The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 72

221 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 72

Panel 5 is one of my favorite Spooky panels of all time.

I’m now back from NijiCon and I had a really awesome time! Check out my Conventions page to see what I have upcoming, but next on the list is BENT-CON 2014 in Los Angeles, November 7th-9th. It’s a lot of fun for geeky folks of all stripes. I hope to see a bunch of y’all there! 😀

If you’re curious exactly how dorky I am when giving a panel, well, then you’re in luck! They’ve just posted the video of me and SMBC’s Zach Wienersmith giving a panel on How To Succeed With Kickstarter at GX2. If you have a moment and you’re curious, please check it out.

Oh, and…

Our sixty-seventh bonus page in a row! And just hours ago, you tipped the donation bar below past its target YET AGAIN! 😀 That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, October 22nd (page 72!), Wednesday, October 29th (page 74!) Wednesday, November 5th (page 76!), Wednesday, November 12th (page 78!), Wednesday, November 19th (page 80!), and Wednesday, November 26th (page 82!), there will now be an additional bonus page (page 84!) on Wednesday, December 3rd! You are all AMAZING! Thank you so, so much!

Special thanks, a warm welcome and grateful bow go out to new supporters JUSTIN W., & Zaneta M. for their generous donations over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to long-time friends of The Young Protectors Lisa G. for their super-generous $25 donation and also to Saxon B. for their super-generous $40 donation! And this makes Lisa’s thirty-eighth and Saxon’s 120th (!!!) super-generous donations to this comic!

And finally, ZOMG!, giant-robot-sized hugs and very grateful bows go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $100 donation, their 113th stunningly generous donation to this comic! Thank you so, so much, Christopher!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Looks like the plan is for Spooky to sweep The Annihilator off his feet! (Watch out, Kyle — that Spooky is a smooth one.) Well, that’s one baddie down. (Or up… or something… Anyway!) But how do they hope to “neutralize” The Platinum Priestess?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

If you particularly enjoy any of these pages and use Facebook, please click the Like button on that page. It’s useful to know what’s working and it helps me get the word out!
  • Oh dayum. hope this works.

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

    • That was literally less than 2sec apart. I had to refresh a couple of times to be sure who made it 😉

  • davefragments

    and more of the plan

  • Ooooh!

  • silibub

  • silibub

I’m really curious to hear what Amanda plans to do about Sircea (not least because she’ll probably be on the page as Amanda visualizes it, haha!)

    • Yours came up just as I was hitting the button to comment. 😛

    • Samurai Jack

Mind fight! If Amanda’s screaming in her head, I wonder if she can cast spells?

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Yeah, that’s the big question: “What about the Platinum Priestess?” What’s she gonna do?

    • David Welbourn

From what I’ve seen of the Platinum Priestess so far, I think the first thing the heroes need to do is disarm her of her staff. Even in the flashback sequences, she’s always had some version of that thing. I doubt removing (or destroying it) would neutralize her, but I think any strategy has to involve separating her from it.

      • D. Garrett

reminds me of gandalf in lord of the rings.

  • I suppose this is where Fluke comes in? Or is the Commander planning to face the Priestess herself?

    • silibub

I hope Amanda doesn’t do it alone, although it would be an interesting match-up. Whatever Fluke’s supposed to do, dealing with Sircea is probably the best place to utilize him.

      • That’s what I was thinking. Fluke’s powers could just be the banana peel they need.

I do hope that they have a Plan B in there somewhere.

        • silibub

Amanda’s mind works fast, but I don’t know if there’s enough time for her to come up with a viable second approach. I’m sure she’ll think on her feet.

And there’s still Mitch’s powers to think about — I wonder if he’ll be needed to combat Sircea, or if Amanda’s going to have him work on destroying more of the scaffolding and such.

          • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Or try to fly away with the hostages.

          • Klaus

            They are not actually hostages.

          • Jakk Anthony Guzman

What do you think they are?

          • Klaus

Sacrifices. The villains are not threatening to do someting nasty to these people unless some demands are met. They are going to do it unless they are stopped.

          • That’s what I guess worries me. If plan A always fails, they need to have a way to rally. But usually everyone goes to their corners after the first initial clash and then usually the good guys find a way, even if its a big fumbling mess.

It would be interesting to see him work in conjunction with Spooky. Have Mitch toss Duncan into the air, have Spookys catch him with the magic, maybe a few more aerials.

          • Steven Klimecky

Or the reverse – after Spooky has picked him up and wrapped him up in ectoplasmic bonds (that have also plucked away his weapons), he can hand him off to Mitch to spirit him away a couple hundred miles – maybe then let go and plop him in the water so his hair gets all messy.

        • D. Garrett

because sircea is a magic user, the opportunity for hilarity seems high to me. i could just see her attempting to cast one spell, but unluckily accidentally using a useless one! (¬‿¬) the look on her face when the spell she expects turns into a toad would have me giggling a long time. or she suddenly unluckily cant seem to remember all the words to the spell she needs / wants to cast. should be really funny! shes gonna look like this: ミ●﹏☉ミ ha ha!

  • DC

    Nice back view of Tsunami.

    • D. Garrett

true. i kinda wish his back tattoos were more similar to the front. but its still nice!

    • Stubbylegs

      DAT ASS

  • Terri Sutton

The more they get into the plan the more certain I become that this plan will fail so hard.

    • silibub

Something has to go wrong, but I’m interested to see what.

