The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 39

152 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 39

Don’t beat around the bush, Mitch. Just ask him whatever’s on your mind…

In Patreon news, $5+ Patrons are already going to get to download a hot, nude Annihilator pin-up at the end of this month. And this week I shared a sweet and sexy pin-up of Flyboy’s very first kiss — and it’s with Cory!

And people are loving it! Comments have included: ‘This is just perfect. So sweet and innocent and spontaneous. Such a sweet expression of young love that it just makes me want to hug someone.”, “I absolutely plan to make this my Desktop BG”, “Okay, that’s as adorbs as it gets. I want to be 15 again… IF I can be Mitch (with a Cory)”, “While the art is, of course, of the highest quality, I find myself fascinated by the shading on their bodies, especially that one spot on Cory’s neck (go there next, Mitch! 😉 ) Truly exceptional work all around.”

Here’s a sneak preview of that:

AMW_Comics_TYP-ETE-1stTime-Card-FLYBOY_400px

Who’s going to clean up that popcorn?

Folks who join right now will get to enjoy this kiss and be able to download the full wallpaper for this. (They’ll also get to download that fully nude Annihilator pin-up after payments clear at the end of the month.)

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! Did Mitch just say he told his Dad what happened? What did Cory think their next meeting was going to be like? And what was he doing with Diego?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

P.S. Happy birthday wishes to long-time reader Klaus! Thank you for being such an awesome member of our community! 🙂

  • Matt Lovinski

First and ooo I like where this is going

    • Tyler Griffin

Congrats. Is this your first Virgin?

      • Matt Lovinski

Pretty much xD always late for something

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Congratulations!

    • Congrats and welcome to the V club! Take good care of your first TYP V.

    • We have a new hunter in the house 🙂

  • Yes what are you doing out there with Diego, Cory?

  • Oh! Happy Birthday Klaus!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Yes, Happy Birthday, Klaus!

    • davefragments

      Happy Birthday and many more

    • Happy Birthday to you
      Happy Birthday to you
      Happy Birthday dear Klaus
      Happy Birthday to you

    • Sapfo

      Happy birthday Klaus

    • Klaus

Thank you, everybody. I am not yet as old as Duncan, but I probably will be before this is over.

      • purplefoxglove

        Happy belated ^_^

  • Tyler Griffin

    Day-um, that was really early!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Not the earliest it’s ever been, but definitely on the early side.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Wow, I wonder what Mitch’s dad does for a living.

  • You’re still kids, Cory.

    • Tyler Griffin

You know that you’re doomed when you watch a Disney Movie and realize immediately that the parents aren’t actually being unreasonable 😛

  • davefragments

Gee, I’m late. I’ll blame it on Andrea Bocellis singing “Pour Una Cabeza” …

The page is a good close to this chapter. It brings it all together and hints at the possibilities that might be.

  • Michael

Somehow I think Cory is going to regret asking that question. Sure, as a hero-in-training he’s probably seen his share of tragedy and suffering, but not yet to someone he cares about.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      You meant Mitch there, right?

      • Michael

        yeah, I meant Mitch. D’oh.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Haha, no worries.

  • Frank_821

Oh yes. This all is resonating very nicely and ties in perfectly with his admission to Kyle last year

  • Mitch is loaded? O.O You have to have some serious money to be able to call in a top surgeon….

    ….or be very well connected

    • 🙂

    • Klaus

How did he and Cory meet? Diego considers robbery the only realistic way to wealth, and Cory does not object. Not likely members of Mitch’s social circle. Did they meet through some super kids event? That would mean that ExSec knows at least something about Cory’s powers.

      • School isn’t too unrealistic an option.

        • Tyler Griffin

If his parents are that well connected, I somehow doubt that Mitch was a public school kid, and unless there was a scholarship program Corey doesn’t seem like his family could swing a uppity private education. I’m gonna have to side with Klaus here, it’s more likely training, but that begs the question of why Corey isn’t with a team now.

    • Toli Bera

what if his dad’s a super too? which is why he gets passed from team to team?

