The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 103

490 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter Three—Page 103

Nice work, Paul.

OK. So I have some bad news to share with you all and I’m just going to get right to it. Adam’s father has been sick. And this week his father passed away. As you know, we’ve never missed a page update, but obviously, this is an extraordinary circumstance. Adam very much wanted to keep things going here without skipping a beat (and he, in fact, finished this page up while traveling home to be with his family), but he needs to have his focus there and so I told him it was more than OK to take a few days off to do that, that of course you all would understand. Which I know you will. It’s not my place to get into any more details than I have, but if you would like to send him some love and support in the comments, I’m sure he would appreciate that. It’s a very hard thing.

Since this is officially a twice-weekly comic, I will still post up something for Wednesday, perhaps an excerpt from the printed book, maybe some behind the scenes stuff. And I’d certainly love to see you all there for that. But page 104 won’t be posted until next Saturday. Again, I appreciate your understanding.

In terms of good news, things continue to go well with the Patreon campaign. We’re now at $3285/month with 366 Patrons. That’s less than $800/month away from me sending out the Full Monty, NSFW Kickstarter rewards (and NSFW Sneak Previews) with full nudity to Patrons, and only $215/month from the Goal of me creating an exclusive Patreon-only pin-up/wallpaper. (Hitting that last goal would also mean we’ll have made it exactly halfway to making creating The Young Protectors completely self-sustaining. It’s amazing to think about how far we’ve come in less than a month. You all are the best readers creators like us could ever have. For real.)

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron, and you’d really be helping us out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here, think it’s worthwhile, and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits!),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron. 🙂

So! Fluke still seems to have some luck on his side, The Platinum Priestess is having a really bad day so far (could that be connected?), and the minions are dropping like flies. Does our team have this one in the bag?

Tune in next Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there!

  • DC

    4 in one hit WOW

    • Congrats, DC! Completely snuck up on me.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Way to go, DC!

  • Whoopsy!

  • syllibub

Oh my god. Uh. That was a hell of a hit!

    • Yep. Your wife is dangerous.

      • syllibub

Well, we knew that. Could be worse — I’m pretty sure those four were only halfway competent at best. A discreet Craigslist ad, and they should be replaced in no time.

        • SofiaT

You can’t find good minions these days.

          • syllibub

You really can’t, everyone just phones it in. Despicable.

          • Tyler Griffin

THOSE are the minions PP needs, lol.

  • My condolences Adam. My thoughts are with you and your family.

  • mmmmm Mitch

  • syllibub

I’m really sorry to hear about Adam’s dad — I’m glad he’ll get a bit of a break. He and his family will be in my thoughts. ♥

  • Justin

<3 Adam, take all the time you need. I can't even begin to imagine what it'd be like to have to work through it.

  • So sorry, Adam. My condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. We love the work you do to bring us these beautiful pages. Take care.

  • DC

Good deflection there Spooky, help PP wipe out her own minions!

    • I was so impressed that really had to stop and look at each panel before I read Alex’s message.

      • DC

At first look I didn’t catch that it was PP’s power that struck them. I also didn’t realise at first it was Fluke’s luck that caused that.

        • I definitely didn’t realize it until that last panel esp with PP’s surprised look.

  • *hugs Adam* My condolences for your loss.

  • davefragments

First, please extend my deepest sympathies to Adam. It is hard to lose a parent. I lost me Mom a year ago and I’m still trying to get it all together. So like I said, send my sympathies to Adam and his family. If there is a book that can be signed at the website of the funeral home, please let us know.

    Second — good page.
The Platinum Priestess took aim at Spooky and it wasn’t going to miss. I wonder what the price of that bit of luck is going to be.
    Nice, nice, nice.

  • SofiaT

My condolences go to you and your family, Adam.
Hope you are able to find comfort in each other. xx

    • Tyler Griffin

As terrifying, and intriguing as that idea is, PP had the same “surprised” beams that Anni did when he realized that Spooky was stealing his shurikins a few pages back. Assuming artistic consistency, I’m reading it as a little bit of flabbergasted shock and a LOT of teeth grinding frustration.

I imagine her doing the Dr. Claw: “I’ll get you NEXT TIME, GADGET” in her head”

      • SofiaT

I suspect you replied to the wrong post, by mistake 🙂

        • Tyler Griffin

          I totally did. Oopsie

  • Toli Bera

what if that wasn’t you paul? what if PP needed to steal their souls to power her magic up further?

    • Tyler Griffin

  • syllibub

Interesting, so spells deflect off each other rather than mingling or cutting each other off. I was wondering if Sircea would try to interfere with Spooky’s spell at all if she got a chance, but it looks like she can’t just interrupt it. Bad news for Duncan, good news for Operation Clusterfuck!

I’m with Dave, though — I wonder how much good fortune Fluke’s got left in the tank.

    • This bit of luck was likely expensive…

      • The result was super impressive so I’m not surprised.

      • syllibub

You say, as if you’re speculating — LOL

        • Hey, I report, you decide. 🙂

          • Tyler Griffin

Reported with all the impartiality of the network that uses that slogan? 😉

      • stickfigurefairytales

See, if it was me, I would have tried to hold onto the luck power until it came down to a decisive moment against Anni or PP, or else the instant the hostages’ timer was about to go off. Or when Laampros and co. are about to invade, should it come to that.

        • But can he dole out the luck when needed? Or does good and bad luck just happen?

          • stickfigurefairytales

I could be wrong, but I think he has some ability to tell his luck powers when to kick in (although not precisely how to accomplish the desired goal).

          • Then he better start conserving his stash!

          • davefragments

In the first chapter, Fluke catches the falling man at the price of having a lamp post (I think that’s right) fall on his car. I think of it as a balance between good luck and bad luck. Both occur together but he can direct good luck where he wants it. The bad luck just has to happen.

          • stickfigurefairytales

No, I think he saved a person from being hit by rubble (the falling rubble being deflected by a lamppost). The car had been totaled earlier, well before the incident.

          • davefragments

Could be. I haven’t gone back to check. I have a DVD playing and I don’t want to go rummaging that deep into the computer.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Just checked for you! Flyboy caught the falling baby and Spooky caught the falling man with his magic. The part where Fluke uses his powers is here (in the first panel he’s responding to Tsunami’s comment that the building they’re charging into is not going to be stable after that fire):

          • davefragments

AHA, that’s what it was. Thanks.
The old musical CAN CAN is the DVD and I”m singing along with Maurice Chevalier and Frank Sinatra.

          • Okay Dave. So, does that GET you luck or COST you luck? Heeeeee….

          • davefragments

Improves my mood. Earlier this evening I was doing maybes Eric Cartman raging out ht politicians in the vilest terms. Musicals tend to calm those tiny fits of anger down to silly sing-a-longs.

          • Now THAT is pure truth. 🙂

          • Why does that make it sound like Dave has a spooky “computer basement”…. complete with a lot of steps before you get down there…

And there (natch) there are torches and spiders…

Hey, I’d hang and watch a DVD also!

          • davefragments

WIFI and a computer that doesn’t like to do movies and more than one internet page at a time.

          • Tyler Griffin

Chris has a thing for dark and dank dungeons of possible nefarious purpose? Hmmmmm….. *taking notes*

          • makes some sense.

      • OUCH.

    • Tyler Griffin

I would expect counter magic to work similar to D&D rules, simply because I think D&D got it right. To actually counter a spell another caster must either cast the exact same spell in inverse. Or Cast a spell of the same strength with the exact opposite effects. Cone of Cold vs. Burning hands, ect. ect.

