The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 4—Page 19

Well… at least he called Kyle’s heart “beautiful”…

Last week, I let March’s Patreon backers know that they were getting something a little different at the end of the month — a sexy, nude romantic pin-up of Commander, the Young Protectors’ team leader. But that’s not all they’re getting!

This week I sent them a pin-up showing Spooky’s very first kiss! Here’s a sneak preview of that:

AMW_Comics_TYP-ETE-1stTime-Card-SPOOKY_400px

Hmm. I wonder what the story here is…

Patrons get to download the full wallpaper of that image—and because Patreon is changing the way pledges are charged, new Patrons (and upgraders) will get to download that full wallpaper immediately!

How are things changing with Patreon? Well, in the past, if you signed up as a new Patron (or upgraded your pledge), you got to access to all the Updates/rewards of that pledge level, but your card wouldn’t be charged until the end of the month. That lead to some folks gaming the system (pledging high amounts with fake credit cards to try to get the rewards/Milestone Goals without paying), which meant that creators like me had to withhold the good stuff, and then only send those digital files out by personal message to pledgers that Patreon confirmed had successful payments. It was a slow and somewhat laborious process.

Well, no more! Now, when new folks pledge to my Patreon (or current Patrons upgrade their pledge to get access to a particular reward), their cards will be charged immediately—and so that means I don’t have to wait to post the good stuff. (After that immediate payment, Patrons then get charged on the 1st of every month. Current Patrons won’t see any change with their payment at all—they’ll be charged on the 1st of the month like always, they’ll just get to see more of the good stuff right away now.)

I’ll probably still have some rewards I’ll Private Message to Patrons each month, such as the high-res files, because I want to reward folks who pledge every month with something special. But for most of my rewards, I’ll be able to post them right away. And that’s a very good thing. 🙂

Speaking of rewards I’ll be PMing out, $5+ Patrons for March will get to see the full nude version of Commander’s pin-up once their pledges clear after the first week of April. $10+ Patrons will get sent a high-res version of that image plus this special Spooky Kiss, both with over double the resolution!

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! The Annihilator is no one’s lap dog! Good to know! What kind of dog is he then?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Keep telling yourself bubba!

    • *sigh* Looks like this one is yours.

      • The last couple of pages I thought were mine but it was someone else’s. Disqus likes to be a jerk that way. -_-

        So how many is this??

        • I haven’t updated the list in awhile, I will figure it out tomorrow. ^_^

          • Oh no worries at all. I thought if you had it at your fingers tips. No need to count. 🙂

          • I will have it at my fingertips when I update it after being lazy for a few pages/. ^_^

          • Okay! 😀

          • 46

          • I’ve gotten up there!!

          • I think my last was 72 >.> My goal is still to reach 100 before this is over *lol*

          • 😛 Will you retire then?

          • 😛 Will you retire then?

          • 74!! I didn’t think I’ve had 5 since my 69. I thought I had it down. Not sure my 69 was my 69 then xD

          • I think I congratulated you on it…should have been the last page of the Flyboy arc and you have 5 so far in this chapter. 69+5=74 ^_^ 😛

          • *lol* That is correcy. I only remembered having gotten three. Well, two closer to 100 🙂

          • 7, 9, 13, 16, 18

          • 7, 9 and 13. How peculiar I got those. The phrase ‘7, 9, 13’ is something you say here. It’s akin to Knock on Wood.

          • I can understand the 7 and 13 in that, how does the 9 fit in?

          • I think my last was 72 >.> My goal is still to reach 100 before this is over *lol*

        • Chris Dangerfield

Well considering this is PAY-PER-V, you owe a lot of money on your next bill. 😀

    • Chris Dangerfield

Bubba? Maybe that’s the issue? Those long-ago parents were in the good old trailer park and one night… well needless to say the next morning the rents and said trailer were gone. He was all alone and never quiet recovered from the “abandoned” bit. (ouch)

  • Uh huh,,,,sure

  • davefragments

He really has convinced himself that he is right, absolutely positively right. No doubts about it!

  • Saxon_Brenton

He really has got this ‘self-identification as a villain’ thing down pat.

