  • Elrohir

    Awesome

    • Congrats Elrohir!!!

      • Elrohir

Thank you both! My very first actually…but I suspect that the rest of the pack were just being kind. 🙂

        • EyeDontNo

          Your virgin virgin? Awesome!

          • Elrohir

Indeed it was! And I LIKE that term! 🙂
As a pure novice (not being the veteran virgin hunter – aka VVH that Sapfo, Danish, Stick, Doki, AJ, Chris et. al. are) I was quite surprised.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Way to go!!

  • Sapfo

    People … And me

  • Well I wonder if Amanda is getting something to eat for Spooky

    • EyeDontNo

It would be the best way to break the ice.

    • Saxon_Brenton

That was my first thought too.

    • Elrohir

I wonder, what IS the approved “Welcome back from Hell” candy bar?

      • Snickers of course!

        • Elrohir

          Always satisfies! 🙂

        • stickfigurefairytales

I was going to say that, but then I thought it might be more appropriate while stuck in hell, with that older ad campaign: “Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a Snickers.”

      • EyeDontNo

Looks more like the sandwich machine. I’m thinking egg salad on wheat bread.

        • PB&J on white. Well that’s what I would want 🙂

        • Elrohir

It is AMAZING the detail that exists in these panels. I was thinking you can almost make out what’s IN the vending machines. The upper row I was thinking more bags of chips or cookies and sandwiches in the middle. But some of the bottom row look narrow enough to be candy bars.

        • Wayne Lunkwitz

Egg salad on wheat???? he would think he never left Hell LOL

          • EyeDontNo

            Think about it this way…
From what we saw in Laampros’ land, and I freely admit that the terrain may be directly correlated to the spot the bridge was formed (to be argued at a different time), plant life and lower life forms are sparse in Demon places. Eggs would be scarce and so would flour for bread. So an egg salad sandwich would be outside Demons’ experiences.
And animal life? Would you trust any meat you eat in Demon land to have come from something that didn’t think before it was used to feed you?
And this without the possibility of using your thoughts to tempt you into believing the food is ‘normal’. Offering Spooky food that didn’t need to be killed first, and that is unlikely to be known to Demons seems entirely logical.

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

Hmm…..that sounds a bit “off” for some reason…..with the exception that chocolate doesn’t hold up well in a perpetually HOT place. I was thinking more along the lines of her gently offering the food with thought voice saying “Please eat this, I won’t hurt you….you’re safe now.” Any one of those or all three.

      • Google reverse image search tells me that your avatar is F’lessan from Perm.

My eyes tell me that your avatar is really really cute.

        TRiG.

        • Elrohir

You sir are pretty amazing. I confess, I read my first Pern story in Analog magazine. Which was later joined to two other stories and became “Dragonflight”. I became addicted to Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series; reading them as fast as they were published. I always loved Robin Wood’s depictions of the characters of Pern and own a few prints and one original piece of art of hers (purchased at a Boskone convention). F’lessan struck me as a bit of an imp and really, really cute.
And thank you for that walk down memory lane.

          • I’ve read very little Pern. I read one or two of the books in my early teens, and a rather excellent short story (“Runner of Pern”, published in Legends) more recently. Perhaps I should read more, though I do admit that the infamous bit about gay men and tent pegs puts me off a little.

            TRiG.

          • Elrohir

I actually had to go look up what you were referring to as I had never heard it. When I was first reading the Pern books I just thought it was very cool that the riders would have sex with each other during the mating flights regardless of partner gender. Seemed a pretty interesting society to me. I’d have to say the early books are still my favorites. Especially the Harper Hall series.
At the moment though I’m hip deep in re-reading Mercedes Lackey’s “Herald Mage Vanyel” trilogy.

          • His story makes me cry every time!

          • Elrohir

I am with you there milady, I am with you there…

    • Saxon_Brenton

Thoughts: Back on page 3 ‘the boy’ was described being found stark naked and carrying the demon head three hours previously. The authorities have obviously taken the step of taking the demon head away. I’d be very surprised I they hadn’t given him at least some clothing. But what do the rest of you think of the hypothesis that they haven’t given him anything to eat and Amanda is sensing his hunger from a distance and is taking the obvious trust building measure?

      • Well they may have tried to give him food, but he may not have taken it, because of the lack of trust. He might be more willing to take it from someone closer in age to himself.

        • EyeDontNo

That plus he just spent a year in a place that ‘normal society’ accepted the use of deception on a regular basis; He may not fully realize that he is back on Earth yet.

          • True. They might not have had “children” in hell. So that might give him a clue when Amanda comes in.

          • Elrohir

Plus, eating food in Hell…isn’t that what got Persephone stuck with the whole having to return to Hell thing? Taking food (pomegranate seeds) from Hades?

          • Saxon_Brenton

An excellent point. Eating food in Hell is almost as risky as eating food in Faerie.

          • SofiaT

*annoying knowitall makes an appearance because she can’t help herself*

Hades was not the equivalent of Hell, it was just the world of the dead. That would be Tartarus. (Sorry, correcting people when it comes to greek mythology is almost a compulsion…without the “almost”.)

