The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 93

452 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 93

We had our seventy-seventh bonus page in a row on Wednesday, and y’all yet again tipped the donation bar below past its target on New Year’s Eve! That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, January 7th (page 94!), Wednesday, January 14th (page 96!), and Wednesday, January 21st (page 98!), there will be an additional bonus page (page 100!) on Wednesday, January 28th!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporter Saxon B. (who makes their 133rd generous donation to The Young Protectors!) for their generous donation over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to long-time friend of The Young Protectors Steven C. for their super-generous $25 donation, and also to long-time friend Kayleigh H. for their super-generous $43 donation! And this makes Steven’s third, and Kayleigh’s twelfth super-generous donations to this comic!

Superhero-strength hugs go out to long-time super-friend Christopher M. for their amazingly generous $78 donation, their thirty-third amazingly generous donation to this comic!

And finally, speed-force powered hugs and deeply grateful bows go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $100 donation, their 133rd stunningly generous donation to this comic! Thank you so, so much, Christopher!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Looks like pride might indeed cometh before the Fall. Especially if you’re a cocky super-villain. What will that mean for the Demon Stargate? How will The Annihilator respond? And will we someday get to read a sexy bonus comic featuring the minion closest to him? He’s kinda cute!

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

    • Congrats, Dave!

      • davefragments

        • Indeed… (invokes) “SPEED OF A CHEETAH!” Ummm that’s like a magic thing…

          • davefragments

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Very concise.

      • davefragments

I tried typing more but the fingers fumble so I hit enter. Then I tried typing “water, water, everywhere but not a drop to drink” and Disqus belched at me. Damn you guys are fast with those posts.

        • It’s the intention that counts!

          • davefragments

          • Well, you can lead a villain to water, but you can’t make him stand still. TRUTH.

    • Indeed damp, even.

  • Oh dear, ooh dear. Tricked :-p

  • Lots of water there…

  • davefragments

    everywhere water

  • Go Tsu!

  • stickfigurefairytales

It’s so great when smug people get abruptly deflated.

  • Not everything is about you, Mr. Duncanator!

  • Okay Alex, let’s make that Duncan/minion comic a real thing, eh? 😉 He IS cute…

Ooh tricky, tricky! Things falling apart all over the place!

    • Oh wow, Starr, Duncan falls for a minion, who’s destined for sacrifice… that’s not just good, that is SOAP OPERA GOOD. Tragical doomed lurve. Wow, good job.

@alexwoolfson:disqus — take note Starr has solved all your story problems right there. 😀

  • Tsunami packs one heck of a punch.

  • This page is amazing! Look at all the detail in water and everyone’s worried expression in that last panel, the arc of the water and the flames in the back to “balance” things out.

    Bravo Alex, Adam, and Veronica!

  • Saxon_Brenton

    Thaaat’s better.

  • davefragments

That’s a lot more water than on the previous page.
It’s the flow thing and if I thought about it could probably tell you hoc much water if I wanted to do work (flow in a tube, unit operations of Chem Eng 101)

  • stickfigurefairytales

This would be a good moment for Spooky to grab Duncan, since he’s distracted.

    • ….but Spooky has to wait for just the right moment to enter dramatically!!! He knows how important a good dramatic entrance is.

      • davefragments

        Yes, YES,

      • Lika a glomping hug… a good entrance is also important. Euphemisms be darned!

      • Well played 😉

    • This would be a good moment for Spooky to grab ME! (Wait, What? Did I say that in my out-loud voice?) Errrrrrrr……..

  • SofiaT

I hate to say it but… It’s not always about you, Duncan.

    • He hates it when you say that too. 😉

      • SofiaT

        I can imagine.
He does look good on that first panel though. Reaaaaal good.

    • davefragments

      My thoughts exactly.

    • No_One_Special

    • Oh My God… hearing that is like Armageddon, End of Days and the breaking of the seventh sign… all at once. WOW.

    • Jinks! 😛

    • Adam Black

      Crack in SZhip,
      Port to stern

  • davefragments

I think the circle of bones is going to fall.

  • Cydney Sabin

I doubt that last question will happen. A shame, really. He actually is cute.

    • stickfigurefairytales

We need to think up a name for Cute Minion.

      • Frank… he looks like a Frank to me…

        • I think maybe a Henry

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Derek, maybe?

          • Jeremy could work?

          • Oh fine… “Jeffrey Q. Barnstable Pennyfeather, Jr.”

          • LOL

          • Rupert Gregori Miderple Esq.

          • davefragments

He works at the law firm of “Skanks, Whores and Strumpets”

          • Okay…. now that sounds like a Tom Leher song. I don’t care what you say. 🙂

          • Samurai Jack

            Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves?

          • davefragments

Before I go to sleep, I’m going gift you a law firm for Mister Barnstable-Pennyfeather:

            Skimbleshanks, Pissypants, Brittlebrains, and Loosebowels

A better bunch of cheats and liars never existed.

          • Genius… backwoods bent lawyers if I ever hear of some! Great.

          • Klaus

Then there is the law firm Doolittle and Waite.

          • Dewey, Cheatum and Howe.

          • My series Dev::Projects has a law firm “Shyster, Shyster, Shyster, Carpetbagger, and Scalliwag, The Original Law Firm. Will Sue for Compensation”. Their receptionist is a bullethole-riddled mannequin and their wall of “Our Favorite Customers” features photos of the rear ends of ambulances. They have no sense of humor.

          • davefragments

            And for the really naughty:
The Firm of – Greed, Shit, Claw, and Delay

        • …..Andy

          • OMG I didn’t even think of that… XD I was thinking more PoC….

          • abu

          • I’m going to post that You Tube video of the voice actors making fun of this… just because…

          • lol, that kills me everytime! I love those guys…oh oh do you have the link to the dream scenes one where Onoda is the rice?

          • Yup! This is why I keep my tags organized now 😉 I was just watching these earlier today too…

          • davefragments

            Is that a game show?

          • lol those are the voice actors for Yowamushi Pedal, a sports anime

          • davefragments

They are funny. It’s a shame I don’t understand Japanese.

          • Eris, elder daughter of Nyx

            I vote for Andy!

      • Saxon_Brenton

Actually, a sick and twisted thought occurs… What you’re all trying to is guess what his name *was*.
If Spooky was guessing correctly, then in order to try to create a proper distraction the Priestess needed to get as many magic using ‘crazies’ and helper minions out doing as many magical workings as possible. In this hypothetical there weren’t enough card-carrying members of the minions union to get that job done, so Annihilator and the Priestess had to go recruiting – with mindwiping.
So, under other circumstances a totally random selection process would see Cute Minion in the box with the other sacrifices, and one of the current sacrifices outside, dressed in robes, and trying to ‘get stabby’ with the Young Protectors.
So, yeah, his name used to be Andy (or whatever), but now he’s been reformatted and it’s just ‘Cute Minion’. (It would have been just ‘Minion’ like all the others, but the Priestess noticed that he was pretty…)

        • stickfigurefairytales

      • Randy Wilde.

    • Yeah will so was that cutie demon that Spooky ‘seemed’ to be rescuing in the bonus comic, but he still needs a name too. I waiting here… suffering and waiting! LOL.

      • You won’t have to wait too long for that answer, my friend. 🙂

        • OMG… chris leans in closer to his laptop…

          Is it Tuesday yet?

          • Ooh, we’re gonna get the name of the cutie demon in that (not comic) story Alex is writing about Spooky for the KS 😀
I wonder if there’ll be some tricksy twist about him.