      • Jakk Anthony Guzman

        • silibub

See, on the one hand I love her unpredictability, but on the other hand she’s way more likely to shoot to kill than Duncan, so that makes me very nervous!

      • David Welbourn

I can think of at least one way everything can go wrong for our heroes, and it’s something we’ve already seen previously in The Young Protectors saga.

        • Samurai Jack

Yeah, the power dampening device used against the Annihilator when he and Kyle went on a date. It was destroyed, but it might not have been the only one. Also, it wouldn’t work against magic. If it did, we wouldn’t have had invisible Kyle.

          • David Welbourn

I think we were told there was a second one, and yes, the dampener seems to not work against magic. So Spooky and Sircea would still be powered, but Duncan would have his weapons, and the minions alone could overpower our heroes.

          • Librarican

In that regard, is Fluke’s skill considered magic or a power?

    • Kuca

Just what I’m thinking, really. Way, way too much planning. Way too many things to go wrong. Almost seems like it’s gonna backfire off the get-go and they’ll have to wing it, such as that is.

      • Terri Sutton

There is a reason why detailed plans fail in comics. Using the same panels for the planning in the fight while time saving is not something the readers would respond well too.

        • stickfigurefairytales

“And then everything went exactly the way it did before, when we were talking about how we were going to to it.”

          …yeah, not too compelling.

      • joshsusser

Maybe that’s the point. Maybe the discussion of the plan is a decoy to be overheard by PP’s magical scrying, while the real briefing is happening telepathically. Or maybe I’ve read too many Amber novels and don’t take anything at face value 🙂

        • D. Garrett

omg! a fellow amberite!? we gotta chat! my favorite book series and author of all time!!! \(^▽^@)ノ
ur right! could be a dissemblance.

          • Samurai Jack

I suspect there are many of us in these parts. Haven’t read them in decades, but I haven’t forgotten them.

          • joshsusser

Yes, it’s pretty much the best story I know. I’ve read that series more times than I can count, and spent several years playing in an Amber RPG. This means I am suspicious about everything the author tells me to believe. BTW, if you love Amber, read Steven Brust’s Dragaeran series – you’ll love it for many of the same reasons.

          • D. Garrett

ive read chronicles of amber twice, and listened to books 1-4 on audiobook on youtube. i tried recently reading book five but my mind couldnt focus. ٩◔̯◔۶ normally i read smut. lately slash smut, so its a challenge for me to go back to nearly smutless reading material. thank u for the rec tho. i am so behind on my fan fics its hard to read anything else. my fav character is corwin. ♥‿♥ who is yours?

          • Samurai Jack

I know you didn’t ask me, but Random. Also, does it seem to anyone else like Amber is where Neil Gaiman got his inspiration for the Endless?

          • D. Garrett

random is really cool. i like him alot. what was ur favorite random moment? i think i like best when he took corwin to rebma to help him regain his memories. that was as loving an act as u get with these siblings. i read a little bit about the endless. i definitely read some similarities with the amber series. especially the communication between siblings.

        • Keneu

          wow, that would be cool!

  • Tahir Raines

Yeah, their plan is definitely going to fail or at the very least go majorly awry. There’s no way Alex would be going into this much detail about the plan if it would be a success.

    • Steven Klimecky

I’ve had similar thoughts – no need to illustrate it now if that’s what is actually going to happen later – would be silly to do it twice, and a little weird if it’s just a line of narration that says: “Umm …all that stuff we just showed y’all the YPs doing – it just happened.”

  • I can only agree with you, Alex. That panel 5 with Spooky is absolutely glorious <3
One of my favorite panels of him in all the comic. I could just.. just.. *happy sigh* And those ectoplasmic grabby hands!

  • silibub

Whoa, it’s late. Glad you had a good time at NijiCon, Alex! Thanks for the beautiful page (panels four and five are fantastic — Adam and Vero did such an awesome job), and of course I’m really looking forward to the next one. ‘Night everybody!

  • So Kyle and Gordon to ruin the stargate and handle the minions, Spooky to handle Anni.. Mitch for the hostages perhaps? (Also a good way to maybe get him out of the way).. and that leaves Amanda and Paul with PP.
Not to disregard Anni but PP is the one who worries me the most. Of those two, she’s the one who certainly won’t have a moment of possible hessitation.

    • Klaus

      And she is prepared.

  • Klaus

Are Tsunami’s tatoos just a light blue color, or are they shining?

    • They have a glow when he is using his powers.

      • joshsusser

Just wondering, do the tattoos have to be exposed to work? Or do they perhaps burn off a shirt when they glow? Is this why Tsunami goes shirtless? Or it is just to look super imposing? 🙂

        • While I’m going to hold off on specific details until they are revealed in story, I can assure you that Tsunami would not go around shirtless unless there was a practical reason. 🙂

          • joshsusser

            That was my assumption 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

So, theoretically, you could neutralize his powers by throwing a sheet over him?

          • It’s certainly worth a try. 🙂

            (I’d bring a swimsuit.)

          • stickfigurefairytales

Oh man, Tsunami would be so much fun to have around in the summertime and for water balloon fights and stuff (he wouldn’t even need the balloons).

  • joshsusser

No offense to the esteemed Commander, but has she never encountered a major magical working before? In preparing for the ritual, the first thing I’d expect PP to do would be to establish magical wards for the ritual space, to protect the activity from interference. All Commander’s plans hinge on being able to waltz in and take them by surprise. But I seriously doubt our villains would be so naive as to leave the working undefended.

