213 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 61

Yikes, man! What now?

Over at the Patreon page, there are a couple exciting things going on.

First off, we’re now less than $220 away from unlocking Silverjow’s awesome (and sexy) The Annihilator pin-up.

Second, $5+ Patrons can now immediately download a full-color digital wallpaper of Kyle saving a kid from a fire. Comments have included “omg this is really nice! I like the fire so much, but oc also the dynamics of the situation!” and “Kyle is perfectly heroic, and great work on the fire and smoke by Alex and Gabriel!”

Here’s a sneak preview of that image:

AMW_Comics_TYP_ETE-KS-V1-BONUS-ACTION-PRINT-1_400

$5+ Patrons will get to download the full image as a wallpaper immediately. $10+ Patrons will be sent a high-res image with over double the resolution on the 10th of September!

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! Kyle thinks they should trust what The Annihilator is telling them. Will Commander and the rest of the team agree? And what’s up with Duncan in that last panel?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Ah, ouchy.

  • syllibub

Hm. I wonder if Laampros’ mark is hurting him? Although it doesn’t look like anything is happening with the box just yet…. Or if some external factor is what’s making him a “blank slate” to Amanda, maybe some development or interference related to that is causing it?

Then again, he’s been pretty thoroughly pummeled, so maybe he’s just generally in agony. Whatever.

  • Mitch ^_^

  • davefragments

I think the excitement is going to start…
However, I think we will shortly discover the depths of the Platinum Princess’s duplicity.

    • Klaus

Since there has been no excitement so far.

  • I repeat O.O

  • stickfigurefairytales

Tsunami, honey, I appreciate the sentiment, but I don’t think water is gonna be all that effective in breaking into that box.

    • Zeruk

I guess you gotta give the people hope you’re trying…
I’d be a bit nervous if none of the heroes did nothing but think.. :/

      • stickfigurefairytales

And you’ve gotta try something, even if it’s a long shot, I guess.

    • Spooky must still be trying too. Can’t give up, maybe spell will weaken.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, if I were there, I’d probably try throwing rocks at it, just in case it might help.

        • I suppose they could drag Duncan over and use his hair to cut the glass.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            XD Hahahahahah!

          • *bows* thank you, thank you very much!

          • syllibub

Okay, I just made a really gross noise. That’s hilarious!

          • 😀 Surely after all he’s been through it has some special ability!

          • I cackle-giggled xD

          • 😀 It could work. lol

    • Saxon_Brenton

But… but… The phenomenal power of sheer bloody-minded persistence. They’ll never know if they could succeed if th just give up.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Fair point.

  • Did Amanda just happen? As in she got enough and tries for brain read anyway, or did a the spell of PP’s, maybe for Laampy, activate? Maybe the mark/seal on his arm is doing something.

My first guess is Amanda for this.

    • syllibub

Yeah, maybe she’s trying to read him so forcefully that she blasted him?

    • Zeruk

I actually think it’s Laampros, unless Duncan has no innocence whatsoever in him…I hope he has some… at least :/

      • davefragments

        I think Laampros, too

      • Could be Laampros. Could be Amanda trying to find out if he may know something – maybe something he doesn’t know he know, from being around when box was made/people put in, that could help them.

Duncan being a blank slate is (in my theory) likely due to PP, because they couldn’t risk anyone (Amanda) was reading their big secret plan before time. Something could have broken that spell now, if it’s not Amanda trying hard to break through.

        • Zeruk

Mmm possibly I would like to just note that Amanda doesn’t seem to be looking at Duncan’s way, not that she has to when using her powers.

And honestly I hope she doesn’t resort to being forceful in a situation like this… : (

She see’s Duncan at his most weakest, I think that’s cause enough to not force her powers on someone enough to cause even more terrible pain.

Also If I remember Laampros talked about how no normal human could bear that tattoo Duncan has. It could be that… it’d be a nice time to pull it up since most of us forgot..

