Oh, no!

Just a reminder: The Young Protectors Volume One is now available on Kindle! It’s just $2.99 and folks with Kindle Unlimited can borrow it for free. Artifice is also available on Kindle and both books make use of Kindle’s advanced Panel View technology where you can just double-tap on the first panel (or any panel) and then tap on the right side of the screen to flow through the panels and pages. It took some extra time to set up but it’s very cool. Bring our team with you everywhere and grab your Kindle copy. 🙂

So! Spooky wasn’t able to get through The Platinum Priestess’s magic. What’s going to happen next?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Nate

    Poor Spooky 🙁

    • Nate

      <- stands ready with Nate-hugs.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Stick hugs also standing by.

    • Heeey. Did you just take your first V? Or have you done it before?

      • Nate

My second, I believe, but the first one was a LONG time ago. I’m usually not up this late (I’m on holiday).

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Yay! Congrats!

        • Congratz and have a great time.

  • Noooo!

  • davefragments

This is going to crush Spooky

  • Waaaaaaah!!

  • WHAT HAPPENS AT 00:00:00??

    Omg, this cliffhanger is giving me a breakdown, both from waiting and Spooky ;_;

    • Klaus

      We’ll see in a second.

      • bronakopdin

        that lasts roughly 3 days

  • Snorlaxation

I feel bad for Spooky, but I really hate that he wasted so much time. Even if he’d managed to break through, with all the time he was losing, there wouldn’t have been enough to then get everyone free of their bonds for them to escape, unless he could then teleport every per son out of there.

    • Klaus

What they were trying to do was not to get the people out before the timer ran down, but to disable the electrocution device.

      • Snorlaxation

Well, considering the amount of time left, even if he’d managed to break through at 3 seconds or less, I wonder if he would’ve been able to disable the device anyway.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I want to hug Spooky so badly.

    • Jeldenil

Me too! Just said the same before reading your comment.

  • syllibub

Damn, I feel for him. But he probably shouldn’t touch the glass.

    • stickfigurefairytales

…Oh my gosh, good point! D:

    • Pietro7

Or just perhaps, touching the glass like that is exactly the right thing to do . . . . (I am remembering how sneaky Alex is.)

      • Keneu

But then Sircea wouldn’t have leaned so carelessly against the glass when she was mocking Duncan, no?

        • Pietro7

Actually, I’m referring to the effects of Spooky’s magic – maybe he punched through the diamond but Sircea’s spell prevents him from seeing the hole. Then he touches it and – voila! 🙂

          • Klaus

I don’t think he tried to make a hole in the box. He tried to reach in through an air hole to disable the device.

    • Takehai

If it’s made of glass or diamond, then it’s not electrically conductive. Both are efficient thermal conductors, however, so it’s probably still a good idea to not be touching it.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I’m less worried about electrical energy and more worried about sorcerous/demonic energy. Specifically, the soul-sucking, murderous kind.

      • davefragments

Diamond is an excellent conductor. It’s almost pure carbon and has all those covalent bonds that just love electricity passing though them.

        • stickfigurefairytales

So, you’re saying that, in the world of X-Men, one could easily electrocute a person who was being held in place by Emma Frost in her diamond form by hitting her with lightning (theoretically leaving her unharmed)?

          • davefragments

The Human body (not even a diamond body) is a good conductor and what kills is the destruction of nerves as the lighting passes through them. Nerve impulses are electrical and lightning overloads them.

          • stickfigurefairytales

But would it be easier to hit someone with lightning if they were touching a really big diamond?

          • davefragments

That’s going to take me a while to think about. Lightning is static electricity and that can behave different than electric flowing through a wire.
My first thought is that anything taller than a person will get hit first and the person second. It’s like standing next to a tree. That’s why people are told not to stand in a field where you are the tallest structure.

          • Stephen Hutchison

            Lightning is NOT static electricity.
            Lighting is alternating current.

          • davefragments

No. Lighting is static electric discharge between top and bottom of a cloud or a cloud and the ground. The difference in positive and negative charge is called potential and when those charges reach the right level, lightning happens.
Plus, if you rub your flingers on a new rug, you can create sparks. Zap our friends, relatives and doggie’s nose.

