There has to be! Right?

Over at the Patreon Page, things are moving quickly towards our new Milestone Goal at $6600 for a special Silverjow pin-up of The Annihilator. After the usual beginning-of-the-month drop of the Patreon number due to credit card issues, a bunch of folks have been putting in new pledges, so we’ve bounced back to $6350, now just $250 away from hitting our goal!

Here’s the sneak preview of The Annihilator pin-up:

Of course, the full image shows him in all his sexy, beefy glory. If we hit that Milestone Goal, $5+ Patrons will be able to download the full wallpaper and $10+ Patrons will be send a high-res version with over double the resolution!

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! The Annihilator has taken this moment to express his admiration for Kyle and the team. But Commander is having none of it, and gets The Annihilator to admit that he believes that there is nothing that can be done to save the sacrifices. But is that the whole story? Or will Kyle use his magic hip straddle get him to reveal some way our heroes can save those lives?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there!

  • DUDE!!!

  • davefragments

But there has to be a way!

  • Wait? Magic Hip Straddle? Oh my!!

  • Eris, elder daughter of Nyx

Uh oh! It is as we feared: the Duncanator doesn’t know how to stop the spell! Will our heroes figure out what the Duncanator doesn’t know? Or are those people doomed? Will Kyle get to have another meeting with his daddy . . . and will the Duncanator have to fulfill his end of the pact in a way he didn’t intend?

  • davefragments

Gee, whizzies, Duncan is really getting teary-eyed.

Of course, when the portal opens, he gets eternal youth. So Duncan ain’t doing as bad as he looks.

    • I think with his powers gone, he’s seeing all that could have been for himself had he found good people like Kyle did.

      • davefragments

I think he saw it when the first portal closed. He really did enjoy bumping fuzzies (that Deadpool for that euphemism) with Kyle and he saw just how not-cynical and how honest Kyle really was. I think Duncan grew up unloved out at least in a neglectful household and used crime as his replacement for love.

      • davefragments

But the demons will do his dirty work for him.

    • timemonkey

Eternal youth won’t be as fun without the invulnerability to protect him from all the people he’s angered.

  • syllibub

It really does seem like Duncan would have taken an entirely different path if he had just had support and friendship in his formative years. I feel for him, but I also appreciate Amanda telling him to help out or put a lid on it.

    • davefragments

      I think you are right

  • syllibub

Did we ever see what happened to the second key?

    • I was wondering where it went.

    • davefragments

I can track it until about ch3 page 100 and then I lose it.

    • davefragments

I took a second look at larger images. . .
I can track the second key up to the last page of Chapter Three. I checked about 6 pages into chapter 4 and couldn’t find it.

      • I can only assume that Herself stashed it after they caught the kiddos.

    • camelotcrusade

Guys, I got this. True love is the key to everything, right?

Start kissing, people. (Plus, it’s been a while)

  • TwilightDreamer

    …..not gonna believe you anni….not gonna believe you…not gonna…….
…damn it!! Despite his superior acting skills, I really don’t think he’s lieing…he doesn’t exactly have any reason to right now.
I repeat after Kyle in that “there has to be a way”….but, I also fear that there won’t be… 🙁

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’m pretty sure Fluke is going to vote in favor of punching Anni a few more times to see if that changes his mind about it being possible to rescue the people.

    • Michael

I’m gonna have to say I’m behind Fluke on this one.

    • Klaus

      Heroes don’t so that.

  • HermeticallySealed

Something tells me the spell could be disrupted if a certain linchpin was . . . removed, from the equation.

    • stickfigurefairytales

*squints* Are you suggesting that they kill Kyle, or Anni?

    • Adam Black

      remove the Brand

  • David Welbourn

Oh my. I think I see where this is going. What if, instead of Laampros showing up, someone impersonating Laampros showed up? Could the spell be fooled?

  • davefragments

The Brazil Team just entered the stadium and the PA system is playing BRASIL by Ary Barraso, lyrics by Ary Barroso & Bob Russell…

(And a very strange, extremely strange movie by Terry Gilliam which gives me the giggles at the choice of song. But It’s a samba so it’s party time.)

  • Michael

In other news, lying liars who lie were found to have lied.

    • bronakopdin

      what if that’s a lie?

  • Koe

Hey, we have a guy with the right genes, you know, right here. Wake up, Kyl-o, show us that you’re daddy’s boy!

