Tsunami looks like could really use a hug in that last panel. Any takers?

So! Commander has just dished out a few stern words for our crew, including Tsunami. And it seems that if it comes to a fight, she expects the young’uns to pull their weight. Will Tsunami be able to talk her out of it? How will the “kids” react to hearing this green light? And will someone give the big guy a hug?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • The looks on Gordon’s face. So many feels.

    • silibub

Man, your timing was perfect today!

      • Yes! I came online, opened the tabs and this one was a bit slow to react so refreshed, nothing there, and then just to be sure it wasn’t slow I refreshed again right away and voila! 🙂
Wasn’t expecting that and took a second to check that I hadn’t just switched tab since I was gonna say hi in the camp *lol*

        • Ya know, D-Wolf has said this so many times that I now have a picture of her entering her house just as there is about 60 seconds until new page is up. Her arms are full of her work tote bag, walking shoes, a good anime book for breaks, a coffee, with her house keys in her mouth. Suddenly she trips over her rain shoes she left in the entryway. She saves the coffee, drops the tote, falls over and the anime books flies out of her hands and over onto the chair near the bookshelves by the computer, rocking the shelves and causing one of her Teahouse figures to tip over and fall onto the keyboard “JUST HAPPENING” to activate the TYP new page. She quickly types something in and pushes send and, just… like… that… she lands her 1246 virgin.

Right? You can totally see it right? 😀

          • *LOL*.. I almost like these utter suprise V’s better than ones I started the hunt for. They’re a great way to wake up 😉

The best humor in this for me is that I kinda had a moment like this right now (except I turned the computer on on purpose, it was a bottle of water in my hand and I don’t have any Teahouse figures + a couple of other tiny detail :-p) .. but it was for the SF page.

I just got home from my trip, did trip over a pair of shoes, almost dropped my shopping bag, unpacked my tote, (it wasn’t an anime book), put by book next to the computer, turned computer on – and turns out the page was uploaded the same time I did that.
No V for that though. I got sidetracked before I saw the update because a friend gave me the best news in a while and I was distracted for about an hour after that 🙂

    • Phyre Storm

I still want to smack him upside the head.

      • Derkins

        meee tooooo

  • You tell it Amanda!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Amanda makes a number of excellent points.

    • Saxon_Brenton

And, moreover, points that she had already said before.

  • I really wanted to camp lol
I…still am not pleased with Tsunami but at least he’s calming down. Why do boys always need a mother hen?

    • SKB

Because boys don’t inherit a mother hen internal dialogue?

  • davefragments

    Good speech!

  • Heh

That’s it, amanda! Kick some sense into these boys!

  • Kisa ‘Yuki’ Johnson

I was happy to finally be able to make my first donation!! I love this comic please keep the pages coming. We love you!! ♥♥♥

  • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, it’s interesting to me that she calls Fluke/Paul by his superhero name but Flyboy/Mitch by his real name here. Any thoughts on the significance of that?

    • silibub

That’s an interesting point, and could be a subtle indicator that, like a lot of the team members, she sees Mitch as a kid first and a hero second? Which would be unfortunate, considering she’s their leader and presumably recruited him. Dude can’t catch a break!

    • …..The only one she refers to by their super name is Fluke, she calls everyone else by name.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Maybe she just hates the name Paul?

        • silibub

          That would actually be hilarious.

          • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Maybe we’ve got it all backwards, and “Paul” IS his superhero name.

    • Miri

Kyle’s the only one who regularly calls Fluke Paul – I don’t know if it’s partly because Fluke works so well as a nickname, whereas calling somebody Flyboy or Red Hot out of context and costume would be a bit weird?

      • stickfigurefairytales

Now I’m imagining somebody accidentally shouting Kyle or Mitch’s codenames to get their attention when they’re all out of costume, and it’s hilarious.

  • silibub

Amanda’s just. So awesome. Hurgh ♥

    • Heh

I think i just fell in love a little harder with her.

  • Might I give Amanda a high five?

  • mogoskier

She didn’t say that she was putting Kyle in the fight.

    • Kyle is a ‘big boy’ now that he turned 18. In that matter being a day older so the age number changed really count.

    • IamM

Kyle isn’t underage. And if she needs Fluke and Flyboy for the fight she definitely needs Redhot.

She probably should take a moment to remind everyone that if it comes to a fight they need to stay focused on their goal (preventing a demon invasion) and not be distracted by anger.

    • Miri

But she did say that he was a trustworthy and important member of the team, and she’ll need every resource she can have in order for them to win. And it’s not like Kyle could just hang out watching and if anybody tried to engage him say “sorry, I’m not taking part”… If Mitch is taking part, there’s nobody to get Kyle out of the danger zone. I think it’s pretty strongly implied 🙂

  • For a second I was like “I really want Gordon’s tattoos.”
But then I went “Oh yeah. Boobs. Damn.”

