111 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 44

Based on Commander’s tone, I’m beginning to get a “Be careful what you wish for” vibe, Fluke, my friend.

We had our fifty-third bonus page in a row on Wednesday, and then earlier today, y’all tipped over the target for the donation bar below — yet again! 😀 That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, July 23rd (page 45!), Wednesday, July 30th (page 47!), Wednesday, August 6th (page 49!), Wednesday, August 13th (page 51!), Wednesday, August 20th (page 53!), and on Wednesday, August, 27th (page 55!), there will now be an additional bonus page (page 57!) on Wednesday, September 3rd! Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Looks like Commander wants to hear directly from Spooky about whether it’s a good idea for Kyle to come along. Will he be able to convince her that our hero won’t cause all Hell to break loose? Also, Fluke’s looking a little concerned in that third panel—is he having second thoughts? And most importantly, why the heck do they keep referring to their glider as a boat?!

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • davefragments

We are down to the Nitty Gritty and the Commander lays down the law.

    • davefragments

Or at least the facts as she sees them.

    • Really distracted apparently 😉 Nice job on snagging the V!

      • davefragments

I just refreshed the page and there it was – read all that dialog too. I mean seriously read it not just skimmed.

  • They won’t let you down Commander!

  • Sapfo

Good morning and good new page
Spooky is the sane one XD

  • Ooh Spooky just what are you going to say…

It’s been said many times and I’ll say it again, I really love how you have written/portrayed Amanda, Alex! She is my favorite in the comic and so amazing to see such a strong character!

    • Glad you like her, starrwinter! She’s fun to write! (And we get to see a lot more of her doing her thing in this chapter. 🙂 )

  • SofiaT

We already know what Spooky’s reply is going to be… Or do we?
    Dun, dun, dun.

    • Saxon_Brenton

What, and everything that Spooky told Red Hot back at the warehouse was bulldust to make Red feel better? Gosh, what a dreadful idea.
But I’m sure the more paranoid among us would think that since Commander is a telepath, that she already knew both Red and Spooky’s answers in advance if she really needed to – which means that any public question could be just a public relations display. (Another dreadful idea…)

      • SofiaT

I’m sure Spooky will give the all clear; otherwise he would have said something by now.

But Spooks doesn’t lie. If there is a possibility for complications (magical or otherwise), he’ll mention it. I just have a feeling that, complications or not, he understands that Kyle needs to be there and fight with the others better than anyone.

And, who knows, maybe the need is for the team too, not just Kyle.

        • Klaus

What Kyle needs is entirely beside the point. The fate of the world is at stake.

          • SofiaT

I didn’t just mean that he needs it to redeem himself or make amends or whatever.

I meant it in the stars-allign-and-the-fated-one-appears sense.
Kyle is obviously (to us, the readers) needed to save the world. Maybe somehow (premonition? prophesy?) Spooky understands that too.

  • Oh the feels, the tension.. that question. That’s Amanda. Straight forward and down to business.

  • … Mitch….

    • Heh

Cheer up doki… He is side by side with spooks, my bet it’s next page we’ll have a huge panel with both of them.

      • *sigh* I am just feeling miserable due to most likely being sick, “that time” of the month, and lack of adequate sleep. If I could go to sleep I would, but I can’t. *sigh*

        • Heh

Make some tea, eat some sweets, and play something till you sleep… that usually works for me, but i do understand that sucks. >:(

          • ……I tried that this morning…didn’t work too well

          • Heh

Im so sorry, sweetheart. I wish i could do something.

          • Well, I have hopes that I might be able to pass out sometime tonight ^_^

  • Well Spooky gas certainly been put on the spot. Will he pull through with flying colors? Tune in same TYP channel same TYP time to find out. 🙂

  • Sapfo

I think that Amanda i asking the right questions to Kyle, He knows what is in his heart. And then they do have the demon/hell expert, why not ask him also….. Darn it Alex, you did not give enough room on this page for Spooky to answer Amandas question.. ;D
I really do like this page, but it have been a long week. So I think that I might slink of to bed again.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Good night!

