A “dire threat”? What is this “dire threat” you speak of exactly…?

First off, let me send out VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES both to long-time super-supporter Saxon B. and also to long-time super-mod Admiral Jane! I’m so glad both of you found your way to The Young Protectors and I hope you’ve both had fantastic days!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Looks like we’re getting a little more information about how all this family fun in Hell came about. But I still have questions: What is this “dire threat”? Is that the same thing as the “damage”? How exactly was that damage “created”? And exactly when are these two going to start kissing?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • I sense tension.

  • Lots of PP for silibub

    • silibub

I’m an incredibly happy camper right now, right on! ♥ ♥ ♥

  • davefragments

there’s a bit of backstory coming about that damage the PP did.

    • SofiaT

“Magic users”. Not necessarily Sircea, although she could be part of the problem.

      • Or her priestess order caused the problem.

        • SofiaT

I have a feeling it’s more general. He probably would have said “your magic users” if it was her minions that did it.

Which brings to mind what Amanda said about Spooky being the only person using magic and still being sane.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            A very good point.

          • SofiaT

Somehow it’s all connected: magic users losing their mind, a dire threat to the world, a deal with the devil, the Crisis of Colliding Trans-world identities… it’s like crumbs showing the way but I still feel like we’re circling around the truth, that’s hidden right in front of us.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Is it… that the real mastermind behind all of this… IS MITCH?!?!?!?!

          • ….I could get behind that….as long as him being the mastermind doesn’t lead to his death. ^_^

          • stickfigurefairytales

That actually reminds me of an inside joke with some of my college friends. Our freshman year was when the second Lord of the Rings movie was coming out, and one of my friends hadn’t read the books, so I said that in the end it turns out that Pippin is Sauron in disguise and then everyone dies.

I immediately followed this up by explaining that I was, in fact, lying, since I don’t like actually misleading people. But that has become our default spoiler for everything ever since.

          • True.

  • SofiaT

So, whatever the unknown big bad threat to the world, it was caused by magic?
    Interesting…

  • stickfigurefairytales

I really like PP’s tiara. I kind of want one of my own, but not if it has to have your zodiac sign creature on it. As a Scorpio, I’ve always been a little upset that my thing is a pointy death monster.

    • SofiaT

Mine is a goat with reaaaaally long horns. It wouldn’t make a good crest.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I dunno, it might work on a design like this one. It has lots of little pointy standing-up bits.

        • SofiaT

Not very balanced though. Especially if the goat is on profile.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm. We’ll have some people draw up their designs and see what they come up with.

          • stickfigurefairytales

[Note to self: Find people who will volunteer to do this.]

          • SofiaT

            lol!

          • silibub

I might give it a shot! It sounds like an interesting exercise if nothing else! (Man, my sign is a couple of fish — hard to do anything too impressive with that.)

          • SofiaT

You could do a yin-yang sign made by fish?

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That’s just what I was thinking! 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

Really? That would be so cool! (I could see some cool things with the fish, though – like a pair of lovely detailed koi swimming around each other.)

          • silibub

You and Sofia are right, that could work nicely. Well, you’re Scorpio and Sofia’s Capricorn, yeah? That’s where I’ll start when I get down to it!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, that’s awesome of you! Feel free to put mine on the backburner, though. 😀

          • SofiaT

I’m selfish, won’t make the same offer.
Can’t wait to have my own crest! 😀

          • silibub

So noted! I actually have an idea for what I’d like to do with your mergoat!

          • stickfigurefairytales

            I can’t wait to see! 😀

          • SofiaT

            Me neither! 😀

    • I like being a scorpio. It’s like our zodiac sigh comes with our own warning sign 😉

      • stickfigurefairytales

But if I ever found myself face-to-face with one (that wasn’t safely contained in a zoo or pet store), my reaction would be to shriek at the top of my lungs and run away as fast as I could.

        • My brother got one encased in acrylic. Like a paper weight. To this day I can’t even look at it.

    • Terri Sutton

Go with Celtic Astrology, they use trees, much more friendlier.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hooray for trees! o/

        • I just found out I’m an Elder and a CROW! I love crows. Plus, the description was spot on.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Crows are great! They’re so smart.

      • I had to laugh when I recently found out that my Celtic zodiac animal sign is nothing else but.. a wolf ^_^

I guess it was meant to be *lol*

        • purplefoxglove

          We should start a pack 😉 I’m a wolf, a reed and a Scorpio, too 😀

      • stickfigurefairytales

My tree sign is a reed. That is not a tree. I feel vaguely cheated.

        • SofiaT

          Apparently I’m birch?
No idea what kind of tree that is, the English names of trees elude me.

But my animal celtic sign is a stag, which is kinda awesome. Makes me think of Harry’s Patronus.

          • It’s a tree that can grow pretty big with white bark, and lots of small green leaf. We have a couple of the house I grew up in 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales
          • SofiaT

            Ah! Σημύδα!
            I’m pretty! 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

            You sure are! 🙂

          • SofiaT

            🙂

        • I am the Holly ^_^

          • stickfigurefairytales

But I thought Holly was Holly…

        • I think the Reed description (which again also is me) to be pretty damn spot on.
Remember this also makes you a wolf, my fair iron maiden 😉

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yay wolves!!! 🙂

        • Elrohir

But from a reed, oh Shield Maiden of Rohan, we get music. And that is such power as dreams are made of.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Ooh, good point! Thank you!

        • Terri Sutton

Your Celtic Zodiac animal is the White Hound, is that better?
Would have responded earlier but damn Disqus.

  • Ooooh!! It becomes more and more interesting. Intriguing story here.

  • WHAT THE HELL IS THAT DIRE THREAT? I want to know so bad what it is that is coming, and having them so spooked that they made a deal with a devil.

I’m gonna kick their butts if it ‘just’ something personal as getting old and dying, but somehow I feel there’s more to it.

*waits for Alex to reveal this major plot drama*

  • stickfigurefairytales

Awesome! People’s theories about PP and Duncan possibly doing all this to save the world from something may be right!

    • mogoskier

YAY I can ship Kyle and Duncan again without guilt.

      • SofiaT

        Patience, young Padawan.
        Don’t get over-excited yet…

  • Wayne Small

Duncan still misses kyle does he.

  • ….is her tiara changing?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Its lower side thingies (technical term) do look shorter in the third panel.

    • DC

I can’t see the cow on it as clearly, maybe it is a WIP

    • SofiaT

I can still see the bull in the middle and the unicorns(?)/stags(?) on each side of it.

  • Terri Sutton

I predict that the “dire threat” is that Trans-world Collision Thing-y that was mentioned in the prologue. Or at least very connected to it.
Also I am very glad that Duncan wasn’t brooding about Kyle, because time and place people, time and place.

    • SofiaT

But didn’t Duncan say that there is a threat looming that will make the crisis of colliding Trans-world identities pale in comparison?

That means it’s something else, even if it’s connected to it somehow.

      • Terri Sutton

Red herring. Duncan down played it so that Kyle doesn’t get to suspicious about the wining and dining while the world could implode (or explode).

        • SofiaT

He said it after the spell. At that point he had no reason to lie.

          • Terri Sutton

I thought it only mentioned it during the date in Hong Kong.
But he is a Supervillian, he might have said it to throw the YP off his trail. The less the good guys know about you’re plan or you’re motives the less they can do that will mess up your plan. I think that is one of rules of being an Evil Overlord.

  • mogoskier

I love how Duncan is acting carefully and PP is like your fine it just a demon.

    • SofiaT

I’d like to hear her say that to the demon’s face…

      • I wouldn’t bet against her doing it. I bet she has the steel spine to do it.

      • Steven K.

Might not be a problem – maybe Laampros might be entranced with P.P.’s heaving massive bosom and she’d be entranced by his giant wagging pendulous schlong. And soon thereafter Kyle will have a step mom and a step-baby-brother in swaddling fire.

        • Steven K.

Or would that simply be baby half-brother? Yeah – it would be his half brother, since a step-brother would be any male children that P.P. already has, before getting knocked up by Laampros.

        • silibub

          LOL! And also *shudder*

I don’t know about “massive bosom” exactly…that bustier looks like it has a push-up effect, but even with it her proportions are pretty regular. One of the things I appreciate about the ladies’ design in this comic is none of them have cartoonish balloon boobs.

          • Steven K.

Of course I’m exaggerating a little and being a bit cheeky. We never did really see the true proportions of Laampros’ endowment either.

  • silibub

*narrows eyes* Watch yourself there, Duncan my wondrous buddy, you’re sounding just a tad accusatory for somebody who’s had no problem using magic to suit his own ends so far. Although…maybe it’s a particular type or implementation of magic that created this “dire threat” in the first place. I wonder if Sircea herself was involved, or if Duncan’s just talking about peers/predecessors.

I’m dying to find out what exactly this threat is! Is it a threat to the world at large, or one that more specifically affects Duncan and Sircea and thus motivates them to intervene? (Sircea’s wording is interesting: “fringe benefits” — so this isn’t a plot motivated purely, or even primarily, for selfish reasons? Again, hard to say until we know exactly what’s going on.)