          • I think Amanda would do it, because she wants to save those people, but really good point about the mark. I had forgotten about that. Will be interesting to see next page!

            *sigh* 4 days away.

          • Zeruk

If she does then WOW! That’d be a bit of character development. “Just hold still Duncan…this’ll hurt me more than it’ll hurt you…”

But I guess we just won’t know until then…
You can always re-watch some Steven Universe til then ;P
            That’s what I’LL be doing! : ]

          • The Long Wait

          • Yes, a whole day extra.

    • Saxon_Brenton

FWIW, the script says injuries from the explosion of the dampener plus Red’s punches.
That said, we readers have noted before that there are times when Alex needs to edit the scripts to keep upcoming plot points hidden. In that regard I’m with Zeruk and dave about the possibility of Annihilator feeling Laampros’ arrival somehow.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thanks, Saxon!

      • syllibub

Right, I think if Duncan had been in that much pain the whole time, he wouldn’t be crying out just now — there would have been earlier indications. So far it’s seemed like he’s mainly struggling to stay conscious.

      • Thank you. I should make time to read the script sooner after updates. Usually do later in the day. Then again, not reading the page script right after it’s up leaves me not knowing more than people not on Patreon, so leaves more space for theories 😉

Edit, Oh yeah, forgot to mention the script edits. Noticing where one must havbe been made is fun.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I have to say, I’m impressed that Amanda’s managed to keep her pants so clean with all this dirt and mud around.

    • davefragments

      Edna Mode dirt shedding pants

  • Zeruk

Nothing much to add, besides the fact of how much I love Kyle’s expression in the third panel. It’s so detailed, and filled with emotion. I just Kyle doesn’t have to witness innocent people hurt, he’s still young after all ;,[

  • Actually, I think it’s the lack of the Magic Hip Straddle. Kyle is no longer applying it. 😛

    • davefragments

      Internal injuries

      • Are you saying it was the MHS that harmed him?

        • davefragments

No the exploding power thingie (I forgot the name of it)

          • Oh very well, if I must bring in reality. 😛

          • davefragments

I keep thinking what a neato ending it would be if Kyle had to go back to the hell dimension to get Laampros returned and the portal closed and then opens a portal for himself with his fire power to get himself back. I don’t know how the magic works to do that, though…

          • Well, if he went there while returning his father, he might have to stay there for a time and while there learn to use his powers to their full potential and in the mean time getting strong enough to escape.
That or he does have hands… I can’t believe I just typed that.

          • davefragments

There’s something funky about his power that might or might not exist in Laampros. That’s just a thought.

          • Well he was able to burn Duncan while in Laamprosland.

          • davefragments

            I’ll wait and see.

          • That’s all any of us can do.

        • purplefoxglove

I think the MHS is a very effective and advanced first aid method that needs to be applied here. It should also be practised on a regular basis because you have to put just the right amount of pressure on very specific parts of the victims body. *solemn nod*

          • I concur. I do believe there is even a specific chapter in the superhero on how to apply the MHS called: How to apply the MHS and when.

          • purplefoxglove

Yes, I hear that there are even regular first-aid-courses dealing with this topic in particular. I belive they are booked out extremely quickly because there is a rumour that THE expert on medical aid is invited as instructor frequently…and who doesn’t want to be MHSed by our lovely Spooky Jones? 😉

          • The way I heard it, Prof. Jones has a hard time getting much instruction in, what with all the screaming and fainting. I mean THE Spooky Jones. Sigh. 😀

  • Zeruk

Hahaha I just realized it’s just the main commenters all here, none of the regular crowd is here yet.
Is that how it always is? xD

    • Yeah, some times. It varies. Having been part of several long-comic communities, I call it ‘waves’. The names of commenters will chanhe along the way. Some will always be around, and some will stop commenting much, but new will come.
It’s a over all different crowd commenting now than it was 1-2 years ago, just as it was different from the beginning crowd. Waves 🙂

      • Zeruk

That’s pretty cool actually. And after looking back there are a few good comics i’ve been away from. I should really go back…

I used to go on a webcomic binge. (I mean 15 comics+ with a bunch of tabs all open xD) But long story short, I started doing a bunch of other stuff and had no time to binge like I usually do.

