260 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 29

Sorry, Sausalito.

I’m currently tabling at Nijicon 2015 in Oaks, PA this weekend, October 24th and 25th, along with even cooler webcomic creators, including Starfighter‘s Hamlet Machine and  T.J. and Amal‘s creator E.K. Weaver! It’s taking place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, 100 Station Avenue, Oaks, PA 19456. I’ll have Artifice books and advance copies of The Young Protectors books and some very special new, sexy prints and cards. As you know, I don’t get to the East Coast for Cons very often—if you’re nearby, please stop by and say hello!

Over on the Patreon page, $5+ Patrons got to see something very special this week: a sexy, shirtless fireman pin-up of Kyle! Comments have included: “OMG. I don’t mean to be crude, but that is an image that could keep me company for many long, cold nights…”, “Dimples, treasure trail, musculature well defined, good skin tone, in other words, a stunning work of art.”, “nice rendered muscles and such tight fitting boxers… pin-up calendar style: success!”, and “all the little details that somehow raise him from ‘just’ a drawing to something ‘more’… the attention to the details that builds up to this je ne sais quoi really sets this apart from even the other Romance Cards (that we’ve seen so far) as something truly special.”

Here is a sneak preview of the pin-up:

AMW_Comics_Kyle-Romance-SFW_PREVIEW

Look at that cute smile. 🙂

Also, $10+ Patrons will get to download a high-res version of this pin-up when this month’s payments clear at the beginning of next month. And they’ll also get to download a high-res of the NSFW version of this pin-up where the boxers come off!

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So. Wow. That telekinetic tornado is looking pretty, uh, out of control. And big. I’d be calling for a little backup right around now too. So, who’s going to answer that call? How will they react when they learn what Flyboy’s been up to? And what can even the full The Young Protectors team be able to do to stop Cory from ripping apart the whole city?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Oooooh! He’s sending out the TYP signal??

    • Tyler Griffin

congratulations, Admiral! +1 goat for you to compliment your virgin

      • Oooh a goat! *pets goat*

        • Chris Dangerfield

          Damn… too late.

          • *takes goat on walk around neighborhood*

          • Chris Dangerfield

Sad… so very sad… when they go around the goat-bend. 😀

          • You’re just in denial. 😛

          • Klaus

            The longest river in Africa!

          • Jeldenil

I want a goat too. I love goats. But I’m never going to steal the virgin 🙁

          • We don’t steal. We Claim.

          • Jeldenil

Oh. Well, save a goat for me? I’m sure amongstyou virgin-claimers, there is a spare goat somewhere for those of us who can’t make the hours.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Quick sacrifice that devil goat before she makes a pet of it.

  • DC

    OMG, OMG,OMG

    • Saxon_Brenton

My first thought was to sing-song ‘It’s getting wuh-orrrrrse!’

  • davefragments

He’s learning that things are seldom simple and life is abysmally complicated.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Adulting is rough that way!

      • Dun wanna adult.

        • Michael

Like my brother said a few hours ago, being an adult is a series of bills and disappointments.

  • Well, if you are going to loose it, you might as well take everything in the vicinity with you…

    • Tyler Griffin

      That’s *MY* philosophy.

  • jreed3842

    Whew….
That’s about all I’ve got to say for this page!

  • Still curious when exactly this falls in the time line. It’s before the current Kyle arc, but is this around the prologue? The first interlude when they’re looking at the porn?

  • Michael

    SEND IN THE CAVALRY!

Hopefully Amanda can do her stuff like in the Spooky interlude, and calm Cory down enough to get everyone to hospital who needs it.

  • Two things that come to mind when he pulls that out…..

    1) I really hope it isn’t Tsu-Tsu on monitor duty tonight

    2) I am not sure Fluke should be on the response team….odds are 50/50 on his powers helping or making things worse

    • Michael

Agreed, I really hope Tsu isn’t on duty or this could get even more ugly. We don’t need lectures and guilt trips right now, we need to calm Cory down. Which Tsunami is not exactly suited for.

      • Michael

On the other hand, getting Tsunami’s help is better than a kick in the teeth. XD

        • Well, I would put it equal to getting a kick in the teeth.

          • Michael

That would probably be his opening move as he jumps off the helicopter.

    • so you’d prefer Kyle to set that chaotic flying debris on fire? I guess the only one having fun with that one would be Vero.

      • Tyler Griffin

        Great flaming vortexes Batman!

      • …..I do like watching things burn….

  • Uh… Who ya gonna call? *runs away*

    • “Somebody else.”

    • LOL.. I was just typing that as my first comment. Now deleted it since you beat me by seconds xD

      • I mean, I was just about to post it. Not that I removed my comment.

      • I hate when that happens. Heee!

        • Oh, and I should have replied to that with: Yooung Pro-tectoors! *cue music*

  • D’oh! I was refreshing and refreshing, until 6mins ago, and nothing showed up. Finally figured I refreshed wrong webaddress. I’m tired >.<

  • So now we know for sure. The team knew about Mitch’s little… side business, before the ETE story arc. As I said earlier, on earlier page, that would actually put a little more sense/meaning behind a thing or two said and done in the main arc. There’s more to be read between the lines.

    • And maybe why they were a little hard on him, not letting him be involved, because of these exploits.

      • And Mitch’s determination on not being the one to get people hurt, as well as things he said on the flight. Things everyone did and said on that flight, and Amansa’s respons to it all (which I went back and searched for) http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-43/

        • Still want to punch Tsu in the nose. Obviously Mitch has some experience with battle.

