The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 41

298 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 41

Hmm. I wonder where Fluke is going with this?

Well, I know where I’m going this weekend—I’m going to GaymerX2 in San Francisco! I’ll be on a couple panels and I’ll have a booth there and it’d be great to see some friendly faces. This was one of my absolute favorite Cons last year, so if you’re on the fence, I say you should come! You’ll have a blast!

Oh, and…

***THIS IS A BONUS PAGE!***

Our fifty-second bonus page in a row!

And hold on… Let me count up the weeks in a year… Uh, huh… Carry the two… Consult Google…. Wait! There are actually 52 weeks in a year! THAT MEANS THAT THIS MARKS A FULL YEAR OF BONUS PAGES WITHOUT A SINGLE INTERRUPTION! OMG! PAR-TAY! YOU ALL ARE SO, SO AWESOME!

And thanks to your generous donations, shortly after I posted the previous page, you tipped the donation bar below past its target yet again! That means that in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, July 16th (page 43!), Wednesday, July 23rd (page 45!), Wednesday, July 30th (page 47!), Wednesday, August 6th (page 49!), Wednesday, August 13th (page 51!), there will now be an additional bonus page (page 53!) on Wednesday, August 20th! And we’re already at $235 towards the bonus page after that!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporter Saxon B. (who makes their ninety-fourth generous donation to The Young Protectors!) for their generous donation over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to new friend of The Young Protectors Torsten R. for their super-generous $25 donation!

And finally, ZOMG!, SUPER MONDO HUGS and VERY GRATEFUL BOWS go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $100 donation and also to long-time mega-friend Jeff S. for their jaw-droppingly generous $200 donation! And this makes Jeff’s sixth and Christopher’s eighty-third super-generous donations to this comic! Holy cow, you two! Thank you so, so much for your mind-blowing support!

Thank you all so much for your generous support! The truth is, I would never be able to afford to make this comic without your support and I am very grateful to each and every one of you! You are the most amazing readers in the world and Adam, Vero and I are the luckiest creators to have you with us on this journey. 🙂

So! Seems like Fluke suspects something hidden behind Tsunami’s motivations in wanting to exclude Kyle from the big fight. I wonder what that could be?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! Edit 7/11/14 8:28 PM: Woo hoo! You are on fire! 😀 You’ve yet again tipped over the target of the donation bar! That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, July 16th (page 43!), Wednesday, July 23rd (page 45!), Wednesday, July 30th (page 47!), Wednesday, August 6th (page 49!), Wednesday, August 13th (page 51!), and on Wednesday, August 20th (page 53!), there will now be an additional bonus page (page 55!) on Wednesday, August 27th! I have to say it’s such a great pleasure getting to meet y’all at GaymerX2—we totally do have the best readers in the world! 😀 Thank you so much!

If you particularly enjoy any of these pages and use Facebook, please click the Like button on that page. It’s useful to know what’s working and it helps me get the word out!
  • o_o Getting so close.

    And happy anniversary page 😉

  • Mitch ^-^

    • Jen Roberts

Oh, there’s the Mitch-squeeing. I must’ve just overlooked it before I posted. My bad! 🙂

      • …..your tumblr post is killing me!

        • Jen Roberts

oh no! I did not realize the lethal force of Han Solo’s “oops” face. ^_^; I should know better by now. I blame Kyle and Mitch’s hair for distracting me. I love the coloring job there.

    • b3nc0

You drifted me to PoC! *shakes raging fist*
I thought those manoeuvres were out of your league without new photos, but I forgot the comicses…
      ;°)

  • Wow, got here just in time.

    • b3nc0

      Kuddos on staying awake b^^

  • Sapfo

Darn Adam! No virgin for me today. 😀
    Thank you Paul!

  • Wow, Flukes calling Tsunami out! Way to have your bud’s back, dude!

    • I keep wondering if Amanda is going to defuse the situation or let them rumble.

      • I think she’s just waiting to see if they work it out on their own, but any longer and she’ll probably step on some toes 😉

        • b3nc0

          She’s waiting for Spooky’s «two left»…

        • I think that too. Let them hash it out for a bit.

      • I’m hoping that she defuses, but if she lets them rumble? Well sometimes I wonder if boxing gloves are needed before words can be used.

      • Jena

Well she can read minds can’t she? So she probably already knows what both of them are thinking and knows that its all going to be okay. 🙂

  • silibub

Oh, shit. We’re getting into it now. This next page should be hells of informative!

    • b3nc0

      “Hells”? =°D

      • silibub

        Happy accident!

  • This is one its way to thiiiin ice.
Fluke is going there O_O I need to bring out the popcorn for next page.
    So intens it kills me.

    *Hears the jaws theme*

  • Oh and someone give Kyle a Gibbs’ Smack to jar his brain into place, because Stop that Kyle right now! Then someone give him a big hug. I mean HUGE HUG

    • purplefoxglove

      A Spooky Hug™?

    • Saxon_Brenton

      He’s self-flagellating again.
I mean, I’d really *love* for it to be Red Hot stepping up and being all level headed and taking responsibility – but unfortunately in-story it’s only been a few hours since Spooky had to give him a stern talking to back at the warehouse, and I’ve got the nasty suspicion that Red still hasn’t properly sorted out his feelings yet. In other words, it’s more a case of Red Hot being all unlevel headed and taking responsibility. And that probably makes him being vulnerable to taunts about what he’s done and general emotional blackmail, whether it comes from Tsunami or Annihilator (or the Priestess, for that matter).

      • Yeah, yeah he is. He already thinks he screwed up and to have Tsunami going off on him basically victim blaming. Bah! Which is why I ordered a Gibbs’ Smack STAT!

  • Kuca

Finally getting to the point of the matter then, I see. Hope it doesn’t turn too ugly..

  • davefragments

That’s going to make the battle interesting.

  • Jen Roberts

I don’t think Tsunami’s going where Fluke thinks he’s going. But it’ll be good for Kyle to see his buddy stick up for him. (‘course maybe Tsunami’s not going where *I* think he’s going… but I suppose we’ll find out!)
    And I await Dokidokibaka’s Mitch-squeeing :3

  • Klaus

They just keep interupting Spooky’s work. Hey guys, maybe saving the world is as important as Gordon and KLyle’s feeling, hmmm?

  • Is it possible that Tsunami has absolutely no clue just how he sounds?

    • SofiaT

      Yep.

    • mogoskier

Most likely. Sometimes you don’t know how bad you sound until someone tells you.

    • There are the ones who don’t know/get that what they say is offensive/possible homophobic until it’s pointed out. It can happen to ‘everybody’, but some sure do it more frequent than others.
Also people who think they’re fine with homosexual people in generel until it suddently gets close.

I hope that if it’s either of these two that it’s the first option. That he doesn’t get how it sounds.

      • Sapfo

Here is the test I was talking about.
Are you a biast or not test.

        https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html

        • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Needs flash. Which test did you mean?

          • Sapfo

If read the whole page you will find a link at the bottom. There you will find a lot of diff test. The one I was talking about it the sexuality one.

          • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

I saw the tests listed, but couldn’t take any, because no flash.

          • Sapfo

Then you might have to update your computer for it to work

          • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Maybe if I just asked it to make an exception this one time…?

          • Sapfo

the flash is the test, so it´s up to you what you want to do.

        • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

That was a very interesting test. The results were not quite what I thought they would be. Thank you for the link. 🙂

    • SSF

I don’t think he does, which means he REALLY needs to be called out! I find people who don’t realize they’re being offensive or showing prejudice easier to deal with than people who do it knowing full well where their words are coming from. If they’re a decent person (even if they are defensive at first), they’ll end being grateful for being educated, after all is said and done.

  • TwilightDreamer

Uh oh….Paul’s going there….XD I mean I guess it needs to be brought up, but yeah…dang, this is going to get very good, or very icy….XD
Poor Fly Boy seems unsure about all this…awww.

  • b3nc0

Mitch looks more interrested by what happens 30 feet behind him than 3000 above…

    • Klaus

I wonder if that change of course will help the search, or if it is just to get Mitch to keep “his eyes on the road” as he put it.

  • Sapfo

    Let´s see now about Tsunami.
Is Tsunami homophobic or is he just not getting it?

I am not going to talk about the phobia part. I think most people get what that would mean. (and Phobia? Why is it called fear when it is hate we are talking about?)

As for Tsunami not getting it. In this part let’s pretend that Tsunami don´t have any phobi (which is not one hundred percent confirmed yet), but it’s about that he does not understand.

