The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter One—Page 8

64 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter One—Page 8

Fluke, Ladies and Gentlemen.

We have new Fan Art from DaniVilliers. And… it’s Kyle and The Annihilator as My Little Pony ponies! I cannot tell you how much seeing this tickles me. (It’s taking all my willpower not to start belting out “If you want to ride… ride the white pony!“) And I know we count more than one brony among our readership here. You have to check this out. 😀 (Thanks, DaniVilliers!)

Look down below! We’re now at $257 towards the next bonus page! Woot!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporters Alba C. (who makes their third generous donation to The Young Protectors!) & Olga W. (who makes their fifth generous donation to The Young Protectors!) and a warm welcome and grateful bow go out to new supporters Elaine T., Olivia G. & a new Megan S. for their generous donations over the last few days!

And OMG, floored-and humbled, deeply grateful, superhero strength hugs go out to longtime The Young Protectors superfriend Meagan S. whose amazingly generous $100 donation marks their sixth amazingly generous donation to this comic! You rock, Meagan!

Thank you all so, so much! It looks like it won’t be long before we have the next bonus page. (And as it turns out, I think you’ll like the timing…)

So, this is one of my favorite pages of art in all the comic so far. And it’s all about the boys. It should come as no surprise to you that I like 2D guys and I think that Adam did an exceptional job with making the guys on this page cute, especially our buddy Fluke. But in real life, what I like the most is what some would call “sweet-faced” guys. And for me, that usually translates as a guy with a roundish face and a great smile. I’m a sucker for that. And so when I see Fluke in Panel 2 drawn with that roundish face, those bulging biceps and that cocky smile… Well, I’ll just say it puts a smile on my face too. 🙂

(Actually, it’s not all about the guy linework for me on this page. I think Vero did a stunning job with the texture of that background building, the character rendering, and really just everything. And of course, Adam just nailed the “acting” of the characters on this page—totally captured the vibe I was going for in the script. This might not have the flashy fire effects of the last few updates, but like I said, this really is one of my favorite pages so far, art-wise.)

Anyhoo! Enough about me and my affection for 2D hunks. Let’s hear about your affection for 2D hunks! What kind of 2D guy do you like? And how does that relate to what you like IRL? 😀

Oh, and I should mention that now that we’ve got everyone’s powers identified, it’s time for a very special next page. You won’t want to miss it. Hope to see you there!

  • Ron

    So he a luck guy

  • nebi_lan

D: I love his smile , kind of sexy

  • LUCK POWER. I’m so proud of myself for nailing that one. ;D

  • Timothy Hickman

I want to say, this is an awesome comic, just like Artifice although this is my first time commenting 🙁
Love Fluke’s power, but I prefer looking at Flyboy 🙂

    • Thanks, Timothy! I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying The Young Protectors!

(And it’s always interesting to hear which character is someone’s favorite. 🙂 )

  • Erica

omg, in all honestly what i like in a 2-d guy?? That’s hard given the fact that my most favorite untouchable man on earth is Takeshi Kaneshiro… can I count his 2-d art in Onimusha? He was the face of the main character n e way…. or is that cheating? XDD jk jk When I read a manga, I look for the guys with the glasses, beautiful hair, and decently built frame, muscle and height. Those get me all the time in a manga… lol I think the first guy i really ended up liking is from a manga called Our Everlasting by Toko Kawai. The character was named Houryu. I fell in love with that guy hardcore. XD

  • Fluke is a cutie, Alex! Lol, you’ve got good taste 🙂  As for my kind of guy, 2D and rl, well sure a hot looking guy will stop me in my tracks. But the thing that pushes my buttons is when a guy has brains and isn’t afraid to show it off!  I’m a sucker for a cutie with an IQ 😀 Doesn’t have to be rocket science or math related, either. I’ve had major crushes on guys who can build a robot out of coke cans and rubber bands or rebuild an engine block without batting an eye. I started going out with my last boyfriend after he put on his glasses to do his taxes! Yeah, I’ve got a magane thing going on too ><;

    • Hehe. Thank you. (And I have a thing for smart guys too…)

  • Wow, Luck power seem so terribly double-edged… I wonder how that works… Does it means his personal life must suck all the time in order to be able to save people?