    • David Welbourn

I also suspect magical wards. Also, considering how long PP and Anni have planned this, there could be some nasty non-magical wards too, buried in the ground around their chosen site.

    • D. Garrett

very true. in all the books ive read with magic users, they universally use wards. but if spooky survived hell, and escaped it, he should handle them np i think. but it hasnt been addressed in the plans and he has failed to mention anything about that likeliness. makes me wonder a bit…

  • Toli Bera

hmm, you know what spooky? he might have weapons hidden inside his armor. you’d might as well just remove that too if you’re gonna pick off his throwables. it’s just practical thinking.

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Hmmm, might be a good idea then to remove all of his clothes too just to make sure there are no hidden weapons. 😉

      • David Welbourn

Honestly, Duncan might oblige you by ripping parts of his armour off himself and throwing the pieces.

      • Saxon_Brenton

I dunno. Captain Jack Harkness was stripped naked in the Dr Who ep. ‘Bad Wolf’ but still armed and dangerous because he had a blaster pistol hidden up his butt. Do you think the Annihilator practices that level of Crazy Prepared?

  • TwilightDreamer

lol, gotta love Spooky’s sense of humour even when planning a battle 😛
Good point Paul….PP doesn’t need to be in close range to attack….
…O.O….crazy thought but….commander’s not going to put Flyboy against her….is she??

  • I was really hoping to see Mitch on this page, but I guess panels 4 and 5 make up for it. ^_^ The artwork in those panels are really awesome. ^_^

    • Klaus

Dokidokibaka! You are back. I hope you have recovered fully.

      • Well I am better, but not so sure about how long my computer is going to take. -_- Thanks to JesBelle I have a laptop to use in the meantime. ^_^

        • Librarican

I thought about doing that same thing with my old laptop (I just got a new one) but I had no idea how to contact you or where to send it since you didn’t have computer access. Glad you got one!

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Hey, I thought everything was shielded against magic! Otherwise Spooky could just summon a couple of demons to eat Duncan and Sircea.

    • Klaus

A demon that could be casually summuned would be no match for Sircea.

  • D. Garrett

so im curious. who is ur favorite typ character? i think mine is kyle. i got hooked on him because of his story regarding the restrictions of sexual release / activity. i dont mind his unusual parentage. his look in orgasm…priceless! curses on anni for the hurt he inflicted on my baby!

    • Do you really need to ask me? I think everyone is well aware of who I favor. ^_^ I would actually be surprised if there is anyone who still doesn’t know. ^_^

      • D. Garrett

        doki my memory sucks! *frustrated!!!
        (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ (throws table!) ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ) (puts it back!)
        retell plz?!

        • Yes it is Mitch. ^_^

*mumbles about Alex being a tease*

    • Saxon_Brenton

Probably Spooky. I have a fondness for mages in general, both for reading about and for playing in RPGs. But on top of that, Spooky’s personality is just plain fun.

    • David Welbourn

I’m tempted to claim that Laampros is my current favourite, even though I don’t really “do” favourites as a general rule. Besides being a big hot daddy, Laampros is also a figure of mystery to me. When he said “You understand nothing!” to Duncan, I became very curious about what Laampros knows that Duncan does not.

      • D. Garrett

        i agree he is mysterious.

      • Laampros is my #3-4.

    • Phyre Storm

Basically all of them except Tsunami. 😛

I guess I’ll go with Spooky. He’s funny, cute, a great friend, and tough enough to survive in Hell for a year at 13.

    • Mir

Spooky Jones all the way. I mean just the name should make you like the character immediately. Fluke and Spooks are both amazing friends to Kyle.

    • I don’t think there’s many ‘regulars’ here who’s not aware that my answer is the Spookster <3 That was clear even before he became a larger reader favorite 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

Spooky and Fluke are probably my favorites, but I love the whole team. Although I am mad at Tsunami right now.

    • Steven Klimecky

Def. Kyle and Mitch here. Totally fallen for Kyle originally, but when just-as-adorable Mitch voiced how concerned he was for Kyle and how much he wanted him to know that he was there for him after the incident – well, couldn’t help falling for him too. I can relate to the not-necessarily-by-choice sexual repression on Kyle’s part as well (more of an unfortunate necessity in his case, with likely an emotional inhibition as well, arising out of fear of causing further catastrophe).

  • Saxon_Brenton

Just on observation about Fluke’s comments in the last panel. His playing of the Devil’s Advocate to point out the obvious points that the plan hasn’t covered yet is rather similar to the questions he was asking to keep Spooky and Red Hot grounded back at the warehouse in chap.3 page.20. It suggests he has a analytic mind: he may not have all the answers in the way that we’re expecting the Commander to, but he’s intent on asking the right questions. I like that. There was a time really early in the story when I was worried that someone with his type of powers would have a more lackadaisical outlook and rely on his luck to carry things through.
So, Fluke: I was wrong, and I apologise.

  • purplefoxglove

“The PP? Don’t worry about her – we’ll use our Very Secret Weapon. Mitch, have you been practicing those puppy eyes as instructed?”

    • Those would definitely work on me. ^_^

      • purplefoxglove

Who wouldn’t they work on? 😉

It’s great to have you back, Doki!

        • It is good to be back! ^_^

        • Klaus

They would not work on the Platinum Priestess.

