The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 19

527 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 19

Casting judgment on his friends—clearly one of Spooky’s most favoritest things in the whole world to do…

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Seems like SpookyJokes aren’t getting through to Kyle anymore (for the record, I thought what he said was funny…)—so what effect will this question have? Will Kyle finally start the process of loving and accepting himself or will he fall deeper into despair? And how the heck did Spooky learn what personals ads are?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

• This scene.. I like it more and more.

Spooky .. I love him <3

• Eve

Every scene makes me like him more!

• Sapfo

Okay Danish. You got the virgin. Do this mean I get Spooky then? 🙂

• In your dreams! You already got the back scratch :-p

• Sapfo

• *Gives <3* I shared without protest, didn't I?

• Sapfo

Ice cream it is then, but next time. Just you wait. NEXT TIME I GET IT!
Thank you! ^_^ <3

• Oh pooh! Did Danish’s sore feet cause her to accidentally fall onto the keyboard YET AGAIN and get the virgin. This is getting ridiculous. 🙂

• Oh no, Chris. This wasn’t an accidental fall.. this was a pure hunt for this virgin 😉

There’s a difference in 1) hunting 2) refreshing very random in between doing other things and have the perfect timing 3) showing up and logging on just as page is uploaded.

I’ve done all three, and today was a category 1, in competition with Sapfo xD

• I am happy with second, though your post didn’t show up at all when I got here, despite me being a minute after you. Stupid Disqus.

• You weren’t a minute after me. Both you and Sapfo was seconds later, nothing else. When it’s this close you have to refresh to see who was first – and then hope Disqus isn’t playing tricks and not showing your comment for a while xD

• When your comment finally showed up it said it was a minute ahead of mine and Sapfos….Your comment had 4 min and ours had 3.

• Sapfo

That is true! Some days I am just for the hunt. And I take it seriously.
Today it was more 2 then 1. If not for the game it would have been a pure 1 😉

• My last handfull of V’s have been either 1 or 3, but before that I had a time where it was an almost even mix of 1 & 2.
Hmm.. going back throught the last 20-25 pages, you have gotten it more often than me the weeks I’ve been hunting. Pretty clear to see which weeks Alex has given a heads up xD

• Sapfo

It is harder when Alex don´t warn before. Wolfie, so you mean that a strawberry have beaten you on your own game 😉
But it is also very cleare which days that I have been working. Darn work for getting in my way of hunting
(Yes, I know it is my game too)

• lol.. it can be seen when we post seconds apart, and so far I’ve had the best luck when no warning has been given :-p
That’s usually my 2’s. We’re making virgin hunt a science *LOL*

• Sapfo

Virgin hunting = science = logic
and I do love my logic XD

(the movie Mandela was great. Only cried once)

• And here I thought her reign of terror was coming to an end.

• Coming to and end? Just because I might have to leave some camps early now? Leaving the hunt to Sapfo on her own?
Never! What’s the fun in that? *Bwahahahaa*

• Oh, no, just thought you’d lost your touch after getting beaten to the mark so often recently… :p

• Buuurn.. :-p

And I don’t know about ‘often recently’.. I have 6 out of the last 10 pages >.> .. I might be down shortly, but definitely not beaten 😉

• Do you know what you got into? Can you handle what I’m about to do?

• Sapfo

Alex scrips before editing: “And then the strong son of Laampros was kissed by the Fluke while a Spooky person was feeling his way down his back ….”

• Ha!

(Gosh darn it, I thought I shredded those pages!)

• stickfigurefairytales

Oh, we’re good at jigsaw puzzles.

• silibub

You gotta burn the evidence, Alex.

• Sapfo

Sssh! Don´t tell him that. He might get ideas. 😉

• davefragments

It’s like a reprieve from the Blood Blatter Beast of Trall – to quote – (‘without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat and recycled as firelighters’),

• silibub

I mean…uh…give it to me to dispose of! You can trust meeee~

• Sapfo

good idea

• Jamie Dutton

You’d be surprised what you can do with lots of time and tape! 😉

• HA… Alex’s secret stash!

• Eve

Yikes! You say “the Fluke” and I’m thinking of the X-Files episode…

• Frater Gymnos

• Sapfo

Spooky asking the right question to determen if Kyle is a good demon or a bad demon. And the right answer is…

• bobbyjoeguy

“Are you a good witch or a bad witch?”
“I’m not a witch at all. I’m Dorothy Gale from Kansas”
~The Wizard of Oz (1939)

• Sapfo

“I’m a witch! I can make pencils float. And I can summon the four elements. Okay, two, but four soon!”
“The magics I used are very powerful. I’m very powerful. And maybe it’s not such a good idea for you to piss me off.”
―Willow Rosenberg

But you don´t always have to have power. Is that not right Xander?

“Seven years, […] Working with the Slayer. Seeing my friends get more and more powerful. […] All of them. And I’m the guy who fixes the windows. They’ll never know how tough it is, Dawnie. To be the one who isn’t chosen, to live so near to the spotlight and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes because nobody’s watching me.”

• Jamie Dutton

My fave Willow quote:
“Every girl with a henna tattoo and a spice rack thinks she’s a Sister to The Dark Ones”

• Librarican

“I’m not a witch, I’m not a witch!”
“But you are dressed one…”

• Oooh, Spooky’s gotten serious.

• SofiaT

My guess is that his reply won’t be “To try to take over the world!”.
Degree of Evilness: zero.

• Librarican

Long time lurker, first time poster…
They’re Pinky and the Brain!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the cartoon…

• SofiaT

Welcome to the community, Librarican!

• Librarican

Thanks @sofiat
Now I just have to figure out how Discuss works! I feel like I know everyone so well already through the comments, I finally bit the bullet and jumped into the fun.

• SofiaT

You’ve verified your email with Disqus which is the most important part -you seem to have a good grasp of how the replies work, I assume you know you can edit comments after you’ve posted them too, right? 🙂

And this is how you use italics or bold (in case you’re not familiar with it)

There! You know everything there is to know about Disqus already! 🙂

• Librarican

Haha, I like your shorthand, but just looking at the dashboard leads me to believe there is a lot more to discover. Like, apparently, you can’t be mobile when trying to change you avatar. I’ll turn on my laptop in the morning and see if I can get it to work then.

• SofiaT

*thumbs up*

Just make sure you use your power of upvoting/down-voting for good, not for evil. With great power comes great responsibility 😉

• Sorry if this sounds horribly obvious, but a combination use of the dashboard and comment page itself and you’ll be just fine. Enjoy!

• Welcome to the community… to the danger zone, because you will be sucked in and never leave 😉

• Adam Black

Be sure and let us all know , when you figure it out

• stickfigurefairytales

• Welcome, Librarican!!

I love Pinky and the Brain!

• Jamie Dutton

Welcome and great first post!!

• Welcome!

• Adam Black

wow, Micky is looking a little encephalitic.

• Jamie Dutton

Degree of Evilness: kitten sleeping in a shoe

• “Kyle, if you could do anything, RIGHT NOW, what would you do?”

Erm… well… if you guys don’t mind, I REALLY need to find a bathroom…

• Chris, have I told you lately that I love you?

• And I just read that as if I listened to the song.

• Cydney Sabin

I never noticed the color of Spooky’s eyes before… they’re really pretty.

• davefragments

Spooky isn’t interested in Kyle’s pity party. He asks the right question.

• stickfigurefairytales

Go, Spooky, go! Make Kyle realize positive truths about himself!

• Eve

My money is on “Go back and undo it all.”

• silibub

So this is what serious Spooky looks like — I like him even more! And I think this is a good approach to knock some perspective into Kyle, by having him talk it out instead of dismissing his feelings that he’s horrible and evil. My respect for Spooky really went up after seeing him take the reins here.

I love Kyle’s face in panel three, though. Totally fed up and perfect. I’m looking forward to his answer!

• stickfigurefairytales

I agree with you about Spooky’s approach – it’s much more productive than a simple “Are not!”/”Am too!” argument with Kyle about whether he’s evil, and it’s hopefully going to get Kyle to really examine his own motivations and realize that he is a hero at heart after all.

• stickfigurefairytales

And then they can all go kick some demonic ass.

• silibub

Exactly what I was thinking! I hope the worst of Kyle’s self-flagellation and doubt will be eased after talking this out with Spooky and Fluke (which isn’t to say he won’t still struggle, but the first big wave will be over and that’s a big step forward).

• stickfigurefairytales

*points at you* Yes – absolutely!

• Jamie Dutton

It’s a good question to get Kyle thinking and not just emoting.

• Sarah314159

Whatever he answers, it’s bound to be so undeniably un-evil that even Kyle should be able to recognize (with a little prodding) that he’s still on the side of good. Really smart move, Spooky!

• Jamie Dutton

Perfect question award goes to Spooky Jones!

• MY favoritest thing right now…
The way Spooky uses logic to make Kyle say it himself – he’s not evil just because he found out his lost daddy happens to be a king of hell.

*Squeeezes eyes tight*
I do believe in Spooky, I do, I do.

• Clap you hands if you believe in Spooky!

• I started clapping already on previous page, but Spooky is clearly occupied with Kyle right now. I’m giving my hands a short rest 😉

• Elrohir

Danish you are wonderful! A cowardly lion reference?!?! Too cool!!
And I think that you are correct, Spooky is going to make him reason it through for himself because for most of us, that’s the only way we’ll begin to believe it. Having somebody from the outside TELL us that we aren’t bad/evil or whatever can be ignored. But having reasoned it through for oneself? Now the door is unbarred and open just a crack so that we can begin to believe that there is daylight on the other side.
Once Spooky makes him say it to himself, that if he was evil he would just walk away, but what he wants more than anything is to fix it; then the infection is lanced and can be drained (of all the self loathing and anger). As has been said earlier, not all in an instant, but it can begin.
Kyle may have shared abilities with Voldemort, but I’m betting he’ll choose Gryffindor.
btw…still thinking that Mitch must be vibrating in place with tension by this point. The guys have been gone relatively FOREVER!!

Wow….mind blown….and a little upset that I didn’t spot that

and I love your post Elrohir. ^_^

Yes, poor Mitch….how soon are we going to get to see him again?

• Elrohir

Thanks for the kind words. I’m a hopeless believer in the romantic and the heroic. Too many kind folk fed me too many good books at an early age and somehow some of it soaked in despite the storied density of my skull (which my friends assure me approaches that of Adamantium). 🙂

As to Mitch, I keep doing this mental thing where one of the voices in my head says: “Annnd cue Mitch!”

But my timing seems to be off. I keep thinking that I should just stop trying to map the twists, turns and labyrinthine brilliance that is the mind of The Wizard Woolfson but I can’t seem to help myself. He just keeps drawing me in with storyline elements that I don’t see coming and then I’m having conversations with myself about what I missed or how I missed it and re-reading Chris’ and all the other brilliant insights that you lot keep posting here which spins up even more voices who are soon arguing the options. It’s like the old saying that if you ask 5 engineers a question, you’ll get 5 answers. But heaven help you if you let them talk to each other or see each others answers because then the number of answers expands exponentially.
Fortunately, I find it all so fascinating that I can’t stop. For which I feel I must thank you all again. This discussion group is, as my Scots friends would have it; “Pure Dead Brilliant!”

• OH crap, that reminds me of a saying but for the life of me I cannot remember what it is! I think it might have been in a book….possibly..

• I see that Doki already got the double meaning 😀

Yes, I was refereing to both the cowardly lion and Peter Pan.

They already call him Spooks -and Peter Pan chanting ‘I do believe in fairies’ to make (magic) Tinkerbell come back to life.. I could not resists ^_^

Alex telling me on previous page that wishing hard enough might bring Spooky to life, since he has magic abilities and all… it was just too good not to catch on to that.

• Jamie Dutton

Hey Alex, don’t mean to be nit-picky here, but at the bottom of your author’s comment were you going for Spooky Jones or Spooky’s jokes? It’s kind of confusing, lol. I had to read it a few times to figure out what you were trying to say.

