The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 57

159 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 57

Over on the Patreon Page, $5+ Patrons are now able to download a very sweet, romantic pin-up featuring Fluke and Flyboy, flying the more-than-friendly skies. Comments have included “It’s YP meets Peter Pan meets Titanic, it’s just so awwww.”,  “Aw, that’s so cute and sweet. It sort of reminds me of that date-flight scene from the first Superman movie…” and “it’s very romantic, that moon of all things! Titanic indeed x’D but I mostly love their faces, their expressions speak volumes :)”  Here’s a sneak preview of that:

Folks who join my Patreon now will be able to download the full image as a wallpaper immediately. Patrons who pledge $10 or more will be sent a high-res version with over double the resolution on the 10th of August.

But that’s not all. Patrons loved Silverjow’s Tsunami pin-up (which $5+ Patrons, even new ones, can still download immediately). To remind you, this is a preview of what Silverjow did with Tsunami:

Pretty cool, huh?

So, I’ve decided to create a new Milestone Goal. If the Patreon hits $6600 (less than $200 away), all Patrons will be able to download a digital wallpaper of Silverjow’s completely new, never-before-seen pin-up of everyone’s favorite silver fox, The Annihilator! (And $10+ Patrons will be able to download a high-res version of the pin-up, with over twice the resolution.)

The Annihilator may be a bit rough on these current comic pages, but Silverjow has managed to bring the sexy back for our hot supervillain. Want to see why it’s so good to be bad? If we hit this Milestone Goal, you will! 🙂

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! Even stuck on a deserted island, The Platinum Priestess is still making things difficult for our heroes. Will Spooky be able to break through her dark spells? Or will they need The Annihilator to spill the evil magic beans?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Punch him again Kyle!

  • Okay maybe I was a little blood thirsty. But I do wonder why his mind is blank. Did Herself or someone else cast a spell on him to protect him from having his mind read.?

    • davefragments

He may not be completely powerless.

      • Yeah, his head is apparently invulnerably hard. 😛

    • Wildroses

I wondered if it was a side effect of the dampner which was used on him in a way nobody intended. Maybe as well as having no powers (Kyle was quick to believe that despite their history because he felt different) his body is now immune to other superheroes using their powers on him.

    • bronakopdin

maybe he’s just dazed from the punches x’D
how much can he think even, his ears might still be ringing pfft
(sorry for that one ^^ it’s like a German saying. You say it after someone hit his head or got hit on the head x’D)

  • davefragments

Now we know why Sircea fell through that porthole with a smile…
After our gang of superheroes fights Laampros (Which she believes that they will lose the fight) and Laampros sucks the life out of Duncan, then she will return and claim her queenship and be Lord of the two American Continents. Laampros would probably laugh in her face at the idea she thinks he’s that stupid.

    • I think she looked in pain, not smiling, when she fell through the portal. In pain and literally smoking – ouch!

Her butting heads with Laampros; that feels almost like a given if they’re not otherwise stopped first 🙂

      • davefragments

I don’t think that she’s powerful enough until some demons come through and she sucks the power from them.

    • Klaus

Why would he suck the life out of Duncan?

  • Librarican

    Drats! Missed the virgin

  • She may have been thorough, but I think Herself may be underestimating our Spooky!

  • Doki wants to know what Mitch is looking at.

  • three minutes and twenty-nine seconds left. I’m gonna need more nails to bite.

    • Wildroses

What to start making bets on how long this three minutes and twenty nine seconds of comic time will take to pass in real time? I’m going for 7 months myself.

      • davefragments

        two pages…

      • I’m terrible at betting. o.O

      • D. G.

        My guess is a month.

      • amusingmurff

As long as it doesn’t hit shounen-anime levels of time keeping, I can deal

  • Librarican

Is anyone else concerned that Spooky is still bleeding? Or is it dried blood? I know he said his self-healing would take some time….

    • I think it’s dried blood. There hasn’t been more running since he got up.

  • Librarican

Those hostages seem pretty chill too, with less than 4 minutes left of life. I’d be banging on the glass, regardless of the bindings.

