The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 28

414 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 28

What? What, indeed?! Just say it, Spooky! (This must be one of those “cliffhangers” I hear this writer is so famous for. And the characters are, like, literally on the edge of a cliff! Oh, trés meta, Writer Boy. I see what you’re doing there… >:( )

We have new Fan Art from Sapfo—they sent me a lovely picture of a Kyle crochet they created. Do check that out. 🙂

In other news, in the comments under the last page, some readers suggested that I start adding trigger warnings for the pages of The Young Protectors. Other readers then emailed me expressing their very strong wish that I do no such thing, for fear of adding any spoilers to these pages. I don’t have any desire for further debate on this right now, but I think I might have come up with a good solution that will meet both groups’s wishes.

But if I’m going to make that happen I’m going to need your help. If you are very familiar with the language and use of trigger warnings, would like to see me add them here for the benefit of the readership and, most importantly, haven’t been triggered by any of The Young Protectors pages so far, please email me using the Email Alex link above.

Oh and…

Our thirty-third bonus page in a row! And between updates, you triggered another bonus page! That means that in addition to our regular Saturday updates, a bonus page (page 30!) on Wednesday, March 5th, and bonus pages on Wednesday, March 12th, Wednesday, March 19th and Wednesday, March 26th, there will now be an additional bonus page on Wednesday, April 2nd! February is not even finished and you’ve triggered a bonus page for April! And look below! We’re already at $139 towards the bonus page after that! You all ROCK! 🙂

Superhero-strength hugs go out to long-time super-friend joshua G. for their amazingly generous $50 donation, their fifty-seventh (!!) amazingly generous donation to this comic!

Thank you again for your amazing support, good vibes and incisive analysis of each of the pages in the comments, Christopher! You are indeed a SUPER-HERO for The Young Protectors!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! It seems like Spooky has some advice for fellow Hell Boy, Kyle. I wonder what it might be? And will it actually manage to escape from his lips and make it out into the world where we might all benefit from it?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! Edit 2/27/14 6:15 PM: You are UNSTOPPABLE! 😀 You’ve yet again tipped over the donation bar below which triggers ANOTHER bonus page! • First?

    • Yup 😉 You got it. Holly distracted me for you :-p

    • stickfigurefairytales

    • Holly

Okay yeah. No officially. I hate Disqus. Just HATE it.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Poor Holly! 🙁

        • It happened to me once, but that one it didn’t show a post before mine until 15-30 minutes later even after multiple refreshes.

      • *hugs* Holly….I give you my chocolate.

        • Holly

We discussed this earlier Doki. 😐

          But thanks for the thought.

          • …..It was the biggest apologetic gesture that I could think of that would really mean something currently!

So, as an apologetic gesture, I will refrain from eating any chocolate for the rest of my time in female hell.

          • Holly

No. One needs chocolate during Shark Week. Eat and enjoy your M&Ms. I’m just annoyed with Disqus for making me think i got first. I posted and you did not show up AT ALL until I refreshed. :/

Now eat the M&Ms or I WILL be grumpy.

          • No you have my sympathy… I wasn’t remotely around in time for any hunting, but my first post did weird rejecting things 4 times and did that things someone talked about by bouncing to the top of the page by itself.

So tonight the Disqus gremlins just hated me for not reason… LOL

          • ……I love you Holly. I will try my best to help you out next time. I will distract everyone so you can get it.

          • Holly

Next time isn’t a big deal. But SIX MONTHS FROM NOW! The birthday page. I NEED THAT VIRGIN!!!

          • Yes ma’am I will start preparing the distraction now. ^_^

….well after I finish my current story. ^_^

          • Holly

Yeah no rush. It’s six months from now. XP

          • It will give me plenty of time to fine tune a distraction. ^_^

        • Elrohir

Okay…all this talk of chocolate…you’ve driven me to this! **Pulls out a bar of Scharffen Berger Bittersweet Dark Chocolate and begins breaking pieces off** Right…who needs their medicine?
Chocolate, that balm for the soul and the spirit thank the PTB (Powers That Be) that some long forgotten genius managed to get the concept out.

          • Holly

… Okay yeah I am just going to go hate the universe now. @dokidokibaka:disqus will explain.

          • Elrohir

Umm…I did something wrong? How can I make amends?

          • Check the other page, should be in the comment thread right above the one you were giving me puppy dog eyes in.

          • Holly

I don’t have a job. Food costs money. Thus I’m hungry. I should not complain…

          • Elrohir

The carelessness was mine, but no harm was meant. I can only wish you all good fortune with your job hunting. Best wishes.

          • Holly

Thanks. Hopefully something will come up soon. My ideal job is open for applications until the end of march. so I’m torn between REALLY wanting that job, and kind of needing a job sooner. I move in April. haha

          • *hugs* We are all rooting for you Holly love!

    • Librarican

      So Close! Congratulations.

    • Elrohir

Congratulations milady. Masterfully done. One might study your distraction technique for ages. 🙂

      • Thanks. I actually don’t think I used any tonight? I think I just got really really lucky.

    • I have a feeling that you needed a Virgin tonight… all congrats lovely one and enjoy it!!!

  • Holly

    • *hugs*

    • b3nc0

Phew! The virgin escaped Laird’s sulphurous claws…
*runs & dives in a basement window*

  • Sapfo

    Okaj no virgin

  • So many hugs I want to give right now..

  • Librarican

Edit: that goes for missing the virgin by a minute, and for the cliff hanger!

  • davefragments

  • Holly

UGH THE SUSPENSE! I am going to assume Spooky is going to say “This is not your fault!” But we will not know until Saturday.

  • Yes!! WHAT??

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Is it Saturday yet?

  • jreed3842

AGH! This is the first page to make me growl out loud! Excellent cliffhanger. I need to know more… right now!!

    • mogoskier

Hey jreed, I just wanted to tell you what happened with the audition. Sadly I did not make it. It sucks but at the same time I know how small for the cast was for the play so I’m not surprised. I wanted to tell you though because you help me with it. Again thank you for that.

      • jreed3842

You’re very welcome! I’m glad I was of assistance!
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t make it… trust me, I know how that feels.
But, I suggest reading other plays to try to find a good variety of monologues to use in the future!
Breaks legs in the future! I wish you the best! 🙂

  • Μια νέα σελίδα είναι μια χαρά για πάντα!

    • Holly

This is all Greek to me…

    • SofiaT

      Μέσα έπεσες.

      • Indeed! 🙂

        • SofiaT

How on earth did you manage to understand that? I used slang that Google Translate wouldn’t have much luck with, on purpose 😛

          • I must know what you said, cause Translate did indeed get it wrong.

          • SofiaT

Literally, it would translate as “you fell in”.

What it means is “you got it right”.

          • Okay, yes that’s what G Translate said. “you fell in.”

            Heh, that’s cool!

          • Yep that’s what I got from G-T also and I just totally guessed and hoped that’s what it really meant, because I’ve learned with Google-Translate, it is a total wing and a prayer for a lad like myself with one of them slightly lacking ‘mercan edications. You know, that seemed to be missing a few things, like ANY SECOND LANGUAGE???

But I’ve looked like a Dorkasaurus Rex before and, if your phrase actually meant (in Greek) that I smell like a Yak’s armpit, well heck, I guess I’ve been called worse. *snort*

Thanks for the verification. Nice to know I can get lucky once in a while. 🙂

    • SofiaT

Btw, I assume you were going for something like “a new page is always a joy?”
Because what came out was “a new page is a joy forever!” 😀

  • Sapfo

    Alex “Cliff(hanger)” Woolfson! ^_^

  • SofiaT

I swear I checked the calendar and tomorrow is Saturday! I swear!!!

    • Holly

IT better not be. I get my grocery money on Wednesday and my brother is visiting Thursday and Friday. XP

      • Sapfo

Does the week not go like this: Wednsday, Saturday, Thursday, Friday, Wednsday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday……

        • Holly

But Camping is on Tuesday for many of us. Also Tuesday is inexpensive grocery day. ^_^

          • Sapfo

Hey, If you are going to be the mistress over Europ then you better be on out time. Or you can just hand it over to me 😉

          • Holly

GMT IT IS! So camping officially starts after midnight. *holds onto throne*

          • Sapfo

Hope you can all languages. German, French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, flamlänska, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Icelandic, Celtic, Polish, Russian, Norwegian, Turkish, Hungarian, Latvian…..
If you are going to be our ruler you should be able to at least speak all the languages. It’s the least we can ask for

          • Holly

English is the Lingua Franca, so I think it’s enough. Though I do speak French and Italian and a little bit of Russian.
If you weren’t trying to overthrow me I’d just appoint you as ambassador for me. But you want to overthrow me…

          • Sapfo

If you give me power then I will not try and overthrow you. ^_^

          • Holly

Cool! You and @DanishWolf:disqus are my trusted ambassador and adviser! HOORAY

          • Sapfo

            @DanishWolf:disqus ? Does she know this <..>

          • Wait.. what are you getting me into now?