          • Stephen Hutchison

Sigh. Dave. Talk to a meteorologist or a physicist who specializes in lightning. I used the wrong term, it isn’t actually AC, but it’s not a single “static” discharge. It’s a number of discharges back and forth as the imbalance does not simply equalize at once. It creates a plasma channel (which is also superheated hence some of the burns) and it goes back and forth fast enough to make a prolonged waveform. It is, in effect, a brief burst of alternating discharges between two zones. It has a lot more energy behind it than zapping doggie’s nose. That’s why it behaves entirely differently than ‘static discharge sparks’. Scale, i.e. size, does matter.

          • Klaus

I have seen the remains of an oak tree hit by lightning. It was totally shredded. The lightning had caused the water in the tree to boil, There is a huge amont of enrgy in lightning.

          • davefragments

I am not going to argue. Lightning is a static discharge. It is not Alternating Current.

        • Takehai
          • stickfigurefairytales

Ah, thank you! So the answer to my comics question is no, it would not be easier to hit someone with lightning if they were being held by somebody with a diamond body.

          • davefragments

Sorry, I read that ohm number too fast.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, I missed camping tonight. 🙁 But I’ve been packing because tomorrow I’m headed to Seattle, where my best friend will be getting married on Saturday. I’ll actually be officiating the wedding (thanks to the Universal Life Church), which is kind of scary, but I’ve got all my remarks written and approved, so we should be good to go.

    • davefragments

Best wishes to the bride and groom and I hope the ceremony is beautiful.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Thank you! (And it is indeed a bride and groom in this case)

    • You can doo eeet!!

      • stickfigurefairytales

Thank you!! I think I can!

    • I hope you have a great trip, a great wedding and a great experience.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Thank you very much! I probably won’t make it to camping on Friday, but I’ll let you all know how it went when I get back!

  • Nate

This isn’t going to be good for Spooky at all, really. If memory serves, in one of the earliest renders, he talks about magic being powered by confidence.

And his confidence will be shattered by his inability to save these folks. He’s going to need his friends.

    (And possibly Nate-cuddles. I’m in the book. 😉 )

    • Chris Dangerfield

Very true. It’s a scientific fact that “cuddles,” like smores and other delicious dessertes, cure most of the worlds problems…

      • *looks for AJ and her newspaper*

  • syllibub

I think it was a good choice to have Spooky make eye contact and speak to them directly even though he hasn’t succeeded. It has a good humanizing effect on the people in the box, who tend to become a kind of prop in the midst of all the action, and it makes for a very moving panel. It has the same punch as the initial “what’s in the boooox?!” reveal.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yes, I definitely agree! I found this an extremely powerful moment.

  • I’m kinda hoping for (I think) Saxon’s one theory right now; that the people might not be in the box, and it’s a hoax, and/or that the timer has been a trap.

    • davefragments

I had an evil thought — what if Sircea teleported (or whatever that was) and changed the place for opening the portal and these people die and nothing happens here?

      • We’ll know soon.

      • timemonkey

The comic would likely need to be a lot longer to deal with that kind of situation. Knowing how long the story is going to last kind of makes certain potential twists highly unlikely.

        • davefragments

Quite possibly. I hadn’t thought it through that far.

  • Did he ever try pure Enochian magic? Would suit her to be that sneaky, because that wouldn’t be expected from her. Especially not on a matter of anything with hell involved.

Not that it’s a question he (or I) should be asking himself right now. Have to see that happens when time strikes 00, and what happens next.

Kyle could be up for his family reunion in a sec.

  • jreed3842

I can’t imagine what either is feeling.
Spooky tried so hard and he’s going to watch an entire group of people die.

As for the people there was a glimmer of hope that they would be saved and now it’s gone and they have to accept the fact that they’re going to die.

And I have a feeling Spooky is going to blame himself. 🙁

  • Stephen Hutchison

Annnd. Sircea needs to be stripped of her magic-wielding and tossed into hell.

