The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 21

95 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Flyboy Bonus Comic—Page 21

Kanya returns! 🙂

Over at the Patreon page, $5+ backers got a chance to download a cool pin-up of Fluke in action. It was a lot of fun trying to come up with a way to show Fluke’s powers visually. Comments included: “Great job showing the combination of Fluke’s powers and athleticism!”, “I love the intricacy of this piece.  At first glance it’s just a super cool action shot, but after looking a little longer I could make out the chain reaction of how it all happened.  There was obviously a lot of thought put into this bad-assery,” and “Awesome! This really is a good exploration of the sorts of things a “luck” based power might be useful for. A water bottle gets thrown in the air, where it stops the hatted thug’s knife and makes the other thug slip over; meanwhile, two thugs mis-aim and hit each other instead of Fluke. And in the middle of all that, Fluke shows off his natural athleticism and rippling, rock-hard thighs. Mmm.”

Here’s a sneak preview of that:

Also, one last shout out before the month is over and it’s too late: I’m going to be sending out a high-res version of Flyboy’s Romance card art to this month’s $10+ backers of my Patreon page. Here’s the sneak peek of that:

And all backers will be sent a digital wallpaper of the Full Monty Spooky pin-up ($10+ backers get sent a high-res version too with double the resolution) once Patreon lets me know their payments have cleared. Here’s the sneak preview of that:

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! Kanya’s back and she’s going to be the one giving the orders now! Or is she? Will she be an ally to Flyboy? How will Ivan react to her return? And what dance move is Diego pulling in the back of panel 2 and will he be willing to teach it to us?!

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Oh, dayum. That’s a plot twist. BAMF!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Nice work, Danish!

      • Thanks 🙂 Good thing I didn’t crash yet.

    • Michael

you beat me to the BAMF comment, too.

  • Uh oh!

  • Who’s gonna play the next card in this strange game of poker?

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m hoping that somebody will step out from among those boxes holding a gun on Kanya, and then somebody else will be pointing a gun at them, and then I’m not sure where it would go from there.

      • Who has the upper hand, and best bet, does seem to change by the minute.

      • davefragments

That’s like a circular firing squad.
I wouldn’t trust anyone of those twitchy fingers.

        • Tyler Griffin

I trust Kanya, actually. Apparently she is aware that she works for the mod, and thus is very likely to have a “tie up ALL loose ends” mentality, but she has remained calm and collected throughout all of this. She is, therefore the most reasonable of the group and seems to be intelligent enough to be negotiable.

          • davefragments

I think Kanya is working for the guys lying on the floor knocked out. I think her reinforcements are also bad guys — the guys that Ivan is trying to rob.

          • Tyler Griffin

This I am well aware of. I still trust her. She is calm and clever. Knowing her allegiance is to the mob actually makes it easier to trust her, in this case, because know (more or less) what she wants. SO we can better guess what she will do and plan accordingly.

  • davefragments

She returns! And with a big gun pointing leaden death at “our gang” of monologging miscreants.
And sh’s one thought talking lady cop!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Lady security guard, I believe.

      • davefragments

I misspelled the living daylights out of that comment.

  • Guys, I would believe her. She doesn’t look like she would hesitate to shoot.

    • stickfigurefairytales

And *she’s* holding her gun with both hands, which means she can aim and fire it effectively unlike SOME MORONS.

      • 🙂

      • Well, Ivan is a baboon with a stick and as Danish said below: Kanya’s a BAMF!

      • Kate G

See? Someone was listening to me in the wings! *laughing*

  • Well, as much as I want to comment on the page now, this updated just as I was on my way to log off and finally get myself some good sleep. Going by the last 10-15mins, I’ve hit the wall very fast now. So I’m going to say goodnight, hopefully sleep for at least 7-8 hour, and then I’ll return with a more clear head and thoughts about this new twist.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Sleep well!

      • Thank you. Just realized it’s been over 36 hours since we got up in US, before going home, and besides a roughly 1½ hour nap and some dozing off, I haven’t slept during this time and the traveling. Waaah, a lot of sleeping to come now xD

  • DC

Diego does look like he could join a boy band with his dance moves in panel 2, but I doubt he or anyone could teach me to dance. I have 2 left feet.

    • davefragments

You sound like you would be great as the solo player in Peter Schikele’s Concerto for Banned Instruments.

      • DC

I could manage the water gargling at the end. I practice water gargling and singing at the same time in the shower 🙂

        • davefragments

I got the impression that the Lasso d’Amour might be your speed…

  • TwilightDreamer

    wahoo! early update! 😀
    well, didn’t see that coming…. O.O

  • kuku

She could well have called the cops for back-up before she arrived, too, right? I don’t know how far away Mitch set her down.

    • Klaus

So she does work for the owners of that safe. That is the mob. I do not think she has called the cops. Backup, yes, she is not stupid. But not the cops.

      • kuku

Oh, good point, not the cops – but yeah, she could well have called for back-up. Mob back-up? This could get even uglier.

  • Jeldenil

Called it. Talked too long there, Mitch.

  • Michael

Kanya’s a BAMF. Which is not surprising, if she’s hired to protect the mob(s assets).

