175 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 38

Phew! And just in time for Turkey Day!

In Patreon news, $5+ Patrons are already going to get to download a sexy, nude Annihilator pin-up at the end of this month. This week, $5+ Patrons will also get to download a special kissing pin-up featuring a certain young hero whose adventures we’ve been following in this bonus comic — stay tuned for a sneak peek preview image of that—or become a Patron right now and download the image yourself tomorrow! 🙂 (Why else should you consider becoming a “Patron”? Find out here.)

So! Kanya’s picking up a little spending cash, and Flyboy got Diego to the hospital just in time. Will Flyboy ever see Cory again? And if so, what would they say to each other?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you then! 😀

(And, for those in the U.S., HAPPY THANKSGIVING, y’all!)

  • See! I’m not the only one!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yup. All that cash just lying around on the ground is very tempting.

      • I mean, she might be hungry.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Plus if she had a car parked anywhere near the warehouse, she doesn’t anymore.

          • That’s true. Cab fare totally.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            CAB TO CHINA!!!!!

          • Ha!

          • Keneu

No magic portals? What kind of nonsense is that?

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Wise truth.

        • Chris Dangerfield

          FRITTER?

          • Exactly

          • Nom nom nom

          • Michael

Your young men will be frittering! Frittering away their noontime, suppertime, chore times too!

          • We got trouble here.

          • Michael

            Right here in River City!

Trouble with a capital ‘T’, and that rhymes with ‘P’, and that stands for pool!

      • davefragments

I don’t think I could pass up free money.
Not lots of free money. Just enough for a good dinner or two.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          A sensible amount.

          • Chris Dangerfield

*finger to lips* “ONE BILLION DOLLARS!”

        • Michael

          Or one REALLY GOOD dinner.

          • davefragments

Did you see this on the news?
            http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/kahuku-high-school-football-haka_5654dd58e4b0258edb336181

For about two years I Was a bagpiper for the marching band at College and we used to do crap to disturb the game (slightly obscene cheers, kidnapping the other team’s cheerleaders, a Narcissus routine with the drum major, marching down the street in uniform at rush hour) but not quite this little gem…

          • Michael

the haka is a long-standing tradition that is used by almost every Polynesian sporting team, and none of those have ever been penalised for it. Every Polynesian culture, including Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, etc. all have their own versions of the haka, which is even used to celebrate victories, welcome visitors and guests, bid farewell to same, or celebrate the lives of the dead at their funerals.

I completely disagree that performing the haka before a football game is “unsportsmanlike”, it’s such a large part of their culture that it’s comparable to saying grace before a meal.

The New Zealand rugby team even once performed a haka in honour of the Queen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la2ew0p9AfE

          • davefragments

The other team wasn’t prepared to answer the Haka and lost…

          • Michael

What is really special is when you get two different Polynesian nations competing against each other, like the Samoa vs Tonga rugby game here.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwNyBoLxaB4

          • davefragments

You can see the suddenly appearing and quickly disappearing grins and smirks of the players. This is part of the game and the crowd loves it. I’m surprised that the St Louis team wasn’t prepared for what the Hawaiians might do.

        • Exactly. Maybe enough for a bit of ice cream afterwards.

      • Saxon_Brenton

[innocent look] What money just lying around? It all got sucked up in the whirlwind and dumped out over the bay. Really!

        • Hopefully none of it’s marked.

        • Chris Dangerfield

She is just being a good employee and tidying up… 🙂

  • I hope Cory is oki with heights and risky flying xD

  • Well it does help to know people in high (herrr) places.

  • davefragments

Interesting. On one point, it’s a good ending with Cory saved from a life in crime and Diego getting the medical treatment he needs. One ht other hand, Mitch just ducked any consequences. And there are consequences. Pissed off mob guys. Ivan dead.
And Kanya has a “get out of jail free” card she can use. Although, from that look, I think she might have a crush on Mitch.

    • Chris Dangerfield

“Crush on Mitch” … ahhhhhh… cut the gal some slack. Who doesn’t? 😀

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Yay!!!