          • (chris stomps about the house happily singing)

“Gay demon boy, yay, gay demon boy… he’s a happy demon and he’s here to save the day… (repeat) Gay demon boy, yay, gay demon boy… he’s a happy demon and he’s here to save the dayyyyy… (repeat)…”

        • Klaus

          Kyle’s long lost brother?

    • Tahir Raines

Don’t say never. Who knows. It may be an option on the next kickstarter.

  • No_One_Special

an I hope that will knock him on his ass

  • TwilightDreamer

Sitting in the tea room at work desperately trying not to laugh at the look on Duncan’s face XD

  • Fabulous Alien

One good but unintendes consequence of having been working until the early hours of the morning every day for the past month or so has been getting to see these pages as soon as they are out of the oven. Awesome work Alex, Adam and Verónica!

    • Thank you, Fabulous Alien! Glad to have you here when they’re fresh! 🙂

  • Arrogance did not become him well.. what he got a taste of here. The sphincter was more important.

  • Eris, elder daughter of Nyx

Oh, Duncan, sweetheart, Tsunami doesn’t want to lay a finger on you. He isn’t interested in you at all. You’re just marginally in his line of vision. Now scoot! Mwahaha. ^_^

  • davefragments

I think that Duncan deserves a recitation (aloud, please) of part three of the “Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner”
    Water, water, every where,
    And all the boards did shrink;
    Water, water, every where,
    Nor any drop to drink.
The very deep did rot: O Christ!
    That ever this should be!
Yea, slimy things did crawl with legs
    Upon the slimy sea.
About, about, in reel and rout
    The death-fires danced at night;
The water, like a witch’s oils,
Burnt green, and blue and white.

  • silibub

I do hate to see a snappy one-liner go to waste, but also LOL.

    • I have no doubt you will await the perfect moment and resurrect it with perfect aplomb! 🙂

  • David Welbourn

I wonder how Tsunami first learned about his powers. Did a bully at the beach kick sand in his face when he was 12 and the ocean kicked back? Did he make water bottles explode in his brother’s face when he was 8? Or was it when he was a baby and didn’t want to take a bath? ‘Honey, I’ve tried to give him a bath! But it’s like the parting of the Red Sea in there!’

    • davefragments

If you’ve ever been around a baby boy – it’s called the fountain of youth.

      wink, wink, wink, wink

    • No, the diapers just never seemed absorbent enough.

      • D. Garrett

        omg im dyin!

    • timemonkey

Maybe he jerked off and sank his houseboat?

  • Fantastic New Year page.

I love that you give us the big action and yet things are already running amuck.

    Where IS my Spooky?
How is Kyle doing with Sircea and her staff?
    Paul… is KungFu, Paul, okay?
Amanda has knocked how many minion heads together about now?

Tsunami… our little gentle uptight Tsu is surprising the big Duncman! LOVE IT.

P#1: I love that Duncan has the same smug smile on in this panel as when he threw Kyle up in the air before getting him to agree to the kiss… Ohhhh Tsu is not to be so easily handled.

P#2: SUPRIIIIISE. Something is happening with fire and water. I wondered on the last page if things were getting confused. Maybe? Maybe not? Whatever is happening is not quite what the Big D. had in mind.

Lots of unknowns and surprises to come. Is Mitch still sky high? Is Spooky doing his nails? Whassup? I’m ready for next week to arrive like just about… NOW!

Thanks Alex, Adam & Veronica. You guys know how to kick off the New Year just right! FIREWORKS!

    • Still going on with the ‘My Spooky’ illusion, but otherwise a great comment 😉

      • What is this illusion you speak of?

        • The cold must have gotten to your head. You’re seeing things that aren’t real 😉

    • Thank you, Chris! Very glad you liked the update and fun as always to read your play-by-play (and the call back to earlier Duncan smuggery). 😀

But who is this “Spooky” you speak of?

      • (splutters…)

WHAT? WHAT DID YOU SAY? Did you guys hear that?

What is MY this “Spooky” you speak of? Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear… this isn’t good. Is this all some elaborate setup to let me down easy. Has a fat minion fallen on MY our spooky and crushed him?

Wailey waily waily… (OMG now I’m quoting Terry Pratchett’s wee free men?) END OF DAYS…

(chris wanders of disconsolately reding garments and making tragic noises in classic tragical fashion)

  • Love the Oh Shit face.

  • Xalun K

What a beautiful distraction Tsunami had going! Seriously cannot wait to see the outcome of this whole ordeal. *vibrates with impatience and excitement* lol

  • Poor Minions. All that hard work and bam!

    • Yes, to think of how quickly they had to make that puzzle of making the bones stay put.

      • The poor things. Now with their hands all sliced it’s going to be hard to begin rebuilding.

        • So true… everything is hunky dory fine until you hit your thumb with that hammer and then that DIY project just isn’t fun any more. Being a minion just isn’t what it used to be.

I wonder if Sircea promised them all some special attention and, just about now, they’re realizing that she’s not going to put-out (well except for silibub). That’s going to cause some human resource problems.

Well except for that cute minion, who wanted Duncan anyway…

          • Yes, she would do away with them personally. Every minion’s dream, to have the boss take them out and not some random flunky

          • Klaus

I don’t think she would. She needs to keep the respect of her minions.

  • Headcanon – Duncan’s beard naturally grows into that pointy shape and its the biggest reason he became a super villain.

  • Kate G

I wonder if under the drab black Target-issue robes those minions are wearing denim overalls with Gru emblems, yellow shirts and are secretly stashing goggles and black rubber gloves…what? You never know where PP picked, ahem, STOLE these guys from! They could very well be Gru’s minions in human form! (You can’t blame me for thinking about this. Ever since I’ve watched “Despicable Me,” I hear the word “minion” and I now imagine those little yellow minions from that movie. D’oh.)

Do you mean a water finger or an actual human finger, Duncan? And where would you like this finger placed? I can think of a lot of places for this finger to be placed. *is in a really dirty frame of mind*

    • Jeffrey Jacobson

Haha! Mixing our milieus and metahphores , I think those guys are red shirts!

      • Kate G

Oh, but who says Gru doesn’t exist in THIS world, eh?

Fine, they can be red coats.

        Or maybe….they are purple shirts.

  • “You’re second mistake was calling me boy. Guess what the first mistake was?”

  • So, when do the roofies Sircea gave the boys in robes wear off?

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

The “cute minion” reminds me a bit of Spooky.

    • Klaus

So that is where Spooky is. He has turned his coat. Let us hope it is only a disguise.

      • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I was thinking that maybe that is why he is missing so far, because he was changing into new clothes to get closer to Duncan and take him by surprise. As a disguised minion Duncan wouldn’t suspect.

  • D. Garrett

im glad tsu didnt give up on his initial orders to try to bring down the bone ring. and anni’s body is quite nice for a silver fox. esp. those legs.

  • fooled ya!!

i know anhi’s speed, so i’m not surprised that a feint was the plan

    hey, chris!
    you behaving yourself!

    • No WAY!
I’m just waiting for your boy, Tsu Tsu, to smash or break something critical and get Missy Sircea’s panties in a complex knot.

I do agree with you. The Dunc may be surprised, but he’s far from out. Spooky is clearly not nullifying Duncan. Where is my Spooky. It’s not a battle until the Chinese Dragon munches someone!

Like the new “G-REX”… trés compact! Nice.

      • (it just came to me, chris-a-rino.
as most of these sorts of things tend to do.

i reck’n spookster continues to wait in the wings, for his moment to strike.
        who knows!
spooky might just be the scene stealer (and make you extra proud of him)!
i am scared to know what sircea shall do.
she’s gonna “aggro” and “critical” someone, for sure, ambassador

        • You speak to my most primal fears G-REX!!!.