• stickfigurefairytales

I think he was making a play on both, actually. 😀

• Madock345

It’s a pun, dude.

• Jamie Dutton

If so, it clearly went over my head and landed in the backyard somewhere, lol.

• Spooky has said things in a funny way up till now. He’s made Kyle feel better with the light mood talk, but that isn’t doing the job now that Kyle is going self blaming rant.

SpookyJokes is past, now it’s theraphy-logic.
(Love that he can do both so well)

• SofiaT

It’s AlexHumour 🙂

• Madock345

“I wanna rip the Annihilator’s head off. His *other* head…”

I have no idea how Kyle can hold out against the adorable hilarity that is Spooky in panel 2.

• jreed3842

Well! I TOTALLY missed the camping session! But… What a nice page, I like the way Spooky is handling this situation!

• Mary Klemzak

Umm since when is a hand job, sex? Isn’t sex penetration? He’s still got his “cherry” in my book, and he’s innocent. Hes an unwilling pawn, stuck..

Kyle didnt make the deal, the ahole Duncan did.

All Kyle really did was go on a date, be seduced, and then a spell was cast on him so he couldn’t move or talk.

I think he shoukd be able to undo the deal, since he was so innocent, and besides, a soul is a personal thing. A person has the choice to give to whomever they want. They cant be bought ot pawned off by someone else.

Duncan is still an evil bastard though.

• silibub

Wellll, technically there was frottage going on, not a handjob, and what constitutes “sex” is basically up to the individual. For some it means penetration, sure, but for others simply reaching orgasm with another person and experiencing that intimacy is having sex. There’s no hard and fast rule.

Kyle’s inherent goodness might have a lot to do with reversing the deal Duncan made — that’s an interesting thought! And I totally agree about Duncan being the one to blame and not Kyle.

• Jamie Dutton

Duncan doesn’t even have the excuse of Hell King parentage, either. So just because you happen to have demonic dna, doesn’t mean you are automatically the Evilest thing to come out since skinny jeans and the Biebs!

• Two of the most evilest things to be created on this planet

• Ba Đạt Trần

Oh my god, Biebs. Evil can’t even be used to describe that person anymore.

• davefragments

A very mixed up teen with no limits.
There is a time in life when we realize that all the limits and all the “no’s” made us better.

• silibub

Yeah, despite my utter disdain for Bieber and his behavior, I think it’s important to recognize that fame and the entertainment industry basically built him up to bring him down. He never had the chance to be a “normal” kid and learn that there are lines, and consequences for crossing them.

• Adam Black

He has a mother.

She could have EVER, sent him to real schools.

She could have parented him the last 5 years instead of just cashing in and letting him work , and do as he pleases.

He was a youtube star, before he was hollywood star

• SofiaT

I’d say all the people around him are Evil.
He’s just a dumb-ass teenager with too much money, too much freedom and nobody to smack him up the head and say it the way it is.

• I would agree with this. Apparently his father was there helping him with this latest stunt.

• SofiaT

I don’t even wanna know what his latest stunt was. *sigh*

• It’s all anyone can talk about here. 😐

• My condolences!

• Well not HERE, here, but it’s all over the dang media.

But I shall take that sympathy.

• *Standing Ovation*
Lindsay Lohan
etc… etc…. etc…
It’s so stupid it’s heart breaking.

• Guest

I don’t believe it’s the money and the fame that are the problem. Just as there are evil rich and evil famous, there are also the decent rich and the decent famous. It is arrogance that’s his problem. He somehow thinks that he’s above all else, that he can never, EVER be wrong. It is arrogance and self-entitled elitism that’s so stinky about him.

Like how that nice tumblr post I once read put it, I don’t hate him because he’s rich and famous. I hate him because he’s a horrible person.

• Since it was frotting and not a handjob, for me they had sex.
Naked genitals rubbing against eachother till orgasm counts as sex by definition. If you focus only on penetrations there will be some who will have an active sex life but die a virgin 😉

• Steven K.

• Steven K.

If being totally naked with someone, one on top of the other, pressing bodies into the other, while rubbing each other’s hardened copulatory organs against one another to the point where an extremely violent orgasm is induced, isn’t sex, then I’m not sure what is. It may not be “penetrative sex”, and Kyle may still have his “ANAL virginity” intact, but I still say that was a definite sexual act. Of course my definition of sex is rather liberal. To me, if something involves someone stimulating another’s genitals, especially to the point of orgasm, that’s a sexual act. A hand-job would count as well.

• Steven K.

But I do agree with you that Kyle is innocent – i.e., blameless – in regard to that deal. He was used unwillingly and it was not his choice or his fault and Duncan is pretty much totally to blame for anything negative that happened.

• We’ve talked about it a lot. And we’ve all basically agreed to disagree on the wording. The lexicon of sex is different for every individual.

I do think we would all agree on ‘TRAUMA’ though.

If someone drugged and immobilized your daughter, chained her to a slap and took her somewhere terrifying, even if they didn’t have intercourse. I think every single person here would agree that it was an inexcusable violation of human spirit.

So IMHO opinion, we all left the wording of sex to each of us, and agreed that Kyle has every right to FEEL violated and then to kick some butt and set things right. 🙂 Go! Kyle!

• Steven K.

• Klaus

The purity test (anyone remember the purity test?) defines sex as ‘genetical-genetical contact leading to orgasm’. Which makes me very “pure”, BTW. I have never has sex! By this definition it Kyle and Duncan did have sex.

• Adam Black

thats some sexy DNA tight right there…or is that smexy Dna?

• Klaus

• Steven K.

He’s teasing you because you wrote “genetical” rather than “genital”. Don’t worry though – I think everyone knew what you meant.

• Adam Black

Its a malapropism

you spelled genital genetial ( like a hybrid of genetic and gentital … ) and the meanings are also related

• stickfigurefairytales

Okay, I’ve got to get to bed. Goodnight everybody!

• Oh good grief Alex… what was the perfect thing you, Adam and Veronica could have done to make this entire emotional transition more real? This is just about fricking perfect. Thank you all… YET again.

Spooky is just perfect. That last joke had more bite and less “hey buddy” to it. Spooky knows it’s time to stop this. Dude, leave that off your personals profile. Perfect… Kyle moaning that sex opens the gate to hell and Spooky’s last joke hits the nail on the head. Sex & Hell… don’t go there. Just perfect. Better yet, he turns off the Spookmeister goof vibe like a switch. Instant OFF.

I don’t think there IS a better thing Spooky could have said.

“I get that you’re wanting me to judge you.” And he drops that question right back in Kyle’s lap. It’s really what Spooky has been doing for the last few pages. Just reminding Kyle who he REALLY is. Gay… whatever? Son of Laampros… whatever? Bad date… puhleeze… whatever? He keeps handing the end of the world right back with humor and then delivers the unavoidable question.

Kyle, if you could do anything, RIGHT NOW, what would you do?

Not, how do you feel. How’s your boo boo. Not feeling sorry for you. Even if that’s entirely reasonable. Even, if I understand why you want in that hole to die, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO! Wow. He MAKES Kyle really think it through.

Kyle, if you could do anything RIGHT NOW, what would you do?

He says it without pulling any punches. No jokes and no false sympathy. Right this moment he forces Kyle to DEFINE HIMSELF!

Alex, I’m so impressed with this page. Not only the way Spooky gets Kyle to change his view of himself, but that hard unavoidable look. Spooky makes it Kyle’s decision. Not Paul’s or Spooky’s or Mitch’s, The Commander’s or Tsunami. KYLE’S! It is pure awesome.

Spooky is the man. (Now, you’re 100% sure he’s not gay? Just checking. LOL.)

I also love that this page is a pure physical reversal on the last one. On 18 Paul surprises his best friend with HIS anger… it’s not a bit what you expect and the page/scene was very intimate between Kyle and Paul, with a sly Spooky in the background.

This page/scene is the opposite in the best way. Kyle and Spooky are very much in each other’s faces, with a pretty solid Paul seen just once in the background. My take on Paul’s expression is that it’s nothing like Spooky’s was, but he’s absolutely approving of Spooky bringing the hammer down and helping get Kyle back on track.

The difference in Kyle’s expression between panel’s 6 and 8 is perfect. One despairing and the next we see a glimmer of the old kick-ass. Just a hint, but enough to give us hope. These two are so good for Kyle right now. Kyle IS getting the pain out. As you said in your post, no it’s not all OUT forever, emotion doesn’t work that way. Trauma doesn’t work that way.

Yet Kyle is starting to get his feet under him, with some real help, and it will get better every day.

Alex, Adam and Veronica… Thank you all once again for a big step forward and another darn cliff-hanger (well what is out boy going to say??) that still doesn’t feel like the wrong sort of cliff hanger.

I’ll do my best to wait. Is tomorrow Wednesday yet? Thanks all.

• Jamie Dutton

How do you keep saying the right things, Chris? I’ve had the same thoughts but can’t seem to ever put it in words like you do! Thank you for saying it for me though.

• I know right! He always figures out the page perfectly. Makes me wanna throw muffins at him. I’d say hate him, but that’s just impossible, so I’ll settle for the throwing of muffins…

NO WAIT!

What is it they do with really good stage performances? Throw shoes? I shall throw shoes at him! (Two birds one stone!)

• You like you shoes. I think I’ll be safe. Heh heh heh. 🙂

• I think I have some old jodphor boots. 😛

• *chris exits stage left… fast!*

• But it’s a good thing!! And I do it out of love!!

• Sapfo

why do it get a 50 shades moment here?
AJ, you frighten me o.o

• I no longer have any whips, so it’s all good. 😀

• It’s the CAPE I tells ya. She used to be a gentle muffin carrying smiley face and now look at her.

WOW! She’s total kick ass.

• Who knew a piece of red cloth could have such a profound effect (affect?) on a person!

• stickfigurefairytales

Well, it theoretically has a major effect on a bull! (Even though I’m pretty sure the whole “red makes bulls angry” thing isn’t actually true.)

• It’s a power color. Who knows what would have happened if it had been blue or green or yellow!!

*It’s my cape, mine, my own, my precious*

• HA!

It’s the evil cape-of-power! I knew it. And it’s already twisting AJ’s mind with it’s dark forces.

RUN EVERYONE. Admiral Jane is on her way to becoming the DARK MOD!

• SofiaT

Don’t worry, Chris.

In darkest day, in darkest night, no evil shall escape my sight.

• *strokes cape lovingly*

One cape to rule them all… Mwahahahahahaha!!

• *whispers* I think my point is made…

• He’s just jealous, precious. He wants a cape for himself, precious. He wants to steal you, precious! *glares at Chris*

• Jamie Dutton

I can only hope she uses it for good. I might have to be more careful who I give cape avatars to from here on out, lol.

• Randy Patton

“No capes!” ~ Edna Mode

• YangYueLan

Another reason why I like this comic: people write FREAKING ESSAYS for it. I dont think my last English paper was this long! Good thought proses and well written!!

• Our community here is very special. It’s one of the things that makes me feel like one of the luckiest creators in the world.

• silibub

Excellently and exuberantly put as always! If I ever put out a comic or some kind of work with a comments section, I hope I have a reader like you who really analyzes and gets at the heart of what’s happening in any given scene.

• And you say I have a way with words. Well, I love YOUR posts, and almost feel like nothing else needs to be said. You say things perfectly <3
Kyle really has found the best pair of friends. They have different ways of approcahing things, from their personality, but the way Paul and Spooky compliment eah other is just the best.

Sometimes, nothing beats the 'family' you chose yourself rather than the one you were born with .. in this case that is very literal.

• And right there you say to a gay man the perfect words…

“Sometimes, nothing beats the ‘family’ you choose yourself rather than the one you were born with… in this case that is very literal.”

• Elrohir

An incredibly brilliant 6 year old once told me:
“I think there are two kinds of families; family by blood and family by heart.”
Yes there are. and I have no question which applies here.
Beautiful job again Alex, Adam and Veronica. Enthralling…just enthralling.
And Chris manages to illuminate corners and provide even more grist for the mill again. I have to say that the discussion group here is an awesome additional facet to the storyline. Full marks to you all and many thanks.

