The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 49

168 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 49

Something tells me that Flyboy’s driver doesn’t get a whole lot of work…

You can still pre-order copies of The Young Protectors Volume One and other Kickstarter rewards. Watch this video for more information about that.

Also, The Young Protectors penciler Adam DeKraker and I are now at Ahn Con 2016 in Kansas City, MO this weekend and we have Artifice graphic novels and special advance copies of The Young Protectors Volume One for sale. (And we’ll be happy to sign your books!)

Ahn Con is an LGBT comic convention, and this year they are focusing on Heroes and Villains. It’s rare for us to get to a convention in the Midwest U.S. And since we’re on different coasts, this is only the second Con Adam and I have ever done together. (It was so cool getting to hang out and catch up last night! We stayed up until 2:00 A.M. talking The Young Protectors!)  So the experience should be very special all around. We have a fun The Young Protectors panel at noon on Saturday (where we’ll tell our origin stories) and it’d be great to get to talk to readers together, so if you’re nearby, please visit our table and say hi! :)

So! Mitch’s driver will get Cory whatever he needs. How will Cory use this newfound power? Why is it that Flyboy always looks so cute when he’s putting his mask on? (I mean, really, it’s just adorable!) And why is Flyboy grabbing Cory like that in the last panel? Is he going to punch him? Why would he punch him after they’ve been so sweet together? WHY MITCH WHY?!!!! (Oh, the humanity!)

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

(Only one page left before we return to “the main comic”!)

  • Saxon_Brenton

Another kiss? Oh Flyboy, you’re incorrigible.

    • Go you!!

      • Saxon_Brenton

[sketches a bow] Dad came in and asked to see what the tide chart was like. We looked at it, I returned to the webpage and refreshed, and it was just there. So I grabbed it.

        • That’s how you do it!!

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Says the expert…. fritter?

        • Chris Dangerfield

So the tide came in and washed you to the key board and you just “got it.” That sounds as believable as some of Danishes explanations. 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Nice work, Saxon!

    • Chris Dangerfield

      aka: 15

  • Now kiss

    • Jinks!!

      • LOL and this time it was me who hit the wrong button xD

Accidently clicked one of those damn sponsored links that is placed very inconvenient. Had to reload page before I could comment.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I seriously doubt that either of them needs any encouragement. I mean, just look at the expressions on their faces in the last panel.

    • Chris Dangerfield

  • Now kiss!!

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Kiss crazy people everywhere……..

      • I dare you to deny that that wasn’t your first thought after finishing the page

  • Okay, someone get me that card!! I want access to this driver. Heee!

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Access? Is that a euphemism?

  • stickfigurefairytales

Oh, I really wish Mitch would stay long enough to make sure Cory really does go, but I get why he can’t.

  • davefragments

Is that a bit of hesitation I see?

  • syllibub

A punch in the mouth, except Mitch uses lips to punch instead of fists!

    • Chris Dangerfield

I’m willing to be his “punching bag”……….

  • Kate G

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Refresh the page, get the new page…..and I’m beat by everyone else.

Seriously Mitchell, we have to do this again? GO ON AND KISS THE GUY!!!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Oh, I really wish Mitch would stay long enough to make sure Cory really does go, but I get why he can’t.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Wait a second. Ignore the impending kiss in the last panel for just a second. Flyby has a driver. Oh, that’s gonna make Cory feel even more inadequate.

    • Kate G

Well, his parents are wealthy. It would make sense that his parents would have a driver. I’m sure the driver is for both his parents and him (I mean, unless they are Donald Trump wealthy but all we know is his father is a doctor and that usually isn’t enough to get a driver. His mother must also be fairly wealthy too.)

      • Klaus

He did say “my”, not “our”.

        • Kate G

Well, that’s like calling my mom’s and my car “my car” (which I do call the Batmobile that a lot) or Scooby “my horse” and I don’t own him (I just ride him.) It’s this idea of “I use it, it’s mine for however long necessary.” In English, it’s easy to get away with; I’m not sure about others. For half an hour every Wednesday, Scooby is MY HORSE. Whenever I use the Batmobile, it’s MY CAR. Whenever Mitch calls the driver, it’s HIS DRIVER.