        • But many of the current regulars will show up to comment later. It’s the campers who’s around now 🙂

          • Zeruk

Haha well i’m glad to be apart of the campers club, it’s fun talking to some of my favorite commenters! <3

          • Adam Black

            The times are too unstable.
12 oclock on the west coast? 12 on the East coast?
            930 the east coast? ( 6 west )

It used to be 1-3 on the east coast !

Thats like an 8 hour varience

          • and the campers are almost a core group that also sees people come and go

          • Klaus

Hi! (Waves). It’s 7:27 and I just woke up.

          • Morning, though you’re late. When I can get up to camp around 4:30am, you can too :-p

          • Klaus

I might do that. But then again, I might not do that.

          • Adam Black

Because Its often published 4-6 hours before what it used to be.

          • No it’s not, not that long before. More like 0-2 hours. For a while it’s been pretty concistent that most pages are now up between 4:30-5:15am my timezone. Some times a little later. Before, it mostly happened between 5 and 6:45 my time, and if the page was ‘late updated’ it was up after 7am, but that was rare.

Back when it updated a little later in the day, I almost always got to see the page, and comment some on it before going to work on wednesdays, and I left at 7 am. At one work I left home at 6 and still saw most pages before I left.. I’ve only moved my alarm clock time half an hour forward to camp now vs. before 🙂

          • Adam Black

            I remember 1 and 2 AM EST.

Now its often around 9 or 10 pm

    • Saxon_Brenton

In addition to what DanishWolf said, for a lot of fans the update of midnight on the West Coast of the United States mean that it’s oh-dear-crap o’clock in the morning. Those waves of waxing and waning enthusiasm are only reinforced when you have drag yourself out of bed.

  • Kit the Coyote

I was just thinking how comic it would be if they are all using their super powers and magic to try and disarm that box and getting nowhere. Then someone just walked up with a stick and smashed the clock through one of the air holes.

    • *lol*.. True, no one has tried anyhing non- power/magic on it yet.

      • Like a pair of sewing shears. Since it’s not, you know, an implement of war. But then, neither is water… hmmm

        • Adam Black

          Try your cape.

  • Stephen Hutchison

If they poke it with a stick will it go away? Probably not.

Duncan looks like he’s getting premonitional punisments from Papa Laaaampros.

    • Adam Black

      Premonitional Syndrome from Hell?
Get the man some Midol , stat .

      • Stephen Hutchison

        (warning: incoming sexist joke)

I’m not sure that’ll work. Even injured Duncan’s no pussy.

(That was a 4.5 on the shame-o-meter scale.)

        • Adam Black

Oh Please, without his power, Duncan couldnt handle terrestrial PMS . He’s probably got a splinter.

          he’s like Captain Hammer with a boo-boo

          • Stephen Hutchison

The page where he’s fighting Hunter and Killer without powers says you are wrong. And yes, they were working for him, but they were also going way over the top.

          • Klaus

I think it is a safe bet that they did not know they were working for him.

          • Adam Black

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_PfNm9nysI

The page where he gets burned in hell , shows I am right.
He had his powers once he got out of range.

PLus none of that counts , since he planned that.
            He probably took Meta-morphine.

          • Adam Black

He was expecting it. He probably took painkillers. He was prepared.

  • AseretZone

Well, the rest of the world minus America, that is. Per their agreement, he leaves that one alone. Is Big Daddy coming in already?