    • davefragments

They seem to be giving Tsunami the evil eye, too…

      • Jonni

They probably don’t have too much faith in super-people right now, given their circumstances. Lets hope the YP can change their minds…

        • davefragments

What if they are true believers and volunteered not realizing they were the sacrifices? Or what if Sircea promised them some sort of afterlife benefit like becoming demons?
She’s the tricky one of the evildoers.

          • I think the possible believing went out the door when they were bound and gagged with gaffa tape, and them in tears.

          • Jonni

Ooh, that’d be a fun twist.

    • bronakopdin

they might just already have given up hope. We don’t know since when they were kidnapped exactly

  • Wonder if Kyle could threaten him with a fiery fist.

    • davefragments

That’s the Torture Conundrum — does he tell the truth or anything you want to hear to stay alive?

      • Good point. I suppose it could be worth a try in this instance.

        • davefragments

Kyle could perform a rude act and go total flame-on while Duncan dies in his delight.
(that’s as civil as I say this. It makes a great mental image but … )

  • D. G.

I didn’t think of the glass box being magically protected. Nice Alex. I hope Spooky is up to the task.

    • davefragments

I think there’s a battle with Laampros in their future…

      • D. G.

I think ur right. Unfortunately for typ.

  • Chris Dangerfield

I agree with AJ, fire is often a very good motivator.
Lovely page friends. Always my week’s high point!

  • timemonkey

    Maybe Mitch can smash it?

    • D. G.

I think it would be too dangerous for the people inside.

      • timemonkey

Ordinarily, but there’s a bomb about to go off and kill them all anyway.

        • D. G.

          Good point.

  • Marie

Because it’s a super hero narrative, I feel like battling laampros is inevitable. At the same time, Sircea must have had a secret (being so annoyed by Amanda), and Spooky is pretty damn powerful himself, so I do feel like they would in theory be able to stop it, if they all were a bit more collected.

  • Blank unreadable slate? PP magically security wired his brain too, didn’t she?

Maybe Spooky is the best one to ‘let loose’ on Duncan’s brain, if they/he can’t do anything about the glass box’ magic. I still fear, as said before, that the spell doesn’t need PP present to still go off.

Poor hostages. How long have been kept in that box to look so .. defeated? It’s like a mix of hoping it works and a resignation of being trapped. Then again, they now see Tsu having trouble getting through, and they’ve witnessed quite a lot in a short time, both visual and many/likely verbally. Meta-people are NOT their favorites at the moment.

    • bronakopdin

I like the idea of magic keeping Amanda from reading his mind!!

    • Possible side-effect of Laampy’s mark?

  • Brian Hopkins

Kyle seems to like his ongoing straddling position…

    • Fist locked and loaded, ready for another punch if needed 😉

      • Brian Hopkins

Purely pragmatic defensive stance, sure. Nothing suggestive here, move along.

  • davefragments

For all those foodies among us:
A friend of mine just sent a picture of a Kyoto specialty — a small octopus about 4 inches long with a quail egg stuff in its head and cooked real fast (that means it turns red, in case you’ve never seen cooked octopus or squid (calamari) )
Served a stick and ready to eat like those sickening corndogs and deep friend snickers at county fairs.

    • D. G.

I like fried calamari. I don’t think I would try that specialty.

      • davefragments

I’ve had those small octopuses fried with garlic in olive oil and served with a rice stuffed tomato as part of an antipasto. They were fun and a bit chewy to eat.
AND, I know how to make the stuffed squid tomato sauce for the Seven Fishes On Christmas Eve.
I am, however, currently allergic to fish. So I don’t partake anymore out of necessity.

        • D. G.

They look like they’d be chewy. That’s what would stop me from trying it.

          • davefragments

            uh, yeah…

  • bronakopdin

yet another work in progress page where I cannot see what is still supposed to be “in progress” x’D Vero’s colours are just too awesome 🙂

so finally we see that timer… barely three and a half minutes left O___O I hope they can do sth about this friggin cage >___>’
Maybe Duncan just underestimates our Spooky, I really hope he does T___T

    • I’ve only tried one page where I could see/noticed a clear difference between WIP coloring and final page, and that was the page where Woody first fully showed. The before and after ‘golden glow’.
Vero does exceptional work in adding final coloring details to a page.

