Okay…

I’m going to be exhibiting at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, WA this weekend, April 7-10. And I’m going to have Artifice graphic novels and special advance copies of The Young Protectors Volume One for sale! And, as a special treat, I’ll be bringing brand new The Young Protectors trading cards, including the 18+ cards, which feature fully nude art of the adult heroes and villains of The Young Protectors! I’m going to be exhibiting at the Northwest Press Booth (Booth 1227). If you’re going to be at Emerald City Comic Con, please stop by and say hello!

Meanwhile, The Young Protectors penciler Adam DeKraker will be exhibiting at the Rainbow Book Fair on April 9th at John Jay College in New York City. The Rainbow Book Fair is “the largest LGBT book event in the U.S..” Adam will also have both The Young Protectors and Artifice books. If you’re in the area, it’ll be a great chance to meet him and get him to sign your book! 🙂

So! Fluke is the lynchpin in Commander’s escape plan. What is he supposed to do? And is Commander really justified in her confidence that this is actually going to work?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Go paul

    • stickfigurefairytales

I think this one’s yours, Danish. Congratulations!

      • Thank you 🙂 One V closer to passing my next goal.

  • You can do it Fluke!

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Go Paul, go!!

  • davefragments

This is going to be an interesting plan…

  • You just need to stop talking. Ha! That’s not going to be easy. 😛

  • I wonder if the dampner could really stop someone with luck powers.

  • The dampener isn’t controling their ‘normal’ minds, strength and speech. Can Amanda make Paul THINK he’s now in so much bad luck with this situation that his weird ‘Fluke-y’ side will step in and give them some seriously good luck?

Can it work like that and beat the dampener, just as magic seems to have a way around it? I’m SO wanting next page now, to know what she’s about to say.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Well, technically being held captive by supervillains along with the rest of your team, at least two of whom are seriously injured, while time ticks away until a demonic invasion is loosed upon the entire world really is very bad luck.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Like, practically the worst.

      • Fluke: ‘when you put it like that…’

    • syllibub

I bet you’re right. Spooky said that controlling an idea with one’s mind is the foundation of all magic — if Paul’s power is related to the use of magic in the sense that he’s tapping into a force that already exists in the universe and manipulating it, how he approaches the situation mentally could make all the difference.

      • His powers really fit his callname, such a fluke. Having powers based on a force like karma.

It’s a bit unfair for him, but I get why Paul was rejected from the hero programme. Think of how much bad luck would follow him around in major ways if he did hero deeds on a large scale. His team mates would be such at risk – which is a huge kudos to Amanda for working with and around this with Paul.

        • Adam Black

Worse because, he has incentives for bad luck to happen to his friends. It charges him up the most.

He could even be the reason they are captured , now.

          • And next the reason they get free.

But your first sentese proved my point of why the ‘grown up’ hero teams disn’t want him.

          • Adam Black

maybe they didnt have a choice. and his powers mandated it

  • Saxon_Brenton

Is Commander going to use the type of ‘logic’ that Douglas Adams wrote about in Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy to prove that Fluke’s powers are still working? Better be careful with that, because that’s how you end up being run over while walking across zebra crossings.

    • joshsusser

“At some point in the future, it will be very lucky for you that the dampener failed right about now…”

  • syllibub

I don’t know what she has in mind, but I already love it. I also love the lowercase lettering in Paul’s speech balloon.

  • Kensworth Ebbinghause

When trying to bend the spoon, the trick Is to realize that there is no spoon at all!

  • D. G.

And I’d bet Paul iz all ears now. I had a feeling the solution involved him.

  • syllibub

“Nice dampener you’ve got there. It would be a shame if it…malfunctioned!”

I bet they make it out of their restraints — one way I could see it going wrong, though, is if Sircea is keeping tabs on them mentally and interferes, since she didn’t seem convinced that the device has rendered them utterly harmless. Still, I’d imagine there’s enough occupying her attention right now that she might not be bothering.

  • Still waiting for Cory to pop up, I am sure Mitch had him stow away on the jet, Just in Case.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m guessing Mitch wanted to try and keep him out of any further trouble for the time being, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play a significant role in subsequent events. And we know there’s another full chapter left after this one.

  • davefragments

    I’m thinking of a luck reversal —
Who’s been luckiest tonight? I’d pick either Sircea, the Platinum Princess. She’s lucked out with fooling Duncan and she’s lucked out with him being able to activate the dampener knock out TYP’s. She only knocked Mitch out of the air.
So if a reversal of luck is in store, then I think she is the candidate for things going wrong.

