Damn, that dark sky is spreading and we thought that the portal would be a local phenomena… It’s traveling around the world

    • Saxon_Brenton

Gotta admit, I thought the portal would be a localised hole in space-time, and the demons would come through at that point and then spread out at DarnFast(tm) speeds. But I suppose the nature of the threat could be interpretted as merging dimensions…

      • davefragments

i was thinking almost exactly the same as you were…

        Then this happened.

      • Klaus

The deal was that the silver dou would open a gate for Laampros. Once here, he would be able to bring his forces across.

      • Adam Black

Yeah, I think this may be the walls breaking down.

  • Omg.. am I (almost) getting my comment on last page fulfilled? About how this mini comic will end.

    • davefragments

      Hi DanishWolf…

I think this is going to move right to Laampros and a huge fight at the Ring of Bones

      • Chris Dangerfield

I like the, “the Ring of Bones” it has an epic ring to it!

        • davefragments

Well, the laundry made “Ring around the Collar” Popular and the Plague and “Ring Around the Rosie” popular.
Alex is working on Ring of Bones…

          • Chris Dangerfield

Ha! One day when he’s a world-wide conglomerate – “Woolfson International.” Then we can all say we knew him when… 🙂

      • And will this this mini comic with Cory end with Ms. R going to find a spare suit for him?
That inner image of these two getting ready to suit Cory up for war that I had.

        • davefragments

I think we go directly to the clearing with TYP and Laampros..

          • Yup, when we return to the main story, but the end page of these 6 pages with Cory is what I wondered about. What Corynand Ms. R will do.

Whether Cory, the military , or any other meta-human -young or older- make it there, to help the team, is the question to be seen in the main story 🙂

          • davefragments

I’m hoping Birgit has access to rocket launchers and big rifles. That’s a lot to ask into pages.

            Maybe demons appear?

          • Adam Black

I think we are in the main story.

        • Klaus

The arming of the hero is a mainstay of heroic epics.

    • Gregory In Seattle

It does look like these events are concurrent to the opening of the gate.

  • Chris Dangerfield

    Adorbs = Cory

    • davefragments

      He feels indebted to Cory.

      • Chris Dangerfield

I’m not sure if you mean Mitch or Cory, but I’m willing to be indebted to both of them… ahem… when they are of age……… of course.

        • davefragments

oops. I meant Cory feels indebted to Mitch.
          I’ll fix it.

        • Adam Black

You mean when they are drawn of age.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Of course! :}

    • Sapfo

I think you read my mind!

  • kuku

    How can she find Mitchell?

I’d love to see Cory help out! Yay Cory!

    • bronakopdin

      You know what I thought?
Mitch is a kind of rich kid, Ms. Roggenbauer sth like his governess…
      -> phone and GPS? x’D

    • Adam Black

MItch prob has chip in his head or something.
He has strange Connections at home. He not just rich, hes connected to political power .

I think he may be Duncan-related and raised by the govt agents as a force for good.

Alex has given us massive hints hes Superboy like character.

  • Nate

    A thought…

Cory doesn’t say “you know where Mitch is”, or “you can track him”.

He says “you can FIND him”.

I wonder if Ms. R. has some powers of her own….

(Lovely shadow work, too. 🙂 )

    • Pietro7

Now that’s a very interesting thought! She has the feel of someone who is much more than she seems. Thanks Nate.

      • Nate

For some reason, I’m thinking android (or, I suppose, gynoid).

No real reason, just the way she phrases things….

  • Go help Mitch, Cory. I am sure they wouldn’t say no to any extra help at the moment.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I dunno. Commander might be willing to let another minor into combat for the same reason she let Flyboy and Fluke: it’s literally hell on earth and if they fail then everybody dies horribly. But I suspect that Commander would be leery of having an untrained combatant, possibly getting in the way. And if she knew about Cory’s previous psychotic-break-causing-a-TK-maelstrom then she’d definitely view him as a liability. And then there’s Tsunami. I’m still trying to decide whether he’s say ‘No’ because of concern for Cory’s safety, or just on general principles.

      • I think “No” and “I don’t like it” are Tsu-Tsu’s favorite words.

  • Squishy

Yay! Cory in main story arc maybies??

  • Squishy

Right!? I love the colors used here!

  • I wonder how many meta-humans that are left on earth? Not that many/any of them might make it to the final battle in chapter 5, but a random speculation that I’m still curious about.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. My gut reaction was that we just didn’t have enough information to able to even guess at that, but then I went back to the source material and checked the ‘Rise Of The Supervillains’ op-ed text piece at the start of the vol.1 trade paperback. Mr Shepherd gives the line that there are “fewer than 3,000 [superhumans] estimated to exist on the entire planet”, and also cites in-universe studies explaining that most are either on organised superhero teams or at least are law abiding. So, proportionately very few supervillains, in stark contrast to most other four-colour superhero universes.

