Sweet ride, Spooks!

Y’all continue to be totally awesome over at the Patreon page. In just a few short days, we’re now at close to $6200/month, a level of support we haven’t been at since last October and that much closer to breaking even. I never expected this kind of response. You’re incredible. All the June rewards are still available for new Patrons, and I’m very grateful to you all. Thank you!

So! Is this the final word on Kyle/Spooky? Of course not! But we’re not just going to hand wave it—it deserves its own arc, don’t you think?

And, as it turns out, that arc will immediately follow this Coda!

For now, though, Kyle has other concerns. What are Commander and Tsunami going to tell the boys when they come over? And what will this mean for our young heroes?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Fingers crossed!

  • Now THAT is a cool ride. I want one.

Apparently Spooky got to keep a pet or two, or they just haven’t commanded him to ‘discharge’ the yet… if he would listen.

    • davefragments

It looks like a cross between a dinosaur, a vulture, and a hawk.

      • Samurai Jack

        A Skeksis, surely?

        • davefragments

it’s been years since I seen a Skeksis

          • ComicBookGoddess

I wish that I had been so lucky…

          • EyeDontNo

They appear to be making a second movie. I have no clue whether it would be sequel, prequel, or stand-alone. But the teaser pics show the Skeksis.

          • davefragments

Thanks, I’ll look for that. The Never-ending Story is a very impressive movie.

        • Another word I had to look up, but this one a fictional species. Quite fitting though 🙂

      • Klaus

Just like the giraffe is a cross between a leopard and a camel. Yes, that was actually the accepted truth among scientists for quite a long time.

    • Saxon_Brenton

The sign that I’ve been writing too much hellsnake fanfic: My immediate response to seeing that pic of Spooky is to get a mental image of the snakes giving Spooky the side-eye and muttering angrily under their breath.

On a more serious note: Spooky even has a bridle for it.

      • *lol*

Hell snake: do he like that beast more than me? *mutters* I bet he does… *grumble*

    • Madock345

I’m guessing the reason Spooky has so much latitude is that nobody wants to try giving him orders. As the only spellcaster on the “good” side, if he decided he didn’t feel like listening, I don’t know if there’s anybody who could force him too. That’s a situation everyone wants to avoid creating. At least if they’re letting him do whatever he wants, it’s still them letting him, and the illusion of control is maintained.

      • Yes, and it probably helps that he’s gone over half a dozen years without going cuckoo, all while helping save people and hunting demons.

Sheesh, so he keep a demon creature here and there. Still only animals.

        • D. G.

They don’t strike me as just animals or creatures. Intelligence level is too high. And they are enchanted.

          • I agree. It was a possible govermental ‘approach’ to it I tried to express.

          • D. G.

            Oh. OK. That makes sense.

  • Nate

We may get that Laser Bear and the Fire Snakes story yet. 🙂

  • And he shall be called: Rex!

    • Rex. I’m in for that 🙂

(.. unless we ever get a name for it)

      • Well of course! And…Yay!!

        • Nate

Can I suggest Rex-Wing? Spooky strikes me as a Star Wars fan. 😀

  • Zephyr10101

Ship sank. Man down man down

    • Nope.. up! Rise up 😉

(Maybe we’ll get some of that when ‘Spooky returns’, since we’ll get a Spooky/Kyle shoiry story after this)

      • ComicBookGoddess

(How do they rise up, rise up, rise up… how do they rise up, rise up high?)

    • NoiseShaper

You’re clearly in need of a pair of sea legs, young sailor! ☠️

  • There are people here lighting off fireworks. It’s not the 4th here yet people. Grrr!

    • davefragments

When I drove downtown yesterday, I wondered what all the “tent” pop-up sales booths were… That’s how they sell fireworks in Pennsylvania. Last time I bought fireworks, I didn’t use them because that year we had a drought so bad, the lawn would have caught fire.