  • DonnaC

I like that she is pocketing some of that money

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Me too.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Make it three… I hope she finds more before the cops arrive.

  • Not purely good, but good enough. I still like Kanya.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I quite agree.

  • Eh, I probably would have taken a ‘tip’ after such a night myself too. I don’t think there’s a bonus salery for sticking around through a weird tornado xD

    • stickfigurefairytales

There are indeed times when you’re not paid nearly enough to deal with this crap.

    • Chris Dangerfield

HA! I very much doubt she is covered under the company’s “tornado policy.” 😀

  • Michael

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    friends in “high” places.

    heeheehee…

  • Michael

I love the half-expression in the last panel. It’s half shock of the night/adrenaline catching up to him (and OMG I ALMOST DIED. PEOPLE DIED AND I WAS ALMOST ONE OF THEM), and half “I am justice. I am the night”. Totally how I would feel in that situation.

    • Michael

And props to the artists for leaving the debris in a spiral pattern. It’s little details like that that elevate the comic to a higher level.

    • Thank you, Michael — yep, I love what Adam did there. He totally nailed that expression. 🙂

  • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, so, I got the roleplaying game metaphore back-the-front on the previous comments page: It’s Kanya spending an experience point and buying a conatct with Flyboy. Smart woman.

    • Michael

Like I said, either way it gives a bonus to CHA rolls and related saves.

    • 🙂

  • Truck ..just lying there, hanging around, on top of a building. That clean up on isle 2 (or here that’s more like ‘alley 2’) is gonna take a bit of work.

    • Actually, I think that truck is IN the building…

      • Michael

A little from column A, a little from column B.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was also at least partly in the building across the street.

  • Connor

I should not be laughing this much about “high places.”

    • Michael

I know, right? But unlike cheesy sitcom lines, silly one-liners like that are exactly what you would expect from someone just coming to grips with nearly being obliterated by an inconsolable telekinetic superteen.

      • Chris Dangerfield

It’s that the line — coupled with her poor bruised face, her unquenchable moxy and her wry tucking of a few extra bucks in her shirt pocket. She’s like the 40’s femme fatale who knows exactly what kind of wry joke she’s making. Tough life and no one is flying here out of it.

Those are the characters who sense of humor is their shield in a tough world. Love her.

        • Have I ever mentioned that To Have and Have Not is one of my favorite movies? Ms. Bacall and her dialogue is the main reason.

Fun fact: it was her first movie, and in it, she’s playing a woman in her twenties, but she was only 19.

She had it from the start…

          • Chris Dangerfield

            I love Bacall in that.

I also think of Ruth Hussey as “Elizabeth Imbre” in George Kukor’s, The Philadelphia Story (one of my faves).

She’s the slightly older, slightly tougher, very wry and funny photographer girlfriend of a very young handsome writer, Jimmy Stewart. They go to photograph the shenanigans of Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant as the super rich.

At one point, she sees the rich beautiful Katharine Hepburn put her eyes on Jimmy and walk off with him, and it’s clear it’s hard. When the woman doing her nails at the time asks (at Hussy’s wince), “Sorry dear, a little rough?” Hussey responds with a wry look, “A little, but I’m used to it.” All is right in the end. Great film.

Kanya reminds me of Hussey in that film. Yeah, life can be tough, but I’m used to it… It’s just great. Thanks Alex.

  • And apparently she missed the part about his hearing being that good.

But I would like to send out warm wishes for all the turkeys out there. May this be the best Turkey Day you’ve ever had, and may it keep getting even better.

    • But he has to focus on a voice, or let himself listen to every voice around, for it to really work. I don’t think he was focused on her after taking off.

  • And I’m off, to take a shower and get ready for work. Can’t wait to get back to look at the page some more later today.

    • stickfigurefairytales

See you later, Danish! I think I’m going to head off to bed myself.

  • Well Mitch gotta get that kiss, sooooooo… 😀

    • Michael

      I’m still waiting!

