Unless something happens to him (possible, but hopefully not true), I imagine it’s a combination of Mitch protecting him and the fact that the YP group were coordinating with the army iirc. If he’s not able to join such a group, for any reason, or if he’s in a different one, it would probably be pretty hard to get the government to consent to him going (although, if there is military/government involvement, I’m unsure why they wouldn’t also send adult supers).

      • Klaus

The adult supers are out of town. Way out of town.

    • But we have just witnessed how untrained he is. Honestly, I wouldn’t want him at that fight (even if Amanda know about him by this time).

One thing is that half/most of the YP team are rejects from other teams, but they’ve been trained by/with Amanda and Spooky. They’ve been trained to use their powers.
We have seen that Cory isn’t sure how his powers work; with what force. I certainly wouldn’t want Cory going into fugue tornado again.
He could do more damage than good at a fight scene, unless he underwent a fast change in control – and that again would mean some knowledge and cleared acceptance of him from either Amanda or another team.

Would still be too soon for him to join a battle IMO, if he’s on any team at all. I think several meta people never make it onto one, either rejected or they didn’t even try.

Okay there really isn’t much to note on this page except…….. KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS KISS and moar KISSING. I guess THAT. IS. ENOUGH. to say thank you. So, thank you, you three wonder workers, for such a wonderful page. So Kissalicious!

I do want to mention just a few things that really struck me as noteworthy and special.

Alex, I know there’s been a lot of back-chat (and you’ve been most gracious about it) from so many of us who have missed the main story and the cliff hanger we’ve all been hanging on. That is nothing but kudos to you for having a main story that will bring everyone back in a New York minute. Bravo.

However, this lovely little story gave us such a clear, smart and worthy look at a very special character within the main story. I know, for myself, that I’m going to return to that main story with an entirely different dynamic and Mitch is going to be much more important to me, even if the main story is not HIS story. THIS story shows what a huge-hearted and special man Mitch is and will definitely become.

I’d also like to point out that for anyone who thought this slow build to this special moment wasn’t getting to THE KISS fast enough… I suspect that when the book is in our hands we are going to find the pacing of this story and these pages are just right. I’m guessing, but I feel it. I suspect I’ll be re-reading this story many many times. Magic, action, peril, heroics, heartbreak and then the sweetness of young love. I think this is going to be a huge add to a remarkable graphic novel.

Panel #1: Adam you really out-did yourself with this pose. The delightfully sweet shock in Mitch’s wide opened eyes. I feel the ‘motion’ in this grab and kiss. Alex, you get huge points for being your usual tricksy self and for leading us up to this with all of Cory’s uncertainty, and then letting him GO FOR THE THING that he’s clearly dreamed of for three years.

Sorry pops, “the gay” isn’t something you can beat out of us. Not when there is a chance for us to find the lips of “our Mitch” in the world. It goes without saying Vero that your shading on faces and fabrics, the beauty of the night skies, the textures and backgrounds in general never falters. Truly beautiful.

Panel #2: I love that, just like life, when the kiss is GOOD. Surprise disappears quick and look at our Mitch go for it. He hasn’t forgotten that moment of three years ago either. This is the getting of something one longs for. I love how you three worked together to really make it show.

Panel #3: Yeah, Cory. I’d say that too. Adam I love his expression. That alone says so clearly that he wasn’t prepared for “THAT GOOD.” His face is so adorable. [DOKI – please squee for me… thank yew!] 😀

Panel #4: That’s our Mitch. Adorbs. Unfailingly honest and look at how happy that face is. Sorta makes all those heroics worth it, doesn’t it Mitch? I love that little bit of uncertainty. I’ve heard that some women think that men who want reassurance about their love-skills are a bit weenie, but (what can I say) it’s true. Human uncertainty is what it is.

