Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Looks like Flyboy thinks he’s got a little game (can he really fly at Mach 2 and lift a mountain?!). Will Commander let him stretch his wings in battle? And what will he do if the answer is “no”?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Mitch <3 So many awesome powers .. if they're controlled.

    • silibub

Lots of Mitch! Nice snag — you came outta nowhere.

      • I sat down like 2-3mins before the page. Was just opening my usual tabs 🙂
Good thing I went directly for the computer instead of doing as previous update where I went to make food first – and the page had just updated 7mins before when I sat down about 10-15mins after getting up *lol*

        • stickfigurefairytales

Your instincts were right on the money!

  • stickfigurefairytales

    MITCH IS ALWAYS THE LOOKOUT.

  • davefragments

yay danish and here is the rest of the plan that might never actually work.

    More Mitch, too.
    mmm he does surveillance, too

  • The poor baby.

  • TwilightDreamer

aawwww…. 🙁 poor Mitch…I understand what Amanda is saying, and every role counts of course, but still….

  • *grumbles* Oh course while I was in the lady’s room….

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Dang it!

    • Saxon_Brenton

Condolences. But on the positive side: lots of Fly Boy.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Paul looks actively interested in seeing Mitch drop a mountain on somebody.

    • TwilightDreamer

I’d love to just see him lift a mountain! didn’t think he could do that 😛

      • stickfigurefairytales

Now they just need to recruit someone who can slice through the base of mountains.

        • TwilightDreamer

          lol!

    • It is hecka cool…

      • davefragments

G’Kar on Babylon Five called them “mass drivers”

      • Adam Black

        Alex,
Can flyboy have weightless sex ( if he wanted to ) ?

        • Ummmm….

          • Adam Black

Oh, you must have thought of this!
Are you saving this for a future Patreon reward?

        • Garnasha

Ah, good old Power Perversion Potential.

    • I’m thinking this could require fan art. Wonder if it would be like when Dorothy’s house fell on the wicked witch.

  • silibub

It’s so great to learn more about Mitch’s abilities, and they’re really versatile! I wonder what it is about his flight power that makes him able to left such heavy objects, too…like levitation by proximity. I like that he’s put a lot of thought into his powers, and it should be heartening to him that Amanda’s given it serious consideration as well. And at least her reasons for keeping him on the ship are primarily strategic, and not just “You’re the team baby, no fighting for you!”

The image of Duncan getting pegged by a flying boulder’s good for a chuckle, too.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m imagining the cartoon foot that comes down to squish things in the Monty Python opening.

      • silibub

        Haha, perfect!

        • stickfigurefairytales

Especially with the fart noise sound effect.

    • I admit, I did picture Duncan getting hit with the boulder and toppling like bowling pins.

      • silibub

Yep, just *doof* and then sailing out of frame, no traumatic injury necessary. Goes right in hand with the minions punching each other in the face earlier.

        • Ha! Yes. A bit like when the Hulk punches Thor in the Avengers.

  • You know….if your excuse for keeping him actively out of things is because he is the “least experienced” of the group, how is he ever going to get said experience?

    • TwilightDreamer

      hear hear!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Although I guess I can see how you wouldn’t want somebody’s first active combat experience to be against two of the world’s most powerful supervillains.

      • Gah, I am getting dizzy/light headed….

Well, he would gain more experience from participating in a fight against those two, then any other confrontation.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Good point. (But oh no! Do you need to lie down? Or eat something?)

          • Yeah, I think I am going to lie down, maybe go to bed

          • stickfigurefairytales

Okay, have a good night! Love you!

          • You too and >///< ditto.

  • DC

Giving the Commander a bird’s eye view of the fight is very important Mitch, but I’m still imagining you drop that boulder on Duncan’s head. Thank you for that image 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Why can’t he do both?

      • DC

Absolutely he can do both. I’ve been thinking he would try something if he sees the fight going all not as planned and step in to help.

  • Holly

Called it, stay in the Ship. Also I am sad that I missed the virgin because I was brushing my teeth 🙁

    • silibub

Can’t be helped — Danish is a ninja. I thought I had it and she swooped in before I could hit post!