Quoth the cute internet meme cat:

It can be cuddles time nao?

  • davefragments

I have to say one thing that has (sort of) gone unnoticed which is to Alex’s credit.

Spooky is one of the few Oriental heroes and love interests in popular literature.
The show “Into the Badlands” has an Oriental hero and love interest and it is late coming to the USA public.

  • Sapfo

All ends, that ends well…. I would keep an eye out for that lady <.<

Have a great holiday all of you.

    • davefragments

      Have a good Thanksgiving.

  • davefragments

To all who celebrate it — Have a good Thanksgiving.

    • Chris Dangerfield

Yes indeed!!! Happy weekend/Thanksgiving to all here and very much to our artists and author who give us so much of themselves. Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Chris Dangerfield

And just when you thought it couldn’t get better… HA!

Oh Alex, Adam and Veronica, these pages just ADD UP. They really do. Mitch being really touched because the “tough chick” did a good thing and the look on his face as she surprised him is priceless. That’s life learning right there.

Here wry acknowledgement of what it’s like to be “one of us”… not superman, not the most gorgeous sorceress in 6,000 years, just a tough girl with a lot of moxy (like that word?) who understands that being tough is one thing about survival, but doing a good deed is another important thing about surviving. God I love Kanya’s character. She is as appealing and yet “real-world” as it gets. I think it makes us love her more. How do you face all that “magic and power” and yet not be bitter. She has a core of smart steel that lady. If Mitch ever needed a business partner for adventuring, like Spooky has Amanda… then I’d tell him to look up Kanya. I think she’d be good (in all the best platonic sense) for our wonder boy.

Then we have that final panel of Mitch with his legs all huddled up in that position we all get when the world is big and scary and unknown. That pose right there reminds us that he’s just a kid. Sure he can handle (or try) mobsters, gun fights, tornados, close friends out of control… but when it comes the unknowns of doctors and “Is he gonna make it?” Mitch is just like the rest of us the first time we all have to sleep overnight in a hospital waiting room praying that someone will come out that door and give us good news. I swear in THAT panel he look 13 years old.

I think that’s perfect. I’ve been in a few waiting rooms and it’s those moments that remind you that so much of life is out of your control and praying is a very reasonable thing.

Thank you all for a beautiful emotional series of pages. I’ll just repeat myself again and say that the acting is just exceptional. I desperately want Diego to live… and that’s just because I’ve care for Cory and Mitch. And isn’t that what it’s all about? Beautiful work guys. Thank you.

    • Sapfo

Look at Chris comments. He said it all.
      Good Chris! 🙂

    • Thank you for another beautiful analysis, Chris. It’s the “acting” that’s ultimately the most fun for us in this story, and it’s a real treat to read your thoughtful reaction to it. You’ve got me grinning over here. 🙂

    • I cannot put it better than Chris. Amazing words, mein fiend.

  • Toli Bera

    Congrats on your… $30 Katya? o.O

    • Chris Dangerfield

Oh, with that expression on her face? I think the “tidying up” has just begun… Hey! A girl’s gotta have a 401K for her retirement fund. Right?

      • Toli Bera

or funding to get the hell out of dodge.

  • timemonkey

Hmmmm, I wonder if this whole story has been a confession?

    • I’ve had that thought for a couple of pages.

      • Nate

To whom? My money would be on Amanda, with Spooky a close second.

(Kyle & Paul would be tied for third, and Tsunami would be like 113th)

    • Keneu

That reminds me of a Galician novel called A Esmorga by Eduardo Blanco Amor – it was translated into English as On a Bender. It’s an account of a drinking spree that went to hell, told by an unreliable narrator to the authorities. It’s one of the most famous and most important novels written in Galician, and it deals with themes like mainstream vs. marginal, authority vs. social deviance, repressing oneself vs. being oneself, poverty, or homosexuality – the author was homosexual himself and wrote in Galician, two things that made him persona non grata for the Francoist dictatorship in Spain.

      http://mundoadiante.blogspot.com.es/2012/03/on-bender.html

Sorry for the offtopic, I like that novel a lot. 🙂

    • Jeldenil

      Fuck my tearducts.