    • mogoskier

Yea, that would hurt to get tattoo there.

    • silibub

Aw. Any decent tattoo artist should be able to work with your anatomy to give you a good reproduction of Tsunami’s tattoos, were you to actually get them done! Too bad you wouldn’t get the water powers as a side bonus…

      • Maybe that’s the secret. The tattoos give you special water powers. o.o Now I really want them lol

        • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

A different tattoo would give you YOLO, bacon, or zombie Marilyn powers.

    • Heather Kallinger

Hey, nothing says boobs can’t have awesome tribal tats! And since this is about as big as anyone with breasts seems to have gone, it might end up fairly unique: http://tattoo.about.com/library/graphics/livybreast.jpg

      • Adam Black

        those are nice

      • I’ve never seen anything like that, those are amazing!

        • Heather Kallinger

I agree! I love tattoos, including tribals 😀

  • Amanda swoops in to save the day! (there are also a few bruised toes from the altercation per my prediction the last time 😉 I just wonder now how involved everyone is going to need to get and just what the current situation is whenif they find the right location in time…

  • DC

Hugs to Tsunami. I know his intentions are good, but the Commander speaks sense.

  • fujoshifanatic

Aaand my lady boner just popped for Amanda. Again. Grrr. Me likey decisive women. Panel two is everything. And thank you for redeeming yourself (a little) in the last panel, Gordon! I would give you a hug, then lightly smack you on your ass (hee!) to prompt you to apologize to the “kids,” so you can start evolving already. Time to shift from Papa Bear to co-Team Leader. It is time. That is all.

*goes back to drooling over Comanda*

    • Donald Burch

I read today that Marvel was reimagining Thor as a woman. Not a “new” Thor, not a woman with a hammer but the actual Thor from the comics as a woman. How do you feel about that?

      • Adam Black

Does he get turned into a woman, or reality warped as a woman, or she was in drag for 40 years ?

I think a Gender-bending Loki would be more interesting.

especially if Thor doesnt recognize her….

Def. marvels Loki was often a flat character.
a female Loki is full of potential.

        • Nope, not turned into a woman. Apparently it’s something along the line of the Thor we know is no longer worthy and a woman (I think one he rescued at some point) picks up the hammer and becomes Thor.

          http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=54067

Read some of the comments, it seems to talk about the fact Thor (male) is carrying an ax in Avengers #35.

Whatever it is, I’m going to find a way to check out the new book.

        • Donald Burch

No explanation was given beyond what I mentioned, that it was “The” Thor and not a new character. I agree that a gender-bending or female Loki might be interesting. I understand that the film Loki is going that route in his next appearance. I rather look forward to it!

  • Adam Black

    Great Fucking Page

  • Jen Roberts

Please forgive my lack of intelligent commentary. I am too busy fangirling over Commander.

  • Sapfo

    Amanda the Commander!
    Thouse words are hard.
So this little band of ours, are they going to get out of this or not? To fight and not to fight. That is not a question. It is the future and it is near.

  • Alright last comment before I take off.
Despite the fact that it wasn’t on this page I wanted to point out that I love the “countdown” Spooky has been giving. I know it’s not really a timing countdown, but nevertheless, it still really adds to the suspense. Loving the tense atmosphere.

  • samae

A thought that just came to mind, with Amanda’s abilities, isn’t there a possibility that she was already aware of Scott’s sexual identity crisis? Though she strikes me as more of not intruding in someones mind unless it’s necessary kind of gal.

    • IamM

The way telepaths are portrayed in the Marvel Universe, yeah you’d expect some base level awareness of the emotional state and reactions and the occasionally overheard surface thought of the people around them.

      • Maus Merryjest

That is possible– but also, I get the impression Amanda wouldn’t go poking inside a team-mate’s attic unless she had his permission… or unless she had a very good reason to suspect something terrible was going on, such as possession or brainwashing.

If it is possible for telepaths in this universe to shield themselves, I’d imagine Amanda would resort to it so as not to invade their privacy. What went on with Spooky was definitely a “There’s something BAD going on” situation, and she needed to know.

        • Adam Black

This strikes me as a similar situation.

Plus I think Kyle would want his mind read, to remove doubts about sincerity and loyalty.

In his situation, its a benefit that levels all doubts like Gordon has.

        • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

This sounds like a polite lie telepaths tell people.

    • Phyre Storm

      Who’s Scott?

