The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 72

296 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 72

Heroic poses – UNLOCKED!

END CHAPTER 5.

Well, that was a heck of a ride. Thank you so much for joining us on it!

Meanwhile, over on the Patreon page, we’re now less that $15 away from $6100 in support (which we haven’t been at since last November). You all are awesome. That’s all.

(Oh, and I’ll have another fun pin-up to share there in the next couple days, so I guess there’s that too. 🙂 )

And, in case you missed it, this isn’t the end of The Young Protectors!

NOW THAT CHAPTER 5 IS DONE, we’re going to have a short “Coda” that wraps up a few of the loose threads of this arc and gives our players one last chance to take their bows before exiting the stage. The first page of that Coda will be posted at our usual time this Saturday.

THEN (SPOILER ALERT), once the Coda is complete, we’ll run a short arc that focuses on just Kyle and Spooky. Alone.

It starts in Spooky’s bedroom.

Gosh, I wonder what will happen there?

THEN we’ll begin another, longer arc that gives another The Young Protectors character a chance to take the spotlight!

Stay tuned, my friends. The best is yet to come! 🙂

So! Chapter 5 is now complete! But this Alex guy says there are still some “loose threads” to tie up.  What could possibly be left to say with the “Engaging the Enemy” arc?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Aww yeah! Hero fashion poses.

    • 117

      • 😀

And I really hunted for this last one, for the last main page. Was lucky by maybe 1-2 seconds before Dave.

        • davefragments

It was that close. My cursor was hovering over the “post” button as your comment popped up.

  • davefragments

I have had an odd day — puffy white clouds, fair weather, a power outage, a separate cable and internet outage, a surprise visit from a friend, a very long phone call, and the last episode of GENIUS (the life of Albert Einstein). . .

And tonight to end the day, the last page of “Engaging the Enemy“ (my faithful friend for these past five years) … Like today, these past years have been good and bad. On the good days, these pages were the icing on the cake. On the bad days an escape and a solace.

So I say, thank you Alex, Adam and Veronica for your good work. I hope subsequent stories will be this entertaining and look this good.

    • Beautifully said, Dave!

    • Thank you, Dave — and all your awesome readers — for sticking with us for this journey. We have a few more pages left, still, but this definitely marks a milestone. And it’s such a great pleasure and honor making comics for y’all. 🙂

    • Chris Dangerfield

Oh well said!!!! Thanks Dave, for the great commentary and the fine references to other art forms that crept into a good camping session. Much appreciated.

  • Nice finish, Alex!!!!

  • Is it bad that I want to pat Dunkid on the head? Or that I have this terrible urge to say: My precious!

    • Good one, AJ!

    • Bei Dawei

He’s been groveling down there a long time. No wonder he got beat up as a kid.

  • Bei Dawei

    Encore!

  • ComicBookGoddess

I like the offset frame. Makes me think of Porter’s work on JLA in the mid-nineties.

  • Ahh! I made it… But just barely. It’s hard to keep my eyes open!

    Good night, everyone!
    I can’t wait for Saturday!

    • G’night!

    • ComicBookGoddess

It’s the SpooKyle arc I want to get to. 🙂

      • You and me both!

      • TBH, I’m kinda excited to get it to you…

        • Adam Black

Alex, I have a question about the future sequence:
The “Longer Arc”: is that a new book, chapter 6 of ETE , or it’s epilogue ?

          • It’s a new book. The next long arc will have a new main character focus. Which of them it will be has not been told yet.

(I’m kinda expecting it to be Mitch. Otherwise Spooky as a second guess)

          • Bei Dawei

            President Ed Koch!

          • Adam Black

            Thx

          • The “Engaging the Enemy” arc is a story told over three volumes of books. (Volume One is already available. I’m going to have the Kickstarter for V2 this summer, and then, if that is successful, I’ll have the Kickstarter for v3 in early 2018.)

The longer arc would be contained in another series of books with a brand new The Young Protectors story. Maybe not 3 volumes, but at least 2.

It’ll still be the same team. And there is definitely meta-plot from this story (like the degradation of the Walls between Earth and Hell) that will continue to be explored in the next, longer arc. But we’ll follow another character’s journey of growth.

          • Klaus

I am really looking forward to the next story. Will those walls be repaired, and what will slip through until then?

  • Nofsky8

    Oooo, ah, yay! So pretty,

  • Alex, I just love Kyle’s stance and the way he’s looking at us head on. What an amazing, resilient young man he’s become 😀

    • ComicBookGoddess

Like Superman in those Porter JLA splashes. I think even the stance is the same.

    • HIs character arc and growth have been a lot of fun for me to write. 🙂 (And I love what Adam did with him on this page. Just perfect.)

    • Bei Dawei

Reminds me of the final scene in “Big Game” (2014), starring Onni Tomilla and Samuel L. Jackson.

  • Klaus

This was planned as a poster from the start, right?

    • LOL. I’m still not sure it will ever be a poster. But the thought has occurred.

I certainly wanted it to be “poster-worthy.” 😉

      • Madock345

Well you can certainly check that off as a success

  • Amanda is showing such confidence. She’s showing full support of Kyle (no fear of him either) all while also showing that they aren’t afraid of the military, or having done anything wrong on the scene.

All that in one single pose. That is veey well done.

    • Yeah – Adam and Vero totally nailed this. 🙂

      • Also loving Kyle’s powerful pose. This page shows such strength. I love it.

