The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 25

167 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 25

Hmm. That would indeed be a fluke, would it not?

I’m currently exhibiting at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, WA this weekend, April 7-10. And I have Artifice graphic novels and special advance copies of The Young Protectors Volume One for sale! And, as a special treat, I’ve brought brand new The Young Protectors trading cards, including the 18+ cards, which feature fully nude art of the adult heroes and villains of The Young Protectors! I’m exhibiting at the Northwest Press Booth (Booth 1227) with other cool LGBT creators. If you’re at Emerald City Comic Con, please stop by and say hello!

Meanwhile, The Young Protectors penciler Adam DeKraker will be exhibiting at the Rainbow Book Fair on April 9th (this Saturday!) at John Jay College in New York City. The Rainbow Book Fair is “the largest LGBT book event in the U.S.” and Adam will also have both The Young Protectors and Artifice books. If you’re in the area, it’ll be a great chance to meet him and get him to sign your book!

So! Commander has made a pretty convincing argument—and look at the way Paul’s eyes have lit up! What could possibly happen next?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Well now!

  • davefragments

Think about the one person who can do something to that damn neutralizer!

  • The light bulb has gone off!

    • Saxon_Brenton

The look on his face is adorable.

  • This is true, I highly doubt that the dudes who developed the dampner could ever really work around the power of luck/bad luck/ or whatever Fluke’s power is. How does one take such a power under consideration. It works whenever and however it wants to work.

    • timemonkey

Depends on the limits of the power. Powers run on a spectrum, not everyone gets to be at the top. But past evidence has shown Fluke to be pretty powerful.

      • But we’re talking about the power of luck. Luck isn’t something that can be controlled. It happens. You’re either lucky or unlucky. And wouldn’t just be a whole bunch of lucky to not be affected by the dampner.

        • timemonkey

Depends on how the power works. If you’re lucky because of magic and you’re dealing with something that cancels out magic then it becomes a question of which is stronger. You can be lucky, but not lucky enough. Just like how they lost their fight, Fluke’s powers were working the whole time, didn’t stop Mitch and Spooky from getting hurt badly or stop the Annihalator from turning on the dampner and beating them down.

          • IamM

Or which acted first. Even if the dampener works on him it didn’t necessarily stop Fluke’s power from arranging for the dampener to short out in 3, 2…

          • I believe that Fluke’s powers gets charged with bad luck/bad actions (Kyle being hurt etc) and so good things happen, as those good things happen the charge is depleted and then reverses so then bad things happen (Spooky and Mitch getting hurt and the rest of their defeat), which I believe recharges him for the good.

I just think that luck is kinda subjective. No one knows exactly when it’ll happen or how it’ll manifest or the very strength of it. It could even have a total equal/opposite action component to it. And how could any device really control for that. Because luck is luck.

As for a magical component, if his luck is run by that, well, it’s already been put on this page and the fiasco that was Hong Kong when Duncan threw that magic powder on Kyle that the dampner doesn’t seem to affect magic.

        • IamM

Or to have something break it.

    • Klaus

They can not have worked on individual powers. There are too many. They must have targeted the sources of power. Sircea mentioned mutation, alien DNA, conventional magic and the old rules. According to Sircea no one understands the old rules. Even so, this is the only power source we know for certain that dampener works against. (If you cheated by reading the power cards, you also know that it works against genetic manipulation). I don’t see why it should not work against Fluke, if his power comes from one of the sources it affects. Luck would more likely manifest as the dampener malfunctioning alltogether. But Paul’s source of power is unknown, and so he just may be so lucky that the makers of the dampener missed it.

      • True. Luck (good or bad) is such an unknown quantity. It’s possible the developers never considered something like a probability type power. So a dampner malfunction because of his abilities, or a minion tripping and unplugging the devices holding them captive, or any number of unknown possibilities would be quite the stroke of luck. 😀

      • Saxon_Brenton

[snerk] A few years ago I realised that the scanners and dampeners for superhumans shouldn’t be like the one-size-fits-all that we’ve tended to see in Marvel and DC comics. Instead, it should be more like a real life computer virus detection software. You have to work at keeping them up to date, and always be aware that there will be some new variation that hasn’t been recorded yet that will appear and mess up your day.

