The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Truth or Dare—Page 7

305 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Truth or Dare—Page 7

Hmm. Looks like the Truth is getting a bit more truthy…

I’m at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this weekend and due to some exceptional circumstances, I will have some advance copies of The Young Protectors Volume One for sale. This Con takes place in the Toronto Reference Library this Saturday and Sunday and is completely free to attend. I’ll be on the second floor at table 222 with Steve MacIsaac. It’d be great to see some friendly faces, so if you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by! 🙂

Also, thanks to a misbehaving plugin, the site was down for several hours on Wednesday night before I had to jump on my plane to Canada at 4:00 A.M. in the morning. That was no fun. What was fun was discovering this NSFW review of The Young Protectors written by a brand new reader, just discovering us. And then there were a bunch of awesome reactions to the review, like this reader, who is just so angry. And FWIW, I never spend more than 5 minutes on social media, but just today I seriously spent like an hour of time I didn’t have following all these threads on Tumblr and Twitter, just cracking up. So in  my own way, I’m having a parallel experience to what these new readers experienced.

Last Friday, I added two new Milestone Goals to my Patreon Page, featuring a brand new Full Monty painting of Tsunami by artist Marccus!

AMW_Comics_TYP-ETE-PATREON-Tsunami-Marccus-Pinup-Headshot_800

If we hit $8000/month, $5+/month Patrons will get to download a wallpaper revealing his whole body in all its muscular, tattooed Full Monty glory and if we hit $8250/month, I’ll post up a link to another wallpaper which adds a beautiful background to show the context of why the big guy is naked (and, trust me, it really is quite pretty and adds a lot to the painting.) And if we hit those Milestone Goals, $10+ Patrons will get sent high-res versions of both images once their payments are processed at the end of the month.

Marccus has done a beautiful job rendering our grumpy, but oh so sexy water bender. You definitely won’t want to miss it!

Also, when the Patrons hit $7500/month in Patreon support, they unlocked a sexy, new wallpaper pin-up — a World Spanning Wallpaper! Using the first voting link I sent, they were able to choose the first half of a sexy pairing from the major (and a few of the minor) characters from any of my comics and they chose Kyle, the hero of The Young Protectors!

Now the vote for the second half of the pairing is underway and it’s a battle to the death between Deacon with 118 votes and Spooky Jones with 116 votes (just two votes apart!). Who will Kyle be paired with? I don’t know, but Patrons are now also getting to vote on how explicit they want the pairing to be, with “Full Monty” level currently winning with over 80% of the vote!

Want to help determine who Kyle gets all Fully Monty with (and get to enjoy the results)? Voting is open until Friday, May 8th at 11:45 PM PST and new Patrons get to vote! 🙂

If you become a Patron now and choose to receive the Special Digital Rewards, you will be able to download wallpaper versions of the Full Monty Annihilator Pin-Ups, the Full Monty Spooky Romance Card Pin-Up as well the Sexy Height Chart which shows the male members of the team. You’ll also be able enjoy all the other rewards so far posted, including the “How Spooky Got His Cap” and “What Is It Like To Kiss Spooky?” short stories that folks have liked so much. This is in addition to special back-stage access to script pages, thumbnail pages and penciled pages for all new updates. And, of course, Patrons who chose to get the Special Digital Rewards (which is the vast majority) continue to receive Digital Kickstarter Rewards every Wednesday and get to see special Sneak Previews on Sunday.

Over 1050 of you have already become Patrons in the last few months. There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron, and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits!),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron. 🙂

So! Commander starts to open up about a little ancient history. And Fluke gets a little surprise. What will we find out about what happened between Amanda and the Spookster? And what will this mean for all the Spooky/Kyle, Spooky/Flyboy, Spooky/Fluke, Spooky/Anaado, and Spooky/Tsunami shippers?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 🙂

  • Fluke was the only one out of the loop?

    • And I had the page all to myself for six minutes! O.O

      • davefragments

I saw that. Good catch on the page.

      • Danny

Impressive! And pretty unbelievable; usually the sharks are circling whenever a new page is due.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Congratulations!!

        • It was getting really odd. Like REALLY odd. Then I posted a link on the previous page and it was STILL about a minute before someone showed up.

          • stickfigurefairytales

The campsite got flooded with molasses and slowed everybody down!

      • Chris Dangerfield

Did it echo in it’s emptiness? Congrats! 🙂

  • davefragments

oh good heavens — they’ve been intimate! before!
    WHAT!

    • Michael

She didn’t say intimate, she said romantic.

As an asexual, this distinction is more important to me than most people might realise.

      • Intimate can mean more than just physically.

        • Michael

That’s true, but when it is conflated with romantic, it usually means in a physical sense. Romance and physicality are closely entwined in mainstream thought, so when the two are used interchangeably, it’s usually meant in a sexual sense. Non-romantic intimacy is not synonymous with sexual romance, so why should non-sexual romance be synonymous with sexual intimacy?

      • davefragments

oops. I was starting a movie on the DVD player and the disc was being recalcitrant so I typed the first word that came to mind.

  • Danny

Wow Paul, you’re a bit oblivious, aren’t you?

EDIT: Though maybe he’s reacting to the idea of Commander as a lady who has relationships and not just as his team leader…

    • Tyler Griffin

“WHAT! No. YOU can’t do THAT! You’re the ADULT!”

  • D’oh! Really Paul?

    • Keneu

He was almost falling asleep in the second pannel, but on the fifth it looks like he is about to fall backwards off the sofa from the shock. xDD

  • stickfigurefairytales

I would definitely be Paul in this situation. I am not very observant.

    • Klaus

I might miss the clues, but I would not be shocked to learn that I missed them.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Do we think Paul had thoughts of the Commander? Klaus is right in the sense that it’s a big reaction if he’d NEVER thought about her ‘in that way.’ This feels like him suddenly (rightly or wrongly) coming to the realization that, that fantasy door is firmly shut. (heck it’s easy to get lost in the sauce at 17).

        • Klaus

I just realised: maybe he reacts not to the news that Amanda and Spooky have a history, but to all the others knowing of it. Wait, was I the only one who didn’t see this?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, that wasn’t how I read it – I thought he was just reacting to the news about Amanda and Spooky having been romantically involved. I guess it’s a little hard to tell since we can’t see who Paul is looking at when he’s reacting.

          • Klaus

That may well be so. Or it could be both.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Commander is being all sensible and adult and responsible, and not at all trying to push back some of that teasing that Spooky has been peddling. This means that most of the guesses that the rest of us made were way off base.

    • Chris Dangerfield

(yep… good thing I’m so used to being way off base… lol)

  • A little more excitement there Tsu. Just a pinch.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Gordon does not have a single fuck to give.

      • Apparently not. Wonder if a cattle prod would get a reaction. 😛

        • davefragments

          He’s a slave to duty.

(I almost hate to say that line because it is so laden with hidden and provocative meanings from another story. However, Tsunami only cares about the missions and thinks all this humorous stuff is beneath his dignity. Well, that might be too harsh but it’s my thoughts tonight.)

          • I would well believe that. Of course which makes me grumble about his being a killjoy

          • davefragments

The unfortunate thing is that the last “slave of duty” I really knew was Frederick in the Pirates of Penzance and Frederick is a little bit of a dodo and (what shall I say) un-clever.

          • Sigh. Tsunami needs to get out more.

          • DC

It’s kinda sad seeing him forever serious/grumpy/sad. He needs more of whatever is making him smile in Marcus’ beautiful rendition of him.

