The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy—Page 8

140 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy—Page 8

Alley oop!

(This page will be a bit easier to grok in the printed book, obviously. To see a smaller version, click here.)

The Kickstarter project to raise funds for printing Artifice was a stunning success! It’s probably going to take me a couple more weeks to recover from all the effort I put into it (there’s still smoke coming out of my ears), but I am deeply, deeply grateful to you all for your support. And I can’t wait to get your books out to you! 😀

We have new Fan Art by geekypnai entitled “His name is Kyle!!”. Please take a peek at that.

And WOOT! We are now up at $158 towards the very first bonus page of The Young Protectors!

Special thanks go out to Esperanza V., Patrisha W. and Christopher M. for their generous donations over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to Marie-Line C., Tyler B. and Safiya M. for their super-generous $25 donations!

Finally, a superhero strength hug goes out to Jennifer M. for their amazingly generous $50 donation!

Thank you all so, so much! I know this is very early days for this comic and that the stakes haven’t really been established yet, but I very much appreciate the support and the vote of confidence! It’s a huge morale booster! This week I’ve been getting art for Chapter 2 from Adam and Vero and have been working on the script for Chapter 3 and I can’t wait to share it all with you. Fun ahead! 😀

All right! Looks like The Annihilator isn’t quite done with Kyle yet… What do you think he could he possibly want with him?

NEXT TIME: Characters use actual words!

If you particularly enjoy any of these pages and use Facebook, please click the Like button on that page. It’s useful to know what’s working and it helps me get the word out!

*Alex gains 7 million NerdCool points for using “grok” in a writeup*

  • That. Is one pretty action progression scene.

    I am amused :3

  • All I could think was ~

Superman: Don’t worry, I’ve got you.
Lois:  You’ve got me…Who’s got you?!

Glad The Sexy isn’t gonna let The Little Hottie plummet to his death, even if he is a Supervillian.

    Love it. 🙂

  • Ok this guy is the coolest villain ever.

  • grinsekatze

wooow this page is really impressing, and it is amusing at the same time xD i hope he will carry him bridal style to the ground now, he actually looks like a gentleman, although he didn’t behave like one, yet 😉
i am excited and look forward to the new page!!!!

  • AnyOtaku

This page is both awesome and cute. I though that Annihilator was going to catch him, but I wasn’t expecting that he eould make such jumps…
P.S: poor Kyle, i didn’t realise he was so away!

    • Thank you! (And yes, The Annihilator tossed him quite high in the air…)

  • melinda stumpf

    *cough* sex *cough*

  • ^_^ Wow, he really threw him quite high, didn’t he? Lol, well at least he didn’t let him go smoosh! He must certainly want him for something. 😉

    • samae

  • ….I’m so sorry, but the only thing I could think of when I saw this page was, “duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!”

    • Krista Parizek

      Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!! XD Called it.

  • Sky huggles are totally great! 😀 Awesome page!

  • Aikka

That page reminds me about platform games… o..o

  • Yukiness

Actual words?! Oh Alex you shouldn’t have *blush*

Loving the parkour elements and how well it flows here. Despite it being split into three sperate panels there is still a great sense of speed. And speed without speed lines is no easy feat. Commendable work you guys.

    • Thank you, Yukiness! Yep, I definitely think Adam did a great job with this too. A tough thing to pull off!

(And yes, actual words in less than 36 hours! 😉 )

  • Aw, how thoughtful of him, not letting Kyle smash his face on the pavement! Kyle has such a pretty face, it would be a shame!

And nice panels – I loved the sequence and how it gives a sensation of speed! As Aikka said it does remember a game. [gamer on] But I thought of Prince of Persia – Forgotten Sands, you could do just that, jumping between walls [/gamer off]

Ps: I’m too sleepy (it’s 7am where I live right now =_=) to think in English properly so… I may have killed Ms. Grammar on my comment.