  • Jeldenil

Yeah, just put him in the doorway. :p

  • Exaggerated Annoyance

Ha, I love Kanya. I hope she reappears in the main plot sometime.

  • bronakopdin

ha! Well I don’t blame her I bet she has that job for a reason and needs the money!
also she’s a good one, even if she might do this because she hopes to have an advantage in a possible future situation, she still acted like she did and that’s the important part 🙂
Good thing Diego made it! But really now I’m curious about how Mitch and Cory will part ways now or yeah rather I wanna see them talk to each other in a somewhat normal situation now! I highly doubt that Mitch will just leave?!?!?

  • Bobbi Blackcat

Oh dang wonder if she’ll be nice or if blackmail will factor in the future…

  • Kanya’s last words here… there’s the plot intro to another Mitch story, either as future comic or prose story (like the ones about Spooky on Patreon).
I would love either option 🙂

    • Klaus

      Famous last words?

  • Pikinanou

I know it’s a serious situation, that I’m so glad worked out in the end, but I can’t help chuckling at how Mitch is holding Cory. Just look at him in the 5th panel: weeeeee!

    • Derkins

Ha! I’m afraid of heights so I would NOT look calm like that. That looks like it would be terrifying to most anyone! I guess it was like someone was saying before (don’t remember who)– it says a lot for how much he trusts Mitch.

    • 🙂

  • Derkins

    *snerk* “high places” pun :3
Wonder if she’s going to come back into the story arc some day. Would love that.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

The “friends in high places” was that a pun or hinting at something else? We know now Diego is going to be OK……but what about Corey?

  • Jason Moon

She’s probably gonna need that caysh in case her bosses decide to fire her. If they don’t; hey, free money. 🙂

Considering that Diego(And Cory, to a lesser extent) have a reason to be thankful, I was wondering if this story is, in fact, taking place on or near some Thanksgiving of the past or just some generic “time of yesteryear”?

  • strangeangel24601

Is that a truck sticking out of the side of that building?!

  • Kate G

I am SO TIRED Y’ALL. Fuck them seizures.

Okay, it doesn’t help it is 3 AM (but we all know this is my prime prowling time) but I’m so tired. Gaaaaaaaaaah.

I’m glad Mitch got Diego and Cory to the hospital in time! I’m still curious how Mitch’s relationship with Cory is. He did knock him out of his rage spell, but what is his relationship with him like? How does he know Cory in the first place? COME ON, I want to know!!! <-I'm very nosy.

  • SofiaT

    Hi folks!

After 3 months of things being crazy at the office, followed by a (too short) vacation in paradise (aka Queensland) and then more office craziness, I’m finally reaching the slow period of the year… And I thought I’d drop by and see how everyone is doing!

    So… What did I miss? 😀

And Happy Thanksgiving to the Americans in the room!

    • SOFIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *glomps* Good to see you!

      • SofiaT

        Hi Doki! 🙂

This bonus comic must have made you a very happy gal -plenty of Mitch!!

…My spidey senses on the other hand tell me it won’t be long now till we get to see Duncan again >:D

        • Very happy! Have you seen how utterly perfect they have drawn Mitch? PERFECTION!

Yes I know. All good things must come to an end alas…

          • Klaus

Mitch will be in chapter 4 too. Though not quite as much in the spotlight.

    • Nice to see you around again 🙂 Good that you’re getting a breather at work.

As for missed.. Camps, good talks/debates and fine art, though you’re catching up on the last ^_^

      • SofiaT

I’ve been reading the comic on update days, I just haven’t been reading the comments.
As we get closer to Xmas I should be able to be part of the community again once more 🙂

      • Saxon_Brenton

As for missed.. Camps, good talks/debates and fine art
Cough. On the down side, occasional outbreaks of wondering when the main story will re-start, because of the way the bonus stories have run together in a continuous block since April.