      • Holly

yeah but I wasn’t even in the race

  • I still feel that spark of resentment beginning to grow. I’m hoping I’m wrong, but I’m imagining always being left out of the action. There he is so desperately trying to find things he’s capable of doing to be useful and yet constantly being shot down. It’s like geyser waiting to explode, but a big boulder keeping it sealed in. Soon and at a bad time, BOOM!

    • Saxon_Brenton

Last comments page someone joked that it might lead to Fly Boy getting resentful and betraying the team. I don’t buy that, but I am willing to buy a situation where Fly Boy disobeys orders to rescue the team from Certain Doom(tm).

      • stickfigurefairytales

        That I could definitely see.

      • I’m with you. I’m certain he would just have enough and fly into danger to try to help his team. To bad consequences.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Nooooooo, damn you, consequences!

          • Bad, Consequences, bad! You always ruin things.

          • Klaus

            Damn the torpedos.

          • …and full speed and head. (wait… something is wrong with that…)

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh, I hope not! Poor little guy.

    • silibub

It could be, although I think he seems pretty reasonable about it on this page. It’s clear he’s been wanting to make his case for why he should be more involved for a while, and he’s given the potential applications of his powers some good thought, but in the end he’s still willing to follow Amanda’s orders.

But yeah, the stuff he says in the first panel is concerning because it shows he does feel undervalued. He believes they think his powers are dumb and he’s only good for carting them around — I wonder if he got to that conclusion on his own due to being kept out of the action, or if the others might have teased him about his powers in the past and he took it more seriously than they meant it. Either way, I really hope he doesn’t feel like an outsider in his own team — that would be awful.

      • At 15, there are just so many emotions. A kid, but so close to adulthood you can taste it. Wanting to be taken seriously. And yet always relegated to “just a kid” and “no experience” or “leave it to the adults”

I don’t think the team undervalues him, but are they making an effort to let him know just how valued he is? Granted the whole team are babies, but I’d hope they’re grown enough to think beyond the youthful “me me me” syndrome.

        • silibub

I think they all probably come from backgrounds that forced them to grow up fast, although that doesn’t necessarily mean they’d know how to reassure Mitch that he belongs. As leader, Amanda can help by making sure Mitch’s contributions are acknowledged, and by listening to him and making an effort to see where he could be useful (which she’s doing now).

It’s rough in general being 15 and trying to get the respect of people in their late teens to early twenties — there’s a gap in experience and maturity there that’s hard to bridge, and in an environment like this it probably really would help for Mitch to be a more involved and visible member of the team, to prove that he’s just as capable as the others even at his age.

          • Exactly this. Not treating him like an annoying little brother tagging along it would go a long way to alleviate any worries Mitch holds. Considering he is part of the team and not a mascot.

      • Klaus

Amanda should have given him his task early on. Having to ask for it is not making him feel valued.

        • I suppose, but I remember when growing up it was always better to look busy when Dad was hunting up someone to do chores. His chores were always wayyyy worse than the ones you’d pick.

    • Klaus

For some odd reason that metaphor reminds me og Kyle during the first part if the comic.

    • And just like that… BAM… you’re hanging out with the ugly old Emperor and you’ve turned to the dark side. See how this happens? Listen up people!

      • In this case the Beautiful and Terrible Platinum Palpatine.

      • Adam Black

        Hey, you are not ugly.

        • Look at AB being all warm and fuzzy. It’s so adorable… well it won’t happen again in our lifetimes so we better soak it up ! 🙂

          • Adam Black

Well I was going to say ” well there is hope for you yet” but it would affirmed the wrong things.
So I tried to imply it instead.
did it work, or was I too subtle?

          • AB, awwww it worked. It worked. 🙂

  • stickfigurefairytales

Alex, I think there may be a mistake on the character tags for this page, unless Detective Boxer is currently disguised as Commander.

    • Now THAT would be a plot twist 😉

    • davefragments

Either that or Detective Boxer is a disembodied ghost hiding in one of the panels.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I did wonder if maybe they had him on holographic speakerphone, but I couldn’t spot any.

      • silibub

The spirit of futility here to haunt their attempts to save the world. Wow, he’s a dick even after death.

        • davefragments

          Good idea!

    • Doh! Let me fix that…

  • ” … Like going for a KO when The Annihalator is in the air. I can smash him out in the left field. Waaaay out there”

  • stickfigurefairytales

Flyboy can drop mountains on people, JUST LIKE a bird!