• Thank you, Elrohir! Glad you’re here with us. 🙂

• stickfigurefairytales

What an awesome and insightful six-year-old!

• Elrohir

Yeah, altogether a remarkable person who has grown into an equally remarkable young man teaching HS English.
Sometimes I think it takes a child’s soul to see through the fog and shrouds of adult confusion and uncertainty and find the truth we all used to know ourselves.
Certainly, the clarity and simplicity of his statement has stuck with me for 18 years now. And it still rings true.

• Eve

I bet he’s an amazing teacher.

• stickfigurefairytales

Me too!

• Eve

That’s a beautiful line. It eases my heartstrings. “Sometimes, nothing beats the ‘family’ you chose yourself rather than the one you were born with .. in this case that is very literal.”

• A real pleasure to read your thoughts, Christopher. As always. 🙂

• fujoshifanatic

Awesome analysis of this page! I swear the comments section is just as much a pleasure to read as the comic itself, which is very rare to say about even the most popular webcomics out there. It’s a credit to you, Alex, Adam and Veronica, that you attract such thoughtful, insightful and articulate readers. 🙂

• Randy Patton

Great comment.

• joncarllewis

What he said. Can I vote Christopher up more than once?

• If we could do that, his up-votes would be INSANE.

I think there would be people that would compete just to see who could give him the most up-votes…..

• Eve

I’d upvote that to hell and back.

• SofiaT

So, I guess I’m the only one who read “personals profile” and thought Spooky meant Facebook, huh? The light-bulb moment was when I read Alex’s note.

Dabade dabada.

• I read it more as his resume for some reason (reading comprehension if has failed me tonight). And all I could think of was, well, yeah. Don’t want to put that out there. Then I read Alex’s note and o.O so re read it and went: OH!

• You know there’s been so much mention of the exact term “personals profile.” I wonder if it’s that for most of us who are on all kinds of different sites, they all ask for some sort of ‘profile’.

So I thought ‘Personals Profile’ perfectly implied some sort of ‘dating site’ you know? Like ‘’ or any of those you see on TV such as ‘religious-mingle’ (actually funny for a son of a King of Hell… but never-mind).

In which case Spooky is exactly right about using it specifically in his joke.

Although, I totally agree with @fujoshifanatic:disqus (I think), who said somewhere above (making me laugh out loud and snort my coffee) (total-paraphrase) That on the internet there is someone who would read that, in a dating profile, and think: “HELL-GASM? THAT’S THE MAN FOR ME!” HA!

• HA! Oh I’m sure there is someone who would be into the hell-gasm.

For me, I just mis-read it. Probably reading it too fast and I thought it was another word altogether until I read Alex’s note. 😐

• Xalun K

Poor Kyle, his guilt is just eating him up. Kyle, baby – punishment, self flagellation, whatever you want to call it, isn’t what you need right now. Let your friends support you and love you.

Aaaaand, now that I’m done talking to a fictional character like he’s real, I hope Spooky manages to get through to him since it’s pretty apparent Paul has his SRS BSNS face on.

In other news my dog is fine but my laptop video card died so I’ve been sans computer for a couple weeks now. Netflix has been my best friend lately, lol. *sigh* I’ve only just remembered my disqus password. Blah.

• stickfigurefairytales

I’m glad your dog’s okay! Sorry about your computer, though.

• Amazing how quick a little knowledge can change your self views..

Demon dude has been in his life for a couple hours. That’s it. All the difference that knowledge does, but one (albeit HUGE) revelation from Laampy and Kyle forgets all the good things he’s done; Now he’s the prince of hell. Instantly on the road to evil.

Yeah, you tell otherwise him, Spooky. Or rather, let him tell himself that.

*Wants to Gibbs smack Kyle* I’m gonna laugh my ass off if Spooky ask him if it changed Luke Skyewalker. If Kyle doesn’t get that comparison, he clearly should be Gibbs smacked for not having seen the movie ;-p

• I’m getting the chills.. of the good kind, every time I look at panel 3.

What is it about a guy scowling that can make him look so damn hot? .. and I primarily mean Kyle here, btw. Oh my~

Add it with the last panel (now Spooky being serious and smart) and I get this tingly feeling >.>

• silibub

Haha, it’s funny how a lot of guys do that jaw thing when they’re pissed off.

• SofiaT

Lickable jaw, I call it.

The testosterone in the air may have something to do with the hotness as well -although you have to use your imagination to smell testosterone on a comic page.

Good thing we’re an imaginative bunch here XD

EDIT: It was the lickable jaw that pushed me over the edge… oh yes.

• SofiaT

• Jamie Dutton

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one wanting to lick his jaw ><;

• Denise Cruz

XDDDD Not at all, honey! Believe me! XDD

• Alex, once again you kill me in the comments and I come back to it… and crack up…

“Casting judgment on his friends—clearly one of Spooky’s most favoritest things in the whole world to do…”

I don’t think it’s easy to make Spooky do things he doesn’t want to do, and Kyle’s learning that, but quick. HA. 🙂

• CH

But SpookyJokes make the world go round! How can they possibly fail?

• Sapfo

I do love the last panel. That is one Spooky you don´t want to mess with.

I think that you can tell that Spooky is the oldest of them. Although he was happy and might seaem to take thing a little bit to easier, and joke about it. He also have a very serious side. He senses the mood and he quickly put himself into what Kyle needs.
If Kyle needs to be encouraged when Spooky does it. If Kyle need to laugh, then he will do that too. Spooky also gives Kyle what he needs but do not understand that he needs. In this case Spooky make Kyle face the facts.

It will be real fun to do an analysis of the whole scene once it is finished. Alex you are doing a good job with the storytelling.

And Veronica, Adam you make me belive in Spooky as a person. Good job!

• Kate G

My birthday is next week y’all!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO! Okay, it’s next Friday, technically. Young Protectors on my birthday! Kind of.

I always admire how the Adam and Veronica manage to mesh their skills. The physical emotions always match the coloring (don’t know if any of you people notice this.) Kyle always flushes at the neck, ears and jawline/cheek area when his emotions get intense which, if you are super pale, you know all about this little problem. *raises hand* Flyboy got pale went he learned about the Annihilator on the ride there, Fluke darkened the tiniest bit when Kyle was all, “I’ll understand if all y’all want to hate me and all that,” and Spooky ashens when he’s being dead serious. I think that’s so amazing as most comic artists totally forget those tiny nuances.

Just something I appreciate. You know, along with Alex’s witty writing skills.

• bronakopdin

anyone agreeing with me that Kyle’s abs look even more smexy in his suit then they looked when he was naked? :p

and I always knew Spooky was awesome… I don’t even need to praise him anymore ’cause I bet you guys know what I mean 🙂

Talking about more cards, I’d love one of the last panel, Akex! 😀

• Cman65

I want to kick sliver fox daddy ARSE

• Sethy

+100 awesome points for Spooky
All of his facial expressions on this page are brilliant
And how he appeals to Kyle while keeping his cool…

He’s definitely in the running for best character in the comic

• Adam Black

Please, please, let Mitch be in the Doorway, and have overheard that soliloquy .

• joncarllewis

That would be interesting. Why?

• Adam Black

Aside form saving repeating this conversation, it seems to be foreshadowed.

Also i have no working tv ( no digital antennae )

• Steven K.

I wouldn’t mind if that turned out to be so.

• Adam Black

@stevenklimecky:disqus I am going to hold you to that, when Mitch is standing in the Doorway in angry tears

• Steven K.

Well, it would be bittersweet – knowing that Kyle gave himself to some evil fuck instead of to him. But maybe after that hellish experience, Kyle will be even more grateful to Mitch for his true love and affection. Would just be easier for Kyle to “make things up” to him if he were a little older so we wouldn’t have all those pesky legal issues.

• Adam Black

But it will turn the drama quotient up to 11 if/when Mitch hears Kyke confessing to “betraying the team” opening a gateway to hell , and staring the Apocalypse…

They need to fly them back, still…

• Psst! @chrisdangerfield:disqus I completely forgot to tell you..
I had a dream thursday morning. I don’t remember anything that lead up to this, but suddently I got a flash of a TYP page – as in I read a future page.

It was Kyle hugging and kissing a certain someone of the guys being there with him at the factory, and it was very hot (now I’ll let your imagination take over from here). I’m certainly not giving up on Kyle finding love <3

It was so hot that my brain reacted in joy, 'reading' a hot page like that in my dream, and sadly it woke me up instantly.
I wished I could go back to sleep, and catch the dream again, but it was 8mins before my alarm clock would go off.. so I was left feeling something between 'Aww yeaah' and 'Damnit!' *lol*

• Been there Danish love….sometimes we wake up at the worst possible moments.

• Thank you kindly, Danish, for the excellent future update… but you’re as secretive as Alex about WHO that person is… 🙂

Oh, and I totally agree about waking at the exact wrong time. Dang!

Thanks again, and please keep us informed about any future future dreams you might have. Excellent!

• SofiaT

Update for Alex: My BIL texted me, he just finished the Artifice book I had gotten him for Christmas. He loved it!

He’ll give me a full review later this afternoon when we talk on the phone 🙂

• Yay! I’m really happy he enjoyed it! Thank you very much for sharing his reaction—that’s fun to hear! 😀

(BTW, is BIL brother-in-law?)

• SofiaT

Yes, my brother in law 🙂

I gave it to him a month ago but he’s finishing medical school now and he was extra busy with an assignment, he sat down to read it as soon as he found a bit of time.

• Johndar

Spooks is wise beyond his years. I’m liking him more and more.

• fujoshifanatic

I love how Spooky can gently cut through Kyle’s feelings of self-pity to get at the heart of the matter. Well done Spooky! There is much wisdom behind all that snarky humor.

As for his knowledge of personals, now that would would be an OKCupid profile that I would love to answer:

Funny laid-back dude looking for equally chill dudette who can appreciate my sense of humor. I’m big on community service–it’s a plus if you are too. Not religious per se, but open to alternative spiritualities. I’m straight, but not narrow, so I’m open to having guy friends of all persuasions, but only the right girls will get the benefits. Hit me up if you want to hang!

• Nasro Subari

Well, “I’m so hot, sex with me is like a journey to Hell and back” really might not be the best idea for an entry in Kyle’s profile…

• fujoshifanatic

LOL, I bet you there are at least a couple of people out there who would find that totally irresistible. Big, strange world it is out there, you know. 😛

• Heh. I can tell already you’d get one of those “Someone has just rated your 4 or 5 stars!” emails from OK Cupid from a certain Mr. Jones…

Well done. 🙂

• Librarican

Remind me when I’m ready to plunge into online dating to have you write my profile… That is excellent!

• TwilightDreamer

man, nice call Spooky….seems to know exactly what Kyle needs to hear.
That was kind of a scary shot of Kyle in the third panel, though perfectly understandable.
I’m curious to see exactly how Kyle answers.

• Toli Bera

“… I would write a folk song!”
“Heeeyyyy little bird… I remember yoooooou.”

let’s see who gets it.

• stickfigurefairytales

To be honest, this reminds me of an episode of MST3K, but I don’t think that’s the reference.

• Toli Bera

Girl in gold boots.

• stickfigurefairytales

Yay!!! I was right! (I *love* MST3K, by the way.)

• Toli Bera

yay! well I hope I helped in some small way to keep your gold boots movin’

• Cris

oh just marry spooky, kyle

• vessto

I think I like Spooky more and more. 😀

• “I have sex and it opens a freaking gateway to hell!”
Awesome line is awesome.

• Kit the Coyote

Despite Spooky’s advise I think that makes a great profile entry!

• tokiohcom

Kyle BB. *sadface*

• Elin Gregory

Trying to catch up here after an absence. Awesome writing Alex and the art is a good match for it. I feel an afternoon of re-reading coming on.

• Amanda

Spooky = best responses ever.