Anything else risks either deflection or horrific mangling entanglement. Wanna see what happens to Anni if he gets hit with polymorph and a an Evard’s Black Tenticals at the same time? >:D

    • Klaus

These two particular spells interact that way. Maybe because Spooky’s is a shielding spell, among other things. How other spells might interact is anybody’s guess. I would expect that there are spells specifically meant to suppress other magic. But is magic just magic, or are there several kinds that require different antispells? Anything is posible.

  • I just love the look on Sircea’s face in panel 7. Total WTF moment.

    • syllibub

Doesn’t matter if she has to take from her own side, she will have the highest body count in any fight!

      • That’s one way to put a positive spin on it. 😀

And look, more donated blood for the wedding preparations!

        • syllibub

Yes, and this time we don’t have to listen to a bunch of screaming while we extract it. Silver/platinum linings all around!

          • Win/win indeed!

Plus I’m sure this whole thing can be written off with the insurance company, too. What with the whole being covered for loss of minion due to the meddling kids clause

          • Scooby?

          • YAY!!!! *throws confetti!*

          • Still the seating arrangements are going to be hell… well… just because.

      • Ha!

      • Oh puhleeeeze, after 6,000 years… who’s counting? 🙂

        • Tyler Griffin

          Clearly, the true Diva.

  • Cydney Sabin

    Uh… I just now realized that there’s an “F” on Flukes’ outfit… Wow… I’m really… unobservant…

    • Don’t feel bad. I just noticed it too!

    • stickfigurefairytales

I was pretty embarrassed the first time I noticed that, too.

      • Yeah.. *lol* Wasn’t it you and I who noticed it on the same page? A while back. I remember mentioning almost the same time as someone else (within minutes) one day. Some time in chapter 2.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Hee hee, yeah.

    • Tyler Griffin

Don’t feel bad, about once every 2 or 3 months we have a small ritual for the latest person to have just noticed it, 😀

      • Cydney Sabin

        No virgin sacrifices, I hope?

  • syllibub

Amanda’s expression is so great in the final panel. Like, “Are you serious?”

Or maybe she, too, is concerned about how their luck might turn.

    • SofiaT

I hope that look is not because she just spotted someone attacking Paul from behind…

    • davefragments

You only gloat the day after you are successful, not during.
That cutie pie “look what I did” expression means you are not looking at the villain and the villain has a chance to do villainous thing in return. Can’t take your eye off an enemy, ever.

    • I was thinking that as well. Tallying the luck from the time they have left in the battle.

  • Very excellent “Wanted” moment. I think I like Sircea in that position more than Morgan Freeman.

  • syllibub

Did Sircea lose the head of her spear in the seventh panel, or is it supposed to be obscured by the smoke coming off of Darrel’s fried cranium?

    • I think she did lose her spear! Sure looks like it.

      • syllibub

If she has, we might find out whether that’s an impediment, or if she can cast freehand like Spooky perfectly well and the staff is just her preference.

        • I would be surprised if she couldn’t cast freehand. She is very powerful and has many resources.

          • syllibub

          • Tyler Griffin

I’ve been assuming that it was something like Firelord’s Staff, or Witch Hunter Robin’s Glasses. A ceremonial piece which helps focus and/or possiblya slight enhancement. A conduit more than an actual magical relic itself.

    • That or she only has so many shots before she needs another staff?

      • syllibub

Ha, like in Fire Emblem — a certain number of uses per weapon.

        • Exactly. That has to be frustrating in battle especially if you lose count of how many magic blasts has been blasted.

          • syllibub

I’ve had enough swords and lances unexpectedly break on me to feel that pain.

      • Maybe her spearheads are interchangeable. Remove one, put on another.

        • Like a spear head magazine!

          • That’s one of the BEST visuals ever!

          • *chk chk* locked and loaded!

          • Klaus

            The Swiss army spear.

          • Tyler Griffin

Evil Inc.’s new care package, the Mystic Spear Pleasure Pack. Comes with Mind control, Force Blast, Shielding, Ribbed, and Studded.

      • Tyler Griffin

This is PP, not a Gay Male

    • Hmm. I’ll make a note to fix that…

      • syllibub

Mystery solved — thank you Word of God!

        • Tyler Griffin

          All Hail the WOG!

      • Garnasha

That was actually about the response I expected to see when I read syllibub’s comment 😛

        • syllibub

Haha, I figured, but wanted to note it anyway.

    • Good job… never let the wife’s accessories be neglected! 🙂

  • Hours Left

My deepest condolences and sympathies to Adam and his family.

  • Guys, I think that’s a sign that you don’t want to be hit by one of the Priestess’s magical blasts. That’ll sting some methinks. 😀

    • Tyler Griffin

I dunno, they don’t look like the feel a whole lot of pain… 😛

  • stickfigurefairytales

Aw, I missed camping! Early page this time.

    • It was a stealthy page…

      Hi Stick!

      • stickfigurefairytales

Hi Gryphon! I mailed your valentine! 🙂

        • Yay! I will let you know when it gets here.

Huh. Someone sent me a message saying they got a weird return to sender message for a Christmas card even though the address was correct. Will def let you know.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Awesome – thank you!

        • Shoot, is it to late to go me me me me I want a valentine? I meant to say something and it slipped my mind.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I can definitely send you one too! Just send me a message with your mailing address either on tumblr or (if you prefer) I can give you my email.

          • email is good. 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

Okay, I sent you a message on tumblr with my email address. (This is starting to feel like a secret agent-type mission)

          • Haha! Yes. I suppose it does. dun dun, dun dun dun dun.

          • stickfigurefairytales

It might get there after Valentine’s Day since I probably won’t be able to mail it until Monday, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

          • Just getting mail is nice!

      • A very stealthy page!

    • Hi Stick!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hi AJ! How’s it going?

        • Not too bad. Waiting for the cake lord to make a mug cake. 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Oooh, nice!

  • Wildroses

The fight has been going so well I am getting really pessimistic about this story. It’s too early for the happy ending, so obviously some anguish and drama have to happen before it. I’m wondering if my initial theory of the team winning this fight, then having their victory turn to ashes when they hear of the terrible event Anni & PP were trying to prevent and realising they are powerless to stop it. But isn’t too late for someone to be overpowered or Spooky to be overcome with blood loss and lose control of Duncan. Things could get really bad really fast if Spooky is no longer a threat and Duncan becomes a factor again.

    • Tyler Griffin

I wonde,r if the YP manage to actually thwart the ceremony, if the interfence with a ritual in progress will be enough to bring the walls down all at once instead of the slightly more prolonged collapse PP was talking about earlier? Or if this is a case of the Watchmen, the actual triggering events were completed an hour or so before Hero and Crew arrived?

  • Hours Left

Is anyone having a problem getting their Patreon emails? At first it was fine, but the last week or so I haven’t been getting any email updates despite various projects (including TYP) posting new content.

It’s not a huge deal since you have to go to the website anyway, but it’s kinda annoying. I have all emails turned on via Patreon except general site update so I don’t see why it should be happening. :/

    • You’re not the only one. My bf who’s also a Patron is also not getting the updates. I have a tech support note in to them. Hopefully it’ll be fixed soon, but feel free to bug them at It’d be good to get this fixed.

      • Hours Left

Yeah, if it doesn’t get fixed in the next little while, I’ll shoot them a message.

        Thanks Alex. 🙂

      • Tyler Griffin

I hadn’t even realized I was supposed to be getting emails…

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’m so sorry to hear about Adam’s father, @alexwoolfson:disqus
Of course we won’t mind waiting and having something different on Wednesday. Please give him our love when you hear from him.

