The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Bonus Comic One—Page 19

295 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Bonus Comic One—Page 19

Is it just me or do y’all also get the impression that Spooky doesn’t like having his mind read?

OK. So, I discovered this other webcomic called Buying Time last night at 11:00 P.M. and stayed up reading it until 4:00 A.M. — I couldn’t stop. It’s that good. It’s a gay romance set in a cyberpunk future where people have to pay for any and all social interactions. That’s the central conceit of the story and you just have to accept it, and you should, because if you do, you’ll be treated to a sweet, funny, sexy story with great art and adorable heroes who just happen to be gay — and it uses a really engaging, animated format that’s just pure fun. It updates every Sunday (with time off between chapters), but due to the format, each update is really like several regular webcomic updates in one. The chunks are quite satisfying.

I’m serious. You have to go check it out and let yourself get as charmed with it as I was. There’s nudity and sex (including uncovered weenies), but all very tastefully done. I’m giving this my strongest recommendation. Go click your way through it right now and tell ’em your pal Alex sent you and what you thought. Make that creator’s day. Light up their Comments Section like a Christmas tree!

Time very well spent. 🙂

We had our forty-third bonus page in a row on Wednesday and, thanks to your generous donations, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, we’re also going to have bonus pages on Wednesday, May 14th (page 20!), Wednesday, May 21st (page 22), Wednesday, May 28th (page 25!), Wednesday, June 4th (page 27!), Wednesday, June 11th, Wednesday, June 18th, and Wednesday, June 25th! Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! Baby Spooky says he’s “dangerous.” Dangerous like a cute, widdle puppy maybe! 😀 Will we find out more about his time on Planet Bugzilla? More importantly, will we find out what happened to his flip flops? And most importantly, will Amanda give Spooky his hug now or after she scruffs his hair?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! DING! Edit 5/10/14 12:12 PM: YOU ARE UNSTOPPABLE! And you’ve done it again! You’ve yet again tipped the donation bar below past its target. You all TOTALLY ROCK! Thank you so, so much! 😀

  • Scary Spooky is scary (and adorable)

  • Sapfo

    R.I.P Flip-flops

  • SofiaT

Makes me think of a kitten that tries to sound like a lion… although in this case there really is a lion in there.

  • Seriously DANGEROUS!

Carrying the head of a demon, naked. I’d say so.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    I love Amanda.

  • SofiaT

    Suggested webcomic bookmarked and saved.
I have a feeling cleaning the flat will have to wait a little longer…

    Thanks Alex!

    • Enjoy! Let me know what you think! 🙂

      • SofiaT

I only just started chapter 2 but I love the concept so far & the format is very unique.
Brings me the same feeling of anxiety and jitteriness I had when I was reading 1984 but that’s a good thing. Vinnie is very likable and you can’t help but root for him so I’d better go back and continue reading!

        Thanks again for the recommendation!

        • Cool! Keep me posted!

(And yes, Vinnie is very likable. Definitely flips my choose Samwise over Legolas switch. 😉 )

          • I read it all last night….it is really good! Thank you so much for sharing it with us Alex!!

          • Glad you liked it, Doki! 🙂

  • I got here just in time I see 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Yay, hi Danish!

    • I was wondering if you were going to make it, Danish.

      Good to see you!

      • I’ve been awake for about 15mins. Computer of course wanted to do an update installing when I turned it on, so had to wait until that was done xD

    • Morning Danish sweet!

    • Starrwinter

Last update before the trip, eh? 😉

    • Morning Danish!

    • Sapfo

      Morning Danish!

  • “I don’t scare easily. Not when there’s a good person who needs my help.”

You just got called a good person Spooky! Not “scary person” or “dangerous person”!!

  • Sapfo

Alex, do not forget that Amanda has to pinch his cheeks. Oh he is so cute and sweet. He thinks he can do any kind of harm….. ^_^

(not even rembering demon head from page )

  • Toli Bera

If Amanda pokes around in other peoples heads… did she already know about Kyle’s “secret” and just pretended not to know / didn’t care to let it out? and if she did, did she also know his plans for the date W/ Anni? Can I get a ruling on this?

    • Hmm. Hadn’t really thought about that but it makes sense. On the other hand, she may purposely not go lurking around inside people’s heads out of respect.

Seems like she can control her gift.

      • Toli Bera

Seems like something kinda vital to the plot in my opinion. XD so I was curious.

    • Cydney Sabin

My guess is her power is an active-type. By that, I mean she has to activate her power. And she doesn’t use it willy-nilly. I figure she only uses her powers when she has to, rather than just whenever she feels like it. So she probably wouldn’t know all because she never asked, so to speak. That’s just my thoughts on it.

    • Cydney is right—it’s an active-type power. She’s being honest here: even at age 16 she didn’t make a habit out of poking around in other people’s heads and she does it much less often 6 years later.

And to people she considers her friends and teammates? Without asking their permission first? She would consider that a tremendous violation of their trust. There would have to be a clear, serious and present danger for her even to consider it.

      • Thanks for the explanation, Alex!

I finished the first chapter of Buying Time. Really interesting way to present a story. I kept thinking it must have taken ton of work.

        • It seems to require a lot of work. He needs to take a big chunk of time off between chapters and in the comments, he’s discussed maybe switching to a twice a month schedule. But I can also see some time-saving happening by being able to re-use the backgrounds (and even some poses/expressions) like that. Quite clever, really. 🙂

  • Mary Klemzak

Yes, yes, may the scruff begin!

I also think he’s starting to trust. Had to find out sometime. He might understand, considering how it was sort of what she had to do, to get through to him. I hope he warms up to her, it looks like he will.

After all, what guy doesn’t like the question “Whatcha thinkin??”

  • stickfigurefairytales

I think that we’re really getting a good look at what makes Amanda a hero in this bonus comic: she’s truly committed to helping other people, and she doesn’t give up easily. Her mention earlier about how she stole a car when she was 14 “to help some people in trouble” (and got into quite a bit of trouble herself as a result) helps highlight this, and so does her determination to help Spooky here. I’m so happy that we’re getting to see more of her character development. Amanda is clearly awesome.