My best guess is that the barrier between Hell and Earth is wearing thin, possibly precipitated by the manifestation of Kyle’s powers. Maybe the dissolution of that barrier is why Spooky crossed over in the first place, rather than someone purposefully sending him to Hell — either way, I think something serious went down six years ago that’s had a cascading effect on the current events of the comic, and now things are reaching critical mass.

Well. I’m tired and still a little loopy, so I’ll save more serious speculation for later. At least Sircea’s claim that this sort of deal is “well-trod ground” is a little reassuring in the sense that they’re not flying completely blind; I imagine many have attempted to manipulate demons for the benefit of humanity, and probably most of them failed, but maybe Duncan and Sircea are clever enough to note the mistakes of others and create a workable scheme.

A sizable percentage of my love to you, Alex, Adam, and Veronica for yet another terrific page! (Three guesses as to where the rest of my love goes. Spoiler alert, it’s a magical babe.) Oh, and — there’s supposed to be an excellent fight sequence this chapter, yeah? I just hope it turns out to be what I’d consider an ideal situation: not the Young Protectors fighting Team Silver Fox, but heroes and villains teaming up to take on the demons before they can lay claim to most of Earth. Fingers crossed!

  • CH

Duncan seems a lot less gung-ho now. Like in the moment he wishes even more that there had been another option and honestly believes they have to do this. I’m not calling him innocent or saying he’s doing this for noble reasons, just that it seems less evil just now. Withholding judgment until we know more about the “dire threat” personally.

  • indigofromage

    cliffhangers… cliffhangers everywhere…

I’m intrigued by the disparity between magic-users and non-magic-users. Despite Duncan’s earlier glibness towards Kyle about ‘things he knows nothing about’, it’s clear there are sizeable gaps in Dunc’s knowledge too.

    • Elrohir

Indeed, and that PP notes that other people who have acted similarly are now seen as saints. Which raised the question for me as to whether or not some early magic users are now seen as holy people (saints). A paraphrase of Arthur C. Clarke’s axiom might be needed:
“Any sufficiently advanced Magic is indistinguishable from Religion.”

  • SofiaT

“You have executed your plan flawlessly”

It didn’t seem that way to me… So either Anni didn’t share all that happened in Hell (and before… and after) with his partner in crime, or we‘re missing something here.

    • silibub

Yeah…I wonder if she realizes how much Duncan came to admire/care about Kyle? Since she seems to think he’s hesitating because he’s not thrilled with the idea of bargaining with demons.

      • Which is always a possibility as well.

      • SofiaT

And if she did/does realise… what will she do about it?

I hope she doesn’t come with the idea that Kyle should “get out of the way” (mafia style) so that Duncan will stop being “distracted”. o.O

        • silibub

Yikes — I hope she’s savvy enough not to seriously consider it even if it does cross her mind. I don’t think there’s any way Duncan would accept it, and she should know him well enough to be aware of that.

        • justkeepondriving

I think it would be more befitting of a villain if PP got DUNCAN out of HER way, mafia style, if she thought things were gonna get messy.

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

If the plan was flawless, then leaving Kyle behind in the warehouse may have been part of plan.

    • indigofromage

also, if Sircea’s the magic-user, why didn’t she lurk around and go with them to Hell? Would it have been different if she’d been there too?

      • Steven K.

I wouldn’t have wanted her to have the pleasure of seeing our beautiful Kyle nekkid, esp. if that would have made the poor shy bound kid even MORE uncomfortable.

      • justkeepondriving

Duncan needed to get Kyle alone so that Kyle would trust him enough to let his guard down. I don’t think Sircea would’ve been able to just ‘lurk around’, I think she would’ve needed to be part of the actual spell-casting to be able to go with them.

    • stickfigurefairytales

“It was totally my plan to get my arm burned, briefly lose control over the partially demonic teen I had magically imprisoned, and then feel bad about screwing him over!”

      • SofiaT

        Exactly!

I think Duncan is keeping secrets…

      • silibub

“No seriously, it went really, really well. Why am I holding my arm behind my back? Ha! Haha! You’re imagining things — must be all that crazy magic!”

      • Jakk Anthony Guzman

They must have had a plan as to what to do with Kyle once they got back from hell.

  • indigofromage

gotta love how Sircea’s armour protects virtually nothing… for someone wishing for eternal youth and health, yowza!

  • Jen Roberts

I’m actually kind of hoping that they’re trying to save the world in a strange sort of way (back to the whole “the world is a Mess and I just need to rule it” theory). The ends justify the means there, yeah? And it makes them more antagonists than just hand-rubbing, maniacal-cackling evil.

But I’m also wondering if the “dire threat” is meant to refer to superheroes? They’d be a dire threat to supervillains, after all. Either way, I’ll be interested to see where Alex takes us with all of this. (And, as usual, awesome art and coloring! :D)

    • indigofromage

there’s a brilliant line from The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy that sums up how I feel about Dunc+Sirc’s attitude to saving/ruling the world:

“To summarize: it is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.”

    • timemonkey

I don’t think they’re interested in saving the world so much as saving themselves. Anything else the happen to save is merely for their own comfort.

  • Hmm.. could it be that a magic-doer or two has done things that has softened the ‘walls’ between dimension.. planes of physical existence sort of thing?

Spooky somehow ended up in a hell dimension without wanting it on the day that might have been when his powers kicked in – and he got back through a magical dimension door. Are those doors breaking down?

The superheroes and -villains are away talking about a transworld identity crisis, but aren’t they grasping the full problem?
Do PP and Anni see it as better to have a devil you ‘know’ already ruling the earth rather than having a load of hells literally come down on them?

I’ve mentioned this before back in chapter 2 pages as a theory, but I’m still not completely sure where to ‘go’ with this thread of thoughts. Is it really something so BIG, or am I missing something important in plot (which I probably am).

    • silibub

I’m on board with the theory that the walls between dimensions are weakening. I’m thinking maybe Duncan and Sircea are hoping to preemptively draw powerful demons to Earth — where their powers might be weaker? the rules aren’t clear yet — and defeat them before they can just start crossing of their own accord. So they strike a deal with Laampros asking for all the usual gifts like immortality and eternal youth to make it look legit, when really they’re laying a trap?

  • stickfigurefairytales

Man, Duncan, why you gotta be like that? Why you gotta keep bringing up that whole magic thing?

  • CH

Hey Alex I think there’s a typo in panel 3 PP says “tooks months for me to hammer out” shouldn’t it be “took”?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Actually, the deal was hammered out with the assistance of one Peregrine “Pippin” Took and his family.

      • No one must know about my childhood crush on Pippin Took…

        • silibub

          I never read this.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          What crush? I didn’t hear/read anything…

        • davefragments

I fell in love with John Rubenstein and Ben Vereen on Pippen does that count? After all, it is “Magic to do” and all that.

        • Sapfo

          YOU TOO!
          Pippin! ^_^

        • Elrohir

Understandable…though Merry was more my type. 🙂

        • >.> Took AND Samwise? Oh Alex, you like those little Hobbitses 😉

          • Tolkien made me gay.

          • No, Alex, no. He just gave you a reason to realize it 😉
When crushing on hobbits there was no going back from there.

          • Justinius Phoenix

reminds me of a blog i read online once called “The Secret Diaries Of Lord of the Rings” its a hoot to read very boarderline Slash fiction lol

          • timemonkey

Personally the Power Rangers made me gay.

          • HA!

          • Terri Sutton

We still have time to get him to admit to crushing on Merry and Frodo and wanting a 5-way orgy.

        • AseretZone

And who WOULDN’T adore Pippin? He’s adorable!

      • CH

        Old bullroarer maybe?

    • Good catch. On it! 🙂

      • Fixed.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Not if I never refresh the page, it’s not! I will live defiantly outside time!

          • stickfigurefairytales

(I may be getting a little tired.)

    • I read that a few times, and only the first time did I find it strange and then I just went with it instead of taking it as a typo >.>
I think my brain is fooling with me.

    • Elrohir

Tooks…isn’t that the plural for the cousins of the Brandybucks? I mean, how often do you get to use a line like:
“Fool of a Took! Next time do us all a favor and throw yourself in!

  • Steven K.

“Deal with the devil” vs. “arrangement with a spiritual power”. Hmmmmm……gotta love people’s word choices to put their spin on things. Reminds me of a video I was watching a while back on cryogenics, where the director of this cryogenics facility in Detroit referred to the dead people he had frozen in these big tanks of liquid nitrogen not as “dead people”, but as “metabolically challenged patients”.

  • Mary Klemzak

Woah whoa whoa! Who said they’re gonna kiss?!? Partners in crime, yes. I don’t care about no hetero kissy kissy. They did a very baad thing.

Using the devil?!? Sure, guys. Whatever you wanna delude yourself into thinking.

    • DC

“hetero kissy kissy”, haha, is that the ‘dire threat’ maybe?, jk 🙂

      • Mary Klemzak

Yeah, dire threat: Yaoi webcomic has hetero kissing. Story at 11!