If anyone does harm to MY our Spooky, I shall rain a nightmare of frogs and small rodents down on San Francisco. So even if Lady S. gets cranky, I expect Spooky to be okay. Now, if something happens to Kyle, I’ll be wroth, but he’s already had the world’s worst hell-date… I mean come-on! What about karma? Now Mitch? Mitch’s health and well-being is in Doki’s hands, as Tsu Tsu’s is in yours.

I love Paul too, but if something dire happens to him then the resulting good-luck that will explode willy-nilly over the YPs will be so overwhelming that @alexwoolfson:disqus’s story would be practically over with them getting a ticker-tape parade in New York.

I’m not exactly sure who is responsible for Amanda’s success (although everyone seems on her side in a general way and I’m not sure she needs our help, she’s just THAT formidable), and our Australian Mod. will always take Ducan home and @silibub:disqus has a protective bunker for her Platinumness, in case she needs a place to hide reside regally until her next bid for world domination.

So, I think everyone is covered. The only ones who seem doomed to die horribly are the Detectives in the bonus comic.

          • Hunter and Killer, I don’t think they have anyone protecting them.

          • GOOD! They shook my Kyle. I don’t like them. So they can be thumped… like really thumped! 🙂

  • I only know one line of the song, but, I saw that first panel and I instantly thought of Carly Simon’s “You’re so Vain”.

    • SofiaT

To be fair, we all thought that water fist was for him.

      • Tricksy Alex………

      • Very true! But with that look on his face…

      • silibub

Technically it was — or at least it seems like Tsunami hoped to smack Duncan on his way to blasting the bone circle. Same strategy he used for his first strike: aim at the villain(s) and then use the momentum to hit the portal as well. Would have worked too, if Duncan weren’t so evasive.

        • SofiaT

Two birds with one stone sounds about right; but I bet Duncan is miffed now that he realizes him getting knocked down was just the side benefit rather than the goal.

Meaning, he thought he was Big Bird and now his feather are ruffled. 😛

    • Well that’s fair, he probably thought that song was about him.

      • D. Garrett

watched that vid. all i gotta say is there is no way im gonna put all the work in making a home made delicious pie, then put it by an open window! lol!!! thats just funny.

oh and yeah duncan thought that water fist was about him. hes so vain….

  • Klaus

It took a lengthy ritual and blood sacrifices from 17 minions to activate this key. I wonder what it took to activate the other.

  • Falconfly

Kay, no bloodbending then. How about encircling him in helices of water infused with positive energy?

  • Pikinanou

Don’t take it personal, Anni, Tsu is only doing his job. OF COOUURSE, he wants to punch you in the face. A lot of people do. 🙂

  • kiri

Reminds me of Granny Weatherwax in Wyrd Sisters
…soldier falls down dead with a dagger in his back…
“Perhaps you weren’t aware of what I was aiming at.” she whispered

  • Jeldenil

So, how did they recruit those minions? Did they place an add?

You did NOT anticipate that Anni >:D

And the Page is just awesome! I love these action loaded scenes and panels 🙂

    great work Adam and Vero!

  • WarGoddess

Tsunami: I wasn’t even aiming at you, BITCH. You ain’t that important, man, get over yourself!

  • Nate

I figure odds are about even that Tsunami will respond with “I didn’t miss.” 🙂

    • Nate

And 1:20 that he gives Anni the finger with his water hand. 😉

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

    “Famous last words”…….”but……they CHEATED!”

  • Paul D’Arbonne

Tsunami: Who said I was aiming at you?

  • fujoshifanatic

See what I mean from my last comment on the previous page? Nice little action twist there! This is going to be quite fun to watch unfold. Awesome job TYP!

Hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year, and that things are off to a great start for you all. I know things are looking up already for a certain stinky little gray and white kitten that walked up to me today on my way to the store (I’m such a sucker!). One bowl of kibble later, she is happily purring while giving herself a post-bath bath in my lap as I type this.

She is sweet as candy (didn’t even so much as meow during her two baths!), but I can’t keep her. My other cats would have a revolt, and revolting means poop and piss EVERYWHERE! I’ve already started calling around to the area shelters to see who can take her in. Once I find her one, I’m certain she will get adopted fairly quickly, given her age (about six to eight weeks) and her lovely temperament.

Here’s to lending a helping hand when you can in 2015. 🙂

  • LL

Haha Anni’s smarmy-ass grin sure fell quick.

  • Heheheh… “Clever boy…”

  • Holly

Lampy is going to be SO grumpy!

    • I KNOW! But how will we tell… he looked grumpy all the time…

      • D. Garrett

i think the presence of fire everywhere (from him and not kyle o course) might be a clue…wonder what his aim range is? and what else can he do? questions, questions.

      • zunden

Mostly by the dead animals raining from the sky, or the pillars of fire and brimstone shooting up all over the place.

        • Yeahhhhhhh… the dead animal thing is usually a giveaway, isn’t it?

          • zunden

Indeed. I look for it every time. You always know there are demons afoot if there are small animals raining from the heavens. Large animals are more serious. I’d say stay inside, but they tend to break through the roof, unfortunately. Better idea is to just give yourself a hula hoop full of salt and a nice underground basement.

  • Saxon_Brenton

It occurs to me: we’re approaching the point where we find out how much rigidity or resilience Team Silver’s plan has. As in, Spooky has speculated that the ritual probably requires complicated astronomical requirements, and if the Young Protectors can throw a wrench in the works even briefly then ritual is effectively ruined. This is explicitly what Commander’s plan is based on – stop the ritual and thereby save the world (although the visualisation of her plan also had the possibly optimistic outcome of Annihilator and the Priestess being captured and hauled off by the military). And of course this is why Tsunami’s fake-out of Annihilator (and the look on Annihbilator’s face) on this page was so satisfying.

But based on how Annihilator reacts (and possibly also the Priestess, depending on how much she can think straight about multiple problems when Commander is telepathically attacking her) we’ll soon be finding out if there’s some way if they can salvage their plan.

(Which may include the way-cool but utterly terrifying prospect of the Priestess having enchanted the bone gate to be self-repairing, and in the next page we see the fallen bone pieces leaping back into place…)

But on more likely options: Do Team Silver have a contingency plan? Well, there’s been a lot of fan speculation about possible schemes within schemes. However over the last few pages there’s been various indicators that neither Annihilator or the Priestess were expecting the Young Protectors to turn up (mainly the lack of lookouts, but Annihilator’s shocked “No” as well). But it’s early in fight scene, something might turn up.

Alternatively, is there a wider window of opportunity to perform the ritual? Hopefully Spooky was correct about the need for exacting timing – but we should not discount the possibility that the villains simply need to regroup and pound the snot out of the heroes, then implement some hasty repairs. (Very hasty repairs, considering that Commander has the US military scrambling to come.)

    • Klaus

Actually Spooky did not say that they would need an astronomical alignment. He said that if they did, the YP might have more time to stop them. I think it is a safe bet that they do not. Such an alignment occuring the day after Kyle’s birthday would be a most unlikley coincidence.

      • D. Garrett

unlikely coincidence….unless his conception, birth, existence and presence at the ritual was required and planned by sircea and laampros centuries b4 the birth of duncan and kyle. the latter 2 merely being tools. if this is the plan between sircea and laampros, might they have underestimated the bond duncan felt with kyle? possibly resulting in duncan betraying them? or have they anticipated his “weakness” and planned contingencies 4 it? its obvious i am still not sure kyle should be anywhere near the ritual.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, that first bit is an important clarification. Which unfortunately re-iterates and improves the chances of Team Silver being able to salvage their plan 🙁

  • Saxon_Brenton

You know, I went severely off topic with that last post. It started out as a wondering-out-loud about how intelligent the Annihilator would prove to be on the next page. As in, intelligence is not just measured in the ability to remember facts and figures, but other things like the quick grasp of new situations and generally being fast on the uptake. Annihilator likes to think of himself as clever and a schemer. The comments of Hunter and Killer indicate he has a reputation as an intellectual (or at least the pretension of being one).