  • Self doubt (about being safe) vs. another persons belief/trust in otherwise

… A known dilemma that comes in an infinity of versions.

  • Sapfo

Ethics: What about going into someone else’s head without permission, Amanda? What does the hero code?

    • Good question!

    • I think she thought since he was in trouble…? I guess she got more than she bargained for.

      • Sapfo

Ethics: I believe that one should not assume anything. Right now it feels like Amanda did assume that this was the right thing to do. But it is wrong to go into Spookys brain without permission. Now the question is whether the situation really demanded that she did it, or if it could have waited?

If only she had given the time she had enough she might very well gotten him to agree to talk. But she is 16, her mother and other people wants results. Which ends with Spooky get jammed (Spaceballs the movie ;P)

        • stickfigurefairytales

I agree that there are ethical issues raised by Amanda’s reading Spooky’s mind, and I would be curious about knowing more about how and why she decided to do so.

          • Sapfo

I think it is her age, maybe wanting to please her mother and to show of her powers to Dec. Parker. The reason is most likely not a simpel one and If we asked her she might not even know herself.

          • stickfigurefairytales

That could be…I think that there can also be a temptation to jump at a method one *knows* will be effective to accomplish something positive without necessarily considering the implications, and I could easily imagine a superpowered teenager (no matter how mature in most respects) being inclined to do so. No disrespect to teens intended, however! (I could see myself making a similar overstep.)

          • Sapfo

I just saw Alex Woolfson comment a bit down: “She would consider that a tremendous violation of their trust. There would have to be a clear, serious and present danger for her even to consider it.”
I think Amanda learn more and more with age, what is right and what is wrong.

And that might be what makes her a hero. doing the right thing more often. But the powers she got are a dangerous one when it comes to free will. Just because she thinks something is right, does not always makes it so. Who is to say what is right and what is wrong? The one with the power or the one who have no say in the power being used agains them?

I will end my part of this discussion here, otherwise I will just go on and on.

        • I agree. Ethically what she did was hazy. She took certain liberties. I do think she felt pressed when she would have most likely preferred to go slow.

As Grandma was fond of saying: What a dilemma.

    • Cydney Sabin

Kind of a grey area for hero-ing here. AH THE MORAL DILEMMA!

  • davefragments

Jeepers, the page was early. I waited until I got in bed all comfy and missed the camping. — Good page.

  • Danny

Amanda’s display of vulnerability here is interesting. It would likely be very hard to have those around you knowing that, if you so chose, you could read their mind, listen to their every thought. Although it is her power, it would likely be very isolating. And now, this person who has barely began to open up, whom she may feel a connection with, knows about her telepathy and is reacting negatively.

Spooky likely feels, and quite fairly, that Amanda reading his mind is a breach of his privacy, perhaps the only privacy which he had in Hell. Of course he is going to react defensively, even aggressively, to what he may consider to be a betrayal and a very legitimate threat. Yes, Spooky is dangerous; he would have had to cultivate that to some extent in order to survive among demons. But he only really presses the matter now when he is being – as he probably sees it – attacked from a totally new angle. The physical threat of the police officers interrogating him was not enough to cause this sort of reaction; he could take anything that they threw at him physically because he’d been subjected to much worse. But the threat to his mental privacy seems to have been enough to push him close to the edge.

Amanda’s going to have to diffuse the situation, and it will likely take a while for Spooky to regain even the small amount of trust he had in her before. Also, Amanda will have to do this while dealing with her own hurt feelings from Spooky’s reaction, her feelings of guilt for invading his privacy, and perhaps even the feelings of discomfort of being asked by her mother to find out the information needed – it may be the only option for quick access of necessary data, but it is rather sketchy morally. Besides, other people’s heads are not pleasant places, and I wonder if she has to protect herself from losing her own identity while in others’ head-spaces and how she accomplishes that.

    • SofiaT

      That’s a great comment, Danny.
      Lots of food for thought!

      • Danny

Thanks. It kind of hit me, seeing Amanda’s expression in panel two, all uncertainty with a touch of guilt.
For some reason, sleep deprivation seems to be aiding my logical reasoning faculties today…

    • Very good analysis here, Danny. Well done. A pleasure to read. 🙂

      • Danny

Thanks! But I appreciate all the food-for-thought that you incorporate into your comics. It makes them a joy to read and to dissect.

      • Jeabro21

    • Klaus

Interesting. I did not see it like that at all. I thought that Spooky is not reacting negatively to having his mind read. His warning is a warning, not threat. He might hurt Amanda even though he does not want to. As I see it he is warning her because he does not want her to get hurt. Because he likes her. But he is looking rather agressive in the last panel, so you may well be right. Or it might be a reaction to her poor choice of words in panel 5.

      • Danny

That’s a good point. It’s perfectly possible; he did seem to connect with her over the chocolate and soda. It may be equal parts both warning (“I don’t really want to hurt you but I can’t always control my powers!”) and threat (“Stay out of my head or you will regret it!”).

Saxon_Brenton has an interesting perspective above, about it being self-recriminating, which I thought was a pretty good comment, too.

  • Omg, Alex! Thank you so much!

Because of you I FINALLY found Buying Time again. Don’t remember how, but I found that jewel of a comic shortly last year when there weren’t more than 6 ‘pages’, but I accidently lost the bookmark (along with others) and simply couldn’t remember what it was called. I never saw anyone describe the comic, or say the name in the time after, so I forgot about until now 😀

    • He’s mentioned he’s allergic to social media and so I think it’s sort of the best kept secret is awesome new gay comics. I was shocked that I just heard about it so I wanted to give it a good signal boost.

