The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 82

206 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 82

Yes. Let’s. 🙂

Just a heads up — my GPU is failing and thus I am in the middle of the worst computer crashing problems I’ve faced in quite some time. I had to use a friend’s computer to get this update up. And it’s… slow going. So, these are work-in-progress colors. (And exhausted-from-work Alex). My computer issues are not likely to change for a couple weeks, but I will do everything in my power to make sure the updates still get posted in a timely manner. I appreciate your understanding.

You can still get the Kindle version of Artifice at a huge discount for a couple more days. You can get the deal in the U.S. here. And in the U.K. here.

Oh and…

***THIS IS A BONUS PAGE!***

Our seventy-second bonus page in a row! And almost immediately after the last update was posted, y’all managed to tip the donation bar below past its target yet again! That means that, thanks to your generous donations, and in addition to our regular Saturday updates, there will also be bonus pages on Wednesday, December 3rd (page 84!), Wednesday, December 10th (page 86!), Wednesday, December 17th (page 88!), and now an additional bonus page (page 90!) on Wednesday, December 24th! Ho ho ho! Y’all totally ROCK!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporter Michael W. (who makes their fourth generous donation to The Young Protectors!), and a warm welcome and grateful bow go out to new supporter Chris O. for their generous donations over the last few days!

And ZOMG!, double-mega hugs and double-deep grateful bows go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $100 donation, their 122nd stunningly generous donation to this comic, and also to long-time mega-friend Denis T. for their stunningly generous $101 donation, their second stunningly generous donation to this comic. You two are total SUPER-HEROES! THANK YOU!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! The time for plans is over. The time for action is now. And DOKI ALERT – Flyboy is about to have a moment. Curious what that is?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Serious business is serious!

    • >.< And being told Alex had probably just landed, I leave the screen to go to the bathroom and get a snack afterwards. Typical timing *lol*
      Congratz.

      • That’s how it always goes. 😐

        Thanks. A pleasant present!

    • SofiaT

I was about to say they all have their serious faces on.

      …or is that “badass faces”?

      • Serious badass faces?

        • John

I’ve got visions now of (especially Tsunami) practicing in front of a mirror to find a good expression. It’s a serious business after all! 😛

          • Ha! I just bet. It is very serious business. 😀

  • Aaaand.. action!

  • DelorgesDee

    Let’s go save the world!
    Nice.

  • Sapfo

Oh a page is up! And the crowd goes wild!

  • LOL… Alex’ note for Doki. She’ll be squeeing in excitement from now til next page is uploaded 😉

I’ll guess that we get a close-up of Mitch and then the rest getting ready for battle.

    • Yep. The ‘squeeing’ has started. ^_^

      • D. Garrett

you are so lucky! my fave is kyle. cant wait to see a close up of him again.

  • That’s a pretty good pre-battle prep talk there Commander!

  • Klaus

Is it just me, or does this page not do anything? It tells us nothing we did not know, and it does not move the story forward. If you skip it you will have missed nothing.

Sorry to be so negative. Alex, you have set a very high standard for yourself. It is because every other page has been so full of content that this one stands out.

    • silibub

Fair criticism — I think it’s likely the result of working to end Amanda’s speech on a powerful note while also ensuring that whatever Mitch does or says on the next page gets full focus. Last page would have been an awkward/grim spot for Amanda’s talk to wrap up.

      • John

Indeed. I, for one, found it a stirring and climatic end.

    • Maus Merryjest

I’d say that sometimes you have to end a speech on a good recapitulation. It doesn’t add anything new, but it does bring the speech to a good close.

      • D. Garrett

it makes me think of coaches and how they brace the players for the challenges to come and try to help them get in the best possible mind frame to be successful. I think this part of the speech is essential for the teams morale and focus.

    • I’m with the crowd on this Klaus. I’m guessing, but this one of those whole sections that is going to read very differently on page-timing than weekly update-timing (I KNOW you know this). So, I quite like this ‘character’ page that ended on a strong note from a strong leader. Sometimes the character information IS the plot information but we’ll only know as it proceeds.

If Amanda is wrong (which in some ways every leader must prepare for) and one of her team is hurt in any fashion, she will carry that responsibility. It’s part of what makes us like her so much.

I guess we have a long way to go and we’ll be able to decide for ourselves. I like the tone here and think it was the right ending for this scene full of speculation and possibilities.

      • Klaus

Actually I didn’t think of that. But you are of course right. When you can just go on to the next page, in a printed book or on the web once the next oages are up, it will be very different.