      • samae

Oh god that’s embarrassing, i meant Kyle. I’ve been editing a short novel for the past 3 hours whose main protag is named Scott. I am shamed (TT-TT)

        • Phyre Storm

Heh, never mind. I thought it was some kind of running comparison with Scott Summers (Cyclops) that I wasn’t getting because I’m newish. They do have pretty much the same hair.

          • samae

oh my god they do 0.0!

          • Maus Merryjest

            But Kyle is more likeable!

But the two of them do seem to have an affinity for accidentally setting people on fire- the one by losing his visor, the other one by… well.

          • samae

            hehe

          • Miri

I can never tell if we’re supposed to like Scott or not… I mean, he’s definitely a good guy, he has interesting back-story, faces some tough challenges… But he’s got such a big stick up his backside! 😉

        • Donald Burch

I thought you meant Scott McCall from “Teen Wolf.” D’oh!

          • samae

yup. the short novel is a tw fanfic

          • Donald Burch

I guessed right? Do I get a cookie?

          • samae

Only if you ship sterek ^.^ or at the least, not Stalia

  • Bummed that I missed camping. Too much stuff to do before I go on this trip.

I really like the look Mitch and Spooky are giving each other in that first panel. The close-ups and Spooky’s partial face. Plus, you can see all the details that make them so different. Their eyebrows, skin tone, and though they both have dark hair, Mitch’s is more violet blue while Spooky’s hair has streaks of dark teal. Kudos to both Adam and Veronica for this perspective.

Amanda, tough and gorgeous! Very well thought out way to lay down the law!

Lastly, I do feel a bit sorry for Gordon. He just wants to keep everyone safe but the truth is there’s a storm swirling around, gathering speed, and the I have a feeling it’s going to take every ounce of everyone’s will, participation, courage, and resourcefulness to beat it back. I hope no one gets hurt (see, i’m just like Gordon).

  • Gaah, so much to talk about but I don’t have the time this morning. I’m going to be picked up soon for a one-day road trip, driving 450 miles today (to German boarder and back) 🙂

Until I can comment later I just want to say that I’m all in for hugs. There’s several of them who looks like they could need one – yes, don’t shoot me but I want to hug Gordon as well – and I want to hug them even if they don’t look like they need it. I NEED IT.

I’m also worried about our little flock of heroes. It’s a very dangerous situation they face and if going into a fight really soon, maybe/probably not all will come home unharmed D:
I both look forward to, but also fear the moment when Spooky goes from ‘down to two’ to ‘down to one’.

    • Safe travels, Danish! Have fun on the way to the German border.

I echo your comments about hugs all around. We all need it, I think.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I can’t believe I’m only just wondering this now, but is the darker tone of Commander’s speech foreshadowing?
Do we start the rather grim process of laying bets on who gets Fridged? 🙁

      • Miri

        *Is worried you’re right*

      • I’ve been worried about them going intoa battle for weeks, no months. Remembering the poor close-up fightong skills Kyle showed in the prologue along with Tsunami pointing out said lack of skills only made it worse.

    • purplefoxglove

Weeh, Danish drops by for a visit…well, it’s just to the border, but still! Welcome, and have a safe trip! 😀

      • Thank you, I had fun. We drove around and went to six of the various super markets on the german side of the border. Spent 7 hours doing that, and my feet are sore xD

        • purplefoxglove

Aw, poor Danish – maybe we can get Spooky to visit you for a foot massage? 😉

  • Steven K.

Wow – it’s rather amazing all the different ways they are looking at one-another.

  • I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to get Amanda annoyed. That’s what I’m taking from Mitch’s and Spooky’s expressions.

    • I accidentally kicked a hole in the wall once and my dad who never gets mad makes this same face… they have learned from experience! XD

      • Maus Merryjest

I think it’s a good idea to get Amanda annoyed– At other people!

  • Maus Merryjest

So Amanda got up and put things into perspective:
We fight, we MIGHT get killed, including the minors.
We don’t fight, we WILL get killed. Along with

  • David Welbourn

Glad to hear Commander say all that. I am in complete agreement with her.

(I am, of course, also curious about all the untold stories implied by learning that Kyle has saved their lives “many times over”. Have they really been in life-or-death situations that often before now?)

I’m not at all sure if Gordon is the hugging type. For all I know, he might be more into arm punches. But, yeah, closure on this topic (for now) seems needed. Perhaps Tsunami can let loose with his rallying cry: “It’s Watering Time!”

    • Mary Klemzak

      “Watering time”!

      *dead* lol!

    • Ha!

    • Donald Burch

      “Gots ta take a tinkle…”

    • HA!
      “Watering Time”
      (going viral in 5,4,3,2…….)