  • karmakat

okay sorry but this is WHEN i punch him again, with some flame, telling him ‘SHUT YOUR LYING PIE HOLE!” sincerely…

    • bronakopdin

I wonder whether he’s lying… it’s about Sircea’s magic how much can he really know and understand?

Even if she explained to him, who knows whether she told him the truth?

      • karmakat

she is the kind that would lie to her own mother if you ask me. or to a demon’s face. so i wouldn’t even believe whatever she says, on any subjects, even with a truth spell on her.

        • bronakopdin

well yes, I know, that was my point x’D
so even if she told Duncan whatever, which I doubt in the first place, this means it’d not be him that lied here ^^’

          • karmakat

            oups sorry lol
but i would still punch him once more so he doesn’t try to “Gloat that they have won” or whatever like that lol

          • bronakopdin

  • Jeldenil

Oh dear. Kyle, get him to talk. I think this is -the- deciding moment.

  • amusingmurff

    “We spared no expense”

  • Gregory In Seattle

What is Tsunami supposed to be doing? Pouring water into the air holes? I don’t see how he expected to be able to break open the box.

    • He can make hands/fists/strings of water, as seen a couple times. He was supposed to get water through the holes and rip the cords out of the clock device.

      • Gregory In Seattle

        Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!

  • So even if Duncan did decide that throwing in his lot with the team rather than Sircea was the best way to stop whatever it is he thinks is coming, he has no way to convince Amanda of his sincerity. Doubtless Sircea had the general possibility in mind if she was the one who installed a security barrier on Duncan’s mind – locks stop people breaking out as well as breaking in.

  • Chris Dangerfield

Would laying Duncan flat on the top of that “about to explode” glass box encourage him to talk… hmmmmmm? Hey, just thinking out loud here. 🙂

(okay, I’m a blood thirsty SOB… what can I say?)

    • Klaus

Who says it is a bomb? It may be gas, or even electrocution. Even if it is a bomb, the box is most likely super strong. It may contain the explosion,

  • Rick T

Meanwhile Kyle’s just hanging out, straddling Duncan.

  • Nate

It occurs to me that the best way to defeat Sircea’s protections is to think “outside the box”.

    Pun most definitely intended. 😀

    Seriously, though:

Kyle could try to melt the glass. We already know his powers are more potent than even Sircea might realize.

Mitch could try the rock thing. in the far corner of the box. Sircea may not have prepared for that trick, since it’s one Mitch had been practicing in secret.

Hell, Spooky could summon a small demon to eat the timer. 😉

  • Kate G

O.O The box’s ticker is going down slowly and there’s no way to get the people out…or is there?

Maybe Mitch needs to get telekinetic friend to open the box.

IN OTHER NEWS, for the final show I got second place! YAY! It seems I have forgotten what my diagonals are. *scrunches face up* Phooey. I know what my next lesson with my new coach will be. BUT, BUT…Scooby – my rascally horse – whoa-ed the minute I told him to this time instead of horsing around like normal. All it takes it making my reins super short (the joys of being short) and being firm. It might have felt way too satisfying to finally do that. He got lots of pets for that.

One of our new horses (Blue, a really dark bay) came out for desensitization training while horses were being switched for a new class. We got 2 new horses (Sassy and Blue) and 3 ponies (Clementine, Chief and Sasha) a few weeks back and they are being trained. Blue got a little anxious seeing all of the people and noise, his right rear hoof banged the rail, tail swishing and his body tense. He was not feeling it so he was brought back to his stall. I felt really sad for him. It must be hard getting used to a new home.

AND THAT is my horse story of the week. (Well, second, right?)

    • kuku

Congratulations and I like the idea of getting Mitch’s sweet friend over to help. That dumpling-cheeked boy is actually my favorite. He looks like a real, doesn’t-spend-his-life-in-the-gym person.

      • timemonkey

Of course they’d have to get him in like four minutes and hope he has enough control to not crush everyone inside.

