  • Sapfo

Kiss the Kyle and get the prince.
Now Alex can sleep (I hope)

I love the lineart! It is so great!

    • Another for your collection 🙂

      • Sapfo

it been to long since I was could really hunt. I am glad 😀

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Hmmm, I was about to go to bed, glad the page is up.

  • SofiaT

    Black and White? I like!

  • “There will come a time in your life when you lose something that
matters to you. You’ll fight for it and you won’t win. But what really
matters isn’t the war you’re waging, it’s that you don’t lose the person
you are in the midst of the battle.”

    J. Sterling,

    The Perfect Game

  • Serious business is on.. and I like a b/w peek on how a page look before coloring 🙂

  • SofiaT

Is Tsunami being so childish that he is making jibes on Spooky’s professional ability now?

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

      He doesn’t look too happy.

    • silibub

Yeah, like…let’s not forget which one out of the two of you has actually been in a fight there, Gordo.

      • SofiaT

I think the implication is that “if Spooky can’t manage to find them, maybe he isn’t right about Kyle being an asset in a fight”

    • I was just wondering about that. He appears to be getting a little pouty there.

  • silibub

You’re reuniting me with my wife on the next page?! *screams into hands* *circles Tuesday twelve times on calendar* *makes appointments just so I can cancel them and clear my schedule*

    • SofiaT

I need to prepare emotionally to see Duncan!! 🙁

      • silibub

Let’s keep fingers crossed for an early upload, then. Silver Fox appreciation team, ASSEMBLE

        • SofiaT

          *Fistbumps silibub*

    • Oh, you’ll get some extra special Sircea time in the next scene, my friend… 😉

      • silibub

Given your notorious sneakiness, I’m both excited and slightly afraid. *points to eyes, then back at Alex*

        • “Excited and afraid” — The Platinum Priestess wanted me to let you know that that is the appropriate reaction. I think her words were “Oh, I like this one.”

And then there was this look in her eyes and a razor thin smile that gave me a little chill…

          • silibub

            Hot.

    • David Welbourn

I imagine they’ve been trying on new outfits for their coronation as monarchs of the world, western-half. Oh, and maybe getting a cake made with their favourite biscuits, just because they can.

  • Mitch ^_^ ….of course he isn’t going to be left out ^_^

  • Steven K.

Even w/out the color, Kyle’s hair looks extra-fire-y in the last panel – like little licks of flame lifting off his head.

    • EyeDontNo

      Who’s licking Kyle’s hair again?

      • SKB

*stops licking and looks at EyeDontNo* What? 😛

  • Scene change coming up, eh? *Sharpens the pitchfork*

  • mogoskier

YAY Duncan back. Awkward/ angry lovers reunion.

  • silibub

Ahh, well, I have to go to bed. But first I’m going to take another minute to really appreciate that “Bitch, please” look everyone’s giving Tsunami in the long panel, there.

…So good. Okay, goodnight everyone, and thanks Alex/Adam/Vero for the excellent page!

    • You’re very welcome. Thank you to everyone who stuck around for camping! 🙂

  • Sheana Knight

Gordon needs to swallow his pride and suck it up. He’s starting to get on my nerves.

    • Sunfire

      Amen!

    • Phyre Storm

      Only just starting?

      • Sheana Knight

I meant to say he’s really getting on my nerves. Lol

        • Phyre Storm

Mine too. He’s being such an immature douche that I’m questioning Commander’s judgement in making him her second in command (which she may also be doing at this point.) Spooky seems like a much better choice.

          • Keneu

Well, there may be a reason behind why is Gordon 2nd in command other than being an adult.

I think one of the roles of a good second in command should be to question the leader *sometimes*, not to be a jerk, but to reach the best decision for the team. Imagine if Amanda was wrong and nobody questioned her. Granted, he needs to stop sulking and learn to admit his mistakes.

Besides, since Spooky is a magic user and he has been in hell, he may not be the best of choices for the team to get approval of the government.

          • Sheana Knight

Yeah you think Spooky would be second.

  • Adam Black

wow first time disqus loaded in 2 weeks.

But the internet has gone black &white on me!

    • SofiaT

      It’s a conspiracy.

      • Adam Black

        Platinum Priestess ?

I bets its the jerkoff Annihalator, stealing everyone’s color to dye his gray hair. He would do anything not look over-the-hill/

        • SofiaT

          Over the hill??

          The Silver Fox???

          • Adam Black

Please, He’d send the whole world to hell when his Viagra stops working. Whoops! You werent supposed to learn that until next page. Sorry @alexwoolfson:disqus

          • Saxon_Brenton

Uhm, Sofia, the whole reason that we’re in this mess is because Annihilator started to feel the creak in his bones when he got out of bed in the morning, freaked out at the idea of getting over the hill, and decided to do something desperate to fix it.

          • SofiaT

I was referring to sex appeal.

You can say what you want about Duncan, but dying his hair is not something he needs.

          • Saxon_Brenton

Ah. Gotcha No need to dye his hair, no need to read ‘Making Puppy Eyes For Dummies’.
(At least, not yet. That may be part of the problem: The anticipatory dread…)

          • SofiaT

Not sure what’s the deal with his super-powers or with him freaking out about old age (post-mid-life crisis??), but The Fox still has it and probably with still have it for years to come.

Like that old whiskey commercial with Sean Connery put it: “Some age, others mature”.

          • silibub

Honestly I’m still distressed that part of their deal with Laampros is to regain youth. On the one hand I get it, but on the other I’m like, “NO! God, why?! Just stay the very attractive fine-wine age you are! How could you do this to meeee?”

          • SofiaT

            I know!!!

It’s like seeing George Clooney in movies from his youth. It just doesn’t seem right!

      • Adam Black

        a repeated one too

    • Sapfo

Hmmm! It looks fine to me. Must be only you .

      • Adam Black

yes, my computer is awful, even disqus gray is washed out

        • Sapfo

          Bad computer, Bad!
Even your Avatar looks a bit gray.

  • Must say it’s a treat to see Adam’s work bare, just all the naked lines. (Um….puns not intended)

    • SofiaT

      *nods furiously*

I especially like Amanda’s stand on panel two.
The stark lines make her look that much more badass.

    • Adam Black

      im sure…unintended

  • Sapfo

I know that it was internet problem that made you post the lineart page. But Alex you should know that this makes me a happy fan. This is something I have been wanting to see for a long time.

Ever since I became more drawn into various webcomics, and since I have seen several Livestreamings with different artists. I have somehow fallen in love with the process of making a comic page.

So thank you Alex, Adam och Veronica. I will save this page just to see how it looks when Veronica done her magic.

    • That was pretty much the first thing I did after seeing the page – saving it on my computer. Did it fast to be sure it wouldn’t be changed before I got it 🙂

      • Sapfo

        It is precious 🙂

    • Heh. Well, I’m glad it turned out to be a treat. 🙂

I will admit that it still feels like a little bit of magic to me to see a page of script turn into rough thumbnail sketches then turn into finished pencils and then rendered colors and then finally, the finished, lettered page.

      • Sapfo

I would love to see it all. And it is magic, truste me it is.

      • Elrohir

Well of COURSE it’s magic. That’s what you Wizard types are known for! 🙂
It certainly is magic for many of us on the reader side!

  • Jen Roberts

    *fangirling so hard*

  • Refresh your page. WIP color version is up now. 🙂

    • Sapfo

Alex, I want to thank you for putting up the lineart. It was so great and I am going to look into details on the both of them now.

      • SofiaT

I may or may not have taken a printscreen 😀

        • I right-clicked and saved it in my documents hella fast. Since this is supposedly a WIP color page, I now also saved that so I can compare it what should be the final page.
Details in several stages are awesome to watch.

    • SofiaT

The page is perfect! (Meaning, what WIP??)

      • This is actually very close. Vero was able to get a second pass to me just at the last second. But there’s still some minor clean-up here and there. Extra points if you notice the differences when the final is uploaded. 😉

Glad you like what you see, though!

      • Elrohir

@disqus_P2huBPd9nS:disqus the acronym of WIP is frequently used to mean “Work In Progress”. I’ve most commonly seen it used in manufacturing systems; but in Alex’s case I believe he is referring to the fact that a final version with minor changes is on its way. Hence, the current posted version would be a “Work In Progress”.
**Of course, it’s completely possible that in “Alex Speak” — which is the language of literary Wizards — it means something completely different. We Elves are quite aware of the dangers of this thing known as “language”. 🙂 **

        • SofiaT

          Heh, thanks, @disqus_E1BJEAP7bC:disqus.
But I know what WIP means 🙂

What I meant, was the page doesn’t like like work-in-progress, it’s already perfect and can’t see how it could be any more so.

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

    very colorful now.

  • Adam Black

I was not expecting that. Nobody warned me

I had to keep reloading the page for comments, and the color-flash gave me cone damage. I’m not sure who I’m supposed to sue.

    • Sapfo

Did you read the warning? There was a warning. So you could sue yourself for not reading.

      • SofiaT

I want to make a joke about Americans and law-suits now 😛

        • Sapfo

that sueing culture is fun to joke about.