If one truly cares about the other person, then they want to know “it” was okay (or better) and kissing is no different. You can see how Mitch’s expression covers both feelings: his own pleasure at the sweetness of this moment and his hope that Cory is just as good with it. It’s a complex and great expression and both Adam and Vero really get the big applause for this complex subtlety.

Panel #5: I love love love this long horizontal beauty shot. Their poses are so perfect. That aggressive hesitant moment. On one hand you know they both want to grab and go for a second lip-lock, yet they are friends and so hold, needing to be sure they’re really all good.

Then the statement that the kiss got better (heck they’re older) is so sweetly. Then Mitch’s hesitance, which I read as NOT doubt, but that ability we all have to grow into to put personal things into words. Boy is that hard. “You kiss good.” “I’m gay.” “I really like you.” Infinity.

All those words that make us vulnerable, but are really about true inner strength. The more personal the words, the harder they are to learn to say… and these two are still so young. And that confusingly makes some things easier and others harder. Life.

If only I could have had a clue in my teens how to be honest like this about who I was and what I wanted more than anything in the world.

Today is a different world, but these most personal moments are no easier now then they ever were. It’s why romance is so attractive in art. It’s what we all wish we could do and hope will happen for us. And, you know? It just might. That made this page particularly endearing and now one of my favorites.

Kyle deserved this. (grump) I’m going to hope until the last page he find his version of us. They’re all wonderful characters, but I do long for him. I think a hell-date counts as paying your dues. Hope!

Alex, Adam and Veronica — you three do special things for us repeatedly, and I can’t thank you enough. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… the fact that you give us all this purely HUMAN emotion and you do it so gracefully within the LGBTQIA world, makes it truly special and unique. So, again, I’ll say THANK YOU!

    • Thank you, Chris. Just as this is a special page for you, this is a special comment for me, Adam, and Vero. You totally clued into all the subtleties we were going for on this page — from the “aggressive-hesitant” moment in the last panel, to what this kiss means to both of them, to noticing how Cory just GOES FOR THE THING, and finally (or I should say firstly) pointing out what I was trying to accomplish with this.

Yes, this was a chance for us to get to know Flyboy a bit better, which will hopefully help readers’ enjoyment of the “main story.” But it was also an attempt on my part to capture everything I’m trying to accomplish with The Young Protectors in a single, standalone story. When writing a very long arc, like Engaging the Enemy, I think sometimes the forest can get lost for all the trees. But with this, I was really trying to create a singular, pure experience for readers — the chance to enjoy a real superhero story with fun action and complex characters, and heroes who just happen to be gay. Where their “gayness” doesn’t define them but isn’t white-washed, where it’s still very important to who they are and what they want in life, just as love and romance is important to so many of us, regardless of orientation.

One of my goals is to offer to the rest of us, the same kind of high-quality adventure and romance stories cis, white, straight boys have gotten to enjoy for so long. And in many ways, the Flyboy Bonus Comic is my current best effort to take what I’ve learned on The Young Protectors over the past three years and put it to use for that purpose.

Whether I succeeded at that or not here, I’ll leave to y’all to decide. But that was my guiding principle as I wrote this bonus comic. And it’s been a great pleasure to work with Adam and Vero, taking advantage of how we’ve grown together and their epic skills, in realizing that vision.

      • Klaus

I would say that you did succeed.

Yes, it is Italian. Generally it’s Rigatoni with red sauce served with meatballs.
I have made Linguini with clam and mushroom sauce.
Pasta Primavera can be vegetarian but if it had a meat side dish, I would say that should be Chicken Parmigiana and not beef-based.
I can also make red sauce with stuffed Calamari and that is served over angel hair pasta.
Mac and Cheese is always elbow macaroni.
Pizza, however, isn’t Italian. It was invented in New York City for the visit of Princess Margherita of Italy many years ago.

        • Klaus

That version is new to me. The story you usually hear is that the queen was visiting Napoli. Actually the pizza is at the very least almost 1000 years older than that, though the pizza Margherita may indeed have been invented in Napoli in 1889.