  • silibub

Short, sweet, and inspiring. Amanda’s got this pre-battle huddle thing down. And I’m really looking forward to Mitch’s moment in the sun.

Alex, I hope you rest well and your computer issues are resolved without undue torment, cost, and animal sacrifice. (Pretty sure there’s a goat shortage these days, anyway.) I know all of us appreciate your dedication to the comic and regular updates more than we can say, so thanks!

  • Xalun K

I love the fact that Amanda addressed Mitch directly here – as an important member of the team. As an EQUAL.

Alex, good luck on getting your computer up and running (or another computer). I know what it’s like and how much it sucks! Hopefully you’ve got something worked out soon (and not just for our benefit, but for your own!!!)! 😀

  • …. ‘Let’s go save the world’.

What a goal for your first real battle. No pressure there 😉

I like how Amanda gives them hope, and her belief in them being able to do it, but she doesn’t sugar coat it either. They’re in one hell of a situation, and they haven’t had a lot of time to digest the full scale of it.

‘Lets’ go save the world’. Now, that’s hitting it home here at the brink of the first battle.

    • Klaus

If you don’t let the inexperienced go into battle unless it is very, very important, they are going to go inexperienced into that very, very important battle.

  • John

Um… if you hadn’t told me those were WIP colours I would never have known. 🙂

Also Alex, I may be in a minority here but if you need a break from updating to fix your computer that’s fine. I know how annoying it can be trying to meet a regular deadline without the tools you’re accustomed to.

    • Thank you, John. 🙂 I really appreciate that understanding.

My friends give me concerned looks, but Adam, Vero and I really do approach posting timely updates as a sacred duty. Next year, I might need to take a short break to perform Web site maintenance and other, more personal, tasks (like finally being able to go on a meditation retreat, which I haven’t been able to do since I launched Artifice.) And if my computer is so broken I can’t post, well then it’s out of my hands. But until either of those events happen, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure an update is posted no later than 11:59 PST on Wednesday and Saturday (and if I can post earlier, then I will.)

Y’all show such awesome support with your camping and donations and kind words, I just don’t want to let you down. 🙂

      • Yes, but we don’t want you to break. 🙂 Seriously, if all you can get up is a text note to say that you can’t upload the comic, better to do that than end up making youself ill from not enough sleep.

(Hoping this goes through — I haven’t been commenting recently because Disqus doesn’t like my new computer and most of the time I can’t even see the comments.)

  • AseretZone

Nicely said. And since I missed it on the previous page, I’ll say it here. I like how she reminded them that the plan CAN and WILL go sour, and not everything will be as planned, and even brings up the possibility of soem of them dying in this battle. And in this page she talked about how she knows they can do it and is counting on all of them because she knows they’ll get through this.

Amanda is a good leader. She’s strong-willed, she knows her team from back to front, and she knows that they won’t let her down but she understands perfectly, considering what they’re up against, that they may not do so well and that’s okay. She knows they’ll do their best, and if they lose it’s not because someone failed them, it’s because they got overpowered.

  • Toli Bera

alright, taking bets on what’s gonna happen next.

  • TwilightDreamer

wahoo!! forward to battle everyone! >:D
Man, I’m worried about what’s going to go wrong….cause something is so going to go wrong…just what is the question.
Non the less, can’t wait to see what happens!

  • Klaus

No, I don’t think Doki is curious. Not the least bit. No.

  • Wildroses

Oh come on! I take a long hiatus, come back thinking: “Ooh, it’s been a while, I’m sure lots of stuff has happened and I’m past the looming cliffhangers I could see coming” and THIS comic is the latest one available! XD

Well, to be fair, a lot of stuff has happened. The team members are working through the fallout of discovering the two big revelations about Kyle, they’ve found the spot and made plans, and the conversation hinting at the Platinum Priestess and Duncan’s motives certainly counts as “lots of stuff”. I’d just been kind of hoping the showdown would have started so I wouldn’t be back to weekly cliffhangers.

That conversation of the supervillains kind of undercuts Amanda’s speech for me. I can’t help feeling that even if the plan goes exactly like Amanda says and they succeed in stopping the ritual and saving the sacrifices, they’ve still lost. If Duncan has moral qualms about a plan he knows will cause much suffering but has decided he has to do it anyway to prevent worse suffering, he must be seriously afraid of something.

  • Nate

Well, I see two possibilities. Mitch either has a badass moment…

Or comes out with an “if we don’t make it, I want you to know I’m in love with you” moment.