          • Adam Black

Until we sue you. I will own all your KIlts

          • Sapfo

Just remember that if you sue me in Sweden and you lose. You have to stand for all the costs. All of them.
            More Kilts for me XD

          • Adam Black

Thanks for the warning… I was going to be nice and file suit in um …Swedenborgistania , but have fun commuting to court in Boston

          • Adam Black

Thats your capital right? eh doesnt matter I’d probably end up sueing you in Switzerland, by mistake.

          • Sapfo

Unfortunately, this falls under your own responsibility. You should have read the warning before you could read it.

And I am thinking of suing you for not knowing the capital of Sweden?! 😉

          • Adam Black

You cant sue me for that. I was a minor. You have to join my class action suit against the education establishment ,for failure to teach.

          • Elrohir

Well…if we were talking the “cultural capital” of Sweden that would be Lund, correct? 🙂

I WAS going to make a joke about it being in Älmhult but I value my life. 🙂
But I guess from an “Administrivia” standpoint it would have to be Stockholm. But if the lawsuit drags on into the winter Adam Black better dress warm. If you think Boston is cold and damp in the winter then to quote the song, “you ain’t seen nothing yet”!

          • Sapfo

I do love Lund it is a nice city, and I have both studied there and worked there.

I do like Älmhult but for a whole diffrent reason XD

As for winter, just for that I really hope for a very cold one. One that maked the train stops and nothing works. 😉

        • Adam Black

sure if you want to be #2, go ahead. We call it the “American Dream” ( OK #3 )

      • Adam Black

….. “I had to keep reloading the page for comments” I had no warning till it was too late.

    • Adam Black

My soundcard isnt going to turn on full blast when I reload, is it? That plane looks loud.

      • Sapfo

Are there any warnings for sounds? o.O

        • Adam Black

          You tell me

          • Sapfo

You are scaring me Mr Black. Maybe there is, or maybe there is not. Do I dare to relaod?

          • Adam Black

            cover your ears

          • Sapfo

            Will do!

  • It looks like Fluke is about to Gibbs smack Gordy. Wonder if it would help. I’m always a fan of the Gibbs smack knocking someones brain back into place. 🙂

    • I think Fluke’s look of disbelief over what Tsu say takes the prize. However in this case a Gibbs smack seems appropriate as that.

      • I love Fluke’s look in that panel. It’s just so expressive, expletives and all. Actually, they all look like they’re about to reach up and pop the back of his head.

    • Pikinanou

Ah, you’re right, there’s nothing a good Gibbs slap behind the head can’t fix 🙂
But they should save it for Annihilator and Platinium Priestess

      • Those two do need their brains knocked back into proper alignment! 🙂

    • Sunfire

Love the Gibbs-smack! lol Have had to deploy it myself a few times :p

      • Gibb smack is the ultimate power of good. 😀

  • karmakat

why are you being such a douche tsunami…. are you THAT SCARED?

  • Mary Klemzak

    Fluke’s expression:Dude are you F-ing kidding me??

I’m not into NCIS but I know what a Gibs Smack is. It’s epic. It’s usually one guy too!

Commander, it never hurts to ask! That’s why she’s Commander! If she’s not on a list of powerful women in comics, then she should be. At least top 5!

Second panel, Spooks has the most swaggity swag that ever swagged.

  • Adam Black

    @alexwoolfson:disqus , I think I’m having technical problems.

I realize this is a free service, but I know you care about quality.

Ive reloaded 15 times, and this video is *still frozen*

    • Sapfo

Sorry Adam, but the “video” will be stuck until next Wednesday. I know it is slow to buffering up. But it is worth the wait.

      • Adam Black

That cant be true, it moved 1 frame already

  • purplefoxglove

Aw, I missed the lineart 🙁

Also, can you say D-E-T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-I-O-N? I think that’s the perfect description for Amanda’s expression in panel one. That woman is ready to kick some ass! ^^

  • AseretZone

I must’ve missed something, ’cause there’s no “video” or “sound” or anything. :/ Anyways, about the page. First of all, Amanda, you look SMASHING in those clothes. XD And your poses are just so cool, I think Captain America would be jealous of your speech just now. And that hair! How do you have such awesome hair?

I’m gonna stop gushing over Amanda now and look at the others. Poses and expressions are superb, as always, and I’m surprised she even asked Gordon. XD He’s clearly in, he’s just worried about their Baby Flybear. XD

YAY for getting back to his magical cheerios to find they’ve practically arrived! Shame that they couldn’t have a “all for one and one for all” moment, but Mitch IS still flying the plane. XD They’ll just have to make do with voicing agreements.

Uh oh. Are we gonna see Anni and PP looking younger? After all,the pact DID say “eternal youth”.

    • Cman65

Now if I was a King of HELL and you asked for eternal youth I would give it to you but if I made you you youger that you were when your powers first came in you would be a little baby for ever

      • AseretZone

Hm, but I’m sure making him unable to rule would break the pact or something. Ruling over America WAS part of the pact.

    • The first 15-20mins the page was up, it was in black and white until Alex got this version you see now uploaded. The video and sound thing is just readers having fun with each other 🙂

      • AseretZone

Oh, okay. I was worried I missed something really cool. 🙂 Thanks!

  • Saxon_Brenton

I also seem to have missed the B&W fill in art. Ah well…
Lovely to see Commander trying to emphasise that they’re not intending to fight, but they need to be ready for it if they need to – and then the guys completely missing the point and getting all frisky again.

  • Sunseahl Silverfall

    “luck on our side” ?!?!

Who needs luck… you have FLUKE! 😛

    • Sunfire

      *ba-dum-TISH!*

  • Nate

You know, I have no reason other than my gut, but I’m starting to worry about Tsunami. The body language in panel 6 isn’t helping me trust his loyalties.

    • SofiaT

It’s not his loyalty I question, it’s his judgment.
Even after both Spooky and Amanda have spoken their minds, he’s still brooding. I can understand why he worries but acting like a petulant child is the opposite of a good soldier, of a good troop leader.

      • I wonder if he became deputy leader only by virtue of age, or because Spooky refused the position. He’s not exactly brimming over with leadership skills.

        • SofiaT

          I’m sure there’s a story there…

          • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm… Now I’m wondering if this might be why Tsunami was rejected from the intern trainee teams and ended up with the rejects on the Young Protectors. Nothing to do with whether he powers being potentially too dangerous (as Fluke was accused of being) but having a psychological problem.

          • SofiaT

Hmmm… Kyle was rejected for his past (burning down the house), which left him with some emotional baggage. Fluke, his power is unpredictable so that must have played a big part, but I assume the other teams might have worried about the emotional ramifications of such a bizarre super-power too… I haven’t seen a downside to Fluke’s or Flyboy’s powers so far, so it’s safe to assume it’s their emotional/mental states that have been deemed a liability. Otherwise why would anyone reject Flyboy? He’s young, but he could still have earned an internship somewhere else.

And what about Amanda? What caused her to put together this team? Was she some sort of “reject” as well? We know she has had formal military training so what’s the deal there? Did she choose to create the team of was she forced to “choose”?

          • Saxon_Brenton

The questions about Commander are particularly important, but at this point I feel we don’t have enough information to do much more than throw random ideas out. (Unlike with Spooky, where – although I may be wrong – I’m happy enough to have my headcannon shaped by the speculation from the bonus comic – that Spooky feels a sense of social obligation to help other troubled youngsters as Amanda helped him).

I would dearly love for it to be the case that Commander simply has the innate perception and wisdom to recognise that *someone* has to help ‘troubled superpowered youth’ to keep them from becoming a Junior Brotherhood of Evil, or suchlike. It would fit with what she did say in the BC. But I feel there may be a gap in her history, and we’re missing something. Gah! The nerdboy in me is keenly anticipating the trading cards from the kickstarter.

          • SofiaT

All I can do is throw around questions, no clue about the answers either!

And, needless to say, it’s driving me nuts.

          • Cydney Sabin

Here’s my thoughts: Kyle had emotional issues stemming from his guilt about burning down his foster parents’ home. Paul’s powers are (in the minds of the adults, at least) unpredictable. Gordon has some sort of psychological issue (possibly some sort of insecurity) that, while it seems small, could mess with the cohesiveness of the adult teams, which could jeopardize the mission. Spooky turned down the position, possibly because he knew what Amanda had planned. Mitch was too young for the adults to take him seriously as a candidate. Amanda decided that she was going to take this rag-tag group of “rejects” and turn them into a team worth having. Or so my head-canon thinks.

          • Elrohir

I think I’m with you on this one Saxon.
“One does not simply let superpower talent develop on its own.” said in his best Boromir voice
Even if they didn’t turn completely evil the chances for them to injure somebody while they figure out control is way too high. Or, that the unrestrained use of their power may in fact turn them “evil”.
A common mistake that adults make is to use a fixed age as a “you’re not ready to train/learn yet” cut off. It is never too early for any youngling to learn to be responsible for actions or behavior that can harm another (same could be said for a number of adults I know who seem to have skipped over that lesson).
Allowing wild talents or powers to develop without training and some sort of moral compass or structure is a common theme for disaster in a lot of my favorite fiction (I think it was Klaus that mentioned “Heritage of Hastur” the other day, MZB made quite a point of what happens when the Comyn develop power without training).
So, to ignore training a power/talent because they are too young is a flawed strategy in my opinion. To do so with males between the ages of 13 and 25 is so flawed as to court real disaster.
So I like your thought process around the Commander’s wisdom/reasoning.
**Side note: it seems statistically unlikely that there are only male super powers coming into the world needing training. I suspect that at some point Alex is going to have us encounter another training group or a young wild power/talent that happen to have one or more young females as an interaction for TYP. Mind you, I am notoriously bad at forecasting the twists and turns of the labyrinth that is the mind of our Author. So don’t laugh too loud at me if I turn out to be completely off base.**

          • SKB

It may be statistically unlikely if it’s not genetic. If it’s genetic, and a sex-linked mutation, then it’s going to be much more common in men than women, which would explain the dearth of female supers so far.