      • That would be interesting, but what if it is his mother with the powers? Mother goes off to that important conference that takes almost all the supers away, leaving dad at home to take care of things, and Mitch does his night thing to make up for his mom not being there to do it….

        • Toli Bera

another good theory. it would also give an X-gene reasoning for why some people are supers.

          • Tyler Griffin

I think there has already been a reference to mutation as a cause for some or even most of the supers in this universe.

      • Tyler Griffin

That would be an interesting twist, but it would also be a really big complication since Mitch has already gotten in trouble once for vigilantism, and if his dad was a hero, knows, AND supports his sons activities, that’s a huge problem if they get caught. If his dad is labeled a supervillain, by dent of not working for ExSec, then I can’t see how Mitch passed the screenings to begin with.

        • Klaus

We do not actually know that supers must work for ExSec or be hunted. If it was so, would the super teams be allowed to reject Fluke just because they consider his powers worthless? Could Flyboy have been expelled without being immediately arrested and tucked away somewhere safe?

          • Toli Bera

There’s a lot yet to be explored in this world. hope the comic touches on these things after this arc is over. (though aren’t there a few chapters left?)

          • Klaus

            Yes, 2 chapters.

          • Tyler Griffin

No, we don’t know. But the answer is sure, because TYP. They had a last option, and Mitch definitely would be at risk for arrest either way because of the vigilantism.

  • Melinda M

Ok so I have two serious ship now. Well done.

  • Mitch R.

    Incred.

  • Tyler Griffin

Oh, Mitch… You’re supposed swoop in for a lip lock to express how much you’ve missed him and happy you are he’s ok and how worried you were before you start the heart-to-heart

    • T Dibbler

Nah, it packs more emotional punch if you do the sweet lip-lock after the heart-to-heart. It’s less dramatic, but it’s more adorable. 🙂

      • Tyler Griffin

Why not both?! *mariachi music begins playing and everyone pops sombreros*
Seriously though, swoop in for the big dramatic, “OH MY GOD I MISSED YOU HOW DARE YOU SCARE ME LIKE THAT!!!!” embrace and kiss, have their talk and then settle into a nice nook on the roof to hold each other and cuddle kiss under the moonlight.

  • Megan Staples

Good gods, be 15 again? Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeveeeeeeeeeeeer! I was such a mixed-up depressed kid! (not quite suicidal but I did think about it) Not to mention what a daily struggle it was to put up with stupid people!
It’s nice to see the two friends back together. 🙂 Let’s see how much they bond again, hm? 😉

  • Klaus

So that kiss was back when Mitch was 12.

    • Yes.

And happy birthday, you got a good and sweet page 🙂

      • Klaus

        Thanks. Yes, I sure did.

    • Tyler Griffin

Don’t it just make you feel like you need a shower, lmao.

  • Mitch’s parents know what he’s doing, and helps him when he tells about the events of the night!
I really like his parents without even seeing them yet.

There’s some support, money and power behind Mitch it seems. This page give/imply a lot of info, both in what is said and between the lines. No wonder Mitch can have secret suits if he’s from a wealthy family who knows what he’s doing at night. No wonder he can be out several nights to fight crime if he doesn’t even have to hide it most times. I want to know more here.

Oh, page also imply that while Mitch isn’t out to the team, his parents know something or fully knows.
His parents liked Cory, but Mitch and Cory haven’t had contact for around three year. Yes, what did happen?
There’s story to be told here (o.o)

    • Tyler Griffin

Well, with a name like Thibideux (I slaughtered it, I know. I can’t spell for crap on normal words) you knew he had to be loaded or connected, or both 😛 That, like, SCREAMS Old Money

  • Missed camp. Woke up to no internet or tv, so a full signal breakdown somewhere. After Tecnical Support opened at 8, I was told they already had sent someone out to look at it. Still no good tv signal, but I have internet now so I don’t care.
The new page was my first place to go 🙂

  • Klaus

Thanks for your good wishes, Alex. And for a great page, as always.

    • You’re very welcome, Klaus. Thank you for being such an awesome member of our community. I hope you did indeed have a happy birthday. 🙂

      • Klaus

Oh yes. I got to meet the newest member of the family, He was 15 days old at the time.