          • Holly

You are helping me rule Europe?

          • Oh .. Oki 😉

          • Sapfo

Yay! First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin o.O

          • Sapfo

Come on Danish. We can do it ^_^

          • This is a good thing to know for future reference.

          • Elrohir

Sapfo, can I ask, is flamlänska the Swedish way of saying Nederlands/Dutch? I’ve not heard it before but I can’t get a good translation of it either. Bing was helpful enough to return Flamenco (which I’m pretty sure you weren’t speaking about interpretive dance) and Google only returned results in norsk. Just wondering. Thanks!

          • Sapfo

Flamländska in one of the words for Dutch. It can also be holländska or nederländska.
lol No, no dancing here 😉

          • Elrohir

Thanks! Funny…one of my Dutch colleagues maintains that Swedes are just Frislanders who have forgotten the pronunciation. After a few days in Sweden he can manage to read the paper, but spoken Swedish varies too much for him to really follow. 🙂

  • To quote Dr. Frankenfurter… “It fills you with ‘antic……..ipation’!

  • Sapfo

Spooky, you are using way to many words right now. Just come out with it. I want to know what would have made it better and I need it now.

    *breathe frustrated through the nose*

    • Holly

Proper Build up to stuff like this is important. Otherwise it sounds like an insincere blurt

      • Sapfo

But my nervs can not handle this. I need to know. Like right now.
Patient is a virtue?! Well kiss my *ass

No really do it. It´s white and shining. ^_^

        • Holly

It is frustrating. But at least Alex posts nice and regularly. I get really sad when webcomics have a cliffhanger then go on an unannounced 8 month hiatus. O_O

          • Sapfo

Or even worse, never goes back up again. It´s sad when it happens

          • Holly

OOOO one of my favorite comics did that. The artist was even at a con I went to and i got a print of my favorite character. Then a few months later, she posted that she just WAS NOT GOING TO CONTINUE. T_T But I at least have my Bloody Murphy.

          • Sapfo

            Good in the bad -_-

          • Holly

Yeah the Con was in March of 2009, she posted the last page around then. Then in January 2011 she posted that she was dropping it.

          • Feverfew_M

I did not read that right, at first… 😀

          • Me neither. I still have to look at it twice.

          • I don’t think I’ve had that drink……..

          • Glorified Bloody Mary.

          • Glorified = ?

          • Basically a Bloody Mary with a twist.

          • Thank you… that also works just fine. XD

        • Elrohir

Okay…rarely do I ever actually chuckle while at the keyboard…but that closing line? Too funny.

        • Will it make it Saturday? ‘Cause, if so, I’m puckering up right now for a next page smooch…… XD

          • Sapfo

If you can get Spooky to do it. Then yes!
Okay, your kiss will make it atleast to friday morning. Spooky would have made it all the way. Just so you know.

          • HA! Magic Sapfo Bum! I like that. Like a Tardis only prettier.

          • Sapfo

            Jupp ^_^

(why do I have Christina Aguilera song Genie In A Bottle in my head now o.O)

          • Holly

Because you must be rubbed the right way?

          • Elrohir

two keyboard chuckles in one hour…a good night!

          • Sapfo

Spooky, you better rub me the right way. I can make your wish come true! 😀

          • Feverfew_M

OMG. This whole conversation. Dying here. XD

          • What if your first sentence IS my wish?

          • Sapfo

kinky Chris, well, your wish is my command.
I start to get pampered by all this attention.
            Spooky, a rub please.
Oh, yes, That is the right way. ^_^

          • Oh, my fault for not being more specific clever Sapfo. I was wishing for Spooky to rub me (or Kyle) the right way. 🙂

  • silibub

“They were monsters. They did what monsters do.” I guess this viewpoint makes sense given that Spooky’s made a career out of fighting demons; if they were morally ambiguous by nature, it would be harder to do. I wonder if there are categories of demons, some more intelligent than others. Laampros would likely be the highest order as a hell king, and evil as he might be, humans understand him enough to be able to bargain with him. I wonder if lower orders would be more animalistic, to the point where maybe they don’t even speak, and what kind of demons Spooky usually deals with as part of his job. …Not that any of that’s really relevant to what’s happening here on the page, but I’ve been thinking about it.

I wonder how Spooky managed to get back — if it was something he did on his own, or if others on Earth had to intervene. He says people were there, and I’m hoping he got some kind of therapy. It’s hard to believe he would be so well-adjusted now without it. I’m curious about what he’s going to say, though, since you’d think sentiments like “it’s not your fault” would have been covered.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Maybe not, though (about “it’s not your fault” having been covered). Some people can be complete scumbags in how they treat someone who has been through a lot of trauma and abuse.

      • Holly

I can state for a fact as someone who has encountered stuff, that yeah people can be really damn callous sometimes.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Sometimes I just want to punch so many people…

          • Holly

mmm I want to comment but I don’t want to get into anything Triggery… But yeah, sometimes people really need a good thwap to the noggin.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I strongly agree. And anyone who’s hurt someone like the beloved folks here, whether directly or through their words and reactions, definitely qualifies.

          • ….heh…..only punch?

……hmmmm I think my evil side is starting to emerge….

            …..brb I think I need more chocolate

          • Holly

          • Insufficient chocolate intake?

          • Holly

Yes. Chocolate gives you Endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy People don’t Kill people.

(QUIZ: What flim am I paraphrasing?)

          • Legally Blonde.

You have NO idea how many times I have used that quote.

……and I think I have only watched that move once.

          • Holly

          • It was made into a musical?

          • Holly

YES! It is amazing. Though the lyrics in the UK version for one of the songs is better than the North American version.

          • Well that isn’t surprising….one of the reasons I prefer subtitles. I love watching foreign films in their original language with subtitles. It packs more of a punch. Not sure if the same could be said of our stuff.

          • Holly

            want to know the line?!

          • Sure. ^_^

          • Holly

So in the song “Positive” when the Greek Chorus is suggesting Elle beat Vivian up, Elle responds.
            “Girls, Girls
            Violence is never wise
Not the way to win back guys
            Anyway she’s twice my size
            Who’s got a plan B?”

However, in the superior UK version it’s:
            “Girls, Girls
What if she’s a Violent Nut?
She my stab me in the gut
With the stick that’s up her butt
            Who’s got a plan B?”

The lyrics in the song Ireland are also different depending on the version, but I like both equally.

          • I like the UK version. ^_^

          • Holly

            ME TOO XD

          • Elrohir

Yeah, some people are just callous, others can be downright mean…and some folks are just completely unconscious about other people’s feelings. I haven’t been in a fight (physically) since I was 20, but mostly because I remember something that my grandfather (old world Sicilian) tried to teach me when I was 14. He could see that I was angry and when I explained that it was because some morons were telling the same old boring Italian jokes, he just looked at me and said:
“If you listen to dogs barking, you’ll go deaf and not learn much.”
And most of the time, I just put the comments down as unworthy of a response. But honestly, I’m much better at doing so when I’m the target, as opposed to somebody else. It’s not a perfect answer, but hey, it’s an imperfect world.

          • Holly

            I LIKE THAT SAYING! ^_^

          • stickfigurefairytales

I like your saying. And yes, I can definitely identify with the fact that it’s a lot harder to follow it when somebody else is the one being hurt by people’s words, especially when it’s someone you care about.

          • I actually like that about you a LOT.

Edit: No joke. I feel confident that you’ll punch for the right reasons.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Aw, thanks.

      • silibub

That’s certainly true. Wishful thinking on my part, maybe!

        • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, I definitely wish that everyone who goes through any sort of horrible crap like this would have someone to say that to them.

  • For me, these past two pages, I find that I like the panels where we only see a partial of Spooky’s face. There is something so remote about it. Just that little piece, especially in the 4th panel on this page.

    • Sapfo

We can not see his eyes. I hope for a really good emotion scene with his eyes on the next page.

      • Holly

I also like that in the final panel is mouth is partially open so the words are RIGHT on the tip of his tongue for Saturday.

        • Librarican

I kind of like the fact that he is tripping over his own tongue. We usually see him as so self assured that it is kind of nice to see he is human.
…. Wait, did that come out wrong?

          • Holly

No I think it was apt ^_^

      • Well yes, but it’s so solemn. Sometimes the mouth responds without us, just a slight tightening, a little quiver.

  • Librarican

I just attempted a non-trigger description in the comments on previous page, if anyone wants to weigh in on the usefulness or wording/language.

    • stickfigurefairytales

It sounds pretty good to me, but I obviously can’t speak for other people.