    • Aikka

I think something like that was possible in more games than just Prince of Persia xD For sure i remember doing it but don’t remember in what games… o..o or maybe it was one of the PoP…? *sigh*

      • ThatOddGuy

Infamous? Assassins Creed? Not quite the same, but you get my drift…

      • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

I know for sure you can do stuff like that in Prince of Persia: Rival Swords.

      •  You could do it in some of the Mega Man games too, IIRC, although it was a pain in the butt.

        • ErykaSoleil

It certainly was (still is, although now I play it on PC with the controller). Oh, the profanity issued forth upon -almost- getting to the top of a wall and then losing the rhythm and falling to the bottom . . . again.

          •  Pretty sure there were certain levels i just never beat due to the wallbouncing, and i’m a hard-headed gamer.  Damn you, Nintendo, and your genuine challenges!

      • ErykaSoleil

It’s been a skill tester in a whole bunch of games for yeeeeaaaars, although it varies as to whether you’re -only- jumping off the walls or also using things like ledges and clotheslines.

      • Celestia’s Snout

Old comment is a comment that is old, but Mario platformers were also doing the wall jump ever since Mario 64. Don’t think it’s missed a single platformer in the series since then, and New Super Mario Bros introduced it into Mario’s 2D environment.

        ~The More You Know~

  • Oh man, i just said “OMG Prince of Persia!,” but Alis mentioned it right below. Whoops. This is still an amazing set of action panels.

  • Whaaa  is this guy a villain? But… He look so nice! I was under the impression that he was kind of watching over fireboy here, and wanted to give him a lesson. Maybe I’m half right XD

This comic is really promising, love it!

    • b3nc0

& what if Kyle, the redhead & hotheaded fireboy, was the bad guy?
He just went in a bar & doesn’t look 21-y-o to me U_U

      • ErykaSoleil

Maybe Kyle just looks younger than he really is. I’m 28, and still get carded for pretty much everything. I’ve also been asked if my kids are my kids or my siblings (at least twice), and whether I’m the parent or the babysitter. :p

There are also lots of localities that allow adults under the drinking age into bars, as long as they don’t try to buy alcohol (in my experience, those places usually put brightly colored bracelets on the legal drinkers). Or maybe he’s in Louisiana, where the legal drinking age is 18.

    • Thank you, Linn! I really appreciate the vote of confidence!

  • ThatOddGuy

Hmm…so far, we don’t know what Sil–The Annihilator  wants, and he hasn’t actually hurt Kyle…I’m betting on non-villain, or…yeah, actually I can’t see anything else happening…he probably wants to invite Kyle to some group…or maybe ask him for directions to the clearly marked gay bar? Anyway, I can’t wait to see Kyle’s personality explored more in the magical text page coming next!

    • nah… that guy is the super villian…. non-villians don’t have ninja stars on their wrists at the ready.

      • ThatOddGuy

…Don’t make me get my Ninja Hero list….XD

        • ErykaSoleil

          ^ This. 🙂

    • Cool. We’ll definitely be getting to know these guys better over the next few pages. 😉

  • Chaucer59

    Weirdest. Foreplay. Sequence. Ever.

    • b3nc0

I don’t know, we’ve had some dance steps, clothes grabbing in order to expose some skin, full body warming by means of hand palms & it seems we’re about to witness a bride like carrying♥ It may not be totally by the book, but they look like they’re growing into each other ^_^

      • Chaucer59

        [With apologies to Monty Python]

What’s wrong with a kiss, boy?
Why not start him off with a kiss?

Stroking the thighs, kneading the buttocks. All these options before you go leaping toward tossing him five stories into the air.

        • kiebeau

          lol, made my day!

  • b3nc0

After all, it seems none of them have fly power =°(

    No, super-high-jumping-with-little-to-no-footing doesn’t count…
NO it /doesn’t/, one can’t have any of that `-´

  • fujoshifanatic

LOL! Somehow this reminds me of a cat playing with a little ginger mouse. Except, of course, he doesn’t look like he wants to hurt his new toy, which is chivalrously cute for a super villain! Awesome sequencing there on this page; can’t wait for the next one (with words! :-D)

    • ErykaSoleil

I thought “ginger” specified redhead with freckles?

