139 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 9

Hmm. What does that mean?

So! Kyle saved Mitch by absorbing his father’s fire! But it seems like more than he can handle. And if Kyle can’t handle his father’s flame, what can?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

And HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

  • Hold me back! Hold me back! He hurt Kyle!

    • davefragments

You got the first post as far as I can tell.

      • It looks like it. Heee! Though I think I got it by like a second. Right after I hit post Danish’s comment became a blue bar

        • I didn’t think I had it even though nothing showed up before my comment when the page loaded.

          • Disqus can be tricksy that way.

          • Yeah. Was actually surprised davefragments didn’t grab it.

Oh AJ, I just found something on my dash you might like to listen too. ^_^ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ybZqhPXBQ0

          • davefragments

            🙂 🙂
Between Disqus misbehaving, Patreon trying to be obscure, and friends lighting up my email, it’s hard for me to get the first comment.

        • Same the other way around, but I knew you got it. I accidently loaded a commercial, and my comment refused to post while it tried to load in another tab. Cliking on Post 5-6 times before it did was too much time spent/delay 🙂

    • Klaus

Actually he did not. Kyle took on that fire against his father’s wishes.

  • Ouch!

  • Kyle just needs to get used to handling hell fire.

Kyle thank you for saving Mitch!!!

  • Jeldenil

    The pain of generation gap

  • davefragments

I’m impressed. There is definitely going to be a showdown between these two. Unless, Duncan gets involved. Then it’s a romantic triangle with the Platinum Princess scratching at Duncan’s privates.

  • Kyle is so hot that he’s on fire.

  • Doki has faith in Kyle, he just doesn’t have any practice with hell fire. He can do it!

  • *giggles at Mitch’s pose in panel 3*

  • motordog

I wonder…by absorbing the flames of hell (or an appropriately hell-like dimension), could that somehow ’empower’ Kyle? Sort of like claiming his birthright, so to speak? I suppose that might be too convenient though. I’m still betting on those absorbed souls in Spooky being the key to all this.

    • davefragments

I was wondering too if Kyle could absorb hellfire and fling it back at Laampros with any consequences.

      • motordog

Those flames coming out of his eyes make me wonder…did he ever have those before? Though he does say it hurts, so they could be ‘devil tears’ or something like that.

        • I think we have seen him have “flame eyes” before, but I don’t think we have seen the fire hair.

          • motordog

He has his father’s hair. XD

Think he’ll rock the long beard someday?

          • davefragments

That I don’t remember seeing that before in this graphic novel. There has to be something special about that because it is a common trait with demons. HELLBOY has a crown of fire when he manifests his full powers as a demon.

          • Adam Black

You are right. I think it could be a sign of power upgrade

          • Klaus

Or maybe just that he has not been able extinguish the fire completely, like he did in chapter one.

          • Adam Black

I wonder what else he has of Dad’s

          • Klaus

            His sweet disposition maybe.

        • davefragments

Yes he did. Chapter 2 page 27… There might be more than that but I can’t find it that fast.

        • Klaus
      • timemonkey

Would there be any point? Laampros lives in it.

        • davefragments

But Kyle did break the spell bonds during Duncan’s date and he did burn Duncan. Maybe a blast from Kyle would cause Laampros to take a step back…
Perhaps, just distracting Laampros would give Amanda or Tsunami a chance to do something more…

    • Chris Dangerfield

Motordog — excellent to see you sharing your thoughts after a break. Welcome back!

      • motordog

        Why thank you 🙂

  • Chris Dangerfield

In spite of being silly busy and not commenting properly as this story deserves. I can say, without a doubt, that I am VERY THANKFUL for The Young Protectors.

Thank you Alex, Adam and Vero. I hope the holidays are bringing you lots and lots of pie… the answer to every demon invasion I’ve ever encountered is many helping by pie, followed by enough left-overs for pie for breakfast. You guys are the best.

    • davefragments

      Have a well-stuffed thanksgiving…

    • Adam Black

You have till Black Friday ,
and then I do my own previously , threatened “Chris Over” .

      ( I will even quote showtunes )

    • And we’re very thankful to you and and all our other awesome readers. You make all the hard work totally worth it. 🙂

  • Cman65

And now Red Hot has “true fire” to use can he burn things that would not burn before like Annie

  • pssssst Yuri on Ice Episode 8 tomorrow/later today

    • Squishy

I love that show so much! It’s so pretty and so many feels.

    • Adam Black

      ? .