Glad to reconnect you with it! If you were only six pages in, you’re in for a real treat! 😀

      • … *sobs* and just as I leave the country for two weeks and don’t have to wait to read/catch up to it again until I get home xD
Hmm, now I wonder even more how I found it. There was a time I clicked so many various comic ads, so maybe that’s how. I remember reading up until him going home, but not page 7 and the long convo with Galena.

        • Something to look forward to when you get home then. 🙂

(Or maybe while waiting at the airport…)

          • Only if they have computers to borrow – which would be nice since I’m gonna spend hours both in Copenhagen and NY’s airports – but I’ll have something to catch up on when get home.
I’m one of those people who’s only internet connection still only is my stationary computer, not that I don’t wish otherwise *lol*
I’ll borrow my friends laptops while I’m away. I wouldn’t be able to not check up on some comics for two weeks. Just the thought is horrible D:
(Good thing I met them all through comics so they won’t mind :D)

      • davefragments

“allergic to social media” is kind. I was poking around the political websites and one of them uses Disqus to comment.
I saw a post go up and the comment string was just frantic. over a thousand comments in a few minutes. Updates that no one can follow and 9 out of 10 of them bickering with each other. I mean childish real bickering – name-calling garbage and trite political statements about 7 words long. Some of those strings extended 50 to 100 comments of stupid.

On Facebook, late last year ended the three year saga of two doggies with bad stomachs and lots of vet trips. I”m not unsympathetic but THREE YEARS.

I won’t go on. I shouldn’t have done this even.

        • I refuse to go on FaceBook now. I haven’t deleted my account yet but I’m thinking I should. I don’t even go on there to look anymore.

I really like all the social media related to yaoi that I engage in: Twitter, Tumblr, Disqus, etc.

          • davefragments

I solved that problem. My personal account has only family members. (like they post anything at all. I’m like the Dentist of the family with pliers in hand. . .)
My writing ID (this) is only on Facebook for people who publish my short stories or might publish my short stories.
I got burnt by the internet when it was AOL. I think the word “jaded” refers to me. (HAH! what an ego on this one, guys…)

          • I’m following you, Dave (on Twitter). You can hide but you can’t run from me…XD

          • davefragments

            {smiles and winks}

  • TwilightDreamer

whoa! wahoo!! way early update! 😀
Poor Amanda, of course she wouldn’t have wanted to delve so deep into his mind, but there really was no choice I guess…also, seeing it for herself means that there can be no doubt, whereas by words, the truth would’ve been harder to believe (not that I think Amanda would’ve doubted him).
Spooky is such a sweet heart, and he’s not dangerous, even if he fears he is…poor sweety.

  • Sapfo

Alex, Adam, Veronica. Thank you for a page, that even if it didn´t have demons in it, it does still stand out.
That Spooky might have some teeth? Maybe Amanda will finds out soon?

  • In panel 5, I could believe that Spooky is dangerous. He believes he’s dangerous. I wonder if that’s why he was sent to hell, because someone else thought he was dangerous.

But the poor thing, he’s only a boy, first coming into his abilities, I’m sure control is still only just a dream.

  • davefragments

Spooky is angry that Amanda read his mind but he’s talking to her.
    Look at what he says:
    “I AM dangerous” and
“If you knew what I could do”
Both of those things are childish things. He’s got back a little piece of his childhood that was lost for a year in the Hell dimension.
And look careful at his expressions in the last two panels. In the next o last he;s angry. In the last panel, he’s not. He’s afraid this girl knows his secrets, has seen his deeds, and maybe the “things” he did with demons just to stay alive. Amanda can breech his wall of defenses and he doesn’t like that.
    I can’t wait to see where page 20 takes us. . .

    • Klaus

I think he looks more angry in panel 6 than in panel 5. In panel 4, he looks dejected, not angry at all. Judging from his expression in panel 4, he is worried that he might hurt Amanda, which he does not want to do. In panel 6 he looks more like he is threatening her.

  • Alright, I think it’s time for me to go back in bed for a few hours.
I just barely missed out on camping, but came online to a brand new awesome page, and I want to comment so much but can’t seem to concentrate right now. I think travel jitters really have set in ^_^
I’ll be back later today when I’m more coherent, and of course I’ll check in on pages a few times while I’m on vacation, but I won’t be camping for a couple weeks.

    • Safe travels, Danish! 🙂

      • Thank you! So much flying in the next couple of weeks, starting tomorrow (sunday) *_*

    • SofiaT

      Have a great trip!

  • Heh

In todays camp i’ve been in stealth mode, but expect me in the morning babbling about this page, like always.

    • Saxon_Brenton

You mean you’re one of those people who takes time to think out a considered opinion? Gosh. 🙂

      • Heh

I usually do, but this time around i got so immerse in buying time that i ended up saying nothing lol

  • davefragments

I went back a few pages to when FLUKE and SPOOKY sent to the warehouse to bring Kyle his tights and give him a ride home.
Do you remember that SPOOKY check Kyle for residual demons and we all git a good view of Kyle’s name butt (it’s really nice). . .
Well Spooky really was doing what he said he was doing.
Im a way, Spooky was doing what Amanda did right now – looking for dangerous things left behind by the demons in the other dimension.
    Something to think about:

    • Danny

That makes a lot of sense. Spooky would know exactly what to look for, having been there himself, albeit under different circumstances.

  • Saxon_Brenton

I think I may be interpreting the page backwards, in light of the advice that adult!Spooky made to Kyle back in chapter 3 on the cliff top. The bits “They’re right what they said. About me. I am dangerous.” and “If you knew what I can do… Even when I don’t want to…” stick out to me as being at least partly self-recrimination. Especially the very last bit. Only after I went through and read the comments (Danny’s in particular) does it occur to me that they may in part be Spooky putting of a defensive fierce face. Which is not to say that both interpretations can’t have elements of truth to them.

In any case, I’m wondering about the advice that adult!Spooky gave about “don’t buy into into some bullshit conclusions about your fate”. Can be read on multiple levels. Obvious it applies in the present and going into the future of the bonus comic. Teen!Spooky needs to learn trust, but, *that’s what Amanda is working on*. So I’m thinking it may also apply to teen!Spooky’s situation prior to now. So, big questions: Did teen!Spooky exhibit powers before he went to Hell? Did something go badly wrong when they manifested? And who is the ‘they’ in his statement “They’re right what they said”? Is it the cops? Was it the demons who played mind games with him? Was it friends and family who warned him to be careful?

It kind of depends on this: when Spooky says “They’re right what they said. About me.” is it literally the case that other people and/or demons have said this, or is it that Spooky is referring to himself in the third person? Methinks Amanda will continue to have to put effort into untangling this story.

    • Klaus

The cops did call him dangerous, so that is the most likely answer.

    • Danny

That’s a really good point – it certainly could be, in part, self-recrimination, and it would make sense that he might find himself and the powers he was forced to cultivate in Hell to be extremely distasteful at the moment.

  • petros0359

Now clearly due to the nakidity (is that a word?) of Spooky when he was found by the police, they obviously had to rummage around and find him some clothes. We see that he is wearing a police department sweat top. So what does the “BC” stand for in “BCPD”?
    Enquiring minds need to know.

    • Klaus

This has been extensively discussed on previous pages, and the best suggestion so far is Bonus Comic

      • petros0359

Thanks… Musta missed the memo on that one.

  • Yukiness

Thanks for guiding me to a new obsession Alex. Buying Time is an amazing comic

  • I’ll just add my voice to the choir. Buying Time is great! Thanks for the rec.

    • Yay! (Don’t forget to let the creator know — IMHO, he totally doesn’t get enough comments for his great work. 🙂 )

      • Will do! 🙂

      • Saw this comment, looked it up, and.. whoops read the entire thing. Ha! I love it. Thank you!

      • TwoWayStar

Omigod this is so cute he’s adorable I love thiisssssss!

Does this mean you’ll recommend your beloved audience to more great gay sci-fi? *hopeful face* Cause I could do with more!

        • I’m very glad you liked it!

And… I know there’s a lot of good stuff out there, but I’m embarrassed to say this, but it’s so rare that I have time to look at new comics. For this one, I was just going to glance at the first few pages, but then I got hooked and couldn’t stop! 😀

But if you’re looking for some other comics I recommend, be sure to check out my Links page—really good stuff there too.

      • Sapfo

Alex, I had plans to do things today (clean the apartment, wash the car) … there was a lot that were not done, thanks to your recommendation 😀

      • SofiaT

Ha! Looks like we’ve taken over his comments’ section… A flood of TYP fans posting there!

        • It’s very cool. Glad to see the readers here showing support for such an awesome comic. Y’all keep just making me prouder and prouder. 😀

          (Oh, and he’s just updated!)

    • Simba

My stupid smartphone won’t load the pages on Buying time, and I was really hoping to spend my Saturday reading sexy cyberpunk. I am le sad now…

      • Yeah. It wouldn’t work on my iPad, either. I’m betting it’s a Flash thing. 🙁

I just used Chrome on my notebook.

      • 🙁

  • bronakopdin

I love how caring Amanda is on this page and feel so bad about Spooky detesting himself for his powers 🙁

his face is so grumpy everywhere… sure the mind reading might be adding up to that but especially in panel 5 I’d love to jump him and to try convincng him otherwise…

will surely check the Buying Time comic out after so much nice comments about it here 🙂

thanks for the reccomendation Alex 😀

  • petros0359

Thing is… We know he is called Spooky… But in this flashback, no-one has actually used that name yet. …and where did “Jones” come from?

    • SofiaT

The cops said he had “spooky” eyes.
I believe “Spooky Jones” is an assumed identity, the name he chose for himself.

      • petros0359

Hmm… Well this BC is not done yet so maybe there is more to come on that.

    • Klaus

Detective Boxer threw a list of common Chinese family names at him. Maybe that inspired him to choose a common American name.

  • Klaus

What does he mean by what he can do? Is it something supernatural? Or is it acts that we are all physically capable of, but which are psychologically or morally impossible to most people?

  • Amber Rose

Just breaking my usual comment-silence to say: Alex, I have to pack. I’m moving in like, three weeks. Now i’m gonna spend all day reading an adorable webcomic and nothing will get done. :<
I feel like glaring at you and giving you a hug at the same time. Why are comics like these so hard to find? I really can't stand Starfighter and Teahouse or whatever they're called. The writing is just sooooooo awful. D:
You and the guy who writes Sunstone have totally spoiled me with the awesome writing/awesome art combo.

    • I’m really glad that you enjoyed Buying Time, Amber! And I’ll hope you’ll forgive me for the distraction. 😉

And it’s a good question why it’s so hard to get the word out, but for the vast majority of creators it is. I know that it’s taken me a lot of hard work using social media and conventions (and, frankly, paying literally thousands of dollars for advertising over the last few years) to build our audience here.

The truth is, building an audience is an art unto itself, and it’s very daunting for many webcomic creators. That’s one reason why I’m so happy to give a signal boost to a comic like this. If I can help promote work like this, maybe we’ll see more of it. (And, also, by building their audience, maybe I can also put a smile on a creator’s face whose work gave me so much pleasure to read.)

One of the great things about the current state of online media is that there are so many great options out there that can meet a variety of tastes. The tough part is helping niche comics you love to survive and flourish—it’s so easy to start but it’s also just as easy to fail—and that’s why it’s so important to show support in any way you can. I’m really hoping that we see work from this creator for a long time to come. 🙂

      • Just a personal opinion to add to a good post.

One of the things that I think brings fans to TYP is that ALL of the elements are equally top notch. Your writing is excellent in both the micro of a page or panel’s dialog and in the macro of plot and character exposure and evolution over the arc of the books.

In addition, you carefully use supremely talented artists so that facial expressions, environments, design and composition, character & creature designs, all work together to create a singular story that pulls us in. It’s rare to get the whole package working together at such a high level.

I have huge admiration for all the web-comic artists who have the smarts, talent and energy to get it out there. But, if there’s a goal in web-comics over all, I think that trying to get all the elements working together may be a big one.

Just my humble opinion… I like lots of other comics, however I know that is a huge part of what draws ME in so deeply to this particular story.

        • Thank you for the very kind words, Chris. It really is great to have you here. 🙂

  • gregghierholzer

Okay Alex that was just evil. BUYING TIME, this is turning into an addiction. I can afford the time. argh. I like the comic Haven’t seen one interactive like this before, kinda cool.

  • Finzz

Lol Alex didn’t know about Buying Time? At least you found it right? New update tomorrow ^^

  • fujoshifanatic

Thanks for the recommendation Alex! Now that The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal is wrapping up next week, I have a cool new comic to replace it. Interesting story, concept, characters and format–haven’t come across something like it since Masque of the Red Death. 🙂

As for this page, my heart goes out to poor Spooky, throwing up his defenses like a kitten doing the hunch back hiss stance–and just about as effective, for the cute factor at least (does any one ever look threatening while holding a soda pop?). Good thing Amanda sees right through that stuff. Can’t wait to see what the next page brings! Until then…*heads off to read more Buying Time*

    • You’re welcome, fujoshifanatic! And glad you liked the new page too. (And SpookyKitten—LOL.)

  • Alex is NOT kidding. BUYING TIME is fantastically creative and very well executed. In a couple of hours, I’ve been totally hooked and am in chapter 3… I have a feeling not much is getting done today until I’m caught up.

shakes fist and blames Alex for the awesome time wasting tip!!

    • Mwa ha ha. (I thought you might like it, Chris. 😉 )

  • Spooky’s expression in panels 4&5 and Amanda’s expression in panel 6 are all so fantastically damn appealing, I feel my spot (whatever it is) on the Kinsey scale being pulled in opposite directions. It’s a strange sensation. I blame Adam and Veronica for making them both so appealing. Getting ME to lust after Amanda is almost a impossible, so I think TYP has slipped LSD in the water of it’s readers…

    *chris thinks… yeah that’s it!*

Thanks guys for an excellent, if hormonally confusing, page! Now let’s get some naked Kyle back into the mix before I get confused again. *snort*

    Great work.

    • *hugs Chris* Missed you sweetie! Are you back, or are you just peeking in?

      • Thanks doll. Life is a little fraught so may not be to able to yack too much, but am loving the art as always and will pop in when I can. x,C

    • fujoshifanatic

Welcome to the homoflexible side…dip your toe in…the water feels mighty nice…;-P

      • Oh, I agree, it’s all good. I had my days with lovely ladies. I’m afraid though, that I’ve married my dude and I’m happily stuck in gay-ville. I just had to acknowledge that Amanda is my kinda gal! (She pretty much rocks.) I wouldn’t give up the adorbs Spooky to anyone less deserving. 🙂

    • LOL. That’s an awesome compliment, Chris!

(And some day, remind me to tell you about the very confusing feelings I felt while watching The Crying Game for the first time… 😉 )

      • Okay, and then I’ll tell you about crying so hard when leaving BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, that my partner and I heard someone ask (as we walked out of the cineplex)… “Who died?” … srsly. LOL.

  • Adam Irving

Argh, Alex!! I’ve now just spent like the past three hours being sucked into that wonderful, wonderful Buying Time comic. I’m only glad I didn’t start it last night, or I’d have had no sleep. 🙂 Another great page here, and I like the representation of both Spooky and Amanda as their younger selves. I had no doubts, but it’s nice seeing the story being fantastic even without demons and hair-raising action. Loving it so far!

    • So glad you enjoyed Buying Time, Adam. Very happy to spread the word about such a fun comic!

And I’m also glad you’re enjoying the little backstory I have going here. I know it’s a bit subdued compared to some of the wildness of Chapters 1 & 2, so it makes me really happy to hear you’re really enjoying it. Fun for me write, actually. I like exploring the history of these two. 🙂

  • vessto

Ooh, I know I’m evil but actually I wanna see Spooky in his “dangerous” mode. *hides* Thank you for the link to Buying Time, added it to my BL comics bookmarks.:)

  • JozefAL

Does this mean the next page or two makes a certain somebody eat her words and say things that aren’t entirely age-appropriate and call for a change of clothes (and not necessarily in that order)?

    • Omar Cantu

I don’t think it would be in character so far.

  • John

    OK, Buying Time is AWESOME!

Thanks Alex, it’s so cool! The animation is amazing (though I think your art style has him beat)

I would so love to see a collaboration between you two. That would be SO AMAZINGLY COOL!

I’m.. just going to go somewhere quiet to calm down now. If I can since BUYING TIME UPDATES TOMORROW! RAAAGH! Ican’twaitforittoupdate :DDDDD

    • LOL. I’m really glad you liked it!

And a collaboration might indeed be fun. We’ll see if the stars ever align that way. 😉

      • John

        Ouiji board… check

        I’ll get right on that!

  • bronakopdin

I’ve read the whole Buying Time comic before leaving for my part-time job today and nearly came in late because I wanted to finsih it so bad!!!

Really a nice story! I love the setting as much as I hate it! Thanks again for the recomandation, Alex 🙂

    • Yay! Glad to hear you liked it! I’m glad to give such a fun comic a little signal boost. 🙂

  • Welcome, Liska! Glad to have you join us! I look forward to seeing you here—and over at BT! 🙂

    • Liska

Thanks Sofia & Alex! 😀 Buying time updates once a week, on Sundays. Thank you for letting me know about TYP’s update schedule, too!

      • SofiaT

No prob! (And YAY! That means Buying Time update today!)

Btw, if you’d like to be able to comment without having your posts stuck in moderation queue, you can confirm your email with Disqus and they’ll be posted automatically 🙂

        • I’d love too, but I can’t figure out how to do it 😡 Maybe as a technophone, i’ll figure it out eventually! and Indeed- tomorrow (got a few hours left, though! I think we may be in different time zones?)

          • SofiaT

If you go to your Disqus dashboard and click on your account settings, underneath where you’ve entered your email address will be a prompt for you to verify it. You can take it from there 🙂

And yes, I’m in Sydney so it’s already Sunday morning for me -the creator of Buying Time is in Canada, right? That means by the time I finish watching The Lego Movie this afternoon, a new page will be up 😀

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

One step closer …….waiting til midweek to find out more about what Spooky “Can do”…..other than ripping the heads off poor unsuspecting demons!

  • Klaus

Much as I would understand if the artist team took a vacation in July, August 2nd is a Saturday.

  • SofiaT

Welcome to the fandom, Liska! 🙂

I’ve been converted into a Buying Time fan too!
Can you tell me when it updates?! I’m looking forward to more of it!

TYP updates late Friday nights for the Pacific Time Zone (Saturday morning or afternoon if you’re in Europe or Australia) and Tuesday nights (Wed/day for the rest of the world) when we got bonus pages -which is always.

  • Beatrix Muircastle

ok if Spooky gave me that look in panel 5 I’d shrink. That woman has ovaries of steel.

  • Question! My best friend and I publish a comic that’s going to be introducing a lot more conversation about sexual fluidity soon. I’d love to start going to events that talk about this. What do you recommend, as far as conventions are concerned?

  • Logical Test Subject

I will second the plug and awesomeness of Buying Time. great comic.

  • Xalun K

Poor Spooky. Still just wanna squeeze his cheeks, though.

Sorry I haven’t been around, guys. My husband’s dad died recently and it’s kind of been hell. Miss y’all though.

    • *hugs* I am sorry for your loss. We miss having you around too.

    • I’m so sorry to hear that. My condolences.

    • Klaus

I am sorry to hear it.

  • Jack

What a cute comic! Everyone in Buying Time is just adorable! Thanks for the recommendation!

  • Alex, did you notice that the PERFECT song for Kyle just WON the Eurovision Song Contest?

and a sidenote: the Song received even 5 Points from Russia. Assuming that the jury wouldn’t dare to vote for Conchita Wurst, this means that she has to be top 3 in Televoting to get those points!!!

    • Klaus

YES! I can see Kyle on that stage. Both the text and the flame themed light show is just right for him.

  • Klaus

I can’t help it Alex’ plug for Buying Time above makes me think of Kenny Everett

  • I just want to wish all the mothers (including those who wish to be and maybe cannot be) out there a Happy Mother’s Day.

  • b3nc0

Sorry, I didn’t read much comments, was stuck in Buying Time & didn’t do much more besides celebrating Mother’s Day, be back later today to try and socialise?

  • Kendall

Holy carp, Buying Time is incredible. Thanks, Alex, for pointing us in that direction. I read it all tonight and it’s going into my feed…. 😀

    • Glad you liked it! Yep, very happy to give it a signal boost! 🙂

  • petros0359

    :: still fretting about his flip-flops ::
    Just sayin.

    • petros0359

Oh… And in panel 5, did Spooky just turn and look directly at the “fourth wall”… aka – us?

  • Gergana Maltchanova

Hi, guys, have you seen (you probably have) The Light Stream Chronicles? Buying Time (kind of) reminds me of the bleak future, exposed there. Otherwise (yeah, if you could ignore the unsettling message from a supposed future), totally awesome.
Yet another page here (TYP), that is filled with hidden promises. What is Spooks capable of? Will helping him be an easy task?
Have fun tomorrow! And a nice day now 🙂

  • Madock345

I’m back! I’ve missed the last two weeks or so, but Finals are over so I can finally return to important things, like TYP.

Looking back over them, I like these pages a lot. Lots of striking images, transitions that are jarring in just the right way.

That second to last panel of spooky on this page is especially powerful, lots of emotion, it’s one of those that actually manages to make it feel like he’s looking at me.

Also, one of the banner ads has some highly explicit imagery, the one for It doesn’t bother me, but I know Alex didn’t want that kind of thing in the comic, so he should know if it’s showing up in the ads.

    • Thank you, Madock. Glad to have you back and glad you’re enjoying the new pages. 🙂

And which banner are you seeing that ad on? Let me know which one and I’ll look into it.

      • Stig Hemmer

I am not Madock, but I see the same ad. Below the author’s notes there are three square PW ads. The first of these is highly explict.

      • Hey gay man here. Let me just say that I’ve read Dale Lazarov’s work. Yes it is very explicit. But, unlike most “porn” it is VERY respectful. The men are always portrayed joyously and “Gay” is a positive thing in his work and love is almost always a major turning point in his portrayal of gay sexuality.

I do understand, if that’s not someone’s preference, but his work is VERY tasteful and highly respectful and I could only wish that other authors of m/m romance and porn were half as decent and respectful to men and homosexuality as he is.

No worries, but I just wanted to put it out there that Dale Lazarov is much kinder and loving in his portrayal of gay men than plenty of Yaoi that I’ve discovered, which IMHO often doesn’t seem to ‘like’ men much at all.

        • Dale has been advertising here for some time and I’m happy to spread the word about his work. Don’t worry. That’s not going to change. At least, not because of anything I do. 🙂

But I have limited my ad box ratings to no more than NSFW (and SFW for the top leaderboard ads.) Recently, Project Wonderful created an Adult rating and now, thinking about it, I do recall deciding to try that new rating out on those small little ads just to see what that would be like and if it would boost bid rates.

Now I know. It does boost the bid range a bit. But if it’s calling this much attention to itself, then I should probably just change it back to “NSFW.” That’s plenty spicy and Dale has lots of ads that meet that criteria so it certainly wouldn’t be locking him out or anything.

  • Oooh, that would be pretty interesting. 🙂

  • jreed3842

Omg! Thanks for telling us about Buying Time. I feel in love with that comic! The characters are amazing, I just fell in love with Vinnie!
My only complaint comes from my slow internet… Since the comic is animated and my internet is sooo slow it just takes FOREVER for it to load. But, it’s great!

    • Happy to spread the word. Really glad to hear you enjoyed it! 😀

  • Forgive a moment of Monday mush, but I just got a chance to finish BUYING TIME. So, I started thinking about how much I’ve come to count on TYP and love it in general… and then how much I enjoyed my swim in BUYING TIME and then, just generally, how many great web-comics I’ve started reading simply because this group shares great links. Like Danish and Doki… the librarians of web-comic Alexandria. Well…….

Thank you all. Good art just makes life better, and I’m very appreciative of all the sharing that happens around here.

Major karma points for all!! Very much appreciated.

Now, @alexwoolfson:disqus, you gotta admit BUYING TIME does a very tasteful (no jokes please) display of the penis.

    *chris throws hands up*

Hey, I’m only pointing this out to say that, if you (Alex) should wish to present, say, a Kyle or Spooky penis in such an equally tasty erm… tasteful manner, well I’m sure your readership would not be negatively impacted. It’s all about romance, remember? “Super Villain, Super Hero… It’s complicated?” Hey, I’m just reminding you about the very sophisticated mature readership you have here. I’m sure no one would mind……… RIGHT GUYS? 🙂

    *snort* (I don’t think he’s buying it……..) 🙂

    • Glad to hear you enjoyed Buying Time, Christopher. I thought you might!

And heh, I do think he did a good job with showing penis in that, too. Now, I’ve talked before why you’re not likely to see that on the production pages here, but there are those Kickstarter rewards coming up. And IIRC, some are very… informative. I don’t think our sophisticated, mature readership will be disappointed… 😉

      • Thanks Alex… I do like how they handled the penis, but I hope everyone knows I’m just teasing… I think the choices you make for TYP are just great, and I’m not anxious for those Kickstarter awards at all… no, not at all … (Lie detector says no). Awww……

        • Chris….in my next life I want to be reborn as a cat that you end up owning.

        • Jay Demetrick

I dunno… the penises could have used a bit more handling… Whoops! Um… never mind…

          • So true. I’ve never met one that didn’t need “a bit more handling” … oh well. 🙂

“If wishes were horses, we’d all own a ranch.”

        • Adam Black

“I do like how they handled the penis”

( I am quite particular myself, all palm and I expect the same ) . Never any nails or barbed wire. )

and that’s what every man, and woman ( one should hope ) wants to hear.

Its unfortunate you didnt write this a day before.

It would have a lovely addiction to Mother’s Day card

          • I love the deep meaning Hallmark holidays have for you. Makes me warm and fuzzy. Heh.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Good try, Chris, but it looks like you’ll have to stick to the fan art and/or the print volumes of TYP if you want exposed weenies 🙂
However, I will second the thanks for the number of new webcomics that I’ve started reading because of recommendations placed here, both by Alex and other TYP readers.

  • Oh Hell

Just an FYI that there is only six days left in their Kickstarter… it seems there are lotsa hells out there… you might wanna check. 🙂

  • Hours

Just read every available page of Buying Time like a maniac. Thanks for the awesome recommendation Alex. 🙂

  • SofiaT

TJ and Amal just finished and now I’m sad. 🙁
I blame Alex because I found that comic through his links.

Quick! I need a fix! Is it Wed/day yet???

    • fujoshifanatic

I’m totally with you; one of the few comics out there (besides this one) that combines beautiful art with expert storytelling, and I’m so sad to have it come to an end. Hopefully the creator will start another one soon. :-

      • SofiaT

        Yeah, me too. 🙁
You know, I don’t go looking for BL comics, I just like comics with good storytelling and hopefully good art too, but some of the best comics I now have bookmarked & follow religiously have turned out to be some sort of BL genre (which is natural, considering I found out about them either through Alex’s links or people here discussing them).

TJ & Amal was probably my favorite non-Alex comic. *sigh*

    • Madock345

Oooh, I remember reading that comic when it first started, I think it was one of the ones that got unintentionally forgotten when my computer broke and I lost all my favorites. It’s over? That’s sad, but I’m glad I heard so I can go marathon it.

  • petros0359

ZOMG!! Did someone just say “penis” on the interwebs? :: faint ::
Are you even allowed to say “penis” on the interwebs? :: faints again ::

    • Oh dear petros0359, I don’t want you upset. Here, take a look at some alternates and feel free to select the word that feels right to you. Good luck.

      • Sapfo

I am flabbergasted. So many words @_@

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Who’s up for some camping?

    • I am here, but also trying to catch up on tumbler…..3-4 people that I follow decided to post a bunch of stuff at the same time…..

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Hiya! No problem!

        • Not sure if I should admit just how much that last one I reblogged made me laugh…..

          • Starrwinter

I’ll set up camp here instead 😉

          • stickfigurefairytales

          • lol, may or may not be a longer wait Starr! I am really hoping she will update tonight!

          • stickfigurefairytales

What else are you guys waiting on? (Starfighter?)

          • Starrwinter

            Yes…. dear goodness yes… *cries*

          • stickfigurefairytales

It is very cliffhanger-y right now, isn’t it?

          • Starrwinter

Very much + all the back-story is coming out of the wood works now (ruining each fan fic with each new page) XD

          • She promised us an update when she got back from the con…she is back……she should be updating….

          • Starrwinter

Unless the muse-bug isn’t biting… which happens + everyone needs a break. I’m sure planning the KS stuff and Teafighter tour is a TON of work!

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That is true.

          • *cries* You had to go and mention that thing I have no money for and am extremely jealous of those that end up going!!!

          • Starrwinter

You’re not the only one…. 🙁 I’ve been down/angry the past couple days and I think it’s just a cold / allergies but I think my heart broke and is slowly mending over not being able to go…

          • I soooo would love to go to Japan with a group of fanpeoples…..