          • Danny

That could be very interesting. Say the hypothetical mutation travels in the X chromosome: any male with a mutated X chromosome could develop super powers, but a female might need both X chromosomes to be mutated to develop powers. And, to go a step further, what if the double X in her genes makes her powers somewhat stronger, because the mutation is reinforced?

          • SKB

It would definitely be very interesting if it was an X-chromosomal mutation.

It means a super father who sires a daughter is almost (barring an unusual number of sex chromosomes) guaranteed to sire a super woman, while a heterozygous mother can only throw a super 50% of the time. 🙂

What happens if a female gets a double mutation would be very interesting indeed. The other possibility is that like some mutations in horses (Frame Overo), it could be lethal when homozygous.

          • Danny

Well, a super father has a 100% probability of passing on his super genes to his daughters (and zero probability of passing them on to his sons), but whether it manifests as powers or is only carried along, masked, depends on whether or not two mutated X chromosomes are required.

If a double mutation is lethal, that would actually encourage supers to have children with non-supers, spreading the genes around. It would also mean that super women would be even less common than if super women with a double mutation could exist, though it may only change the odds by a minute amount. That would make having powers a bit of a double-edged sword when it comes to having children, if you happen to fall in love with another super of the opposite gender; there would be a 50% chance of either having a still-birth or miscarriage.
So, this would mean that either a super woman with a double mutation would either be exceptionally gifted (double mutation = not lethal), or she would be nonviable in the genetic sense (she would not survive – double mutation = lethal). Is there any chance of a third possibility, that the double mutation would somehow “cancel out”, and she would not show powers but would be able to pass on the genes?

On the other hand, if the super gene is recessive, not dominant, only the double mutation ladies would develop powers, while all men with the mutated X chromosome would develop powers. From what we can see of this particular universe, there seem to be more male superheroes than female superheroes, but all of these heroes are still in the minority (and we haven’t really seen much of this world anyway). This may signify either that the super genes are recessive, or dominant but excessively rare, either of which is possible.

          • SKB

The reason I said “barring an unusual number of sex chromosomes” is due to the possibility of a small variety of multiple sex chromosomal individuals, eg. XXY, and the rarer (and more often symptomatic XXYY). If a super father is one of those, it may not be guaranteed that he passes on the super mutation – however, then there’s the question of genetic expression of super powers even happening at all in that particular male.

I suppose it might be possible that a double mutation might be a canceling effect. My understanding of genetics lags a bit here, I’m not entirely certain there are any genetic mutations that work that way. I’m always willing to learn, so if anyone knows, chime in 😉

The fact that supers seem to be the minority, and women a smaller number still, does seem to support the idea it’s a sex-linked mutation, doesn’t it?

Of course, if we really want to complicate things, we’re beginning to understand that for redheads, for example, not only do you need the red mutation, but also the correct conditions to flip the epigenetic switch while the embryo is in development (it appears to be linked to sunlight exposure in the mother during embryonic development). With that theory, it’s possible we’re not looking at a sex-linked mutation, but at a non-sex-linked mutation and an epigenetic factor that limits the expression of super powers.

          • Danny

That’s a very good point. I did forget to factor in the XXY, XYY, and XXYY individuals. And I agree, anyone with more background in genetics, please chime in here! We’d appreciate it. 🙂

And I didn’t consider environmental factors, but that could definitely be significant. I wonder what sort of epigenetic switch would “turn on” super powers?

      • Sunfire

I absolutely agree Sofia – it’s like he’s determined to be pouting about this. I don’t know if it’s from a personal basis (his issues about Kyle’s sexuality aside, he’s definitely got the guardian thing going on), or whether a seniority thing – like he feels the Commander should have taken HIS side against what he sees as a bunch of kids. Whichever it is, he’s acting like a bear with a burr, and his latest comment is just as degrading to Spooks as his evasive discomfort was to Kyle.

        • SofiaT

To be fair, the more I look at that panel, the more I question if it’s a pout. He looks a bit sad… resigned maybe?

Whatever it is, he has issues, that’s for sure.

  • bronakopdin

such a determination in all of them!

I’m still scared on how it will continue but somehow I even look forward to the scene change!
I wonder how Duncan will be… will we see some regret on his face?
I doubt it because he won’t be alone, yet maybe if he feels unwatched or sth…

Not that I forgave him but I might if I see him in pain long enough!!!

  • Terri Sutton

I am loving just how this story is developing.
But I am going to have to nit-pick, sorry. There seems to be a problem with the pose of the Commander in the second panel. It appears (to me at least) as though she is sticking out her crotch, its a pose I see often in standard comics with a heroine in a leotard with 46-14-36 measurements.

    • anonywolf

Maybe she’s leaning back against the desk behind her in an awkward-ish position? Her fists are in line with the desk top to be on there..

      • Terri Sutton

If she is leaning back then there is a lot of weight being put on her pinkie and on an awkward angle too. At least with the visible hand. And why isn’t she putting equal weight on both hands?

        • anonywolf

Maybe only the one hand is on the desk and the rest of the leaning is her ass? I mean- I’ve done that. Although – I have a slightly bigger behind than Commander there.

That – or its a standard pose and the penciller just went with it.

      • EyeDontNo

Re Panel 2: One) Kyle’s foot is hidden between the desk and the Commander. This indicates she is standing, not leaning. I think.
Two) I am not an expert at poses, drawn or otherwise. My understanding is that a ‘pose’ is a stationary stance purposely assumed to convey a specific concept, emotional or otherwise. (Strength, submissiveness, etc.)
Three) The rest following panels indicate that the boys are moving around and changing positions as they continue the conversation.
Summary) Are we sure that Commander is posing? She could be turning her torso to speak to both groups of people in front of her, especially as they keep changing the dynamics of her audience.

        • Phyre Storm

It looks to me like Kyle’s foot is in front of Commander’s, actually, so she could be leaning. It does look a bit weird, though.

    • SofiaT

I’d say Amanda’s pose is the classic power stance: feet apart for better balance, shoulders back and clenched fists.
I too have seen this pose before many times, but on men, not women. (With possibly only the exception of Xena).
I guess it’s about perception, but if it would help you see what I see, do a Hawkeye initiative: imagine Hawkeye (or even Superman or Batman) standing like that. Would he look ridiculous? If anything, I’ve seen Superman holding this pose many times.

I guess it seems more feminine in Amanda’s case, but that’s because Amanda is a woman. My gaze was drawn to her on the second panel immediately (and in black inked lines with no color it was even more commanding) because I was impressed by how Adam managed to draw her in a classic male pose, and still have her keep her femininity, with no of that “boobs and butt” nonsense.

      • Terri Sutton

Now that you mention the classic power stance that pose does kind of resemble that. But it still looks to me as though she is jutting out her pelvis.
My eyes were immediately drawn to her pelvis when I first saw that considering that her jacket in red and I am a top to bottom reader, my eyes should have drawn immediately to her torso as it was other times I’ve seen the Commander full length. Could it be the background detail that is creating my eyes to do that? In a half remembered Art Class I do remember being told to be careful when filling in the BG detail as it could cause the eyes to fixate on the foreground in an unintended manner

        • SofiaT

I think it might be the white pants.
When Alex uploaded the inked page, with no color to distract, her stance was really impressive and the eyes were drawn to her torso; the way she’s pulled the shoulders back, like a General ready for battle.

In the colored version I can sort-of see what you mean about the crotch; the eyes do focus on the lower part of her body more. Although it’s not something I would have noticed if you hadn’t mention it. So I really do think it might be the white tights.

  • thejazband

Commander Amanda has gorgeous quads… yum.

I think Tsunami will pull through. There’s a backstory to his petulant defensiveness along the lines of a protecting a kid brother I think, but he has a good heart, and that will triumph over his reservations under pressure.

  • TwilightDreamer

    Man she’s good 🙂
Can’t wait to see where they go from here!
by the way….Kyle looks really hot in the last panel ;D

    • Keneu

Kyle is always hot. 😀 (stupid pun, I know.)

      • TwilightDreamer

rofl! No no, you’re completely right, he is 😉

        • Keneu

right? 🙂 Annihilator knows it best – especially since his arm was burnt xD

          • TwilightDreamer

lol, oh I’ll bet ;D Anni’s a pretty darn intelligent and cunning guy, but turns out even he wasn’t prepared for everything XP

      • Steven K.

Don’t worry – there are lots of us who don’t let anyone forget that Kyle is ALL kinds of hot!