• Pikinanou

Everyone already said what I think of this page and their characters, so I’m just going to upvote every single comments down there 🙂
The bad thing about awesome webcomics is that next update never comes fast enough to my liking haha

• WarGoddess

“Kick the Annihilator’s ass so hard he’ll still feel it the rest of his immortal life.” That’s what i’d say. 😀

• Klaus

Spooky is obviously expecting something like “undo what I have done” or “prevent the opening of the gate.”

• ME24601

“What do you want to do right now?”
“Well I still really want to have sex…”

• Kiri

It’s suspiciously like Kyle wants them to judge him, so he can justify how bad he feels about himself. Much respect for Spooky – he really does know how to handle this.

• stickfigurefairytales

I think you’re exactly right.

• Sai

Spooky kind of annoyed me before, but now that he’s showing his more serious side I’m likin’ him.

• Wayne Lunkwitz

Let’s go have coffee, and plan the demise of the annihilator……then, Oh God! I’m still horny!

• Gaz Hawkins

I thought he meant personals profile as in the team’s profiles…. but maybe he did mean online profiles……’s always the friend you expect the least who keeps a level head and help you through the crisis. and who knows, maybe he wants Kyle to have sex with him… hey, they got to show kyle it was NOT the sex but the spell Duncan cast that opened the gateway.
at the very least, Kyle can say for sure the Earth will move 🙂

• Klaus

I did not catch it either, before reading Alex’ intro text. It might be a good idea to change it to “dating profile” in the printed book.

• joncarllewis

Has Spooky had training as a counselor? He’s better than my real one!

• joncarllewis

OK. Almost.
But Spooky seems wise beyond his years. I’ve often thought that mindfulness training was for Baby Boomers!

• joncarllewis

I’d love to see it animated.

• John

Good question spooky

Seriously; anti-aging thing? Spooky really does seem to have something…

I can accept he’s just a wise and insightful person (dealing with demons probably does that to a person) but his knowledge of demons seems unusually deep. He speaks with a confidance and authority (and maturity) beyond his years.

I’m really beggining to wonder if thats because he IS beyond his years. Is he in the YP to keep on eye on Alex maybe? That’s pure speculation on my part, but hey: Thats what this is for 😀

• Denise Cruz

I’d done these same speculations before, so, of course I agree with you… although I had assumed that he ‘d keep an eye over his team mates. But, now that you mentioned it… he could, indeed, be watching Alex closer… XD

What do you think about it, Alex?! Spooky may be spying your work… He IS a naughty boy, isn’t he?! XD

• Adam Irving

And this is what friends are for!

• Denise Cruz

Spooky’s way to take care of that situation is… wonderful! So very mature!! ^v^ Very nice!

And Kyle is still freaking out… Poor thing!
Who could blame him?! Too many things over one single young head…

It’s funny how things happened… Paul, who was so ‘in control’ at first, now don’t even know what to do, what to say…
Let’s hope he doesn’t start freaking out, too. (Although, I don’t really believe he will.)

Panels 1,3 and 6 are my favorites here! Wonderful artworks! 😀 The different shades of color on their skins are unbelievable!
And, that visual clash between Kyle and Spooky is something to die for… beautiful thing!

• Amanda

Kyle sweetie, the older you get the more you’re going to realize that sex opening a gateway to hell is the least of your concerns.
There are going to be boyfriends the don’t have jobs, but insist on eating at the most expensive places.
There are going to be boyfriends who have loser stoner friends that show up at your house and never leave.
There’s going to be that one boyfriend who convinces you to go out with him one more time after breaking up with him, and proceeds to attempt to kidnap you.
There will be boyfriends that try to talk you into threesomes with your friends, who fart in the car with you, and hide when you make plans with them.
So gateway to hell! Ha, that’s not even the tip of the iceberg.

• SofiaT

I’m afraid to ask about the “attempt to kidnap you” part.

• Amanda

Lets just say I no longer let friends talk me into giving an ex a second chance. Also the reason I couldn’t listen to Creedence Clearwater Revival for years without the Heebie Jeebies!

• stickfigurefairytales

Holy shit. I’m so glad you’re okay.

• purplefoxglove

Oh, Spooky, I thought you’d never – wait. You’re talking to Kyle. Never

He really has a point here – Kyle is what he did and which choices he made all his life, not what he was manipulated and deceived into ONCE (or twice, if you’re counting the Hong Kong date). He is what he is going to do and the choices he is going to make in the future. And for his heritage? So far, it affected his sex life – here he went celibate for YEARS to prevent others to come to harm – and generally gave him fire powers – and he chose to join The Young Protectors and save people with it. No ambitions to rule the world, go on a killing spree, rob banks, or toast puppies. Sorry, Kyle. You still have to work a lot on your Prince-From-Hell reputation.

Anyway, I know it has been said many times, but I have to say it again: on a scale from 0 (as awesome as yesterday’s coffee leftover) to 10 (super hyper extra awesome), Spooky ranks a clear 12. Does he do counseling? Did he study psychology?
Or, rather, did Alex study psychology? First Marven, now Spooky…they’re both pretty good at what they do, although their intentions could hardly be any more different. Has to come from somewhere, doesn’t it..?

• Okay, Spooky is cool. That’s EXACTLY the right thing to say.

• purplefoxglove

Actually…the sex didn’t open the gateway to hell. The Annihilator did. The sex only made the date a literally hot one.

• Steven K.

Well, the sex along with the spell that Anni recited/incanted. I don’t think either on its own would have done the trick. The sex was part of the ritual – to get Kyle to release the needed energy and the right kind of energy, etc.

• purplefoxglove

I know, but maybe 100 cans of spinach would have done the trick for Duncan, too? Kyle is completely ignoring that a spell was needed to open the gate. No spell, no portal, only a lot of fireworks. Well, that’s not really an “only”, but when he was twelve, he didn’t open a gateway to hell, so there was hardly any chance he could so much as guess what was going to happen.

I think Duncan doesn’t like spinach, just like socks.

• Steven K.

Very true with that point concerning Kyle and the spell. I totally agree.

• Perverzak

I hope its something like ‘kick some Annihilator ass to the moon and back’, cause he deserves that. I can hear the inspirational music already! amazing talk!

• AliceVenturi

Spooky has a wisdom that’s older than his twenty years. Add to that his charming insouciance and his positive outlook on life, and he comes across as a pretty well grounded, generally terrific human being. He just reeks of competence. I like that in a person, y’know? Kyle would do well to listen him.

While I think most of us can empathize with Kyle’s desire to take on all the blame for the situation, Spooky (and Fluke!) are providing rock-steady support and guidance back to the reality of hard facts uncolored by internal shame and presuppositions of blame. We all need friends like that at some point in our lives. Though, admittedly, few of us are ever going to be the focal points for a doorway to Hell. Still.

• La Belle Gigi

Damn, Spooky…. are you a Bodhisattva or something?

• Samurai Jack

You kind of get the feeling that Spooky has been down this road and had to face a similar choice himself. Perhaps Kyle isn’t the only child from another dimension with an evil parent…

• Galderman

THIS!! This is why Spooky is Awesome! Magic is a difficult thing to master, and in order to master it you have to study a LOT. And with that study you learn important things like how even though you have made mistakes there is ALWAYS a way to fix them. Way to go Spooky! Empower Kyle to become the best!

• Denise Cruz

.Your comment made me think about how great would be if TYP was turned into an anime/film… It would certainly be a HUGE challenge, once every character does things ‘very difficult’ to a normal human being to. (No way!) But, no doubt it would be really amazing to see. Well… that’s just my restless mind traveling again.. XD

• Onomatopoeia

The correct answer is “Kick ass and chew bubblegum. And I’m all out of bubblegum.”

• Klaus

Funny, but seriously Spooky is depending om him saying sometyhing heroic. “Kick ass” og anything meaning “get revenge” are not very heroic. “Prevent the demon invasion”, “undo what I have done” or similar is needed for Spooky to convince him that he is actually the hero he always thought he was-

• Megan Staples

“Kiss you” would be my answer. Of course, I’m a chick….

• Holly

UGH I forgot yesterday was Friday. Someone seriously needs to tweet me on camping nights.

Anyway, I LOVE Spooky. He is pointing out the obvious thing, Kyle IS NOT evil. Kyle isn’t evil because he doesn’t want to be evil. Just like Adam in Good Omens. Yes, Kyle is hell spawn, but he doesn’t want to end the world. Angels fall Kyle, so the opposite is true, too. Change your Stars! They are just balls of flaming gas, so I think you can handle it.

• O.O Quick, someone fix Holly’s programming. STAT!! Forgetting update days… I… I feel faint!

Also…. Balls of Flaming Gas is the name of my next Alt Metal band.

• Holly

I think I’m just a little overwhelmed. Apparently I need to meet with the Dean of my university upon my reapplication to school. So I’m kind of out of my head.

Also, can I be in your band? I will play the theramin.

• It’s a good thing it’s attached to your body. 🙂 Well good thoughts to you. And I’ll try to remember to tweet about it being update day!

You so can be! It really needs a good theramin player.

• Holly

I am petrified. I mean, how does one even have that conversation.

AND YAY! AND ALSO YAY!

• Do you have any inkling what it’s about, I mean why the Dean needs to talk with you?

• Holly

Did I not tell you why I’m not in school this year?

• If you did, *eep* I can’t remember. I know you had some health issues.

• Holly

A lot of things happened. Basically I was placed on Mandatory Withdrawl. So I need to see the Dean to explain what went wrong. As well as why it won’t happen again.

• Indeed a difficult conversation and definitely my thoughts are with you.

• Holly

Thanks. So how long do you think it will take for Spooky to get through to Kyle?

• Well, I’m thinking two more pages. At least I hope.

• Holly

I am excited!

• Me too! I so very much want to know what happens next.

• stickfigurefairytales

Mine too (echoing AJ’s comment). Good luck, Holly!

• Steven K.

Theramin! LOVE that. If you can actually play one of those, that’s a rare ability these days. Probably was part of the original programing – to be able to play electronic-gadget instruments.

• Holly

Yeah, I sadly don’t own one, though. My grandfather or someone had one when I was little. If I could get my hands on one I think I’d be okay…

• Adam Black

Can you do the Dr who theme?

• Holly

No. Someday though.

• Adam Black

how long have you played?

• stickfigurefairytales

I love Good Omens so much!!

• Klaus

I don’t usually laugh out loud when reading. I did that quite a lot when reading Good Omens.

• stickfigurefairytales

Me too!

• Steven K.

Aww – I really like that comment and those sentiments. Tearing up a little at that (in a good way for once).

• Holly

• And RT’ing Alex’ messages about a new page isn’t enough? 😉
Or do you need a pre-message warning.

• Sapfo

Would that not be cheating in the virgin hunt?
On Twitter: “Biiip! 15 minutes to the new page. 15 minutes to the new page. Biiip!”

• Holly

Well yes, I am not really that upset about missing the virgin, I am sad about missing camping.

So I just wanted someone to tweet @ me so that I get a text reminding me that it’s camping time. 😀

• Adam Black

ODD, I just noticed Kyle in Panel one , is in a Spiderman web-shooting pose.

Am i the only one who caught that?

• Holly

No he isn’t. Webshooting is Middle and Ring, not Ring and Pinky. But it looks that way for sure. I had to go check myself.

• Steven K.

I can’t wait till we get to see Kyle shooting some sticky white stuff under much happier circumstances (though there is that nagging question of whether it is incinerated as soon as it is released, if flames really do emerge from that particular orifice at the same time – hmmmm….we may never know).

• Soubi

Steven…I laughed so hard.

• Jamie Dutton

LOL, dangit, Steven! *couch cough* You made me choke on my popcorn ><;

• Adam Black

Just accept it, he cums rocketfuel

• Denise Cruz

LOL We just need to find out who’d like to see the moon more closely… XD

Although, Spooky knows so much about demons, he probably knows how not being burned to death or sent to the moon, if he decide to have sex with one of them…

• Adam Black

reading this on Dashboard ( with no context ) ,
I was puzzling over what this idiom:
“like to see the moon more closely”
( and “sent to the moon” ) could possibly mean.