      • They only sell little variety packs in the grocery stores where I am now. When I lived about an hour away, which is in another county, every group seeking to raise money opened a booth in town. One year as we watched from our back porch–we were on a hill and could over see the valley–we counted at least 8 house fires. People think, oh the desert! Doesn’t mean their dumb ass won’t burn down their house or their neighbors. Of course if you lived where we did on the various hills which was on the other side of the aqua duct, you couldn’t light off fireworks cause well, the hills might catch fire and it was hard for the fire department to get good access.

I do wish they would wait. The older I get, the less fond I am of loud explosions.

        • davefragments

They do that around here too — light houses on fire.
          Just not quite so spectacularly

For some reason, men turn into little boys with things that go boom.

          • Sigh.

          • davefragments

My work changing coal to oil involved high pressure hydrogen. I have an entirely different outlook on things that go boom.

          • I bet. Boom was bad in that instance.

          • davefragments

            Even the little ones.
We put things behind at least 3/8ths inch thick armor plate steel and the big high bays had 18in and 12in walls of reinforced concrete.
hydrogen go boom, real big boom

          • With craters left behind.

          • davefragments

            at the worst case, yes

          • I would think any boom in your line of work was always worst case scenario.

          • davefragments

No. I was near two that were behind the armor plate.
And one of the big plants ruptured a bend in a piece of tubing that sprayed burning oil 40 feet into the air.
HOWEVER, we controlled the amount of hydrogen that could be released and then ventilated with large fans to prevent the “worst case” explosion. It takes lots of safety rules and practices that are never neglected to control the problem and not create a “worst case”

          • ComicBookGoddess

Heh. That’s Hazmat Tech level. I only studied to Ops so far. 🙂

          • davefragments

            Way different than Hazmat …
The practices required for safe handling of hazardous materials is altogether different than the handling and use of hydrogen. I bought chemicals the became hazardous wastes and I bought hydrogen in trailers for use in the pilot plants. It’s two completely different sets of practices.

          • ComicBookGoddess

Believe it or not, actually studied some engineering, too, so I know. Makes Hazmat WAY easier if you know some chemistry, too. But we’re talking about a different concept, here. Your definition seems to consider that hydrogen by itself won’t leave environmental contamination, correct?

DOT has different considerations. For emergency response purposes, Hydrogen IS a Hazmat. If it’s not handled correctly, especially in an uncontrolled situation, it can hurt or kill people. It’s covered under 29 CFR 1910.103. 🙂

          • The good things about hydrogen are that
            a) people tend to have a lot of respect
            b) it’s really quick to evaporate
            c) the danger is mostly physical

Things that tend to give me a headache to teach people is stuff like few ppm Carbon monoxide around women or Mercury vapours in general – everything that seems harmless on immediate contact imakes it difficult to keep people alerted

          • davefragments

The “other” building researched the Fischer-Tropsch process with synthesis gas (CO and H2). CO has its own unique dangers that I won’t go near.

          • Keneu

Why few ppm of carbon monoxide around women? It affects them much more?

          • davefragments

I hate to do this, but I have a Bachelor’s in Chem Eng and 30 years working to run coal to oil to gasoline and the management of research. In conceiving, designing and building high pressure hydrogenation and liquefaction plants with a second stage of heterogeneous catalysis to make gasolines and light oils. And sorry, you are arguing a tiny technical point of Hazmat and not the Safety practices that are required. (That’s it. I’m retired and this is work.)

          • ComicBookGoddess

As you are, Dave, I’m arguing a major point of MY vocation. I am using the correct terminology and classifications for a different set of vocations. There are very good reasons for these to be defined this way for transportation and emergency response. You are prioritizing your experience by trivializing the thought and needs of that system, which has different objectives.

It is not a tiny point, in my job, which substances can cause things to burn or explode. Hydrogen is certainly one of those substances, if mishandled.

