311 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Bonus Comic One—Page 22-23

Jeez, Amanda. You’re supposed to be all super-sensitive and then you go telling Spooky that everyone who uses magic goes crazy. So now you’ve made him cry. Nice going! >:(

Oh, and…

***THIS IS A BONUS PAGE!***

Our forty-fifth bonus page in a row! And you yet again tipped over the target for the donation bar below. That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, May 28th (page 25!), Wednesday, June 4th (page 27!), Wednesday, June 11th, Wednesday, June 18th, Wednesday, June 25th, and Wednesday, July 2nd, there will now be an additional bonus page on Wednesday, July 9th! AND THAT WILL MAKE A FULL YEAR OF BONUS PAGES IN A ROW FOR THIS COMIC! That is INCREDIBLE! You all are TOTALLY AWESOME! Thank you so much!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporters MIGUN G. (who makes their third generous donation to The Young Protectors!), & Saxon B. (who makes their eightieth (!!) generous donation to The Young Protectors!) for their generous donations over the last few days!

Big hugs go out to long-time friend of The Young Protectors Marc B. for their super-generous $25 donation, their tenth (!) super-generous donation to this comic!

And ZOMG!, MONSTER-sized hugs and deeply grateful bows go out to long-time mega-friend, Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $100 donation, their seventy-first stunningly generous donation to this comic! You are indeed a SUPER-HERO, Christopher!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! We got to see a bit more of Spooky’s time in Hell! Glad to see that Spooky continued to make friends. (And you’ll want to pay extra attention to the demon Spooky is rescuing in the upper right of the page—he plays a large role in the upcoming Spooky Jones Illustrated Short Story [which, like this Bonus Comic, is another Kickstarter Stretch Goal reward!]) Meanwhile, back on Earth, Amanda is assuring our young traveler that he’s finally made it back home. Is she telling the truth? Is she actually someone real? Or is Amanda and everything else Spooky sees here just part of some elaborate fiction created to entertain beings who exist stretched out across time and space?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Hey first comment! (first time for everything…)

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Congratulations, starrwinter! 🙂

      • Starvation pays dividends 😉

        • b3nc0

          Here, have a waffle!
edit: Belgian one but not the one known around the world, this one is from Liege…

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Mmm…waffle

          • Chicken & waffles? ^____^ I have my sushi now and life is all good… but I would kill for some of those amazing waffles…

        • stickfigurefairytales

Now go get yourself some food!

    • Congrats Starr!!

      • I give you most of the credit for the Twitter alerts and waking my butt up from a nap 😉

        • *mumbles* I might have got it if you hadn’t pointed out my stalking fail….

    • Sapfo

Why is Starr holding my Virgin. I don’t get it? O.o

      • I was you in spirit and in quick refresh fingers ;)p

  • Those look like fun times….

  • Is, is that a tear? Yes, Spooky to be, you are home!

  • b3nc0

Oooo, me likey them pages ♥♥

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Hugs for Spooky now?

    • Lots of hugs for Spooky right now! I just keep falling more in love with Amanda too!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        I know! Me too!!

    • Exactly what I was thinking…open up those big hearted arms, Amanda, and really show him what it’s like to be home.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Now, I’m betting that red demon was one of the ones (if not THE one) who messed with Spooky’s head about sex and love.

    • b3nc0

Or maybe he wasn’t and that made it easier for the others to trick Spooky-to-be?

      • stickfigurefairytales

If that’s the case then I have a feeling red guy came to a tragic end, if only to make Spooky more vulnerable.

        • purplefoxglove

I’m afraid so – going by the determination on Little Spooky’s face while he’s protecting RedHotNo.2, I doubt he would have left hell without him…and I guess the detectives would have mentioned it if Little Spooky would not only have been naked and carrying a severed demon head, but also leading (or dragging) a possibly unconscious hot naked red demon along.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Unless the red demon really did turn out to be evil in the end and was just an incredibly clever manipulator, but Spooky eventually found out. That could also explain his absence from Spooky’s escape. I could see either possibility myself. I have the feeling that the answers will become clear in the other bonus comic.

          • purplefoxglove

Yes *sigh* I hope the second bonus comic will be included in one of the TYP books, too.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I want eeeeeverything. (I started reading this comic just a few days after the Kickstarter ended, and I’m so jealous of all the lucky people who’ll be getting trading cards and Spooky hats and whatnot.)

          • purplefoxglove

I’m with you! For several reasons, I was unable to contribute, too…and I *want* that Annihilator dossier! (The complete version; some parts of it should be in the books if I got that right) I’d even be happy with a .pdf version.
If I recall correctly, Alex said some of the kickstarter stuff will be available in the shop after the backers got their rewards…the stuff he’s got a surplus of. So it’s limited, but still! A chance 🙂

          • You will definitely get answers. 🙂

But just a heads up, it’s an illustrated short story, not another bonus comic. Prose, baby!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Ah, I apologize for the faulty semantics!

    • EyeDontNo

Guys, Spooky’s 13! I’m not getting a protective boyfriend vibe from the scene with the chained demon, I’m getting more of “That’s my Blood-Brother!” types of vibes. His best friend (closest thing to family) at this time is in danger and he’s protecting him.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Sadly, despite Spooky’s young age, we know from adult!Spooky’s conversation with Kyle in chapter 3 here http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/archive/ete-ch3pt1-page-27/
that he was subject to sexual attentions from at least one demon during his time in Hell. Considering that, I felt like it makes sense that the chained demon might tie into that story.

        • EyeDontNo

Subject to sexual appetites, not necessarily responded to in the same way. And most likely not the only appetite-related attentions he received (re: the scattered bones he’s in at the bottom of page 22).
Youngsters from most societies are more willing to form friendships and bonds with those from different cultures than their adult counterparts; and as I said, Spooky is only 13 and in a strange land. It seems (to me at least) that he would be more willing to sate his need for companionship rather for physical pleasure. If, and that’s a big IF, Spooky willingly became sexual with one of the members of the new society he would have done it after making a bond of some sort with the other being, Especially since from minute one here he has been attacked by almost every thing he came across. Otherwise he wouldn’t know if this “Blow Job” thing was really an attempt to eat him.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That’s fair, and I agree.

  • b3nc0

-Can- can I touch you, just to be sure it’s really real?