Tsunami, I am guessing is a hetrosexuell man. A person who never had to worry about what others will think about his sexuality. Not even considered the idea that he needs to tell you why he likes the female sex or hide that he likes it.
It could be that he does not understand what it means to be young, insecure, gay man who just wants to ask acceperad for who he is.

I am kind of hoping that a ignorent Tsunami is better then a hater. But then he needs to learn some empathy

As for Paul! Thank you for daring to question Tsunami. I bet not a lot of people would dare to ask a friend what they really mean when it comes to the hate word. It makes this feel like Kyle is not alone here. He have someone on this side.

And I like Spookys: “Focus on what is important guys!” 🙂

Thank you Alex, Veronica, Adam! Page looks great.
(are you going to have any time of, or are our Ding, Ding making you work around the clock?)

    • b3nc0

It’s a shame we don’t hear Tsunami’s voice, coz his eyebrows half-frowned/half-questioning could mean either a genuine “Something else? Like what? What didn’t I get?” or a menacing “Something else? Like what? What are you implying?”

      • Samurai Jack

I agree, although I think Tsunami is about to come out to the team. 😉 Honestly, I think the gay thing probably never occurred to him.

    • Klaus

It is called phobia because what else could could cause such hate?

      • Sapfo

        Odium?

        • Klaus

Isn’t that just another word for hate? But WHY do they hate?

          • Sapfo

            I have no idea.
And yes it is greek for hate. But so is Phobia

          • IamM

So even in Greek phobia can mean either fear or hate?

You know in chemistry it’s used to mean something like repelled by. For example hydrophobic versus hydrophilic.

          • SofiaT

No. “Phobia” can be used to show repulsion, or aversion, but only in complex words; like photophobia for example which is a physical intolerance to light, a medical condition, not fear of light. The same applies to -phylic or -phile as the second component of a complex word: there, it can mean affinity, inclination. The word “philos” on its own though can only mean “friend” or “lover”.

So phobia, on its own, can only mean irrational, unexplained fear. It never means hate.

          • SofiaT

            Odium is Latin 🙂

And phobia is irrational fear, not hate. It’s derived by Phobos, the God of Fear.

          • Klaus

I think it is actually the other way around. The god is named for the concept. Just like e.g. Dike, Eirene and Nike.

          • Fear.

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

        Revulsion.

    • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Is he in a relationship with Land O’Lakes over there? I mean, if he’s legally the Daddy, this suggests certain privileges…

      • I’d like you to stop using the racist nicknames in your comments here, Acintyabedhabedhadasa. You’ve been using that kind of provocative language more than once since we’ve returned to Chapter 3, along with some sexist humor, and it’s beginning to smell like trolling to me.

I’ve seen you make some good points in our Comments Section. And I’m not saying you are trolling; I can think of other explanations. But we talk about some very provocative stuff here and that works because I can trust the commenters here to use good judgment before they post. I believe you have the good judgment to know what I’m talking about. If I’m right and you do, then you’ll stop and we’re good.

        • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

No, no–I’m totally trolling. But thank you for using “I” language.

In my defense, may I point out that she does look more or less exactly like the Land O’Lakes girl.

          • Thank you for copping to it, Acintyabedhabedhadasa. 🙂

Trolling isn’t allowed here. There are plenty of places on the Internet where you can exercise that muscle but this isn’t one of them. Racist nicknames or your comment below that it’s OK for men to have sex on the third date but not women or anything else of that nature, etc. will be deleted by my moderators and if they continue or if I’m having to devote any real effort in trying to decide if your comments are crossing the line, your account will be blacklisted for this site. I’d rather focus my energies on making comics for y’all.

I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that, though. As I said, I’ve seen you make good points. And I’d love to see you continuing to contribute to our awesome community here. 🙂

    • No rest anytime soon, Sapfo, but thank you for asking—maybe at the end of Chapter 3… Maybe… 🙂 Thank you for the kind words!

      • IamM

Very nice page. Keep up the good work. In the interest of quality control: Mitch’s flight control pillars are missing in panel four. No wonder the poor thing looks so worried.

        • Glad you like the page, IamM! 🙂 It was my impression that Flyboy’s hands were above the pillars, but I checked in with Adam and this is what he said:

“At this angle, you can’t quite see the pillars. Flyboy’s left hand is touching the pillar that would be closest to us. His other hand is a few inches off the pillar.”

So I think we’re all good there. But thank you for looking out for that! 🙂

  • Toli Bera

“Like a certain someone wanting to go back to the Dairy queen.”

  • b3nc0

Is Tsunami gonna play the closeted hater?

    • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Spooky’s next aeronautical command will contain the words “down” and “low.”

  • Justinius Phoenix

I feel like the next page Amanda is gunna jump in and be like

“We all have our secrets guys, and all have pasts some worse then others. So cut the crap and focus on the task at hand! Spooky how much longer before we find them…..”

    Or something like that…….

    • Justinius Phoenix

although Fluke would probally say to Tsunami after…

“This ain’t over yet man. After we’re done here you and I are gunna some serious words!”

    • Mary Klemzak

Yeah I’m surprised she hasn’t jumped in at this point. Maybe she wants them to work it out for themselves, unless it escalates? Where is she anyway? Don’t think they’d leave her behind, would they?

      • timemonkey

Better to get the drama out of the way NOW than allow it to keep building, especially considering the situation they’re headed towards.

      • AseretZone

She’s sitting off to the side, go a few pages back and you’ll see her. She most likely wants them to sort it out themselves, and is staying out of it aside from the occasional “yea” and “no” in response to questions like what Spooky is doing.

        • Mary Klemzak

I thought so. Wise lady. Most mom/lady types would get right in the middle and break her boys up. Unless it came to blood, I think adults should butt out and let the younguns work out whatever issues they have.

  • b3nc0

Aaaand off I go to a short morning nap… Thanks all for a great camping ♥ and VeroAlexAdam for the thrilling page

  • …..Doki is oficially done in for the night…Mitch on page, Mitch face for page announcement on tumblr and face book, the other tumblr thing, and now the Renji art someone posted on facebook

    • purplefoxglove

Good night, Doki! Sweet dreams 😉

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

    “Yeah, OK” ?!
Was “Roger that” too full of sexual innuendo?

    • AseretZone

Nah, it’s not in his character to say “Roger that”, that’s all.

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Next episode: a frank super-family discussion about gay sex.

    • Sapfo

Do not forget the lube ^_^

(Oki this commenter need some sleep before she embarrass herself ;P)

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

My theory is that Tsunami is religious, and thinks gay sex is an abomination, just like tattoos.

        • João Filipe Amorim

For a moment I was going ballistic but then I read “just like tattoos” and spent five minutes laughing. Deadpan snarker, much?

    • Steven K.

Including everything that the Big T. ever wanted to know about “thingy smushing” together with a supervillain of the same gender.

    • Jac

With Flyboy going “Guys, you can say it. It was porn. I’ve known this whole time.”

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

But he doesn’t know it was porn. He probably thinks they’re all gay.

        • Jac

          That’s…. even better XD

  • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Spooky thinks in feet, not meters…

    • timemonkey

Is there any reason they couldn’t be in the sky? Maybe in an actual jet? Or on a mountain?

    • AseretZone

Bird’s-eye view lets you see farther, spreads out where all the mages are instead of them being clumped together.

  • purplefoxglove

I have to admit I had troubles reading further than the first two panels. Paul’s face on panel one is amazing, it’s almost as if I could reach out and touch him and feel the softness of his lips.
And that sounded a lot creepier than it should.
Then, the second panel. That hand! Yes, I have a thing for male hands. Paul’s hand on that panel is the embodiment of sexy. Brain is fried. Please give me a few hours until I can focus on anything else, like the content of the page.

Don’t worry, Spooky, you’re still my favourite.

    • Kate G

Um, I also have a thing for hands. *holds up hand in confessional* I have a very bad thing for hands. You can tell a lot about a guy from his hands. There is nothing I turns me off more than dirty hands with raggedy cuticles and fingernails. *shudders* He can be the hottest man in the entire place but have those hands and I am out of there. For the love of God, have good hand maintenance!

      • purplefoxglove

Good hand maintenance is an absolute must-have. But if a guy’s hands have a certain shape on top of that, I become a drooling mess. Remember that scene in The Lord of the Rings where Frodo asks Aragorn what he’d do with the ring, and Aragorn sinks down on his knees in front of him (whew, is it getting hot in here?) and ever-so-gently closes Frodo’s hand around the ring? I keep replaying that scene again and again and again whenever I re-watch to movie. LOVE Aragorn’s hands! Well, and other things…*blush*

      • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

Oddly, super maintained hands are a bit of a turn off for me. A little hand care is alright, but when it gets to the point a guy (or girl!) is getting regular manicures, I start thinking they might be very high maintenance.