    • davefragments

I had a friend once who dive-bombed by a seagull. It wasn’t pretty and it definitely did not smell like roses.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        My sympathies to them.

    • Like an ANGRY bird…

  • Cman65

But I want to play too

  • Xalun K

It’s been a really long time since I’ve commented; I’ve had a lot going on.

    But.

DAMMIT MITCH. Your job is IMPORTANT. I know you want to ‘get in on the action’ and throw things at people, but FFS, you’re the ONLY one who can do what the Commander needs in the air! It’s going to be one of the biggest tactical advantages you guys have, that bird’s eye view. That will tell the team, YOUR team that you need to help keep SAFE, everything they need to know about what’s going on around them in case they need to alter the plan.

You’re the most important person on the team, kiddo.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Glad to see you again, Xalun!

      • Xalun K

Glad to be back! I’ve been reading the comic every single update, I’ve just been having kind of a weird, busy life and haven’t had much to say… until now, lol.

But, I missed you guys so much!

  • davefragments

I hate to go off topic a little but the advertisements on the page are for gay men’s picture books and Tub and Shower Doors for bathrooms.
Kind of a schizophrenic thing from whoever is doing it.

    • Terri Sutton

I don’t know about that. Male me time + shower, bath or toilet seem like a good match to me.

  • Whitewings

I really like where the story is going, but a sincerely hope Alex doesn’t go into the age old trope of “everything goes wrong because the rookie wants to prove himself and screws things up”. I feels like it’s going in that direction, and it’s just so overdone.

    • Terri Sutton

I would love it if Alex do the inversion of that trope.

The YP fail because they (the team leader) refused to utilise the rookie properly. That sounds awesome to me.

      • Adam Black

Yeah, Flyboy accidentally drops the plane on them and saves everybody.

    • Adam Black

I thought that was the theme of the comic, in the first place.

They are all Rookies. They are on this team ( other than spooky ) due to screw ups.

      ( Although I got a feeling Spooky felt like a screw-up Hell/post-hell )

  • Sapfo

AND! He have to do his homework…. wait, that´s me who have to do that.
    Oh well!

This is a great page and I hope the camping was good for you all. Me, I am hitting the schoolbooks.

    • Hit them hard and make them behave!

      • Sapfo

Is that how you do it? o.O
Then I been doing it wrong all these years D:

        • I don’t know, it’s been so long. I think I may have been too cold to my schoolbooks. Leaving them in the cold lonely locker when I was supposed to bring them home.

  • Keneu

Aw… The second pannel is killing me of cuteness. He’s so enthusiastic about it. By the way, is it just me or does he look a bit younger there? And how come his own comrades don’t know very well what his powers are?

    • DC

I could see them practicing their powers together as a team. Maybe they try out untested powers by themselves for safety reasons.

      • Keneu

It could be, I haven’t thought of that. What I’ve just thought is that his powers are still developing, so they think he can only do so much because they haven’t seen him do other things.

    • Klaus

      It is not just you.

      • Keneu

Judging by the comments, apparently not. 😀 But it’s a bit weird for me to feel like that because I’m still quite young myself (older than some TYP members, but still). It makes me think of how I was and how people saw me when I was Mitch’s age.

  • DC

Mmmm, now I’m thinking could he get close enough to Duncan or PP to hurl them through the air or through the portal.

  • Mitch is just all kinds of adorbs in the 2nd panel. How can anyone be so cute wile he eagerly talks about dropping a mountain on someone? *lol*

I now have this hilarous inner image of a boulder flying through the air with Anni sprawled out and clutching the front, as it’s flying fast through the air due to Mitch throwing it at him. Cartoon moment of the day xD

So, besides Amanda, the guys doesn’t seem to know a lot about Mitch’s full power potential yet. That actually makes sense.
He’s pretty new on the team and up until now they’ve only trained and done search and rescue missions.
Most likely there hasn’t been a time where the need to drop boulders and such have come up. The strength, hearing, vision and flying is known, because it’s been usefull at what they’ve done so far, not but throwing a big boulder or smashing someone.

That Mitch knows he can do it, to me that shows he’s tried his strength on his own a time or two.. or ten. Now wonder what else he’s tried doing on his own?
It could build on my theory of Mitch joining the team (or sent there) to get some practice in controlling what he can do – under conditions where he might not harm anyone on his own – as I’m not 100% sure that Mitch is a ‘reject’ yet.