          • purplefoxglove

            😛 spoilsport 😉

      • bronakopdin

gosh you’re back! good to see you 😀 I hope you’re fine again? ^^

        • Well fine is a relatively flexible term, but I am better yes. ^_^ Now to just have my computer fixed.

    • Terri Sutton

Would the puppy dogs be used to appeal to her non-existent parental feelings or would they be used to highlight how jail-baity Flyboy is?

      • purplefoxglove

I’ll leave that up to you 😉

  • bronakopdin

so they just wanna try to make Anni “useless” because he can’t take action while floating! Ok…
it sounds as easy as logic xD
though yeah what will they do with PP? more planning I’m looking forward to 😀

and those panels 4 and 5 are as awesome to watch as last page’s panel 3 🙂
now we have Tsunami’s back… are we on a booty mission here? xD

  • Darrien

I feel like someone’s likely to die soon. Likelihood (Greatest to least): Tsunami, Commander, Flyboy or Fluke.

    • Pikinanou

I upvote you because I think you might be right, but not because I want it to happen! T__T

    • stickfigurefairytales

    • Derkins

If it were any of the last 3 on that list, I would fliiiip ooooouttt

  • Librarican

Can Commander manipulate the brain, or can she just read and project people’s thoughts? Can she anticipate their next move telepathically? That is going to make a big difference when considering her effectiveness in battle.

    • Klaus

She can hurt people with her power. She says so in the bonus comic.

      • Librarican

I’m going to have to retread the bonus comic, because I have a hard time remembering the specifics of her power. I keep thinking of other “brain based powers” I have seen and trying to compare them to hers. For instance, I don’t think she is as powerful as Dr. Xavier, but I think she has more up her sleeve then just seeing what their brain is processing. Could she force PP to do something, or when fighting can she tell what move PP is going to make a split second before she makes it? Can she hypnotize her into stopping the spell, or confuse her mentally to the point that she can’t remember or enact the spell physically?

  • Kit the Coyote

They are spending a great deal of time here ‘detailing’ the plan for us so we can all appreciate how spectacularly it falls apart when reality hits. *grins*

  • I think something is going to happen between Kyle and Anni that is going to throw the entire plan into chaos. Maybe Anni gets hurt and Kyle jumps to defend him or vise versa and then the entire thing falls apart. Lampros shows up and then they’re all forced to join forces to defeat him. Or I could be totally wrong. Just a thought or two. 🙂

    • D. Garrett

interesting thought about kyle & anni.

    • Steven Klimecky

I don’t think Anni has done anything so far that would make Kyle want to defend him or help him – just the opposite I think. Even all the nice things Duncan did or said were either subterfuges or lies or deceits to gain Kyle’s confidence and trust. And any otherwise good memory that Kyle could have had has been turned to shame and humiliation and pain and regret and self-reproach, etc. NOTHING to feel good about regarding Duncan after all that which would cause Kyle to suddenly feel all warm and fuzzy and protective toward his abuser.

      • Derkins

That is all very true. I do also think Duncan saving Kyle from the PP, in the reverse of that, could have some potential likelihood.

      • Frater Gymnos

No, but their past history might cause Anni to… take a long look, pause in attacking Kyle… the heart can really trip you up in the clinch – and I think it’s going to be Anni’s feelings about Kyle that will doom his cause.

  • WarGoddess

Yes, they all spring into action and then the Platinum Priestess just immobilizes everyone with a spell. Magic is fun. 😀

  • Cydney Sabin

Because plans always work. This is gonna be good…

  • YangYueLan

Im a little confused…are they just planing or are they planing and we are getting the bits of the future that show them doing the plan?

    • davefragments

We are seeing what they THINK will happen.

      • YangYueLan

Ah, thank you! That make the most sense.

  • Pikinanou

I find interesting the way the plan is explained to us, it reminds me of a tv series I’ve seen where the protagonists explain something to someone, but while looking at the camera (as if talking to us, the watchers) and said action is happening beside/behind them, most often something that had already happened in the past or that could possibly happen if they went with a certain plan, etc. I think it makes for entertaining exposition. 🙂

  • Keys2tkingdom

I’m calling it now, this plan will NOT work since “when the characters come up with a plan to save the day, its chances of success are inversely proportional to how much the audience knows about it beforehand”. On TVT, this is known as the Unspoken Plan Guarantee. And even if team stops now, the team has talked about the plan too much for this idea to work.

    • davefragments

Remember that rather infamous line in the last Harry Potter “Hermione! When have any of our plans ever actually worked? We plan, we get there, all hell breaks loose!”

      I think that applies here.
And we know whose Hell it is.
Plus we get to see George again.

      • Phyre Storm

Yep, I agree with both of you. Who’s George, though?

        • davefragments

          As I remember George. . .
I think that’s what the gang named the giant eyeball in Laampros’ hell dimension.
Chapter 2 pages 20 or 22 or so.

        • As Dave said, George is what the readers named the giant eyeball. George Finnegan Edwards (using the initials of Giant Floating Eyeball). Clave is the key-thingy Laampros got to keep, and the magic screen Spooky has was quickly names an iScry.
Guess the ‘Stargate’ falls under a quick naming too for obvious reasons (nothing is safe of a reader naming in this comic *lol*).

          • Derkins

Oh this made me crack up

          • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

By coincidence, on the “Stuff Fundies Like” website, “George” is a sort of devil or gremlin on whom posters blame their typos and errors. And then there is “Old Georgie” from the Hawaiian parts of “Cloud Atlas”…

  • Phyre Storm

Does anyone else think they should attack Sircea first and THEN go after Duncan and the stargate thingy? They’re going to need every advantage they can get when fighting her, and giving up the element of surprise doesn’t seem very bright.