So what I want to see from Mr “I’m not just dangerous because I’ve got a crapload of superpowers; I’ve also got a brain and I’m not afraid to use it” Wells is a quick grasp of the tactical problem Team Silver have. Specifically, the Young Protectors need to take out the gate, and they need to keep Team Silver off balance enough to prevent Team Silver from stopping the Young Protectors from taking out the gate. This will be a problem when at least one of the heroes (Tsunami) has ranged attack powers that allow him to change his target, so that even if Tsunami aims at Annihilator and misses he can still redirect the water blast against the gate. Red Hot may have a similar ability, if I’m interpreting the way he called the flames to himself from the burning building in chapter 1.

In particular I’m thinking that it would be nice if Annihilator has a single panel of chagrin, thinking to himself something like: “They want to destroy the gate. Well of course they do. And my ego fell for it… Automatically thinking they were here for the glory of trying and bring down ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Villain. Even Kyle’s outburst made me think he was here only for revenge… Well played, Young Protectors. A pity I’ll have to kill you all.”

  • Sapfo

    HRRRM! *throat clearing*
So this comic have so far shown how harsh and dangerous the life of a minion is. I would like to take this moment and make a suggestion to Mr Alex. A minion help group

Other then that I would like to say that this page is a excellent beginning of this new year.
    That´s all for me.

    • Terri Sutton

Do they sell something to raise money like the RSL sells poppies?

      • Abbi Orenstein

yes they sell puppies… dead ones

    • Jac

      It’s time to unionize!

  • Sunfire

I can almost hear the unspoken retort/comeback there – “Who said I was aiming for you?” :p lol

  • Derkins

Ha-HA! He wasn’t aiming for *you* cocky Duncan! Like I said, ego is their weakness. :p
The only other thing I can say about this page, is: Heck yes.

  • Klaus

Alex said in a comment on this page that we will soon learn the name of the cute demon from the bonus comic. Has it already shown up? Is that why Spooky isn’t doing his part?

    • silibub

I’m excited about the bonus comic demon because there are so many crazy possibilities where he’s concerned — like maybe Spooky and the demon boy are sharing his body, and Spooky can do a spell that would let the demon predominate for a while (with an accompanying power boost). Or what if they have a link that allows Spooky to summon him directly, and Spooky’s stepped aside to do that so the team has some extra help? I’m so intrigued!

      • SofiaT

Or maybe the opening of the portal will (still) be successful and we’ll have a reunion once the demons make it through?

      • Klaus

Maybe Spooky has some kind of link to this demon that allows him to do magic and stay sane?

    • I feel pretty sure the meaning is that we (the backers, and then maybe anyone else later) will soon get Alex’ writen story about Spooky – as part of the stretch goals.
It was supposed to be a short story with a few illustrations, but from what Alex has told, his creative writer mind made it a liiittle bit longer than intended xD

I think Alex said somewhere that the story had passed 12,000 words .. or was that something else, Alex?

      • Yep, that story has based the 12000 word mark (and then some). I had to switch gears to finish up a special comic script for y’all (that I’m excited to share) so I can get that art cooking, but very much looking forward to getting back to the Spooky prose story. 😀

  • Oneofyou

So i just spent the past 5 hours of my life reading this comic from the beginning and honestly, im speechless, the whole story had me by the edge of the seat the entire time, i did not see what the annihilator did to Kyle coming, i thought they were going to have a sweet romantic night… but the twist blew me off completely. What will happen between Duncan and Kyle ? Will their emotions come between their plans? I can’t to see this amazing story unfold, the only thing im sure about is that i am donating for sure! Amazing work done here!

    • Klaus

Welcome to the forum. This is a very friendly place, with very thoughtful comments. And very silly ones too.

      • Oneofyou

Thanks for the welcoming, I’m really loving this forum, where has this been my whole life?! (Or where was I?) And yes, I’m having a blast reading some of the comments, some torment me with more questions but hey, thats the fun about all this! I’ll be active around here often for sure.

        • Derkins

This really is a special forum full of smart, thoughtful, and respectful people. I honestly haven’t found anywhere else like it on the web. Glad to have you! 🙂

    • SofiaT

      Welcome, Oneofyou!
Happy to have you here as one of us! 🙂

    • S+

And if you are enjoying this one so much, have you read Artifice? It is equally great, but finished.

      • D. Garrett

a shot in the dark, tough and no kissing were good too.

    • Howdy Oneofyou!

Welcome to the site! I’m delighted to hear you’ve been enjoying our work and I really appreciate your kind words! I hope we get to see you again — lots more cool stuff ahead!

Thank you for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed reading the comic!

    • *chanting* One of us…one of us…one of us…

    • Welcome Oneofyou! So happy to have you join us!

    • D. Garrett

since u have caught up, you gotta report to camp when we wait for the next page to upload. a lot of fun. which is tonight. 😀

    • justkeepondriving

      Hello & Welcome! 🙂

  • James Howard

I ship kyle and mitch from now on, i was always iffy about the annihilator anyway with his age and all.

  • I’m late to the fight. Sorry. I got involved with another webcomic project. I just remembered today and I realized that I missed 6 pages as I caught up.

I’m slightly surprised that their plan is working so far. 🙂 But I think the Annihilator is understanding what they are trying to do here and is going to put and end to it, but I know he won’t hurt Kyle.

At this point I’m not looking to ship anyone. I still hold out some hope that Kyle and the Anni get back together, but I don’t mind if Kyle ends up with Mitch.

  • [chris comes super-extra freakishly-early to the campsite to try and get best spot. He sees that the coast is completely clear. (well it should be the sun is barely coming up and it’s freezing here, so he’ll probably have to start the damn fire… blarg). chris trudges to best spot and sets up comfy pad, blankets, cool chest, book for waiting time, checks wireless internet service, gets out laptop, iPad and iPhone, looks for plugs he left here last time… still plans to rent out extra plugs to to other campers for spare change. sits down with a sigh…………. OMG… he realizes he has like 12-16 hours until the new page arrives. BORING. chris nails down all his stuff, so the sneaky @admiraljane:disqus can’t move it and goes shopping for some cool camp attire in the meantime.]

    • D. Garrett

^^^^uses the back of a hammer to pry nails up. places all of chris’ stuff under a large blue tarp with stones holding it down. writes “i was here!” in large black letters on tarp. *snickers. leaves the scene and wonders if AJ will take heat 4 it. :pranks r such fun:

      • [chris stops back by and is tickled to see that the hidden spycam, the one he normally uses to see if he’s being cheated upon by unscrupulous lovers, is still functioning where he left it in the bushes. then he watches @disqus_2uZdiWRcNW:disqus’s antics and laughs and laughs. chris wanders over and removes the camouflage netting hiding his real (or issss it?) camping equipment, in its better yet location by the campfire, collects the decoy camp equipment and stores it, thus to mystify d.garrett later. chris carefully removes the adorkable letters “I was here.” and puts them on the bean bag chair left behind by @admiraljane:disqus just to confuse things, but leaves before Aj’s luggage wakes up. as he’s taking the decoy items back to the car, chris notices that @Redffern:disqus is once again sleeping by the fire, but now clutching a large sledgehammer and muttering about looters or something. chris leaves realizing this may indeed be an odd campout…]

        • D. Garrett

^^^^arrives at camp yelling my usual “hello everybody!” looks for tarp bundle to find its missing. sees a bean bag chair with a familiar msg on it. finds chris d talking around camp fire. grabs a delicious cinnabon out of my snack bag and offers it to him as peace offering. when he asks what it is for i say i had 1 too many. *brushes hands together. “there!” and im puzzled why chris d seems to be laughing at me…i think it must be my imagination.