    • Michael

The luckiest thing would be ExSec coming in, followed by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, who have successfully dealt with the space thing.

But I don’t think Paul’s been quite unlucky enough for that to happen.

      • davefragments

I don’t think that’s going to happen in the next few minutes.

I agree, if EcSec’s arrival will be great. However, I think ExSec is going to pop up just after Laampros arrives.

      • Adam Black

hes imprisoned, and at ground zero at a demon invasion.

        Kinda unlucky

    • Adam Black

I think Duncans been the luckiest.

      • davefragments

The reason I said Sircea is the luckiest is that she still has Duncan on her side. Now he might have doubts but he not working against her or stopping and doing nothing. His bad luck is losing Kyle and not having much say with Sircea. She does her best to throw crap on him when he expresses some minor change.
Sircea is walking with her “airs” held high and mighty. She’s the 6000 year old witch and she know so much more than anyone else. That’s pride and as the old Proverb states: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

But Look how lucky Duncan was.
he was captured, but got out a star in the last moment which went below Spookys freeze field, and got him in the thigh.

This weakened spooky just enough he couldnt do 2 things at once.

          • Klaus

Sircea is walking with her “airs” held high and mighty. She’s the 6000 year old witch and she know so much more than anyone else. That’s pride and as the old Proverb states: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

  • I hope Fluke is able to send his next wave of super bad luck in Team Silver and Laampros’ direction, so hard it ends a place where the sun don’t shine xD

If he’ll be able to control it in any way. You can’t control karma, but maybe he can give it a nudge in a certain direction when it has him ‘locked and loaded’.

  • SleepingDragon

I did say in the comment thread of some earlier page that Fluke’s power was one of the weird ones if you try to really think about it. I wonder what our dear Commander is doing to reveal here, she probably has access to a lot of data on the guys and how their abilities actually work.

  • Shiny Gwilly

well then, commander seems very confident this is all going to work out, and i hope it does
it’s ok fluke, we believe in you!

  • SofiaT

“Less than 60 seconds” maybe? 🙂

  • Toli Bera

So he shakes his helmet off it falls damages his dampener, as per my plan last page, since they can clearly move their heads in all this. which frees Fluke who frees the team in Commander’s place. hand to hand butt-whooping commences. spooky dragon-vials the dampener. gate is ruined. then have the team go back to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, wait for all this to blow over.

  • Adam Black

    My predictions are getting better.
    I called this last page.

I predicted Panel 2 script almost word for word

  • Dumb Clicker

I know a lot of people have talked about how the characterization Commander is refreshing in contrast to other female superheroes, but I also really appreciate how she’s different than a lot of other leader type characters in super hero comics. I feel like most strategy oriented/disciplined characters are portrayed as cold, secretive, untrusting, cynical, or even outright manipulative (Batman, Prof X, etc.) whereas even though Amanda is very focussed on her goals she’s still very upfront, warm, and honest with her teammates. Even though she’s very clearly in charge, she doesn’t remove herself from the rest of the YP and feels more like a peer than a distant authority figure, and I think the team benefits from that.

    • Nice observation, DC. And well put. 🙂

    • She reminds me of Captain America when he is written at his best. Both have a military background. Both are accustomed to having their teams look to them for inspiration if not leadership. Both are very deeply invested in the welfare of their teams not only on a professional level, but in private, personal lives. Both are very approachable figures. I appreciate how these qualities are attributed to a woman. About. Bloody. Time!

    • Columbine

Good leaders are pretty hard to write.

  • Adam Black

    My next prediction.

Commander is going to use Bill-and-ted logic to get them out.

He may be under the dampener now, but he wasnt before.
Flukes powers are a sort of reality-warper. They sidestep causuality. The events Fluke causes are in a sense, already to setup to happen like a Rube-goldberg device.

She had to shut him up now before he talked himself , from allowing this to have already occurred.

2nd Possibility: She convinces Fluke this whole scenario was GOOD LUCK to Fluke because he wanted to fight. Tsunami even suggested this.
( this might have been her backup plan , and it was a actually a subliminal suggestion )

Maybe he can ‘sacrifice’ this good luck and thus be free.

  • TwilightDreamer

*wasn’t even talking but shuts up and sits at attention anyway…*
    XP lol

  • That last ‘okay’ from Paul. I can hear it in my head. That questioning tone when you really wonder what will be said/done next. That Okay pretty much sums up the respons from most of us 🙂

    • Klaus

      Okay.

  • Sapfo

Three amazing ways Fluke saves the day, and one strange one…..