      • Adam Black

Suddenly wonders if Tsunami’s power is also sex-based ?
        ( rubber sheets )

  • Mary Klemzak

Yeaaaahhh!! That’s how you Mamma Bear it!

As for giving Tsunami/Gordon a hug, I’ll consider it, but after, he’ll be getting a big whack in the head! They are TEAMMATES.

And gosh, Gordon likes to be a snarkster, don’t he? Good grief!

  • Klaus

So, Tsunami: are YOU ready to fight the most feared supervillain in the world, a major magic wielder, and whatever allies and minions they may have gathered?

    • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. I’m thinking he would be, but I’m wondering whether it’s because he knows he has to do this, as a (as he sees it) responsible adult – as compared to because he wants to do it (as he seems to think those other, testosterone-deranged teenagers want to).

  • Donald Burch

My, my, my, Tsunami is an energetic ball of optimism isn’t he? I’ve never served in the military and I never pretend to know better but to me it looks like Commander should either yank Gordon to the side and dress him down to “get with it” or she needs to do major morale damage control. If anyone saw the movie “Aliens II” it reminds me of the panicked marine. “Game over man, game over!” My response, “STFU before I feed you to them!”

Alex, I’m excited and on the edge of my seat for what happens next. Thanks! Adam and Veronica, you never get enough praise in my opinion and you deserve it for your hard work here. Beautiful work all of you!

    • Maus Merryjest

It reminded me of “Game over!” too.

But I’m sure Commander has the Konami Code squirrelled away, right?

      • Donald Burch

“I say we nuke them from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.” Commander and Ripley go well together in my mind.

        • Maus Merryjest

In some alternate dimension, this is a teamup that has already happened… and are all poorer for not seeing it.

        • Jen Roberts

          They can BILL me!

    • Thank you, Donald. 🙂

    • Midwestmutt

There have been Generals who are never quite ready for a fight but always need more men, more supplies, whatever. McClellan comes to mind. An excellent administrator but a timid fighter.

  • EMR has updated! ^_^ http://elanmeetsrafa.com/the-comic/ch21pg1/
and don’t forget it is two pages! ^_^
    ^_^ ^_^ ^_^

    • Maus Merryjest

More webcomics to add to my list. This and King of Cats will take up my time for quite a bit as I catch up 😛

      • *Prince ^_^ and I have a list of comics I recommend ^_^ If you would like. ^_^

  • What Adam Black said:

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-43#comment-1487465737

Team Woolfson, you guys give really great page.

This is a truly great character page, in every panel, and when I’m properly awake I’ll probably have to blab a bit more about how much emotion you’ve managed to pack in here verbally and visually. Love it.

One note. Sudden contrast is one of the best and most underrated of dramatic tools and this page is a superb example of it. The tension has steadily built over the last few pages… to the point that I think some this group’s feisty energy last weekend had been fed by the growing tension between our YP ‘family’. These are characters we’ve come to care about so the dysfunction is hard not to internalize.

Not really an excuse for RL silliness, but I think many of us could simply feel a tension. I know I was worried about Kyle feeling so unwelcome that he’d strap on a parachute and pop out the back door, thinking he was the problem… a place he goes to all too easily

Many of us were really worried that Tsunami was in a ball of confusion on several levels and we want to LIKE Tsunami, so that added to it. I think everyone feared Tsunami might say that one thing that can’t be taken back… those are scary arguments in family situations.

Then there is Paul fighting the good loyal fight, a fight his heart won’t let him back down from… however right or wrong.

Poor Mitch, feeling so put upon and yet nailed to the front of the jet and arguably sharing the most important job(s) with Spooky. Our joyful funny Spooky, you could see how unhappy he was at this mounting misery and yet he could not take his eyes of the magic cheerios in order to help.

    Serious tension all around.

This page is so great in the way that it contrastingly flips 180° and snaps that tension clean OFF. Sure there is still plenty of emotion to be dealt with, but Amanda is so clear and so right, that even though the guys are still confused in the specifics (understandable, since these issues don’t resolve in minutes, hours, days or) … but suddenly there is no ‘fight’. “Enough!” I could ‘feel’ that on the last page and it’s clearer here.

That group feels her rightness and the entire tension between the group snaps and people start to breath. Don’t get me wrong. Not over. Not solved. Amanda just makes it perfectly clear that, WE ARE NOT GOING TO SOLVE THINGS THIS WAY! If ever there was an unspoken, “Because I said so.” in a scene, it’s right there.

Lot’s of trouble to come and problems unsolved, but Amanda is truly an awesome character. I believed her in every frame and, unlike some of the complex nature of Tsunami’s anger (what does he mean by…?), Amanda is crystal clear.