  • Thank you for the birthday wishes, Alex! A great page to end a nice day. 😀

Again, the answer is kissing. That answer is always kissing.

  • Michael T.

this has nothing at all to do with this panel, but i think i found the headline from when kyle first got discovered his powers! http://imgur.com/LJCTmaT

    • Steven K.

      Indeed! Good find!

    • AseretZone

      Dang. Kyle, what you done?!

  • Rafael

In the end, is almost impossible to “use” the devil on a deal. They always use the little letters at the foot of the contract to their benefit (the devils must be lawyers lol). This will end very bad for our charming villians.

    • zunden

No, no, no—-devils TEACH law, not practice it. They show the lawyers how to do what they’ve been doing for centuries, as an amusing side job.

  • Steven K.

I think the cow head in P.P.’s tiara is flanked by two lions rampant (to use the heraldic lingo).

    • Steven K.

Or could be some other beastie. And the one on our right / her left (not sure about the one on the other side) looks like it might be sporting quite a …..well….tumescent thingy.

      • Danny

Looking at the last page, I think at least one of those creatures flanking the cow/bull head is a unicorn.

        • Steven K.

Oh – that could make sense – there’s also a tradition of those depicted similarly holding up shields in heraldic designs. Does sorta look like that too.

          • Danny

That’s a good point. Aren’t lions and unicorns usually paired, as they tend to balance each other out? (Lions symbolizing masculine, “sun” power, and unicorns symbolizing feminine, “moon” power.)

  • Adam Irving

Proof magic really does work – the priestess seems like she’d be roughly parallel with Duncan in age, if not older. And yet, from what we can see, she hardly has an ounce of fat. She must really, really love her pilates videos!

Hmmm…this is an interesting development. Seems that there’s more to this than meets the eye. It CERTAINLY doesn’t sound like they’re planning on world domination…

  • Vik-Thor

    This sounds very interesting.

  • tony__

Do we get to see any Annihilator and Kyle time in this chapter?

    • timemonkey

Hopefully the former will be set on fire by the latter.

  • Kiri

I don’t think that world domination is necessarily what they’re planning – but it may be one of those nice little fringe-benefits that PP is talking about. If it was the barriers between worlds weakening, Laampros wouldn’t have needed his portal to this world, he would have waited until he could rain down his own fiery hell on everyone. And here’s a question that’s just come to me – who is Kyle’s mum? And could HE be the dire threat that they’re scared of?

  • Sapfo

    Good old friends or sibblings?
An old question yes, but I really want to know.
Anyway, I do enjoy that the colors of them are cold (gray/blue)

With the significant chin of Duncan´s, he must be an Alfa, but why does it feel as if the PP is the one who controls everything?

To doubt this far into the plan is not good. And being too confident usually do not end well either. I think these are two should read a little more about things that usually go wrong when someone will take over the world.

I have a book here “How to take over the world in 10 steps and what can go wrong: The super villian guide of what not to do”. I still have not gotten this published ….. or written. But I’m working on it. When I am done writing it I be sure to give Duncan and PP a copie to read.

Thanks to Alex, Adam and Veronica for a great new page. I hope Veronica had a great time at comic con.

And again Happy birthday Saxton and AJ! Even if it might be over now. ♥

I’m back from Saturday gaming. Thank you to Alex and all the other birthday well-wishers. Yes, lovely day, even if the celebratory dinner with the family will be held off until next week when the parents visit Sydney.

The first thing that struck me about today’s page is the Priestess’ line that they’re not making a deal with the Devil, but rather an arrangement with a spiritual power. Thing is, with what we know about A. & PP.’s relationship (and here I’m particularly thinking of line back in chapter 1 about Annihilator sparring with the Priestess for pleasure) I’m having trouble deciding whether the Priestess’ rephrasing here is a euphemistic quibble that indicates she doesn’t really want to admit the dangerous extent of what they’re involved in, or a literal and technically correct clarification, or just light banter whose only significant is as plot exposition.

The second thing was her comment about a few fringe benefits – which makes me pleased with my phrasing on the last comments page that A. & PP. are charging a ‘fixers fee’ for solving whatever the dire threat is upcoming.

Thirdly, Annihilator’s arm. Now, I’ve gone back and checked the art rather carefully, and you know, I think the burn that Red Hot gave Annihilator had almost completely healed by the time A. left the warehouse. Most of the dark shading that was used to indicate burns had vanished by chap.2 page48, which was the last time we get a good look at his arm – and what remained *could* have been meant as forearm hair. So much for my idea about burns stigmata. That said, the sigils that Laampros carved on hadn’t begun to fade by p.47 so I’m wondering whether they should still be visible now and have been covered with illusion or maybe we’re looking at the arm from the wrong angle.

  • LauraMoyer

This is the oddest place to post this, but I really need a hug. Normally these updates help me when I’m in a funk but tonight has just been the pits, and… I don’t know what to do. Sorry…

It’s a great page though, and does further allude to several questionable conversations that have happened throughout the story so far that made passing mention of a larger plan… still hoping Anni might redeem himself somehow.

    • SofiaT

  • Justinius Phoenix

Well this page gives us more questions then answers…. I still am having a strong feeling about PP and Anni being related somehow cause they don’t strike me as lovers cause i think Anni is truly gay…. but also could the threat that all the adult Supers of the world be too much for them to handle is it something PP has known has been coming for a long time? Could what they are doing wit hthat clear box thing be to trap Lampros and use his power to actually save the world and thru absorbing his powers gain there “fringe benefits”?, cause in all honesty no Super Villian wants the world destroyed is they are trying to rule it or least part of it. An who are these Spiritual Powers that PP has been in touch with, perhaps the other side of things (i.e. Angels or “God”) is the true deal with them, is it them who are going to grant them the fringe benefits? So many question, such a long wait till we get all the answers…..

  • Nate

And the Word of the Day is:

    Hubris.

Seriously, this is practically a textbook case. Has she never read the Evil Overlord list?

  • xLizardx

Ooo, the plot thickens! 😀 I love the ambiguity this introduces over the presumed pure villainy of their actions.

  • Kit the Coyote

Ahh the old save the world by destroying it trick!

  • Niggle

Very very interesting! I won’t speculate, I’ll just read the comments. 😉

  • TwilightDreamer

Man, the brain is trying to go on overdrive, but I have absolutely no idea where this is heading! XD lol, oh man, desperately want to know what their full plan is…
Dang it Anni…I still want to be mad at you, but just two pages back into the story, and I’m barely cross anymore….XP

  • WarGoddess

Dire threat= dying perhaps? And maybe the “damage” could be when someone messed around with something they shouldn’t have and caused all of the different superpowers to surface all over the world? Just tossing around some theories here. Maybe the “damage” could be referring to the fact that people live shorter lives now than in recorded biblical times. Or it could be the fact that we die at all. Either way, It’s bad for Mr. McBaddypants here who doesn’t want to die. 😀

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

Hmm….interesting point…..why would he be afraid of dying…..he already knows there is Hell….possibly because of things he has done…Heaven is out of reach.

      • WarGoddess

I believe that he is arrogant enough to believe that the world requires him to remain in it. Such a handsome prick. 😀

        • SofiaT

The world is not worth living in, if Duncan is not in it, duh! 😛

    • SofiaT

I really like the idea that superpowers manifested in this world as a result of a magical Chernobyl. It actually makes sense: “Classic superheroes, written long before you and I made them real“. http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch2-page-2/

While Kyle grew up dreaming of rescuing cute boys from real supervillains he saw on tv (supervillains like Duncan), Anni dreamed of having the powers of the Man of Steel, as a child. The Man of Steel. An imaginary superhero, not one from the real world. Most likely because there weren’t any real superheroes around at that time yet to look up to.

So superpowers have only been around for the last couple of generations or so. And that must be when the “damage” started to happen too…

Thanks WarGoddess, you really made the wheels start turning in my head with this one!

      • WarGoddess

        You’re welcome! I love being a wheel turner!!!!! 😀

  • Shinashi

If Anni and PP are doing something for the greater good, I’mma flip my shit. I love those kind of people, makes for such interesting people :3

    • warwriter

Even “villains” will have something in mind for the greater good; it just depends on what side you’re on.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Somehow I cannot believe that this is for “the greater good” of anyone on Earth…..we have yet to see what happens when the demon starts to redeem his side of the “agreement”

  • Onomatopoeia

  • SofiaT

So… To connect all the info we have in our hands so far:

Is it possible that reckless use of magic can have consequences both to the minds of those who use it (effectively driving them cuckoo) as well as the fabric of the world, tearing it apart? Causing the different universes to collapse on top of each other, causing in turn the Crisis of Colliding Trans-world identities… and something even worse but yet unknown to us?

And how does voluntarily opening a gate to a Hell realm help with that?

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

There was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation “Force of Nature”, about warp drive propulsion harming the very fabric of space.

    • silibub

The only benefit I can see to opening the gate is that it creates a specific portal for the demons to pass through, rather than have the dimensions merge and allow demons to just spawn randomly. It would make it easier to contain the situation and kill the demons before they spread to the rest of the world, if that’s part of the plan.

