The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Bonus Comic One—Page 18

263 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Bonus Comic One—Page 18

Happy birthday, Spooky.

We have new Fan Art from Scarlet Savage. It’s a pin-up of Spooky from more pleasant (and, as it turns out, more shirtless) days. Do check it out!

(Oh, and just for the Word-of-God record, the demons on this page didn’t try to “mess with Spooky’s head” with sex and love, either. They have other plans for Spooky.)

The forty-third bonus page in a row! And you yet again tipped over the target on the donation bar below. That means that, in addition to our regular Saturday updates, and bonus pages on Wednesday, May 14th (page 20!), Wednesday, May 21st (page 22), Wednesday, May 28th (page 25!), Wednesday, June 4th (page 27!), Wednesday, June 11th, and Wednesday, June 18th, there will now be an addition bonus page on Wednesday, June 25th! You all are TOTALLY AWESOME!

Special thanks go out to long-time supporter Arshad A. (who makes their fourth generous donation to The Young Protectors!) for their generous donation over the last few days!

Supehero-strength hugs go out to long-time super-friend Stephanie C. for their amazingly generous $50 donation, their thirtieth (!) super-generous donation to this comic!

And ZOMG!, tremendously grateful bows and warm and fuzzy bear hugs go out to long-time mega-friend Christopher D. for their stunningly generous $125 donation, their sixty-seventh stunningly generous donation to this comic! You RULE, Christopher!

Thank you all so much for your generous support!

So! This page is completely free from dialogue. What’s up with that?! Did these monsters actually scare that Alex guy away from his keyboard?

And I have so many other burning questions! Like, what exact term should we, as readers, be using to describe 13-year-old Spooky’s body-fat content — “chubby” or “pudgy”? What do all these demons really want? And most importantly, is any one of them going to help him get his flip-flops back?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • They look a little hungry!

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hey, did you win?

    • Wohoo, Doki. You got one 🙂
I was surprised to only see your comment pop up when I refreshed. I’ve been away from camping for the last hour because of various travel forms. So close to getting it anyway xD

      • stickfigurefairytales

Your army is already quite formidable as is.

        • I am now up to 4 ^_^

          • stickfigurefairytales

      • heh, actually I checked this page right after seeing @davefragments:disqus comment on the previous page asking about where page 18 has gone!

        So thank you dave!!!

        • davefragments

I checked too and I must have missed it by seconds.

          • ….I also had the Phantom on my side….

          • The Phantom Menace? Sorry, star wars nerd, lol.

          • The Phantom of the Opera ^_^

          • Also quite good. I like Andrew Lloyd Weber almost as much as I like George Lucas.

          • davefragments

            Opera, opera, opera.
My favorite is TOSCA and in it is
            E Lucevan Le Stelle

          • b3nc0

Thank you for the link to Placindo Domingo instead of Pavaroti! Always thought he sang with more feelings than Lucciano…

          • Michael Crawford is the best phantom…..OMG….his voice….*le sigh*

          • Aww, you’re making me miss all my musical theatre major friends from college. I loved listening to them discuss the best singers. Also hearing them tear apart the college’s performance of Rent. lol

Do you have a musical background?

          • I was in Band from 6-11th grade. I watched old musicals with my Grandmother, and I am a fan of the theater (I just haven’t been able to see much in person).

          • That’s awesome, I was only in Orchestra from 4-7th grade (cello, my absolute favorite). Sorry to hear about the musicals though. Whenever you get a chance to go to a big city, go see one. Obviously New York is the best place. But I’ve seen a lot of musicals in Chicago.

          • On a band trip to NY I got to see STOMP (not quite sure if that counts)… of their members, looked almost like an identical twin to one of our percussionists. I have seen some plays and things through school trips…(though despite the Barter’s good reputation, I have yet to be impressed.)

          • davefragments

Live onstage counts. There is something magical about a well acted piece on stage happening right before your eyes. All the trickery and deceit that is “play acting” becomes real and that is something special. I’ve seem a few musicals in NYC my time.

          • Yeah, and I have found out that once a “band geek” always a “band geek”. In college I was supposed to pick up a friend and her boyfriend to go play D&D and she just happened to be watching Drumeline ……I somehow got sucked in to watching it instead of getting them to come along and we were late. >.<

          • davefragments

I took lessons on electric organ from 8 years old until 18, I play bagpipe (lots of fun) in the marching band, and at 16 when I heard Mahler’s 2nd symphony I became a classical music freak forever.

          • OMG ! You play the bagpipe!!! I LOVE bagpipes!!! I could listen to them all day!

I saw cats on vhs/dvd and ever since I have loved singing the phrase “magical mystical Mister Mistoffelees”.

          • b3nc0

Cello’s been obsessing me since The Witches of Eastwick ♥

  • The horrors he faced ;_;

  • SofiaT

I’m thinking Lord of The Rings… Where is the light Galadriel gave him???

    • stickfigurefairytales

He didn’t get to open his presents yet!