  • What? I’ve had time for a late breakfast before reading my feed, and there are only 33 comments at time of writing? Are the Left-Pondians still in turkey coma?

Haven’t commented for a while because I’ve had migraine aura on and off for the last three weeks, but I’ve been really enjoying the resolution of this story. There’s a lot of hope in it, from Mitch’s level-headed acceptance that he needs to call backup even if it means trouble for him later, through to Kanye’s covering for the boys. I liked that last bit a lot – it reminded me of Duncan seeing genuine heroism in action and being impressed and glad it still existed, even if he was going to use it for his own ends.

    • Klaus

I hope you get well soon. Migraine is really nasty.

      • Thanks. Fortunately it’s been only the aura and not full-blown symptoms, but minimising time on the internet was still a good idea.

    • My turkey coma is happening today. Though after this week I am going to need it.

I can understand your migraine problems, and I have been spotty on here lately because of stomach and depression issues, sometimes they hit at the same time. -_- I was doing good for a bit, but my stomach has been acting up again the past couple of days. I hope your recurring migraine aura clears up soon.

      • Look after yourself – stomach/gut problems and depression can be a vicious circle.

The migraine seems to have finally settled down, but I then sprained my ankle earlier this week. Granted, I could have done with some time off the day job to work on revamping my website, but I’d rather not have *had* to do it. :-/ Getting old sucks…

        • Heh. I strained my ankle the other day when cleaning/moving things, then I strained something in my neck, then the juncture between my thumb and pointer finger somehow became sore on both hands….sleep has been off a bit since I had to move my bed to a new place in my room…..that Doki hasn’t bit someone’s head off yet is a minor miracle. ^_^

    • Tyler Griffin

I think a lot of folks were traveling yesterday and recuperating from traveling this morning.

    • Glad to see you here again, Jules, and glad you’ve been enjoying how the comic is wrapping up. I hope you feel all better soon. 🙂

  • bronakopdin

The talk is coming! Finally! Sure, it won’t get into the main topics immediately without a little smalltalk, eh Cory? ^^ But yeah if they didn’t see each other for 3 years it can be pretty hard even “just” to talk.
So Mitch’s parents know about his nightly one man shows? Now THAT is surprising!! And they don’t stop him? Or maybe he just told them this one thing now to help out Diego? Or he’s only saying half of the truth (like the YP was with him or sth?) but I guess those lies would be out soon… Even if it ended up in a somewhat good wy still, with noone dying at least, I hope he learned his lesson to some point, he’s a smart one after all, our Mitch 🙂

Cory on the other handlooks like a beaten puppy here 🙁 Sure his brother nearly died… I just hope he can pull himself up again, with Mitch’s help it should be possible 🙂

and Happy Happy Birthday Klaus 😀

    • Klaus

      Thanks.

      • Tyler Griffin

        Happy Birthday!

        • Klaus

          Thanks.

    • It was always a thought in the back of my head that the people that knew about Mitch’s late night activities were probably his parents.

      • Tyler Griffin

And if you go with the idea that we’ve had hinted, that the government regulates the lives of all supers here, it would probably be their best bet of being actively involved in his life since he appears to be a ward of the state, under the care of Amanda and Gordon.

  • Jeldenil

Ok, new theory: Mitch is AU Batman. And happy birthday, Klaus.

  • Nate

This page is all about the facial expressions. While they are all good, Cory’s little smile in panel #4 is particularly great.

  • Amanda

I was really happy to get to buy the books for Artifice and Young Protectors at Yaoicon and the four posters I bought *X* Flyboy’s first kiss is pinned on my wall beside my door for all to see when they come in.

  • Pikinanou

What kind of man is his dad, to be able to get the country’s top surgeon to come save the brother of his son’s friend, in the middle of the night?

    • Jason Wexler

      The Annihilator….

My question is something more akin to if Mitch’s parents are still alive, why do Amanda and Gordon have custody or responsibility for him?