  • Ulysses Paxton

With all the excitement and relief, I’m glad to see the minions weren’t lost in the shuffle! Looks as though their robes were more flame-resistant than Duncan’s uniform!

Now to find out what happened to Spooky’s pets. 😉

    • ComicBookGoddess

Duncan got pretty well beat up before most of the fire happened.

  • Indeed a great ending, Alex! Unlocked heroic poses for the win!

  • Madock345

Love the looks on those two here:

Kyle, defiant, ready to push back if these guys start trying to muscle him around and take their victory.

Amanda, confident this will all work out, but mostly proud of her team, you know she’s standing there like that because she wants to show them off.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Y’know, carefully looking at the art… Those robed minions seem remarkably unsinged for people who’ve been lying around semi-conscious while the fight scene with a fire wielding demon lord was going on.
(why, yes, I am carefully checking that there aren’t any easter eggs in the background; why do you ask?)

    • Maybe their robes are more or less fireproof. Would be useful given who they expected on the scene 😉

      • Saxon_Brenton

        Very true.

    • Ulysses Paxton

It’s probably the latest in minion-ware. Don’t leave home without it.

    • Klaus

The fiery battle happened some distance away.

    • camelotcrusade

I’m sure the one on the ground was hoping Spooky would’ve burped out a spare soul. Oh well. You never know your luck. ☘️

      • Bei Dawei

At one point, weren’t they worried he might “digest” those souls? So “burping” may not be quite the right bodily-function metaphor!

    • Bei Dawei

They should probably think about suing on religious-freedom grounds.

  • I’m kinda happy that there’s no dialog on this page. It doesn’t need it. Amanda and Kyle ‘say’ all that is needes to be said, in the midst of alm the organized chaos around them.

    This page is POWERFUL.

  • ChibE

I can hear the Final Fantasy level up music. Bravo! I can’t wait to read what happens to YoungDunc. I hope we don’t have to wait too many pages!

    • Curt Clark

I’m loving the hel out of Final Fantasy XV. One of the characters there, at the end of some battles, actually sings it out, verbally. ^_^ I’m totally hearing Mitch do that in the background (or Tsunami, under his breath, when he thinks no one’s listening)

  • Zephyr10101

Spooky and kyyllle sitting in a tree, f-u-c-k-i-n-g. Y’know…cause he flies so that’d be possible

    • Klaus

      “He” being?

      • Bei Dawei

        The tree, presumably.

    • Jet Allen

Now I’m just picturing Flyboy dropping Spooky and Kyle off in a tree so they can have sex in it.

And then just…. hovering there, watching them, with a giant tub of popcorn.

  • ComicBookGoddess

Actually, if I were to guess what would be happening in Spooky’s bedroom at that point, I might say, “fireproofing”.

    ;D

    • Depends on whether scene happens before or after this scene (where Kyle now has control of his powers), and how hot the scene would be. It could be a snuggle scene if it is prior to this time in main comic 🙂

(No matter what I will love it, but hope for a post-battle scene… for reasons xD )

      • ComicBookGoddess

Ah… I’m gonna bet that “more control” =/= to “full control”. As a young man who was basically afraid to even play with himself – for good reason – he’s going to be behind the curve on that one. He’s had a lot more practice controlling consciously evoked fire.

        • Maybe. I’d say he has pretty good, or perfect, control now. Seen in how he easily cut a door in the glass box with precission and no more than what he wanted to burn.

An orgasm is different though. Loss of concentration. So hemight want to take a moment to himself, before taking it with anyone else, just to be sure. At least he can re-absorb any fire now, if he needs that.

          • ComicBookGoddess

… I really, really doubt that. Besides, don’t you also want to see him become a tantric master by dint of hard, hard, hard work?

          • Bei Dawei

Speaking of which, you know who else was a master of control over fire? Buddha! During the Miracle at Sankasya, he demonstrated his ability to shoot fire from his shoulders, and water from his ankles, or vice versa. (The miracle was that he could do both at once–fire and water being opposites and all.)

          • ComicBookGoddess

If you meet the Buddha, flame the Buddha.

    • Bei Dawei

That’s why they should do it in the swimming pool.

      • ComicBookGoddess

        Steam burns kinda suck, though.

        • Bei Dawei

Okay, a very cold swimming pool?

          • ComicBookGoddess

Unless it were actually ice it probably wouldn’t help. 🙂

          • Bei Dawei

Okay, so what do you take for steam burns? Vaseline? There-they should do it in a swimming pool full of vaseline!

          • ComicBookGoddess

Okay, so it takes something like 3550° C to sublimate diamond.
The energy in that change dwarfs the phase change energy for water to steam.
            Also, Petroleum jelly is combustible…

          • davefragments

            No water.
Steam burns worse than plain old fire.

          • ComicBookGoddess

            Phase change energy!

          • davefragments

Sensible Heat and the Heat of Condensation is what it is called in thermodynamics.

          • Bei Dawei

You’re focusing on the temperature. But wouldn’t the water also cut off the oxygen needed for Kyle to burn? (Unless it’s…magic fire!) They could also do it in space. IN SPACE…!

          • davefragments

            It’s hellfire.
And thermodynamically, no the water wouldn’t just absorb the heat. That’s not the way heat transfer works.

          • Bei Dawei

Not absorb–cut off oxygen from his skin. (Assuming hellfire requires oxygen.)

          • davefragments

I don’t think that fire needs oxygen.