  • fujoshifanatic

Hm, maybe true to his age, Anni is feeling a weather change in his bones right there? As in an extreme heat wave about to sweep across the earth? It better be that, as opposed to some kind of death groan (you will NOT DIE on us Anni! Even if you are bad and may deserve it a little).

  • Jeldenil

    Is it his spider sense?

  • Adam Black

Damn Shame, they dont know any Psycho(mo)kinetic Safecrackers .

    • timemonkey

Even more of a shame they have no time to get anyone even if they did.

      • Adam Black

        Freeze time spell?

        • timemonkey

If they could freeze time they would have used it to take out Duncan and PP.

  • Klaus

What happened to the list of characters? There is usually one right after Alex’ comments.

    • Klaus

      It has now appeared.

  • Klaus

“You have my mark. Fail me and I will destroy you.” That is what Laampros says back in chapter 2 (p. 26). Is it enough that Duncan keeps his part of the deal to the letter, activating the key to open the gate? Or is telling the YP how to expell him failing him?

    • Ooh, good question.

    • Adam Black

      i think so.

A better question is does Duncan get his wish,
and Then can PP use his magic ( repair the walls ) when hes pushed back though?

maybe that was the trap the whole time.

      and @saxon_brenton:disqus is right.

  • Mir

I wonder why Amanda hasn’t been able to read his mind?

    • Adam Black

      What if hes a robot?

      • Mir

For a robot he’s pretty dumb.

        • Adam Black

But if hes programmed for feelings , you just broke ’em.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Where can I purchase my own Duncanator 9000? Maybe a Deacon too? I’d like the agreeable non-smashy sexy versions of those robots. And I want the sexy clean version of the Duncanator 9000… you know without the bloody nose.

        Can I order online? 🙂

        • Pikinanou

          Beware of the shipping cost.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            HA!

          • Klaus

That does not deter the shippers here.

        • Sapfo

There is still not any on the market, but if you are will ing to try out the demoex Duncan, then there is only one in the world. He is smooth, sexy and tends to make deals with devils. Hope you will like him. ^^

        • Adam Black

No joke. When you said “deacon” i felt my pants move.

          • Chris Dangerfield

Yup. Deacon is sort of the ultimate TOP.

    • bronakopdin

I bet it’s because Duncan is still somewhat influenced by the power dampener, he totally absorbed the explosion, it might be aftereffects also keeping other people’s powers off him, at least for the moment

      • Mir

Amanda says “He’s been a blank slate this whole time, even without his powers.” by whole time does she mean since they’ve met or since the dampener?

        • bronakopdin

well I can’t say what Amanda means when she says that. I can’t read her mind like she can x’D
I just assumed it might be because of the dampener. And that thing did work since they arrived there so it’s possible…

          • Mir

I know you can read her mind, I believe in you, do it! I must know! T_T

    • Possible effect of the mark, or maybe a spell of Sircea so that Laampros couldn’t read his mind to see they were going to doublecross him at some point.

  • bronakopdin

I like how Kyle speaks good of Duncan here, he’s an angel and I love that about him so much 🙂

Now Duncan is knocked out… and I wonder if it’s because Paul got so close to him x’D

  • Kate G

I love how worried Kyle looks in Panel 1. He’s listening intently, but you can see the worry in his body language as he’s no longer straddling Duncan, which puts pressure on the lower body. He has his right hand near his wrist, a good place for checking Duncan’s pulse. The neck is another place, but his left hand isn’t quite in the right place. It looks like it’s there for more reassurance or stability for the pose Kyle is in.

With the final panel, we definitely know Duncan’s head hurts. Either it’s due to the spell starting or he’s definitely having brain issues. Considering the knocks to the head, we could be looking at both.

But, seriously, I so love the tenderness, intent and worry in Panel 1. You have to love Kyle. He worries about everyone.

  • Minyassa

“He wouldn’t just set us up to be slaughtered.” …like the people in the box that he helped set up to be slaughtered. Nah. Not a thing like that. He was a part of putting those people in that box. He’s evil. Come ON, I mean there’s compassion and then there’s just being naive, Kyle!!