-Let my boobs alone or you’ll regret you’re not in Hell anymore‼

  • TwilightDreamer

omg! These are getting earlier and earlier, I love it! XD
aaawwww! :’) don’t cry Spooky, I’m going to soon ^-^
    Such a sweet page.

  • Oh Wow. Thank you, all three of you.

This really is a one of a kind page. The art, in variety and sophistication alone, is off the scale. The emotion is crazy deep and rich and once again dust has blown into my eyes, making them water up. Gee, Amanda seems to be showing Spooky how to say the perfect things to people undergoing real trauma.

Wow, just wow. Thank you Alex. Special page indeed. I have to go and soak it up. I encourage all three of you to feel VERY proud of yourselves for this exceptional work.

(I agree with your notes… all this crying is Amanda’s fault. LOL.)

All your effort truly shows. Amazing! And, just like that, the week is all kinds of BETTER!

    • Thank you so much, Christopher! I’m really glad you liked the update. 🙂

    • b3nc0

About the “Amanda seems to be showing Spooky how to say the perfec…” has she foreseeress (?) talent too and knows Spooky will have a friend in this peculiar setting one day?

    • silibub

No wonder Spooky handled Kyle’s situation so well — he learned from one of the greats!

  • mogoskier

Know all I want to know why Spooky has a demon by a leash.

    • b3nc0

Maybe he was another dimensional transfuge but happens to look like a demon?

      • Marie Laurent

Could be from a dimension where they look like that, even.

    • stickfigurefairytales

At first glance I thought they were chained together, but you’re right. Very intriguing.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I think that Amanda’s reassurance here is incredibly important. Spooky is somebody who has just survived an incredibly traumatic series of experiences and his self esteem is clearly in tatters. He views himself as monstrous not only because of his abilities but also because of his actions (which we still don’t know the complete story of). But one thing that adult!Spooky alluded to was that he may have had sex willingly (though he’s still underage and trapped in Hell so I can’t regard it as truly consensual) with whichever demon manipulated him into thinking that he might even be loved. The fact that Amanda affirms that Spooky is a brave kid who was in a horrible situation and her emphasis that he “did what he had to do to survive” means that she isn’t condemning him for anything that happened. I hope that that will help him as he starts to heal.

  • Jen Roberts

Okay, I am fully on board the Commander/Spooky ship now. I was teetering on the edge for a while now, but I can no longer deny it! I have searched my feelings and I know it to be true!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Hooray! Welcome to the ship! We’re having drinks on the fiesta deck now.

    • LOL. 😀

  • David Welbourn

Yet another amazing double-page spread. Lovely work. Thank you!

(Also part of me wants to regress to that child in the grocery store pointing ‘what’s that? what’s that?’ at everything. Particularly at the upper-right scene.)

  • b3nc0

Have you seen Spooky isn’t actually attached to the red guy (’til we know more about him) he’s holding the chain‼

  • …..I don’t think I would mind holding Mr passed out naked red guy’s chain….

….is it just me or could we infer from that image, that he was protecting Mr passed out naked red guy?

    • stickfigurefairytales

I think we could definitely infer that.

    • b3nc0

That’s what it looks like to me too… Maybe they were teamed in a wicked game or in a jail and Spooky only manage to free himself recently with the lightning stone™ from his end of the chain? but we’ll have to wait ’til the other spooky bonus comic to know

      • purplefoxglove

*sniff* and I wasn’t able to kickstart TYP…*sniff*

Are you sure it’s a stone Spooky is holding, and not his concentrated magic that spreads from its focus point?

    • David Welbourn

I agree with your inferences, but I’d prefer if we had an actual name for the passed-out guy. If no one minds, I’m gonna call him Linc Hellskin — until his real name is revealed or if anyone has a better name, of course

  • b3nc0
    • stickfigurefairytales

      Very pretty!

      • b3nc0

        Thanks.

  • b3nc0

Who took care of his hair all year long and did such a poor job the last time?
Does that confirm red guy died at some point & Spooky had to cut it himself or shave his head in grief?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Or maybe traveling from Hell messes up your hair. Although Kyle’s and Duncan’s hair was fine…

      • Elrohir

Yes…but Spooky spent an apparently hectic and hard fought year there. Kyle was only there some hours and fought no demons and Duncan’s hair clearly has buckets o’ product in it. I mean c’mon…when they got attacked by the guys with the power nullifier? Nary a hair out of place…no way that happens for real…unless “perfect hair” is a secret Duncan power? 🙂

        • Jakk Anthony Guzman

By my calculations, Kyle was there for 30-45 minutes. Laampros got there as soon as they arrived, came over to Kyle talked a bit, then they bargained and it was over.

          • Elrohir

Much more accurate Jakk. Even if I add in the time it took for Kyle to achieve his “lavagasm” (I think that’s what Chris calls them) before the gate opens. And it only opened a small gate to hell (as you can see in the distance shot before the gate dissolves). So I vote Spooky gets forgiven for the mussed coiffure. 🙂

          • Jakk Anthony Guzman

It seems to those of us who were reading the comic as it was posted online that he was there forever because we had to wait something like 6 to 8 weeks for that story arc to be completed. But in reality he wasn’t there too long. Seeing him tied up and helpless week after week was very difficult for many of us, and I think it added to that “never-ending” feel to that part of the story.

        • stickfigurefairytales

I maintain that Duncan uses the power of his charm to keep his hair in place.

    • Donald Burch

As many demons and devils say Earth is a hell worse than anything they can imagine. It’s very likely Spooky returned in a rough neighborhood and had to fight for his life. The police were called to some kind of disturbance in order to get to Spooky so quickly.

  • Toli Bera

Aaaaand then her face melts ala then end of FF8….

but in all seriousness, Spooky’s back story is awesome! (Also who was that cute demon he was cuffed too? >w>)

  • silibub

This spread is gorgeous and there are a lot of fascinating things going on, but I’m stuck on what Amanda’s saying about magic and the apparent perception of those who use it — “dangerous crazy.” It makes me wonder how one goes about acquiring magic powers in this universe — is magic innate in some people, can it be learned, or does it have to be taken by killing demons? Did Spooky absorb the powers of the demons he killed, and that’s why they remain “inside” him now? What’s that orb/stone he’s holding in the panel with the chained demon, since it seems to be the source of the magic he’s using? And if magic is something you have to take, I’m curious what the source of Sircea’s power is, then (because…of course I am).