I don’t like super dirty hands, but raggedy cuticles and/or fingernails tell me the person probably works with their hands, whether it’s for a job, or for a hobby. Some of the gentlest hands I know are some of the least maintained (e.g. most equestrians, who’d rather maintain their horse’s hooves than worry about their hands).

        • Kate G

Well, yea, if he’s spending more time on his nails than I AM, there’s a problem. (Hey, I paint my nails nearly weekly. I’m not high maintenance, I just like color!)

I love horses as much as any persons but seeing torn up cuticles just give me the heebies! I work quite a lot with my hands (I crochet, craft, sculpt, scour countertops/dishes almost daily and work with my dog so my hands are always in play) and yet I still take a few minutes to make sure my fingernails and cuticles are presentable, even if they are bare. I’m too insane about it! Of course, I have been known to really ruin a cuticle once in a while

          • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

You’d hate my hands right now, I’ve got four really messed up cuticles. I never really was much of a fan of fussing about my nails, as long as they’re short enough for me to type comfortably, I’m happy. Occasionally, I’ll grab an emery board and buff the top surface, but only if my nails are looking particularly gnarly.

I used to paint my nails once or twice a week, but finding a nail polish I can get along with in the US has proven very difficult. I’m not asking much, just a quick-curing black polish that doesn’t need an insanely long soak in acetone to take off. I can put up with chipping/peeling, as long as I have a polish that dries quick enough I can do constant touch-ups as needed. I just won’t do long acetone soaks, that stuff destroys my nails.

          • Kate G

Two of my cuticles took a hit. In fact, I had a bad injury to one finger and the cuticle developed an infection. There is nothing worse than having to squeeze out pus (SO GROSS, but you have to do it for the fingernail and cuticle to get healthy again.) I’ve only had that happen once before. Blergh.

Have you ever tried Illamasqua Boosh? Illamasqua is one of my favorite formulations as they can go on in one to two coats and last up to a week without chipping. I don’t use acetone (it gives me a horrible migraine) and I can wipe off the polish without getting Hulk hands (with Rampage, which is my utter favorite from them) or too much of a Smurf hands (with Phallic, a dark blue with shimmer.) Boosh is a glossy black; Scorn is a vinyl-finish black (so it dries super fast, but imperfections show insanely well); Creator is a glitter black so it might chip more easily.

In the US, they are at Bloomingdale’s, but you can order them online too (which is how I’ve gotten mine.) They are slightly pricy, but they are AMAZING. ButterLONDON makes a few good blacks too and they are available at Ulta (which is easier access for most people.)

            http://www1.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/illamasqua-nail-varnish?ID=890650&CategoryID=1001528#fn%3Dspp%3D30

          • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

Oh yeah, cuticle and nail bed infections suck so bad. I just cleared one up a couple days ago. Luckily, it doesn’t gross me out squeezing pus out of wounds, hooray for first aid training helping to override the ew factor. Next time you get an infection, might I suggest picking up some witch hazel? You can find it in the medical supplies section in places like Walmart, it’ll be a bottle, and pretty cheap. It’s a plant-based astringent, and stings a little less than alcohol or peroxide, but works a charm. My family’s been using it for years, it’s a bit of a cure-all.

Thank you for the recommendations. I’ll have to pick up some of that ButterLONDON stuff next time I’m out. I don’t know if I can justify Bloomingdale’s prices for nail polish right now, I just don’t have the budget for it. I wish I did, because the names of the colors for Illamasqua are awesome. I’m a sucker for an edgy product name.

          • Kate G

Witch hazel is basically the same as salicylic acid (actually, witch hazel IS salicylic acid, only naturally derived salicylic acid that’s slightly lower in sting factor.)

ButterLONDON is around the same price ($16), but it’s the formula you pay for. They are amazing formulas. I have, like….15 butters. (Sad reality here. I have easier access to Ulta so I consequently have more butters….and 5 Illamasquas.)

          • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

Ah, I actually did not know what witch hazel is chemically, just that it’s magic. 😉 Now I know. Thank you once again.

Looks like I’ll be saving every penny for a few months for my first bottle of nail polish. Ramen noodles three times a week budgets aren’t fun. >.<

          • Kate G

The joy of living with parents….MONEY. Ha ha ha ha ha. <- Is not allowed to live on one's own. Autism comes with perks and downsides.

          • SKB

I do live with one of my husband’s parents, but since neither hubby nor I have been able to get a job in more than two years, money is tight. Since she’s the one earning money, she gets to be the one to decide how it’s spent. If only she didn’t suck with money. >.<

          • Kate G

            Ooooooh, that bites.

  • kamishiro

I don’t think Tsunami made all those argument because he is homophobic or etc. Come on, all his points were about their safety AND the world’s safety. At the moment Kyle sexuality is the least of what he has in mind. If Kyle were straight and it got cheated by that female villain, Tsunami would still not let them get into action. For me it seem the one who looks a little sensitive to Kyle’s sexuality is Fluke.

    • Artemis

He was sensitive before too, when they were picking Kyle up from the warehouse.

      • Cydney Sabin

It seemed to me more like he was walking on eggshells rather than being sensitive. That might just be me, though.

        • Artemis

Well walking on eggshells means you’re unsure of how to react to a situation, and he was very sensitive about how Spooky’s comments might make Kyle react.

          • b3nc0

Funny, I thought it was the other way around, that Spooky was sensitive about how Paul’s comments might make Kyle react…

          • Artemis

I just want to clarify that this is all why I’m thinking and not what it may actually be. Like good friends, they both seemed concerned in their own way, it’s just that Spooky’s concern was in seeing if he could cheer Kyle up, while Fluke didn’t know how to show his concern so he walked on eggshells and was really sensitive over what Spooky could be saying.

  • bronakopdin

I really wonder, what Paul is about to say… I hope it won’t be about discrimination or sth… because I seriously doubt that!

but seems I’m not the only one who thought this might be about it reading the other comments ^^’

I’m still impressed by Spooky handling everything so cool from the sidelines xD

    looking forward to Saturday!!!
It will be a special page for me 🙂

  • fujoshifanatic

*stuffs popcorn into face* Aaand now shit’s about to get real! Speaking of real, I have to comment on the lovely art on this page–there is so much detail to enjoy! The succulent shape of Paul’s lips in panel one…Paul’s EVERYTHANG in panel two…Spooky’s pinch-able cheeks in panel three…Mitch’s uncertain expression in panel five (complete with an ever-so slightly cocked brow)…Tsunami’s navel and Paul’s lats in panel six (YAAAAS!!)…um, where was I going with this…oh, right! Excellent work, TYP team! I enjoyed this page very much!

Don’t know how enjoyable the conversation will be from here on out for our heroes, but it looks like it needs to be had. This team is facing the fight of their lives, and you can’t have the cohesion necessary for that unless everyone knows where they stand with each other. Hopefully Tsunami will not put his foot in his mouth and cause unnecessary and unneeded conflict with his responses. *crosses buttery fingers*

Oh, and congrats on the one year anniversary of double updates Adam! It’s so well-deserved. This is one of the best web comics out there, and I’m so glad that the support you receive, both financially and otherwise, continues to bear that out. May you enjoy continued support and success from your fans, and may that support be the Scooby snacks you need to sustain the incredible amount of work you and the TYP team put into this story for our enjoyment. 😀

    • Thank you, fujoshifanatic! I’m really glad you liked the update, and thank you very much for all the kind words about the comic (and kind wishes!)

    • b3nc0

*sigh* succulent page indeed will you wipe those fingers please don’t want that butter near our page
May I point out that panel 6 isn’t all about skin and muscles (a lot about them but not all). Remember the ‘jet’ is rising and this panel shows it aplenty: Flyboy’s stance with his left leg slightly bend and behind, Fluke’s arm’s extended and pulling the handle while being deported toward the back of the cabin… It’s a-ma…
      wait for it…
      zing!

Only complain from me is Flyboy’s face in panel 5 looks slightly shrunk in his head?

  • davefragments

What with that look from Mitch in Panel 5?
Does he think that Spooky is doing something funky?
Does he not like to go that high or that direction?
    Why that look?

    • AseretZone

“You want me to change height AND direction again with THAT going on behind me and distracting me?! Are you crazy?!” is my thoughts of his expression.

      • davefragments

I think he realized that Spooky has figured out where the Annihilator and the Platinum Princess are working their voodoo that they do so well (to borrow a phrase)

  • stickfigurefairytales

I love Spooky’s bluntness. He believes in Kyle, and he has more important shit to do. No time for chit-chat.