    • timemonkey

Eh, the people in the box were a means to an end. Something he thought needed to happen for the greater good. Getting Kyle and his friends killed would serve no purpose, if he wanted them dead he would have killed them himself or let PP do it when he knocked them all out.

      • Minyassa

Oh, I agree as far as purpose goes, I just think it’s ridiculous that Kyle would think that is somehow a sign that the guy isn’t evil somewhere deep inside. He seems to be equating “not a slavering bloodthirsty sadist” with not being evil.

        • timemonkey

Good and neutral people can do bad things given the right reason. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been saying Duncan’s a villain the whole time. I was only argueing that he does things with a purpose, not just for the hell of it.

          • Minyassa

I definitely agree with that. I still think he’s evil, though. I’m really not buying his “greater good” stuff…I think he believes it, but he is seeing the world through a warped lens. Lotta dictators have done some icky things calling it for the greater good. Sacrificing lives to a fiend, with all that implies, is just too nasty to even contribute to an actual greater good. I think what is frustrating me is that Kyle just seems to be making up excuses for someone because he wants very badly to believe his version of him. I can’t even blame that on youth, I know too many adults who’ve made up excuses for abusive spouses, etc. I just hope that it won’t be ultimately romanticized here a la Twilight.

          • timemonkey

Thing is, there IS an actual world threatening problem going on. The walls really are weakened and they need to be repaired. Now, we’re all pretty sure that PP was working for her own benefit but unless someone else can find a way to repair the walls Duncan and PP’s plan actually will have been the best case scenario.
Now, my personal theory is that PP’s been weakening the walls herself to set this whole thing up, in which case the problem may have already been solved.

  • Will Parkinson

Oh, Duncan…. Heroes always try to find a way. Don’t you know that by now?

  • Shiny Gwilly

i partly agree with Kyle here, there is some good SOMEWHERE in there, though there is the fact that Anni is part of the pact/ceremony and all that to bring daddy demon in, so there is the possibility he’s just saying that so the process goes thru and he lives thru it…even someone like Anni is capable of being scared of death (/daddy demon)
but? i’m too much of a sap and i’m willing to believe him too
also i wonder how much time is left on the timer…

  • D. G.

I think Kyle’s dad and the demons are going to come through the gate. Not gonna be fun or easy. Typ should regroup and strategize. I don’t think they can do anything for the people in the box. Sadly.

  • Fay onyx

Anyone else get the feeling that if those people in the box die then Duncan is going to die? Like, story-wise, whatever Duncan did before he met Kyle was the past that can’t be changed, but if people die since meeting Kyle then there is no way come back from that morally and romantically speaking. Their romance can’t continue because Kyle will always be thinking about those people. Also, that is the sort of thing that people die noble deaths to make up for.

    • timemonkey

Romantically they’re pretty much already dead. What Duncan did to him is unforgivable, and that was on top of everything they had being built on lies and manipulation.
Really, the only possible way I could see them as a couple is if Laapros uses the eternal youth bargain to turn Duncan into a teenager physically and mentally. Then the Annhilator would be dead and gone and he’d be a different person.

      • Stephen Hutchison

My thoughts exactly, as left explicitly unstated several weeks ago.

    • Klaus

Duncan arranged for them to die. It does not matter to Duncan’s morality if they happen to survive. If he manages to save them, that is another story, but that seems extremely unlikely now.

  • karmakat

i get the feeling that “daddy” is ringing at the “door”

    figuratively…

  • Nate

I’m guessing an extremely-delayed ice cream headache. 😀

    • T Dibbler

This does seem like the most logical explanation.

  • Niggle

I remembered to check on the new page! Go me! 8D

  • I can answer that for you, for Alex.