My list of questions keeps growing! But I’m looking forward to learning the answers — thanks so much for the page, you guys!

    • b3nc0

The lightning stone™ might only be a channel for beginner magician?
Is there a convention for questions this month where we could exchange them to responses? (got a serious bunch of them too)

    • But if magic makes someone “dangerous crazy” what’s that saying about the Platinum Priestess?

      • Madock345

Nothing we didn’t already know about the Platinum Priestess.

        • D’oh! I suppose that’s true.

        • silibub

          Aw snap!

    • All good questions. 🙂

  • b3nc0

Good night to you Unitestaters, good day Europeans, I’ll borrow a couple of hours to the breaking dawn to stiffle my yawns ( ̆∩◊ ̆ں)

    • Night!! I am going to be posting my sunset pictures sometime soon-ish

  • davefragments

Hmm, he stabs the giant demon with the big teeth.
I did notice that demon in the upper right.
Very good page, The artwork is spectacular.

  • Sapfo

Alex, you are making it very hard to hunt virgins 😉

and a double page again. I love the flashbacks in the backstory so much. It´s so much horror. But at the same time you Alex are a tease. giving us just a glimps and leaving us wanting more.

and the demon in the chains? Is he Lamproos nephew Huey?

I don´t know if it´t my tired eyes, but that demon almost looks a little like Spooky himself. If Spooky was red and had horns growing out of his head that is. And in that panel, is Spooky well-placed to hide certain parts of the male anatomy?
*Try to look around Spooky*…. maybe?

    Thank you Alex, Adam, Veronica.

    • Huey! LOL!

It’s the Spooklet, demon-hell version doppelganger.

*starts to feel a little somber*

What if the red Spooklet doppelganger was a variation of Spooky himself? Created by some evil demon with great powers. Kept him as a pet and locked them up together? He and Spooky become friends because they understand each other. Tell each other, “I’m not leaving without you!” Hmmm. I hope that situation ended well even if Huey isn’t a doppelganger.

      • Sapfo

Lamproos have a lot of trouble form his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie;)

        • Elrohir

Wait! Lamproos re-incarnates as Donald Duck? Or great Uncle Scrooge McDuck? 🙂

          • Donald Burch

I vote Daffy. “I may be a craven little coward but I’m a GREEDY, craven little coward!”

          • Elrohir

“Consequences, shmonsequences. As long as I get the money.”
God I admire that Duck! 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

Hmm, he does look a bit similar, although Huey is more muscular than Spooklet in that panel.

  • YangYueLan

Wait, so what is the timing here? Spooks went in at 13 and now he is…? How old is he in the regular comic?

Also, the red oni that Spooky is protecting, is that Kyle?!?!?!

    • LimpBiskit

That was the first thing I actually noticed, the resemblance to Kyle.

    • Danny

That’s an interesting theory. If it is Kyle, that would raise some tricky questions about the timeline as far as Kyle’s human version on Earth… but since we only know that he is an orphan, whose father is Laampros, and who was in the foster care system near his twelfth(?) birthday, it’s possible.

For that matter, how would a demon king have a son that looks entirely human?

      • YangYueLan

I was going with the same reason Loki looks Asgardian not Jotun.

    • Klaus

Spooky was in hell for a full year, so this is 14th birthday, or close to it. He is 20 in the main comic.

      • YangYueLan

        Oooh, ok. Thank you!

  • Danny

Interesting that Amanda says “they say” — she labels the source of information as the infamous “they” instead of claiming the information as her own. It’s a cop-out; she doesn’t want to claim the opinion as her own. I wonder if she has been reconsidering the idea that magic is “crazy dangerous” before she met Spooky-to-be?

As has already been pointed out by other commenters, Spooky seems to be saving that red-skinned demon — is this unconscious demon the one that tricked him, manipulating him with lies of love? Or is this a friend – or, at least, an ally – that Spooky meets in Hell during the course of his adventures? What is this demon’s significance? Why is the demon chained up, but not the human? Did Spooky’s trouble with cops start in Hell, before running into BCPD? And how about that sphere? Is it a source of power for Spooky, or perhaps a focus? Did he steal it, find it, or create it?

Finally, while it would certainly mean relief to Spooky to be free of Hell, Amanda offers him “home” — in his anchor-less state, this, combined with her total empathy and understanding, is the greatest boon which she could grant him. That’s pretty powerful, even compared with his magical ability and her telepathy.

  • Dennis Grace

Alex, I think you’d make a great dad.

    • LOL. That’s very sweet. What makes you say that?

      • Heh

Besides the fact that you could tell the craziest bedtime stories a kid has ever heard?

      • Dennis Grace

Amanda’s handling of young Spooky. Spoken like a mom.

        • Ah. 🙂

        • Elrohir

@alexwoolfson:disqus And the fact that you wanted to create this story line. Teaching stories are an exceptionally good way to get youngsters to learn. You catch their imagination, and the lesson goes with it. Plus, nobody writes characters with this kind of understanding, compassion and love that doesn’t have those qualities in detail. And finally, given the way you deal with the lot of us and all of our questions, your capacity for patience is outstanding.
Love, patience, understanding, compassion, imagination and the talent for storytelling. Sounds like excellent parent material to me. Just sayin’…

          • Dennis Grace

Yep. You’ve totally outed yourself, Alex. By Amanda’s responses to Spooky, we all can see that you’re more than just a great storyteller. You’re a really good and compassionate person.

          • Well, both you and Dennis are big sweethearts, Elrohir. 🙂

          • someonelse

I just read this thread (totally agree by the way!) and then started reading this: http://what-if.xkcd.com/94/ and it occurred to me that Randall Monroe would make a really *bad* dad, but a fun uncle. Just thought I’d share that random connection with y’all… 🙂

  • Dennis Grace

It’s not a cop-out, Danny. She’s presenting that opinion as “conventional wisdom” with which she clearly disagrees.

  • Cydney Sabin

Is it just me, or is he protecting the (kinda cute) red demon from other demons?