  • Sapfo

Good morning good people! (And very good coffee by my side)
Well this is a happy new page day, but the actions seems to not be in favor of our young hero and not in the favor of the rest either it seems.

Just got back from a long trip from a very loving place, San Fransisco. It was great joy to meet you Alex and the young protector book now have a place of honor in my home 🙂

  • Kanya is probably a bad guy. She is still awesome.

Ivan really doesn’t understand what he’s dealing with, does he? He still thinks he’s king of the hill because he has a gun and he’s not afraid to use it. It hasn’t occurred to him that other people might be the same way, and also have had decent firearms training. I wonder what Kanya used to do for a living (or possibly even still does for a living) before being a security guard for the mob?

  • kamishiro

    what?? i truuusted youuu kanyaaa

    • Klaus

      • kamishiro

oh i was just being dramatic XDDDDD i’m a pisces person 😛

but kanya ” betrayal ” ( mitch saved her and well, kanya putting his life at more risk isn’t really good ) kind stung a litle . there is a few female characters ( and all characters are awesome )but so i got a little hyped seeing another strong female presence and i just assumed she was on mitch’s side.

  • Kate G

Uh oh, Ivan, you’re a dead man now. She’s got you locked in her sights and she surely will NOT miss. That’s holding the gun the RIGHT way.

MWA HA HA HA HA. Beat his sorry ass, Kanya. Do it! Do it! Do it!

But please let Mitchell go and nurse his very bruised ego. I’m sure he’s learned a lot of what NOT to do today.

    • Michael

Proper grip and stance maketh the gunslinger, as Shakespeare would have said were he exploring the Wild West somehow.

  • Michael

This page was definitely worth waiting for. That absolute look of no-bullshit nonchalance in Kanya’s closeup is just perfect, she’s not even fazed. The slightly-raised eyebrow, the almost bored expression.

“Yeah, whatever kid. You think you’re tough? You can’t even hold a gun properly. I go through ten of you a day just for basic training”.

The only appropriate reaction to Kanya’s reappearance is best put by Senator Clay Davis: shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

  • bronakopdin

I seriously didn’t expect her to be back!
At least not in this way!
Now it’s getting thrilling again?! Will there be more shooting? T___T

    • Tyler Griffin

I didn’t expect her to be back this quick and where’d the spare come from? Was there a silent alarm that none of our gang were aware of? Does Kanya secretly had reinforcements? Did she and Mitch work this out off panel? Is Gordon really a black market Mob Boss who is about to have to mind wipe his “little project” for accidentally learning to much?

      • bronakopdin

LOL about the last part xD

(and I think Kanya had the spare in the transporter that was standing in front of the “former door” which I first thought is the target of their assault xD)

      • AseretZone

Uh, Mitch looked as surprised as the others, I doubt he knew about this. We’ve been watching Mitch’s actions, he didn’t slip off at all.

  • Klaus

Be afraid, Ivan, be very afraid. She has no good reason not to shoot. And she looks like she actually knows how to hit what she aims for.

  • Alt+F7

Little do they expect that the warehouse door was also packing a spare as it lumbers out of the shadows.

  • purplefoxglove

Lessons in how to make a bad situation worse 101: Kanya style!

    • Michael

      OP, OP OP OP-OP

… riding an invisible horse the fuck outta there is about the wisest thing Mitch could do right now.

    • Samurai Jack

Not necessarily. She’s obviously not dumb. She called the cops, now she’s keeping the crooks from getting away or hurting anyone. At considerable risk to herself to boot. Let’s see where this goes.

      • purplefoxglove

Did she call the cops? I hope she did, but she doesn’t say so. We’ll see on Wednesday 🙂

  • Pikinanou

Flyboy: Note to self: next time, take the security guard to another country.

    • Tyler Griffin

AT LEAST tot he next county, or outside city limits.

  • Dennis Grace

Yak yak yak. You’ve got the drop on him, girl. Just say, “Drop the gun or I shoot.” If he does ANYTHING that isn’t dropping the gun, blow a hole in his chest.

  • glenroebuck

Remember when Anni and the PP had all the heroes on the ground knocked out and she wanted to kill them?? …Yeah I almost don’t either….these side stories are getting sooooooo dragged out. I used to check this site every wed and I just…don’t. I will check back in a year when the story might be close to being done.

    • Tyler Griffin

Toodles, don’t let the door bang ya on the butt! As much as I would love to get back to the main story, these interludes have been fun and they serve a very useful purpose. It’s easy to get engrossed in one project and over devote yourself to it to the point that you look up one day, realize it’s been a full year spent on one THING and suddenly feel like it’s a chore. I’d rather indulge in interludes that give some character depth that we don’t have time for in the main arc and not have Alex suffer from burn out.

      • glenroebuck

You can fan boy all you want but you know I am right. The whole ‘my darkest secret” thing was done to give them a break, and a different artist, now this…How many more of these do we have to put up with? Does each team member get a three month side panel story between the main story? Maybe if less time was spent charging for nudes of them and more in actual story it would be done. You want to tell orgin stories or side stories? Great! Tell them after the main one is done. The main story is what got me invested in this. Now it has been so long since I actually saw any of it or it moved forward I no longer care about what happens to anyone..and that is the death of good story telling.

