The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Coda—Page 7

120 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Coda—Page 7

No, no, a thousand times: no!

So, looks like DunKid doesn’t have any answers about The Platinum Priestess or the walls between Hell and Earth. What will Kyle ask next? And will our firebending hero have any better luck getting the information they so desperately need from once-a-Duncan?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Nope, nope, nope.

  • Hmmm. Still don’t believe you kid.

    • stickfigurefairytales

But just look at his big ears!

      • Saxon_Brenton

I don’t think the usual phrase is ‘The ears are a window to the soul’ 🙂

        • Wayne Lunkwitz

No…..ears would be the windows to major impacted wax issues……the eyes……the eyes are the windows to the soul.

      • *covers eyes* can’t make me look.

    • Adam Black

      Time for Swirlies.

      • Toli Bera

don’t you mean wet willies? swirlies are dunking the head in the toilet and flushing

  • stickfigurefairytales

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?!

    • African or European?

    • Klaus

      African or European?
      (Somebody had to do it.)

  • syllibub

Yes…scary…I wonder if Duncan was actually afraid of her before (wise), or if he’s trying to exaggerate now to make himself seem more innocent.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Howsabout: Adult Duncan found her a bit scary but the persona he’d created as a dangerous adult supervillain meant that he merely recognised her as ‘someone else who was scary’, which is a belief/delusion that young Duncan no longer has the option of taking refuge in.

      • syllibub

Seems right to me! They may have teamed up, but it’s hard to imagine that he wasn’t wary of her at the very least.

        • davefragments

He spent a few pages of the comic trying to get her not to open the portal right then but to talk to Spooky about how to repair the dimensional walls. She rather shut him down in a cruel and nasty way.

        • Klaus

He seemed to actually belive that she considered him an equal. Which I find very unlikely.

    • Mary Klemzak

I doubt it. Maybe at first, but adults are more rational, and life teaches, there’s not much to be scared of, after a time.

  • davefragments

A red rimmed “No!” with an exclamation point!
Now that’s definitive, truthful, revealing, and it’s own teeny-tiny cliffhanger.

  • Klaus

I don’t think it very clever of Kyle to ask like that. He may create false memories that way.

    • Mary Klemzak

      What’s clever? He’s 18. Who’s clever at 18? No many.

      • Klaus

Right. So ExSec ought to have instructed him on the proper way to ask.

        • Mary Klemzak

          Possibly.

        • Adam Black

          Rose Petals?

          • Klaus

I doubt Kyle is ready to face that yet.

          • Adam Black

He just has to seduce him , and the comic is full circle. I don’t expect Kyle to get him off

          • NoiseShaper

I doubt that ExSec would go with that; Suspect or not and magic or not – Dunkid is a minor as far as anybody knows!

          • timemonkey

Kyle’s only two years older than him.

          • NoiseShaper

Yeah, but for ExSec it would still be supremely icky to push Kyle towards him as sexual bait for interrogation purposes.

          • timemonkey

Obviously. I never said it wouldn’t be.

        • timemonkey

ExSec already questioned him themselves, this is just to see if Kyle can get anything they can’t. He’s not really going to get anything new if he behaves the same as they did. Got to catch the kid off guard.

    • NoiseShaper

The matter is pressing and sometimes you just need to cast a net to catch some fish.

And with his added mean witch” statement it sounded like he was already halfway there anyway.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Dunkid’s description of Sircea reminds me a little of the bit in the song “Short Skirt, Long Jacket” – I doubt her fingernails shine like justice, but her eyes could definitely burn like cigarettes.

    • Adam Black

      Duran, Duran. Man-eater

    • Nate

      “Killer Queen” 😉

  • davefragments

I wonder if Sircea gave Old Duncan some magic spell that would blot out his mind for a week or so and then wear off? Just in case things go bad. I don’t think that such a plan in case things go bad would have included Dunkid’s age regression.

    • Klaus

Is this less than a week after the fight?

      • davefragments

It can’t be too long but perhaps the forgetting spell is on a trigger so only Sircea can unleash his memories. I wouldn’t put that past her.

        • Mary Klemzak

So what you’re saying is.. To bring back Dunkids memories,we gotta see the scary ancient witch lady again? Greeeat…

          • davefragments

            It’s a possibility.

    • Adam Black

You mean ‘Duncold’ ? DaddyCan ?

      • davefragments

        the silver haired stud

        • Adam Black

          I think you misspelled slut

          • davefragments

            {me: pout, pout}

        • Klaus

Interesting how words change meaning over time. In Danish a stud is a castrated bull. But obviously these owrds must once have meant the same.