    • Hours Left

Of course. I don’t think anyone would mind something different. However much time everyone needs.

      • stickfigurefairytales

  • ctsuda

Please pass along my condolences to Adam.

  • Kendall

My sympathies to Adam – very sorry for his loss!

  • Xalun K

Adam, so sorry to hear about your father. We lost my husband’s father this past May, and know how difficult it is. You take as much time as you need, and we’ll all still be here with all our love when you get back. <3

  • Jen Roberts

Sympathies & condolences to Adam on the passing of his father. Of course we understand! *magical internet oreos*

    • *magical internet oreos* are now officially a THING! Yaaaayyyyy Jen!

  • Xalun K

Also – That was some seriously badass luck…. I just hope it hasn’t run out! Amanda looks concerned that it’s about to turn against their favour. O_O

  • Jen Roberts

I appreciate Fluke’s powers more than ever now. That was *awesome* (and more panel-breaking)! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some drooling over Commander’s hair to see to (and mop up after)

    • Phyre Storm

      Yeah. Her “hair.” Sure. 😉

      • Jen Roberts

I have no idea what you might be implying. *cough look innocent*

        • Phyre Storm

To be fair, her hair IS very pretty. Heh heh…

        • Hey, when your hair looks that good in a telepathic overview bubble… well heck. That’s pretty much as good as it gets.

    • Tahir Raines

This page has me convinced that Fluke could actually be a formidable foe if he ever went evil. Since his powers rely on balancing his luck in opposition to another’s, he should potentially be able to give himself constant good luck in a fight since all his good luck would directly translate into his opponent’s bad luck in the fight, which would keep the scales of luck in balance.

  • TwilightDreamer

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss Adam, please take all the time you need and be with your family, your work is more than worth the wait. Please take care.
As for this page, couldn’t help but laugh at the result, especially Paul’s cheeky grin at the end :).

  • Phyre Storm

Someone has probably pointed this out already, but you’ve got a fugitive apostrophe taking refuge in your ‘Heads up!’

Adam, I’m really sorry about your dad. Take all the time you need.

    • Why yes I do. And you’re the first to point it out. 🙂

      • Phyre Storm

Yay! Grammar Nazi points for meeee!

        • Fixed!

          • Phyre Storm

Well done. Actually fixing stuff instead of being like “Uhhh…I’ll fix that later” points for you!

  • stickfigurefairytales

I hope that this isn’t rude in light of Adam’s loss, but I did want to thank everybody for sending kind thoughts for my mom’s knee surgery. It went well and she came home from the hospital today, even earlier than we expected.

    • That’s awesome, Stick!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I know! I’m really happy.

    • davefragments

      Good news

      • stickfigurefairytales

        It sure is!

    • Sorry I haven’t been online and so missed this but I’m glad you’re mom is doing fine!

      • stickfigurefairytales

No problem, Gryphon, and thank you!

    • Phyre Storm

Why would that be rude? Yay for your mom!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Aw, thank you!

    • I’m so glad. Love to MOM!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you, Chris!

    • Very glad to hear that good news, Stick. 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you very much, Alex!

    • purplefoxglove

      Glad to hear that 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you! 🙂

    • D. Garrett

really happy it went well. give her a big kiss.! 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Thank you, I will! 🙂

    • Eris, elder daughter of Nyx

-cheers- I’m so glad your mom is doing well!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Aw, thanks, Eris! Me too!

  • I think that blast deflated poor Darrel’s head. o.O

  • Alt+F7

Full commiserations to Adam and his family. Also this page is stunning, one of my favourites so far.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Commander is really, really good at multitasking.

  • Awwww, Adam, been there myself and there is nothing more difficult. All my best wishes are with you. Thank you so much for this wonderful page and all heart to you and your family.

More thoughts to come on this page, but I think it has to wait for the morning.

Thanks Alex. Again, there is nothing better than the clear, caring information we get about the issues of producing such a complex piece of art. Our support to all three of you as you all balance art and life. Take care!

    Best wishes,

  • JesBelle

I am so terribly sorry for your loss, Adam.

  • fujoshifanatic

My condolences Adam; I recently lost a close relative, so I sympathize with your loss. My thoughts go out to you and your family. 🙁

  • Tahir Raines

Take all the time you need, Adam. I don’t even want to imagine losing a parent.

  • Tahir Raines

Fluke’s luck powers are very useful. It helps that they don’t depend on his own magical power or skill, but instead turns his foes’ powers against them, which actually makes him a great adversary to someone like Sircea who is very powerful and uses magical beams/energy slashes that allow a chance of being redirected due to incredibly bad luck (for them)/good luck (for him).

    • Yes. 🙂

    • Tyler Griffin

Never get in a roommate feud with Fluke, lol.

    • Mickey Phoenix

I’m somehow picturing Fluke’s power as “Once per combat, change any D20 roll to a ‘natural 1’.”

      • Tahir Raines

        He would rule at DnD

  • Adam Black

Page looks great as usual. We will be waiting for you , when you are ready to come back.

  • This is what I get for being up to my elbows in writing a blog post about magic ( Ahem. )

I completely missed the part about Adam. Please convey my condolences, and, as a patron, I am just fine with going without for a while.

  • Tyler Griffin

Well, THAT’S just rubbing lemon juice in the papercut

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Is that move even legal in illegal circles? I really needed this tonight…..I’ve been fighting an uphill emotional battle of late….I guess I’m just lonely….but trying not to admit it to myself.

    • PFG9000

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

        Thank you

    • *hugs*

    • stickfigurefairytales

      *hugs you*

  • Sapfo

    Take care Adam!

    • Tyler Griffin

That’s a very good observation. Although I’m sure that Fluke would prefer to not get free refills in the middle of action.

  • Klaus

Very bad news indeed. My condolences.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I would also like to express condolences to Adam and his family…..May God comfort them all.

    Dearest Adam,

We all know in some small part of our minds that our parents are going to die before we do. Ideally, no parent would ever have to bury a child so facing our parents mortality is a given. However, our hearts refuse to accept such a horrific reality.

What are we after our parents die when we are adults. Are we orphans? Are we simply on our own now? And should we be ashamed that suddenly we feel like children, bewildered, lost, afraid, hurting, and not sure where to turn for comfort as the source of our comfort for all our life is no longer in our life. Suddenly you feel like you’re flying without a safety net and you feel so very alone.

You’ll go through all the stages of grief several times and if feels like running a marathon through a never ending staircase of steps; anger, grief, denial, acceptance, denial, grief, a little bit of bargaining, anger, anger, anger grief, and a whole hell of a lot more bargaining.

You will laugh at the good times. You will cry a lot. You will hug and people will tell you how sorry they are until you want to scream, “WHAT ARE YOU SORRY FOR??” but you know it’s the only thing they know how to say because you’ve been there too on the side of the comforter feeling a little relieved that you were not the one doing the comforting.

And no matter how many people you lost or how much you had accepted an impending death, each loss is different and your heart can never be prepared for the shock.

Though you feel like this searing agony of sorrow will never fade and even if you don’t want it to.. take comfort in knowing that it will fade and it won’t. You’ll get used to the pain and you will carry it through out your whole life because your father meant something to you. Good or bad they formed you and loved you and you loved them and you won’t forget them or ever stop missing them.

I wholly and completely know how you are feeling. I lost my best friend, my mom 12 years ago on Wednesday. I lost my father 16… Both parents gone before I was even 30. Before I could have children. And I felt cheated and angry and sometimes I still do all this time later.

I’ve written this to let you know you are not alone. You’ll never be alone. People know your grief intimately. And I promise things will get better even though in the quiet you feel like you’ll never be ok again.