          • There’s battle and then there’s BATTLE, and in some ways I guess you could say Mitch ‘failed’ his battle. His experience, if calling it that, didn’t cut it this time.
Bet Mitch has used a good part of his time after this with training – so he won’t fail again. So he CAN be useful, as he said he was on the plane. I wonder if he’s sorta been grounded until they got on that plane (or needed to fly the car).
No, I wouldn’t say that his experience is a battle experince exactly. It’s more like an extended rescue mission here.

          • But it’s more than what Tsu is giving him credit for. Mitch has definitely been in high stress situations. He knows how to keep his cool. Unlike a certain water bender we know and want to punch in the nose.

          • Klaus

Experience is experience. You can learn as much from failure as from success.

          • yup the real difference betwwen a Master and a Student… A Master as failed more times then the Student has even tried

  • Michael

Have to say, the quality of the art just keeps getting better. Last page was awesome, but the sense of depth and magnitude and power in the first panel, with teeny tiny Cory and Diego in the centre and then this massive whirling maelstrom of stunningly-detailed debris towering over them and even dwarfing the multi-storey office/warehouse buildings around them is just awe-inspiring.

Even in the other panels, the way Vero has used those streaks of greys and whites to create a sense of chaotic whirling, rushing wind is just so evocative. It really shows a lot of skill in choosing and applying the right colours in the right ways.

That’s not to discredit Adam’s awesome linework, though, Mitch’s expression in the last panel is just perfect. Dark, determined, angry, and every inch heroic.

    • Ninhursag

I agree, the art improves with each page, it’s mesmerizing.

  • Oki, have an analyzing comment in my head, but it will have to wait. Down to 5% power on tablet, and a friend is borrowing my couch for the night, so can’t use computer right now or get my charger. I’ll get back to that comment later 🙂

  • Chris Dangerfield

Okay. That doesn’t look like it’s getting better. Maybe I’m not seeing the calm part? 🙂

  • Hours Left

Adam and Vero killing it on this page. Wow.

I wanna know more about the ice guy.

    • Michael

If I had ice powers, nobody could ever stop me from making puns worthy of, and inspired by, Batman & Robin.

      “Ice to meet you!”
“Allow me to break the ice. My name is Freeze. Learn it well. For it’s the chilling sound of your doom.”
      “Tonight’s forecast… a freeze is coming!”

“Sooner or later all who stand in my way must feel the icy touch of death!”

“Revenge is a dish… best served COLD.”

      entire world: *groans*

      • Tyler Griffin

Your humor leaves me feeling chilled.

        • Michael

Those are all verbatim from the 1997 Batman & Robin movie.

          • Tyler Griffin

            I realized the 😀 😛

          • Michael

My problem now is that I know exactly what you meant, but my brain is going

“realised the what? REALISED THE WHAT?

            “P

        • Michael

You’d have to be cold-hearted to not at least chuckle.

          • or rather shiver….

          • Tyler Griffin

            Perhaps it’s just freezer-burned

      • Klaus

        Not cool!

        • Michael

chill out, man, no need to be so frosty.

  • YangYueLan

    That explains Sausalito. 😛
Again with the first panel! Amazing!

  • Adam Black

I thought The team thought Mitch had no combat experience.

    • Michael

This was technically a hostage situation, not combat.

And we can’t really say he’s had a *successful* experience.

  • David Welbourn

Goodness. I was expecting trouble involving Corey’s power, but I certainly wasn’t expecting him to be this powerful nor to go out of control. However, if Mitch is calling in the rest of the team, we can start guessing how they might handle this.

I can see Commander trying to reach Corey telepathically, trying to calm him down. I assume Spooky has some magical first aid and maybe something in his overcoat of tricks to combat the tornado itself. Fluke could conceivably reach the eye of the storm just by being flung about in just the right way, but it might be a lot simpler if Flyboy just flies over and down into the eye with a passenger or two.

I don’t know what Tsunami or Red Hot can do with their powers to help, and I don’t really know what any of the team can really do about the incredible damage this tornado is doing. I’m kinda hoping that Mitch’s friendship with Corey is the key to success, though I can’t foresee how that key might be applied.

    • Michael

“I’m kinda hoping that Mitch’s friendship with Corey is the key to success, though I can’t foresee how that key might be applied.”

I’m hoping it’s “through the medium of hugs”, but that’s probably unlikely.

      • Sanbai

        Pfffttt, HUGS ARE ALWAYS LIKELY!

        • Michael

Maybe afterwards, but not while the traumanado is still tearing up the city.

          • omg Traumanado is my new favorite super power 🙂

          • Keneu

Much better than Sharknado, at least.

          • Tyler Griffin

I dunno, sounds to much like “Trump” to me. I get queasy feelings when I hear that word?name…

    • Klaus

This is not a hurricane. You can not count on a calm eye reaching all the way to the top. Especially if Cory notices them approaching and feel threatened.

  • Chris Dangerfield

@Hours:disqus said it! “Adam and Vero killing on this page. Wow.” Well, and the last page and the one before and… this is really special work guys. Alex, honestly, this is as exciting as anything we’ve seen. Standing ovation.

Panel #1: I honestly thought you guys had taken “armageddon” to its delicious point in the last page and boy was I delightfully wrong. This is amazing. I love that the emotional and physical center point is still exactly where it was before. CORY’s pain. In fact it was kinda wonderful to have to take a minute to parse this panel down and down and down to see that the center is now this much smaller spot amidst a MUCH bigger maelstrom. The use of scale and perspective in this panel is amazing. Those trucks tell us everything about how big this has gotten. AND how far above the (now non-existent) roof tops we’ve gotten. Adam this is amazing, but Vero the fact that your color keeps all this chaos distinct, clear and understandable is a work of art. You guys make the hardest work seem so easy. Brava(o). And Alex… talk about taking the tension up and up. Wow. This is not the predictable little backstory it might have been many pages ago. So awesome.