    • Chris Dangerfield

Maybe name tags… I mean just until he’s clear. I wonder if Sircea has to pin the “Diabolical Plan of the Day” to his shirt after evil scheming class so his parents get the homework?

  • syllibub

“I truly don’t believe it’s your intention to insult me.”

Dude, have you been here for this conversation?

    • Tyler Griffin

Not really, He’s just taking the Cliffe’s Notes

    • Chris Dangerfield

I may have to have a wee sit down with our Kyle and explain that after a date like that, you can’t be all subtle when you insult the “bad date.” You have to say it right out!

“You suck, Dude! And not in the good way. Let me spell it out for you… you are a seriously lousy lay!”

Have faith, Kyle will get there. Remeber this was his first major romantic betrayal… He’ll learn to just come out, cut to the chase, and call Duncan the wank-trumpet he is.

We just need to let him grow and learn. D’awwwwwwww…

  • syllibub

And how can you weigh every option when you’re relying on someone else — someone with significant bias — to tell you what the options even are?

  • My dearest Duncan, who, pray tell, are you trying to convince?

  • Now who’s being insulting?

    • Saxon_Brenton

I would have thought ‘condescending’. There’s a few places here where Annihilator reminds me of Dr Doom trying to be noble and above-it-all, when in fact we all know darn well that a lot of his motivations are underlaid by responses to decades old perceived slights against him.

In particular, the bit in panel 4: “I truly don’t believe it’s your intention to insult me, so I will forgive this overreach.” But even the lead in from the “Enough!” on the last page into the first word balloon that includes: “And it is flattering, I suppose, that you want to see yourself in me.” Annihilator is framing the argument in terms of himself being the benchmark for others to enviously rise to match, and using a lot of verbiage in the process. No wonder Killer called him a “pompous pseudo-intellectual”.

      • Condescending works too. But condescension can be insulting.

Duncan does think highly of himself, but I would be that’s part of his armor.

        • Chris Dangerfield

Well, I think it’s entirely possible that Dunc has some schmootz on his armor (like spinach caught between the teeth after lunch, it’s not a good look) and if HIS mom were there she’s be spitting on her good hanky and scrubbing his armor ’til she got it off…

“MOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM… (not in from of the super heroes… I told you!)”

  • I’m convince Duncan is some sort of terrier. Stubborn, arrogant, yappy. 😛

    • Kate G

      A JACK RUSSEL!

      • More than likely!! The little bastards.

        • Kate G

Well, I mean, a Jack Russel does hold the world record for popping 100 balloons (23 seconds.) And what is Duncan’s power again? Speed? (I don’t remember!!!!)

          • One of his powers. And Jack’s think they’re indestructible.

          • Kate G

Also, he’s yaps and JR’s yap. Seemingly doesn’t run out of energy. Likes to jump. Likes to think he’s five steps ahead of everyone. Napoleon complex.

Yep, I think that qualifies for a Jack Russel Terrier. The only think he isn’t that is totally JRT is the happy face. He’ll be a disgruntled JRT.

Hm, what breeds would the other characters be now….Tsunami would totally be a Sharpei.

          • I’ve met one Sharpei, an adorable puppy, very strong and loving. So I can’t make a judgement.

          • Kate G

Sharpei are very protective and were war dogs in the past. I chose Sharpei because they are strong, suspicious of strangers (Even those that are family that aren’t pack), quiet (which Tsunami is if someone hasn’t screwed up), quite intelligent and catch your eye because they don’t look like any other dog you normally see (and Tsunami is definitely someone who catches your eye because he doesn’t quite fit society’s norms.) They’re also quite stubborn and independent in mind so you actually have to socialize them early to keep them loving.

A fun fact about them: they lose their wrinkles as they get older. If only we humans did that.

            http://www.woofipedia.com/discover/breeds/chinese-shar-pei

          • Duncan could also be a Pomeranian. Puffy, superiority complex and feisty.

          • Kate G

You know, I’ve never liked Pomeranians. I call them them Puffy Ankle Biters (aka the PAB.) They’re so high maintenance too. Duncan is pretty high maintenance.

DUNCAN: I dub thee a PAB.