But valid point. I’d be afraid to eat anything in Hell too. What if they gave you rice and it was really maggots like in Lost Boys? O.o

          • Elrohir

Nonsense good lady. Education NEVER goes amiss. How else is one to learn except by correction! 🙂
Nice image on the “Lost Boys”. That scene always creeped me out. Really liked the movie though. Some GREAT lines:
“She’s a vampire Michael! And don’t tell me that doesn’t make her a bad person!”

          • stickfigurefairytales

            (Slimy but satisfying.)

          • SofiaT

I’m very un-Hakuna-Matata when it comes to my food 😀

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Heh, me too.

          • Θα σας πάρει σε θεραπεία αμέσως.

          • SofiaT

Ummmm, would you like to translate that back to English for me?

Not sure what you’re trying to say there. XD

          • Darn Google… I suspected it was going to fudge up. I think I attempted something simple like, “There is therapy for that.” (the compulsion). I shudder to think what it really says.

          • SofiaT

            LOL.

Hint: These are not compatible languages, neither in grammar nor syntax. You can’t translate one to the other word-for-word. 😛

…as for the compulsion, I fear it’s without cure.

          • Elrohir

Reminds me of my first German professor. I had made some remark (really dumb) about how a phrase made no sense (translated word for word) and he replied:
“And English is so logical? Tell me, how exactly do you run back before you run forth?”
Which finally began to convince me.
As for the compulsion, knowledge is usually a good thing. For my part correction is always welcome. So “Thank you”. 🙂

          • Elrohir

Now I feel better. When I put your text back through Google Translate it came out as:
            “You get treated immediately.”
And I was wondering what you meant by it. 🙂

          • Klaus

You mean they don’t in the real world?

      • Elrohir

I think it’s a sound theory. I was wondering about it a bit myself. But I couldn’t decide if they haven’t given him anything, or if he hasn’t been willing to take anything from them. If we consider the suggestion that he’s not sure he’s free from hell yet, maybe he’s unwilling to trust anything they would feed him.
It seems like, if they were trying to get a teenage boy to “open up”, feeding him might be one way to do it. Teenage boy metabolisms are notoriously high. So I’m thinking they tried and he didn’t go for it.
I like the idea that Amanda has sensed his hunger though. I’m kind of hoping for a smack down line where Detective Doofus say’s something to Amanda like, “He won’t take it, we’ve tried.” and then Spooky does take it and says “Thanks”. Because Amanda sensed the right food to offer.
        Liking the concept.

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

Very sound theory,I might add that at least in lieu of “clothing” maybe a blanket to wrap in?

    • Becky

She might also prefer to hang back and come in alone, rather than as a part of the big pack of strangers, so as to appear less threatening.

  • SofiaT

    There’s never a bad time for a Kit-Kat.

    • Maria White

Break me a piece of that Spooky bar!

Ahh…. commercials. I still remember the lines to sockem boppers.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

I’m partial to Reese’s peanutbutter cups , but chocolate in any for is always good:)

  • Thanks Alex, Veronica and Adam. Always a special treat.

  • Elrohir

As ever, Chris is a good reminder of priorities.
I am truly astonished by the level of detail in this page. Down to the level that one almost feels one could read the monitor in panel 4. The reality it brings. Really brilliant.
Alex, Adam and Veronica, thank you indeed for another wonderful addition to the story line.

  • Saxon_Brenton

On the naming of guest appearances. The crowd scenes of course allow for lots of places to put in the paid cameos, with places for faces in foreground, middleground and – considering the amount of detail that gets put into the art – even in the background. So, while I can’t make any guesses on Harold or Steven, but I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be my image-sake character in panel one: the guy in the white t-shirt and brown hair sitting immediately in front of where Amanda is standing.

Do we have Harold or Steven here to exercise their gloating privileges?

    • Elrohir

Hmm…well, you would probably recognize your own character best. 🙂
But based on the level of detail in the faces, I was going for:
      1. The Police officer in profile at the top left front of panel 1.
      2. The dark haired young man at the bottom right front of panel 1.
      3. The man sitting in front of the desk in the office in panel 3.
But I’m basing that simply on those being the most detailed faces of the non-current characters in the panels. However, in addition to the man you pointed out, 3 other characters “popped” at me; all in panel 1.
      a. The blonde cop wearing glasses and holding the coffee cup just behind Amanda.
      b. The Detective with the mustache in the center of the panel sitting on the desk and speaking on the phone.
      c. The dark haired man in the white shirt and loosened tie just at the right edge of the panel in the center.
But I’m staying by my first 3 choices for the Kickstarters.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Yep, I agree with your reasoning 100%, which is why I thought I’d give the heads-up when I realized that the one character I could reasonably identify wasn’t in an otherwise to-be-expected location. In fact, if we’re suspecting the artists of being sneaky, then Klaus makes a good point above for the man in the bottom left of panel 1 as well.