  • endymion

    Improbable, nothing’s impossible!

  • Adam Black

    Fluke is the answer.
But what is the right question?

    • Klaus

The question is: who should stay further away.

      • Adam Black

        harsh but true.

  • Jeldenil

One of them has to die, is my bet.

  • Nirgal

Can we all agree that no-bullshit Amanda is the best Amanda EVER?

    • Yes, yes we can!!

      • Will Parkinson

I dunno. I like the playful Amanda. The one who is more like a den mother than a general.

        • Amanda is both and more. But out in the field she’s best as the Commander and not taking any shit. 🙂

  • D. G.

Well I’m out of ideas just like the team. Alex what r u up to here???

    • andyhibb

What’s going on here? Obvious! PP doesn’t like Hell. It isn’t a nice place to be – even as Empress. ( We know she was Empress of Hell before she gave up on the place as being uncomfortable/ a bad place to live.) While she was Empress she had a son. When she left she put her son on the throne and left him to hold it – she had had a horrible marriage to get the throne herself. Well, her son Laampros kept the throne also by having a horrible marriage, and sent his son – Kyle – to Earth so he could survive his mother. We know from Spooky’s story that the other Lord’s of Hell have demon spies looking over/searching Earth for warnings/something, actually Laampros’s son who is no longer in Hell. You can not open the glass box and save a bunch of captured humans because there are NO humans in the box – those care the spies from Hell. If released, they send messages to their jealous masters, and all the plans are ruined. What plans? To find Kyle a good marriage – unlike his grandmother and father – to someone who won’t be a drag on him. In other words, Duncan will demonstrate he really cares for Kyle, and will be de-aged to about 24 and immortality, and have powers restored. Kyle will age to 21 and then stop and demonstrate his immortality, and have his older man/husband. And Laampros will have his Macho son by having him also marry a younger man, Mitch who stops aging at 18.

  • D. G.

Anni is acting like he’s on his deathbed. Not good.

  • It’s quiet in here – was everyone watching the Olympics?

Amanda is awesome on this page. Amanda is *always* awesome, but she is particuarly awesome here. Interesting that she seems willing to believe that the Annihilator might be sincere – I wonder how much she knows about his past, particularly given her military connections?

    • Kate G

  • charlieeton

My theory… because he is now human… the demon will also use him as one of the sacrifices… but he also needs a human as a vessel to stay in the world… and Annihilator will be the vessel. Then Kyle and others tries to save the world as well as him

  • Mir

Duncan please not now lmao. They’ve been telling you to drop it since three pages ago. I love how no one is really giving a shit.

Also, last panel Kyle? Dammmmn, blue eyed hottie.

  • Sunseahl Silverfall

Aaaaand… cue new sub-comic about Sircea and Duncan.

  • Columbine

Dammit Duncan stop with the reforming villain cliches!

I hope they’re not gonna suggest the whole ‘well we could kill them ahead of time to stop the ritual’

  • Kate G

Anyway, did anyone feel like that was the longest Parade of Nations ever? I guess I got really used to how fast the Parade of Nations were from London and Sochi (London’s was the fastest PoN ever at basically 2 hours) and this one seemed to draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag. You would think for being a party nation it would go really quickly a la London. Nope, it dragged. It felt like FOREVER.

Enough about the Opening Ceremony (I really could talk about it forever. There is so much to talk about! Costumes, the dancing, outfits of the PoN, the stories Brazil put together, the music, the torch….this is why you don’t talk Opening Ceremony with me), but look at this page! I don’t think Duncan is kidding about being seriously injured. The blood leaking from his nose coupled with his stilted talking suggests internal bleeding which is very, very serious. Kyle looks very worried as well in the last panel. Kyle looking very worried has me worried.

I get that Amanda is being hard because she needs to be, but I also think there is something very serious going on internally with Duncan.

    • davefragments

I think Brazilians learn to Samba before walking.

      • Stephen Hutchison

We had a Brasilena exchange student when I was in highschool. She told us exactly that.

        • davefragments

        • Kate G

Did she teach y’all the samba while she was there?

          • Stephen Hutchison

No, she tried but it requires having hips that move in ways that mine just won’t.

          • Kate G

HA HA HA. I’m an equestrian (riding horses require you to have a loose lower body) and I still struggle. Of course, it would help if I had someone helping me, but YouTube is all I have.