Accent on the “coming out”. 🙂

(I’ll leave it to the group to decide who he’s addressing)

    • Klaus

“If you are taken out, I am not going to be much use up there. You will not be able to give new orders. What should I do?”

    • john Johnson

Your suggestion might make for some interesting plot twists. A good luck kiss before going into battle?

  • fujoshifanatic

Excellent pre-battle pep talk, Amanda! I know the team will do you proud. 🙂 I think it will be uber cute if Mitch has a doki moment with/towards Kyle. We have already established the orientations of all the boys on the team except for Mitch; I think it would be cool to find out Mitch plays for Kyle’s team, and would like to go to bat with him if given the chance, so to speak, I think it was mentioned before how this would be a nice pairing for Kyle in that he would be able to go really slow with Mitch, while he learns to better control his powers, so that when the relationship heats up, things can get hot in the right way, as opposed to the very dangerous (and portal-to-Hell-opening) way it was with Duncan. I totally ship it!

So sorry to hear about your computer problems Alex! Considering your track record with updates, I think most of us will have no problems with any delays you might experience, as you have more than proven your dedication to this comic and its followers. I hope you can resolve your computer problems soon (maybe a quick plea to Santa will do the trick?), and if you want to take up a donation for the cause, I would be willing to contribute, even though I am between jobs right now. Just let us know! 🙂

    • Columbine

When and where were the other boys orientations established? Because I don’t remember seeing anyone other than Kyle in a relationship (or talking about one) in the comics. The closest I can think of is Spooky finding that website. I feel like I’m missing out!

      • Cydney Sabin

It was actually Fluke who found that website. But Spooky was totally into it. So I’d take that as he’s secure in his sexuality, whatever it may be. Same with Fluke. As for Tsunami, it’s pretty obvious how he feels about the same gender because of his reactions towards the same site. At least, that’s what I figure. I, too, haven’t seen anything 100% concrete on anyone other than Kyle.

        • Klaus

He objected to porn of him and his friends. He may have objected as strongly to straight porn. Though his statement that it would “ruin you for life” (to Flyboy) is way over the top.

          • Cydney Sabin

He didn’t really seem to object until he found out there weren’t any girls. I honestly think that he mostly objected to being paired with kids, as he saw it.

        • Columbine

          Ah yes so it was.

I’m not sure Tsunami’s reaction necessarily establishes his orientation though. He could be highly insecure and closeted while still being gay or bi. I agree that seems kinda unlikely at the moment but it does happen.

The only one I have a ‘gut’ feeling about is The Commander. I think (with no evidence) she’s ace. And hey it’s a yaoi comic so her orientation matters nadda, which pleases me.

    • Thank you very much for the kind words and the kind suggestion of a donation fund. 🙂 While a new computer would be lovely, it’s not necessary—what I need is an Apple Store and the ability to stay in one place for longer than a few days. Which will happen, just not for the next couple weeks. 🙂 But you’re a sweetheart and thank you.

  • Pikinanou

*cue badass music as the team make their slow-mo badass entrance* F-yeeeaaahhh!

  • JesBelle

Sorry for your technical difficulties, Alex, says the girl with the puffy capacitors on her motherboard.

  • Cydney Sabin

I got the chills reading Commander’s speech, and then… “DOKI ALERT” and I just busted out laughing. Scared my poor dog, too.

  • JozefAL

This may be a bit nitpicky, but why did the guys all move around during Commander’s speech? In the first panel, Kyle is basically standing in front of her but by the last panel, from her perspective, he’s the right-most in line while Spooky started off on Commander’s far right and by the last panel, he’s second from the left. It just sort of distracted me.

    • At first I thought… yeah.. but I think what you’re mentioning is an illusion caused by camera movement and the fact that Amanda is addressing each line to a different team member (sorta) so her head moves, changing what the camera sees of her face, and her eye-line in every panel.

If this were film you wouldn’t be able to afford to set and light a separate camera setup for each line of dialog, so this is one of those few things that Alex, Adam and Vero get to do in comics that no one else can. It works here for me because I wasn’t jarred on the first read, which is actually due to the fact that Adam keeps everyone rooted.

So, the camera, and who Amanda was looking at, shifted cleverly from panel to panel. Here’s what I saw:

P#1: Amanda is looking (mostly) toward Mitch and Paul to her left and the camera is viewing her from Spooky’s POV, looking at her right profile.