    • Derkins

      I agree.

  • silibub

I wonder how they’ll handle the small horde of stabby minions. If Spooky’s concentrating on disarming and restraining Duncan, he’ll be vulnerable to them even if Sircea’s engaged elsewhere. Maybe Kyle and Tsunami will stay nearby to ward them off with their respective elements — Kyle might be able to maintain a circle of fire around Spooky or something (although the associations I already have with Kyle plus fire circles don’t exactly bode well.)

    • stickfigurefairytales

If the Commander can control people’s minds as well as read their thoughts, maybe she’ll take out the minions?

  • Shinashi

    Rumor has it *snort* Smartass

  • AliceVenturi

So. Plans, huh? That’s adorable! I wonder if they remember that no plan ever survives first contact with the enemy? Well, heroes gotta be heroes, and plans are often a key part of a hero’s toolkit. Even though, as mentioned below, talking about The Plan guarantees it won’t work. I foresee some interesting times ahead! Pass the popcorn.

    • Derkins

Hope they throw in a plan B and C, too >.>

    • Frater Gymnos

Yep. I can’t wait to see how the plan goes awry… and then FLUKE saves the day!!!!

  • DC

Yesterday I think I was in awe of all the action, details and wonderful bright colours. So I missed seeing Spooky’s ectoplasmic powers forming hands that appear to be collecting the bones from the portal ring.

    • stickfigurefairytales

If you mean the ones in panel 5, I think they’re collecting Anni’s throwing stars (and knives, down around Spooky’s word balloon).

Yes, I need glasses. I missed the knives too!

        • Glasses are no guarantee of being able to see. I should know. One of my favorite sayings is “Just because I wear glasses doesn’t mean I can see.”

          • bronakopdin

Doki I have a favour to ask! Somehow I can’t enter the website anymore it always says the site is down or has some timeout problem… now I wonder why that is because I saw you upvoted me recently on some posts but I still can’t access the site but you could?!?! I don’t know what to do T^T
            do you have any idea?

          • It is working for me, are you still having problems accessing the site? (asking because roughly ten hours have passed since you asked this.

          • bronakopdin

I had troubles accessing since yesterday though I didn’t try since Saturday before and when I asked this I still had troubles but a few hours ago I could access without any problem, thank god 😀
I still made some screenshots from the error messages I received, in case this happens again I could provide the error codes if needed though I have no idea who actually looks into those? I doubt it would be mice-sensei herself…

          • Actually I am 80-98% certain that she does do everything on the site herself.

          • bronakopdin

Oh really? That’s awesome in itself! Then in case it helps how should I send her the screenshots? They might be useful after all!

          • She was actually having problems with it herself. She had to switch back to something (DNS?) while she investigates and figures out what is wrong.

          • bronakopdin

oh noes! Though I actually have no idea about programming or computer language >_>’
but I sent her my screenshots via mail, hope I could help a little 🙂

        • Klaus

“The first thing to go blind is your eyes” is a common saying in these parts.

    • davefragments

I think those are Duncan’s throwing darts. They are roundish and that’s what the Commander and Spooky were talking about the panel or two before.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    “As for you, Mitch…”

    “You go keep lookout.”

    • Pikinanou

*Mitch kicks imaginary rock* “Aw, not again…”

  • Adam Black

I think I called it last week,
She trips on her dress, falls off the platform, and has some seriously bad luck! What a Klutz. Youd think she practiced for this performance better…

    • davefragments

I think she trips on her dress and has a double wowie wardrobe malfunction that leaves “them” drooling.

      Well, that’s really only silliness.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I…don’t think PP’s dress works like that.

        • davefragments

          I think you are correct.
I’m hoping we hear about the “distract the PP” part of the plan tonight.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Me too!

    • silibub

And then, way off in the distance, we’ll hear Edna Mode scream, “NO CAPES!”

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I have a bad feeling about this.

    • I just got a feeling too. I think I know how part of this is going go.

  • Anna Calloway

I don’t think that portal will be destroyed so easily. I mean it’s gonna have to withstand an entire army from hell coming through it. Surely its tougher than that.

  • Mary Klemzak

Oooohhhh more inside stuff how they plan to kick bad guy’s tushes! It’s kinda like a “How it’s Made” or “Modern Marvels” episode. I love that stuff!

*grabs seat, yells at everyone to shut up(which is, at this point, only a snoring 8 year old golden retriever) so I can watch my show in peace!*

I’m in love with panels 4 and 5. So much amazeballs.

And THEN there’s Mr Negative. Or realistic? Anyway, the guys getting on my nerves. People like that always do. Mood killer.

  • Mary Klemzak

FYI: I think the throwing stars are called shurikens? Nasty buggers.

    • Kate G

Yes….and no. “Shuriken” literally mean “hand hidden blade.” It refers to a division of weapons used by ninjas that were sharp and could be concealed with your hands. Throwing stars are shuriken in the shape of stars; they were supplemental tools to the more famous katana and yari for the ninja. Kunai (gardening trowels) were another tool often used by the ninja when the yari and katana failed.

This site gives a good insight to the difference of shuriken, throwing stars and kunai. I learned a little bit about them when I did karate.

  • icelizarrd

The more detail characters put into a plan onscreen, the less likely it is to succeed, alas.