Panel #2: I love this little bit of backstory and worldbuilding. A new superhero term, “fugue.” It makes perfect sense in context. Kanya adding to it. Again compliments on their expressions and the tension in their body posture. It supports everything they’re saying and what’s happening around them.

Panel #3: Love this info. Love the acknowledgment that being a ‘super’ isn’t effortless. That ‘training’ and ‘will’ matter. It helps so much to know, and makes it more like any skill that needs work to master. Whether one wrestles to control their temper, or works to master a musical instrument. It says that everything is the same. A skill worth having requires work and personal dedication. Like art (my attempt at irony) … I suspect that OUR threesome have spent some time honing their craft. (well maybe Alex came out of the womb penning LGBTQ superhero stories… but normally… lol). And I love that Mitch’s face reflects his heart. Such sympathy in that “There, but for the grace of…whomever, go I…” Sort of way. Totally concerned about the fate of the city and no judgement of Cory melt-down. Just understanding. Somebody else said it earlier, but I want to echo, Mitch is definitely superhero material in the making. Biggest heart. This is definitely the same guy who took Kyle aside at the end of the main story and told him his gay-secret. A big enough heart to let his friend know he’s NOT alone.

Panel #4: I swear. After Kyle in the warehouse, I saw that YP signal and gave a little (out loud) gasp. It really signals to us the moment when that character has to admit that the world is too big for them alone. It’s that moment many of us have had when on the young side of adult. I can remember being young and inexperienced and realizing that a date had gone very wrong and fled the dude’s house and had to suck up my pride and call another friend and admit I was freaked and beg for a ride home. In some form it’s the primal lesson of why it’s good to have friends and family (blood or created), but people you can count on to bail you out when the world gets too damn big. And it does. Oh how it does.

Panel #5: I like how Mitch is staring at the signal button and his face says his conflict so clearly to me — regret that he has to do this and that feeling of failure we all get (right or wrong) and also that relief that he has this option. I also like Kanya’s sideways glance that signals so clearly… “WTF?” I mean is that a nuclear trigger or… what? Great faces here. This panel made me feel for Kanya for the first time. She’s so far out of her depth and she knows it. She may be tough, but this is truly armageddon and she’s not dumb. She KNOWS what is at stake. I feel her fear.

Panel #6: Mitch’s face here is, once again, young Harrison Ford at his best (or pick your actor) just pure determination. I love that he says it out loud. I’M NOT ENOUGH BY MYSELF (who is?). And the admission that he should have known better. I’m sure he’s expecting the worst from his teammates, just as Kyle did. This is any of us learning and growing. As we joked, “adulting” is harddddddd. This is a 15 year-old with a face of a much older man, as he (for a moment) makes the right (hard) choice. I love the nuance of this. Really well done you guys.

My full congratulations team YP… this page is spectacular. Thank you for ending my week with complete devastation. It required nothing less (okay kidding), I love this page. So very worth the excited wait for it. I love it when the page is better than you had even wished for. Thanks!

    • Michael

While I agree with everything, Chris, I must point out that “fugue” is not a new term, or even a specifically “superhero” term. Anyone can experience a fugue-state (psychologically defined as “a state of personality dissociation characterised by amnesia”) in the wake of massive physical or psychological trauma. It’s interesting that Mitch is familiar with the term, but I wouldn’t call it new or specific to superheroes.

Maybe it’s more common in superheroes because heroism tends to lead to psychologically traumatising situations, or because the mental trauma more easily translate in telekinetics to a recognisable physical result.

      • Chris Dangerfield

That’s too well thought out for my humble comment. I simply meant that it was a good “new” term for this world, this AU, and these characters within the context of THIS story. We haven’t had to really experience anyone ‘coming into their powers’ in YP. So, I thought this was a very appropriate place and time for its use in this world.

That said, your analysis is correct.

    • I feel like we’re watching (insert music contest TV show of choice here) unfold, but instead of singing, it’s art, and every week we think “there’s no way they can top that”…and then they do, again. Standing ovation indeed!

  • Klaus

Shouldn’t they be lying as flat as they can get, rather than sticking their heads up into the hurricane?

    • Tyler Griffin

Sure! right after they put on those hard hats, steel toes and ear plugs from the the caution sign 😛 hehehe

  • Klaus

We have seen Amanda talking a traumatized boy back to somewhat normal once. I hope she can do it again.

  • Jeldenil

Hmmm, trying to think of a scenario of what the team can do. This is my theory:
Amanda must contact Cory and try to calm him doen while Tsu counters the tornado, with a little help from Fluke’s luck. Spooky has his potions to maybe help Diego survive. And Kyle … burns the evidence?

  • Saxon_Brenton

Well, fortunately Alex we’ve already got a pretty good idea how the rest of the team will react, because we’ve seen it in the YP:Truth or Dare bonus comic. And on that note, I’m cheered but not particularly surprised by Flyboy finally calling in the rest of his team when he admits to himself that he needs assistance. During comments on the YP:ToD comic I flat out snarked that Flyboy was among the bravest of the team, and dammit I see nothing here to revise my opinion. If anything, this situation doesn’t have the mitigating factor of the knowledge of Flyboy’s extra-curricular superheroing being magicked away, such that it would make all Tsunami’s yelling bearable like the last time Tsu got in his face.

Edit: Also: totally called it three pages back when I speculated on the maelstrom growing and taking out a city block or more 😛

  • Klaus

How are they going to get there in time? The YP plane has no motor.