      • SofiaT

That makes sense. But it would leave one pissed-off Laampros; and can Laampros be contained?

The other possibility is that they plan to use Laampros’ army as a weapon against another dark power. But I have a hard time imagining a power more dangerous and more destructive than a king of Hell.

        • silibub

I’m not sure how they would get control of his army, but then I’m not sure how they could kill Laampros, either. I think you summed everything up beautifully in your first comment, but there are still so many ways this could go. Knowing if they plan to involve Kyle further would go a way toward narrowing it down — or maybe even seeing what’s in the glass case of mystery.

          • Unless they plan to do like they did in Superman II and they drain his power, maybe with that glass box?

          • SofiaT

That box in Superman II concentrated kryptonite rays.
I wonder what could weaken Laampros… Concentrated holy water? 😛

          • silibub

As long as no one’s bending over to grab it…

          • Or something like that. Who knows if these demons have an allergy to such things. Maybe they would use kryptonite rays.

        • Saxon_Brenton

And how does voluntarily opening a gate to a Hell realm help with that? You’ve got me there. More data needed. Negotiating for Laampros’ demon minions to act as an army against whatever-is-worse-that-the-Crisis-Of-Colliding-Transsworld-Identities is one option. Positing that a hell world that is being used as a prison should by default be a low energy/low resources location simply so that the inhabitants can’t scrabble together enough wherewithal to escape and attack the jailors would be a good justification for your ‘steam pressure bleed off’ analogy. But my gut feeling is the solution is something that we don’t know about yet.

          • SofiaT

Most likely. The journey so far has been full of surprises (did you see a trip to hell coming? because I didn’t!), so I expect more surprises in the future.
I’m just throwing random thoughts out there, in case someone picks them up and takes them further -and we might, just might manage to figure it out.

I mean, if we all come up with a couple of theories each, one of them is due to get close, right?

        • Klaus

Another king of hell. Maybe a demonic invasion is imminent, and the opening of the gate will force whoever is behind to act before he is quite ready? But this raises the question: is having two demonic armies fight for the earth better than being invaded by just one?

  • bergulme .

I like how they have this heart-to-heart in broad daylight, in the middle of their troop of evil monks working.
    Two of them going:
“Did you hear that? One of the bosses got issues.”
    “Sssh! Shut up, Ted!”
“No, I mean, do you know what is really going here? What is that thing anyway? A Stargate? Don’t you need cherons for those?”
“Just be quiet and keep raking, Ted.”

    • Elrohir

I LOVE the concept of a background dialogue among the minions! Nicely done! 🙂

    • ….is Ted’s companion by any chance Bill?

    • 🙂

  • I’m surprised that most of us some how pulled ourselves away from panel 2. I mean seriously, that man has an incredible close up.

On another note I believe this is another Master Class for the concerned/worry expression. Duncan really flew threw Bad Guy School with flying colors. I bet most of the other students either hated him or wanted to be him. And being with him, well that was a given, yes? 😛

    • Saxon_Brenton

So, what attracts you to the depiction in panel 2? Those big blue eyes? Or the way the art makes most of the linework and shading defining the shape of his face (cheeks, jawline, bridge of nose…) in grey rather than black, so that it contrives to look cragged and soft at the same time? Or something else?

  • TraceyS

I saw this coming! I knew that there have been a reason for the things he did. Especially since he actually seemed to care about Kyle.

  • HermeticallySealed

    Several observations:
One is that just because someone is considered a villain or “evil” does not mean they see themselves as such. Many feel that they are justified, even sanctified for doing what they do. I think Duncan is fairly honest in his past statements of feeling forced into being a villain, because the world already hated him for merely being gay. However, i would say that he isn’t really evil, merely selfish/self serving. This doesn’t preclude him from doing good, but as he said, “the ends justify the means.”

I’m not sure about Sircea. We really haven’t been told just what she has done that qualifies her as evil, beyond that she is Spooky’s nemesis. Honestly, she could be like Duncan, but then I have a feeling she’s got more going here than even he knows.

They both honestly seem to feel something bad is going to happen, and are acting to stop/minimize it, albeit working it to their advantage. Even bad guys will act in the greater good if their own interests are at stake, they are just less likely to be ethical in their methods.

I don’t think we can read too much into Sircea’s intellectualization about their Faustian deal. Firstly, even Spooky corroborated that Laampros was ‘a’ king of Hell, not ‘the’ king. It is also a pretty standard occultic trope that spirits/demons/gods are merely personifications of universal forces, either given sentience through mystic means or by human perceptions of reality. We really don’t have enough information of this world’s metaphysical layout to know whether Sircea has intimate knowledge of the reality, or if she is arrogantly dismissive. I am willing to err on the side of her having the experience, or at least done the research to know what she is doing. I think if anything, she is a bit complacent exactly because she is familiar with it.

I am half prone to believe that as carefully as Sircea mapped out the deal with Laampros, that she is planning something a bit more for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if she plans on summoning him only to have the hero’s swoop in to defeat him for her and Duncan, thus fulfilling their side of the deal and getting the benefits. Nothing in their deal beholds the two to act in his best interests beyond the summoning, after all.

    • SofiaT

      Very well said!

    • silibub

This is terrifically insightful! Villains who don’t do evil for the sake of it, but instead act in their own best interests even if it means other people get screwed over, are the best kind in my opinion. They can still be sympathetic and do good things even if they’re not “good” people, so they’re never caricatures. I’d say Duncan and Sircea are more in the “neutral” than “evil” category (and I bet they’re both really good at justifying their actions to themselves, heh.)

Edit: when I talk about good/neutral/evil I tend to think in the D&D alignment terms.

      • SofiaT

I understand “neutral” as being capable of both good and evil.
It’s what most people are made of, in various degrees, and it makes for very interesting villains. (by “evil” here I mean selfish acts that can be hurtful to others, not the “mwah hah ha, I enjoy inflicting pain” kind)

        • silibub

Very true! Villains are boring when they’re just being evil to be evil, or blatantly acting in their own self interest without caring who they hurt. Duncan’s more compelling than that because suddenly he does care, and even before that his motivations weren’t entirely selfish.

      • HermeticallySealed

Duncan is certainly “chaotic neutral” and freely admitted that his justification was summed up as “the world hurt me, so I am going to hurt it.” Sircea, as stated, is harder to pin if for no other reason that we just don’t know anything really about her. I think we’ll see enough in how the events unfold to know, however.

    • Very nice analysis, HermeticallySealed. Fun for me to read. 🙂

  • Derkins

Hm. Not sounding very anarchistic there Duncan.

  • Another tricksy page Alexxxxxxsssssss, our precccccious. It’s clear these two Dark Riders are up to no good, but the justifications are running rampant and going to leave the forces for GOOD (erm, that’s our TYP kids) in confusion. OKAY, ANOTHER DARN NIFTY SHIFTY PAGE ALL THE WAY AROUND.

I’ll just say it once. Adam and Veronica, just like insdide the jet, you make the absolute most out of two people talking. The compositions that put heads at different levels and focus on the speakers in the best way. I love that in many ways you use the best of over the shoulder film framing so we never lose track of where people are in relation to each other. It makes for delightfully easy reading. In addition the facial expressions are so right for these characters and this discussion.

P#1 – I love S’s little dig presented as a compliment. She’s so crafty. In one line, she reminds Duncan that he’s done “HIS” plan perfectly — OUCH (Second guess THAT!). However, he is so her equal, and knows her so well. What a good comeback line and a frown that says he knows exactly what she’s up to. Like any long time partners, they know each other too darn well.

P#2-3 – I’m totally guessing, Duncan seems more brutally self-honest. That statement is a flat reality. It MAY not go wrong, but oh so often these things do and, he’s right, hubris is most often what causes the fail in these supernatural bargains. Now on #3 we get the opposite. S. uses self-comforting terminology. Words that MAY be true, I don’t know, but I don’t know how many would look at Laampros as a simple “Spirit?”

I read her line as if it brings comfort to her to think in those terms (which may or may not be dangerous). She also used intermediaries… human or spirit… one missed word in the negotiations and BAM, trouble. Sircea was also the one who said early on that only Solomon understood THE OLD RULES (?) Oh my how does THAT affect this tricksy plan.

(last two panels of the linked page)
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch1-page-20/

Sounds like she’s trying to pull a “Solomon.” Wow.

So, she has relegated Laampros, who Spooky referred to as one of the most powerful KINGS OF HELL to a “Spirit” in her own mind. A ‘spirit’ that she and Duncan are not serving in return for power, but rather using. In addition she acknowledges that immortality is “fringe benefits” (erm… not inconsiderable ones) and we all know the old adage about getting something for nothing?

Random note: reading up on saints, most of them had to die horrible deaths to gets sainted. Ho-hum.

Once again, brutally honest, Duncan points out that magic users have caused whatever problem they are trying to fix. This might lead me to think this has been going on for a long time. With many others involved. So is it possible that a solution could have been found that did NOT require the violation of one 18-year-old boy? Who knows? I don’t, but that provides more to think about.

Clearly this is a problem not isolated to these two, nor to this singular moment in time. The hints that this has been six+ years in creating a possible solution have been waved in our face. The DAMAGE could have been accreting much longer than that?