I am not retired, and I certainly will need to remember that molecular hydrogen gas is a class 2 hazardous material, or else I may fail when I have to update my certification.

        • We have a LOT of firework stores around here, well a couple of permanent stores and a bunch of traveling tents that pop up for certain holidays.

    • Samurai Jack

No, but it’s July 1st and Canada has a heck of a party planned for today. Maybe you’re getting some spillover from temporarily displaced Canucks? 😉 Anyway, Happy Canada Day, and congrats on your 150th!

      • Nah. I live in California. People just want to make things go boom. They’ve been doing it for the last week or so.

        But indeed Happy Canada Day!

        • Bei Dawei

Long live Sir Isaac Brock and Tim Horton!

        • Samurai Jack

I’m currently homeless and wandering the Earth. (A long story that involves science, politics and Trump…) Anyway, my travels have brought me to Ottawa and later today I’ll be on Parliament Hill with probably half a million Canadians celebrating their milestone. Even though it’s supposed to rain it will still be a Happy Canada Day for me. 🙂

    • Bei Dawei

      No, it’s Canada Day!

      • But…but I’m in Southern California!

        • Bei Dawei

Or is it Really Southern British Columbia?

          • davefragments

            northern mexico

            {wink, wink}

          • Bei Dawei

            Former Russian America.

          • davefragments

            Alaska

          • Ha! There have been those wanting Canada to adopt the west coast states.

        • Madock345

          Canadians have *really* loud fireworks.

    • obviously, they celebrate equal marriage in Germany! I’d light a few fireworks myself if i had any leftovers from new years eve

      • A good reason to celebrate too!!

        • You can say that – and a miracle the way it happened: for several years, the CDU (Christian Democratic Union Party) blocked any attempt, forcing their coalition partners to vote against it. But this Monday, in the last week before summer break in parliament and with elections in September, Chancellor Merkel said in a panel discussion with a usually totally un-political women’s magazine, she now sees the matter more as a question of personal conscience – maybe not realizing that she lifted the party and coalition discipline that way. And since a completely finished draft of a law was on hold in Parliament, the social democrats (SPD) forced it onto the schedule of the last day of legislation – and so it wasn’t only accepted by the SPD and the two left-ish opposition parties, but also by 75 members of the CDU, including the Minister of Defense, the chief of Chancellor’s staff and the party’s secretary general.

          • That’s awesome!!

          • yeah, but we’re still not sure if it was a slip of Merkel or election tactics, as all possible future coalition partners insisted in their election programmes on equal marriage for the next coalition.

Anyway, it’s the result that counts, and I’m especially happy for Volker Beck, who fought in Parliament for equality since 1994 and who will not return in the new parliament after the elections – what a brilliant final day of work!

    • ComicBookGoddess

I expect fireworks of varying expense for the next four days.

  • And Mitch yet again proves he is a smart cookie and a very good observer. Maybe it’s easier to see things when you’re new and/or a little overlooked in the group.

‘Kind of lonely’ is exactly like what I would say about Spooky as well. There’s a whole other very intense and kind of reserved/isolated side to Spooky that he doesn’t show much when he’s around the team.
No wonder, based on his background, with what he has been through. For the team he’s a big brother, a friend, a co-worker and other ‘titles’, and vice versa, but for Spooky the team also has another very important function that they may not be fully aware of (maybe Spooky isn’t in the front of his mind either): they are his happy core. The place of ‘safety’.

    • ComicBookGoddess

Certainly he seems to feel a bond with Kyle. We’ll see if it is stronger than his was with Amanda. And given what we’ve seen and heard flashes of… perhaps he has his reasons to have kept so casual.

I suspect he may have more in common with Kyle…

    • Keneu

      Agreed.

Flyboy being kind of an outsider / new and still adapting to the team makes it even more surprising that Tsunami feels so protective of him, though.

      • I think Tsu is very protective of younger ‘kids’ in general, and Mitch is a new member that he is guardian over, recently turned 15 and clearly youngest by almost two years (Fluke second youngest). I’m not surprised at all.