          • Chris Dangerfield

I was thinking of Hunter as the Pom and Killer as the Yorkie…

          • Chris Dangerfield

They are. I CAN attest to that.

          • Chris Dangerfield

            Point!

          • Chris Dangerfield

No it’s balloons too… maybe you have a partial point…

        • Chris Dangerfield

          Oh NO you didn’t!

          • Oh yes I did. We had three JR boys and they were little bastards up to no good, well my Yogi was a good boy, but still up to no good, getting into all sorts of trouble. And they rarely shut up.

          • Chris Dangerfield

Well they say the problem ALWAYS lies with the parents… so maybe this is understandable… NOW, my angels…

          • 😛

And sir! I have seen you swear and complain about BRex

        • Klaus

Technically a bastard would not be a Jack Russell.

          • You never met our Jacks.

          • Klaus

            Pure bread bastards?

          • more along the lines of attitude and not parental issue.

      • Chris Dangerfield

No no no… never shall the good and refined title of the sacred Jacketh of Russling be sullied by being compared with the petulant bad behavior of this super villain in denial.

For shame you two. You both know better.

    • Chris Dangerfield

      Don’t you dare!!!!

  • Mir

I have the worst food poisoning ever. I feel so weak and pale but I suddenly remembered we had a page coming up today! No undercooked food is going to stop me from reading! Lol.

He’s never been open to listen to Kyle since the first words out of his mouth was calling him weak and that’s certainly quite a hit to the ego for him. Denial and being tricked has no age limit, Duncan. Doesn’t matter how old you are or how young Kyle is. Kyle is right.

    • My sympathy. I’ve had food poisoning a couple of times. Ugh.

      • Mir

Thank you. It’s terrible T_T I hate throwing up so much.

      • Chris Dangerfield

        Bad Fritter?

        • Bad chicken, bad fish, and bad pizza x2 (I will never eat at pizza hut again)

          • Ugh, I’ve tried it a couple times too. Once with undercooked chicken which was mixed with alcohol. Never again! XD

          • The only time the food seemed wrong was the fish, but by then it was too late.

    • Klaus

My best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  • This back and forward between giving insults and compliments in the same sentenses is giving me a mental whiplash – and it’s being said with such arrogance.

Dayum. Dude is making my head spin.

  • Kate G

Somehow, all I can see with Duncan currently is this:

    http://31.media.tumblr.com/2cf9f053dfc6e08578f5105c6bcb232f/tumblr_mxchsd7Cts1rly455o1_500.gif

She too planned a long time. And how did her story end? Turned into a cat.

    • Columbine

May be that is his glorious plan? ‘The internet will love me more when I am a cat! WAHAHAHAHA!!!’?

  • Saxon_Brenton

Meanwhile, random thoughts on background characters. Finally we get another look at Commander’s reaction in panel 3, and she isn’t all scowly face like Red Hot. Rather, she looks to me like she’s assessing.
And in panel 4, another look at the Box Of Doom. We saw a small corner of it back on page 17, but we get to see some of the kidnap victims. Hey, you don’t suppose they can hear the argument through the air holes in the walls, do you? (And I wonder if the Priestess can hear all this…)

    • Chris Dangerfield

Amanda would totally be one of those rad bosses who, when told that her department had been marked for assassination and torture, would look up from her busy desk and cooly ask, “Can this wait till later? I’m a little busy just now.”

I don’t think a lot gets her too worked up. 😀

  • I wonder what the sacrificial victims in the box are thinking about this….nice to see them again

    • Chris Dangerfield

      HA!

Hiya Doki. I’d like to introduce you to Sacrificial Victim #7… Doki… Sac7… Sac7… this is Doki. Wow this is great. You know, I’ve been thinking that you two would totally hit it off. I was chatting with Sac7 this morning and we both agreed that if Team Silver wasn’t planning to totally vaporize all the victims… well he said he’d totally take you out for coffee. I by the explosive in the glass box, he’d totally be into meeting fans over the next few weev

  • Hamish C

    Oh, Duncan.