        • Elrohir

Sneaky? Downright DEVIOUS at times! Umm…wait…that was out loud wasn’t it? Inside voice…must remember to use the inside voice…
Yeah, your post made me rethink it, because identifying one of the background characters would give us an idea of what sort of foreground, mid-ground, background placement and detail of the Kickstarter appearances. Klaus makes some excellent points too. So many choices…I guess I’m going to have to sleep on it and see if either of your other famous cohorts speaks up. 🙂

    • Elrohir

Whoa! It appears that I was “less wrong than usual” in this case. Two of my choices (numbers 1 and 3) have been confirmed. So now it remains to see if I can pull a hat trick with Harold being choice number 2. Has Alex or anybody confirmed which character is Harold yet?

  • Klaus

There are four faces that obviously stand out: in three of the corners of the first panel, and in the center of the third panel. So my guess would be that these are the paid apperances, if Saxon had not told us that it is it not so.

  • Kate G

Hello, sorry I’ve been away. My grams isn’t doing so well. The doctors told us yesterday she is dying (she was rushed to the ER as her sodium went dangerously low on Saturday and it’s sort of stayed there); she may turn around, but we should say our good-byes. I haven’t been not doing so well since she started getting sick so I’ve been kind of lurking around, not commenting. (Excuse me if I lurk a little more. I know I’m usually a chatter, but I’m not feeling very chatty.)

The side story is different. It’s definitely not where you would expect Amanda to have come from…or we would first meet Spooky! I’m not sure where the three guest appearances are, but they sure are very lucky ducks!

    • Sorry about your Grams. It’s always hard to lose grandparents.

    • Klaus

I wish I could say something to cheer you up, but of course there is nothing to say. It is sad. But at least there is still hope.

    • vessto

I send you my biggest hopes and wishes for her!!!

    • b3nc0

edit: I wrote a whole letter, but all I wanted to convey was
      (づ ◠︵◠)づ

    • Niggle

Sorry about your grams. I lost my grandmother in 2003. It’s hard and going to hospitals is exhausting, but you’ll get through it. ~lots of hugs~

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

That happened to my Mom after she went on dialysis (CAPD administered at home) Doctor ordered me to give her condensed broth , full strength , not watered down, It did the trick.

    • *hugs* Sorry to hear about your grams! ;_;

    • stickfigurefairytales

I’m so sorry to hear that. *hugs* No worries about whether you feel up to commenting. Just know that we care about you.

    • You’re very much in my thoughts, Kate. I hope things do turn around for your grams and I’m sending you my biggest hugs.

      • Kate G

Thanks, we went in to say what we wanted to say and it was really hard. Coming back to see all of the messages was really nice and comforting. She really isn’t who she was when I was a kid and even before her stroke anymore, so in a way I want her to be at peace, but in a lot of ways I still want her to be here and be alive because she’s still my grammy and I don’t want to lose her (that sounds so mean because she’s in pain.) It’s very hard for me.

  • Feverfew_M

Another one of Amanda’s superpowers — knowing when chocolate is needed. Very useful!
Love the bonus-comic so far! <3
And is that Steven K. in the third panel? 🙂

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

      haha, that’s funny. 😀

    • Klaus

Do you mean there are times when chocolate is not needed?

      • Feverfew_M

Ha, of course not! But look, no one else there seems to know. It’s her superpower. And ours, obviously. 😀

    • DC

That does look a lot like Steven K.

      • Steven K.

I wish I was as cute as your avatar/thumbnail pic.

        • DC

          Ha! So do I 🙂

  • xLizardx

I bet she buys some food and gives it to Spooky. 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

      I think you’re right!

  • b3nc0

I thought the guests would appear in a wall of most-wanted-criminals posters…

    • Elrohir

      Hmm…indicating it’s a crime to support TYP? 🙂
      Just kidding.

  • Niggle

I’ve been really out of it in terms of commenting and reading comments for a while, but at least the past…three weeks I’ve had an excuse. But anyway, I’ve been enjoying the bonus comic and congrats to the Destined For Greatness backers!

  • TwilightDreamer

    Poor Spooky 🙁
Hmm…what’s going to happen whilst the daughter isn’t there…*shrugs*…thinking out loud…

  • bronakopdin

Oh really!? Was it an extra for donating a certain amount to the kickstarter? such a great idea!

and here I hoped we’d see Spooky this page already, you’re such a tease, Alex xD

good question at Amanda though… maybe in fact she’s only playing the tough part at the moment and in fact feels disturbed by the head and needs a moment to calm down or sth… but alone of course…

can be something else entirely either ^^

though after seeing THAT I doubt she really wants to eat something xD

    • If you go look at Alex’ link, you can see that everyone who donated $750 or above will be drawn into the comic in a page/scene of Alex’ choice.
It can be as a background character, a villain or a hero. The more paid, the more I think the chance of a scene. Maybe even getting to say a line in the comic 🙂

  • Pikinanou

Larger issues, indeed! The boy came back with a demon head :O

  • Johndar

That first panel is Gorgeous. Really get the feeling of a busy police station.

  • Mary Kelleher

    D’aaaw, she’s getting Spooky a cookie.

    Headcannon.

    • bergulme .

I don’t think that will stay headcanon for long as this was my thought as well. Classical “Good Cop” technique. Also Alex gave you a +1…
Maybe she already knows what his favorite candy is.

  • I think the demons already got him to open up some.

  • Steven K.