    • I always said that with his eyes and ears, he probably knows more than people give him credit for…

  • Mary Klemzak

Long distance relationships suck. Specially when your SO is on an Official Mission™ to find an evil millenniums-old evil priestess.

    • Nate

      And a giant, photonic-ocular ursine.

      • bronakopdin

I love that you wrote ursine x3

        • Nate

          I’m a bit of a nerd. 😉

  • Jeldenil

    Ixnay?

    • davefragments

      pig latin

    • I just looked it up. ‘Used in rejecting something specified’.

So, abort topic/convo, Amanda and Tsu are coming over.
I learn new words while reading this comic. Recently it was ‘plucky’. Awesome word 🙂

      • Bei Dawei

        From German nicht / nichts.

        • German colloquial in the pig-latin shredder? I can’t imagine too many native English speakers get that – me as native German surely didn’t…

          • davefragments

Wikipedia has an article devoted to PIG LATIN
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_Latin

          • ComicBookGoddess

It’s common kiddie slang… what’s the term for that… “Child Directed Speech” or “Motherese”, I think. Like ikujigo.

        • ComicBookGoddess

From the English “nix”, which is probably from the German. 🙂

  • TwilightDreamer

oooh, that first panel looks epic! 😀 but awww…Kyle, please don’t pull the sad puppy face 🙁
So far, loving this quieter, after battle scene 🙂

  • Jeldenil

Also. I’m fascinated by the not-an-eagle Spooks is riding. Is he the demonic version of Newt Scamander, collecting all kind of demonic beasts in bottles? And just as fascinating; can they really risk sending him to face Sircea by himself?

    • Bei Dawei

Yeah–is he a Tarnsman, or is that a Harry-Potterian Hippogriff?

    • ComicBookGoddess

… I think it is more a matter of… he’s safer going after her by himself.

    • Madock345

Anybody who has played D&D would tell you- when the wizards fight, stay out of the way.

In the original battle, I imagine both Spooks and PP were constrained by having things they didn’t really want to damage in the area. Without that limitation on Circea’s end, things would go south quickly.

There is also the possibility that Spooky thinks she’s ended up like Duncan, in which case this is more of a rescue mission.

      • Jeldenil

I’ve played D&D (and other RPGs) and that has taught me never to underestimate a high-level sorceress like Circea… And Spooks, with all due respect, doesn’t have her amount of XP.

        • timemonkey

He could. Immortals tend to get lazy and stop level grinding once they’ve got a hold on the land.

  • So – next kickstarter Bonus goal is a 20″ 3d-print, hand colorated, of Spooky on his gryphon?

    • Would be so cool, but of ever happening it would be wayh out of my pricerange for pledges. But idea is cool if Alex ever wants to make something like this.

    • Klaus

      Exquisitely handcolored by yourself.

  • Sapfo

Honestly Kyle! Your suit? The flames on the but? Are you trying to say something XD

    • Klaus

We have this figure of speech in Danish, if you are full of energy we say that you “have fire in the arse”. Just make sure that it is not a case of “the outhouse is burning”, which means that you are in deep trouble.

      • strangeangel24601

In English, if you say either of those things then people are just gonna assume that you’re talking about eating at Taco Bell.

  • bandanajack

i need to know the tailor who whips up these classy body suits and tights and boots… and the spares

    • ComicBookGoddess

I bet you designers fight for the privilege.

      • bandanajack

i certainly wasn’t thinking i might want one to wear. i just thought measuring for one could be fun.

    • John

Edna Mode. Clearly. There are no capes and the materials are very sturdy.

I bet Kyle’s is a spin-off of the one she designed for Jack-jack given how fire-resistant it is.

      • Pietro7

Good catch, John. I can see that.

  • Do you suppose that getting all that extra demon power kick from dear old dad, made Kyle a little more cut and defined?