    • Heh

And holding him on a chain to boost! I am going to love hearing how that happened

      • Cydney Sabin

Now this I have to hear/read/see…

  • Heh

He cried of relief! I sweat i cannot contain my unberable wish to hug him right now.

  • Klaus

I wonder what happens Saturday. This is page 22-23, and we will get page 24 next Wednesday.

    • Heh

Is saturday a day off, perhaps?

    • Cheshire

It’s a double-page spread. There was one once before, actually. Also in this chapter. There will still be another page on Saturday. ^^

      • Heh

Double spread pages count as one?

        • Cheshire

Pages 16-17 of this chapter were also a double-page spread, and there was still an update on the following update day. 🙂

          • Klaus

Alex has changed he text, It now says page 25 next Wednesday. Page 24 must have been an error.

          • Indeed it was. 🙂

  • Heh

My spookmander side keeps going all ‘ LOOK! THEY GOT CLOSER! LOOK, HER HAND IS ON HIS SHOULDER! LOOK, LOOK. HE IS STILL LOOKING AT HER WHEN HE CRIES!”

And then this side of me giggles.
    A LOT.

  • Madock345

Wow. This is really incredible. I was expecting spooky getting tortured and tormented for a year and then escaping or getting sent back… but a year in hell, constantly struggling to survive, and succeeding? Learning magic and having adventures and making sexy demon friends? MORE than friends!?!? (Probably not, but the fanart must flow.) No wonder so many people try and recruit him, no wonder he’s so confident all the time.

    • Yes. Spooky definitely had a rough start when he first arrived, but it was not 12 months of torture and torment. Once he got his footing, he found strength he never knew he had. And your description of his time there is a pretty good one. But that’s a story for another time. 🙂

  • I wonder, going by some of the other posts, if the “they say” part about magic is old wives tales told to children to keep them from playing with magic since magic can lead into dark and dangerous things?

  • Donald Burch

Seriously, after all of these awesome demon monster designs Laampros needs a design upgrade. His current look is way too plain to compete with these “lesser” demons. You guys must be having a great time designing these cool beasties.

    • Hours

I like Laampros’s design the best of all the demons we’ve seen so far. The perfect mix of regal and menace. (With a healthy dose of sex appeal.)

  • Kendall

Wow, that is QUITE a two-page spread there.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Technically Amanda, right now it doesn’t matter whether Spooky is *really* home. What matters right now is whether Spooky *believes* you when you tell him he’s really home. Roll on your persuasion skill; Alex will tell you what the modifier is for Spooky having been on the receiving end of that line before.

    • Amanda rolls diplomacy and Spooky rolls Sense Motive….

      • Donald Burch

Love the gaming references! I feel like I’m at home.

  • Oki, very fast comment because it’s 2am, I’ve been hit by the plague (extremely mean cold) and I have to get up in a few hours…
Spooky in the last panel is so hard to look at, and yet it’s so nice to see him finally realize he made it home.
That red demon dude Spooky is protecting, I wonder if he’s one of Laampros’s demon kids. He sure looks like a Laampros junior since the time line doesn’t fit with it being young Laampros himself – unless time in hell runs very different, of course. I’m sure Kyle can’t be the only one.

    • Ayella

Hope you feel better soon! X

    • stickfigurefairytales

I hope you feel better soon!

    • purplefoxglove

Spooky looks totally huggable, doesn’t he?

I hope you get well soon!

  • Okay, this page answers some questions, and opens up a whole lot more. I predict fanfic in Mr Laampros Junior’s future, if we don’t get bonus story soon. Or even if we do. 🙂

  • Klaus

If Spooky does not even remember his name, does he remember his birthday? How does he know it was “a full year” in hell?

    • stickfigurefairytales

Because he arrived on the festival of Hellsmas, an annual holiday in Hell, and it happened to be Hellsmas again when he escaped.

      • someonelse

Ooh, please, somebody draw a “Happy Hellsmas!” greetings card, featuring all the demons wearing party hats!

  • Jakk Anthony Guzman

Great page Alex, I’m happy to see that spooky was not a victim for a whole year there but was fighting/struggling to survive in that environment.

  • Kiri

I can see why Amanda is Commander – she has what it takes to be a great commander – both the sense and sensibility. I love this page, and I want to cry with Spooky – being home when you’ve been a long time away will do that to you. Spooky away in hell strikes me as the Spooky we know and love – one who’ll never go down without a fight. So glad to see he survived and triumphed!

  • Hours

Even before reading Alex’s post, I had a feeling that demon in the chains was gonna be important. Spooky saving sexy demons <3

  • fujoshifanatic

Another gorgeous double-page spread! Really beautiful work, Alex, Adam and Veronica! So much to look at and enjoy. I love how much story is being told on these two pages, like how Spooky showed his fighting spirit right out of the gate on the bottom panel of the first page, for instance. How many 13-year olds have the presence of mind and wherewithal to defend themselves after literally just landing in Hell?

And then we see him some time later, continuing to kick ass and doing what he has to do, using the resources available to him (what is that orb?) to defend himself and others (hey, little Spooky Demon Doppelgänger, I see you; hope to know more about you soon!), even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, since those demon solders’ facial expressions show they didn’t think he was a threat even in the last second before they were blasted (nice touch, Adam!).

And then finally back to the present, where we see Spooky finally begin to realize, against all odds, that maybe this isn’t some cruel trick orchestrated by sick-as-fuck demons, that he finally made it out, made ti back home, and he can finally let go and release all the pain and horror of his time in Hell in (hopefully!) the arms of a pretty girl bearing chocolate and soda in 3…2…1…

Excellent storytelling, TYP Creative Team! 😀

    • Thank you for the thoughtful analysis of this page, fujoshifanatic! Fun for me to read! 🙂

  • Mersharr

Of course Spooky would “befriend” a cute hot demon slave of his own.

  • <3

    now i want more Amanda. . . . .

    . . . . .and more Tsunami.
he needs his own backstory next, al

    🙂

  • purplefoxglove

#1: Holy Shit! Remind me to NEVER ever get on Spooky’s bad side! He’s dissolving the demons in panel 3, isn’t he? O.o

#2: Amanda, will you please, PLEASE hug him? Like, right now? I’m afraid that else, the two of you will be crushed by the flood of fans throwing themselves at Little Spooky on the next page.