Wow – I hope this doesn’t mean I’ve been arrested! And I’ve been trying so hard to NOT get into any trouble or controversy with anything here lately. Hopefully I’ve just been brought in for questioning or my expert advice on something. (And thanks to y’all for not making me look horrible though – with no profiles showing off my extra-large schnozola – at least I don’t have to suffer that kind of punishment.)

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Hmmm, I don’t know Steven. You look a little bit worried there. 😛

      • Steven K.

I know! And I am! I’m worried that I look so worried. Of course that is a bit of very good realistic depiction, cuz I think that in reality I do look worried about something or another most of the time, though usually with good reason. But I’ve never broken any laws (unless the MI sodomy laws are still on the books) – I’ve never even been drunk or smoked MJ, and am probably (aside from the sexuality issue), probably one of the most “straight”-laced (i.e., living an exceedingly boring life) guys around. I am an expert on monsters though – all manner of creatures, actually, real and imagined.

    • stickfigurefairytales

At this point in our investigation you are merely a person of interest, Steven.

    • I’m glad you like it, Steven. Thank you so much for your extraordinary backing! 🙂

    • Saxon_Brenton

And thanks to y’all for not making me look horrible though – with no profiles showing off my extra-large schnozola

I hear you, Steven. While it’s clear from the art that I have a receding hairline, they were kind enough to handwave away the actual bald spot that is such an offense to my vanity. Warm fuzzies!

      • Saxon_Brenton

And it seems I got it wrong with the identifcation of the characters. Update above.

  • b3nc0

Detective Tutt’s speach in panel 1 made me think: What if the kid is really Chinese or Cambodian or something thus doesn’t speak ’cause he doesn’t get a clue what everyone is saying?
And from the last panel, hope Lt-col Charlebois can get custody of this most-important witness in a country-threat busyness before social service arrives!

    • davefragments

I know too many people who’s only contact with anyone from the Far East is when they eat gourmet Moo Goo Gai Pan and General Tso’s Chicken at a restaurant. Egg Rolls are the first exotic food they ever ate. And they think there are two oriental soups — Wonton and Pho.

They wouldn’t know a Korean person from a Japanese person from a Thai Person from a Vietnamese Person from a Cambodian or a Malaysian. They look at the name “Higashi” and think China but never Hawaii. And as for Burma or Bhutan or any other country in the far east, well they just have no clue. Also, they don’t know there is a difference between Taiwan and Mainland China.

Yes, those people exist. So why wouldn’t they expect the kid knew English? Doesn’t everyone know English?

they see a naked kid holding a severed demon’s head like he was Perseus confronting the Kraken and see only his pee-pee. I believe that is the mental level of the male detective in this series of pages when it comes to “foreigners” . . .

I’m such a sad cynic today.

  • stickfigurefairytales

This isn’t an issue with Steven K. and Saxon, but I realized that I automatically assume that people’s guest appearances will look just like their Disqus icons, which aren’t necessarily always actual pictures of them. So AJ would appear as a caped stick figure, and Niggle would be a bunch of flowers. Jakk would be a chihuahua.

…I actually really want all of this to happen now.

    • Probably a good thing I didn’t go for that option on the Kickstarter then. That would have really confused things. 🙂

    • Elrohir

You know though…I bet our TYP crew could make that work though.

  • Two of my three guesses were correct! ^_^ So I wonder who the third one is?

I would just like to agree with a lot of people here who are thinking that Amanda is getting the snack for Spooky. It kind of makes one wonder just what he had to eat to survive while in hell. 0.0 It could not have been pleasant.

The details on these Bonus Comic pages are absolutely amazing. You are doing an amazing job Adam and Veronica!! I am taken aback by how well you guys are presenting these pages! I know I personally feel like I am actually in a busy police station. You guys are astounding!

  • SofiaT

Ha! There’s a left-handed person depicted on the page!

I know it’s a silly thing to be happy about, but in a world made for right-handed people (try sitting an exam in one of those tiny desk-chair things in the amphitheater that have the miniscule desk designed for right-hand writing. And don’t even get me started on scissors or milk pots!), I get my pleasures (and evil laughter) anywhere I can 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

Yeah left-handed people! *high-fives you with left hand*

  • Saxon_Brenton

Guest appearance update and correction. Sorry folks, maxmimum mea culpa. I have within the past ten minutes received an email from Alex, politely pointing out that I was wrong in my identification of who my image-sake character is supposed to be. It is supposed be the uniformed cop of the left hand side of panel one, seen in profile and with the walky-talky on his shoulder. And cross-referencing the art with the reference picture I supplied, yes, that’s me and he even has the same upturned quirk to his lips.

I’m embarassed. The only possible excuse I have is that people tend to be more familiar with the faces of those around them than their own, and the guy in the white t-shirt reminded me of my dad, who I strongly resemble, including to the ‘high Brenton forehead’ that comes from his side of the family and turns up even in the men who aren’t going bald.

Of course this completely throws into doubt my previous comments about guest appearances possibly being in the middleground or even background. Okay, I’ll stop flagellating myself in public now.