  • Oh, now who is just showing off! 😀 .. and in a typical guy way during a typical guy talk ..just add a twist of superhero *lol*.

Boys and their toys .. no wonder the leader of this group is a woman. She keeps them in line XD

Love this page and the humor both in action and dialog. Made me giggle loud.

    • Hehe. Thank you. (And guy banter is one of my favorite things to write…)

    •  I just can’t stop laughing at “boys and their toys”…

  • Falconfly

I bet I am going to hate every single one of these characters when they turn out to be homophobes to their firey teammate.

  • I dunno why, but Fluke is coming off as really full of himself… Like he’s the kind of person that would make it all about himself. But I really do love the character designs.

    • LadyRhapsody

Sometimes you kinda need that cocky attitude to deal with things, especially if your power stems on bad shit happening to you so you can help others. If he was more mentally weak, I doubt he’d be able to handle the constant hardships he literally has to endure for other people.

      • I think you’re onto something, LadyRhapsody. And that cocky attitude is actually something that helps bond Fluke and Spooky, even though they ultimately have different flavors of it.

  • Yukiness

Ah, so that’s what he can do. I can see many interesting things that can happen to/with Flukes character and am now very interested in his developement as well as Kyles.

As for 2D boys, don’t get me started. Besides being in love with half the cast of Bleach, I will say that visually, I like well kept hair (facial hair included), dimples, aprons, and a very Tsudere personality or a sweet disposition.

  • KiannaLeigh

So … does Fluke/Paul’s personal life have to suck for his powers to work? If yes … oh Paul can i give you hug!? Wait, Would that render your powers useless? Can’t hug? Must hug! So torn!!!

  • Plum Soda

Somehow I can’t get over how they’re chatting away like that.
I get that we need to get to know them and they are dudes and YOUNG,
but get inside that stupid building RIGHT NOW!!! °.°

Didn’t someone miss the firefighters? There they are!

Lovely page, I am absolutely stunned.
Have the most splendid week, all of you wonderful people!

  • fujoshifanatic

Mmm, yummy boys in all kinds of flavors! I can see why you like this page so much Alex. 😉 Panel four is especially chocolatey good; love Fluke’s smile! While Fluke’s power is great hero-wise, I would imagine it sucks if his personal life has to be crappy for his power to manifest properly. I am hoping this is not the case. *fingers crossed*

As for what 2-D boys get me going, while it’s evolved a little over time, it’s generally stayed in the same realm, more or less. My first 2-D crush was on Speed Racer; the combination of his huge eyes, thick shiny hair and slender frame did something to me that my four-year old brain couldn’t comprehend, but wanted to experience every weekday and Saturday morning it came on. In fact, my life-long love of Elvis Presley directly came from that crush; I saw “Jailhouse Rock” for the first time at five, and I swore it was Speed Racer come to life! :-3 Most of my 2-D crushes during that time (Mark from the old G-Force for one) had been on characters of that type, and solidified my love of the anime and comic book genre, where I could enjoy them to the fullest. 🙂

Since then I have continued to be  pretty much been drawn to that type in 2-D and in real life — slender, baby-faced guys that run the gamut in attractiveness from quirky to downright beautiful. Muscles are nice, but not too much, although I will make exceptions for gentle-faced giants (I’m looking at you, Tsunami, who reminds me of my last serious boyfriend, if you can believe it!). Bonus points if they have longish to really long hair and are shorter than average. Hm, maybe because I’m a lesbian-identified queer girl who’s just under 5’2″, I guess! ;-P

At any rate, awesome page Alex; can’t wait for more. 😀

    • Thank you, fujoshifanatic—for the kind words and the very interesting account of what you like. I believe my first crush was on Courageous Cat at the age of 4 or 5. (Although that might have been mostly about the theme song and their awesome car .)