  • David Welbourn

hm. How could this go? A flat “yes” or “no” from Spooky is kinda boring, but might serve if such certainty is the point. A reply that Kyle is a wild card, that it’s impossible to answer Commander’s question would be highly unsatisfying and make me wonder why Alex set it up in the first place.

However, this question might be a way to give us readers a teensy bit of info about the nature of demons before the confrontation. So I’m looking forward to that. (Assuming I’m right. I’ve been wrong before.)

    • silibub

I’m hoping for some more information about demons, too, and for someone to say exactly what kind of effect they think Kyle might have on the ritual if he goes down there. Spooky might shed some light on the nature of what Duncan and Sircea are doing spell-wise — I hope he does, anyway!

  • Heh

Missed camp again…. But yay, more comander! I won’t lie, my favorite so far is Fluke, but Amanda is just so awesome i think im gonna cry everytime she speaks sense into other people’s heads. Wisdom that came along with hearing and seeing a LOT of bullsh*t in some persons heads as well, i suppose.

  • Jen Roberts

    Oh c’mon!!!
I kinda want Spooky to be like “Down to five… I mean… er, sorry, what did you ask?” xD And everyone to go “OH RIGHT, Spooky is busy actually doing things while we’re getting into snit fits.”

    • Heh

‘ Down to five… hey mitch watch that curve ‘
      ‘ So? ‘
      ‘ So what? ‘
‘ About kyle killing us all in the battlefield….’
      ‘Oh, that.’

  • Okay, I have the urge to pat Tsunami on the shoulder and go: There, there.

Commander really is just so freaking awesome. I love that they all pretty much just shut up and go: Yes, Ma’am. Respect, I like the look of it.

  • Stubbylegs

To me, Kyle’s face in the 4th panel suggests that maybe he’s not so sure of what he’s saying…although it’s clear to me that he wants it to be true.

  • silibub

Again, I’m really intrigued by the notion that using magic makes you insane, and that Spooky has somehow avoided that unfortunate side effect. Could be that he just never uses magic for ill gain, and therefore never goes mad with power — although depending on how rare magic users are, it seems kind of unlikely that he’d be the only one not to use it badly.

It also makes me wonder about Sircea — there’s only been one scene with her so far, but she didn’t give off a crazy vibe or anything. She seemed just as with it as Duncan. So I’m curious about what exactly constitutes “sane” in a magical context.

    • Heh

I think she meant, by sane, ‘ using its powers for good’. Spooks mentions Platinum Priestess in a a bad way for Kyle even before those two met, and if i remember it correctly [ could be my sleepy brain playing tricks on me ], spooks mentions the ritual – making people she uses to hide her location as ‘ crazies’.

      • silibub

He did call them “crazies,” which I guess isn’t a particularly unusual way to refer to minions or acolytes or whatever their relationship to her is. Whatever the effect of magic on sanity is, it’s probably much more subtle than just “BOOM, nice spell, genius — now you’re nutzo!”

        • Klaus

They need not be her minions or acolytes. She has somehow manipulated many independent groups or individuals who dabble in magic into choosing this day for “noisy” rituals.

          • silibub

That could be! It would take a lot of planning and accounting for unknown risks, but supposedly Duncan and Sircea have been at this for years so it’s not out of the question.

        • Heh

Indeed. Maybe magic is like poison? The more you use it, the worse your sanity gets? That would explain why spooky is sane, while others are not.

      • stickfigurefairytales

I think it depends on whether Amanda is using the word “sane” literally or facetiously. If it’s the latter, it might very well refer to those who do bad things with their knowledge (as well as perhaps the occasional highly eccentric academic). I kind of like the idea of the former, though…I’m kind of imagining that all magic and dealing with demons carries the potential to result in insanity, but that it might be more a matter of proper control or balance in the interactions than some sort of cumulative effect. We’ll have to wait to see if we find out.

        • Heh

I agree. Im hoping the next page clarifies this.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I don’t know if we’ll find out next page, but maybe someday.

    • I was just wondering about Sircea’s sanity myself. Does it takes a certain personality, a strength of character that keeps them sane? Or were they just lucky?