Alex’s reply, to someone who asked something alike a couple months ago, included this about Tough: “due to abandonment by the artist (and my current commitments to The Young Protectors) it’s on hiatus with no specific date to re-focus on it”.

Have a nice day as well 🙂

  • Jason Moon

Methinks PP doesn’t like Dunc’s seeming turnaround… But he may be telling the truth. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvenEvilHasStandards

  • SchalaRenee

Hmm. Laampros and Duncan are bonded…so maybe the painful headache thing is a sign that Laampros is coming. I hope so, really I do. It would certainly be an interesting take on the story (nevermind the pornographic images of the demon king I want to see). The heroes failing to stop hell on earth and then having to deal with what comes after…I don’t think I’ve seen that much. If so, it usually gets magically reset with some world healing magic or something. I don’t think our heroes here have that type of power, unless PP has a change of heart, which I doubt.

……I’d love to learn that PP is Kyle’s mother. Her and Laampros getting it on…hot.

  • TwilightDreamer

Once again, feeling very proud of you Kyle 😀
Anni?? :O….yeah yeah, still angry at you, but what is it??

    • That’s easy. Father is coming.

      • TwilightDreamer

        well yeah, but details 😛

  • Doki’s pressing thoughts: Why do they call it a steeplechase if they don’t chase steeples? There was no chasing of steeples in the steeple chase. There were stationary hurdles though. Why don’t they call it something that has hurdle in it? They couldn’t really call it a hurdlechase, as they aren’t chasing the hurdles. The hurdles are not running from them…

    • Chris Dangerfield

Annnnnnd… ladies and gentlemen… these are the cosmic things that the DOKIDOKIBAKA considers during her day when most of us are just snoozing and relaxing.

The Doki master-mind never rests. We must consider ourselves lucky. 😀

(but what if the Steeples run really fast?)

      • Doki just happened to watch the women’s steeplechase and was confused when there wasn’t any steeples. It is a very misleading name.

        • Chris Dangerfield

          Understood! 😀

          • There were also no horses. I thought steeplechasing was a horse thing.

          • Kate G

Don’t worry. I too was also confused when they said steeplechasing. Why is not just called an obstacle course?

    • Here is the origins of steeplechasing. I got most confused when you mentioned it because why would they separate a horse race into men and women. But in searching for the reason why it’s called a steeplechase I discovered that they have appropriated it into a freaking foot/hurdle race. As a once avid horse person I find this some what, well, annoying.

      • Yeah, I would not have been so confused if there had been horses involved. ^_^

        • I got excited at first. Steeplechase! At the Olympics! Granted it’s not necessarily the safest thing, but still! Harrumph!

          • Kate G

@admiraljane:disqus Well, if it makes you feel better, the crosscountry part of the eventing portion at the Olympics could have just been called steeplechasing. It was brutal. Only 3 riders made it under the time and without any jump faults/refusals. THREE. And I think 11 were disqualified because the horses either wiped out, pitched the rider or the horses said “hell no” three times. It was brutal watching it live.

I haven’t watched the show jumping yet which recorded today, but I do know that two riders were disqualified for overuse of their crops/whips (which is just mean!)

          • I have a friend who is very passionate about Three Day eventing (She was once long listed for the British team). I understand that there has been some fighting with the FEI and other organizations because the safety of the cross country courses have started to decline. It’s true cross country has always held a certain amount of danger, but it shouldn’t be so difficult that more and more horses/riders are getting injured.

Then again, my old dressage trainer complains quite often about the corruption in the FEI.

          • Kate G

One of my dad’s train buddies is a former eventer and her friend (who gave me two dress coats that I wear for shows! Very expensive wool ones) still does eventing. They both will tell you it’s changed quite a bit. It’s definitely more dangerous. You’re expected to go faster yet still have clean runs over higher or oddly angled jumps. The one at Rio was just brutal and really scary. Narrow angles, narrow jumps and you’re only given ten minutes 15 seconds to complete this 3.6 mile course. I had to close my eyes a few times because I may know nothing about Eventing, but I can tell when it looks scary and it looked SCARY.

