The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Truth or Dare—Page 26

119 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Truth or Dare—Page 26

I had an amazingly great time at San Diego Comic Con. I brought more The Young Protectors V1 books than I thought I could possibly sell, and wound up selling out at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday. They went fast! (One of the Prism volunteers kept referring to it as “the book of the Con.”) And it was so great getting a chance to see so many of you in person! 5 days in a row (and 10 hours/day) is a lot when it comes to tabling at a Con, but hearing back from y’all about how much you’re enjoying this comic and getting a chance to shake your hands makes all the hard work worth it. (And I got a chance to hang with The Young Protectors colorist Vero, which was also tons of fun!) The Comic Con experience is everything they say it is, and I’m looking forward to doing it all again next year.

But now I’m off again — this time to Tampa, FL for Rainbow Con! And I’m going to be exhibiting with The Young Protectors penciler Adam DeKraker for the very first time! We’re actually “Guests of Honor” so we’re doing a bunch of fun panels. And you can still get tickets at the door for really affordable prices or you can save even more by registering online. It’ll be my first time in Tampa, and it’d be great to see some East Coast readers. I’ll have some advance copies of The Young Protectors V1 with me along with some special new, sexy The Young Protectors prints. If you have a chance, please stop by and say hi!

So! We end with verbal hugs all around. I hope you enjoyed this little interlude. Please join me in extending a very warm thank you to awesome guest artist Julie Wright for doing such a great job with this intimate story!

On Saturday, Adam and Vero return with something very special! It’s the official “bonus comic” of Volume Two and, much like the Spooky/Commander Bonus Comic, it will give you a chance to get to know one of The Young Protectors‘ characters much more deeply. But this time, it won’t involve sitting around in a police station (or a cabin in the woods, for that matter)—this is an action story, full of danger and romance.

Who will that character be? And what secrets will we learn?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Amanda has the best way to say things!

What a lovely last page of the ToD comic 🙂

    • Klaus

Your connection is slow today, you say?

      • *lol* I did say earlier that it seemed back to normal, and the updating that also slowed it down was finished about an hour ago.
Finally managed to snatch me another V, here on the last page of the ToD. Haven’t gotten one since page 10 >.>

    • Congrats! I bet you are aiming for 69 Vs….just 10 more to go!

      • My 69th will be celebrated with pride xD

  • Awwww!

    Thanks Julie! This was awesome.

  • Adam Black

How could read it that fast?

  • DC

    Amanda is wonderfully kind

  • stickfigurefairytales

Yay bonus comic! This was great.

  • davefragments

Good ending. Except I wonder what Kyle is going to write on the note.

  • Adam Black

    In panel 4,
Mitch is totally checking out Spooky.

and Spooky just flirted with Kyle.
That sound slike “Go stick it under your pillow”

  • Saxon_Brenton

[smiles] Warm fuzzies to Alex on having all the Young Protectors vol.1 sell out. Being called ‘the book of the con’ is pretty neat too. Hope they similarly sell out at Rainbow Con as well.

  • o_o … Omg, a new bonus story! Who? I wanna know with who?!

What a wait this will be. If it’s Mitch we might have to bring the smelling salt for Doki 😉

    • Madock345

Mitch is actually really possible… We just had his vigilante work set up as a potential topic. My money is on Fluke though.

      • Well, yeah, the romance part doesn’t leave Mitch out. We don’t know how experienced he is with flirting and having a crush (or someone having one on him). He could have been as precocious on the sexual area as Spooky 😉

I just feel that ‘a lot of action and romance’ may leave him out, since he’s the youngest, and only just turned 15. Had it just been action, my guess would have been more on him.

  • Klaus

But but but who are they going to kill first?

    • Madock345

I’m going to guess he’ll go for Kyle to prove he’s really over him.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      “Duncan” — he says hopefully?

  • Hours Left

The Truth or Dare comic was lots of fun, but I’m definitely ready for the next bonus story. Lots of possibilities! 😀

  • Looking at panel 4 and happy Spooky for minutes, and I have this weird desire to put my mouth to his navel and blow air/make farting noises xD

… I think it’s about time I should go to bed.

  • TwilightDreamer

    lol, adorable page 🙂

  • Good to hear TYP sold out – and even better to hear it sold out that fast. 🙂

There may be competition for first comment once people have got over their con lag. :->

  • Sapfo

thank you Julie for the wonderful art of this bonus! So cute to see them all in your style.