      • Kate G

I think there is a few of them who don’t look like they train in the gym. Spooky doesn’t really train much because he’s more flab than muscle (and that’s what makes him adorable.) Kyle, while his suit makes him look muscle-y, isn’t like Tsunami or Fluke in muscle mass. You can tell from these two pages:

I dislike it when people say there aren’t “real” people in this comic. These are all “real” looking people to me. They all have beautiful flaws in their appearances, only Tsunami is really that upside down “v” shape (broad shoulders, 6-8 pack, trim waist) that men try to attain in the gym. There are POC characters, the main character is a minority character (a gay male), you have a female villain whose goal is NOT revenge on patriarchy or revenge for losing her husband/lover/child (I’m so sick and tired of that trope) and you have a female leader who got her leadership rule not because she’s a freaking female or because her parents are higher up (I mean, her mom is an Admiral, but as far as we know she didn’t get it because of that) or because she had sex with the admiral, but because she has the qualifications and she kicks freaking ass?

Yes, I’m getting a little huffy, but sometimes I wonder if people look at all of the beautiful details Veronica and Adam put into the comic. They just ADD to the characters. Kyle has a mean cowlick on the back of his head. Mitch has a habit of fiddling and pointing his toes. Spooky doesn’t like having his hands out of his pockets. Tsunami rarely uncrosses his arms; it’s a security blanket gesture for him. Amanda gives short, concise direct orders. She’s never one to say more than necessary unlike Fluke.

I’m sure I’ll remember one for Fluke, I’m just out of brain power. Details! I love them!

        • kuku

Sorry, my comment apparently came across in a way I did not intend.

  • Michael

Wait, there are air holes, but no way in? That’s some weird magic. Does that mean the air that does get in has 0% humidity? The people would die just from breathing, eventually.

    • David Welbourn

Well, most likely the holes are warded against liquids and solids, so water vapour as a gas might get in where liquid water would not. We don’t know exactly how it works and they’ve only got a few minutes to figure it out.

  • Mann Ramblings

Kyle needs to use everything he learned from Duncan and seduce him into giving up the secrets. Mitch probably shouldn’t watch the fireworks.

    • D. G.

I think he might be in too much pain for seduction to work.

  • Cman65

just make the people smaller than the holes

    • David Welbourn

I think the holes have been enchanted to only allow normal air and light through and nothing else.

  • Fluke is right, go back to punching him. a lot.

  • syllibub

While I trust that Spooky is more powerful and resourceful than Duncan and Sircea realize and is probably capable of figuring out how to get into the box, I think in this case he simply won’t have time to do it. Maybe there’s a way he could break past a 6000-year-old sorceress’ spells in under four minutes that doesn’t completely defy narrative belief, but I can’t think of how it would work. (Then again, my brain is pretty fried; this has been the longest week of my life.)

I’m curious about the “blank slate” thing, too — that seems like it involves more than his mind not being as “porous” as a young person’s. And since it’s been the case this whole time, and not just since the dampener, it suggests that Duncan may have retained some kind of power, just not the strength/reflexes/invulnerability cocktail that would help him out the most right now. Either that, or Sircea has something to do with it, possibly to guard against Laampros (who may be able to read minds as well).

As usual, a beautifully executed and thought-provoking page!

  • Earl Patterson

Kyle Daddy is coming! I wanna see him step though gate!!

  • Derkins

Duncan’s nipple right above the previous button. tee hee

  • camelotcrusade

Oh man, Sircea cheats. Everybody knows the villain is supposed to put the bomb on the outside of the safe. That way, you can disable it the moment before it goes to 3-2-1…click.

  • somebody

uuuuhhhh there’s not much time left!!!
come on guys! you can do it!!!

    hihihihihihihihihihihi nipple hihihihihihihihihihi

  • fujoshifanatic

Hm. So Commander can’t actually read Anni’s mind? Now that’s interesting. Could it be the mark of a true psychopath? Sociopath? Or is he maybe a secret rogue Jedi knight? Such things to think about…

  • Shiny Gwilly

oh dear, that is a problem, but not surprised PP did some magic on the box so it’s hard to open up/stop the timer
there’s a few things they can try, but the problem is they don’t have enough time to experiment and try different things
also um, Kyle, unless you plan to punch Anni some more, you can get off him now
they might be a case indeed where they may have stopped PP and Anni, but they won’t stop the demons from coming

  • Sabrina Vögeli

Somehow I cant take the whole situation for serious as long as Kyle is sitting on Anni. My mind is going completely different ways, Im sorry… xDDD

  • Jason Moon

What’s the deal with Spooky’s right hand in the last panel? The shading or something from the box is shining on/though his arm. Mistake or is he a ghost or something?