    • He actually might just be better off with Shelob herself. Spiders eat ants, right? That or Sting. In my opinion, there’s no problem that sword can’t solve.

      • SofiaT

I would settle for Hermione’s or Harry’s wand!

  • davefragments

Now that would be a birthday party in Hell

  • stickfigurefairytales

Oh shit. Also: cake of dramatic symbolism!

    • Saxon_Brenton

The dramtic symbolism is the only thing keeping me from nitpicking: This particular part of hell seems to consist of a Ditko-space of infinite tree-branch type paths spanning space – so the cake should have fallen off just like the flip-flop rather than falling to the ‘ground’ and looking all sad and dramatically significant.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Why couldn’t it have just hit one of the tree branches?

        • Saxon_Brenton

In order for it to be visually obvious on the page that these are tree-branch type paths they need to relatively narrow, and this is indeed the way they are depicted. From that I keep expecting they to have very little ‘flat ground’ and for the odds to be that almost anything to ‘roll off’. Of course by that logic Spooky should have obvious trouble keeping his balance, so that may just me overthinking things again.

          • b3nc0

As I see it, the cake fell while Spooky-to-be had both feet on the ‘ground’ (rock, mud or branch…) now his flip-flops are falling while he’s being held above a hole of some sort

    • That poor cake.

  • Ack!!

    • b3nc0

      • Ack!

        • b3nc0

          Sorry about that oTL

          • No apologies. I was just screaming with you! 🙂

            Eek! Ack! Arrg!

  • Simba

I wish I didn’t find chubby baby Spooky so adorable, because seeing him is directly related to him being scared witless on the worst day ever…. Its very conflicting. :/

  • stickfigurefairytales

See? The poor kid lost his flip-flops already. They are not good shoes to be wearing when you unexpectedly wind up in hell.

  • Flip flops go down the hole! It’s probably for the best. They weren’t very practical attire for walking around hell.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Still, even flip flops would be better than nothing.

      • Quite true. Though I’m kinda worried about that shirt as well. It can’t be a good thing walking around hell half naked. I mean, it’s not like he’s in danger of catching a cold probably, but it looks like he needs all the protective gear he can get.

        • stickfigurefairytales

          I know – poor baby!

        • davefragments

I think that t-shirt is now a vest. Look close. It’s already ripped.

  • The poor cake.

    • Agreed, it looked delicious. Though it’s probably what attracted the ant in the first place. They do love sweet things. And unfortunately spooky is just too sweet for his own good.

      • I didn’t think of that. It must’ve been the cake that attracted them!

  • Emiko

Man… as creepy and awful as this scene is to witness, that artwork is gorgeous…

  • Toli Bera

Note to self: Next time, probably, don’t host the b-day party in the radioactive ant colony.

  • My compliments to Adam for his creativity in monsters.
.. but poor Spooky who faces them.
Damn fast he’s losing his clothes and shoes. Not the way anyone would like to undress.

    • David Welbourn

mmhm. I do believe Spooky is going to be starkers rather quickly yes. (Quickly for him. It may take several pages of monsters tearing the clothing off of Spooky’s helpless body before he’s completely nude.)

Then there’s four ways I can see the story going from there:
      1) Spider-monster swallows Spooky whole. No chewing.
      2) Spider-monster cocoons Spooky into webby bondage.
      3) The camera turns to a new demon, Hunkasaurus Tex, guest drawn by Tom of Finland, to laugh at Spooky’s helplessness.
      4) Spooky rudely interrupts the flashback sequence before Amanda can “see” too much.

      • Klaus

I would not consider option 4 rude at all.

      • ReineVictoria

        5) A humanoid looking demon turns up to ‘rescue’ Spooky. Alex’ WoG-remark (“these demons do not mess with sex and love”) goes suddenly absent.

  • YangYueLan

    Noooo! Not the flip-flops!

  • Loneliestoflulabies

So did they come out of nowhere or did he walk into somewhere? Manifestation of powers or nah

  • And that was his favorite shirt too.

    • davefragments

There the ugliest PJ’s Ive ever seen. Must have been a “grandma” buy.

      • It might’ve been the most comfortable shirt in the world.

        • stickfigurefairytales

Now I’m extra sad that he’s going to lose it!

          • I know. It’s so hard to find a good comfy shirt.

      • I don’t know about you, but at 13 my sense of fashion was non-existent. I just wore whatever was comfortable. In fact, I probably wore something a lot like that to school once.

        • davefragments

I had to wear shirt and tie to school.

and as for those PJ’s —
          Not in my coffin, even
          wink, wink

          • Only quality worm food to be buried in for you? lol

  • Sapfo

    Noooo, not the flip-flops! -_-

  • The more I look at this page, the more I could use a snuggle pillow right about now.

If we get to see more from hell on the next page, I’m actually at the point where I hope what ever king rules THIS part of it shows up to ‘collect’ Spooky .. if Spooky doesn’t get lose on his own and are able to run, for the lack of a non pun, like he had monsters at his heels >.<

And yet, if it switch back to them in the interogation room, I hope we get told how this scene ended. As much as I hate watching Spooky in hell, the unknown in how he got away here would be the worst unanswered detail right now.

