Sure, The Annihilator was all swoon-y with his “Villains like me?” quip, but it’s adorkable Kyle in the last panel that makes me weak in the knees…

We’ve blown past $70,000 with The Young Protectors Volume One Kickstarter Project which means that all backers are going to get to see the SEXY HEIGHT CHART FOR THE GUYS, with all the guys from The Young Protectors team lined up by height in their underwear. And right now backers are currently voting about whether I should make that image with the underwear off!

And Kickstarter backers are now geting a whole stack of stuff! In addition to a gorgeous softcover book of the Prologue, Chapter One and Interlude One, what other goodies are backers going to get? Seventeen glossy 2.5″ x 3.5″ Trading Cards, 2 SFW Bonus Print Options, 3 NSFW Bonus Print Options, a PDF of The Annihilator’s Classified Government Dossier that reveals his secret history, fully nude pin-up art of all the characters except The Platinum Priestess and Hunter & Killer and a 25-page bonus comic featuring Spooky Jones and Commander that won’t ever show up here on the site!

Any of that sound like stuff you’d like? How about this HEIGHT CHART vote, do you want to have a say in whether that underwear comes on or off? Would you like to actually be able to see that revealing scene?

I am seriously loving the intelligent conversation. Anni seems genuinely interested in Kyle’s opinions, and we’re getting to see that Kyle isn’t just a pretty redhead in it for the nookie. Absolutely awesome! All of this occurring against such a gorgeous backdrop is just icing on the cake! It almost makes me homesick for my home state. Almost.

  • davefragments

Bravo! Bravo Kyle for not being a lovestruck fool.

  • exova

I’m proud of Kyle for keeping his wits about him – he’s not deluding himself into thinking that Duncan must be a good guy just because he wants to get some. Kyle’s probably getting a sense of what he’s willing to look past for the sake of their…whatever relationship they have now, but I bet he’s able to draw a line somewhere, and will withdraw if Duncan crosses it. I have faith in his judgment, even if it’s horny eighteen-year-old judgment!

I’m really excited the Kickstarter’s going so strong – both because of all the excellent bonuses and because it’s wonderful to see you guys getting so much support for such a wonderful project! I do wish Sircea was getting a little more love in the polls (god I love her, she’s so foxy), but hopefully we’ll get around to voting in her Romance card eventually. It’s not like I’d ever complain about getting all this smoldering art of the dudes, haha.

    • Thank you, exova! (And I think it’s very likely we’ll get that Sircea Romance Card. Fingers crossed!)

      • KiannaLeigh

*explosion sound, lies dead* Sircea is my webcomic wife. I would LOVE that! *hearts forever*

      • exova

I hope so! Probably after the more popular characters’ Origin cards have been voted in – that seems to be the pattern.

  • dezree

Alex have i told you yet today that i love you and your writing makes me believe the world has moral intelligent people in it again? The questions this is leading into make me smile *grins* what is good or bad anyway?

Oh and FYI some time ago i got my Artifice book, loved it but the edges were a little banged up. The protective cardboard was about 2cm smaller than the book… you may want to ask your shipper to use sheets of cardboard in the envelopes that are greater than the size of the book for TYP when it ships…
PS if i can cover all my bills with my next pay cheque i am SO backing TYP!

    • Howdy dezree!

Thank you very much for the very kind words! I’m glad you’re enjoying what I’m trying to do here.

And actually, in terms of shipping, I’m going to be handling it myself this time and sending the books in cardboard boxes instead of the padded envelopes that shipper used. It’s more expensive to do it that way, but I just think it’s a better, safer way to ship books. (And I’m sorry to hear that your Artifice book did not arrive in excellent condition! Send me an email through the Kickstarter email system—i.e. the Contact Me under my name on the Artifice Kickstarter page—and let’s talk about how I can make this right.)

Thank you again for your support and good vibes!

  • Sanbai

This comic is so beautifully well written! Ahh, I’m having some major fangirling for Alex’s dialogue right now! Thank you Alex, you making this budding writer so happy to read your words!

    • What an awesomely sweet thing to say. Thank you so much! 😀

  • CommodoreZelda

Is it just me, or does Kyle suddenly look a lot more manly now that he’s officially an adult? Like, just his postures… He seems more self-confident than before. I dig it. <3

  • Whitewings

Haha, white collar criminal 😛 Not like those ones haven’t been going to the slammer recently.

    • Midwestmutt

Not nearly enough, just a token few.

      • John

The sacrificial lambs to keep the herd of sheep from bleating too hard.

  • Interpolation

    I enjoy this foreplay.