    • Poppyjaz

it’s funny, i thought ‘your’ cameo, had to be one of the three because of that quirk in the lips..heehee.. it’s not a detail that someone would necessarily do otherwise..hehe How exciting for you though. 😀

    • davefragments

I started going to the Pittsburgh Public Theater back in the 2002 and 2003 season. One of the things I noticed was that most of the stage actors that came from the East kept showing up as extras in LAW AND ORDER (the original and then the subsequent spin-offs). I think the series fed (as in food) most of the Broadway actors and actresses who wanted a Broadway career and found it in bit parts and appearances all through that series.

So these guest appearances are in a “grand” tradition of NYC Broadway and the NYC based TV series.

  • Holly

I can’t believe i missed camping last night. Though I was ill.

I wonder what Spooky will look like when we finally land eyes on him. Is he just blank faced, is he petrified, catatonic? Are his clothes torn? The detective says he doesn’t seem to be harmed physically.

OH I am so excited for Saturday!

    • Klaus

He was naked when found. He must be dressed now. If he put up such resistance that they gave up on getting him covered somehow, they would have mentioned it.

    • *hugs Holly* Are you feeling better sweety?

      • Holly

YES! But still feeling a little weird. I’ll rally ^_^

    • b3nc0

And loooong hair, don’t forget year-without-a-hairdresser/barber long hair!

  • ReineVictoria

My prediction: Amana takes one look at Spooky and takes off to be sick, much surprising the detective.
    Mum: “That bad, hey?”
Amanda: “All those demons! And what they did!”

  • Xalun K

Really looking forward to meeting young Spooky. XD

In other news, I’ve just been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I knew my pain wasn’t all in my head.

    • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

Ugh, so sorry to hear about your arthritis. I feel very thankful mine isn’t rheumatoid, because I remember how much pain my cousin was in with his before he managed to get the pain and stuff under control.

      • Xalun K

Thank you so much, I appreciate that. It’s so good to know that all this pain has a *reason* behind it, even if it’s a terrible one.

        • Something similar happened to a colleague of mine years ago. He was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder that has no cure and not much in the way of supportive treatments — but it was a massive boost to his morale to have an explanation for the chronic pain after two years of “no idea” from the doctors, and as a result knowing what treatments offered at least some hope of keeping it under control.

        • Sharon Kerr-Bullian

I’m not really sure how useful it might be to you, since I don’t have rheumatoid arthritis, but I’ve been getting good results with topical aspirin-based pain relieving creams and gels. I was using something called Sports Creme (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Sportscreme-Deep-Penetrating-Relieving-Rub-3/dp/B000RL61JQ), but recently tried Walmart’s TopCare Analgesic Creme Rub too. Both work well for me. Obviously, you should ask a doctor before trying it yourself, but it’s been magic for me. It takes my daily pain level from around a 7 on a scale of 1-10 (1 being good, 10 being bad) to about a 3 or 4.

I’ve had good results with glucosamine supplements too, as have all of my pets. Again, I’m not sure how well it will help, but it might be worth looking into?

    • Kyletin

Congratulations, for at least having a fairly definite answer. I know that sounds like a weird thing to say, but not having the diagnosis would have driven me insane. I’m a bit of a hypochondriac, so it is hard to say, though. ;D good luck taking your life by the reins!

    • Valja

At least it’s a good thing you’ve had it diagnosed. Knowing the type of disease it is, diagnosing it at its initial stages means a lot, you can fight it with much better effects to have positive outcomes – and most of all, now you’ll know what to do to lessen the pain, cause you know what you’re facing against.
Ugh, I described it as if it were some sort of demon right out of Laampros’ realm… I’m sorry, I’m not very proficient in english…

  • Lady_Hiroko

If I wasn’t so broke……*whines* Anyway a curious chapter. Awesome work as usual. And congrats to the backers. I’d say more but my cell prevents me.

  • Yukiness

Smart girl. Snack foods get you friends. I’m sure there’s a huge lack of Doritos in the neither realms.

    • timemonkey

Roseanne: “There’s no chocolate in hell, that’s why it’s Hell!”

  • KryX

Just a guess. Maybe Amanda’s blocking an exit. If this kids survived through hell, he might have some amazing abilities when it comes to bolting if he wants to. Joining his escape would be a good way of showing him you’re on his side.
    Also,
Love all the people in this page. The perspective in the first panel is great.

  • ivvylesla

God damn, Spooky has been through some serious shit.

  • It’s a good page for adding to the storyline, but of course what really strikes me is that opening panel. It’s such a vivid, *real* picture, making it very clear that we’re in a working police station and not some specialist unit. There’s amazing detail in it, down to the notices on the glassed in noticeboard. The level of detail in it reminds of the work of the British cartoonist Giles — you could spend a lot of time looking at all the things going on in the background.

    • There are a lot of things that impress me about Adam’s linework, but one of the great pleasures of working with him for me is the detail and realism he puts into the “extras” in the background. That’s something that’s very important to me—that every person on the page feel like they have their own lives and aren’t just filler—and Adam not only nails that, but takes it to a whole new level. Everyone feels like they have their own story and point of view and it’s just great.

Obviously that kind of detail takes a ton of time to draw (and color), so I’ve got to be careful how often I ask for that, but I love his work with crowd scenes so much, I’m tempted to find excuses to work more crowds in. 😉

      • I was thinking looking at it that it simply wouldn’t be feasible to do that level of detail every time, especially on the twice-weekly schedule currently supported by the donation level, but that I really appreciate getting to see it once in a while.