  • Becky

Good plan, Amanda. I bet it’s totally going to go smoothly and everything.

    • timemonkey

It might. But it’ll leave them with two pissed off supervillains and considering the reasons they’re even doing this stopping them could eb bad overall.

  • Alan Michael Williams

I forgot, have we seen Platinum Priestess’ powers in action?

    • Klaus

Dressing Kyle (bibbity bobbity boo). Teleporting Kyle and Duncan to Hong Kong. Analyzing Kyle’s powers.

  • Kate G

How long have I been away? Enough that I don’t recall the last time I posted and I miss being here. HOWEVER, I have been reading. Let’s just say Lupus has been my Platinum Priestess at the moment. SO TIRED.

I have to agree with you, Alex; panel 5 is my favorite. Of course, Spooky acting and bringing the whole fight to life is cool (unless, of course, that is for our enjoyment and then I have my literal Autism to blame. I can never tell unless someone literally tells me sometimes. SIGH.)

    • stickfigurefairytales

Welcome back, name twin! It’s good to see you again!

    • Welcome back!

  • I’m going to get the good out of the way first because this is an “inhale” rant moment. Art and presentation are as usual fantastic. A strong “thank you” for the efforts of Alex, Adam, and Veronica. I most enjoy the clashing colors of Spooky’s ectoplasmic restraints against the natural browns, blues, and grays of the backdrop. Also, shades of SLIMER in the colors. Thank you for taking me back to my youth. Now, the figurative “inhale.”

Amanda, what are you thinking? No, wait, ARE you thinking? I’ve sat back patiently and watched as you revealed your plan and I am at the point of doing a triple face-palm.

Because even a double face-palm can’t cover how much this fails.

You’re sending Spooky head-on against the Duncanator. REALLY?

Why are you engaging them at all? In what universe is engaging the villains — on their home turf mind you — a good idea? Is Platinum Palpatine controlling your mind? I’m only an armchair strategist and I’m flailing my arms like Kermit the Frog in a light socket! Mayday! June-day! Danger! Danger!

    /end rant.

Thank you for indulging the moment where I close the cover of a book and scream into a pillow at the disaster I see coming. It is rare when I feel so invested in a story. Back to the book! Thank you again, Mr. Woolfson!

    • Samurai Jack

I believe she’s thinking she just has to be a nuisance, and delay them long enough for the military to arrive. Casualties? Yeah, probably.

      • Amanda’s states her goal is to stop the ritual. She knows Duncan and Sircea are two of the most powerful and dangerous supervillains in the world. She knows the capabilities of her team. If she thinks Spooky can go toe-to-toe against Duncan then I’m sure he can. My exasperation is that she doesn’t need to take that risk to accomplish her goal. As it appears she is gambling on a lot of unknowns.

She has no idea how well defended that torus/gate is. She has no idea how well the scaffolding will hold up against Kyle’s fire or Gordon’s water. She has no idea how Duncan has prepared for battle. She knows that there is a small army of black-robed cultists ready to swarm. She assumes the sacrifices will be okay. Strategists play to their strengths and from what I see, Amanda is playing right into the hands of the bad guys by making obvious moves. I can only assume that she is engaging in some kind of feint maneuver. It is a very risky and dangerous move. One that does not initially appear necessary.

        • Samurai Jack

I agree, and said as much last week. It’s like something out of Rummyworld, with a large number of known unknowns. Her goal should simply be to delay things and wait for the cavalry. Which is what she’s doing, technically, I guess. But I agree she’s going about it in a seemingly reckless manner.

          • I trust Alex has a suitable “WHOA!” in store for us or else why go through all this planning? I have this funny visual of Amanda saying “go!” to Kyle. He goes to slag the torus when he sees Duncan and just… stops. Guh. “What now?”

    • Wynona Tutu Facebook? HA! I’m going to start saying that instead.

As for the rest, I’m waiting in that corner over there —–> hiding my eyes behind splayed fingers because I’ve already chewed my nails (not really, but you know what I mean).

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

The military sure has changed a lot.

        • Well you know how pop culture infiltrates everything.

      • Thank you, admiral! I’m very old-shool in my comics. Back in the day writers used “colorful metaphors” in place of swearing, which was banned by the CCA. Examples, like “Hot spam!” and “holy spit!” stick out in my mind. I needed a quick alternative that still spelled “WTF” so why not have fun? Glad you enjoyed. Alex asked for my plan and invited anyone to offer their ideas in his comment to the WTF post above so give it a look and pass it on? I’d like to read what others would do. How would you plan the battle?

        • Kinda like: Holy Heavy Metal, Batman. What Robin said in… Well in one of those terrible Joel Schumacher Batman movies.

How would I plan it? I always figure there are two main reasons a plan might go awry. 1) Lack of/ or over confidence – Either someone sabotages themselves by not believing enough (ahem Tsunami) or they over look a detail because they think too highly of their abilities (the Silver Duo) and 2) Over or under estimating the other side – like how crazy/desperate the other side is. (I suppose that just supports reason 1)

Of course there are other reasons plans go badly, but those are my main two. (And I see both all over these pages which is partly what makes me so nervous)

In any case one needs be flexible in a plan. Sure a good plan helps, but when you have a wild card like Fluke (or reason number 2 as well from the other side), a plan needs to be free enough to improvise.

Now, for me, I don’t think it’s a good idea to directly challenge the Silver Duo. Yes, they need to disable the Duncanator and find a way to keep PP busy, but I would feel better if the team would come in side ways.