  • Cman65

    its the “Ginger” thing again???????

    • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

Nobody likes gingers. A sad reality that they must learn to live with. Or maybe he heard about that time with the midgets.

    • Klaus

How can you trust a guy who keeps his redheadedness secret from his teammates?

  • Pikinanou

“Yeah, like what?!” I love this drama 🙂 I would see this story adapted to a tv series, I’d Watch it in a heartbeat. A bit like Heroes but with a better ending 😛

  • Keneu

Isn’t Fluke being a bit hypocritical? He had some of the same doubts about Kyle when he went to pick him up, after all. What do you guys think?

(Also, hello! I’ve been following this since May but it’s the first time I comment.)

    • SofiaT

Hi Keneu, welcome to the comments community! 🙂

Hm, Fluke was a bit insensitive but he still backed up Kyle. “You were an idiot but you’re still my friend” kinda thing. He didn’t withhold his friendship or question Kyle’s motives -just his sanity. It was disbelief and hurt, not doubt that Fluke felt and expressed back then. Tsunami has indicated a suspicion though, he’s trying to keep Kyle at arms length, and I can see why the hackles of such a devoted -albeit immature and hotheaded- friend as Paul would rise.

      • Keneu

        Thanks for the warm welcome.:)

I get your point – I hadn’t thought about it like that. Now that I reread both scenes,Fluke seems more concerned about Kyle as his best friend, while Tsunami is more focused on the mission ahead and the unity of the group. Even so, Tsunami could be more tactful.

        • SofiaT

“Fluke seems more concerned about Kyle as his best friend, while Tsunami is more focused on the mission”.

That’s a very good observation . Tsunami is the deputy leader so he has an obligation to protect the whole team while Fluke is more focused on his best friend. I’d agree with Tsunami actually, if his suspicion wasn’t so insulting to Kyle and if his manners didn’t cause more friction in the team than good. I can see why Tsunami would be willing to put his friendship on the back-burner in an effort to be a good second-in-command, but he’s being the opposite of good second-in-command with his attitude; he may be after unity but he manages strife instead :0/

          • Keneu

Yes, after all, Kyle did do something questionable. If this were the army, i’m sure he’d receive some sort of punishment after all the commotion – but the team is more akin to a family, so that won’t probably happen. I just hope this conversation is a one-time thing, so that later they won’t keep rubbing salt in the wound or won’t trust his good sense anymore.

    • Welcome, Keneu! Glad to have you here! 🙂

      • Keneu

Thank you for your kind words! I really appreciate it!

(omg is the author! Thank Buda this is the internet or I’d be a stuttering tomato by now.)

    • b3nc0

      Hallo Keneu ƪ(ˆ▽ˆ)
Welcome into this pack of crazies!

      • Keneu

Hello and thank you! I’m glad to be one more of the crazies of the Young Protectors team. After all, the Platinum Priestess already has her own. 😉

  • I smell a homophobe.

    • Jac

I think it could really go either way. The comic has definitely set it up so it can be seen that way, though, given Tsunami’s previous reaction to seeing porn of them online. But, his reaction from back then could be construed either as “ew, the gay” or “ew, I don’t like seeing me and my friends like this and I feel violated.” If you’re correct, that may lead to some very interesting character development!

While I like that Fluke stands up for his friends, everyone is clearly on edge and this seems like a REALLY bad time to pick a fight. And I suspect that if Spooks weren’t tied down with work right now, he’d step in and stop this. They’ve already distracted our pilot. (I’m also surprised the Commander hasn’t stepped in yet, but I guess she’s busy too?)

      • Klaus

What else could it be that Kyle has kept hidden for a long time? His parentage? He didn’t know. His date with Duncan? That was arranged about a week in advance, hardly a long time. His first meting with Duncan? We don’t know how long ago that was, but it is very unlikely to have been more than a month.

  • AseretZone

Poor Mitch, this must be stressful to hear about and if he wasn’t so skilled he might’ve ended up dropping them like he did the car when they were on the way to save Kyle. They really should’ve had this talk when they weren’t in a superhero-powered jet that could dive real fast the moment he loses concentration.

Good on Spooky and Amanda for staying out of it, and nice to see Spooky is trying to remind them all what is really important. While I understand Tsunami’s apprehension about Kyle’s relationship with a KNOWN CRIMINAL, male or female, he picked a REALLY bad time and place for this.

To those of you screaming “homophobia!” I really think that he’s just not sure if he can trust Kyle after he went willingly into what would surely be a trap. Whether it was with Annihilator or the Platinum Priestess, he went on a date with a known dangerous criminal and even trusted them enough to sleep with them. And we have NO idea how long it’s been since they started dating. If it has only been a week to a month, then Kyle was an idiot who let his body control him and doesn’t have the head to fight them. NO ONE DEPENDABLE sleeps with someone on just the third date, known criminal or not! *frowns*

And how does Tsunami know this isn’t a set-up, a trap, and they left Kyle behind so that the other kids could be lured to where the spell is? Sure they have their laws, but when Annihilator is Ruler of America, he makes the laws. The kids would be at risk, and Kyle could’ve been told to act like he wanted revenge to get everyone to agree and go to fight, only to be captured or killed or given to Laampros as slaves? (Spooky’s already been there…) Or even if he wasn’t told to act, they knew him well enough to know he would do this very thing.

About the art, I really like how much detail you put into this. The shifting cloth, the poses, the slight raising on the brow, the expressions, the background…they’re all just really good. Good work. 🙂

    • “NO ONE DEPENDABLE sleeps with someone on just the third date, known criminal or not! *frowns*”

      …I don’t think that’s true.

    • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

“NO ONE DEPENDABLE sleeps with someone on just the third date, known criminal or not! *frowns*”

Like David, I disagree with this. Just because someone sleeps with someone on the third date does not mean they’re not dependable. What people do in their relationships, so long as they hurt no-one, is their business. Implying that someone who likes to get intimate instead of going through the courtly process of courtship is somehow less isn’t fair.

I don’t want to start a flame war, I don’t want to troll, I don’t want to ruffle feathers, but in the interest of educating others, that attitude is commonly called “slut shaming”, and regardless of the gender of those being shamed, it isn’t cool.

I’m not saying you’re a cruel person, please know that. I saw an educational opportunity in replying to the post the way I did. I’m not trying to single you out. I’m so sorry if I come across that way.

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

I would say that it’s okay for a man, but not for a woman.

Also, I rarely use “he or she” (let alone the even more politically-correct reversed forms), but wickedly use the masculine pronoun to refer to humanity in general. Mwahahahaha!

    • Klaus

It is quite unmistakable that it was the third time they met. When would they have met in between? If they had met after the first encounter, Duncan would not have needed to set a fire. At heir second meeting they go directly to Hong Kong. At the end of the Hong Kong episode, they arrange their first date, Kyle’s birthday.

    • DC

I think it is hard to understand why Kyle trusted Duncan so quickly. Is that what you are possibly saying? I don’t think it reflects on his dependability, but on Kyle’s ability to trust others. I think it can be an important quality of a person’s character to be able to trust others. Duncan did come across to Kyle, and me, as attractive and charmingly persuasive (I change that now to ugly, evil, persuasive douche canoe), he did seem to fool a lot, not all, of us readers too into trusting him. For myself the aspect of trust is very important before sex. Sometimes for me three dates are enough, sometimes more are needed. I think in Kyle’s mind there would have still been a small niggling feeling of can I fully trust him, but all the other factors understandably over powered that 🙂

  • Alan Michael Williams

Kind of an interesting play here…. the “secret” was both that he’s a gay AND a hellspawn. Sure, his secret gayness was turned against him and led to this hellspawn situation, but I’m curious what the moral to be drawn here is…

    • b3nc0

You mean “his secret gayness led to the discovery of this hellspawn situation”?

      • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

With Jack Chick as guest artist.

        • Jac

          “Mom, Dad… I’m a Hellpawn. You’re actually a demon.”

      • Alan Michael Williams

Well, if it weren’t for the Annihilator, Kyle very could have well gone through life without learning about his hellspawnhood…. since it required that trip to Hell, and all.

        • b3nc0

That’s what I’m saying: he already was the son of Laampros, just didn’t know it…

  • I need friends like Fluke. He’s just “Okay, you’re gay and the son of Satan. No problemo.” And is fighting for him and all. :’)

    • b3nc0

Why would you need one? Are you a Hell spawn too?

      • Jac

OF COURSE NOT NOBODY IS A HELLSPAWN ESPECIALLY NOT ME WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT.