      • Yuri on Ice is an anime about the growth of a competitive male ice skater. It starts out that he bombed out of a competition because he was emotionally torn up over the death of his pet. He drops out of the skating scene to find his love of skating again. After awhile he returns home (he was studying abroad at the time) and performs one of his idol’s routines for his childhood friend. His skating of that routine gets posted online and the idol sees it. Idol drops his skating career to go to Japan and be the coach to the other man. Idol has little idea how to be a coach, but he is a good skater, and Yuri is an alright skater with really shaky confidence.

  • TwilightDreamer

Mitch nearly gets fried, and can still strike a great pose ;P
    Oh wow…I hadn’t actually thought of Laampros’s flames hurting Kyle…makes sense and it’s really cool…but still…Kyle! D:

  • Adam Black

I successfully called it. the flaming sucking part.

    For my next prediction:
    This is GREAT NEWS!
Kyle just got a massive power upgrade. ( No pain, no gain )

    • Adam Black

      I also didnt see @disqus_CJJr2XlsCT:disqus ‘s query.

I’m still claiming it , unless contradicted* By @alexwoolfson:disqus , since it functions as an answer

*I’m also going to predict Alex wont contradict it, since he pull that rabbit out as a plot-point , from now till the end of time.

  • Shiny Gwilly

    oh
    oh dear
you can handle this Kyle! he just uh, needs a moment
at least he saved Mitch for now

  • camelotcrusade

Thanksgiving calls for roasted turkey, not roasted chicken.
    Basically: Leave Kyle alone.

    • Adam Black

Hes covered in red hair. No chicken there

      • camelotcrusade

I forgot! It’s been so long I’m left to the imagination. Hint, hint…

  • Ah, father-son chats…

The way it’s drawn, it looks as if Laampros is genuinely explaining what’s going on to Kyle, not gloating about it. This is stuff he needs to know to be a true prince of hell now that he’s grown up. Hmm – is eighteen seen as legal adulthood in the hellfire dimension?

    • Saxon_Brenton

I strongly suspect it isn’t a matter of age so much as skill and power. When the prince of hell can usurp the throne of the lord of hell, then he’s come of age.

  • Adam Black

I wonder if it always a hurts a little. and Kyle is too much of a badass to say anything.

    • Advocate

Looking back at the first use of this particular ability, Kyle’s posture during it, and the expression on his face afterwards, yeah, it probably hurts every time.

    • Juliette Leroux

That’s a very good… and very disturbing question. I’m going to re-read everything under this new light (No, I don’t need an excuse to re-read it again, I swear!)

    • Geneva150

I don’t think so. He asked why does it hurt, like he was surprised by it. I think it only hurts because he absorbed Hellfire and not the earth fire he’s used to.

  • David Welbourn

If true fire is stronger than normal fire, and if Kyle now has some true fire to play with, maybe Kyle can melt open that pesky glass box that’s resistant to normal damage over yonder.

    • Juliette Leroux

      Yes! That would be great!

  • Squishy

    …Nobody flames like Lampy (that’s why he’s Lampy)… sorry couldn’t help myself.

  • Mary Klemzak

We do t usually think about heroes hurting when using their powers. Only during X Men, when Logan/Wolverines claws come out, that we learn it does hurt. Every time.

I imagine it’s the same for Kyle when he activates his flames.

I wonder if it’s cold or warm for Tsunami and Mitch to activate the water and wind?

I imagine it’s scary for Spooky too. To hear all those voices and feel everything.

    • Klaus

Or it could be only when Kyle absorbs flame. Back in the prologue it does not seem to hurt him when he produces flame.

    • timemonkey

Personally, considering the downsides to powers is something I’ve always done. But then I grew up watching X-men cartoons so downsides are easier to spot.

  • Mary Klemzak

Fire is also a tempering agent. This can only make him stronger!

    • Klaus

      What doesn’t kill you …

      • Dennis Grace

…only makes you gayer. I learned that watching “Gaycation” on Vineland.

  • Juliette Leroux

Oh man, fire from the inside, it must hurt like, well like hell. That’s heartbreaking. Only hope is that hellfire will help actually achieve things now, like oppening that box, as David said, so Spooky can finaly come back in the game.

    • Mary Klemzak

True. Melt that glass, but don’t cook the people!

      • Juliette Leroux

Ah yes, yes, indeed. Hellfire might be a tad dangerous for the people inside.

  • Klaus

I keep returning to that blurp from the Kickstarter: The story of how Kyle became one of the most powerful champions the world has seen. Are we witnessing a serious power up here?