  • Khun David

    Kyle… Lust
    Spooky… Gluttony
Which of the other 7 deadly sins do the other Young Protectors represent?

    • Klaus

Sloth must be the one not represented.

  • These monsters would scare me away from the keyboard! They’re a mix of Greek Myth and the bugs from Starship Trooper (the movie).

    So again I say: ACK!!!

  • davefragments

I have to go sleep. night all.

    don’t let the spiders bite,
    he he he he he

    • David Welbourn

Y’know, I found the largest centipede high up on the wall above my headboard earlier today. Not at all where I want to find a centipede. (And then an online friend of mine promptly suggested the ‘pede had laid its eggs in my ear. Such a nice friend.)

      • davefragments

You have no clue how crazy that would make me. utter screaming total goofball time. And I’m worse with a fly swatter – things break around me. It’s totally irrational but I’ve learned to control it.

  • silibub

When my brother was that age and approximately that size, his clothes labels said “husky.” Which conjures images of puppies, and now this page and young Spooky’s vulnerable tummy seem more pathos-ridden than ever. Soft flesh and spiky, spiny, pointy-fanged demons are not a good combo (although they provide a nice visual contrast).

  • Ren Robles

SO glad I’m seeing this in the morning (well, afternoon, it’s 2.30pm here in Singapore) and in broad daylight, instead of just before going to bed… o_O

  • Klaus

I think I know the answer to Alex’ last question.

  • Finooola

    Cool monster.

  • Michael

I feel bad for him, of course, but puppy-fat Spooks is kind of cute.

  • jreed3842

Late, as usual, to the page… But it’s a very good one. No dialogue is even needed!
Also… Scarlet Savage, that fan art is very nice! I think everyone needs a bit more shirtless Spooky in their lives.

  • Can I just remark that these look less like demons and more like the kind of bugs you find in your carpets. A bit distorted by fear, maybe, but quite buggy still.

    • Elin Gregory

Maybe hell is populated by the things one fears most?

  • Mersharr

Aww, no sex and love with these hotties?

I think chubby does not fit lil Spooky at all. It needs more than that to be chubby. Pudgy sounds cute.

  • I’m confused as to why the demons didn’t just eat him or something? Hm, can’t wait to find out what exactly went on while he was there (I mean, the reason he /wasn’t/ eaten or something.) ^^

  • bronakopdin

if this continues Spooky will be naked soon enough >_>’

and the cake… hush you ant-ies, go for the cake instead, it’s way more delicious!

    (or well, is it?)

  • Amber Tomaszewski

    Poor Spooky Q.Q

  • SofiaT

Seeing this page, and remembering this page, I wonder how Spooky went from being the terrified boy (chubby, pudgy or otherwise) we see here, to being so non-nonchalant about demons.

Was it his stay there that empowered him that much or something that happened after his return to our dimension? And what part did Amanda play in that transformation?

    • fujoshifanatic

I think discovering his ability to summon demons and make them do his bidding might have helped him in part to get over the trauma of his time in Hell (talk about finding a “cathartic breakthrough to conquering your demons!”). I would imagine finding out you have that super power would be better than at least a few years’ worth of therapy, and for Spooky, way more useful, and maybe fun?

      • SofiaT

Yes, but how did he find out? Was it while he was in Hell? And who taught him? Is it possible that one of those demons that tried to “mess with his head with sex and love” tutored him, in an effort to bring him over to the dark side?

And judging by how in shock he seemed to be when the cops found him, walking around with that demon head, I’d say the “nonchalance” part came after his escape, even if the power came before… Just because we have the inner strength to overcome our fears, it doesn’t mean we’re aware of that strength from the start. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of time, or even someone to make us see that we hold the key to our own mental well-being.

        • Saxon_Brenton

Yeah, I’d have to agree with that reasoning. In fact, considering how withdrawn Spooky was when Amanda came in, I’m now wondering who it was that decapitated the demon whose head was holding when he was found by the cops. Was it Spooky, in a brief and impulsive fit of rage? Or another demon, allowing Spooky to escape during the ensuing confusion?

        • fujoshifanatic

I would agree with you that the discovery came after he escaped; I think maybe his powers manifested in a burst of emotion of some kind, which a) caused that demon to lose its head and b) caused him to will himself out of Hell somehow. Kind of like Dorothy and her red shoes in Oz; she had the power to get herself home the whole time (the shoes were just a focusing mechanism), only instead of a Good Witch helping him focus his power, perhaps it was a year of pent-up fear and torment helping him to focus his innate powers into a single thought of GET. ME. OUTTA. HERE!!!

Then, after the fact, maybe Amanda helps him figure out what happened, what his powers are, and how he can use them for good. She would be the most likely candidate for this, considering her powers of telepathy and mind suggestion. These are just my guesses, but they seem most logical to me.