          • Need to find out if he’s staring at an ice cream sundae. That’s probably it. It’s a guilty pleasure for him. Shhh. I’m sure he’ll deny it terribly if it’s ever said to him.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            With those abs, though?

          • And why he would deny it! He does extra crunches when no one is looking. 🙂

          • davefragments

And he’s a teenager and they tend to have abs and eat and eat and eat their families out of house and home.

          • Yup!! Probably can eat two or three without worry.

          • Chris Dangerfield

What? Families or houses and homes?

          • Sundaes

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That’s a fair point.

          • Klaus

            Tsunami is not a teenager.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Don’t we all?

          • What are these crunches you speak of unless you speak of cookies or chips or other edible things that I can nom

          • Chris Dangerfield

Those abs are for eating off of. They aren’t for everyday… those are the “good company abs.”

          • Tyler Griffin

Cazwells’s “Ice Cream Truck” starts playing.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Well said.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            HA!

          • Tyler Griffin

I get the same reading from Gordon, maybe I’m just jaded from living surrounded by ignorant homophobes, but his general demeanor strikes me as putting him is a certain percentile group of the SAT’s…

          • davefragments

I don/t get any homophobic feelings from Gordon but I do get the egotistic “I went to Harvard, you insignificant twerp.” I’m not sure if it is brains or experience driven.

          • Chris Dangerfield

Sad though. There is almost always a reason when people live like that. It would be just like Alex to through us the curve of a character struggling with honest depression. I suspect Gordon would get a lot TLC from some of this group if he was struggling that way. I don’t, but I have some family that do and it’s brutal…….

            (sorry… I kinda squirreled off there… haven’t a clue.)

        • Chris Dangerfield

          Hey everyone has their kicks…

      • Chris Dangerfield

Nary a small fucketh doth Gordon have… awwwww…

  • stickfigurefairytales

Wait, who’s Anaado? (in Alex’s comments)

    • Demon boy

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Ah, thank you!

      • Michael

        Correction: CUTE demon boy.

        • Indeed!

        • Chris Dangerfield

Corrected correction: VERY CUTE demon boy! 🙂

    • Keneu

I think it’s the demon boy he was protecting, when he remembers his stay in hell in the interlude comic. It looks like he appears in one of Alex’s patreon stories about Spooky.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Gotcha! Thank you! For a minute I thought Alex might have just been making someone up to mess with us.

        • Keneu

It was quite confusing for me too the first time I read his name on the comments. Alex can be tricksy but he’s not a troll, though that new tumblr reader and reviewer may think otherwise.

        • davefragments

I completely read it as Amanda until you pointed it out.

        • Tyler Griffin

Yeah, those of us who have read the tory are suddenly finding ourselves DISCUSSING and REFERENCING it, and cringing over it, because not every one is privy, and it feels kind of rude. Apologies.

          • stickfigurefairytales

In my case, I actually have read the story and just managed to forget his name. But this is indeed a very good point.

  • mogoskier

Poor Paul, he so out of the loop that he didn’t even know there was a circle.
    Also; CALL IT!

  • Look at how chill and awesome Mitch is being. Just look at his absolute adorableness. DO IT!

  • TwilightDreamer

Man the way she can stay so cool about it all…so awesome

  • Greg Skudlarek

Poor Spooky must be pretty cold right now. Is he not comfortable touching Kyle while his romantic past is being discussed, or something?

    • Klaus

Now would be a good time to put his hand on the nape of the neck of Amanda.

    • Saxon_Brenton

You know… I’ve just gone back and re-read the second Spooky text story, to formulate a response to another comment, and a minor point that just jumped out at me was Commander’s observation, “Sometimes, after a big fight, he wouldn’t feel cold for a couple of hours.” (YP:Sp2:Demons p.4)

This makes me wonder if his ostentatious show of being all touchy with Kyle on the previous pages was a deliberate attempt to set up a deflection question for Kyle’s benefit.

  • Hey, bisexual is TOTALLY a thing 😉 We shouldn’t be invisible! Show us off, Spooky! (of course, so is in the closet dating, but ONE CAN HOPE)

  • Phyre Storm

Well, crapcakes. That means she’s going to say she thinks about someone else now.

  • Is it just me or does Gordon look really sad in Panel 4?

    • Keneu

I thought so too, but it could also be indifference.

    • Jeldenil

Yeah, I totally see it that way too. Dissapointment, pouty lip, the works.

  • Precious

*Crack* You hear that? *CRACK* That’s the sound of my heart breaking into pieces T~T Maybe there’s still a chance! T^T -Keeps my fingers crossed-

  • Are those boxer briefs Spooky’s wearing or is Mitch getting himself a pretty view? 😛

    • I always thought they were boxers. Mitch and his eagle eyes ^_^

      • Ha! That’s what I was thinking. Lucky Mitch. 😀

    • Hahaha.. that thought can now not be unseen in my mind 😉

    • Tyler Griffin

Window’s of Opportunity are always the best.

  • Sargon

    hah! I knew it!

  • Fabulous Alien

I love how Commander is being all sensible, adult, business-like; Mitch and Kyle are “yeah, sure, what else is new”; Gordon couldn’t look more bored if he tried; Paul is shocked, almost indignant that he didn’t know… Intriguing that the only one whose face we can’t see is Spooky.

Wait, I have a theory. Did Spooky ask her this question because he knows she thinks of him? That would make her answer a question with the truth and would be something she would not like to discuss with the rest of the team. But imagine if she had sexual thoughts about someone else, like Paul (he would brag all night and maybe throw some cheesy pick-up lines that would make everyone else cringe), or Kyle (ridiculous blush-fest and the possibility of torching the entire place). I’m not even including Mitch (out of the question) or Gordon (maybe that would change his facial expression). So maybe Spooky is going easy on her making her say something she doesn’t want to discuss, but that (most of) the team already imagines.

    • Sarah314159

Ah, but is this going to be the only revelation? Or is she just starting with the one that’s easiest to admit? Spending as much time as she does with team members who are all as good-looking as these guys are, surely she has at least a few sexual thoughts about more than just one of them… Maybe even all of them!

  • Connor

Paul is completely channeling me on this page.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      HA!

  • Jen Roberts

O___O did… did my ship just become canon?

  • Aza

worlds of meaning in body language! Kyle is closed-up, spooky is entirely relaxed, the commander is more distanced, business-like, mitch is faking bravado, tsunami with folded arms… ohmy. Kyle is probably afraid someone will ask HIM about sexuality. poor baby!

  • fujoshifanatic

A few observations right off the bat:

    1. Amanda is one cool cucumber to be able to talk about this stuff without so much as a hint of a blush, compared to Kyle’s rosy display of embarrassment. That’s why she is in charge for sure.
    2. Aww. That means we won’t find out about Gordon’s, Paul’s or Mitch’s sexual secrets in this interlude, unless someone decides to disobey an order…
    3. I see the verb tenses that Alex is making Amanda use here, and I don’t want to believe it. Please don’t tell me you’re torpedoing my Spooky/Amanda ship by making it have happened in the past and now be over; I don’t think my heart can take it! Please let it be at least safely on a shelf somewhere to be picked up again in the future. Please?
    4. Paul? Really? I’m surprised you were able to get any at all in summer camp, based on how clueless you are in observing people’s social cues. But my guess is that little girl threw it straight at your head so you wouldn’t miss it, and you’ve just gone along with that M.O. ever since. Maybe that’s part of your bad luck, not to have developed good observational skills? That may help you with your heroics, but your social life would have really sucked were it not for your good looks and, er, other attributes I’m not supposed to notice until you’re of age. 🙂

As for those reviews, I would consider them an awesome compliment, Alex. While they didn’t indicate their sexual orientation, those reviews read like they were written by a couple of straight “bros” whose dicks you’ve turned inside out with your awesome storytelling skills, and they don’t know whether to walk it off in shame or ride it out to its inevitably satisfying conclusion. If so, that’s quite a feat on your part, and even more of a feat that they admitted it, even if it’s under the anonymity of the internet. Bros nowadays may be willing to cop to their homoerotic tendencies, but not without framing it in the most asinine way possible. But if you read between the puerile lines, they gave you props, so take it (as you rightly did) for what it’s worth. 🙂

    • Jen Roberts

Here’s what I’m thinking: Spooky & Amanda were a thing and then she formed the team. She’s the Commander, she’s in charge, and being a military brat, she knows the rules against fraternization. So she and Spooky “broke up” because, y’know, it’d look bad for the leader to be snogging one of her subordinates.