Oh and another bonus, sly Alex! ^_^

  • Klaus

I hope the new bonus comic is about Gordon. We really need to get to know him better. Maybe need is the wrong word. I want to get to know him better.

    • Yes, I kinda hope it too, though there’s a couple others I feel the same way about. It may be too much to hope for Amanda, and I wonder if we’d ever get Duncan’s pre-story.

      • Klaus

Duncan would be interesting. Sircea would need a very long story.

  • This was a lovely comic/interlude! Thank you, Julie. I’m looking forward to the next one, of course.

Glad to hear you’re doing well with the sales, Alex, but I hope you don’t wear yourself out too much with all the con travel. Take good care of yourself.

    • From what it looks like, the weekend’s con will be the last before we get around to meet him at YaoiCon in september.

Yes, Alex, it’s official. We (incl. me) will be at YaoiCon this year. For me it’s my very first con 😀 *so excited*

      • YAY! That’s so exciting! I’m looking forward to getting a chance to meet you in person, Danish! 🙂

    • I’m going to do my best to try to take care of myself. But I think sleep won’t be an option until next week… 😉

  • Michael

    Hooray, a happy ending!

… don’t you dare put that jacket on, Spooky. Don’t you dare.

  • Connor

Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving all this bonus content.

But, man, you’re really milking that cliffhanger for all it’s worth, Alex.

    • *lol* Yeah, the bonus story we’re getting next is ‘normal’ in the way chapters are posted. In first volume was prologue, chapter 1 and interlude.
Here in vol. 2 (the next book) we’ll get chapter 2 + 3 and now this coming interlude-story. Damn, book 2 will be a big one!

The bonus story we just ended was a reward part from the first kickstarter, and I don’t think was ever supposed to have been posted like this (page by page). I believe it was to be a seperate comic for the kickstarters (and possibly sale online), but the need for a regular-page break meant it came in handy instead of taking a hiatus 🙂

      • Yep. I wasn’t originally planning to post the Truth or Dare Bonus here, but when it became clear that we really needed to build our buffer back up, it was a good fit so we didn’t have to go on hiatus.

And yes, Volume 2 is going to be quite big. Lots and lots of story in that one. 🙂

  • Mary Klemzak

Awwe I feel special. Bonus comic. Maybe Fluke? Or Flyboy? Or Tsunami? Would be interesting to see how any of them discovered their powers.

    1)Floating toddler Mitch?
2)Gord playing with his friends by a river, spontaneous splashing and not being in the water?
3)How does one discover one has good luck/bad luck?
4)Amanda correctly guessing where her mom is going on a secret, classified mission? *shudders*

And wow, with the books! Worked out, hopefully the Florida one will be just as successful. Who knew there’s a big demand for a hot, gay, and awesome, superhero?

Thanks for the little side story. Was cool to see some background and side story of heroes in their cool down time.

  • This page is just too adorable. If Mitch isn’t in the BC, how am I going to survive? ;-P

    • Klaus

Go to the list of characters found under Alex’ comments. Click on “Flyboy”. That should tide you over until he appears in the regular comic again.

      • 😛 I was being silly. But it will be rough going from seeing so much Mitch to none at all in the updates.

  • Nate

I think I speak for all of us when I say we’d all like to become “better friends” with one or more of the Protectors. 😉

    (Dibs on Spooks!)

    • Klaus

I fear that several readers are going to claim that they called dibs on Spooks long since.

      • Chris Dangerfield

        Klaus is wise………
(chris throws Mitch at Doki to distract and grabs spooky and makes a run for it)

    • Ha!

    • Chris Dangerfield

      pre-dibs…….. 🙂

  • bronakopdin

    really fuzzy indeed ^^
so another bonus story coming!! I’m hella curious, though the “wood cabin” might hint on Kyle if e think back on the latest patreon illustration?)

either way we’ll see on Saturday 🙂

Thanks a LOT, Julie, for going on this journey with us! Your art is awesome and I enjoyed this special comic from beginning to end 😀

    • The wood cabin was a reference to this story. It won’t be a police station (like the bonus comic with Spooky) and it won’t be the wood cabin, as where they were in this extra comic.