That raises the question of how reliable those estimates are. How well are they are estimating the presence of superhumans who are (at least in many story universes) beings who break the rules of reality? Does statistical analysis have any more hold on superhumans than the laws of physics? Have these estimates really been able to account for street kids like Cory?

And then there’s the question of how many of the adult heroes and villains actually are off-planet. If they were recruiting the villains, then this suggests a big and important task. But depending on the nature of the problem, where it was taking place, and what sort of resources they had to deal with a non-Earthly environment, there may have been some people who wouldn’t have been useful.

TLDR: even with the hard <3,000 number, there is still too unknowns to properly answer.

      • And how rapidly have the number risen? As in, how many of the superhumans’ (or any super-gene carrier) kids came out with abilities too?
But that is a question for a much longer time term than this comic covers 🙂

It would just be interesting to know how many ‘rejects’ and/or not powerful enough for a team there are left on earth vs. how many are gone.
But again, this is just my speculations, and would only be needed if this had ended with a long war against Laampros and his demons.
(Of course it could become a more relevant question, depending how Alex finishes this arc/comic)

        • Samurai Jack

And is it even truly quantifiable, in a universe that also includes aliens and demonic (and likely angelic) beings from other dimensions? The numbers shouldn’t be important.

    • Klaus

What is the range of powers of those metahumans? Are they all as powerful as the YP members, or do some have clearly supernatural but fairly useless powers? Fluke is considered to be one such by the official teams. How many even know that they have powers? E.g. if a man has the power to survive at great ocean depths, how would he find out?

  • Squishy

I’m not sure if this was discused before (I’m new) but it occurs to me that in Cory’s previous story line he and his brother were stealing from the mob… and the Anihilator is a super powered villain that (works for? or maybe runs?) the mob. So they were probably stealing from the Anihilator. This would in part explain why everyone was so nervous about the operation dispite having Cory’s powers on their side. In fact it sounds like there are very few supervillains besides the Anihilator and Platinum Priestess still in operation (save for the crazy magic users that pop up every so often). So the Alihilator’s mob might have been able to take out most serious competition with his powers, as they wouldn’t have the same advantage.

    • Interesting thoughts. Didn’t really think about how many connections Duncan could still have with any mob, or if he’s still deeple involved (but keeping it hidden).

And welcome to the comic and comments section 🙂

  • Oh yes, join the Young Protectors and banish that naughty naked demon back to hell where he belongs. 😀

  • Jeldenil

I wonder who qualifies as a ‘real superhero’ in Cory’s book and what the heck are they doing right now.

    • Klaus

The adult ones. The ones who fight supervillains. The YP are just a search and rescue team.

      • Adam Black

You mean **Were** just a search and rescue Team.
        They kind of graduated.

        • Klaus

          Cory doesn’t know that.

          • Adam Black

He knows MItch Freelances as a hero.

          • Klaus

Does he? Not unless Mitvh told him. He interfered because he recognized Cory’s voice.

          • Adam Black

I thught Cory would know why he was kicked off the other team. Plus Mitch did intervene there, without calling for backup.

    • bronakopdin

what Klaus said, the adult ones fight in an outer space war if memory serves right… I think Duncan and Kyle had a small talk about it at their breakfast date in Hongkong

  • bronakopdin

it might be so very inappropriate but with the pretty orange colours and sky “decorations” : Halloween is approaching x’D

and of course we KNEW that Cory might get involved later right? So many people predicted it somehow, we just thought he’d be a little more early to the party x’D

… not talking Halloween anymore… but maybe I should?

    • Adam Black

@alexwoolfson:disqus fooled everyone with this Interlude stuff, this time.
      ( even ME )

Somebody even complained last week, still not understanding we are in the real story in real time!

Next time Alex says comic relief “interlude” ….
i’m just going to brace for total apocalypse, characters getting sucked to hell, Alien Invasion, Body swapping,
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

      • bronakopdin

but he always says they are part of the main story? whoever was surprised didn’t fully understand what he mean then? xD

        • Squishy

“Now my previous bonus comics have very specifically not been “filler.” They were all meant to give character and plot information that’s important for the story.”
“I hadn’t intended to create a interlude at this point. So while this 6-page bonus comic does include some interesting character/world information, it’s about as close to filler as I’ll ever get.”
I think this gave the impression to some people (myself included) that the story would not be stongly related to what is going on in the main story line. It still might not actually affect the main story… maybe. This could just be “and here is Cory’s reaction to that is going on… but he can’t actually do anything at this point”.

          • bronakopdin

as close to filler as it will get for me means = still not filler

          • Squishy

Well, it’s no “curry of life”.