I don’t mean to bring down the tone here, but this gay man thinks our Commander is pretty darn hot in this scene. Confidence is just damn sexy. Fact!

I feel like I can hear everyone breathe a sigh of relief, even if it’s for a moment.

Really great work. Thank you Alex, Adam and Veronica as usual you guys truly don’t disappoint.

    • Nicely stated, mr. Dangerfield. *pets white persian cat*

    • Thank you so much, Christopher. I love reading your page analyses and this is an especially fun one. Really nice. 🙂

    • And you just nailed it again 🙂

  • strangeangel24601

Commander doesn’t mince words, does she?

  • Klaus

I find it interesting how Commander seems to own the team. Back in the interlude, she says “I used budget”. Now whe says “I am going to need every resource I have” in panel three. In panel six she says “we”, though.

  • David Welbourn

It just occurred to me that Tsunami’s sad face in the last panel might mean he’s thinking about an episode in the past where he — or someone else he knew — wasn’t ready. Makes you think, were there any previous members of The Young Protectors?

    • Klaus

If a member had died in action, there would be no team. That is how I read this:

      http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch2-page-11/

      • David Welbourn

Oh right. Still, there might be something less extreme that happened. Or maybe he’s thinking about what happened to an adult superhero in another team.

        • Klaus

          Or a non-super friend.

        • Jay Demetrick

          Maybe a mentor?

  • Yay!

Stayed up doing work…bleh…boring dreary stuff of listing my artwork for sale on Etsy and Artfire…so it’s just tediously inputting this and that…

    BUT HEY!

    New comic!

    YAY!

Anyway, Amanda makes exactly my point that I forgot to share earlier-

Even if much of the team has no combat experience, that’s really irrelevant in this kind of crisis because hey, who the fuck cares whether or not you’re a minor or inexperienced or just a kid when you’re probably the only thing standing between everyone else and utter annihilation.

I mean really? Who’s going to waste time quibbling about whether or not one should risk combat without actual combat experience when it’s a complete emergency?

This strikes me as one of those all-hands-on-deck moments and my feeling is that when that rolls around it’s time for everyone to jump into the fray whether or not they’re ready because honestly, there probably won’t be anything left anyway if the crisis isn’t averted.

  • Kiri

There’s the big difference between Tsunami and Commander.

Tsunami thinks they WILL win this, and his papa bear is on for the younger and more vulnerable members who he doesn’t want to lose.

Commander thinks they CAN win this but only if all fight. And it looks like Commander is already knowing that if they lose people, it will be unavoidable but necessary. Commander has the big picture going here.

The confidence that Tsunami has of winning would suggest that he’s personally never lost a war as a super before. But his papa bear about the young and in his mind unready, suggests that he has been involved in a situation where he lost people dear to him because of this sort of thing. (and no, it doesn’t have to be supers)

I amazed at how defeated he looks in the last panel – really great work. It’s all in those eyes and the head pose.

The other thing Commander does very nicely, is deflate the whole ‘We’re old enough to fight’ vibe from the young’uns. She’s not saying they’re old enough to fight – she’s saying regardless of age or readiness they have to fight – and you can see that in their faces. It’s not the victory over Tsunami that they were looking for.

Excellent work Alex, Veronica and Adam. The story is lovely and complex, the artwork is immaculate – and the nuances in both story and art is exquisite. Thank you!

    • Thank you, Kiri—for the very kind words and the thoughtful analysis. Nice! 🙂

  • AseretZone

*hugs Tsunami* Aww, you mean well. It’s just that she has a point. All the big guys are out, you’re all that’s standing between peace and Hell on Earth. The kids gotta join the fight and help get rid of the bad guys.

Yeesh, Spooky could probably tell what would happen to Mitch and Fluke. Especially Mitch. He’s young and cute and a pretty young thing that demons will be all over like they were to Spooky. Not a good image.

I like how subdued everyone is, even Spooky and Mitch are paying attention (while focusing on their assigned tasks). Amanda’s definitely not that little girl we saw in the flashback that police questioned being there anymore.

The art is great, poses, expressions, and words all work together to convey what is being said and the backgrounds are always a treat as well. Also, I gotta say, it’s a good thing they have those straps with all the dipping Mitch has been doing. Without those, they’d be falling over onto each other and some awkward positions might occur.

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

And if the demons break through, we’ll ALL be bottoms.

  • bronakopdin

    …. yes ma’am ….