  • Jamie Dutton

I love the fact that Kyle is at least trying to see past all the lust. I remember how difficult that can be. How you want to just let go of everything and not worry about the consequences. But, that little voice in the back of your head is being even more annoying than usual.
Heck I’m not even a superhero or anything like that, so I can only imagine the inner struggle that Kyle must be going through!

Alex I lovelovelove your writing! It’s always making me think and feel and remember things so vividly! Veronica and Adam did even more fantastic work on this page! I can almost smell the cool mountain air.
I’m so glad you can afford to fly her up here to sign books!

    • Thank you, Jamie! I think you have some good insight into how Kyle must feel.

And yes, Adam and Vero did an awesome job with this page. I’m so looking forward to being able to fly her up here to sign books… and hang out! 😀

  • Alexander

For an anarchist, Anni sure loves money…

    • KiannaLeigh

anarchists and communists aren’t the same thing, I think. I tentatively consider myself both so maybe I should figure that out ….

      • Alexander

Yes, I am an anarcho-communist. However, anarchy, even without communism generally dislikes excessive wealth and capitalism, and I think seeking to accumulate wealth in that way is a bit odd for an anarchist.

Anni referred to himself as an anarchist early on, when pretending to threaten to reveal Kyle’s sexuality if he didn’t kiss him.

        • John

The anarchist movement grew up out of the ‘have-not’ section of society however the philosophical or political viewpoint doesn’t really reference wealth in any way. It DOES say that those who CAN help SHOULD, which would definately include any who have accumulated vast wealth; which means there is no insentive to do so.

        • KiannaLeigh

I’ve always separated anarchy and communism into totally independent political and economic strings of thought and (having other things that occupy my limited head-space) haven’t thought enough about the details to cross them. For me it’s normally: “Money = economy = communist/socialist thought”. However you make a excellent cross ideological point.

But in all likelihood, Anni idealism isn’t as pure as it ought to be, him being a villain and all.

  • That look in the last panel. Kyle wanting him not to be such a bad guy.

I wonder how Duncan will answer this, because so far he’s never gone into details about his current life. He even switched the talk so it’s Kyle who ‘tell’ him how the last six years are different, and then only give the one thing; That he’s right about Duncan not liking to hurt people (up close?) anymore. The one detail that will give him brownie points in a hero’s heart.

Hmm. so Duncan changed his criminal ways around the same time Kyle got his powers, now that I think about it. I’m trying to place that one under coinsidences.
(Suspicious me is suspicious about a lot today XD)

I’ve been loving their flirty, seducing and yet deep talking throughout the comic. The background info we get of Kyle and and the more or less confirmed info we get about Duncan. Basicly Kyle being horny and intrigued, but still not completely forgetting who Duncan is.

No doubt here that Duncan is baiting Kyle. It’s like a game of fox and hare. Sometimes I wonder how much the ‘hare’ is letting himself be baited, and how much is based on his inexperience with seduction and sex.

Kyle is not experienced, but luckily he’s not letting his ‘little head’ do ALL the talking *lol*

    • Nightshadengale

(Sorry, this is a rather awkward place to do this, but since neither Kickstarter nor Disqus appears to have a PM system…)

Danish– I saw the comment you just posted on the Kickstarter. I’m getting the prints but I honestly have no idea what I’d do with 25 prints besides hang 5 or so up and stick the rest in a drawer. (I don’t imagine my husband would be too thrilled about superhero pinups all over the walls.) I was going to ask in the comments if anyone wanted the extras anyway, and I see you like EVERYWHERE–email me at if you’re interested.

      • I have now seen your comment and will write you an email 🙂
You can edit your email adress out of the comment now.

    • exova

You make some really good points about how Duncan is subtly controlling the conversation. I like how mysterious his motivations are – you know he’s got to be manipulating the situation somehow, but in what way, and to what end? And I wonder what Sircea stands to gain from it; I doubt she’d lend her skills out if it didn’t benefit her in some way.

But yeah, the dialogue between Kyle and Duncan in this scene has just been top-notch. The tone of the conversation flows so naturally from flirtatious to serious and back, and it’s clear they’re both being a little cautious, feeling each other out. I really admire how well the writing and art complement each other and bring the scenes to life – Alex has brought a great team together for this comic!

      • Thank you, exova! I’m really glad to hear you’ve been enjoying the dialogue and yes, I feel so lucky to be able to work with Adam and Vero! 😀

  • Midwestmutt

Don’t forget to vote daily. Let’s keep this comic in the top 100! At the least would somebody vote for me for the next week while I’m on another internet-free vacation? TYP VOTA SI

    • goodchaos

      wait.. What? Vote where?

      • Midwestmutt

Scroll back up to where the comments section begins. The links are on the right. Vote daily, not just when a new page is up!