    • Michael

Back in Current Time (aka future), I think Adult Spooky would love to have hordes of fans throwing themselves upon “little Spooky”. Judging by Chapter 1, Page 4…

      • purplefoxglove

Oh, you found a photo of me!

        • b3nc0

The purple U shirt one, right?

          • purplefoxglove

            You’re on to me 😉

  • SofiaT

Today was crazy busy, I only just managed to get a good look at the page now. My eyes immediately fell on the red Hellboy on the fourth panel and I wondered what’s up with him -he seems cute (for a demon), he is connected to Spooky, he’s unconscious and… is Spooky protecting him from the other demons??

Then I read Alex’s commentary under the page and all these questions just became a little more persistent and urgent in my head. This bonus comic is not even over and I’m already looking forward to the next one, jeez!!

  • petros0359

    Spooky. Shirtless.
    :: faint ::

    • Klaus

Those pants must be very durable.

      • petros0359

Yes, far more durable than his shirt or flip flops… But even sweat pants have their limits, and they did find him naked… Eventually.
Actually I suspect that adult Spooky probably hates sweat pants now.

      • stickfigurefairytales

In comics rules, pants are always the most durable piece of clothing. 🙂

      • Cman65

I never wear the things 😉

    • petros0359

      :: revives ::
…BTW, going to Australia on Saturday for a week… Do they have internet there or do you have to use the bush telegraph to get the next update…?

      • SofiaT

No, we have kangaroos delivering our mail.

        • petros0359

          :o)

          • SofiaT

Also, be careful of the drop-bears when you get here.
            They’re very dangerous!

          • petros0359
          • SofiaT

            Told ya.

          • petros0359

I’ll be safe in North Queensland right? No monsters or demons up there?

          • SofiaT

I don’t know about demons but you may come across a crocodile or two when you’re walking down the street.

          • petros0359

            Crikey!

          • Klaus

“Are you quite sure that there are no sharks at the beach?” “Sharks never come near this beach. They are afraid of the crocodiles.”

          • Cman65

Your going to North Queensland?????????? Mate there are real “big birds” there that can kick you to death.

          • Elrohir

And all this time I thought it was just when the koalas finally got stoned enough on the eucalyptus leaves to fall out of the tree? Sheesh…somebody messed up MY orientation to Oz. 🙂

          • Michael

            Exceedingly dangerous!

Even the yowies and bunyips are scared of drop-bears.

      • Cman65

do we have the inter-web here, yes but only on days that end with a Y

  • SofiaT

“…Or is Amanda and everything else Spooky sees here just part of some
elaborate fiction created to entertain beings who exist stretched out
    across time and space?”

I am a being who exists stretched out across time and space. How cool is that?! (P.S: In my head now I’m singing “I am a traveler of both time and space…” -and then Jimmy Page’s guitar comes in)

  • Oh, an elegant and finely crafted link to the double-page spread.

    Cool.

    TRiG.

  • Jackal

    *GROSS SOBBING*

Alex, ya bastard! You got Meaningful on me!

  • Tracey Squaire

As soon as I saw that little red demon I knew he was important!

  • Michael

That’s exactly what a demon would say to get you to drop your guard…

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

      Or possibly something else HMMMM???

  • Pikinanou

It was like Battle Royale but with monsters… for a whole year.

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

Aw, I ship these two so hard. <3 Poor Spooks. I like seeing him defending that other demon…even with all the horrible shit he was going through, he was still willing/able to worry about someone else's safety,, much less defend them? Such a complete little badass. Even if I did not love him before I do now.

    • Klaus

I ship Spooky and mr. Red too! Only Spooky needs to be a little older before they go beyond the holding hands stage.

      • Elrohir

**Still holding out for the possibility that Spooky is not tied to one gender for his relationships…I don’t know if that includes demon kind, but then again…maybe “Red”…and Kyle is the son of a king of hell as well…opportunities abound**

      • b3nc0

You mean “beyond the holding chains stage”? someday i’ll finish typing this kind of comment & still think it’s as funny as it was in my head

  • Klaus

Spooky told Kyle (ch3pt1-page-27) that some demons tried to mess with his head with love. Is that what the Red Demon is doing? Tricked Spooky into loving him to the point where he defends the demon against impossible odds, only so that it will be more devastating when he turns on him?

    • zunden

If Spooky loves him, why did Spooky keep him on a leash?

More likely, Spooky is using him to find his way out. Nothing better for navigation than grabbing a local and asking for directions. Problem is that in Hell, you might have to give the local a very clear reason to tell the truth.

      • Klaus

I may not be Spooky who put that leash on him. Maybe he is holding on so the monsters won’t grab him and run.

Or maybe mr. Red is fueling Spooky’s spell through the chain.

  • Sapfo

It seems that Alex is not the only one who sneaks up with their new the new pages 😉

    Starfighter have updated

    • b3nc0

What a bunch of Sneaky Sneakety McSneakers, them authors they are!

  • bronakopdin

    late, later, brona…
well better late than never it is, right? ^^

And I get rewarded with more MONSTERS YAY!!!
When I saw the red dude I already thought he’s kinda cute and when I read your comment on the stretch goal, Alex, my heart made a little jump!

(It really is too bad that I was late for the Kickstarter… Will the mentioned Bonus chapter be included in the printed version? Or was it a special only available online by backers?)

Spooky sure is quite the survivalist here! I mean he DID have a belly, so we can assume he wasn’t the sport-loving type and yet he somehow avoided getting eaten and defended himself AND others (or at least one guy xD) despite his original condition! He just didn’t give up and I recommand him for that! (I myself would have ended as one of those flip flops)

That “adventure” didn’t make him mad at all… he kept his mind cool at least to the point where he could still evaluate the situations and adjust to a way to get out of them! It made him stronger for sure!
Yet it was more than traumatic so I can’t blame him for thinking that he became a monster… now it’s therapy that will heal him up, and that therapy is called “trust and friendship” 😀

Amanda took the first steps to his rehabilitation ^^

    • The Spooky Jones Illustrated Short Story will be available for sale to the general public in some form after all the Kickstarter backers get sent their copy. 🙂

      • purplefoxglove

We love you too, Alex 🙂

      • bronakopdin

awesome! Thanks for the info 🙂

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hooray! Thank you, Alex!