          • [chris totally overwhelmed by the power of cinnabons is rendered speechless and helpless to the power of d.garrett. LOL.]

  • *sets up tent*
I get the feeling its going to be a crazy camp tonight. I AM READY.
    *holds sledgehammer with shifty eyes*

  • *Walks the campsite, measuring distance from campfire, checking acoustics, finds wifi hotspot, and settles with beanbag chair, crochet blanket and bag of crochet (I don’t go anywhere without my yarn), kindle, iphone, laptop, special always full thermos, tardis cooler (its bigger on the inside) that never runs out of snacks, laughs at prank played on @chrisdangerfield:disqus by @disqus_2uZdiWRcNW:disqus on other side of campsite.*

  • *Takes a quick peak*

Oh good, the fire is already lit. Means it will be nice and comfy when I get back later for camp. I need to sleep first and then drag the stationary to the fire *reserves on of Chris’ extra plugs*
I’ll join later with just myself, the comput- Ekkkk!! .. and hopefully NOT the spider that just fell off my wall before I got to smack it properly >.< … oh, and a scone to munch during the intensity just after the page is up.

…*whimpers* Why did I miss that spider by half an inch? It fell down behind my desk *keeps feet up on chair legs*

    • I hate that! Arg! You whack the spider, miss and it goes behind something. And you can never ever find it afterwards.

      • See my friend in Melbourne likes to torture me with pictures of Hunstman Spiders, as big as dinner plates with their legs spread, (and they’re fast) as they crawl up door jams and across ceilings and behind things… see it’s nice that they’re so big you don’t lose track of them.

Except when I hear that they crawl up behind the sun visor in your car and then when the sun is in your eyes and you pull the visor down, they fall in your lap.

…………. AND YOU CRASH YOUR CAR.

        • stickfigurefairytales

        • davefragments

My neighbor got in her car once and field mice ran across the floor of the car, over her feet, and out the door. Not as big or scary but still unexpected.

Another time I told my Mom to start my tractor while I did something to it (my brother’s 4 kids were out visiting) and another gang of field mice ran out of the tractor as it started. The screams were delightful. (to me and not them)

          • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, field mice are adorable. Although they can apparently carry lots of diseases, which is less good.

          • davefragments

These are really small and sort of cute for mice. But not when they are inside the house and eating the food and poo-ing and piddling all over. They can stay “field” mice and not “house” mice.

        • stickfigurefairytales

On the subject of Australia but not spiders, have you heard of swooping season there? Apparently the magpies become really aggressive and swoop at people to attack them.

          • SofiaT

            Yes. They do that.

They have a bloody good memory too.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Actually, that reminds me! My sister was telling me about one friend of hers who lives in Australia, and she and her family have never been swooped at by magpies because they feed them. Once some adult magpies brought them a baby that was injured, and they helped it and apparently earned the loyalty of the magpie kingdom for life.

          • SofiaT

I find that very believable. Magpies remember faces and apparently they have their own “language” so they could easily communicate to each other if someone is a foe or a friend.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            So cool!!!

          • I agree with Sofia. Magpies are very intelligent. If they trusted the people it’s very likable.

      • Jakk Anthony Guzman

That happened to me a few weeks ago. I saw a black spider on the floor next to the bed and missed it, it ran under the bed. I spent a long time looking for it but it vanished.

        • And then they wait and wait until you’re sleeping and OMG!! And again they disappear.

        • D. Garrett

          i call them “houdini’s.”

  • Need to kill some time before camping?

Here is EDDIE IZZARD’S “Puberty” See, I was just having a rather crap day and suddenly I stumbled upon Eddie, (did you know transvestites can prefer women… Yeeeaaaah, it’s true. Eddie says so and he’s an executive transvestite so he should know. It’s all right here.) and my day got so much better. So… I share. No, no, thank me later.

“You get to puberty and you finally want to get together with whatever you sex you prefer and, you think, OMG I want to look my best! And Mother Nature says, NO, you will look the worst you’ve ever looked in your life. I remember looking in the mirror during puberty and thinking — I WOULDN’T SHAG ME!”

For those of us who didn’t look like Mitch at fifteen years old… (chris looks around… okay just me then) it’s positively genius!! Enjoy.

    • silibub

Physically, I was a travesty of a human being at fifteen. I didn’t start looking decent until college!

      • Now I love you even moar!!!!

      • SofiaT

I was trying really hard to pretend I was a boy, when I was in my early-mid teens. Baggy clothes, short hair and no make-up.

All my photos from that era have mysteriously disappeared…

        • syllibub

Ha! They must be out there in the void with my high school pictures…

    • stickfigurefairytales

I love Eddie Izzard so much, and Dress to Kill (the show that clip is from) is my all-time favorite of his.

  • davefragments

After driving through the dastardly and treacherous 1 and a half inches of snow this after, I got my hair cut. IT WAS 20 deg F out there (-7 C) and it was COLD! So when I get some chores done and crawl under warm covers, I’ll be back tonight for the new page.

    • Sound like our weather right now, Dave. Bitterly cold with a dump of snow and drastic warming up tomorrow. *waits for cold/flu to come back*

      • davefragments

I have to go out into the cold, cruel world again on Thursday to shop for food. oh brrrrrrr.r.r.r. …

  • Hmmm. Question to the masses. Is there really that big of a problem finding out that the characters of a boy’s love comic you are reading would identify themselves as straight? I mean they are developing a romantic relationship with each other, but if asked the characters would say that they are straight.

What the author had to say:
They are both straight, kinda. If you asked them, they’d say that. They are not sexually attracted to other men, or to each other, really.
What attracts them in each other is their personality and just how they are. The arousal comes from being close, touching, skin contact. Feeling good mutually.
But in general, excluding each other, they’re both attracted to women but not men.

What I meant by that was that they, J and D, identify as straight, J maybe cares about that a bit less than D. That’s the canon. I just wanted to put that out there. I think all the readers can interpret that as they wish and label the characters how they want. I don’t want to limit that like “no, you can’t say they are bi!” or “no, you can’t say they are demi” or pan or
anything. Everybody interprets labels a bit differently anyway.

    and to clarify even more:

Okay, so…. In _____ it is pretty obvious that D has a crush on C. And J has mentioned his girlfriend J a couple of times. They have also talked about how sex with a guy is something new to them and that they have not really thought of doing it. But since they now love each other they start to want to make love with each other. That’s it.
It is just a really sappy love story in all simplicity.
And it’s not like I’m highlighting their heterosexuality or anything. It’s not the point of this comic. The point is really just their relationship.
I’ve never said ____ is a queer comic or that it has some kind of big lgbtq message. I really support all the minorities and I’m all for equality and all that and sure I could make a queer comic with a deeper meaning but there are tons of comic artist who really know about those things and can talk about those issues much better than I do.
____ is just a love story. That’s all it is. And it is BL because it has two boys who are in love.

    • D. Garrett

i think its cool if initially in the romance they identify themselves as straight. but after several sexual encounters with the same sex i think its reasonable to reevaluate that status. if the same sex encounters continue i think accepting bisexuality or homosexuality would be a clearer definition of that individuals sexuality. and important to a sense of self acceptance.