    • TwilightDreamer

I get the feeling she will be…you know, eventually.

  • TwilightDreamer

    NO!! D:

  • Sniff. This is just so sad.

  • Adam Black

Spooky … Focus! Run to the ring! You to blast Laampros as he comes through.

  • Librarican

Is anyone else bothered by the passiveness of the captives? I want to see them up and moving. Would you have stayed so close to that fireworks show Spooky was producing? I realize that they are tied up, but they are so physically close together I would have expected at least two of them to untie each other, and then maybe help out the others. Or at least rip the tape off their own mouths. I’m frustrated by their inaction. MOVE people!

    • timemonkey

Why are you assuming they’re in a position where they’d be able to untie each other and move around. If Sircea can make the box impenetrable then she can certainly make bonds that don’t come off.

    • Wildroses

There are earlier shots of their hands and feet tied together so I don’t think that they are as mobile as they appear.

    • Keneu

I’ve read once that only 10-15% of people are able to react immediatly when something dangerous happens. Most people either freeze or go on with what they are doing, deluding themselves into thinking nothing will happen to them. That can be a good or a bad thing, depending on what the situation is. Even if that wasn’t the case here, I’m pretty sure that Sircea would find a way to keep them still and quiet, magical or otherwise.

    • Klaus

They have been most likely been in there for hours by now. Once they have tried everything they could think of, they may just have given up.

  • Hours Left

So is this when Fluke does something drastic that causes the timer to malfunction? D:

    • timemonkey

He’s still massively negatively charged. Any change he makes would just make the situation worse.

      • Hours Left

Possibly, but he might try and push his luck. (Literally.)

      • Klaus

Suppose the sacrifices survive due to sheer luck. That would give Fluke even more negative charge. And that would be really bad, right?

      • Chris Dangerfield

Now, if Spooky, with said massive negative charge, were to try and fix the timer… wouldn’t that surely massively break it? No timer = no s’plodey! See the more he tries to improve the timer, the more it will break and that’s actually good luck, which means that he builds up even more bad and it’s an anti good-bad-luck-loop.

(*brains begin to leak out ears*)

        Erm… sorry. 😀

  • For some reason I thought the hostages/victims would be exploded.

  • Unfortunate example of how no matter how powerful you are you cannot save everyone…. oh the feels :'(

  • Saxon_Brenton

    “What’s going to happened next?”
Well, obviously Spooky tries to get to the bone ring, but unless he’s got a teleport spell up his sleeves he won’t make it in time, the rest of the Young Protectors will fail to repel Laampros back through the gate, and there’ll be a full scale demon invasion that’ll be all Spooky’s fault.
I believe I may have mentioned this possibility before.

    • Klaus

Spooky does not know how to teleport.

  • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Aw, spooky, I feel as sorry for you as I do the sacrifices.

  • Nirgal

Do you think I can get a new set of feels?

I think mine just got broken.

  • Has another thought of going UNDER the bloody thing?

    • Klaus

Take a look at panel three.

      • Omar Cantu

i.e. It seems the floor is part of the cage too.

  • fujoshifanatic

Not gonna lie, all I wanna see right now is a deus ex machina of demonic proportions–in particular a young demon boy who may literally have the key to their release. Or anything that may prevent these poor people from dying.

    • Samurai Jack

Like Fluke stopping time in the last second?

  • Jeldenil

Awwwwww,Spook. I want to hug him so bad now.

  • Chris Dangerfield

Okay just kill me now Spooky. I swear that boy wields “the feels” like a sword and cuts DEEP, darnit.

Seriously, you guys have outdone yourselves in sharing his extremity of determination and effort. Between the last page and this one, you show the extremes he’ll go to in order to do what he believes he must to be worthy and good and live up to his own impossibly high standards.

You also do a wonderful job of sharing that crushingly human fear of facing the fact that no one can always do the impossible. Even though we may really really reeeeaaaalllly want to. Sometimes, not even Spooky.