The young ones are clearly being kept an eye on, by government and/or the adult meta-humans. Just turning 15 Mitch would be too young to join an adult team .. but being left on his own with that much power? No he’d need some good guidance and Young Protectors is a great place to start.
Now the others are starting to get a full grasp of who Mitch is and what he can do.

  • Adam Irving

A lot of great profile shots in this panel. It’s not something a lot of people remember or understand when they’re taking pictures – straight on someone’s face isn’t always the best option. Sometimes a slight tilt one way or another can reveal all sorts of wonderful things. Remember your school photographer doing that when you were in school, when you got to choose between laser light and autumnal forest backgrounds?

*GASP* How cool would it be to have a Young Protectors school picture background?? You too could be a part of the team, at least for the length of fifth grade. 😀

    • I’d be in the middle and the cut-out of Spooky would have his arm over my shoulders just like we were best buds… it would be an awesome school picture! Great idea! @alexwoolfson:disqus call the marketing and publicity departments!!!

      • Adam Black

I suppose you’s be the “Guidance Counselor”, right?

        • BINGO! (does that job involve locker rooms?) 🙂

          • Adam Black

I’m sure it will where you get hired.

& shoulder rubs for students before big exams

          • Adam Black ladies and gentlemen… Dean of Students!

    • Adam Black

Why do all yearbook photos suck

You spend all this money for terrible, terrible backgrounds and awful poses.

Its think it ls a photography- industry conspiracy.
Most selfies look better than yearbook pictures.

Three ought to be a class-action suit

    • Klaus

No, I do not remember that. Background was whatever was behind us. A staircase in the school building, or a wall in the school yard.

    • School pics for me always has a beige or light grey velour cloth, where you had the head a bit to the right, and trying not to look like a complete dork. Group shots were a bare school wall.
A forest background would be fun 🙂

  • Adam Black

Cue up 1000 comments how sexy Flyboy looks.

Alex you made him 15 just to torture us, didnt you?

    • Terri Sutton

No he decided to make him look like a younger Superman to torture us.

  • Adam Black

Either there is a mistake in the charcter list,
    or ,
that is really Detective Boxer wearing a Commander skin-suit

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/character/detective-boxer/

  • Derkins

if (when) something goes wrong, you’ll be right there, Mitchy. And don’t worry, *we* think your powers are friggin’ sweet :p

  • Mary Klemzak

Mitch, hon, I know it’s hard to be the youngest and not in active combat like the others. Trust Commander tho. She knows everyone’s strengths and when to use them.

Nice try with the Face of Death(panel 2), and the Face of Squishy Feeks(last)

    • Eh… she seems to be fully utilizing everyone BUT Mitch (regulated to ‘eye in the sky” only) in this plan.

  • Klaus

Why does he mention his inexperience? She need only have said: you have something more important to do.

  • SofiaT

You know, for his age, Mitch is very mature.
He hasn’t thrown any teenage tantrums, he acknowledges that having a bird’s eye view of the situation is important, and he’s willing to do that… poor boy is only asking if he can do more (you can’t tell tone of voice from a speech bubble but I’ll assume he’s asking politely).

    Eager little beaver!

  • bronakopdin

I’m sorry for this probably stupid question but would anyone enlighten me what “Mach two” even is >_<'

Even though he has a point I think Amanda made her point clear, too!
And she's right! They need to controll the situation as good as possible and having an overview of things happening makes it easier to adjust in time… if there is even time to adjust ^^'

but gosh somehow Mitch is so cute! I could hug him in each panel here 🙂
especially the last one with that desperately disappointed look… *hugs*

    • Garnasha

Mach two is two times the speed of sound, so 2*343m/s=686m/s, approx. 2000km/h. Ridiculously fast.

Planes generally avoid doing even Mach one (so exactly the speed of sound) because at those speeds, air becomes a lot less friendly. If you’ve ever belly-flopped on water: air becomes just as hard as that at those speeds. We can make planes that can take that continuous belly-flop, but it takes a lot of doing. Similarly, we can shoot bullets faster than Mach one, but it’s generally not worth it.

      • bronakopdin

so it was a technical term from physics!