You should define it, permanently .

• Denise Cruz

Sorry! My native language is Portuguese. Sometimes I do struggle a lot to say things understandably in English. (I only had one and a half year of classes). ^v^

The “who would like to see the moon more closely” was a joke. I meant someone who would want to do ‘that’ with our sweet redhead should possibly be prepared to end up orbiting the moon. (Rocket Fuel, remember? Just a joke.)

The ‘sent to the moon’ was also a reference to that rocket thing.

Once Kyle would shoot rocket fuel, the person who was with him could/would end up being a rocket full of fuel. —(Jeez! I cant’ believe what I’m saying here! XD @stevenklimecky:disqus this is entirely your fault! I blame YOU! XD)— Which is the closest place to land a rocket, outside the Earth?! The MOON!! (another little joke with the same base of speculation)

Is it more understandable, now?
If it’s not, just let me know and I’ll try explain it again, ok?!
Somethings make a lot of sense in Portuguese, but no so much in English…

Thanks. Have a nice day! 😉

• Adam Black

Denise Cruz ,

perhaps you have not used the Disqus Dashboard to respond to comments.

I said
“reading this on Dashboard ( with no context ) ,
I was puzzling over what this idiom:”

That means I couldnt see what comment you were responding to —until I pressed the “context” button.
( then I understood fine )

My points stands. Its funny with no context.

Those idioms in English could use a Non-honeymooners repurposeing.

Now, I am picturing @stevenklimecky:disqus on Kyles chest as they rocket around the moon. It’s Steves Fault.

• Denise Cruz

AGREED! It’s @stevenklimecky:disqus fault! **blaming Steven too!! Again!** XDDD
OH! I love that image you pictured! Adorable! XD
We’re the most insane people on Earth (and/or Moon), we blame Steven and give him such a gift! XDD

BANG!! LOL

• Sapfo

His body yes, but not his fingers. o.o

• Adam Black

Reading this without context, i was like “WHOA”,

Are these instructions to Spooky?
“His body yes, but not his fingers. o.o”

Really then?
“His hand should be bent back a little more”
I guess this is why you are the nurse

…”and then fingers should be in a “rock sign”.”

and What’s this technique called — or for?

Rock-Sign … Spiderman?… mary jane’s glove?

• Sapfo

The rock sign, which also means Love ^_^

As for instructions for Spooky? Yes obviously. All he do is talk and talk. Spooky needs to get more hands on to get Kyle to understand 😉

• Adam Black

he had him naked, he had his chance

• Sapfo

Darn, the instructions came to late. Well maybe next time.

• Adam Black

go send a kyle a “catcher” tshirt for next time

• Adam Black

They are both clueless.

thats a a near explicit invitation to perform a sex, right there.

If Kyle was naked , and Spooky had his hands on him, then the son of satan might rub some clues together.

• Sapfo

Maybe they should do it like in Tripping over you 😉

• Adam Black

wait.. is that a comic?

• Sapfo
• Soubi

I hope his answer is to kick ass and save the world!!!

• Denise Cruz

Same answer, in different words, here: “Stop those freaking bastards!”

• KennyKenKen

So um.. In the first panel, was it only me who thought of a Mean Girls reference? ._.

“I have sex and it opens a freaking GATEWAY TO HELL.”

Don’t have sex, Because you will..”.open up a gate to hell. xD

• Vincent

One wish? Anything he wants at that very moment? The answer is obvious. “Manwich”.

• So.. I’ve been looking a bit on earlier pages, and I came across a comment I made way back in the begninning on Chap.1, page 11:

“Master manipulator on the hunt and Kyle is too young or rather unexperienced to realize it yet. The perfect ‘prey’.

Anni, you player, did you set the fire scenario scene up so you could stand there looking handsome just for Kyle?
Someone has plans *kekeke*”

^I really should look at my old comments more. Uhm.. called it! 😉

Now, another thing that hit me again and I can’t remember if I’ve talked about before. It sounds familiar so either I’ve debated it or just thought it..

The scene in Hong Kong that Duncan set up to trick Kyle – it ended up giving him a scare too which could have made him more determined to finish the evil plan, even though he didn’t like what he had to do to Kyle.

I think that power dampener thing Hunter and Killer brought with them was the final straw. It made Duncan really feel how it would be to grow old and powerless. He lost control of the events and got his ass kicked. It was Kyle who had to save him.
Now if there’s anything that can scare a man who is used to being powerful and almost indestructible, it’s that. ANY regrets that could have made him not do it was removed that day.

This was the single most important moment in the comic that sealed Kyle’s fate and the later events.

• Sapfo

You have the right idea. We should go back and reread the whole comic and all of the past comments also.
That was fun to read. 😀

Yes, I can agree with you on the HongKong Date

• What started me going back through old comments was you telling someone how many V’s you had. Thought I should finally count mine then, since I hadn’t till now xD
It’s 23 – 19 or 20 since started camping here, rest from earlier.
What I also noticed was how often in the ‘old days’ pages I’m one of the first handfull of commenters on pages, even back when I didn’t hunt. Damn, all those lost opportunities before this became a game we have ^_^

• Sapfo

Ah those where the days.
Yes, I was also back (not checking for virgins, just trying to find my first comment here) I did see myself very far up sometimes. But I know that back then I did not have the skill needed to take a virgin on TYP. As you know, it is not only to press the next button here. It took me a few weeks before I realized this when I started chasing virgins here.

Btw Danish. I have an ethical dilemma. The choice between food or yarn for crocheting.
I do not have some of the colors I need to do some of the things that I would like to try to do.

• Yup, took me a while to learn that as well. It’s different than TH 🙂
Hmm.. look in your cupboards and then buy the food that is just needed until next payday (which is soon) and then spent the rest on yarn 😉

• Sapfo

That is what I did. XD
I still don´t have one color that I really need. But I can get quiet far without it. So it can wait a week before I need it.

• Adam Black

• SofiaT

(virgins) 🙂

• Adam Black

• SofiaT

I often read old comments too, it’s funny in retrospect -some of then are dead on and some guesses are so off…

• A2MOM

I like the friendship/sibling dynamic between these three very much. They have given Kyle just the right amounts of scolding and support, like brother’s would. I hope scolding isn’t too strong a word here.

Artistically, the facial expressions are perfect. Kyle goes through anger, self-loathing and resolve all in the course of 8 panels. He really grows up right before our eyes.

Just curious, does Spooky have a ‘real’ name?

• stickfigurefairytales

I think his real name is Spooky Jones, at least as far as we’ve seen so far.

• Tina

Hello guys! Long time no speak! I’ve found the last pages to be really interesting. I’m loving how Alex is handling Kyle’s character. He’s not all out over dramatic wanting to crawl into a hole and die but he’s not ignoring the issue either. That’s a very hard balance to achieve so well done.

Also, if this was posted somewhere, forgive me I’ve been very busy with work XD
When should we start expecting the Kickstarter stuff to start rolling out? :3

• The KS stuff should be ready sometimes mid/last spring if I got the latest update via mail read correct. Alex’ first goal was march -said during the KS – but sending the comic to print will take a little longer than first hoped, so ..late april/may perhaps (my guess).
We will be told in the mails when Alex knows more. Mails are being sent to the email you signed up for KS with. If you don’t use that one much, maybe go to the KS site and change it to your primary mail, so you don’t miss important info 🙂

• Tina

My email got all screwed up so I wasn’t sure if I missed something or not. Okay that’s cool! Thanks for the update! :3

• Hey Tina! If there is trouble with the email address you use on Kickstarter, please make sure you’re able to get that fixed right away. Without you getting the Kickstarter Shipping Survey via that email address, I won’t be able to send you any of your physical rewards, so that’s an absolute top-priority!

And I’ll be sending out a new Kickstarter update next weekend with a clearer idea of the timeline of delivery of things. 🙂

Thank you for your backing!

• Amanda

Delivery. Short of childbirth its my favorite word.

• Tina

Ah its fixed now. But I’ll keep an eye on the page as well just in case.

• Spooky’s really showing his mature, intelligent side, which I really like. He’s right. Kyle wants to be reprimanded, wants his friends to hate him; if he feels badly enough, it’ll absolve him somehow. Great page.

• Toli Bera

he wants the guilt to be burned either into him, or off of him through his friend’s anger. it’s a common coping mechanism. “The Flagellation” technique, so named for the priests who would go from town to town to self-punish themselves in an attempt to stop the plague during the medieval and renaissance period. If he can be punished externally and suffer for his supposed transgressions, then the situation will be resolved “properly”.

I would like to register an official complaint with the artists Woolfson, DeKraker and Gandini (herewith referred to as “ADG”) in regards to the current YOUNG PROTECTORS page (Chapter-3, Page-19, Panel-6).

Please direct your attention to Panel-6, denoting one “Kyle” expressing a desire to ‘…crawl in a hole and die’. Now, if I could further direct everyone’s attention to his hair. The hair being the focus of my current distress.

PLEASE NOTE: The following historical actions can be verified in previous TYP pages. The character of Kyle, and his hair, in Panel-6 is the same character who was hand carried in a series of assumably windy jumps, in the arms of a super villain, to an assumably windy mountain top hideaway. At this point they drink wine and proceeded to hurriedly divest themselves of clothing (shirts are pulled over heads, etc… (this becomes pertinent in relation to “Kyle’s” hair). At this point the central character under discussion, one “Kyle” (who, for the purposes of this commentary, will continue to be called “Kyle”) jumps in bed and presumably reaches under the covers to remove his underwear. He then resurfaces, to drop said underwear provocatively at the bedside. At this point, the super villain joins “Kyle” in the bed and serious kissing, hugging and “thingie smushing” (technical term: copyright Alex Woolfson, AWC, 2014) ensues. Suddenly, noted villain slams his hand down ‘forcibly’ on “Kyle” and utters the words of a spell that paralyzes “Kyle” and magically chains him to the bed. More words shortly transport them both to a hell-like location, possibly hotter and more humid than the previous windy mountain-top retreat (again, ‘humidity’ may be pertinent in relation to hair quality). In hell, “Kyle” makes an almost successful effort to break free and then unexpectedly burns the super villain. The characters Laampros and the villain have words. Laampros (King of Hell) proceeds to (Chapter-2, Page-45, Panel-1)

STROKE “Kyle’s” hair and kiss his forehead. Then, upon Laampros’ departure, “Kyle” and the villain are returned to the windy mountain-top hideaway, whereupon the villain monologues and departs. “Kyle” then curls up, makes a phone call, and waits for his colleagues to arrive.

The focus of my complaint is that I simply cannot stop staring at the noted panel. Indeed the entire page has proven unacceptably fascinating, but “Kyle’s” hair in that panel is positively diabolical. Never on my best hair-day, in my entire life, has my hair looked remotely… THAT GOOD. Never in my entire life, have I dated a man with hair that looked… THAT GOOD. So, as a devoted gay male audience member, I’d like to register my distress and allocate the blame for his impossibly hypnotic hair, indeed his good looks, his adorable expression, and his overall fascinating desirability on the artists ‘ADG’ for this dastardly deed.

I would like to request a future Panel wherein “Kyle” has messy hair in recompense.

I have shaved my head in protest of this situation and plan to keep my hair extremely short until the above messy-hair panel occurs. Thank you all for your attention to this important matter.

Yours sincerely,
Christopher Dangerfield

*chris returns to stare at noted panel*

• Chris, I refuse to believe you shaved your head in the same way I refuse to believe in the whole “waddling” incident.

• Well, actually I do keep it pretty short. So that might have been kind of weeny as a threat, but what can I say? Clearly, I need to buy another magnet to rotate! 😀

• *ahem* I’d like to draw your attention to Article 3 Paragraph 6 in the subsection HAIR of the Superhero manual: So You Want To Be A Superhero.