A lot of it’s been good-natured… But this is the Internet, and you won’t be able to get rid of nastiness unless everybody drops dead. And I suspect that even then there’ll only be a brief pause before the malware programs achieve self-awareness and start an AI civilization based on trolling…

    • Well aren’t you a sight for sore eyes. 🙂 glad you’re getting a bit of breathing room!

      • SofiaT

Just starting to now… From next week things will get even better 🙂

    • Good to see you here, Sofia! Glad you’re getting a break from the craziness. 🙂

      • SofiaT

Typical case of jinxing it: this week has been crazy so far!
        I shouldn’t have spoken so soon… :0/

But thanks for your kind words, Alex 🙂

  • Cory was Mitch’s first kiss (which art has been made of for trading cards), but I hope we get to see them kiss again, or at least rekindle their friendship after three years apart – if we’re leaving the opening of a future Kyle/Mitch pairing open 🙂

    • Klaus

The kiss must come after they meet again. Mitch is clearly older than twelve on that picture.

      • Chris Dangerfield

I swear Klaus. You are either an AI or have a borg chip implanted with all the TYP data. Just remember, in this AU time may flow differently, but I’m sure your microprocessors can compensate for the time difference. 😀

        • Klaus

The Wolf mentioned the three year gap. (Actually I remembered it too.)

      • Actually, I have the poster of this and looking closer, Mitch looks younger on that art than he do now. I initially thought they were older too, but not because of Mitch. My reason was Cory.
Cory looks mature for a 12 (or 13) year old, but after looking at it, I decided that for me it was the collarbones that gave that impression at first.
However, I have seen fit and/or mature 12 year olds with a bodytype similar or bigger than theirs, so it’s hard to tell sometimes.

Story time. Back in ’06 I worked at a school, cleaning, and one day I was at the hallway for the classes that had the 13-16 year olds, 7th-9th (and sometimes 10th) grade in Denmark for those who don’t know. At that time there was also teacher-interns there, as part of their education to become a teacher, and I saw this one really cute guy. He was around 6’1 feet tall, fit and a good set of wide shoulder and overall well sized body. He was walking with another intern teacher and a group of 8th graders.
I though he was damn cute and hot, and send my handful of looks after him for two days – right until I to my horrified shock realized he wasn’t an intern, but one of the 8th grade students >.>
He couldn’t have been more than 14, MAYBE barely 15 if he had started school late, but he looked and could easily pass for 20. He was up to a full head higher than most of his classmates, and with his physique, he towered over them. Even over the actual intern
FOURTEEN!! I had to call a friend and rant over me having ogled the booty of a 14 year old all day. She was crying from laughter on the phone while listening to me.

        • Michael

There’s a student at my kung fu school who turned 14 recently, and he’s taller (he’s about 5″11′) and broader/more muscled than me. You could easily mistake him for a baby-faced 16-17 year old because of his size.

It may not surprise you to learn that he’s of mixed heritage: Danish, and Northern Scottish. In other words, pure Viking.

          • Klaus

I have met a 13 year old who looked 17 or 18. Several times in the few days that visit lasted, I had to stop myself from thinking he was acting childish. Yes. No wonder. He was a child.

    • Chris Dangerfield

No, Kyle is completely involved with Spooky and is in a three-way relationship with him and Amanda (it takes a lot to make Spooky happy, but they’re up to the job). Mitch still has plenty of time to find his OTP. This is his time to experiment. 🙂

The real question is who are we going to find to date grumpy Gordon?

And, all this is still dependent on who Sircea kills. 😀

      • I’m rooting for Mitch and Cory myself 🙂

        • Chris Dangerfield

HA! Actually, me too. Their kiss is extra-adorbs.

          • *growls* Don’t mention that k-word in the same sentence as Mitch and Cory. I nicely ignored that part of your original comment xD

      • Klaus

But where does Anaado fit in?