    1. Water! In a fluke Paule is able to gain access to Tsunami power. Making the river rais again. Crashing over The Annihilators, Platinum Priestess and pile of bones before they know what is going on. And at the same time breaking them all free. And saves the day! The end!

    2. Fire! What we dont know is that Duncan have a lighter in his belt. With Flukes power he makes this lighter explore in such a manner that his clothes, well…. they goes bye bye and naked Duncan have to run away to find something to put on (can not fight naked?). In the meanwhile the adults comes and saves the day. The end!

    3. Air! Fluke is able to use the unconscious Mitch powers and uses the flying car (that is just standing around somewhere), and crashes this into the circle of doom! Which falls down landing on, and destroys all the importent things that Duncan and Sircea need to make the ritual. And Saves the day! The end!

    4. and earth….. Fluke is able to convinces earthworms in the ground to start moving in a fast motion under Sircea, Duncan, the minions, the goats. This motion makes the earth under them weak to the point of creating a sinkhole…. which they all sink into….Trapping them all?…..
YES! This is what is going to happen!

So Mr. teacher Alex! How did I do? Do I get any points for my answers on your quiz

    • That #3. They do have a plane standing just around the corner 😉

…but uhm, Alex, can we have #2 happen? At least the naked part. Duncan has such a nice set of buns.

      • Sapfo

But I want to use the car! The car is cool! =D

        • But Paul already broke one car. He should be allowed to keep the next a little longer.

        • Adam Black

You get earthworm powers instead. use them wisely

    • Klaus

Only Paul’s powers are neutralized. It must be somehing else.

      • Sapfo

        Maybe I get a D- for effort then 😉

        • Klaus

          Then again, maybe not.

    • Will Parkinson

By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!

      • LimpBiskit

        But where’s the little monkey?

  • Jeldenil

    Paul, you are Houdini’s incarnation.

  • bronakopdin

talking about authority, Amanda is amazing 🙂
I’m really curious about her plan! I’ve read people’s predictions below and somehow can’t come up with my own this time x’D
    Too tired from uni restarting…

  • Chris Dangerfield

What a great page. I’m ready for the next one NOW! 😀

Amanda and Paul’s expressions in the last two panels are pure gold. Standing ovation to all of you for such subtle nuanced fun. They manage to package tension, excitement, anticipation and a sense of stuff hitting the fan fun, together with a droll sort of wry humor all into two frames.

I’m sure, with some further obsessing, I’ll have to write more, but it’s pure A+++ happening here. Again just what I needed to make this week so much better. This graphic novel just get’s better and better. Thanks so much!

  • Klaus

    Commander commanding.

  • Mary Klemzak

Paul looks unconvinced, but she’s Commander. And options are limited

  • Nate

Let me think…. Paul’s powers are tied to his luck, but aren’t they also tied to his confidence?

If so, then perhaps his powers are only blocked because he THINKS they are.

  • T Dibbler

Hmmm…. looks like maybe the people speculating about Fluke’s powers not being stopped by the dampener might turn out to be right. I’m looking forward to finding out. 🙂

  • SchalaRenee

Fluke’s had the worst streak of bad luck EVER just now. His powers should be at their strongest ever right now. He just thinks they’re being blocked. I don’t think even a power dampener can effect random chance like luck.

    • phillip Hooper

      “backlash” in the positive?

      • Yes. Fluke’s powers is a karma thing. Good luck/bad luck. It’s what makes them such a risk sometimes.. a fluke.

When he’s had a lot of bad luck, he charges up in good luck and vice versa.

  • Pikinanou

The power is within you, Paul. All you have to do is to… believe!

    • Klaus

      Use the Force Fluke.

  • Name

Can’t wait to see where it goes from here, thanks for the update!

  • fujoshifanatic

Come on, Amanda, work your mental mojo on Paul so he can reverse-luck you all loose! Is it Saturday yet! *bites nails*

  • Klaus

60 seconds. How many pages is that?

    • Chris Dangerfield

      HA! Too many! LOL.

  • Justin White

    Okey

  • Connor

Ah, she’s going to use Fluke. After reading the last page I was expecting her to be like, “Of course I have a way out. All Exsec technology share an emergency override code.”

So, I’ve finally gotten my new computer working, but I’ve lost all my bookmarks. Does anybody happen to know where the magic bookmarkable link to the latest page is? If not, I can just go through the archive to find where it. I seem to remember it came about during ToD.

    • http://webcomics .yaoi911.com/?last_ webcomic= webcomic2

      but without the spaces

    • Kate G

I was waiting for, “Press the red button.” After all, don’t most dangerous things have a red button you’re not supposed to press?