I certainly never say “my car” to my mom. Nope. It’s OUR CAR or The Batmobile around my mom. MY CAR when around other people. XD

Is this a purely English/American teenager thing that sometimes rolls over into adulthood?

    • davefragments

Cory is afraid of being look down on and treated badly by the driver.

    • Klaus

Careful with that script! There is a spoiler for the next page at the end!

  • syllibub

This whole side comic has been wonderful, and I’m so happy we got to “meet” Cory because he’s an excellent new character. I love the mix of Cory’s affection for Mitch and his…not quite bitterness, but I guess painful awareness of the huge discrepancy in their respective situations. And Mitch isn’t even doing anything on purpose to make Cory feel that way, there are just everyday aspects of Mitch’s life, like having a driver for godsakes, that he’ll mention offhand and in doing so unintentionally trigger Cory’s feelings of inadequacy. Even bringing up Kyle must have stung — a “cute” fellow superhero that Mitch spends tons of time with, who from an outside perspective must seem to have it infinitely more together than Cory? Ouch.

And I’m so geared up for Chapter 4! I’ve missed you, Team Silver Fox…

    • SofiaT

I think there’s every chance Mitch’s family is really poor. You know, the mother is poor, the father is poor, the driver is poor, the maid is poor, even the butler is poor. And their pool might be a really small one, not even Olympic dimensions.

Jokes aside, I’d be feeling quite inadequate in Cory’s place too. And not just because of the class divide but the fact that Mitch seems to be so damn perfect, it can be quite intimidating being with someone who’s so pure and good and always does the right thing… especially when you’ve had the life experiences and had to make the choices Cory has made.

I hope when Mitch is done saving Kyle and the world, he’ll return home to find Cory waiting for him there, rather that having walked into the sunset alone…

      • After all this saving the world drama, Mitch and Cory are going to kick back and play some nice relaxing competitive video games. Winner gets kissed.

        • Nate

I’m not sure that’s motivation to win, or to play to lose. 😀

      • syllibub

I think Mitch’s household has definitely fallen on hard times — you notice how he only has a single driver instead of four shirtless beefcakes carrying him around in a golden litter? Must have been a difficult adjustment.

I hope Cory does head back to Mitch’s, and that he gets a warm reception from Mitch’s dad so that he feels comfortable staying there.

    • Great to see you here again, syllibub — and with a thoughtful analysis that was much fun for me to read. Glad you’ve enjoyed meeting Cory. 🙂

Won’t be long before you’re back in your wife’s arms again…

      • syllibub

It’s good to be back, thanks Alex!

    • Columbine

That’s a lot more uncommon in the States than Asia isn’t it? The driver thing?

I think you’re 100% with the discrepancy, looking at their faces as they talk the way Mitch keeps smiling as if everything is ok now and he’s fixed it all, while Cory keeps getting this look that just screams ‘you don’t get it’. I feel like there’s a 50:50 chance Cory might run just because he doesn’t want to owe Mitch more or isn’t sure how it would turn out.

      • syllibub

You’re right, having a driver or regular housekeeper is definitely more of an indication of wealth in the States than in other countries.

It’s easy to forget that Mitch is only fifteen and doesn’t really get how hard it can be to accept charity, especially when to Mitch it must seem like he’s offering something completely reasonable, while Cory sees it as something that will put him in enormous debt.

  • Cydney Sabin

  • The kiss is def happening next page, with that pull in how could it not….

  • Mitch has been overwhelmingly adorable the past few pages….

  • SofiaT

I see a jacket being grabbed. Grabbed jackets are always a good idea and an omen of nice things to come.

  • Whoops. I fell asleep again and woke when the tablet slid off my chest and hit my arm. It was a long hard day, so I’ll just go and sleep again before commenting on the page. I had half a line of a comment made when I fell asleep *lol* Can see others now have said a lot of what I had intended to write when the sandman showed up.

Alex, have loads of fun at the con and with Adam. I know how fun it is to get to finally spend personal time with friends you rarely get to meet/see in person.

    • SofiaT

I went to bed to have a nap at 5pm yesterday, ended up waking up at 3.30am. I forced myself to stay in bed till 5am, then got up and started sewing -I was supposed to camp for the first time in ages but I even forgot to have lunch. I’ve now (almost) finished my first Viking apron dress and preparing some spaghetti for a late lunch/early dinner (at past 4pm, I guess it’s both).