Men have a harder time learning dancing (compared to females anyway) I think because your really taught only to be able to move your hips forward and backward. Swaying hips are bad in the male universe. Your hips should be able to go forward and backward, side-to-side both ways, and a full 360 counter and clockwise both ways easily. This was the hardest thing for me to overcome when I started riding as my hips are tighter than most people’s. I constantly have to stretch my hip flexors, hamstrings, quads, psoas…if it connects to my hips or lower back, I do targeted yoga for it. Then I have my abs and shoulders! Bleh!

      • Kate G

I think they just learn to dance first before walking. I loved the samba costumes. The whole first part of the Olympics had the tropical roots of Brazil, the middle had a very cosmopolitan feel and then the samba had that beach theme that was awesome!

  • bronakopdin

Duncan looks so very misrable, especially in panel 5…
I love how Amanda has nothing of that x’D
    professional to the end!
Well surely there MUST be sth right?!
Or this comic would suddenly feel oh so much like reality D:

  • KatKaleen

Okay, Duncan won me over, I believe him. As in: I believe he doesn’t KNOW a way to free the hostages. But there must be one. Maybe Flyboy could do something? Pick up the cage and drop it? Not from too high up, just enough to break the walls? Some broken bones and cuts from glass shards aren’t as bad as being electrocuted, right?

    • Mir

I was thinking they could dig under but then saw the hostages weren’t sitting on the ground, the bottom is glass too :/ or Kyle melts the box and it gives everyone inside third degree burns! (though he probably couldn’t even do that because ya’know the magic and all…)

  • Vaira

Ok, to me Duncan is still trying to go with the ritual. He does what he can to stop the team from rescuing hostages.
I may believe he lost his power, although he may fake even this, because if the team beat Sircea, he has no chance against them all. So he does what he can to buy time.

  • Will Parkinson

You’re making me like Annihilator. Please don’t. I wanted him to suffer horribly for what he did to Kyle, and now? Poor Anni.

    • davefragments

But Duncan made the deal with Laampros. He’s the one on the hook when the portal opens.

      • Will Parkinson

Yes, but you know Kyle will try to save him.

        • davefragments

Personally, I would have beat Duncan’s face to a bloody pulp and most of the rest of him with it. But then, I’m not Kyle nor am I young, cute, adorable, and still idealistic like Kyle. (I’m rolling my eyes at parts of that.)

  • For a moment I was on the ‘yikes! does this man Duncan has to die to break the spell?’ road.
Then I remembered that the spell magically carved into his arm wasn’t about the gate opening, but the terms of Laampros giving them the Americas and eternal youth when he arrives. So that one wouldn’t work. they were put in there by Sircea, and then the box was sealed with magic.

Somehow, if there IS a way, I think it lies within Kyle, since Sircea isn’t anywhere around (and probably wouldn’t help in any way if she was). We saw how Kyle did something in hell that he wasn’t supposed to do. maybe he can do that now too.
At least half of Kyle, and his fire powers, is of hell origin. The spell is made to get a king of hell there. Somewhere in that info there could be an answer.

Last other solution solver I can come up with could be Paul, and his bad luck turning into something good. Otherwise I fear the sacrifices are a bye bye goner – unless it can help if Mitch can fly them away from the scene of danger, and that will break the spell put on the box.

But my biggest bet is Kyle.

    • Klaus

If the victims were accidentially freed, Laampros would not come to Earth. Then he would not be able to bring his forces to Earth. That in turn would deny PP the power she needs to repair the walls. And that would ultimately lead to the walls crumbling and Earth going back to being just another circle of Hell. Now that would be bad luck. Wouldn’t it?

      • Stephen Hutchison

If you believe the Priestess’ narrative.

        • Klaus

          Always a big if.

        • Nirgal

Well, thanks to Spooky, we have independent confirmation that at least part of that is true.

  • Nate

    I don’t buy it.

Duncan goes from fighting the Protectors to “Gosh, now that you’ve beaten me, I see how special you and your friends are.”

He may indeed not know the solution (although I can think of a few that Sircea may have missed).

But he could also be STALLING.

  • Earl Patterson

Stalling! Stalling! Simple plan… Have mitch pick up cube and take it to somewhere far far far… after all he’s able lift car

    • timemonkey

Probably doesn’t matter where they die.

      • Earl Patterson

then… kill them before daddy come though gate

        • timemonkey

Them dieing is what opens the gate, that’s kind of the whole point.