        • Acintyabedhabedhadasa

Oh sure, a lot of people will accept you if you don’t ACT demonically, but that’s just a more subtle form of prejudice.

        • Klaus

          Qui s’excuse …

      • Maybe. <..>

  • Adam Irving

What a great dialogue. Good pacing on the main issue, while still keeping us connected with the large story. Nicely done.

  • Jac

This dialogue is creating some really interesting discussions here – well done!

    • It’s something I’m really enjoying too, actually. Very gratifying. 🙂

  • Paul K. Edwards

just going to say that i am a long time reader, and that i truly do love this comic. As a fan of the x-men and marvel as a whole growing up i had very little gay people to look up to, and the few that i did have were mostly a joke, i truly wish that i had this comic when i was younger. It shows to me that gay comics are not just smut or a joke that it can be just as good as any mainstream comic but have a active gay charaicter that so human. i always look forward to what you can bring to the table so to speak and even a few of my straight friends like the comic as a comic for comic sake. well i m sure i have talked to much just, thank you and i know you will keep up the good work. p.s. the annalitor and kyle are so cute lol

    • Aw, thank you so much, Paul! I’m so glad you’re enjoying The Young Protectors! And welcome to the Comments Section! As a fellow-fan of the X-Men from way back, I hope to see you here often. 🙂

I’m also pleased to hear that you’ve been enjoying reading it with your friends. That always puts a smile on my face. Thank you for letting me know!

    • b3nc0

Aloha ㋡ノ Great to have you in the commenters asylum!

  • b3nc0

I have the sudden feeling that Tsunami doesn’t trust Kyle less for being gay or Hell spawn or dating Anni or not being frank about what he knew of it (ie 1, 3 & 4), but rather, maybe, he doesn’t trust himself on battlefield to not let all this interfere with how he acts (re-acts?) toward this friend he doesn’t know anymore?

  • Torkwase Ahua

    dun~dun~Duuuuuuuun! Confrontation.

  • Lindsey Amethyst Hampton

*chinhands* Fluke, he’s been REALLY obvious about his reasoning, y’know. He’s young, could be used for the spell, has been keeping secrets and generally making bad choices, all Really Good Reasons. But! We must explore the “You’re being prejudiced because he’s gheeeeey angle.” It’s important. (If Fluke comes out with reverse racism, I will be so shocked, you don’t even know.)

    • anonywolf

Kinda like I said on the last page: If he could be used for the spell – then why didn’t Duncan take him with him? Seriously – if he was still needed – why would the Annihilator let Kyle go, wouldn’t it make more sense that instead of giving him a chance to get his team together that Duncan would use some other trick to knock Kyle out or something and take him with him? Counting on him to be with his team to fight against them is a bit of a long shot because Duncan is a really smart guy and he’d likely know that Gordon, or the others, would have these kinds of thoughts and make Kyle stay home- it seems more likely to me that they’d want Spooky for the spell.

Bad choices? Yeah – that goes back to the being young thing and the fact that he’s gay in a prejudiced world. It’s also been fairly established in that side comic that Gordon is very uncomfortable with that sort of thing so being afraid to come out to them is not unreasonable, not being able to come out to them for fear of prejudice can lead to turning to the only person who knows and seems to be okay with it and accepting of who you are as a person… which was Duncan. Kyle being used is not Kyle’s fault. Kyle being made to think it’s his fault is how abuse works.

Also – Reverse Racism isn’t a thing. Racism is a thing. A individual person of colour can be racist to a white person, it’s not institutionalized, it’s not going to have a knock on effect on all white people that negatively affects their standing in the world, reducing opportunities etc…. but it is a thing. People of Colour can be racist and that needs to be recognized for what it is, not delegitimized by being called “reverse racism”.

      • Maus Merryjest

I’m becoming less convinced that Anni needs Kyle there for the spell…

However, he might want to attract Spooky. I can’t imagine Anni is not aware that Spooky poses a potential inconvenience to his plans. While Anni clearly bested Kyle in skills, I’m sure Anni’s sorceress could target Spooky to keep him from ruining the ritual.

Otherwise? It doesn’t really make sense for Anni to let Kyle go. Kyle knows what is going down, had a mystical team-mate, and they can call on the other heroes and the army. If Anni didn’t want them coming after him, he would have taken Kyle with him and kept him captive. By letting Kyle go, he knows they’re going to come after him en force, and that Spooky can pinpoint them down.

It doesn’t seem like Anni to leave a big element of the plan (Ritual not being disrupted) to chance. Something’s up.

Only half-theories here, but maybe Annie and the sorceress have a specific role for the boy who crossed the barrier between worlds for their own gate-opening.

Maybe part of the ritual requires a sacrifice?
Check that- it’s a demonic ritual. It most likely does.

Suddenly I am getting flashbacks to Ghostbusters.

      • Maus Merryjest

As a Person of Color I’m honestly rather tired of the “Person of Color” politically correct term. It splits the universe into white and non-white which does nothing to erase race as an element in the evaluation of a person.

That, and the term makes me feel like I should be posing for a United Colors of Benetton poster or something.

        • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

I don’t like the term Person of Color either, for the same reason you dislike it. It’s inherently exclusionary to anyone non-white, and the words themselves have an implication of white superiority which is just plain wrong.

Thanks for the United Colors of Benetton poster quip, that made my day for some reason.

        • anonywolf

I’m sorry that you are honestly rather tired of the term, I couldn’t think of another way to phrase it without having to list each ethnicity one by one with the fear of leaving one group out and having someone else upset at me for that when I really didn’t have the time to type that all out since I had to go soon after.

While I don’t evaluate a person’s worth on anything like race, gender, sexuality, religion, ability/disability, and so on – I’m also not going to pretend that those differences don’t exist. I’m not colour blind. I’m not going to go around and insult people who are having to deal with institutionalized racism everyday by pretending that it’s not a thing and not because people are prejudiced against them for their race. I’m certainly going to try and reduce it – but it’s really hard to know what way to talk about it to try and reduce it when several people in the demographic have wildly oscillating views.

I get that not everyone agrees with the politically correct term for their own demographics. As an autistic person, and with my mother being disabled as well, we hate person-first language which is often used to describe people with disabilities. Because no one should need reminding that we’re people, that shouldn’t be something that is forgotten – but our disabilities also need to be addressed and accommodated – not swept under a rug because people are trying to think of us as people so hard they forget that the disabilities impact us quite heavily and we need to have that recognized.

I don’t know what preference you have – I don’t know what ethnicity you fall into – but I’ve met A LOT of people who prefer the person of colour term and will basically rip me a new one if I don’t use it. I’m kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place here. How can I address the differences, even while trying to reduce them, without othering an entire group of people?

          • Maus Merryjest

I find it ridiculous how simply having a different shade of skin and ethnic origin can turn you into a rhetorical weapon: it is assumed that because you were born somewhere, that you are the final arbiter in any dispute concerning your particular culture. It isn’t because of some particular moral or intellectual merit– no, it’s because you’re “one of them” (this is never stated, but it’s implicit to the core of the argument) and therefore your opinion can weigh the entire debate towards someone’s favor.

In other words, you have now become a Pokemon trump card. Lovely. And the added amusement is that it doesn’t matter what exactly the person does– be they a physicist, an opera singer or a cultural anthropologist, all it matters is that they suddenly become the Ambassador Of Their Culture, even in matters of which they have very little knowledge. All that matters is that The Person Of Color (PoC) Has Spoken.

Person of Color. That’s another one— I am not Hispanic or Latin American anymore, I am a Person of Color (PoC). As I said before, all this language does is to cleave the universe into two sides: People of Color, and White People (because white is not a color anymore).

This is a level of rhetoric that can never attain equality. It encourages further rationalizations to find new ways in which a specific group can be perceived to be the oppressor, and it never ends- the field has become a Mandelbrot fractal that curls upon itself in ever more minuscule and specific mini-oppressions, but generating an inversely proportional size of sheer outrage for each one.

I don’t care what others prefer. The term is nothing more than a divisve euphemism being used for the sake of divisive rhetoric that only incites anger and continued antagonism instead of inclusive arguments and actual solutions.

Which is evidenced by the fact that people are inclined to rip you a new one if you -don’t- follow sanctioned and approved language patterns (or as I call it, thought policing) for no other reason that the term exists… yet calling someone by their ethnicity or race is -not- an insult, slurs are insults. This is a rather naked evidence of the Double Speak involved in this whole mess, and why terms such as PoC are euphemistic poison whose only raison d’etre is for a set group of people to control how you speak and think.

            And that’s not cool.