    • Hehe. Glad you liked the update, fujoshifanatic! Thank you!

  • Best fucking page ever! LOVE IT!!!!

  • b3nc0

I almost forgot: is it possible to vote for ‘E.T.E.’ on Top Web Comics? The button on the right still says ‘Artifice’

    • Ah, yes, thank you for the reminder. I need to get on that……..

  • CotinaS

Absolutely wonderful page by Adam and Veronica!
Poor Kyle^^.I think this sequence is gonna be indicative of how they’ll relate to each other for quite some time.
Kyle always up in the air as the Annihilator throws him for a loop:).

    • You might be on to something there with how they’re going to relate, CotinaS. 😉

And yes! I also think Adam and Vero did a great job with this page! 😀

  • ithilloke

A zillion cool points for an appropriate usage of the word “grok”!  Oh yes, and nice page. 😉

  • Eze_stryker

I hope these two aren’t going to be a couple. Abusive relationship much?

    • ErykaSoleil

I wouldn’t consider this abusive, as The Annihilator hasn’t actually hurt Kyle at all; and I’m assuming Kyle was trying to defend himself from some perceived danger when he tried to fight earlier.

      • Eze_stryker

Physical isn’t the only kind of abuse. Also, he’s tossing him around like a rag doll. How is that even remotely indicative of a healthy “Hey, we should totally date”  thought?

        • I kind of agree with you, but at the same time, if you want a good example of an abusive relationship, check out the latest Teahouse page.

          • Eze_stryker

Serious difference between superheros/villains and whores and their clients. One of them has an expected unequal unhealthy romantic relationship.

Where I can get behind some ‘over aggressive/emotionally vacant character hooking up with other emotionally available character’ – this particular relationship is actually one I would find rather disgusting. I couldn’t really say why this one bothers me more.

          • Well, perhaps they have backstory :  Right now I’m waiting to see it unfold, since at least we can say that Kyle hasn’t actually been hurt, per se.  Just joining the mile high club in a very unexpected and nonsexy way.

          • ErykaSoleil

Well, let’s give it a chance and see where it goes. Alex hasn’t let us down so far, has he?

          • ErykaSoleil

If you’re talking about Axis and Rhys, they don’t really have a relationship–Axis is a whore in a brothel, and Rhys is a client who has no real emotional attachment to anybody (except possibly being super-protective of his little sister). I could see an argument for Xanthe being emotionally abusive to his wife, but that’s about it.

        • ErykaSoleil

Keep in mind that Kyle started this whole thing with throwing flame and punches at a guy who was simply talking to him. (It may be that The Annihilator is a rather infamous bad guy, and Kyle was expecting a fight anyway, but we don’t know either way at this point.)

The key difference between an unhealthy, abusive relationship and a healthy BDSM relationship is whether or not there is consent. Just because someone is being tossed around doesn’t necessarily mean it’s abusive, and these are people with super powers–what would potentially kill a normal person may not be a big deal with them. Who knows?

  • Epistasthai

whooo, beautiful page! Can’t wait to see what happens when Kyle gets caught. And I’m wondering what they’re gonna say to each other.

    • Thank you, Epistasthai! I’m glad you’re looking forward to more! 😀

  • Chrome_chan

  • HermeticallySealed

Hah!  You said “grok.”  I haven’t seen anyone else say that in a very long time.  ^^

Interesting to see where this is heading.

    • Yep, “grok” is a word that needs to be used more often. 😉

Glad to hear you’re interested in what comes next!

  • There’s a lot going on here I like the dynamic of the page 🙂

    • Thank you, Cathcer. I like what Adam did here too. 🙂

  • ForeverForking

Tsk tsk. So like a villain, bopping young heroes about like that even when he doesn’t intend to kill them.

No, wait, thinking of mean cats. I think it applies to both!

    • Silver-Foxy-foo-foo
      Hopping through the forest,
      Picking up the pyros
and bopping them on the head!