  • Mitch looks like he is one finger away from flipping off Duncan. Mitch is just too adorable no matter what he is doing. ^_^

  • davefragments

There is an out and out lie on this page. It took me awhile to figure it out but I finally did… The spell is cast — Chapter 3, page 88

    And Duncan did it.

From THE PIRATES OF PENANCE: Pirate King: Do you mean that in order to save his contemptible life, he dared to impress upon our credulous simplicity?

    • Klaus

Duncan cast the spell that will let Laampros into the Earth. That does not mean that it was he who cast the spell that sealed he box.

      • davefragments

Duncan in his teary eyed, almost an apology, “oh I’m in deep regret” and “Gee, you are all so wonderful” mode
just said “Not until the spell is complete” in panel five when he knows that the spell is complete. He said the words that summoned Laampros and completed the spell. Now he plays on Kyle’s sympathies and goodness.

        • Klaus

The spell is not complete until the gate has opened.

  • SchalaRenee

I want them to fail to stop it. I wanna see Kyle’s dead sexy demon daddy. I want a full frontal Laampros pin up…I’d donate to Patreon to see that. What can I say? I like demons. It’d be even better with Laampros and PP (both totally naked and exposed) wrapped around each other. That just sounds hot. And come on, no one is evil enough to satisfy PP EXCEPT a demon king!

    • xLizardx

I think it would be interesting if they failed and had to contend with the realisation of this mooted “hell on Earth”. It would definitely be an original and compelling direction for the story to take: how frequently do fictional heroes save the day in the nick of time?

How often, on the other hand, do they catastrophically fail, and then have to attempt to rectify that mistake, even though they, and their entire world, may be irrevocably broken?

    • davefragments

That idea makes “Behind the Green Door” pale by comparison.

    • PP sees her self as a Goddess, would she really sink so low as a Demon King instead of an equally evil God or Goddess? Or someone who is her equal, but is someone she can mostly control and manipulate?

  • Fabulous Alien

I might be a horrible person, but I don’t believe one word out of Duncan’s mouth…

    • elisuccia

he hurt us all… 🙁 he has to prove his good-meaning (god my english is awful! Sry) 🙁

  • Derkins

It seems hard to believe we’re going to watch all those people die, but at the same time, it’s felt imminent that we’d see Kyle’s dad again. I know I’m not the only one whose thought so. Hrm.

  • Jason Moon

Commander to Annihilator: “A Winner is NOT you.”

  • “I underestimated you. In every way.” Especially your love for Spooky. 😉

  • Daddy is coming!

…maybe…I’m not sure why but I really want him to show up, although that might be excessive, there is definitely so much more that has not been revealed in terms of that relationship.

  • Chris Dangerfield

Thank you gang. The page (all of them right now) is lovely. Each week these “page-ups” are a high point and it really is special to have at least one comic I NEVER can miss, no matter how busy my meat-life gets. So, truly, thank you all.

Okay some random thoughts of entirely subjective merit (or maybe none at all, your choice obviously):

    1) I don’t think Duncan dies here — here’s my highly scientific reasoning: he looks like 227 miles of bad road. As much as I like seeing Mr. [beeeeep] brought low, he ALWAYS looks like a seriously sexy fecker and I always thought if we were going to have some sort of Stockholm Syndrome moment he would be lying in Kyle’s noble forgiving arms and they would both look incredibly sexy and he’d gasp out some really important crazy-ass thing with his last breath as the tears coursed down Kyle’s gorgeous cheeks and I’d get really mad and throw my book across the room.

I NEVER thought he and Kyle would have a dying exchange looking like the Makeup Dept was on strike.

I mean look he has blood and snot running out of his nose in 3 of the panels, which makes him all blotty… or… snoody… well you get it. Blood + Snot, not a good look on Big D.

So, I just don’t think he’s dying unless Kyle gets frustrated and finally toasts him… but that then messes with the hero/forgiveness thing. I guess we’ll have to see.

    2) Regarding the box of “snackrifices:” Unless I’m over thinking, Duncan just said, “there is no way in… not until the spell is complete.” I’m sorry since I’m sure this was discussed endlessly below and I can’t stay up late enough to read everyone tonight (so apologies for any repetition), but that sounds like they might live after the spell completes if (?) something unlikely happens.