      • Yep. Just so. 🙂

      • bronakopdin

… of course… I always just saw this big room and the sofas and people, totally forgot they’re in a cabin >_>’
must be because I’m so tired these days x’D

  • fujoshifanatic

Aww, Spooky’s putting his clothes back on! *pout* Thank you Alex; this was a fantastic interlude, so enjoyable that it flew by in an instant! I hope you and Adam built up a good buffer during this time, but I’m very glad we got to enjoy this wonderful work during the break from the main storyline. I hope we get to see more collaborations with you and Julie in the future!

So glad you enjoyed a really successful San Diego Comic Con–that one and the New York one are still on my to do list–and I hope you have a fantastic Rainbow Con! A family emergency may prevent me from going (how I ironic; all this time I’ve been flying across the country to attend cons, and the one con I could drive to I may miss! :-), but I’m sending good vibes to you and all the TYP fandom in attendance. *pouts mightily at the awesome panels and dinner I’ll be missing*

In the meantime, I will console myself with the next awesome interlude; maybe it’ll be about Flyboy? Hm…

    • Thank you so much, fujoshifanatic! I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed this interlude and that the pages flew by!

And thank you also for the good vibes for Rainbow Con. I certainly hope you’re able to come, both because I’d love to see you there and also because I’m hoping that the family emergency resolves well. I’ll be sending my own most positive thoughts your way.

      Big hugs! 🙂

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Spooky putting…. clothes ON!!!! Noooooooooooooo,
      (chris clutches hearts)

  • Tristan Black Wolf

Tiny gripe from a Grammar Nazi — it’s “Hear, hear!”, to implore the audience to truly hear what’s said *grins* Not to worry to much. The story and art are far too great to be brought low by such a tiny point. However, being a writer in real life, and an editor/proofreader for the occasional paycheck, such things jump out at me. Believe me: This work is some of the greatest I’ve ever seen in the graphic novel genre OR the novel genre as well — superlative work!

    • Sanbai

Whoa! That’s actually kind of a big typo! Good catch!

    • Sal Wolffs (Garnasha)

Woah, I sort of skipped over that since so many people do it wrong it sort of gets filtered out (kind of like living next to a railway). Well caught. Here’s hoping Alex sees your comment (there should be a typo thread for this sort of thing, except each page in itself contains too little text to make it worthwhile).

    • I wrote Alex about this. I noticed it too.

      • Thank you again for the heads up about this, Danish!

    • Wow, thank you so much for the kind words, Tristan! You’ve got me grinning here. And thank you for the heads up. It’s now been fixed. 🙂

      • Tristan Black Wolf

You’re very welcome, good sir. And don’t be TOO flattered, or I’ll ask you to review my latest novella! *tease* Your work truly is excellent — your stories never fail to please.

  • Jason Moon

    Will anyone remember this subconsciously?

  • Ninhursag

This was such a fun chapter ^^ Alex, glad to hear you had fun at Comic Con, I live outside of America, in Romania, but we have Comic Con here as well, East European Comic Con.

    • Thank you, Ninhursag! I hope you also have fun at the next EECC! 🙂

  • davefragments

I fell asleep last night. I was tired. Too many things happened all at once yesterday. HOWEVER, I wanted to say that this was a good chapter and interlude. I enjoyed the different artwork and style. Good Work.

  • Klaus

If any of you play role playing games, you may want to check out this Kickstarter:

It is for a new edition of Blue Rose. If you don’t know Blue Rose, it is a fantasy game set in a world where the sun god is gay and “star marriages” including more than two people are common, The original system was really good. D20 with most of the flaws removed. This will be a different system.

  • I wonder if you will add the starting part as comic pages as well when it will be published as book one day or will the start remain a short description of the situation??? … (O.o) …

    • It will probably always remain a short description. I originally scripted those opening pages, and it just felt like it delayed the real start of the story. (Which would be when Spooky takes his pants off. That’s the start of every party.)

      • Tahir Raines

      • LOL so true … that’s so Yaoi like (in the original meaning of the acronym) … with the focus on “the yummy parts” … (^_~) …

      • Chris Dangerfield

        HA! So true.

  • Tahir Raines

I’m both sad and glad this short is over. Sad b/c it’s so cute and it was nice to see all the characters just have downtime to chat and connect with each other. Glad b/c I’m excited to get back to the main story and the ever lovely Platinum Priestess.