But there’s still that bond between them, that connection that says they want to be together and can’t/shouldn’t. Remember that sort of smirk they shared with one another back during the “hey we found fanporn of ourselves” bit? Totally still feelings there, but they’re pulling an O’Neill/Carter (from SG-1) thing.

At least, that’s what I want to believe.

      • fujoshifanatic

Sadly, that looks like the case here, which means that it will take FOREVER for them to finally be happy, if at all. And these two (besides poor Kyle of course) really need some happiness. And snogging. And other stuff–you know, to keep Spooky warm. 😛

        • Jen Roberts

Everyone in this group needs lots of happiness. THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY COOKIES IN THE WORLD ;___; it’s a tragedy.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Unlimited AU oreos for all!!!!!!

          • Tyler Griffin

I’m no good at baking cookies, but I do offer delicious Heath Bar Candy Cake, which is ALMOST as good as Fairy Godmother’s “Happily Ever After”™

      • Chris Dangerfield

Honestly I have no idea because Spooky has “Gender Fluid” Tattoo’d on his forehead. But poor Kyle NEEEDS him. Amanda will be fine. LOL. (chris looks around but it looks like no one is buying it.)

        • Jen Roberts

          *coughthreesomecough*

          • Chris Dangerfield

            *coughloveitcough*

        • fujoshifanatic

LOL, not gonna lie, that would be a nice consolation prize (just imagining funny and sexy that pairing would be makes me feel warm and giggly), but it doesn’t compete with my OTP ship. Sorry Chris!

          • Chris Dangerfield

Ah well… honestly I’m shite at predicting any of this… Spooky is just the only one in this group that I can picture Kyle fitting with. I know people do the Mitch thing, but I think Kyle needs a little strong support, it’s been a rough life. Spooky needs some unstinting emotional love and affection. I have no idea why, but I don’t see Amanda as the sharing type… but that really is guessing. Based on the back stories, she really brought Spooky back to the land of the living by helping him overcome hell. But they are all so young that I can’t say for a minute that in five years she and spooky’s stars might line up perfectly.

ARG… I have no idea. I just know if it aint Spooky I don’t see Kyle solving this life issue in this book

Not saying it won’t happen, I’m just clueless and being a giant marshmallow, I want Kyle hugged and loved… oh and seriously snogged. lol

          • fujoshifanatic

I can totally see where you’re coming from, especially with what Spooky and Kyle could be, but my guess is that while Spooky could be good for Kyle, I’m not sure Kyle could be the same for Spooky, especially at this point in Kyle’s coming-to-terms process. Kyle still has much guilt over what’s happened thus far, and on top of the shame he feels for being gay and sleeping with Anni, he now has to deal with the shame of being half demon, part of the very tribe that made Spooky’s life a literal hell for a whole year. I can’t see how that would not fuel a negative-feedback loop in any relationship they tried, and throwing the memory (?) of Anaado in the mix, that would get very messy indeed. Amanda doesn’t strike me as the possessive type at all–she just wants Spooky to be happy and whole–but I don’t think she would endorse or condone those two getting together. If she and Spooky couldn’t handle being together and part of TYP, what chance would Kyle have, who is way more emotionally fragile than either of them? Yeah, to me, for reasons I mentioned a long time ago, I think Mitch would be much more Kyle’s speed at this point in his life; he is sweet, earnest, and loyal to Kyle in a non-threatening way that he very much needs right now. If they can figure out a way to fire-proof Mitch and/or teach Kyle some tantric sex moves, maybe they can help each other in really fun and meaningful ways, especially with confidence-building. Too bad we won’t get to see any of it for a couple of years, but I would still christen that ship for a safe and long journey. 🙂

          • Klaus

Anaado need not come up. Kyle does not read minds. But otherwise I agree with you.

          • Tyler Griffin

I don’t think we ever got a full clarification if Anaado’s previous involvement was just Amanda’s power’s giving her the the inside view of SPooky’s head, or if there was something “else” going on, if he makes an appearance every time Spooky is genuinely emotionally involved, then it could become important.

This is weird. We are having a discussion that requires constant references to a bit of canon that not everyone has had the chance or means to see… It’s giving me “Spoilahs” (read that in River Song’s accent) guilt.

          • Klaus

Why do you rule our Mitch being a strong support? He has shown great strength so far.

          • Chris Dangerfield

I don’t know really. I promise you, it’s not a slight against Mitch, who is clearly a very mature 15 year old… 15 year old… 15 year old… There’s so much growing ANYONE (no matter how mature) does between 15 and 18 (25 in the real world, but I’ll relax) So, by the time he’s even 18 (just in terms of life experience.. Kyle has gone another three years and is 21?

Well, I guess I’m just making the point that I don’t know, but I didn’t really think that the two youngest (in life experience levels) gay white guys necessarily would be the best personality matches.

But, again, to answer your question. No slight at all re Mitch. You are correct. He’s been very mature. Just to add, we haven’t been told if he’s been tested by life yet. Spooky with Hell, Kyle with out of control powers, etc… so I don’t know what Mitch has to go through on the old adversity trail. I have a gut feeling that Alex has a Mitch Book in his vault for ‘someday’. (HOPE). 🙂

          • Michael

I disagree, I think Kyle will get a world of benefit from being the older one in the relationship. My experience of being a senior instructor (of martial arts) is that I always learn more and progress more personally and in my own training when I am instructing someone else. I think having that responsibility, and having someone look up to him like that, would really help him.

      • Kate G

I will say that while “fraternization” is STRONGLY frowned upon, it does depend on where you are fraternizing. Within your own company? Ya, that’s bad (as in too many strikes and you will be dishonorably discharged.) Outside your own company? Bad, but you might get off a little easier.

A good example of this fraternization in different companies? My parents. My dad was a paratrooper and my mom was in boot camp for something I can’t remember the proper name for (it’s basically secretarial work; they used to write the telegrams for those that died in combat before they phased those out recently. It was the 80s.) My mom got in trouble by my dad’s upper command but couldn’t get in trouble because she saw him off hours off base. She used to take great delight in it.