        • Chris Dangerfield

Having seen the recent picture? I’d have to say, ANYWHERE HE WANTS TO. LOL

(little horned cutie that he is). 😀

  • Hours Left

Happy Thanksgiving to all those in the US. 🙂

  • Chris Dangerfield

Honestly, I think American Thanksgiving is a rather odd and silly holiday.

However, I can honestly say I’m thankful for The Young Protectors. So, thanks Alex, Adam and Vero (and our guest artists) for all the goodies all year long. And, thank you all for being such a nice group. A fanboy can’t ask for much better.

    Take care.
    ––Chris

  • I wish a good happy Thanksiving to the people having this day.

  • Megan Staples

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALEX!

  • Tyler Griffin

Happy Turkey Lurkey day Alex and gang!!!!!!

  • Happy Leftovers Day!! 😀

  • *rolls in* I wonder if all the US readers are still too full. Then again I am early, they might still be in a food coma.

    • Doki is eating tomorrow, which is also Nephew’s birthday.

      • Doki is tired and still has to finish cleaning her bathroom…

        • Stupid cleaning.

          • Doki cleaned the kitchen, dining room, living room and laundry room last night.

          • Doki deserves to sit and chat for a minute.

          • Doki is taking small break. Probably would have finished all rooms last night, but i had a lot of back up jugs to clean out and fill up with water. Next time the pipes bust or have issues we are going to be able to use the potty and wash our hands. -_-

          • Damn, you are a superhero in disguise.

          • lol! We had the pipes along the line burst a few times this year. The water company hasn’t had a good year. I figured since there were jugs I could wash out and store water in, might as well. It got old fast. “Granny why don’t we have water?” “I don’t know. We don’t have water?” “*sigh*”

Heh. My uncle saw them and the first thing out of his mouth was “You afraid I am going to turn the water off?” I was soo tempted to say “Wouldn’t be the first time!” but I restrained myself. -_-

          • See, Super Doki!

          • He was already accusing me of being snippy because I was busy and doing things instead of slowing down and talking to him.

I have avoided talking to him when I can ever since he threatened to shoot my friend just because he is dark skinned. -_- He also causes me to have anxiety issues whenever he is around. I usually have a heightened “fight or flight” around him now.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            What an asshole.

          • Yes he is.

          • That sucks.

        • Doki made the Rum Cake, Pumpkin Pie, and helped with the Cherry Pie today.

          • Mmmm Pie…. *drool*

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yummy!

      • My brother and sil will be up tomorrow, but we’re eating chilidogs instead of regular TG dinner (we had that yesterday).

    • Tyler Griffin

Not too full here. Taking advantage of the fact the ‘rents are halfway
to the other side of the continent and washing dishes clothes with
      actual appliances

      • Always a nice thing.

Indeed, my house isn’t even wired for an outlet for a washer and dryer, so I do laundry out here once a week, but normally try to limit myself to not be in the way. I always have to do dishes by hand. NOT THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!!! LoL

          • Woohoo!

          • Tyler Griffin

LoL. I know. I’m washing bedclothes, curtains, hell I even washed the dust rags JUST BECAUSE I CAN! MUahahahahahaha! (It’s a great house, but the original section was built pre-Great Drepression, the bathroom was added when plumbing came to the county, and a den +fireplace was added when electricity rolled through, then somewhere ’round the 50’s a master bedroom and living room was added and the house re-wired. A modern re-wiring and re-plumbing are on my agenda, but since I lack a suitable utility closet/room space for major appliances it’s not a pressing goal, lol.

          • At least there is a place to go. 🙂

            LoL!

Ooh, that reminds me – there some leftover pumpkin cheesecake calling my name.

      • Nom nom. We’re about to eat some pumpkin pie. Just had some turkey tortilla soup (sans tortillas).

          Yum!!

          • I want another piece of pie.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I could go for some pumpkin pie as well.

          • I can always go for pie.

      • I will have some!

Our sports team was victorious at sports today, despite some of the officials failing to blow whistles when the other sports team did things that were against the rules of sport.

    • Yay for sports team overcoming bad sports calls and winning the sport.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hooray for winning the sport!