    • Klaus

Not quite yet. There is a bonus comic coming up.

  • Dave Nguyen

hmm, I was hoping the curse would finish more instantly, and everyone gets to wonder why Spooky is half-naked and cuddling up next to Kyle.

  • Jaq

Excellent interlude! I know more about the characters – and thus you will be able to rend and tear my heart even better as we resume. O.o

    • 🙂

      • Chris Dangerfield

I love how the “rending of hearts makes alex smile”….. mwaaaaahahahahahaha…

  • jreed3842

I dunno why…. but my comment from last night didn’t post. (I must have forgot to hit “post” or something… *shrug*) So this is what I was SUPPOSED to have said yesterday:
I adore the 4th panel! That is an adorable/sexy/awesome shot of Spooky. I vote that Spooky never puts his clothes on. (As an added bonus that means he needs to keep having skin-to-skin contact with Kyle!)

  • Kate G

Awwwwwwwwwwww, it’s the end of half-naked Spooks! BUT, it’s back to the original plot line! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I’m still upset that none of them will remember anything said here. I feel like they learned a lot about each other and a line of more honest communication was made. I hope they’ll be able to make this line of communication in the main plot line.

I really enjoy coming to this comic, especially after horseback riding days like today. It cheers me up. One of the ponies (one I’ve ridden and am quite attached to, Red Rover) isn’t eating and is laying down (not really good), so he isn’t feeling the greatest and that’s made me feel all sorts of crummy. My lesson was great, don’t get me wrong (bruises on the inside of my knees always say I’ve been working good!), but I left feeling really crummy because no one likes a sick pony, especially one as cute as he. He’s this sweet, ticklish little tyke with hair as red as Kyle’s, so I’m still down in the dumps all these hours later.

  • Chibi

while you are reading the new page take some time to check out this kickstarter

    Only 27 hours left 🙁

  • Adam Irving

Yay bonus comics!!! This was such a nice diversion, I hope it afforded some time to build up a nice backlog of pages and give our primary artists some breathing room. And now we get another bonus comic? Score!

  • You know, when I first saw we were getting another bonus/interlude comic, I said that I’d love a Mitch comic, but that I didn’t think it would be him – due to the romance part, and Mitch being the youngest.
Then I ended up making my own counter argument, and say his age doesn’t leave him out (just look at Spooky).

… and the more I consider it, the more I think we’re going to have a very happy Doki tonight 🙂

Yup, it feels like it’s been building up to this, so I’ve changed my mind. A Mitch comic is my first guess now (since it doesn’t feel like Amanda will be an option).

    • You are building me up just to crash aren’t you?

      • Aww, no. No, I don’t think I am.
Or I really hope that I’m not, because I’ve gotten pretty excited about the thought, of seeing what romantic situation Mitch got himself into, myself.
I have high hopes of a Mitch story 🙂

      • Chris Dangerfield

Doki is wise to prepare for anything… Alex is nothing if not unpredictable! (a lot of the reason why we love him).

    • Saxon_Brenton

We’ll just have to Wait And See(tm), won’t we.
But on that note, I will be travelling by train back to Sydney (no more puttering in my sister’s garden, trying not to step in the roo poo) and will not be back until after the update. I will be you all a merry camping.

      • Yes, we’ll wait and see.
Have a safe trip, and you’ll join a camp again soon.

      • Terri Sutton

Out of all of the encounters that one could have with roos, stepping in their poo seems like one of the most benign.

        • Chris Dangerfield

          spoken like one who knows!

          • Terri Sutton

Lets just say that even in petting zoos a certain emphasis is put on being very careful when offering the roos food.

          • Chris Dangerfield

Ohhhhhh? So they like finger food… (literally)?

          • Terri Sutton

Not really, but they can be aggressive when eating and their teeth continuously grow like rabbits.

      • Chris Dangerfield

        roo poo… an awesome challenge.

    • Nate

I have invoked the gods of the Net… and I think you’re right. 😉

      • Chris Dangerfield

        So many gods………… hmmmm……….