      • Saxon_Brenton

I vaguely recalled that the second Spooky text story ended with a statement about Commander making the vow not to kiss Spooky again, but breaking it several times. I’ve just re-read it again, because it’s got a lot of good stuff on Commander’s characterization and motives. (And now I’m getting leery of such an in-depth discussion of source material that not everyone has got or can get for financial reason – but nevertheless it is the relevant primary source material we have at the moment)

So anyway, briefly and with probable spoilers: Amanda is an extremely self-controlled individual, who likes Spooky as a friend. If nothing else they understand each other in ways that only people who have had life-threatening adventures together can, and they have fun hanging out. And in that story Amanda notices that in the two years that have passed since Spooky came back from hell that’s grown into a good looking young man. They kiss, which escalates as their powers synergise. But despite it being the best experience that Amanda has ever had with any of her lovers, the (perhaps literal) ghost of Anaado the demon boy intrudes. (And not in the way that it usually means when that phrase gets used: it was a rather sweet but weird threesome.) Spooky still isn’t ready to talk about his year in hell, and Amanda knows that if they get romantically involved she’ll have to know who Anaado is and what he means to Spooky. And with all that in mind, Amanda vows to keep their friendship strictly platonic, “To keep him safe from the demons of his past.” [end plot summary]

Now from all that, I’m wondering: Is that admission in YPLSp2:Demons that Amanda and Spooky kissed several times the same as them having sex more than once? Is it the same as them actually dating? The phrasing that Amanda uses in he page above is somewhat ambiguous: “Spooky and I have some history.” , “Spooky and I have been together before. As romantic partners.” It implies a long term relationship, but doesn’t actually confirm anything. (And remember, Alex is tricky.)

All of which doesn’t actually negate your speculations, Jen, As we get closer to the present, and the formation of Young Protectors team becomes imminent, the fraternisation angle could very well have become a factor on top of already existing reasons. Or maybe Amanda and Spooky managed to get together despite the reservations that Amanda held in YP:Sp2:Demons, and then split up later when new ones (the fraternisation thing) developed. How ironic if that were the case.

        • Klaus

The story says that she would break the promise more than once. I take this to mean that she slipped up several times, but each time renewed her resolve.

        • kamishiro

Thank you for your insight! It really makes me wonder. Alex sure has in mind everyone’s characters development. I’m always surprised by his storytelling.

I just hope my ship survives :’)

      • kamishiro

I just had a theory, a rather romantic one. I remember some pages ago ( WAAAY AGO ) saying abt Spooky and how some other adult teams also wanted him in their group. If he did he would be on the galactic issue and others faraway missions. And thus less time with good old pal Amanda. But he decided to join Amanda’s team. Even if meant they would be in a less romantic relationship.
Break up to be together. Isn’t it romantic? I knooow, i’m such dreamer but i’m a sucker for romance :PPP

        • kamishiro

and geeez, re-reading some pages ago really makes me crave more of flyboy, he is soo sweet <3

    • Chris Dangerfield

OMG… what a fun summation. Coolness thanks. As usual you made me laugh out loud with, paul: “But my guess is that little girl threw it straight at your head so you wouldn’t miss it…” HA! Maybe that’s the place his good luck helps him out. (Oh who am I kidding, I’ll never figure out how Paul’s schtick works.)

    • A nice analysis of the page, fujoshifanatic!

(And I don’t know anything about who the reviewers are in regular life. But I do know their reactions to my comic made my whole day. 😀 )

    • Tyler Griffin

Based on some Patreon award canon extra bits, my assumption is that Amanda and Spooky are officially “off” by mutual consent for several very logical and adult reasons that would prevent a relationship from being healthy, although there was definitely room left in those bits that both would be interested in exploring the option if the situation changed. Hope that makes you feel better 😀

  • Chris Dangerfield

G’nite all. Must sleep before typing something to long and silly. So I’ll see you after coffee. Sleep well. (And Alex if you party all night in Toronto don’t take your hang-over out on us… remember hydrate, hydrate, hydrate). 😀

    • fujoshifanatic

      Good night Chris!

    • Night!

    • Goodnight, sir!

    • Tyler Griffin

Long and silly is fun though, give it us deep so we can giggle.

  • Jeldenil

I’m seriously amused that after the curse has been succesfully deflected, Paul will be totally clueless again.

  • Klaus

The review refered to by Alex brought back a thought I have had several times: the end of chapter 2 would be so much better as a volume break than the end of chapter one. People buying the book at the con, or later, may well get the imopression that this is a romantic feel good story. Or, what had not occured to me before, just such a yaoi story as the reviewer expected. Let us hope that the bonus comic convinces readers that there is more dept to it than that.

    • I’ve had similar concerns, Klaus. Let’s hope. 🙂

  • Will Parkinson

I’m just getting more and more confused.

    • Klaus

      What about?

      • Michael

Give him a break, he’s obviously doomed to degenerative nerve disease.

Cheer up, buddy. Chances are you only Might Parkinson, anyway. Nothing’s set in stone 🙂

        • Archidel

Ok, speaking as someone who has two family members with Parkinson’s disease; not funny.

          • Michael

Agreed on second thought. Comment deleted and sincere apologies.

          • Archidel

            Appreciated.

    • As Claus asked, about what? Maybe we can help.
Did you read the written text about the scene set-up for this in the page notes under the Title page and page 1 of this little interlude?

This takes place before current events in the comic, but answers are canon. We’re getting some private information about the team members, based on questions readers asked a while ago.

      Do you mean about Spooky?

      • Will Parkinson

Pretty much the whole thing. I felt like I skipped something along the line. I’ll catch up eventually, I’m sure.

        • Did you read Alex’ set-up for the story as suggested? Much of the info we’re getting now have been speculated about a lot in the comments previously, but some of it we’re getting answered her 🙂
If you read the set-up then just go with getting extra info about them and their individul friendships that we didn’t know before. It’s basically additions to hints we’ve gotten about them earlier.

          • Will Parkinson

I did not. I get notification in my mail about the update, come and read it quickly, but seldom do I have a chance to read the commentary.

          • I guess reading Alex’ page comment on the ToD title page (or page 1) will help your confussion then.

          • Will Parkinson

Thank you for letting me know. 🙂 I appreciate your time (as well as the time of others who sought to un-confuse me.)

  • bronakopdin

for being the most bashful one about snickering Fluke really seems to be oblivious in THAT department, eh? XD
only going to think up and tease possible gayness but overlooking more obvious stuff ^^ sweet in a way 😀

as Amanda is paying attention to say “before the team was formed” (which actually should be obvious since everyone would KNOW about it if they still were dating WHILE the team was formed) I wonder if the FORMING of the team has to do with the break-up?
like this “no workplace relationship” thing? I do know people that just can’t have that! A friends mother who was divorced from her father and met her current husband at her previous school really changed schools just because of that so she can remarry, it was just her “can’t have this” opinion, the school would have been cool about it…
nah that’s probably too less a reason here but maybe a small point from a list?
    we’ll see…
as long as it wasn’t another dare… xD

  • Oh, Paul… 🙂

This is one of the pages that reminds me just how very young most of them actually are,. and Paul’s reaction is what does it about Paul.

Some interesting body language on display there, and the one that really strikes me is the overhead camera shot. Spooky’s the only one with his feet on the table. He’s also the only one just leaning back, completely open and relaxed. The others all have a slight postural barrier; except for Tsunami, where there’s no “slight” about it. 🙂

    • John

I think Kyle is giving him a run for his money though. His language is all ‘don’t talk to me’

Which kinda makes sense given what we DO know about him. I just like how he progressively shut down as spooky was revealing how they snuggle in bed together.

  • Columbine

You know however this turns out via fan-theories I really appreciate the Commander. She’s had very little screen time really but (like Fluke and Spooky) her personality has really stood out in every scene. (Tsunami is more guarded and Flyboy is shyer). I know I’ve said it before but it’s esspecially nice to see such a well developed character in a yaoi comic, where the focus is never gonna be on her. Super-kudos for developing secondary cast all round.