For me this is as cathartic, emotional and visually rich of a moment, as any super-hero comic can hope for. I haven’t felt this deeply since the warehouse. Some of that is just how good Spooky’s character IS and some is really serious artistic hard work. You should all be very very proud. You have all outdone yourselves. Epically powerful and also so emotionally human is so hard to do.

So, Spooky… Alex… just go ahead and stick the knife in and twist. It will hurt less. 🙂 And Adam and Vero if you wring any more intensity of determination and gorgeous pathos out of these pages we may be forced to dispatch the flying robot ninja pigs out to get you. This is all just too good, and adds up to too many feels for regular humans like me. Thank you for starting this short-week (Monday was an American holiday) out with such a pair of nuclear pages.

    • Juliette Leroux

Hey there, first time comenter and recent reader (which means I had the chance of reading all the content of this website in one afternoon – and then re-read it – and then again).
Thanks Chris for expressing exactly my feelings on that page!

      • Klaus

Welcome. Now get used to waiting several days for each page.

        • Juliette Leroux

Thanks Klaus 🙂 The last 2 pages were already a torture…

      • Welcome Juliette!

      • Welcome, Juliette! Glad to have you here!

        • Juliette Leroux

Aww, thanks a lot Alex! I have to say the community seems great here!

    • krissdevalnor

Very well said. Exactly how I was feeling too.

    • You’re welcome, Chris. 🙂

  • Kate G

Let’s just stab me in the chest with a kris, twist while applying sea salt and lemon juice. I am crying with Spooky because I feel Spooky here. I think people who’ve taken care of very sickly, dying relatives know this feeling. That feeling when you’ve literally done everything in the world, but it’s not enough. You can’t save that person. She’s going to die no matter what. So, you as a family choose the hardest choice; you bring your dog (the one animal she loved seeing) to say good-bye to her, then you stop her meals, because she’s throwing them up anyway and wait at her side even though she’s not herself, half out of her mind. My grams lived two weeks after that. I like to think we made the right choice, because she wasn’t happy.

This page is so hard for me. Because, come on, Spooky tried everything and now he has to say good-bye. I need some Kleenex and water. I’ll be right back.

  • krissdevalnor

the feels! I rarely comment even though I read evey update, but this page…damn your storytelling skills are so damn enchanting. This is the saddest moment for me in this comic (yes, for me this is sadder than what Kyle went though.) So many lives… :;(

    • jreed3842

Yeah this hit my feels really hard.
They all have families… People who love them that they’ll never get to see again.
They had a glimmer of hope that Spooky was going to save them and it’s gone.
Spooky will hang their deaths over his head even though we all know he did all he could.

With Kyle he made it out if it. He was betrayed, but he’s alive and has people who still care about him.
These people don’t get that second chance.

I am really having a hard time with this page. *all the tears*

  • Will Parkinson

    OMG, this killed me dead.

  • Mir

The wait for the next page is gonna be tense.

  • Spooky feels D:

  • Shiny Gwilly

i think the whole group and all of us will have to hug Spooky after this, he will not take this well no matter what happens
you tried so hard, Spooky, and everyone was behind you
(everyone already said good things about this page and how emotional it is, but i’ll just add to it a little cuz it really is so well done; with showing the people inside often over the last few pages, and that last panel of Spooky apologizing to them is just so important, and i just love all of it and it makes me cry)

  • lollerilol

    Yaaaas they gonna die!

    • I actually was thinking that myself but didn’t want to sound crass even though my main thought was “If they stop the sacrifice…does that mean Kyle’s dad will not be arriving?”

Because I care more about that then some random people who aren’t interesting in the slightest…and no, I’m not a nice person, I just want to see the world burn.

  • bronakopdin

Will Spooky at least be able to escape himself in time >//////////////<

    • Klaus

Diamond is an excelent insulator when it comes to electricity. I don’t think he is in any danger.

  • Earl Patterson

    00:00:00 and nothing happen

    • Klaus

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • Gstar Macleod

Just binge read everything and THIS is the cliffhanger I stop on! WHHHHHHYYYY!? 😀

    Seriously though… I love this! It’s amazing… I can’t wait for the next page

    • Mary Klemzak

Webcomic writers and artists are the worst and best, aren’t they?