      • silibub

Or maybe the nature of magic in this world is such that using it for evil purposes is insane, in the sense that it’s unreasonably dangerous? Ugh, so many possibilities…

    • The demon in/as Spooky’s hat feeds on the things that turn magic users crazy therefore keeping Spooky sane?

      • Kate G

        How’s you Brother-in-law?

        • Fine I think for now, haven’t heard anything otherwise.

    • SofiaT

      Very, very good point…

I wonder though, if Sircea is losing (or has lost) her sanity, wouldn’t Duncan had made a stipulation about that in his request to Laampros?
Unless neither of them is aware of that side-effect… Which wouldn’t make much self.
And why is Spooky immune? Is it because of the type of magic he yields? Is it because he was in Hell and came back in one piece?
Is Sircea immune to magic-induced insanity too? And if so, does that mean she’s taken her own hellish trip?

      So many questions!

      • Klaus

What Amanda considers insanity the PP may consider something else. True awareness, enlightment, or something like that.

        • silibub

Especially if she’s some kind of cult leader like people were speculating on an earlier page.

        • SofiaT

I agree with that. But I still think Duncan would have noticed. And if he has any care for her (and I believe he has), he’d make a specific request about it to Laampros.

I guess time and the comic will tell… Getting closer now!

          • Klaus

To have her changed into what Laampros considers sane?

      • silibub

I mean, Duncan did ask for “perfect health” in addition to youth, which would presumably include mental health, but I figured he clarified that as a matter of common sense. It wouldn’t do any good to be youthful and immortal while also suffering from a painful and incurable disease, for instance.

I figure if the Protectors know magic can make you crazy, then it’s more or less common knowledge. Or in any case, if Spooky knows, it’s safe to assume that Sircea knows as well (I’m kind of assuming that she’s one of the other, less “sane” experts on demons and magic since she’s pulling off this ritual.)

The idea that they both might be immune because of time spent in hell is really interesting! Maybe it’s a kind of trial that most people would never undertake, or at least not of their own volition…

    • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

“Crazy” and “insane” are not well-formed utterances in modern psychology, as reflected e.g. in the DSM-5. Sircea may appear high-functioning, but in view of her plans for the world, obviously suffers from narcissism and sociopathy.

    • EyeDontNo

Perhaps it is “Sane as in able to fit in with acceptable society without complex difficulties” instead of “Sane as in able to properly see to one’s own needs without assistance”. As each society defines its own normal, the first definition would deal with a Hindu trying to live in a purely Christian society (BAD EXAMPLE?) as opposed to the second definition which would deal with a person whose main focus is on some obsession (?) instead of on regular hygiene or food intake.
It sounds as if most people who become experts on magic and demons become so engrossed in Demon society that they forget how human society works, leaving them unable to fit into acceptable human society. (I certainly hope that the study of demons doesn’t make a person forget that they are human to the point that they forget to take care of their human body properly.)
On the other hand, if the second option is actually true, then Spooky would most likely have avoided the expected result by surrounding himself with people to remind him constantly that he is human and must think like one.

    • purplefoxglove

The way I read this, it’s the demon part that drives people crazy, not the magic part – so if the PP sticks to magic and stays clear of demons, she’s remotely safe…but that’s just a guess.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Dang it, I forgot about camping!

  • TwilightDreamer

Amanda really is a great leader to them 🙂 She’s making it clear to Tsunami that she’s not against him, even though she’s putting her foot down on it.
Lol, wow…feels like forever since we last heard Kyle speak 😛
I’m pretty interested to hear what Spooky says…I know he trusts kyle to not let them down, but at the same time I don’t know that it’ll be that straight forward…

  • stickfigurefairytales

I kind of like the idea of some of the demon and magic experts being crazy not in the sense of completely insane (though I am sure there are many who fit this definition) but who are extraordinarily eccentric to the point of being a little past sane. Like one who lives in a cave and refuses to ever come out. Or one who absolutely hates the color green.

    • SofiaT

Now I’m thinking of Prof. Trellawney* and Luna! 😀
      I like that idea too!
…Or maybe the ones who can use magic, use it for their own benefit, dark-magic kinda thing? Unlike Spooky who uses his magic to help others?