P#2: No one moves feet, but the camera now moves up above Spooky/Tsunami’s head and Amanda swings her eye-line around and looks to Tsunami (and Kyle?).

P#3: Camera drops down between/behind Tsunami and Kyle and, in somewhat of an upshot, Amanda looks directly at Tsunami.

P#4: I like to think we’re looking out of Kyle’s eyes and she’s saying this directly to him. “We’re going to show them, they’re wrong.” Her promise to Kyle, the injured party.

P#5: Camera directly over Amanda’s left (facing her, ‘left’) shoulder and she appears to be addressing the whole team.

I found it fun to see if I could find any meaning in who I thought she was directing a particular line to, but it’s seemed mostly fun speculation and whatever one appreciates. Great page.

      Enjoy.

  • *squeeeee* You know I am Alex!!! I have been curious ever since I got the Mitch card you signed for me!!! Unless this isn’t the scene you mentioned? But I am going to assume it is. ^_^

    • I need to know more about that card xD

      • ^_^

        • Mir

Oh god now the anticipation has grown stronger within me.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

So , the show will be on the road next time. Can’t wait!

  • bronakopdin

whaaaaat!!! A Mitch Moment!!!! I’m hyperventilating here 😀

and I wondered at first glance that the page looked a bit off so it’s still in stage of colouring!

so now it’s time… to cross out fingers… the question is to whcih outcome though D:
I inda hope ou guys will somehow succeed… but then we all discussed how something kinda MUST go wrong there x’D
and we Still know about that Sircea and Duncan talk about it being neccessary to actually save the world…. IF Sircea told the truth… *sigh*

I’m kinda done speculating, it just blows my brain these days xD
so I guess I’ll just sit back and watch what’s going to happen now

… in my totally hyper mode… xD

  • Epistasthai

    gotta remember to breathe…

thanks for the update. I sure hope you get your computer woes sorted, and soon at that. Don’t worry about us (I know you’re gonna ignore me and worry anyway). Still, we understand, and really, you’ve always made your (self-imposed) deadlines. So please don’t ruin your Thanksgiving worrying about trying to post the new pages “on time”. We’ll still be here!

Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Thank you, Epistasthai! 😀 If you celebrate Thanksgiving, I wish the same for you!

  • stickfigurefairytales

I actually really enjoy it when we get to see WiP colors before the finished version – it’s so cool to see how things evolve as the page nears completion. I’m so excited for the upcoming Flyboy moment, too!

    • justkeepondriving

      I totally agree! It’s like a behind-the-scenes or how-things-work sneak peek 🙂

  • Oh, I was so hoping for a big battle scene today!

  • Nick Finkbeiner

Because of the Wednesday bonus pages, page 88 is coming out on my birthday.

  • “but..
“..the ritual sort of has to be completed, or everyone on earth will be boned anyway.”

    right?

    • Klaus

“There is always another way.” Ernaldan proverb. (You see, I just finished Guide to Glorantha.)

      • (dweeb)

ugh.. ..this long, torturous wait, klaus. . . . .

      • In order to share in any dweebishness…

I just finished a wonderful re-read of THE DOSADAI EXPERIMENT by the late Frank Herbert.

“Justice belongs to those who claim it, but let the claimant beware lest he create new injustice by his claim and thus set the bloody pendulum of revenge into its inexorable motion.”
        ~Gowachin aphorism

    • … problem the potential bonification?

  • *Comes to look at page and comments*

Oh god, I need this right now. One of my fave comics just got cancelled – the place I used to spend almost every wednesday night camping for the last 4 years.
I’m so happy about the lovely community here, and that I’ll still have a place to camp – even if my early wednesday camps might be cut short for a while (leaving early-ish for a course).

Now I’ll sit here a litle and flip through the comic and my favorite pages and panels. A bit of great friendship (and some Spooky) should be able to help the mood a little <3

    • LimpBiskit

Yeah, saw that. Also saw that comments are being policed. Probably a smart idea.

    • Mir

What comic is it if you don’t mind me asking?

      • Teahouse Comic. The artists got careers started that didn’t allow time for pages anymore.

        • Mir

Holy moly.. I knew they got new careers but I thought it was just on hiatus for awhile.

          • It started that way, but they simply realized that it wouldn’t work in the long run so instead of putting more stress on their shoulders they took the hard decission now.

          • Derkins

Nuuuuuuu I *SO* wanted to see where that last scene was going. They were finally getting to some real character development *flails*

          • Lynda Depe-Taylor

            WHAAAAT?