          • Bei Dawei

(Searches through old Ghost Rider comics for scenes of him underwater.)

          • Curt Clark

There’s a water level in the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game, does that count?

          • Klaus

When Kyle produces fire from his hands, what is that is burning? The fire requires no fuel. Without fuel, what do you need the oxygen for?

          • ComicBookGoddess

As a point of regular old normal fire chemistry, what is actually burning is a vapor formed when the fuel source is heated. If you’re burning wood, first the wood has to heat enough for the molecules to begin to break down – that’s called pyrolysis – and give off volatile gaseous compounds. Then those gasses burn.
Just as the chemical reactions of regular fire are significantly more complex than they initially seem, the reactions of Kyle’s – well, we have recently learned it isn’t exactly the same as his father’s Hellfire, maybe it should more properly be called Earthfire… In any case, Kyle’s control of fire could actually be several interrelated powers, as he is generating some sort of gaseous fuel, generating the kinetic energy of the fire, and manipulating both. If the fire is robust to condition – and I think we have proof that it is – then he would also be producing and manipulating Oxygen in some cases.

Kind of a fascinating question. I like.

          • Curt Clark

            @_@ Head…spinning…superhero science…hurty.

To be fair, I get the same problem when people try to straightsplain the X-Men to me. Like…guys. Guys. I’ve been reading them for 24 years, it should be clear by now that I DO NOT CARE how Storm does her thing, just that she’s awesome when she does it.

But if I HAD to guess, I’d say that the fire Kyle generates is magical/does not need fuel or air, until it ignites something. Then the fire has to follow THAT object’s rules of combustibility/pyrolysis.

          • ComicBookGoddess

            I’m liking your headcanon. 🙂

          • ComicBookGoddess

Oxygen? I’m not so certain that he requires Oxygen, seeing as he doesn’t actually require anything to actually burn…

          • Bei Dawei

In that case, I guess the government should just castrate him.

          • ComicBookGoddess

He made it six years without any problems, and even then all he burned up was his clothing! It took a spell to use his sexiness to break through to hell!

          • Bei Dawei

Okay, I’ve got it. Remember that diamond cage the hostages were kept in? The one with little Glory Holes cut in it for air? Whoops, I just gave away my idea.

          • ComicBookGoddess

Maybe he can hire the manufacturer. 🙂

          • Klaus

Diamond burns at a much lower temperature.

          • ComicBookGoddess

Not at 1 ATM, it doesn’t…

          • Klaus

According to this article, diamond ignites at 900 ºC in air. http://sciencequestionswithsurprisinganswers.org/2014/03/27/can-you-light-diamond-on-fire/

          • ComicBookGoddess

I see. I looked up the melting point, rather.

I dare say ignition point is even lower in a higher O2 concentration.

          • davefragments

To minimize a burn, one needs to cool the area.
The removal of oxygen with water or vaseline only acts to prevent oxidation of the skin or, in plain english, drying out the skin so it stiffens and cracks open. Vaseline is hard and painful to remove, cold or room temperature compresses are not hard to remove.

          • ComicBookGoddess

Vaseline actually insulates a burn. As a fresh burn continues to do damage to the tissues for a long time, they do not recommend using Vaseline on a fresh burn, as it will make it worse.

      • Pool sex is SO not a good idea! *cringes*

Even if you ‘only’ means something without penetration which would likely be the situation for this scene – if it’s an intimate one. Well, they could fool around, if they keep it ‘sanitary’, and they were only users of that pool.

… but as for sex in a pool in general it is suuuch a bad idea. No full sex in a pool (especially anal).

        • Bei Dawei

          But…chlorine!

          • Water is one of the worst lubricants ever (chlorine only makes it worse with adding chemicals), and would wash away any added lube/make lack of lube worse. Ouch!

And – to be quite graphic- you do not want to ‘open’ any genital area for penetration under water (especially with clorine). As for anal sex, you want to have fun not a possible accidental enema – again, not to mention unlubed sex.

IF you want to have sex in a pool, keep all genital areas above the waterline. That goes for any kind of gender. And water has to be changed afterward for sanitary reasons (unless it’s a private pool then it’s on own choice if you want to bathe in it afterwards).

          • Bei Dawei

(Note to self: never swim in a public pool again)

          • There’s a reason that hot tubs in example gay saunas is emptied, cleaned and refilled with water daily 😉

          • Bei Dawei

LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!

            (only daily?)

          • ComicBookGoddess

Takes a while to warm up a hot tub.

          • Bei Dawei

Seems like they should come with a…flush handle or something.

          • ComicBookGoddess

It’s not the outgoing water, it’s the incoming water. 🙂

          • Klaus

            Get there early.

    • Curt Clark

      Spooky’s a wizard; I’m sure he’s got something. A power-dampening spell or trinket (c*ckring?) if nothing else.

      • Klaus

Handling hellfire was one of the first thing Spooky learned in Hell. This according to Alex’ answer to some question.

        • Curt Clark

Heh. “Handling”. Something about these guys turns me into a 12-year-old, apparently.

      • ComicBookGoddess

I’m sure he can make something. I am not entirely certain that the idea occurred to him before this kerfluffle.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Random thought: Now that we’ve gotten to the end of the main story, at some point there’ll be a kickstarter for the second tradepaperback volume.
I wonder if the Spooky/Kyle story will be packaged in volume 3, or if it’ll be packaged with the longer solo arc in a hypothetical vol. 4.