Someone else said it well. This page (as usual) raises more questions than it answers.

And note we STILL don’t get our reverse angle on the clear box?

Adam and Veronica. I really do like the lovely 2-shot, single, two shot, single, rhythm to the page. There is a lovely flow to this page. Alex, I also love the overall flow to this section after all the other sections. Each with their own style and mood. City Streets, then warehouse, mountains and hell, Then the jet and it’s mechanical world and now we’re in a forest. The variety is smart and engaging and restful to the eye. Again I can’t wait to fondle hold my hard copy and enjoy it all all over again. Lovely page friends, and thank you.

Addendum: I agree with the Admiral. Alex, this KISSING you keep mentioning… I’m all for it (with the obvious caveat). In fact, it might solve a lot of problems. (he he he) Just ponder that.

Addendum #2: What if Laampros gives them YOUTH and they end up about 18-ish, but with only their memories as of 18-years-old. Hmmm, that might put them at just the right age and level of need to be fine new additions to The Young Protectors… how interesting.

    • Danny

I agree with your analysis except for one part: I don’t think that the “Spirit” that the Platinum Priestess mentions is Laampros. She refers to him later on in the page as a devil, which intimates that the “Spiritual Power” is someone (or something) else. If so, that introduces yet another angle into this already-complex situation – what are the interests of this other higher power? Are they altruistic? Or self-serving? And is self-serving bad for humanity?

      • Possible, although I read the page oppositely. Duncan says he made a deal with the devil, IMHO, meaning Laampros and indicated he’s aware of what can possibly go wrong in such a traditional deal.

I took Sircea’s reply as her trying to woo Duncan to her way of thinking and to sooth him and help him regain his confidence (or focus if you will). She refers to Laampros as a ‘spirit’ to make Laampros seem simpler and less dangerous. She didn’t make the deal… Duncan did. She didn’t see Laampros the way Duncan did.

I’m still not sure if she’s trustworthy even for Duncan. (Honestly don’t know) And it’s true, that for most of us, the word “devil” comes with lots of baggage about how their bargains with humans go horribly wrong for the human. OTOH, the word “spirit” makes us think of Prospero and the idea that human mages can practically harness their power like an engine.

So I hear what you’re saying and time will tell. But I did read this page as Sircea referring to Laampros as a spirit to calm Duncan. We’ll just have to see. Interesting stuff.

I also think that Alex has gone to a certain amount of effort to define both Laampros’ HELL and the ones we saw with Spooky in the Bonus as our classic (somewhat Catholic-ish) hells, filled with classic demons and devils of various shapes and sizes. Even down to the binding, blood-on-arm with Duncan of their agreement.

So for the moment, I’m thinking that we are dealing with that kind of hell as opposed to one of the strange dimensional “hell’s” such as in one of Charles Stross’ LAUNDRY FILES SERIES, i.e. THE APOCOLYPSE CODEX. Stross’ world is more Lovecraftian and uses dimensional breaches to accidentally let in creatures our brains are not able to comprehend and humans often get eaten inside out. More fractal horror than deal gone wrong stuff.

        Laampross seems classic to me.

Now, there is always a possibility that what we witnessed with Lampross and George Finnegan Edwards was all illusion and COULD be something different. But there lies the way to madness. I’m not going there until Saxon opens the door and invites me through with one of his special theories. 🙂

        Nice pondering with you.

        • Danny

Alright, I believe that I understand better now where you are coming from, and I can see how it does make sense that way. However, while I still feel that PP is attempting to reassure Duncan by saying that they have another higher power on their side, I can see either scenario working out in the story, and I’m looking forward to the answers in future pages.

But as you say, time will tell. And hopefully we readers will always have things to ponder and discuss, until the end of the story. 🙂

        • Klaus

I think it is quite certain that “devil” and “spiritual power” both refers to Laampros. But the PP is saying that she made the deal. The final act of sealing the deal was done by Duncan, but the deal is mostly her work.

    • Another wonderfully fun to read and insightful analysis, Christopher. I’m glad you’re liking the different visual feel to each scene (certainly something I keep in mind when scripting) and you’re asking really good questions.

The discussion on this page is a ton of fun for me to read. 🙂

  • bronakopdin

…if those two start real kissing I’ll be shocked… can’t even say why, but kissing between friends is not good… as evil as they may be friends are friends… when you kiss things get complicated…

I’m enjoying this even though I don’t yet understabd much ^^ Yet we sure seem to spin the threads together! Looking forward to read the next pages 🙂

Since I’ll go on holidays starting tomorrow and won’t have a net connection where I’ll go: see you all Aug 17th when I’m back 😀

    • Mihael Keehl

      he is gay lol

      • bronakopdin

we all know that!? ESPECIALLY because of that… still a kiss between friends is possible, right? Though I think those are no good, their actual sexual orientation doesn’t matter at all ^^

    • silibub

They can go ahead and make out — I can live vicariously through Duncan for a panel or so, haha!

      • bronakopdin

xD well replace him then ^^

        • silibub

LOL! Believe me, if I had the funds I would have bribed Alex to write me into this a long time ago. But at least I know what I’ll do if I ever win the lottery.

    • Have a safe trip!!!

    RNING-GUESSING-WARNING-GUESSING-WARNING-GUESSIN

    • Saxon_Brenton

What if our heroes really jeopardise the last chance of saving Humanity from a “dire threat”?
This is one of the big questions, of course.
We readers are naturally inclined to think that because the Annihilator and the Platinum Priestess are the supervillains that they’re automatically wrong on pretty much everything to at least some extent. That doesn’t *just* mean ‘They’re deliberately lying as a way to trick people and get what they want’, but also includes things like ‘They’re acting without all the information’ and ‘They’re overlooking an obvious solution to the problem’.
Even in the last few pages, when the two of them talking together in a situation where they have no need to be deceitful, and it’s clear that they think they’re doing the right thing, I know I’ve been putting forward ideas in terms of ‘What Shakespearean style fatal flaw is going to make Annihilator overlook something crucial?’ [And, no, I’m not going to seriously entertain the idea that their current talk is an elaborate trick for the benefit of any random cultist minion who may be working within earshot in the background. That’s overthinking things, even for me 😛 ]
How about we turn the situation on its head and look at it from another angle? This is a superhero comic, and we’ve already had some action packed fight and rescue scenes. Traditionally that would mean that the heroes burst in, stop the supervillain plot, an then come up with a solution to whatever the ‘dire problem’ is because as heroes they can *of course* see a solution that the villains have overlooked.
But this is also a yaoi romance comic, with lots of Teh Feelz. How much more *emotionally engaging* would it be to have the heroes burst in, realise that they risk – as you say – jeopardising the last chance of saving Humanity from a dire threat, and have to decide whether or not to help A. and the PP. even though what they really *want* to do beat the crap out of them. And of course in such a scenario the plot circumstances would contrive for Red Hot to be the one who has to struggle briefly with the decision before putting away desire for personal revenge in favour of saving the world. I imagine we’d get another run of comments pages that break the thousand posts barrier as the fans argued about it.

      • Donald Burch

I’m a fan of the “Doctor Doom” and “Magneto” style villain who has noble intentions but takes a grim, harsh perspective about how to go about doing good. Example, Doctor Doom wanted to do away with all nuclear power and end the potential for nuclear war. A noble cause save that his method for accomplishing this ends nuclear medicine, too. He saw saving the world as a fair price to pay for the loss of lives to cancer.

Meanwhile, heroes tend to fight for “impractical” and “unrealistic” options which is why these villains tend to see heroes as dangerous idealists and fools. When one’s motivation is well-grounded and believable it makes the conflict all the more interesting. I suspect such is the case here as Alex has proven on many occasions that he spins complex, intelligent stories. I am eager to see the plot unfold!

  • Jackal

    Oh, Duncan. You silly bastard.

  • Kate G

I will make a coherent comment once I take a shower because this page makes me think many thoughts of he-who-musn’t-be-named-for-fear-of-fireballs is having second thoughts.

  • Maus Merryjest

Hmm, I’m not entirely sure keeping a ‘dire threat’ secret from everybody is a good idea, especially if you’re the last two people capable of dealing with— and you tick off a group of heroes by using one of them for said plan of which you have explained nothing.

Oh Duncan, Duncan, ten points for style but minus several million for good thinking, as the immortal Zaphod Beeblebrox might have said 🙂

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I’ve wondered why he didn’t explain to Kyle why he had to do it (if he cared for him at all) once they got back to the warehouse, and instead left him there naked.

I’m guessing that Duncan has a reason why Kyle shouldn’t know. They might need Laampros even after they make a deal with him.

We know that Laampros can read people and if Laampros is going to be on this side, then he might come in contact with Kyle now and then, Laampros might sense something and that might endanger their plans.

Whatever it is (once again assuming that he cares for Kyle), it seems that it would be more risky for Duncan to tell Kyle than to keep him in the dark.

      • Klaus

Maybe betrayal was necessary for the spell. If Kyle had known, it would not have worked no matter how much he trusted Duncan.

        • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Yes, that could be true Klaus. But it doesn’t explain why Duncan left Kyle naked in the warehouse, why he didn’t explain to him why he had to do it…assuming that he has any feelings for Kyle. If Duncan didn’t give a shit, then that would explain it.

          • Maus Merryjest

Curse the super-specific nature of spells!

          • Klaus

He is working hard at convincing himself that he doesn’t care.

  • Klaus

If I understand the PP correctly, those “fringe benefits” were only at most a minot motivation. Maybe eve just a ruse to keep Laampros from looking for the real pupose of the deal.

For Duncan it is not so
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch2-page-47/

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I had forgotten about that page!

    • SofiaT

You have to keep in mind that Duncan was in self-flogging mode when he said that. He seemed as if he wanted Kyle to hate him (and at the same time wanted Kyle not to hate him… hence the “I’d explain but won’t for reasons” monologue. Talk about split personality…).

Whether it was because he wasn’t feeling very good about himself at the time and Kyle hating him was an extension of the self-flogging or because he wanted to make sure that Kyle (and possibly the whole of TYP team) would come after him for reasons that we’ve yet to see, is debatable. It could be both.

My conclusion is that Duncan overplayed his selfishness then just as Sircea is downplaying the “fridge benefits” and the deal with Laampros now.

I’d say the truth is somewhere in the middle.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Jimminy crickets, I never made that connection, even though it was sitting right in front of me. Yes, he was self-flagellating.
The silly part of my mind immediately went: yes, and now he can date Kyle again because they’re so well matched. Team Redilator will be so pleased. And the sensible part of my mind is going: nooo, no no no no, self-flagellation is not the type of mindset you want to be sharing and possibly amplifying in a feedback loop.

        • mogoskier

In another case I would say yes but Kyle doesn’t seem like the type to let Duncan do that to himself if he had forgiven him ,and Spooky and Paul would make damn sure Kyle was not self-flogging.

        • SofiaT

Well, I may be the Captain of the majestic ship (and occasionally submarine) The Redilator, but I know Duncan and Kyle are nowhere near having a “I forgive you, now lets move in together and buy a puppy” reunion any time soon.

That said, with enough suspension of disbelief and keeping in mind this is a highly hypothetical scenario (or, most accurately, a daydreaming fantasy) if Kyle and Duncan did get back together and Kyle was still in a “mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” mode, Duncan would cut that shit at the bud and wouldn’t let him blame himself. Remember that pretty much his whole monologue was a “you’re a fine young man and I wish it could be, but it’s not you, it’s me” speech.

  • Calvin Wilkinson

Gotta say, I’m loving those trees in the background; it’s so refreshing a scene change. And of course…THE SMOULDER!!! even though he doesn’t seem to be trying for a particularly demure look in this conversation, Anni has quite the slow motion eye sparkle and tilted face pose in panel 2. I’m absolutely melting over here :]

  • SofiaT

“Ground also trod by magic-users […] which created the damage in the first place”.

That “ground trod” that Sircea is trying to make appear a harmless and not-so-uncommon-occurrence, is deals that have been made in the past by various magic-users with the dev- *cough* sorry, I meant “a spiritual power”.

Which makes me think, who else made a deal with a demon, “treading the ground”? And would that demon still be Laampros or another king of Hell? Because there’s still the question of how Laampros impregnated a being (no way knowing if it was a human woman yet or something else) in this plane when he was supposedly bound in his own? (Unless Kyle wasn’t conceived in this world and was just left here. Which opens another can of worms/questions)

If she was a human, was Kyle’s mother one of those magic-users, like Sircea, “treading ground”? Or was she a pawn in a ritual, like Kyle was? If she was a willing participant, would she be a villain or revered as a saint?

    • Maus Merryjest

Wouldn’t it also be interesting if the tale of Faust happened to be fact in this reality?

    • silibub

That’s really interesting! The implication seems to be that there are several hell kings, and since humans have apparently been messing around with them since Biblical times, I’m sure others besides Laampros have made these kinds of pacts with humans. Maybe the “price” on some occasions is to bear that demon’s offspring, probably under rare and specific circumstances, and that’s what went on with Kyle’s mother and Laampros? In which case, I’m really curious what she asked for (if she wasn’t an unwilling participant) — that would probably determine whether she’s revered or reviled. I also want to know if she’s still around, and why she gave Kyle up if she is.

I really want more information about demons and magic users in general! I know earlier in this chapter Spooky said that “people always think they can outsmart [demons] in the end” because demons are arrogant, so I guess I wonder how/why said people have attempted to exploit their contracts. I suppose there always has to be some kind of exchange, and people might try to get out of holding up their end of the deal. (Unsuccessfully so far, I bet, since Spooky seems skeptical that Duncan and Sircea can pull this off.)

I still think it’s probably highly unusual that Duncan actually passed through the dimensional barrier to meet with Laampros. Spooky can summon demons to Earth, and that’s probably the most common method of meeting with one and making a deal — so maybe you only need to pay a personal visit to hell if you’re bargaining with a hell king or other significant power. Which would still mean that Kyle’s mother, if she conducted or was part of a ritual, most have gone to a lot of trouble. I’m really curious about the situation there, and I hope we get some helpful exposition when Laampros shows up.

(Sorry, a lot of that was pretty unrelated to what you were saying. I’m just really interested in the demons!)

      • SofiaT

As you may have noticed, most of my posts lately are questions, one on top of each other, with seemingly no answer. It’s because that’s pretty much the state my head is in while we’re waiting for more information. 😀

Which means I love that you get to take these questions as a starting point and release your own stream of consciousness, no apologies necessary. It’s something I tend to do anyway, with other people posts too. 🙂

Another thing that I question, is Kyle’s existence in the first place. Do demons like spawning as many children as possible in as many planes as possible? Is it a demonstration of power? Or is Kyle a rare hybrid, born by design, just in time so he would be at the precipice of adulthood just as these events start to unravel?

We know that Duncan and Sircea have been weaving their cunning plans for years… how long has Laampros been weaving his? Decades? Centuries?

        • silibub

Haha, I’m glad it doesn’t bother you! So many questions, and nothing we can do but wait. Plus I just read 50 Shades of Grey to finally see for myself what all the hype/anti-hype has been about and, uh…I just really need a mental palate cleanser now. Speculation it is!

Actually…demons spawning children on Earth could be part of a long plot to infiltrate. If Kyle’s powers plus the spell could penetrate the barrier between worlds, it might work with other offspring too, and maybe in a way that allows movement from hell to Earth instead of the other way around. If enough magic users on Earth are serving demons, possibly bound by their contracts, they could coordinate to use that spell on a lot of demon offspring at once and put a bunch of holes in the barrier, maybe rendering it useless. Assuming that’s even how it works. (And if not for the implication that all the other dark magic going on at the different ritual sites is the product of Sircea’s minions, I would think that maybe it’s the servants of demons trying to do just that, and Duncan and Sircea are trying to preempt them by opening a single gate with the keys to paradise.)

Earlier in the comic I figured that Kyle was pretty much one of a kind, but if his powers set off no warning bells about his heritage (except to Duncan), it could be that there are other meta-humans whose powers actually have demonic origins and no one even knows.

*sigh* These are really my best stabs at the nature of the “dire threat.” It’s weird how I simultaneously want to know everything already, yet also want to drag out the anticipation as long as possible. (Although I might be going just a little nuts already.)

          • SofiaT

With 2 and a half chapters still to go, I’d say the anticipation will drag out enough! We’ll probably have the answers to our questions in… oh, 2 or 3 years maybe?

And, damn girl. Why did you make your self go through the torture of reading that crap? Go read some Pride & Prejudice now, there’s nothing a little bit of Mr Darcy won’t fix (or you can go for Mr Rochester instead if you like dark and tortured).

          • silibub

I don’t know why I do these things. I told myself it was so I could form my own opinion but it was so much worse than I thought it would be. I’m definitely going to scour my shelves for a literary antidote – Austen and Bronte are excellent choices!

          • Terri Sutton

When I read that you have read “50 Shades of Grey” my immediate reaction was to tell you that you should find some good fanfiction stat! Preferably in a less insipid fandom. But SofiaT to the rescue.

          • Steven K.

            Try Storm Constantine’s “Wraethu” trilogy:
“The Enchantments of Flesh and Spirit”
“The Bewitchments of Love and Hate”
“The Fulfillments of Faith and Desire”
            – Especially if you like Sci-Fi/Fantasy and alternative sexuality.

          • Klaus

Was Kyle’s ancestry a necessary part of the plan? On this page PP confirms that they have been plotting for a long time. Yet about a week ago she said that “What you suspected does at least seem possible“. I doubt that all this work would have been for naught if Kyle had turned out to be a garden variety mutant.

          • Irishyankee

Hi! I just recently found this site, and am enjoying this story immensely! The writing is gripping, the artwork is stunning, and the story is engrossing!
Now, my random observation. PP has said that she has been working on this plan for years: How many? Maybe 18 years, 9 months, perhaps? Could she be Kyle’s birth Mother?