      • Tyler Griffin

I would guess it has something to do with the way supers are regulated in universe, based strictly on the little bit that we have seen the government basically appears to have just two classes of super, government agents and super-villains. Meaning that if you aren’t on the payrolls, you are on the hit list, regardless of your activities; there are no “civilian” supers that we have seen or heard of. In that light, it would be a reasonable assumption that once a young person develops super powers they become a ward of the state. Since Mitch is underaged, and got booted from his previous assignment, Amanda and Gordon would be his last chance to stay off the baddie list. That would allow for his parents to still be active forces in his life, but not his main caretakers. And from a certain point of view, that actually makes a goodly amount of sense, who would best suited to deal with the unique challenges of raising an adolescent super; an adult(-ish in this case) super, or a pair of muggles?

      • Klaus

        Interesting possibility.

      • I think it is more that they have custody of him when he is doing YP stuff. Making them legally responsible for his actions, a bit like teachers and chaperons have a type of custody on school trips.

    • Terri Sutton

The surgeon could be his dad.

  • Klaus

    So far we have;

Amanda’s mom is capable of providing top secret info with about an hour’s notice.
Kyle’s dad is one of the more powerful kings of Hell.
Mitch dad is capable of getting the top thorax surgeon in the US to fly across the country with about an hour’s notice.

The entry requirements for the YP are quite steep!

    • Tyler Griffin

I somehow suspect that Spooky’s folks had a hand in his trip to Hell, and a sacrifice that personal would seem to indicate some serious prestige of it’s own.

      • T Dibbler

If that’s the case, then I really hate Spooky’s parents.

        • Tyler Griffin

Agreed. It’s another one of those details that we don’t know for certain, but to me the evidence points that way, We know it happened on his birthday and he popped into hell LITERALLY holding a plate with birthday cake and no memories of the immediately preceding events, so it’s reasonable to assume that it happened at the celebration. That means that it is also reasonable to assume that unless the ritual was designed to just randomly grab some kid somewhere on the planet that was having a birthday, it had to be performed by someone in attendance, and I just suspect his parents to be the most likely culprits given the parameters.

          • T Dibbler

I’d been kind of thinking it was somehow a huge accident, like he was at his birthday party, outside somewhere (like a picnic party in the mountains or by a lake), and just wandered into a portal area or something, but it having been a deliberate ritual makes sense, and in that case it does seem logical that it would be his parents or guardians who set it up. Poor little guy.

          • Klaus

Maybe he accidentally stepped into a gate that works only on your birthday?

          • Tyler Griffin

Right, your interpretation is definitely possible. But we know it was his birthday, and given his explanation to Kyle after the Date That Went Wrong about birthdays having power and that being commonly used in rituals I just always assumed the most nefarious explanation. Which, again, we don’t know because Spooky claims no memories, but it’s just what made the most sense to me.

          • T Dibbler

Hopefully we’ll find out one day. Or maybe it will be forever one of those ‘choose your own interpretation’ things. 🙂

          • Tyler Griffin

I like those books as a kid. Kind of. The frustrated me, because I like nice normal narratives, but their was an element of “breaking the rules” attraction to getting to choose the story too.

    • Weeell, Kyle’s dad wasn’t exactly known at the time.

  • D. G.

I’m so glad Diego is OK.

  • Heh. For the short time it will last, I just noticed the number of comments made by our top5 commenters. Particularly noticed the last two digit numbers for each. Funny coinsidence that they end at 73, 83, 93 and 81 and 91.

  • Klaus

Thank you very much. And I would also like to know all that.

  • Holly

I am really looking forward to the next page. Also looking forward to one day having disposable income and making YP literally my first Patreon donation.

  • Jason Moon

Gah! The wait is driving me buggy! 🙂

  • Sapfo

Oh Cory and Mitch are so puppydog sweet together. Teen love to them both.

  • Saxon_Brenton

It’s taken me while to think up something pertinent to comment on, but, you know, finally… (I’ll also add the obligatory happy birthday to Klaus, and the hopes that the USians had a happy Turkey Day *and* Leftover Day.)