    • KS for 2nd volume planned for this summer, and I think Alex plans for 3rd volume at the end of the year (or early next year).

    • Oh, I have plans for the Kyle/Spooky arc. Special plans. Stay tuned. 😉

    • davefragments
      • Saxon_Brenton

Ah, thank you. I was only paying scant attention during camping because of work.

        • davefragments

          glad to be of service

  • Brian Hopkins

That *almost* looks like Corey with Flyboy, but I’m sure it’s one of the hostages. Guess I miss him and wonder how he’ll fit into the remaining narratives.

    • You will definitely be seeing Cory again. I have fun plans for him as well. 🙂

      • Bei Dawei

        Turn him into a villain!

        • NoiseShaper

Oh, come on! Aren’t there any actual villains around…?

        • Curt Clark

Really? Setting aside the fact that I like him as he is, the kid JUST got into a relationship with Mitch. Do we really want to go there right after this whole Kyle/Duncan mess?

          • NoiseShaper

And I’ve always found it rather lazy of writers to turn heroes into villains just because they couldn’t imagine anything better to hang their stories on.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Young Dunkie looks scared…..I hope everything turns out OK here!

    • Pietro7

I’m worried about him. If he truly has no memories of his decades as the Annihilator, then this will be terribly traumatic for him. He could be turned to the Dark Side (TM) just by people’s insecurities about him. That would be tragic. Kyle needs to spend some time reconciling with him, or I fear tragedy ahead. But then, it wouldn’t be a human story without some tragedy.

      • Klaus

Expecting such a young person to turn evil could well be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

        • NoiseShaper

Well, according to himself earlier, it was not long after that age that he escalated his revenge to the point of no return, so it had a preceding history and then a trigger.

But of course it also depends on how much of his earlier being bullied he remembers now, and how everyone is treating him from this point onwards.

It may make sense to have Spooky and Amanda looking in on him, checking if he might be able to lower his mental shield voluntarily (if that is what it is), which might then allow for verifying his amnesia and – if confirmed – allowing him a new life.

If his amnesia can’t really be confirmed, this will be more difficult, but just locking him up for life doesn’t sound like a responsible option either in that case.

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

True …..all human stories must have tragedy…..sad but true.

  • Fabulous Alien

Everything about this page is perfect. The composition with the helicopters and the military guy in the foreground, Spooky still healing people, the beaten up minions, Fluke and Tsunami and Mitch being helpful… But Amanda and Kyle hit it out of the park.

If anything, I think I like Amanda’s expression a little better. While Kyle looks super badass, the picture of contained energy, there is a kind of softness to Amanda, with her arm on Kyle’s shoulder, and the tiniest smile on her face. She looks like she is thinking “yep, we did good”, and is all pleased with herself and her team.

    • Pietro7

      Yes . . . as she should be. 🙂

    • Curt Clark

Strength, courage, pride, and compassion. Amanda has a lot in common with all of my favorite heroines, both Marvel and DC.

  • Chris Dangerfield

There is nothing to say, but for me this is the perfect page to close out an arc that is about Kyle overcoming a lot of life challenges to become the person he most wants to be.

Alex, as you promised us from the beginning, Kyle is gay and that certainly drives parts of this story, but it has never been just about that. It’s about Kyle discovering himself — inside and out and learning or beginning to truly learn, as much as is humanly possible at eighteen years of age, what kind of human being he truly wants to be and becoming that person.

Seriously THIS was THE heroes journey I wanted so desperately when I was reading comics as a gay closeted teenager. So, other than the fact that I want a glossy image of this page to frame (I mean boy-howdy are these poses to exit a heroes stage with). Beautiful work. I can’t thank you enough.

This June has been really hard for me. Harder than I remember things being in years, if ever. But I can honestly say what I always do… THANK YOU Alex, Adam and Vero. You’ve given me years worth of days where I energize and get through just knowing it’s “page day” and there’s a new page coming and this particular month that’s been more important than ever. Each page has been a treasure and has lifted me up. There aren’t enough “thanks” really. I can just say I’m going to enjoy reading these books over and over again as they become volumes on THAT shelf we all go to repeatedly when we need to re-read that special certain something that lifts us up and helps us all carry on!

I’m very grateful and I hope you three will be VERY proud of this work forever, because as new generations discover it, and it leads them into the future work I know is inside you — It’s going to be a timeless classic. Thank you for letting the me of today and my fifteen year old self have such a grand adventure along with everyone else. I couldn’t ask for anything more. *standing ovation(s) for sure!

    • Klaus

I hope things get better soon.

    • I’ll thank the creative team elsewhere. But thank you too, Chris, for the insightful comments you’ve made over the years. I hope things improve for you.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Thank you. I know they will. And the same back to you and all the other great members of this commenting group. Always such a pleasure to read yours and everyone’s thoughts.

    • Beautiful written.

And I’m sorry you have a rough time. I hope things will lighten up soon.

      • Chris Dangerfield

Thanks so much! And thank you and Dave for the hard work. Great great group!

    • Thank you, as always, for your wonderful words and support, Chris. Throughout the years we’ve been posting this comic, your thoughtful analysis, play-by-plays, and encouragement here in the Comments Section have been a special treat for me, Adam and Vero all this time. Your rock.

I’m sorry to hear that June has been such a tough month, and I really hope things get better for you soon, my friend. Be well. 🙂

    • Juliette Leroux

Hey Chris, I’m only a sometime commenter here but I always found your comments hextremely enjoyable, deep, fun and kind at the same time. We can’t do a lot for you but you have my jedi hug if you want it!