      • fujoshifanatic

Oh my gosh, I clicked on the link and squeed because I remembered that cartoon! That was an awesome theme song; much better than Mighty Mouse’s, even though I was more into him as far as animal superheroes go. Boy, I miss those silly, innocent cartoons; they were great! Thanks for the blast from the past! 😀

  • I knew it!  His ability is to manipulate his luck, right?

  • Ryn

so his bad luck brings everyone else goodluck? yeesh, sounds like a superpower i’d get.  kinda reminds me of the spander fic ‘Twilight time’.

    • Heh.

I went searching for the story you mentioned. Is “Twilight Time” a fan fic?

      • Ryn

yup, is a spike/xander fanfic. can be found here ->

i spend a lot of time in the slashy buffy stories. spanderfiles is a great spike/xander site. I’m rereading Repossession for about the 9th time.  though that can be pretty graphic at times, violence wise. I could go on and on with recs for my favorite pairings but Spanderfiles is a great place to start. 🙂

        • Thanks for the info. 🙂 I haven’t read Fanfic for a very long time (I think the last fanfic I read was a Ranma/Ryoga one, so that should tell you something). But very cool to hear about this stuff.

        • Midwestmutt

Enjoyed the fanfic very much. Thanks for the link.

  • And now we know what Fluke does!  That… is completely awesome.  Especially with the balance of bad luck and good.  Also, he’s adorable. <3

  • b3nc0

Red Hot! CODE NAMES aren’t just for merchandizing!!!

  • Lol, I love the panel with Spooky and Red.  Spook is all dripping sarcasm (or would that be irony?) because he totally gets Fluke’s power, whereas Red is like a lost puppy dog!   Hmmm.  I’m a lil mixed on Fluke’s “confidence”.  I keep wondering what if that rubble wouldn’t have broke like he anticipated it to…  Bah, too much Domino in my head I guess, and I’m not even that fond of her.  But still beats Longshot’s “dumb luck”.  Alex, I know you already have this story planned out to a large degree (I think you do anyhow) but will some of their history be given as time goes by, possibly touching on a rough age range, how they go ttheir powers, and how they’ve become so proficient at using them?  Is there an Adult Protectors running around?  See, you make me think.  Maybe not in a conventional way, but you do make me think.  lol.

Err…what qualifies as 2D guys?  As long as they’re roughly considered “male” correct?  And we talking tv/cartoon as well as book form, right?

    • Howdy, Mykle! In answer to your questions:

      – Yes, we will get to know a lot more of their history. Some of that will come out in “bonus scenes” that take place out of the continuity of “Engaging the Enemy” that I’m planning to add to the printed books. But I’m thinking of creating other things, like maybe trading cards that reveal interesting details such as their ages, combat success and other interesting stats.

      – There are adult teams in this world, but there isn’t an adult “Protectors” group. Commander deliberately chose a unique name for her team. And there are reasons for that–which will at least be hinted at in Chapter 3. 🙂

      – Yep, TV/cartoon counts just as much as book 2D guys. That’s the benefit of the term 2D guys. It’s ecumenical.

  • Katana_X

So is his power that he can save up good karma in exchange for bad karma or something?

  • Shinashi

I was confused when he said he was locked and loaded, but now that I’ve read the comments, everything makes sense.

Fluke, your cutesy sacrifice may give Tsunami’s buffness some competition.

I really liked the way showing Fluke’s power played out, it really emerged and then dawned on me. Like, pretty much everyone else’s, haha. It’s really great.

  • “. . .and with a mere look over the shoulder…..

    Psy-Shield Activated!”

i love just how effortlessly Fluke had exercised his ability.
that kind of stuff makes me giddy.

    two things.

i want to give fluke and tsunami hugs.
(for two different reasons which i won’t mention at the moment.)

and kyle’s depiction up there is giving me a John Cena vibe that’s totally setting a blaze in my pants.