  • Mary Klemzak

Lampros:Sorry son, it’s going to hurt you more than it hurts me.

    Ok maybe not.

  • Klaus

I wonder what Alex is working on now. If he wants to keep his audience, he cannot go into hiatus for several months after this story finishes. A new storyline takes much preperation. So I think it likely he is at least thinking about it already.

    • Juliette Leroux

OoooOOoooh, that’s a good (and exciting) question. If I was the one to decide and if I could magically make everybody’s schedules work, I would go for Artifice 2. I want to know what is happening to Jeff and Deacon. But I would be extremely happy with any follow up or spin off of TYP (Spooky’s adventure finding lost children?) or any new story.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Given the range of genres that Alex has worked with in his stories and short stories so far, it could be almost anything. I’d agree that if he hadn’t had something in the pipeline before, then now would be a good time to get started.
That said, I get the vague impression that Alex is the type of person who gets attacked by plotbunnies, in which case it’s a matter of choosing which story to push forward for production.

    • Adam Black

      when does this end?

  • Sunseahl Silverfall

    “True flame I command”

    My only two thoughts….

    “The gay! IT BURNS!”
    and
“Well this explains all the flaming Nudity”

  • Dennis Grace

I guess I should be glad we haven’t been inundated with flaming superhero comments from the beginning.

    • Adam Black

      we were

  • Saxon_Brenton

Probably Laampros is just boasting the his fire is better than earth fire, in the same way that everything from his dimension is better than its equivalent on Earth (But if that’s the case why bother in invade earth in the first place. Does he just need the extra storage space?)

But it might be interesting if Laampros was claiming that he wields the Platonic version of fire. None of this chemical reaction of oxidisation resulting in a side effect of heat and plasma business. Just the pure concept of burning in its archetypal form.

    • Klaus

But then why does it hurt so much?

      • Saxon_Brenton

Dunno. I hadn’t thought that far ahead, to be honest.
Maybe it’s simply the shock of absorbing a different type of fire, and it’ll take him time to adjust? Maybe it’s the fact that hellfire is an archetypal form of destruction rather than a mere chemical reaction (a transformation) and destruction will always hurt more? Maybe it’s a booby trap set up by Laampros to see how Red Hot reacts to the pain and therefor see how tough he is?

  • jreed3842

I gotta say. I love Laampros’ dialogue. He’s written very well. He speaks very elegantly, but his words are also very intimidating.

Also … Poor Kyle *gives him some water*

  • Earl Patterson

    Poor Kyle

  • timemonkey

All you people who’ve been screaming at Kyle to just absorb all the fire these last few pages, look at what you’ve been asking him to do!

    • Juliette Leroux

      Huuuu… I feel guilty now…

      • Klaus

Don’t. He is a hero. That is how he sees himself. He is willing to suffer pain to save a friend. Or a bystander, for that matter.

    • Adam Black

      Power UP!

  • Squishy

I just had a scary thought, what if it doesn’t stop hurting? What if he is able to beat Lampros now but the hell-flame he absorbed doesn’t stop burning him. Then to make it stop he has to loose his powers entirely like Dunacan.

  • joshsusser

Whey does it hurt so much? Hellfire doesn’t just consume flesh, but also burns the soul. Or at least that’s what I learned reading Ghost Rider.

  • Will Kyle keep his dad’s “fiery” hair and lighted eyes forever, now?

Would be a double bummer when at the movies: «Dude, can you take your weird hat off?» «Maaaan, you can’t keep your phone light on while the film’s playing‼» And don’t get me started with the sprinklers… ¬_¬

    • davefragments

I hadn’t thought about theaters and sprinklers.

  • SchalaRenee

This is cool. It seems absorbing Hellfire gave Kyle some more of his daddy’s looks. Fiery hair and silver eyes. I guess it activated some of his demon blood. I also noticed how he said “why does it hurt SO MUCH” not “why does it hurt” meaning real fire hurts too, just not as bad. Maybe now, with some Hellfire in him, and possibly some demonic powers activated (judging from how he’s looking more like his father now) maybe he can at least get rid of the annoying minions flying around. I’m sure Laampros wouldn’t care much. After all, his son is just killing some lame minions.

I almost hope the demonic power makes Kyle more…attentive…to his father and they actually start to bond. You know, talk about Hell, family, how to care for human pets, you know, normal family stuff. XD

Oh, and here’s more proof that demon fire can damage demons themselves. Kyle is hurt by his father’s fire…why can’t Laampros be hurt by it too?