          • bronakopdin

I sadly don’t get it, you playing with Lion King’s “circle of Life” or? x’D

          • Squishy

It’s a Naruto reference. During one of their many filler arcs there is a recurring story line that revolves around Rock Lee and “Curry of Life”.

          • bronakopdin

LOL well I still have to watch Naruto one day, the only one of the “big 3” I’m missing ^^’
but then I was told to skup the filler arcs either way so I might never have happened to know about this x’D
            thx for explaining ^^

          • Adam Black

            do they find it?
            what color curry is it?

          • Squishy

It is sometimes black and sometimes shinny red? And they don’t ever look for it… I think… it’s just there because it is convenient for the plot. But it’s been years since I watched those episodes. So I’m fuzzy on the details.

          • Juliette Leroux

Well, then your faith in Alex is bigger than ours, but that way, we got to be pleasantly surprised.

          • bronakopdin

I wouldn’t call it faith but simply interpreting what he said there? xD
but yeah ofc interpretations are always depending on the person either way 🙂
In a way it sure is nice to be surprised 😀

          • Adam Black

“”it’s about as close to filler as I’ll ever get.”

See, he tricked us. The finding Yaoi interlude , and the truth and dare interlude were More characterization, than this. This was actually in-real-time action.

Alex has tricky ways. It was a nice surprise.

No matter happens to Cory, i bet Alex wont leave this as a hanging plot thread.

      • Juliette Leroux

Yes yes that! That’s a very nice surprise though. Alex knows how to treat his readers well.

      • Jason Moon

        You forgot “Trump getting elected.”

        • Adam Black

          Even the Apocalypse has limits.

          • Jason Moon

Which makes this, what, Diet Doomsday? Apocalypse Light? All the destruction with only half the calories?

          • Jason Moon

If you’re not careful, that entropy will just go right to your hips.

  • Klaus

Just where are Birgit and Cory? The fight took place in bright daylight, and here it is, or rather was, twilight. This must be a considerable distance east of the bone circle. If the effect is instantaneous, that is.

  • Adam Black

    Uh-OH!!
This is BAD! This looks like the walls have actually started breaking down!

Maybe the PP knew this would happen the whole time. It makes more sense that Laampros would break the walls if they are so weak , then he could be used to repair them.

Duncan you fool, your love of Silver Bikinis has doomed us all!

  • Shiny Gwilly

i love the shading/lighting on this page, so cool!
and i unno Cory, you have good intentions, but remember why you’re in your current location in the first place?
i do think he should still go though, never know if they need his help, and they prooooobably will….

    • Adam Black

Maybe. He cant control his powers as well.
      last time was a disaster.

  • Kate G

I love the third panel. I love how worried both Cory and Mrs. Rye look because even though Mrs. Rye has been around a while and known Mitch probably his whole life, she worries about him like a mother would.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND, I finally did a full 270 turn on the haunches! YAAAAAAAY! Just in time to do it tomorrow….and then Saturday! Because I will probably not be here Friday for camping (I leave for the Special Olympics), I’ll see you all next week. Wish me a horseshoe…what do they say in equestrian sports for good luck? I still haven’t figured that out.

    • Klaus

Whatever it is, it is hereby wished.

    • Juliette Leroux

I have no idea what you’re taking about as I am as bad a rider as you can be (though I love horses), but I wish you to succeed!

      • Kate G

Turn on the haunches. It’s a….just watch this. I have to do a 270 degree turn.

        https://youtu.be/SpBzDI3DY5g

        • Juliette Leroux

Ah yes, nice. Thanks for the didactic link!

          • Kate G

Sometimes I just can’t explain so I show. XD

    • davefragments

      Great. Good luck on Saturday.

    • Columbine

      Good luck!

  • Juliette Leroux

Ok, my first reaction was “YES! CORY TO THE RESCUE”, and then I remember what happened last time he was upset because a loved one was hurt… Not only is he young, but he was not trained at all. So, though it crushes me to say this, even if it would be great, heroic and romantic to go save Mitch, I think he needs to stay where he is. Pfff…

    • Klaus

      Desperate situations require desperate measures.

      • Juliette Leroux

Klaus, I WANT to agree with you, but the reasonnable person in me thinks “Nope, terrible idea”.

        • Columbine

I think it’s a terrible idea but………worst case loss-of-life-wise at the moment is that if Cory was dropped on ground zero and destroyed everything he’d have killed the sacrifices and the Young Protectors team. Which is horrible, but he’d also have may be stopped the world turning into literal hell. The situation is pretty damn desperate.

      • Vaira

Cory is a target and only that. He would be a burden. TYP would have to fight Laampy and protect Cory at the same time. Oh look, free human shield!
Basic rule for demon fighting, fire fighting, rescuing drowning people and every other helping – don’t add yourself to to-be-rescued pile. One incompetent person trying to rescue drowning person means two drowning people for actual life guards to save.