  • Heh

Comander is such a nice character, so it’s really good to see her apearing again so soon! The fact that her mother works for pentagon made it easier for me to understand why she could form a team with the ‘ rejects’ from the young superhero program that kyle and everyone else ( except spooky ) failed. If THAT does not open a few doors up, things sure are harder than it looks.

She sure knows how to talk to someone too, if that snack it’s really for spooky. He must have been really upset with all the interrogatory until now, after all He just saw HELL. And people can’t stop asking how the experience was. Come on. Bring the chocolate on, then we’ll talk.

    I would listen to her,
    just saying.

    • Lindsey Amethyst Hampton

That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking: Commander’s getting a snack for Spooky, because he probably needs some calories and the nice gesture from someone on his metaphorical level, physically about the same size, about the same age and level of social power, it would definitely endear him to her, I think.

  • Valja

It is fortunate that they’re brought Amanda with them… This way, the “mysterious boy” won’t have to open his mouth immediately 🙂 Telepathy, psychometry and similars are powers I’ve always considered among the most interesting, whenever I’ve had the usual “which super power would you like to have” discussion (that is, quite often since I’m a huge fantasy/scifi fan). Being bulletproof, conjuring up fire and other elements, flying and the like are all awesome and suggestive, but reading minds/the past of objects, even if it wouldn’t be as “visually entertaining”, would make me feel very useful to other people. Ahah, to think that I’m not even studying psychology nor similar subjects… ^^”
By the way, the first panel is absolutely great! The point of view, the “foreshortening” (is the term correct?) between the two heads, the entire full room… Just wow!

  • Jac

Come onnnnn I want to see him already so I can start crying!

    I mean, good page! Sorry.

  • AlexandraSwiss

Dang. Props to Adam and Veronica for such a detailed page. I mean, they’re always awesome, y’all and the pages, but that’s a pretty busy precinct.

    *bows*

  • blkwhtrbbt

is that….. is that girl the commander?

    • Klaus

Yes. He mother calls her “Amanda” on page 2.

    • Klaus

Just above the donation bar, there is a block of adds. Just above that, there is a list of characters featured on the page. Commander has been on every page of the bonus comic so far.

  • Klaus

Agreed. Clicking on any page while holding down shift will take you to one of the last pages. From there it is 2 or 3 clicks (usually) to the newest page.

I usually change the page number in the address bar. But having one URL you can bookmark would be so much easier.

    • Yep, this is a feature folks have asked for on and off for some time, but as mentioned in the FAQ, due to limits in the software, it’s unfortunately not one I can provide. At least, not without losing equally important functionality elsewhere.

(That is, while I can’t set up a specific “latest page” link to bookmark, I could potentially set-up the home page to show the latest page, but for many reasons, I greatly prefer that to be the first page of Artifice, which is what that is showing now. And if shift-right-arrow doesn’t take you to the most current page immediately (which it should), then that likely means you’re using a browser like Safari that has a very aggressive caching process, which means you’d likely have to refresh that home page a few times anyway to see the latest page.)

I have brought up the feature request of having that boomarkable link with the developer before and I will try again. But this functionality is not likely to appear any time soon. I apologize for the inconvenience. Hopefully one of the solutions that is recommended in the FAQ will work for you both.

      • Klaus

I just tried shift right arrow in both Firefox and the Microsoft browser. Both goes to page 3.

        • Interesting. I use Chrome and that doesn’t happen.

          • b3nc0

More interesting, with Firefox, from different pages, went twice page 3, once page 4 & once this page ¦¦°.9

      • Okay another solution for the list. I take the current page URL and then replace the page # (at the end) with the next # and save it in the bar at the top of my browser for the week… I rename it B5 (for page 5), then anytime during the week (or 3 days if we’re lucky to have a Weds page), I just click on that current page ‘B5’. I just retire the previous one to a Yaoi911 file with the other bookmarks (although it is just as easy to use Alex’s archives). Tonight I’ll just create a URL that is the URL for page #6 (B6) and saved that URL to the bar. After tonight’s new page is up, I’ll retire 5 to the file… and so on. It’s worked well for me so far. Good luck.

I have to say I do understand why Alex chooses HOME to take you to the start. I’ve been to so many new comics where I can’t find out where to begin. 🙂

  • mel

    I get it. Spartakooks.

  • Sapfo

I been looking att this page for days. I know some have already mentioned the details, and I agree. This page is to good to be true.
There is life on this page. People move, work. This is a working place that could be real.
But I do ask you Alex. What is behind door number one? Do we really want to open it?
And please, let someone have given Spooky boy something to wear. Like a cool looking coat.