      • The characters in question have not had sex at all yet. There has been a single butt grope and kissing.

        • Gayseraph

Is this comic Transfusions by any chance?

          • D. Garrett

i thought the same thing. i think its sweet when love happens first. *big sigh.

          • Yes. It is.

    • syllibub

The whole “straight with an exception” trope has never bothered me, personally. It sounds like what the author is doing is depicting a kind of homo-romantic dynamic that the characters are gradually broadening into the sexual realm, which is actually pretty interesting! And in a way it makes a lot of sense to me; our society is so heteronormative that it’s perfectly believable that a man could identify as straight despite a notable attraction to at least one another man — for instance, he might not want to call himself bisexual because that would involve a huge shift in how he (and others, if he comes out) would perceive himself.

I like that the author isn’t dead set on pinning down the characters’ sexualities, and is letting readers interpret it as they wish. It definitely opens up room for discussion about sexuality and how it can be fluid, why a character might identify the way they do even if their attractions seem to contradict that, and so on.

    • Hmm… here’s my take on this whole thing – we focus way too much sometimes on the labels if someone is this, that, in between, in left field… you get the idea.

If you like someone – you like them. If you love them – you love them. Your focus and choices can and do change over time and you can discover you really belong in a new category down the road.

I may like this person but too scared (pressured by media, family, perceptions, etc…) to come out as a new label based on perceptions of how you will be judged by others, or might just not be ready to admit it to yourself or others.

Someone might have also identified as straight for a long time and then finally ran into the right person to change/challenge their perceptions. Am I….? really or is this just a new feeling? Feeling only for this particular person?

I think being free to like/love who you want and throwing the labels to the wind is always the best direction to take.

Completely agree with the BL label in this case because it is two boys in love, but leaving the labels up to each person’s interpretation is fine. I would much rather focus on the relationships and love 😉

Sorry if a bit confusing, but this hits home to me in a lot of ways. Thinking your straight for a LONG time, then finding the right crushes to turn that idea from one label to another. Are you bi? Pan? etc… I just love the idea of loving you who love!

  • SofiaT

I’ve been sleeping since 7.30pm last night and for 10 hours straight.
A combination of the jet lag that refuses to go away even after 10 days and the unnatural cold that’s causing me to go into winter hibernation mode.

Upside: I’m up at 5.35am and ready for the page update!

    • Lucky you! I have had little sleep and have a sleep deprivation headache, that is only slightly better after a short nap.

      • SofiaT

I’ve been sleeping about 5hrs maximum, every night for the past week. I think last night’s sleep was me finally catching up to all the sleep I’ve been missing.

        • stickfigurefairytales

I hope you’ll be able to sleep better again!

          • SofiaT

Thanks! You and me both! 🙂

  • stickfigurefairytales

For some reason yesterday I was very convinced that it was Tuesday. I tried to go to my yoga class, only to be informed that it was, in fact, Monday, and even after that I came on here expecting it to be camping night! Oh dear.

    • SofiaT

I’m on vacation, so I keep forgetting the days too.
They all seem like a Saturday to me.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Same with me, except unemployed. (I’m going to go back to job hunting again after my mom has her knee replacement in February and is recovered from that.)

        • SofiaT

Good luck with the job hunting and best wishes to your mom for a quick recovery.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Thank you!!

          • Best of luck to your mother. Will she be recovering at home or be in a rehab center for a little bit?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Thank you! Since I’m around all the time, she’ll be able to come home once she can leave the hospital, which is what she did this past fall when she got her hip replaced. That’s why I’m waiting on the job search – she’ll need to have somebody to help her at all time at first.

          • That is good, the rehab places can be a bit…dodgy. When my grandmother was at one after her knee replacement, she caught an infection from there and got really sick. I liked the place she went after getting her hips replaced a lot better.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Oh jeez! We’ve got some awesome hospital services here, but even with that I know my mom is a lot more comfortable when she can just be at home.

        • davefragments

I know two people with artificial knees and they both say that it is painful. If you’ve ever seen the scar, you know why.
They said the therapy afterward isn’t too bad, just longer than expected.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, she’s especially worried because her knee already has a lot of scar tissue. She had to have it operated on when she was in high school, which was in the 1950s, so she has a huge scar on it.

          • davefragments

Once the incision heals they seem to be OK.
Cold is tough and no ladders. I never asked about stairs. My neighbor mucks his horses so apparently he can shovel with two metal knees.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Stairs should be doable, especially once she’s fully recovered.

          • davefragments

            I imagine so.
MY other friend – Chrissy – doesn’t have a bad scar. It’s there but not like “frankenstein” with lots of scar tissue.

          • stickfigurefairytales

My mom’s old scar is very Frankenstein-looking. Oh, fifties medicine! 🙁

          • My grandmother had open heart surgery in the 50’s. To clear the artery, the doctor stuffed his finger into it and swirled it around. Voila! Clear and open artery.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Wow! D:

          • Yup.

          • davefragments

I had my appendix out in 1979 and then an operation for adhesions and blockages and then a plication to get my insides to behave. It left an incisional hernia and lots of scar tissue. When I had to have the incisional hernia repaired 3 years later, they used staples and the remainder was just a red line down my tummy about 11 inches long.
From what I saw on Chrissy’s knee, the scar was there but not in your face scar.

One other thing I was going to say about stairs – consider getting your Mom a chair lift. My Mom’s house had an elevator for me and I was never so glad that she never had to use stairs as she got into her late 70’s and 80’s.

          • stickfigurefairytales

She’s not interested in a chair lift at the moment, but we did just install some bars and a little railing for the couple of steps that lead to the downstairs bathroom.

          • davefragments

            Be careful of falls.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That’s why I’m here to help! When she had her hip done my dad and I followed right behind her when she was up and about to make sure she’d be okay.

        • All the best of luck with that. My man has just gone through a tough round of interviews for a very good job that looks promising. I can’t tell you how many body parts I have crossed in hopes for him.

I’ll cross them for you too!!!

      • Other than the cold, how is the vacation going?

        • SofiaT

          The cold overwhelms everything.
I don’t feel like going out much because I’m not keen on freezing, but I’m going to force myself today, got people to see and shopping to do that I can’t postpone much longer.

          • Well I hope seeing family has been at least good. And may the force be with you when you go out into the cold

          • SofiaT

Today it’s supposed to be sunny weather with a slightly higher temperature (high 6 degrees Celsius, low -2)…

          • Damn! And I was complaining about the 19 and lower degree (F) night.

          • An Admiral was not made to suffer… simple fact. 🙂

          • Indeed not.

          • No indeed… that is why you have minions!

          • But how do minions keep me warm. (Clean your mouth out with soap if you say it.)

          • Conundrum #43.

          • stickfigurefairytales

They…bring you lots of blankets and hot drinks?

          • TRUE! I need minions now!

You dont need minions. get a few more V´s and have them do the work. Or train your dogs.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Dogs are warm, too! Can you get one of them to curl up next to you?

          • I wish. They don’t like to share body heat with me. 🙁

          • stickfigurefairytales

          • I know! So selfish!

          • Wouldn’t V’s be minions?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Actually, it looks like 19 degrees F is still colder (it’s like -7 Celsius). 6 degrees Celsius is like…42 or 43 degrees Fahrenheit.

          • I guess I need a refresher course on reading comprehension. Of course it would help if I looked up celsius 😐

          • davefragments

The freezing point of water is zero – 0 – Celsius and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The boiling point of water is 100 Celsius and 212 Fahrenheit.

          • Yes, well, I also need reading comprehension lessons apparently.