          • SofiaT

Welcome to the fandom, Irishyankee! 🙂

Hm, I don’t think she’s his mother; Duncan said that if Kyle wasn’t gay, Sircea would have handled the seduction part of the plan. I know they’re villains and all but that’s something I don’t think even Sircea would do. o.O

          • Irishyankee

Thank you, Sofia! My thought is Incest would not be inconcievable with a villian, if it was what they wanted “for the Greater Good”, or even for perhaps…revenge?

          • Steven K.

            Agreed!

          • Klaus

If so, she would know who his parents are. What Duncan suspects here http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch1-page-20/ must then be something else.

          • SofiaT

I’m always amazed when I look back to old pages and see the evolution of the drawings. All the protagonists have now “settled” into their facial features.

(P.S: I think it’s almost certain by now that what Duncan suspected back then was that Kyle was part-demon and hailed from Laampros’ Hell realm. Not sure yet if they suspected/knew he was Laampros’ offspring or if that part took them by surprise, but the rest seems like a safe bet)

          • Klaus

He may still not know. He was curled up in pain some distance away when L called Kyle my son, and showed no reaction. He may not have noticed.

          • SofiaT

            Very true.
And that could be part of the advantage Spooky spoke of.
Not only do TYP have a Prince of Hell on their side, but it’s very likely they’ll catch The Terrible Duo by surprise with him.

          • Steven K.

Oh – was just stating something to that effect – I should have read further down. But yeah – I agree.

          • Steven K.

Yes. I don’t think we have unequivocally been told/shown that Duncan knew about Kyle’s relationship with Laampros ahead-of-time. Furthermore, I’m not even quite sure that Duncan overheard what Laampros told Kyle, as he was some distance away, and wasn’t Duncan nursing his wound at the time? I don’t think Duncan necessarily overheard Laampros’ intimate comments to Kyle, or noticed that kiss. Laampros asks Duncan if “this” (Kyle) what what he used to cross the dimensional barrier, then he walks a certain distance over to Kyle and fondles him a bit then speaks to him, tells him not to cry or something like that, mentions he’s his son, then kisses him. Ironically, probably the most sincerely tender attention Kyle has received from another male in his adult life. My memory may be a bit off, but that’s how it seems to me. I get t he impression Laampros was speaking rather more quietly and personally to Kyle at that point,

          • Welcome, Irishyankee! Glad to have you with us! 🙂

And those are good questions… 😉

          • Irishyankee

Thank you, Alex. I am looking forward to the rest of this journey!

          • Steven K.

Well, I hope not, since Duncan tells Kyle while he has him bound that if Kyle were heterosexual, it would have been PP that would have been involved in his seduction.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Oh yeah, good point.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Now I’m imagining her realizing that they need Kyle for their ritual and going, “Shit, where did I leave that kid?”

          • silibub

That’s an aspect of the plan that confuses me. Presumably they had some other way of getting to Laampros before they found out about Kyle — I wonder why they even altered their plan to include him, unless using him was the most efficient or reliable way of crossing over. Otherwise their options might have been limited to a complex summoning ritual to bring Laampros to Earth in order to bargain with him, which is incredibly risky for a lot of reasons — like not being able to bind him properly, or send him back for that matter.

          • Condolences dear Silibub. I made the same 50 Shades mistake. Sophia’s advice is perfect.

Here is the best panacea ever, from Tab at Discord:

          • *Hisss* Sili, why would you even touch that book. I only heard a couple chapters as an audiobook and that was more than enough to hurt my brain.. but at least I still didn’t touch the actual book 😉

        • Klaus

Some deoms make long time plans. Others take existence as it comes, one century at a time.

      • Klaus

Spooky got to hell without any work at all on his part.

        • silibub

Good point — my guess about that is, if the barrier is weakening, he got caught in a point of dimensional overlap and passed into hell that way. Although he seems to think he was sent there purposefully…I wonder if he knows that for sure, or if he doesn’t realize there are weaknesses in the barrier and therefore assumes the only way he could have wound up in hell is if someone put him there.

  • purplefoxglove

Ha, I figured out what that glass-thingy is! Or rather, my subconscious did. It’s a giant hot tub, and Alex is going to give interviews in it.

…hm, that’s strange. It made so much sense in my dream last night. Most of the forum people where there, too, and Chris even brought champagne.

    • If it was Veuve Clicquot Brut, then that sounds prescient… 🙂

  • davefragments

do you realize that accidentally dropping bubble wrap on the floor of your garage and then running over it with your car can crate quit a racket of loud pops. Really startlingly loud pops. Do that at 7am before you get coffee or sugar in you and it’s like dude, call the paramedics I’m gagging on a spoon, time silly.

  • You know, despite PP and her “months“of “hammering out” details via “intermediaries” for a contract Laampros “cannot break, all I can think about how she is handling this is: http://youtu.be/3LVXjB_VUfk because I mean that contract with Laampros might sound good and all that, but ALL THE LOOPHOLES. There are so MANY things Laampros can do that wouldn’t violate the contract…

What I have learned from various books, movies, and ESPECIALLY D&D….if you really want something (that pretty much amounts to a wish) you word it extremely carefully and do your best to cover any and all possible negative outcomes.

For example, PP and Duncan get the Americas as theirs, Laampros gets all the rest. However, they didn’t say Laampros couldn’t attack the Americas and leave them radioactive dust to rule over.

They agreed on terms and a price, but maybe she didn’t dedicate enough attention to the details to think of possible consequences or “side affects”.
Too over confident in her own abilities that she forgets to be as careful as she should.

    • silibub

Yeah, I remember reading the hell scene and thinking, “Is this seriously how you’re phrasing your terms? This is going to be a disaster.” But maybe what Sircea means is that all those details have been sorted out in the contract proper, and the meeting between Duncan and Laampros was to formally seal the deal — Duncan confirms the gist of the request, Laampros puts his mark on Duncan to make it binding, and off they go. Laampros was already aware that the “fringe benefits” would extend to Sircea, too, for instance, which suggests he was already familiar with what they were asking of him. Presumably the formal contract is far more carefully constructed than Duncan made it seem…at least I hope so, or these two are so boned.

      • But either way, there is still a “didn’t read the fine print” feel to their deal…

Even then, those “details” were handled by “intermediaries”. I would have made sure all the details were clear on all sides once meeting in person. A “just to be clear” and ” just so we are all on the same page” type of thing. You can never be too careful with these things.

        • silibub

True, there’s still a careless vibe to this that I don’t like. Makes me want to get in there and knock their heads together.

          • Though it would be interesting if, despite all the loopholes they don’t get screwed over, as long as it is good and works story wise….

    • stickfigurefairytales

This reminds me of that fantastic Marvel Adventures comic where Dr. Strange has to fight this demon-type guy who’s constrained by a really complicated contract (made specifically to make it hard for him to return to Earth/take over the world), which includes the following stipulations:

      – Must return to Earth in the form of a rodent
      – Cannot teleport into a ballerina’s house
      – Cannot use magic against housecats
      – Must eat hot dogs on Wednesdays
      – Cannot draw mustaches on wall posters
      – No casting of spells while dressed like a school girl
      – No wearing black shoes with green shoelaces
      – Cannot encase a grasshopper in peanut-butter

      • Very important conditions. Yes, very important. ^_^

        • stickfigurefairytales

He can also only summon the Mindless Ones while standing next to a red convertible.

  • silibub

Clearly I have a lot of questions about what’s going on, but reading the page again this really nags at me: who came up with this plan in the first place? Was it a joint effort, like they became aware of a threat, Duncan got the deal with the devil idea, and Sircea helped him refine and implement it? Because he was the one to figure out the source of Kyle’s powers, and so I’d assume it was his idea to use Kyle to get to Laampros. Or was Sircea the one to suggest bargaining with Laampros in the first place? Because the way she says she’s repeatedly assured Duncan that he’s not selling his soul makes it seem like Duncan has been reluctant to go this route from the beginning, which doesn’t quite square with it being his idea. As for the role of magic-users in creating the threat, I get the sense that they’ve had this discussion/argument already, so we’ll see where it goes.

I guess what I’m getting at is, if this goes wrong, will one of them blame the other? Or are they really casting their lots together?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Either way, I’m incredibly amused at the thought of one of them going up to the other and saying, “Okay, I’ve got this great idea…”

      • silibub

One of them comes up with it spontaneously in the shower and shows up on the other’s doorstep with wet hair and a manic look: “Seriously, this is foolproof. And there will be no emotional investment at all!”

        • Same shower, wet hair, look and approach:

“Seriously, do you have $40, a roll of duct tape, some cotton balls and a milkshake?? ‘Cause I have an awesome idea that is a GUARANTEED winner!

          • silibub

I don’t know about team Silver Fox, but I’d be intrigued by that pitch.

          • I know… it’s the duct tape. It does it EVERY time. 😀

  • *Crawls out of bed*
Time to camp for the next page in this scene, a scene where I every detail as always is something to consider – both the said and unsaid… but waited so long to figure out what’s going on and we’re finally getting some clues 🙂

I once had field mice in a tractor and my brother’s kids (2 boys, 2 girls) and my Mom visiting for a weekend. Well, after we start dthe tractor and the field mice ran away from the babies, I heard a door that night and one nice was making sure the babies weren’t dead — building them a nest out of gras and all that.
I never told her that if she wasn’t there, I would have “ended” my field mouse problem with a rake.