    • jreed3842

Welcome to the comic!!! Glad you enjoy it!

    • Welcome, Gstar! Glad to have you here. (And yes, it’s quite the place to stop. 😉 )

I’m curious, how did you find us?

      • Gstar Macleod

        Ermmmm… I can’t remember now…

I know I was looking for comics with LGBT characters… So….Google maybe?

    • Welcome, and that really is the worst page to reach a waiting time for the first time xD

  • Mary Klemzak

GDI. Well Spooks you did your best. Those intense looks though. *shudders with excitement*

  • Paul K. Edwards

such a wonderful birthday gift XD I just wanted to let you know that I still love and adore this comic more then any other out there.

    • Klaus

      Happy birthday!

      • Paul K. Edwards

        Aww thank you

    • Happy Birthday!!!

      • Paul K. Edwards

        Aww thank you 🙂

    • Happy birthday, Paul! I hope you have a really fun one!

(And thank you so much for your kind words. I’m really glad you’re still enjoying The Young Protectors!)

      • Paul K. Edwards

Omg thank you 🙂 it is the best birthday ever now 😀

    • Happy birthday 🙂

      • Paul K. Edwards

        Thank you!

    • Juliette Leroux

A very happy birthday to you sir!

      • Paul K. Edwards

Thank you and every one else made this a very special birthday for me 🙂

    • Happy Birthday (belatedly)!

  • SchalaRenee

Those poor people are gonna die…but on the upside, YAY DEMON KING!

  • D. G.

Awww. So sad for Spooky and those people. Spooky is such a sweetheart.

  • camelotcrusade

    (draws diagram for Spooky)
    you <———————————————– explosion

  • Jason Moon

I refuse to believe this is how the whole thing ends!

  • Timer reaches zero, the people in the box don’t die, they just suddenly disappear. No booms, no noise, just gone. They were just illusions all along to keep TYP busy.

  • Zephyr10101

    this is so sad 🙁

  • Sapfo

Since we all know that nothing bad is going to happen on the next page, let´s relax and enjoy how good looking Spooky is. Jupp he is a real cutie! ^^
    *denial, famous river in Egypt*

  • Some serious therapy would be needed, imo, after being stared by so many frightened eyes. I don’t know if I could handle dealing with that, personally.

    • Considering he lived in hell….he needs therapy for worse things than that.

      • I get that he’s said it was hard there, but I don’t know.

Seeing real people, a dozen or more, looking at you for salvation sounds like the worst thing ever. Especially since you know they’re going to die and you can’t save them.

        • Yes, it’s a horrible thing that’ll require therapy. I’m just saying that he has serious PTSD from hell. So much so that a lot of his memories are spotty.

  • Pikinanou

🙁 (I wish I could make a bigger sad icon)

  • The last two panels hurt so much. I can’t help my hope of the next page not being so bad as feared. That everything will turn all right for the people in that box, and not go as feared – and in some ways almost expected, since there was a BIG chance Laampros would show up.

Will this end horribly for those people, or is this one of Alex’s typical twists? I fear the first, hope foe the last.

  • That one second left is currently feeling like the longest second in comic history, while waiting for the next page.

Halfway to next page! Thank god it’s only been a 3-day wait for the coming page.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Random bizarre thought… Further down the comments Nate mentioned that as a magic user Spooky’s powers depend on his confiedence, and this episode might weaken him. How about we turn that on its head and examine what happens when it just makes him angry?

We already know he has a habit of keeping dangerous critters (“That’s not a bear. And he wasn’t supposed to keep it.”) and disobeying orders from Commander when he thinks he knows better. So with the innocents gone, a cranky Spooky decides to stop worrying about collateral damage, goes “No more Mr Nice Guy” and pulls out something in the Don’t-point-that-thing-at-my-planet class that vaporised Laampros perma-dead.

Of course, it would be extremely unlucky if that happened on this side of the portal, meaning that because of the way the Priestess set up her spell the inter-dimensional door is stuck in ‘open’ and gazillons of demons pour through. It would be just like the standard demon invasion, only they would be leaderless. Oh, wait a second, there’s Laampros’ heir standing right next to the portal.