      • Yukiness

I’m suddenly torn between how awesome you are and my morbid fear of that song

  • Ha! Who needs flight powers anyway?

I have to say, Kyle’s face in the 2nd panel makes me laugh. “D:”

    • YES! That’s one my favorite things about this page. I LOVE that Adam did that here. 😀

  • DAMN fine action page all around! Definitely a true strong point for TYP. Also smirking at how this is the tiniest I’ve seen GSM yet.

Dot eyes on semi realistic cartoons always make me giggle stupidly. Loving the second panel to pieces here!

Lastly, is Kyle’s body super strong, as well? It would be dangerous to stop an average person falling midair if he or she is traveling at a fast enough velocity.

    • ErykaSoleil

Looking at how the two are positioned in relation to each other in the final panel, I don’t think Kyle’s going to be hurt by the catch–I’m thinking it will be more like when you catch something heavy, and simultaneously absorb and redirect the momentum so you don’t get your shoulders dislocated and/or lose your balance. (I hope that made sense; I am aware that I fail utterly at describing physics sometimes.)

      • Yeah, I thought that too about the physics. But GSM (Giant Shiny Man XD) is a villain, not a doctor. So I still thought hero could get hurt with someone smashing into him. Just being silly I guess. :-p

        • ErykaSoleil

Well, you don’t have to be a scientist to understand the concept of shock absorbers, so maybe there’s hope. 🙂

          • Hey, yeah! GSM would totally be into mechanical stuff. Our hero will make funny faces another day!

    • Thank you, Kristi. Yep, The Young Protectors is going to have a bit more action than Artifice.  Something fun for me to explore and Adam is especially good at action scenes.

I also like the dot eyes here… 😉

  • ErykaSoleil

I love this page. That bottom jumping position in the second panel is driving me nuts, but I’m just going to chalk it up to The Annihilator showing off how amazing and awesome he is. The art and the layout on this page are fantastic–good job Adam and Veronica! Also, I agree with the people who have commented on how amusing Kyle’s face is in the second panel. It makes me chuckle. 🙂

Alex, if The Annihilator is supposed to be a bad guy we hate, I think you’re doing a terrible job. :p

    • I chalk up the bottom jumping position to an artist having a little bit of fun. XD

I bet we’ll start hating him at least a little more after we see he’s a jerk through some plot lines. Like, so that Kyle has to pull his hair out over him all the time (Not literally. Natural red hair shouldn’t be wasted!). Angst and all that!

    • The Annihilator might be showing off… just a little. 😉

Very glad you like what you’re seeing here—thank you for the specific call outs!

(And The Annihilator thinks you should always root for the bad guys…)

  • pookturtles

    • Superjenny

      I don’t know.

      …But you’re totally not alone.

  • Sam

I also agree that falling Kyle in panel 2 is awesome 🙂  I’m dying to know what the Annihilator’s motives are here… and more importantly, how Kyle will react when he finds out.

  • elijah elquest

    this page wow!

  • Guest

  • Ryn

from the looks of things he was going to land in the dumpster, with the closed lid…owwww.

the Annihilator was the kind of kid to play with his food wasn’t he?

    • ErykaSoleil

Considering some of the things that end up in dumpsters, hitting the closed lid might actually be preferable . . .

  • Myrtu

I just love this page. It is brilliant. I like that somersault the Annihilator does in panel two. This thing is just awesome. I’m looking forward to the next page~

  • Lorescien

Oh, dear LORD. I love everything about this comic so far! XD

  • Bealtaine

I can see the faceplant Kyle is about to do in my head. Please God , he has good dental…:/

  • Can’t wait to see what happens next <3

  • I love when men carry other men bridal style. Catch him, catch him!

    • Knees him in the back. Cause he’s a jerk like that.