          • anonywolf

” it is assumed that because you were born somewhere, that you are the final arbiter in any dispute concerning your particular culture”

This comes from the “no decision about us, without us” system. Which is terminology used in the mental health and disabilities area – Something many people in the area of disabilities, specifically mental and development disabilities fought hard to get. People don’t want to make decisions affecting an ethnicity they’re not apart of without giving the people in that ethnicity a say – representation. No – it doesn’t matter what you do, and yes it is because “you’re one of them” – but they don’t MEAN it to imply that “them” is a bad thing or inherent lesser. They mean it in a “I’m trying to let you control your representation because for centuries you didn’t have any say whatsoever in how you were represented.” – They’re trying to address existing racism, quite possibly being incidentally racist about it but they’re not aware of that.

Had I listed “Black, Asian, Native American, Polynesian and so on…” in my post – and left OUT Hispanic/Latin American – would you have been upset that I was apparently glossing over or deliberately ignoring your ethnicity – or that it’d been forgotten? Even though that may have not been the case? I was trying to be all-inclusive by using the term I was told, by others who were from a range of ethnicity (mostly Black and Asian from what I recall), was all-inclusive while still trying to show that racism isn’t ALL “white to…” or that it wasn’t a case of it could never be “… to white”

You’ve honestly got me feeling like I’m a bad person for using a term others explicitly stated they want used, when you don’t want it used. Where do I go from that? What are the actual “inclusive arguments” and “real solutions” here?

      • Garnasha

Valid points, and they’re also made in the comic. Spooky debunked the “being manipulated and abused is your own fault” feeling back when they brought Kyle clothes (and shame on Tsunami for blaming the victim). And at Paul’s request, he shot down the “Kyle could be needed for the spell” here.

Which leaves us with something heavily implied in the interlude: Tsunami is a dirty homophobe. And like a good homophobophobe, Paul is about to call him out on his shit.Go Paul.

  • Hello, everyone!
I`ve first discovered this wonderful comic some time ago but have only just recently caught up to the current pages. And I must say I`m enjoying it so very very much. The story is interesting, engaging and captivating, the plot twists – smart and overwhelming, the reveals – truly unexpected yet making so much sense in hindsight, the world – diverse and intriguing, the characters are all so alive and real and fascinating – it seems impossible not to care about them; the art is beautiful, all the visuals are so cool, the colors are always pleasant, the character designs are endearing. Even though tragic things happen and the characters face terrifying ordeals the overall effect of this comic is really heartwarming. It makes me happy. I love it. ♥
Also I admire the comment section on this site. The discussions are always delightful. It is a great place you have created here. I don`t believe I’ve ever encountered anything quite like it. It`s amazing.
It is with respect to your Community that I post this comment wishing to share some of my thoughts regarding the latest pages.

And they are: I fear that the heated discussion the characters are currently having regarding who should and shouldn’t participate in the upcoming fight may prove to be academic. It well may be that all of them will have to fight anyway. The Young Protectors seem so terribly outmatched and there seems to be much they don’t know about what’s really going on, and I have a strong feeling that the plan with the military strike won’t work out… oh, the situation is so scary.
But I wonder: Spooky said he is down to 6 potential locations. There are 6 of them on the plane, right? Could it be that he will be unable to specify the location any further and they will have to split up to check out all of the potential spots in time and find the place of the ritual?

Welcome, FivePM! So nice to have you join us, I second your sentiments about the comic and the quality of the discussion it generates! 🙂

I agree, I don’t see this ending without all of them having to fight, and Kyle especially. After all, he is meant to be the greatest champion of humanity the world has ever seen! You don’t do that by sitting on the bench.

As for the location of Anni and Sircea, and them having to split up, that’s an interesting thought. But I have faith in Spooky’s abilities, hopefully he’ll be able to pinpoint them soon…

      • Klaus

“one of the most powerful champions the world has ever known” the kickstarter page says. Where did you get “of humanity” from?

        • SofiaT

I improvised. We are dealing with a demonic army here.

          • Klaus

Wouldn’t it be more interesting if it was of Hell? No, I don’t think Alex would go there. Of redheads then?

      • Thank you for your kind welcome, SofiaT!
I also hope that Spooky will find them soon.

    • Let me also welcome you, FivePM! And thank you so much for all your kind words and for letting me know what you’re enjoying about The Young Protectors and our community here! It put a big smile on my face! 😀

And you’re asking good questions. I hope to see you here a lot.

      • Thank you
so much for your warm welcome, Alex! The
Young Protectors repeatedly puts a big smile on my face! =^___^=

    • b3nc0

      Welcome a-board FivePm ƪ(◠‿◠)

Maybe Commander will have to split them up to avoid further confrontation, or strategic and surprising pairing!

      • Thank you, b3nc0! ^_^
I really hope that they won`t have to split up because
of the infighting, they should be able to get past their disagreements, after all the fate of the world is at stake. But forming smaller groups for strategic reasons sounds like it could be really cool!.. I like your idea.

    • Welcome FivePm!! So happy to have you in our community.

      • Thank you, Admiral
Jane! I am happy to be here.

  • Daniel Notsoinnocent Lane

*Looks around and waves* HI everyone… Just found this comic two days ago and I love it~ Not good with words and stuff, buuuut yeah this is kind of epic. :3

    • Hi Daniel! Welcome, glad to have you here!

    • SofiaT

“Kinda epic” describes it perfectly, not many more words needed!

      Welcome aboard, Daniel! 🙂

    • Welcome, Daniel! Thank you for the kind words! Glad to have you here and glad you’re joining our community! 🙂

    • b3nc0

      HI ◕‿◕ ノ

Welcome in this notsoinnocenteither community follow my eyes, Daniel!

  • purplefoxglove

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe we have a “Ding!” here! Thank you very, very much to everybody who manages to donate and keep us supplied with these wonderful bonus pages – since one full year! ^^

  • Klaus

And we have a ding ding.

Edit: the first thing to go blind is the eyes, it is said.

    • purplefoxglove

A ding can’t be praised enough 🙂 Though I’m afraid A, A & V are waking up in the middle of the night, screaming: “Noooooo! Another ding!!! Why!? Why can’t they just let us rest?” 😉

      • b3nc0

Maybe on Xmas week? Can we agree on stopping donating from October ’til Christmas so there ain’t no bonus page in the end of December or something like that?

        • purplefoxglove

Although all these bonus pages put quite a lot of pressure on the team, I have a feeling the last thing Alex wants is to stop us from donating – if I recall correctly, he said he needed the donations to end up with +/- 0 if he wanted to pay Adam and Vero and keep up the good quality of the comic.

If the team really needed a break, we could agree that we won’t have a bonus page during that week and just get said page one week later. But I’m also sure that, should a break be needed, Alex will come up with an idea that is okay for everyone 🙂

  • Maus Merryjest

I’m honestly hoping Tsu is objecting only to Kyle’s choice in giving Annie a chance and the fact that he might get too zealous in his desire to put Annie down to make good choices in combat (of course he’s the Protagonist, so that chance isn’t as likely– but Tsu isn’t genre-savy!)

If he’s objecting to Kyle keeping his sexuality secret— uh, what anyone’s sexuality is is totally nobody’s business.

The half-demon spawn… well, I don’t know how things work in this universe. If Kyle being half-demon means there’s a side of him Laampros could manipulate and force Kyle to act against his will? Maaaaybe. But if Spooky, who is the demonologist par excellence, doesn’t think it is likely, I think they’d do well to trust the word of the guy who not only went to hell but got the T-Shirt.

So either Tsunami will be put in his place OR— maybe Commander can point out that Tsunami’s judgment is emotionally compromised and take over.

  • Maus Merryjest

If Kyle is half-demon, does that mean he has an unnaturally prolonged lifespan? If so, that might pose further obstacles in searching for a permanent partner, considering he will most likely outlive them.

As long as he doesn’t start looking for men who sparkle under the sun and practice creepy sleep-watching…

    • Klaus

Well, he does know one man who has puchased perfect health and youth unending.

      • Maus Merryjest

Bleh, but why would anyone want to choose someone who’d throw the entire world under the bus? 😉 There’s plenty of supernatural candidates out there!

And then, there’s always my Cheshire cat: http://vorpalmux.deviantart.com/art/Final-Version-of-Vorpal-s-Costume-449938418

He might lack the sheer size that Annie packs, but at least he’s equipped to deal with demons!

        • Klaus

          But is he fireproof?

          • Maus Merryjest

He is not quite sure, but he’s not adverse to using up one of his lives finding out.

  • Klaus

Just as you think those Lazarov & Quest adds can not get more explicit, they do. Might the not scare away readers?

    • b3nc0

Oh, my‼ Are they doing what I think they’re doing?