        • Keneu

And if it’s using puny humour, the better! xD

  • Sunfire

Hi all – LONG time reader, first time poster, just got my account up a few days ago 😀 Loving this WHOLE comic! 😀 There’s a few comments about this page I agree with, so rather than reiterating the whole debate again, I’ll just post my 2 cents as replies 😉
Fantastic work on the whole YP Alex! 🙂

    • SofiaT

Welcome to the comments section, Sunfire!
Glad you decided to participate 🙂

    • Thank you, Sunfire! And welcome! Hope to see you here in the comments a lot! 🙂

    • Welcome Sunfire!

  • Elrohir

A quick observation about P5. Having been a 15 year old myself at one point (yes, generations ago, but we Elves have good memories) I would say I recognize that furrowed brow and the clenched teeth that go with that “ME, TOO” from Mitch. (I can’t quite decide if the “ME” is partially bolded). And the look in those eyes. That is the look of a spirit so bright that it will allow no danger to come to those it loves. No matter the cost. That flame burns bright. And the heart that holds it is huge. If the “adults” ignore that spirit they do so at their own risk. “Stay back” and “Stay out of the fight” are commands that may occur to the adults, but I would say are unlikely to be heeded.
Adam’s drawing has brought to life the intensity of soul so bright that it can not conceive of NOT standing between the ones he loves and any danger. A passion that any Paladin would understand to NOT allow darkness to walk the world unchallenged. A desire to protect and defend that is unbounded. Young? Certainly. But Adam catches that moment that you KNOW in your heart that Mitch would give anything to make the world right. And the set of that jaw shows it.
Veronica’s color palette is amazing. The “black so deep it is blue” hair that I love. Those eyes who’s color let’s you see the soul behind them. The shading and shadows of that leather flight jacket against the freshness of a visage that is youth caught in a heartbeat.
Alex, you and Team TYP have such a wonderful talent in working together that I can find an entire story in the smallest panel on the page. Your storyline is such a broad tapestry with so much detail and glimpses into the characters involved and Adam’s drawing and Veronica’s colors weave in and around it so beautifully. One almost doesn’t know what part of the tapestry to study first.
Done, done, and WELL done to the three of you. And thank you so much for the effort you put into creating such a compelling work of art.
**One day Alex, I hope that a backstory on Mitch will explain why Flyboy is wearing a leather bomber jacket. Flight is in his family perhaps? A father or other family member who was a pilot or crew? Yet another thread in the tapestry that I hope one day you will let us follow.**

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

      “me” is regular font, Elrohir.

      • But there is a coma after “me” so it still stands out.

    • Aw, thank you so much for the very kind words, Elrohir, and the thoughtful analysis! Yep, Flyboy indeed has a fierce heart and a strong fighting spirit—”a desire to protect and defend that is unbounded.”

As for the story of the leather jacket, maybe we’ll learn about that some time… 🙂

      • Elrohir

Hmm…now to ponder what bribe is best used to convince our friend Alex to produce said backstory for Flyboy’s leather bomber jacket…something with chocolate I think…yes… 🙂
**Actually I am uncertain what bribe would work best so I shall seek counsel from the rest of the crew here as to how we can best convince Alex to expand the tapestry.**

        • Sapfo

Oh my dear Elrohir, I am sure I already know some of the suggestions. But if we skip the obvious like young virgins, ambrosia or a trip onboard the Star Trek Voyage. What do we have?
I am so sorry, but I will not give up my virgins. Not even for this

          • Elrohir

Hmm…perhaps then chocolate covered strawberries with an ambrosia side? 🙂

          • Sapfo

*grab onto my virgins and strawberries*
            “Not my strawberries”
            -(゚ロ゚)-

Apparently, I am not so good at sharing 😉

    • Klaus

“Great heart will not be denied.” Theoden King in reply to Merry apologizing for going into battle in defiance of the king’s orders.

      • Elrohir

Awesome reference. And a good thing that his “Great heart” led him so. Or he would not have been on the Pelennor fields with his Dúnedain dagger to stab the Witch King of Angmar and begin the unraveling of the spells that Eowyn finished. I also always thought it was cool how he looked after Pippin so much.

  • Sunfire

Ok this is the dangers of my brain refusing to let me sleep – I come up with far-out ideas based on current info 😛
For example, my mind has picked up and run with this: What if YP wins the big battle in the end, and everyone was needed and Kyle DID play a pivitol role in turning the tide so to say. Then under escort back, the Platinum Priestess (under Tsunami’s escort/guard) says ‘innocently’ out loud “Galls you doesn’t it? I mean, there we were – and zap! Now nothing…” *looks off to the distance, still ‘innocently’ thinking out loud* “To think you’re so ready and planned, only to be shown up by a bunch of kids” *dramatic sigh* “And one of them gay AND a Hell-Prince” *shakes head* “What’re things coming to?” *looks sideways sly at Tsumani* “And imagine if the media had known? Wouldn’t lder heroes like you would be shadowed for the ‘glory kids’ angle?” *rolls her shoulders* “Then before you know it they’re too big for their boots and not listening to you..though I suppose you aren’t anyway if your Commander let kids fight with you. Next thingyou know you’re left out of the loop more and more.. *shakes head again* “Personally? I’d nip such things in the bud..” *leaves the poisoned seeds to fester and grow*
Bam, the next enemy of the YP is within! Tsunami! 😛
And that folks, is my mind at 5am lol 😛

    • Sunfire

Actually she’d say: “Do you have any idea how humiliating that is? To think you’re so ready and planned, only to be shown up by a bunch of kids?” (then cue sigh and continue lol :P)

      • Nate

As long as she doesn’t call them “meddling kids” 😀

        • Terri Sutton

Of course she wouldn’t call them “meddling kids”, that is totally the Annihilator’s line.

    • LimpBiskit

Ok, now you get to write a fic. Congrats 😛

      • Sunfire

hehe ohh I daren’t touch the masterpiece! Speculate, mmhm, hypothesise, sure…but I don’t know if dare I *write* write on it lol 😛 Love the work as always Alex – am on edge for next page! 😀

    • AseretZone

XD Sounds like a nifty fanfic, at least. I mean, I turned one of the Care Bears’ allies into a villain in a fanfic I’m working on, so Tsunami being turned villain can’t be too far from the spectrum of possibilities.

But, what if your fanfic turns out to be close to the real thing? XD Wouldn’t that be rad?

      • Sunfire

If I was right I’d first do a happy dance for being right! Then I’d do a sad puppy hunch-over for Tsunami being that much of a jerk 😛

  • Richard Grant Muir

So, you have to know it’ll go like this: They get to the first area, and nothing.

Spooky “We only have time to visit one more before the ritual starts”

Commander “We’ll send the Military to the one you think is more likely, and head for the other ourselves”.

And what will happen? The Military will be at the wrong one 😛

    • Phyre Storm

That, or all three sites will have something going on.

  • Keneu

I don’t know if Tsunami is so immature as to be sullen because he didn’t get his way or if he is just that overly cautious and overprotective. Anyways, I liked his role of questioning the plan because that helped to sort things out, even if it’s not the way Gordon expected. He needs to learn how not to take things to heart too much.

Amanda’s pose in pannel 2 looks a little weird – she looks like she was turning around to face the other YP members, but her legs are a bit too wide and in that pose the only thing she could do is glance them, at most. I have no idea about drawing though. I guess it’s done to emphasize the emotions conveyed, like in manga (that’s why sometimes you can see manga characters running half crouched or apparently having broken spines and so on.)

Also, I don’t know how to explain it exactly, but isn’t Fluke acting a bit weird? He was opposing Tsunami with a passion, but when Amanda said they would all fight, he quieted down. If you compare his face on the last pannel to Mitch’s on the fifth one, the difference is clear. Is he that scared?

Finally, I’m excited to see Kyle a bit more in high spirits again. I wonder if there’s more to him and his powers besides manipulating fire and being a linked to the netherworld? If there is, he could use his infernal side to even the odds, but given that he’s known it for just a few hours, I hope he doesn’t lose control if he makes use of powers he’s not used to.

The TL;DR version of this comment is that I loved this page and I’m excited to see them fight. 😛

    • Kisa ‘Yuki’ Johnson

I see it too about the posture, and the head size. >.>
But, I’m far from a perfect artist myself, so!

      • Keneu

I didn’t noticed anything weird about the head size?

It seems that Amanda is between Fluke and the others but a little behind, but because of the angle it looks like she’s in the middle and at the same level than them. Like I said, no idea about drawing, but that’s what I think.

By the way, is Fluke taller than Amanda? He looks like he is the tallest apart from Tsunami.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I don’t know if Tsunami is so immature as to be sullen because he didn’t get his way or if he is just that overly cautious and overprotective.
Thinking back, Tsunami also got a bit pouty back in the first interlude, just after Spooky pulled his “I would totally be the one on top” line. He may be overly cautious as well, but I’m beginning to think there may be a bit of immaturity-that-belies-his-age. Which does make the question of why he got the position of deputy leader all the more intriguing.

      • Keneu

That would make sense. Anyways, whatever his problem is, he needs to fix it because it’s starting to affect the others too.

  • LL

I didn’t think I could love the Commander more, but this page proved me wrong! <3

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

To me, Tsunami seems like a smug bastard….sorry guys….JMHO….Got it!

    • Rafael

I agree, I tend to stay away from people with attitudes like Tsunami’s. He may be hot with all those muscles and tattoos but I cannot stand him.