      • Chris Dangerfield

I believe that pasta with or without meatballs in all their myriad forms are the deities’ own food. It’s very hard to ruin them and they saved my life repeatedly in university.

  • did he get on his tip toes for that kiss awww

    • Journey Saintel

      D’awww! <3

    • Chris Dangerfield

Heck, I’d lean down for a kiss from a boy that cute… in fact… I DO. Regularly.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Saturday morning, back from a bit of shopping, made a salad bun for a late breakfast, time for camping.
Important question: Will Cory be distracted by the kissing? I mean, only two pages ago Cory was adamantly insisting that he didn’t want to take Flyboy’s ‘charity’. Then the topic of “in love crazy” was mentioned, and reminiscences about old romances started, and suddenly Cory gets a reminder of how good a kisser Flyboy is, and everybody on the discussion board goes squee. But how will that kiss affect Cory’s reaction to Flyboy’s offer to help?

    • Chris Dangerfield

      What is a “salad bun?”

      • Saxon_Brenton

In this case like a salad sandwich, only instead of using pre-sliced bread, I brought some freshly baked crunchy-crusted buns, and then just threw whatever random salad filling I had lying around in the refrigerator.

        • Chris Dangerfield

          nom nom nom…

  • davefragments

    Dear Alex.
Will there be a page posted on Christmas Day (next Friday)?

    • Chris Dangerfield

When has this group ever allowed a high holy day interfere with the publication of a page. Heathens of my favorite kind. Love ’em.

    • Oh yeah. You guys do the x-mas thing of friday mostly. I was just happy there wouldn’t be a page on x-mas itself this year, meaning I didn’t have a lunch to make it to after the page was up.

      • davefragments

My family always opened gifts after Midnight Mass because I was an altar boy and always had to be an acolyte. Only lately do I do it on Christmas Day which is the 25th. There is no Boxing Day here.
And buy Jewish friends put up a Chanukah Bush and give their kids gifts on the 25th too.

  • Justin White

‘.’? so what now, i wounder

  • Chris Dangerfield

Well they’re 15, so I could see a page chock full of snogging, but I doubt clothes are going to be removed (see Alex is just very firm about these issues, lol). So, other than logistics of keeping Cory well, I have no idea what to expect next. Darn.

    • davefragments

Besides, They are on the roof of a hospital and I don’t think it is summer and warm enough for a “not-so-well-dressed” semi-private frolic.

  • Chris Dangerfield

If I didn’t know you at all by now, I’d suspect that you’d been attacked by the non sequitur fairy… but nope. 😀

    • davefragments

It is actually called “the Oldies Room” because of the rather rich and old playlist of “accordion standards.”
There was a while I wanted to played Hammond organ for a living. However, chemical engineers make much more money than nightclubs, weddings, and birthday party gigs.

      • Chris Dangerfield

And ‘organist’ have to use hands AND feet. Tough stuff… LOL.

        • davefragments

          And a Leslie

  • Chris Dangerfield

Are the smores here yet? Doth the Admiral have muffiins? I’m willing to be a Brat if I can get muffins lobbest at me… 😀

    • The s’mores are always here on the table behind you to the left. *pops Chris on the head with a muffin as he runs to the s’mores*

      • Chris Dangerfield

Camping got so much better when it started being catered!

True! When those of you who worry about the value of being a Patreon, worry, just remember CATERING!!!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Mmm, s’mores…

  • Chris Dangerfield

    Let the post-kiss camping commence!

  • Today was a long long day. I went to the optometrist to get my eyes checked. Eyes all healthy, but I do need new glasses for sure. Don’t need reading glasses just yet (Yay!). Took quite a bit out of me. It was fine until it got a little crowded. Have I mention I’m not fond of crowds? It’s kinda hard to pick out glasses when there are a bunch of people milling around.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Okay what’s clearer… 2 or 3… 3 or 4…. ? WTF I can’t… and I HATE you!(sorry, me at the eye-doctor)

      • There were a couple of those. Which is clearer… Uh… Can I see the other one again. HA!