    • Doki gave it to you, but it can also be found in the FAQ, under Comic Navigation, in case anyone want’s to use it and is unsure how to save it.

  • KingOfNymphs

    Omg, Paul’s lips…yes, please

  • Kate G

*uses mighty narrator megaphone* Use the Force, Fluke. The Force is strong with you. UNLEASH THE MIGHTY FORCE!!!!!! UNLEASH ITS POWER!!!! USE THE FORCE!!!

In other news, guess who gets their Sleep Number mattress delivered later today? YAY! Hopefully I won’t wake up cranky now.

Oh, and and I cantered around the arena one whole time all by myself! With Scooby of course. And then, and then….I lost it. U.U I lost my cantering mojo. And my stirrups. *sniffs* I swear Scoobs laughed at me every time I lost my stirrups which WAS A LOT. I’m back to peacock stirrups. >.< PEACOCK STIRRUPS. I was doing so well that I had regular ol' fillis stirrups and now I'm back to peacock stirrups. *cries* The joys of riding horses.

    • Congrats on the cantering! Be free, grasshopper, be free! 😀

A couple of thoughts. It’s possible you’re dropping your hips instead of keeping them under you. This may not apply and I have no idea how to explain what this is other than it feels like your leg is dangling free or feels open where your leg and hip connect. Also, I do believe there are stirrup pads that are angled to help you keep your heals down. But cantering takes practice. They also have stirrups that the foot pads are wider. I loved those, just a little extra width for your foot.

Have they had you drop your stirrups on purpose yet? Because that is evil, but eventually it can be done, at least at the canter. Sucks for posting.

      • Kate G

You mean have they made me go without the stirrups? Nope. I tried that earlier and my balance isn’t that great at the canter. LOL. I can trot just fine without stirrups and bareback (on a pony anyway. Haven’t tried Scoobs) but cantering? No. They’re still trying to get me to keep my butt on the saddle. Still learning the “keep butt to saddle; squeeze legs around corners,” thing.

It took me three months to get posting while trotting thing down and diagonals. I’m on four weeks with cantering. After I figure something out, I’m a rather fast learner. It’s the figuring out bit that can frustrate me.

I also play games while at my lesson if I have Catherine. I sometimes do a barrel racing pattern like last week, serpentines, some other patterns or this week I did a bit of reining. I had to pick up a ring from one cone, trot (and rein at the same time) around another cone and drop it on a stick on the cone on the other side (it looked like a triangle.) Let’s just say I’m not a reiner. At least, not right now. Turning him was…interesting. My left thigh is still protesting.

I don’t own Scooby or his tack as my lessons are through a non-for-profit that uses rescued and donated horses to help improve lives of children and adults with disabilities. I do individual rider lessons as opposed to hippotherapy or speech therapy. I’m not allowed to cheat (although, a wider base sounds lovely.)

  • Can I just say, because I don’t think it’s being said enough, how awesome Vero is at coloring Fluke’s glas cover. I think that every time we get a scene with Paul up and close.

The slight difference in color shade it adds to Fluke’s face, and her ability to add light reflections, I love it. It works and make it look more ‘real’ 🙂

  • MoonByte

His expression is almost like “Think? Captain, we talked about that…”

  • Librarican

I’ve always been intrigued by Fluke’s powers, simply because we don’t have any information on how luck is defined in connection with his powers. Like, not studying for a test and failing it: is that really bad luck or just poor decision making that yielded the expected results? Or maybe you’re really good at a subject and you don’t study because you’re confident that you understand the material. Is that good luck or just achieving the expected outcome?

Excuse the free-association, talking it out part to come:
I just realized for both situations I included the word expected. A few people have said that Fluke’s luck powers may be tied to how he interprets a situation, and that may be the case. Luck is typically defined in terms of chance. Maybe Fluke has to “take more chances” in order to garner more luck? Could his powers be tied to actions being taken when the outcome is uncertain?

In this case, the whole team’s outcome is definitely uncertain: They could become part of the sacrifice, they could escape, they could be saved, the goats could mosey over and start eating their uniforms, etc. I wonder if this all boils down to probabilities. The more different outcomes that could result, the lower probability of any one in particular happening. Or, if something happened that has a much lower probability of happening (slipping on a banana peel – or finding a pearl – when in the middle of a desert), then that’s considered luck because the “chance” of that happening is “1 in a million”. So if Fluke puts himself in a position that could trigger an unlikely event, does his power then kick in and dictate what shape that unlikely event takes, based on karma and how lucky/unlucky immediately past events played out?