I also want you to know that my heart sorrows with yours. I will think of you tonight when I meditate and send you thoughts of love and healing. I’ll think of your father and hope that my well wishes for him speed him onto whatever happens to a being after we die.

I don’t know you but I know you are loved. You are talented and wonderful and I bet your father was proud (even if you had difficulties between you).

Love to you Adam. So much love that your heart is overflowing with it and you have a few moments of peace in your grief.

    • I wish I could upvote this more than once. I can write long comments, analyze others deeply, but when it comes to giving my own personal emotions (and putting them into words) I often fall short. I can’t seem to express myself as I want. Your post just about say it all.

I’m sorry about Adam’s loss, so very much, and my condolences to both of you. I know yours was years ago, but I don’t beleieve a condolence can be said too late.

      • PFG9000

        Thank you

    • D. Garrett

that was eloquent, thorough and beautiful.

to adam: i agree very much with Nonny. grieving is so unpleasant. and ur heart cries. and sometimes u may feel inconsolable. but take comfort in knowing that ur father is no longer struggling and is at peace. u may find that his voice never leaves u. listen to his voice, take comfort in it. u will be okay.

  • kuku

My sympathy. Take all the time you need.

  • Klaus

7 minions are taken down on this page. This makes 21 in all. Commander’s rough estimate was 20 minions. There can’t be many left. Panel one shows that at least one is still standing.

    • purplefoxglove

Pity the guy…all alone against Fluke and Commander!

  • Klaus

Wednesday would have marked a full year reading chapter three, not counting the three months spent on the bonus comic.

  • justkeepondriving

Adam, we so appreciate the time, effort and dedication you put into this comic. You deserve some time off. All the best to you and your family~

  • Krondor2000

Take care. Peace be with you.

  • Klaus

Is one of the minions carrying a spear? There is none to be seen in panel one. If not, what is that thing at the left edge of panel two?

    • His dagger I believe.

      • Klaus

A dagger with a rod separating grib and blade? Or a dagger with an uncomfortably thin grib, which the wilder is for some reason holding only at the very end?

        • I believe that’s the dagger’s hilt. If you look in the first panel, the second minion coming at Fluke head on has a dagger in his hand. I also think that the dagger may be more ceremonial than anything.

          • Klaus

That is most likley it. These daggers where not made for fighting, or for real work. The shape may even have some influence on the outcome of the ritual.

          • Tyler Griffin

Or, perhaps it’s a case of butterfingers and the dagger is simply making a bid for freedom?

          • Ha!

  • AseretZone

:< I'm sorry to hear that Adam's father passed away. Take all the time you need to mourn, Adam. *hugs*

Now, about the comic page. I must say, PP is having a LOT of bad luck today. XD Not only did she fail to hit Kyle (which would've upset Duncan for sure), she failed to hit Spooky, and took out four of her own guys in the end! And her cape is still a wreck!
All is not lost for her, though! She still has The Key!

    • Jeffrey Jacobson

Hard to say how much of that might be fluke’s influence.

  • Tyler Griffin

I dunno though, PP certainly did a very good job of making everyone Blink. They ALL have flinched or glanced off task to track that rogue blast. Also, Kyle seems to have invoked the Wrath of Smokey in the first panel…

  • Jeldenil

Adam, we all understand you need time off. Please take the time you need. My condolences.

    • Michael

I came here to say almost exactly that. All of us are with you in spirit, Adam.

  • Saxon_Brenton

First up, condolences to Adam and his family.

Secondly, am I the only one thinking that the Priestess didn’t simply try to aim at Red Hot, then miss (because of Fluke’s power) and achieve an unwanted ricochet off Spooky’s magic shields?

I’m imagining that after a few failed attempts at toasting Red Hot and Tsunami, the Priestess was probably jostling about (under the pretence of trying to get a proper shot at the elemental twins) but actually angling to get a clear shot to incapacitate Spooky and thereby free the Annihilator. (I will assume that her stunning backflip on the previous page was part of this cunning plan.) This would be a strong tactical move: to get one of the heavy hitters on her team back in play. Unfortunately it didn’t pan out because of Fluke’s luck powers.

  • Ilona Fenton

My condolences to Adam & family.
I can’t believe the dedication he has shown the fans by finishing the page at a time like this. Thank you Adam.

  • Kate G

Having lost my grams this summer, I know the feeling of losing someone who was ill for a long time. Adam, I truly send my deepest sympathies. It’s really hard to lose someone, even if you were prepared for it. It still hurts. I send my biggest hugs and Zena sends her biggest doggy kisses. She’d send Greenies, but I had to tell her humans don’t eat Greenies.

I know we can all say we truly appreciate and love the work you do. I’m sure there will be lots of hurrah’s when you come back!

  • Epistasthai

Adam, I’m so sorry to hear about your father. My deepest condolences to you and your family. And thank you for all the hard work you do on The Young Protectors.

  • Kate G

Good work Spooks and PP! You knocked out the bogies 1-4 at Fluke’s 6! I don’t think Sircea was planning for that!

If only it manage to deep fry Amanda’s bogies too….they were in about the same place. XD

    • Jeffrey Jacobson

I just heard spooky wasn’t too badly disrupted by the PP’s magic bolt bouncing off his own magic stream. It could be dangerous if flukes good luck power worked by taking luck away from somebody else and not being too choosy who it is.

      • Kate G

Uh, I have no idea what you are talking about?

        • Jeffrey Jacobson

D’oh! sorry about that. I meant to type “I just HOPE that Fluke’s luck powers…”

        • Jeffrey Jacobson

D’oh! sorry about that. I meant to type “I just HOPE that Fluke’s luck powers…”

My point is that in some fictions, there are magical ways to make yourself lucky buy making someone else unlucky. A common trope is the luck power with uncontrolled and unpredictable consequences. Usually, it gives you the good luck you asked for, but messes up something else you care about.

I was concerned that the price of redirecting Sircea’s bolt to take out those cultists might be to mess up Spooky’s green magic thing that’s keeping Duncan up in the air.

  • Rhiannon D’Averc

Sorry to hear about Adam’s father – I hope that he is dealing alright, as much as can be alright in these circumstances. A little time off is absolutely called for and understood.

  • Awesome page!

To Adam: My condolences. It’s terrible to lose a parent, and you have every right to take your time to grieve. We’ll be here waiting.

  • purplefoxglove

Adam, I’m so sorry about your father – take as much time as you need, you have our full support and love!

  • Kiri

Adam – family before all – look after yourself, my dear. You have my sympathy (I’ve lost my dad) thinking of you and your family at this sad time. All my love and support. If there’s anything I can do, I will.

  • My condolences, Adam. Of course your family comes first for now.

  • I’m sorry for your loss, Adam! *HUG* Of course we understand. Take as much time as you need. We’re all thinking about you and we’ll be here when you get back. <3

  • Satyr Ryder

I don’t post a lot in the comments. But this is definitely a case where I will. Adam, you have me deepest condolences. And as other’s have said, please take the time you need.

  • Lillihandra

You have our sympathies, Adam. Do what you need to do. We’ll wait.

  • Mumin

Condolences to Adam and his family.

  • I wasn’t able to camp tonight, and I come to a page + page note that makes me want to say so various things that I almost didn’t know where to start, but I’ll go with the most important ones.

Adam, I’m sad to hear about your loss and my condolences go out to you and near ones. While you made this page ready for us during your travel home, might have helped you in some ways, but time to listen to Alex now. If you need to do some art, to help you think of other things then do it, but otherwise focus on yourself and family.