          • davefragments

We call a castrated bull a “Steer.”
Horses and certain select bulls are kept intact for Stud Service.

          • Ansel

Stud means pretty much the opposite in the US and Canada (and I assume the UK?), it generally means a breeding male, and one pays a ‘stud fee’ for a male animal owned by someone else to breed to their own female (eg in dog or horse breeding).

(and as you’ve gathered, it’s used colloquially for someone male and sexy)

          • Raymond Saint-Pierre

            Unless you’re referring to construction where a stud is usually a 2″ x 4″ x 8′ of wood?
There I go with morning woodies again.

          • Klaus

Yes, I know. It comes from a word meaning to strike, or to turn into a stump. A stud was originally a bull with only stumps of horns.

    • NoiseShaper

I don’t think that could be voluntary; Memory loss makes you vulnerable and defenseless, and why would any self-respecting supervillain see any attractive tactical advantage in that?

      • davefragments

He wouldn’t see any advantage in that but Sircea lies and hides truth… She is quite capable of double-crossing the older Duncan.
Remember, the old Duncan had that weak spot of aging and feeling it. He didn’t want to grow old gracefully. He didn’t want to grow old at all. None of us want to grow old and less capable with every year.

        • D. G.

There is also the possibility said spell was cast on him without his awareness.

          • davefragments

That’s always a possibility with Sircea being involved.

          • NoiseShaper

That would be the only way I’d see that, but not Duncan voluntarily choosing amnesia to somehow evade the consequences of a failed mission.

  • davefragments

I also don’t think Sircea is young once again. If Sircea come back to find Duncan, then the confrontation between the two of them would be a real dramatic festival of recrimination, especially for an old Sircea who wants an earthly godhead and worshippers.
Why would she still be old? I think that she had to be at the gate and she wasn’t at the gate when Laampros came through. I always expected a double-cross out of Laampros, after all, he wouldn’t be demon lord of the hell dimension without a double-cross.
I can envision a meeting between Dunkid and Sircea where he looks at her, gasps in yucky horror as if she’s something you don’t want to step in and say “but you’re old”… Part of me would cheer that scene — a cruel, heartless part of me

    • Mary Klemzak

Sircea:Old.. Kid, you have no idea!

      • davefragments

wrinkly, wrinkly, saggy, saggy, floppy, floppy…

        {hint: blush, blush}

        • Mary Klemzak

          Dunkid:*gags*

    • Adam Black

I think got Young, powerless and became MisaMisa

      • davefragments

        Misa Amane
        ooooh-la-la
She had a really bad end.

        • Adam Black

          It fits like a puzzle.
Naivety , Youth, popstar and ….power/ Kira worship.

    • Grace

ooh, what if they were de-aged to the point of no longer being a threat…Sircea might be a toddler!!! which would be hilarious if they did retain their memories

      • davefragments

        That’s an idea.
Sircea could star in her own “Omen” movie or “The Bad Seed” story.

  • Mary Klemzak

Well, all you can do now is give it time. Maybe Dunkid will remember something in the meantime? Or, maybe he needs a change of scenery. Bunk with the YP. Maybe Amanda can read him if he just let’s his guard down some?

I’m just spitballing here. He obviously doesn’t belong in a cell, if he can’t honestly remember anything. Maybe I’m being too kind, and the boy is playing? Who knows? Only the creators, and they’re not saying much.. Sooooo we the readers have to speculate and brainstorm.

PS:I’d still love to see more fanfic! I’m surprised there isn’t more than just 3 on AO3. Cosplay, too!

  • Reversed jazz hands. Duncan is not happy-excited about this topic.

    • Mary Klemzak

Poor guy. I want the give him hugs and milk and cookies.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Hmmm…..not sure what to think of this almost seems repetitive but then as Dunkid insists……he doesn’t remember anything except what she looked like. Wait and see time I guess.

  • davefragments

More thoughts of a speculative nature:
I think Sircea’s plan all long was to renew her powers or increase them by sucking power from the Demons that Laampros brought through the portal and when powerful enough, blast Laampros back through the gate. Then she would be the most powerful magician and human on the planet and she would begin her reign as goddess of the world. I wonder if she would want human sacrifice or mere have eunuchs and virgins as priests to her godhead.

  • Pietro7

Interesting tidbit – their poses in the last two panels are basically mirror images. Hmmm

  • Curt Clark

Kyle, what part of “amnesia” do you not get?

