolognese.

Anyway, while we’re waiting, what’s news? It’s been a while since I remembered/was able to camp.

          • Well it’s just a half-assed recipe, but having a meat sauce sometimes just isn’t what I want.

Not much going on that I know of. 😐

          • Michael

            Fair enough.

In my news, I got knocked out on Wednesday. 😀

In sparring (kung fu). Crescent kick to the side of my face.

The guy was very apologetic, because it’s supposed to be non-contact.

          • Damn. That’s a hard hit.

          • Michael

That’s the weird thing, the impact wasn’t hard (no bruising or soreness after), but because it went -through- and turned my head around, it threw my balance/coordination out the window.

Point to note, I have a congenital hearing/inner ear condition that means my balance/coordination is already fragile to begin with…

But he was well aware of that fact and still failed to pull his kick back. 😐

          • Doesn’t sound like much of an accident on his part.

          • Michael

Maybe not in that split-second instant, but he definitely didn’t intend on or premeditate it.

It is a good lesson, though, in why people need to leave their personal issues and life problems out of the sparring ring. You get emotional about anything, you lose control and focus, and that leads to injuries.

          • davefragments

Many people have a glass jaw but it sounds like you have a glass side of the head.

          • Michael

It’s all down to the semicircular canals, and the hairlike nerves within. Mine are all misshapen and sparse, instead of the luscious flowing locks of a healthy inner ear.

          • davefragments

I like Linguini better than plain spaghetti

          • Linguine and clams sauce? I could go for some of that…

          • davefragments

With Mushrooms. I made that a couple times in college at the Frat house. i was really popular those days.

          • Sounds good.

          • Michael

Rotini is my pasta of choice, it’s very versatile and goes great with thick, chunky sauces.

          • davefragments

I have a bag of rigatoni imported from Italy and 12 of them make a meal. Big, thick and delicious. Add in the crusty bread for meatball sandwiches and I’m happy.

    • Tyler Griffin

Just finished a RuPaul’s Drag Race marathon, so somewhere between glitter shitting fabulous, and horrified at the subtle and casual misogyny and racism inherent in the culture.

      • Michael

        That… sounds like fun…

        • Tyler Griffin

I have a love/hate relationship with Drag Culture, lol.

          • Michael

I have a hate relationship with drag racing.

The cars, not the people. Especially on suburban streets at 3am.

The people are fine, I don’t know enough about that culture to comment.

      • davefragments

I don’t know if I could take a marathon of Ru Paul. Not all day.

  • davefragments

    Made it.
BTW – Masterpiece Theaters Fall thing is showing Billy Elliot.
There’s a lot of accents and Oy’s in that show.

    • Michael

I really enjoyed the musical version of Billy Elliot, especially the grandma’s song.

And in the moooooorniiiiiiiiiiing… we were sober.

So sad, but also a little funny.

      • davefragments

They are giving their “well” wishes to Maggie Thatcher right now.
It’s the most halloweenish Christmas show I’ve ever seen.

    • Michael

I’m kind of trying to imagine Dick Van Dyke doing his cockney accent from Mary Poppins in the setting of Billy Elliot.

      • davefragments

This isn’t cockney. At least I don’t think it is.

And let me say — they aren’t polite like Dick Van Dyke. It’s been bleeped a half dozen times, so far.

        • Michael

No, cockney is south London, this is set in the north, just south of Newcastle.

Still, I’m sure Dick would have had a (comically inept) go at a Newcastle accent if given the opportunity.

          • davefragments

            It is a distinctive accent.

  • Gonna watch the new Terminator tonight!

  • davefragments

    patreon signs have started

  • jreed3842

Well crap. I’ve pretty much missed camping… *sigh* Oh well.
See you all on the other page!

  • davefragments