    • Feverfew_M

I’m going to try to vote a bit more often than I’ve recently done, then. Have a nice vacation! 🙂

  • Jason Wexler

I’ve been reading for a couple of weeks and of course love the story and art, however as someone who describes as a classical anarchist, I think the thing I love most is how accurate/right you have gotten Duncan. While I don’t personally approve of everything he has done in his past (classical anarchism is non-violent), it is clear you have done your homework and know a little something about how anarchists think, I am loving where this conversation (between Kyle and Duncan) is going!

    • Sanbai

Wow, really? I know I could flounder about on the internet and try to find what classical anarchists appreciate as a philosophy, but would you do me the honor of listing a few of their characteristics? I’m curious to learn how what you know of anarchists matches this particular character.

      • Takehai

As a * very* *brief* summation, a true (or “classic”) anarchist believes in no regulation, no government. It is up to each individual to “govern” themself. There is a lot more to it than that, but that gives you enough reference to understand what is being referred to here. If you want more info, the Wikipedia article is actually a fairly good treatment of the subject.

    • John

Hmm, yes. He does seem to espouse self-determination doesn’t he?

    • Thank you very much for the compliment, Jason. I will say this, though: The Annihilator is a complex character who lives in a very different world than the one we live in and just like I’d be very hesitant to have him be seen as my description of an older gay man, I’d be hesitant to have him be seen as my take on anything else from our world. There will be places where his value system intersects with those of a classical anarchist, but working within that worldview is not necessarily something that I feel bound to in terms of the choices he makes or even the values he espouses.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

I’m not too gung ho about the “Have and Have-Not” theme here….I belong in the latter group. Thus I read every panel of every comic twice a week….but feel uncomfortable because I cannot afford to help…even a little. would love to have even a fraction of what Duncan has but I would have to come about it honestly…that is who I am.

    • John

Yeah, I’m sure many people do. But even if real-life there are very few ‘good’ have’s and many bad ones.

  • amanda

you should read Artifice. that is awesome as well if you have yet to read it.

  • fakesubmite

That doesn’t make it good Kyle… but for now just drop it and drop to your knees and get some of that…white collar crime.:)

  • Darkflame173

God lord I gotta get in on the kickstarter before it’s over XD

  • KiannaLeigh

The Annihilator is Neal Caffrey! OMG. That’s like White Collar in age reversal. Swoony! And next week: I’ll have money for the kickstarter!!!!! ^_^

  • KiannaLeigh

    Sherlock reference, brain melted, OMG.

  • i wonder, what anhi means by that, anyway.

    ‘ignorant,’ not innocent.

(kyle.. ..i think Those are words to run away from very fast!)

    • John

An innocent person is one who commits no crimes. However a moral person in this society can be said to NEED to commit crimes to maintain a moral stance. Injustice and corruption at every level requires action to some degree otherwise your inaction supports the system you criticise.

This may be what Anni is referring to. The only way to be a moral innocent (though neither Anni nor Kyle mentioned morals at all, I grant you) is through ignorance; which is no defence in truth.

Thems still alarm-worthy words though, as it shows Anni acting as Judge and Jury on people he has no right to judge. A bad precedent.

      • in this “society” you speak of, playing nice with the enemy isn’t going to suffice to effect Change.

this has long-been made clear for me, john.

being ‘innocent’ isn’t really enough, unfortunately.

it is to be noted, duncan only said he doesn’t get pleasure from hurting people — and not that he’s completely discontinued the practice.

anyway, i’m curious to know more.. ..just another day or two, and i’ll know how our annihilator continues making money, hand over fist.

        • John

Oh I agree (and that includes a wish to know the details of Anni’s income), and I suspect Anni does as well.

    • KiannaLeigh

Or approach with caution and have one’s eyes opened to a new truth.

  • Saxon_Brenton

As a number of commenters have already said, I like the fact that Kyle is using his brains. And there’s one further thing that struck me about that, about the dynamics of the writing of the story.

In the past I’ve noticed that Alex has structured Anni’s character with amiguity. Then, because we the readers haven’t been sure whether Anni is sincere in his romantic interests for Kyle or is setting up a scam, we’ve been engrossed in the story, regularly coming back for more (and of course throwing money at the donations bar in order to get more pages 🙂

I think we’ve got something similar here with Kyle’s character, but in this case it’s more about being written as other than a one-dimensional character. Alex has set up a conflict of behaviour between the two main facets to Kyle’s personality. One is the somewhat dorky young man who is insecure in his sexuality, flummoxed by romance and occasionally makes mistakes. The other is the dedicated and quite competent superhero. So in any instance where Kyle needs to react to Anni, we’re left wondering whether he’ll react as as the lovestruck youngster or the dedicated crusader for justice. Inherant dramatic tension there.