  • syllibub

*claws my way out of the grave, nonchalantly brushes dirt out of hair*

How’s it goin’? I’m really eager to see who’s starring in the newest bonus comic! This has been a really fun interlude, and I’m bummed that I wasn’t able to really participate in the discussion because there were a lot of great character moments throughout. (Calculated ploy by Alex to make us care more deeply about these guys while in main comic-time they flop around unconscious and in dire straits? I think so.)

    • Chris Dangerfield

(chris is so thrilled to see zombie – @syllibub:disqus – that he immediately passes out cold. his family mistakes this for death and buries him alive. don’t worry he shall rise again to shuffle over, in suitably smelly and disgusting fashion, and congratulate the lady s. on her return to the mortal realms.*)

      • *sticks a bamboo straw down into the dirt so Chris can breath*

        • Chris Dangerfield

          I love a zombie enabler!!!

    • Welcome back! Here’s a comb and a mirror!

  • Chris Dangerfield

Awwww crap. I’ve been so busy I didn’t get to say something long-ass and boring so……….

Excellent interlude and thank you Alex and Julie!

    • Oh shush! You’re comments aren’t boring.

    • Adam Black

You’s better hurry up, and do the next page soon.

I’m repressing the urge to do one in @chrisdangerfield:disqus style ,
      — and I’m just not that good at repressing.

      • Chris Dangerfield

        Call “who” Hilda?

        • Adam Black

Are you asking for a last name too, or do you want me to write a full backstory ?

Hilda Schwitzenwinken . She’s the German exchange student and High School girlfriend ( ahem: beard ) that you have Golden girls nights with, in your contrafactual biography.

She’s totally hot too—- Its too bad your not straight ( ” …. ” which is a thing she sadly told you one too many times, later on in ‘Chris Dangerfield: The counterfactual College years’ . Which is why you stopped writing .

  • Hiya, I made it 🙂

  • Alan Michael Williams

Maybe it’s cuz I’ve been following this interlude spottily, but I don’t really *get* it. What is this “veritas curse” and a “note”? Is the whole point just to have us get to know the characters better whilst they forget everything? Why can’t some of the stuff be “in the open”?

(Note: “next” button on page 25 is broken)

    • Landis963

It I remember correctly, they were all forced to tell the truth, and the escape clause involved a ritual of some kind. Once they were done, the curse would wipe out everything they learned during said ritual. Hence, Truth or Dare.

      • Landis963

This was in the preamble bit in the commentary on the first page; the actual bonus comic started with Spooky stripping to his proverbial skivvies.

  • theunrealist

    Hello, new here!

Late in the game to the wonderful comic that Alex and his gang have awesomely provided an amazing comic at no cost. I can’t believe the amount of coloring, inking and writing you guys put into this. Comics is a tough industry to get into and really, it’s who you know and luck to be able to do anything for darkhorse or image. But you guys managed to create a faithful viewership! Kudos to the talented men and women that made this comic possible!!

P.S. – I”m still onboard the whole kyle x duncan ship (very foolish of me but I can’t help it) though justifiably many have jumped overboard. I have to admit, I haven’t felt this connected to a pair of comic book characters in a long long time. I’ve been burned in the past with the typical “always going to end terribly” or
the “tragic gay relationship” in many stories I read and while it kinda happened with this couple, at least there’s a wonderful story behind it. This comic change a
lot of that and create all sorts of layers that has me hooked! Also
there are lot of opinions on whether Duncan is worthy of redemption or
not and I still think he does. I can’t get enough of him.

    • Welcome, welcome!! 😀

    • Chris Dangerfield

Yes welcome to THE YOUNG PROTECTION Addiction Center! Now just to be clear, we are all fellow addicts and will do nothing but encourage your addiction (*chris hands over the “terms of fandom” for sign-off*).

LOL… very glad you joined this great crowd. Currently, we are all trying not to obviously crush on the adorbs, but woefully underage, Mitch. Some of us are succeeding better than others (it’s a don’t ask don’t tell thing) 😀

    • Welcome, theunrealist! Glad to have you here and thank you very much for such a thoughtful first comment! Very glad you’re enjoying the story (and its layers) and hope to see you here again soon!

  • SethBlizzard

I really liked this one. It had a 12 Angry Men vibe about it; a simple sitdown but so intriguing and you never know what someone’s gonna share.

  • Jeff Baker

Awwwwww! That was sweet! Seriously! Loved it!