*Sits in a corner and bawls*

            http://www.teahousecomic.com/comic/?id=219

          • D. Garrett

thanks for the link. i literally shed a tear. so sad its ended but im glad they will tell us how the relationships proceed. *lights a candle for comfort.

        • Derkins

          awwwww :(((

    • Mia

You’ve come here! ^^ I used to look for your comments on TH but it’s nice to see a familiar face on here–didn’t know you read this but I guess it makes sense.

    • stickfigurefairytales

*hugs you* I was so sorry to hear about Teahouse – I know a number of people here are huge fans. I’m glad we can still be here for you!

    • Missy_Z

Yes, Teahouse ending, and Starfighter ending soonish makes sort of an end of an era. What would we do without YP? At least with Starfighter we know we also have more ahead with the game coming out. I respect EmiRain for their decision as life is life, but it still doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking. Plus their art is BEAUTIFUL! At least I can see you around several other comics I haunt, Danish, I always love your insights.

    • D. Garrett

      oooohhhhh nooooo! ;_;

    • Alan Michael Williams

Oh, man! Sad. Not to be selfish, but I’ve been working on a translation of the comic since 2012, and I’d REEALLY like to be on the links list, even if things have come to an abrupt end. Sent them a final email…. hopeful, but….

      http://teahousecomic-de.blogspot.com/

Anyway, I know how you feel… I was around at Yaoi-Con 2011, when the comic was still fairly new, but already popular. And the last 3 years, been checking in practically weekly. I haven’t been an avid camper, but I’ve certainly put many hours into pondering the Teahouse universe. I think my favorite scene is the marketplace, because it felt like the world was finally opening up, and Ivore coming to life.

My only hope is that something just as good, if not better, emerges to fill the niche. (Those who don’t have the print versions should grab them while they still can!!!!)

*sigh* The Teahouse universe will be sorely missed. Even Remy.

    • alex

If you are still in contact with E and CC. Will you ask them if they
will let the fans finish the comic? If I was quitting a webcomic I would
outsource it if people want to continue it.

  • LimpBiskit

Can’t wait for the print book 🙂

  • Mir

I was wallowing in bad feelings earlier then I remembered it was Wednesday, jolted up from my bed, and turned on my computer for this lovely update.

Please no one die for the sake of Kyle’s character development. I mean, that would be cool but I love everyone in the team so let them live- dammit!

I REALLY can’t wait to see the confrontation of Kyle and Duncan. Kyle needs to talk some serious smack into that old man and I have been waiting for it ever since his true intentions were revealed.

  • First, Alex, horrors on the computer front, and all good luck. Sucky stuff to have to deal with over the holidays which are always full and yet you three still turn out these pages! And trust me I’m surely one of many who will be truly grateful all through Christmas. TYP lifts me up and it’s such a great thing to look forward to, even when I know you three should probably be wrapping presents… Well, I guess you are, they’re just for us. So thanks for that.

Also thanks for the technical heads-up… you never miss a page, but if you ever needed to, it really feels better to know what’s going on. As @fujoshifanatic:disqus said nicely below, you have support out here. The Kickstarter was for a page a week and LOTS of stretch goals, that I’m salivating over. The Extra-Page fund is for exactly that. All of that assumes that your Kontari alien tech AI continues to function as expected. Should you experience a serious unexpected problem, I’d bet a lot of people would contribute a dollar to keep your AI functioning. (Just sayin’).

I really enjoyed this page as a firm strong punctuation to an entire scene full of speculative possibilities. I know my reader’s nerves ran amuck as we all tried to figure out what pieces of their planning might work and what wouldn’t, who would be fine and who needs to be in the sequel (KIDDING)…

This was a lovely character page that really cemented Amanda’s maturity, the responsibility that she feels to ALL the team members and the fact that I suspect she, more than any of them, knows this will NOT go as planned and is frantically trying to position them for maximum success and safety. I’d take her for a boss any day.

Adam and Veronica, I love the evolving facial expressions of the entire team as they listen to her throughout the page. That last panel is particularly emotive, with everyone’s feelings on their faces. Really nicely done. In all their variety, the entire team LOOKS wonderful.

Thank you guys for another wonderful page as we transition into the next step of the adventure and a Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

    • Thank you very much for the kind words and thoughtful take on this page and our work, Chris. I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving as well! 🙂

  • Derkins

That last line serves as quite an effective segue. We’re entering a new phase of this comic, people. At least, that’s the feeling I get. (I also get the feeling that Amanda knows what the heck she’s talking about.)
I guess I can do my archetypal “hero’s journey” rant schtuff, if you dig it.