  • Kyle might be the emotionally ‘youngest’ of the trio, Spooky, Fluke and Kyle, but Fluke is SO the most oblivious about some things xD

I don’t know if it can be contributed to Paul only being 16 here, but Mitch seems to have gotten that part of it and he’s only 14. Then again Mitch is new on the team, trying to be observant and fit it, and there has been signs of chemistry between Amanda and Spooky. Observing his new team member and having a really good hearing + sight, and Mitch may have an advantage there.

Too bad they can’t remember any of this in the morning, because Paul could have needed it *lol* No wonder he didn’t have any suspicion that Kyle is gay where (I think) Amanda and Spooky do.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Fluke’s comment about Red Hot being emotionally the youngest does seem ironic here, doesn’t it.? Well, let’s be ruthlessly fair, being emotionally mature doesn’t automatically mean being observant.

Still, it raises an interesting idea. If Kyle was keeping quiet about his orientation, then he had two basic ways of covering it: being boastful and pretending to be stereotypically macho as a cover, or the one he seems to have taken and be quiet and an observer in any discussion about dating (using his known problems with starting fires when aroused as an excuse to claim he had little to contribute to the discussion). The question is: how likely is that sort of attitude with dating/sex to carry over and affect the rest of Kyle’s emotional life? Or is it the case that Kyle is by nature ’emotionally the youngest’ of that group regardless of any other factors, and this made being the quiet one a natural fit with the rest of his backhistory?

      • Klaus

Has Kyle told the team why he lost control and burned down his family home? I find it unlikely. If he had, I think Spooky would have arranged for him to have a fireproof room to practise control in.

        • Saxon_Brenton

I think so. When Paul and Spooky are on the doorstep of the warehouse in chapter 3 and arguing over how to handle Kyle’s predicament, Paul says, “And with what happened to him when he was twelve…?” Broad context of the page reads to me as them knowing.
[Edit:] And yes, that does raise even more interesting questions about what Spooky has or has not done to help Kyle with the problem.

          • Klaus

They know that at 12 he discovered his powers, where unable to control them and burned down his family home. But do they know what triggered this?

          • rgleon9986

Didn’t that comment happen in the discussion shortly following Kyle’s assault by the Annihilator? It seems to me that if they brought it up in that situation, which they knew was sexual in nature, then they also knew that the “thing that happened when he was 12” was also sexual in nature. If they know that much, then they probably know all of it.

          • Klaus

It did, but don’t think this necessarily means that his teammates know.

He feels guilty because of destroying the house that was his home and harming his family. Now he has destroyed the world that is his home, and harmed humanity. I find the similarity quite sufficient without including the sex part.

On the other hand, the connection with sex is another similarity, and this cannot but strengthen his fear of sex.

          • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. I hadn’t thought of it that way, but that’s a good interpretation. And given your original point about wondering why Spooky hadn’t helped him with fireproofing, it may be the best one from the point of view of simplicity of explanation.

          • Connor

Another explanation as to why Spooky didn’t do any fireproofing to help would be that he simply couldn’t. I seem to remember Kyle’s hellfire burning even the Annihilator when he got angry.

          • Tyler Griffin

It would still be a very klunky and awkward fit for the conversation unless they already knew.

          • Tyler Griffin

The comment Saxon referenced would be out of place if they didn’t. I mean accidentally burning down your adopted family’s home is bad, but it wouldn’t qualify to make loosing your virginity to Anni “Basically the worst possible thing to happen” (quote may be paraphrased as it is “quoted” from memory)

          • Klaus

            Here is the conversation: http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3pt1-page-9/

They do not mention the Annihilator or Kyle’s virginity at all. Just the end of the world,.

          • Tyler Griffin

            Your point?

It also is not explicitly stated that he explained the end of the world bargain, but we all read it into it, again, because it doesn’t make sense without that context.

As I said, the comment is clunky and out of place, awkward even, without the sexual context. It just doesn’t make sense to me as a thing that would be said there without it. Burning his family’s house down was crappy, but not an unexpected result of the first manifestation of his particular powers, however having it happen with an orgasm IS.

          • Klaus

He is already burdened with guilt, and now he has another, similar, thing to be guilty about. That is context enough.

And again, if he had known, Spooky would have arranged for a way for Kyle to practise control.

      • Good questions. I think Kyle’s way of handling it is based on his personality combined with how he’s reacted to previous experiences/traumas. Same goes for Spooky btw. Previous life effects you, but how you move forward from that ‘shapes’ you.

I can’t remember how much I’ve talked about this before but I find it interesting to see how Spooky and Kyle have each their way of handling their traumas, because it’s what they both are doing. While they both keep things to themself, for one reason or another, they both have many similarities and yet they’re so different.
As someone who’s been heavily bullied a big part of my younger life, I’ve gone the ‘Kyle’ way about much of myself most of my life. Here I mean the silent introvert not emotionally young. At the same time I see a lot of Spooky in myself, and how his traumas have formed him. Makes me feel I can relate to both.
How Kyle will go on, forward and later, will be based on his life, his personality and his ‘growth’ emotionally.

In this comic we’re witnessing how Kyle evolve. When it’s over, I guess Kyle will be much stronger than when the comic started. It’s about his rise rise as a true superhero, but just as much as his emotional growth.

  • David Welbourn

Y’know, despite Commander’s edict against any further questions about sex, somehow I bet sex will return to the conversation regardless. Perfectly innocent questions like “How did you find out you had superpowers” or “Tell us something we don’t know about your recent trip to Montana” or “What’s in that encrypted computer file” could potentially have surprising answers.

    • Tyler Griffin

Plus, teen/early twenties guys, it always comes back ’round to sex.

  • Nate

I find Amanda’s choice of words interesting. She and Spooks have “been together” as “romantic partners”. She did NOT mention sex.

I wonder… could Spooky be asexual? He’s certainly affectionate (cuddling up with Kyle, etc) but I’m the same way, and I’m ace myself. Although if he and Amanda did have a relationship, he’s probably “biromantic” (I’m not… sorry ladies 😉 )

    • Omar Cantu

No, he certainly can be sexual attracted to Amanda.

    • Tyler Griffin

He is canonically very sexually active. Although that may have more to do with his experiences in Hell than with any actual sex drive.

      • Nate

Please note I hadn’t become a patron (yet) when I made that initial comment. It does seem that he isn’t ace, after all. 🙂

        Still cuddly, tho. 😉

        • Tyler Griffin

Well, my understanding is that the level of sexual activity is not automatically a measure of Asexuality, as there are a mulittude of reason to actually have sex. But I’m just a fairly standard gay, cis, white, male so I try to stay in my lane as much as possible. I do agree that the use of the words romantic vs affectionate vs sexual all have very different connotations and implications.

          • Omar Cantu

Well yes but he was at the very least aroused with Amanda so asexuality seems pretty far fetched. But who knows, he totally could be demisexual.

    • Sarah314159

I assumed Amanda was simply making the distinction that she and Spooky had had sex in the context of a relationship, rather than that they’d just banged.

  • A continuation of my comment just below.
I read the page again a couple of times, and while I still think the main reaction is from Paul being oblivious about them, some of his very susprised reaction could be due to him ‘zoning out’ a bit.

In panel 2 he looks thoughtful, not paying completely attention to what Amanda is saying. Maybe his mind is still focused on, and trying to process, what he’s just been told by Spooky and Kyle, and how he couldn’t have known this before now?
Has he been that oblivious to parts of his two best friends? Why didn’t he know?