    • Elrohir

I have to agree with you Sapfo. the level of detail is just amazing. And I find more things all the time. Adam’s detail work is just astonishing. And so many little things that give it a reality that you don’t even notice are feeding your brain the message that this is a real place. Just in Panel 1 for instance:
      1. The door of the station you can read the words (I think) 11th Precinct in reverse in the upper half glass window.
      2. The table in the waiting area with the thumbed through too many times magazines.
      3. the distance detail in the glassed in notice boards, the plaques in the far office wall where Stephen K is a “person of interest”, the PD on the back of the jacket of the officer escorting the guy in cuffs, the badge of the officer in the mustache on the phone where you can almost see the photo image in the corner.
All examples of things that tell your brain it’s real, because with just a little more focus you could read it.
And from panel to panel the consistency is so good that you could create a floor plan of the station from the images. **Do you Adam? Create a floor plan for real or in your head before you begin?**
In fact the detail of Adam and Veronica’s work kept me from looking like an bigger fool than usual. I was thinking there was an inconsistency in that the dialogue from Det. Tutt said that they were headed to the 2nd interview room (the ones with the wire windows…nice detail touch there too) on the right. But because Panel 3 and Panel 4 are placed side by side my head first saw Panel 4 as if we were still looking past Stephen being interviewed (and the detail of Stephens 5 o’clock shadow and the spreadsheet on the terminal that you can almost read) and I thought, “but that’s on the left of the hall”. But then I looked and Adam and Veronica provided me with so much detail (for example what appears to be an encased fire extinguisher, by size and shape, to the left of the interview room door instead of the divided glassed in notice board that they had walked past in panel 3) that I realized that the room is on the right, past the office in panel 3. So nobody here will ever know that I almost stepped on my…well…said that the dialogue didn’t match the action…oh…wait…you do now.
And Veronica, the coloring, especially taking the time that all the people have different skin tones and consistency in the light sources and shadowing. All tells my head that we could be looking at still captures from video footage.
To Sapfo’s last question, I’m still holding out for the basic decency scenario where the found “the kid” some over sized clothes in the station and wrapped a blanket over his shoulders as well. I know that if *I* found a naked teenager walking about with a demon head *I* would make the assumption of physical/mental trauma and getting said supposed victim warm and dry to avoid worse effects from shock and such would be a priority for me. As well as hydration (though perhaps he hasn’t trusted them enough to drink or eat anything they’ve given him since he may not yet be certain that this isn’t just another demonic hallucination). So that’s what I’m hoping for when we finally walk through the door (and I’m being very patient waiting because I know as many have observed that while we’re waiting days between panels in the final book this will pass more quickly…so it only SEEMS like eternity is passing…well…since we are bouncing between dimensions perhaps eternity IS passing…I mean really…okay..not).
And repeating myself one more time in the hopes that it will make it true, I’m still holding out for BriE to be the demon who snatched Spooky to Hell and that the head was some “Spooky Payback” on the way out using the self-same demon who snatched him to open the gateway back to earth while the barriers were thinned by Kyle’s 12th birthday “lava-gasm” (as Chris calls it).
      I know that this level of work can’t be in every page at a two a week pace. But I am so very, very glad that the Alex/Adam/Veronica TYP team came together. Really, really class job folks. As my Scottish friends say;
      PURE DEAD BRILLIANT
**Apparently making a quick response to one of Sapfo’s posts potentially unlocks torrents of observations and ramblings. Many thanks to anybody who made it through another little book of mine. Comments and criticisms always welcome.**

      • Klaus

My guess is that Spooky made use of his own birthday to get back, however he managed to keep track. He was in hell “for a full year”.

        • Elrohir

I like that theory Klaus. Birthday’s have power. That could work. I still want the payback story to be true though.

          • Klaus

In Kyle’s case the birthday was not enough by itself. It may well have been so for Spooky also.

      • Aw, thanks for all the kind words on the page, Elrohir! 🙂

To answer your question, I usually have at least a rough sketch of a floor plan of any location that we’ll be spending some time in. It’s often tweaked and modified as the page is being drawn, but there’s usually at least a loose map for me to refer to.

With locations that will be recurring or that seem especially complicated, I’ll try to work up more detailed drawings at multiple angles so I can always refer back to them (and forward them to colorists, editors, etc. if they need ’em).

Having said all that, though, you’re trying too hard to give me some clever credit on the right/left thing, though! Fact is, I did intend for it to be read as the door on the left, further down the hall than we can clearly see in panels 1, 2, or 3.

I guess I got so distracted with all these folks in the station that I mixed up my right and my left! I think a quick dialogue fix is pending to address this.

Kudos to your eagle eyes for catching this! 😀

        • Thanks Adam. A peek at the process behind the curtain is always a cool thing. Much appreciated.

  • Klaus

Good night and happy camping. See you tomorrow.

  • Simba

Camping?? 😀 I have corn on the cob today to share.

    • I am sorry, but I have to pass on the corn. I have brownies though if you want one?

      • Heh

Did someone said corn on the cob, brownies and camping? I might even get out of my usual stealth mode in this one, if this is on the table.

I have apples here too, for my camping companions.
        Bring this page on

  • b3nc0

No camping tonight, got a fever, throat pain, my head is gonna explode (for thz third time today!!!) but here ara the products of my last acts of heroism today: https://plus.google.com/photos?pid=5995930417243537090&oid=114661535605160092496

    • Feel better!!!

      And lovely picture!!

    • Elrohir

It is a lovely sunset, and do feel better!

    • Feel better!