  • davefragments

I meant to get back this morning and never did. Too much to do in preparation for tomorrow’s “Death by stuffing and tryptophan” extravaganza.

When I”m camping, I’m basically in bed and sometimes a blink turns into five or ten minutes of sleep. That’s when I know to stop camping. Unless the clock strikes 2:00am then I go to sleep regardless.

I like this page. It’s a great punctuation point to end the “observation” of Sircea’s and Duncan’s spell thingie and any planning that goes with it. We should now see the real battle take place.
And I will tell you something more that I expect, the real battle is going to go so poorly that Laampros will appear and the fate of the world will be left to (quite possibly) Kyle and Duncan (our two errant lovers) in a grand climax of fire and magic.
    Maybe, I’m guessing.
Who lives and who dies? Well I don’t think Kyle is going to die but I”m not sure about Duncan. I think Sircea is toast, either dragged to the hell dimension or foisted on her own magic. I want to be able to cheer that so it better be spectacular. At least as spectacular as some of the other pages.
In fact, Commander raising Sircea’s head on a pike might be fun but that’s only because I binge watched several episodes of SPARTACUS on Starz tonight instead of listening to political stuff.
So no pressure on the author, just a wish list of things and a hope that you can crush. wink, wink.

    • Steven K.

Oh – on other matters – your stuffing sounds tasty Dave. 😛

      • davefragments

Thank you. It’s a plain stuffing so use herbs and spices to give it your own version of what ever excites your taste buds.

    • “…the fate of the world will be left to (quite possibly) Kyle and Duncan (our two errant lovers) in a grand climax of fire and magic.”

Oh Dave, Dave, Dave (chuckles), while it’s true that thou has expressed the desires of many, right there. I must remind the hoi polloi that I am still in the SAME (hear that Alex Woolfson?) place I was low those many years ago, when our little Kyle went unwillingly to Hell, robbed of agency, and was forcibly (and most vilely) monologued to, naked, in a freezing warehouse and even required to call friends for a ride home (honestly, it was the naked monologuing and lack of even cab fare on the dresser that I now see as the real crime against nature and Kyle). Duncan clearly learned it all from Sircea.

So, I’m just saying I require any errant love or smoochy behavior between heroes and villains in my direct line of sight to be preceded by significant villain grovelling. I have not been distracted by floating cool cars, glompy Spooky hugs (okay I was a little distracted by my Spooky, jet rides with a dubious and grumpy Tsunami, Spooky’s magic cheerios, and Amanda’s on-the-spot battle planning…

GROVEL: • act in an obsequious manner in order to obtain someone’s forgiveness or favor:..

So, I’m just sayin’ — while not as totally closed to groveling (lots) followed by some smoochiness as I once might have been (and I’m talking really believable obsequious non-monologish groveling)… I still reserve the right ape Maggie Smith in the classic “The Prime Of Miss Jean Brody” and level my finger at Duncan and yell across a busy battle-field, “ASSASSIN!”

      (oh? where was I?)

Just wanted to mention that ANY, “errant love and climaxing of fire and magic” still comes with a prior to-do list.

      Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

      • davefragments

And a very happy thanksgiving to you and all that read this.

      • purplefoxglove

“Grovelling”, “obsequious”…I learn so many nice words from you, Chris 🙂

  • justkeepondriving

“All right, Mitch. Let’s go save the world.” “Yes. Let’s.

  • Happy Thanksgiving to all.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Happy Thanksgiving!

    • Happy Thanksgiving!

  • S+

Thank you, Alex, for having her say, “We’re going to show them,” rather than, “We’re gonna show them.” I’m so tired of “gonna” everywhere. I have even seen it in non-fiction writing lately. It is refreshing to see some respect for written English. Thank you.

  • Megan Staples

    Happy Thanksgiving, friends!

    • D. Garrett

      Happy turkey doom day.

  • D. Garrett

my favorite panel is the last one. they all look ready to kick ass. proof of the success of amanda’s speech. i must admit that she is a good leader.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Just a quick question on foreshadowing that I don’t recall anybody commenting on so far. Back on in July Commander asked Spooky whether the presence of Red Hot was likely to hinder the team’s efforts, and on page 45 Spooky replied that if anything was going to even the odds in the Young Protectors’ favour it would be their “very own prince of Hell.”