As I wait with baited breath as the bomb with the red LED that they ALL seem to have since the Carter administration counts down…

  • TwilightDreamer

Uuumm….Kyle?….I think you can get up now…..
Don’t feel obligated or anything though…. XP

  • Klaus

Why would Duncan know how to stop the death machine? It would be of no advantage the PP or to Duncan.

  • Wyrmidon

I do so like how Kyle refuses to get off Duncan… makes for some very interesting visuals there, despite Anni’s bruised face.

Or maybe I’m just a perv.

  • Pikinanou

Anni trained with Prof. Snape to shield his mind against mindreader XD

    • Klaus

      Or with the Hag.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Saxon and my fellow mod, the Admiral 🙂

  • Saxon_Brenton

Thank you to everybody who gave birthday well wishes yesterday. By way of appreciation, here is another hellsnake fanfic for your entertainment while camping.

Shane And The Hellsnakes – 3rd Bite
(A Young Protectors occult sitcom fanfic. All characters property of AMW Comics.)

PAGE 1 – Some Quiet Time
1.1) Establishing shot of Shane’s living room. Shane and Huey the hellsnake are seated on the sofa. Shane is hunched forward, texting on his mobile phone. Huey is curled up on the sofa beside him, lying on his stomach.
1.2) Same shot composition as before. Shane is still seated on the sofa and hunched forward to use his mobile phone, but now Huey is pushing his head underneath Shane’s hand to demand attention and tummy rubs. Shane is giving Huey an indulgent look.
1.3) Same shot composition as before. Shane is still seated on the sofa and hunched forward, but now is using his mobile phone one handed, while the other hand gives Huey tummy rubs. Huey is in approximately the same place on the sofa, but is now on his back with his eyes closed as he quietly wriggles in pleasure.

PAGE 2 – The Singing Pirates Attack
2.1) Same shot composition as on page 1: Shane and Huey are seated on the sofa. But they are suddenly startled by the overly dramatic arrival of a bunch of extremely Gilbert & Sullivan singing pirates that burst into Shane’s living room.
Some of them have flung open the internal doors to the bedroom and bathroom, and are now standing in dramatic groups with their hands raised as they declaim their enmity in song, while two of them have swung across on ropes that were literally not there a second ago. They all wear overly theatrical pirate costumes with large puffy sleeves.
Pirates (singing): “Oh it is a glorious thing / To serve the Pirate King.”
2.2) Fight scene. Shane has jumped to his feet and is punching a pirate in the face. Huey has flung himself at a pirate, who has his arms raised to ward off Huey’s attack.
Pirates (singing): “To find his foes / And do our part.”
2.3) More fight scene. Shane has grabbed the coffee table and is using it like a club to hit a pirate. Huey has fully entangled a different pirate in his coils and is biting him.
Pirates (singing): “To fight and then / Carve out his heart.”
2.4) Conclusion of fight scene. Shane has grabbed one final pirate any the scruff of the neck and is ramming his head into the wall. Huey has yet another pirate entangled in his coils, and this pirate is bug-eyed and doubled over, with his hand grasping at the bottom of the border of the panel. The singing trails off into strangled noises as the last pirate is knocked out.
Pirates (singing): “This pirate crew / Will do our part… urgle.”

PAGE 3 – And Then The Neighbours Complain
3.1) Much the same shot composition as on page 1: Shane has slumped back onto the sofa and is running one hand over his face. Shane: “Jeez, I hate it when that happens.”
Huey is on the floor, head perked up and looking towards the right side of panel where there is a “Knock Knock” sound effect. From off panel the voice of one of the neighbours: “Hey, you all right in there?”
3.2) Twoshot of Shane and the neighbour. Shane has stood up and gone over to the front door of his apartment and opened it. A female neighbour is standing there, and she says: “I heard a lot of noise and banging.” Shane’s expression looks flustered.
3.3) Wide shot of the living room, with Huey on the sofa in the foreground, and Shane and the neighbour standing at the front door in the background. Shane says: “That was the TV. My pet snake was playing with the volume control, and it got a bit loud. Sorry.”
In the foreground Huey is sitting on the sofa, but has raised himself up to look towards the humans at the door. Huey is looking askance at being blamed for this, with an expression of both surprise and irritation.
3.4) Another wide shot of the living room like previous panel. The neighbour says: “Wait. You let a snake play with the TV remote?” Shane has a dumbfounded expression on his face.
Huey has sunk back onto the sofa with a satisfied expression as he waits to see how Shane will talk himself out of this one.