It clearly states that: superhero (man or woman) hair must at all times be perfectly styled without exception (unless said hair is shaved off by supervillain see Article 4 Paragraph 1, So your head was shaved by a supervillain). Whether in wind, fire, rain, hail, sleet, humidity, or sweat, it must always remain as styled or return to said style immediately or a superhero cannot be called a superhero and will duly be made fun of.

• Oh, well said MOD,

Yes… now… is this section/subsection before or after the S-spine, boob & buttocks enhanced, clause requiring all female super heroines to be impossibly flexible and sexily attired at all times?

(innocently) Just checking to see which manual we’re working from?

• That section is currently under review as it has received many many many complaints as sexist and anatomically impossible.

• EyeDontNo

Just one of the many sites that has attempted to question the manual you are quoting.

And here is a more in-depth analysis of the questionable material.

• So AWESOME!!

And Jim C Hines to boot!

• Awesome. Thank you, EyeDon’tNo,

Hadn’t seen the first one, but someone had shared the second hysterical Jim Hines one.

Just as an interesting question. I’m having a good chuckle in my post over how desirable AA&V are able to make our YP boys (and yet they’re still fully respectable, while being desirable to both sexes), and what man doesn’t like identifying with a hot-looking kick-ass dude? That’s me in my next life, right? Not the maybe-gay-geek who’s butt was kicked in school.

Film, comic, book-cover. It’s a truth. How can the same not be true for women?

Now at least three of the book covers in the Jim C. Hines selection are kick-ass (oh yes strong sexily attired and posed) women. Tattoos, holding guns or swords etc… strong (but highly sexy women).

Seems like it’s true for men, but can women be sexy, strong, kick-ass and clearly marketable? Or, is it different for men and women. I’ve been talking to people in different genres about this for years.

I remember the days when the sci-fi and supernatural book sections were one-shelf. Now days, there are rows and rows of these very books Hines makes fun of (mostly romances) written by women for an audience that is predominantly women.

A few are good. Some are just bad romance novels with a werewolf with no refractory period thrown in for sex. However, the formula is plucky strong young heroine, she is very sexy, classically learning the be powerful (the old Joseph Campbell model) and interacting with impossibly sexy men/creatures/what-have you.

So, that begs the question… those covers are for books NOT intending (or really succeeding) in attracting the attention of a teen-male audience. These books are NOT read (much) by teen boys or even adult men.

So, if their vast audience is known to intentionally be women. And marketing says those women would like to identify with that image of the sexy plucky shot-gun wielding tattoo’d young lady on the cover… what is the alternative?

It’s only there because vast numbers of women are buying those books.

I see this as a different issue than Sofia’s post about the constant marketing of physically impossible sexpot portrayals to 15 year old boys. Feel free to disagree, but please help me understand why you do.

Most of these cover images show women who are physically quite possible and other women buy them, attracted by that cover. If I put my grandmother in a barcalounger holding a Winchester 30-30 on the cover… I suspect sales might drop.

Okay I’ll stop blabbing, but if anyone has any thoughts on how these genres and issues differ (or do they?), please feel free to contribute.

It’s just interesting stuff.

Like I said, Tom Hiddleston as Loki or my Grandfather holding a magic staff cut from Sapfo’s world-tree. Which one gets your movie dollar? 🙂

• stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, I think it’s something of a multi-layered issue. There is definitely a substantial quantity of sci-fi/supernatural/paranormal literature out there that is marketed to and consumed overwhelmingly by women. But what I find interesting about the covers on the Jim Hines page is that most if not all of them are still presented through the male gaze.

(see this site for a good explanation of what the male gaze is:)

In four out of the six covers (on the Jim Hines page), the woman’s gaze is either not facing the viewer or does so indirectly (in the case of Magic to the Bone). This positions the woman as the object of a gaze rather than the agent. However, this is curious when you consider that these are books marketed primarily towards a heterosexual female audience. I think that this could be the product of larger cultural biases regarding the visual representation of women in general, which continue to present them as sexual objects even in situations where they are ostensibly being framed as more powerful. Perhaps women are expected to identify with these images due to the fact that we are inundated with similar examples as cultural role models in mass media? I could not say for sure, but I think it makes a fascinating opportunity for further study.

Shifting the subject slightly, I came across an interesting article about the difference in covers for books marketed towards women and those marketed to men, as well as for male versus female authors. If anybody’s interested, you can find it here:

• Well said, Sticky!

I saw that post about the marketing of covers several months ago and it really is interesting how books are markets towards the different genders.

• stickfigurefairytales

Aw, thanks!

• Just curious what you would rather be called? Or is Sticky okay?

• stickfigurefairytales

Yep, that’s fine! 😀

• Just wanted to make certain. 🙂

• stickfigurefairytales

Thanks for asking!

• stickfigurefairytales — what an awesome post.

Thank you, this is a great continuation of a discussion that fascinates me, as much as it may seem confrontational for others. Your line, “Hmm, I think it’s something of a multi-layered issue.” Is rather a huge under-statement.

The ‘gaze’ article referenced is fantastic, I love the idea of the gaze. I also like that some of the statements feel like they reference back to its 1975 origins, although others still feel quite current. Which was my very original point about the publishing world, which shares issues and then also has different ones than film and advertising. A LOT has changed about who is buying what, and for what reasons from 1975. The truly modern VFX super hero film didn’t even exist more a decade ago due to the vast expansion in technology.

I loved this quote re advertising:

“The message though was always the same: buy the product, get the girl; or buy the product to get to be like the girl so you can get your man” in other words, “‘Buy’ the image, ‘get’ the woman”

Now if anyone trawls the male model sites on something like Tumblr you see that, that quote is absolutely applicable to gay and non-gay men in the same fashion.

“The message though (is) always the same: buy the product, get the MAN; or buy the product to get to be like the MAN so you can get your PERSON” in other words, “‘Buy’ the image, ‘get’ the PERSON.”

Honestly, I’m really agreeing and thinking about all the ideas you are presenting. I was having a very interesting conversation today with a friend about something similar to your referenced ‘Gaze’. She was talking about the very female issue of not being able to avoid unwanted attention in public spaces, if you are confronted basically by an unmannered man who assumes a right to be in your space in some threatening fashion.

I said, that is often similar for gay men, particularly those who can not disguise the fact they are gay because they may not align with all the standard definitions of masculinity (i.e. Sapho’s wonderful sharing of the MAN-UP VIDEO):

If you do not naturally display norms of accepted masculinity, you can quickly feel unsafe when alone and feel you are being targeted for being “un-masculine (a fag)”. So, scary stuff for both demographics.

So in both cases you have instances in an infinite variety, where people and image-makers either want to attract attention (THE GAZE) or avoid attention (THE GAZE).

I’m definitely going to read your Huffington Post article.

Thank you again for this lovely interesting comment.

• stickfigurefairytales

Thank *you* for the wonderful reply, Chris! I definitely agree with you about the parts on advertising and how it commodifies both sex and potential partners. And I really like your point about how the concept of the gaze interacts with cultural gender norms and the scrutiny and even violence that gay men often face if they do not “correctly” perform the masculine role/identity.

(I am trying so hard right now not to slip into complete academic jargon about gender performativity and feminist and queer theory. I think I was already seriously pushing the envelope by using the word “commodifies” earlier. I just really, really enjoy talking about this stuff.)

• I do also, like this chat. You can find me by name and the same avatar on

Loki as played by Tom Hiddleston, or as played by Sir Patrick Stewart. (Loki’s costumes never revealed much neck down, as I recall). This particular instance age isn’t the factor, but the desirable appearance is. Now if Loki was played by Stellan Skarsgård

(Who actually played Erik Selvig in the movie) it would be a sales dropper… Most wouldn’t believe that Stellan could pull off the carefree prankster of Loki.
As far as which would get my movie-dollar… In their original roles I would pay after seeing Thor or Thor&Loki, but I wouldn’t if I only saw Erik on the poster. If I only saw Anthony Hopkins as Odin I would be interested, mainly as I would be confused in which direction the director had taken the story if Odin was the selling point.
(I just realized I’m going for the story, not the drool factor. Maybe I’m not the one to answer your question!)

• Actually, EyeDontNo, I think all those points are pertinent. We are the consumers who, through many forms, are influenced by the imagery shown us, buy (or not) the product and send marketing departments off to coerce creatives to make the books, comics, yaoi, manga, movies, etc… the way they think certain demographics will buy them… right or wrong.

In all honesty, I just used Loki for certain friends who enjoy him, Chris Hemsworth is a much more obvious example.

I just find it interesting what grabs our attention and motivates us in pursuing our entertainment. I’m a deep and meaningful guy… so it’s obviously Kyle’s hair, neck and lick-able jaw currently have my attention.

And yet, I still plan to respect him in the morning.

And, actually as silly as that sounds, that is part of the deal, for me, Alex’s desire to create a gay hero, the equal in character, drama and quality to any non-queer comic-hero I’ve grown up with. Well, I’ve never had that, and I think it’s great.

Of course, (tots machure tone of voice) it helps that the cover is going to be kick-ass!

• Would some fresh font-work, by Alex’s vast marketing staff, and a temp. mock-up using this older Stellan Skarsgård image, help us make any better decisions? Just checking? 🙂

*Bow my head in sorrow and memory*
Rest in peace Jeffs Hair.

But he is cute in what ever hairstyle he have.

• Yes he is. 🙂

• EyeDontNo

I read your post when it first went up 16 hours ago… and just now figured out which Jeff you were talking about.
But think of the wonderful scalp massages that Deacon can give Jeff as he studies the growth patterns of hair.

• Okay was going to shut up, but NOPE.

I thought Jeff was very HOT with that shaved head at the end. If I were DEACON, I’d learn to use some clippers and rub that fuzzy head… a lot.

Oh……….. TMI huh?…………

• Denise Cruz

XDDD ‘Fuzzy’ head?!? XDD

I was, also, going to shut up, but… well, you know! XD

What does that ‘TMI’ mean?! (Sorry! I tried to restrain myself. I swear I did… but, NOPE! XD)

• TMI = Too Much Information. 🙂

• Denise Cruz

Thanks, AJ! Sometimes I do get lost with these abbreviations… 🙂

• I know what you mean! There is one that keeps tripping me up. SMH. Which means Shake My Head. I’m not certain why that needs an abbreviation.

Of course there is FTW which apparently means For The Win, but meant something else entirely when I was growing up.

• Denise Cruz

I did love those beautiful locks!.. *Bows along and sighs*

• Steven K.

Maybe that goes along with having super-powers – one of the usually-overlooked powers that goes along with every super-hero’s or super-villain’s other powers is hair that automatically goes back to perfect styling. As further evidence of this theory, we have Mitch’s also-totally-adorable hair, even after flying miles through the air pushing and steering a large metal object, and suddenly swooping (or “swooshing”, if he’s gay) down to catch it after he loses control of it for a moment, then back to more flying – AND – Duncan’s otherwise-impossibly stable coiffure.

• Denise Cruz

I’d love having such a power! Pretty useful!

• stickfigurefairytales

Which also explains how the vast majority of female superheroes (and villains) can have long hair that isn’t tied back yet never inconveniently gets in their eyes.

• Denise Cruz

Well, Chris… Allow me to say that that panel is, indeed, one of my favorites in this page… and… that hair is really something, isn’t?! But, if you have a neck as glorious as that one, believe me, your hair will never be a problem for anyone else… XD

• Denise! Why did you have to bring up that (indeed glorious) neck? This new problem is your fault. Honestly, I may have had less trouble when he was naked for 70 pages. LOL.

chris goes to stare at Kyle’s neck now… no hair… no neck… no… ARG.

• Denise Cruz

Because suffering in group is more fun, of course! XD

Seriously… You did noticed that neck before, didn’t you?!
I can’t believe someone wouldn’t… SO gloriously strong, broad AND beautiful!! That doesn’t look like a boy’s neck. That’s a man’s neck! One for the records! 😀
You can blame me, if you want to, but we’re all having the same problem, honey!
The best thing I can do for you, trying to making up for it, is wish you WONDERFUL dreams, tonight… 😉 LOL

*Still staring at DAT NECK**

• Sapfo

Yes I do agree. Mr Adam and Ms Veronica just keep on giving us this hair fan-servic.
But maybe it is a plot point. Kyle is Laampros son, being is hell is like the best thing for his hair.