Methinks the supervillain doth protest too much. For someone so convinced of the surety of his course of action, you seem far too invested in Kyle’s opinion and altogether too defensive in your righteous caustic umbrage. Reducing Kyle’s status to that of a ‘child’ is very much a stinging rebuke; no doubt Sircea would approve. Though the question remains: is it because you feel emotionally wounded over his judgement or is it because there is, somewhere inside, the angry uncertain realisation that Kyle may be right?

  • Saxon_Brenton

Sooo… No comments on the picture in the creator’s notes of Spooky making kissy face with Aandos?

    • It’s something I really want to know more about, I can say that 🙂

I wonder if Anaado is of the same demon species as Laampros. He looks like a flegling version of our scary Demon king.

      • Chris Dangerfield

So, should the fact that Spooky is snogging with a dude who looks like Kyle’s dad and then Kyle is also keeping the Spookster warm (literally per TRUTH OR DARE) at night ?

It seems so sexy, but all my het friends say that when something their girl-friend does reminds them of their mom, there is usually a moment of… “Ewwwwwwwww.” HA!

I’m just an innocent young gay boy and I’ve decided that Spooky’s intentions are entirely pure and he’s just comforting poor sexy Anaado.

Spooky being ‘comforting’ is one of my favorite things. Heeeee…

        • Well, Spooky knew nothing of Laampros at the time of his first kiss, and should he even get to think of similarities when he sees him, then he knew nothing of the family connection until a day ago.
I say keep on comfort snuggling. He had to start his practice with someone back then, and now it becomes a benefit for Kyle 😉

          • Klaus

But remember Spooky later describes what happened as demons messing with his head with sex stuff, with love.
            http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3pt1-page-27/

The again, on the next page he says that it was not all awful.

          • I don’t know exactly what happened with Spooky and with whom, but Alex clearly stated that no underage rape happened, so I don’t know what Spooky has experienced.
He had some good times with Anaado, and he’s a demon so could be a lot/most of it, but we don’t know what it involved. Maybe it was about finding out what he did like, so it wasn’t bad for him.

          • Klaus

I don’t know where Alex said that, but Spooky gives the

clear impression that he was if not raped, then seduced. It would make little sense for demons to worry about age of consent. It is 14 in Italy, 15 in Denmark, 16 in most of the US. What is it in Hell? Does it differ from one cricle to the next?

          • Samurai Jack

Maybe I’m confusing different media (again!) but has it been established that time moves differently in the Hell dimension Spooky visited? Who knows how much Laampros could have aged since Spooky returned to our world? Maybe he got to have some fun with father and son? Or maybe everyone is in for an unexpected happy reunion should Laampros and Spooky meet in our world…

          • Columbine

I sort of interpreted it as Spooky being manipulated into giving consent and the demon in question then using their relationship to further manipulate and emotionally torment him.

  • Earl Patterson

Enough with chat-chit. Let’s get this going into road and bring King Demon into world

    • Hi Earl.
You have the right to wish for the comic to move forward, but it’s not going to change the speed of the comic by you voicing this opinion on basically every new page. Almost word for word. When you say the same thing on 6-8 pages, you go from voicing an opnion and turning it into spam. Patience, we will get there.

      • Kate G

Too bad there isn’t a spam button on here.

        • Columbine

May be we could link to the Monty Python song about Spam when there is spam?

  • Sapfo

I am no longer on the edge. I am far over en edge and trying to figure out how I ended up here. Duncan!

  • Saxon_Brenton

After taking a bit of time to digest the page, there’s still an obvious elephant in the room. For all that Annihilator’s assurances to Red Hot and Commander that he’s carefully thought about the options, we readers know that’s not true. We’ve seen his argument with the Priestess back at the end of chapter 3 where he was playing Red Hot’s role of devil’s advocate to the Priestess’ authority figure.

The question in my mind is, why? Is it, as others including myself have speculated, that Annihilator’s ego is getting in the way of admitting that he was wrong? Is he simply trying to get the last word? Or is it that he is playing for time and knows the Priestess might be listening? (As others have pointed out, there’s isn’t much time left for that sort of gambit. Not only is it almost zero hour, but the spell has effectively already been cast and only needs to be activated. Wasting time talking – at length – with your opponents is not helping matters.)