Congratulations paranormal physics engineers, here’s Fluke to mess up your day.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Now I want there to be another superpowered individual called “The Contrarian” whose power is that nothing works on them the way it’s supposed to.

          • So basically the only time their powers work is when the dampner is on? 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

I think the power dampener would strengthen their powers to the point where they start levitating and maybe existing in non-Euclidian geometry due to their sudden immunity to the laws of physics.

          • Now that would be interesting. Anytime something tried to drain them, they would grow more powerful. I like that!

          • stickfigurefairytales

But if you used a power booster on them, it would weaken them.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Yup. Called it. Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy style logic. And now Fluke will be run over while walking across a zebra crossing. :-p

  • Paul’s face in that last panel is absolutely amazing. ^_^ Good job Adam and Vero!

  • Nate

    I was pretty close!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, so since we’re talking about how much we don’t know about how Fluke’s luck powers work, I’ll just muddy the waters even more. Have always not been affected by the dampener, or have only just now retroactively been not affected by the dampener?

Also, with a tricky mind like that, Commander would make one help of a RPG munchkin rules-lawyer.

    • Toli Bera

Paradox effect in full display + Deus Ex.

Paradox effect: Because his powers were affected, they were permitted to charge up to where they weren’t affected, the effect of which is basically creating a Yes-Because-No situation. basically Amanda by pointing it out is creating a reality warp for their benefit.

    • Adam Black

I pointed last wednesday this is always the case.

The physical situations when he uses his powers must always precede from their actual use. Its always retro-causality.

  • davefragments

I went into the archives and looked for the page where Duncan activates the neutralizer device. Fluke is the first Protector that he runs to and knocks out. So there was mere seconds between the device’s activation causing powers to stop. Quite possibly, Fluke would never have known that the device doesn’t affect his power.

    • Gregory In Seattle

      (Insert appropriate foreshadowing music here.)

      • davefragments

Low with the bass strings doubled by the timpani and the cellos doubled by the tubas…

        very modern that

  • D. G.

She makes a very good point. Hope it works.

  • PreludeToA

I can’t wait to see how this turns out! Also, where Fluke’s powers come from.

    • Adam Black

Fluke doesnt have powers. For that, he would have to exist.
Spooky, like all magic users, is insane. There are no exceptions.
Fluke is a autonomous hallucinatory projection of Spooky.

You know spooky can conjure whole creature and give them life.
      Pretty … Spooky, huh?

This is why Spooky is in the YP ( fluke ) but isnt a Guardian.
      Hes nutso.

When Fluke and Spooky argue back and forth , you can see clues they are the same person

      • Brian Hopkins

        Whut?

        • It’s Adam-talk 😉

          • Adam Black

You wish you figured it out first.

Its probably in your moderators code not to spoil book 2

        • Adam Black

          It explains everything.
Includinng the very odd scenario that Fluke has never appeared alone.

Commander must know. Its cruel to tell Fluke hes not real.
It might make Spookys insanity worse. Its best to play along.

      • Klaus

Actually it is worse than that. All of the Young Protectors and their whole world is the product of the imagination of one man.

  • Adam Black

Oh No, she just damned Spooky.

  • karmakat

OH MY GOD THAT FACE lol

  • Omg, that last panel LOL… Paul having an epiphany is one of my fave panels of him ever. Sitting here with a big goofy smile when I look at it.

*Paul mindblown* …realizing she could be right.

Also loving Amanda in panel 4. That sly smile while she ask Paul the one question that may be a whole new understanding of his powers. Both how it works in general, but probably also some of Paul’s understanding and experience about it.
It’s a very tricksy ability/power to have. One you can never fully control, but only hope to continue to excel is how to use.