So, does the fact that Commander’s plan for attacking Team Silver’s ritual *does not* use Red Hot’s purported hellish rank mean the plan is doomed? Or am I reading it too literally in an attempt to anticipate what Alex is up to?

    • John

I don’t think the Commander WOULD involve Red-hots Princely status as we don’t know how the effect would manifest. It may actually help the summoning that Laampy’s kid is on the other side. Some sort of resonance effect.

      Too many unknowns.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Oh, I agree absolutely that there’s no way Commander would base a plan on that factor. I’m wondering whether it’s some sort of plot marker for the audience’s benefit. I guess I’m being far too meta.

  • My nephew’s 11th birthday party has just reconfirmed my desire to never intentionally have kids. Not long into to it I was thinking “I could use a a good stiff drink”, too bad they didn’t have any alcohol for the adults. Definitely going to invest in some ear plugs so next year I don’t go deaf.

    • Children do get loud.

      • That and the building we were in made 11 kids sound like 50. -_-

        • Oh even worse, bad acoustics.

          • One of the things that really bothers me though is that my BiL got my nephew a real gun for his birthday. Why I love my nephew: he was more excited about the bubble wrap around the gun than the gun itself. My sister wasn’t too happy about the gun either. She even tried to talk him out of giving it to him because he has bb guns that he never plays with. Slightly worried that my BiL is going to try to force my nephew into something he doesn’t like just to satisfy his own desires.

          • I don’t think that’s so uncommon. It would just be better if he wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer instead.

Guns scare me. So easily misused.

          • I have never liked guns. I am a bow and arrow girl. ^_^

          • I so want to learn to handle a bow. I would also love to learn to use a sword. Both such elegant weapons.

          • YES!!!

          • I just don’t know if I would have an easy time with the bow, considering the size of my chest. Sigh. Still want to learn though.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I just went to see Mockingjay, part 1, so that was instantly where my mind went when you mentioned bows and arrows.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Is this the same brother-in-law who kept losing the two-year-old he was supposed to be watching?

          • No, the other one. The one married to my older sister. I never really liked him much.

          • stickfigurefairytales

To be honest, it sounds to me like neither one is particularly pleasant.

          • Well I like the younger BiL a little bit better because we are both a bit geeky so we actually have some common ground.

          • Zazu: “There is one in every family, Sire; TWO in mine!”

          • “They always manage to ruin special occasions.”

  • Today is Friday, yes?

    • Yep, A lot of people might be in food comas from yesterday though.

      • I think I was in one, sorta still am in one. My brother and SIL came up today so a bunch of food for lunch, then left overs for dinner. My schedule’s all off. I almost forgot my dog’s pill because I forgot to have my phone with me where I have an alarm set. And I completely forgot about camping. >.<

        • It doesn’t help that the leftovers are just as sleep-inducing as the night before. There ought to be a law…

          • Thanksgiving leftovers are a sacred right! …out of my cold dead hands… or well food coma induced hands.

I am so full. But I REGRET NONE OF IT!!

          • A dear friend said “I’m still full” earlier and I replied, “Darling, don’t eat the plate with the turkey. It isn’t a taco salad.”

          • HA! But what is Thanksgiving without busting a button. As George Takei said: Don’t forget to set your scale back five pounds. 😀

          • To hell with only five pounds. That was at least a 12 pound bird!

          • Ours was almost 15lbs (they didn’t have anything smaller, but we had a coupon so it was half price so what the hell right?). Then filled with homemade stuffing (I baked the bread we used for it).

          • My mom always made dressing and stuffing with our birds. I come from a family where the meat is perhaps a little too fresh for some. I’m rather uncomfortable seeing my ham on the hoof before it is cooked.

          • I really don’t want to know the poor beast before I eat it.

But the whole thing was cooked well. So… Mmmm stuffing.

          • stickfigurefairytales

We also had a 15lb turkey (with only three of the four people present eating turkey). But fortunately we have lots of delicious plans for all the leftovers!

          • Mmmmmm leftovers. We only have three people too, so lots of leftover bird.

  • peeks into the chat room wondering if the party started yet.

    • Hahahahahaha! You mean have we (at least those in the US) started rolling our bodies in, still full from Thanksgiving.

      • I live in Georgia, USA so I know all about rolling. I also bounce well. How is everyone?

        • I’m doing well. Other than rolling. 😀 And you?

          • Not unwell, thank you. 🙂 Jonesing for the new page. I remember how Alex has computer trouble and add to that holiday woes. My prayers are with him. OH!!! Have you seen the Star Wars teaser trailer?