For Amanda, anyone who would use magic for evil maybe would qualify as insane?

*btw, I always wondered if her name was no accident and JK Rowling had done her linguistiic research: “trele” in greek means “crazy”

      • David Welbourn

Many many names in the Harry Potter series have meanings relating to the personalities of those people, as I’m sure many websites have already detailed.

        • SofiaT

I don’t doubt it; although Trellawney and Lupin (and Luna, because it sounds like “looney”) were the only ones that “hit” me when I was reading the books the first time.
But JK Rowling is a fantastic author who paid a lot of attention to detail when she created her universe. I’m sure there are a lot of things I missed. I keep finding new clues every time I re-read the books.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That reminds me of a thing I saw on tumblr about how we know why Fenrir Greyback bit Lupin according to Rowling (as retaliation against his parents), but actually turning someone into a werewolf whose name is essentially “Werewolf McWerewolf” was too good to resist. 😀

          • silibub

I remember having a pet theory that Luna either was or would become a werewolf because of her moon-based name — the Luna/loony connection honestly didn’t occur to me until way later!

      • Maus Merryjest

Prof. Trelawney was always one of my favorites. She was totally bonkers, but she had oodles of courage. I can’t say more without giving away spoilers to those who have not read the last books, but man… the crystal balls…

      • timemonkey

I never got the crazy vibe from Trellaney. I got the ‘I’m hamming it up because my entire act is a fake’ vibe from her. She was perfectly normal whenever she wasn’t paying attention to keeping her act up.

    • strangeangel24601

And I like the idea of them being like that not because of dealing with demons and magic, but because they were just kind of always like that. Pure coincidence.

      • stickfigurefairytales

  • This is a page of emotions and info.
Amanda is stepping up to bat and takes command. In the question of doing the over all good, she’s ready to let her small birds fly… figurative, since Mitch is already doing it literally.

I think it’s quite telling how fast Tsunami calmed down and let Amanda command. Even though they share the guardianship of the minors, Amanda is the final leader and he’ll follow that – even when he’s worried about the others. He’ll argue with Paul, because he shouldn’t question his authority, but he will follow Amanda’s decissions.
She let Kyle have a saying, but to calm everyones mind (maybe mostly Tsunami) she does ask Spooky for the final word on it.

Speaking of, this scene has made me wonder a bit about Spooky. Amanda and Spooky has known eachother the longest, and from what I’ve understood they were the ones who started Young Protectors. Still it’s Amanda and Tsunami who are the ones sharing guardianship over the minors.
Amanda is 22, Tsunami 21 and Spooky 20 at current timeline. Was it an age factor when the group was started, making Spooky a minor, or didn’t he want that responsibility? Did Spooky want to be out of the chain of command in the group?

Maybe, given Spooky’s past, he was denied as a guardian (this given that he HAD turned 18 when Fluke and/or Kyle joined). There’s several possibilities, also some not mentioned, but why aren’t Spooky 2nd in command in the group?

That’s something I’ve thought about before, but Amanda’s mention of Spoky being the only sane expert on magic and demons made the thought pop up again.

About the sane part. That leads the thinking on to Sircea. She didn’t appear to be typical insane when we saw her – if you look past the idea of having a demon king take over most of the world – but maybe Amanda’s use of sane is just as much that Spooky is the only one who hasn’t let the major powers corrupt him.
Magic powers and the ability to conjure demons. Letting those powers consume you is also a type of insanity. Sircea isn’t insane in the ‘being outright bonkers’ way, but she is doing no good with the powers she has.
    Quite the opposite.

  • Toli Bera

    *Pulls chord* “…No.”

    • Cydney Sabin

      • Toli Bera

        aaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy 😀

  • Justinius Phoenix

FInally Amanda asks the million dollar question!!!

  • Alex, I have to give you major serious kudos for giving us great adult dialog. Seldom, outside of smart prose in some book, do we find adults in moments of high drama, speaking and acting LIKE adults in moments of high drama. Amanda is so very smart here it’s like a cold refreshing splash.