@alexwoolfson:disqus this is my personal opinion. I’ll look forward to everything you might put up online while no pages, but should it ever be necessary to skip a update (without any art posted) then do so. If times like this isn’t a reason it could happen then I don’t dare think of what could be.
I know you’re also on Patreon now, and that you’re paid for updating twice a week… but everyone is allowed days off, no matter what. At a week like this it would have been understood completely. You guys haven’t missed any updates in like ever! Be it x-mas or New Years, you being sick – and you still updated. For almost the entire comic it’s been twcie a week updates…

As much as I love this comic neither of you are robots. Once or twice a year – TAKE A VACATION from the comic. Skip an update or skip a whole week (now two pages). With pages + the kickstarter, you have been so busy for a while – you even have another day time job, Alex – and sometimes I get a little scared that you’re so focused on getting updates out that you forget to fully relax and have fun with something else.
I know you love the comic, so this IS doing something you enjoy, but too much of it will just makes it another job sometimes.

I know you still have the kickstarter going, so I know you can’t fully let it go, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a week off? Also now that the date for shipping the kickstarters out come closer. You’re going to use a company to do that, but last preparations are going to make you so busy.
Had I been you, I would have said that this would skip an update or a week, because this is a damn understandible reason to why it could be needed. But I’m not you so it’s not up to me.

Listen, I’m sorry for this small rant but I almost lost my own dad nearly three years ago because he basically burned himself out. He focused so much on various projects that his blood pressure went through the roof and gave him a (luckily small and almost ‘harmless’) bleeding in the brain.
He put so much on his plate, despite us sometimes warning him not to, that he forgot to fully relax a little. He got a brutal wakening call, and now he has no choice by how much work he does. His body forces him to relax if he tries to get too busy again.

I’m not saying that you, Alex, working this much will do the same, but I’m SO not wanting to risk it either. Reading about Adam’s loss (amongst others I know who lost their father in the last year’s time) and then seeing you saying that of course there would be some kind of update anyway .. it hit a nerve.

TYP will continue at least a couple years longer, and then some other comic will most likely follow. There should be two more kickstarters coming with TYP (not nearly as many stretch goal works but still busy). This will again put pressure on the time spent next to the twice a week updates.
Alex, everyone needs a time off. Skipping a whole week once, and maybe one update once or two next to that, every year – it won’t kill us. NOT doing it for years, who know what that would do to you?

While none (or very few) knows you personally outside the comic you have become important to all of us. You ARE this comic’s daddy. You’re someone we talk with, have fun with, share bad times with. Heck, you’re the one who made some of this community into nearly ‘family’.
None of us wants to loose our ‘daddy’, and ‘daddy’ needs some alone time here and there <3

*Phew* This became a much longer comment than expected when I started it. I'll be back to comment on the page itself later. I need to unwind a little first xD

    • Jaq

Everything Danish says and more! You are running this like a business – and businesses take days off. You might try the technique that Amber of ‘Dan & Mab’s Furry Adventures’ is using. She updates 3/week and has given herself up to 6 sick days and 6 vacation days a year she can use for matters of well-being.

If you give yourself 4 & 4 – even if you don’t use the days – you can remind yourself that your own health [physical & mental] comes first. Given the choice of a missed update – or you collapsing/losing TYP – I know what I’ll vote for.

    • Thank you, Danish. There’s a lot of wisdom in your words. I do feel a tremendous sense of gratefulness and obligation to y’all which is very motivating to me (and for Adam and Vero as well) to never skip a beat, and always deliver. And you’re right, since the start of Artifice I haven’t taken any time off. And… sometimes I do feel a little crispy around the edges.

Me taking a break in the middle of this big battle wouldn’t be the right time. But I’ll take your words to heart. And I’ll start thinking about maybe planning in a couple weeks off during the year, two weeks vacation just like normal people get, with plenty of warning ahead of time. It wouldn’t happen any time soon, but I’d love to be able to go on a week-long silent meditation retreat, which I haven’t been able to do since I started webcomics.

Anyway, it’s very kind of you to think of all of us at this time. There are lots of factors that go into making a project like this sustainable, and you bring up a good one. Right now, it’s Adam who needs our support. But your kind words won’t be forgotten. 🙂

P.S. Working with that fulfillment center looks like it might fall through and I’ll need to fulfill the orders personally, but I’ll tell more in the next KS update.

      • Klaus

This is bad news. Is there no other option? Did you read Jamey

        Stegmaier’s blog on the subject?

Yes, I know. I’ll wait for the update.

        • I hadn’t read Jamey Stegmaier’s blog on that, thank you for the heads up. I looked through the articles. There is some good basic advice that tracks with my experience from my last KS, but it looks like Jamey’s methods, while maybe great for game makers in the EU, would likely add additional complication and expense to my fulfillment (the opposite of what I’d want from the process.) The advantage of the fulfillment service I was hoping to use was that it was local, it was a one-stop shot, and wouldn’t involve shipping rewards twice.

There are always other options. Whether there are better options remains to be seen.

          • Klaus

Actually it is about how to deliver to the EU from outside.

          • Hmm. I saw that that was part of it. But is Stegmaier U.S. based? There was something I got from reading the earlier posts that part of the reason for all the extra effort was that they were not.

          • Klaus

Yes he is. The extra effort is to arrange it so that he pays the custom processing fee once, rather than each backer paying the fee. And also to ensure that the price charged is the full price the backer has to pay. No VAT (and processing fee) to pay when receiving the package. It is included in the price he charges his backers. A bit more work for him, but it saves the backers both trouble and money.

I think that you will find that the EU friendly logo will increace the number of European backers.

          • Right. I bow to his choices. They are valid ones. But by my lights, international shipping is already so expensive (and often labor intensive) for the Kickstarter creator, and international shipping costs are constantly on the rise (mine doubled between the time Artifice got funded and when the books were ready to ship), that I’ve come to a different conclusion.

Stegmaier might feel that maximizing international backers works for his bottom line and thus wants to increase that number as high as possible. But for me, both in terms of time and expense, I’m much more skeptical about the benefit of that business model for most U.S. based Kickstarter creators. Frankly, I was tempted not to offer any international Kickstarter rewards for TYP ETE V1, but we have so many wonderful international readers here, I simply couldn’t in good conscience do that. But I was going to do it in a way that made sure I absolutely could deliver on what I promised.

A book is a different animal than a board game — it’s offered at a significantly lower price point (no one’s going to pay $50 for a trade paperback, which was the rock bottom pledge for his Euphoria set) and in the U.S., with books you can take advantage of media mail rates (which are unavailable for international shipments). It’s one thing to sell a book internationally from my online store where the shipping costs are computed instantaneously at the moment of shipping, but with a Kickstarter, in my experience, fulfilling books internationally at some unspecified date in the future is risky. And taking on even more costs (shipping twice by including multiple international fulfillment centers, customs fees)? If I could set my minimum pledges for a physical reward at $49, $59, and $75 like he did, I too might be able to offer all-inclusive “free shipping”, but not at $20, $25, and $30 which are the non-crazy prices people would expect for a paperback book.

I certainly have no desire to expose any of my readers to trouble and unnecessary fees if I can legally avoid them, but I remain unconvinced that the lessons he learned and his business model are as universal as he seems to think they are. And in the case of Kickstarter, “failing at a business model” often means that backers don’t get their rewards.

By my lights, it’s better to err on the side of sustainability, than to catch Kickstarter fever and try to maximize your overall total number of backers. The point of a Kickstarter is to be able to create something that would otherwise not be able to be made any other way. It’s not a pay day. If you’re looking to make money, it’ll be after the Kickstarter is fulfilled and you have a bunch of paid-for merchandise to offer the general public.