      • Bubble wrap, cover the hole with bubble wrap! Yeah!

    • silibub

I had a mouse in the apartment I used to live in. I never did catch him because I couldn’t figure out how he was getting in. I stand in awe of your mouse-catching prowess!

    • Miss Wolf?

      Was the mouse… DELICIOUS?

      • Oh Chris :-p The way it looked at me for a final second, I ALMOST miss the little bugger.

        • Stay strong… he’ll be back by morning to visit your adorable self. 😀

          • 0_0 LIES.. all lies..
Well, he better not bring a friend.

  • … and just like that comments grew silent. Is there something in the air? Is it coming, do we all feel it?

…*whispers* Is it the presence of Alex we silently feel?

    • silibub

It’s like when there’s a sudden lull in a restaurant.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I got distracted by tumblr.

      • THE DARK SIDE

      • silibub

Same! And then I clicked over to a story on r/nosleep so I’m in reddit hell now.

      • tumblr is the current reason why I am going to have 3-10 colonies of bats….

        • stickfigurefairytales

Did you see the new species of bat they discovered?!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Er, to clarify, tumblr did not discover the new species of bat. It was a scientist guy.

          • They are just too cute!!!!!!!

        • davefragments

you have pet bats? How Cool!

          • I wish, but when I eventually become the evil genius I always knew I could be, I am going to have controlled life like areas for different types of bats…..maybe even train them….and the rooms for the cats will not be near them
……I am going to need huge lair….

          • davefragments

my neighbors have pet horses, pet donkeys, dogs (to call a dog a pet is redundant), several cats (no cat is ever a pet) and I just watch the squirrels bounce around the trees and the deer (bambi has been born) eat my plants.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Well, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m suffering badly from it being the second week of semester, and I’m busy clubbing to death an endless horde of inter-library loans requests before they overwhelm and eat me.

      • silibub

I always figured working in a university library would be hectic — that sounds really stressful.

      • stickfigurefairytales

What is the policy if someone doesn’t return their ILL item? Do you get to hunt them down and pry it from their cold dead hands?

        • Saxon_Brenton

Nothing anywhere near so drastic. There are fines. If the fines get large enough ($30) they block borrowing, or ($50) exam results/re-enrollment/graduation. And from personal experience I can assure you that it is AMAZING how the threat of withheld exam results can focus someone’s attention.

    • Sapfo

Sorry, a crow distracted me with promises of cakes for breakfast …. or was it about the upcoming books?

I am not working on my big as “good morning”-comment. It will be ut after this comment.

    • Feeling a little meh. I think it was from all the crap I ate over the birthday weekend.

      • Sapfo

*Holding up a cup of soothing tea to AJ*

Oh poor babbie. Tummy acting up on you dear?

  • Sapfo

*Stumbles in, take a look around*
    I need tea….. o.O

    (My big ass comment XD)

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Mmm…tea…

  • Sapfo

Been watching some of Onos art making.

  • silibub

Is “Sircea” actually her birth name? It’s so thematically apt, it makes me wonder if she changed it at some point to suit her profession. Unless her parents/guardians were magic users as well, which is an interesting thought…

    • stickfigurefairytales

“So, what are your career hopes for your daughter?”

      “Sorceress.”

    • Well if she is a priestess, she might have been given to some group as a young girl? Or maybe it’s a generational thing, her mother was a member etc.

      • silibub

That would be interesting…at any rate I hope we get some backstory for Duncan and Sircea, whether in the comic itself (if it fits in) or through extras in the printed books.

        • I would LOVE to have a backstory for those two. Talk about awesome.

      • silibub

Ohhh Morticia Addams. Early crush of mine!

  • davefragments

She smelled of gardenias and sandalwood. He was hot, musky, his manhood straining–a foot-long submarine looking for her port of entry. Her hands slipped down his six-pack abs. She straddled his right leg, leaning against him.

    • silibub

I have water up my nose because of you — you don’t understand how hard I’m laughing. foot-long submarine!

      • davefragments

They aren’t quite on the same, uh whatever.

(that’s one of my sillier similes)

      • Librarican

I now have the song yellow submarine stuck in my head….

      • stickfigurefairytales

Omfg, what if it’s making those submarine sonar sounds?!

    • LOL.. oh dear… and it even touch one of my small pet peeves.

Amazing how many dicks there’s 9-13 inches long in various stories. 13 inches.. that’s over a foot – oh, and as thick as a beer can of course.
You read a story that seems very promising and then *WHAM* .. meat stick enough to whack you cold or have you run for the hills if you can escape in time.

      • davefragments

I don’t write love scenes, I write comedy in its place.

      • silibub

Right? Like okay, I’m no dick wizard, but I’m pretty sure that would just be painful for everybody.

        • I know there’s really a few really huge in size out there, but I honestly struggle to see the ‘necessity’ of the guy being that size. When an average dick is 5-6½ inches.
I recently came across a story I liked where this was happening, and I wrote this as a feedback – I just had to – and he, the author, changed it so now they’re ‘only’ 7-9½ inches xD

          • silibub

A solid win for humanity! Good work!

        • CH

Okay, I’ve been laughing over the whole thread but “dick wizard” gets special mention. Mostly because I’m seeing the sorcerer’s apprentice sequence from Fantasia with Mickey replaced with, well, a dick.

        • Now I need to add a dick wizard to this story…

      • Klaus

“I slid my full eleven inches into him seductively.” For some reason this sentence from a story I read on the web has stuck in my mind,

        • At least it was slid in .. seductively 😉
When it’s just shoved it.. oh dear lord.

        • davefragments

Another of her lovers was Julio, a big strapping Latino. She decided she didn’t like him so she kicked him in the jewels. They flew so high they now call him the “Julio Positioning System”

    • silibub

She straddled his right leg, leaning against him…and felt a hardness digging into her thigh even through the material of her boot.

“My my, is that a dagger in my leg or are you just happy to…no. That’s a dagger. God damn it, Duncan, we’ve talked about this.”

      • davefragments

One of her lovers suffered a slight wound with an electric depilatory wire. . . just a “slight” amputation

        • silibub

No wonder she’s going for someone more durable this time around.

  • WarGoddess

Just popping in to say “hi Tom!” Lol, if you haven’t seen Deadpool test footage yet on youtube and you like Deadpool, you’re missing out. It’s hilarious!! “¡Hola! Me llamo picina de la muerta. There’s no easy way to say this…I’m pregnant Trevor.” Comedy gold. Anywho, gotta go to sleep soon, so I prolly won’t make it to this update. And happy belated birthday you guys that Alex mentioned! I was such a derp and didn’t read that part earlier. My bad. 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

Good night, and thanks for dropping by!

    • Goodnight! Glad to see you even if for a moment.

    • Cydney Sabin

It took me a while to get what “picina de la muerta” meant. I got it. I giggled.

  • Sapfo

If anyone reads The Fox Sister. the new page is up.

    http://www.thefoxsister.com/

  • silibub

Getting tired…someone want to come slap me awake?

    • Terri Sutton

I assume you have already tried slapping yourself.

      • silibub

Yeah, but I’m always expecting it.

    • Since my head nearly hit my desk a few minutes ago, it probably shouldn’t be me. Pills are making me sleepy. I’m so going back to bed after the page is up.

      • silibub

I always get an adrenaline burst after an update and wind up staying awake way longer than I should!

        • I’m waiting for that adrenaline rush to kick in 😉

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah, I’m starting to fade too.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I need to go put some laundry away – maybe the page will go up once I leave? (I’ll be back, though)

  • Sapfo

I am going to make a daring move and eat some breakfast now.

  • *refresh, refresh*

Thought the page would be up by now. Still not feeling well from yesterday. Don’t know how long I’m going to last even though I just got here.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I hope you feel better soon!

  • http://youtu.be/EzU7yykgfXA (still cannot believe this was in a kids movie)

So which TYP character would you sing this song to? AND ONLY ONE!!!

(like people don’t already know my answer is Mitch)

    • Spooky!!! At least right at this moment but that could change at any moment.

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’ve got to say Spooky for me too.

    • Steven K.

Can I be in the middle of a Kyle-Mitch sandwich?

      • Only one Steven. ^_^

        • Steven K.

Hmmm….kind of a toss-up then at this point. But, if Mitch turns out to be of the heterosexual persuasion, then of course it would have to be Kyle.

          • Eeny meeny miney moe has always been a tried and true decider for me when I cannot make up my mind ^_^

          • or dice, I also use dice when I cannot make up my mind

    • silibub

      Oh…*waves hand vaguely*…you know…

  • Just letting y’all know, I’m here and we’re working on the page. Hopefully up shortly, but I should know more in a few minutes…

  • Page up in 5 minutes…

  • Sapfo
  • Sai

So do these two hang out together because they’re both witty, inexplicably sexy old people?