  • Parkourman was never very impressive as a superhero. That is until you’re falling next to a conviently placed fire escape and alley wall. Of course when he is the one who caused you to fall in the first place, you get mixed feelings about him. Kinda like when someone pushes you from behind and just before you go into traffic, they pull you back and say, “Saved your life!”…Parkourman is an asshole :/

    • ErykaSoleil

      • Yeah, Parkour. That thing people do when they run along fire escapes and climb buildings. All very acrobatic and stuff. Therefore as a superhero he is Parkourman! With the power to…do fancy flips!
Hey, until I know the characters real name (and probebly after) he will be Parkourman to me.

        • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

          Parkourman? I love it. ^.^

I used to do parkour. Now I’m almost 30, I wish I hadn’t. My knees and ankles really took a pounding doing parkour (I think hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump in high school didn’t help either).

        • ErykaSoleil

OH! Yes! I had even looked it up before to remind myself what it meant. Maybe this time the mental post-it note will stay stuck up on the wall of my brain. :p

  • Ambler

    *Punches in face*
    *Catches during fall*
What the hell is going on.

At least you can see his pearly whites from the sky. Like some sort of sexy beacon.

  • ToryKasper

    *peeks in*

Hello, I am a long time follower of Yaoi911, and have been here since Artifice’s third page, but I haven’t really posted that much, but I just wanted to come on and say that I am really enjoying this comic so far. The art is brilliant, and already it feels like this comic is going to stray away from usual cliches. I’m excited to see how this plays out!!!

    • It makes me really happy to hear you’re enjoying The Young Protectors, ToryKasper! Always great to hear from a long-time reader of my comics. 🙂 Thank you!

  • RustyBurrell

He totally kicked off the blank space between panels >:)

    Can’t wait for more 😀

    • Hehe. Glad to hear it, RustyBurrell!

    • MisterTeatime

Amusingly, that space is called a gutter… which is totally a thing you could encounter on your way up the side of a building.

  • ThatOddGuy

I know it’s waaay too early to camp, but, well….. *Grabs Pocky sticks*

    • Trade you some pocky for some green tea mochi ice cream?  I too am camping obscenely early.  Pity I can’t check this at work when I sleep and later wake 😛

      • Krista Parizek

*joins the camp party* I got the chips and a coolers full of drinks 🙂

  • Ambler

Are we sure this isn’t another robot guy? Because when he jumps, all I can hear is “SHUNUNUNUNUNUNUNUNUN”

    • ErykaSoleil

That was fun to read aloud. XD

      • Ambler

Not as fun as it was to write, lol.

  • Feverfew_M

Love the art on this page. The motion is captured brilliantly in these three panels.
There isn’t much story, yet, but I’m curious how it will play out.

  • GashlycrumbTiny

    Brilliant page composition.  Brilliant!

  • O.O JUMP!

  • ErykaSoleil

Looking forward to the next page in a few hours, but I can only camp in spirit tonight–my husband just got home Wednesday from a year in Afghanistan, so no hours and hours on the internet for a while. 🙂

    • Well, that seems like a fantastic reason to get off the Internet. Please wish him a hearty welcome home from all of us! 😀

  • Howdy campers! New page will be up in just a few minutes. 🙂

  • I’ll save you bby don’ worry

  • elijah elquest

i still cant get over Winnona’s ability to show motion. this is over the top!

    • Sanbai

Not Winnona. This is a new comic – new artists! Yay!

  •  This page… this page… give your artist’s a pat on the back. Or a hug. Or an extra coffee. They deserve it.

  • Oh, well that’s nifty . :3

  • My Rylander

Just beautiful and brilliant. Love this page.

  • Man, I just found Artifice tonight (Loved it, was so in love with the characters) and came right here to check out this awesome superhero themed comic. Page 8 blows me away. I love the continuity of movement, the creative way of introducing the characters abilities and personalities, and the visuals are just stunning.

I must admit, I’m one of those readers that’s hesitant to invest emotionally in a character or a story unless I’m sure my heart isn’t going to get broken. (Basically, I’m the sort that reads the last page first.) Based on Artifice, I’m now trusting you as an author enough to read a work in progress. This is the highest praise I have for an author. You sir, rock.

  • OMG this is so amazing XD

  • ME!

Huuuuuge props to whichever one of you designed this page because unf