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yeah, me too…

          • Starrwinter

Even though… I’m seeing Lady Gaga, going to CA for YaoiCon and hopefully to the Launch party in NY next year… all I can think about is that darn Japan trip :X

          • If you do make it to the launch party, you HAVE to give her a hug from me!

          • Starrwinter

That I will do! 🙂 I’m really thinking I can go, just as long as it isn’t the last week of Feb/first week of March *fingers crossed*

          • Starrwinter

It at least gives me more time to work on my Lady Gaga concert outfit *jumps up and down*

      • Starrwinter

Those posts are gold, Doki! 😉

    • Sapfo

I don´t want to camp, I want to sleep. Sticky can you call my boss and tell her I have to sleep today. >_<

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Sure, what’s the number?

        • Sapfo

that would mean waking up….. I will not fall in that trap

      • Morning Sapfo! If you are sleepy I guess that makes it easier for the rest of us to get the virgin?

        • Sapfo

          Did someone say Virgin?

          • It’s okay Sapfo, go back to sleep. I will take good care of him. ^_^

          • Sapfo

Hmm, I don´t trust you two. And I think there might be other virgin hunters here.
            AJ, are you here yet?

          • stickfigurefairytales

            I haven’t seen her yet.

          • I’m a ninja mod!

          • I’m here. Ducking in and out. Had to make bread. Then had to feed my dogs, and now I get to make dinner.

            I hate running late.

          • Sapfo

            I knew it!
… well I can not blam you. You look so cute and innocent with your red cape…. even if you are a virginhunter that is.
(Run AJ, you will make it all in time. I belive in you)

          • I’m accidentally lucky, that’s all. 😀

          • Sapfo

I am suspicious. Got an eye on you dear ^_^

          • Ha! Well that day dinner was already cooked.

          • Sapfo

And I am eating breakfast. This might be the best day ever

          • we shall see!

          • Sapfo

I belive in this day clap, clap

          • Clap Clap Clap

          • Sapfo

Clap, clap….. AJ, I did something today. <.<

          • Should I be concerned?

          • Sapfo

          • I expect Pictures or it didn’t happen.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Hi AJ!

          • Hi Stick!

          • stickfigurefairytales

Shh…no one said anything…go back to sleep.

      • Did you watch too much SnK? 😉

        • Sapfo

Oh no, I was done with that Monday.
No I just could not sleep between 1 and 3 this night.

        • Sapfo

I only have the Ova and chibi episods left. Saving them for the weekend ^_^

    • jreed3842

*grabs chocolate, marshmallows, and gram crackers* Yay camping!

  • Chibi

hey guys heres a great comic that is having a kickstarter

    • Sapfo

Do you know if they ship international?

      • Chibi

they do if out of the US or canada I believe it said to add like $10 to the pledge

      • Chibi

If you live OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA please include
an extra $10 in your donation to offset shipping costs. All parcels will be
sent Canada Post Expedited, or International Small Packet Air as the
        destination requires

        that is what it says

        • Sapfo

Thank you, I been looking up and down that page for a week and could not find it.

          • Chibi

yeah easier to just use ctrl f and search 10 and find where it mentions $10

          • Sapfo

But then you have to know that it is 10 and not 25 xD

          • Chibi

            lol true

what’s nice that even if it isn’t fulfilled completely we will stick get the just we pledged for this is what they said on their websit

“What happens if you don’t meet your goal in time?”
            A number of things:
            1) 9% of the total earned will be taken by IndieGoGo as a sort of ‘punishment’ for not reaching my goal in time.
(if the goal is reached or exceeded, they only charge 4%, meaning more of the funds go tot he actual project itself!)
I make cut backs, and am not able to put the funds fully into practise
as I had budgeted for, which hampers the running of the website, and
productivity, but DOES NOT prevent printing.
            3) I print as many books
as the funds raised allow, but at the very minimum means EVERY
incentive is filled. That way every person who helped pitch in will get
everything promised to them from their incentive level, and if there is
any funds left over, I will print extra books that will go up in the
Shop. If there are no books left over, then copies will only be printed
on print-on-demand basis, in which pricing will vary on your region.

  • For those that read PoC, it updated…I am not all that happy with Lee…

    • Uh oh… *goes to look*

    • *screams!!!* I agree with the above statement…

    • fujoshifanatic

I don’t know about being mad at Lee; there was no way he could have broken the news without it going over in a less than ideal way. :-

      • I didn’t say I was mad at him, I said I was “not all that happy with him”. He could have at least had the decency to pretend to have mixed feelings over it….

He could have approached Frank in a more subdued manner and said that he got the opportunity in New York, but he was unsure whether or not he should go and then they could have discussed things properly between them.

        • fujoshifanatic

I can see that. As we’ve seen before, tact was not exactly his strong suit. Still, I don’t necessarily fault him for being happy about his news, and maybe hoping Frank would be a little happy, despite the circumstances. I just feel bad fro the both of them over the whole situation. :-

My Nephew’s daughter is having a Sweet 16 STEAMPUNK B-day party and I had to find a gift. She does Roller Derby too and I found (After much arduous searching the internet and Amazon, a notebook with a victorian boot on a victorian roller skate with a rose on top of the boot. IT works.

Then the AC man told me that I needed a new thermostat and I had to pay for it.

    • Do you know if she is into any Steamppunk bands? Because I know a really good one. ^_^

      • davefragments

Probably. but think on this – Do Bachelor Uncles ever know the minds of 16 year old girls? I also bought a gift certificate

        • Heh..^_^….that depends on if you are also into steampunk? (I take it you are not though…) But I met this really great steampunk band at Tsubasacon 2010. My favorite song is the only one written and composed by the Bassist. ^_^ Their most recent album is called The Time Traveler’s Constant.

I wonder if Spooky gets reunited with his family? I get a real ‘big sister/little bro’ vibe between these two. I wonder if Spooky ends up going home with Amanda and her mother? I could see Amanda helping him hone his powers into a positive force.