    • Elrohir

I certainly understood that their was nothing trigger-worth in what was to follow, but the wording left me a little bewildered. And I can’t pinpoint why.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Okay, I’m heading to bed now. Goodnight everybody!

  • cheerbearp

I get a figurative and literal cliffhanger for my birthday… and I couldn’t be happier!!!

    • Happy Birthday!

    • Holly

      • cheerbearp

        Thank you Holly!

    • Sapfo

      Happy birthday Cheerbearp!
May your day be a really good one. ^_^

    • Happy Birthday!!!

    • Oh dude. Happy Happy you are getting some great page for your day I think. Lucky man! Enjoy!

    • Happy Birthday, cheerbearp! I hope you have a great day! 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Happy birthday!!

  • “.. but I wish someone who’d been there had said it to me”

^I wonder if Spooky is hinting at someone specific or just in generel here. How many does he know, have he met and/or heard about that has been on a literal hell ride?

The pages in this scene are so emotionally strong both because of their hard revelations, but I also think it’s got something to do with Spooky being so serious opposite what we have seen basicly all the way up to this time in the comic. This switch hits us readers harder because it IS Spooky.
We get to see more of him. The cheery side and this serious side are both him but, despite helping people in therapy, he doesn’t usually opens up this much about himself.

  • David Welbourn

aaaaah. “What?” indeed. I don’t even have a guess for this one.

    • David Welbourn

I suppose I could idly speculate instead on where Team Immortal-Wannabees are laying down the welcome mat for the demon horde. A volcano? Mount Tartarus? Mecca? The moon? The labyrinth of Crete? Alcatraz? Lake Titicaca?

      • John

Las Vegas would be my pick

“You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany” 😛

        • Elrohir

Now THAT was funny…and in context…well done!

          • John

Thankyou. It’s unfortunate, but I can’t tell a joke to save my life.

I can, though, be funny. Usually when I’m not trying. Like then (I was going for ‘cool and somewhat nerdy’ 😛 )

          • Elrohir

Well is was cool and somewhat nerdy. It just also happened to be funny and in context. 🙂

          • John

Why thankyou Elrohir; thats good to know 😀

      • Klaus

        Where is mount Tatarus?

        • David Welbourn

Well, Tartarus, according to Greek mythology, was an underworld prison for gods and evil kings and other nasty folk, and located as underneath Hades (Hell) as Hades was beneath the realms of mankind. In theory, Mount Tartarus is a mountain in Greece somewhere that has a secret cave entrance to Hades and Tartarus. As far as I know, there isn’t any Mt. Tartarus in the real world, but, y’know, maybe there’s one in this webcomic’s world?

          • SofiaT

Ah, I believe you’re talking about Mount Taygetos. Legend says in the caves of Taygetos in the Peloponnese, is an entrance that leads to the descend to Tartarus

          • Klaus

Erebos is sometimes used as a synonym for Tartaros. There is a Mount Eberus in the real world. Would it do?

          • David Welbourn

The volcano in Antarctica? Yes, it would do nicely as a portal to and from Hell, but are our good guys able to survive in frozen Antarctica? Perhaps Kyle, Spooky, and Flyboy can manage it, but I’m not so sure about the rest of the team. You do want our Young Protectors to win, right?

          • Klaus
  • RustyBurrell

Alex, I just want to grab you by the shoulders and shake you for that monster of a cliffhanger >.>

  • SofiaT

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” (My favorite Christopher Robin quote!)

All jokes aside, there are a few different things that I’d love to hear Spooky tell Kyle right now. But as always, I think Alex will manage to both surprise and delight me on the next page.

  • EMR has updated for those that read

And if anyone hasn’t yet read this amazing comic that has music accompaniment with some of its pages, you can begin reading it here:

  • Adam Irving

Just installed Disqus on my own website. Used it first here!

In more related news, another gorgeous page that furthers the story along. I’ll admit, this isn’t the most *cough* subtle *cough* you’ve been, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It won’t be a big deal when it’s all together and we can just turn the page! Can’t wait for Saturday!

    • Thank you, Adam. 🙂

(And yes, I agree, that it won’t of course feel like a cliff-hanger once it’s collected in book form—and reading these pages all at once is the ultimate intention I have for all this comic. But seeing that they were actually on a cliff’s edge, I couldn’t resist the call out. 😉 )

      • Lillihandra

Oy… I think it’s time for bed. I saw this and was like “BOOK?!?!?!?!” before I remembered that yes, there would be a goram book and I’d already supported the Kickstarter. On the other hand, with my brain scaring itself, I may not be able to sleep because knowing my luck I’ll be stuck bumping into the pillow thinking someone is there and feeling the blanket and wondering what’s grabbing at my foot… >.<

      • Adam Irving

Hah! Oh, I’d have thought something was wrong if you HADN’T made use of that. You’ve shown a wide array of emotions and details, from serious to steamy, from friendship to love to hate to action to adventure to surprise to more surprise to discovery to embarrassment to whatever else I couldn’t rattle off the top of my head, I am all for some art humor along the way. There’s something satisfying, actually, to see artists tip their hat to the craft. For all it being “obvious” to us (not helped AT ALL by you calling it out in the notes), it really is still pretty subtle.

Speaking of which…might there be a special version (like the director’s cut of a movie) where your comments would appear as footnotes at the bottom of each page? That could be really a lot of fun!! Heck, it’d be fun to see your comments along with Adam’s and Vernoica’s (e.g. “I had a lot of fun drawing this!” or “you have no idea how many different colors I used before finding the right one for his baseball cap here!”).

        • That’s an interesting idea. I’m not sure if we’d have enough comments for every page, but perhaps for certain pages, there would be things we could add. Maybe once the whole arc is complete I can think about doing something like that. 🙂

  • Kiri

That Crotchet Kyle is gorgeous! And I love that he’s hanging with the tiger. 🙂

    • Sapfo

      Thank you!
Tiger likes to be in the photo, and refused to move 😉

      • Your Kyle is indeed gorgeous!

It makes me want to learn to crochet. Not sure I can do it. I’m fumble fingers when it come to crafts.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Yes! I loved the photos!

  • TwilightDreamer

*face plant* dang it!! On the edge of my seat again!!
Lol XD I want to know what Spooky was gonna say!! But great drama 🙂

  • Lady Mania

Ok that tease was just mean! Now I’m going to sit here the rest of the week obsessing and coming up with five hundred different things he might say.

  • Holly

I’m going to bed. Good night all.

  • Mary Klemzak

Ugh torture!! How dare you make us wait another 4 whole days!

*bangs on every wall in house in frustration -“ow!”*

As for trigger warnings, if people haven’t tuned out and stopped reading by now, I think we’re good. Life doesn’t come with trigger warnings, and it’s been stated before, that this does get better, Kyle is going to kick ass, in a big way, so there is hope!

  • This was shared on my facebook and I all I can think of is…..”I wonder how hard that thing is to play and could I do it?”

  • SofiaT

On that second panel, with his back turned on Kyle and his hands in his pockets, it’s the first time that Spooky seems much older, more mature -and like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. I guess, in a way, he does.

And so much wisdom. His line on panel one: “They were monsters. They did what monsters do”. Matter of fact, simple and true. They did what monsters do. Because they were monsters. Not because of something that Spooky did, or what he was. He didn’t cause it, he didn’t invite it, but he did survive it.

But you know what I love the most? That -as it has become obvious in the comic so far-, even with a bone-deep maturity and understanding of the world, with all its good and evils, Spooky is still a kid inside. After everything, the kid inside him is still alive, having fun in the way that only kids can have fun, generously and unapologetically.

…Can I petition for Spooky to be my best friend? Please?

    • Only if I can join in that petition!

      • SofiaT

        *sigh* Sure. I can share… I guess.

        • Well if you don’t wanna… I just thought could be friends with both of us.

        • Jac

There’s enough Spooks to go around, ladies~ 😉

    • silibub

What I really like about Spooky saying that it was nothing personal, and the demons were just acting according to their nature, is that it suggests a mature and healthy perspective — that is, he’s been able to process his experiences in hell and heal from them. It’s the kind of view that comes with time. Based on my personal experience (for whatever it’s worth), hearing “it wasn’t anything you did” can be somewhat cold comfort — at first — after a traumatic encounter, because it can leave you feeling like it could easily happen again, and there’s nothing you can change about yourself to prevent it. But it’s really valuable to hear, and repeatedly, because eventually you realize, yeah, it’s true — there’s nothing wrong with you, and you can have had this experience and still be a complete and good person, because none of it was your fault. Spooky’s gonna be great for helping Kyle through this — I’m weirdly proud of them both!