          • davefragments

Don’t feel alone – that difference drives people crazy in Engineering school.

          • I’ll try… 😀

          • davefragments

I haven’t thrown in Absolute Zero yet, It’s got three different scales. Most people whimper softly at the thought.
            wink, wink

          • I’ll be grateful if you left it unsaid. 🙂

          • davefragments

So am I. I don’t remember the details and I don’t want to look them up tonight.

          • The fact that you even have to “look them up” gives me strength. 🙂

          • Forever and ever grateful. 😀

          • (chris whimpers softly)

          • davefragments

aw, you want a scratch behind the ear?

          • when not?

          • Engineering school? What is this “Engineering school? you speak of. Such a strange language. LOL.

          • davefragments

Will you still be sending me a valentine
            Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?

          • Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I’d been out till quarter to three
            Would you lock the door?

Will you still need me, will you still feed me
            When I’m sixty-four?

          • davefragments

          • stickfigurefairytales

Well, that much is easy – it’s the in between parts that I always have to look up.

          • davefragments

google will find it if you type in 32 F in C and a nice box comes up. Saves time.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, that’s about what I did.

          • SofiaT

In Athens the average day temperature in winter is 15 degrees Celsius, so 4 degrees (what the temperature has been since I arrived) is reaaaaally cold and very unusual.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Right now it’s 10 degrees F (-12 degrees Celsius) where I live. Granted, it’s also night, but still.

          • But still. It’s cold! It hurts too. Luckily the last couple of days and nights have been a little warmer.

    • *hugs* Poor stick!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Aw, thanks, Doki!

        • Trying to decide if I should take a couple more pain pills.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, when did you last take some?

          • ummm….1-2 hours ago.

          • SofiaT

            Wait 4 hours at least.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, what Sofia said. I hope you feel better soon, though!

          • I could have taken the stronger pain meds, but they all have caffeine and I really don’t need to be up all night again.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Excellent point.

    • I’ve had days like that.

      • stickfigurefairytales

The part that really got me was that I still didn’t quite grasp the concept after the yoga thing.

        • Been there. There are just days when nothing sinks in. No matter how much it’s explained. Hope the days have settled for you

          • stickfigurefairytales

            They have, thank you!

        • SofiaT

I was in a panic yesterday.
I’m (surprisingly for a Greek) big on breakfast, and I woke up at my sister’s house to find out there’s nothing edible in the cupboards/fridge (she’s a uni student and lives on coffees and pasta).

And just when I thought that a trip to the bakery was needed, I realised it was Epiphany, which is a public holiday here, meaning no bakeries or super markets were open!

Thank The Force for immigrants, I found a mini market owned by a Muslim open and I got some bread, milk and eggs. Phew!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Just another example of why multiculturalism is great. We have a big Jewish population in my area, so there are a lot of great bakeries that are open on Sundays and on Christmas.

    • I was having a day like that yesterday too. I blame the holidays!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Definitely their fault.

  • You guys have started to camp out early. Sorry, Just walking by. I have some bowls of noddle soups. I’ll leave them here. I asked the corner store if you guys could use their microwave, and they said sure. You just have to buy something. A drink a cookie or what ever. 🙂 I’ll be back in like 2 hours.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Okay, take care until then!

    • D. Garrett

^^grabs a noodle soup and buys: arizona sweet tea, bbq potato chips, dark chocolate raisinettes, pint of chocolate ice cream, and a cheeseburger. nukes burger and noodles. grabs a spoon and fork. heads back to my spot near fire.

  • Ooh… time to watch the new Magical Boys anime while waiting for the update… *faints*

    • *hugs* Hello sweetie! Which site do you use to watch?

      • Crunchyroll still 😉 they get my monies to watch pretty anime.

    • Sapfo

      which one?

  • Niggle

Well, I fell off the map with my reading for a while. I’m ashamed to say that I went weeks without reading updates. o.o So reading six pages in a sitting was a very different experience. As always, Alex, I love reading your comments, they make me smile and laugh.

It’s very weird, but all of a sudden it felt overwhelming to keep up with all the online content I was interested in. And every day I didn’t read or watch anything just made the pile even bigger and made me avoid it even more. Guess that’s one drawback to using a RSS reader, you can just see how much of a pile it all is. I have 70 comic updates/creator posts sitting there unread, mocking me. While I was only three weeks behind on TYP I’m a whole month behind on others, making it over 1,200 unread things in total. Yeah, that calls for some culling…

Has that ever happened to anyone else? Almost overnight you suddenly lose interest in a broad range of things that had formerly engrossed your leisure time or at least were a very, very steady habit?

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve had that feeling of being overwhelmed too! I wonder if it’s a matter of things exceeding a certain threshold in terms of quantity, or if it’s more related to me having a fluctuating level of ability to keep up with them.

      • Niggle

Yeah, I’m not sure what it is. Volume is certainly an issue, it sort of creates a brick wall that you can’t even break through to get to the content you’re still legitimately interested in. I’d open up the RSS reader, look at a couple things I was barely interested in, but were sort of easy reading and didn’t really require engaged attention, and then closed the tab.

I’ve just did some culling, two feeds gone and bam! 300 less things I was never going to read gone. Yay!

    • Saxon_Brenton

I’ve found myself occasionally falling behind on some of my favourite amature (text) fiction, to the point that it feels too intimidating to even participate meaningfully with the discussion threads. That only compounds when I then put things off and tell myself I’ll catch up later.

      • Niggle

Yeah, I haven’t commented here very much, but being behind so much I couldn’t even make myself read the comments even when I did wander over to catch an update. Which really sucks since this is, by far, the best comment section on the internet. Not just comics, the internet as a whole.

    • syllibub

Totally understandable! Especially when you’re very mentally and emotionally invested in the material — you don’t just read an update, you have to process it. So when I don’t have much time on my hands, I have to screen things carefully before I take the plunge to make sure it’s worth it.

      • Niggle

You’ve hit the nail on the head. I sort of mentioned that in a comment below. When I did look at a few things, I made it “lite” reading, things that didn’t require much time or thought. And with Kyle and Co, they deserved more than that. I think this weekend I’ll relax and indulge myslef by rereading from the beginning. Get back into the energy of the story.

    • SofiaT

I think it takes a lot of energy to keep up with things in the long-run, even if your interest has not wavered with the passage of time. Especially with the pressures of real life in the mix.

It’s inevitable that you will be left behind at some point and will have to catch up, we all do.

I bought me some comic books a couple of months back and I’ve yet to read them because I want to take the time to enjoy them… and I never seem to have that time available.

      • Niggle

Yes, time and energy, and real life. So much drama sucking the life out of you. 😀 Thank you, you’ve given me another clue to why my interest free falled.

        • SofiaT

Look at it this way: not being entirely focused on hobbies like webcomics and tv shows, means you have a healthy balance in your life. Comics and tv series and books are fun, and we all get periods in our lives when that’s all we want to do (I know there are days when I don’t want to see another human being) but leaving them all behind now and then to enjoy some quality time with real people or experiment in cooking new recipes, or do some gardening or go hiking or swimming, is a good thing! 😉

          • Niggle

Quite true. I wouldn’t call my life balanced, but I’ve been really involved in a newish hobby this year that has also made me much more sociable. At least I have a whole new pack of people I claim as friends.

But I must depart, I already claimed I was going to sleep. XD Night!

          • SofiaT

    • I’m glad you’re still enjoying my little notes, Niggle. And I’m flattered that TYP still was a priority for you vs. the 1200 other things on your plate. Welcome back! 😀

      • Niggle

You’re very welcome and thank you! 😀

  • *Peaks in again* Do I need a little more sleep to handle the day? I just might have to do that.. I can sleep 45mins more. To do or not to to?