Huh. Has Fluke’s luck equalised yet? Which way does this go?

    • Klaus

So that is how Kyle becomes one of the most powerful champions the world has ever seen.

    • Nate

I could see him going full-blown Dark Phoenix, to be honest. After all, Spooky is one of only two mages who haven’t gone insane (and, to be honest, I’m not sure about Sircea 😉 ).

Nobody knows why. But something like this….

  • I get that the people are dying, which is sad. But the only thing that came out of my mouth after reading this page was: “Aaaawwwww…. Spoookyyy… (> ^ <) "

  • Sunseahl Silverfall

You know… I think it’s intresting that the big clock, essentially…. looks like a clock. it appears to have no other devices in or on it. What exactly is supposed to kill these people? Electricity? okay… but how would that much(the clock box) electric charge be conducted between the metal rods at the ends of the box… Tesla coils produce MASSIVE electrical charges but none of that appears present or looks “big enough” to conduct that kind of charge.

Fire like Kyles? You’d STILL need massive amounts of power to heat the rods to cook the crystal box.

Water? What water? The box is sealed and the amount of water that could be in the clock is insufficient for frying ALL the people in the box.

    • Magic. It is enchanted with magic.
That’s the only explanation I can think of.

      • Sunseahl Silverfall

Magic doesn’t just remotely trigger, though. Every time we’ve seen the Priestess use magic that magic has either been in a state of activity(the protection of the box) or activated by herself(portals, deflections, magic missiles)

We have yet to see her ever have a power that goes from a dormant to active state.

        • Megan Staples

Mystic events usually have a time to begin on their own. The Witching Hour is 3am, the height of All Hallows is midnight, Sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, dusk and dawn are transitory events that can be a trigger to a bigger event.Any of that could be a “remote trigger.”

          • Sunseahl Silverfall

Possibly. But She’d still have to have the actual activation. Those moments are the height of magical air… not the actual magic itself. She’d still have to create the magic somehow to achieve the effect.

I did think of one magic that is passive to active, but I don’t see Sircea as being big on japanese incantation scrolls/prayers to remote trigger such a thing… but who knows.

        • Well, it’s timed. So technically it’s active. It’s power just hasn’t been released.

        • Diggit

Maybe it’s a set-up that uses something like Spooky’s potion bottles? Like the timer goes off and a mechanisim breaks something holding the electrical magic in it..?

          • Sunseahl Silverfall

We’ve never seen her use potion bottles…. besides… where would she keep such things?!? o.O

          • Well, there was the time she gave Duncan the pouch of invisible powder on the way to his date in Hong Kong with Kyle.

The Tenth, Eleventh and Twelvte Doctors say “I’m so sorry” a lot. Poor Spooky, he must not fail much. Any failure means lives lost in the hero business, so it cuts up every hero who’s worthy of the name.

  • Keneu

Hey, I’ve just found this coming out simulation game, and it’s really interesting: [tw for homophobia and domestic violence]

  • Jeff Baker

Congrats again to the artist. Panel three is a portrait of despair…

  • Kinda want them to die just to see something different from scenes like these.
But we still have the 1 second and anything can still happen there.

    • Ireyon

Yay, I’m not the only one to think so!

Please don’t let this be yet another last second rescue, we know those already!

      • Keneu

Even if the military arrived in that split second, I think they would prioritize containing the invasion over saving the hostages.

  • Omg! I’m so happy.
Back during the KS for YP vol. 1, I was sad that I wouldn’t be able to get any posters, and there was SO many. Back then a pledger, who got a high tier, (who also saw/followed me in other comments sections) contacted me, and offered me some of her posters. Since she only needed a few posters, and not all she got.