  • Monty

It’s not called white collared crime… that’s being a real gangster, that is!

  • cherryblake

hey, alex i wanna ask this question for a long time, are you going to make more comics like these?

    • Takehai

I’m fairly certain he has some very long term plans for this comic, as he described Artifice as an online graphic novel, whereas he has always described YP as serial webcomic. As far as other projects, he has mentioned he has other things he wants to do, but whether or not he will get to them soon is another question entirely. . .

    • I do have plans (and even a full outline) for another comic I’d like to do. But my first priority is this Engaging the Enemy arc of The Young Protectors which consists of 5 chapters and some Interludes/Side Stories. I’d only start another comic if I felt it wouldn’t in any way harm the telling of this one.

      • Wait. Engaging the Enemy ARC? So this is gonna continue after the 5 chapters, just in a different arc? (totally rereading my fave chapter… again)

        • If there is interest, there will be another arc of The Young Protectors focused on another one of the heroes. 🙂

          • Yay! And thank you for responding to my email so quick.

  • Jeffrey McLaurin

    The Annihilator joined the NSA!

    • MalikTous

I should hope he ‘takes out’ the NSA rather than join that bunch of slimy peepers and crooks!

      • Takehai

If you are referring to the recent reports, those appear to be horribly exaggerated. That journalist ought to stand up and apologize and admit he manipulated the facts. I’m all for keeping our privacy and the government out of our business, but if they aren’t doing anything unreasonable, there is nothing to blow a whistle on.

        • Jeffrey McLaurin

People that defend the corruption of corporations and the government astound me. But that’s not what this thread is about so lets end it here…

          • Takehai

I don’t defend the corruption of either. I personally think it’s disgusting, but I also recognize there is little that can really be done about it. Corporations for all intents and purposes run the government, which is a good chunk of the problem.

But outright lying about key facts is not only poor journalism, it’s blatant rumour-mongering of the worst sort, and paints the media with the same tar brush as the ones they are trying to expose.

  • HermeticallySealed

    “So, you’re like a . . . .white collar criminal now?”

I can just see what follows.

“I invest heavily in Wall Street.”

    “So . . . Yes?”

    • John

No. Rich people have spent a lot of money making sure the best ways of making money are legal.

I may be bitter about this, and be very judgemental regarding it, but it’s true nevertheless. I’m well aware my bitterness is that of a have-not looking at the have’s, so feel free to ignore me.

      • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

And many of them are still caught for tax evasion every year. They may have tried to legalize the best ways of making money, but a fair few still try to game the system illegally. Sad but true.

I wonder if Anni puts his quasi ill-gotten gains into philanthropic efforts? If he does, is it to deflect attention from shadier dealings, or is it because he wants to do good? If he wants to do good, is it because he’s got a young adulthood of guilt to assuage?

    • Jesslc

Frankly, once you have a lot of money there are plenty of legal ways to make more money.

For example… with nothing more than the interest from 2 million dollars in a term deposit, I’d get more money than I currently earn in a year. The problem is getting the 2 million in the first place.

I’m sure Anni has a lot more than money than that thanks to robbing all those banks (and probably better ways of investing it). Whether or not Anni is making money legally remains to be seen… my prediction is that it’ll likely be something quasi-legal, (because that fits with the ambiguity of his character)

      • HermeticallySealed

It was a joke. Not that deep.

  • John

Ah Anni… all those questions you didn’t answer…

  • Feverfew_M

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!! We can see who liked which comment again! Yay!!! o/
…hey, I kinda missed that feature. *shrugs*

    • Feverfew_M

*lol* Five upvotes and all anonymous? Very funny, guys! 😛 😀

    • Jesslc

So I just noticed with seeing who liked our comments that Mr Wolfson himself liked one of my (many) speculative comments… Does this mean I’m on the right track?

      • Feverfew_M

I think he likes speculations in general, but it might just be that you’re not very far off… We’ll see. 🙂

        • Alex does like speculations in general. A lot. 😉

  • Anni has a witty response for everything, doesn’t he?

  • MalikTous

Anni’s behaving more and more like a yakuza; the Japanese organisations tend to shift to their legal arms once those produce the required profits and limit their ‘extralegal’ activities to defence, unlike the Italian-based crime families. Will Anni take a no-kill vow and the accompanying offer to be paid as trainer for the YPs?

  • Thank you so much, Burhan! I’m glad you’re enjoying this! 😀

  • Thank you so much, sara! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! Thank you for letting me know! 😀