Take a look at Cory’s body language. I mean, seriously, I haven’t seen anyone quite so hands-shoved-in-pockets and rounded-shouldered-with-embarrassment since Annihilator got Red Hot to admit that he’d never kissed anyone, way back in the prolog. Despite the happy outcome and the fact that he’s smiling, Cory is clearly uncomfortable. Lovely art, expecially on the only-basely-making-eye-contact in the final three panel.

    • Klaus

Obligatory thanks. And yes, Cory is very uncomfortable here.

  • Kate G

    Happy birthday to KLAUS!

And I will totally think of something more coherent later. My mom and I single-handedly (double-handedly?) just turned the whole house into Christmastown. THANK YOU DAD FOR HELPIN’ OUT! (He brought up the boxes but really, thank you for helping us unpack or do anything useful.) I need to get cleaned up before I can think properly.

    • Klaus

      Thanks.

      • Michael

        Happy Birthday!

How does everyone know everyone else’s birthdays?

        • Klaus

In my case I wrote about it ten days or so before. Alex remembered. In Sapfo’s case Doki remembered from last year.

          • Heh….Doki actually remembered because of a post on Twitter…

  • Happy Birthday to you!
    Happy Birthday to you!
    Happy Birthday dear Sapfo
    Happy Birthday to you!

    • Klaus

      Happy birthday!

      • Sapfo

        Thank you Klaus! 🙂

    • A happy birthday to Sapfo. Now she’s as old as me again 🙂

      • Sapfo

That I am! Thank you ^^

    • Sapfo

Oh thank you so very much dear Doki!

    • Happy Birthday, Ms. Strawberry!

      • Sapfo

        Thank you Admiral!
This ship will keep on sailing 😀

    • Happy birthday, Sapfo! 🙂

      • Sapfo

Thank you so much Alex! ^^

    • Michael

      Happy birthday, Sapfo!

  • Kate G

Mitch’s first kiss with Cory… O.O To be a patreon….. *sighs* The day I stop being such a dysfunctional human being I might be able to become a Patreon.

I love this page because it shows that Cory didn’t forget about Mitch. He could have just left Mitch in the dark about his situation. He could have just kept his mind on Diego. But, he wanted to actively talk to Mitch and it turns out they both wondered what happened to the other one.

We also learned something about Mitch and where he came from. His father is in the medical field; specifically, he’s probably an ER physician or trauma surgeon with a lot of ties in the medical field (I’m suspecting the surgeon they are calling in is a cardiovascular surgeon.) Cory and Mitch are from the Northeast near Boston. With a country as big as the US, surgeons need to be within a certain radius to come perform surgeries, especially time-sensitive surgeries like Diego’s.

We’ve also learned these two haven’t seen each other in years. It’s amazing that Mitch still heard Cory that clearly although they hadn’t seen or heard from Cory since they were children. Your voice changes so much from childhood to 15. Even if you look at the ages of 10-15, your voice–and even yourself–changes so much! I wonder if part of his hearing works on the essential self of a person; the essential personality. Those parts of yourself that are definitely defined from when you are very, very little and that’s why he can pick out the people he knows or knew well because he still knows their core personality.

  • kamishiro

omgg the bonus is ending and we are closer to know what happenned with the gang :000

    mitch is always cute <3

  • davefragments

I’m in a good mood tonight. My anthology of short stories went on sale.
And there is an update that might be the last page of Mitch’s adventure.
    Yay!

    • Michael

      Congratulations!

      • davefragments

        Thanks

    • That’s awesome!

      • davefragments

        thanks

  • Trying to cook a turkey tetrazzini. Fingers crossed. The recipe is a bit vague.

    • davefragments

They want you to wing it.

      • Most likely. It’s in the oven now. It tasted pretty good after I seasoned it all up. Of course I added a touch of garlic powder despite the fact the recipe didn’t call for it. A touch of garlic seems to make things better.

        • davefragments

i tried a leftover dish the other day. I salvaged the chicken breast and the stuffing but the potatoes were unceremoniously planted in the garden for next years fodder.