    • I think some could be ego. Being called out by an 18 year old? Being called out by one he screwed over? And knowing that very kid is voicing his own possible fears? I don’t think he could admit anyone was right at this point.

Unless as you said he’s playing for time having this argument. Or he’s following the one rule of the internet, someone is wrong and he can’t not argue. :/

    Liar liar pants on fire.

    • Klaus

I think he is quite convinced that he is speaking he truth.

  • Shiny Gwilly

    oh dear Anni….
we all know the truth, to some degree, you KNOW he’s right on some counts and that he’s been hitting nails on the head, you’re just too stubborn in your “i’m the bad guy and so i do bad things” mindset, and stubborn in general, to admit that he MIGHT be right
PP is the magic one here, the eldest and all as Kyle pointed out earlier, i’m curious on how and what exactly Anni researched to figure out that the whole wall thing is true and that this is a way to repair it (and the “only” way, by bad guy standards or whatever)
welp, at least Kyle tried and hit some nerves along the way

  • kamishiro

Well the Platinum does seem distrustful but i don’t think Duncan i’ts ” naive ” to fall for her tricks. He is responsible for his own acts, he did it because he wanted and knew the consequences. He is a sociopath after all and a villain.

    • Columbine

Not sure he’s a sociopath, even by fictional-sociopath standards. He’s shown the ability to empathise with and care for other people, more importantly he’s shown the ability to plan ahead. Absence of those things are pretty much the hallmarks of sociopathy.

      • kamishiro

Yeah i have thought abt that. It’s just that i can’t forget the lack of empathy he had in front of that cage full of people, while he was discussing with PP. That was really worrisome.

        • Columbine

It really is. But I sort of think it’s made worse/scarier because he’s capable of empathy. He knows the people in there are human and how they’ll suffer and that they’ll have people who’ll love and miss them and……….he’s killing them anyway.

    • Falconfly

      >”sociopath”
      >is motivated to make a world a better place

I don’t think you know what “sociopath” means.

      • kamishiro

What i know it’s that sociopath aren’t necessarily violent or like those in tv, but they have a lack of empathy and even thought they have a social conscience, it doesn’t have a really big impact on their actions. For me Duncan, also has his own interest on saving the world. I guess because he also lives in it.

The way he was portrayed pages ago, when he could look at a box of full of people kidnapped and just wonder if they shoudn’t find another way. He lacks empathy, he can’t really full grasp what’s to be in that cage. But that’s just how i envisioned Duncan. I could be wrong anyway

      • Columbine

I guess technically you could want to improve the world for entirely selfish reasons? Even if it didn’t directly seem to improve his life, the woman who wrote ‘Confessions of a Sociopath’ claimed she ran Sunday schools and gave money to charity….because doing those things got her social respect which made it easier to manipulate people around her.

        • Falconfly

This is, there ain’t going to be a lot of appreciation in this scenario…

          • Columbine

May be. Depends how him and PP play it I guess and how widely known the fact they caused this becomes. They could (with their new powers) style themselves ‘the heroes’ keeping the demons that just spontaneously invaded out of America. It would certainly be easier for them to control the American population if they manipulated the masses into appreciating them rather than having to fight large groups of them all the time-

I dunno. I think it could be played that way. Doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what Alex has in mind or what they’ll go for.

  • karmakat

keep thinking that for your own “peace of mind” naive old fart.

  • Maybe the Duncanator needs a snickers bar. He seems kinda grumpy.

  • Klaus

Wow, that is cold. That man has self control.

    • timemonkey

If he had self control he’d have walked away pages ago instead of being compelled to make them understand.

  • Michael

Now Duncan just sounds like he’s trying to convince himself. Getting a mite defensive there.

Hi everyone, quick note to let you know that I am still here, and while I miss camping with you all I’m very well occupied these days., Now I’m doing my diploma, Wednesdays are spent in class, and Saturdays are spent at cardio class, so I’m not avoiding you without reason. I hope everyone is good. 🙂

  • *looks at box of people* Tsk tsk, that’s not how you make friends Duncan.