    • ComicBookGoddess

Oh, no. He has been that hawt all along…

    • Pietro7

I thought so. Panel 3 is awesome.

  • Klaus

The 18+ card set does not have cards for Fluke or Flyboy. To fill out the set, there are two cards about pairings. Alex asked us which we wanted, and the answer was Kyle/Spooky and Tsunami/Spooky. One of the items on those cards is what it would take for the two to have sex. Tsunami/Spooky: if both were convinced that it would end cancer and hunger worldwide. Kyle/Spooky: if Spooky was convinced it would do Kyle good.

    • Concerto

So he don’t have any feelings for him other than friendship ? I hope it’s not the case 🙁 .

    • ComicBookGoddess

Wow. From Kyle on this page, I’m not entirely certain it would. Of course, the reverse is also true.

And it does indicate that Spooky has real feelings for Kyle. But that was implied anyway.

    • Madock345

I love that it would take cancer *and* world hunger. Just curing cancer ain’t gonna cut it. XD

    • Maybe a world crisi and almost dying topped that reason. Until we may get to otherwise in the short story comic there’s hope 🙂

      • ComicBookGoddess

Oh, I’m certain that Spooky might think it would be just what Kyle needs to move on. He might not, though. And it certainly seems like Kyle has second thoughts about it.

That’s not even touching an issue that is probably just as relevant. Spooky wants to heal the world, in both a literal and figurative sense. So, if he is with Kyle because he thinks It would do Kyle good, is that really good for Spooky? Kinda comes down to if he has return of Kyle’s emotions, doesn’t it? If Spooky’s heart is in the wrong place, it is a signal of instability, and that will be ultimately bad for Kyle.

There’s another angle, too. It seems that Spooky has a lack of constancy in his relationships that has a root visible to this audience. The abuse while in hell… well, I thought Spooky stopped just short of even thinking about Anaado, but it seems as if that love has been soured – possibly with what was happening to him and Amanda in the short story, but also with the direct supporting evidence that he tells Kyle that they had messed with his mind and made him believe that he liked it.

It could be that working Kyle through his trauma would help Spooky with his. But while Spooky is possibly the most self-aware and perceptive character (although Amanda is nearly as good, and Mitch may surpass them both)… It is a rare thing for someone to be nearly that perceptive without help, and Spooky actively avoids the subject of Hell. So it is possible that what Spooky needs a real relationship, and just as possible that he can’t see it.

Frankly, I’m betting that Spooky has mostly kept it casual so far because if his emotions get too wrapped up in it… something like what happened in the short story happens. And I am betting that his emotions might be there already, even if he hasn’t realized it yet.

We shall see. The projected possibilities here are fascinating, though, and that’s even with my observations cut so short. 🙂

    • timemonkey

One point to consider: those conditions were just for sex, one would assume the conditions for starting a relationship would be somewhat different.

  • Klaus

    It is not a bear.

    • ComicBookGoddess

At least it was not a bare bear.

      • bronakopdin

I can’t bear this bare bear talk… barely OK with it

        • ComicBookGoddess

Thank you for bearing the burden of baring your soul about how you are only barely okay with the bare bear talk.

          • bronakopdin

            x3
though now it went from I bear to I bore to I’m bored xD

          • D. G.

BBQ wild boar sounds great 4 dinner.

  • bronakopdin

Talk about flashy xD how would you call that kind of creature he’s riding?
Looks like a mix of a hawk (or other big bird) with a dragon’s head an feet! Nice indeed 😀
I wonder if he’ll manage to find PP and Fluffy ^^

So it is a thing that Spooky is not exactly committed? That’s a little sad for our Kyle but then again everyone is free to do what they feel best with and if it’s that way for Spooky and Kyle knows how to handle that and his feelings it will be fine I guess!
Though let’s see how their talk will turn out in the next arc ^^

    • Klaus

Of mythological creatures known to me, it looks most like a wyvern, in that it has only two legs. Though wyvers are usually understood to be reptillian.