“As for Kyle, there are only two people on this boat who can answer whether he’d be a liability down there — and that’s Kyle and Spooky. Kyle says he’s up for this.”

    Isn’t that it exactly?

And didn’t Spooky speak to this once (prior to the Bonus comic) when he did the mystic inspection on Kyle’s naked self (a version of turn your head and cough)? Well, Kyle got the clean report then. And just a few pages ago in panel 3… Spooky again reaffirmed his faith that Kyle was okay to be one of the team.

I know there are lots of other things that were messing up the teams communications lines just a few pages ago, but our Commander takes a scalpel and says, “homophobia, betrayal of friendships(?), who know’s best(?)… etc…” Amanda just cuts all that away. She doesn’t deny it or judge it, but she focuses the whole group right down to the bone and says, THIS is what we are focused on. Saving the world, in whatever way we’re needed.

Amanda may be an example of what they say about girls maturing faster than boys, but don’t tell the girls, they’re already impossibly smug sometimes. 🙂 Silliness aside, Amanda demonstrates JUST AWESOME LEADERSHIP. Which one of us doesn’t wish for this kind of leadership in life. Well well portrayed.

How impressive is Kyle? Damn. In panel two he gives Tsunami a fairly calculating look. No gloating. No hate. Just a hard look that says, “I agree with the Commander!” I find it impressive because, if it were me, I’d be a dick and say something unforgivable that would only prove that I couldn’t manage my temper. I know we’ve been told Kyle is our hero, but his one line (in how many pages?) is heroic… “I won’t let you down guys. I WON’T” I intend to be like this in my next life. Ooooookay, Alex this is just a lovely adult character showing very (human) behavior. So well done. All compliments.

Adam and Veronica… I have nothing profound to say except, “thank you.” So many great frames and really subtle facial expressions all throughout the page. However that last panel. Amanda just looks tough and beautiful, nice juxtaposition. I also love Kyle’s look. Yeah that’s what happens when you get beat up enough. Even though Spooky has repeatedly supported him… poor Kyle doesn’t know what to trust. Who’s going to turn on him now? It’s heartbreaking, but boy-hero is growing up and, right now, he’s not taking trust for granted. I’m not trying to over-dramatize, but that’s what coming out” and growing up is like. When people you love suddenly drop-kick you, and people you weren’t sure of… stick with you…? You realize that you don’t know anybody any more and you learn to guard your heart more carefully.

Duncan was the first to teach Kyle that you shouldn’t trust people, Tsunami shows him a bit more. We’re watching Kyle grow up the hard way. I love this expression in this final panel. I think it speaks to the fact that as hard as it is, Kyle is learning to be careful and be ready to expect anything. He’s growing up.

Alex, Adam and Veronica — This is great work and a formidable page full of character growth. Just wonderful stuff. Thank you.

    • Very nice analysis, Chris, especially of Amanda and Kyle. And insightful reference to the coming out process. Nicely done. 🙂

  • AseretZone

Oh gosh. Now everyone is looking at Spooky for “The Answer”, even though he’s too busy with his magical cheerios to get involved. My guess is that he’s going to say something dramatic and validating and then look back and say “Found them. That’s the one.”

Good on Kyle for not being a gloating little brat. 🙂 He’s very mature, most adults wouldn’t be as calm as he is in this situation. Then again, he had his moments of self-blame, he got comforted, and now he’s sure that he can stand up against them and not be a bother/danger.

Tsunami and Fluke seem to have a seriously aggressive relationship going. Like, they hardly ever get along, and when they do it’s great.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Red Hot does us proud. There are times when he’s stuffed up, but they were clearly because of inexperience rather than lack of trying.

And you’re right, now that he’s getting his self-blame under control it looks like he’s going to be good at the ‘mature superhero’ thing. I have been worried in the past about him getting the balance on that right.

  • egon099

Man this comic is awesome. I would so wish this to be daily comic. But I guess that would be humanly impossible.

  • Nate

I think folks may be misreading Amanda’s comments about magic & sanity.

I don’t think Alex means to imply magic makes you crazy… but dealing with demons? Different story.

Also, I want to give Mitch a cuddle. Not for any emotional support reason, I just want to. 🙂

    • zunden

I thought they said in the back story that, in this world, magic often does drive people insane? Or, at least, that’s the stereotype/common assumption about sorcerers: They all go insane eventually?

      • Cydney Sabin

We’re all a little insane. It’s just whether our insanity fits everyone else’s. Just my opinion.

        • zunden

Well, it’s pretty much a fact that any given person will have at least one symptom of insanity. The question is not one of presence or absence, but one of degrees. 🙂

    • mmmm MItch cuddles….yes….

  • arobynbird

I love this comic. I also love Artifice. but I was going through my old files and came a crossed “Tough” and I have to say I am still weighting for the third installment on that story. I am a great big geek and love the si-fi and super hero stuff, but I still think that “I think hitting anyone with a bat is wrong” is the most heroic thing Alex has written. Any one here anything about this story continuing, or is it done?

    • Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m really glad to hear you’ve enjoyed my Tough chapters. While that story is still dear to my heart, due to artist commitments, it is currently on hiatus with no plans to resume in the foreseeable future. If that changes, I’ll definitely make a lot of noise about it through my site, the Twitters and the Facebooks. But as of right now, with The Young Protectors taking so much of my focus, I wouldn’t expect any movement on that anytime soon. :/

I do hope you’ll continue to enjoy my webcomics, though! 🙂

  • zunden

I know this is a common topic, but can I just say how much I love the Commander? Like, really?

  • Pikinanou

If Spooks thinks Kyle could harm them, is he going to lie to save his friend’s honor? I honestly believe he’s going to say no or that he doesn’t know yet, but, still, would he say it? That could hurt their friendship, if he said yes, but it would save their friends, instead.
I guess we won’t know until next update :3

  • Miri

“Of course he *could* hurt us – he can shoot flames at people! He could kill us all right now if he wanted to! But this is Kyle. He won’t!”

“If a portal is opened, it may affect his powers. So long as he doesn’t get distracted and is prepared for that, it won’t affect his control. To be frank, I don’t think we have a chance without him, though.”

“They might be expecting to use him in their ritual. If they are, they’ve underestimated me. I’ve taken precautions against that, and I can assure you I haven’t underestimated them.”

“Pretty certain that Kyle’s dad would not take kindly to them using his son – again. Knowingly. It’d be a really stupid move on their part – and they’re not known for making stupid moves.”

“Kyle, are you playing us for fools to get a lift to your silver fox to beg him to take you back? If so, Gordon has my permission to give you a thorough spanking. If he doesn’t want to touch your butt in case he catches teh gay, I suggest you either administer your own spanking, or order him to, Amanda. Now can you stop being ridiculous and let me concentrate?”*

^ All things Spooky might say… Four days until we find out 😀

    * If he goes down this route, there might be an interjection to Mitch to pay attention… 😉

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Yes please, some of this.
Hmm. But should Spooky’s reply be a dry and pointedly sarcastic response, or an example of completely over-the-top hyperbole like #5? [#5 is the one that made me sporfle with laughter]

*wide eyed innocence* These are all serious suggestions he could make! I mean, if Kyle killed them all then and there, that’d include Mitch, and that’d make the plane crash! He’s not suicidal – he won’t do that! And if he were to want to rekindle things with Duncan, he’d deserve to have Gordon give him a thorough spanking!

OK, suggested responses two and three were serious and non-snarky! 😉

As much as No. 5 is funny, I’m voting for No. 1. A nice snarky, sarcastic call for perspective.

I read the page this morning and yet I seem to have forgotten to say sth about it oO
This is the state of mind I’m in…. after exams…. thank god they’re over!

well to make it short: we know now who’s the one wearing the pants ^^
Not that we didn’t suggest it before but now it’s definite 🙂

I’m curious how Spooky will react to the question… even if Kyle would not be needed by them for whatever, he could still lie to Amanda to protect Kyle?
But then again if it really came to a battle, they sure would need his assistance…. gosh, I’m happy to not be the one deciding this, it’s really hard…

  • Adam Irving

That’s an excellent question. *envisions a sudden fall into the water* Of course, it’s not like Spooky isn’t focused elsewhere, like finding these super bad guys.

One of the things I like about this comic is the slight (sometimes not so slight) suspension from one page to the next. Later readers will not have to wait to follow the story, they can just turn the page, but it’s a good storyteller who doesn’t coast at all even over the course of a few pages. There is always something at the end to propel the reader on, which is appreciated in the normal consumption of printed material and doubly so in a format like this. Thanks!

    • Thank you, Adam. It’s something I like as well as a reader so it’s something that’s always on my mind as I’m scripting, especially when I’m pacing out the panels per page. I think designing this for the webcomic format makes me focus on that even more so that I look very close on exactly how I end each page, but if this were a prose work, I’d be doing it for chapter breaks and I’d still be looking hard at the interior momentum of each chapter to make sure that it was still a “page turner.”

Nice to see that recognized and appreciated. 🙂

Every time I see the Commander (full length) the same thought goes through my mind; “white trousers, how daring”.

    • Her courage knows no bounds.

    • Kate G

Let’s hope it’s not her time of the month. Things could get ugly if it is, especially if her tampon or sanitary napkin isn’t up to snuff.

      Or maybe….maybe she’s sterile.

      That’s a creepy thought.

  • I do find it interesting that Kyle and the Commander both have the same color scheme going. Wonder if it’s just a coincidence.

One of the things I love about this comic is the portrayal of the women. They are all strong characters with heads of their own. They definitely don’t depend on men like you see in so many comics. And….they have reasonably sized breasts! THANK YE GODS FOR THAT! I mean, seriously, I love Wonder Woman and Catwoman and Batgirl, but there is no way they could stand up with those itty bitty waists, big hips and big big boobs (I’m sorry, this has to be said. Men, women don’t look like that, especially athletic women.) I love the proportional women in this comic.

And, I love that Amanda runs a matriarchy. It reminds me sooooooo much of my family. Hey, my dad can go to work and say whatever he wants to to us kids, but if my mom grounded us and Dad attempted to unground us (because we begged)…we get lectured, go back to our rooms with our imaginary tails between our legs and are REGROUNDED for a longer period of time. (That really sucks, I’ll have you know. Do not do this.) I like seeing that Amanda ultimately holds the reins; it’s refreshing. It’s very much my family!

In the movie The Covenant, the idea was that using magic, having that energy use your body as a conduit, caused a tangible rush, like adrenaline and endorphins, and it was addictive. Additionally, we know from observations of the obscenely wealthy that when you can acquire most anything you want with little to no effort or personal investment, people to loose the ability to related to other humans. I could see a combination of “adrenaline junkyism” and simply losing touch with day to day life would cause quiet a lot of magic users to end up in this world’s equivalent of Arkham.

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Maybe too: “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

    • Klaus

In the game Esoterrorists all sorcerors are crazy. This is because the contortions you have to put you mind through to make the magic work are damaging.

Looking through the comments there’s been a fair bit of praise for Commander as a character. I wonder if part of the reason she’s been so awesome in the story is because it’s yaoi written by a gay man.

I feel like a lot of the time female characters are held back rather than moved forward by romantic plots/subplots. Because that’s the only reason they’re written in in the first place or because there seems to be an expectation that they need romantic storylines more than guys to be ‘complete’. They’re downgraded to damsel for it or written out or stuffed in fridges because it will further their partner’s story.

Commander is free of that. It’s a yaoi comic and she can just be the leader of the team and do her job.

  • BurstThrough

She’s the most remarkable woman this entire comic!!!
That and her pattern of speech makes even a gay guy(me) think she’s hot(professional and leadership aptitude are hot on her!)!

  • EMR updated early! ^_^

For those of you that have not yet read Elan Meets Rafa, you can begin reading this wonderful comic here:

@alexwoolfson:disqus Why DO they keep referring to their glider as a boat?? It would make sense if it was “ship”….. Is there a “method to your madness” Alex?