Todays trivia: my IPad have now autocorrected me when i wrote Laampros. My dear pad knows me so well XD

• iDevices can learn??

• Sapfo

Yes. After just typing Laa the name Laampros appers. And with camping I only need to type in a C XD

• I’ve only just been integrated with my iPhone. Haven’t had much time fussing with such things. I’ll need to teach it a few things. 😀

• Denise Cruz

So… that’s why you always get those “V’s”, week after week, unh?!
I bet Holly has one of those, too! And DWolf! O.O

• Denise, you have the new iVirgin 9000 right? Sapfo will fill you in…

• Denise Cruz

I never got one of those “V’s”, Chris…
I think you did. Didn’t you?! Which one is yours? iAssume?! ^v^ Or maybe iThought?!
Sapfo is not allowed to do that, btw! 🙂

• AJ, you have the new iMod 9000 right? You and Sofia? Keeps you directly in touch with all new TYP posts? Has really helpful features.

Autopost sorting into convenient to-do tab categories. Convenient buttons for: Insta-Delete, DWA (discuss with Alex), Praise-worthy (with auto-praise choices), Auto-upvote & (this may be on on Sofia’s model only, Auto ‘:P’).

Golly if you don’t have this time saving device, I’d talk to your admin right away! Just trying to help. *waves* TA!

• Why don’t I have this app? I need this app!!

• SofiaT

I believe that Kyle is suffering from the same disease as a Mr. Pattinson. While I haven’t followed the young gentleman’s hair-scapades personally, I do have teenage cousins and the subject of his perfect, always disheveled, hair, has been mentioned more than once.

So, yeah, if Kyle’s hair has the “windswept” effect on a permanent basis, I don’t see how a little roll on the bed and trip in hell could make much difference.
If anything, it would make it look even better. 😛

• Steven K.

Yeah – that thought crossed my mind as well – maybe more-messy hair would make him even more adorable (if that’s possible).

• Steven K.

You know I’ve waxed poetic (and more than a little hot-and-bothered) over Kyle’s hair (and Mitch’s) many a time!!!
And yes – it (still) is very sexy in the panels of this page – I have been thinking so quite often since it was posted.

• Steven K.

And it is rather hypnotic – and his expressions are indeed adorable, and “good” looks is a understatement of several orders of magnitude. But given those latter 2 qualities, I think Kyle would still be adorably cute with messy or mussed hair – maybe even unbearably more so.

• Klaus

I got the answer for that. Hell is not moist at all. That explains everything, right?

• Curator

He’s Hellspawn, Hellspawn have magical perfect hair 😀

• b3nc0

Here’s my answer to the ever-perfect super? hairdo:

• Ahahahahaha very funny. This is Kyle’s new product line.

HellHairCare! Because you deserve the very best in beauty products. Look just like a Prince of Hell and use HellHairCare!

(Could some lovely MOD add all the appropriate copyright info? Honestly I’m exhausted and my hair is too short… you know… in protest and I don’t want a letter from AW’s law firm.) XD

I am soon of for my first day at New Job. Nervous and hope that the train will arrive on time.

A question to @alexwoolfson:disqus, have you ever put up a lineart page somewhere. I love to see the process from lineart to completely finished page.

(it would be even more fun if I got to see the process from script to lineart to finished page)

Have fun today, you all! ^_^

• Good luck with the new job, Sapfo!!

• SofiaT

Good luck, Sapfo! 🙂

• Good Luck and have fun. ^_^

• Go get ’em Sapfo!

• I haven’t yet posted progress pages of our art, but it might be something I’ll include in the book if there’s room.

Good luck for your first day! 😀

• Alex, progress pages in the book would be a treat, especially if there was anyway to share how the three of you iterate. I can’t quite picture: the script to Adam to Veronica, etc..? Is that mostly a talk and a flow, or is there lots of back and forth to get to the posted page? Just snoopy, but fun book-snoopy stuff.

• Hmm. There are indeed many iterations before we wind up with the finished, colored page with much back-and-forth. I’m trying to think of a good way to show that. I’ll continue to think on that.

• Jamie Dutton

Hand puppets are always fun 🙂

• Sapfo

Thank you all of you!

First day was great. They gave us breakfast because it was my first day. And my new boss called me Lisa…. my name is not Lisa but how cares. It was only once. ^_^

Alex, as I said, it would be something interesting and fun to see.

• Denise Cruz

Good lucky, Sapfo! I hope they are great to you (Your co-workers). Have a nice day!

• stickfigurefairytales

Best of luck, Sapfo!

• Stubbylegs

Re. the earlier hair debate- just once I wouldn’t mind seeing what Kyle looks like when he first wakes up in the morning. Then again, if having sex and getting all burned up doesn’t muss up his hair, I doubt a night of sleep wil,l do that either.

• Denise Cruz

Very good point. Makes sense.

• @alexwoolfson:disqus, one more snoopy question for your week. Just curious, but does our adding additional mid-week pages change anything about them? Or, is it literally like moving up the following Saturday’s page to Wednesday?

Oh, and is it Wednesday yet?

• I actually answer that question in the FAQ (although, in fairness, I just added the answer for that recently), but the answer is that having bonus pages changes nothing about the story—not the number of pages, not the pace of the panels on a particular page, nothing—it really just moves up the Saturday page to Wednesday.

That said, so far, in my experience, I think having consistent bonus pages does have the following effects:

1) I believe it makes this comic more accessible. For a character-driven story like this, it allows me to explore the character-based plot events (how friends handle adversity, how Kyle himself deals on an emotional level with the revelations/betrayal, etc.) in a webcomic format without delaying the action-based plot events a crazy amount of time.

(Although, I know for some, even three months of character-based plot developments is a lot more than they’d prefer—but imagine six months! 🙂 )

There are lots of reasons I’m grateful for those who donate, but this is a service that they are doing for this comic that I think makes a huge difference in the diversity of readership we have here.

2) It means at least double the workload each week. Which is a very good problem to have, but is a factor I now need to account for. With art of this level of quality and with our very intensive revision process, it takes this comic well out of “hobby-level” time commitment into “full-time job” time commitment.

3) It makes it possible for me to afford to work with professionals like Adam and Vero. Even though none of the bonus comic money winds up in my pockets (and doesn’t even fully cover the art costs), it does make it possible for me to pay a professional rate for the art of this comic. With my current financial situation, that wouldn’t be possible without this support. And it’s very important to me that this comic be just as high-quality as super-hero comics with straight main characters.

So, again, I’m very, very grateful for our strings of bonus pages. I’m able to make the comic of my dreams—and that wouldn’t be possible without the very generous support of readers like yourself.

So, thank you! 🙂

• Klaus

This comic is not the same quality as your typical super hero comic. It is considerably higher. Facial expressions and body language just right in practically every panel. Very detailed coloring. Adam and Veronica must use more time on this than the typical artist uses on the typical super hero comic.

• Yes, that’s true—they do spend more time on the art for this comic. And we do spend a lot of time making sure the facial expressions and body language are just right. Certainly more than most comics. Getting the “acting” right is a very high priority for me.

I’m glad you’re feeling it’s paying off. 🙂

• Jamie Dutton

I seem to repeat this a lot, but I don’t mind saying again that both Adam and Vero are worth EVERY STINKING PENNY!
They leave me speechless, drooling, and sometimes in tears with their amazing art!

• Frater Gymnos

Do you draw from a live model? How do you get so many great postures and POVs?

• I know Winona would often use her boyfriend as reference, but I don’t think Adam works like that. I’ll see if he can chime in. 🙂

• Hi Frater,

I usually rely on a combination of photos I’ve taken myself, photos and illustrations I’ve saved over the years in my reference files, a library of anatomy books, and a handy little anatomically-correct artists model I keep by my desk. Drawing from a live model isn’t really too practical while drawing comics pages, so I usually end up just taking photos of whoever’s around for anything tricky that I need reference for. 🙂

• Frater Gymnos

Thanks for the insights. I still stand amazed.

• dereule101

Very true – most superhero comics have some good art but the attention to detail here is exemplary.

• Denise Cruz

Interesting!.. I’ve just noticed… Spooky is the only one in the entire team that is completely covered, from top to bottom… (including a cap).

Even Commander shows a little bit of her body, wearing a just uniform…

Does Spooky have a tail or something? O.o

**Nope! I don’t think everyone has to show everything up, it was just a late perception that caught my attention…**

• *lol* This is like me shortly wondering if Spooky hid some kind on ‘3rd eye’ under the hat that activated when he used his powers xD

• Sapfo

Well he might be hiding the one-eyed snake 😉

• Denise Cruz

XDD First we got him a ‘3rd eye’… Now, we got him a tail…
Poor Spooky! What are we doing to him?! XDDD

• Jaden Levi

This is just too unrealistic. I have friends I love dearly. We closer than bros. They knew I was gay since I was 12. But if one of us did what Kyle did we would not react so nonchalantly or so sickly sweet. And they seem more shocked it was the “ancient” Annihilator that Kyle slept with rather than ending the world basically?

• dereule101

Here’s my take on the scene.
People who constantly manage crises (a group of young superheroes, for instance) approach charged situations in a task-focused way. His team members, maybe Spooky more than Paul, seem to be trying to get the situation under control first. They found him, assessed him (Spooky did the magic thing), dressed him, and they are trying to bring him down from his panic so that they can get him out of there and back to safety. Is it smart for a fireman to run into a burning house and start chastising the panicked homeowner because he forgot a pot on the stove and took a nap? They go in, assess the situation, address it, and get it under control. These are his best friends, but they are also professionals. I don’t think it’s unrealistic for them to prioritize getting Kyle into a clearer frame of mind before they freak out or start planning for Armageddon.

• Jaden Levi

I don’t buy that. They are not professionals. As was pointed out they are a fledgling team of kids who have not faced any real villains because as Annihilator said…even villains don’t mess with “kids”. Up until they got there it was believable. They acted like kids would. Realistically. Like the original Young Avengers…

And if they are SO CLOSE ending the world can be all but shrugged off…then why hasn’t Kyle been more open about himself. I love the comic I do. But I just think it is too far fetched in terms of the portrayal of behavior. Of course I expect some people to get angry with me for saying that (as evidenced by the down votes) but…there it is.

PS – The building wasn’t burning anymore and Kyle could just absorb the flames as he did in the beginning chapter anyway. Lol. I get the analogy. But still disagree. These kids were anything but professionally in their portrayal before. They are young heroes and LEARNING.

• dereule101

Hey, like I said – just my interpretation. I thought I’d share it for contrast. As for whether or not they’re professionals, I don’t really think that’s a matter of question. Sure some have more experience than the others, but saving people is what they do. They’re The Young Protectors. They have resources. Budgets. Uniforms. Training. At some point it was also mentioned that Commander trained with Navy Seals; Spooky does his own freelance magical work, and was highly sought after before he joined the Young Protectors. These things, by definition, make them professionals. Now, whether or not their professionalism or heroism is up to par in your view…well that’s a different thing — an opinion you’re of course entitled to, but still only an opinion. I think that some of your downvotes probably came not from commenters being averse to people having different opinions, but averse to people stating their opinions as superceding fact.

• Jaden Levi

How did I state it as fact? Are people so unbelievably *insert adjective* that they cannot tell that comments here are by their very nature subjective and thus an OPINION. Or do they need everything explicitly spelled out and can’t recognize the implicit. I realize this isn’t exactly highbrow literature here but I at least thought people could respect a differing OPINION. Well…whatever. I know better now.

• dereule101

Might want to slow your roll, buddy – the combative, supercillious tone is neither cute nor welcome. I’ll be disengaging now, TTFE.

• Jaden Levi

It might be all of those things. But it is out and honest. Not hypocritically covered with the thinnest veneer of decency. And I could care less if it is welcome. Yes. Ta ta, forever.