  • Aw~ He’s so worried about Mitch. I hope that after all this is over, they can actually be together. :3

  • Jason Moon

Made me think of this from “Ghostbusters II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX-QljN7KqQ That, or the red skies from CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS(You know, when DC destroying it’s universe was UNPRECEDENTED rather than done every decade or so)

  • Curt Clark

There are ways he can help that don’t involve fighting. As long as he keeps a cool head, he could be seriously good for rescue and damage control. And Lady Alfred seems wonderful at keeping a cool head.

  • Pikinanou

Well… he could go, sneak behind the fight and crush the stargate, when the gang push big daddy back home 🙂

  • Snorlaxation

That’s adorable. But really, buddy? The only way you’ll help is by distracting the big red naked devil for like .667 seconds.

  • John

I’ve got a bad feeling abou this

  • JepMZ

    Happy birthday to me!

Not so much to that universe

    • Juliette Leroux

      Hey happy birthday!

    • Happy b-day.

    • Happy Birthday!

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Happy birthday.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Happy belated birthday!

  • D. G.

I guess by it being an emergency it would be good for Cory to help. I just hope he doesn’t faint or run upon seeing Laampros. He is young. And untrained for battle.

    • timemonkey

I doubt he’ll actually get involved. Remember, this story wasn’t supposed to be part of the plot. If he was going to be a big deal he would have been brought up outside the side stories.

  • Connor

    Cory to the rescue!

Sure, he may be untrained and dangerous, but I reckon a giant storm is what we need right now. It’s not like our favorite supervillains were dumb enough to try opening a hell-gate in the middle of an urban area.

  • davefragments

    page 5 tonight!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Hi everybody! I’m going to go to bed early tonight so I probably won’t make it to the new page going up, but I wanted to drop by and say hello before that. 🙂

    • hey stick! sweet dreams!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you, Doki love!

    • davefragments

      Have a good night

  • davefragments

OK Guessing game for double chocolate brownies with dark chocolate gelato as reward:
“The Avon Lady has just driven up to the large mansion on top the hill”
    Can you guess the movie?

    • Edward Scissorhands?

      • davefragments

        You’re too good.
You win the double chocolate brownies with dark chocolate gelato

        • Pietro7

To the quick Doki go the brownies. 🙂

        • You could try another one. ^_^

  • I wonder if Brigit has powers of her own, other than just being a badass.

    • Saxon_Brenton

While it’s possible, I would guess no, on the basis that it would be gilding the lily.

    • davefragments

It would be an interesting twist and a surprise for Cory.

  • davefragments

Dokidokibaka wants me to play another movie game. So OK.
“A thief is kidnapped and forced to imitate a warlord”

There is another double chocolate brownie with dark chocolate gelato…

    • Crap. Doki feels like she should know this but cannot think of the title.

      • davefragments

        This movie is tough.

    • davefragments

      First hint: It’s subtitled.

      • Doki still feels like she should know it and is getting frustrated with herself.

    • davefragments

      OK – second hint:
When a powerful warlord in the Sengoku Period of Japanese history dies, a poor thief recruited to impersonate him finds difficulty living up to his role and clashes with the spirit of the warlord during turbulent times in the kingdom. It ends (in heartbreaking fashion) with the climactic Battle of Nagashino in 1575.
      That’s a big hint.

      • Doki is increasingly frustrated as it continues to elude her and is resisting trying to look it up. -_-

        • davefragments

I personally like RAN which is a retelling of King Lear. I would have watched it tonight but it has subtitles and I can’t camp and keep reading subtitles.

      • I think there was a Japanese movie on a ‘classic foreign movie night’ here recently that had a theme sounding like this. Didn’t watch it, but read the description. Kaga..something.

        Is that it?

        • davefragments

Akira Kurasowa’s KAGEMUSHA which translates (more or less) into The Shadow Warrior.
And yes. The first time I saw it, I just sat staring at the TV for a few minutes because the ending was so emotionally devastating. No one makes films like Kurosawa.
And you win the second double chocolate brownie with dark chocolate gelato.

          • Yay! Haven’t seen it. It was on late tv with Seven Samurais which I haven’t seen either. Too late to for me that day.

          • davefragments

opps, I commented on the wrong post — see below

  • Hello!

In for camp while watching the 1st episode of the mini-series, London Spy. It has one of the best and sexiest gay sexscenes I’ve seen in any series/movie xD

    • davefragments

      Hello there!

      • Hiya.

        • davefragments

I’m going to look for that series on my cable.

          • I’ve only seen first episode, and looks really interesting. It’s a spy/crime series where the (gay) main character tries to find out what happened to his bf.

          • davefragments

I’ve got roughly 17 days to avoid watching politics. After the movie is finished I’ll search for it.

  • Adam Black