    • Thank you, Danish! It’s a lot of fun to get a chance to hang out together. Lots of future strategizing of The Young Protectors going on into the wee hours… 😉

  • T Dibbler

I’m wondering how Mitch and Cory first met and became friends. Were they at school together or something? Even before the whole ‘being forced to live on the streets’ business, I get the impression Cory’s family weren’t the type to just casually have their own drivers, or connections to top surgeons.

    • Columbine

I sort of got the impression this world might well have groups for young kids with powers, the way you can have groups for kids with disabilities/conditions in this one?

      • T Dibbler

        That makes sense.

  • Punkpoemprose

    I sense a smooch!

  • Pinkfeiry

come on, give him another kiss!

  • I have to say, panel six is my fav. The way they’re looking at each other is so real. I can just feel the energy from it. NOW KISS DAMMIT!

    • Nate

Mine is panel 3. Mitch has NEVER looked cuter.

    • Chris Dangerfield

OMG the pressure on young people today to kiss is outrageous. 😀

  • Sapfo

MITCH! I need a hero kiss now! You saved him, you get a kiss!!! And I kind of think that Cory wants to give you kiss. 😀

  • Nate

Oh, for heaven’s sake, Mitch… KISS HIM!

  • bronakopdin

lol I totally get what Cory must feel in panel 2 x’D
fighting to survive for months and now he’s told to call a driver x’DD a driver of someone who is able to fly x’DDD talk about luxury…

but hey Mitch just wants Cory to be comfortable from now on! Immediately! And he also probably wants to make sure that Cory actually arrives at his new home and doesn’t disappear to wherever after this! (Though I doubt Cory would do that)

One more page and hopefully one more passionate kiss and this gem of a sidestory is over… If I wasn’t so hyped to see our main story continue I’d be even more sad! It was a great adventure 😀 Can’t wait to see the boys meet up after all that happened in the main story inbetween!!

  • Safyrah Steel

How adorable… Try and share TYP with others. lets get more people to join this fandom!

  • strangeangel24601

Five bucks says Cory shows up to save the day in the main storyline, shuttled to the scene of the action by Mitch’s driver.

  • TwilightDreamer

Driver…?….maybe I missed something before (or forgot), but is Mitch from a wealthier background or something?
OOOO!! *sits up*….goodbye kiss? goodbye kiss?? Is there going to be a goodbye kiss!?!? 😀

    • Yes he is. Read the last 10 pages again, around page 39, from the time Cory and Mitch meet on the roof. Mitch lives in a mansion, and his dad was able to call in the country’s top surgeon to help Diego. That screams family money.

      • TwilightDreamer

aaaah! *nods* lol, thank you….I knew I’d probably just forgotten, my bad…. ^_^’

  • Fabulous Alien

If the next page isn’t a dozen panels of sweet, romantic kisses, I’m going to be so disappointed…

    • Nate

I’ll settle for one big one. 😉

      • Fabulous Alien

That might also be acceptable, but it has to be a really good one!

        • Nate

I’m sure our masterful creative team can handle that.

  • I have a feeling the next page is going to be hella romantic, and maybe heartbreaking at the same time..

I imagine a big panel with Cory and Mitch kissing, and then perhaps one or two smaller panels where we more or less direct are going to be reminded that Mitch in less than a day from this timeline will just have been blasted down from the skye – so he won’t be back as soon as expected.

Let’s see if this prediction will happen.

… and then I hope Cory will have gone to Mitch’s home, and that Mitch shortly called his parents before the team left for the fight; both for telling them what was happening, because he seems close to them, but also so Cory will know he’ll be away for a while and that’s why he doesn’t contact him.

  • Pikinanou

yeah, he’s gonna punch him… WITH HIS LIPS!!!

    • Chris Dangerfield

I hate it when that happens… DO IT AGAIN!!!!!

  • Doki is done for the year. She just finished the 1000 piece Thomas Kinkade Wizard of Oz puzzle from h*ll.