But, in truth, I haven’t studied all his posts closely. And from some of his “EDIT” notes in the early posts, it sounds like he got burned by a few of his choices and learned some hard lessons. Perhaps his conclusions in later posts might turn out to be more helpful in my particular case.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Adam. Focus on your family and healing.

My heart goes out to you Adam in this difficult time. It’s always difficult to lose someone close to you as I’m sure many of us know. Virtual hugs and love as oceans divide. And thanks for all that you do.

Ii lost my father almost six years ago, and I know how hard it can hit you. Take all the time you need, and do what you need to deal with this situation.

  • bronakopdin

oh noes 🙁 it’s only a little over a year that a younger cousin on mine died in a car accident… and it’s impossible to get over loosing a family member that easily… to only take off one week (and even that only after being convinced to do so!) you’re admirable Adam! Though I agree with Alex that you should take care of yourself with these matters, of course people always try to convince themselves to be fine when they’re not, take your time and I bet noone would say a word if you took off even longer! It’s your father we’re talking about. Do a proper mourning… noone can go on without, it’s up to you how to do it exactly, people mourn their own way after all.

I wish for you to manage somehow and I really feel with you!

(and when i read Alex post after I’d read the page I just though it would be nice if Fluke could share his luck with you ^^)

  • Shella_Bluey

I can’t imagine the sadness you must be feeling, Adam. Take all the time you need.

  • Marc Bloom

Adam, I’m keeping you in my thoughts. Have strength.

  • Duke of URL

Sorry to hear it, Adam – I know how painful it is to have a loved parent ill. Kindest wishes for you and him.

  • Derkins

If they can actually manage the rest of those thugs so they’re out of the way, they will have a lot more efforts to focus on the big stuff, like handling the two villains, and having the hostages. wonder how much time they have left.

  • Derkins

It wasn’t a parent, but I did recently lose a dear, dear friend (and ex boyfriend, actually) a few months ago. He was hit by a drunk driver coming home from work. True grief is something I hadn’t ever dealt with before, and there are so many things that are surprising me about it.

I’ll be going about my merry life, and then a single thought or reminder of him can trigger a total breakdown just all of a sudden. Happened to me yesterday. And the grief stages don’t come chronologically, you will be in a different one moment to moment. And the rawness doesn’t fade, it remains just as vivd with the passage of time. You don’t just “get over it” one day. You have to construct a new way of going about life.

Most of all, it surprises me how therapeutic it is to talk about them. Before when I heard someone had lost a loved one, I got typically uncomfortable cause I didn’t want to make it worse by saying the wrong thing. Now I know offering support and compassion is the most valuable thing you can do for a person experiencing loss. But, for me especially because I moved away from home and I don’t know anyone in my state who really knew him. I’m missing that community that cared about him. Taking time for Adam to be with family is crucial, and I’m glad for him that he’s getting to do that.

So, so sorry for your loss, Adam.

This page is so funny, but the news are so sad. *hugs Adam*

  • Jeffrey Jacobson

Adam, you have my sympathies. Loosing your dad is a hard and lonely thing. It’s one of those passages in life the grow you up and all, but basically suck and would rather do without.

Thank you for bringing us this great strip!

  • RaionSan

Adam, a big hug. Take your time, you need it.

  • Sunfire

My thoughts and sympathies to Adam, it’s never easy to lose a parent or any close family member. The comic will still be here whenever he’s ready to be able to come back to it, the important thing for him now is the time he needs to focus on the personal matter.

As for the comic itself, definitely a lot of branches left hangining from! hehe My main concern is for Spooky’s spell/magic – yes it deflected the bolt from PP’s staff, but did that bolt give a jolt/zap that made the magic flicker – even for an instant? That would be all that Duncan might need to break free…

The minions and PP are beginning to force Kyle and Gordon’s attacks out of synch a little, hope they don’t get too disrupted. Kyle seems to be going well with PP though.

Hope Spooky’s blood loss has slowed a little too.

I love the way PP and Fluke both look at the fallen minions in a sort of ‘wtf?’ way, and the Commander’s expression when Fluke brightly takes it all in stride lol

Stay safe up there Flyboy – your vantage point’s invaluable! 😀

  • Abbi Orenstein

    I send you many hugs

  • Timothy Carpenter

Before my dad died I didn’t think I’d miss him, but I did – and do.
    You’re in my thoughts, Adam.

Oh, Adam, I’m so sorry! I offer you my internet hugs. But I must state for the record that I agree with Alex that it’s more than okay to take a some time to focus on being with your family. So, please take care of yourself and your loved ones. We readers at YP have your back! We can wait a few days for another comic page. What’s most important to us is your well-being.

  • Holly

My condolences to Adam. The lose of a parent is a difficult thing. Personally I would have been fine if the hiatus was a week or more, just due to the circumstances.

Related to this page; Is anyone else worried that Paul is going to run out of luck at a crucial moment now?

    • TwilightDreamer

if he doesn’t turn his attention back to the fight then yes 😛

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

My heart goes out to Adam and his family. I hope everything goes smoothly. He can take all the time he needs. We will wait. He needs to concern himself with his family and self.

  • So is everyone in agreement that Sircea needs to activate that key. So, does that mean all those nice people in the (forgotten) glass box to go splat? Orrrrrrr… could she need some Kyle-fire? Or something else.

I mean the minions don’t seem in any shape to give more blood, even if anyone had the time.

I think Duncan has lost his reading glasses and, regardless, that book (the Sirceanomicon) got singed by Kyle, so I don’t think Duncan will be doing anymore DIY spelling, even if he can get that Spooktacle off his mouth.

Sircea is clear busy blasting the place up. The spincter of power is rather bwoke.

So, I just keep wondering when she’s going to do something scary with that key and I just keep thinking the military is going to arrive to late. Clearly they’re out of town and not easily available (I keep picturing two guys in jeep arriving a week late with a map… looking puzzled… as they view the empty wreckage and dried blood.

    • I’m wondering how she activates the key? Does she smash it open and say a few words? How is the key freed?

  • Terytha

Oh Adam. When I lost my mom I was a mess for weeks. Take all the time you need, and don’t worry about us. <3

So now the question is, was that diverted blast really lucky? Didn't it just free Anni?

  • Thoughts, good karma, and prayers to Adam and his family in this sad time.

  • MonRohr

Sorry for your loss, Adam. Take all the time you need.

Sorry to hear for your loss and absolutely no worries about delays. Be with your family. That’s what’s important right now. We’ll still be here when you get back.

  • davefragments

I haven’t figured out how to post on Tumblr. That Wonder Woman cartoon is a treat. I’d pay money to see THAT SIGHT for real.

    • It is a fun scene. 🙂

      • SofiaT

It’s a scene that’s true on so many levels.
If only there were more lassos of Truth around…

        • davefragments

AGH! No, no, no. I never ask for “the truth, the absolute truth” because someone might actually say it and then you have to face the “truth.”
          wink, wink
I prefer to live with ambiguity and justifications (both teeny, tiny, itty, bitty white lies.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about:

  • maimordev

Adam, we all are with you. Be sure that we won’t be mad if you need a few days off, we know this is a very hard moment for you. You and your family are in our hearts, and we hope you will be able to overpass this awful moment. All our love and support for you. (and sorry for may bad English, it’s not my language, but I try…)

  • krissdevalnor

Of course we understand. Family always comes first. Regarding the comic: Awesome page 🙂 Love the humour you throw in here and there. And the newsletter: Thank you thank you!!! Its so nice to hear the “its the guy in the arena” – because you are SO right! 😀 I myself am working on a “crazy” T-shirt project, which keeps failing and failing and your newsletter really made my day today, just as I was feeling down after yet another failure and money spent on ads without results. Thank you for that newsletter 😀 (And the comic aswell of course)^^

    • Thank you so much, kris. Glad you liked the humor on this page, and very glad you liked the newsletter update. I’m trying something new there and it’s really good to hear that what I said was useful for you. 🙂

  • rgleon9986

We totally understand; take however much time y’all need. We’ll still be here. Our thoughts are with y’all..