(I didn’t choose physics in my last two years of school and I guess I didn’t learn about it until 10th grade ^^’)

        thanks for the explanation 🙂

  • Falconfly

    “Resentment I say! Resentmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeennnnnnnnnnnnnnntttttttttttt!”

  • Nate

“Mister Chekhov? I have the gun you ordered…”

  • Andy Diehl

Note that Mitch says he’s “thought up” lots of stuff he can do. He probably hasn’t been able to practice much of it yet. I gather that he assumes there’s no limitation to what he can lift because of the seeming effortlessness of things he’s lifted so far. This includes, I suspect, the jet in which they are currently riding.

And I’ll second/third/etc what others have said about how well Mitch is drawn on this page. Youth can be very difficult to depict. Adolescents especially can be strangely proportioned. The second and second to last panel are particularly effective at showing what a young pup Mitch still is.

  • john Johnson

Never leave an asset un-utilized. And spy in the sky is useless when you’re too busy fighting to listen , and advise the others what to do. And and an incoming boulder just might provide the distraction they need, if it’s timed right.

    • Xalun K

If they’re going to be too busy fighting to listen if there’s a problem, then they’ve got more problems on their hands than just an un-utilized asset.

    • D. Garrett

it seems to me that mitch could just drop a huge boulder on the gate. and if the communications are telepathic, I don’t see how they could be too busy to listen to it.

  • Pikinanou

You promised us a lot of Mitch in one page and you didn’t lie. I’m happy (and my fingers are itching to pinch some cute cheeks 😀 )

    • Terri Sutton

I’m sad because I feel that it might be the last we see of Mitch for a while. He is after all not involved in the totally going to work (*wink, wink, nudge, nudge*) plan.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I feel so bad for Mitch, I know what it’s like to feel like you’re being left out.

  • Abyssdoor

wait, if you’re talking with people who’s flying the plane?!

    • D. Garrett

maybe its on automatic super power setting? lol. or on hover for a moment?

  • LL

Aww Mitch is so excited about his powers! I hope we seem him in action at some point. 😀

  • mogoskier

Have Mitch pick up the gate and fly it somewhere far away or in the river. I feel like that a safer idea then anything else in the current plan.

  • Um, I’m going to agree with Abyssdoor and wonder with Mitch distracted, who’s keeping the plane in the air? Or have they landed somewhere while the plan was being created?

Guys! Guys! WHO’S FLYING THE PLANE?

    • Heh. He’s actually still touching one of the pylons. Floating in place doesn’t require too much concentration—unless he gets very distracted or riled up. 😉

      • Dang. You gotta love a W.O.G. 🙂

        • Terri Sutton

Took me awhile to figure out you meant “Word of God” as that is a racial/ethnic slur in Australia.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Oh dear. That is very good to know – I’ll definitely avoid abbreviating that in the future.

      • Good to know! I was sweating bullets there.

Then of course I was wondering if they were only staying up in the air because they hadn’t yet noticed, you know how in cartoons you don’t fall until you look down.

      • In that case, I hope he doesn’t get so eager he starts using both his hands xD

  • *facepalm* I ask if there are any campers and then fall asleep. Awesome page! Mitch’s little puppy dog face is adorable~!

  • Shjade

And here we have Flyboy demonstrating the very inexperience Commander’s noted he has: prioritizing strength and destructive power over that of information. Honestly, throwing boulders as van-sized artillery shells is pretty impressive, but not nearly as helpful as being able to see the entire battlefield and everyone on it throughout a skirmish.

“Knowledge is power” just doesn’t appeal until you reach a certain age range, I think. For most people at least. Too indirect to value.

  • december

Oh dear this is so going to end well.

  • D. Garrett

im not thrilled of the idea of a fifteen year old being alone during the battle. even if he is “safe” suppose pp directs a spell toward him somehow? no backup. spooky needs to put spell blockers on all of them before hand.

    • Rupert3434

If there’s one thing I learned from Dungeons and Dragons, it’s that most nasty damaging spells require line of sight…so assuming pp’s magic works the same way he should be fine! 😀
That said, flying in the air is keeping “out of sight”? 😡 I don’t see too many trees around, and I’m pretty sure Mitch doesn’t have any camouflage. Let’s hope he doesn’t get polymorphed, turned to stone, or disintegrated!