    • Klaus

Maybe it hurts because he is not all demon.

  • John

Am I projecting or does Laampros look a little proud of Kyle managing to grab his flames like that?

    • Squishy

The script says “amused” but those two emotions might not be mutually exclusive.

  • KatKaleen

    Uh-oh. O_O

  • Doki’s area is having another “bad air” day due to wild fires.

    • Juliette Leroux

      Oh, sorry for that!

    • davefragments

Stay indoors and away from the smoke.

  • Stephen Hutchison

so, apparently Kyle sucking it up was the correct prediction…
also, apparently Daddy L is hotter than Kyle expected.
SO VERY MUCH wrong with how this can be so easily interpreted.

  • Jason Moon

“Oh f&%sake, son. Don’t tell me the flame that you’ve been harnessing has been that soy crap.”

  • Michael Olivero

So incestuous. Kyle basically, metaphorically, just took his father’s “load.”

  • davefragments

Did anyone else notice that Laampros is not paying attention to much more than Kyle? I wonder what the rest of the Team is doing.

    • timemonkey

Tsunami was blocking the portal, Spooky is floating, Fluke is likely still avoiding the situation and we saw Mitch. I’m assuming Amanda is either fighting demons or waiting for demons to fight.

  • Jeff Baker

Hmmmm….Kyle and his father must have an interesting Thanksgiving dinner. (Who gets to roast the turkey? 🙂 ) Seriously, Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

  • Pikinanou

Ok, I know he’s in pain now but… that second last panel, it’s awesome!

  • Samurai Jack

So, Laampros is elemental fire? Interesting…

  • Kate G

Please hold. Kyle leveling up in 3, 2, 1…..

  • Kate G

(That last panel of Kyle, by the way…..I could stare at it for hours. Well done. 🙂 )

  • Sapfo

    Thanks giving in the US.
I would like to give thanks to this comic and to all the people I meet here. You are so great ^^
Thank you Alex, Veronica and Adam for your wonderful job ^^

    • You’re very welcome, Sapfo. Thank you for being a great member of our community! 😀

      • Sapfo

Oh, you always have the best fire for rosting marshmallows ^^

  • Klaus

Come on, Kyle. Concentrate. Put out those flames. You can do it.

  • Wayne

    I guess that’s why you don’t do that 🙂

  • Happy Thanksgiving to the ones who celebrate this.

    • Doki will be passed out later due to all the cleaning and most of the cooking. -_-

      • Poop.

        • Doki’s feet are dying, or at least trying to convince Doki that they are dying.

    • Thank you, Danish! I am very thankful for all you and AJ and Dave have done for our community here! 😀

  • blkwhtrbbt

the “next” and “right arrow” methods don’t work when trying to get from page 8 to page 9

    • Well, it does now, or at least it does on my laptop…

  • Azmi

What?!? I’m all caught up and THIS is the page I’m left with?? (Super awesome by the way; very creative with the rules for this world you have and Daddy has some pretty on point dialogue there.)

    • davefragments

      Tonight is a new page.
Come to camping with the gang.

    • Derkins

      welcome to the party!

  • Doki is still worn out from the past few days, kitchen is still a bit of a mess from Thanksgiving, but Doki needed a break.

    • davefragments

I hope you slept in this morning. I did.

      • yeah, but oddly enough I didn’t feel rested. My feet did stop hurting though.

        • davefragments

I discovered in the leftovers that in splitting them they took all the stuffing. So today I thawed a half a flank steak, cut a large pocket in it and stuffed it with a mushroom and bread stuffing. It only took me about 20 minutes extra time that I set aside for cooking.

They did, however wait until the last minute to food shop and cheated me out of my cake with lots of icing… They substituted a pound cake… whimper whimper

          • We have plenty of stuffing and mother’s rum cake is actually slightly alcoholic because of how she cooked the glaze/topping…

  • jreed3842

    Crap. I forgot to camp!
I just got back home after visiting my family for the holiday… And saw the Patreon e-mail and was like “Crap, it is Friday night isn’t?!” Hehe.
    How was everyones camping session?

  • davefragments

    It’s starting

  • Toli Bera

Can fire have a shadow? To the internet!

    • davefragments

      huh?

      • Toli Bera

Papi Lampy mentions earth fire is a shadow of what he has in his dimension. so I wondered if fire can literally have a shadow. turns out it can.

        • davefragments

oh, sorry, I’m still half in a turkey coma

  • davefragments
  • Justin White

    dang it