  • SymphonicPyro

So to be clear his power is that he gets bad luck and it counter-balances with good luck towards the people he saves?  That’s some major balance of the cosmos thing going on. Also, I got this to work Alex thanks for the help 😀

  • Captain_LeBubbles

But the lamp post! Will no one think of the poor lamp post and its noble sacrifice?

    • Alas, you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few lampposts.

  • QuantumKid

“Locked and loaded”………. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

  • Im super confused.Whats his power?!?!

    • Luck.  If a disaster happens to him it charges up his ability to alter probability, saving people from injury. A bit like Scarlet Witch’s hex power.  Or something like that.  lol!

  • all I can imagine is what would happen if the Fluke died as a result of the building falling on him? Would that make all of the others in the building extremely lucky and get out without any sort of injury… Not saying I don’t like Luke’s powers but one has to wonder about these kinds of things.

If any of the group were to somehow get killed or die I would say fluke has the highest chance of that happening.

  • I had a feeling his ability was porbability control. That or he could turn into a blood fluke which is just…ew. So it’s kinda like Mahou Shojo Madoka (an anime that preety much revolves around the concept of balancing wishes, or fortune and grief, or misfortune to keep the universe in order). You can’t have somthing good happen without somthing bad happening to balance it out and vice-versa? Otherwise the universe gets thrown all out of whack and you wake up with an egg beater for a hand (very obsucre reference). I guess Fluke is used to having bad things happen to him, hints the helmet. That must suck. But does the opposite hold true? Can he make something bad happen to some one and in turn give himself more “good luck”? That has some serious potential for fun!

    • b3nc0

There was also a manga whose ‘hero’ was a killer for hire with the ability to ‘pump’ the luck out of his target by a mere skin touch, then the death seems accidental, as it /is/ accidental…
He’s actually stocking the luck for his sick daughter *Aaaaaaw*

Edit: the manga was called “Luck Stealer”, too simple for me to remember I guess m(__)m

      • Again, y’all are turning me on to stuff I haven’t heard of before. That anime sounds like fun. I’ll have to check it out. 🙂

And you’re right—that is the reason Fluke has a helmet. 🙂

  • Mink Dream

What Fluke needs is one very bitchy girlfriend that he would deperately love. That would charge him up for like, forever 😉

  • If I was crushed in a Tsunami/Annihilator sandwich, I’d die happy with a big smile on my face.  😀

  • I wish I had extra money to donate. Then we could have a page on Wednesday!

I just completely reread the Prologue. I kind of miss Annihilator 🙁

Oh well, let’s see the team save the day, I wonder when/if they will learn Kyle’s REDHOT secret. haha

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

Everyone’s power? What power does the woman have? Did I miss it?

    • She has telepathy.

Don’t know what Fluke has though, can’t really figure it out. Something to do with Karma maybe :I

      • Fluke trades his bad luck into good luck for others… explaing why his car crashing becomes an important tool against accident if they go in th buiding

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

    Ok, Telepathy. Nevermind. XD

    • LadyRhapsody

I just realized… If her power is telepathy… Does she already know about Kyle being gay?
And, if that IS the case, and she doesn’t seem to be acting any differently towards him, does that mean she’ll be the buffer between the guys if they don’t take kindly towards Kyle “coming out”? O.o

Maybe I’m just thinking too hard. x.x

  • SolrSurfr3

So his super power is, like, luck or karma. That’s actually really cool! 😀 How did you come up with that?

  • Jac

    Fluke, you charmer. <3

  • D. Garrett

fluke is such a cutie. esp in panel 4. and he just looks smooth in panel 5. nice.

  • Tim

Fluke’s adoreable :), and got off with a pretty neat power too.

  • camolot the creator

He possesses one of my two dream powers!