Manipulating Superman & Spiderman making out? Scary, indeed ;°)

    • Saxon_Brenton

I had also been thinking something along those lines. The page updates early afternoon Sydney time, so for Wednesday camping I’m at work – and I find myself *very carefully* skipping over those parts of the page that have adds to get to the comments section 🙂

      • SofiaT

Yaoi911 is a blocked website at work. I only access it through my phone and only when I’ve turned off the WiFi and loading the page on my data plan. :0/

    • Kuca

Thank you! I’d been thinking that exact same thing. Wish we could deal with them.

    • So, I’ve been experimenting with allowing adult ads “below the fold.” And that’s what they are, an experiment. They have increased my ad revenue by a significant amount, which is important as I’m having less and less time for my day job. But obviously, I care about the impact it has on my readers.

Have all the Lazarov adult ads been troubling to y’all? Or just these more recent Quest ones?

      • Klaus

Even the previous batch made me a bit reluctant to recommend YP to my straight friends. Not so much because they would be disgusted, but because they would most likely think that this was the same kind og comic and therefore uninteresting to them.

      • Frater Gymnos

I like the Lazarov ads and have purchased a number of his books.

  • b3nc0

    DING-DING-DING or something like that…

  • Klaus

A theory: the silver duo need not Kyle but Paul. He has a birthday real soon now, and birthdays have power. His own unique power might also be required.

    • Saxon_Brenton

So… “You have had really bad luck because your best friend’s attempt to find love have backfired spectacularly with betrayal by a supervillain and has doomed the Earth to being a demon lord’s playground. You are due for some really good luck, which we shall harvest to guarantee that our plans succeed”.
Well, we dunno exactly when Fluke’s birthday is. But, okay, depending on the exact mechanics of Fluke’s powers I can see that being feasible. A specially designed spell to overcome any limitations in Fluke’s powers would be a good idea – but then Priestess is a powerful sorceress who has had time to prepare so that wouldn’t be a big deal.

  • b3nc0

The other day, I made the comment that Mitch’s face looked knida shrunk & today thought ‘to be sure I’d still have to see a better version’, so I touched his face up in Paint with the mousepad of my laptop and here’s the crappy result, I know the face is too low now m(__)m

  • I am showing a DING DING DING?

  • Saxon_Brenton

It’s Saturday morning here, and I’m just hanging around the kitchen reading the weekend papers over a cup of tea or five. As a contribution to early camping, I’ll throw out this observation:
Last night I was skimming some YP as bedtime reading, and I got to the scene at the warehouse where Fluke rants about how angry he is about how Annihilator treated Red Hot that he wanted to rip Annihilator’s head off. (Thinking back I recall a comment I made at the time: about how angry not just Fluke was, but also Fluke’s word balloons were too, jumping forward and covering over a central part of artwork rather than discretely hanging around on the sides and background as is normally the case…)
Anyhow, this got me thinking about Fluke’s rather pointed question to Tsunami in panel 6. I’m thinking that this page has moved from where Fluke is upset about not being in on a fight scene to Fluke being upset for Kyle, and that the earlier page with the ‘rip his head off’ line was a bit of characterisation foreshadowing for this scene. (Although not in any literal sense.) This also fits with all those worried looks from Flyboy. And from a storytelling point of view this fits: with Red Hot trying to be all grimly stoic and heroically responsible it falls on the others to (over)react and be a swirling vortex of passions circling around Red’s attempt to be still and calm.
Yet at the same time the actions of those characters underscores that this is an argument between young adults – people who either are children or who are only recently out of childhood. The two characters who we think of as the ostensible adults – Commander and Spooky – haven’t bothered to slap down this squabbling. Spooky throws out the occasional line to hint that maybe there are more important things they should be worrying about. Tellingly, Commander has only responded to direct questions, letting the others work it out for themselves while she works on her tablet. But you just know she’s paying attention and will step in firmly if required (“No one is summoning anything to eat any of our equipment, and that’s final”), something she almost certainly picked up from her mother.
Moreover, I think the characters of Fluke and Tsunami are mirroring each other. Okay, I’ll admit that I’m *assuming* that Tsumani’s problem is not homophobia but a genuine concern about operational secuirty and the safety of the other team members; I may be wrong about that. But if I’m correct, then look at their behaviours: both in this scene and in the warehouse scene we have two youngsters concerned about other people, and who have both proved themselves to be somewhat clueless in assessing how other people feel about the situation, resulting in some foot-in-mouth. The problem is that because they are focusing on two separate levels of concern – team security and safety versus Red’s honour – they are talking *at* each other rather than *with* each other, and have now gotten to the point where it’s looking as though we may soon get childish name calling.

Which is a shame. For my money the notion that they’re all trying to be responsible and do what’s best, but have completely different takes on what’s right, is a fine piece of literary compare-and-contrast. But it does mean that their group unity will be weakened, such that when they inevitably do come into conflict with Team Silver (and minions) the Young Protectors will not be as effective as they could be.
(Last minute thought: Oh crap. That means things will go all Saturday morning cartoon moralising on us, and the heroes won’t be effective until they learn ‘the power of friendship’ or something. I read too much TV Tropes…)

    • SofiaT

Have you heard of the Sacred Band of Thebes?
It was an elite troop, consisting entirely of male lovers; 150 pairs of them.
The idea was that, if you fought hard in battle to protect your comrades, how much harder would you fight to protect the one you loved? The result was that the Sacred Band of Thebes was considered more deadly than the Spartans even.

Fluke’s anger and passion (possessiveness?) back on the warehouse made me wonder if it’s not just friendship he’s feeling for Kyle, that makes him so irritable.

      • Saxon_Brenton

I hadn’t heard of the Sacred Band of Thebes.

Fluke’s reactions at the warehouse could support that reading. And to be fair Flyboy’s reactions during that scene could support a young, schoolboy crush version of the same.

However, I will submit a contrarian reading of Fluke’s passion. Considering the give-and-take-of-luck nature of his powers, his anger at Annihilator may also be displacement of guilt and anger at himself because deep down he’s worried that he somehow caused (or at least exacerbated) Red Hot’s problems.

    • Kiri

I agree with your reading of it – the only comment I want to make is that this TYP not Ponies:Friendship is magic – it’s unlikely that Alex is going to take us down that path.

My take on what’s going to happen is that Commander knows what is going on, and is waiting for it come out so she can dowse them down before the big fight. It’s stuff that has to be done because you can’t go into a fight hiding things or making wrong assumptions (of which I believe that both Fluke and Tsunami and Kyle are doing).

I wouldn’t be surprised Sofia if you’re right about Kyle and Fluke – the other side of it though is that I do think that he’s over-compensating for his own feelings of guilt at not picking up what was going on, and maybe his own feelings of uncomfortableness at what damage he may have done when they were looking at the porn. (though I’m not committed to the 2nd part of that)

  • Mago de Won

¡Hi guys! I wish you all a wonderful day.
It is my first time posting here so excuse me if i write something out of context. Also English is my second language so please expect a few grammar mistakes and strange phrases. Thanks for your patience.
I have known The Young Protectors comic since two months ago and i have loved it since the beginning. It is very energetic, filled with emotions and colorful which makes my gay passions vibrate strongly. It is subtle too, giving it a captivating tinge. I definitely adore the sensitivity with which the author portraits the world of a gay young man, how tensing and hot skin it feels to express your different sexuality in a slowly opening society surrounded by men with partially hidden desires thus flirting becomes a chance game of successes and mistakes in order to discover wether the other man is compatible with you or not. That is a burning gamble full of fears, hopes, desires, shyness and ackward moments meant to reduce you to a pile o emotional embers, a great and delightful experience to treasure and remember.
Thank you for your comic Alex Woolfson: it is great and i wish you endless talent, tons of success and little luck, cause a don’t think you need much. You have great inspiration and the best supporters. A little kiss on the cheek: chu.

    • SofiaT

      Welcome, Mago! 🙂

          Yes, welcome.

          • Mago de Won

¡Thank you a lot new friend!

    • Welcome to the community, Mago!

      • Mago de Won

        ¡Thank you too a lot!

    • Mago de Won

You are very sweet. I am impresed to see people around here are very nice.

      • SofiaT

Alex is nice, so it’s all flowing from there…
It makes sense he’d have nice fans too! 😀

    • Thank you very much, Mago! And welcome! It was a lot of fun to read your reaction to our work and I hope we’ll get to see you here a lot! 🙂

  • Simba

    Camping tiiiiiimmmee o/~

  • In for camping as usual 🙂 How are you all?

Nice to see the great comments from new commenters, no matter if they have just found the comic or have been quietly reading until now.