    • Columbine

Dammit I had stopped thinking of kink for a few minutes! (Why does Duncan have all the toys?)

  • bandanajack

the various close up and near range studies of duncan are slaying me. god are they well drawn and colored. he has visually evolved so much since the beginning of the strip he deserves a book, or at least a chapter in a book of portraits, of his own. and not in a porny sense, you dirty minded people, but artistically, within and nearly transcending the genre.
@ale@alexwoolfson:disqus and adam, who i can’t tag for some reason.

  • Dennis Grace

Yeah, Dunc, you’re your own man. That ancient crone in the platinum thong doesn’t have you twisted around her little finger. Keep telling yourself that.

  • timemonkey

You know, Duncan, that’s a lot of words just to say “No, you!”

    • Phyre Storm

Dammit. I came here to say exactly that. 😛

  • Mary Klemzak

…Your own hell. Good luck with that.

Keep an eye on him, Kyle. He’ll monologue himself into his own grave.

  • Ellie Vorse

I hope that we get to find out eventually about Spooky’s first kiss! I’d like to know that story! And the kiss looks so sweet and cute! 🙂 <3

  • Snorlaxation

Assuming it does happen, Platinum Priestess’s betrayal is going to be the biggest kick to the balls ever. And I have a feeling it’s not so much going to be a full betrayal, but more like she hid from him exactly what she stands to gain from it all.

    • Columbine

It might just be that though they get exactly the same power and perks PP has a few thousand years training to know how to use em………And she doesn’t seem to believe in treating less powerful people as equals.

  • TwilightDreamer

Ok, now you actually sound like you’re trying to convince yourself of it Anni.

  • Steven Higgins

Duncan: “I have been planning this for years”
And for all you know Sircea has been planning this for decades, maybe even centuries.

    • Klaus

      Yes, exactly.

  • Austin King

No Annihilator!!!! This feels wrong!!!!!!! Stop! At least wait for a second opinion.

  • bronakopdin

late again today as I’m visitin my sis and her kids in the countryside 🙂
it’s so nice to have some nature once in a while if you live in the city ^^

So Duncan is sure about his stuff, and he also kept a cool head after all, stopped his anger and is convinced of Kyle’s goodwill as in not insulting him on purpose! He really thinks good of him, which I like! But what is gonna happen now >__>’
What is the the rigth answer even?!?!

for now I’ll just continue to follow the convos 🙂 and hopw for more of our young protectors to wake up, maybe!

  • Justin White

so he he seems decided; however i can’t help but sense something going on in the background. what is it i wounder?

    • Columbine

I love that about Alex’s stuff, it’s not simple, there will be something else coming and I can’t wait to see it.

      • Justin White

i’ll raise a glass to that

  • KingOfNymphs

In the second to last panel, Kyle’s face is like ‘Aw, shut up.’

  • Maus Merryjest

And Anni just made himself irredeemable.

  • Diviana

Every close up on Duncan’s face just makes me wish I could break the 4th wall to punch him.

    • Klaus

Next in the Young Protectors merchandice line: The Annihilator punch bag.

  • Jason Moon

Welp, I guess he’s at the point of no return.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Huh. I’ve only just noticed how visually evocative the appearance of the forcefields are. The Annihilator’s is an amorphous shape that surrounds him, and I can imagine that it wobbles about slightly from second to second. However the forcefields surrounding the Young Protectors look constraining: they’re skin tight – to the point where profile views of Red Hot have the field following the lines of the individuals tuffs of his hair – with flares of energy at their wrists and feet acting as obvious visual ‘anchor points’ at the top and bottom of the heroes’ bodies to hold them upright.
That’s really cool. Once again, kudos to the creators for putting so much thought and effort into the artwork.

There’s one short sequence of George the Giant Floating Eyeball in this video:

  • D. G.

This would be a good time for the military to finally show up.

  • Chris Dangerfield

I enjoyed this page and watching Duncan’s decent into this highly overly precise pomposity. I’m not sure it’s quite exactly to say it’s that he falls into this overly articulated, verbose, British-esque (?) aural excess… I’m not sure quite how to describe it. However, I kept coming back feeling like the style itself means something.