      • I hate the ‘which one shows the dot the clearest’. Uuuh, I have a slightly lazy eye which makes focusing on a small dot hard either way, so can’t always tell >.<

  • Nate

Don’t have the energy to camp tonight. Been a tough week. But I look forward to seeing more of The Cute™ and kissing tomorrow morning. 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I hope you sleep well!

      • Nate

I didn’t, but thanks for the sentiment. *hug*

  • stickfigurefairytales

Back from seeing Star Wars! Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for anyone.

    • Was it good? That’s not spoilery right?

      • stickfigurefairytales

        It was indeed good!

        • YAY!!

          • stickfigurefairytales

SO MUCH better than the prequels.

          • davefragments

I made it to Jar Jar in Episode 1 and never went to 2 or 3 after that.

          • Well you missed George Lucas turning Padme completely useless by ep. 3

          • davefragments

Episode 3 was always going to have a dark ending thanks to the rise of Darth Vader. I always wondered about why George Lucas ever did three prequels. The ending of that trilogy was always bleak.

          • True. BUT! Padme started out so kick-ass and with each movie became weak and just well useless. I mean, she basically (spoiler) died of a broken heart. Sigh.

          • davefragments

            I didn’t watch 2 and 3 that closely.
I was so disgusted and truly horrified by Jar Jar BInks that I only watched 2 and 3 under duress from friends.

          • I am sorry. It really wasn’t something that anyone should have really endured. Have you seen the theory of Jar Jar being a Sith Lord?

          • davefragments

            Yes. I though it silly.
I saw “shuck and jive”, “minstrel shows” in Jar Jar every time he was onscreen. It wasn’t pleasant watching at all. It’s take me years to figure out why I saw that but I’ve figured it out and there is one incident in my past that Jar Jar pushes the buttons on.

          • Other than he sounds like a complete and utter baffoon set there to be a stupid obstacle?

          • davefragments

            That too.

          • Kate G

Well, in Episode II she was kind of a bad ass, I mean, she was on that planet and got herself out of it by getting on a seriously dangerous animal, running through all of the machinery and what not. That was some major badassery.

It was the third movie that bothered me most. She wasn’t ever one to let things happen without a fight. She was pregnant, but she still would have found a way to do things; that’s what fighters do. She would have fought tooth and nail to live too. It would have taken Anakin hurting her BADLY to kill her spirit. He hurt her pretty badly with strangling her, then throwing her and we know her energy was being depleted from two Force-strong kids, but she would have fought, I think.

It’s definitely the third movie that bugs me, plot wise. Jar Jar never really bothered me as much as others. It’s the ones that are seen as “stupid” that end up creating havoc and making situations worse. That’s what he did when he became the replacement senator. I didn’t see him as a metaphor for “disabled people” or “black people” as some people see him as. The Gungans weren’t really a smart species to begin with, honestly!

          • That was my biggest problem with the third movie, the portrayal of Padme. She never let anyone do anything that she couldn’t do and then she just became nothing but a heaping puddle of useless.

My other problem was well the story with how quick Anni became bad and just went on a killing spree. Really? Well that and the acting, a lot of it was bad.

          • Kate G

Hayden was a newbie back then (and where did Hayden go, huh? He’s like, Poof! gone.) I think Natalie (who is so natural an actor) had a hard time just being immobile because her characters aren’t ever that way. She plays very active, intelligent women. Being so still isn’t in her MO. That’s where most of it is, honestly.

Natalie Portman could have done a lot of good things had Padme been able to be that active and intelligent politician that she was in I and II. So, she’s pregnant. Whoop de fucking doo. Did no one notice the wedding ring at all during her engagements or something? Always one of those plot holes that bothered me.