      • Chris Dangerfield

        Thank you very kindly!

You, Mr. Dangerfield, are one of the treasures of this List. Your unfailing upbeat analyses have added greatly to this community and we miss you when you’re away. Thanks for being here even through rough times, and may your personal rough times soon turn smooth again.

      • Klaus

        Seconded!

      • Chris Dangerfield

Thanks so much. This is a very kind note to find. This comment group is truly one of a kind. Thanks again.

        • Pietro7

I’m just trying to make you blush. I’m bad that way. 🙂

    • Curt Clark

You said everything I’ve been thinking all month, but WAY better. 🙂

  • Jeldenil

Thank you for a wonderful story, Alex, Adam and Vero. I’m looking forward to what’s next 🙂 <3

    • You’re very welcome, Jeldenil! Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙂

  • Cman65

Kid don’t move. A few people are very unhappy with the person you use to be

  • That’s a stunning piece of art, and a wonderful end to this arc. I’m looking forward to the Coda and a few loose ends being wrapped up (hopefully including Sircea being wrapped up and dumped in a cell), but this is a really satisfying conclusion to Kyle’s journey to being a grown-up hero. Thank you Alex, Adam and Vero for the last five years.

    • You’re very welcome, Jules. Thank you for such kind words!

  • Cortez Johnson

I believe I discovered this the summer of 2016 or perhaps sometime before in 2015, either way, the first 5 chapters have been an amazing journey. I really enjoyed the Engaging the Enemy arc. Thank you for this. Going from high school to college in this time, I feel like I grew up a little with Kyle. I will say I was never an Anni fan and I am happy that it looks like Kyle and Spooky are the OTP of this arc.

    • That’s very cool, Cortez. It’s fun to think of you sharing Kyle’s journey in that way. Thanks for letting us know.

And if you like the idea of Kyle and Spooky together, then I think you’re going to enjoy what we’ve got coming up right after the Coda. 😉

      • bandanajack

i was old when i started reading this, and just got older…

        • Klaus

I thought that I would be as old as the Annihilator next year, but suddenly I am much older than him.

          • bandanajack

            i HATE when that happens…

          • Klaus

HA! This made me literally laugh out loud.

  • bronakopdin

I love the confident poses of Kyle and Amanda there and pity poor lil’ insecure and scared Duncan x’D
looking forward to everythign that is to come! I guess we’ll see how Cory and Diego were doing and also where Sircea ended up?
Or it will be a total surprise yet again xD

  • Juliette Leroux

Wow, that was indeed a hell of a ride 🙂 Well done, Alex, Adam and Veronica! I enjoyed this a lot, and it actually helped me discover tons of other cool webcomics. I’m waiting impatiently for the next arc! I hope we get to see more of Corey in the future – I’d like to know how the little guy is doing with his difficult situation (and I’m also praying silently and discretly for Artifice 2 one of these days)

    • Thank you, Juliette! So glad you enjoyed it!

(And as I said below, there will definitely be more Cory. I have some fun plans for him. Right after Kyle and Spooky get a little private time… 😉 )

  • TwilightDreamer

awesome final page for the chapter 😀
but awwwwww….end of the chapter again…

  • Kate G

Duncan has that, “Oh snap, I’m in deep, deep doo doo. WHAT DO I DO NOW?!” face.

This page is just the perfect end for this chapter. All cliffhanger-y yet perfect. I hope we get to see more of the other relationships bloom (Mitch and Cory! I know you mentioned Cory would be back, but Mitchers! He’s had so little screen time. – sad face – ) And yay, for more Spooky and Kyle. -dances-

  • Klaus

For a great contrast, compare http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-page-3/

    • Adam’s art was good back then, but the style of the prologue (which started out as a short story before Alex decided to make it into a long comic) looks more like what I’d call generic superhero comics. Good, but not as detailed as we see on the later pages. Logic since that’s what Adam did before Alex hired him.

Even through the following chapters, from chap. 1 till now, you can see a change as Adam’s art developed. Maybe more as Adam got to put his personal style and time into it, and he got more sure of how he wanted them to be/look. This has become just as much Adam’s ‘baby’ as Alex’s (and Vero’s) having put over 5 years into this and more to come.

      • Klaus

I was thinking about how self-assured this character is.

        • Ahh, oki. That too 🙂

          • Chris Dangerfield

Oh well noted… indeed for exactly both kinds of growth. HA!

          • Pietro7

Partly a morphological change – Kyle’s lingering ‘babyfat’ was still evident in the prologue, along with his insecurity. In the final page the babyfat is almost gone (not surprising considering the physically-draining effects of the previous 20+ hours), he’s taut and ripped, but the insecurity is also replaced by confidence and a bit of aggression. He’s now broadcasting through his stance that he is successful, powerful, and will not be pushed around by anybody. I picture those soldiers all thinking “Let’s be careful with this one.” 🙂

  • Earl Patterson

    poor little boy

  • Emma B.

I’m looking forward to the Coda! And that you JESUS for giving us a Kyle and Spooky centric arch right away. It would be absolutely unbearable to continue with the general storyline and not adress the giant elephant in the room – and unfortunately, too many movies/tv shows/novels/comics don’t. So THANK YOUUU!

    • Yep. I wasn’t going to leave you hanging there. And something like that deserves its own arc.