Spooky just asked a question that Paul could almost expect the answer to (or not), but while Spooky and Amanda talk/banter, and Amanda lay down rules and lead (as she/they always does) then Paul is not paying full attention.
THEN Paul’s attention is snapped back to what’s being said, because here’s once again an answer he did not expect. Another surprise he has to process on top of the other.

I don’t think he’s completely oblivious about the closeness between Spooky and Amanda, and maybe the chemistry, but he didn’t know it had gone this far as it already has earlier. Now they got his attention and previous answers are (shortly?) forgotten.
Again, too bad none of them will remember this new knowledge in the morning. Especially Fluke could have some benefit from it xD

  • Pikinanou

Ooh, so she DO know what it’s like to kiss Sooky 😛 Lucky woman

  • jreed3842

Ahhh!! Another great page! Paul’s reaction made me laugh out loud!

  • Cheesethrower

Ok, this has been bothering me the past few pages. Spooky said that he needs to be touching somebodies skin to stay warm, but in none of these pages is he touching somebodies skin. However, he isn’t showing the remotest sign of being cold. It’s a minor detail but I just notice these things lol.

    • Michael

Alex said in a comment a page or two back that it’s not instantaneous, so he must still be warm from his contact with Kyle.

      • Cheesethrower

But that goes against what the characters themselves are actually saying. Mitch asked them on page 3 of this chapter if they have to spend the whole night touching skin to skin, which Kyle implies on the next page as true “Well he would get shivery if I don’t do that”. That leads the reader to believe that he has to be touching skin to skin the entire time to stay warm. Even though Alex clarified that in the comments page, the actual cannon in the comic is otherwise.

        • Tyler Griffin

Why do you get that from that? Mitch just stated that they would have to be touching skin to skin the way Kyle and Spooky described being in bed. To which Kyle responded that if he didn’t Spooky would get really shivery. There was no reference to a time frame or rate of shivery-ness

          • Cheesethrower

“But… you have to be touching him the whole night, right? Like, skin to skin”
“Well he would get shivery if I don’t do that”

Mitch asked him if they had to be touching the whole time and Kyle basically says “yes”. It’s pretty clearly written there. If Spooky only had to touch for a few minutes, then one of them would have said that, as the rules to the curse they’re under clearly states that they must be absolutely truthful.

Also, on page 2 of this chapter, Spooky himself stated “As long as I’m touching someones skin, I actually don’t feel cold at all”. Again, there is no “I just need to touch them for a few minutes” or “just until I warm up”, but a straight answer that he’s cold when he’s not wearing layers or touching someones skin.

As for how cold Spooky gets, he states on page 1 of this chapter that he “gets cold real easily” because his body is accustomed to hell. Since the traditional version of hell refers it to a place of intense heat, say thousands of degrees Fahrenheit, then that person would be INTENSELY cold on Earth.

            SCIENCE!

          • Tyler Griffin

But it doesn’t state or even imply that the change is immediate. It doesn’t say that as soon as contact is broken Spooky’s body fails homeostasis. It says that the contact must be maintained throughout the night in order for Spooky to remain comfortable throughout the night. But it doesn’t say that Spooky is gonna start teeth chattering the very same second skin contact is broken. I took it to mean that physical contact causes his body to maintain a comfortable tempreture, and that once contact is broken SPooky begins cooling down, ergo he would become uncomfortable rather quickly, but not necessarily show any outward signs of it for several minutes.

          • Cheesethrower

You gotta remember that they need to be “Absolutely truthful”. Spooky says “As long as I’m touching someones skin, I actually don’t feel cold at all”, if the case was that he only had to touch skin for a few moments to get warm, then his initial statement is a lie. It’s the specific word choice he’s using. “As long as”. That simple phrase is a clear identifier. Think of when you hear that in a sentence:
“As long as you’re here, it’s ok”
“You can go, as long as you bring me a soda”
“I’ll give you $20, as long as you mow the lawn”
“As long as I’m touching someones skin, I actually don’t feel cold at all”

That clearly implies that Spooky will get cold if he does not touch someones skin.

Now, even if the case was that he gets cold after several minutes, when you look at the concept of hell being thousands of degrees, and Earth being around 70 degrees, the two are so far apart that the exponential rate of cooling would be something like five degrees per second, which would make any normal person shivering within ten seconds.

          • Tyler Griffin

Dude, tldr. Also, let it go.

          • Cheesethrower

But it’s Saturday night and I’ve got nothing better to do than discuss the possible throretics of a minor detail in a superhero comic.

            Don’t leave me!

          • Michael

You’re one of THOSE kinds of nerds, aren’t you? The kind who calculates the minimum temperature of Superman’s laser vision as indicated by the temperatures required to cut through x material that the comic shows him cutting through?

            It’s

            a

            comic.

          • Cheesethrower

Lol no, I’m just bored tonight. :p

          • Michael

For the record, there is no upper limit to the temperature that Superman’s heat vision (not laser-based, but microwave-based, apparently) can heat things.

            http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/comic-books-graphic-novels/492652-how-hot-supermans-heat-vision.html

          • Klaus

            Hot enough to be cool.

          • Cheesethrower

I wish I didn’t know this. Though it does give me warm-gooey thoughts knowing that Superman can basically cause a persons molecules to vibrate at such a rate that it cooks them.

Though one could theorize that Superman could… NO, YOU’RE NOT TRICKING ME INTO NERDING OUT!

          • SofiaT

            Hi guys,
I think it’s better if this thread ends here.
No lines have been crossed and I realise you’re just bored Cheesethrower and want someone to goof around good-naturely with, but I get the feeling people are tired and not in much mood for debate tonight.

            Thanks!

          • It’s a comic with a lot of important attention to detail – and we’d be remiss if we didn’t comment on it 🙂

          • Apart from “superhero”, you’d love the forums at Misfile… so, SO much minor detail picking…

          • This is what I would think. He would “get shivery” after several minutes of no contact when cooling down.

        • Klaus

And they do. they have to touch every few minutes.

    • davefragments

Right now, Spooky is distracted by his question to Amanda and forcing her to embarrass herself.

      • Cheesethrower

I don’t know about you, but have you ever jumped from a hot-tub into the snow? There’s no getting distracted at that level of cold. :p

        • davefragments

That’s one thing I never did in the winter.
I think this interlude is all about Spooky embarrassing his teammates and enjoying it too much. I envy him for being able to get away with it.

  • Keys2tkingdom

    BOOOOOOOM!

Well. There’s a bombshell if there ever was one.

  • Kat Hedgecoth

I don’t think I’ve laughed as hard as I did at those reviews in a very long time. The first one insulted, then confused me, but by the end I was laughing so hard I started to tear up. Whoever wrote that is a genius! Thanks for sharing Alex and I love seeing how so many people are reacting to your work.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed those. It really was a lot of fun for me as well to discover. 🙂

  • Jason Moon

    *record scratch*
    yeahbuhWHAT?

  • Jason Moon

Was the Patreon page image above inspired by this page?

  • Tyler Griffin

@alexwoolfson:disqus Dude. You gotta start finding and sharing more reviews and comments like those. That was the best read I’ve had today, except for the two comic pages themselves, lol.

    • I’m glad you liked those. Also fun are reading the tags under the reblogs. Here are two examples. 🙂

      EXAMPLE 1:

Tagged: real talk, seriously this shit gets REALLY FUCKING INTENSE, also Spooky is the best fucking character and The Annihilator is a total GILF, and his title sounds like a lewd euphemism, nsfw -.