If that’s the case, does it only consider the last “x” number of most recent events, which would account for his ever changing luck as it self-modulates? Like the last 10 or 20 lucky/unlucky things? Is it over the last so many days, so he could “lay low” and not take any chances, therefore avoid the repercussions of a streak of luck to come, good or bad?

    • TheManBehindTheCurtain

I think it a case of Fluke being a jinx. A jinx is someone who causes all probabilities to converge, making what would normally be unlikely things to have just as much of a chance as happening as likely things.

Hence in a orderly environment (say a robotic assembly line) he could case massive damage by making “accidents” happen as often as things working correctly. In a chaotic battlefield, he would be able to make good things more likely to happen for his side (as we noticed when the fighting was going on).

The real question is how well he can control the good and bad. It may not be necessary for him to have bad luck as opposed to just causing it to anyone around him. It was mentioned quite a while back that the major EX teams won’t have him for fear of just that happening. One would think that they would base such fears on good reason or insight into his powers that he doesn’t have/know yet.

In fact, he may be sub-consciously cause himself only bad luck out of a desire not to hurt others or fear of being rejected and alone since no one would want to be around him and have bad things happen to them.

Potentially this balancing of good and bad events doesn’t even need to happen, he could just cause things to happen regardless of a balance by mentally manipulating odds directly and intentionally (like way back when he made that piece of falling building split apart when it hit the street light instead of hitting some firefighters). If he was not a nice person he would make for a very dangerous enemy since he could make only good things happen for himself and bad for everyone else.

  • Chris Dangerfield

    Now Fluke!?

You’ve been very unlucky young man. It’s time to let all that luck out and have something VERY HEAVY fall and squash that alien tech thingy…

Don’t worry, I’m sure the Commander will explain everything thoroughly.

    Yours truly,
    Christopher D

  • stickfigurefairytales

Hi everybody! I’ve got another cold, so I don’t know if I’ll make it until the new page is up, but I’m camping for the time being.

    • *brings Sticky chicken soup* That sucks, hope it doesn’t last long.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Thanks. Admiral! My dad keeps getting colds because he’s spending so much time working and being stressed, and then he gives them to me and my mom. Not a fun time for anyone.

        • It seems we all need time on vacation.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Agreed!

          • At this point I wouldn’t care where. Just a few days to enjoy different scenery.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That sounds nice. Although we’re supposed to get 4-6 inches of snow tonight so it might be hard to get out.

          • Spring is such a shit. It can never make up it’s mind what it wants to do. We were in the 80’s and then bam, cold and some rain.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            I know, right??

          • Granted I don’t mind some reprieve from the ever increasing temp, but just wow. Well, the plants are happy.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Not ours so much. The ice/snow we got earlier this week completely destroyed all of the magnolia blossoms. 🙁

          • That’s a bummer. 🙁

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yeah…

          • Hopefully the frost and stuff stays away here. We just planted some irises and some columbine.

My place is supposed to get an inch of snow tonight.
Wednesday, I was out in short sleeves.

          • We have the chance of rain all weekend and most of next week before it thinks of going back up to 80.

            I wish

          • The rain is good. Means I don’t have to water the plants much. Though I mostly collect cooking water lately to do the watering with.

Snow isn’t. I’m glad I have nowhere to travel tomorrow.

It’s Friday. I’m warm and in bed, and a new page is coming tonight.
That wipes out a busy week.

    • I’m sitting down and eating a hot tasty soup and ignoring the gloomy weather.

The stage play at the Pittsburgh Public Theater was “Disgraced” and it was yesterday. It rained on me. I jaywalk the city streets in the rain.

        • So was the play any good?

          • davefragments

Very good. Quite a stark and harsh drama.
Wikipedia describes it better than I can:
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgraced

          • My parents are streaming the 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out A Window and Disappeared. Or something like that. It’s a Swedish film. They seem to be laughing.

          • davefragments

I’m taking a night free of movies and watching repeats of Antiques Roadshow.

          • No movie for me either. Just have my headphones on listening to some tunes.

    • Doki just finished cleaning up (not out) her grandmother’s room. Started yesterday but the vacuum needed a new bag. Had to walk over to Mother’s to get a new bag after 4:30 to not wake her up too early today. had to move most of the furniture to vacuum under them, but the bed didn’t have wheels and couldn’t move it all the way I wanted to vacuum real good.

There is/are also hole(s) in our roof probably due to all the wind blowing off shingles.

      • davefragments

You need to fix those holes.

        • It is on the “to do” list. Just noticed the problem about an hour ago.

          • davefragments

I have a list of those “to do” things.