  • rgleon9986

As for the action, PP looks like she’s going to shit bricks. I can just see her blood pressure going through the roof here. Everything she tries is either failing or backfiring on her. I hope she isn’t holding back some kind of high-powered omnidirectional blast to take everyone out who isn’t super durable.

  • Tof Eklund

    Love and sympathy.

  • We appear to be less than $100 from the next milestone!!!! Go TYP fandom!

  • D. Garrett

another comforting / relaxing song imo. (not exactly uplifting tho.) but it induces a calming state for me.

  • Tiffany Seay

Will be praying for him! Family time is always important. I guess the best thing I can wish him is happy memories of he and his dad together. Can’t wait to see more of his work but I think we can be patient for a while ;). Hope he has a safe trip there and back home.

  • Klaus

We do not have an URL that always points to the current page. The URL for each page contains the page number. Tomorrow Alex will post a page without a number. How are we we to find it?

    • The link will be posted on my Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr feeds as usual.

      Alex on Twitter:

      Alex on Facebook:

      Alex on Tumblr:

Also, you can always hit the Last button (or Shift-Right-Arrow on your keyboard) to go to the most current page of this comic. Sometimes, due to browser caching, clicking doesn’t take you to the real last page on your first attempt. But if you refresh the current comic page you’re on (cntl-R on PC, CMD-R on Mac), it should clear your browser’s cache and then hitting the the Last page link should work.

      Hope that helps!

  • Saxon_Brenton

A few days ago I was thinking about DanishWolf’s suggestion (below) that Alex and co. take a scheduled break from the comic every once in a while.
And by random association it occurred to me: that would be kind of like ‘The Great St. Valentines Day Weekend Double-Ding Event’ of 2014, when Alex went away for a few days and the mischievous readers took the opportunity to try to break the donation bar by overwinding it.
And then I remembered that we don’t have a donation bar to even try to break anymore. And I made myself sad again :’-(

    • I remember that one. It was when we actually got the donation bar to start counting down again, wasn’t it? Even then Alex posted pages on schedule, he just wasn’t checking the site in the meantime.. we did do some mischief those days 😉

      • Saxon_Brenton

[arched eyebrow] “Those days”? I’m pretty sure we still do. I mean, that’s why Alex got Admiral Jane and Sophia as co-moderators, right? To keep an eye on the rest of us…

        • Shhhh… We would soooo not be like that now. Not at all <..>

  • OnyxLight

    Loving this battle!

  • andrea

HAHAHAHAHHA, now that’s what i call a lucky strike XD

  • We still camping? (I hope I don’t sound callous for asking >_<)

    • stickfigurefairytales

I think we might still be, since Alex said he was going to post something (just not a new page of the comic).

      • *hugs sitck tightly* Thank you! *cuddles* Receiving them made me very happy. ^_^

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Aww, I’m so glad!! ^___^

          • It made me all warm and fuzzy and makes me want to hug and cuddle you until you get annoyed.

          • stickfigurefairytales

<3 Eee hee hee, that would take a while! 😀

    • I’ll definitely be posting something tonight. 🙂

  • davefragments

To borrow a quote from a movie:
“I’ll be back.” but with cookies and milk.

  • stickfigurefairytales

In honor of the possibility of learning how Spooky got his cap, I’d like to propose a challenge: How Spooky Definitely Did Not Get His Cap. Anyone can propose an idea, and submissions can include anything from single-line comments to full-on fanfiction. And………GO!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      (here’s one I thought up):
The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft the cap from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that he, Spooky Jones, was to wear it.

      • Now see, I would believe this!

        • stickfigurefairytales

Me too, but I doubt it’s going to be canon.

    • Well, He definitely did not steal it from a baby.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Even though it totally would have been easy.

        • Totally easy. I mean just walk by: “Ooh, cool cap.” and snatch.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Babies have terrible reflexes.

          • And really, what does a baby need with a cap? The baby can really rock it like Spooky.

          • stickfigurefairytales

It didn’t even fit. Dumb baby.

          • Exactly. No appreciation for that awesome cap. Just spit up on it and chew the bill.

    • Spooky is secretly an immortal being from the ancient land of Atlantis, and his powers are really just very futuristic technology that is run by his hat, a device created by the highly advanced people of the city.

      • stickfigurefairytales

It only works if he wears it backwards, though.

        • Of course. Wearing it frontwards renders it useless and seemingly harmless, a perfect disguise to anyone who suspects its power.

    • stickfigurefairytales

He didn’t find it on sale at Walmart.

    • He didn’t get it from the top of a snow man.

    • On the weekends, the boys do arts and crafts. Spooky made a hat.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Spooky is playing on one of those grapple-claw prize machines, but when he tries to grab a Buzz Lighyear doll he ends up grabbing the cap instead. When it gets discharged out of the slot Spooky picks the cap, and at that point he realises that the cap has a little stylised image of himself as a ghost. And he thinks: “Huh, I wonder if there’s an omen in that?” And he puts on the cap and goes back to trying to get that Buzz Lightyear again.

      • And from that day on, Spooky got any prize he wanted from the claw machines.

    • To go along with the King Author trope. Spooky pulled the hat from a stone and will one day be king.

      • I think you win oh god XD

        • He thought it was a joke at first. How ridiculous. A hat in a stone. But a light tug and voila! Lights rained down, and the sound of heavenly choirs…etc.

          • Now they all need to be King Arthur characters. The Commander is Lancelot maybe?

          • Well we have Sircea as Morgana.

          • Ooh yes. Duncan can be her son. I can never remember his name. Which makes me ashamed considering how much I love the story.

          • stickfigurefairytales

          • Yes that’s it! I will go crawl into a shame hole now.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Nooo, come out of your shame hole! It’s okay!

          • Fine, cone of shame

    • One hat to rule them all, one hat to bind them.

    • stickfigurefairytales

He was out walking in the mountains late one night, when he came across some strangle little mountain men drinking moonshine and playing ninepins. They invited him to join their game and he accepted, drinking as he played. After the game ended he was overcome with sleepiness, and lay down for a nap. He awoke clutching the cap, only to find that a hundred years had passed since the night before.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Another idea for what did not happen: It’s his sidekick. Literally an extraterrestrial sidekick from the Planet of Hats. And it makes all sorts of snarky, side-splittingly funny comments, but only Spooky is close enough to hear them.

      • stickfigurefairytales

As a result, he has had to perfect his poker face in order to keep from laughing at seemingly random moments.

    • Are we really writing hat fanfiction.
      Is this happening.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Darn right it is!

        • I love it.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Me too! I’m really happy people are having fun with this idea. I was pretty excited when I thought it up.

          • You are a genius doll

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Aww, thank you! *blushes*

      • We’ve had shower fanfiction while camping among others…

        • stickfigurefairytales

I like comment section fanfiction. ^_^

    • Cydney Sabin

Spooky definitely did not order that hat on SkyMall. I’ve checked.

      • stickfigurefairytales

On the other hand, you might be able to find Sircea’s staff there.