  • Mir

Ah man, what a journey. I started this in high school, often reading it secretly in the computer lab and begging my at-the-time boyfriend (who was bisexual and struggling with it) to read it with me before the teacher would make her round towards my computer aisle/section as I thought he’d enjoy it as much as I did (he refused, his loss!). Now I’m in my Junior year of college. Crazy.

Still very curious what will become of Duncan. But good to see we overall got a “happy” ending.

    • It’s so cool to hear from readers who were “growing up” with Kyle. Thank you for sharing that. 🙂

  • fujoshifanatic

What an awesome page on which to end this arc–now I would love to have this one in my poster collection. Hope it finds its way into the merch inventory. Once the loose ends are tied up, I’m looking forward to seeing if anything else gets tied up in Spooky’s room! ;-P

  • Looking at this page, I have an inner image of the scene after this.

Soldier 1: Who is the kid? Another hostage? Do he need medical attending?
Commander: It’s The Annihalator. Keep a good eye on him. You need to detain him.
Soldier 1: Huh???? He doesn’t look like The Annihalator. It’s a kid.
Commander: It’s him. He had a spell backfire on him.
Soldier 2: His clothes does look like The Annihalator’s suit. It sounds crazy, but all this is just weird…
Soldier 1: Shii-it, uhm, I mean… uhh, put him in ‘cuffs

  • Nate

    *applause*

    Great job, all of you.

(And yes, Dunkid still looks like he needs a Nate-hug™ 😉 )

  • Aneiryn

    Well done, thank you!

  • Great art in this page!

  • This has been a great arc, excited to see what comes next!

  • Klaus

Thanks for the compliment. And more so for your insightful comments.

  • Geneva150

This has been a phenomenal chapter! I’m sooo looking forward to the next!

  • T Dibbler

I would like to second all of the positive comments everyone has made here. Well done Alex and team on a great comic, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. 😀

  • Morgan

Geeze, this has been such a wild, amazing ride. I’m so glad to hear there’s going to be more because up until a few weeks back, I thought the end of this arc signaled the end of TYP. Can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Also this page is beautiful oh my God I could spend my whole life trying and will NEVER look as cool as Kyle and the Commander rn.

    • Curt Clark

      Life goals.

  • Jet Allen

I like that “Excuse me, sir, have you hear about the Lord Jesus Christ?” pose Mitch is assuming in the background there with that one hostage.

Also, that soldier in the foreground – I don’t know why, but the way he’s holding his hand just screams “Baymax” to me. Bata-lata-la.

  • timemonkey

Cue victory fanfare, dispense xp and gp, receive dropped items.

    • Malusz
    • Cuervo

Kyle already got his Big Prize, that’s for sure.

    • Jet Allen

      Cue Aerith being stabbed

      wait what

      • Curt Clark

        GAAAH SPOILERS

(for a game that turned 20 this year, I know :p)

        • Jet Allen

Cloud was never in SOLDIER and he’s pretending to be Zack.

          Oh, spoiler alert.

  • KatKaleen

    A: Nowhere special…
and they ride off into the sunset (usually of Monument Valley)

  • Jac

    Hell yeah.

    • Jac

(I say this aloud EVERY time I see this page. hahaha)

  • Toli Bera

I like that they’re striking the “Fantasy Hero Pose” except Kyle isn’t holding up an axe to get hit by lightning or some such. ((L’example:

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C9YwqXhUQAEWBpX.jpg ))

    • Pietro7

Raises a question – is Lightning close enough to Fire that Kyle could control it? Interesting possibilities either way.

      • Fire Benders can…or at least manipulate it if they are careful..

        • Toli Bera

well if there’s anything that this comic has shown it’s that Kyle’s very grounded.

      • Toli Bera

        That would be a….shocking twist.

  • Sapfo

What a ride this have been!
Thank you Alex, Veronica and Adam for all your hard work.
And thank you to all the people in the comments~~

    • You’re very welcome, Sapfo! (And our awesome commenters here make things so much fun for us. 🙂 )

  • Angelo Ventura

Loved it! One thread is …is the Annihilator faking amnesia or he’s had all memory erased? In the latter case what sense punish a practical mental zombie?

  • Angelo Ventura

Moral: it’s better humans don’t have superpowers. They cause enough disasters as they are.

  • Jason Moon

    COMMANDER: “Game faces, everyone!”

  • This is an absolutely lovely full page panel! Adam and Vera are absolutely amazing and wonderful!

    • Yes, Adam and Vero totally are. 🙂

      • Pietro7

The improvement in the art and colors just since the first chapter is impressive. I want to see what they will be capable of five years from now. So (hint hint) I hope you have enough story arcs to get that far (at least). 🙂

  • Dreamy

I am sad, patreon I guess has deleted my account. I can’t access anything anymore. 🙁 On the bright side, nice panel!

    • Really? That’s odd. Patreon doesn’t always do the best job of letting Patrons know when there are credit card issues, so maybe something happened there. :/

Please try reaching out to Patreon support:

      https://patreon.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

They should be able to get things sorted right away. If not, email me using the Email Alex link above—I’ll get my contact over there involved to get this fixed.

(And glad you liked the page!)