  • Mir

That last panel: “I LEFT THE STOVE ON AT HOME”

I’m ready ohh i’m ready for the next page. Fluke it’s your time to shine!

  • SofiaT

I always wondered how Paul’s power worked -did the strokes of luck happen without him having any control over them or foreseeing them or did he have to think that it would be good luck for specific things to happen… and then they did?

This page makes me thing that it’s the latter and that Commander is being very, very smart in phrasing her theory like that.

    Oh yeah.

    • Gregory In Seattle

I rather think that his is the “power of positive thinking” writ large. Kind of like the placebo effect: if he were told it was just sugar, his self-doubt and second guessing would ruin his gift. But as long as that illusion is not broken, it works amazingly.

      • SofiaT

I believe we’re saying the same thing.

Thinking -positive thinking at that- is most likely required for his powers to work… they don’t just decide to work without him knowing what will -or should– happen next; which could actually end up being pretty dangerous. They work because he wants certain thinks to happen and by wanting them and believing they will, they do.

        • It’s just when the good runs out and bad luck strikes that things go to, um, hell.

          • SofiaT

That’s another thing I wonder about: how does he know how charged he is and how much good luck he has left before he gets depleted and bad luck starts striking again? Can he sense it somehow? And if so, and his powers are actually working now, wouldn’t he have sensed it before Commander told him of her theory?

          • I think he knows how charged he is, but I’m not certain he knows when the tide will change for the worse. When they were battling he started getting a little reckless because things were going so swell for them.

But! I am wondering if because he assumed they were stuck in a loop of bad luck, or that the dampner just cut off ALL their powers his included, he wasn’t paying attention. So I guess this is where the power of positive thinking would come in handy.

  • Klaus

The device does not work on Paul. Unfortunately that stroke of luck used up his great charge, so his power, while not nullifiedm doesn’t actually do anything.

    • Shhh! Positive thoughts. Think positive thoughts 😉

  • Mir

I think it would be interesting to see how Fluke realized his powers. I mean, if I had his powers I think I would just assume I got a lot of karma and some bad luck in my life. Unless an event happened that made it really obvious something wasn’t completely normal about it.

  • Jeldenil

Don’t count your own powers out, Amanda. That’s some serious manipulation of reality you are doing there… 😉

    • Not if she’s actually right. Smart, she is *lol*

      • Jeldenil

She would be right through the power of suggestion. And she is quite good at that. Maybe it’s not a superpower, but it’s still a power to be reckoned with. I understand why PP wanted to kill her, now.

        • I got that all along, as soon as she picked her out. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing 😉

        • Dennis Grace

@Jeldenil, love, if ever you met my wife, you’d know: it’s a super power. It’s definitely a super power.

    • Klaus

Good, oldfashioned brainpower will beat those fancy superpowers any day.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Sircea was definitely on to something when she called Amanda the most dangerous member of TYP.

  • Hours Left

Perception is power in the world of TYP.

  • bronakopdin

HAHAHA Paul’s expression in the last panel is just priceless x’DD
I love it!!! Great work 😀
now the question is what exactly Paul can do and whether there’ll be a nice situation soon to not be spotted immediately by anyone while doing it. Though creating that situation should also fall in the range of his powers I guess ^^

  • Shiny Gwilly

    AAAAA THAT FACE IS PERFECT
this whole page is great, commander is the best
WE BELIEVE IN YOU SOME MORE PAUL, LET’S DO THIS

  • TwilightDreamer

    OOOOOOOOHHHH!!! ;D
    let’s see it happen…let’s see it happen!!!! 😀 😀 😀

  • Kate G

Fluke looks like he just saw his favorite sweet in the candy store (which he hasn’t seen in months) in that last panel. It’s like, “OH MY GOD! CAN I HAS IT?! CAN I?!”

Yes, Fluke, you may totally have that candy. You may have it after you get everyone out of the power dampener. Ready? Ready? GET EVERYONE OUT! *throws all of the candy*

  • amusingmurff

    Dude ex machina.