        • Cydney Sabin

Ooh! I didn’t think of that! Be right back. Gotta check…

    • When he was in Hell, he spied the cap atop a craggy formation with George looking full-on eyeball pointy staring-at-it directly and decided to make his way towards it. It was a long, arduous journey, full of triumphs and disappointments but he made to the rocks. It took him three days in hell time (at least two weeks here) to climb up, and the last section of the climb was so strong with George’s staring…staring…always staring that it took a tremendous effort to reach up and grab it…

But he managed it and when it put it on his head, the cap claimed him for his own and whispered, “Where to now?”

And Spooky Jones said, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”

      • stickfigurefairytales

So that’s how he got back from Hell!

    • The cap is the sorting hat’s cousin.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Does it announce whether or not people are Spooky?

        • or worthy to date/be friends with Spooky?

        • Well that’s how he got the cap. The cap, it had prepared a snarky comment because too many who were not Spooky had dared place the cap on their head. It was actually struck mute, because OMG OMG OMG! IT WAS HIM!! The cap was actually squeeing, fancapping as it were. Finally it announced in a breathy squeek: “You are Spooky! And you are in me!”

          • stickfigurefairytales

            *snickers immaturely*

          • I had a feeling…as I was snickering as I wrote it. 😛

      • I am now picturing Spooky as Dumbledore
        And its fucking beautiful

        • Maybe in a 1000 years. And he’ll still be wearing that cap.

  • I always disappear after my first post >:( NOT THIS TIME

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Yay! Hi Amaya!

      • *hugs tightly*

        • stickfigurefairytales

Wanna make up stories about how Spooky didn’t get his cap?

  • davefragments

    Made it.
    Anyone want cookies and milk.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I’ll take some!

      • davefragments

        maroon or white chocolate macadamia

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Did you mean macaroon?

          • davefragments

            Bingo – Macaroon.
            My spelling is off tonight

          • stickfigurefairytales

Apparently there is a difference between macaroons and macarons. I was intrigued to learn this, but it explains a lot. Macaroons are the ones made with shredded coconut, and macarons are the little puffy ones that come in lots of different colors and flavors.

          • Whoa! I hadn’t thought about them being different cookies but obviously they are. Silly me.

          • davefragments

I never knew that. I have a niece who trained as a pastry chef. I’ll have to ask.

    • Me me me me!!

      • davefragments

Dark chocolate chip molasses. . .

    • I’ll take a cookie, if that’s okay. Can’t drink milk.

      • davefragments

red velvet puffy things with whipped cream inside.
(pssst, I forgot the name of the puffy stuff)

        • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, I want some of those!

          • davefragments

            they are yours

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Thank you!!

          • davefragments

            pâte à choux that’s what I forgot – – pâte à choux

          • stickfigurefairytales

            They sound great.

        • Red velvet puffy things are good but I’ll take whatever you have, Dave!

  • In for camping. Hiya, everyone!

Sticky: My heart is all warm with aglow. Thank you!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hooray! I’m so happy! o/

      • I’m going to hang them up on the back of my front door so I can see ’em when I leave and come home 🙂

        • You can hug stick when I decide to let go.

          • I am more than happy to wait my turn 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Aww, I love you guys.

      • Those were SO CUTE!!!!

        • stickfigurefairytales

Oh, did you post pictures? (asking Gryphon, sorry)

          • Not yet, but I will shortly!

          • Oops thinking of the other ones you posted… :S

          • stickfigurefairytales

Nifty! I’ve thought about taking pictures of ones I’ve made before sending them, but I’ve never gotten around to it.

  • Alt+F7

So *this* is the time when everyone’s camping. Guess the summer break means I can join in for once. :3

    • Hello! Welcome to the campground. *moves aside to give you room around the fire*

      • Alt+F7

Hi! *scoots over into the gap by the fire*

    • Hiya! Yup, this is the time. Welcome!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Welcome! Want to make up stories about how Spooky did not get his cap with us?

  • God camp was dead a minute ago, now I can’t keep up with the comments XD

    • We are officially approaching the “high” camping phase now.

      • The mob of comic-high fans slowly marches towards Alex with wide unblinking eyes “Aleeeeeeex…”
(I know that’s not what you meant but that’s how I choose to take it)

  • I also love how there are like 20 comments at once and then everything is silent for a minute. I just picture every fan collectively taking a deep gasping breath before diving back in and typing furiously.

    • For me, it means I’m on another tab.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Yep, checking tumblr for me (typically).

        • stickfigurefairytales

These memes aren’t going to appreciate themselves.

          • So, so well said! For me it’s Twitter and Tumblr.

          • I am currently reading a Drarry fanfic and if they don’t freakin kiss soon I am going to scream. It is already 36 chapters in dang it!!!!

          • 36 chapters and NO KISSING? I feel your pain!

          • FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (^_^)/

          • hehehe my favorite HQ!!/Pacific Rim fic is now 155k and loves ripping your heart out piece by piece… the best kind of writing!

          • This one is 145333 and counting. the next chapter was only updated yesterday

          • Those are the best (and worst sometimes too). I wish this one could be made into book form. I might just print a copy when its done because I KNOW I’ll read it over and over again.

          • YESS!!!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Gonna go make some tea – can I offer anybody else some?

    • I’m good.

    • Yes absolutely! I have honey for anybody who wants some in theirs :3

      • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, I’ll take a little of that.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Here’s your tea! *hands you a mug*

    • davefragments

      yes, please

      • stickfigurefairytales

Any preferences? I’ve got black, green, assorted herbals…

        • davefragments

          Green, please

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Here’s your green tea!

          • davefragments

        • I’ll have assorted herbals

          • stickfigurefairytales

          • stickfigurefairytales

I brought you a ginger-peppermint tea, just like I’m having!

          • ^_^ So no biggie if we get sups confused ^_^

    • I’d love a cup! Thanks.

Edit: Do you have any fruit flavored kind? If not then an herbal works.

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Any particular kind?

      • stickfigurefairytales

Got you some Earl Grey, but if you don’t like that, I have others.

  • We are basically the biggest collection of role playing dorks ever.
And I love you all so damn much 😀
    (Sorry for spamming the comments)

    • stickfigurefairytales

No worries! It’s fun when people comment a lot. 😀

    • What spam, I don’t see no spam.

    • We ain’t spammin’, we’re talkin’!

    • Hello! Definitely not spam… it gets talkative on here 😉

      • Starr! *hugs tight*

          • *pouts* but I haven’t made you uncomfortable yet!

          • I can wait all night!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Does it count if I’m uncomfortable about making Gryphon wait?

          • …..not as much

      • *fluffs up fur & curls up* okay, whomever needs it more 😉

        • I will take a hug 😀 I get cold easy lol

          • Yay! *sneaks over & shares warmth*

          • Here, you can have a sip of my tea, stick was super nice and made us some :3

    ( Wait did I say that out-loud? )

  • I think we did this once on Teahouse and it got weird but I want to again anyway.
Anyone up for truth or dare?

    • davefragments

      too scary.
Me, not you. Last time I did that was at work and they learned never to do THAT again.

    • Adam Black

You mean adult version of ‘Confession or Mayhem’ ?

      • Lol I’ve…never heard of that.

        • Adam Black

    • Adam Black

I’ll play But You have to choose which One I choose —- Consent is important to me ( and so is skirting responsibility for consequences )

  • Tindi

Oh, man. My thoughts are with Adam! Losing family is tough. 🙁

  • Ninhursag

Nice work Paul, indeed. Losing a family member is tough.

  • Jackal

    I’m late, but my condolences.