The whole “Anni going dark” quickly wasn’t all that quick honestly. Look at Episode I. The notes of darkness are there in how he hates Sebulba and his slaver with an intense passion. That never truly went away. That’s why Yoda specifically says, “Do not train this one. He has darkness in his soul.” He has an intense hatred to those who hurt his family. It’s his family he cannot cut off his emotions from and Jedi are not supposed to have family; everyone and everything is family to them.

          • I read a fan theory recently that kinda blew my mind, in how in a weird ways it made a lot of plausible sense.
On how Jar Jar was actually supposed to be revealed as a bad-dude character, but he was so hated by fans after movie one (and two) that George Lucas might have changed his mind and re-written some of the manuscript to prevent this sudden revelation.
It’s probably just a theory, but how it was accounted for made it give a lot of sense to how Jar Jar wasn’t such a goof afterall. I actually wish it’s a true fan theory, because it would have given the movies SUCH a wicked twist – and it would have been a better 3rd movie imo.

          • davefragments

I made a comment below. It took me years to figure out why but there is one particular incident in my past that pushes the worst buttons of racism and Jar Jar triggers the memories of that.
I thought that was a silly theory BTW.

          • Saxon_Brenton

[snicker] Yes, the ‘Jar Jar is secretly a machiavellian manipulator’ theory is fun, but personally I preferred another one I read recently that proved that R2D2 was in fact secretly a sith lord manipulating events. Ah me, far too many behind-the-scenes masterminds…

          • davefragments

There’s too many of these “conspiracy” theories of this person is secretly this and that person is secretly that. When I read a book or watch a movie, I try to give the writer the benefit of the doubt and not develop intricate Sherlockian theories.

          • Well considering how kinda awful the prequels were, can you blame them? At least in this instance? 🙂

          • davefragments

No. Lost of the internet likes to do that. They have fun.

          • Double Yay!

    • Saxon_Brenton

Still waiting to see it. I had been informed by my sister that the whole family would be going as a group just after Xmas once we’d all arrived up the coast for summer holidays. Which means probably driving across to Nambucca Heads on boxing day.

    • I’m hoping to be able to see it before x-mas, but probably have to wait until just after that. Need to see what’s left of money when the last presents are bought.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I think I’m going to have to bow out early from camping – I can’t keep my eyes open any more. Have a good night/morning/whatever your respective time zone is, everybody!

  • Heeey.. I made it to a camp. Thought I might be late 🙂
Had every intention of making an early attendance tonight, but that was until I ended up being awake till around 3-ish hours ago – being up and watching a Batman cartoon movie on late tv while reading one of my new obsessions; The Cut & Run series by Abigail Roux (first 4 books co-written with Madeleine Urban).

Pleaaaase tell me I’m not the only one here who’s read these jewels?
I need someone to fan about Ty and Grady with.

  • Ugh! I’m on my computer for the first time in around a week. So many things that wants to update, making it slow now that I’m finally on. It took 12mins just to log on, because of a buttload of figurations after updates that happened last time i logged on.
Need to use my computer more so it works on camp nights where I’m not checking from the tablet 😉

  • *Waves at everyone* dropping in quick before running away as I’m up to my eyeballs in writing deadlines which is why you haven’t seen me regularity in a while 😉

    Have fun camping everyone!!!

    • Don’t work too hard!

    • Good luck with the writing. I used to hate this time of year when I studied. So much writing, so many projects to make because exam project deadline was just after New Year.

  • Kate G

*singing* IIIIIIIIIIIIII made it toooooo caaaaaaaamp.

I’m freezing my butt off because gee, Mother Nature had to bring a cold snap to we Great LAkes people but I am here, in my house, wearing 3 layers and gloves!

    • davefragments

When your butt falls off, don’t lose track of it. Spring will come and you can glue it on… After all, you can’t go through spring and summer without a butt…

      • Kate G

HA HA! I am always cold. The joys of lupus with Reynaud’s. I am not warm until it hits about 75…80? But I am definitely cold today. I busted out the 300 denier tights today. XD

OR to screw up Elsa’s line “The cold always bothered me anyway.” LOL.