      • D. Garrett

its just i dont think a really nasty spell would be required. all she really needs to do is disorient him. or mess up his vision. i have never played d & d. but do the rules of that au apply here? this is a whole different au and line of sight may not apply. *shrugs.

and u make a good point about the lack of trees and camouflage.

      • Samurai Jack

Well… We know the PP can open portals. The best defense for a large rock falling at you would be to open a large portal to another location. Say, the airspace above New York, Washington or Beijing. Transfer the damage, because even if Mitch is disoriented or disturbed the projectile is still close enough to make your life miserable. If you survive. But really, the only warning she should have would be the sonic boom as Mitch breaks the sound barrier. At that speed, at close range, there should be very little chance to launch a countermeasure. (Leaving aside not so little questions of any preplanned defenses, whether or not the projectile remains intact when breaking the sound barrier, or even whether Mitch should go that fast. It’s not necessary to do lots of damage, and staying below the speed of sound adds stealth to the attack)

  • Samurai Jack

I’m feeling pretty chuffed at predicting the high speed boulder from altitude thing a few weeks ago. Frankly, I think Amanda is making a tactical error in not making it their primary attack. If it hits the gate and stage the ritual would be disrupted, with no risk to the rest of the team. And really, no risk to Mitch either given his speed. Should the Platinum Priestess find a way to stop it in time (she’d have seconds to perhaps cast a spell) then you can send in ground forces. But it’s entirely possible that the chaos and disruption from dropping a house sized rock on them will be enough to get the job done. Or delay them enough for the military to arrive.

  • fujoshifanatic

Aww, Mitch’s baby face and earnestness are too adorable! I love how Amanda manages here team with decisiveness and respect (Gordon, take note!). She knows exactly how to use their talents for the mission at hand, and can communicate her plans without dismissing their input in a demeaning way. Her mama raised her well. Can’t wait to see this plan put into action!

  • Tahir Raines

I agree with The Commander. Not only is he the youngest (which warrants more protection), he serves the team better by giving The Commander a bird’s eye view of the area. It takes him out of the fight, but places him in a position more useful than if he joined in. Plus, The Commander could always order him to attack if needed.

  • Sterling Ericsson

Besides, he can still totally do the boulder thing if the rest are in trouble and need help. Furthermore, him being out of sight means that when this plan inevitable fails and they get caught, he’ll be free to do something to help them.

  • Kate G

Awwwwwww, come on, give wee baby Mitchy a chance!!!! The only way to gain experience is to GET EXPERIENCE (why don’t employers understand this concept?)

And did I just say “wee baby Mitchy?” OMG, I am losing it.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Argh! Itchy donation bar! Must scratch!
    Ahh! Soothing salve of dings…

  • I love how every single one of us is just like “Yes yes, let’s see their inevitable defeat already.”
    We are smart fans.
    😀

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

They’re all defeated, lying at Laampros feet bound hand and foot, and while Big Red is monologuing about his plans a huge car-sized boulder drops from several miles up mashing him as flat as a bug in mid-sentence. Mitch drops from the sky and says, “Did I get him?”

      • stickfigurefairytales

        YES!

  • Mitch (mentally to Amanda): Oooops. Damn!

Amanda (mentally back): What ooops? What damn?

    (Silence)

Amanda: Miiiiiitch? … What just happened?

Mitch: Well I was only off a tiny bit.

    Amanda: MITCH! Just spill it.

Mitch: Well there was wind… see…

    Amanda: MITCH!

Mitch: Well the boulder kinda swerved a tiny bit and squashed those people in the glass box and not the magic sphincter and Sircea… (silence)… I could try again? I totally got the wind velocity figured out now and…

Amanda: (rubbing her forehead, as if it hurts) Mitch, YOU are going to go back to the jet NOW and wait for us there. We’re in battle and I can’t talk about this right now. (more forehead rubbing)

Mitch: It was a total accident. I…

Amanda: MITCH. I know. Plane… NOW.

Mitch: K. (flies off slouchily, as only a fifteen-year-old can fly)

    • davefragments

      “magic sphincter”
now that is an interesting and provocative name for it.

      • Samurai Jack

        Accurate too.

      • I know, it makes me smile like an eight-year-old with a new fart joke. Yep, maturity, that’s me! Heh.

    • Steven K.