      • bronakopdin

yeah exactly, to me wyverns are more like reptiles, but hey, who says it is a creature we could even know yet ^^

    • No matter what we call the kind of creature, the name is now Rex.. as of a quick and short convo below. Rex suits it 🙂

      • Nate

        How about Rex-Wing?

(You can still call it Rex for short, of course)

        • Samurai Jack

Does he fight? Because Spooky flying a Rex-Wing Fighter is all kind of appropriate. What with shooting Womp Rats and using the Force to find the exhaust port…

      • bronakopdin

to me Rex will first and formost always be a German Shepherd because of the (in Austria and Germany) famous TV series xD

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspector_Rex

though I agree Rex is a cool name ^^ as a Latin (and Ancent Greek) teacher in spe I agree with all names that have their origin in these languages x3

        • Klaus

We had a German shepherd called King when I was a small child. Same meaning, just another forreign language.

          • bronakopdin

well yes I know the meaning, just said I study both those languages 😀
though it certainly is a funny coincidence your German Shepherd had basically the same name ^^

        • That series has been sent repeatedly for years on a Danish tv-channel as well 🙂

        • Keneu

Oh, I remember that series! It aired for years on the Galician TV channel, and afterwards on a Spanish one. xDD

    • ComicBookGoddess

It is a thing that he has not yet been seen to be committed to a lover by these three speaking.

I suspect there are Reasons (TM).

      • bronakopdin

the only thing we know from the comic up to now is that he was once dating Amanda but we have not been told how long their relationsip lastet (though also not how old they were at that point exactly… at least I think that is also an important detail when talking about the lenght of relationships x’D)

  • Monika E

    What does Ixnay mean?

    • Mike Mayak

“Nix.” “Can it.” “Nope.” it’s basically Pig Latin.

      • Monika E

        Thanks!

  • strangeangel24601

Spooky hunting the Platinum Priestess and the Laser Bear needs to be its own story arc.

NO. Wait, scratch that. It needs to be its own COMIC.

    • John

Spooky vs The Platinum Princess is totally something which could BE a comic. Up to Alex if it happens though. I think anything more than a short story will distract from the main plot of this comic; Kyle and his journey to being a Hero in every sense.

      • But that will end with this Coda/epilogue. After that a short story (or two?), and then a whole new arc. We’ve still not been told who’s the main focus character. Two biggest guesses are Mitch or Spooky (I’m leaning towards Mitch).
If it becomes Mitch, or someone neither of them, we may still get some Spooky extras along with the new arc 🙂

  • Earl Patterson

Their H.Q. remind me of Netflix show called S.H.I.E.L.D.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

I’ve seen a bit of that show……could have been on SyFy for a short time…..or one of the other networks.

  • Klaus

    Maybe not-a-bear is named Ixnay?

  • Toli Bera

the art looks great, but in the first panel does Kyle have a lazy eye?

  • Sapfo

If you have a maybe boyfriend as cool as Spooky…. Oh sorry, I got distracted by Spooky riding a dinobird. He is so cool! =)

  • Klaus

But the not-a-bear did not give Spooky its number.

  • Klaus

Since this story has both a prologue and an interlude, can we expect an epilogue and a postlude in addition to the coda?

  • David Welbourn

It’ll be interesting to see if the Platinum Priestess has been turned into an amnesiac teenager in the way that the Annihilator was, and if not, why not.

Also interesting that the Kyle/Spooky thing is going to try the maybe-yes, maybe-no path. I wasn’t expecting that, but then again, I don’t really understand Spooky yet either. Regardless, I can’t wait to see who the new character will be to catch either Kyle’s or Spooky’s eye during this “let’s see where this goes” part of their relationship.

Heck, maybe Laser Bear can transform into a buff hairy dude and give Tsunami some competition in the stand-around-shirtless department.