I’m literally silent in front of my screen here xD

    poor Gordon ^^

  • TwilightDreamer

    Thank you Amanda….^^
Doh! ><' Gordon, I was angry at you before…don't go pulling the sad look now and make me feel bad!! XD
Still, nice to see that he cares for real 🙂

  • Pikinanou

Have my bro hug, Tsunami 🙂

  • Niggle

    I um…panel six, Tsunami’s boobs are gigantic O_O

In sadder news, I just realized his nickname is the same nickname of someone I knew who recently passed away. 🙁

    • Keneu

Can I offer you a virtual hug?

      • Niggle

        Virtual hugs are quite acceptable.

        • Keneu

          Alright *hugs*
It’s weird how some of the randomest things remind us of the ones that aren’t here anymore.

    • Steven K.

Hi. Sorry for your loss. I just lost my dear mom rather suddenly and unexpectedly in early June, and she was the only stable loving person in my life since my father passed a few years ago, and I’ve felt so alone and miss her so much already – so I know what you are going through. Maybe that’s another reason I’m back to commenting – because when I’m interacting with the community here, I don’t feel so alone or lonely. I hope it helps you as well. Oh, and btw, I suppose if you wanted, you could call them his pecs 😉

      • Klaus

I am sorry to hear it. I wish I could tell you something that would help you, but of course there is no such thing.

      • Niggle

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, losing a parent must be very hard. ~lots of hugs~ Glad commenting here is offering some comfort. Everyone here is so nice, I would be surprised otherwise.

It feels like an odd year, two people I know have died. And I was unable to attend any services for them. 🙁

        [Pecs are boring. ;)]

  • Sky-Byte-Haiku

I usually don’t comment here (not that I don’t like the community), but I just had to say that I am so impressed, Alex, with the way you’ve written Amanda. I came to this comic for well written gay themes, and on top of it I find an amazingly well written female leader. As a woman I find the way female characters are so often portrayed to be disheartening and painful, and at most times I feel like there’s no point even trying to find better depictions because it just feels like they aren’t out there. I’m glad to be proven wrong for a change.

I love that she just is who she is, and that happens to be a strong, capable person. So often when we do get a great female character, the story is constantly reminding us that she is those things AND a woman, it’s like when people gush over how smart their dog is for doing a trick. Anyway, better stop myself before I write a huge rant here, but I just wanted to say thank you for making a female character who’s identity isn’t constantly defined by stereotypes of her gender, or by sex, but instead by a solid backstory and well defined personality. It means a lot to me. 🙂

    • SofiaT

      Hear, hear!!

    • Klaus

Huge rants are welcome here. At least they are when they are as insightful as your first comment.

    • Thank you. It’s something I strive for with all my characters, and I’m very glad you think I hit the target here. 🙂

There’s a very interesting discussion going on right now about “Strong Female Characters” in the media. (I particularly liked this article.) My own belief is that what’s being discussed applies not only to female characters, but also to characters of any group traditionally marginalized in mainstream fiction.

As a writer, I find exploring a character’s agency to be both fun and essential to creating a compelling story. We are all the protagonists of our own stories and we (usually) don’t define ourselves soley by the labels the mainstream puts on us but I think it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that the same thing is true for people who are different than us. When I am writing a character, even when they aren’t part of the “supporting cast” of a particular arc, I always do my best to see them as the protagonist of their own story, instead of a tool for the plot or eye-candy for my audience.

And, as Robinson sums it up: So maybe all the questions can boil down to this: Looking at a so-called Strong Female Character, would you—the writer, the director, the actor, the viewer—want to be her? I think that’s a good test. I use it for the villains, but I especially keep it in mind for my heroes. And Commander is definitely a hero. 🙂

      • Miri

“WyldStyle actually turns to her current boyfriend for permission to dump him so she can give herself to Emmet as a reward for his success.”

😮 WHAT?! “I know I am currently your property, rather than a person with agency, but he so deserves a token girl and that’s me! Are you cool with that? He has earned me…”

Ignoring the bit where apparently part of the plot apparently involves this Emmet group completely ignoring her when she tries to tell him what’s happening, and apparently thinks that turning “strong female character” into “nagging wet blanket” is appropriate… Just, no… For the love of all that’s good, no! Please no?

I… May have discovered why I rarely see films now. This makes me both sad and very angry.