In the end I think it’s armor. He may be unbending in this moment, but it’s clear that Kyle has hammered hard on every inner doubt he’s been wrestling with for all those “years” that he says he’s been planning this.

Well “years” of planning still hasn’t completely extinguished some element of inner doubt and conflict. It came out in the ONLY true monologue to the paralyzed Kyle post-hell-date. It came out in his glass-box debate with Sircea and we see it on this page. Each time he starts to question himself and then mid-stream scares himself and shuts down any thought that he might have missed something or that he could be wrong. I can see the inner-battle when think about how each moment of struggle is different in a way, EXCEPT FOR THIS ending retreat in high and mighty grandiosity.

I think it’s one of those subtle things that will really show when we’re able to read the book at our own speed and more quickly and easily link various character moments across what is now (online) a longer time-line.

Each time it happens, Duncan is really wrestling and he pull himself together and slide into this high and mighty mantle of verbal armor.

On this page (finally) it was really his line, “I will forgive you this over reach.” HA! Great line, but WHO says that. I mean HONESTLY. 98.7% of the time even Duncan doesn’t speak like that.

That said, when I think of the times he’s most threatened and most conflicted (and I’m talking emotionally and, obviously, not physically) he pulls up this untouchable, distancing, condescending, horribly intellectual verbal style as if to remind everyone around him (AND HIMSELF) that he is ever so much wiser than any one else and there is NO chance he could be wrong.

In essence for that moment he don’s this verbal armor and becomes “HE WHO MUST NOT BE QUESTIONED.” If it didn’t feel so much like the road to tragedy, it would be hysterical. As if for this page only Duncan had stopped off at the BBC on his way.

There is some delicious dialog here Alex, thank you. I like to think that this actually informs us of one of the ways Duncan deals with the pressure of these kinds of commitments… right or wrong… we’ll see. Either way, I like that he is still human and does still feel pressure (I sure as sh*t would). Sircea is 6,000 years old. I doubt having to make decisions like this effects her anymore or, to be fair, affects her in any way that a normal human would relate to. However that’s just a guess.

As much as I twitch to type it (LOL), Duncan is still one of us.

Thank you Alex, Adam and Vero. As always these pages are a high point in a very challenging week and I thank you all for it.

  • Klaus

    Starfighter page 67 is up.

  • davefragments

I went back to the pages of Chapter 2 where Duncan justifies his using Kyle to contact Laampros while Kyle is still lying naked and bound by magic.
Duncan spouts mostly the same excuses that he spouting now. So I am wondering if Duncan really isn’t thrilled and half in love with Kyle. I know that Duncan was defensive when Laampros fawned over Kyle but that might be because Duncan really does want immortality.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I got home from my conference on Sunday to find my beautiful autographed copy of TYP Vol. 1 waiting for me! 😀

    • Have a good trip stick sweet?

      • stickfigurefairytales

I did, thank you! My presentation went well and I got to hang out with a lot of great people.

        • davefragments

          Good news.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yep! 😀

  • davefragments

    Hey, y’all… How’s it going?

    • I have to go broil hamburgers because it’s too windy outside to use the bbq. 😐

    • Tried to make mozzarella sticks for the first time…didn’t pan out so good, but they where edible and didn’t taste too bad.

      • davefragments

You are braver than I am.

        • Not sure how much of it was improvising the ingredients, not being able to tell the temp of the oil (improvising with what we had and nothing to measure temp with), or recipe issues.

          • davefragments

I can’t help with that. I’ve never attempted cheese in my life.

          • But overall it wasn’t completely horrible for a first try. ^_^

          • davefragments

Over time, I’ve learned not to wing it when I cook.

          • I haven’t had any disasters, other than the occasional getting distracted and something burning, and most things fixable

          • davefragments

Well, I’ve made a few dinners of what can affectionally be called dog-food and been stuck to eat it. Tasteless, lumpy and uniformly one color …

      • stickfigurefairytales

I love mozzarella sticks, but I’m intimidated by the thought of trying to make them.

  • davefragments

    it’s early tonight

  • Zeruk

The last panel sounds just like something Sircea would say…..hmmmmm coincidence?