      • SofiaT

Exactly. “It happened because I deserved it”. “It happened because I caused it/invited it”. “It happened because I was too stupid to say/do something -it was all my fault”. It’s just a few of the most common things running through the mind of someone who’s been abused. Even when your logic tells you that it wasn’t you, it wasn’t personal, the same thing would have been done to anyone else because that’s what monsters do, your feelings take time before they follow. To be able to say what Spooky said as not only something that your mind knows, but as something your heart knows too, it means you’re really there. You’ve made it through.

Got pride in me in spades for that boy. 🙂

    • Jac

Everyone, if you’ll look under your chairs now, you get… a Spooky! And you get a Spooky too! Everyone gets a free Spooky!

  • John

    I mean, erm… GAH!!!

This suspense is going to kill or hideously maim me!

Bad Alex for making it this suspensefull! Naughty! Down!!

  • bronakopdin

Oh really now Spooky, I never knew you can beat around the bush so much!
Though I guess it’s to be expected… it’s not like it is easy to talk about those kinds of experiences and maybe he just needs to collect some courage within himself before actually saying it?
Depends on WHAT is actually coming ^^

  • fujoshifanatic

Yes, Spooky, say what you need to say…damn, now I’m going to have a John Mayer bug in my ear all day. :- Beautiful composition to this page, from the panel placements to the spectacular backdrop to even the placements of Kyle and Spooky within the panels, they are doing as much for me as this juicy dialog. Well done! This is going to be such an awesome read when it’s printed! At least I won’t have to wait until Saturday for the next page when the book is in my eager little hands.

And oh Spooky, can you get any more awesome? If there is ever a spinoff comic featuring you as the lead (since you are already quite the hero), I would be SO IN!! Hopefully a certain clever Writer Boy can make that happen?

    • dammit, I didn’t even think John Mayer, but because of your comment now it’s definitely in there. 🙂

  • Cman65

  • CLİFFHANGER!!!!!! UGH!!!

  • davefragments

I just realized that page 27 and 28 are facing pages and meant to be read together.

  • Dammit, Alex!

  • Evil. You’re evil.

  • Don’t leave me hangin D:

  • Cydney Sabin

But.. But… You can’t just end the page there… Spooky was talking…. And you don’t interrupt Spooky… Waaaaah….

  • >:(

  • vessto

Awww! More surprises! I got the feeling that after Spooky’s revelation Kyle will have even more tasks in his defeat-the-evils schedule.:)

  • guh how could youuuu

  • Shinashi

Poor Spooky… Damn that’s sad for this jolly little guy. :c

    • Rashel Izro

As the saying goes: “The loneliest people are the kindest, The saddest people smile the
brightest. The most damaged people are the wisest. All because they do

      • Steven K.

Thank you for this comment – makes me feel a little better.

      • Shinashi

        I’ll marry you and Spooky.

        • Rashel Izro

*blush* What? where did this comment stem from?

          • Shinashi

            The saying? 😀

          • Rashel Izro

            *blush harder* If only.hahaha

  • Andy Diehl

Hello. I just made this account so I could post this theory:
On the previous page Spooky tells Kyle that birthdays have power and many spells use them. That got me thinking…
In chapter 1 pg 56 we learn that Kyle’s first orgasim resulted in a disastrous fire that’s lead him think he cannot have sex. On panel#3 of that page he says that he had “just turned twelve”.

What if Kyle had actually had his disastrous experience *on* his birthday? At the time, there was no reason he would think that his birthday had anything to do with it. But maybe instead of Sex = BOOM for Kyle, it’s actually Sex + Birthday = BOOM.
Fluke’s inability to understand Kyle’s desperation makes me think that he doesn’t realize just how frustrating Kyle’s situation really is. And while Fluke is musing that there’s other fish in the sea, Kyle seems to be resigning himself to never having sex again (which is depressingly understandable since he thinks he can only have sex with fire-proof people in fire-proof environments). So unless Kyle meets a handsome, gay superhero with invulnerability and an asbestos lair, there can’t really be a happy ending for him. Unless maybe his sexual-volatility is only really a danger once a year.

    • SofiaT

      That’s an interesting theory!
Welcome to the community, Andy! 🙂

    • Welcome Andy!
I must agree with Sofia, that is a great theory!

  • Pikinanou

Spooky ends up being interrupted by someone else, just before he says it….

  • Clef

I reread this entire comic from the beginning the other night and 3 things struck me. First, the art has matured tenfold. Visually it is more stunning and complex. Go team! Secondly, the Annihilator’s manipulation skills are right up there with every career grifter ever known. He gave Kyle everything he needed to convince himself to give the man a chance. That was a a superb con. Don’t get me wrong, Anni’s a worthless wretch for exchanging the lives and souls of million of people he has no right to in order live forever young and I will gladly stake him. (Oh, maybe the bargain comes with a curse and he’ll be a sparkly vampire!) But getting Kyle to do what he needed? That was an Oscar-worthy con job.

Lastly: EVERYONE NEEDS TO LISTEN TO SPOOKY MORE. Holy crap. He tells Fluke straight out that he deals with trauma victims regularly on page 10. By proof of his actions, he literally has done everything right so far. Textbook trauma management from a psychology and counselor’s method. Connect, respect, direct. He tells Kyle exactly what he knows in a non-judgmental way (pg 12) and then gets down on his level physically to reassure him and state his own position in a non-offensive way and then confirms their friendship again by embracing him (pg 13). He stays on Kyle’s level and helps him up, and asks before doing anything to Kyle (pg 14), which is a major thing to remember when dealing with trauma victims especially sexual abuse–they choices were taken away you ALWAYS give them a choice and you have to respect it, even if its a no. He’s a little over-touchy, but he and Kyle have been friends for years and Kyle doesn’t seem to mind it. While Fluke gets all angry and judgmental, Spooky AGAIN for the win on pg 18 and 19 where he continues to reaffirm that Kyle is still Kyle, half-demon or not and yes they are still friends. And again, pg 22 he asks Kyle’s permission to tell other people about what happened not just assume it’s okay. This conversation, though, is all about pg 24 where Kyle blames himself for what happened to him instead of blaming the bad guy. He couldn’t have known better, it *is* okay to give second chances (though maybe not third or fourths) and no, Kyle didn’t “let any of it happen,” it happened TO him. Spooky has been textbook trauma assistance so far… I hope it continues to be part of his character to heal others. I am singularly impressed with his ability to field trauma emotions and thought-patterns. I can see why the adult teams want him, but it makes sense to me why he feels like it would be better to stay with the team he has. What can I say, I am a sucker for competent characters.

This comic has gotten a heavy into something that is difficult to handle. While it is easy to say: “It takes less than a second to be injured and weeks to heal. Sometimes you just lose a fight. It sucks, but it doesn’t mean “fault” or “blame,” it means you lost. And it hurts. God it hurts, but you /heal/.” It is much harder to do. I do not want this to fall into a brushing off of the problems trauma creates for a person, but I also do not want this to become …basically a Lifetime movie. Or Downton Abby. I loved the show, but because of the assault I can’t watch it at all any more. It’s a fine line you all have set yourselves up to walk. I will be rooting for your success in the endeavor.

    • bandanajack

thanks for your perceptive commentary. i have worked in aligned fields in chemical dependency and family therapy, and rape counseling was certainly in the mix, and the whole thing, because of the context, went right over my head. i am really impressed that you made this connection, and possibly more impressed that alex, consciously or unconsciously, used this as story line and character development.

      ^^5 sir or madam.

      • Clef

It’s not as obvious reading them days apart, but if you stack them one after the other, Spooky’s actions become very clear and impressive!

        • bandanajack

ah, but is alex a savant, or did he read up on this kind of abuse prior, or, heaven forbid, have personal experience.. PS somewhere in a therapeutic framework there are discussions about deflecting rather than receiving a compliment.

    • silibub

I love everything about this — you’ve made really great observations about the way Spooky’s handled the situation, and I think you make a good point about why he might have chosen to stay with the Young Protectors instead of joining an adult team. Alex says all of the Protectors have struggled; I’m guessing that, like Kyle, some of them might have been denied internships because of their psychological profiles. He might feel he does the most good working with people like him, who are trying to help others despite any trauma they might have undergone in the past. I can see why he’d be attached to this team.

And regarding your last paragraph, I guess what I’d personally like to see as the story goes forward isn’t Kyle’s recovery process, exactly, but rather how his emotional response to everything that happened fuels his actions as the crisis comes to a head. An approach that acknowledges the trauma and its effects without necessarily making the story about that from now on, if that makes sense? I think that’s a good balance to strike.

    • Shjade

I’d agree with most of this, except the bit from page 22 with Spooky “asking” Kyle’s permission to tell people what happened. Reading that page back, it’s…almost coercive. Look at what he’s really saying:

“Then I’d say it’s time to get the band back together! Unless, of course, you want to keep this whole thing a secret, Kyle…”

read as: So, we can go get the team together and save the world, OR you can sacrifice the world to keep it a secret. Totally up to you.