  • Shiny Gwilly

i was feeling unwell last night so i couldn’t see the page and comment until now, i’m better now by the way!
like i said before, i LOVE this story and all the characters and everything about everything! loved all the twists and turns along the way, all the little looks in some of the characters and their lives/thoughts and so on, and of course i loved all the art! you can tell how much work and love goes into each page, it really shows and i love everything even more so cuz of it
thank you to everyone working on this wonderful comic! i look forward to all the upcoming tidbits and tidying up of loose ends
and thank you to this comment community as well! i never would’ve started commenting if i didn’t feel comfortable enough, and you all are one of the best communities out there!
    much love to all <3

    • Glad you feel better now.

    • Thank you so much for such a sweet comment, SG! And thank you for being such an awesome part of our community here! 🙂

  • *sigh* This is not how I pictured Duncan kneeling at Kyle’s feet, because yes I wanted that to happen…

  • Mike Mayak

Wow! (I’ll say what I say to my Husband when we’re watching MASH: “This is so damn good!”)

  • syllibub

Okay, I know it’s not over over, but good god, this has been such an experience. You and your team have poured heart and soul into this comic, and I’m so happy I got to watch the story unfold with all of you guys. I’m really looking forward to the next arc and seeing more of this comic’s world, and I know it’s going to be amazing.

Thank you so much for telling this story, Alex, and Adam and Vero for bringing it to life! I love this page – Amanda is an old pro at the hero pose, and badass is a great look on Kyle!

Can’t wait to see what loose ends you’re going to tie up – I hope we find out what happened to Sircea, because I’m over here googling “how to amicably hit pause on relationship with sorceress wife who unexpectedly physically regressed to a teenager,” you know, just in case.

    • Pietro7

It’s good to be prepared. 🙂

    • You’re very welcome, syllibub! So awesome for us to have you along for the ride. (And I know I speak for The Platinum Priestess as well — whatever form she’s in. 😉 )

  • Hans Niemand

“Gosh, I wonder what will happen there?”

In most contexts, they call it “fan service,” I believe.

    • Tell me more about this… “fan service.” I’m intrigued.

      • ComicBookGoddess

And now I have the “Next Time On Evangelion” music running though my head…

        • Jet Allen

So does that mean this arc is going to end with everyone – including Sircea, Laampros, and the laser bear-like-thing – applauding Kyle and saying “Congratulations!”?

Or is everyone going to dissolve into LCL? Though I don’t recall a scene where Kyle abuses himself over Spooky’s soul-clogged, comatose form, so maybe we’re not at that point yet.

          • ComicBookGoddess

My vote is for the LCL. And Alex doesn’t seem to have the budget problems that prompted Congratulations…

      • Hans Niemand

“Fan service” is a term originally from anime. It means some sort of revealing visual such as a shower scene or skirt flip.

In this context, it’s basically the NSFW stuff.

        • I can’t tell if you’re serious or being fun when you explain it here (sometimes dry humor is really hard to read right). In case of the first belive me, Alex is fully aware of what fan service is and know how to tease us with the use of it 🙂

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

After re-reading this a couple times……something jumped out at me….Youngcan’s reaction to the men coming into the frame……a look of fear…..in my mind I can see him turning to Kyle ….and basically begging to go with him.

    • Klaus

What is most scary, a soldier in full combat gear, or a guy who a moment ago projected fire from his hands?

  • Hans Niemand

Not to belabor the point but, remove the (suicide device, teleportation talisman) utility belt!

    • Jet Allen

Just remove the whole damn outfit. Burn it.

…I mean, obviously, put him in some actual clothes, too. Decent ones.

I just can’t stand Annihilator’s outfit. It looks like something Lady Gaga would wear to go check her mail.

      • Mike Mayak

Oh, loved the Lady Gaga comment! 🙂

      • Madock345

“…I mean, obviously, put him in some actual clothes, too.”

… Do we have to? >_>

Duncan is allowed to be as fabulous as he likes. I for one fully support his Gaga-level costume.

        • davefragments

Come on, vogue — Let your body move to the music

          • Curt Clark

Now I just want an animatic of original-flavor Annihilator dancing to that. ^_^

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

            But….that’s Madonna…..not GaGa!

          • davefragments

yeah, I’m fixed on older years of music and not the more recent years.

      • Curt Clark

But…that’s what I LIKE about it.

Come on, you could totally see original-flavor Anni rocking out to “Just Dance” in that thing. ^_^

    • Klaus

Imagine Duncan accidentally triggering a teleportation device.

      • Curt Clark

“…why am I in Disney World? Wait, why am I ABOVE Disney World? WHY AM I TWENTY STORIES ABOVE DISNEY WORLD HELP”

        • Wayne Lunkwitz

          THAT’s a good one!

  • Klaus

What loose threads are left? Many in Kyle’s costume, and even more in Duncan’s.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

I volunteer to “check” Kyle’s costume……show me those loose threads 😀

  • Jet Allen

    I do.

  • Klaus

It is that time of year again. I just met a truck loaded with young people in white caps.

  • Curt Clark

    Kyle, hell yes.

    Dunkid…I dunno, is he legal?

    • Klaus

15 or 16. That is legal in many places. Here, for one.

      • Curt Clark

…yeah, but most of America sets the legal age at 18. For someone who grew up here, going younger than that feels weird.

      • ComicBookGoddess

Legally he is 58. It’s the moral question, here.

  • Curt Clark

Glued to the page? Why yes. Yes I am. ^_^ (,..probably shouldn’t have tried to Bedazzle my computer while checking the comic :p)

Thank you for an amazing, beautiful ride, Alex, Adam, and Veronica. And thanks even more for keeping it going! 🙂

    • You’re very welcome, Curt! Thank you so much for joining us! 🙂

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

      OMG! Is Bedazzling still popular?