      • Derkins

I’m not even a beefcake fan. Pretty much everything about him bugs me :p

  • Jackal

    Spooky is love. <3

  • Danny

I may be late to the party on this, but did anyone notice that Amanda seemed to take for granted that Spooky would be by her side in the upcoming fight? It seems that, instead of Spooky being Amanda’s second-in-command, the two are actually co-leaders, relying on each other and sharing mutual understanding. While Gordon is fretting over the younger members and occasionally acts like he’s part of the decision-making, he doesn’t actually appear to be in the chain-of-command, and that seems to cause some tension between Gordon and the other Young Protectors…

    • Klaus

Alex has stated that Tsunami is deputy leader.

      • Danny

Oh, I must have missed that; thank you for correcting me. However, she does appear to lean more on Spooky’s judgment than Gordon’s, at least in this scene. This raises more questions. Why is Spooky not in the chain-of-command, if Amanda holds his opinion in such apparent high esteem? What are Gordon’s duties as second-in-command? Although he seems to be acting biased in this scene, as many commenters have pointed out, it may be rooted in his worry over the younger members of the team, the threat to the world, and a lack of tact in interpersonal relationships; I can’t imagine Amanda would have picked him as her deputy leader if he weren’t fully qualified. So, what are his qualifications?

        • Richard Grant Muir

Some of it could be that he was the only other adult at the time (before Kyle turned 18). Tsunami’s overprotective nature could stem from all sorts of things, but the problem comes if he doesn’t trust his teammates due to ageism.

          • Danny

What about Spooky? Although I would think that Amanda would require more qualification of her deputy leader than just being over 18, that still leaves both Spooky and Gordon. I wish we knew a bit more about the group dynamics prior to Kyle’s involvement with Duncan.

& I agree that Gordon not trusting his teammates because of their youth would certainly be an issue. It would be an interesting complication were it to occur in the upcoming battle against the forces of Hell, though.

  • Keneu

By the way, I just noticed – if the PP is a priestess, does that mean gods exist, too? Or does she worship demons? If she is a cult leader, that would explain what Spooky said about the “crazies.”

    • Saxon_Brenton

To break the answer down into two parts:

It has been asked before whether the Platinum Priestess is a real priestess in the religious sense, or whether she’s just calling herself that because its a kewl alliterative supervillain code name. At this point we don’t know, but if – as Alex has hinted below – she’ll be appearing Real Soon Now, then we may be able to tell be the way she interacts with her minions (assuming she does any interacting with her minions).

Whether or not gods exist has not been touched on either. *BUT* from the fact that the Young Protectors universe seems to work like a ‘typical’ superhero setting in that it has the kitchen sink inclusion of all sorts of disparate stuff (aliens, magic, demons, mutants…) I would expect that it is at least probable that multiple gods of multiple religious pantheons exist as well.

      • Keneu

Thank you for the answer! That only makes me more excited for Wednesday’s page. 😀

    • Klaus

      What is a god?

      • Keneu

That is a very good question, but I doubt anyone has the answer to it. xD

Your comment reminded me of this oneshot done by a Korean author that calls herself currygom: http://www.batoto.net/comic/_/comics/myum-myum-r7799

(If we are not supposed to link to any other comic or page just tell me and I’ll delete it right away.)

      • Derkins

There is no Dana only Zuul?

      • sailorbard

A miserable little pile of (divine) secrets?

    • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Nothing crazy about it–as an ordained priestess, she would have had to study some minimum number of hours in an accredited seminary, following a curriculum that would probably include pastoral counseling, musicology, and an internship.

      • Keneu

Sircea counseling? It’s hard to imagine. xDD

  • Derkins

In that one comment Tsunami single handedly positioned himself against every single person who is in the plane with him, and the feelings/opinions they’ve just expressed at this most crucial juncture. Doubting Spooky is doubting Amanda and her faith in Spooky, and also (of course) everyone else. He’s really got a bad case of “I’m always right,” if he feels the need to express it in such an inappropriate way and time, seriously damaging morale before going into this highly dangerous situation, never-mind drawing a rift between himself and his teammates. I mean really. He just pointed out he doesn’t really fully trust *anyone* he’s working with, right before arriving at their first location.

  • Donald Burch

Sorry all, I’m very late to the conversation or very early, depending on your point of view. I comment about this page and last since I missed the party entirely last time.

Adam mentioned that he intended to work on his figures and I see a marked improvement in the last two pages. The bottom image of the last page struck me as utterly beautiful. Adam managed to capture both youthfulness of the kids at their appropriate ages along with the countenance that marks heroes. I’m not sure whether it was because he had a larger palette to work with and thus he could draw in more detail or whether he made a lasting improvement to his style, I’m uncertain. I lean toward the latter given the current page. Amanda’s face in panel one and Mitch in panel five stand out as superb in quality and that given the exceptional quality of this work.

Alex is the wordsmith and creative mastermind behind this work but I’m uncertain exactly what Veronica works on. Once I know in specific I’ll make sure to offer feedback she might be able to use in her work. Regardless, I find the work of all three of you deeply inspiring as both an artist and as a fan. I appreciate your time and effort. It clearly pays off, thank you!

    • Veronica does the coloring ^_^

      • Donald Burch

Wow! Okay, then we truly have a triple threat on TYP because the coloring is amazing. Not just for consistency but for some unusual choices like using blue as a backdrop for intensely emotional panels. I can tell the subtle differences in ethnicity between characters and that when nothing specific has been mentioned. Nice work, Veronica! I’ll keep my eyes peeled for other ways I can lend you a hand in the future. I appreciate your hard work!

  • A fine and powerful pre-battle page, if I do say so. You guys have wrapped this acrimonious drama-boy(s) flight up nicely. NOOOEE, I’m NOT going to call the Commander a Drama Queen. YOU can if you think you’re tough enough (call off the flying ninja robot pigs, that was a generic all inclusive ‘you statement’ meant only to include nameless people tougher than the Commander), but I know my limits. She’ll just be ‘The Commander’ to me or maybe Ma’am… with that expression in Panel#1. Alex, you guys really set a perfect stage for our meet and greet with Duncan and Miss Platinum (I hope they made a cheese platter and punch for the get-together!) This is some excellent and delicious drama and I’m a happy fan-boy. This page made me smile big-time.

First things first, clearly Adam is a fair and decent compositionalist. Look at the credit line on THIS page. @alexwoolfson:disqus , today, has the all powerful credit positioning on The Commander’s bosom! Nice AW, nice. Veronica has a very nice Amanda bicep placement, and Adam has been humble and mingled his name into Paul’s very buff (but white) torso.

You’re a fair man Adam, but still that Red Hot crotch placement on the last page was primo, so I think it’s all balancing well. Kudos to you all. I think this will be my last credit report. I expect that Veronica and Alex can take care of themselves from here on out… That’s why they all have herds of Hollywood lawyers. 🙂

BTW, thanks for a look at the line-art version of the page. That was just super fun. Incredibly impressive and at the same time made me love Miss Gandini’s work all the more. You guys are definitely a “whole is greater than the sum of the parts” kinda team. Nothing like work-in-progress to make one feel how much effort and talent goes into a simple page. Heh.

Oh, and quite a number of people I know in the San Diego area said their on-line and wireless connections totally went belly up on them due to Comic-con. Con was supposed to totally supply their own connections, and cell-towers, but apparently the Con and the Fans sucked up all the available digi space and many locals ended up pee-oh’d about the whole thing. So even if we had to wait a bit longer for Veronica’s color… thanks for getting it all up so fast. It was so worth it.

I’m disturbed that my gay brain finds panel#1 so hot. What is it about a bossy looking Commander that is so attractive. I shall continue to admire her safely from afar. Adam and Veronica, that is a stunning headshot. All compliments. She’s beautiful and fierce and fine. Bravo(a).

Okay I’ve had a little time to read a few comments about P#2 and the Commander’s pose. Great thoughts from a lot of people. I liked the discussion. So, this is just an “In my humble opinion” bit … I really thought it worked for many of the reasons that were said in the discussions:

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-46/#comment-1506083073

It’s a dramatic powerful pose that fits this genre and fits a declarative statement focused on going into battle. Particularly a battle they may NOT survive, but is the right thing to do. I had a positive, “YES!”, reaction even before reading any of the other comments.

When I was reading Marvel at 10-15 years old, as Sophia and others said nicely below, many male super heroes did exactly this pose. Strong, hips out (psychologically speaking ‘junk forward’ … Yes it’s partly about sex and power and that’s as it should be. Arms back, proud pose that supports a line of dialog that might sound silly from a non-super hero. However, here, it seems just right to me as part of (IMHO) Alex’s subtle and occasional nods to the super hero form and the genre we’re in.

The Commander’s pose is no more sexualized than it should be. Powerful, sexy, but respectful. She is POWERFUL and she IS sexy. We are sexual beings and ‘feeling our oats’ is all part of going into battle. Men or women, that pose says tuff. So I loved it. That’s a pose that supports a line like:

“As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again!” OR “Lets go kick some Duncan-butt!”

    Even without a hoop-skirt.