          • I keep wanting to garden, but it’s just a miracle that I’ve kept the irises alive all this time. Planted a lilac bush and some oregano earlier this year that seem to be doing okay. I had to plant the oregano because it was dying in the pot it came.

    • Kate G

As much as I don’t like turkey…that actually looks really good.

      • I’ve always loved turkey tetrazzini. At least the kind from Stouffers. We had left over turkey so we thought we’d try to make it.

        • Kate G

That’s how you do it. If you like it enough and you have the ingredients, why not try to make it. Me? I love that new Vermont cheese mac & cheese from Stouffers. Not as good as Panera mac & cheese (don’t give me that look. I LOVE that shit) but it’s pretty good.

          • I keep wanting to make mac an cheese from scratch, but I have yet to make a cheese sauce that didn’t get all lumpy and gross. I’m surprised the sauce for the tetrazzini came out smooth.

          • Kate G

I cheat and use Cheese soup from Campbells. XD I’m too impatient.

          • LOL! That should do it. 😀

          • Kate G

That is seriously my impatience. I use that and some other ingredients to make my “Sauce” and dump my pasta in and poof! instant “velveeta-like” macaroni and cheese. Of course, my grandma made up that recipe so really I’m just copying her. So, really, she was the impatient one and I’m just as impatient. No patience for cooking!

          • I have my moments. And then there are other moments. My biggest problem is I suck at Plan B. If Plan A goes wrong, nobody better talk to me.

          • Kate G

HA! I can usually think fast on my feet. It’s when Plan C fails. Then I throw in the towel and you best avoid me at all costs.

          • davefragments

I had thanksgiving at my Niece’s with my brother and sister-in-law. When my Sister-in-law was cleaning the turkey carcass, she screamed about a “tree” being in the cavity. It was rosemary, fresh cut.
I don’t do the Mac and Cheese thing. Lactose intolerant.

  • Kate G

HELLO CAMPERS!!!!!!!!!! I went to Dover to get my nephew his first “horse” (a stick horse, naturally) and I won a free riding shirt! *pumps fist* Free stuff!

    • Kate G

Also ended up buying my brother’s Christmas present for me (because he’d never get the right crop) and my coach a present. Damn I can never just buy what I originally needed to get (the stick horse) when I go to that place. It’s a black hole.

      • Do I assume Dover Saddlery? Or Dover, England? Because as a former equestrian, Dover Saddlery? Drool.

        • Kate G

Dover Saddlery. Dover, England would not be a drive. That would be a drive and an airplane and a lot of money I do not have, LOL.

          • Just wanted to make certain. 😀 I mean assumptions are not always good to make.

Always loved looking at and drooling over the Dover catalogue.

          • Kate G

            True.

Do not get me started on the catalogues. At least five things are circled every new one I get. HA. I know for certain I’m getting the new winter boots from the catalogue (see me being British and calling them catalogue? Here in the US I should be saying CATALOG. Pft, spell check, I shall ignore you) for Christmas. I know I’m getting the correct crop from my brother because, well, I BOUGHT IT! I have no idea what else I may get from there though and I know my mom ordered something else from there.

It’s a black hole for your credit card, that place. Once you go in there….you don’t come out without spending $50. $100 if you need show clothes.

          • We have a tack shop here in California called Broken Horn. It has EVERYTHING!! I mean EVERYTHING. It was the most beautiful tack shop.

Beware of tack shops, right? You walk in and you’re like, “I want this, this, this, this, this, and oooooooh this saddle is pretty!” EVEN IF you don’t own a horse.

And of course, I spotted this, and if you know me and my love of dogs, I was all over it. Of course, it’s FOR KIDS. My super secret power: I FIT in kid’s equestrian clothes (fashion clothes is another story; they usually cut the shoulders too narrow.) This is now on my priority list of things of must haves:

      WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • Yay!

      • heh, yeah it went like this:

*Doki wakes up and notices how dark her room is*
*Doki thinks ‘Oh sh*t! What time is it? Did I miss camp?*
*Doki puts on glasses and looks at clock*
*Doki sighs in relief that she might not have missed camp*