I would have them try to sneak up from the treeline to disable to Ring o’Death, maybe remove a couple of the minions. See if they can do something about the hostages.

There are probably wards and other defences protecting the Silver Duo to keep such things from happening. I would expect no less of a 6000 year old magic worker and The Duncanator (I mean they’re in a forest, a bear could come along). They haven’t gotten to where they’ve gotten by being sloppy. This of course could be that over confidence I spoke of.

Then again, they could be planning to have Team YP interrupt. This would be Team YP under-estimating their opponents.

I really have no idea how Alex is going to handle it. I really have no idea how I would handle it. We all just believe/know that the plan will fail because that’s what plans have a tendency to do, especially when one side really has no experience with the other, just rumor, conjecture and news stories. This would also be a point in the Silver Duos favor, because they could have been watching Team YP all these years and know their strategies. Of course they could just be thinking they’re a bunch of foolish kids playing hero and that’s a bad idea. (Again see reason 1 & 2)

          Sorry this is so scattered.

          • Not scattered one bit. It’s scintillating and well thought out. However, I think we’ve all forgotten one important issue…………

I’m sure that Amanda’s Colonel Mom has Galactus’ iPhone number on her favorites list. So, I suspect that when things look realllllly near a bad END, Colonel Mom can make a phone call and ask a personal favor. Normally this wouldn’t seem reasonable, but I suspect that after that drunken weekend that Colonel Mom and Galactus spent in Cabo San Lucas (euphemistic fireworks indeed) that he won’t feel at all put out to teleport over and squish him some Duncan/Sircea under those planet sized feet.

6,000 years old makes Sircy just a wee babe from Big G’s POV and then to have an infant like Duncan threaten his daughter Amand….. (ULP)….. sorry @alexwoolfson:disqus. I didn’t mean to hand out any family-tree spoilers. Honestly.

Erm… let’s just say that Colonel Mom has Big G’s name in her contact list and he doesn’t consider either Sircy or Duncs all that serious. Just a bit of Deus ex Galactica and all will be well.

Take care all. As usual the Admiral is pretty much right on the money. 😀

          • But wouldn’t that be Superpowered individual ex machina? 😛

          • Not scattered at all. Your approach bespeaks great patience and wisdom that is practical in a theoretical situation like this. Like you state, there are likely wards all over that field against which a single untoward twitch brings down the full, untethered might of the silver duo. Isn’t that how it works in comics? Generally, the heroes rush in where angels fear to tread, get their butts handed to them, cleverly escape the death trap, and then surprise the bad guys at the moment of ultimate glory. Though, I would not put it past Alex to play that trope against his readers. Remember how Gordon wagged his finger about this being “the reald world” and not a comic book? How utterly ironic.

          • I fully expecting Alex to twist, jump left into a double backflip and stick the landing when we expect him to zag and jump to the right three paces.

That is all I know to be true, to expect the unexpected unexpectedly.

    • You’re very welcome, Donald! I’m delighted you’re so engaged!

And now I’m curious — I think you’ve given some hints about this, but what would your plan be? In what ways would it be superior to what’s been presented so far? And in what ways could you see your plan going south at the hands of these villains?

(This is an open question. I’d be very interested to hear Samurai’s and others take on this. Sadly, Command can’t hear you. But it’s this kind of “nerdgassing” that my friends and I used to engage in for hours, so it’ll be fun for me to see what you would do in Commander’s place and whether you think Commander would agree with your alternative.)

      • Alex, first, I appreciate your interest in my idea. I’ll get right to it as to not waste your time. The plan I have in mind is based on playing to the team’s strength while focusing firmly on known factors. Lastly, I take into account information as it is presented in-story.

Duncan and Sircea have been repeatedly mentioned as two of the most dangerous and powerful villains in the world. Their age suggest decades of experience taking on heroes far more powerful and experienced than the Young Protectors. Taking this into account I plan for the kids to go into this confrontation at a severe disadvantage. The villains have home turf advantage, a large force of flunkies, and considerable power to bear.

My plan operates from two safe assumptions: first, Duncan and Sircea have defenses in place and, secondly, they are expecting opposition. The kids have limited time before the bad guys bring their full power to bear so they must strike quickly and with precision.

Specifics. I would have the team move quickly against the cube full of civilians. Have Mitch, Kyle, Gordon, and Spooky work on moving the entire cube with sacrifices. Together they can quickly handle issues like set into a foundation, magical warding, bomb, etc. Amanda and Paul at this junction serve to cover and back up those working on the cube.

Gordon uses water from the river to create a slide under the cube. Mitch pushes at the back. Move the cube to the river where it becomes a moving target. At this point the team has a defensible position against cultists in robes. They disrupt the ritual by removing the sacrifices, remove any potential hostages from the field, and most importantly, they completely nullify the home turf advantage Sircea and Duncan currently enjoy. The villains are forced to leave their bunker and chase the kids, who only need to hold out until the cavalry arrives.

This is a longshot at best but it has the advantage of playing every member of the team to their strengths. They have a single, defensible target that they focus on. They cover each other, and move quickly. The plan is flexible, allowing them to react quickly to unexpected challenges.