          • SofiaT

These are very good guesses and worth considering.
I just want to make clear that the inner strength I’m talking about is not the same as the power to summon or command demons (whenever that power was discovered and/or nurtured).

I was talking about the determination to get over and own his fears (because petrifying fear is what we witness on this page), something he seems to have done extremely well, considering that scene in the interlude.

          • fujoshifanatic

Oh yes, I totally get that you were talking about this. That why I laid out my guess as to the process by which he came to discover his inner strength (among other things), with (I think) Amanda’s help. He just has a little advantage of discovering he could literally own his fears with some cool ass powers (would that we all could, you know?). 🙂

  • Mary Klemzak

Happy birthday! Someone order demons and a free trip to Hell?!? Just like every teenage boy needs.

He’s such a sweetie! Not that fat. I was fatter. Still am. Oh well.

If anything, he’s fluffy or husky. Please refer to Gabriel Iglasias’ 5-6 levels of fat. I can post a link but just look him up on YouTube. He’s hilarious and mostly clean.

Will be interesting to see how he discovered he can control these uglies. Just gotta get over, y’know, the being scared shitless part.

  • fujoshifanatic

Oh my gosh, poor Spooky! I think it’s best he lost the cake; judging from his current circumstance, if he had already eaten it, he would have lost it anyway, and…you know, I’m not going to finish that.

I will just say that this is a frighteningly beautiful page, that I am in fearful anticipation of the next page, and that I am going with my previous descriptor for current Spooky to describe young Spooky’s physical makeup. Cuddly is the perfect word for Spooky’s body and how I feel about it, and I so wish that he was being cuddled right now than what is happening on this page. His little tummy is much more deserving of a gentle rub and poke Pilsbury Dough Boy-style than what that horrid demon is doing to it now. 🙁

  • Nate

  • Nate

Oh, and I think the best term to describe the Spooklet is “pleasantly cuddly”.

    • Jac

      “Spooklet” Ohh, that’s so precious

  • thejazband

    Oh wow.

I reach for my phone Wednesday mornings from bed and hit the shortcut for Young Protectors. When this is the first thing you see when waking up…

Fearsome page, guys! I’d personally imagined hell to be a lot redder (Kyle’s hell struck a chord with my imagination), but I’m open to the idea of multiple, personalised hells, tailored to everyone’s specific horrors and fears.

    • fujoshifanatic

Yeah, Kyle’s Hell was pretty bad, but this Hell…it does some very, very bad things to my psyche, especially the bug things in the foreground and background. I can deal with almost anything else other than bugs and their demonic iterations. *shivers*

      • SofiaT

I think there’s a hierarchy in demons and these are the lesser kind… Even though they look more disgusting and gruesome than Laampros, I’ll take them over him any day!

I don’t know how Spooky managed to escape these “little” fellows, but I have a feeling if it was Laampros who was set on eating him, getting away would have been much, much harder.

        • fujoshifanatic

Oh, I’m sure! These demons would simply trigger my innate bug phobia, and oddly enough it would be easier in my mind to “react” to them–my lizard brain would trigger the flight or fight response and I would try to get out of the situation somehow. But to encounter a sentient, omnipotent, manifestation of pure evil such as Laampros? I don’t even think my brain can wrap itself around a situation like that. While Kyle’s version of Hell’s surroundings might not be as frightening to me as Spooky’s situation, the beings in Kyle’s Hell are another story altogether.

          • SofiaT

These guys make my skin crawl too… *bbbrrrrrrr*

I’m just thinking that the more “subtle” kind of evil, the sentient, purposeful kind, is even more dangerous because it seems less repelling -and in some cases even appealing-, not in spite of it. These bugs must be relatively harmless if you consider that the more alluring evil is, the more powerful it is.

And before Team Pitchfork grabs that statement and starts partying with it, no, I’m not talking about Duncan here. 😛

I’m talking about whatever creatures Spooky is gonna encounter next. The worst is yet to come :0/

      • thejazband

That’s exactly it! Kyle and Spooky’s respective hells do nothing to my psyche, because my personal hell would be radically different.

I love Sofia’s idea of demon hierarchy, it reminds me of The Demonata series by Darren Shan. It’d be great to do a proper spin-off, but the scope is huge. Also, Spooky being able to summon demons would suggest he’s higher up the hierarchy, so the next few pages will be very interesting.

      • Yeah, I’ve got a kind of bug phobia too. Nothing else really scares me…*shudders*

  • petros0359

So two more bonus pages… And that will make a full year of bonus pages… unless of course Mr. Alex decides to celebrate with a double bonus page…
    Just sayin… :: hint hint :: o:-)

  • purplefoxglove

Okay, my mind is happily busy drawing conclusions and making connections where it’s not in order. The latest thought: Hey, how come Spooky’s birthday flashback and Alex’ birthday almost coincide? To which I respond: That’s coincidence. He couldn’t predict there’d be enough bonus pages to do it on purpose – although it’s cool we got the double-page shortly after the 28th. Mind: But we’ve been quite ahead with bonus pages for some time now. Is Alex trying to tell us something about his 13th birthday? Me: Don’t get into theological discussions with me – I mean, yourself. It makes the brain hurt. Mind: The giant ant is probably just going to ask Spooky whether he brought news from uncle Fred. Me: Who’s uncle Fred? Mind: One of the ant minions sent out to prepare the conquest of this world.
And now I managed to self-fry my brain.