Now, I’m sure that’s not what Spooky meant, but in that particular instance, I think his relaxed approach to the situation ended up phrasing things very, very poorly. It’s not so much “asking permission” as “forcing Kyle to make a choice.” And really, under those circumstances, how could Kyle say no even if he did want to keep it a secret? Not cool, Spooks. 😐

      • SofiaT

I didn’t see it as forcing Kyle to make a choice but giving Kyle a choice.
Kyle just went through a traumatic experience, in which he had no control. Spooky is asking a question that’s giving Kyle back that control. He’s not assuming anything, he leaves the ball in Kyle’s court. He treats Kyle as someone capable of making his own decisions, not an invalid.

I believe Spooky already knew what reply Kyle was gonna give -after all, he knows him. But he had to ask the question because to do otherwise, that would have been forcing him.

And if Kyle had decided that this wasn’t something he was willing to share with the rest of the team, I’m sure he’d have his back. I saw no coercion, or manipulation, or even thoughtlessness there. Just a friend -and a trauma expert- doing his job.

        • Shjade

Eh, maybe you’re right, but I dunno. To me it looks like a choice that isn’t really a choice. And like I said, I don’t think it was his intention, just…sorta the way it came out.

          • SofiaT

It’s not a matter of right or wrong, just offering a different perspective 🙂

    • Having recently re-read myself. Serious applause for a thoughtful, observant and very sharp summation on the Spooky role. I think you say it very well in the most effective way… with specifics. I agree that it’s so very clear that Alex has worked very hard to weave of a lot of challenging ideas together to quickly become more than the sum of their parts.

Excellent post. Thank you for sharing.

  • JozefAL

This is SO NOT what I wanted to read today. Especially considering the text of a recent Kickstarter Update. And especially the traditional use of “cliffhangers.” I’d certainly hate to discover that Alex has decided that the “current scene” is finished, and start the “bonus comic” pages. And it’s worth noting that it is ENTIRELY possible for Spooky’s comment to go “unrevealed” until Kyle uses it against Duncan in their inevitable confrontation. Not that our sweet Alex would EVER consider such an evil plan (though, considering the kind of plan he had Duncan devise to use against Kyle………..maybe I should quit now before I give Alex any ideas).

    • You know, I’ve written the scene to continue on with what Spooky was going to say, but you’ve given me an idea… Hmm…

      • So evil 😛

        • b3nc0

Must be the comic subject rubbing off

      • silibub

Alex, nooo! There should be a system in place to keep these whims in check — no one man should have all this power!

        • Elrohir

Twas ever thus with the power of creation milady. It takes an uncanny strong will to keep the power in check and not let it consume the creator, turning it only into a creature of power, with no thought for right or justice. We must hope that the Wizard Woolfson is of such metal as can withstand the heat of the forge of creation. To stay a decent soul who would never stray so far from the light as to deprive us of the remainder of Spooky’s tale. Perhaps our belief in him will be the anchor which holds him true to his calling and his course.
**with a hopeful gaze in the Wizard’s direction**

  • Johndar

    “It’s not your fault.”?

  • Sapfo

    “Don´t take candy from strangers.”?

  • Klaus

Birthdays have power. Flyboy has just turned 15, and is the youngest by almost two years, This means that the second youngest, Fluke, will soon be 17. How will Fluke’s luck powers interact with the power of birthdays?

  • Jac

I think Spooky is becoming my favorite character. Rather, I’m starting to realize that he should have been that long ago. There aren’t many people who actively make me want to be a better person, but this character does that for me and it makes me thankful that I discovered this comic in the first place. Just, wow. Alex, you’re an amazing writer.

A few pages back, when they first found Kyle, I began to wish there were more people like Spooky; that everyone had a Spooky, someone who wouldn’t judge and would really care when everything falls apart. And it kind of broke my heart when I thought that, because there are so many people who don’t have someone there to catch them, to tell them what they need to hear and to help them. And now, that thought seems even more clear and painful. That person wasn’t there when he needed them – and though he doubtlessly hoped that he wouldn’t have to do this, he’s being that very person, right now, for Kyle.

I’m… I’m just gonna go now… and cuddle something… and weep gently… I’m rambling. And up late with feels.

    • That was lovely, Jac! I think you’re quite right. Everyone should have a Spooky in their life and a shame that they don’t.

      • SofiaT

Spooky in a box. With a ribbon.
My birthday has passed but Easter is coming soon. Just saying.

        • Duly noted. My birthday is in August. You know, just for future reference. 🙂

      • Jac

Even Spooky should have a Spooky.

Spookyception. Or, dare I say it:

        • Yes, even Spooky needs a Spooky.

Of course that does create a Spookyception. o.O I wonder how one handles a Spookyception? 🙂

    • Thank you for the props, Jac, and the lovely comment.

I’m also glad you discovered this comic. So great to have you here. And yes, I think we all could use a little Spooky in our lives. Glad you think so too. 🙂

  • Kate G

Gosh, what’s with the cliffy? I have a love/hate relationship with cliffies!

  • Oh, and they’re actually ON a cliff. For the cliffhanger. ..I..

    • Cydney Sabin

I wonder if the visual pun was intended…

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I am now Fluke, standing back from Kyle and Spook….Clearing my throat to get their attention, tapping my watch….yes I DO wear a watch….now get on with it!

  • jreed3842

So! I’ve got good news and bad news.
The good news is… I have a job! Yay!
The bad news is it’s an overnight position, and I won’t be able to camp for The Young Protectors any more (Well…. Until May)
    I’ll miss camping with everyone!

    • Congrats on the job sweetie!!!

You will be missed at the camping, but I think having a job and money is good.

    • Sapfo

I feel a conflict going on right now with my feelings 😉

    • I’m with Sapfo. Much conflict. Yay for job and awww. You shall be missed!

    • And we’ll miss you too. But CONGRATULATIONS on the new job! 😀

  • HadrianM

Ok, seriously?! Its been 21 pages since there’s been any action – and by action I mean a flying car. This is getting to be like the Vampire Board Room from True Blood. Lots of exposition and not a lot of daring-do. I now understand why Marvel and DC comics intersect this kind of scene with another character in an epic fight of some kind.

I love this comic and I love the character development – but this is dragging a little. imho.

    • Alex has said that this chapter is going to be more character development/oriented than action. So it will probably feel like it is dragging to some. ^_^ Chapters 4 and 5 are going to be filled with action though. ^_^

    • Lillihandra

Yeah, well, I thought the romance bit dragged on painfully, so you can sit and let those of us that like this sort of thing enjoy it. We’ll get to back to hot guys beating people up soon enough.

  • silibub

Alex has said this is only one of several Young Protectors arcs — this one focuses on Kyle, but it’s highly possible that we’ll get a Spooky-centric arc in the future!

  • My 2nd ever radio interview is now online! 🙂 I need to learn to watch my um’s, but overall I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Interviewer Rodger Nichols, in addition to having an awesome radio voice, really did his homework and asked questions no one else ever has. Great experience all around! 😀

(Hat tip to creator Justin Hall for giving me the Time Book of the Year perspective on the awesome [and awesomely under-rated] Stuck Rubber Baby graphic novel by Howard Cruse during a lecture of his I attended.)

Let me know what you think! 🙂

    • It was very enjoyable and interesting to listen to. ^_^ Just wish it had been longer. 😛

      • Glad you liked it!

(And I was having so much fun, I wouldn’t have minded it being longer. But I think it’s better for all concerned to not have it be *too* long. 😉 )

    • Since I was woken up twice here in the middle of the night, and then had trouble sleeping, I decided to stay up before trying to sleep again. Turned out I had this really nice interview waiting here 🙂

Enjoyed listening to it. Great questions and great answers. *lol* Only because you meantioned the ‘um’s’ did I notice them at first, but it was quickly forgotten while listening to what was said.

Now I’ll attempt to sleep again before I have to get up in about two hours (yes Sapfo, I really do hate the Damn Mouse that is living in my walls).

      • Thanks, Danish! I’m really glad you enjoyed it.

        Sleep well! 🙂

    • fujoshifanatic

Great interview, Alex! I didn’t really notice the ums during the interview, and had you not mentioned their existence I would not have registered them at all. Lots of great topics were brought up during that chat; I have to go find the book you mentioned, as I am intrigued that there was a book published at that time featuring a gay character. I thought I had consumed all the queer media that was available at that time, and to find out that there are more untapped resources I can explore is exciting. 🙂 I only wish the interview had been longer, so Alex would have had a chance to mention TYP as well. Still, it was excellent over all and hopefully it will continue to generate interest in Artifice, along with Alex’ other works.