What struck me is this: the commentators (who were amazing) said that in order to complete that trip, these horses had to go – on average – 21 mph the entire time over hilly terrain, jumps, and water portions. Secretariat – the fastest horse alive – ran the Preakness at 36 (or something like that. I think it was 36) miles per hour on flat land. It’s INSANE. We’re basically asking these horses to be racing horses and do jumps.

I was very surprised when I heard the commentators say only 2 bits where allowed to be used at the Olympic level and they both are relatively soft-mouth bits or you could use a hackamore. I was very surprised to see a few hackamores!

I rarely use a whip and it’s usually with the Scoobster. I have a very gentle whip from Fleck and I don’t use a lot of force with it. I don’t like causing pain as it causes me pain!

          • Just from my memories of the courses my friend rode 20 years ago, yeah it’s changed quite a bit. It’s a shame that horses are not being considered when these changes are being made. They just want bigger and badder and not thinking it through.

          • Kate G

Oh, yea, definitely. You want horses to be horses after all.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Catch those steeples!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Hello campers. As promised I am on vacation at my sister’s place at the beach. I’ve come down with a little bit of a cold (little bit tired, little bit achey, lots of fluro yellow snot) so I’ll be forgoing any gardening work today and *merely* be taking the dogs for a walk on the beach in the clear winter sun.

In the meantime, in the comic: Several pages ago Nate joked that perhaps Spooky could conjure up a small demon to eat the timer; if so Spooky’d better do so quickly. I’m still expecting Annihilator’s pain the be a signal for Laampros’ arrival. That said, it occurs to me that the current situation (with Red Hot kneeling beside Annihilator, and defending him with the opinion that there’s good within Annihilator somewhere) is incredibly close to the mocking image that the Priestess conjured up back at the end of chap.3. Crikey, was it really 11 months ago? Better put in a link for readers to remind themselves: http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-63/

    • stickfigurefairytales

Poor Saxon! I hope your cold goes away soon.

I like Nate’s idea about the timer. 😀

  • davefragments

    Hi y’all…
I still don’t understand the hurdles. I’m not sure that I care. They just ran the men’s 100 meter hurdles.

    • davefragments

Danell Leyva of the USA just won a silver medal in parallel bars.
And the next is women’s floor exercise.

(This is on NBC. They tape delay the news)

    • stickfigurefairytales

You have to run really fast and also jump over things. It’s hard.

      • davefragments

Yes but they are knocking over the hurdles. I always thought they couldn’t do that.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, that surprised me. But apparently unlike the high jump or pole vaulting (or jumping in horse shows), it’s apparently allowed. The trick is that hitting the hurdles often slows you down and can even trip the runners up.

          • davefragments

That makes sense (sort of) …

          • I know. I would at least think they would add some penalty per hurdle knocked over.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That would make sense to me.

          • Even if it was just a tenth of a second. I mean most other competitions with jumps of some kind do that, it should be that way across the board. Hit too many and you get dq’d

          • stickfigurefairytales

Speaking of disqualified, I felt awful for the French guy who false-started in his quarterfinal heat. Apparently that gets you immediately disqualified, which seems incredibly severe.

          • davefragments

I saw that. There is no freeby on a false-start.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            🙁

          • Now that I didn’t know. I thought they would just start over.

I think the french swimmer in the woman’s 10 k open water “marathon” swim was disqualified. At the end she swam over the Italian swimmer to hit the time board to register their crossing the finish line.

          • davefragments

There was a time when the organizers used to grant one false start but apparently not any more. That surprised me too.

          • That’s kinda mean.

          • davefragments

            I agree

    • Why have hurdles and then have steeplechase?