        • TwoWayStar

each his own! I guess we’ll see you again when the comic is over, so have a happy life ^^ *waves goodbye*

        • Hey guys, just wanted to step in here for a brief second and remind everyone that disagreeing is not a problem so long as it remains respectful. Let’s watch the you statements. Thanks!

        • For all I’m concerned, the creators of this comic can do whatever they want with it as long as they keep going. There’s another online comic I really really liked that became too much for them to keep going. They gave their fans a written rundown of what was going to happen and how the story would end thankfully, but I do wish they hadn’t decided to stop. However, being an artist myself, I understand how difficult this stuff can be. Artist blocks, life events, no time, it happens. Be thankful the comic makers here are still going strong with something instead of just quitting their comic. You’ll get your main story again, just be patient and enjoy the beautiful artwork regardless of whether it’s the main comic or not.

          • phoenix_fire

            are you referring to teahouse?

          • I don’t need her answer to know she is. Teahouse, so missed <3

        • Klaus

These people do not exist just to entertain us. They need to make a living. if charging for nudes is what brings the money in, then that is what they must do,

I too would have prefered the main story to continue. I understand the need to build up a buffer, but this is the team behind the main story, using time they could have chosen to use on the main story. I really would have liked them to do so. But this story is interesting too.

        • I can understand your frustration. I’m sure we all look forward to the main story to continue, but I personally also enjoynthjis story – and this one is a planned part of the posting, just like the interlude comic between chapter 1 & 2 also was. This one was already meant to happen, wheree the ToD hiatus story wasn’t. Previous story or not, we wouldn’t be longer now than we are anyway, since we would have had a hiatus instead.

Would I want the story to continue, sure, as I said, but I was also one who scolded Alex last year. Why? Because he, and the team, never took time off. Holidays, family emergencies, sickness and what else that often would have someone skip an update – it didn’t happen. Only time there wasn’t an actual update (when Adam’s father passed away) we still got an art update (which was why I gave Alex a ‘take some time off’ rant).

Not once in 3-4 years have Alex taken a break. So while I wait eagerly for more main story, I want this one too, and I’m happy the artists got a breather while we got an extra story with ToD. Much better than a 3 months hiatus.

You can feel as you want, and read the story as you like, but personally I don’t think anyone has a right to complain about what is posted and when, since this (no matter what posted) has been one of the most consistent updating comics online since it started.

As for the nude men posts, they’re a party of the kickstarter material that needed done anyway. A kickstarter that went beyond anything Alex expected, and therefor came with much more work than expected – all next to making 2 pages a week.
Thank god that Alex went to make a Patreon page, otherwise TYP would have ended. Alex was only a couple months away from running out of funding to keep it running when he did that, so I’m happy in more ways than one about the naked men art 😉

    • Michael

      side stories…

As compared to weeks or months of hiatus while the professional-quality art is being drawn and coloured for free?

    • timemonkey

Honestly, I’m enjoying these side stories more than watching two assholes beat up a bunch of teenagers and be smug about it.

  • Jason Moon

Oh God, NOW she went and inured Ivan’s widdle male ego. What even STUPIDER thing could he do? Hmmm…

  • TwoWayStar

Maybe you should just shoot him now! Because the mob and you, dont care about all these extras, kill him for trying to rob you guys and youre settled.

actually did she call in for reinforcements?? because MAN that would be bad!

  • AseretZone

Eep, scary lady with a gun! Hopefully Mitch doesn’t get hurt. Oh, and the brothers, of course.

  • MoonByte

…………………I start to feel reminded of that ridiculous scene in Drawn Together where everyone started to pointing guns at everyone (including themselfs)…

  • Toli Bera

    She’s had a big day.

  • Ninhursag

“They’re not what I’m paid to protect”? I hope she bluffing, but it doesn’t seem so. I don’t like her anymore…

    • timemonkey

For taking the attention away from the three unarmed guys and forcing the dude with the gun to focus entirely on her?

      • Ninhursag

I said that I won’t like her anymore if she really is planning to not protect the kids. If she’s just bluffing that’d be ideal.

  • Kanya badger don’t give a f**k

    • Good seeing you comment again War sweetie! *hugs*

  • Airboy Obsessed

She probably had an ankle holster.

  • Johndar

And it just get’s worse and worse…

  • As long as Kanya doesn’t harm Mitch I am good. Though she shouldn’t injure Ivan too badly because then I wouldn’t get to play with him in my “special” room.

  • Hi Everybody. It’s Taco Tuesday in Casa AJ

    • Sounds yummy

      • davefragments

        oooh, tacos.

        • Sometimes one just needs to eat tacos.

          • davefragments

I need a drink. Probably just green tea.

          • I’m having a Mexican Coke, which for me is like having a cocktail. 🙂

      • It should be!! It’s simmering in the sauce now.

  • davefragments

It rained today. First good solid rain in two weeks. My lawn loved it.
And most of us are related to Genghis Kahn. So — Hi cousins!