      • Thank you so much, fujoshifanatic! 😀

And the book is Stuck Rubber Baby by Howard Cruse. I held off forever on reading it, but it really is one of the best graphic novels written, straight or gay.

    • SofiaT

      Thanks for sharing, Alex!
Got some interesting new information out of it! 😀

Btw, did you ever get a link for those ComicCon panel interviews from a few months ago? I missed a couple 🙁

      • Thanks, Sofia! Glad you got some new info. 🙂

And alas, I never did get the link for the last Webcomic Rampage panel—but like I said, I was so sleepy, I barely said a word, so at least in terms of my contribution, you aren’t missing much.

    • Indeed a great interview and very informative regarding women and slash fiction. 🙂

The mentioning of the ums did make them stand out, but they didn’t hinder the interview. 🙂

      • LOL. Yes, I suppose I should have disclaimed some of that, being hardly an expert, but I do believe that slash had a big impact on opening people’s minds for what makes for a good romance story and comic now. 🙂

    • Elrohir

At the top of my list? Articulate, insightful, impassioned, thoughtful, educational and artful. The insights you provided and the broad reach of the discussion made it fun, and as Doki says I wish it could have been longer.
You mention the um’s and I just wanted to point out that at the points in the conversation where you become really passionate about the topic and the narrative that you want to put across they virtually disappear. And in any case I don’t believe they distract the average listener or detract from the interview (almost nobody likes to hear themselves recorded because we sound so different to the outside world than the resonance chamber of our own skull makes us sound to ourselves).
Summary: Really cool interview. Due in part, as you point out, to the skill of the interviewer but for the most part just down to you having a really good story to tell and being a really good storyteller as well. A really entertaining listen Alex, thank you.

      • Thank you very much, Elrohir!

And yes, I also noticed as I became more passionate (and, in truth, became more comfortable as time went on), there were fewer “um”‘s. But it’s good to know from you and the others here that they really weren’t that distracting. 🙂

    • davefragments

That was a nice interview. Involved and intelligent.
I can tell you how the interviewer prepared. I had a couple days media representative training or spokesperson training and they discovered that I should never pretend to be a PR person and take questions. It was a spectacular FAIL and I’m very good speaker. It was just that interviews and press conferences are different animals than giving a technical paper, a tour or conference presentation.
He or she has prepared three things to ask. It might or might not be the same three things you want to talk about. If you think that you don’t need to prepare those three items before the interview, you are wrong. (don’t say that’s too obvious. Go listen to unplanned press conferences and and interviews and see what crap arises uncontrolled.)
This interview was about ARTIFICE and you talked about its uniqueness and the history you put behind it. That’s what you should do in an interview.
When the interviewer sets up the interview, he or she has a ballpark in mind. You should ask enough questions in the setup to determine that ballpark. I would also suggest that you make sure the interviewer knows to mention The Young Protectors as graphic novel #2 so the interview can close on two points – ARTIFICE is for sale and a second story with gay heroes is being written. The interviewer here should never have asked you “is there anything else” while forgetting that Artifice is for sale. As I recall, he didn’t say that at the top of the interview.

The other things I remember hearing are about How You Write which is good because everyone seems to find that interesting – non-writers and writers alike. I also remember a discussion of the names of the characters having meaning. It is not obvious to an audience of non-writers that characters are named after anything other than “Bob” . . . “Clarice” gives me the giggles but “Maven” I didn’t know about. I also didn’t know the origin of “Deacon.” Those are depth details to sell the novel.
The history of the graphic novel was a nice touch. There’s a danger in going to that in that it gives the listener another thing to look at online and possibly buy instead of ARTIFICE. I thought that segment interesting because I didn’t know the history of explicit graphic novels but it did distract from selling your novel. It wasn’t wrong but it wasn’t on-point.
Slash Fictions have always meant to me one things — sex. Kirk meets Spock, Kirk bones Spock. Wesley Crusher meets Klingon women. Wesley Crusher gets feminized and punked. I always thought the point of slash was sex between or with favorite characters. You had to disabuse me of that premise in the discussion. Certain Slash or FanFic deals with more real romance and more real emotions other than merely bodice ripping sex (yippee, wink, wink).
Perhaps there is a different way to begin a discussion of erotic or sexually explicit graphic novels.
You might also talk about the difference between drawing styles. One of the nice things about ARTIFICE and TYP is that they are colorful and realistic. They aren’t gray tones and they aren’t line drawings. The illustrations are rich, lush and realistic.
You also made a good point that this is independent publishing. YOu might want to always add that a kickstarter financed TYP because of the fan-base built on the web. That’s advice for up and coming new authors (and dreamers who write).
One last thing, always ask the length of the interview. Everyone has a time limit, nothing is unlimited. Get that upfront when you are asked for an interview. Obviously if you have three minutes tops, there are only a few things you can say in that short time. Ten or fifteen minutes is a good chunk of time to discuss things. A CSPAN Brian Lamb Hour is spectacular for an author.

      • Thank you for the kind words, davefragments, and thank you for the really interesting perspective!

(And in fairness to his “Is there anything else?” question, we were actually having massive technical difficulties with his recording/VOIP software during the interview, so we got disconnected a bunch of times. He did an amazing job making it all into something coherent, but we lost about a half hour of our time dealing with that and I think it was a bit difficult to remember what we covered.)

Also, I agree—I wish I had mentioned the Kickstarter and the size of our audience. I think that would have made clearer that there is an audience of tens of thousands who are interested in this kind of work and I always like to voice my gratitude for the amazing support of the readers on this site and my Kickstarter backers. 🙂

I do tend to shy away from getting much into detail about the art. While I am fairly involved with the art process as an editor, it’s something I prefer to leave to the experts—my artists.

And that’s interesting that you have that impression about slash, that it’s all about sex. That hasn’t been my experience with it, but it’s good to have that perspective. I’ll keep that in mind the next time I talk about it. 🙂

        • davefragments

I couldn’t hear the VOIP problems. That surprises me.

Make a list of bullet points of what you want to talk about. Stick it in your wallet.

The day that my division did the training, the instructors (and you would know them from TV. The company still exists.) gave us about fifteen minutes of preparation and then pointed the camera and after an simple statement started asking questions. Now I’m a chemical engineer and I’m used to everything being facts. In press conferences there are precious few facts and they nailed me. Every time I reverted to a scientific explanation, the “reporter” kept pulling me away from that and into speculation. It got so bad, I was going to give up. I started to laugh and they stopped me and we went on, desperately bad.

I had the thrill of being used as the bad example on videotape. Interviews and press conferences are not easy and this is from a person who did speech and debate in HS, and as an engineer gave 30 plus papers at national conferences and countless tours of our research equipment, and has no fear of public speaking. I’m laughing now but back then it was a hard day for my ego.

For only the second interview, you did well.
          I missed the first interview.

    • Another very professional interview. You sound very relaxed.

I think you have nothing to worry about. What you called the “um’s” simply seemed to me thoughtful pauses, while you actually considered questions and then answered thoughtfully. A negative “um” creates a sense of discomfort like the interviewee was ‘caught out’. This was simply a relaxed conversation. One that will only get better with repetition on your part.

IMHO, dafefragments makes a good points below about making sure those ACW materials on sale now, and in the future, get mentioned. That is one of the points of giving this man (or any interviewer) your time and a more than fair quid-pro-quo for your contributing to his show.

      I liked…

      1) That you have a simple and clear personal artist origin story.

      2) A story about what draws you to genre-fiction.

      3) A story that illustrates the depths to ARTIFCE. Complete with the wonderful touches like discussing the film Alien and the naming convention fun. Audiences love being in the know (sorry… as you well know).

      4) You talk about gay as a story element that’s important to you, but wonderfully it feels that it’s about story, not a political crusade issue. So, in the interview, ‘gay’ feels very natural and comfortable and not some giant ‘thing’ that is going to alienate audience segments.

      5) The “ums” will just naturally fade when you are doing the TYP interviews about chapters 11-15. LOL.

Bravo. Well done. When you become a household name, we plan to brag about how we knew you when. 🙂

      • LOL. Household name, huh? I’m happy just being know by the awesome community of readers we have here. 😉

Thank you very much for the kind words and all the nice specifics here. I’m really glad you liked it.

  • I think this chapter, #3, even in the more stately pace of its serial form, may be my favorite so far (I know I’m alone in this). Best friends, brothers of all types coming to one’s physical and emotional rescue. Your boys… mouthy and passionate, young and eager, an older brother who is wise and generous. They all love you you, no matter what. All of it blowing the cold misery of his lonely gay closet to smithereens. I envy Kyle so much in this chapter. If I were writing this (LOL… aside from it not being as good…) it would be a just as it is here. A story of how I wished my coming out HAD been… surrounded by great guys who queer, or not, cared for me and had my back, and treated me well. Friends and family in the best sense.