Alex, even when you have stories which do not involve many female characters, it doesn’t come across as being because you don’t think they’re worthy. PP actually scares me more than Duncan – I get the impression that she’s at least as powerful and intelligent as him, but without having the compassion that he tries to suppress in himself. She’s almost certainly a sociopath, and embraces that, because it allows her to find more control and power. Amanda is just made of pure win, and takes after her mother 🙂

While there isn’t exactly a gender balance in YP, it is a small team, and the relationships you’ve built between the boys would not be the same if one or more of them was a girl (if nothing else, it would have meant that it would be clear from the Interlude if Tsunami had a problem with porn, homosexuality, or seeing sexual images of him and his teammates (who he’s clearly quite protective of) getting it on together… Mitch as a Michelle may almost work – but as it is, it’s clear that he’s treated differently because he’s the youngest. If he was a she, that’d be muddied somewhat…). I don’t see how you could have introduced another female character who is an accepted part of the team, and showed that they share the close friendship that clearly exists between the existing members, without it having created plot difficulties or convoluted explanations to make the same things work, or without having to fundamentally change some of the scenes you showed. So much of this story has centred around concepts of coming of age, learning who you are, accepting that, accepting others… Silly things like the Interlude set us up for Paul’s furious challenging of Tsunami’s attitudes. What you’ve done works so well!

The female characters you do give us are nuanced, intelligent women who clearly gained the power that they have on their own merits and are very capable of keeping it. Amanda, PP and Maven all fit that mould (I don’t think Deacon liked her – but I think he’d have been the first to say she was a very good doctor).

I really can’t see Commander being kidnapped, rendered helpless. and then rescued, by a male teammate leading to smoochy-times. If it happens, and isn’t a disturbing nightmare Kyle has one night, I will probably complain 😉

        • Klaus

And don’t forget the colonel. Powerful, confident, competent.

        • LOL. Yes, I don’t see that situation for Commander either. Or at the very least, God help the fool who tried to kidnap her… 😀

Thank you very much for the kind words and the thoughtful reaction to my characters. You’ve got me smiling here. 🙂

  • Keneu

I love this page – it’s very clear that everyone in the team holds Amanda in great respect.

It must be very hard knowing that your chances depend on your youngest friends risking their lives

Edit – I clicked the reply button on accident -_- I’m still writing my comment

  • Klaus

Is that a tear in the last panel?

  • Commander is so cool ♥

  • Starfighter has updated! ….and someone is jealous….. ^_^ >.< http://starfightercomic.com/chapter_04_page.php?page=Chapter_04_Page_22.jpg

    • RustyBurrell

I gave up on Starfighter, unfortunately. Not even on my bookmark bar anymore.

  • Would you all mind keeping my BiL in your thoughts? My sister just posted this: For
those that don’t know D went to urgent care earlier today and they
told him he either had a stroke or an atypical migraine. If it happens
again he’s going to the ER to be treated for strokes
He is only 25-6ish and a Marine Vet and a surprisingly decent person (most of the time ^_^).

    • stickfigurefairytales

I will definitely include him in my prayers!

    • purplefoxglove

Hey Doki, is he doing better? Best wishes!

      • They are treating him for migraines, but it seems like a “time will tell” situation. 🙁 Apparently this isn’t the first time he has had “stroke-like” symptoms either, but they were told “but it’s been about 6
months so the doc said that’s too far apart to link them together” …..hmmmph I think they need to see another doctor….

        • Kate G

They should definitely see a different doctor or ER, especially if the doctors didn’t do a head CT or MRI on him for the symptoms. If they suspected a stroke, they should have gotten him a head CT/MRI stat to rule it out followed by TPI if they saw a clot. Some clots are very tiny, so if they still suspected it even after scans, they still would have given TPI.

(^My granny, as you know, recently died of complications from a very rare stroke called a base arterial stroke. It’s known for killing 70% of people right away.)

          • Hmmm…..she also said that chronic migraines are common in his family, so I think they are just assuming one thing without looking further into it? Aka they probably won’t do anything until he does have some type of stroke…. which is one reason why I have little trust/faith in doctors.

          • Kate G

My family suffers from chronic migraine (mom, dad, brother and me) as well and one of the tests they start with is a neurological exam to rule out stroke or a hemorrhage each time (unless we say it’s typical migraine symptoms.) If they didn’t perform a neurological exam at the ER, that was very, very wrong. That’s now standard practice for people coming into ERs in the USA.

Having grown up in and out of hospitals, having skepticism is good. Some doctors really don’t deserve their degrees. Some are incredibly helpful and wonderful. Going to the ER, I have had wonderful fantastic doctors that have saved my life or made my life easier; I’ve also had asses or ones that have thought I was a drug addict. The same thing for my specialty and regular doctors. The doctors I have now are wonderful people who really care and work together.

It sounds like you need to call your sister and tell her to take her husband to another ER/hospital. This is sad to say, but if her husband’s insurance allows it, transfer him to a hospital in a wealthier area (or one with the stroke center attached); the doctor’s there have access to better equipment and are better trained.

    • Of course… all good wishes. xo

    • kuku

oh, hey there – I know you from Elan Meets Rafa – wishing the very best to your brother-in-law.