  • For a few pages I’ve been wondering, if Mitch is supposed to be from the Boston area. One of the areas with rich Bostonian families with family money. There’s a large wealthy area there where more than 1in 4 residents have more than $1mio- often millions -and it’s one of the wealthiest areas in US.

Boston isn’t that far from Connecticut either, so for Mitch to have an earlier internship with the Connecticut Chevaliers would have been close to home. It pretty plausible imo.

    • Klaus
    • Columbine

Does it say something about me that I first read that as ‘I’ve been wondering if Mitch is supposed to be from Botswana’? And then I had at least ten seconds of ‘but Mitch doesn’t look anything like someone from….OOOoooooh!’

  • Britt Colacicco

You cut it off right before the obvious kiss?

    • Mwa ha ha,

      • Chris Dangerfield

I always knew Laampros was YOUR special character. 😀

  • fujoshifanatic

It’s so sweet how Mitch is making sure to take care of Cory before he flies off, giving him the resources to accept his help, and letting him know how happy he is to see him, and hopefully sealing the whole deal with a friendly punch on the lips (is that what they call a love tap?). 😛 Now I know that Mitch has even more to come home to (and worth fighting for!), making the stakes even higher for the battle we’ll soon be returning to!

Hope you’re enjoying Ahn-Con with Adam, Alex! Those late-night strategizing talks about TYP sound like fun, especially if they are over some “inspiring” libations and munchies (my friends and I could come up with some truly creative stuff over various ‘tini concoctions!). EVERYONE needs to know about the awesomeness that is TYP, and I hope this con builds upon the success you have created with Adam and Vero with even more appreciative fans. 😀

    • Klaus

Not only the fate of the world, also Cory.

    • I am enjoying Ahn-Con, fujoshifanatic! Thank you. 🙂 (And no libations for us as we strategize, but there was some authentic Kansas City BBQ!)

      • fujoshifanatic

Mmm, BBQ! Now that’s what I call brain food! 😛

  • Jeldenil

    His glasses got magically repaired!

    • Klaus

He has been home for a change of clothes. This is his offcial Flyboy costume.

    • davefragments

And his clothes are clean and his “driver” (that’s the blue collar word for chauffeur) is waiting. Cory is standing there probably wearing his best unwashed outfit.
It’s a little like “Upstairs, Downstairs.”

      • Chris Dangerfield

Oh pooh. Super heroes. Remember when I went on and on about Kyle’s hair post hell? Hmmmm? PERFECT. Same with body odors and such. When you cause a hurricane that leveled a city block, it leaves you fresh as a daisy and with perfect hair.

That’s just how this stuff works for supers. Trust me. 😀

  • Klaus

What really makes you realise how loaded Mitch’ family is, is the casual way he says “my driver”. He is not boasting “I have ny own driver!” He is kind of forgetting that there are people who do not have drivers.

    • Chris Dangerfield

What? Really? OMG. That is crazy talk. (snort)

  • LauraMoyer

Maybe it’s just me having been in Cory’s situation before, or perhaps it’s me reading too much into the subtext of Cory’s body language over the past few language, paired with the way he has been phrasing and sometimes rephrasing things in their conversation but…

I have this horrible feeling that after Mitch flys off, Cory is going to toss the card away. His world and Mitch’s are so different, and for a fleeting moment we saw him get swept up again, in the idea that maybe they weren’t as far apart as he feared… but then there was the phone call, and I saw reality crash back over him.

I can see it in his eyes, the distance between them once more growing- and not just because of the money, but the mindset. Mitch is a hero. Mitch has illustrated throughout their conversation that he is still an idealist, an optimist, someone who feels they can control the course of fate and destiny as long as he stays true to himself, while Cory…

Cory has enormous powers, but no control. It’s a wonderful reflection of the lack of control he also has in his own life up to this point- in staying “true” to himself, he was abused by his father, forced into horrible situations with a brother who doesn’t have his own life together, much less the means to take care of another. He sees the same darkness as Flyboy, but has long since lost sight of the light in himself.

Yes, he’s made poor choices, but his circumstances that led to those choices were beyond his control. He’s used to disappointment, rejection, and abandonment. He knows how to handle them, knows what to expect and how to survive those things, because the fall isn’t far when you are already so low.

But if he keeps that card…

If he accepts the hope and redemption being offered through simple caring and innocent love, his expectations will begin to climb. And the higher you get, the further you fall when the other shoe drops.

So far, ya’ll have done a great job keeping things real in this comic as far as individuals internalizing emotions and character interactions and reactions…

…but boy, do I hope I’m wrong and this wraps on a sweet “ever-after” note, rather than the reality I’m expecting.

    • Columbine

I sort of have the same feeling but you put it much better.

    • Sarah314159

Yeah, I’m seeing that too. Even if Cory does accept the offer, it’s no simple happy ending. Cory’s face and posture as he looks at that card say it all, his profound discomfort, his fear of being Mitch’s little rescue puppy instead of an equal… Hoping Cory gets to do some awesome ass-kicking in the near future to bring his confidence up.

      • ….When Mitch realized what was going on, he snuck Cory onto the TYP jet…

    • MoonByte

      My thoughts exactly.
The very second that Mitch offered Cory to stay, I was like “Dude… I seriously don’t think that’ll happen. Cory is just not the type for that”.
I mean, even if ignoring the idea that he might be scared of getting dropped:
He probably feels horrible that his crush has to help him. That he can’t get shit done by himself. He will feel like he bothers way too many people.
I guess, he will disappear and even if Mitch finds him again, he will say something like “My brother needs me” instead of being honest that he himself is scared shitless and bothered by how his life goes.

  • Klaus

Alex, I know the answer to your second question above: it is Adam’s doing.

  • davefragments

The Magical Costume Change and its partner-in-crime the Instant Armpit Stink Remover:
This happens in almost every story.
In Jurassic World, Owen Grady douses himself with something petroleum like gasoline to escape the dinosaur. No one ever asks why he stinks of gasoline. One must imagine that he has several pair of those blue shirts and dark vests just ready at hand. The two kids jump off the cliff and crawl through the mud and almost all of that brown-ness magically disappears from their clothing. And Bryce Dallas Howard runs through the jungle and all over the park in high heels and never breaks a heel — even when she summons the Tyrannosaurus. She is still pretty and well coifed… That and her white outfit never seems to show any sweat stains on a tropical island.
That’s also like 2005’s King Kong where Naomi Watts runs several block in New York City and climbs the Empire State Building in high heels that magically never break.
In fact, the only recent movie that has ever acknowledged “dirt” is The Martian. Where Watney admits to not having a shower in a year and kind of apologizes for it.

    • *lol* I wouldn’t call this one a magical one though. Mitch simply went home and changed his clothes before going back to the hospital. He’s in a different suit here. His normal suit.

    • KatKaleen

You know what happens when you don’t shower for a year? Pretty much nothing. Human bodies are self-cleaning.

      • davefragments

        Pretty much. Yeah. I agree.
However, both movies and The Martian in book format made a point of it.

      • LimpBiskit

Then why do people who don’t bathe have such a distinctive odor..?

        • There’s some who wash themself with a cloth some places daily or if/when needed, but who doesn’t shower. I’ve read about some of these people. The trick is to wash where you sweat daily, and rest after need, there won’t be much smell. There’s an elderly man here in Denmark who hasn’t taken an actual shower for years, only the daily wash with water, and he doesn’t smell.
Also not to use a deo or perfume, since regular use of that actually change the skin chemistry and can make your pits/skin smell more. Washing your armpits with water daily, no soap, is enough. If using soap then a mild non-perfume one.

The non-deo thing I do myself. I use it very rarely. The first week or two after you stop to use deo (daily) there might be a feeling of a little more smell than usual, because the natural bacterial balance regulate itself. Only heavy sweaters should even use an anti-persperant deo. Others don’t need to use more than a regular deo if they use one.

        • KatKaleen

Okay, I gotta admit that I don’t have a first-hand experience, my sister is a nurse and she told me that. She worked for a “mobile care” company (not sure if that’s what it’s called in English) where she drove to elderly people’s homes to help them with washing and dressing. Now, most people are very reluctant to seek help with these things, so more often than not, relatives would hire them. She’s seen some crusty old-people skin, but only a few of them smelled at all.

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

Most in the States call it “In Home Care” or “Visiting Nurses”……The first helps the patient with needed things bathing grooming , in some cases dressing……the second is more taking vitals…..heart, blood pressure etc. My Mom had both at the end.