The sneaky thing (I think) about A, A & V’s work in TYP overall is that we get a lot of pages where things are subtly more sophisticated and grounded than a lot of your day-to-day super hero comics. More character work and when it’s heightened it’s usually pretty damn cool and creative. Here is an example I really enjoyed, when Laampros flies away and we suddenly realize that “hell” was a bubble of displaced reality being fueled by Kyle’s power and affinity for his Pops. So, when Laampros flew out of that sphere…

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch2-page-46/

I remember gasping and thinking, COOL. It was heightened drama and very powerful and I thought it worked well for the world we’re in. So, occasionally I think a nod to the heightened drama of the form is just right. So, I know, TLDR, but I loved the Panel and the poses of ALL of them.

Oh, and my boy Spooky rocks that damn trench coat… Nom nom nom.

*chris throws his boxers at the open-minded Spooky* (IKR? Subtle)

Love P#3. I love that The Commander makes it clear that no one is “ordered” to go against their abilities and beliefs. Erm… is Paul just hot or what? (sorry shallow hottie fanboy moment there). I do love in P#4 how sweet and sincere Paul and Kyle are. No hubris, just a desire to do the right thing. In that panel all the conflict of the last few pages seems pushed aside for a moment and it’s so clear that they want to do the right thing and Kyle clearly trusts and believes in Amanda. I found this both adorable and also heroic all around.

I completely agree with everything that Elrohir wrote about Panel#5. Mitch just PUNCHES in with a fierce pride and a need to be acknowledged. Elrohir said it all so well so I’ll shut up and just…

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-46/#comment-1505470452

I actually loved P#6. Honestly, I’ve had a hard time with Tsunami’s subtle denial and homophobia. I agree with all the current crit. from various people.

Honestly, for being only 1 or 2 years older then his colleagues, he’s been pompous and full of a lot of his own self-righteous bombast. An attitude that is NOT based on experience or wisdom… YET. He’s definitely in a position he’s not ready for. Maybe he is a wonderful peacetime assistant for Amanda, “Good Morning, The Young Protectors. How may I direct your call?” But he’s not in any way ready to deal with the pressure of real battle responsibility, YET and that’s okay.

The difference between Amanda and Gordon’s experience is light years. Still, all that said, I almost felt sorry for him in this panel. I don’t know what our Alex has planned for Gordon’s character in the long run, but at this moment, I do feel that, over time, Gordon is capable of growing up and understanding ‘gay’ and ‘coming out’ and learning what this is all about. However this little boy moment in this panel broke my heart and made him seem so very young and scared. Artistically, it’s an amazing juxtaposition between this huge muscled tattoo’d powerhouse and the inner little boy who is suddenly vaulted into a hard war-time challenge. He’s scared for himself and everyone. Worse, he’s just made some serious mistakes (in his fear) and EVERYONE has shot him down. Yes he deserves it, but (I don’t know about you guys) I’ve been there and there is nothing worse in an argument than the moment when you suddenly realize that you are actually in the wrong.

I think this is Gordon’s moment. Got that t-shirt and it hurts. I can only hope he learns from this. There’s no way forward but to suck it up (usually with pouting first). Well, so I’ve heard. 🙂

I may be personalizing, but I remember some friends who were really hard on me when I told them I was gay. Later, long after they KNEW they were wrong and it was clear they still wanted to be friends, and we were starting to act like friends again, they finally got it together enough to ADMIT to “having been wrong” and to apologize. Admitting to being wrong was harder than the accepting me as gay part. LOL.

Okay, I can’t deny that I LOVED Silibub’s Spooky line, “… bitch please…” Nobody disses Spooky without a Gibbs smack.

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-46/#comment-1504941897

Okay P#7… my sweet-faced Spooks. Man is he cute or what? With his little bowl of magic Cheerios. Only three left! Even with the big drama he doesn’t spill a drop out of that iScry bowl. The man just rocks. And, Adam and Veronica, the level of detail in the seats, the clothing, the background, in addition to the great expressive face and body work is just continually outstanding. Love it and thank you.

I do love Kyle’s expression in the final panel. Yes buddy, it is definitely time to kick some geriatric buttocks (okay he’s a Silver Fox and there’s a kickstarter image somewhere of Sircea that’s pretty smoking hot). However, ass must still be kicked!

Okay, I just know this isn’t going to be easy… I think I’m already feeling pre-triggered with worry. Well I don’t believe in going into battle pages unsedated…

*chris goes to find sedatives and calm nerves for the next pages*

Hey, you three creatives… THANK YOU for this awesome character interlude ramping us into the upcoming fisticuffs. It’s been tense and revelatory and wonderful to see all of them with their character worries hanging-out and their hair down a bit. (Kyle’s hair though is ALWAYS perfect… damn fanboy moment again). This page perfectly caps off a really special bit of character time. One that seldom makes it into a graphic novel. Just something that sets this book above the pack and just makes us want to know more about all of them. Hmmmm… I wonder if Duncan is getting his pre-battle massage and facial? I can’t wait. Thanks guys!

*chris goes down to check the mail, in case the print version sorta magically arrived early :)*

    • ….Chris, there is never enough gushing over Mitch…. ^_^ never ^_^

But other than that another great comment. ^_^

    • Thank you so much for another wonderfully fun analysis, Chris! It’s a real treat to read your panel-by-panel reactions. Glad to hear you enjoyed the little sneak peek into our process—yep, there’s a ton of work that goes into every page (every panel, even!) And that’s why it’s so much fun for all three of us to see that work given such loving attention here in the Comments. 🙂

    • Always so nice to read your thoughts, Chris! Thanks for all the kindness, enthusiasm, and support you’ve shown to page after page of our little adventure. 🙂

      • Thank you Adam. That means a lot coming from you. It’s all very sincere. I am aware that I get long-winded and occasionally repetitive because I see similar things I love over time. That said, you guys putting such special efforts and additives in each pages’ panels makes a second pouring over, with a fine tooth comb, extra fun for me. The pages do lift my week, but the closer look and then trying to see WHY I’m moved, is always a treat.

I thank all three of you for that. I do hope you guys can feel that your above and beyond efforts are recognized by a lot of readers out here. Many thanks to you, Vero and Alex for a unique work-in-progress experience. Knowing that there will be a GN at the end of this journey is just the maraschino cherry on the whole deal. 🙂

    • Sapfo

Yes Chris, you did do a mega comment again 😀

But even if Spooky is openminded, I hope that I can lure him in with some homecooked meal here. What do you say Spooky, would you like some pasta. I can make a mean bolognese for fighting heros 😉

      • Sapf? I have a super ability to nom nom nom a whole bowl of good bolognese so fast that …. Well let’s just say SUPER fast (see what I did there?).

So can I come over too? And sit next to Spooky? I could pass him side dishes and we’d never talk about gay stuff… just hot Swedish gals with mad culinary skillz. Promise. 🙂

*chris wonders if he can still pull off a decent innocent look? or if it’s too much like lampross selling used cars… upon reflection, a humble look seems best??? chris wonders where he put THAT look also… bother!*

        • Sapfo

Again Chris, Yes you are innocent. That is why you and your hubbie are welcome also. Table placement will be you on one side and hubbie on the other so he can keep an eye on you… I mean… so you and hubbie can gazy into each others eyes all night long, while I sneak of with Spooky 😉

And if you have any problems during the dinner, I am sure some ice cold icecream in your lap can cool you of.

Yes Innocent Chris, it will be a dinner to remember 😀

  • silibub

So I’m curious — who thinks that Duncan and Sircea will actually get their side of the bargain fulfilled? I keep vacillating as I try to place two basically unstoppable supervillains in the context of the comic’s world at large — like, we know there will be more arcs in the Young Protectors story than just this one (thank you benevolent writer god), although it won’t necessarily be laid out in a linear fashion, so it could be that Alex is setting them up as recurring antagonists for later stories. Although that brings us back to the immortality problem, since unless there are special circumstances under which they could still be killed, it seems like they couldn’t really be stopped unless they abandoned villainy on their own. (Duncan seems like he may be on that track. Sircea…less so.)

If Alex intends to make Duncan and Kyle the endgame pairing, I could see why he’d want to age Duncan down, at least physically. The age gap would still be there, but maybe Kyle’s demonic origin grants him a kind of lasting youth/immortality as well that means over time they’d be on more equal ground? (Maybe Kyle has to defeat/kill Laampros to come into his true power as reigning hell king, I don’t know.)

But since it’s just as likely that Alex intends to resolve the hellpocalypse problem in this arc, and/or he has other ideas in mind for Kyle’s love life that don’t involve a conveniently youthful-looking Duncan, and so the deal could easily fall through. Whether Laampros arrives intending to hold up his end but the team interrupts and derails the encounter before he does his thing, or he’s planning to trick them by exploiting loopholes in the wording of their bargain, there are so many ways this could go wrong. And yeah, they’re villains, but I’d rather not see either of them maimed, killed, or turned against the other.

…I rambled a lot. Uh. Thoughts?

    • You know, that’s not something I had thought of: that Duncan and Sircea could be antagonists for more than this arc. That would be interesting. The by line: It’s complicated. I think would work so well with such a situation. Kyle having to fight back Duncan over and over, their attraction making it, well, complicated.

But that’s my brain working in saga mode. I tend to do that.