    • Klaus

      The “mne” part.

      • Adam Black

        He gets Asia?

        • Klaus

          Asia is hard to miss.

          • Adam Black

Hard to miss, but harder to carry

          • Grace

I dunno maybe Flyboy could give it a shot, his new beau could lift it in the air for him.

          • Will Parkinson

Especially in the ‘Heat of the Moment’.

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

“Heat of the moment”? REALLY?? Considering Kyle already was “this close” to “toasting the kid” like a piece of stale dry bread??? *GROAN*

          • Will Parkinson

Sorry. My comment was about ‘Asia’ being hard to miss. Musical group from the 80s with ‘Heat of the Moment’ being one of their biggest hits. Seemed funny in my head, considering Kyle and fire. I meant no disrespect.

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

No , I’m sorry…..my “dry” humor sometimes misses the mark with people.

  • davefragments

Tonight I’m having more and more thoughts about Duncan and his deal with Laampros.
I can think of several reasons why Laampros would double-cross Duncan. Mostly because he’s Demon Lord and he only doles out “eternal youth” or something like it to those he can dominate and/or remain forever grateful to him. It makes no sense to give your future rival “eternal life” and guarantee you spend the rest of days looking over your shoulder.
And there is that thing that one of my bosses said when I told him that I wanted a promotion — He only had one promotion and I had worked for him for 18 months and there were people waiting 4 or 5 years for that promotion. Now that is an interesting reason. Laampros has lieutenants like George the Giant Eyeball and some of those ofter plug ugly beasts with the teeth and scales and oozing tentacles who might be offended that he gave Duncan, a mere earthling, internal youth.

    • means are the ends

Off to a side topic, with an unasked -for reaction!
If there’s no promotions for anyone in 5 years, and the place is that stingy, using the excuse that ‘other people have it worse’ to keep people in line, maybe look for a more generous company? It’s everyone’s personal choice, but sounds like they are using the typical wedge of divide and conquer–or in this case, keep all the $$$ for the top.

      • davefragments

Not really. It was a government agency. The government is stingy. “Promotion” (some action that results in a pay increase or status change) means different things in that context. Everyone got yearly increases and step changes (there are 10 steps in every grade). Promotion refers to a change in grade level. When I retired two years later, someone took my upgraded position as a promotion.

  • bronakopdin

“DunKid” still makes me giggle so much even though the situation isn’t laughworthy right now x’D
But as it seems now Duncan might really “just” have some form of Amnesia with the chance to get some his memory back over time. If it was a complete loss of all his memories happening after the age he is now then he shouldn’t even know how PP looks like, right?
The question is how long it might take though to get them back, if they come back completely at all…
Somehow one would think it could be better for Duncan not to remember x’D but it would be better for Kyle… in a way that he could confront him again about what happened >___>’

  • Songbird

Hey so Alex, could you just use your evil creative writing powers to conjur up the full comic like…. Now? Kthxbye.

But really this suspense is not good for my skin okay? Think of my pores!

  • A red-rimmed “no”… That inclines me towards thinking Duncan’s telling the truth. For Duncan the scheme was always about repairing the walls/minimising the damage, even if he got personal benefits as well. If that was adult Duncan’s mind in a teenage body, he’d be worried that the walls might be breached again.

    • Raymond Saint-Pierre

Rimmed? As in…..? Talk about fringe activities!

  • Raymond Saint-Pierre

Kyle, “firebending” in this context? Thank you! It’s going to be a hot time in the interview room!

  • Tristan Black Wolf

Kyle, chill a moment. I put in a call to Hotch at the BAU; he says you need to try some other means of interrogation. Treat him like the victim until he proves otherwise. He’s fighting himself; don’t you fight him too. And Reed’s giving me stats on child abuse, and Penelope’s using psychic software to hack into tracking where the witch went, so hang on, we’ll get there…

  • Nate

Man, Adam is really knocking the art out of the park with these pages. The subtle facial expressions are PERFECT.

(Is DunKid his official nickname now? 😉 )

    • Klaus

It seems to have changed to once-a-Duncan.

    • DunKid or YoungCan. Mostly used is probably DunKid.

  • Klaus

Have you seen the picture with the Platinum Priestess as the dragon-fighting heroine on the white horse? I just saw it as an ad on Questinable Content.