• Jaden Levi

Oh and…one last thing. There’s something to be said when Disqus users feel they must set their comment history as private…

• dereule101

Ad hominem. Cute.

• Jaden Levi

Well the very first statement I made, SofiaT who might be some kind of MOD here said fit into their acceptable comment policy…yet here you are saying it was dripping with condescension. Riiiiiiiiiight.

• Hey guys, lets take a step back, a deep breath, and bow to each other. This isn’t doing anyone any good. Thanks guys.

• Okay I get this feeling sometimes, when a story I really like (especially the impossible fantastic type) rubs up against my real life, so I think I get how you feel comparing your “bros” and their reactions to a group like this that you’re following.

Just to be difficult though, try this (I do this sometimes if I can). We’re talking about how our best bros would react to being told we caused the end of the world. Okay, you and I can’t really end the world, so let’s imagine the end of our world… this is the worst thing I can think of for me right now… you can insert your own feck-up, whatever works.

You go out on date with a guy your “bros” don’t like. Whatever, you go. On the way home, you two are drunk-high-whatever. YOU are responsible. You hit a car with a family by accident, you total your car, kill some of their kids, kill your date… black out.

Now you wakeup in jail. Your airbag worked. You lived. You’re responsible. You’re alone, you’re bruised Your clothes are totally trashed when car caught fire. They used jaws of life to get you out in time. It was a freak thing, but you lived and you’re are seriously fecked up, crying, bloody, stressed beyond anything, probably still covered in bits of your now dead date. You were drunk-high and killed people (kids).

Now, in jail, your “bro’s” arrive with bail money and clothes and whatever. Dude, you are scum. So, in all honesty (these are your real bros) what do they do first? You’re a total freaked out crying blood-covered END OF THE WORLD mess!

1) Do your ‘bros’ start yelling at you for being scum first (’cause you are!)?

2) Do they get you cleaned up, hospital?, calmed down, bailed out, sobered up? I don’t know… whatever it takes?

I think that’s the question. When you are freaking out, what do your best friends in the world do first. I don’t know if that’s just confusing, but that’s how I look at it. If they don’t get Kyle, dressed, de-magicked, and get his head on straight… what else can he do to help?

Hey just some more thoughts. If they were my friends there is only one answer, but that’s just me.

• Steven K.

That was a bit … intense. Get your point, of course, but that just about sounds worse than the POTENTIAl for the “apocalypse” that Kyle are worrying about.

• dereule101

Definitely intense! I felt like I was reading a chapter in the Laura Bush autobiography. But the point was made, for sure.

• Jaden Levi

Yes. That analogy makes so much sense. Because that scenario is in any way comparable with ending the world, right? If my best friend signed the death warrant for 90% of the world’s population, consigned my family and other loved ones who live in the American continent to slavery and probably demonic rule because demons always find a way to reneg on a deal…even unwittingly, my first reaction would not be like that. Hell if they ran over one person, not even my family, my first reaction wouldn’t be all that chummy buds forever.

That is just not how emotionally charged situations work. They don’t follow that calm, cool and collected sequence. What could be more emotionally charged a situation than the world’s impending doom, when panic and looting etc. breaks out and brings out the worst in each of us, Spooky maybe, he always looks like he’s weeded up and high. But the next.

I have seen other places were fans take any criticism to heart, and worse, the artists/writers themselves. But jeez. Any psychologist or behaviorist will back what I say. This situation flies in the face of realism.

PS – Diamonds in the rough doesn’t count as professionalism. Universities chase down certain applicants and athletes to TRAIN/TUTOR them. Does that mean they enter the program as professionals. Or even graduate as professionals? Please.

PPS – Don’t worry. This will be the last anyone here hears from me. I won’t waste my time with people determined to misunderstand me due to an overactive ego.

• Jaden Levi

I should have known to expect hyper-egotism, unrealistic writing, cliches abounding, low IQs and crazy fanatics in an amateur comic whose title is a cheap ripoff of The Young Avengers. I just thought artists would do well to accept their mistakes and learn how to improve. But…well…when you’re catering to people whose minds are stuck at this level then your work has to remain at the Saturday morning cartoon stage without depth.

And Goodbye! 🙂

• SofiaT

Jaden, you’re welcome to your opinions just as anyone else here. We often have debates and disagreements (like the one we see here) but we keep it civil. As far as I can see, the people who have responded to you here were polite and tried to get their point across in a nice way and without insulting your opinion.

Calling people names however, even in a general (including the whole of the fanbase and not someone in particular) way is not exactly civil though and goes against our comments policy. (Which you can find here:

Alex is actually very open to criticism and civil and well-meaning criticism is always accepted here. It may be unpopular with some of the fans who don’t share those thoughts, but it is accepted and welcome by both Alex and the majority of the commenters –if it’s done in a way that is not insulting to the creator and/or the fanbase but respects both. While your original comment was within those parameters, I’m afraid this response is not, and I see evidence of that same lack of respect in some of your replies below as well.

I’m sorry you feel you don’t wish to contribute to the discussion any more, but if you believe you can do it in a way that respects the comments policy and the other commenters, please know you’re welcome to it, criticism or not.

• DC

Step away from the brownies. Remember you are getting ‘larger’ from all the books you are falling into an climbing out of, lol 😉

• Ahahahahahah… that is so true. The damn books do keep filling me up! Thanks for the reminder.

• Thanks for the reminder, DC. A friend had previously sent me this quote and I loved it and just found it with its picture again. So very very true.

You know, there are too many good cooks on this Group and clearly not enough super-hero dietitians. I’ll have to be careful or I’ll camp too much and end up a Jabba the Dangerfield… not pretty, not pretty at all. LOL.

• Simba

/mario music: campingcampingcamping…. campingcampingcamping…

• Jamie Dutton

Hello Campers, I brought cookies and hot tea cause it’s friggin snowing outside!
Btw I think the stupid Polar Vortex broke my weather app, cause it says it’s not supposed to snow til Thursday…lol, yeah take a look out my window and tell me that again! >:(

• I have mint brownies Jamie. I will have some tea please.

If the snow isn’t gone tomorrow when I wake up, I am going to walk around the property and take pictures.

• Jamie Dutton

Yay, brownies!

• DC

Brownies sound great. But I will continue drinking iced tea thanks. A pleasant 23 C/73 F here, more comfortable than the 43 C/ 109 F we had yesterday.

• Jamie Dutton

Wow, that sounds nice…it’s just been icky and cold for months here :p

• Steven K.

-32F windchills here in lower Michigan.

• …..just a little warmer and I start melting

• b3nc0

Hallo foreigners (I know it doesn’t mean anything as we’re ALL foreigner somewhere, still…)
Here, have some home-made Speculoos, ( ˘⌣˘)Ɔ
they’re from yesterday but fresh & crispy enough

• Jamie Dutton

I had to google it, but it looks yummy! I’ll trade you some oatmeal raisin or pumpkin snickerdoodles for some.

• b3nc0

‘T was my turn to google the snickerthingies… Are they here to counterbalance the healthy oatmeal cookies? ;°)

• Jamie Dutton

Of course 🙂 There can be no light without the dark

• SofiaT

Speculoos are nice, speculoospasta is even better! 😀
You’re Belgian?

• b3nc0

Yep, nobody’s perfect ;°)

• SofiaT

I have lots of Belgian friends (well, if “three” is a lot).
You guys know all about great chocolate, beer, biscuits and fries.
As close to perfect as it gets! 😉

• b3nc0

& in Liege (me hometown, here) there also are the bouquettes (said boo-ket) kinda like French crepes but thick as pancakes with raisin, apple or even bacon in them…
Sorry, here’s some tissue for the drool…

• Jamie Dutton

• Jamie Dutton

crap my ‘mm’ key got stuck. I had to get a bit rough with it ><;

• I had to look these up. YUM!

• SofiaT

Camping time!

• b3nc0

Welcome home Sofia ¨3

• SofiaT

Thank you, b3nc0!
It’s a battle to stay awake so looking forward to the new page 🙂

• b3nc0

Ain’t we all?
*giddying in his chair*

• Indeed Welcome home!

• SofiaT

Thank you 🙂

In the 4 hours I’ve been home, I managed to not go directly to bed but to empty my suitcase instead, do two loads of laundry, go to the supermarket, make lunch, vacuum, dust and change my bedsheets.

I finally had a shower and had something to eat, I was about to collapse. But I’m very proud of myself. Now I can enjoy camping with you guys!

• Wow! You really are Superwoman in disguise! I think I would have collapsed.

• SofiaT

I’m really, really tempted to go to sleep.
But I mustn’t. It’s only 2.40pm and if I sleep now I’ll wake up in the middle of the night -and I can’t afford to do that, I have work tomorrow. 🙁

• Yeah, there is that. The only way really to get back into the swing of things is to actually swing into things.

• Simba

I have an unhappy tummy… I may just have tea for dinner and go to sleep early. 🙁

• b3nc0

Oooww, poor kitty…
Do you think Doki’s mint cookies might help?

• stickfigurefairytales

Aw, I hope you feel better soon!

• Once again, Spooks has proven that he is an amazing person.

No just a friend. An amazing person.
Here’s why:
1. He has a sense of humor
2. He knows when to use it
3. He knows when to lose it
4. He isn’t judgmental when he could be
5. He cares, genuinely.

• b3nc0

Oh, so you think this place is suitable to talk about comics?

Yeah, he is, ain’t he?

• b3nc0

About the last panel, is it counseling time or wish granting time?

• For those that read EMR, themice has updated! And don’t forget that it is two pages. ^_^

For those that haven’t yet read EMR, you can begin reading the lovely drawn story here:

• mogoskier

So how long we will have to wait before Spooky make graver robber jokes, because with his sense of humor there going to be funny.

• Jamie Dutton

You mean instead of cradle robbing jokes?

• mogoskier

• silibub

It’s only a couple weeks into the semester and I’m already buried in work, but I can multitask enough to lurk here~

• b3nc0

Were you multitasking enough to provide your share of sweets, biscuits &/or beverage?
Jus’ kidding, don’t sweat it ;°)

• silibub

*digs around* I got uh…half a blueberry bagel and bottled water?

• Jamie Dutton

Don’t sweat it, silibub. Have some tea and cookies 🙂

• Jamie Dutton

I’ve been in a baking mood for the past week and a half. I’ve made 3 loaves of my favorite Oat quick bread, pumpkin cornbread, and various cookies. Must be the cold weather.

• Steven K.

Pumpkin cornbread sounds fantastic.

• Sapfo

I feel like I am going to do this camping on the run.

Anyone wants processed sour milk (filmjölk) with cinnamon?

• b3nc0

• b3nc0

I actually might be interested by the bagel! (could you fathom I never had one of those)

*grasps handful of speculoos*

• silibub

You haven’t? They’re interesting — I think the bread’s baked differently so the texture of a bagel is kinda…denser than ordinary bread? Good for a quick carb fix, haha!

• The dough is boiled first I believe for bagels.

• Sapfo

Yes, that is it.

• Oh good! I remembered something useful.

• Sapfo

Yay, for AJ! ^_^

• Yes yay for me!! 😀

• mogoskier

Shhhh… today was my first day back and I’m still in denial. Pleases don’t remind me of reality.

• b3nc0

Prince of Cats has updated!

• b3nc0

& this obscure comic new page is up ,too

• Sapfo
• stickfigurefairytales

So early!

• bronakopdin

and here I thought it’s not up yet since the “last” button brought me here instead, good thing you posted, dear 🙂

• Vinny Gothika

I shouldn’t laugh but omg that first line XD “I have sex and it opens a freaking gateway to hell.” I’m rollin lol

• Skittles 4ever

I am totally going to put that in every dating profile I ever get just for the hell of it. (<-lame puns)

• Vinny Gothika

that would be epic, and make possible matches go ‘wtf’ lol

• Superjenny

Kyle’s face in panel 3 had me laughing.

• Curt Clark

Spooky speaks truth and I love him for it. Poor Kyle; everything’s always the end of the world when you’re that age. Just…not that literally. Usually.