    • D. G.

As far as sex between this pair goes, I’m a bit concerned. Kyle shoots fire when he shoots. Lol.

  • I love Spooky’s ride, seriously can he get one each for the other non flying members of the team?

    • Klaus

      Just like fly rings.

  • From what we can see in ‘distance’, I think Tsu will look really good in that suit. Look forward to see it up close on next page.

    • Keneu

      Same 🙂

  • davefragments

I’m watching the Tour De France (it’s day 1) and they have new technology skin suits that fit tighter and are more aerodynamically slick than previous years.
These new skin suits look like Kyle’s costume — almost painted on. New wind-tunnel tested textiles apparently and the company (I think in Norway, not sure) can make a new suit overnight.
It seems reality is approaching Edna Mode…

    • Klaus

      No capes at the Tour!

    • Pietro7

That would be really cool. I’m reminded of Lois Bujold’s ‘Barrayar’ stories where Miles has to have his clothes custom-made at a tailor shop – takes about an hour after the laser body-scan is complete. No more off-the-rack!

      • davefragments

One team took a VR picture of today’s course with a cellphone things and they used it yesterday and last night with a VR headset for the riders to “see” the course and plan their ride. One of the announcers tried it said that it looks and feels like the real ride on a stationary bike. That lights up the little boy in me like 4th of July.

    • xLizardx

I work in a bicycle shop. I’ve always thought that they’re missing a trick by not making a line of jerseys and bibshorts in superhero prints – I mean, if you’re going to be in skintight lycra, you might as well be dressed as Spiderman or similar, right? 🙂

      • davefragments

        Sounds good to me

      • Stephen Hutchison

Underarmor has the license for most of those.

        • xLizardx

Sadly, we don’t sell them, only Castelli, Rapha, Sportful, Specialized, Endura, etc.

      • davefragments

I found this on Road Cycling UK (RCUK):
“The skinsuits, so the story goes, are designed for riding in the wet and could give an advantage of as much as 20 seconds to the rider over a 14km TT. The race jury did not uphold the complaint, made by FDJ, about the skin suits in the end, proving that ‘being well prepared for the conditions’ is not against the rules of the Tour de France.”

Personally, I would never wear a white skinsuit on a bicycle in the rain.

  • Klaus

While superheroes have been main stream for a while, superhero costumes have not become fashion, and they never will. There are just too few people who look good in tight spandex.

  • Nirgal

Kyle, haven’t you been paying attention?

It was definitely not a bear. Amanda said it.

Please take care of using the correct terminology next time.

  • Pietro7

Kyle’s body has a classic mesomorph somatotype – narrow hips, broad shoulders, flat belly, comparatively heavy musculature and low body fat. Guys with that set of genes don’t have to exercise very hard to keep The Look. (Tsu is an example of a more extreme version.) Those with more endomorphic somatotypes (Spooky) or ectomorphic somatotypes (Flyboy is close, though partly that’s his age) have to work harder to make themselves look mesomorphic. It’s a cultural thing as well as a genetic issue – the fascination with male musculature mostly came about in Western culture after we mostly stopped laboring with our bodies for our livings. Thus men with highly-developed musculature are signalling that they have the leisure time (and discipline) to exercise two or more hours per day in order to stay that way. (Also they have comparative youth – because Nature, that ruthless b*tch, is not much kinder to old men than to old women.)

  • Sascha

I feel old for knowing what “Ixnay” means

    • davefragments

      pig latin

      • Sascha

I know what it is; I’m saying I feel old because no one uses that term anymore -where I’m from anyways. RIP

      • Pietro7

Miss Piggy Latin sounds humorous. Got examples?

        • davefragments

Mostly moans in her dreams about Kermit…
I had muppets rampaging through my mind.

        • Auntie Mumpsimus

Actually, one of her writers, Henry Beard, wrote Latin for All Occasions and a bunch of sequels. They’re hilarious… for an old methane burst like me, anyway.