      EXAMPLE 2:

#the young protectors #nsfw text / #OH MY GOD I SAW ADS FOR THIS BUT I DIDNT READ IT BC I THOUGHT IT WAS CREEPY BUT ????SHIT #I JUST READ ALL OF IT AND I HAVE FALLEN

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Good things come for those who wait…..great page!….

  • Wildroses

Thanks for posting those reviews, they gave me a good laugh. I found it interesting they were surprised when the betrayal happened. I don’t think I was totally shocked. I certainly didn’t get the impression that the story was going to end with sex as some of them seemed to believe, and I’d felt Duncan perhaps had something he wasn’t telling Kyle or an ulterior motive because of that conversation he had with the Platinum Priestess before their date (I was still surprised by the extent of his betrayal though, I really thought he was starting to fall for Kyle and you could argue it turned out I was right). I think the problem was a lot of those readers had preconceptions about Yaoi I didn’t have. This is the only Yaoi thing I’ve ever read so I came in pretty fresh.

    • Klaus

This also shows that you can not count on readers reading Alex’ comments. I did not expect the story to end with a sex scene on chapter two. One reason was Alex’ announcement that this story is five chapters long.

      • Wildroses

I came into this story when it was partway through chapter three, and while I was going through the archives my thoughts on comments was: “What are they? Oh, those words you see if you scroll too far down when trying to click the next page button. Who’d want to delay seeing the next page by the thirty seconds it would take to read them?”

        • Klaus

Click on the comic to go to the next page. Or press the right arrow on your keyboard. Less scrolling.

          • Michael

Or, annoyingly, veer slightly to the right when scrolling down.

      • xLizardx

To be fair, most people who have been here from the start probably read the comments because we’re up to date, so every time we see the latest page, there isn’t another one to rush on to. If I were a new reader and binging it, I’d probably just plough straight on through, and then yell obscenities in frustration when I ran out and got to the end [so far]. 🙂

      • Artist notes under a page is a strange thing. A lot of people simply don’t *see* them, no matter how much is written – a couple lines or a longer part (like Alex who writes a small blog under each page).
The ‘not reading artists notes’ when you’ve just found a comic and binge read to catch up; that one is normal and I do that myself. We probably lose some info because of that, but you just want that next page. It’s when you have caught up that it’s starting to show how people read webcomics.

Many readers either don’t go below the page and/or scroll directly to the comments if they have any interest in those. Some people don’t even notice there’s comments below a comic they read, either beause they don’t go below the artist comment (that they often don’t read or if it’s long) or you have to click to open comments.

I see both options regularly on various comics, and both with long time readers or new-ish people who didnd’t take the time to check artist comments until after they’ve waited a few times on the next page to be uploaded.
Suddently they’ve found the comment section, and sometimes ask how long those have been there, or most often someone asks a question in the comments that is told directly in the page notes above (and they haven’t read).

With comments there’s those who just don’t have an interest or who in general almost avoid them like the plague, because comments often have a (sadly well deserved) reputation for being ‘toxic’ environments online.
With artist comments it can be a matter of ESL or dyslexic readers who can manage to read English well enough to read a page, but a block of text they’ll avoid, and they can handle a little text in the comments. I’ve seen ESL readers who like the art of a comic enough to sit and type each speech bubble into a translator, because they can’t read English, and do the same to make a small comment on the pages.

There’s those who just don’t want to bother with artist comments – why should they? – and then there’s that group who just don’t seem to see the artist comment.
I’ve personally tried to refer a reader to an artist note on an art piece a couple years ago, and that it was there came as a surprise to this person – who had scrolled past it and previous notes on other art pieces to get to the comments section for months. I can still remember being baffled how they could have missed it, because it was three paragraphs long and over a dozen lines.

        • Klaus

One thing that I expect will make some people skip the comment is large amounts of boilerplate. Such as Alex’ exhortations to look at Patreon.

    • xLizardx

I think a lot of regular readers here had also already been hooked on Artifice, and so were expecting [and have received!] great quality story-telling, as opposed to porn with a token plot.

I was trying to explain to my partner the other day, actually, why I tend to read yaoi webcomics, and realised that none of my favourite ones are explicit. I find forbidden love stories appealing, and obviously there’s more potential for the “forbidden” element with portrayals of same-sex relationships. However, it’s the “love” – a genuine emotional impact – which actually hooks me. Sex can certainly be part of that, but it’s just window dressing to a vacant space if there’s insufficient character development to back it up. Alex makes you genuinely care about his characters, and furthermore writes an extremely compelling and thought-provoking plot. There are “light” elements of humour, aesthetically pleasing artwork, and lust, but there are also moral conundrums, ethical dilemmas, and the evocation of empathy. In short, it’s a very well-rounded package, a little like, say, a web-comic equivalent of a great Joss Whedon TV series. 🙂

  • well that’s new.

  • andrea

ohhhhhh so they DID happen, man

  • Johndar

I’m there with Gordon, Mitch, and Kyle. Seemed pretty obvious to me, poor Paul!

  • I’m sorry, I think I’m being an idiot…. Anaado?? Who?

    • Klaus

Anaado is a demon named in Demons, one of the text pieces accesible to Patreon patrons. It is most likely the supine character on page 23 panel one of the bonus comic http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-bonus1-page-22-23/ . Until the name was revealed, it was usually called “the cute demon” by commenters.

      • Ahh yes, I’ve read that, I had forgotten. Thank you!

In which case I’m still shipping Amanda/Spooky/Anaado

  • Paul D’Arbonne

I love how oblivious Paul is. Always the last to find something out. lol

    • Shjade

When you get by on luck, you can’t be expected to also be observant!

  • Everyone keeps talking about Anaado; are they a character in one of the Patreon short prose stories I haven’t read quite yet?

    • Yes, and it’s also believed that he might be the cute demon boy from the previous bonus story. The one we see young Spooky protect when he was in hell.

      • Klaus

From Alex’ comments on that page:

(And you’ll want to pay extra attention to the demon Spooky is rescuing
in the upper right of the page—he plays a large role in the upcoming
Spooky Jones Illustrated Short Story [which, like this Bonus Comic, is
        another Kickstarter Stretch Goal reward!])

      • Thanks for the info Danish! 🙂

  • jreed3842

Guys. I had another dream about the Young Protector’s again…. well…. the community that is.
I dreamt that we were receiving bomb threats, and no one was doing anything about it. So us, The Young Protector’s Community, decided to investigate. We ended up finding the bomb. It was in an old outhouse, and whenever you opened it, a large wave of fire would shoot out. And at first we thought we accidentally triggered the bomb, but someone named Carolyn (shout out to any Carolyn’s in this community) went up and opened the door and stood in front of the fire for a really long time and everyone was freaking out. She then came back unscathed and everyone was like “…What?”
And she showed us that the bomb was all made up and the fire was actually a flame thrower that had dry ice attached to it, so the fire wasn’t hot at all. (…Because…. that’s how fire works, lol)
    And that was it.
    …. Yup.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Well, darn. I gotta ask what type of cheese you’re eating before bedtime to regularly get that quality of dream. The best I got was from mid last year when I got to kill a Dalek by telekinetically ripping it apart to its compenent molecules.

      • jreed3842

Haha. I did grill a cheese quesadilla before bed. It was just a flour tortilla with mild shredded cheddar. Haha

    • Terri Sutton

You know what, I wish I had those kind of dreams. All the dreams I remember are the bog standard ones; being stuck in the middle of the road as a 18 wheeler comes speeding towards me, anything that involves spiders (shudders) and reliving a past life where I jumped off a bridge.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Good work Carolyn!!