Note: Real-life has been a little intense, thus the extreme delay on these thoughts. Please excuse any spots that lack coherent writing or refer to things that make no sense… Thank you.

Alex, I think it’s fascinating that back during Kickstarter you articulated that this was your passion to create the (paraphrase) “super-hero comic you’d always wished for as a young teen, with a central hero who Just! Happened! To! Be! Gay! I’m loving that that is clearly true here and I’m also getting the other ‘wishes’ that go with that. Wishes of Family who JUST happen to love you regardless. Older brothers and guides (Spooky), who can offer real advice in navigating the treacherous waters that any super-hero must. Younger brothers like Paul who passionately say, “If that shit hurts you? HE DIES?” (I have those friends and they are irreplaceable).

Okay, Alex I know you haven’t finished defining Mitch’s character for us yet, but for the sake of wish-fulfillment, let’s imagine him as the great younger brother who believes in your awesomeness no matter what happens(?)! Hey, I like chocolate layer cake and I like stories that have layers of wish fulfillment too. I’m getting all of those layers here and I know there’s angst yet to go, but I love this break for TLC. This reader needed it. So chapter 3 rocks for me.

Oh, and then there is the “minor” (sarcastic quotes just in case I’m unclear) motivation for Kyle that, perhaps, saving the world is more important than his personal fears. Yep. He’s got the super-hero underpants in the right size to support those big super hero testicles… My favorite chapter so far. 😀

Not to minimize Veronica’s skies, but as I’ve already blabbed about them, on the last page, let me just note here are four more as good or better than the last six. I’m just sending her a special SKY T-SHIRT. It’s almost like the more intimate Spooky becomes, the more expansive and stunning the night becomes. Just beautiful. Again the sky is truly a character of it’s own.

I’d also like to add that all Adam & Veronica’s compliments really include both of them. I don’t understand their process where or who exactly does what, beyond the very subtle “pencil by AD” and “color by VG”… So if I make a comment with the incorrect attribution, please just assume my admiration is 360° and equal and the only thing lacking is my technical knowledge. 🙂

I know, for some readers, this quieter, gentle, less plot driven section is frustrating and they’ll be happier when the body parts start flying again. I admit that dismemberment has it’s own piquant charm, and so I’m all for it, but I am really loving this gentle pause. Many of you remember, I experienced some hard hard triggering of my own, 5 months ago during the date to hell. I’ll spare you all my therapy, heck once was enough, but it was hard in the short term and helpful in the longer term. Thus, it makes this chapter’s ‘pause of the heart’ very welcome to me.

We are getting to see the depth of the team of brothers Kyle has surrounding him. I’m sure, Tsuanami in his own way, and The Commander will also be shared with us, when the time is right. And, even though the interlude made it seem as if Tsunami may have trouble with the gay concept (?). Like most good people I’ve encountered, once they realize that the fact that you’re gay doesn’t change WHO you are, they can learn. I’m going to have the same hope for Tsunami, until Alex lets me know that’s not the way it is.

The revelation of the ‘real’ Spooky currently feels like a gift to me. His inner self is so deeply hidden behind the laughing dude, that I can imagine getting through an entire book that is NOT solely focused on Spooky, a reader might never getting to see this side of him, which IMHO is quite special.

I said it before and I mean it. Kyle is getting an enormous ‘gift’.

I love Spooky’s expression in P#1. In the last page and in this one he’s letting Kyle know that sex with Duncan is NOT an issue. In fact, nor was it Kyle’s fault (such an impossible idea, at this moment and Spooky knows it), so he’s planting a seed) because nothing was personal. Boy isn’t that the truth of life! It is hard to accept for all of us that 99.99% of the time… it truly is not about us. It’s NOT about us!

Most people’s behavior has nothing to do with US. “They were monsters. They did what monsters do.” That is a man who has conquered his TRAUMA and realized that these creatures would have been who they were (with or without him there) even if someone else had been there. He was not responsible for what happened. One of the hardest and most profound self-realizations and one that can be applied to almost every situation.

Heh… I’m not sure if that is at all comforting to Kyle at this moment? But it’s true. Kyle was not the cause of Duncan’s actions. It’s hard to accept that we are not the center of everyone else’s story. If I’m Kyle I might be wondering if Spooky is equating Duncan to a monster? He does what he’s born to do? Remember, when I was so upset about Duncan’s behavior 5-6 months ago, many many commenters said variations on, “Why are you upset? Duncan is a villain that’s what villains do!” So maybe Spooky (who wasn’t there during Kyle’s experience) is saying… “Don’t let hate for Duncan consume you… he is who he is and you will only harm yourself by expecting differently?”

“DON’T SPEND YOUR LIFE AND ENERGY ON HATE (who and how that lesson applies — will be up to Kyle. Duncan, Sircea, Laampros, someone we don’t know yet? Regardless it’s one of life’s harshest, and yet, wisest lessons. It sounds like a core element of The Spooky Life and Hero Philosophy — all directly linked in to his ability. Here he is telling it on C-1, Pg-3, Panel-6.

Where did he learn that last sentence so very well? Maybe some of those answers are woven in here. It certainly seems so.

God I loved the composition of Panel-2. It is so large it meant only four panels on this page (hard on the plot engine, but great for the Spooky charact-o-meter. He stands on the edge of forever, with the universe behind him, and tells Kyle I’m going to give you what I most needed in your spot. My heart goes out, because I think of what he must say and how hard it is.

“They were monsters. They did what monsters do.” In this case those words apply to Duncan, Laampros, Sircea and anyone else involved. Spooky is saying clearly to Kyle, don’t let your actions be driven by hate and revenge. Don’t destroy yourself. His dear friend is balancing on the edge. I wonder if we’ll learn what got Spooky through in one piece.

In Panel #3 he’s so wistful. He’s looking out into space as perhaps he thinks about the man he could have become if he hadn’t triumphed. Very scary. Very inspiring.

So some of this makes me cry in the same way Duncan broke my heart on the hell-date, because I loved him too, and I wanted to skip the angst and go right to the HEA. LOL.

Compositionally, on the whole page, I love their sense of intimacy… that they are alone with these private thoughts. So rich in peace.

That direct Spooky expression in Panel-4 is superb. I don’t know how you did it? That hugely emotive expression allowed the line of dialog to be simple, but the expression says (to me) very clearly, “… And the secret to life IS………………?” Just heartbreakingly gentle. Love it.

So there was lots to think about in these page… about myself, about emotions that I experienced long ago, but clearly still effect me, and about the value of having people who love and support us and so much more. Love it.

I did a lot of guessing with this page and the last one, but I think that IS what we all do with art. We apply it to ourselves and hopefully it helps us think about ourselves, safely and with some perspective. Easing our mind and hearts up and around the hard painful stuff and allowing us to sort through ourselves in safety and with care.

Thank you Alex. Thank you Adam and Veronica. I’m all for any one of Alex’s crazy plans that allows the three of you to do the most possible TYP and kickstarter work possible. This work is just crazy good. This is special and you guys are making this a one of a kind book. My every compliment

    • SofiaT

The third chapter is my favorite so far, too.

    • This! So very much this, since I can only upvote it once.

    • Elrohir

Chris this is really helpful. I’ve said before that one of the really great things about this community is how the various analyses play off of one another and build. There are points in your notes that I hadn’t reached yet (sometimes wandering the cluttered attic that is my mind takes time to reach conclusions) but had been wandering near, and others that hadn’t occurred to me. Really good.
The ensemble of characters that Alex and team have created for us really does weave around each other like a good piece of music. That’s one of the points I had been wandering around that you put a light on. It’s a “family by heart” that anyone would love to have.
Spooky’s lessons (maybe that should be the title of his philosophical treatise?) are subtle, which I find very cool because initially he came across as the constant joker. And now? Deep are the waters that define Spooky and we may never fully know their depth and range. A few pages back I suggested that Spooky was going to say something to Kyle along the lines of “what? did you think you were the only one?” as part of showing Kyle that he is not alone and isolated. But that negative internal monologue going on in Kyle’s head won’t be overcome in an instant. And Spooky clearly knows this. And so he sets the foundation points (plants the seed as you said) for his later proofs to Kyle. Because Kyle has to walk that path of reasoning and come to the conclusion for himself that it wasn’t his fault and he didn’t “deserve for this to happen to me because I’m a bad person”.
The point that people act for their own reasons and that Duncan’s behavior isn’t all about Kyle is a critical one. As is not letting his reaction to it consume him in hate for the one who hurt him. One can not change what the world will hand them on any given day. The only thing one can control is one’s reaction to it. Some people will hurt you through ignorance, some through carelessness and some with intent. But if someone hurts you with intent, even for their own purpose and you are just a side note, and you let that injury become and obsession or a hate for the one who hurt you, then they win. There is an old saying, “the best revenge is to live well”. I would change that to “the best response is to live well. The fact that it will drive the one who tried to hurt you completely crazy is just an interesting side benefit.
But again, well done. You brought a bunch of things into focus and provided new grist for the mill. If only that silly work thing didn’t require attention I could wander about here all day. 🙂
And now like many here, I’m off to work, and trusting to the kind heart and soul of the TYP team to see us safely to the next page tonight and the wonders contained therein.
Alex, it bears repeating again, Thank you for creating this story and this marvelous little world here. You and Adam and Veronica are, I suspect, accomplishing far more than you know. For I believe that this story will be helpful to any number of folk of all ages for the lessons it bears, but most especially to youngsters still finding their place in the world, regardless of orientation. Well done.