    • Sleep is good!

    • Psssst Chris is just trying to distract you so he can get to Spooky first on the next page!

      • I know 😉 … I might still go get myself a short nap, or at least lie down. Page will probably be up but I feel tired. 65 kids total yesterday because some of the New Year kids just started. A handfull of new kids in the age 2½-3 added to the rest, and a handfull more to come.
So.Much.Noice when all 65 kids are inside.

      • Shhhhhhhh…. 🙂

  • stickfigurefairytales

Be right back – going to make myself cake in a mug.

    • Niggle

      I want a cake in a mug…

    • Niggle

You do realize you must share this recipe? That way we can all bake ourselves cake in a mug for the next page.

      • Ummm I was hoping one of you would just send one to me. No?

        • stickfigurefairytales

It would get awfully cold in transit.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I found a few different recipes online, so I’m going to gradually try them out. Right now they’re all for basic chocolate mug cake. The one I did tonight is:

        -1/4 cup flour
        -2 tablespoons cocoa powder
        -1/4 teaspoon baking powder
        -2 tablespoons sugar
        -1/8 teaspoon salt
-1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon of milk
        -2 tablespoons vegetable oil

First mix all the dry ingredients together (I did my mixing in a small bowl since I find I can mix more thoroughly that way than in the mug), then gradually add the milk and vegetable oil while stirring.

Baking times depend on your microwave – the recipe said they cooked it for 1 minute 10 seconds in a 950 watt microwave. I did about 1 min 15 sec in mine. Then enjoy!

        • Here’s the one I use most.

          4 tbs of flour
          4 tbs sugar
          2 tbs coco
          1 egg
          3 tbs milk
          3 tbs oil
          dash of vanilla
chocolate chips optional (put on top if using)

Same instructions mixing instructions. But our microwave needs 3 minutes.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, thanks! I’ll have to try that one too.

          • SofiaT

You were listing the ingredients and I was counting calories… It always seem less fattening when it’s a whole cake you’re making because you think “I’ll just eat a tiny bit”. Even if you never do.

          • We always split it three ways so we just get a little bite each really. 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

Stay away from my mug cake! *hisses* All for meeee!

          • No no no! The cake lord deigned to make one this evening so yours is safe!

  • Hi All,

Just stopping by to say hello. Not feeling well, my right ear is really hurting right now. Going to curl up on the couch with some hot tea for a bit then go to bed early.

    • Sleep well! This sick bug needs to stop!!! 🙁

    • Feel better soon! Ear pains sucks.

    • Sapfo

      Take care GG.

    • Thanks, everyone. Talk soon!

    • Feel better Gryphon!

    • *hugs* feel better soon sweetie!!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Poor Gryphon. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Sapfo

    Good morning people!
And the news today, We got snow. I repeat, we got 1 mm deep snow. Please go away snow.

    • Good Morning, Ms Sapfo.

      • Sapfo

sorry for almost ending the world yesterday. I will try not to do it again.

        • We appreciate you using your powers for good and not for evil! 🙂

          • Sapfo

ack nei, I think we can to the conclusion that we where not the heroes, but the Villains by Necessity

          • So complicated to be heroes or villains…. 🙂

          • Sapfo

I was trying to be a hero, but it was to much work and I kind of like the cap you get when you are the villain.

          • They do get the best outfits… yep…

          • You’d just think they’d know how to make them fire proof by now.

          • Sapfo

Fire pro… darn it. I be right back. I need to… I be back

          • Remember to do the cape also….!!!!

          • They so often forget the cape…

          • Sapfo

I remember now. But I think the Cape fire proofing shop is not open today. Only the show fire proofing shop is open. Darn all these holidays. (well, I just have to sit back and enjoy my day of. Oh my woe and sorrows. my dark fate)

          • Nope, in the book I’m currently reading FATE is a hot and hunky dude and I’m sure that he would like him some Sapfo… I think things will get good shortly. I really do. 🙂

          • Sapfo

Oh Fate sounds like just the type of dude I like to meet. Does he like to hug?

          • I’m sure with you…. YES!

          • No no no! Fate is a woman. And you don’t mess with Fate!

            What book dares?

          • He’s hot and bossy… surprise!

          • Name of book or I don’t believe you!

        • I’d appreciate it. 😀

    • Morning Sapfo!

    • Now it’s time for a snow man Scandinavian style!!!

      • Sapfo

More sticks and leaves then real snow?

        • With strawberry eyes and a strawberry nose … well you see where I’m going. It’s a Sapfo snowman for sure. (big eyelashes….)…

          • Sapfo

I rather have a was snowman, like in the summer.

          • Heeeeeeee……

    • And please keep it. It’s enough that we get a load of rain and what could be a baad storm here in a couple of days -_-

  • Oh screw it, I’m staying up. I’ll just oversleep if I try to nap now. I have to leave my place in an hour. *yawns and joins the camp for sure*

    • Sapfo

      • >.> Right now you’re my evil pseudo twin. Taunting me with your days off.

        • Sapfo

That I am. And today I am of to the post-office to pick up two packages. At least one of them with the name SF on it 😀

    • Niggle

Sadly I really should sleep. I’ve never been a camper, and I’m behind on sleep already. 8D

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Sleep well, then, Niggle!

        • Niggle

          Thank you. ^_^

      • Sleep well!

        • Niggle

          Thank you, too. ^_^

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hi Danish!

      • Hiiii *yawns big* Cold, dark morning is mean to me.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Nooo, bad morning! Be nice to Danish!

    • Morning Danish sweetie!

    • Good Morning, Ms Wolf!

  • There is a site that lets you play old MS DOS games! I am going to be in and out, but hopefully I survive with most of my group on the Oregan Trail!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Except that $#$^& Ezra. Always getting bitten by snakes and coming down with cholera.

  • Not long now…

    • Sapfo

*make up evil plane for new page*
Would you like some hot coco?

      • D. Garrett

you always get me with the cocoa! *making a cup. im so late!!! fell asleep. *rubs eyes

    • Oh the timing xD I was just saying that *lol*

  • Alright, start your hunter engine because I have to leave the screen on/off for the next 10-20mins.. you know that means there’ll be a pa- *clicks new comment*… SEE!!

  • Saxon_Brenton

[thinks: what can I bring to the discussion?] Well, the family and myself are currently hiding indoors from the heat. I mean, Sapho, can we have that snow? At the very we can send it to Perth, to try and keep the internet from melting again (That’s only slight hyperbole: two days ago it go to over 44 degrees C, and one of the major internet providers didn’t have sufficient air conditioning to keep their servers running. You can guess what happened next.) Anyway, we plan to take the dogs down to the beach in an hour or so.

    • Those days are never fun. It starts burning after 110 F

    • SofiaT

I was cursing myself for leaving summer to come to arctic cold (slightly exaggerating here but it sure does feel like it!), but now I think I may have had the right idea.

    • SofiaT

Which provider was it? I’m with TPG.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Sorry for the lateness, I missed seeing this reply before the page updated. According to the article I read in the Sydney Morning Herald, it was iiNet.

  • And while I commentws to Alex.. new page up:

  • justkeepondriving

Yes, I approve of sexy minion bonus comic! Good idea Alex, you are ever observant and always asking the important questions. 😉

  • Megan Staples

I wish you could send Spooky to my house. My brother is an unwelcome house guest. It’s not my choice, it’s Daddy’s, and I am SO mad at him. Maybe Spooks could teleport my brother to the other side of the world?
Ah, long and long held family drama. Anger, tears and rage. I wish it was exciting enough to make a plot with…