…for some reasons, I find the little critter in the bottom left corner adorable in a slightly creepy way. Do you think it would make for a good pet?

    • Klaus

      • purplefoxglove

    • Depends on if it can be trained….now that you said that, I kind of want one as a pet too.

      • purplefoxglove

I think if you managed to train them, you’d never have trouble with vermin again. Or door-to-door salesmen.

    • zunden

I think it’d be more likely that the giant ant would ask if Jeff made that cake, and if so, if there was more left.

But that’s only funny if you know what I’m talking about.

  • GrumpyPanda94

its very different then the previous hell we saw : /

    • Johndar

Hell doesn’t always look the same. Heck, Alex might be going for the nine hells variant.

    • zunden

Hell is a big place. Kings don’t usually live among the plebs…

  • Pikinanou

That’s why one should always have a can of Raid in their pockets…

  • Tharsonius

I guess Spooky got in trouble because he violated one of the big no-no’s in hell: cake! Especially fancy cake. ‘We’ll put you on a diet, boy! After all, this is hell, so it’s fitting. Dieting for eternity, and your only solace will be broccoli! Muhahahahaaa!’

  • Johndar

I gotta say, I love this comic and this is a beautifully rendered page, but this offers next to nothing in terms of progressing the story. In terms of grand spectacle, the last page achieves the same thing, but also offers some story. Maybe it’s for pacing purposes, and this will all work a lot better as a graphic novel, but as a web comic update it feels kind of meh. This could have been a panel of a larger page, even 2 more panels would have made it feel like progress, and when we only get 1 maybe two updates a week it’s kind of disappointing.

Like I said, love the comic, just some personal criticism.

    • Heh

In any story, you have to build things up. If they just, you know, rush things, the ending part will not have the same effects. Graphic Novel or comic, pace is a thing an artist/author can’t miss.

I understand you point of view, but this page is far away of being meh. You just have to find the beauty in it, since every page is expressive and adds so much, with or without text. 🙂

      • Johndar

I understand what you’re saying, and that’s fair, but I just don’t agree. Web comics require a specific kind of pacing, and while this story usually doesn’t follow the standard it hasn’t bothered me until this page. It WAS very “meh” to me, whether you disagree or not. My exact reaction was “Wednesday, sweet maybe a new YP page… Oh. It’s essentially last page with one action progression and that’s it.”. Like I said, I love the comic, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have faults and I can’t criticize. I make comics myself, and I’m open to constructive criticism, whether I agree with it or not. Pacing IS important, no argument here, and while my opinion may change when going through the archives or reading it in tangible form, right now I think they failed to nail it.

        • Heh

I did not say you could not disgree, Johndar. I was just saying that for me, it was different. It felt different. You have every right to think this update is MEH, surely, and my opinion on the matter it’s not relevant to your reaction, but i was surprised to know your opinion on this page. I did not have the same reaction at all.

This comic CAN have faults, but to me, this question in particular was not enough to make this one of them. Its a comic, i expected things like this from the start. I understand your point, but in my opinion, not every page has to tell a history. Some pages can just put some more impact in the history that was already been told. Does this makes sense?

After reading comics like Elan meets Rafa, things like a specific kind of pacing that every comic MUST have don’t seem so important anymore. But i never made comics, so i dont know much about the whole process. Im just here for the story, and this page did not dissapoint me, so i tought i should tell you that.

          • Johndar

Like I said, I understand your point. Was just expounding on mine, I didn’t think you were trying to stifle my opinion sorry if it sounded like that.

I do agree that there’s nothing wrong with experimenting or breaking conventions in story telling. Just didn’t hit the mark here for me.

  • Jac

Even scarier than demon-bugs, the stripe on Spooky’s shirt has mysteriously disappeared….

Okay, now that I’m done being a nitpicking jerk, I gotta say this page is so very terrifying, in spite of the fact that I know he survives. I guess death isn’t what worries me about what’s going to happen next O_O

    • Sanbai

Exactly! This page has no dialogue, but it’s fucking terrifying! You really want Spooky to be safe and I think the page pushes the reader to a greater understanding that Spooky might just rush into the arms of anyone who would save him from this! Uuugghhh I need the next page!!

    • Heh

Agreed. I can almost hear him screaming.

  • hennerson

I’m thinking there might be some ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ narrative with these Hells…

So lust sends Kyle to Laampros’ hell (where he narrowly avoids daddy gettin’ it on with him (Demons…)

Now we’ve got a porky young Spooky (Spoorky?) still in his PJ’s scarfing down birthday cake – a clear case of gluttony if ever I saw one.

It’s a shame there aren’t 7 Young Protectors, one for each sin (unless there’s a really lazy YP we haven’t seen yet), because that would both
be very cool and make me look pretty psychic.

    • b3nc0

The lazy YP got me chuckling aloud & people are staring now XD

    • Heh

Maybe one of them will have to face two hells, but i do not hope so, They already suffer enough. (Heros….)

  • Shinashi

Oh, dear… What a scary page.

  • Sapfo

    DEEEEMONS! Demons, demons, demons!!! Monsters….

Oh let´s have a look att them all ^_^

There is the scorpion demon, there is the Shelob demon, ox demon, the little demon that looks like a black dog … with a horn … and the golem demon. So maney demon and only one Spooky to go around.

Alex, you make me want to look through all the different references on various demons and monsters found in scifi and fantasy. But I leave that for someother day.

Good nigth dear Spooky, you hang in there ^_^

    • DC

I’m hoping those monsters fight each other instead of them all getting any closer to poor Spooky. OoO/.

    • Heh

Spooky mentioned getting abused by some of them, and with their powers, they made him even think he liked it. Seeing your references, i am wondering when will that happen. The monsters here look… bestial? Is that the word?

Like ferocious animals, following the basic instintcs – Spooky is a soft being made of meat, they are hungry. Is there any demons with ‘human’ form, or at least similar, like Laampros? Can’t be the exact same, after all they appeared in different places. But since you mentioned, if there is, i wonder what the references will be.

      Any guess, Sapfo?

      • Sapfo

Well Alex did mention in is page notes, that the demon was not on this page. So non I say. However, I would not mind that black dog like demon with the horn. I bet he likes a good belly scratching, or maybe I can teach him to fetch. ^_^

        • So there are at least 3 of us who want that one as a pet…. ^_^

          • The little black one with the horn reminds me of my neighbor’s Chihuahua when he gets pissed off. Snarls almost exactly the same but without the drooling.

        • Heh

I bet he’ll be a wonderful pet! Take him for a walk and watch your neighbohood freak out! Haha ^3^

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

What I notice here is the number of demons converging…….is it possible there will be 13 in all….and what did they do to Spook ? this could get real messy real quick!

  • b3nc0

Last week, after a more-than-a-year-long hiatus, Demon of the Underground was back:
You have no effing idea how happy I am (◠◠) (/◠◠)/
orz I only saw it today, so there are 2 (two!) pages already!

    • TheGodEaters

Oh my, you have no idea how happy that makes me to hear that! I came to see Young Protector’s newest page and got a bonus along the way.

    • Lillihandra

Sorry, I know a bit of an outburst. I followed that comic regularly and I was afraid it was never going to update again when it stopped without warning. Checked back every day for months U.U*… Finally made myself give up rather than juggling a comic that wasn’t updating with a bunch of comics that update regularly. Did a bit of a purge then. So glad it’s back. It was one of my favorites.

  • Superjenny

~ahem~ I mean NOOOOOO NOT SPOOKY!

  • Jeabro21

    Reminds me of predator

  • Dakejev

    …now I know what my next nightmare will look like. O_O;

  • I checked this page on my phone last night when I saw Alex’s tweet.

What a shock! I couldn’t take in all the details properly but this was not what I was expecting. For some reason all this beautifully drawn detail and colors seems amplified on a 5 /12 inch screen. Maybe it’s because I pinched and zoomed.

Spooks is having a real Frodo Baggins moment there. Is there a Sam somewhere lurking nearby who will rescue him from ol’ Shelob?

I do appreciate the dramatically significant 13 birthday candle in the lower corner there.

    • Adam Irving

Yes, Frodo! That was the same sense I got too, in a great associative way!

  • Heh

  • Ikaru Sentinal-K’Valshar

…I have a feeling that Spooky develops and issue with bugs…

  • Shjade

o/~ ‘Cause when you’re thirteen and
some demon tells you they’ll eat you,
    you’re gonna believe them.

And when you’re thirteen feeling like there’s
nothing to pray about but to please end,
    you’re beggin’.

It’s the strife that made you who you’re gonna be.
    Spooky. o/~

(No, I don’t know why Taylor Swift popped into my head for this, either. I blame 2 AM.)

  • LazyReader

Let’s see what the Pokedex says….

    “Get da @#@$ outta there”

  • TheGodEaters

What makes this entire situation with Spooky worse for me is the fact that I have a 13 year old sibling and imagining them in Spooky’s position is not making this any easier to read…..

  • justkeepondriving

Kudos to Adam for being able to draw such hideous creatures. Yikes! D: And yes, that is both a compliment and a complaint. 😉

  • Lillihandra

At least we know he makes it out okay. Still going to be rough to watch.

  • vessto

I’d use chubby to describe him. 😀 Sounds sweets.

OMG, what a fanart, I’d eat ice cream from that body!!…

    • Guest

      He’s thirteen.

      • Klaus

Not on that fan art picture.

      • vessto

I meant the fan art image.

  • Steven K.
  • Kate G

BIG FUCKING SPIDER!!!! *runs* *hides under the bed* Please take it awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, I’m terrified of spiders!!!! *shivers*

And he’s not pudgy. He just has some baby fat to get rid of. At least, that’s how I’m looking at.

You wonder why my least favorite superhero is Spiderman. IT’S THE DAMN SPIDERS. Love the powers; hate the spiders. Lose the spiders, I’d be happy.

  • jreed3842

    Hello, comment section!
    Good news!
I’ve quit my job, because I need to move back home! So I’ll be able to camp on a regular basis now! It’ll be nice to hang around in the comment section again. I MISS YOU ALL! 😛

    • bronakopdin

I just hope it’s not a serious reason why you needed to go back home, even quitting… though you don’t sound that depressed ^^

      • jreed3842

Oh, no! It’s not a serious reason! It’s just that I’m done with school and my lease on the apartment ends at the end of this month. Then I’m going back home and living there for just a while, until I raise enough money to move. 😀

    • stickfigurefairytales

Happy to be getting you back, jreed!

  • vessto

Posting off-topic for a first time.:)

Today I found this site and it is full of lists. I found at least 30
useful lists of GLBTQ movies – from cinema movies and TV shows to
documentaries and shorts. Some lists contains movies’ summaries so
people can estimate if the certain title is their cup of tea.

Also has good Yaoi and Anime lists.

Of course the site is full of any other themes but I hardly had time to explore them.

    • Heh

Since you posted, Vessto, i’ll be leaving here my bit of off – topic too. Do you mind if i do?

I don’t know how many of you guys know about the comfort spot, but to me, who just found it yestarday, it seemed so good and sweet a ideia, that i just wanted to put this here, so you all know you’re not alone when you need someone to talk. 🙂

      • vessto

Seems very nice place, I made an account.

  • Ooohhh! Am I the first camper of the evening? Hello to all…the crickets.

    • SofiaT

      Hi Gryphon!
I’ve been around for quite a while now but just lurking, waiting for the update 🙂

      • I figured there were some lurkers around. I may lurk a bit here and there myself.

        How are you?

        • SofiaT

Good. Today it’s quite cold so I had warm oatmeal for breakfast and then got myself back inside the covers.
I need to clean the house but I’ll do that after the page updates… or at least that’s what I keep telling myself. 😛

          • Cozying up sounds really nice right now. I should change into my sweats and thick socks.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Yay for comfy and cozy!

          • stickfigurefairytales

It can be so hard to get motivated to clean.

          • SofiaT

I only got a two-bedroom flat and I use the guest room mostly as a storage room for all the laundry I don’t feel like folding/ironing, so it’s not really bad. It’s tidy already, just needs a vacuum and a dusting. I could clean the whole place in less than an hour but it’s cold and I feel really really lazy today.

          • I have a one-bedroom apt and it’s a bit of a mess in here, I’ll admit. Plus there’s a lot of stuff. How can there be this much in such a small apt?

          • SofiaT

I tend to accumulate stuff as well so I make it a point to clear everything I don’t use every 6 months or so.

            Has helped immensely.

          • I need to put myself on a similar schedule. I think it would make me feel calmer and happier.

          • SofiaT

            Lighter, for sure!

          • stickfigurefairytales

            That is a good policy.

          • SofiaT

In the last 6 years I’ve lived in 3 different countries. I also tend to travel a lot. I was never like that but I’ve had to learn to keep my possessions light -easy to pack, easy to move on.

Only exception are my books and comic books. I had my mom send me some boxes about a year ago but most of them are still in her garage… in another country than the one I am now! I must say I miss them…

          • I’d miss mine too. I read a lot on my phone but there’s nothing like an old book. It’s like a good friend…

          • SofiaT

Baron Von Kindle II, my kindle, has been a life-saver. But I do miss the old, worn-out hardcopies I grew up with.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I have such a big personal library of hard copy books. Moving someday is going to be a challenge.

          • Starrwinter

Agreed. I received a Kobo and never use the stupid thing. Give me hard cover books any day… *fresh printed paper smell*

          • SofiaT

Any medium that allows you to read books, is a good medium. Personal preferences vary, but if you are on the move a lot, you’ll learn to appreciate it 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

I agree. All formats can be great, though much depends on personal preference.

          • I moved between 2009 and 2011 three times. And I can attest to the challenge of moving books. We’ve cut some of the boxes down, but for the most part someone would need tear them from my cold dead hands.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I brought a fairly modest supply with me when I was in my apartment during library grad school (only…two bookshelves’ worth?), but I’ve been fortunate to be able to keep the bulk of my collection at my parents’ house (which is where I’m living now).

          • I’m hoping someday to have a library. Well a spare room filled with books. The poor things are still mostly in boxes. Sigh.

          • SofiaT

I used to have one… before I moved to London. Most of my books have been in boxes since then as well.

One day, when I’ll have set roots somewhere and actually own my very own place, instead of just renting, I’ll have a separate room just for my books. It will also have a rocking chair and a fireplace (and a Winchester wing-chair for when I tire of the rocking chair).

          • Yes, me too! This is my dream.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hello! I just arrived myself.

      • Hi Sticky! Seems a bit early?

        • stickfigurefairytales

I suppose it is, but every once in a while the page is early, so I decided I might as well come on over. Plus I just found a thing on tumblr that made me think of this.

          • And you got your wish just now, Sticky!!!

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Sweet! 😀

          • How does Ace Attorney remind you of TYP? 😛

          • stickfigurefairytales

Hee hee, no! It was the thing that Steven K. posted about below, with the hot red-haired guys.

          • Oh yeah….that, I saw that earlier but didn’t have time to more than glance at it.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I posted the tumblr link to it, too (below his comment), since you can see the smaller pictures a bit better there.

    • *refuses to admit to lurking* I am here, but I am trying to work on the finishing touches of replacing the excel document I lost. Now to just find where my 34 missing numbers are…

      • Ugh. No fun there. I’m working on a sample version of my website. I need to send it to my Beta for comments. I’m updating and refreshing the look of it.

        • Sounds interesting. ^_^ I hope you don’t encounter any problems!

          • Not so far. Just having a hard time picking a website theme. I obsess over that stuff. I want everything to look the way I want and do all the things I want to do. I should just learn to design my own.

        • Starrwinter

Website editing *shudder* brings back many hours of editing code and sitting in media labs XD

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Oh no! Losing files sucks.

        • Yeah, I have all the “old” information in there, I just need it to adjust it to “new” information….I have already found a little over half of the new numbers, I just need to find the rest!

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Good luck!

          • Yes, I hope the hunt goes quickly.

          • Just 36 more to find…

          • stickfigurefairytales

How did the number go up?

          • not concentrating on the math….heh and it should be 34….I have found 66…

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Oh dear!

          • Good thing Excel does the math for me….^_^

  • Howdy campers. 🙂 I’m thinking about posting an early update tonight. Does that work for y’all?

    • That works great, Alex!!!! We’ll be here.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Definitely! 🙂

    • SofiaT

Well, we’d rather wait but I guess we’ll have to accommodate you *fake sigh*

    • Yay! You are so nice to us!

    • Danny

      Sounds great to me. 🙂

    • Starrwinter

      Yes please :3

    • Sapfo

      Now it does 😉

    • Now that I remembered it was Friday. 😐

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Glad you did remember! 🙂

  • Sapfo

    Good morning!
    Sapfo reports for duty.

    • Morning Miss Sapfo.

      • Sapfo

        Morning Admiral!
        How are you doing Ma´m?

        • Working on making my brain work properly. Forgot it was Friday.

          • Sapfo

            Glad you remember.
And how is our friend Lord Dangerfield doing?

          • Mr. Dangerfield? That’s a good question. I think he forgot to say no to treggings.

          • Sapfo

When is he ever going to learn?

          • Slowly?

          • Sapfo

We should help him then 😉

          • I keep trying. It takes a lot of patience.

          • Sapfo

It is hard when he is not here.
            Miss Chris -_-
            Miss Adam ;_;

          • Yup. It adds to the burden.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I am easily confused. Are treggings, by any chance, leggings made of trees?

          • Leggings + Trousers = Treggings. It’s just wrong and people need to say no.

I like though the idea of trees wearing leggings. 🙂

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Ah, thank you!

          • Welcome. Sorry for the horrible image. 🙂

          • SofiaT

I often wear leggings instead of trousers… Should I be feeling bad? 😛

          • Nope. Leggings are fine, no problem with leggings, but this idea of making them things that they aren’t. o.O

It’s like breeding a pug to a beagle. Two dogs that have nothing in common, AT ALL, are antithesis of each other, and people think it’s cute. Sigh.

          • SofiaT

I just googled treggings because I wasn’t familiar with the term and some of them are actually pretty nice -just very skinny trousers with what I assume to be a somewhat elastic material. I love super skinny jeans so the idea of having them also made in a material other than denim is not a bad one for me.

On the other hand, I found some treggings on google images that look like yoga pants that have been drawn-on with markers to look like real pants. I’ll agree with you there. Tacky and very cheap looking.

          • Sapfo

“And so Sofia went to the dark side” 😉

          • Yeah, I wasn’t aware of them until a couple of days ago. I think they should just call them skinny trousers. Like skinny jeans.

          • SofiaT

            Except these:×500.jpg

These shouldn’t be called anything, they should stop being produced, bought or worn. Immediately.

          • Oh god grief. That can’t be unseen. I want to unsee that. Those should never have been thought of.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hi Sapfo!

      • Sapfo

        Good morning Sticky.

    • Yay! Sapfo!

      Early for you…after 04:45.

      • Sapfo

Oh you got that all wrong. It´s 4:46 😉

    • *hugs* Sapfo!!! Morning sweetie!!

      • Sapfo

        Good morning Sweet-Doki! ^_^

  • Sapfo
  • Derkins

the *artwork* on this page! oh my! so good!