      • You’re very welcome, Elrohir. 🙂 And thank you for your very thoughtful comments as well. A pleasure to read. 🙂

    • Thank you, Chris, for another wonderful response. You’re right. Spooky isn’t much of a hater. 🙂 And you comments about family really resonate with me.

    • I think this chapter may be my favorite as well. 🙂 As is panel four my favorite for this page.

      Nicely said as always.

  • OnyxLight

    Oh the suspense….

  • But the thing is that it still has to be made. If the rest is not not held back a little, the extra story won’t be made for about a year. I don’t think the KS support will be an issue, and it will be awesome to have it in print too 🙂

    • Elrohir

93, 107 and 118 are my favorites. 93 for the way the rays come out, 107 because of the way the mountain seems on fire and 118 because I miss the way the sky sets up red and gold like that. 🙂

      • Thanks for letting me know which ones you liked!

        • Elrohir

Well…I LIKE lots of them, but of the recent set, those were my favorites. You have a good eye I think. 🙂 And thanks again for sharing them.

          • I think we just happen to be in a good spot for the sunset, since we pretty much don’t have anything obstructing the horizon.

My brother has told me that he doesn’t see the point in taking so many sunset pictures. I don’t think he understands that no two sunsets are quite the same. Even on completely clear days, the sun doesn’t set in exactly the same spot. Which you can see if you look at my pictures in order of the date. The sun is moving bit by bit further right.

I’m sure the fandom will explode afterwards! 😀

          • Most likely. 😀

    • SofiaT

I just had lunch. First day of autumn for me, it’s raining and I got a bit of a cold.

I got a big mug of tea sitting next to me 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Mmm, tea…

      • It’s been raining here all day.

        • SofiaT

It’s been raining here all week 🙁
But it’s still warm, the subtropical weather of Sydney still feels weird to my Mediterranean constitution :0/

          • It’s very welcome here, but there are burnt areas that the rain could cause slides etc.

      • mogoskier

I’m waiting for for the 6th major snowstorm this month to hit. Can we switch weather please. It so cold 🙁

        • SofiaT

I sympathise but I’ll keep my weather, thankyouverymuch 😛

  • Holly
    • mogoskier

Don’t worry your not the only one.

      • Holly

but if are supposed to be thankful about not looking like we did in the sixth grade, and i look the same… O_o ?

        • mogoskier

Look on the bright side, you look your age. I’m 21 and people are surprised when I tell them I’m older then 15.

          • Holly

I look my age? Really? Most people seem shocked hwen i tell them i’m 25

          • Same with me, people are shocked when they find out I am 30, I am told I look early to mid twenties.

          • I had that at 23. I was wearing a backwards baseball cap at an airport. The lady wouldn’t give me the seat by the exit because well I was under 18 or it may have been younger. HA!

          • Cydney Sabin

One of my friends has the exact same problem.

    • silibub

Naah, I can see how your face has matured. I’m the same way though; if you saw a picture of me in sixth grade and one of me currently, there would really be no doubt that you were looking at the same person.

      • Holly

        OOO HOW?!

        • silibub

Hard for me to describe, exactly, but it’s in your cheeks and eyes — the childish roundness faded.

      • SofiaT

I recently found a photo of me from when I had short hair, back in high-school. That felt strange, I thought I had got rid of them all 😛

        • silibub

Trust me, if I could burn every picture of myself from high school in a ritual fire, I would, haha!

          • SofiaT

Awkward years. All knees and elbows and skinny legs. 😀

          • silibub

I had the opposite issue, weight-wise, but yeah, adolescent proportions are ridiculous. Not to mention some questionable fashion choices…but at least we can look back and console ourselves with the knowledge that we’re like 50x hotter now.

          • Holly

See i never had that magic shove through the other side of adolesence I don’t think.

          • silibub

Gotta disagree — you look great in that picture!

          • SofiaT

            Questionable fashion choices?

I have a pair of overalls from HS that I still wear, very comfortable! 😀

…But yeah, no more basketball shorts with long tees for me 🙂

          • silibub

Yeahhh. Suffice to say I was friends with people firmly in their goth phase and I was inspired to imitate. Poorly.

          • SofiaT

            Ah. *pats back*
I never had a goth phase, unless you count when I first started wearing eye-make-up on senior year. It consisted of only black eye-pencil. I looked like a raccoon 😀

          • I had clothes from the 7th grade to college because I didn’t change much in either direction.

          • SofiaT

            Hear, hear!! *raises tea mug*

  • stickfigurefairytales

Is Disqus being weird for anybody else? It keeps trying to insist that there are new comments above when there aren’t.

    • Yes, it’s been doing that. I’ve had to refresh several times.

  • Well.. I think I’m gonna leave all the virgin hunting for you guys tonight while I calm down. As some of you know, I’ve had quite an annoying day – and it decided to put a big finishing mark on it.

I’m now sitting with my windows and door open after the police and fire department just left o_o

I woke up before I was gonna camp and it smelled reall burned. After using about 15mins to decide it wasn’t my computer (I had left on) that was breaking, I went to look for the smell.
Turned out it was from the 1st floor (2 levels below) had an oven with some very burned food – could see it from the window when I went around to invenstigate. No one respond when I knocked (ouch my knuckles!!!) so I called 112 (Danish 911) and got everyone out.

So yes, I’ve just had a bunch of police- and firemen running around. Btw, it turned out my neighbour was home but very much drunk (maybe stoned) and sound asleep.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh my! I’m really glad there wasn’t a fire, but it sucks that your building smells so bad right now. I hope your night improves!

      • My apartment got it worst, except for the place with the over because the ventilation pipes run behind my walls here at the top.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          That’s awful.

    • Sorry to hear about that Danish.

    • silibub

Oh, that sucks! I hope you’re able to air out your place…and that your neighbor gets some kind of reprimand at least for being so careless.

      • I have window and door wide open (it’s getting cold) but after sniffing at the smell for 15mins I want to make sure I get some fresh air myself.
And I’m quite sure he’ll get a reprimand – and very possibly as good large fine for having the police and firetruck coming out.

        • silibub

Good — there’s really no room for that kind of negligence in an apartment building, where a bunch of people will be affected and possibly hurt. Keep avoiding those fumes!

          • I’m keeping a good eye on myself too right now, because I DID get the worst besides him and I ran around to find the source of the smoke before I ended up calling and getting people out.
My adrenaline has run really high.

    • SofiaT

Damn, that sounds like quite a night! Good thing you realised before he got hurt by the fumes!

    • Holly

    • mogoskier

Well damn that sucks. Have a better rest of the day. Have a disney themes cocktails.

    • *hugs* I am glad everything turned out okay Danish sweet! Did you ice your knuckles?

      That sounds like reckless endangerment?

……and any really cute police or firemen?

      • Yeah what a dumbass. He must really have been drunk (and possibly high) since he could sleep away from the smell and knocking.
The finger is oki, just very sore, and there was a couple of cute policemen. I didn’t see the firemen that clear to judge xD

  • Adam Black
    • stickfigurefairytales

Adam, how come you didn’t claim the virgin?

      • Adam Black

and take it from @disqus_5yYGRkSeuL:disqus ?
        ( Virgins are overrated )

        • stickfigurefairytales

I got my first one ever as a result, though!

          • Adam Black

            Good for you .

So, I’m ,like s saint now, right
leading the sheep to …. a haircut. yes …

        • Holly

now I’m triple sad for not getting it. 😐

          • Adam Black

Your Doubt of me did you in…

I almost tagged you… but I figured your eyes were glued, and I was right

          • Adam Black

holly, i am sure you can get it anytime you want

  • Kyletin

Your voice is great for radio also, Alex! Very natural.

  • Shjade

Fair enough. Technically “this whole thing” would include Annihilator using Kyle in a spell, but that’s parsing into it far more than either character in the conversation likely was. And, even then, they could just get even more ambiguous and sum up with “The world is in danger” with only the vaguest of details as to how they found out/what the nature of the danger is. It could be worked around.