    • Columbine

Metal heels may be? 😛 It is an actual thing. The only heels I actually wear are solid steel, I think it’d take quite a bit to break em. My feet would probably give out first.

      • davefragments

I can definitively say that I’ve never worn high heels.
After Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, I see those incongruities.
Also, I lived in New York City the summer I was nineteen and I couldn’t run five or ten long blocks and not nearly pass out from the exertion. They are long blocks.

        • Chris Dangerfield

Well, you know they say that Ginger did everything Fred did… just backwards… and in high heels. Wheeeeeeee…

  • Jason Moon

Maybe the driver has a thing for waifs and strays…

  • Mary Klemzak

Wahh that grab! One more kiss. Or two. Or seven.

    • Klaus

      A teammate is in danger.

      • KatKaleen

Just one more… One kiss goodbye. I insist!

  • KatKaleen

    I think I love Mitch’s parents.
“Hey guys, I can fly!” “Uhm… okay.”
“Hey guys, I think I’m gay.” “Okay.”
“Hey guys, there’s a guy I like and he’s homeless so I thought he can just come and live with us.” “…Okay…”

    • Klaus

“My parents always liked you,” he says to Cory. It is still far from a given that they would let him live in their house.

      • KatKaleen

I think they will. Mitch wouldn’t make that offer if he had any doubts about whether or not his parents are okay with it.

        • Klaus

Indeed they will. Mitch has already asled them.

What I meant was: your point still stands. Even though Mitch’s parents knew him three years ago, it still shows that they are great people that they will let him live in their house.

          • Michael

Not forgetting that they already pulled some major strings to get “the top surgeon in the country” (pg. 39) flown in to operate on the friend of their son’s childhood friend.

          • Klaus

            Actually Diego is Cory’s brother.

          • Michael

Actually brother, or “brother from another mother”? On page 40, Cory says “So about a year ago I took off. Found Diego. And he’s been looking after me”.

So really, just a friend who he became close to for survival reasons.

          • Klaus

On page 10, Mitch recognizes Cory’s brother Diego from pictures.

          • Michael

Good point. I guess it was one hell of a coincidence for them to find each other on the streets, then, if they had left at different times.

    • Sarah314159

Yeah… Getting a good picture of how Mitch turned out so well-adjusted and decent.

  • Earl Patterson

    Next page – KISS!!!

  • Alt+F7

Awww, this comic is getting sweeter and sweeter every week. Just in time for Platinum Priestess to unleash the powers of hell.

  • Cman65

He is younger, don’t feel the need to hide, has had a “kiss” and his boyfriend is not a bad guy. Flyboy has his act togever a lot better than Redhot, but Red does have a great butt

    • Omar Cantu

True but Kyle and Mitch are so different in how their powers interact with their sexuality that it is not a fair comparison.

      • KatKaleen

True. Mitch can snuggle whomever he likes without fear of setting the house ablaze. O_O” Oh, Kyle, we’ll find someone for you…

      • Tyler Griffin

not to mention the questions of privilege from a wealthy upbringing. Not to say that wealth equals acceptance, but that it’s more likely that Mitch is much more well adjusted and confident than a foster kid/adoptee

  • Justin White

is he going to disappear again

  • T-T * comfort hug* RIP Nubia

    • fujoshifanatic

Thank you…I had to wait until my parents, who witnessed the whole traumatizing thing, calmed down enough to go to bed…*crumples in a little puddle and sobs*

I am so sorry… I know exactly how scary it is when you have no idea that your furry baby is sick, and all of a sudden something’s WRONG.

Positive thoughts to you and yours. RIP Nubia.

  • Danul Patterson

I’ve a rather snaking suspicion that once our young and nostalgic Galahad takes to his gilded chariot and flies off into the moon-set it spells the end of this mésalliance. I think Mitchell is sensing this too and this seemingly ultimate bisou, that I expect he’s about to freely give Cory, is his way of making sure the Cory actually does go along with his plan and awaits his return to the estate.