        • davefragments

I understand. I have an afghan over my feet when I’m in bed because they are always cold.

          • Kate G

HA ha ha. My bed looks like I should live in the North Pole. Piles of blankets. I have the thin sheet, electric blanket, quilt and then the fleece blanket on top. Occasionally that’s not warm enough and another fleece gets thrown over that one and sometimes a wolf blanket that’s sort of wool-like but isn’t.

My mom has two blankets. I question if she’s human and not a zombie.

          • I have two quilts and a faux snuggy fuzzy thing that I have under the top sheet so it’s right against me. Then I have long underwear and flannel Pj’s.

          • Kate G

I think my mom is a zombie. LOL.

          • Some people are just warmer. 😐

          • Kate G

HA HA. She does run warm. I call her a zombie just because I can. She calls me a zombie because my feet and hands are always like ice.

          • I’m usually too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter. But I do have some thermal regulation. I mean after a hot shower or bath I can maintain a bit, but my mom has no such luck. Nope she’s just cold.

And then I always seem to choose the coldest room in the house during winter as well the hottest room during the summer. Sigh.

          • Kate G

My room is above the garage. Frozen in winter; hot in summer. But, I am always some range of cold because it’s cold outside from October to April (sometimes May) and the air conditioning is going full blast the other moths. LOL. I can’t win in the blue hands and feet department.

          • Yeah not fun.

  • Connor

I made it to camp! Yay! Just got back from the ballet.

    • Kate G

OOOOOOOOOOOO, the ballet! I wasn’t able to make it to the ballet this year. I’m going to watch one of the many versions of The Nutcracker on YT.

  • Journey Saintel

    This is my first camp!

    • Hi there, and welcome 🙂

    • Connor

      Hi!

    • Welcome Journey!!

    • Saxon_Brenton

Welcome. Are you in the northern hemisphere or the southern? Hot foods are on the virtual table over there, while cold foods are over the virtual table over here.

      • Journey Saintel

Ha! I’ve always loved virtual food, thanks. And I’ll be representing the Northern Hemisphere. 🙂

    • Kate G

Welcome to the Camp of Woolfs (I have forgotten what we call ourselves. Danish?) Please make yourself comfortable.

      • We’re the Woolfpack 🙂

        • Kate G

I managed to get the Woolf bit. XD

  • Sapfo

    Good morning Good people!
I got some hot coffee, the only drink I will drink when looking at cute kissing action ^^

    • Morning, sweet berry.

      • Sapfo

Good morning Mods! Is all clear for the sailing?

        • It will be in about two weeks when I get my new glasses!

          • Sapfo

So in other words, this is the best time to make mischief without you knowing? Not asking for myself, asking for a friend…. you know <..>

          • Well I can see right in front of me. You’d have to do it at a distance. 😛

          • Sapfo

I will make sure of that… I mean my friend will be in the distance….. I mean no mischief going at all XD

          • HA! I’ll keep that in mind.

    • Morning Ms. Strawberry.

      • Sapfo

Just so happy to be awake for a camping (not able to join so often these days ;_;)

        • There has definitely been a lack of strawberry around here! So happy you made it!

          • Sapfo

You know real life make jams of strawberries. It is a hard life 😉

          • But still sweet. 😀

  • Sapfo

And to day on this day (or on a day very close to this day) A Gryphon was born. Happy birthday Gryphongirl 😀

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Whoa-ho! Happy birthday Gryphongirl.

    • I was going to wait a little, since I think there might be a couple hours till the time yet in US timezone, but yes..

Happy birthday Gryphon! Since it’s saturday here now 🙂

    • Dammit! Where is my brain today. I was just discussing this with Mr. Dangerfield.

      HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRYPHON!!