I was watching table tennis for a few minutes yesterday. It was the oddest thing. I mean the way the were at once hunched over the table and leaping about.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Steeplechase made me laugh when I first saw the course because of how few hurdles there were in comparison. And also you can apparently step on the hurdle-type thing right before the water pit and jump off of it. Very different.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Now I kind of want them to take the steeplechase framework even further and have it be a full-on, Nickelodeon game show-style obstacle course.

          • stickfigurefairytales

You could win a gold medal in Legends of the Hidden Temple!

          • THIS!! I WANT TO SEE THIS!!

        • So basically an obstacle course for people. Sure guys. Yeah, they won’t know we’re pretending to be horses.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Just don’t start making horse sounds out loud.

          • HA! Don’t canter, don’t canter…

          • stickfigurefairytales

Or do the Monty Python coconut shells thing.

          • They might be able to get away with a snort. I mean, it would steal your breath.

          • davefragments

I want the Olympic version of the French Insults …

      • davefragments

I don’t know why hurdles and steeplechase for people.
I know what a steeplechase is for horses.
Track and field was never my sport. Halfway around the track gave me shin splits and left me gasping.

        • Yeah, running as far as I’m concerned can kill you. I can’t jump for anything, and jumping over things is really not happening.

          • davefragments

I was one of those kids that wanted to play electric organ and took lessons. A few years later all that became “I want be a chemical engineer”… That ended a career in music.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I remember my vain attempts to do a (relatively quite low) high jump in gym class. I am not a good jumper.

          • Not vertical, not long, not nothing. A large chest not withstanding. I just can’t jump. And for some reason, I run at something and I’ll balk right before I get to it.

  • Pashira83

I just wanted to let you know that Doki lost her Internet in a storm earlier. Her computer is fine, but it is suspected that her Ethernet cord got fried. She is unsure how long until she will have internet again, but she hopes she will be back soon.

    • davefragments

Thanks… Better the cable fries than the computer.
Next year that will be a new deep friend food at the State Fair — deep fried bacon wrapped ethernet cable on a stick.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh no, poor Doki! Thank you for letting us know, though.

      • Pashira83

It was a fairly bad bit of a storm, they think there was actually a lightning strike close to the house.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Oh my! I’m glad their house wasn’t actually hit.

    • Poor Doki! Thanks for the news.

    • Oh noes. That sucks. Hope this is resolved fast.

  • davefragments

Did anyone else see the attempts at 3m spring board (diving) in the strong winds yesterday? It was truly a sight (ugly) to behold…

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Diving isn’t done indoors?

      • davefragments

        Not in Rio this year.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Huh. Well, that sucks.

          • davefragments

            Yes it did.
One touched the board. several over-rotations. All sorts of drifting. Some of the divers said they learned to dive outdoors and it didn’t affect them. It was a mess, though.

  • Good morning from here 🙂

Sitting in the dark, early morning, only a lighter hint in the horizon is telling of the sunrise coming soon. Camping in early mornings this time of year makes it clear how the daylight time is slowly, yet fast, getting shorter every day towards the winter solstice. A couple weeks ago it would be sunrise now. A month ago it would be daylight outside at this time.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Good morning, Danish!

      • Hiya. And in the time it took me to write my first post, it is nearly sunrise now. Very close 🙂

    • Morning Danish!

      • Up, up, up and about.

        • 😀 It’s getting darker sooner too. 🙁

          • A weeks vacation a month away. Time moves slow, but siddently it will be here and I get busy to be ready.

          • I would love a vacation. Just to see something different.

          • This only came to be in the very last moment, but now I’m excited.

    • davefragments

I’ve noticed that the dark comes earlier here. Summer is halfway gone.

      • It sneaks up on you. Suddently it’s no longer daylight when you get up, as well as getting dark earlier in the evening. I like that it’s bgetting darker outside, for sleeping, but it’s still a sign that winter is coming 😉

        • stickfigurefairytales

And then the cast of Game of Thrones starts coming out of the woodwork.