  • Dennis Grace

So, instead of “Up, up, and away!” or “Deus Volt!” a more Fluke-appropriate war cry would be, “Duuuuuude.” Or perhaps “Keanu Volt!”

  • Dennis Grace

In any case, I hope they do something soon. Even my arms are falling asleep.

  • Toli Bera

I can just hear the trumpets blaring. “De-de-de dah-dah-dee de da-de-dee-deeee” (if anyone can find that triumph music playing that’d be great.)

  • Pikinanou

    Now, be amazing!

  • David Welbourn

Goodness, Fluke, you’re making O face. That’s adorable.

Commander’s logical strike was a lot simpler and straightforward than I was expecting, which I hope means it’s far more likely to work. Part of my thinking with Fluke’s powers is that they could be partly or fully magical in nature, and if that’s so, the power nullifier wouldn’t affect him for that reason alone.

But another part of my thinking with Fluke’s powers is that maybe they’re not bound by the normal progression of time. Like, Fluke’s powers were definitely working before the nullifier was switched on and they could have anticipated this then-future bad luck of powerlessness. They might have acted *then* in such a way to have a payoff effect *now*.

    • Samurai Jack

It seems Fluke only has to believe…

Then again, Gordon did say earlier that it’s odd how Fluke’s luck always seems to correspond with what he wants to happen. No doubt Amanda noticed.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I love this page so much!

  • fujoshifanatic

If that’s how Fluke’s powers indeed work, Anni will have his ass handed to him in 3, 2, 1…

  • Chris Dangerfield

I love this page as much as @stickfigurefairytales:disqus and that last panel is the best Fluke “gobsmacked” expression EVAH! Such fun you guys. Thank you so much.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      So great. <3

  • Chris Dangerfield

Oh, and Amanda is one of those scary smart girls. I think whoever made her “The Commander” had a very good idea! 😀

  • Richard Grant Muir

Excited to see how this pans out! 🙂

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

For some reason I can’t remember what Fluke’s “superpower” was……so I guess I’ll just wait and see how this pans out!

    • It’s a good luck/bad luck thing. If he’s been hurt and/or had some bad luck, he’ll have a streak of really good luck. Like the very first scene in chapter 1, where Paul had just crashed his car prior to the fire, and two firefighters next to him miraculess avoid getting hit by a falling debree.

  • Chris Dangerfield

*chris gets Paul to roll his dice*
“Come on baby I’m feeling LUCKY!” 😀

  • Jason Moon

Is he a relative of Teela Brown? Or the Lucky Duck from Callahan’s?

  • xLizardx

And Spooky… If Spooky’s hands are glowing, and he’s healing himself, then presumably the device cannot work on him either 🙂 Or maybe it was designed with an exemption for magic users, with PP in mind.

    • Klaus

It was not made by PP’s people, so it would take some manipulation to get the makers to leave magic out on purpose. Duncan and PP are great at manipulation, so let’s not rule it out. But it is more likely that magic is simply so different from the other power sources that it would be too much work to include.

  • Andy Diehl

That’s meta. His power includes resistance to power dampening.

Also, thinking about how the dampener didn’t make the fire-snakes go away, I remembered that Duncan was still able to turn Kyle invisible after the first dampener activated. So it’s well established that it can’t stop a magic potion from working.

  • Librarican

Next scene: The sparkly yellow magic bonds breaking around Fluke. Fluke plummets to the ground and lands on the machine, therefore sending everyone else into a dog pile on top of him. Mitch, who’s been feigning injury this whole time, springs up, and grabs the injured Spooky. Spooky has enough magic left to tether the container of hostages to him, and the pair whisk away, dragging the box behind them and leaving the rest of the group to take on the dynamic duo.

    • Klaus

If that box is just standing on the ground, Mitch need only touch it to make it fly with him.

      • Librarican

Does the box have a bottom that the people are sitting on? I don’t remember and am too tired at the moment to look that up…

        • Klaus
          • Librarican

Ah HA! It does have a bottom! Thank you. And yeah, I forgot about the whole flying car thing, so that would make sense. It would make more sense then that Spooky could serve as magical cover.

  • SugarPlumFairy

Heya, I don’t know if this is the best place to ask but not sure how else to contact. I’ve seen the updates for people who ordered print rewards from the kickstarter being sent out soon-ish, but haven’t seen anything about people who only pledged for digital rewards.

Are they all being sent out at the same time? I filled in the survey and confirmation stuff when it when round to confirm only digital stuff but that was the last I heard of it.

    • Howdy SPF,

The best place to ask me about Kickstarter stuff would usually be on Kickstarter, either by PM or in the project comment section, but I’m happy to answer here as best I can. 🙂

I’m a little confused by the question, though. Digital rewards have been sent out continuously to those who pledged through Kickstarter Updates—almost all the digital rewards that have been created have been sent out over the previous several months. The BackerKit survey was only sent out to digital-only pledgers to give y’all a chance to take advantage of add-ons, if you wanted. But in terms of digital rewards, all backers have had access to those through the Updates for some time. (And will continue to be sent more as the last few are completed.)

You can view previous Kickstarter Updates here, which will allow you to re-download the rewards:

      https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alexwoolfson/the-young-protectors-vol-1-0/posts

It’s also my plan to eventually have a master Update post where I link to all of the digital rewards in one place once the project is near completion. Those links will only be up for a limited period of time, so please make sure your address on Kickstarter is current, so you won’t miss that Update.

Anyway, I hope that helps. If you have more questions, please let me know. And thank you very much for your backing! 🙂

  • kamishiro

I love how Amanda is so smart and Paul face when he gets happy it’s so cutee :33

  • Pietro7

I wanna see Ani heave that circle of bone upright, only to have Paul’s power break it in such a way that a piece lands exactly on the power dampener and smashes the machine to flinders. Pretty please with sugar on it?

  • Jasmine

That panel of Paul’s face is the best comic panel I have ever seen.

  • Klaus

We have two superhero tropes clashing here. One is the dastardly deed that must at all costs be stopped, because it would lead to an unavoidable disaster. Openening the gate to let the demon army into the world is a typical example. Others would be the villain completing and activating his global mind control device, or releasing the invincible monster. In these cases, what happens is that the heroes fail, the deed is done, and the heroes must find some way to prevent the disastrous consequences. Which they do.

The other is innocent people in danger. In these cases the people will be saved.

So what is going to happen here? Predicting his hard, predicting the future especially so, but I will risk it: the YP will save the victims, but the gate will open anyway.

    • Derkins

s’what I’ve been thinking this whole time too. risky move. riskyyy

  • MoonByte

    Paul: …………………..DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE

  • YES! ooooooooooooo so ready for the next few pages… supercharged fluke!!! YAY 🙂

  • Mary Klemzak

    Holy crap shes right!

    And Paul is so adorable!!!

Doooo iiiiitttttt! Use your… Flukiness? Is that a thing? In this comic it is.

Well, get on it. Chop chop!

    • Klaus

      Flukosity? Flukability?

  • Name

I can’t wait for them to get free and kick that lap dog’s ass!

  • Derkins

Heee!! That look on his face in the last panel!! I did a mad giggle because Amanda is a mad GENIUS!! (so good)

  • Airboy Obsessed

THAT LOOK ON HIS FACE IN THE LAST PANEL IS SO FREAKING CUTE.

  • D. G.

What if the dampener runs on batteries and they burn fast? Or malfunction somehow?

  • Klaus

Luk munden og se begavet ud.

  • Earl Patterson

did she say 60 sec? it’s been 3 day now

  • Justin White

    ‘O’ She’s a genus

  • davefragments

It was “sign the tax forms” day. I am now officially poor again. . . But, I am so behind in everything. I’ll try make it online before 11pm…

  • stickfigurefairytales

Ugh…I need to turn in early tonight, but I reeeeeeeeeeeally want to see this next page!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Okay, I’m going to bed. I don’t want to relapse into my cold getting worse.

      • Aww. Get lots of rest, Sticky!!

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Thank you, AJ! 😀

      • Hope for a speedy recovery. Sleep well.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Thanks very much, Danish! I’m already feeling better.

      • Feel better soon stick sweet!

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Thank you, Doki! <3

      • Mir

        Get well soon!

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Thank you! 🙂

  • I expect things to just start breaking next page. Just a whole bunch of clanging and crashing. Minions tripping over themselves and wires.

I’m hoping for a Rube Goldberg-esque chain of events with thing A causing thing B, which causes thing C, and so on.

      • Now that would be AWESOME!!

      • I’m trying to figure out what Thing A is that starts Thing B etc.

  • davefragments

    I made it.

  • Hi fellow campers 🙂

    • Good morning!!

      • Birds are singing, but that one flye that made it in through the open window is cirkling me so loudly that it’s har do hear LOL

        *Gives flye the mean look*

I had two squirrels doing the “springtime frolics” outside my bedroom window this morning.

        • Freaking flies.

    • Morning Danish.

    • davefragments

      hi there.

    • syllibub

      Hey, Danish!

  • davefragments

Am I the only person having trouble getting into Patreon?

    • No, I’m unable to get on either.

      • davefragments

        thanks

        • Keeps saying I tried too many times? I mean I was already signed in and then I wasn’t. Grr.

          • davefragments

I just tried a few seconds ago and it won’t log in through Facebook. I’ll try again in a bout 15 or 20 minutes.

          • Yeah I tried going in with FB too, no go.

          • I just logged in. I closed the tab, opened a new and could log on.

          • Yeah it finally let me back in.

          • davefragments

            Same here.

          • Let’s hope it won’t create trouble for Alex to post on there, and the glitch is short.

  • WTF? (Rest is edited out)

    • Ahh, a Patreon issue this time from others reaction. Good to know 🙂

      • syllibub

Still, how annoying! I hope they can resolve the issue soon.

      • Yup Patreon’s been taken over by Gremlins

    • davefragments

I couldn’t log in a few minutes ago.

I was poking through old speculative notes of mine and I came across a half-baked Spooky theory regarding the demon boy (I can’t remember his name though, argh) — sort of a spin on a bodysharing thing, where instead of intermittently taking control of Spooky’s body, the demon boy takes up space in Spooky’s mind, and the reason Spooky doesn’t have any memories of his life before hell is because that “real estate” has been given over to his demon buddy. Occasionally, depending on Spooky’s mental state, the demon can manifest enough that Amanda or other psychics would be able to perceive him.

It sort of fits with the prose story we got about Spooky and Amanda where the demon boy made an appearance, and it could explain why Spooky is able to use magic without forfeiting his sanity — since part of him is inhuman, the “true understanding” doesn’t drive him insane.

Anyway, it’s not really relevant right now, but it was fun to rediscover! 2014 me had Thoughts.

*put on pot of coffee to attract little Admiral and her crew*
    Morning everyone [^.^]~~

    • davefragments

      hi there.

      • Sapfo

        coffee?

        • davefragments

          Tea is my poison.

          • Sapfo

*put on a pot of tea for people who need their kind of poison* 🙂

          • davefragments

I have a bottle of Maxwell House instant decaf because that’s what the friends I have like when they make it themselves. I teased them about getting packets of Sank Instant Decaf. However, that would be constitutionally cruel and unusual punishment.

          • davefragments

added: I forbid them from using real coffee because they didn’t empty the grounds one time and by the time I realized it, I had a science experiment.

    • Good morning! Have you ever sprinkled cinnamon on top of your coffee

      • Sapfo

I have not, but I can get you some.

        • It adds a nice flavor. Some put a little on the grounds before brewing too.

          • Sapfo

But I like my coffee tasting like coffee. o.O

          • It still does, just a bit of cinnamon.

    • Morning.. though not attracted to the coffee 😉

  • davefragments

Put down the drinks because …
oh you’re going to love it.
    absolutely love it..
    scream with joy …