    • Kuca

Doing well, I suppose. Day started off with a nice long walk with the dog at a park, really set the tone for everything. Think we overworked the poor thing, though, his paws were all red and sore when we got home.

Unfortunately, unless the comic comes soon, don’t think I’ll make it. Getting to bed early, which is good; sleep’s been off and I’ve finally gotten things on track, I hope.

      • Aww, hope the dog’s paws are fine soon. The ground could have been too hard and/or hot. Hot ground can burn a dogs paws pretty bad.

        • Kuca

Nah, wasn’t too hot. It was actually cool today despite the time of year.

More the fact that we went two miles and well, he’s a bit sensitive in general to nearly everything which can be frustrating since he’s one of those high energy dogs that needs a lot of exercise and such on any given day.
Park was pretty amazing, in the middle of no where, don’t really think to stop and check those things when you’re actually out there.

He just loves it all but, never knows when to stop and it can be hard not to give in sometimes.

    • davefragments

This afternoon, I finished editing a short story about robots and stuff. Reads like Pahlaniuk (or so the internet thingie tells me) . . . then sent it off to a journal.

2 months from now, I’ll probably get a rejection. I keep my expectations low.

      • Good luck!

        • davefragments

thanks, Some of these submissions are like “bring me a rock” and you have to guess what rock the editor wants. Sometimes, there so many other good stories that mine doesn’t fit in the mix. Can’t do anything but wait.

          • Kiri

Save them up – eventually it will fit somewhere. I always take heart that some of my favourite authors had 10’s and 100’s of rejections before they got their best-seller published. You’ll be in good company.

          • davefragments

            I understand.

      • Adam Black

you should write a story about waiting for the rejection and the rejection, in the same style.

then submit it before they send out a response

        • davefragments

It’s tough for me to write about me. I’m not interesting but my fantasies interest me. To write about writing as a story about an author would be a grand challenge. I
ll settle for a Cthulhu visitation or robot men from Mars or strange simians.

    • Kiri

This is my first time camping. I’m down under so I’m never quite sure at what time it gets updated. Am I hours early?
I’m in mild dental pain because of root canal – but it’s been successful so far, so I’m happy about that.
I’m getting smooches from my white, deaf cat called Blanche – so that makes me happy too, although she likes to sit on the mouse and type with her tail.

      • Welcome to the fun of camping then 🙂

You’re not early. Basically today’s page is between now and the next 2-3 hours. I think the page could be up a little late today since Alex is at a con, but it could also be just around the corner depending on when he get back to his room.

        • Kiri

          Coolness – it’s 1:30pm now so between now and 5pm. 🙂 I’ll do other things while I’m waiting 🙂

          • Yes, normally I would say more like between noon and 3:30-4 pm for you, but since he’s at a con then who knows. Pages tend to be up in the later end of the usual ‘camping time span’ on these days.

          • Kiri

I’m doing some Sim stuff this afternoon, so it doesn’t really matter today. 🙂

      • Pressed Post too fast *lol*
Ouch about the dental problems. I’ve been through that one and it sucks, so happy it’s going well despite the pains. Cat smooches are good in times like this.

      • Kuca

Urghh, not the dentist. Hope you feel better; like Danish said, animals are amazing for helping such things.

        • Kiri

I have 2 cats – Leanne and Blanche and they are the most amazing helpers for almost everything. (I’m not overly impressed with Blanche’s typing skills).

          • Kuca

Hah, I would imagine not. Animals don’t tend to be great typists. Or anything along those lines.

Pity that, too. Means they can’t do it for us.

  • davefragments

Fine, I just got here myself. It was a busy day of nothing important.

  • Mago de Won

    This is pretty exciting! XD
I wanna give too my opinion on how the argument is developing and where it could go. I have seen that many followers wish the best for the characters, which I find charming, but i think most of them are falling in the same line of thought (which is not anything bad) and are not considering that situations that appear bad could end in a surprising turn of events.
    In example:
    – I got the impression that Duncan really liked Kyle and felt sad for betraying him, but that was not enough to stop his plans at the moment. Also he said that he betrayed him because there was a bigger threat lurking below surface, something he was preparing to defend against.
One possibility is that he has grown tired of being evil and he has an opportunity to redeem himself by saving the world, and it would be beautiful to see him giving his love back to kyle.
    – On the matter of Gordon, i think many followers believe that if he is a homophobe that means he hates gay men and wants to hurt them like some intolerant punk, but they are forgetting that homophoby means in the majority of the cases that the guy is gay himself and has great trouble accepting his sexual orientation thus he ends directing his anger, frustrations and fears towards other gay men. This is a fact that has been recently confirmed on investigations, and I back it up because I am gay, and although I have never been homophobic I have known gay men who were before acepting themselves.
That is why i think another interesting turn of events would be that Gordon is homophobic because he likes men and hasn’t accepted his sexual orientation yet, which means he could end up involved in a relatioship with Kyle.

I don’t believe the story is going to obligatorily turn out like i said. I just think this are possibilities most followers are not considering and to see one unfold would be pretty interesting.
Please don’t cast stones at me for this daring opinions.
    *hides behind a bush*

    • Kiri

That would be a really interesting turn of events. While I’m in pretty much agreement that he’s not secure in his sexual orientation, I’ve known straight guys who are like that as well, and if he’s bi, or somewhere else on the spectrum so I’m with-holding my judgement on his (or in fact anyone else’s but Kyle’s) sexual identity. And to be fair to them, even though some people’s sexual identity is clear to them from an early age, some are not – and he may not know it himself.

      • Mago de Won

        ¡thanks for the response!
may i ask what is your name?

        • Kiri

          Kiri 🙂
          (and I’m female)

          • Mago de Won

            oooohhhhh!
            Are you a man?
            Where are you from?

          • Kiri

            Female, Australia.

    • Various theories/possibilities are welcome, so unless you write something very drastic and/or bad no stones will be cast 🙂
These next pages should be very interesting in many ways, but also to show more of Gordon’s personality. I kinda hope Amanda doesn’t step in, or they reach destination, before we know more.

  • Sapfo

Good morning from train on my way too work, too do my last two days at old job, before starting new one next week! ^_^

    • Hope your last two days are easy. At the moment I just want to sit doen but I’m cooking dinner and dessert at the same time o.O

      • Kiri

        Hope it’s tasty 🙂

        • Me too! I’m terrified I’m going to burn everything

          • Sapfo

The risk with cooking and camping at the same time 😉

          • Well nothing got burnt, so yay! Dessert soon. Chocolate cake with cherry topping and whipped cream. 😀

      • Sapfo

I hope so too. It is way to hot for working right now -_-
And there is a musicfestival in my hometown. D:

        • Awww!

Might I dare ask what is too hot?

          • Sapfo

Right now about 20C, but yesterday it got to about 30C. but it’s the humidity that hit me the hardest

          • Humidity is just wrong. I hate humidity. It was a little cooler here today, but that’s going away tomorrow. Bah

          • Adam Black

the weather here perfect. It was blue skys, dry and about 82 with a strong cool breeze…

            its sucks

            tomorrow it should be 85
it was so dry I turned off the AC and opened the window.

          • Sapfo

            that sounds nice.
I was kind of in luck today. Not that much sun, so it was not to hot to work.
            You take care of yourself.

          • Adam Black

you dont have any a/.C ?

          • Sapfo

Sorry, was changing from train too bus. No I don’t. My flat is mostly oki, but not my work place. You know the plage where I really need to use that brain of mine 😉
And today i will be mostly indoors D: don’t they know that I need the sin to live?

  • Adam Black

    hello..
    lurking

    • Sapfo

Hello you lucker boy. How are you?

      • Adam Black

I got weird and annoying problems

        • Sapfo

I am guessing it is not a kilt malfunction we are talking about. (It never is -_-)

          • Mago de Won

            lol. lmao.
            XD

          • Adam Black

            its funny you mention that

          • Sapfo

            Oh?

      • Adam Black

I’m annoyed that its nice outside

        • Sapfo

          Nice outside?
Can you not go there right now?

          • Adam Black

ill prob make it out for a very brief appearance,

prob not enough to do anything to enjoy the weather

          • Adam Black

            im grounded

      • Adam Black

There is no good music on the radio,

        which is a problem,

Because the musical hallucination I am having is really low quality. Ive never heard a bad one before and this one is actually lame.

They usually repeat for hours without changing.

But the sound isnt in my head,

only the music. Its formed from IRL white noise. Its audio pareidolia.

but the source of the white noise is a housefan I have to blow on my laptop to keep it from crashing

so i can make it stop at any time, and crash my computer