  • Saxon_Brenton

    [Looks around campsite]
    Goat?

    • Builds fence around the goats, with barbed wire, spikes and lazers

      • Terri Sutton

But you can’t do that! The goats might get injured if they run into the fence. Sorry mate, the RSPCA is kind of strict about these kind of stuff.

        • Barbed wire is on the top. The goats are safe. Its those fools who think to sacrifice the poor things.

          • Kit the Coyote

Shifts into feral coyote form and starts digging at the fence edge.

          • Sigh. *frees killer weremoles*

          • Kit the Coyote

Yelps in surprise and then grinning shifts into full blown werecoyote form and gleefully howling leaps into a full blown furball fight with the weremoles, goats completely forgotten.

          • My work here is done. 🙂

          • Saxon_Brenton

Why are you going to the effort of defending the goats, when we can just give them laser guided missile launchers and let them defend themselves?

          • Some of the goats are a little trigger happy. I’d be afraid they might shoot the wrong targets

          • Terri Sutton

As long as the person who slaughters the goat is a trained butcher who can humanely dispatch the animals the RSPCA has no problems with killing animals on private property.

          • Nope. No sacrificing of goats on campground grounds. So sayeth the Admiral. 😛

          • Terri Sutton

But what will we eat for the BBQ? Lettuce?!

          • Saxon_Brenton

Takeaway, I suppose. Or (and here’s a radical idea) just purchase the ingredients elsewhere so that there’s no blood.
Sorry sorry sorry. That was far too sensible. Don’t mind me, I think I got enough sleep last night.

          • You may bring in pre-sacrificed hogs? We can have a Luau!

          • Saxon_Brenton

A luau is fine. [Goes about ten metres away for the camp grounds proper and digs a fire pit].

          • Terri Sutton

But pigs are unclean, the food will not be koscher or halal.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’ll bring lots of pineapple for everyone else.

          • -_-

These pigs just had a bath. But you’re welcome to bring a presacrificed beef.

          • Terri Sutton

Unless the water they bathed in magically transformed the pigs into sheep or goats (or camels) they will still be unclean by Jewish and Islamic religious law.

          • The Luau participants will gather over to the right. Those who wish something else will be on the left.

          • Terri Sutton

People who want a goat sacrifice come with me, away from the campground that the Admiral has banned such things from!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Wow, I didn’t know that about the camels.

          • Terri Sutton

Australia has the largest wild camel population in the world and we export camels to the middle east.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Sweet!

      • stickfigurefairytales

I got to go to a goat farm (for dairy, not meat) on my vacation! We got to pet baby goats (I know they’re called kids, but it sounds way less creepy this way) and help feed them, and we got to try milking grown-up goats!

        • Yay! Sounds like so much fun. I have aspirations to be a goat farmer. For milk of course. Well and a sheep farmer for wool. 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve been told that sheep are prone to getting, like, every possible disease plus some they just invented, so be warned.

          • Yeah. Sheep can be delicate creatures. I think some of it also depends on the breed. But I suppose I could just raise alpacas and angora goats.

          • stickfigurefairytales

They would all be so soft!! <3333

          • Kit the Coyote

Pops ears up ^..^ while wrestling with a weremole in an headlock, “Sheep?!”

          • My sheep! 😛

        • davefragments

One time up at Cedar Point, there was this Petting Zoo and I had my Brother’s 4 kids and my Mother and my Aunt. So I’m just siting in the middle of the place with a bottle of sugar water and graham crackers and the little goats are climbing all over me trying to get at the sweets.

It wasn’t supposed to happen that way! Kind of funny even at the time.
There was also a baby goat head butting my backside and pretending to be some big ram or whatever. I thought the little thing was cute. I had a great laugh but the attendants didn’t.
They were cute but not affectionate. Hungry and they sure loved that sugary stuff.

          • stickfigurefairytales

HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT CEDAR POINT?! DO YOU LIVE NEAR ME????

          • davefragments

I live a few miles south of Pittsburgh. Back in the 1980’s when my brother’s kids were little we used to go to Cedar Point for vacations.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That’s awesome! I’m in the Cleveland area, so I grew up going to Cedar Point every summer. 🙂

          • davefragments

I haven’t been there since 1989. I liked the park. We used to stay at their inn and since it was on the beach, I would sit and read while they went swimming. But my Mother didn’t like me being totally in charge in the park. I let the kids ride the wet and crazy stuff. That’s what Uncles are for.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve never stayed at the inn since it’s only about two hours’ drive or so away (I have no idea if it’s still open these days). They’ve built a ton more rides since then, but they still have a lot of the old classics too.

          • davefragments

Sadly, no more little kids to have fun with.
I would look silly trying to ride on my own.
Doctor’s say no to most rides, anyway.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Aw, that’s too bad. 🙁

          • davefragments

That’s why I want a bunch of kids around. They enjoy if it and I have fun.

    • So quiet… *bah* XD

    • Cydney Sabin

Not if Admiral has anything to say about it…

    • Kit the Coyote

^..^ perks up ears and smiles showing canines “Goat?”

  • davefragments

    Anyone here?

    • waiting waiting waiting 🙂

    • Saxon_Brenton

      As the Admiral said: Waiting.

      • davefragments

        My discuss isn’t updating.
        Gotta reboot.

        • Saxon_Brenton

I noticed the same thing. Gonna be one of ‘those’ days. Especially for the people who do V hunting.

          • davefragments

I am tired. I didn’t sleep last night.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Hey everybody, sorry I’m late for camping!

    • davefragments

      hi there

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hi Dave!

    • Hi Stick!!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hi Admiral! How’s it going?

        • Craving something sweet. : But other than that. I’m doing okay. 🙂 How’re you doing?

          • stickfigurefairytales

I’m pretty good – a bit tired, but pretty happy at the moment. I had so much fun with my sisters on our trip. 🙂

          • So now you need a vacation from the vacation? 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

Haha! I feel like that often ends up being the case, don’t you think?

    • Hello! I’ve been catching up on reading… so many new things to read… XD

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Mmm, reading… <3

  • Tahir Raines

    Settling down for the night.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Welcome! Care for some pineapple?

      • Tahir Raines

        Sure.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Here you go! *passes you some freshly cut slices*

  • Michael

Ahoy everyone! I’m sorry I can’t stick around for camping, I have assignments to do. See you on the next page!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, good luck with your assignments! See you later!

      • Michael

Thanks. Really don’t want to do them, but I have to. Studying online, paid almost 3k upfront for the course and I don’t get any extensions after October 14th.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Ah. “Real life getting in the way”. My sympathies. Good luck wrangling them into submission.

  • mogoskier

Hi everyone, I am finally able to camp after months of work. What going on?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yay, welcome back! We’re hanging out, talking about goats.

    • Hi!! Welcome back!

  • stickfigurefairytales
  • dartist123

I feel bad that the only thing I took away from this page is that Spooky hasn’t put his arm around Kyle again yet and I really want him to… because I don’t want him to get cold of course, no other reasons…….LET ME SHIP IN PEACE

    • Ant-Man

i’d prefer spooky sitting on kyle’s lap_ or reclining against kyle’s torso while sitting between his legs/thighs_ or straddling kyle’s lap & bouncing up & down_ all to keep from getting chilly- for his health___if they grind against each other that will create friction/heat

  • Melinda M

    WAT.

  • Ninhursag

I knew it, I knew it *jumps from joy* My OTP was actually together. I want them to get back so badly… I wouldn’t have thought that in a BL comic my OTP is a straight couple, but stranger things have happened.