          • ComicBookGoddess

Oh! I didn’t know he was a Muppet writer. I loved that book.

        • Bei Dawei

I remember her mostly attempting French.

  • syllibub

It sounds like Spooky and Kyle will have plenty to talk about, relationship-wise. If the Protectors remain an active team (which…obviously?), there’s a chance they might decide to keep things platonic for the sake of professionalism. I could be remembering it wrong, but I thought being teammates was part of the reason Spooky and Amanda aren’t together anymore.

If Spooky does find Sircea, I hope she gets away from him, if only because it would be excellent to see her appear as a villain across multiple arcs. She certainly dreams big enough!

    • Klaus

      She can always escape later.

    • timemonkey

Even if he catches her it doesn’t mean she won’t escape again.

    • ComicBookGoddess

Actually, I suspect that the second short story in Patreon spills the most as to why it didn’t work out between Amanda and Spooky. There were numerous extenuating circumstances.

In any case, I actually would be disappointed if professionalism were the last word. If they don’t work out, it would be much more interesting if it were for reasons closer to their hearts.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I do hope things work out for Kyle and Spooky.

  • S+

“Platinum Priestess and the Laser Bears” would be an excellent name for a rock band.

  • D. G.

hey all. its been a while since ive been here. missed yall. i kinda wish anni would have gotten a free pass due to his currently innocent state. placed in a loving but firm household. ah well. overall im pleased with this webcomic. i wouldnt mind kyle and spooky being shipped.

    • NoiseShaper

That still seems like a possible outcome for Duncan.

      • D. G.

        Hope so.

    • davefragments

This CODA has 3 more pages so we may yet find out about The Annihilator’s fate.

      • D. G.

        True. Hey Dave.

      • Only 3? I missed where it say that.

        • davefragments

          oops…
I thought that I read the coda was 6 pages but now I can’t find any number anywhere.
So take that as a “gee, maybe wishful thinking” or “Gee maybe bad eyes late an night!” or “huh?”
          I don’t know.

    • Hey D.G.!

      • D. G.

        Heya doki!

  • Jason Moon

COMMANDER: Well, don’t all the conversations immediately stop on OUR account.

  • Mike Mayak

The pic of Spooky is magnificent! I say poster or issue cover!

    • D. G.

      True. It is nice.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Damn but Spooky has style!

  • Jac

“Also, he’s been wrangling dinosaurs. It’s really cool.”

  • endymion

Well I don’t know what they’re gonna say to the boys, but I’d celebrate if it was something cheesy like “Boys, there’s a lot to discuss, but first things first, remember to always play it safe and wear protection!”

    • Klaus

I was reminded of this comment when I started the computer just now. I got a pop up: “You are protected.”

  • endymion

    Well, they’re not water tight… (I think)

  • Madock345

There are some positions goggles might be very helpful in XD

  • ComicBookGoddess

Hello out there… are the campers all at the fireworks? Just got home after dropping by a picnic (with target shooting!) on the way home from working long hours.

I brought cherry blossom hard cider and watermelon juice. Anybody got a burger?

  • davefragments

    Hello Campers,
I hope y’all enjoyed the day.

  • Hi, campers!
Just stopping in to say I wont be at camp tonight. I gotta get up early for work so I’m heading to bed!
But I made plenty of s’mores for everyone to enjoy.
*places a plate of s’mores next to the campfire*
    Have a good camp, everyone!

    • davefragments

      Enjoy the night.
      Thanks for the s’mores

    • ComicBookGoddess

Mmmmm. Glad you remembered the GF crackers this time.

I missed Spooky riding a giant archaeopteryx and I may never forgive myself. Because Spooky is the best, and my favorite, and THIS IS WHY.

  • Kristin Wilcox

I love how real you kept Kyle and spooks relationship. Well done.

  • Justin White

this is a very interesting world that you’ve created, as well as the charters