  • Thank you so much, Keys2tkingdom! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the Bonus Comic—and yes, this was something special I’ve been looking forward to sharing with you all. I think Adam and Vero just knocked this one out of the park. 😀

  • Beatrix Muircastle

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww I just wanna group hug them

  • Cman65

Who is the little red guy ? Maybe you could get him to go on a date with Kyle after

  • Nate

“Or is Amanda and everything else Spooky sees here just part of some elaborate fiction created to entertain beings who exist stretched out across time and space?”

I believe these beings are called…. readers. 😉

    • Elrohir

I wanted to say something about this yesterday when I read it. Because it so ably ties together not just the current readers, but folks reading TYP decades from now. But I’m still at a loss for a descriptor that will match what you wrote. So I’m stuck with, that was a really beautiful turn of phrase Nate, seriously.

      • Nate

I’d like to take full credit for it (as I’m a writer) but I’ve read a lot of Grant Morrison, so this sort of thing comes naturally. 😉

        But still, thanks.

  • Adam Irving

I really like the symmetry on this page, how the rock formations on the left seem to grow up and into the rock of the cavern on the right. Creates a nice sense of connection while still separate. Also, I want to give kudos to Amanda’s dialog. I’m not sure why this page caught my attention, but I noticed here that her language is really age-appropriate. It can be easy as an adult writer to give younger characters more eloquence and vocabulary than might be appropriate. I’ve certainly made revisions in my own writing along those lines. Nice job on nailing a subtly like that, along with the big stuff!

    • Thank you, Adam. That’s a really nice compliment. 🙂

      • Beatrix Muircastle

and well deserved man you do some beautiful writing… I’m tearing up reading it again.

    • Donald Burch

I write younger characters too and I can attest to the difficulty involved in keeping words and actions age appropriate. Thanks for pointing out yet another reason why I admire Alex’ work.

  • Marie Laurent

But imagine if he wasn’t home and he still isn’t home in the current arc and it’s all a dream D:

    • zunden

If he’s not home yet, I’d bank on it being a demon’s trick, not a dream. I also wouldn’t be surprised, honestly, if the demons had done this to him before… Thinking you’ve made it home when you haven’t would be devastating to you and hilarious to them.

      • Marie Laurent

Exactly. Although if it was a dream it would be interesting because it could turn into something like the Metaphor in oglaf.

  • Klaus

Spooky is very strong. I only just noticed that he is not bracing that staff against the ground, he is pushing it through the demon with his arms.

    • EyeDontNo

Seeing the length of the shaft, he may have braced it on something until it was all the way in, and then pushed forward as the hole loosened up.
Did not intend for that to sound so sexy.

      • Elrohir

Possibly, although he has his feet braced against it to keep his position and, I would guess, to keep it from falling forward on him.

      • Michael

With a mighty thrust of his glistening muscles…

Wait a minute, this kid’s just a teenager! Get your head out of the gutter, EyeDontNo, and give me a hand up once you’re out.

        … don’t even start.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

She made him shed a tear! Spook is really human after all!

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Thank you for adding a Doctor Who reference, I’m in semi withdrawl until it restarts later this fall.

  • Michael

The more I think about it, the more integral to the main story this interlude seems. The timing, the themes, the characters are all perfectly positioned to enhance and explain the previous chapter. Just when we most need an exploration for Spooky’s seemingly out-of-nowhere maturity and depth of understanding of Kyle’s choices and mistakes, and his compassion re. Kyle’s demonic encounter and possible origins, here is an “interlude” that shows us exactly how much Spooky knows and understands. I’m really looking forward to the flash-forward, because now we will be able to read between the lines and beneath the body language to see how the bond between Kyle and Spooky grows as they share and help one another.

Alex et al., I know this was supposed to merely be Bonus Content for the kickstarter, but I’m putting my vote in for upgrading it to Main Story status in the archives if not in the print run.

    • You’re right that even though this is “just” a bonus comic, it was my intention that the information here be connected to (and hopefully useful for understanding) the main Engaging the Enemy story arc. 🙂

And it’ll definitely be included in the printed book (Volume One).

      • Adam Black

        I enjoy Amandas narration here.

When you go into more detail about Spooklet Hell-raising adventure , that might be a nice framing-device

        • While the Short Story is using something different, that would be a nice-framing device. I’ll think about it for a future story.

Glad to hear you’re liking how it’s working here. 🙂

  • Mentor Imvu

I want to know this too.

  • Vasyl

The one thing I am interested in is who the hell is the demon boy. He looks sexy.

    • vessto

I was just about to say the same!;)

      • Vasyl

Perhaps a better question is who is he and why is spooky protecting him/holding the chain to his shackle?

  • b3nc0

Boy am I late?! Should be sleeping for a couple hours already… Here, have these https://plus.google.com/photos/114661535605160092496/albums/6016357951502788289/6016363350934337762?pid=6016363350934337762&oid=114661535605160092496 Got carried away by @dokidokibaka:disqus’s example and obviously the sunset itself…

    • I am envious of some of those…..very envious….

      • b3nc0

You’ll just have to stop by with your camera next time the sun grants us this kinda show ;°)

    • vessto

      Gorgeous pic!

      • b3nc0

        Thank you…

    • Elrohir

Some really gorgeous photos there. I like too many of them to list them all, but #10 was particularly eye catching. Brilliant colors.

      • b3nc0

Thanks! I try to play with sensitivity to catch slightly different effect/contrast (#9 is nearly the same…)

        • Elrohir

Both are striking. The oranges and reds in #9 are intense and I really like them, but something about #10 just struck a little harder. So many good ones though…you and @dokidokibaka:disqus have definitely been feeding souls with your photography…

  • vessto

I want the naked cinnamon demon!! Have some interesting plans for him!

    ^^___^^

Thank you for the next amazing page!

    • Heh

Cinnamon! That’s it! Im so calling him by that name forever.

    • bronakopdin

haha! What a great name 😀

  • SofiaT

@alexwoolfson:disqus, I hope you’ll excuse my using your comments section as an advertising board but this is a great project I stumbled across on Kickstarter and I wanted to share it with the community.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/470883981/fhs-fightback-a-feminist-resource-kit-designed-by

Maybe the Aussies in the fandom would like to back it on Kickstarter or maybe young girls and boys (as well as teachers) in America and elsewhere would like to take the idea and do something similar in their schools, in their part of the world -this is an issue that knows no borders really.