          • Yes. I love the X-wings skimming the lake. ^_^

          • That was a highlight for me, yes. I also enjoyed the rolly-polly droid. At least they’re trying new things!

          • James Wade

Yes that is a fantastic scene.

          • I did. I can’t wait! I just hope it’s better than the episodes that shall not be uttered.

          • I broke into shivers of excitement when the original music broke into the scene and the Millennium Falcon flew in against a couple TIE fighters. I am so stoked! Oh, and yes, Admiral you are so right about never invoking the names of the episode travesties. Thou shalt not suffer a gungan to live! Eat colander you freakish frog! ahem

          • I heard there was a new John Williams score?

          • You heard correctly. I heard about it from the composer on “Star Wars: Rebels.”

          • Yup yup and yup!

          • James Wade

            So say we all.

          • Ooh, a “Battlestar Galactica” reference! tippity-tap I can’t help it; I’m a colossal geek.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I almost forgot what night it was! Glad I remembered in time.

    • I did forget until about 8:03 (pst)

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I’m glad you remembered, though!

        • Me too! I mean, it’s kinda my job to remember. Dang food coma.

    • ‘Allo Stick! How goes your day?

      • stickfigurefairytales

Hi, Donald! My day was quite nice, thank you. How about yours?

        • Quiet, just how I like my Black Fridays. Thanks for asking! Oh, gods, did I just quote Big Gay Al? hides

          • Steven K.

We can classify “Thanks for asking!” as just a nicety or bit of politeness. If you had said “I’m fabulous! Thanks for asking!”, then we’d put the Big Gay Al stamp on you.

          • Whew, that was close!

    • Evening Stick!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Good evening, Doki!

    • stickfigurefairytales

And even then, only in Portland.

  • Sapfo

I guess all my American friends still sitting with full stomachs after yesterday’s eating and can not write because they are completely exhausted after the day’s action. Hoping that you had a good holiday.

    • So full!!

      • Sapfo

And you can still typ? Wow, you most be made of stronger stuff 😉

        • Well sitting in front of a computer is the easy part. Loose pants help as well.

        • I’m accustomed to typing over my belly. Tragic, I know but everybody has a gift. This is mine.

          • Sapfo

With great power comes great responsibility 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I did, thank you!! :D|(O)=

(It’s hard to tell but that is supposed to be a person with a huge full belly.)

      • Sapfo

        Oh I could tell 😀

  • Mir

I shall camp with the fact in mind that Alex is having computer problems. Hopefully everything is alright.

  • Hello Youngsters. The evil headache is sadly preventing me from really camping this night, so I will retreat to my couch and come back a little later to see if there’s still a camp or a page waiting for me.

    • Feel better. Evil headaches are the pits.

      • DemureDesire

Is there such a thing as a non-evil headache?

        • Well, technically no, but I do believe there is a scale of evilness.

    • Morning Danish *gives headache massage*

    • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, I hope you feel better soon!

    • Sapfo

      Take care Wolf.
Trying to do some cleaning for party tomorrow. so I am camping, but not always infron of the laptop

  • *pets shiny new laptop* I had to watch some Supernatural for a bit before coming on… trying to catch up again…

    • ….so how long did shiny new laptop remain innocent?

      • It’s mainly going to be the bf’s laptop… but not for long. Saving for him for first run once he gets home. He is spoiled…

    • Oooh, shiny shiny!

    • Sapfo

So you got it! Lucky you. 😀

      • I wish I could send one of these to Alex though too… 🙁

  • I really really really really really want the next page to upload soonish…..the curiosity and excitement is getting to me…

    • Sapfo

Oh you only want your Doki shot of Mich 😉

      • Alex promised me a _________ Mitch scene! The curiosity has been eating at me for ages!! (well it feels like that long)

        • Sapfo

Who knows. Maybe it is a intermission scene where we see Mitch does pranks on the other team members.

    • Not long now…

  • Missy_Z

? It’s Friday night already? I think my food coma from yesterday has messed with my ability to tell what day it is. I was convinced it was Wednesday when I woke up.

    • I sorta knew it was Friday, but I had to keep reminding myself that Friday wasn’t the holiday. 😐

  • Sapfo

Just found out that a friend of mine is going to have visit from half around the world. They meet over WoW. I so like it when people meet people and suddenly you have friends all over the world. 😀

  • silibub
  • It’s a testament to how well the dialog is written that when Commander started detailing her plan, I became so engrossed I forgot to jot down my comments lol.