    • JesBelle

Hey Doki, here’s hoping they reach a diagnosis soon. I know they can’t just pop the hood and poke around in there. I hope they can treat whatever’s going on, as well.

  • Anonymouse

I really love this page, for as much as my instincts want to scream “No, don’t let the kids in!” I totally remember being a kid and wanting in on action, being aware of my limitations (I tested them regularly) and the part about not having much of a life left if Anni and Platinum Priestess win is a really good point. There’s obviously a reason she’s The Commander and, uh, the leader, and this is it. She really shows us why this page, and I love it. <3 <3 <3

…also, are Amanda and Tsunami… a thing? Dating?

  • :: offers to give Tsunami a man hug (“happy ending” included) ::

    • Rex… You are a giver. Generous to a fault.

If anything can fix poor Tsunami and help him out of some sort of closet, it’s a Rex Ganymede (Super Hero) hug. You go dude!

      • i figured i’d be the one to offer one up, if no one else was volunteering, dangerfield!

i entirely support the “i’m homophobic because i’m homosexual” curveball, if that means a love triangle between tsun-tsun, Anhi, and The Titillator in the future.

  • Caedis

Feels to me like Tsunami is revealing a bit of himself in that last panel. I wonder if he had any particularly disheartening experiences while growing up… then again, I just want to shake him and say, ‘But you don’t get to decide that for them! ‘Legal guardian’ or not! They are superheroes, goddammit!’

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I am sort of bothered today, this post missed my e-mail yesterday so I had to track it down. No biggie, but I will be far too busy to do any of this during the day tomorrow….Protecting children is one thing, but these are not nor were they ever “normal” children.

  • A2MOM

Really want to know Gordon’s backstory….There’s some real guilt going on there over some major loss, I bet. If he was older I’d think he’d lost a child of his own.

    • EyeDontNo

or a younger brother or friend?

    • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Gordon is a responsible and protective parent. He’s like the Anti- Charles Xavier. He isn’t going to put “his” kids in harms way if it can be avoided.

  • Lindsey Amethyst Hampton

You know, this might be a personal issue, wherein Tsunami tried to help with his powers, and not only found himself underprepared for battle, but also got people hurt. Folks usually get most upset about their failings when it harms another.

  • EldrinSMP

    Go Commander!

  • Sapfo

It have been a long week for me, and it feels like it was forever since I was here. The first thing I see on this page is commander Amandas firm orders. The second thing I see is…. DING DING DING!!! 😀

  • Any other campers yet? *crickets*

    • here kind of sort of

      • A quiet camp for at least right now anyways 😉

        • Well, I might be sick + cramping….so not entirely sure how active I will be in camping. 🙁

          • We all need to dose up on some vitamin C. I actually take B12 when I’m feeling sick or down and D and it works like a charm!

          • ….I like ate 4 oranges the other day….but yesterday my throat was hurting on the right right side, some chest pains on the right side, and today my stomach has been in pain, but not cramping pain and I have had maybe 4-ish hours of sleep in 30ish hours

          • *Climbs in beside Doki and hugs tight* don’t care if I get sick or not! Hopefully it gets better and sleep does sound like the best thing!

          • Sleep would be nice if I could….

    • Saxon_Brenton

      I’m here.

So, what are we going to talk about? Perhaps speculate on how many people can glomp Tsunami at once in order to fix his hugs deprivation?

      • Yes! If enough of us attack with hugs at once, he cannot possibly fend us all off. *good plan* XD

    • I’m around. 🙂

  • davefragments

I”m a bit early today. Got done with the stuff I wanted to do but not the stuff I have to do. Tomorrow will be a half-days work day for me while I reconcile entered on a form. Mind numbing drivel is the other description.

  • DemureDesire

From reading comments it seems that there’s a need for this, so listen up, campers!

Form two lines: people who want to hug Tsunami on my left. No, no, my *other* left! Yes, that’s right! No… left… *sigh* And people who want to kick Tsunami’s tookus on my right. Now, pair off — one person hugs while the other kicks.

But, um, out of consideration for those of who are somewhat vertically challenged, could several huggers team up and wrestle him to the ground first?

    • Ooh I volunteer for the wrestling! *winks*

  • davefragments

Good lord people – where have y’all gone?

    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3-page-44/

    • Writing and reading tweets from people at HamletMachine’s panel going on at San Japan right now. aka distracted 😉

      • davefragments

        boo!
        {wink, wink}

    • That will teach me not to go mouse hunting at high camping. The page was up just after I left the chair – after just having logged on a few minutes before the page was up *lol*

  • Sanbai

Tsssuuunnnaaaammmiiiiiii!!! *flings herself forward, arms wide*