And I don’t think it’s irrelevant to mention this here, as I’ve noticed that sexism, misogyny and homophobia often go hand in hand. Tackle one and you’re one step closer to tackling the other.

    Thanks!

    • vessto

“I’ve noticed that sexism, misogyny and homophobia often go hand in hand.” – absolutely true and what leads these hands is the religious fanaticism. Teaching kids to hate is one of the owrst diseases of our time.

  • Donald Burch

“I’ve noticed that sexism, misogyny and homophobia often go hand in hand” Truer words have never been spoken @disqus_P2huBPd9nS:disqus. This prods something I find disturbing in some previous comments. I wrestle with how to mention it without coming across as shrill and alarmist. This is a great group and I never see any deliberate harm in anyone’s behavior. Best to just say it and trust my friends here to ask questions and understand. I refer to comments about Spooklet’s weight.

Some comments have pointed out how “out of shape” Spooky looks in the flashbacks and I think about body image and body shaming. The character in the flashback is only 13 years old. Many young boys are naturally heavy set and some wrestle with weight all their lives. I find it strange that a boy of this age is subject of this kind of talk. Is weight a sign of weak character? Laziness? Clearly not as we’ve seen with how Spooklet rises to the challenge before him. I’m not sure how to feel about it. I only find it disturbing, like how girls are held to an unhealthy and unrealistic standard of weight and appearance.

    • SofiaT

It’s interesting that you mention this, just a few minutes ago I was reading this article: http://www.dailylife.com.au/dl-beauty/men-stop-telling-us-to-love-our-bodies-20140522-38rcg.html

While women often have to “abide” to stricter and higher standards of beauty, and they’re usually more harshly judged than men when it comes to appearance, beauty standards for men are getting stricter nowadays as well. Although for men, it’s not so much “beauty” per se, but their prowess, vitality and strength that’s being judged -look at the latest James Bond. You wouldn’t call the man handsome by conventional standards but he’s fit enough to make women (and men) everywhere swoon, whether he’s in a tuxedo or naked and tied on a chair. And by “fit enough” I mean he’s the kind of fit you have to spend 3 hours a day in a gym to achieve.

When you’re an action hero, or a hero of any kind, the expectation is that you’ll fit those (very high) standards. Any urban fantasy book will attest to that -all the male heroes have six-packs, corded muscles and are at least 6 feet tall.

But that’s what I like about Alex’s work. He doesn’t give a shit about expectations. He creates a humanoid robot who can feel and think, challenging our perception of what it means to be human, a superhero who is gay, challenging our perception of manliness, a team commander who is both female and badass (and dresses sensibly too!), a female villain who is middle-aged yet still retains her sex appeal and uses it as a weapon, another female villain whose greatest strength is her intelligence and a boy who is very gifted and popular yet not particularly fit (Alex has let us know that in these pages Spooky is the thinnest he’s ever been in the whole comic, which means adult Spooky has gained back some of the weight he lost while he was in hell; and he’s obviously fine with it). And we already know Spooky can kick some serious ass, with baby fat or without.

Alex’s comics challenge the perceptions and expectations we have of our heroes and villains and offer a certain balance that I’ve yet to see anywhere else. In his world women are equally, or even more likely to have a position of power and the good guys are regular guys with insecurities and problems just like the rest of us, even if they have superpowers and all. And his antagonists are multidimensional and intriguing, not cookie-cutter villains.

      • Donald Burch

@disqus_P2huBPd9nS:disqus, Your words hit the nail on the head far better than I can say. Thank you and I’m honored that my concerns for body image help inspire thought and raise awareness.

    • Jakk Anthony Guzman

I noticed it too Donald, I thought it was a bit harsh since he obviously outgrew it. And I thought it was a good idea to show him slightly overweight and not always perfect and fit as superheroes are often portrayed. I thought it made him more human, more real.
But people are obsessed with weight and body image in our culture, and if you show someone who’s a bit overweight, “not perfect”, then you’re going to get a gazillion comments on it.

    • I’m glad people are talking about this. (And of course I’m glad it’s being done in a respectful manner, not that I would expect anything less from our group here. 🙂 )

Sofia, in her comment below, very kindly points out that one of my goals is to upend some of the stereotypes and expectations that I feel are both harmful and untrue when it comes to our understanding of who can be heroes (and also who can be romantic leads.) Along with race, gender identification, sexuality and other things, showing that folks with different body types can also be heroes and romantic leads is something that’s important to me to show. I would not dream of claiming that I have accomplished all of that with what I’ve released so far—it is a long project—but it is something I intend to keep pursuing over my entire body of work.

While I do believe that women tend to get especially wacky messages about what their bodies “should” be for them to be worthy human beings, guys (especially young guys) get those kinds of messages too. And I think that’s nutty and wrong-headed and as a creator, I will use my work to push against that to show what I truly believe to be the case—that despite what the media tries to sell you, that people with all kinds of different bodies can experience great sex, love and happiness and can be kick-ass heroes in the world. That in real life, while of course “looks matter”, different people like lots of different looks and that being an upbeat, confident and caring person who can step outside of their own drama to help others matters a lot more in finding love than your bodyfat percentage. This isn’t “how I wish it would be” fantasy writing on my part; it’s based on my own experience and what I really believe.

So, yes, Spooky at age 13 did not have a low bodyfat percentage and he kicked lots of ass in Hell and made it home. And he does not have a low bodyfat percentage now (nor is he tall or white), but he’s still kicking ass and is the most romantically successful of all the members of The Young Protectors. Adult Spooky might not look like what we’re so often told a sexy leading man hero type must be, but I’d like to think that for at least some of the readers here, I’ve done an OK job of showing that he is just that.

Thank you for bringing it up, Donald..

      • Donald Burch

Happy to help raise awareness, Alex. I appreciate your line “being an upbeat, confident and caring person who can step outside of their own drama to help others matters a lot more in finding love than your bodyfat percentage.”

I live by a saying that helps me keep perspective. “Normal in relation to what?” Meaning, who sets the standard for what is “normal”? Who is qualified to make that call? I err on the side of “happy” and “healthy” and leave others to find what that means for them.

  • Paul Giacinto

Hi Alex, once again amazing work! Plus a big thanks for turning me on to buying time. Now I’m obsessing over two comics. Can’t believe these are out there and if they’re more please keep sharing. Would love to learn more about the web comics. Hopefully one of these days I will learn how to do the animation drawings, I’m sure they’re is a lot of equipment and programs involved. They didn’t have these courses when I was in college. So yeah, I’m old…LOL

    • Thank you, Paul! Glad to have turned you on to BT—it’s definitely a goodie—and glad that you’re enjoying The Young Protectors too! 🙂

  • b3nc0

    Whu?
    What is it now?
    No “wicked-early page” announced?
Well, I’m not angry, here have some pics:
    https://plus.google.com/photos/114661535605160092496/albums/6016709806192025985/6016715550692825058?pid=6016715550692825058&oid=114661535605160092496

    • SofiaT

      Look up! 🙂

      • b3nc0

Thanks, I was yet again lost on Google+ pics galleries…

  • “Wicked early page” announcement.

    You’ve been warned.

    • SofiaT

      Hehehe.
      We’re ready. >:D

    • We are on to you Mr Woolfson…

      • Thanks goodness I was working my way through Twitter and had this page open. Thanks again, Doki!

  • davefragments

And I have so much to do to get to bed.
    wait, wait, wait, wait . . .

  • jreed3842

I’m here to camp… and then I find out that there’s another wicked early page! *eats the s’mores as quickly as humanly possible*

    • That’s…pretty much how I’m feeling right now.

    • Gimme! I deserve it. My computer is being bad. It didn’t want to start and then it started, so I’m backing everything up frantically. I need the sugar!

      • jreed3842

        I’ve got plenty to spare!

        • YAY!! I swear technology just likes to cause trouble.

          • jreed3842

            I understand that feeling. Lol.

    • Hey jreed! I have some Strawberry and Peach jellos!

    • Recipe. Take some sugar cones, add small snickers candy in bottom. Add more chocolate (Hersheys kisses? Butterfingers? Peanut butter cups? NUTELLA??). Stuff large marshmallow on top. Wrap in foil. Throw onto campfire until done and eat gooey, chocolatey treat!

      • SofiaT

        What is a sugar cone?

        • Waffle cone basically.

          • SofiaT

You mean, like for an ice cream?

          • Yup.

            Ah. Thanks. 🙂

          • Thanks! Was looking for a link.

          • So many different types of cones out there. I was trying to find an image, but couldn’t decide which one. 🙂

          • It didn’t help that I started to get distracted by the thought of ice cream.

          • That too. We made some for tonight. Coffee Chocolate Chip. Granted it’s made with decaf espresso, but still good.

          • O_O

I better run to the store after the page posts. I have some fantastic coffee liquor that tastes divine on ice cream. Why not? I’ll think of an excuse…or not.

          • We’re out of kahlua or we would have made coffee kahlua ice cream. Mmmm. Need to get some of that.

Edit: But there is never not an excuse to have coffee liquor

          • SofiaT

I had a peanut-butter & honey sandwich and Turkish coffee for breakfast. Now all this talk about food has me contemplating having lunch.

            It’s only 11.30am *sigh*

          • That’s about when we got lunch in high school. 11:35 right after fifth period.

          • SofiaT

Back home we have lunch at around 2pm.
Here I’m used to having it at 12.30pm on weekdays and whenever the mood strikes me on weekends (could be 4pm if I’m busy)

          • Well when food calls, it’s hard to resist. 🙂

      • jreed3842

        Omg! That sounds DELICIOUS!

        • One of my co-workers went camping this weekend and is going to try the recipe.

      • b3nc0

        THAT’S more like it (*¬*)

  • b3nc0

Is everyone lurking and refreshing on the next page URL already?

    • SofiaT

      Yep. “Page not found”.

      • b3nc0

Have you tried another double page?

        • SofiaT

There shouldn’t be a double page this time.
Alex states above that Wed/day’s page is p.25.

          • b3nc0

FYI on p21 comment Alex announced a p22 on Wednesday, so…

          • SofiaT

            Hmmmm… Tricky Alex.

  • Donald Burch

I’m not camping per se as I have a very early and fun day with mutants and friends tomorrow. Nonetheless I’m happy to be here! I can scarcely wait for what Alex springs on us next.

    • We’re quite happy to have you! 🙂

      • Donald Burch

Thank you, Admiral! I’ve enjoyed your thoughtful comments here and It’s a pleasure to meet you.

    • b3nc0

      Mutants?

      • Donald Burch

Why yes, I hesitate to mention specifics because I never know when copyright or politeness issues become a factor but we’re seeing a movie with a big “X” in the title and it deals with future and past days. 😀 I hang out with lots of old mutant friends and then we see the movie. It’s sure to be lots of fun.

        • b3nc0

I’m sure it will! Have a nice day ^^

          • Donald Burch

            Why, thank you!

    • b3nc0

Why now? I’ll be lost again & never got a virgin of my own?!

  • Sapfo

    Good morning World

    • b3nc0

      Morning to you, Miss Sapfo!

    • I have a feeling Alex is being even sneakier tonight.

      • Sapfo

        What ever do you mean?
        Is he also sly?

      • b3nc0

Yeah, building the pression/pressure (idk?) then leaving us be…
edit: Would he let us steam ’til normal update hour?

    • Good morning, Sapfo!!!

So does it still count as camping if you are staying in a hotel?

    • I’d call it luxury camping. It’s for the comfort-conscious, if not super-adventurous, types. Though if you’re interested in adventure, I can suggest a lot of ways to cause trouble in a hotel XD

  • Heh

    Am i late?

  • Jay Demetrick

Hello! What’s the story behind the naked devil boy on a chain?

    • Derkins

I never expected to see this much of spooky’s story in the first place. I’m curious how much more we may find out about all this in the future. The more I see the more curious I become! I’m fascinated by this hell dimension. It seems very unique, as far as hells go. In the literary sense. And his adventure in it. As we were saying on a previous page, this could totally use it’s own spin-off comic.

  • SpookyDomme

Tearing up a little here, man. Aww.

  • Midori Ren

It looks like he’s defending a someone. Wish we got to hear a bit of that story.