And yet, part of me is hoping that it’s Cory whom comes to the aid of our incapacitated heroes, in this their eleventh hour, and thwarts this seemingly malevolent act that the Dastardly Duo has cooked up. (Yet, their plan must see fruition, for the greater good of the multiverse. which begs the question, can the multiverse be save by some other means?) (Where’s a Mr. Kent-esque character to turn back time with you need one, or a Kitty Pryde, for that matter?)

  • I’m so sorry. Losing our furry family is so hard. (Hugs)

  • I’m very sorry for your loss, fujoshifanatic. That’s awful. I’m sending you big hugs.

  • So very sorry to hear this. RIP to little Nubia.

  • Klaus

    Sorry to hear it.

I didn’t win the Powerball but I take consolation in the fact that no one else did either.

  • Tyler Griffin

oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.

  • davefragments

    So sorry to hear.

Last panel looks sweet…….lead in to “one last kiss before I go”?

    • Brendon Bradley

That was the feel I got from it, too. So it pissed me off that it was the last panel, because it doesn’t so much look like he’s asking as getting ready to take xD

  • Mir

I could not figure out why Cory’s design made me uncomfortable ’till it finally hit me from the last panel; he looks like the spitting image of my childhood friend and I keep associating him with Cory…lmao. I swear I wish I had a picture they look exactly alike.

  • Chris Dangerfield

    omg… all sympathies!

  • Chris Dangerfield

    I knew you’d understand…

  • Zeruk

Haha! Darn I saw the new ad, and got excited! 🙂

    • One more page in this, and we return to the main story.

  • Kate G

*hugs* I too have lost a pet suddenly and it’s quite traumatizing. It gets easier over time, but it never goes away. I still have to poke Zena awake when she gets too quiet and still.

  • Shiny Gwilly

for real though, bro, for real
they’re both just so cute, they’re literally made for each other, their cuteness will overwhelm the entire world, no one will be able to surpass them and their adorable little faces
the next page will be sad and exciting, sad that this little story is coming to an end, but exciting cuz soon we will return to the present with all our heroes!

Looking at the last panel and this story in total, what strikes me the most is Mitch’s confidence. He is smooth and sure of himself, no self-consciousness or shyness in his actions.

He doesn’t act like a 15yo boy, he acts like someone much more comfortable in their own skin than a teenage kid usually is (I think the very definition of a teenager is someone not yet comfortable in their own skin: see Kyle).

And that usually goes double for a teenager with an alternate sexuality in a heteronormal society.

I’ve come to believe that he’s “the kid” in the YP gang because they treat him like a kid. We’ve seen him in the main story making mistakes, at time acting curious, somewhat childish or even unsure but reading this story makes me wonder how much of that is his own personality and how much is the rest of the team’s influence on him. Because when he’s on his own… damn! He really shines!

I also really do feel for him. Considering Mitch appears to be more mature than both Kyle and Paul, being treated like the baby of the group must be very frustrating.

    • Mitch is the Precious. I think he might let them see what they expect to see.

Though it does kind of make me wonder just how Mitch was raised, because he doesn’t act like the typical spoiled rich kid. I know that discovering super powers would influence that, but that would not explain all of it…

    • Michael

It’s true that we do subconsciously take on different roles when in different groups, maybe the expectations (& power/authority gap between older and younger members, exacerbated by Gordon’s overbearing personality) of the team are making Mitch act more like a teenager than he would in the presence of similar-aged or younger kids or by himself.

I’m sorry for your loss, fujo.

I know how much it hurts when your four-legged friend dies. *hugs*

I’m surprised there are no campers today. It IS page day, is it not?

    • Saxon_Brenton

Lurking around. Goofing off. Listening to podcasts…

      • reading fanfic and listen to Bowie

        • Michael

Fair enough. It’s 41*C here today (104*F) and dry, so I’m staying indoors.

          • 31*F and clear skies, guess I could stargaze?

          • Saxon_Brenton

Just over 30*C here, but I’m still on summer hols at the beach. There’s no air conditioning, but there’s a delicious beach breeze.
Forgive me if I’m misremembering Michal, but IIRC you were up in Queensland around Townsville?

          • Michael

No, I’m further south. No, further than that. if you reach Tasmania, you’ve gone too far and have to take a ferry back north. 😛

  • davefragments

I almost missed the camping and I still am not ready with the computer…

Patreon rumbles, too. See you on page 60.