Pass forward to the time the surveys came out, and she still remembered her offer and contacted me again. Asking if I was still interested, and got a big YES!
Despite having to get a big box online that fit, and paying a buttload in shipment, she still sent sent me most of her posters – and I came home to this awesome present today 😀

Sometimes the generousity from people who barely know you (here only online) is amazing <3

Also highly amused, because the package has been opened for inspection in Danish customs. Some Danish custom worker got a good view of dicks, with the NSFW posters xD

P.S. Oh my~ Either I missed it online, or it's not been shown yet, but the NSFW Duncan/Spooky poster that was made (based of voting results) sure is something 😉

Y’know, in the adventure “Edna & Harvey: Harvey’s New Eyes”, whenever something bad happens, cute little gnomes appear and simply paint the whole mess a lovely shade of pink, which protects the protagonist from seeing all the bad stuff.
Gnomes. We need gnomes. At least I do. And a lot of pink paint. O.o

    • Nate

Sounds like a pink variation of “Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses” 🙂

  • Juliette Leroux

Sooo, around which time in which time zone are the pages usually posted? Not that I am impatient or anything, hmm, just to know…

    • Saxon_Brenton

The comic updates twice a week, approximately midnight Tuesday and Friday, as measured from the west coast of the United States where Alex lives. There are of course slight variations in this, but Alex makes a point of being punctual, for which we love him (big fandom hugs to Alex).

Camping usually starts in the few hours beforehand. Just place any virtual muchies you may have brought on the virtual trestle table over there by the virtual campfire. Try the lime-and-coriander potato salad, it’s quite good.

      • Juliette Leroux

Oh man, I would love to camp with you guy (and I make a mean chocolate cake I would be very happy to share). But in my time zone, it would be before sunrise, and I confess my undying love for my comfy bed. I am thus doomed to late comments.

    • Tuesday and friday evenings in US timezones. Alex is in San Francisco on the West coast, and usually updates mid-evening his time, so closer to late evening/midnight on East coast.
I’m in Mid-Europe, and pages are mostly up around 4:30-6:00 (a rare few times up to a couple hours later) on wednes/saturday mornings.

      • Juliette Leroux

Yes, I would be in the same timezone as you. So, that will be a breakfast comics for me. Thanks DanishWolf! 🙂

  • Gingerx

    Love it!

  • Justin White

🙁 this is going to eat at him, i’m sorry spook

Domenico Alberti in the 1730’s is credited with popularizing the “Alberti Base” — a musical device that breaks a chord into its three notes and uses those notes as a rolling base line for the melody. It creates an atmospheric accompaniment for the melody.
PDQ Bach, the 23rd Illegitimate son of Johann Sebastian Bach and a renowned organist, copied the technique for the pedal board of the great cathedral organs of his time. It was a spectacular effect… A few years later. PDQ Bach named his new pedalboard technique the “Tootsie Roll.”

Where Franz Schubert unfortunately died before completing his Symphony No. 8 in B minor which is more commonly called “The Unfinished Symphony.” It is only two movements of the usual symphonic four movements.
PDQ Bach has the “Unbegun Symphony” because PDQ was born too late to begin it and thus only has the final two movements.

        He’s funny…

        • It’s funny how much modern music rips off from classical without even knowing it. But then again most patterns of music have already been done. There are just only so many notes

          • davefragments

In classical music, it’s the Dies Irae theme that can be found hidden in many pieces of music.

          • So classical ripped music off from someone else?

          • davefragments

The Dies Irae in particular is the oldest piece of written music. It dates back to the very beginning of Gregorian Chant and music notation. Most people recognize it as the “March to the Scaffold” in Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique

          • davefragments

Quoting another musician’s musical theme inside your music is a form or praise.

It’s like 5th Symphonies. Composers treat them differently because of Beethoven.

          • The more you know! *shooting star* 🙂

          • davefragments

            You watch Rachel M…

You could go looking for PDQ Bach’s “Erotica Variations for Banned Instruments” or the “Echo Sonata for Two Unfriendly Groups of Instruments,” or if you are really desperate look for the “Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycle and Balloons”

That last piece seems to have no live performance on youtube.

          • I just may.

          • Pretty!

    • davefragments

PDQ Bach is the most justly ignored composer of the Baroque Era. PDQ’s motto was “If it ain’t Baroque, don’t fix it.”