      • silibub

It would be interesting! Even though the other arcs wouldn’t be focused on Kyle, during fights Kyle and Duncan could be throwing one-liners back and forth and, I don’t know, Paul would be like, “Dude, are we gonna fight him or do we have to stand here watching you flirt all day?”

        • davefragments

duncan might give up and turn on Sircea because he loves Kyle, sincerely loves him and has never loved before.

          • davefragments

On the OTHER HAND, Laampros might turn on Duncan and Sircea because Kyle is his half-son and Laampros might want Kyle in charge of his “new” kingdom.

          • silibub

I wonder about that, if even despite the apparent years of planning that went into this particular power-grab Duncan might have a change of heart helped along by genuine feelings for Kyle. Speaking just for myself, it would have to be done very well and authentically for me to buy it — I sometimes find it weird and disappointing when villains suddenly drop everything they’ve worked for to chase hero tail, and it often seems more narratively convenient than anything else. Especially now that Duncan’s sort of past the point of no return as far as betraying Kyle — now that he’s crossed that hurdle and is back working directly with Sircea, it might be easier for him to keep on his villainous track.

Although I’ve wondered before if Sircea might turn out to be the Big Bad or main villain (of this arc, at least) because events turn her and Duncan against each other. It would bum me out, because I’m weirdly invested in their friendship (or whatever-ship), but it’s not out of the question.

          • Steven K.

“Duncan’s sort of past the point of no return as far as betraying Kyle”
            – Yep; that’s why I’m in the FireFly camp/ship at the moment. There’d have to be some MAJOR and SINCERE twists and turns to get the Duncan/Kyle situation where it could even credibly begin to work now. What Duncan did and the way he did it was just “beyond the pale” so as to make something with Kyle and Duncan just about impossible to accept/believe without a lot of major wild and deep shit happening, and not sure there will be enough volumes of the saga for that.

        • I could see that. This also goes to my idea of coffee meetings. 😀

    • Saxon_Brenton

Uhm. There’s a lot there to think about.

One way of looking at it is the observation of classic pop-culture villains is that they keep coming back by popular demand, and each time they have to be defeated, abd that after a time this wussifies them. I know the Daleks have been described in those terms, but I’m also thinking of the collorary made by Peter A David in one of his ‘But I Digress…’ columns: the very best supervillains are the ones who to some extent get away with it. For example Dr Doom may have his short term plots thwarted, but his default character status is that retains/regains his rulership of an entire country, with all the diplomatic perks of untouchability that go along with it.

It suddenly occurs to me that even if Laampros’ invasion is halted, the possibility that Annihilator and Platinum Priestess might somehow get to keep the eternal youth and health that they bargained for would put them in that category. Up until now I had been subconsciously assuming that when Laampros was thwarted, he would automatically recall his favours (cue a scene where the young A. and PP. suddenly age back to their proper chronologies – and worse, as Laampros has a fit of spite and ages them even further into the decreptitude they were fearing).

But if it’s the case that the mechanics of demon deals that the gift doesn’t have to be ‘maintained’ by the demon, (ie, that once they’ve given their gift they can’t casually take it away again) then the deal looks better from the villains point of view. (And thinking about it, I would hope that the Priestes was smart enough to know that you don’t want to be *continually dependent* of the favour of the demon – since that would give the demon ongoing power over you)

Ooo. Sudden wild thought. Maybe this is why Annihilator left Red Hot alive back at warehouse. It’s a setup. The villainous pair wanted Red Hot to contact the rest of the Young Protectors and arrange for the invasion to be thwarted. It would take careful timing: A. and PP. get their eternal youth and health, the ritual proceeds ahead of time because A. and PP. want to trick the Young protectors into intervening in the part of th scheme that suits the viallins. The heroes turn up, stop Laampros, and the villains scurry off into the night giggling. Hmm, but that requires up-front delivery by Laampros, and I don’t think that’s likely to happen.

Sorry, I think I’m kind of obsessed with the question of what Annihilator let Red Hot.

      • silibub

These two questions you’ve brought up — why Duncan let Kyle go free with full knowledge of what he and Sircea are planning, and whether Laampros’s “gifts” are permanent or conditional — are pretty freaking crucial in my opinion, and it’s been driving me crazy that we just don’t have all the background information necessary to make a sound prediction!

      • I kinda like the idea that A. and PP. keep their youth and health but Llaampros has built in an expiration date which they find out about later.

This means the clock is ticking for them and they must find a way to keep their new selves. What would they do? And how big would the cost be? This plot arc could spill into the other stories too.

      • Steven K.

Dr. Doom has always been my fave character in the Marvel Universe! In my younger days, he was all that I once, in my young fantasy-life, aspired to be (except maybe without the evil or disfigurement parts). Actually, I also used to be an avid comic collector, and I almost quit cold-turkey about the time of Fantastic Four 300, where he was “killed off” – I was so upset. But of course he came back. Namor might be a close-second.

  • In for camping. Couldn’t sleep so might as well be here, after I just a book that had me crying my eyes out at the end *still sniffling*

Can’t wait to see what the new page will bring. Since I couldn’t sleep I now hope I’ll be able to stay awake long enough to read it before I have to sleep 🙂

    • I have the opposite problem… two hour nap and want to go back to dream land…

      • I’m surprised I couldn’t sleep. I’ve been awake for almost 21 hours now.

        • I have been there a lot lately….*hugs* How is your back?

          • Hurting quite a bit, but now happy that I’m able to move better. Yesterday morning I wasn’t even able to lean down and drink water from the sink. Still had my mom help me wash my hair today though, but next time I should be able to do it myself again 🙂
Not moving fast in any way for the next days, still have trouble using my right arm.

          • When I was on vacation I threw out my back but was able to make it better by resting on Saturday and applying heat. I was scared for a little bit, let me tell you. I didn’t know what I was going to do with my super heavy suitcase and being on the plane for hours.

          • Ugh, I feel with you. I did almost the same during my vacation. I got a bad crick in my neck on the flight between US and going to Sweden to stay with Sapfo afterwards. I was barely able to drag my heavy suitcase around. She had me visiting, being sick with the plaque cold.. and barely able to move xD
After 5 days I got to the chiropractor and that helped a lot.
And now two months later this happens again just in the opposite side, and just as bad in other ways.. no, amazingly it’s even worse.
Twice in two months, and of course while my chiropractor (and my doctor) is on vacation this time so got a time when he comes back – on monday. This is just mean xD

          • Ick. Years ago I completely threw out my back and had to lay flat and take lots of drugs for three weeks. I couldn’t put my socks on!

It hasn’t been the same since. Of course, I should be working to strengthen it…

          • D: *hugs*

    • silibub

What book was it? I hate it when stories make me cry, but at the same time I need to be emotionally invested in what I’m reading/watching.

      • It’s called Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. It’s about the hard topic of siblings falling in love (brother and sister). The feelings of confusion, pain, shame, love and having to hide it all.

        • silibub

Sounds pretty heavy, but really interesting and moving if the material’s handled correctly (which it sounds like it is).

          • In my opinion it is, and yes heavy and moving. Good book.. that had me using a couple cleenex, or three.

    • I am almost to the point where I might be good company, hopefully the page isn’t up until then

      • *Hugs*

        • Though I have passed through the anger phase and have entered the depressed/apathetic portion

          • :{

          • Its okay, it isn’t too bad this time around considering, mostly I just want to sleep

          • I hope the page updates early then so you can get to sleep earlier.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Oh honey, I am sorry. *hugs you* I hope you feel better soon.

          • almost there. ^_^

  • Here for camping as well though I’m doing the multi-tasking kind (laundry, some writing, etc.)

I completely missed this page somehow. Thought I was keeping up with updates this past week. I’m excited to see what Anni and the Priestess are up to. Been awhile since we’ve seen ’em.

  • silibub

Remember when Duncan was asking Kyle to dinner in Chapter 1, and he was talking about how dim sum is traditionally a breakfast food but he’s an anarchist, har har? Do you think he makes lame anarchy jokes like that all the time, like a huge nerd?

    • silibub

And not necessarily different jokes, even, just variations on that one theme. Every time he does something even mildly unconventional: “But I am an anarchist, after all. *smug chortle*”

(Sircea in the background yelling that it wasn’t funny the first eight hundred times, either.)

    • stickfigurefairytales

“I know you’re supposed to cross at a crosswalk, but I’m an anarchist.”

      • silibub

        Exactly, what a dork.

  • Reading/skimming comments and let me tell you, it’s so awesome to see comments saying things I’ve thought of but felt like I had trouble explaining in a good way – along with many comments giving good points to things I hadn’t thought of until it was mentioned, leaving me building on my own thoughts and theories.

It’s rare seeing a comic commented/debated in such a great way as this one is. I know this, but sometimes it just strikes me again. Thank you my fellow readers 🙂

    • silibub

I feel really spoiled by this comments section because people really get in and discuss things in addition to reacting to the pages. Which is a credit to the comic as well as the readers, since it’s complex enough to invite that kind of analysis!

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’m finally able to camp again! I wasn’t able to be here for the Saturday page since I was visiting my old grad school and the guest network there blocked this page. It seemed to think this comic had nudity or something. I wonder where they might have gotten that idea…

    • davefragments

They bought a list of “bad” sites and use it blindly.
I was responsible for answering student questions for about a year at work and I ran into all sorts of blocked sites. When someone hit them and needed it, the computer center un-blocked it. That way, they didn’t have to use any brainpower to think about what was blocked. Cheesy and lazy.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Admittedly, the comic *does* have nudity (just not full frontal nudity).