    • The only answer to this is: Yes, who doesn’t? 😛

      This is awesome, Saxon!!

      • Pietro7

        And hilarious! Thanks!

  • Hello Campers!!

    • davefragments

      Hi AJ,

      • How’s it going, Dave?

        • davefragments

          Well PREACHER ended Sunday.
Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy are now starting their road trip across the USA to find God.

          • My parents are watching the finale as we speak. That sounds rather, er… sitcommy?

          • davefragments

Might sound like that but it is the farthest from a sitcom as anything has ever gotten on TV.

          • Good grief!

          • davefragments

This first year was all the backstory that the graphic novel told as flashbacks. So we find out about Annville the town, Cassidy the vampire, Tulip the overcharged hit women, Quincannon and his Meat and Power Plant, the Cowboy, Arseface, Leblanc and Fiore, a Seraphim, the Cowboy, and as opposed to the book, we see Jesse the Preacher really preach and lead his “flock” … Plus various other folks

          • Cool. So if they renew it, we’ll see all the other shenanigans they get into?

          • davefragments

The graphic novel begins with the end of this season. So next year begins the road trip. That’s almost the first page of the novel.

          • Then it should all start making some damn sense!! 😀

          • davefragments

I can help with that if you are having some confusion about the story. (at least so far)

          • Nah, it’s good. It just started in and never exactly showed a point to the whole thing, I guess until the end.

          • davefragments

TV is not suited to a climactic opening and then long flashbacks. TV is very linear.
These graphic novels or Comic Books as they were called can to non-linear story telling but not many TV shows or movies can do that.

By the way, because of the finale of Preacher, I didn’t watch SHARKNADO 4: OH HELL NO!

Now that was a good thing

          • I haven’t seen Sharknado 1-3, not certain why I would want to watch 4. 🙂

Sharknado 1 was silly fun. Two and three got tedious. The little bit I saw of #4 was repetitive the awful.

  • Oh hey, I have left over chocolate cake, (it’s German Chocolate Cake for those in the US), just gonna leave it over on the table yonder!!

  • *sigh* ..I’m really not good with longer running comics ending (not talking about TYP -yet). I mean, it’s awesome to get the conclussion, but it’s also sad and bittersweet, especially when I’ve been with the comic for a long time/from (almost) the start. Have had two comics I’ve read for years end within a month of each other, and now only posting aftermath info and/or small extras. I feel so empty in my little comic loving heart xD (a little overdramatic but fitting).

I will be a mess the day YP end, not to mention a couple of long running comics where I’ve been along from the start/early on. And one of those I know is closing in on an end. Yup, I’ll be a mess. It already hurts.
This is the hardest part of webcomics. Wanting to get the end story, but wanting more *hugs precious comics*

(Don’t even get me started on long comics that sadly has to be cancelled (and hopefully gets a written sum-up) – or even worse, just gets abandonned. Luckily last is happening less now from what I personally ecperience)

Feel ya. I still cant handle the ending of Boned.

      • That is exactly one of the two comics I refer to 🙂
        (And so agree)

  • Oh no! Patreon is down for maintenance. I just opened to check for new page. Hope that doesn’t mean we have to wait fpr page to be posted here.

    • We’ve become spoiled. 🙁

I’m breaking out the pretzels for the siege

I noticed an art flaw in the final panel, and not sure if it was mentioned or not yet, but Spooky’s right hand is transparent. Can see through it and see the cage. Not sure if this is a layer opacity issue since it is only the right arm and not anything else of his having that issue.

    • Thank you, Andrew. I think maybe the coloring layer for the cage might have gotten placed over the arm. I’ll let Vero know about that. Good catch. 🙂