Maybe Duncan is that unlikely something. I don’t know, but it sounds like theres a weepy synchronicity in Duncan sacrificing himself to save the snack pack and thus gets Kyle to forgive him (in a platonic overall sorta way I hope) and, oh noes, it’s too late. He dies. Yayyyyyy! 🙂 Oh no, I mean sadness and woe. Oh, I mean… Well whatever.

    Anyway just a thought.

    Ewwwwww… snot & blood… oh sorry… I’m repeating myself.

LAST POINT — RE PATREON — omg Silverjow sexy pinup of Duncan wantwantwant:

I have given up yet another double tall iced latte per month — PER MONTH PEOPLE — and all it’s wonderful life giving caffein — so that I can help our hard working, exhausted from shipping, Silverjow communing, Alex and up that patreon by a whole CUP OF MY COFFEE.

Listen people if I can sacrifice like that for sexy Duncan (Silverjow is a ridiculously sexy artist) than I know that others on this list can also. So, we yell at our spouses and coworkers at 3 pm on the third Thursday of a month, due to caffein deprivation. I think that’s a fair trade. They can handle it. Right?

I mean they’ll have another 30 days -ish to recover before the next month’s grumpy tantrum caffein-less day. So all in a good cause I say.

So, please, I urge all who can to take that poor sacrificial coffee and throw its monetary equivalent at THE YOUNG PROTECTOR’S Patreon to do it.

If enough people up that $5 thing…….. well pin-ups. So so so very worth it.

Thanks again artists. this graphic novel is already too cool and it’s just getting better. Heh heh heh… DEMONS ARE COMING!! 😀

    • Saxon_Brenton

[increasingly obscure and self-referential in-joke] Huey the hellsnake refuses to give up coffee, not for any amount of tummy rubs. However, the others are all willing.

  • Becky

  • karmakat

okay guys…if kyle’s father is a demon that means his power are the SAME BASE. why not try to use HIS POWER full blast on a part of it…can really platinum blonde spell be that powerful if she needs his “daddy’ help???

    • D. G.

      Thank you doki.

  • davefragments

Olympic swimming and ladies gymnastics and an update

    • I was just thinking that it would be cool to have pairs gymnastics, kinda like pairs skating.

      • davefragments

        Pairs diving freaks me out.

        • diving freaks me out period. Especially the high dives

          • davefragments

Back in college I learned how to do 1 meter and 3 meter dives. on 3 meters, It’s a skill to not be nervous and to execute the dive or get hurt.

          • They are amazing those that do it. But it’s the height thing mostly for me.

          • davefragments

I’m not good at heights. Even back then I was not thrilled looking down from any height. That’s what I meant about it being a learned skill to not be afraid first, and then to execute the dive second.

NBC is just showing the Phelps 20th Gold Medal awarding ceremony. He’s hamming it up.

          • Phelps is an incredible swimmer. I need to find the Ladecky win.

          • davefragments

She’s spectacular. She’s got a big future with her speed.

          • Oh yeah!

          • davefragments

I saw part of the Windsurfing competition today and it roused my love of sailboats and other vessels that move on water without motors. Those little things can do up to 30 mph in a 10 mph wind.

          • I love sail boast, but the ocean…and other big bodies of water scare the crap out of me.

      • davefragments

        Pairs gymnastics is called ballet

        • Nah! Ballet doesn’t do all the flips and things. Now, ballet is incredibly athletic, I just thought to see two gymnasts on the floor exercise or on the vault or uneven bars.

          • davefragments

I don’t know why men don’t do the uneven bars but I do know shy they don’t do the balance beam. Tried that damn thing once and found it hard to walk a straight line. It’s a hips thing. Parallel bars are strength. Two guys or girls on the floor exercises would have to be tightly choreographed.

          • It would be awesome to see!!

Men’s gymnastics is pretty much all about strength. But I have wondered why they don’t do the uneven bars myself.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Like acrobats almost, when it comes to the uneven bars – although they would need to make them much taller for two people. That would be cool!

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m watching as I camp, too!

      • davefragments

More swimming a 4xsomething with Phelps in it

        • davefragments

          4×200 meter freestyle

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yup! It’s really long.

  • davefragments

    ooh, oooh….

  • stickfigurefairytales

Phew, I made it! We had a big thunderstorm here that kept knocking out our power, and thus our internet. But it’s over now!

  • davefragments
  • Mohrovia

Screw it: if Kyle and Mitch aren’t going to get together, send me Kyle. I’d gladly burn up or find a way to survive.