  • Heh

Spooky and Kyle. Spooky and Commander. Spooky and fluke. Lets see how long this comic will take me to just ship spooky with EVERYONE. My mind is at war.

Not my fault that he goes with anything, tho. Like rice.

    • Jac

Since I’m camping, may as well think of a few.

Spooky / fans, Spooky / art, Spooky / Hell, Spooky / everyone in this comic probably

      • Heh

He goes with anything, i swear. To the funny ship, the cute ship, and to the spicy ship. Like i said, rice. And this it’s not a pun on his race. Srsly.

You said spooky/hell and now all i can think of is… LAAMPROS. Oh god that was the biggest chill my spine felt this month. /criesinacorner/

        • Jac

Oh. Does Spooky / Tsunami make it any better?

          • Heh

Never thougt about that. Suppose it does.

          • b3nc0

I’m sailling that ship since the first page of chapter one ♥

    • Klaus

      Spooky and Hunter?

  • Diana_Christine

what up, what up campers!! How ya’ll doin’?!

  • Okay I am here again. I have had a very busy day. Cleaned out the litter boxes, cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, swept and mopped the dinning and laundry rooms, cleaned up, vacuumed, and moved furniture in the den. I also got a shower in, got the heart monitor straightened out, and ate.

Doki is done for the day. (=_=) Now to just sit at the computer and hunt virgins and chillax.

    • b3nc0

Do you keep track of your daily activities to report to your doctor? I mean, to explain to change of rate during this busy day?

      • Nope, I have a record button that I push when I have any symptoms, then call the number on a land line, talk to the nurse for a second and then hit send. Sometimes after sending they will tell me if there is anything wrong or if I need to fix anything. Yesterday morning when I sent off, he asked me if everything was attached because it wasn’t picking up (I had just reattached one of them, and wasn’t aware the other had come off) and to take a reading after I replaced the pads (after a shower). So after the shower I record and send she said that my pulse was a little high (told her I had just gotten out of the shower, blah blah blah) and she told me to sit and rest for 15 minutes and then send again. Call back and everything is good.

Now if I just wasn’t having a reaction to the pads, things would be great….

  • Back for camping 🙂
I haven’t commented on much of anything this week. It’s been long busy days and I went to bed at 8.30 last night xD Now I’m here, still tired but so ready for a new page.

Have been tripping to see Spooky and see what state he’s in right now. Alex better not tease us for another page *lol* Even thought this is a damn good page to look at while waiting.

    • Danish!! *hugs* Hamlet streamed earlier!!! She said we won’t find out Cains name until…..

      • Heh

HAMLET STREAMED EARLIER? damm. I wanted to see this badly. Sorry to intrude, btw.

Also hello Danish, get cozy and join us all in the camp.

      • Darn! Yeah I just saw on twitter that she did a LS. I seem to be an expert on missing those at the moment *lol* Seriously, I miss about 4 out of 5 times by logging off my computer shortly before she announces the LS.

        • We are going to find out Cain’s name when Cain and Abel……..have a DATE.

          • b3nc0

            Guys, spoiler alert, please.

          • Sorry…. (>//’_’)>O

            I was too excited….forgive me?

        • I was actually lucky I didn’t miss it either, I was busy cleaning today and saw it when I was taking a break before showering.

  • Where is everyone?

    • Sorry feeling a little grumpy today.

    • I’m right here, just a little tired 🙂

Going between studying all the details of the page to catching up on stuff online I’ve missed during the week. And next week is gonna be just as busy for me.
I don’t have time to be this busy.. because I also have other things that needs to be done that would keep me busy xD

      • Cain and Abel are going to have a date! ^_^ (Ok sorry, but I have been fangirling over that ever since Hamlet said it)

    • mogoskier

I just got my internet back so I’m here now.

      • Yay for getting internet back!!!

        • mogoskier

Thank you, and it fast so fast

    • Jac

Boop boop. Checking in, occasionally. :3

  • Sapfo

    Hi you all!
It´s camping day. And you know what that means…. I´m working today, again! -_-
But I can have fun until I have to run xD

    • Yay, boo.. and yay. In that order for your comment 😉

      • Sapfo

But this time I am taking my Ipad with me 😀

    • Sapfo!!! *hugs* It was great seeing you for a bit at Hamlets LS!

      • Sapfo

You know I am a sucker for LS.
I would be completely impossible to be around if I missed a LS.
BTW Em was there for a minute.

        • Good thing you aren’t me who seem to miss most of them recently 😉 And damn, double darn now.

          • Sapfo

Sorry Wolf! I feel for you -_-
But I was only there for about one hour. So I missed all the spoilers that Doki is talking about.

          • date date date date date date date date date date

          • She said it would be about the middle of the chapter.

        • I think I missed her. I came in a little late due to cleaning…

  • That moment you realize you left the controler for the tv next to the couch 10 feet away, and doesn’t feel like leaving your chair to walk there and back to get it >.>
    /lazy saturday morning

    • @DanishWolf:disqus and @smsif:disqus!!! Holly says which ever wins is her favorite!

      • None of us, since Chris distracted me with ‘how to produce more Danes’ commercials 😉

        • and Holly asking me to pass a message along…

  • mogoskier

    The new page is up.