Well, if it’s a big enough chunk of a mountain, the wind velocity might not factor into it as much – and maybe they are in a region with just light subtropical breezes – hardly enough to overcome the acceleration due to gravity. But yeah – there should be a bit of a physics calculation involved – if he’s floating and drops it, that’s one thing, but if he’s speeding along and drops it, that’s much more difficult – he’s have to let go a certain distance before the target.

      • davefragments

For anything to “float” or even fall through the atmosphere a great distance it must be moving. Movement is kinetic energy and height is potential energy. This is a tiny Physics lesson.

So a boulder in the air is acted upon by two forces (or a single complex force that can be described by two simpler forces). One force acts parallel to the ground and moves the boulder over the surface from point “a” to point “b”. The resistance to this first force is the friction of moving through the air. A second force that moves up counteracts gravity pulling the boulder down. That force diminishes over time and gravity wins.

An airplane constantly provides lift to counteract gravity and pushes itself through the air to move from one airport to another. Nothing above the ground is ever merely “floating.” What we perceive as “floating” is the interaction of lift and gravity and lateral movement.

Now think about a space shuttle coming in for a landing. It has a heat shield and air friction heats the shield to red hot. The space shuttle was glider with enough lift to control a landing on wheels and the ability to reduce speed from thousands of miles per hour to zero as it landed. Orbiting the earth requires not only lift but a second force to make it travel at least 25,000 miles in 90 minutes. (circumference of the earth=25K miles)

      • I hope for all the Mitch lovers out there (I’m looking at you Doki) that I’m being very very silly. No need to get out your slide rulers folk. 🙂

  • Ahh.. came to check comments, and got to see a new *Ding, ding, ding*

    • Klaus

Just one more and we will all get a Christmass gift.

  • Amanda is great and cool and all that, but I am reserving judgement until I see how she answers Mitch’s question. Something is really starting to not sit right with me.

  • Terri Sutton

    Are we camping today?

    • Yep. ^_^ How are you today Terri?

      • Terri Sutton

        Hot.

        • Ice?

          • Terri Sutton

Whenever the weather gets warm I start to feel ill and tired. Covering myself in ice just makes my joints ache.

          • I am not good in hot weather as well.

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Oh, almost certainly.

    • *peeks in* I’m about.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I’m here now too!

  • davefragments

I will be camping in about an hour or so. I have chores (pout, pout).

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Good luck with your chores!

  • *Peeks in fast* .. Hi guys.
If the page is early tonight, I’ll miss its first launch, because I NEED another hour of sleep right now. I’ll be back in around an hour – for camping or for the page.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Sleep well, Danish!

    • Sleep good!

    • Not long now… 🙂

      • Kuca

Hurry! Please. Need to go to sleep early today, so exhausted…

      • Darn.. I left a few minutes too fast and didn’t see this xD

        • Sleep is good too, Danish. You can’t possibly handle all your Virgins if you don’t get a nap now and then. 🙂

    • Saxon_Brenton

I wonder if Spooky has some sleep-in-a-bottle…?

    • silibub

Hey hey. I can only stick around until the page goes up, too — I’m pretty tired as well.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Hope you get a good night’s sleep, silibub!

        • silibub

          Thanks 🙂

  • davefragments

    I’m back

    • wb ^_^

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Just in time.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Glad you made it!

    • Hi!

      • davefragments

Yo Ho Ho, time to raise the anchor

        • Indeed! Unfurl the sails.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!

          • Are we all really bad eggs then?

          • stickfigurefairytales

We are mostly misunderstood eggs with some issues to work on.

          • Yes, yes I believe that works. 😀

  • davefragments

And in tonight’s funky ads update.
The ads think I want to move to Hawaii because I keep reading “Big Idland Video News”. . . I have a friend who lives in Pahoa
The ads also think I need a ticket to the Pittsburgh Public Theater. I already have season tickets.
And it thinks I want to buy more books. Like the house isn’t overfilled with them.

  • davefragments

    Anyone snowed in?

    • stickfigurefairytales

It’s very cold here right now and we have a fair amount of snow, but I’m not genuinely snowed in – the roads are clear at the moment. You?

      • davefragments

Teeny patches of white between leaves and gras.
Cold though. Damn it’s cold. I walk outside and turn around 10 feet later. It’s too cold.