  • Zephyr10101

    Sandy voice: then think AGAIN

  • Jason Moon

Man, if this is an ACT… 🙂

  • Chris Dangerfield

Golly, but this whole section is so much more than ‘just’ a CODA. It’s exciting and mysterious and very suspenseful. I very much agree with @natementor:disqus below,

“Man, Adam is really knocking the art out of the park with these pages. The subtle facial expressions are PERFECT.” I just have to also congratulate Vero for the subtlety of color. This is not a dungeon or a torture chamber, but a very serious containment center. I feel the chill, but it doesn’t seem evil.

I honestly don’t know what to think about young-Duncan yet. I have to say that if he IS faking, it just make me sad about his character YET again… as he’s broken my heart so many times.

Also, I hope this provides some help to Kyle. Normally I would not select the boy who was emotionally ‘raped’ (my wording, please select your own) barely 24+ hours ago as an uninvolved interrogator. There is just no way he cannot be still deeply hurting on many levels by Duncan’s betrayal.

Thanks you yet again Alex, Adam and Vero. This whole section is superb and adds so much to the ending of this book. Bravo(a).

    • Klaus

This is several days after the fight, probably at least a week, and quite possibly more. There must have been many questions for every member of the team, and Spooky, at least, is done answering them. They are almost certainly all done. ExSec has also had time to give up on questioning Duncan, for now.

      • Chris Dangerfield

That makes sense. Thanks. However PTSD can take years to recover from. A day a week, a month… I still stand by my thought that his trauma with Duncan pointedly means Kyle is never going to be the best man for this job.

Of course they wouldn’t want to be telling Exsec that Kyle was the key to hell. That would open up a can of worms.

“The angry boy…” indeed… deservedly. Just my thoughts.

I think the team deserves very cool action figures for this world save! Whooo Hoooo!

        • Klaus

I wonder if he has asked to do this, or ExSec has ordered him to do it. “You’ve been cleared to go down there” may indicate the former, though not necessarily.

But if this indeed a job, Kyle may be the best man for it, not for any qualities of his own, but for Duncan’s reaction to him.

          • Chris Dangerfield

As usual, Klaus, you make good sense. And I don’t question Kyle’s testicular fortitude. He did kick his Papa’s scaly heinie through that dimensional hell-door, after all. So, you’re right, he may feel this is something he needs to do and can do.

Still, apart from his own emo-need to attempt for some sort of closure, I don’t see how he could handle a conversation (interrogation?) in this context in any way that isn’t warped by what he went through. Or, at least I’m projecting myself on to him (HA. As usual). I couldn’t have this conversation without bringing my baggage with me.

          • Adam Black

maybe hes not physically there, and its a preview of a mental projection by our um Captain Mindwarp
            ( Lady Charlieboy? )

  • D. G.

I think kyle should try no more than two more questions related to the battle / mission. After that, I think he should chit chat with the kid. I think this would be a kind of emotional therapy and a bit of closure regarding such recent sexual betrayal.

  • Sapfo

“Do you want to see the next page?”
    “No!”
    “DUUUNKIIID!”

  • Baylien Brown

You, Sir, are having way too much fun with the Duncan puns.

  • Szymon Brycki

Hi folks! I would like to describe to you my today’s dream:

Me and Magnetto wanted to collect an army of soldiers published in parts in magazines (you know, there are magazines in which there are parts of models, only in this case there were real soldiers with superpowers). Suddenly Kyle and Commander appeared and using their water powers (???) beated up Magnetto. Then they jumped into an ocean. Commander was diving really deep, while the rest of the Young Protectors swam to the surface. On their path they have come into the underwater museum, where they discovered that the deeper you are, the slower your brain works.

At the same time, Commander was diving and diving, deeper and deeper, in order to wake up some underwater, powerful monstrosity.

    And… that’s where I woke up, so I dunno how it ended : <

    • Klaus

You wouldn’t happen to be an underwater, powerful monstrosity, would you?

  • Klaus

      Thx doki.

  • Pietro7

Good evening campers. Looking forward to some more answers tonight. 🙂

    • Saxon_Brenton

Like whether Duncan is using the red lined word balloons because he doesn’t know anything and just wants people to stop pestering him, or whether its because the dimensional walls between hell and earth is a hot button topic.

  • davefragments

    Hello Campers

      Hi!

        Hi Stick,
        How’s it going?

        • stickfigurefairytales

Pretty well, although I’m very tired. Was going to go straight to bed but I decided to pop by at least briefly. How are you?

Whatever he once was, this Duncan is a new person; a kid, and it makes me really sad to see that he’s been chucked into a fishbowl for gods know how long. Does he even still have his powers? Are they going to keep him in this hole indefinitely? The whole thing just makes me really uncomfortable.