How might it go wrong? OMG where to start. The cube might have a magical ward that requires considerable time for Spooky to unravel. It might simply be too heavy for everyone to move. The bomb might have a proximity sensor and or defenses against tampering. This says nothing about Sircea having a ward on the field that paralyzes anyone not wearing a rune. The primary weakness of my plan is that I have no idea where the power of YP stacks against the villains. Duncan and Sircea might be able to swat the team down effortlessly or they might be in for the fight of their lives. I look forward to reading how it plays out. Thank you again for your inquiry!

        • Nicely reasoned, Donald. 🙂

          • Yeah, well, I’m good at armchair quarterbacking. I know I’m no good in a real fight. 🙂 This is why you have the successful online comic and I’m still figuring out how to do concept sketches on Photoshop.

  • The page is, as Donald says below, artistically ‘fantastic’. I couldn’t agree more. Thank you all for giving us an ever changing visual feast.

Of course, I don’t KNOW, but I think Amanda is way too smart. She is doing for her team what she’s doing for us readers. She’s walking everyone through the risks and possible ‘fails’. She does have testosterone-filled young men (and I include Tsunami in that) in her crew. She needs them to understand in specific each of the possibilities that could go wrong.

Can Alex twist me about and leave me floundering… oh… gee… that would be YESSSS! But, I have yet to see him do something goofy. (Amanda probably gives Alex advice in-between pages.) So I think, as we readers get to see what can go wrong, Amanda is helping her team see it too. There is no doubt that these don’t all seem like workable plans.

So I’m anxious to see what her REAL plan is. If you think I’m totally off… think about how powerful it is to have that final cautionary worry come out of our feisty Paul in that last panel (and NOT the ‘cautious’ Commander).

Look at that beautiful expression on his worried face in the last panel. I think he’s understanding exactly what Amanda wants him to… “What happens to our Spooky if he’s unprotected when Sircea locks and loads? That is a very sobering thought.

So as we see what can go wrong. So can the team. I wonder what she REALLY plans for them to do, I’ll just bet that when she unfurls her real plan… having thoroughly envisioned the ‘epic fails’… the team will be with her 100%

Okay, I’m all nerves too. I never thought I’d be in support of Hollywood’s self-serving sequel behavior, but I’m hopeful that Alex needs all of the YPs alive and well for his next book. So ‘adversity’ aside, I’m counting on everyone surviving for Alex’ next book. Hmmmm… of course Marvel has brought how many people back to life over the years? Oh never mind.

Thank you Alex, Adam & Veronica. It’s getting thrilling and the work is terrific and keeping pace with the excitement to come.

    • Chris!!! *hugs*

    • You’re very welcome, Chris! You’ll have to let me know your thoughts as the plan continues to be revealed. 🙂

  • Amberella

All I can see are Tsunamis tight buns

  • Can you fix the archive page, sometimes I can’t check in here for weeks and I have to start where Spooky is announcing his name and it’s annoying to flip through pages.

    • Hi tom! I’m sure Alex will checkout the archive page as soon as he can. In the meantime I do know of many readers such as yourself who will bookmark the last page they were on and when they’ve read beyond it they will rebookmark and delete the old one. I hope that helps. 🙂

    • Actually, Tom and I exchanged an email about this. It can be a bit confusing that the Bonus Comic is placed after the currently updating Chapter 3 pages so he had missed that he could just scroll up to find them.

Because the Bonus Comic is a separate chapter, I unfortunately can’t shove it in the middle of Chapter 3 but the problem will be solved once the Bonus Comic is removed. 🙂

    • Another way to do it: Make a bookmark on the current page, so that’s the one that opens when you go to the comic. Then quickly go to the newest page by clicking ‘Last’ under the page.
I have the very first page bookmarked and does this. No different than going to the ‘homepage’ and clicking on the link to newest page.

  • Saxon_Brenton

David raises some very good tactical points in his post below. For my part I fully expect the Young Protectors to either fail or acheive an only partial success for the meta reason that we’re into the middle chapter of a 5 chapter plus interludes story. If the good guys get a full victory now, it kind of begs the question as to which direction the plot will have to veer off in.

With that constraint in mind, I expect (in general terms) for Commander to plan something smart and awesome, which will also involve Fly Boy getting to deployed in a way that is cool and awesome (which should please dokidoki). But then the Priestess will produce her own smart and awesome countermove. This might be the outright defeat and capture of the Young Protectors; it may involve revealing that the YP’s were tricked into getting Red Hot to charge up the portal with his fire powers under the belief that he was destroying it; or it may involve the Priestess simply having set up this site as a distraction while the real portal is hundreds of kilometres away. Then the YPs will be all “Aw crap”, and then there’ll probably be a scene where the bureaucrats try to chew out the YPs for political advantage, and…

At least that’s what’s inside my headspace at the moment. Alex will probably surprise us, however.

And now I need to head off for RPGing. I’ll be back this evening, probably after the next page is posted.

Anyone want to see a video of an adorable dachshund puppy learning to ring a bell? Here you go:

(The whole video is pretty much the same thing, so if you don’t want to watch all of it you won’t be missing any surprises.)

  • 🙁 Doki’s stomach is being mean to her. 🙁 Along with a sore throat that is only on the right side. -_-

But anyway! Yaoi of the Wild West is an up and running forum for discussing and sharing. We have threads for letting you know when comics update, books to read, comic recommendations, fanfiction, art, and others. The updates section seems to be very popular (the individual threads get a lot of views). ^_^ It is still fairly young and suggestions on how to improve it are welcome.

If you want to be a registered member of the forum, you can use this link (gives me recruitment credit ^_^ but you don’t have to ^_^)

To just check it out go here:
