She’s got it… Yeah, baby, she’s got it…

(This will be a double-page spread in the printed book. To see a larger version, click here.)

I’m at YaoiCon 2014 in San Francisco this weekend and I’m having an amazing time getting a chance to meet so many of you! It’s been particularly fun to hear about the friendships that have been formed just through the Comments Section of this comic (that’s so gratifying) and finally getting to put beautiful faces to names of cool folk here in the Comments Section (and also get to see long-time fans who I’ve had the pleasure of meeting at Cons before. It’s like Old Home week! YaoiCon truly is very special! 🙂 )

Just a heads up: they moved me from Booth 18 to Booth 9 if you’re trying to find me. And I’ll be speaking on a couple panels starting tomorrow. This is my first time with a booth at YaoiCon and I’d love to see you! If you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by! 😀

(And if you come by to say hi, please let me know what your Disqus/Kickstarter username is as well — that’s how I’ll really know who you are! 😉 )

We had our sixty-first bonus page in a row on Wednesday and then y’all blasted past the target on the donation bar below. That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, September 17th (page 62!), Wednesday, September 24th (page 64!), Wednesday, October 1st (page 66!), Wednesday, October 8th (page 68!), Wednesday, October 15th (page 70!) and Wednesday, October 22nd (page 72!), there will now be an additional bonus page (page 74!) on Wednesday, October 29th! YOU ARE ALL SO AWESOME! 😀

Special thanks go out to long-time supporters alban j. (who makes their fourth generous donation to The Young Protectors!), & Saxon B. (who makes their 113th generous donation to The Young Protectors! Thank you, Saxon!) for their generous donations over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to long-time friend of The Young Protectors Robert B. for their super-generous $25 donations! And this makes Robert’s eighty-fourth super-generous donation to this comic!

And finally, ZOMG!, very warm hugs and very grateful bows go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for his stunningly generous $100 donation, his 102nd stunningly generous donation to this comic! Thank you so much for your amazing support, Christopher, and being such an awesome member of our community. I’ve already had two readers mention to me today how much they enjoy your comments. You rock, Sir!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! I feel like a proud parent showing off Sircea’s baby pictures on prom night. And it seems like The Platinum Priestess has no problem thinking she could rule in Hell if need be. Is she right? How will Duncan react to these assertions? And most importantly, what would silibub choose to wear on prom night with this Warrior Queen?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! Edit 9/16/14 10:01 PM: You’ve done it again! You’ve yet again blasted past the target in the donation bar below! • silibub

Oh I am so here for this.

    • Congratz.

      • silibub

Holy trinity for me! How nice.

        • And it’s kind of a page dedicated for you ^_^

    • Sapfo

So, what are you going to do with this Virgin?

      • silibub

*shrug* Release it into the pen with the others? They’re herding the goats for me.

        • Sapfo

          They are all milkmaids then?

          • silibub

Shepherdesses? Whatever they feel like calling themselves, just keep those goats clean!

          • Terri Sutton

Do they feed the goats with their tears?

          • silibub

Nooo, they shouldn’t have to. My goat pen is a pastoral ideal — rolling hills, beautiful landscape and weather. Nothing to cry about unless they’re allergic to grass or something.

          • Sapfo

            Then I be doing the crying for all of us ;_;

    • davefragments

      yay

  • Well she IS badass

  • Sapfo

    This looks so great!
    So many details!

  • silibub

I seriously can’t wait to see the colors, this is an amazing page!

    • I saw your post just as I was hitting post on mine. So..umm. jinx!

      • silibub

        LOL, the sentiment bears repeating!

  • I can’t wait to see this in color. I mean it’s awesome as is, but some color…? Holy shit!

    • silibub

I want to see what color her hair is.

      • Terri Sutton

        Me too. So so badly.

      • Would not it be crazy if her hair was always the current color?

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Definitely!

      • Saxon_Brenton

For my part I want to see what colour those two guys in the top right hand corner that she’s bazorting are. Are they humans, or green kinda-orc kin? (If we can have dragons, we can have orcs) Heck, the skull helmet that the guy on the far right is wearing is monstrous enough to make me wonder what it’s from. That said, the contrast of her wearing fur and them wearing bracers, armlets and loincloths makes me wonder if they might by Conan-style Hyperborea pastiches.

        • Klaus

Easter Island is so small and so remote that it is diffcult that anything affecting the rest of the world could happen there before modern tranhsportation.

          • David Welbourn

mm, But since we know the TYP universe contains aliens and alien tech, it’s not completely unreasonable to suppose that maybe aliens landed there in the long ago past and made the place important.

          • Klaus

Or demons may have opened a gate there, to sneak into our world where few could see them. But how did she find out? How did she ever hear of Eater Island back then?

          • SofiaT

Maybe she originates from Easter Island. That’s the oldest memory in the page, it might be because that’s where her journey throughout the centuries starts.

Also, Easter Island is still very mysterious. Those huge statuses, we don’t know who made them and why. It fits the whole mystery of Sircea’s existence if she’s from there. And they say cannibalism was practiced there once, it’s entirely possible these guys tried to eat her and she taught them a lesson… Maybe even she discovered her powers while defending herself.

          • Klaus

I wonder if her European looks are her natural form, or a form she assumed when Europe came to prominence?

      • Oooh, yeah, huh. Was she always with the white-ish hair or was she a platinum blond

        • Klaus

          Platinum was unknown back then.

          • Terri Sutton

The word and the metal was unknown, but that hair colour existed but was obviously called something else.

          • SofiaT

Silver? I can never tell platinum from silver anyway, I’m very bad when it comes to precious metals.

          • Terri Sutton

Add white gold to the list and that’s my level of jewellery blindness.

          • SofiaT

Isn’t white gold and platinum the same thing?
I always thought it was, just has two names. :0/

That’s how bad I am at it.

          • Klaus

White gold is gold alloyed with silver. Gold is usually alloyed with something, since pure gold is too soft for coins or most jewelry.

          • Terri Sutton

I’ve seen Platinum and White Gold jewellery side by side in a Jewellers so I had assumed they were different metals.

          • SofiaT

I don’t step foot into jewellery stores, I dislike expensive jewellery. 😀

I remember reading somewhere that there is no woman alive that doesn’t like diamonds and thinking “Um, yes there is. Moi”.

          • Terri Sutton

I have only step into Jewellers because my mother is impossible to buy for, so I default to buying her a pair of yellow gold earrings (she won’t wear silver, so she is expensive to buy for as well).

          • Dennis Grace

White gold is an alloy of gold and a white metal. Originally, the white metal was silver (to keep it soft enough to set stones) or nickel (for hardness). These days, nickel or manganese provide the hard white gold alloys while palladium usually provides the white for soft alloys for setting stones. In either case, a rhodium plating is applied for durability. Platinum has been used, but this is a rare choice because of the expense. If they can afford to make an alloy with platinum, most jewelers prefer to skip the alloys and just use platinum.

  • silibub

And I like how her staff keeps changing with the times, but it’s always present. Nice touch!

  • Larkle

‘So, if you want to cower and run away, Duncan, I have options.’

  • SofiaT

She’s fought dragons?!? *grudgingly admires Sircea*

I can’t say it surprises me that she’s been worshiped as a goddess.
But now she reminds me Essa from the Kate Daniels series even more.
    And that’s not a compliment.

    • silibub

I think I’m forming a reading list based on your comments alone.

      • SofiaT

I’m very curious to see what you’ll think of Essa. 😀
But seriously, do read Kate Daniels. She’s one bad-ass heroine.

  • Terri Sutton

Is this page implying that dinosaurs are demons?

    • SofiaT

Dinosaurs roamed the earth long time before the humans appeared on it. I believe that’s a (very ugly) dragon.

      • davefragments

        gargoyle

      • Terri Sutton

I know that in this universe what dinosaurs are. I was a child (I know some people who will gladly argue that).

But that “dragon” looks like an ugly 80’s cartoon dinosaur with bat wings.

        • SofiaT

(Oh, I wonder if in the finished version of the page he will be purple! )

I was commenting on the fact that there are people in medieval garb behind Sircea on that memory -so he can’t be a dinosaur. And her on the horse, she looks just like a female St. George slaying the dragon.

          • Terri Sutton

Maybe PP is St. George. Is just that humans are patriarchal misogynistic dicks and made her a man in the myths, because a woman slaying a dragon is just silly.

          • SofiaT

In Greek folklore it’s Alexander the Great who slays the dragon. Because we’re not just misogynistic dicks, we’re nationalistic, misogynistic dicks.

          • silibub

I’m surprised we Americans haven’t claimed it was like, George Washington or someone yet. Maybe in a few hundred years.

          • Terri Sutton

Don’t be silly. Its Abe Lincoln who slayed a dragon.

          • I thought Abe Lincoln was the Vampire Hunter?

          • LOL.. I had that exact same thought.

          • Terri Sutton

Not only was Abe Lincoln President, he was a Vampire Slayer and a Werewolf Hunter. But the guy needed some down time and needed a hobby, and Dragon Slaying is the coolest of all the hobbies.

          • I thought that was vampires
            (stupid pun)

          • Klaus

But wasn’t George himself Greek? His original name was Georgeos.

The Danish version sets the event at Svendborg. The hero is called Jørgen. When offered marriage to the princess as a reward, he asks in stead for a plot of land to build a hospital. That is why Danish leper colonies were called Skt. Jørgens gård.

          • SofiaT

Yeah, he was. But the whole tale of Alexander becoming a champion of the people (in other tales he slays the Turks, even though Turkish tribes didn’t arrive in Asia Minor till a thousand years after Alexander’s time) was born much later. It’s folklore, oral tradition that mutated throughout the centuries, depending on who was the enemy at the time.

    • Klaus

Or that some demons look similar to dinosaurs.

      • Terri Sutton

Or that some demons can take other forms and enjoy taking the forms of dinosaurs.

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

It’s She Who Must Be Obeyed!

You know, archaic humans DID know how to sew…

  • LOL.. looking at Alex’ note I can only say how appropriate it is that Silibub got the V on this page.

    • silibub

*busts out laughing* Best day ever!

  • So no matter what happens, Sircea plans on taking her place above everyone else.

Um…if we go by more recent history, human kind kinda doesn’t take too kindly to being ruled so.

    • silibub

Yeah, but if it’s between being ruled and being overrun by demons, people might take the knee.

      • People can be such contrary creatures. They might fight with her at first, to get rid of the, you know, demons, but afterwards I think we’d see some groups start fighting against her.

        • silibub

I’m sure there’d eventually be an uprising if she somehow wound up a ruler. And since she says she rules harshly, it wouldn’t be pretty.

          • Nope. Not pretty at all.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Well, Sircea would still be pretty.

          • silibub

            Naturally!

          • Of course. Not a hair out of place.

          • davefragments

The 2005 version of King Kong has Naomi Watts running down 10 blocks or 34th street to the Empire State Building in High Heels and then she climbs the outside ladder bars on the Empire state in a ball gown and high heels. Some people cheered in the theater it was so much fun to watch.

          • Terri Sutton

            Well that goes without saying.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Whooo! Sircea backstory stuff!

  • SofiaT

I really look forward to the coloured page!
Will her hair be platinum even in her youth?

    • silibub

Inquiring minds really, really wanna know.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Sircea has seen some serious shit.

    • SofiaT

Sircea has done some serious shit.

  • silibub

Dude. She says she’s ruled “your kind” time and time again. What is she?

    • stickfigurefairytales

      A time lord?

      • silibub

Nah, apparently those are all white guys?

        • Sapfo

          time lady?

        • stickfigurefairytales

There have been some female ones, iirc.

          • silibub

Oh, so there’s more than one. I really don’t know much about Doctor Who, obviously!

          • stickfigurefairytales

I think that all of the other Time Lords are dead now? But in the earlier years of the show there were some female ones who appeared (I have a friend who’s a Doctor Who fan from childhood, and she knows a lot about the show over the years.)

        • Saxon_Brenton

In the classic series there where a small number of women (Romana, the Rani, Flavia and Rodan all spring to mind). In the new series there have been a few women and non-whites. And as of the 50th anniversary Gallifrey is merely locked away in an other-dimensional space as part of clever trick by the Doctor to hide it from the Daleks.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Thank you, Saxon!

          • silibub

Good info! Sounds like the series has interesting lore.

    • Somehow the theory of a (fallen) deity doesn’t seem all off now.

    • SofiaT

If she was human once, she certainly doesn’t consider herself one now.

  • Making peoples hearts explode just with her powers and a stick.. how bloody and badass.

Looking at the different places she ruled, Easter Islands, the vikings, Aztec (or is that Mayan?) – girl has been around the world a time or two.

  • Sapfo

It seems like her life have always been a fighte for power. And now again… maybe we should do an invervention.

“Dear Sircea. Know that we people here love you very much… NO SIRCEA! NOOO!”
    …..
    *puff*

  • stickfigurefairytales

I bet all those people/beings in Sircea’s past wondered what those apparent non-sequiturs were about. (How many centuries would she have had to wait to finish that sentence if she’d been saying it at the times shown?) Especially since modern English didn’t exist yet.

    • silibub

Haha, I think it’s a cool stylistic choice — like she’s remembering that vividly as she speaks. (Maybe even doing the poses, although I wonder how she’d manage the one on horseback.)

      • Terri Sutton

She’d obviously magiked up a horse, how else would she do it.

      • SofiaT

Maybe she’s projecting an illusion. Actually showing Duncan all she’s lived through, like a vision.

    • Terri Sutton

One of the kneeling dudes is so calling for the local scribe to write down the prophesy the Goddess is obviously saying.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I strongly suspect that, actually, this is another page where her imagination is filling in the blanks – kind of like the way she got the details of Duncan and Kyle in bed together slightly wrong. In this case she was actually there, and so the details are probably a lot more accurate, but it’s still the case that the visuals we see are coming from her minds eye 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I know – I was just being silly. 😀

        • Saxon_Brenton

And I was being cheerfully nitpicky. Sorry. There’s so many comments coming in that I don’t have time to stop and give my replies the consideration that they need.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            No problem! 🙂

  • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, this might be a bit of a stretch, but…
Below I’ve speculated that in the scene at top right, the contrast of Sircea wearing furs but fighting guys in loincloths and bracers seems that she’s filling the role of Conan the barabarian.
Other people have speculated that in the scene at bottom left where she’s fighting the dragon she’s filling the role of the English St George (or the Greek Alexander the Great).
So if this isn’t just me letting my imagination run away with me… can anyone make a guess as to what famous Aztec/meso-American figure she would be filling in for in the scene at bottom right?

    • stickfigurefairytales

But Conan wasn’t a historical or folkloric hero, was he?

      • davefragments

the human sacrifice sect that he fought was historical.

        • stickfigurefairytales

But still, Conan himself was a 20th century character invention.

          • davefragments

            absolutely.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Conan was fictional, created by Robert E Howard in the 1930s. But he’s more-or-less the archetype for the ‘mighty thewed, sword-swinging barbarian hero’, so she might be filling the same sort of role (and if we want to get really nitpicky, then unless there’s been another Disney extension to the copyright laws that I’ve missed, then the earliest Conan stories are out of copyright, so it might be that Conan actually existed in the YP universe 🙂

        • stickfigurefairytales

I guess that sort of hero would arguably be more of a Beowulf figure, historically speaking, but that wouldn’t fit well with the scenario we see PP in here.

          • Terri Sutton

Are you saying Beowulf didn’t make dudes hearts explode with the power of his mind!? I am feeling so jipped so much now.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Well, he didn’t do it on Easter Island, that’s all I’m saying.

          • davefragments

What if she was the Grendel’s Mother?

          • stickfigurefairytales

I could see that. Especially if one follows the example of Angelina Jolie as Grendel’s Hot Mom.

    • SofiaT

Weren’t Aztec kings worshiped as gods? She could be Teotlalco.

      • silibub

The only deity I know off the top of my head is Quetzalcoatl.

        • Saxon_Brenton

Ah! Who IIRC was a white god from over the sea. Is the platinum coloured hair significant? The problem is that Quetzalcoatl was supposed to be one of the less bloodthirsty Aztec gods, so that may not fit the personality profile. It becomes a question: is the Platinum Priestess truly unpleasant and evil, or merely utterly ruthless and pragmatic?

          • silibub

I would lean toward ruthless/pragmatic, but then again I’m biased.

          • Klaus

Have we seen PP being bloodthirsty? Compared to South Hummingbird (sorry, I don’t remember how to spell that in Nawatl) Tlaloc or Xipe Totec, “less bloodthirsty” dosn’t really say much.

          • Saxon_Brenton

We have not seen the Priestess be bloodthirsty. So far all we have seen is her being utterly pragmatic and ruthless in trying to (a) regain her power, and (b) save the world. Objectively the only things that we can say against her is that, given a reasonable option to consult with another magic-user who is sane (Spooky Jones), she has dismissed the notion out of hand.

        • SofiaT

Tanatloc!!! (Oops, that’s from Thorgal. Hehe, you may want to put that in your reading list too. Belgian comic, one of the best european comics, in my not-so-humble opinion.)

      • My first thought was a possible Itzpapalotl (goddess of sacrifice) since that’s the only Aztec goddess I know the name of.

        • Klaus

There is Coatlicue. It means Snake Skirt. She is the mother of South Hummingbird. Hewas one of the two gods worshipped on the main pyramid of the Aztec Tenochtitlan.

    • SofiaT

(*whispers*: in the tradition of the church, we got St George slaying the dragon too. The whole Alexander legend doing the slaying was born during the centuries of Ottoman occupation, when people weren’t allowed to learn their history, so teaching history to the younger generations became a secret thing, passed down orally… and history and myths got all mixed up in the minds of the poor, uneducated people who needed symbols to remind them of their repressed heritage.

Ask me to tell you the story of the “water of immortality” (the reason why Alexander tried to conquer the world) and how every shipwreck in the Aegean is connected to it, some time. Exciting stuff.)

  • Klaus

Something does not add up here. This page is numbered 60-61. We are promised page 61 on Wednesday.

    • Sapfo

      Sneaky Alex?
(I think he will fix it after the con)

    • Sneaky Alex surprise, or it ended up being a 2 page spread because it seemed wrong to put all this into one page 🙂

  • davefragments

I said this once before – What if the Second Sin was not fratricide but magic, and what if the twins were not brothers? What if Sircea ended up as the biblical cain in our literature and is so cursed that the earth will not accept her body, that her atoms stand apart from the rest of the world because of the mark? Then she would be essentially immortal and have the time and ambition to gain this power. After all, what does a cursed sinner – cursed but the Almighty have to fear? Satan – hardly. Like Sisyphus she would be unique.

Thanks to the misogynist and paternalistic tendencies of man, she became in the verbal histories and the written ones Cain?

    • silibub

      That’s a really interesting theory!

    • Danny

      I agree with @silibub:disqus here, that’s a fascinating theory!

  • silibub

This is a really great discussion, but I have to go to bed. The pencils are beautiful, and I’m really looking forward to the colored page! And within the next couple of days I’ll see if I can draw up a “prom” picture, since apparently I have a fearsome and lovely lady to escort. ♥

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Goodnight then.

    • SofiaT

Night! Glad you got to enjoy your page! 😉

    • Night Silibub!

    • I’m looking forward to that. 🙂

  • Sapfo

Again I can blam Alex for something. Bananarama lead to another song that lead to another and another, and now I am right now listening to Tina Turner “the Best!”.

This new page is Simple the Best Alex! I can hardly wait for the colors and to see it in all it´s glory!

    Have fun at the con.

    • Terri Sutton

Here’s hoping he never send us to TV Tropes. We’ll all be lost for days.

      • Sapfo

Oh I lost my soul there a few times already 😉

    • Thank you, Sapfo! 🙂

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

She has a very bad “perfection complex”.

  • So basically, Duncan, she’s telling you she doesn’t care if you stay or go. She doesn’t need you. She’s Sircea and there is nothing she can’t do. She’s her own Prince Charming.

    • Terri Sutton

I really want to make a self-love joke here.

      • Ha!

I suppose it would’ve been better to say she was a self-rescuing goddess?

        • Terri Sutton

My thoughts immediately went to; Prince Charming rescues woman, marries woman, have kids with woman and lives happily ever after.

So PP rescues herself, marries herself, has kids with herself and lives happily ever after. The self-love jokes seemed saner.

        • mogoskier

Somewhere here is a 50 shades of Gray joke

I thought 50 Shades of Gray was a joke?

          • *Snerk!*

          • But does anyone really want to make it? 🙂

  • Checking in from the Bishie Bingo to see the new page! I really love the pencil pages (and will write longer comment later…) 😉

    • Sapfo

Starr! Now you have to remember, you do not watch with yout hands. So no touching…. unless the allow such things that is <..>

      • …if you win that is exactly the point 😉 removing clothing…

  • No_One_Special

wow she has one major ego, I would love to see it get squashed under Reds feet.. Great job thanks. I love how you do your back flashes in black and white so realistic,

  • Irishyankee

I think she’s Eris. I really think she’s the kind of person who would throw out the Apple of discord.

    • Klaus

She seems eager to sow discord between Duncan and herself.

  • Hmm.. now I wish I knew a little more about various old civilizations and religions (I might look some up later).

We know she’s at least 6000 years old, so trying to figure out who she could be in various times could be pretty damn hard. It depends on when she went from being a potential actual goddess, to being worshipped as one and finally be the seen (and worshipped) as the priestess of someone or some thing.
Being seen as a priestess alone can cover so many things.

Only things that’s clear is that along the years her status as a power has been degrading, now to a degree where she’s also aging – making her extremely focused on getting her powers back to where they used to be.

After milleniums it must be hard to look age/death in the eyes. For Duncan his first priority is securing the weakening walls, but secondly he also wants his youth back and great power. For Sircea I believe the priority of those two things is the opposite.

    • Klaus

She seems to have moved aroubd a lot. For the dragon fight she wears a European outfit. She is also seen in the middle of the pacific and in Mesoamerica.

    • Kate G

Hm, oldest civilization? That would be 9000 BC (Tamil civilization), so older than 6,000 years (it’s at least 11,000), Danish. Well, that’s the oldest archaeologists have found disputably.

I like how you think though. Many polytheistic religions have the same gods/goddesses, they just change names. Aphrodite, the goddess of Love in Greek mythology, is Venus in Roman mythology, Freya in Norse mythology and Aine in Celtic (I forgot the one in Egyptian mythology; I USED to know it.)

Hecate is another very popular goddess you see morphing among polytheistic ancient religions. She’s known most popularly as the goddess of the crossroads/magic/witches, but she’s also categorized as a goddess of death. Incarnations of the Goddess/God of Death: Nergal (Babylonian), Donn (Celtic), Shinigami (Japan), Anubis (guardian of the dead) (Egyptian), Osiris (Lord of the Dead), Nepthys (Escorts souls to the dead) (Egyptian), Hecate (Greek), Hel (Norse), Mania (Roman), and the Grim Reaper (traditional European mythology).

I almost wonder if she has the ability to switch sexes throughout the ages to be able to become different forms of gods. It makes me think. Just a thought, you know?

      • Kate G

Excuse my rambling of mythology. I’m a mythology geek.

        • Klaus

          You are not alone.

          • Kate G

I did a whole semester in college on mythology and fairy tales. I was in Heaven. Others were in Hell. I hadn’t studied Norse mythology before that class so I was like, “WHEEEEEEEE.” I think some people thought I was high on drugs; no, I was high on learning. Ba ha ha ha! My dad has the Norse mythology book as it’s just not my cup of tea. Norse is so confusing. The three realms they have and how everything goes down just makes zero sense to me; I need idiot Norse.

      • Klaus

Some godt were imported from one vulture to another. E.g. the Romans imported Apollo, Kybele, Isis and Serapis, among others. But many attemps to to equate gods from one culure with those from another are rather far fetched. I don’t know how well Aphrodite matches Venus, but Mars and Minerva are poor fits for Ares and Athene, respectively.

        • SofiaT

The “characters” of the gods changed in some cases, because each nation gave its gods its own characteristics (for example the Romans really worshiped Mars while the Greeks barely tolerated Ares -they never made sacrifices to his honor because they thought men dying in battle was sacrifice enough, and he’s also the only Olympian not to have temples built. Jupiter was also more pious than Zeus, more “dignified”).

However, the mythology (the origin stories, if you like) behind each god, is the same. They really are the same pantheon, with some personality modifications.

Also, is “Athene” the name of Athena in Danish?

          • Kate G

“Athene” is another translation of Athena.

          • Terri Sutton

I thought that Archaeologists found remains of what appeared to be a temple dedicated to Ares in Athens?

But I did come across that info in an 10-15 yr old archaeology doco, so probably not accurate.

          • Kate G

There is. It’s in the northern part of Ancient Agora of Athens. The Greeks are interesting in that each city-state tended to worship different gods differently. Athens was more keen on Athena, whom it’s named after. Sparta was more keen on Ares, the god of war, as it was a war city-state. However, each city-state did usually have temples to other gods as well.

          • SofiaT

The Spartans would sacrifice dogs to him (if I remember correctly) and also scream when they attacked in battle, as a tribute to Enyo, Ares’ companion (or nanny according to others) but there was still no temple of Ares in Sparta. I believe the only temples of his that could be found in ancient Greece prior to the Romans, were in Thrace, the land of his birth.

          • SofiaT

Any temple of Ares found in the mainland (not the colonies) was built after the Romans conquered Greece.

The one in the ancient Agora, is believed to have been dedicated to another god first (most likely Athena) and then dedicated to Ares by the Romans.

          • Terri Sutton

Thanks. Trying to remember the details of all the docos I used to watch is kinda frustrating, especially when I know it is all probably out-dated by now.

          • Kate G

I know. It’s crazy how out-dated some stuff we used to watch as children is and I’m only 25. I mean, Pluto is no longer a planet! (It will always be a planet to me!) Poor Pluto.

          • Terri Sutton

Wasn’t there a Twitter campaign to reinstate Pluto as a planet?

I hate how Pluto is no longer a “real” planet, it means my 7th grade project on Pluto is now totally invalid.

          • SofiaT

How can Pluto not be a planet, I’ll never understand.

It feels like a demotion. 🙁

Can planets (or former planets as the case may be) have their feelings hurt?

          • Klaus

The sun and moon were considered planets for many centuries. The first astroids the were discovered were considered planets for a time. Words change their meaning.

          • Kate G

I don’t know, but Pluto the Disney dog sure was sad. 🙁 I was too! Pluto shall always be a planet to me!

          • Klaus

If Pluto then why not Sedna and Ceres? Ceres can actually be seen with the naked eye under optimal conditions (though only then). Sedna is bigger than Pluto. Where do you stop?

          • SofiaT

            No worries 🙂

I read Kate’s comment below and I wanted to point out that the temple she refers to, was identified as a temple of Ares by Pausanias, which is why it’s still known as such. But Pausanias lived in 2nd century AD, so Greece had already been conquered by the Romans a few hundred years ago.

That temple was first built in 5th century BC though and the archaeologists believe it was originally a temple to another god, and the Romans re-dedicated it to Ares as a tribute to the grandson of emperor Augustus, whose name was Ares.

          • Klaus

Yes, Athene is the Danish spelling, I hope I got the English spelling of the others right. Afrodite and Apollon in Danish.

Mars was a god of Agriculture and war, fitting the life of the early Romans, who were farmers foremost, soldiers at need. His rites had more to do with agriculture than with war. In the prestigious college of flamines (priests of 15 gods) Flamen Martialis ranked second, behind only Jupiter’s priest, flamen Dialis.

Ares had no association with agriculture whatever. He was a god of plague, war and destruction, always a villain in the stories where he appeared.

It is really a bit strange that when the ancient Greeks and Romans felt a need to equate their gods, they chose Ares as the equivalent of Mars. Was the choice made by Romans or Greeks, I wonder?

          • SofiaT

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t by the Greeks!
They were quite… snobbish actually, when it came to their conquerors and considered all the copying the Romans did a sign of their inferiority, rather than a compliment.

What you describe of Mars is what I meant when I said that the characters of the gods changed in some instances, to fit the nations that worshiped them. The Greeks, for example, who valued cleverness and strategy more than raw strength, considered Ares to be a brute, not particularly bright; the equivalent of the idiot jock you see in American movies. The Romans obviously didn’t share that belief.

But the origin of both Ares and Mars is the same: he is the son of Juno (Hera), was born in Thrace and was a lover of Venus (Aphrodite). Even in Greek mythology there are versions of his origin where he was said to be born via parthenogenesis rather than being the son of Zeus (Hera did that a lot apparently -it was the only way to have her have kids that weren’t Zeus’ kids as well, without making her an adulteress. Virgin Mary is just a copy-cat).

          • Klaus

Mars took over the mythology of Ares when the two were indentified. But in origin they are two different gods.

          • SofiaT

You mean prior to the conquering of Greece by the Romans? Was he like Minerva who originally was Etruscan (i think)?

I’m only familiar with Roman mythology after it had already been merged with the Greek, so when I make comparisons it’s these two I’m comparing.

Actually, I know nothing about the Romans before the 3rd century BC… It’s like they popped out of the blue one day, they conquered us and sprang into existence. 😀

          • Klaus

Minerva was already very similar to Athena when the Romans got her from the Etruscans.

          • Terri Sutton

Why do I want to set upon Theoi.com?

          • SofiaT

            Huh. I didn’t know that was a thing… Wow.
I never check my mythology online, I guess I’d better peruse and see what it says.

is it like wikipedia, written by readers?

          • Terri Sutton

I’m not sure who is written by, but I know it’s a group of individuals.

Its more along the lines of wanting to hear you rant about them and the information they have. Or watch you laugh hysterically about the info they have. Both will be epic!

          • SofiaT

            Ugh, I’d rather not then.

I’ll feel obligated to write a long edit about everything I see wrong -and if they have something I’m not familiar with in it, I’ll be checking online all night trying to cross-reference and see if they got it right.

          • Terri Sutton

I have just got to ask. Is it true that Dionysus is the God of Cross-Dressers?

          • SofiaT

            Um… what??
Not that I know of. And I know plenty of myths about Dionysus, but none where he dresses as a woman.

            Where did this come from?

          • Terri Sutton

Three of the references on Thoei say that growing up Dionysus either posed or raised as a girl. Two of them mention avoiding the wrath of Hera.

            Does this sound familiar?

          • SofiaT

Oh God. My eyes. I went and checked it out.
All the references of that are Roman and there’s one by pseudo-Apollodorus. I rest my case!

According to the myths I know about him, Dionysus was raised by nymphs, as a boy, in Nysa. He could be described as effeminate, because his cult came from the East so it still carried a lot of eastern characteristics, but I’ve never found any myths of him cross-dressing.

          • Terri Sutton

Damn you Theoi! Damn you!!! I can’t believe I actually consulted that site for fanfics! (Granted it was Hercules/Xena fandom, so it was probably more accurate than anything else in those damn shows.)

          • SofiaT

Having watched episodes of both shows, I’ll agree with you.

I remember an episode where Gabrielle was “reciting” an incantation/poem to wake up some Titans (wtf?) and she kept saying “geia sou, kalispera, geia sou, kalinyxta”.

So she pretty much woke up the Titans by saying “hello, good evening, hello, good night”. Face, meet palm.

Also, Aphrodite was the daughter of Zeus and sister of Hercules according to the whole Xena-verse. When in truth she’s the most ancient of all Olympians. *sigh*

          • Terri Sutton

“Hello, good evening, hello, good night” isn’t that the translating of the incantation that Duncan did?

          • SofiaT

I have a feeling Alex is more imaginative than that!

He’s also such a perfectionist, I wouldn’t put it beyond him to create an actual demonic language just so Duncan can use a “real” spell for his ritual.

          • Terri Sutton

As someone who dabbled in wicca/witchcraft some of the “real” spells I came across sounded less intelligent than that.

          • Michael

As someone who is highly interested in constructed languages, I can say it’s easier than you’d think, but still takes a lot of time and effort. If Alex has done anything approaching a demonic conlang, I would be hugely fascinated to see some more of it.

          • Klaus
          • SofiaT

            LOL!

            Also, “Mytilenean maidens”?
Mytilene is another name for the island of Lesbos, so I guess that makes them Lesbian maidens?

        • Kate G

I know that. Every ancient civilization is, after all, influenced from other ancient civilizations. They aren’t isolated you know.

Plus, every god and goddess, in some way, morphs each time it is used over.

          • Kate G

But, like fairy tales, the basic characteristics are the same, as SofiaT says. That’s why they are grouped as the “same type” when you research their stories.

      • Tyler Griffin

Actually’ ruins of a fairly large city have been found in England that date to 11,000 years ago. Archeology continues to make her older and older.

  • karmakat

hello “miss ego” just got VOTED IN

  • SofiaT

Following the chronological progression of the memories, Sircea started as a human with magical powers (or something close to it), moved to being a champion that fought mythological beings (did she protect the people the dragon was attacking out of the goodness of her heart or did she expect payment, I wonder?) and finally was worshiped and feared as a goddess… Now she’s weak(er) and -by her own words- no longer immortal.

    So… she’s come full cycle?
I can see why that would irritate her. Even when playing Monopoly, going back to the start can be such a nuisance. Imagine losing all you’ve managed to achieve in 6,000 years of existence.

    • Terri Sutton

Can I throw my theory out there?

She is actually a demon who was summoned to Earth many many years ago (not quite 6,000 years ago). In her native realm she is the lowest on the totem pole, she is now stuck in her human form, she has become native (at least to her demon compatriots). On Earth Realm (I enjoy MK and I refuse to apologise) she is immortal, powerful, was worshipped as a Goddess.

If the walls were to fall, she will become mortal, lose her powers, come underneath of the rule of the beings she thought herself free of, and lose her human form (which she has become fond of). She will do anything to stop that from happening.

      • SofiaT

It’s a good one. (Except the becoming mortal part, by her admission she’s already mortal, most likely courtesy of the Grey Working).

It’s certainly possible and could explain her ability to communicate with Laampros without reaching his realm.

        • Terri Sutton

Oh right she did mention that she mortal. Did she also mention that she is losing her powers or did I dream that?

          • SofiaT

She said she’s been weakened. But I don’t know if that means she’s progressively losing more and more of her powers or if that ritual weakened her when it was performed, with the remaining powers staying unchanging since.

          • Terri Sutton

Okay thanks. I suppose that is a rather ambiguous statement.

    • BurstThrough

I don’t know how Alex defines her but her basis is deffinetly the greek witch demi-godess(or full fledged goddess) Circe, by the name she uses being similar and you can also see that the crown she uses has a pig on it(Circe’s greatest feat was being able to turn Odysseus’ men into pigs).I don’t know how Alex is portaying her and wich parts of the mith will have to be retold but I doubt she ever was just an ordinary mage.
Also she is overconfident enough to fully believe she’s going to achieve greatness but she never had to feel time hindering her efforts in achieving glory(as many people have aimed to reach immortality most failing even with demonic pacts, so I surely have doubts on how The Grey working dispelled that she was immortal in the first place).

      • SofiaT

It’s certainly possible that Alex has used Circe as a basis to create Sircea but I wouldn’t say it’s definitely her, not without a Word of God on it.

    • justkeepondriving

My two cents? We haven’t seen that much of Platinum Priestess the villian, but from what we’ve seen of Sircea and Duncan so far, it doesn’t seem like they’re all that evil. Sure, they may not be good guys, but they always do things for a reason. So, I was imagining that Sircea wouldn’t fight a dragon “out of the goodness of her heart”, or for a prize, but rather because she wanted to. Because it stood in the way of her grand plan, or because defeating it became part of her grand plan. [for world domination cough]. For her, it’s all about survival and power. And what good is power if you’ve got no-one to have power over?

  • Alt+F7

Ah, this is the back story I hoped for, really the only thing that could do her justice. She isn’t a hero, but she’s not really a villain either, she’s a force of nature.

    • Klaus

You could call her perilous, because she is so strong in herself. You, you could dash yourself to pieces on her, like a ship on a rock; or drown yourself like a hobbit in a river. But neither rock nor river would be to blame.

      • Alt+F7

Yes she has very strong Galadriel vibes in some of her scenes. Though, just that bit less perfect, just that little bit more tarnished and hardened from being on the front lines with no one standing beside her.

  • Nirgal

Considering the level of analysis most readers do, I think this idea might not be new, but… I’m gonna post it anyway.

    – PP already said that we need a huge amount of arcane power to seal the walls… far more than what she has.
    – Spooky said that if anything is gonna level the field in the battle is Kyle.
    – Kyle must have lots of untapped arcane power, or else Laampros would be a really lousy dad.

So… my bets are on Spooky using Kyle’s power to seal the walls before Laampros can reach the world during the ritual. And about PP and Annie… well, I foresee two scenarios. Either the deal has a caveat and they both end in the ugly side of the wall, or they manage to outgame Laampros and get their part to be considered fullfilled, so they walk away with immortality, perfect youth, and no one to answer to.

    Any thoughts?

    • SofiaT

Holy shit, I did not think of this before. Why did I not think of this before?!

Of course, it makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing it out!
Kyle must have more arcane power in him than Sircea can ever hope to access… Does that mean that Duncan and Sircea really do not know that he’s Laampros’ son? Even if they don’t suspect (or know, if we believe that Duncan heard what Laampros said to Kyle about him being his son), they obviously know at least that Kyle has demon blood in him. That must be what Sircea meant when she told Duncan that what he suspected was possible; and the whole reason he was used for the ritual in the first place.

So does the possibility of using Kyle’s powers to rebuilt the walls escape them, or is it the real reason Kyle was left in that warehouse unharmed and unrestrained… so that he could follow them and they’d be able to use him once more?

Hm. No, that doesn’t make much sense. If they believed that they could tap his power immediately, the whole “a few years” scenario till Sircea gathers enough power to built the walls again would be redundant.

Sorry if I don’t make much sense, I’m just talking to myself at the moment. But seriously, good point. It gave me lots of food for thought, looking forward to hear what the others have to say!

Also, you may want to verify your email address with Disqus, so you don’t need to have your comments approved by a moderator before they’re posted. 🙂

      • John

I suspect they don’t WANT to use Kyle as that would be an unreliable method. No garuntee he has enough power OR that he’ll be co-operative OR his power is compatible etc. etc.

I’m STILL intrigued at the idea that, at some level, Duncan is also a spell-caster. Can anyone use magic? Or is Duncan a magician who poured his gift into strengthening himself rather than manipulating the world around him?

I’m guessing he’s NOT otherwise the grey working would’ve affected him. But if so… so many possibilities here.

        • Nirgal

Maybe Sircea recruited him and taught him to do magic after the Grey Working happened?

Or maybe he is just a really low level magician. After all, what Sircea said was that the Grey working had killed or made insane “Everyone with TRUE knowledge of magic”.

          • John

This is true. The point that sticks in my mind is why would Sircea need Duncan for this ritual? Is HE a source of magic in and of himself? Why could Sircea do it without him, but require time to gather magic, if he’s NOT a source of magic?

    • Saxon_Brenton

In addition to everything that Sophia has said, my prurient mind informs reminds me that Red Hot’s fire abilities put out even more power than usual when he’s sexually stimulated, so that’s another factor to take into account if he’s going to be used as a magical power source. Furthermore, his fire powers have *already* been used to manipulate dimensional barriers (open up rather than seal up, but I’m wondering if there’s a magical correspondence that will make dimensional barrier manipulation easier for him).

And finally, *now* I’m kicking myself for not realising that magical rite that the Annihilator used on Red Hot to visit Laampros probably counts as tantric sex magic.

  • CH

“I am far too fierce for you Bullshit Duncan, and I don’t need you. So buck up and assist me or leave already.”
-(translation from monologue-ing villain to English is approximate and not legally binding)

    • Terri Sutton

I thought it was; “Me Goddess, you Human, I step on you like ant puny man”.

      • Michael

Reminds me of that brilliant line from The Avengers, “An ant has no quarrel with a boot.”

This does make me wonder, however, if Sircea is the only immortal or if there are others; and also how and why she survived with both magic and sanity when all other magic users (save for Spooky) are either dead or insane.

        • Terri Sutton

It kind of ties into my theory that she is actually a demon that has been stranded on Earth for a couple of millennia. Not human so doesn’t affect her.

          • SofiaT

You know what I’m thinking though?
If she’s a demon, why couldn’t they have used her to access Laampros’ realm, instead of Kyle who could or could have not have demon blood in him? They said they “suspected” he did, not that they knew for sure.

          • Terri Sutton

Just because she is a demon doesn’t mean that she is automatically from the same demon realm as Laampos, or that she wants to run the risk of going back.

          • SofiaT

True. Also, if she’s a demon, she obviously have different powers than those of Kyle.

Maybe she has the same origins as demons, but her powers evolved differently because she ended up being another species in the end? I mean, Demons and whatever Sircea is, could initially be the same kind of creature, like Balrog and Gandalf were initially both Maiar, but then because they followed different paths they ended up not only with different powers but also different appearance?

          • Klaus

That is one possibility. Another is that there are many kinds of demon, and they have different abilities and characteristics. Laampros is obviously closely associated with fire.

          • Michael

That’s a good point. Maybe she thought it was “beneath” her? Like, why would a queen do the work of a gatekeeper?

          • john Johnson

Maybe the BIG RED banished her? Hence the need to work through the intermediaries she mentioned?

          • silibub

She might be half-something like Kyle, a demigod of sorts born with magical powers and immortality until the Grey Working weakened her. And since her magical ability is innate and not acquired like a human’s, she’s still sane even after the ritual.

I’m probably wrong, but it’s an idea. And if she’s not half demon, but something else, then it would explain why she couldn’t just access the hell realm herself (unless that was initially the plan, but it changed when Duncan found out about Kyle.)

          • SofiaT

You know what still strikes me as weird?

On that Hong Kong date, where Sircea opened the gate for them, after Kyle passes through, she tells Duncan that what he suspected seems possible.

If she’s such a great sorceress, with this vast knowledge that 6,000 years of living will bring you, how come it was Duncan who discovered (or suspected) what Kyle was and how he could be used?

Does Duncan have arcane power/knowledge on his own?

Unless she’s the type that lets a man think he’s discovered the wheel, when in truth she’s the one nudging him to the right direction all along.

          • IamM

She’d have told him, over a lovely dim sum brunch no doubt, what she needed and how to identify likely prospects, like orphans with unexplained fire powers, and they’d have both been on the look out for candidate conduits, Kyle being one that Duncan identified.

          • Terri Sutton

            *squinty eyes*

You just don’t like the idea that your honeybunny’s bodacious bod isn’t her “real” body.

        • Klaus

Sircea is the only magician not considered mad because she os so powerful that none dare call her mad.

          • Michael

Of course! That makes so much sense.

        • john Johnson

She just as much as said she isnt human. Now, is that what she really looks like or merely what she chooses to look like so as not to scare the piss out of humans?

  • SofiaT

I’m very unfamiliar with native American mythologies.
All I know is that human sacrifices were allowed.

In Greek mythology that idea was abhorrent (once a priest of Dionysus suggested that they make a human sacrifice and the people killed him instead for even daring to propose it), which tells me that in comparison to the Olympians (who were no boy scouts to begin with) mesoamerican gods were quite cruel.

What does that tell us about Sircea? *gulps*

    • Saxon_Brenton

Depending on who Sircea corresponds to, it might speak highly of her. Once again, my meso-American mythology is “broad but shallow” – but I do know that Quetzalcoatl was worshipped mainly with sacrifice of flowers rather than of humans.

So look at this hypothetical: The Priestess sets her rule as a female version of what later becomes known as the male Quetzalcoatl. She has a firm but fair rule by the standards of the civilization at the time. Mess with her and she’ll destroy you. If an emergency comes up that requires human sacrifices to power a magical ritual, then she’ll sacrifice people without a qualm. But she doesn’t go out of her way to rule by fear and all other things being equal forgoes human sacrifices. (You can see why I’m taken with Silibub’s suggestion of Quetzalcoatl from below: even if it’s completely off-base, it adds an interesting light to Sircea’s theoretical politics.)

    • Nirgal

It’s more complicate than that. According to what I know, they believed that the gods had sacrificed themselves to bring the world into existence, and some of the sacrifices were believed to be necessary, for example, so the sun would keep on shining.

They literally believed the world would end without those sacrifices.

(Now, the Aztecs took these belief to extreme levels. Like the Chinese emperors who, instead of being buried with their favorite dog, were buried with their entire court)

      • SofiaT

        That’s fascinating!
…In a macabre kind of way.

  • The Platinum Priestess through the ages *___* Gorgeous, gorgeous pencils ♥

  • Nate

Oh yeah, she sounds like a trustworthy ally….

Also “You caught me monologuing!” 🙂

    • She must be Duncan’s own role model for monologuing. That or they’re related and there is such a thing as the evil supervillain monologuing gene.

  • john Johnson

The conversation about the panels is almost as interesting as the content. If I was doing the story line it would ay least give me ideas to ponder.

  • Kiri

Small point – if Sircea is already immortal why did she need immortality in the deal?

And oh yeah – she’s sane…..not. And oh yeah she really has the good of humanity in mind for this. Me thinks Duncan has way more integrity than she does. And considering how much he doesn’t have…. Circumstance makes strange bedfellows.

The pencils are completely gorgeous, btw.

    • IamM

She was immortal and more powerful before the grey working.

My guess is after the effort that went into building the walls between dimensions by super mages like Solomon, followed by a period of consolidation between relative upstarts like herself rushing to fill the resulting power vacuum, she was the most powerful magic user left which is why she survived the Grey work’s aftermath relatively well but still weakened and thus no longer immortal.

  • TwilightDreamer

    yeeeep, she’s totally power hungry…..
She and Duncan are definitely going to turn against each other before this is over….:s
    Brilliant page 😀 great detail.

  • bronakopdin

oh my talk about age… was she even born at some point or did she come to existence together with the universe?
Well I guess she must be born or else where did Alex get the baby snapshots 😀

this will be such an awesome coloured page! really looking forward here 😀

    • Klaus

Or maybe she has no beginning. She has always been, and so has the universe. She has already lived forever.

  • coasterbear

PLEASE leave the pencils up after you get the color. This is FANTASTIC art!

    • John

Seconded. Maybe in a seperate section in case you need to do it again?

    • 🙂 Thanks, Coasterbear!

    • Klaus

You could save it to your own disk.

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Sircea cares only about herself and what she wants. So why is she being so nice to Duncan? She thinks of herself as a goddess and humans as pawns. Why is she going through all the trouble of explaining everything to him? Why is she being so patient with him?

Does she still need him? If she does it must be really important for her to go through all that trouble.

I can see that she might not have been able to cast a spell on him and control him that way before he made the deal with Laampros. She might have needed him to make the deal of his own free will. It might not have worked if he was under her spell.

He even tells her on the previous page that she could force him to stay (not walk away), and that’s when she looses it and tells him the part about “blaming the old witch”. Why is it important to her what he thinks? Why is it important to her that they both share the blame? Why does she cares what he or anybody thinks?

    • DoktorNauk

I took this as “I don’t need to force you to stay because I don’t need you.” I think she wants him to survive with her but wanted to remind him that.

    • Mathew Cole

She pointed it out herself; She -can- do this on her own…given time, given unpleasantness.

If she wants to do it the easy way, the “nice” way, she needs his co-operation. Not to mention that she might have genuinely developed some sort of affection for him as well.

      • John

There could also be a Palpatine/Vader relationship going on here. Duncan is handy to keep pesky distractions away she’d rather not deal with herself, as well as allowing her to move unseen in the background while he attracts all the notice.

    • I wonder this too…unless Duncan’s invulnerability is required-

still, if I were he, I’d definitely have the feeling of “Maybe I’m just a hyena to this lion”

  • Frater Gymnos

its quite a treat to see the pencils for a change. thanks, alex.

  • purplefoxglove

Well…I guess she does not suffer from low self-esteem.

    • Klaus

She has an undercompensated superiority complex.

      • purplefoxglove

Her psychiatrist must be so happy that she’s facing it 😉 Although having her try to take over the world was probably not what the poor doctor had in mind…

  • stickfigurefairytales

She mentioned before (page 51 & 53) that the Grey Working removed her immortality and reduced her powers.

    • Yael G.

      Ah, thank you!

      • Hi Yarl! Just wanted to let you know that if you verify you email with Disqus your comments will post right away instead of going into moderation. 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        No problem! 🙂

  • Keys2tkingdom

Yeah I can see this ending well for Sircea. I mean everyone knows that once you declare that you will be a god you get defeated in the end.

  • Tuolu

I still claim Sircea as my favourite character by far. How can she not be? I still also claim her time will come to an end soon.

    • John

Nah, I think she’s going to be a persistant bad guy. Maybe in a spin-off Spooky comic (hint hint!) she’d be defeated ‘once and for all’ but she’s WAY too good a character to off this quickly.

      • Tuolu

I very much hope you are correct. 😀 I just have a bad feeling about her well-being. Maybe she’ll end up “Voldemort’ed” and being reduced into hiding, haha.

        • John

Possible, but I think she’s (still) more practical than arrogant. I suspect she’ll simply use her super-duper-mega-ultra-getoutofherrightnow power in a pinch.

  • John

    OK:
    Megalomania? Check
    Unlimited Power? Check
    Evil Plot? Check
    Powerful henchman? Check
Said henchman at risk from his heart? Check

You a star wars fan Alex? 😛

Though in all seriousness PP is really endearing herself to me here. She is epic in every sense. I could imagine this is what Galadries would be like if she picked up the One Ring.

“Beautiful and terrible as the Sea! Stronger than the Foundations of The Earth! All shall love me and despair!”

Yeah, yeah, yeah. In Texas we have a saying (during the summer): If I owned Texas and Hell, I’d rent out Texas and live in Hell. Frankly, you’ve just tipped your hand, hon. You want to be a ‘Goddess’. Let me just venture a guess that you’d be a jealous deity who suffers no others.

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

I love Sircea. She is such an amazing Meglomaniac babe. XD But we know things can’t go well for her, otherwise she’d be the protagonist.

  • SKB

Interesting to see the pencils for a change for me. This is the first time I’ve seen them.

As someone who draws and paints a lot of horses, the horse Sircea is riding on in center-left frame looks a bit odd, which sadly is all too common in comic book art. The legs of horses are notoriously tricky to draw well, and learning the underlying skeletal structure is absolutely invaluable in learning how to draw them, thanks to the low amount of flesh that covers them. The neck is tricky to draw at the angle in this picture too, but the basic thing to remember when drawing it is that like humans, a horse can only tuck its chin so far before its throat gets in the way. I’m not really sure how to explain how better to draw it without drawing it myself, but Adam, if you’re interested in learning to draw better horses, I’m willing to chat about it at length.

  • Inuhime

Hmmm, and with that I know things are going to go worse before they get better. That type of speech from a baddie is never followed by something good. XD” At least she’s got the ego down packed.

  • Kanaid Black

I don’t have too much knowledge in aztec mythology, but I’m pretty sure that Cirsea was the godness Cihuacóatl or Mictecacíhuatl.

  • TheManBehindTheCurtain

She ruled all these places over time and yet they all failed/died out.

Not exactly a resume you should be proud of darling, rather it shows amazing incompetence to keep blowing it time after time.

I guess some people never learn. And she would probably blame those she ruled for each civilization’s fall, not herself of course.

PP just went from competent seeming villaness to to an incompetent self blinded looser (dangerous, but still a looser). Maybe she’s been suffering from the magic user madness curse too, it’s just not as immediatly obvious but a slow decline.

    • Garnasha

Incompetent or indifferent? Why should she care if her minions fail, so long as she has a different set of minions handy? She might even be involved in the toppling of some of the empires she ruled, thereafter ruling the “winners”.

    • Seconding Garnasha here. Boredom causes more mischief than anything, and if she’s tired of her old trappings, why not get a whole new wardrobe and minions to boot? Maybe she thrives on the challenge. And power is useless unless you use it (a motto she seems to be following)

    • Perhaps she destroyed them all on purpose, sacrificing them to increase her (magical) power somehow?
Sometimes taking over the world is not the ultimate goal but merely a stepping stone to something else.

  • SofiaT

Sircea reminds me of Raquel Welsh in One Million Years BC, in that first memory.

@silibub:disqus, what do you think? http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2010/gallery/061110-Raquel-Welch-400.jpg

    • silibub

There’s definitely a resemblance! Although I think Sircea has a better chance of moving around in hers without, uh, falling out of it.

  • Adam Irving

I’m really happy about the dialogue that makes up this chapter, in that we get to explore PP a lot more. She was perhaps the one character we were really lacking much if any experience with before, so it’s nice to have her story tied in with the larger hellish plan at hand. Nicely plotted (and nicely drawn)!

  • Derkins

Somehow the thought of her finding an alternative path to immortality sounds more frightening than what they were already up to… maybe it’s just the way she put it … >.>

  • BurstThrough

Someone is confident though as someone I doubt ever felt aging’s hindering effects I doubt she could achieve it in the time she has left.

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

She might be aging slowly. If she’s not human her aging process might be different.

  • Twirls

Wait, if she’s so old why is she white?

    • Becky

The way that she refers to “your kind”, I’m assuming she isn’t human. Also, some scientists have estimated that the mutation for light skin could have cropped up as early as 100,000 years ago, well before anything we would call human civilization really began.

  • SofiaT

I showed this page to a friend who’s come over for lunch.
I explained to her the whole process of Alex writing the story, Adam doing the pencils and Veronica doing the coloring and how normally there’s another stage in between but it’s skipped here because Adam is so good.

Then we just stared at the page for a while, like we were in a museum.
You don’t realise how clean the lines are when the colors are there already.

    Great work, Adam.
And thanks for having internet problems, Veronica! 😀

  • Becky

I’m curious why Sircea calls herself “the Platinum Priestess”. If she thinks of herself as a goddess, wouldn’t she consider it demeaning to be known as a mere servant of the gods?

    • bobbyjoeguy

Maybe it’s just what everyone else calls her even though she hates it and that’s why she’s so grumpy all the time and wants to rule the world.

    • Klaus

A stealth name. Wouldn’t dp to tip your hand, would it?

    • I think she’s changed name several time throughout history. For example ‘platinum’ Has only been known for a century or two.

  • silibub

She’s a blonde! Blonde blonde blonde — I like, although I’ll always love her silver hair. It also looks like her present-day cape has the same trim as her goddess robes, as if we need more confirmation that her expectations for the ritual are high.

There’s a really nice sense of continuity throughout the ages through her color scheme, which is terrific! I guess she went with the platinum bikini this time around to blend in with everyone else’s flashy costumes, since even the more “basic” ensembles still have this sense of pageantry about them. Anyway, the imagery all ties together very nicely. I’m so impressed with the art on this update — Adam and Vero really went above and beyond and I love them for it. Drinks and back-pats all around!

    • SofiaT

I got your comment email notification or I wouldn’t know the coloured version is up yet. Thanks!

I had a feeling she was a blonde. I wonder if sge gave herself her Platinum name after she started aging.
She also has a staff in all her memories, is it the version of a wand, I wonder?

And, lastly, seeing the thousands of people kneeling in front of her at that last memory, I feel that I must say…
…”in the end, you will always kneel”.

      • silibub

I wasn’t actually trying to stalk the page, but hey, whatever helps!

I would have bet on blonde, too, but it’s pretty cool to see it confirmed. I also wonder if she’s been aging this whole time (very, very slowly) or if the Grey Working set that in motion — and if so, how recently did that happen? It seems like she should be more concerned about the limited amount of time she has left if she can age and die naturally now, yet she’s confident that she’d figure out a way. Brash, or does she have a backup plan or twelve in case this immortality deal doesn’t pan out? You can never tell with these god complexes.

LOL, I wonder what she’d make of Loki. I’d rather see her smack him around than Duncan.

        • SofiaT

Judging by the clothes of those who did the Gray Working, I’d say sometime in the ’70s?

          • silibub

            Retro robes?

          • SofiaT

            Retro hair!

    • Terri Sutton

So her fur bikini, what do you think? Did she kill a silver hind or did she have a few white rabbits skinned to make it?

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Platinum blonde from the looks of it. 😉

  • Sapfo

So that is what happened to Ayla after “The Land of Painted Caves”.
I find @silibub:disqus comments so endearing. You go get your blond godess.

    • silibub

Sorry ladies, the bar’s been set pretty high.

      • Sapfo

Oh darn it. I am so out of the running, me being just a godess, but not a blond one. Sorry! 😉

        • silibub

Maybe I should cross “sorceress” off my checklist of preferred attributes — it really narrows the field.

          • Terri Sutton

I thought that being able to wear a metal bikini would utterly narrow the field.

  • Oh that is a beautiful thing. The color is fantabulous!

And now you can truly see her ruthlessness, her utter belief in her divinity. They will bow down before her.

  • Evoru

No one can fault her strong work ethic!

  • Klaus

What next? Does Spooky’s visual inspection mean that we get to meet one or more of the other sorcerors? Those PP considers dangerously insane?

  • Sunseahl Silverfall

and when that time comes the Platinum Priestess will shed her modest, villainous name and adorn herself in the mantle set before her by destiny itself….

Queen of the Universe… at least until some big bad space Kukulkan bottles her in a cage of her own dreams….

  • TwilightDreamer

    looks brilliant!
:)….things are not going to go well for in the end…sooner or later…

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

I notice that the moai are more or less toppled / sunken, and lack ahu (bases) and crowns / headpieces. This suggests a date sometime in the 17th or 18th century. And are those Rapanui? If so, they would have to be wearing demon skulls, because there were no other animals around that large. For Sircea’s pelts, I suppose they could be rats, if she did not simply teleport in some other animal by magic.

The pyramid looks like Chichen Itza in the Yucatan, and that scene would have to be pre-Columbian. So the scenes are out of order (ignoring the issue of the dragon). Note the apparent lack of stirrups on the horseback scene.

    • Vik-Thor

(I’m not quite sure it IS a horse she is riding. Something about the head looks off… )

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

It should have been an MLP.

    • krissdevalnor

🙂 its possible to ride without stirrups – difficult and weird in a war situation – but very possible.

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

My point is that stirrups didn’t reach Europe until the Middle Ages, so this helps to date the scene depicted.

  • Justin

Woah. This page! It’s the first time that PP’s motives were so plainly laid out…

  • Klaus

She has outlived every cicilization created by man? Then who created the current cicilizations? Or does she consider modern humans uncivilized?

  • Pikinanou

“If the walls between Hell and Earth are torn to shred, not only will I survive it,but I’ll rise to power again!”
So, she’s basically saying: I’m doing you bunch a favor by trying to repair those walls, so don’t start bitchin’ my methods, Darling.

    • Jose O. Gonzalez Lopez

But is she fixes them she wont rise to power. And she wants power. So I think shes lying. She is a villain after all. For all we know that thing shes building is just some school project her kid had to do.

      • Klaus

She will, and faster. That is what she says, anyway.

  • Nice to see her sense of fashion has never failed her either

  • Jose O. Gonzalez Lopez

GUYS LOOK EVERYTIME SHE HAD POWER SHE HAD SOME SORT OF STICK IN HER HAND!!!! LOOKS LIKE SES POWERLESS NOW!!!!! Please interpret however you wish

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

She still has one, she has a metal staff. You can see it in Chapter One.

      • Jose O. Gonzalez Lopez

        We are doomed then.

  • Wow! And the colors are stunning *___*
On the heels of the shocking revelation that Duncan used to have really dark hair comes another one: The Platinum Priestess used to be less platinum.

  • Thanatopia

It’s great to see some more awesome world-building! LOVE the insight into the Priestess’s character. One has to wonder what, exactly, she is? A human who gained knowledge beyond mortal ken? A non-human humanoid? Perhaps an abomination from Beyond merely confined (by nature or by choice?) to a humanoid shape? Or maybe just a lady with magical powers and a god complex?

Either way, awesome page! Questions answered, MORE questions raised!!

  • What if Sircea’s immortality came from being reborn over and over always keeping her knowledge and power wirh each life time allowing her to then grow stronger each time?

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I think she’s a demon or part demon and that’s why she can absorb arcane energy. Kyle grew stronger in hell because he was absorbing the energy there and he is part demon. Could someone who wasn’t a demon or part demon do that?

      • It’s always possible that a non-demon could do that if they learned some form of absorption magic. Edit: Or there could just be those out there that have a natural tendency to absorb power

        • SofiaT

I know it’s a bit irrelevant at the moment, but we still don’t know what kind of creature Kyle’s mother was.

I like the idea of her being whatever Sircea is.
So, since the idea of Kyle’s mom being an angel has been mentioned before, how about Sircea being a fallen angel? (Which could or could not equate with her being a demon, depending of the mythology of this universe).

          • This is true. And could work.

Sircea could be like Duncan McLeod of the Clan McLeod. Or used to be where to actually die was to have their heads cut off. In that mythology, most of the old old ones went crazy. And there could be only one. Explains quite a lot really. 😛

  • fujoshifanatic

Woah, another awesomely rendered page! I couldn’t believe how great it looked even when just the pencil was up! When this volume comes out in print, the double-page spreads will be truly stunning. Like everyone said, the little bit of information that we get about Sircea here raises even more questions, namely:

    1. Just what is she? Fallen angel? Minor goddess? Wayward alien? Or a human who was blessed with the suck of immortality?
    2. I noticed throughout much of her history that she was a sexy blonde (read, younger-looking) badass. Was it the recent space-time conflagration thingy that caused her to start going gray? Or is that the natural progression of her 6,000+ year lifespan?
    3. She seems pretty confident in her ability to find her place in the world, no matter who’s in charge, Has she tangled/dealt with/partnered with the demon world before? Or maybe she is part demon like Kyle? How interesting that would be…

Don’t know if I’ll get all these questions answered, but I thought I’d put it out there to see if some Word of God might happen (hint, hint) 😛

    • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

If she is a natural blonde, as opposed to demonic blonde or flashback-blonde, then this (along with her cranial structure etc.) pretty much rules out her being native to Easter Island or Central America.

  • mogoskier

Hmm..Does she have blonder hair color because of youth or sepia filter flashback.

    • OnyxLight

I was wondering the same thing… maybe she bleaches it now or it’s the result of magic… not sure

  • Mae

    Sheer awesome.

  • Phyre Storm

I think you may have annoyed her, Big D.

  • kireb

And now her deepest secret it reviled 😮
SHE USED TO BE SHE-RA THE PRINCESS OF POWER! :O

    • mogoskier

      Does that make Duncan He-man?

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

        This would explain so much.

      • SofiaT

I will never be able to take the image of Duncan in a blonde, bob wig, off my mind now.

        • Don’t forget the fur loin cloth and almost noting else.

          • SofiaT

I can deal with that. >:D

          • I figured as much. I know that’ bob hair of He-Man is what usually drew the eye, but once a body could tear their eyes away from such bad fashion sense… 😀

        • Jac

          HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA

          • Mildee

AND SO I WAKE UP IN THE MORNIN’ AND I STEP OUTSIDE

AND I TAKE A DEEP BREATH

AND I GET REAL HIGH AND I SCREAM AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS,

            “WHAT’S GOIN ON?!?”

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Maybe the name “Grey Working” refer’s to PP’s hair color.

    • Jac

She really is Working that Grey.

  • Saxon_Brenton

We still don’t know when the Grey Working took place or was supposed to achieve, do we? Hmmm…

Revisiting an old theory: Back in mid August I threw out the idea that maybe the Grey Working was an attempt by government black ops to do a magic ritual to limit the amount of arcane power available in the environment, and then something went wrong. Now we have indications that Sircea has occasionally wrested control of various parts of the world. So, continuing on with that idea, what if the government black ops were worried – rightly or wrongly – that she was intending another power grab at some time in the near future and the Grey Working was specifically an attempt to neutraliser *her*, both her personal magical power and hence her ability to control politics?

Okay, that’s still pretty wacky. Just trying to fit together the jigsaw puzzle pieces. Further semi-random ideas in the next post…

    • SofiaT

The floating man is wearing trousers that look like jeans and that woman with the dagger has an afro. So I’d say sometime this century, maybe the 70s-early 80s? http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-51/

(When I say “this” century, I obviously mean the 20th. Because in my mind the 90s were 10 years ago *sigh*)

      • Saxon_Brenton

I agree that the fashions involved in those affected by the Grey Working look plausibly modern. Personally I like to think that those people are the ones being driven insane at the time that the Grey Working took effect. That said, I recognise that they may be symbolic representations of people driven to madness long afterwards.

This is actually the same problem with my speculations in my next post, above. In the panel showing the Grey Working

that guys in the bottom left has a goatee beard that looks appropriate for a private citizen New Ager circa late 60s/early 70s – but most definately isn’t military regulation for a government operation. There’s either not enough info, or conflicting info, to support an exact timeframe. All we can do is speculate…

        • Justin McKinney

Possible he’s got permission from his SO to keep it to a certain length. Doesn’t look more than half an inch long.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Further fevered fan speculation. Back on chap.3 page.49 the Platinum Priestess accuses the people behind the Grey Working of being “children grasping after power they couldn’t even begin to understand.” I have a couple of different interpretantions as to what that could mean. The first and most obvious is that as private individuals trying to gain personal magical power. The other is that representatives of a government/military group trying to increase the resources in their arsenal.

At the start of the .pdf for volume 1 that Alex sent out for final editorial perusal and fan feedback, there’s a journal article called’ Rise Of The Supervillians’, which gives some worldbuilding background for the Young Protectors setting and indicates that “The U.S. government had known about the existence of extraordinary people since the late-1960s and had been quietly recruiting those they discovered for use in the military and intelligence agencies.” but that public superhero teams had been formed only as media-friendly counter to the public appearance of supervillains in 1973. Let us suppose that this was an attempt by one government agency or another to harness magical power – in a manner similar to Real Life attempts during the Cold War to harness psychic powers. Maybe they were trying to empower specific agents, or maybe they were simply experimenting. Either way, the attempts to call up power went badly awry and the dimensional walls started collapsing.

Running off on even more of a tangent: further thought is that this dimensional wall collapse could have paradoxically led to the increase in magical power in the environment and the rise of the superhumans. This would be a situation something like in the Champions superhero roleplaying game setting, where the Wewelsburg working in world war 2 unleashed magic and the modern superhuman age, because even the superhumans apparently using the most rigorous superscience are nevertheless unwittingly taking advantage of the fact that the laws of physics have been weakened by the increase in magic. If this is the case in the YP setting, then it would tie-in with the Priestess’ assertion of driving all people with “true knowledge of magic dangerously insane” (chap.3 p.51). It would dreadfully ironic, in that the collapse of dimensional walls and the subsequent creation of superhumans is *at the same time* is sending insane the peoples with the best knowledge to recognise the danger of what’s happening and how to fix it. Or maybe not so ironic: maybe this was started as a subtle demonic plot to gain the Earth (“Paradise” to them), or even regain Earth if the hints about the dimensional barriers (“the walls of pain and blood”) are artificial in the first place.

Okay, that’s my prattling tapped out for today.

  • Dennis Grace

Well, shit, Sirc’. Is that all you want? No problem. And here I was worried you might be having delusions of grandeur.

    • Mathew Cole

Is it a “delusion” if she -was- once a goddess? Immortality, nigh-unkillability, vast magical power and a devoted set of followers – she certainly seems to have once filled the bill.

      • Dennis Grace

She was a ruler, that doesn’t make her a goddess. She’s said she’s not immortal. Lastly, what devoured followers? Terrified minions, perhaps… Anyway, to answer your question, just the fact that she led terrified and seemingly ignorant peoples in times past doesn’t mean she’s qualified to lead 21st Century peoples.

        • Terri Sutton

I don’t think even a real god is qualified to lead 21st century people.

          • Dennis Grace

Yeah. I think I’d rather herd cats.

        • Mathew Cole

She’s not immortal anymore. She did say that immortality was something she’d once had, that this “Grey Working” robbed her of it, along with a sizeable portion of her magical power.

As for being qualified? No, she almost certainly isn’t. But (a) that’s no evidence of delusions of grandeur – if this ritual pans out, she *will* have the power to reach for it again, and (b) Neither are between half and 90% of today’s “leaders” qualified for their offices.

          • Klaus

How does she know that she is not immortal? How does she know that she ever was?

  • Jac

Remember that time when Duncan was all “I am not a man who has regrets”

    *laughing so much*

  • Shinashi

So, basically, she knows she doesn’t HAVE to save the world, because everything’s going to go well for her in the end, so you better be happy!

  • Oh look: it’s an elegant and finely-crafted link!

    TRiG.

  • JMS

I’m hoping that she’s only appearing as a blonde white woman in all the flashbacks because that’s how she chooses to appear now. Not that she’s always been white and blonde, even through hominid history that didn’t include white people or blondes.

    • SofiaT

      But she’s 6,000 years old, not 60,000.
I’m sure there were blonde, white people around at 4,000BC?

      • JMS

If she’s outlived every civilization created by man, how can she only be 6000 years old?

        • SofiaT

Outlived is not the same as predated. Not even close.

    • Sherri

She’s ‘only’ 6,000 years old. Both of those things existed then.

Blond hair popped up around 11,000 years ago. White skin 6,000-20,000 years ago.

      • JMS

That’s not my point. My point is that having a blonde white chick appearing as a “goddess” for the dark-skinned people is cliche and disappointing in a comic that tries for more diversity than mainstream comics.

        • Sherri

That wasn’t you’re point (it may have been what you intended, but not at ALL what you wrote), and it’s not cliche in this instance, but historically accurate. She’s being worshiped by either Aztecs or Mayans. Remember how the Aztecs responded to the first white people they actually encountered? They thought they were gods/sent by the gods.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Hi! Anybody here yet?

    • SofiaT

I’m around -but I’m at work, can’t camp much.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Glad to see you anyway!

        • SofiaT

          Thank you!
It’s my nameday today and colleagues are taking me out to lunch, so I won’t even be around much on my lunch break. :0/

          • Happy Nameday!

          • SofiaT

            Thank you, Doki!

          • Had to Google it. Cool tradition! Happy Nameday!

          • SofiaT

            Thank you!
Back home it’s as big as a birthday but not in Australia.
So it’s quite cool of my colleagues to make a big deal out of it for me, when for them it’s never been a thing.

          • That’s pretty awesome! I found a site that tells when a nameday is. I may have to adopt this in my writing. 🙂

          • SofiaT

*thumbs up* Let me know if you need any help with that.
Today is a day for celebration for anyone named after one of the four virtues:
Sophia (wisdom), Agape (love), Piste (faith) or Elpida (hope).

          • silibub

How common are the other three names?

          • SofiaT

Elpida (hope) is the second most common after Sophia. Agape (love) is also not unheard of, although not a very common one. I’ve never met anyone named Piste (faith).

          • silibub

I think Elpida’s a really pretty name, although I’ve never met anyone in the States with it. I have met a few Sophias, though!

          • SofiaT

I agree, Elpida is one of my favorites as well, both for its meaning and the way it sounds. I’m quite fond of my own too 😀

My elder sister’s name is Anastasia (Resurrection) and I find it a bit “heavy”. We call her Natasa or Nat.

          • silibub

Once you hit four syllables, your name’s definitely in the lengthy category, although Anastasia’s a lovely name. I hope 50 Shades didn’t ruin it for her.

          • SofiaT

I doubt she even knows what 50 Shades is.
            Lucky Nat.

          • silibub

            Bless!

          • How would Elpida be pronounced?

          • SofiaT

El-peé-tha (the “th” sounds like it does in “this”)

          • That’s so beautiful!

          • SofiaT

            Yep 🙂

          • If I used it, but spelled it more as it sounded would it changed the meaning?

          • SofiaT

A lot of Greek names can be transliterated in different ways into English. I transliterated letter for letter, the way it’s spelled in Greek.

What did you have in mind?

          • Elpétha or something like that

          • SofiaT

            That should be fine!

          • Cool! And since it already has a meaning I don’t have to search for one. 🙂

          • Will do!

The site I found said my Nameday would be on Dec. 30th. 🙂

          • Steven K.

What do they do if someone has a very, let’s say, unusual, name (e.g., Shaniqua or Hengist or Rumplestiltzkin)?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Happy Nameday, and have a great lunch!

          • SofiaT

            Thanks, sticki!

          • silibub

Happy Nameday Sofia — have fun at lunch!

          • SofiaT

            Thank you, lovely!

          • Happy late nameday wishes, Sofia! 🙂

          • SofiaT

            Thanks, Alex!
Guess what, I got a great page as a gift for my nameday too. 😉

    • Shhhhh! we are all sleeping!

      • stickfigurefairytales

Oh, sorry! *whispers* How are you?

        • ……catching up on tumblr…..

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Me too!

    • Working on getting free. 🙂 How’s it going Stick?

      • stickfigurefairytales

Pretty good. Hee hee, my first reaction to that “working on getting free” was to go, “Wait, I thought the new episode wasn’t airing until tomorrow.” I…may have that anime too much on my mind at the moment.

        • Who doesn’t? RinHaru in Australia!!

        • Ahh. Nope, just trying to get free enough to sit down and devote my time to TYP. 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

That’s what I figured you actually meant. 😀

          • Heh! Of course. 😀

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Lurking about.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hi Saxon!

    • *glares at iCloud*

  • Normally I would say ‘Camping’, but I woke up with the potential of a nasty headache so I’m going back to bed. I’ll be back in about an hour and either camp along with you or to comment on the new page.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon, Danish!

    • Feel better!

    • Take care, Danish! *wishes headache away* hold the fleshy part between your thumbs really hard too, it helps with mine!

    • ….Danish, I didn’t do it! Seriously, I still have my headache, so it wasn’t me!

    • silibub

Sorry about your head! Rest well!

    • Did yours suddenly start hurting less? Because mine just started hurting more…

    • Sapfo

      Poor Danish head. Take care

  • davefragments

Hey. I almost forgot tonight was new page night.
    How’s it all going. . .

    • Well, we were all sleeping peacefully until someone *glares at stickfigurefairytales* woke us up…

    • silibub

      Hey, Dave!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Pretty good. How are you, Dave?

      • davefragments

Good tonight. It was haircut day.

        • stickfigurefairytales

So then I take it you like your new haircut?

          • davefragments

Yes, my ears are free of ticking hair. Drives me crazy.

    • At least you remembered in time! 🙂

  • Sapfo

    Hello good people!

            I love it, starr!

          • Fantastic first post, Starr. I may leave it to you to ruminate about our YCon experiences or do a bit of supplementing (mostly with more excellent pictures of near naked men).

          • Cosplay post will just be pictures, but panel posts for Alex and Em are all yours. Also have to do a Reika summary, and sight-seeing summary (beach…) 😉

            First artist post: http://starrwinter.tumblr.com/post/97705765793/ycon-2k14-artists-art-post

    • silibub

      Hi Sapfo!

      • Sapfo

have you recovered from this page yet?

        • silibub

Never. I’m considering setting it as my desktop background, except I’d never get anything done.

    • Yay for blanket forts!

      • Sapfo

        Welcome in!

        • Woo Hoo! *plops down in blanket fort*

        • stickfigurefairytales

  • stickfigurefairytales

Anybody want to play a game while we’re waiting? I was thinking we could try one based on “I Spy” where we go around and name something we can see that starts with a certain letter of the alphabet, starting with A and continuing all the way to Z if we get that far.

    I’ll start us off – A is for Anteater (it’s a sticker)

            Taconite. Isn’t that stuff disgusting!

          • Steven K.

I had some of that that sort of looked like little rabbit-droppings.

          • davefragments

            yep, that’s it.
Worst stuff I ever even saw and smelled a half building away was TAR SANDS. . . I could live with coal tars and pot liquids and the Burning Animal Waste Conference was just fun but TAR SANDS – – – unbelievably ugly crap.

          • Steven K.

And that’s the stuff they want to start processing more of and bring down here from Canada in that Keystone pipeline.

          • davefragments

            That is the stuff.
We used to get all the heteroatom stuff out in a light cut after the primary conversion changed the coal to oils and asphalts. That smelled like oils and hydrocarbons. However Tar Sands made my skin crawl. Leave it in the ground, people. Leave it in the ground.

          • Steven K.

            Ullmannite and Vanadinite, btw.

Yep, from all I’ve heard and seen of the stuff, it is particularly nasty all-round.

          • Steven K.

(I had 16 weeks of mineralogy 5 days a week at 8 in the morning – though basically one big course on crystal chemistry.)

          • davefragments

fun stuff. I had my training on-the-job.

          • Steven K.

My undergrad degree was in geological science with an additional major in anthropology.

          • davefragments

I worked for Dept of Energy doing high pressure hydrogenation and liquefaction of coal. I know my macerals and had my hands on most varieties of US coal. I have a wall full or rocks and minerals that I collected over the years. Pretty things when they aren’t polluting us.

          • Steven K.

Taking igneous and metamorphic petrology was a doosey – all kinds of charts classifying rocks based on percentages of quartz and mafic minerals and different varieties of feldspars – doing this with hand samples and also thin sections using the petrographic microscope.

          • davefragments

That’s all these stuff we used to clean out of coal before we burnt it. My “prize” piece of coal is a price with the 1/2 inch signature of vitrinite in it that I picked up with my own fingers from the Pittsburgh Seam.

          • Steven K.

Granite, Diorite, Tonalite, Syenite, Monzonite, Gabbro, Foids, etc.

          • davefragments

            good one!

          • davefragments

            Can I do more:
Q is for Quartz (he said with a stone face – Rose quartz, clear needle crystals, cubic and cloudy quarts.

R – Realgar and it’s cousin Orpiment – a red and yellow set of relatives who you don’t kiss, kiss, hug, hug, because they are oxides or arsenic.

          • M is also for manga, as in the big pile I brought back from the Con 🙂

          • Sapfo

M as in meltdown. My computer and I are having a fight right now. I sending it for a timeout. Bad computer 🙁

          • D:
            Nooooo!

          • *hands ove chest* My Heart!

          • Saxon_Brenton

I will throw in: I is for Ink-jet printers.
And now I must leave to head home. I’ll see you in an hour or so.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            See you later, Saxon!

          • Sapfo

            Be safe!

    • *coughs politely* I just have a couple of corrections for this alphabet game of yours Stick.

      F is for Flyboy

      and

      M is for Mitch

      • Speaking of Mitch… I have something Mitch related to mail to you…. needs to message you 😉

        • mmmm Mitch ^_^

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Ooh, Mitch mail!

    • Danny

      T is for Takei.

  • Wondering if we can get that donation bar over $400 before the update tonight too (helped out a bit) 😉

    • D is for Donation and Ding! Ding! Where I throw down the last Ben Franklin for a new page!

      • Woohoo! Tag team for the win! XD

      • Sapfo

        A strawberry for you!

        • Strawberries for Sapfo…just you wait 😉

          • Sapfo

You scare me, in the best way

      • Yay for G!

  • Hey all, managed to make it to camp. If you haven’t already, check out @starrwinter:disqus’s wonderful first post on Tumblr about our Yaoi-Con 2014 weekend! http://starrwinter.tumblr.com/post/97705765793/ycon-2k14-artists-art-post

    • Sapfo

I saw and I really did enjoy the weekend with you through twitter. Thank you for sharing it all. (you even made me miss Hamlets little doddles ;D)

    • *melts into a floor puddle* Thanks for the re-post @alexwoolfson:disqus !!! XD

      • Wooooo HOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

        • But Starr, I was also just thinking you should have taken a picture with the Spacejinks girls. I wonder why neither of us thought about it. *feels sad*

          • Always another Con right? I think it was the excitement and HQ!! talk 😉

          • I think so. *nods*

            Yep, another Con for sure!

  • EMR has updated! http://elanmeetsrafa.com/the-comic/ch22pg3/
If things don’t work with out with Rafa….I think Scott would do quite well with Elan….

    • kuku

but Rafa would be heartbroken! And who would get custody of Murakami?

  • silibub

So this is impressive and everything, but what if on the next page Duncan’s just like, “You’ve given me this speech at least twenty times already, I get it.”

  • Sapfo

Oki, computer down, and camping on the phone is kind of hard. I wish you all a good camping. May the best avatar take the V!

    • Oh no! *bad computer* hits!

    • ;-; BAD COMPUTER! You be nice to Sapfo!

    • But you’re still with us 🙂 Good phone.

      • Sapfo

Computer is out of the corner now. It only took forever for it to behave again.

        • What are you doing to iit? It behaved well for me, or was that another computer?

          • Sapfo

I think it is some new things I done to it, that it does not like. I think I need to reprogram it or something.

          • Boo! My computer has also worked a bit weird after some recent updates. Since I don’t know which, and I’m not a techy, I have no clue how to possibly fix. At least it’s just a minor thing or two that I can live with.

          • Sapfo

            I think I know what it was I did to it. But I kind of want to keep that thing ;_;
Well I will fix it somehow

    • stickfigurefairytales

Oh no! I hope your computer gets back in working order soon!

    • Boo!

  • Back. Barely got to doze off, but relaxing on the couch helped some. Maybe I can get an hour or two more of Z’s after page is up. Depends on how noisy the construction sounds will be this morning. They have already stirred *glares evily at the window*

    • My headache is a lot less now, but my eyes have that gritty need to go to sleep feel.

      • Hope Doki feels better soon.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I’m with Gryph on this.

      • Good you’re doing better. Maybe you should go to bed so you might not strain and get a headache again. Let the poor brain relax.

        • Eh….That doesn’t really work. I have had a constant headache for about a week now, it starts not long after I wake up and lasts until I fall asleep. It might be eye related….probably need new glasses.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Poor Doki!

          • Yep, with Sticky on this.

I had a similar issue with headaches being eye related. And they did clear up after I got new contacts.

    • Good morning, Danish.

Bad, very evil house construction noise needs to STOP.

      • It’s at the point where I’m so ‘used to it’ that I sometimes manage to fall asleep again in the morning despite the noise >.<
Since it's now 7.17 and they began just after 7 today, I guess that is something I can hope for.

        • I did not set an alarm this morning (for the first time in a LONG time…) but I will always wake up when the bf gets up to go to work, then back to sleep 😉

    • stickfigurefairytales

Poor Danish. I’m glad you’re feeling a bit better, though.

  • I see a Ding, Ding, Ding 😀
Which helps me forget that my walls and floor just started to vibrate.

    • Steven K.

Now if I could only get my bed to vibrate.

      • Brings it here. Everything vibrates a little as machine is working 20-30 feet away from my windows.

    • silibub

That can’t be helping your head.

      • The reason why I’m happy I got most of the headache away in time. Otherwise there might have been blood today – and not mine xD

        • silibub

Bloodthirsty wolf versus a team of construction workers…I think I’d put my money on you!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, I’m back. Ooo… the sweet smell of Dings.
Anyway, I stopped in at the supermarket and bought chocolate. You can have a choice of rum’n’raisin or fruit’n’nut.

    • Ooh… fruit’n’nut for sure! 🙂 *shares cookie dough*

      • stickfigurefairytales

Can I split that with you, starr?

        • Of course! *breaks in half*

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Thank you! <3

    • I will try the rum’n’raisin if I may ^_^

    • *Shoves everyone aside* Did someone say chocolate? >.> Food of gods, how I need thee.

    • Sapfo

Rum´n´raisin, sapfo needs some of that 😉

  • davefragments

Ten minutes and I have to go. I can’t stay up past a certain time.

    • silibub

      You’ll turn into a pumpkin — it’s that season!

      • davefragments

        bright orange, too

        • silibub

Not a good look on anyone.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Have a good night, Dave!

  • It’s in the oven… Should be up in the next 30 minutes… 🙂

    • Not sure if I can last 30 min, but I will try ^_^

    • SofiaT

You can tell when everyone smells an update being close because suddenly the chatting stops. Everyone is too focused pressing “refresh” and trying to catch virgins 😀

      • Actually this hunter used the notice to bet on having time to go make breakfast *fills hungry stomach* 🙂

        • SofiaT

I was about to comment on the eerie silence when Alex posted 😉

        • Saxon_Brenton

For my part, I have to leave for gaming in an hour, so I just took the opportunity to take a shower and shave, and pack my stuff.

    • Terri Sutton

Seems like I started camping just in time.

  • Sapfo
  • justkeepondriving

Not to belittle @silibub:disqus but I can’t even begin to answer the question of what Sircea would wear to a prom! So many ideas…

  • back from vacation, so I’m late on that comment, but: i LOVED that Bananarama-Video – i think I envied that she-Devil. hmm, I was 9 back then. seems you’re never too young to fall for some muscled guys in very little leather…

  • Clearly Duncan has made her go grey. Such a stressful co-villain/-worker.

  • Anagnorisis

    Moai!!

  • Kabbalist

Well, this certainly explains why the Priestess is so very good at grandstanding and theatrics: she’s had millennia of experience playing to crowds. At this point I’m just waiting for her to segue into a Wagnerian aria, or maybe a certain piece from The Magic Flute. I’m sure she’d hit all of the high notes perfectly. Levity aside, I can’t help noticing that she’s not JUST dominating her subjects, she’s also going after the dragon that is menacing them (at least that one time).

I really love the artwork on this page. Not that every other page hasn’t also been a treat for the eyes, but there’s a great deal of variety here, and I can’t help feeling like everyone involved enjoyed playing dress-up with the Platinum Showboat. 😉

Oh…and I laughed and grinned when I saw your link, Alex. I followed it, of course. Well played!