        • davefragments

Where I worked was supposed to have a wonderful fantastic firewall and site blocker. Until our people go their hands on the blocking software and fixed it, secretaries use to type Washington.com instead of Washington.gov and get a rather notorious porn site. I once talked with the computer contractors who ran the computers and showed them all the illicit files I could bring up (naked files of the rankest kind). I don’t type or click on those links anymore.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I don’t remember if I mentioned, but my job interview last week went really well. I’m waiting to hear back now, and I should hopefully know around the end of the week.

    • That’s so great, Sticky! I’m keeping my fingers crossed and thinking good thoughts for you.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you! 😀

    • silibub

Awesome! I really hope you get it!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Aw, thank you!

    • davefragments

Good news. I hope you get it.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you!

    • Yay! Fingers crossed.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you, AJ!

  • Vero continues to struggle with San Diego’s Internet. Looks like the update is a couple hours off. Just a heads up for you beautiful campers. 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

Thanks, Alex! I think I’ll have to head to bed before it’s up, but I’ll look forward to it in the morning.

    • davefragments

Somewhere between 1:30 and 2am (eastern) I fall asleep. I’ll blame any bad dreams on San Diego. The best thing I ever saw in San Diego was Frank Sinatra’s yacht in the harbor. What a claim to fame.
      wink, wink

I came back to add – San Diego is a pretty city.

    • silibub

      Thanks for letting us know!

    • I’ll go get a little nap 🙂 Thanks for letting know.

    • Thanks, Alex. I’ll probably continue to flit in and out.

    • Sapfo

In that case. You all have a happy camping!
I will enjoy the page after work.

*Through the mists enters a shadowy figure. A figure of mystery. One who has been away from this land for so long that it she is now thought of as only legend. Spoke of as only legend. She drifts through the night finally stopping before the campfire, the flickering light causing shadows to dance on her visage. Finally she speaks,* WHO TURNED OFF MY BATTERY!?

(Hi campers, tis I! Work is maddening and I work mostly mornings, so I haven’t been around. But I was on evenings tonight so I thought I’d join you. did you miss me?!)

For those of you that haven’t yet read EMR, you can begin reading it here: http://elanmeetsrafa.com/the-comic/ It is a great webcomic with lots of feels. The story is amazing. ^_^

  • …where did everyone go? It got too quiet….

    • silibub

I’m still here! Just playing a game at the same time.

      • well, like EVERYTHING went quiet, no tweets, no tumblr, no facebook, no comments…..it was freaking me out

        • silibub

Yikes, must have hit a dead hour.

          • but is it really early for tumblr to be dead…

          • silibub

I actually don’t follow too many people so it’s really common for my dash to go quiet — must be creepy though if you’re used to more activity!

          • I was watching Hikaru no Go (just started episode 29-30) and thought I should check on things and there was nothing, nowhere….at least one of my tabs should have been lit up….its weird

          • silibub

Guess the world’s just holding its breath in anticipation of this bomb-ass page!

          • Indeed!

          • Holly

I could always just make a massive post summing up my life since i was last camping so you can all give me attention 😛

          • OK ^_^

          • Holly

I need at least one more vote before I do that. 😛

          • silibub

            Boom. What’s been happening?

          • Holly

The life of Holly. Well mostly I have just been working. I work customer service for a delivery company in New York, though I work here in Canada. I love my coworkers, kind of hate the job. The customers can be spoiled and awful (New Yorkers) and dispatchers are a PAIN.
However one of the positives of work is I met my boyfriend there. It’s a cute story. If you follow me on twitter or tumblr there are pictures. I will share a link if a non follower wants to see.
            However, not everything is decent.
My older brother is living with me and while awesome to live with he’s not pulling his weight. He does not have a job yet despite living here since the end of April, and things only seem to get clean when I’m off to help him. I mean the man is home literally 24/7. I don’t know what to do with him.
Also, I was supposed to start school in September but due to many factors I couldn’t make the money for it. Tuition is for first semester is due Friday and i do NOT have the funds. Nor do I have anyway of getting them. So future is really unclear right now.

            And that’s my life.

          • *hugs*

          • silibub

Aww, I’ll have to check your tumblr to see your boyfriend — I must have missed your posts!

Well, sounds like a mix of good and stressful…I feel for you about your brother, it’s awkward enough having a “you need to actually do shit while you live here” talk with a roommate, let alone a family member.

Try not to stress yourself out about school — what’s important is you’re working now, and you’ll have the money eventually. Delaying it a bit won’t wreck anything!

          • Holly

Yeah but that’s the issue. Without my brother having a job, I have NO savings. I pay all the bills and buy the food. I can’t get rid of the TV and internet without punishing myself, and there is no way to keep my brother from eating when I’m not home so I can’t just limit the amount of groceries coming in.

The issue is that my brother doesn’t care about money, at all. He would prefer to live without it. Were it not for the want to help out the family, he’d just live in a shack in the woods. But because he doesn’t really think about money and stuff, he doesn’t realize what a strain he is actually putting on the family right now, since he’s not working.

He said today that once he gets a job he might just give them my bank account info, and I can just have the money, so long as I give him an allowance for entertainment, and I buy the food he wants. it’s…confusing.

          • silibub

Hmm. I mean, he’s allowed to have his personal philosophy and everything, but when it gets to the point that his lifestyle is interfering with your quality of life and plans for your future, you’re perfectly within your rights to tell him he’s making things difficult for you and you need him to contribute in [x] amount of ways. Although I get it’s easier said than done…but like you said, if he doesn’t realize he’s causing issues, he won’t change his behavior. Someone’s gotta light a fire under his ass, at least while he’s living off your paycheck.

          • Holly

well that’s the thing. There’s no consequence. He has food, shelter, internet, TV, and his pets. I’m not going to let myself suffer by not having internet and food, and i can’t let his pets starve.
And if his cell phone gets turned off well it’s just another excuse he can’t get a job. ~Sighs~
I love the man, but damn.

          • silibub

Ahhh, that sounds frustrating. Sorry I don’t have any concrete advice, except maybe to let him know how you’re feeling about this. I guess since he’s been unemployed for a while he’s gotten comfortable with his current routine, and he’s just reluctant to make a change? But he might make more of an effort if he knew he was causing you real problems. Who knew there was such a thing as being too chill?

          • I can feel you there, my brother is also of that kind…

          • Xithyl

I think we should set up a GoFundMe so that Holly can can afford her tuition.

          • Holly

aww that’s so sweet. But a little late. It’s due on August 1

          • Xithyl

Hmmm /pokes campers. Can we do it people? Can we dig a little and help a camper in need out?

          • Xithyl

Option 2: we try to raise the money so you can afford tuition next semester or quarter.

          • Holly

The course is very strictly structured. I would have to start again September of 2015. But I agree, maybe I should make up a Go Fund Me….

          • Elrohir

and in those last two words are volumes about family spoken…

          • Up voting because I like to hear about you, Holly, but it does sound very stressful for you right now.

          • There’s your vote, Holly. And I’ll heart your post too.

    • Just a waitin’

    • mogoskier

      I’m playing mahjongg tiles.

    • DemureDesire

Lurking, as usual. And writing — trying to catch up for Camp NaNoWriMo as I have almost 12k words to write by the end of the month. And trying not to fall asleep.

    • I’m here. I was writing.

    • Holly

I was watching vids. Though I probably will have to call it a night soon 🙁

    • Saxon_Brenton

I just got home after work (and will briefly need to duck outside again to bring in the laundry)

  • Klaus

Soon the new page will be up. The US air force bombs the ritual site. Exeunt Duncan and Sircea. With that out of the way, the main storyline begins Saturday.

    • You promised you wouldn’t tell, Klaus!

      • silibub

The rest of the comic is just Kyle going to various clubs, where he meets his true romantic interest, Killer, sitting at the bar nursing a fluorescent blue drink.

“Hey kid,” he says, leaning over suggestively. “You like sword fighting?”

        • Sargon

lol, and it ends with a threesome?

          • silibub

We’ve already had a scene with just two guys. Gotta escalate to keep our interest.

          • Yes, but are they fireproof?

          • silibub

            They better hope so!

          • Holly

I thought the main story was about Kyle meeting an Incubus name Jared who tries REALLY hard to prove he’s a nice guy, but his demonic nature keeps making mishaps happen.

          • mogoskier

I want that to exist now. Maybe not in yp but somewhere

          • Me too! Me too!

          • Holly

            haha

  • Still going to be a few more minutes. Are there still campers here? Should I post the WIP page? 🙂

    • Danny

Yes please! I’d like to see it. 🙂

    • silibub

I’ll be happy with whatever! Although WIP pages are pretty cool!

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

      Still here Alex. 🙂

    • Awake, but barely ^_^ I can wait for whatever you decide ^_^

    • mogoskier

      yes please.

    • OK. Penciled page is up. 🙂

      • Elrohir

And many thanks for showing the work in progress…it is to cool to see Adam’s work as a separate layer prior to Veronica working her magic on it. 🙂