    • bronakopdin

it doesn’t? I mean sure they are probably faster with Mitch doing the steering and powering but do you think they really created this absolutely dependent on him?
He could be sick or wounded or whatever and then the ship would be useless, you think they’d build sth like that?
Or well they might have a second one that can be used by anyone but that seems like a budget no-no xD

      • Klaus

        http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-34/

No motor to be seen, and no room for fuel. Jet engines use lots of fuel.

        • bronakopdin

maybe there can be sth docked from the outside if needed lol or they really have a second one though I somehow think that’d be inefficient still…

        • Tyler Griffin

Jedi Mind Trick gesture *aLiEn TeChNoLoGy*

    • Saxon_Brenton

Good point; hadn’t thought of that.
[desperately handwaves] Since this isn’t happening during the Crisis of Colliding Trans-World identities, maybe the other superteams are available, and Commander can call up a favour to have someone else teleport them in?

    • Maybe he’s close to home this time.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Okay…
      • The YP cycles… they’d all look hot on their own motorcycle.
      • The YP Scooby Van
      • Squeezing into Spooky’s convertible, which presumable drives on roads when Mitch is not available to fly it.
      • That account they keep with the taxi company for just such a need.
      • YP Mopeds would be adorbs, but not quite so sexy. 😀
      • Or Amanda has secretly been monitoring Mitch, you know just because she cares, and they are actually already there and waiting for him to do the adult thing.

      • Tyler Griffin

All things considered, I think Amanda would have stepped in when Mitch got shot if she was monitoring this, certainly as soon as she realized a super was going Nova in the middle of a population center

        • Chris Dangerfield

Ahhhh… maybe? But she’s is definitely not “Mommy.” I can certainly imagine her being wise enough to be telling the rest of the team “No, no, no… not yet… let him choose………” all while biting her lip and willing Mitch to push the button. We all have to learn.

    • Madock345

Maybe Spooks can open up a Gate like PP did, but he usually doesn’t because it takes a lot of power and Mitch is usually around to do that kind of thing?

  • bronakopdin

yet another awesome page!!! I just love all these details a lot! They make it seem so real it’s stunning 😀
For Mitch to call the rest of the team I’m not only happy that they’ll get backup and and not only proud of his discernment yet again but also somewhat surprised… With my only reason being I thought this is happening before the Truth or Dare bonus story… but right now I can’t remember whether we ever got a time named for this night? It might have just been too long so I can’t remember though… Yet it must be afterwards now, right? Or else they wouldn’t have been clueless at the other comic? Sure they forgot about it again after that night which is why this will be yet again a big deal between them (thank god)… we’ll see! I bet the real reactions will only be shown after they calmed down this situation!
I really hope they’ll be able to stop Cory’s poriomania! Maybe Amanda can talk to him! And maybe Paul’s luck will help out 😀

  • Ninhursag

I love Mitch, he’s mature enough to recognise that he’s over his head with this.

    • Derkins

He may be one of the more mature members of the team to be honest. Certainly moreso than fluke, Gordon, and maybe even Kyle.

      • Klaus

Spooky and Fluke both consider Fluke more mature than Kyle.

        • Derkins

yeah just not sure I necessarily agree with them. :p
Maybe more battle-mature, sure, but not emotionally. They seem on par if you ask me, going off of the various conflicts the gang has had. Paul and Kyle have very different approaches to conflict, but both are somewhat misguided. Kyle being self-depreciating, and Paul being a little blind-sighted and arrogant/aggressive (I say with affection). In both those scenarios Mitch on the other hand showed much more maturity in his perspective and support (when Kyle needed rescuing, and with the plane argument, and really even with the truth or dare game questions).

          • Klaus

It was not battle they were talking about. http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3pt1-page-10/

          • Derkins

hm, yeah. Kyle does seem the most sensitive, and has been the most naive historically. fair enough.

he’s been growing up a lot lately, though! I definitely had more of our “recent kyle” in mind — the one who we left on the battlefield, vs the guy who needed to be snapped out of all that back on the cliff. and while Paul may have more emotional resilience from not having to remain repressed his whole life (in order to protect others), my point was only that his perspective wasn’t much more grounded than Kyle’s. They were both doing some victim-blaming back then, if I remember correctly. Paul was doing the, “I mean what were you thinking??” thing, while Spooky had the maturity to say what Kyle actually needed to hear. Maybe Paul wasn’t naive enough to get himself into a similar situation (again, not that he would even have any motivation to be in such a predicament), but he didn’t have the head to see past the mistake of it, either.

I also think that Kyle has a lot of inner depth that the guys haven’t really seen much of, *because* he’s been repressed and withholding of himself. he may seem naive from his discomfort and inexperience, but really he has to have an incredible amount of self-control and awareness to continue has he has. and they likely didn’t understand why he was that way, as clearly his sex life wasn’t something he was boasting about (spooky likely having more insight than the others from how close they are).

So, what I think I’ve learned from this conversation is that it’s hard to rate people on a maturity scale, lol. There are a lot of factors that come into play apparently :p

          • Chris Dangerfield

I agree. Kyle has POWER. He has power I don’t even think he really appreciates the limits of. Spooky might be the only one who has a sense of how much power he (/Kyle) has that could harm but “doesn’t” because they have good hearts. That’s why their relationship is so important.

I remember thinking that in the very beginning…

            http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch1-page-5/

            http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch1-page-6/

            http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch1-page-7/

I mean who can do THAT? He sucks the entire inferno into himself as easy as breathing… as if it’s nothing. Adam and Vero do an amazing job of showing how HUGE the fire is, but Kyle just consumes it, just (*snaps*) like that. And then, when Amanda says, “Well done.” He grins like a kid told, “good job.” All cute and proud.

So I agree that this is a young man with no sense of his own power, his own potential and he just wants to be liked (wants love) and that innocence leaves him so open to Duncan and all that follows.

So I agree that Mitch, while younger, seems more aware of human nature, even at his age. While Kyle reminds me so much of me. I wanted to believe that everyone was good and meant what they said and it took some real life experience (painful) to learn that not everyone was good people.

Kyle’s face is so sweet in that fourth panel of the last page I linked. Just pure kid-like pleasure at having done his job. “Hi guys!!!”

Dude you just sucked an inferno into yourself and saved a city block. He has no idea. He’s that innocent. That sweet.

            Such a great character.

          • Klaus

Ah yes. I remember well how impressed I was. He is not just a human flame thrower. He can control fire.

  • Nate

    Ho-lee… that’s an incredible panel.

And it looks like Flyboy is using his head. I think the best person to call in would be the Commander. She’d be able to reach Cory, metaphorically and literally, since her powers have a pretty decent range. And she may be able to calm him down.

Second choice would be Spooks, third Fluke.

(Sorry, Kyle, but pyrokinesis isn’t really useful here. And Gordon… is Gordon. 😛 )

    • Chris Dangerfield

      “And Gordon… is Gordon. :P”

Well said *grins*, truer words and all that!

    • Tyler Griffin

Hey, if we start setting the debris on fire as it’s circulating, and the momentum keeps building, we could really have something here. Why this little bundle of feels here could create a disaster that the President would pay us TRILLIONS to prevent. Heck, we could go international. We could TAKE OVE- … *crickets chirping* Oh, wrong side of the battle field again? My bad. *slinks off to find PP and Duncan*

  • Cydney Sabin

I know this is completely irrelevant, but I keep wondering which direction the tornado is spinning.

    • Looking at the wind current you can see in some panels, in this and last two pages, I say it’s spinning counterclockwise. You can sometimes see where the wind ends, example in first panel here.

      • Cydney Sabin

Actually, to the contrary, it seems to be spinning clockwise in the first panel. Imagining a corkscrew and assuming everything is moving upwards, the way it spirals says to me clockwise.

        • Its chaos.

        • *lol* ..is this going to be a ‘is the dress white or blue’ thing? I keep seeing the windflow in the first panel come up from the middle and then spin counterclockwise, to end up in the left corner.

          • Cydney Sabin

            It’s blue I tell ya!

          • Tyler Griffin

the dress was white and black. 😛

        • Derkins

I can really see it either way in this panel. Reminds me of the “left-brain/right-brain” spinning ballerina thing o-o

    • davefragments

      Counterclockwise.

    • Klaus

Both, I think. This is not a natural tornado.

  • Klaus

I just reread page 4. There was something I had forgotten. Unless he closes his eyes and concentrates, Flyboy’s super hearing only works on what he is looking at. That is why Kanya caught him by surprise.

    • He just needs to train it more. I think most people are more concerned with his sight and flying abilities that hey haven’t really done much with the hearing abilities.

      • Klaus

Maybe he has trained himself to focus his hearing to avoid being overwhelmed by information.

        • Takehai

Actually, I just saw an interesting show online that talked about this. The human brain basically is so sight oriented, that unless we concentrate on hearing and close our eyes, our sense of sight will actually dictate what we hear.
They demonstrated this by showing a video of a woman saying “ga”, while playing an audio track of her saying “ba”. Due to the disparity of what the eyes saw versus what was actually being played, I heard her saying “la”, one of my friends heard “fa”, and another “tha”.
          It was actually quite fascinating.

          • Michael

As someone with hearing impairment, I can relate to this. If someone is standing with their back to a bright light, I literally can’t hear them, or I hear only faint gibberish. Hearing is tied to sight a lot more than most people think, even for people with normal hearing. That’s why so many people are so deeply offended by dubbed foreign movies where the dubbed dialogue does not match up with the actors lips. And why, after a bit of experience with subtitled movies, you eventually stop seeing the subtitle words at all. I once fooled myself into thinking I could understand Chinese because I stopped actively noticing the subtitles… until I turn away from the screen and used hearing alone. *eyeroll*

  • Derkins

Good call Mitch, it’s about time! He needs the commander. She’d get through to him.

  • You know, since this happens shortly before Kyle was reveiled in having secrets, I kinda think this could explain a little of Gordon’s excessive respons to Kyle. He was still a major douche in how he behaved, not many excuses there, but two people on his team has kept something pretty major from him (and the rest). Two under his care. Not only that, Mitch had promissed them that he’d stop doing this.

And based on the main arc, it looks like Mitch got off fairly easy, and – noty couting the personal traumas – ity looks like Kyle won’t get much disciplinary ‘punishment’ neither. For someone so focused on safety and control that must have his head about to explode xD

    • Derkins

And of course we know Gordon specifically has issues with what Mitch is doing, making it that much worse.

  • Any chance we could get a tutorial on drawing chaotic debris like this???

    • Derkins

heh I think it’s called a long dedicated career in illustration :p
these artists are so accomplished I just feel shamed by it most of the time, as an artist myself. no, not really.
      well, maybe kinda.

      • ._. That.. comment was unnecessary.

        • Klaus

As are all comments here. Many are a joy to read, but none are necessary.

          • >.> Okay Mr philosophical.

          • Oki, everyone in this thread, no need to squabble over this. Let’s just focus on how Stormy admire the art skills, and would like to learn more on how to do it 🙂

          • Derkins

totally not meaning to squabble. attempted to make disclaimers above. i’m trying to get kinda deep, danish, but i may be utterly failing lol not sure

          • I just started doing art in April. I mean, I’ve always doodled with charcoals, clay, paint, whatever, but digital art brought all those things together and has become like a new lover to me. With that said…chaotic debris are WAAAAY out of my ability. When I try it always looks too organized. I’m trying though. Figure practice makes perfect. Would be cool to get tutorials though ;).

I have several pieces of fan art…but I’m too afraid to hand them in cause I feel inadequate. I think I’ve mentioned I might hand them in at least twice :3…then I don’t. Cause I’m a coward : /.

          • I don’t think people understand how vulnerable art can make the artist. After all the heart drives the pencil… so I’ve heard anyway… If it makes you nervous, don’t show it. Instead show to people you trust 🙂

          • I think that’s why all my stuff was either for friends, or an art trade :). You can trust friends, and best friends know how to give criticism without butchering your motivation to learn.

I think I’ll work up the guts eventually :3..just not at this exact moment, lol.

Nice to meet other artist on here though! I love the amazing art in these comics <3. and the story of course ^_^.

          • If you’ve made some TYP fanart, I hope you’ll share it some day 🙂 If you don’t post it anywhere first, you can email Alex the art, and he’ll put it up in the Fanart section (can be found above the page). If you post it elsewhere first, and just send Alex a link, you can read how to do it in the lower half of the FAQ. About crediting Fanart/fanfics.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            @StormyHotWolf88:disqus
            @Derkins:disqus

I think all these thoughts are exactly true of almost all artists in every genre. I have worked with and am friends with many artists of different sorts, writers, illustrators, painters, etc… and I’ve found that by the time they are willing to share ANYTHING with me they have gone over it with a fine tooth comb and ripped it to shreds themselves. Anything negative I might say is quite superfluous.

It’s why my feedback leans to the positive or, at worst, to a question. Because I know that AW, Adam and Vero have questioned every line, every color, every word, well before I’ve seen it. And, in the end, “feedback” is not about telling an artist “how you would have done it,” but rather sharing how “what they chose to do, made YOU feel.”

So, I very much agree. I’ve written and I’ve shared (and I’m not an experienced writer), so I get it. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And people were nice to me.

It’s also very hard to seriously question a work-in-progress like YP. When you look at any page and imagine how it will read and feel when bound in a book?

The entire experience will be different again.

            Interesting discussion, thanks all.

        • Derkins

I honestly meant it in the friendliest possible way, and largely out of respect to the artists who have truly dedicated their lives to their craft. though back pedaling a bit, i admit tutorials are super helpful with learning new techniques, and are nothing to turn the nose up at. sharing information between artists is a wonderful thing that should happen more often.

but … (alex may correct me if I’m wrong, and i may get a slap on the wrist from the moderators, not sure) … i’m not sure it’s appropriate to ask these professionals for such a thing? at least for free. you totally didn’t say “for free,” so I’m perhaps assuming too much from your short comment. I was just thinking that it’s their livelihood, and it’s something they are working to produce at the height of their ability. that it’s meant to be admired, and to set a bar for other artists, and surely (hopefully) inspire them, as it has inspired you (and me)! you can’t help but gawk at the mastery that is present every single week. we can try to imitate it, but there is not shortcut for learning that level of mastery. it takes the 10,000 hours.

but … perhaps they would be willing to offer little tutorials as a patreon bonus, or something, I wonder. you’re right that would totally get artist-fans jazzed, and there are definitely design shortcuts that can snazz up one’s already accomplished work, for sure (given the elbow grease and experimentation is already part of your artist culture). actually, have you ever checked out Bittbox.com? Awesome free design resource, with professional textures and brushes, etc.

anyway, truly sorry if i have come across as condescending or anything — that is not my intention. I jus like to overthink things.

          • ::smiles:: It’s fine, thanks. I admit I was a bit hurt. I did spend the thousands on an art degree and yet I do find chaotic illustration difficult.

          • Derkins

aw yeah, sorry. and dude I get it. I’m trying to incorporate a bit more chaos into my aesthetic these days, and let go of my inner control-freak a bit. it’s so hard!

        • Chris Dangerfield

          Nope, it was right on.

It was a kind and honest response. Nothing worth having is easy. Adam and Vero have spent a life-time refining their artistic skills…

lucky us. Unlike so many, they are willing to illustrate LGBTQ characters extremely gracefully on a weekly basis

Not to harsh any artist… but there are many tutorials to help us all realize our art in the future.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Fair enough. Apologies.

          • Derkins

lol I almost invoked your name in this conversation, tbh. I knew you’d get it ^.^

  • Homoaesthete

Is it just me, or is our little Flyboy suddenly starting to look a bit… older?

  • Connor

Oh my god, that last panel. It’s finally done it. I’m now officially following in Doki’s footsteps.

  • Kate G

Holy hurricanes, Batman! Talk about a tornado!

It’s interesting that he talks about losing his powers being about not having enough training and being strong. I think part of losing control is also about the strength of your emotions and your age too. Teenagers are going to have more violent and stronger reactions than adults. A teenager’s hormones fluctuate so strongly and their brains are developing so quickly that overreaching emotions are normal; I would assume crazy bursts in power would be normal too, especially if that person just found out about their power (late-developing powers.) Cory IS a teen.

AAAAAAAAAAAND I am back from the Special Olympics. My hotel has the worst mattresses on planet Earth which means I got horrible sleep. My back is absolutely killing me from those wretched mattresses, but the food at the restaurant the inn is connected to was phenomenal (what little I could stomach, that is.)

To give y’all perspective on how long my wait was, I woke up at 5:30 AM to get ready (not that I wasn’t up much.) It took me 1.5 hours to get ready (hair, makeup, outfit, etc.) Got to the arena at 8 am; competition started at 9 am. I was in Division 20 (out of 23 y’all) in the English Equitation class. I didn’t compete until 11:30-ish. Scooby and I took home a gold medal for my barn!

Where we competed was a nice facility (indoor heating! air conditioning!) but it’s definitely set up for Western riding over English. The facility does English riding, but I felt like I was penned in!

    • Klaus

Congratulations! And I hope your back recovers quickly.

      • Kate G

        Thanks!

It’s probably nothing an extra-extra-long shower with an actual shower head that pounds water into your muscles and not that shitty “rain head”-like head I had last night. NO PRESSURE, I tell you, no pressure. I just stared at the shower head like, “WTF?” To all you rain head lovers, I’m sorry, I just can’t join you; I don’t see the appeal. Add in a lidocaine patch and my own mattress and I should be good as new in the morning! Well, afternoon.

    • Jeldenil

      Wooot! Congrats!

      • Kate G

        Thanks!

    • Tyler Griffin

      Congrats!

      • Kate G

        Thank you!

    • Congratulations Kate!

    • Ninhursag

      Awesome Kate, bravo!

      • Kate G

        Thanks Ninhursag!

    • I agree with everything you said. We think normal teenagers with changing hormones are bad? Super-powered teens must be 1000× more difficult to handle on THEIR bad days.

And woohoo!! Congratulations on your gold medal!! That must’ve been exciting!! (And going back to your own bed must have been as well! :P)

      • Kate G

My bed was very well cherished. Nothing like your own bed, y’know? It was exciting after I processed everything (but also very tiring!)

    • Michael

Congratulations on the gold medal win! You must be so proud.

      • Kate G

Thanks and I am! It was hard to wipe a smile off my face after it sunk in.

  • Jason Moon

Oooh man, he’s gonna get it…

  • Tyler Griffin

could we maybe get a shot of Ivan being tossed around like a rag doll in all of this. It’s mostly his fault so I’d find it very…. satisfying 😛

    • Klaus

According to the list of characters, Ivan is in the picture. I haven’t spottet him, though.

      • Michael

Next to the trucks etc. in the tornado, he’d be an indistinguishable speck of debris.

  • chicgeek

Just chiming in after reading your post about why you do the bonus stories, and I have to say I agree. I read, I don’t participate in the forum, I love the story. I’ve found that with comics that go on hiatus, eventually I quit checking back in. I don’t mean to quit, but it just gradually happens. Sometimes it’s ‘oh, yeah, that comic! I wonder if they’re back yet!’ Bonus stories give us sometime to see, keeps us coming back every week. I understand why creators take breaks. Better to take breaks than burn out! This is a lot of extra work and money for you, and I appreciate what you’re doing. Thank you! Besides, bonus stories are fun. I like seeing the spotlight on individuals, giving them a chance to shine. And the backstory really adds a lot to the comic.
That being said, one shot guest comics or fan art is also nifty, if you need a short break. Whatever works for you!

    • Brian Hopkins

Sausalito ice guy—do I detect another bonus story?

      • At the end of next ‘volume’, yes 🙂

        • Michael

Maybe Tsunami’s backstory? Ice + water? I do wonder what exactly was eating him up at the end of the ToD bonus.

  • Pikinanou

I’m guessing that… Spooky will answer the call. Considering the events of the Truth or Dare comic, we can guess that it’s not Commander, since she didn’t know about his after-hours work, nor did Tsunami. I don’t see how Fluke powers or Kyle’s could help here, so…
Just a wild guess. What you guys think? 🙂

    • Klaus

Fluke’s powers could help in any situation. And this may be after the truth or dare comic.

      • It is after the ToD comic, but before the main comic.

        • Pikinanou

Is that so? Okay then, nevermind what I said earlier. I say Commander will answer the call 🙂 She’ll shutdown Cory’s brain and make him go to sleep! Calling it! 😀

        • Kate G

Wait, didn’t Commander know about his after-hours work the first time? In the ToD comic, she said something along the lines of, “I wasn’t aware you had gone back to doing that?”

          • His after-hours hero work was the reason why he got kicked off his first team. In the ToD arc, his Truth was that he had not stopped doing his after hours hero work.

          • Kate G

            Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

  • Oh man, what is that device for? Cancelling out powers? I wonder.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Poor Sausalito.

    • I’m sure Sausalito knows exactly what its done. 😛

  • jreed3842

Hey guys! I’m here asking for healing thoughts! I have 14 mm kidney stone and this afternoon they blasted it with sound waves. I’m hurting pretty badly (but not badly enough to miss camping tomorrow!)
But I figured getting some extra healing thoughts wouldn’t hurt. 🙂

    • Of course and given!! Feel better soon!!

      • jreed3842

        Thanks, AJ! You’re the best!!

        • I try! 🙂

        • Chris Dangerfield

Agreed AJ is the best… ask her to make you waffles… that always helps!!

          • Mmmm, waffles.

          • jreed3842

Oooo. I could really go for some waffles. Those sound delicious!

    • Chris Dangerfield

Oh you poor dude. THAT is the WORST. May it move through you quickly. There is pain and then there is PAIN, K-stones are among the worst. I recommend comfort food, rest, good books and make your significant other pamper you and treat you well.

      Feel better soonest! x, C

      • jreed3842

I will try to follow all your recommendations. Haha! Thanks for the well wishes!

    • Klaus

You have my best wishes, for what it’s worth..

      • jreed3842

Thanks, Klaus! It actually means a lot to me. 🙂

    • Mir

Water. Water. And then even more water.

      • jreed3842

Yes! That’s all I’ve been drinking. Water is definitely my savior right now! Ha.

      • Michael

To quote Homer Simpson, “water, water, everywhere, so let’s all have a drink” 😀

    • Michael

I hope they at least use classy sound waves, like Pavarotti or Domingo or Dame Kiri.

      • jreed3842

        Thanks, Michael!
I hope they used classy waves too… My kidney stones deserve only the classiest of waves. Ha.
But, alas, I will never know because they knocked me out for the whole procedure!

        • Michael

Ugh, if they knocked you out first, they probably used Nicki Minaj, her screeching would make even kidney stones shrivel up in pain.

          • davefragments

I just started reading Galbreath’s CAREER OF EVIL and it has lots of lyrics by Blue Oyster Cult.
How about they use — Veterans of the Psychic Wars —

    • davefragments

My brother had that done. He said his kidney stone broke easily but passing the bits did not feel good. Drink lots of water.

      • jreed3842

That’s pretty much all I have been doing. Hopefully, the pain won’t be too unbearable!

  • davefragments

The “South Park” powers that be are looking for “Slash/Yaoi/Tweek + Craig” submissions to be shown on national TV.

Now wouldn’t that be a great thrill? (sarcasm)

    • davefragments

Coming back to this, maybe it isn’t bad if some aspiring artist or super-fan gets a chance to have their artwork on national TV.

  • theunrealist

Hey, I hate be that poster but when will young protectors go out of hiatus? I completely understand the lack of funding and these guys worked really hard to come out with a fantastic free comic for young adults and teens but its been more that six months and still no word and its a bit unsettling. Maybe if the comic didn’t end on a cliffhanger I’d feel more secure with two bonus comics but I’ve done the crowdfund thing for video games, web comics, etc that ultimately gets abandoned without harsh feelings. Life happens and people need to eat. 😉 It saddens me that we may never see an actual ending to a great series. Side tip: never end a series on a cliffhanger with an uncertain future. Haha. I only wish the writers and artists the best!

  • This takes place after the ToD comic and before the current story.

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-flyboy-bonus-page-2/

    • Ah! I had a memory lapse and had long forgotten that page of this bonus comic. Thank you Doki for being my index 😉
I wonder how much longer after ToD this is. It would be horribly ironic if it wasn’t long at all… Though of course, none of our heroes would realise that — y’know, memory loss and all 😛

  • Saxon_Brenton

I’ve been thinking about this for a few days. So with time running out before the next update, I’ll make a stab at this…

The key comments are in panels 2-3. With Corey’s powers running amok and him speculated to be in a fugue state, Kanya compares the situation to the guy with ice powers who destroyed the town of Sausalito, and then Flyboy confirms that this is a risk when you’re strong and don’t have any training.

And I’m thinking to myself… There’s a known risk of this sort of thing, but you have a situation where (a) corporate sponsored superteams can turn down potential recruits because they have problems and therefore might be inconvenient for publicity relations, and (b) the only other source of training seems to be the single team of rejects run by Commander. Are we supposed to assume there are no other options? No private schools that do training simply for safe use of powers but without needing their graduates to become superheroes? No publicly run schools that do the same?

I realise I’m overthinking things. Those sort of story options have been written about in everything from PS238 to the New Mutants/New X-Men to Avengers: The Initiative, so re-hashing them – while not necessarily cliche – would be re-treading old ground. (And I am also amused by the fact that if Alex were writing Young Protectors as a school-based story that he’d have to come up with a way to get past the teachers taking care of the problem rather than the teen-hero protagonists in a manner that directly parallels the use of the Crisis of Collided Trans-World Identities to get rid of the adult heroes.)

Nevertheless, the text piece at the start of the vol.1 tradepaperback discusses the way that the superhero teams program was set up to deal with the problem of the rise of supervillains. But neither that text piece, nor what we’re seeing in-story, seems to address the related problem of teaching people with dangerous powers how to use them safely.

    • Doki had a rant of sorts about that training issue a LONG time ago….I think I even had a title for that ‘rant’.

    • Holly

Let’s all watch the braniac scene from “Justice League: Gods and Monsters.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYSxN4ezhO4

Actually I have a short story I’m working on that is about a girl on a super team who can’t return to her home planet, even when it’s in crisis. Until it’s eventually revealed that when her mother passed when she was 4 she destroyed a city, because he abilities were empathic. She is very just and moral, but the people of her home think she is a monster. Which is kind of what strikes me about untrained heroes.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’m over the worst of my cold now, but I should still try to get a good night’s sleep, so no camping for me this time around either. Have a good time, everybody!

    • Night stick, I am about to pass out as well. No camping for me either.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hope you slept well, Doki!

        • Well at least I didn’t wake up to trying to argue with a televangelist again…. -_- There is no reason with those people…

    • Night Sticky! Glad you’re feeling better!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you! 😀

    • davefragments

      take care

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thanks, Dave!

    • jreed3842

      Sleep well!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you! 🙂

  • Finally sitting down, but I have to get up in another couple of minutes. ARG!!

  • jreed3842

jreed3842 reporting for camping! *pulls out the marshmallows*

    • Suppose marshmallows go good on top of bbq burgers & onion rings?

      • jreed3842

Hmmm. They could…. Go ahead and give it a shot. *Tosses some marshmallows to you*&

        • Well since the burgers aren’t done yet, I’ll just *shoves marshmallows into my mouth*

          • jreed3842

That’s the way to do it! *keeps shoveling marshmallows into my mouth* 🙂

          • davefragments

            sugar puffed air

          • I’ve made marshmallows. well the cheating variety without corn syrup. the kitchenaid ran for a goodlong while beating it all

          • davefragments

            interesting

          • But they were yummy!

          • *grabs bag and runs*

  • Elizabeth

got all of my homework done in time to camp! yay!

  • davefragments

    I’m watching chopped.
One of the cooks broke a blender.

    • How did that happen?

      • davefragments