      • Curt Clark

After a certain age you kinda stop caring. I’m 35 :p

  • Jet Allen

Hey, critique all you want, spanky. I hate that whole “You can’t critique someone else unless you’re so perfect at the thing you’re critiquing” mindset. It’s stupid, immature, and reductive, to be frank. People aren’t entitled to universal approval. It’s like you can’t say someone sucks at singing unless you’re world-class, yourself. People know what looks and sounds like shit to them. They’re allowed to say it. I’m sure you’ve had plenty of critical opinions about things in which YOU have no skill or experience, but I suppose it’d be different for you since it’s you, eh?

    • Hey Jet.
While it’s fully allowed to disagree on something, and debate it, please refrain from using nicknames of any kind.

Be respectful in replies to- and of the other commenter’s opinions, ESPECIALLY when the topic is about another commenter, using ‘you’ comments/assumptions, and not about characters.
(This last paragraph was a comments guideline rule in general, so addressed to both of you).

  • davefragments

Please let’s not argue over young Duncan’s baggy pants. It’s nothing more than tight pants that fit so well when he was older but now they sag and droop hiding a young butt.
That’s all they are now — oversized pantaloons, mores suited to a bad pirate imitation than a super-villain.

  • That’s good, but everyone still need to follow the few rules we have. It’s how we keep this community peaceful, even when we debate and/or argue/disagree 🙂

    PAGE 1 – Meanwhile… Louie and Shane
(1.1) Repeat of the climax of previous episode. Exterior view of the building that the Headmaster had taken over with his mind controlled shamblers. There is a massive explosion that destroys the top four floors of the building.
(1.2) Wide shot looking down from above on the triage centre set up by the St Erewhon medics, who have turned to stare at the building. All have expressions of shock and horror.
    Shane: “Dewey!”
    Kat: “Holy crap!”
Louie: “No! It’s too far, too big! I can’t…”
(1.3) Medium shot of triage centre. Louie the hellsnake has an idea and runs towards the ambulance. Other characters watch Louie in surprise.
    Louie: “Sound waves!”
    Joel: “What?”
(1.4) Medium shot of Louie, who has used their tail to grab the bullhorn loudspeaker last seen among the equipment back in episode 27. Louie is turning the sound up to maximum. Other characters in background have surprised and confused expressions, except for Shane who has caught on to what Louie is planning and is covering his ears.
    Louie: “Cover your ears!”
    Pete: “Hold up, man. What?”
Shane: “No, do as they say. Cover your ears!”

PAGE 2 – Do Not Try This At Home
(2.1) Wide shot of city street, seen from where the triage centre is set up. A desperate Louie runs down the street towards the exploded building, where it can be seen that debris is still falling. Louie is moving by undulating their stomach up and down, while simultaneously twisting their tail forward to carry the bullhorn and screaming through it at the top of their lungs.
    Louie: “AAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaAAAAA!!!!!”
(2.2) Wide shot of the top of the exploded building, as seen from ground level. Louie continues to yell with the word balloon seen emanting from below and off-panel.
    Louie (off panel): “AAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaAAAAA!!!!!”
(2.3) Medium shot, focusing on Louie, who is still running towards the building and yelling through the bullhorn. Louie seems to have burst some blood vessels, since the snake is bleeding from the eyes and ears. Louie does not stop.
    Louie: “AAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaAAAAA!!!!!”
(2.4) Wide shot of the building reforming, with speed lines showing the movement of debris and gases as the explosion reverses itself. Louie continues to yell from below and off-panel.
    Louie (off panel): “AAAAAaaaaaAAAAAaaaaaAAAAA!!!!!”

PAGE 3 – Actions Have Conseqeunces
(3.1) Wide shot of building, seen from street level. Thanks to Louie’s ability to poke the second law of thermodynamics in the desired direction, the building has been reformed.
(3.2) Wide shot of street, with Louie in the foreground. Shane is in the middleground and running up from behind, and others in the background also running forward. Louie is collapsing, losing consciousness and generally looking in a very bad way.
    Louie: ” … ”
Shane (angry because of worry): “Will you damned snakes stop pulling stunts like this?!”
(3.3) Medium shot. Shane has reached Louie, and is now kneeling down and checking the snake for a pulse. Shane has an anxious expression on his face. Joel has just arrived in the background. Pete is in background looking up at the recreated building.
Shane (talking to himself): “Pulse, pulse… Yes! Pulse. Really weak.”
    Pete: “Did he really just…?”
Joel: “Geez man. I’m not even sure we know where to start treating a snake.”
(3.4) Medium shot. Characters in same general positions as previous panel. Shane has stood up and is hastily taking off his jacket.
Shane (continued anxious look): “I know man, I know. And actually, it’s kind of worse than that. It’s not just that we aren’t vets. My snakes are extradimenionals, and their biology doesn’t quite match earth ophiology.”
Shane (continued): “I’m probably the leading expert on demon snake health, and that’s only because I’ve kept records on things like regular diet and what normal body temperature is, plus a few MRIs so I know where their internal organs are.”

PAGE 4 – A Call For Help And A Recapping Of Old Plot Threads
(4.1) Wide shot of street where characters are in roughly the same position. Shane is using his jacket as a makeshift blanket to keep the unconscious Louie warm. Shane voices an idea, and the others are now staring him.
Shane (continued anxious look): “But I think I might have an idea on who I can call for help.”
(4.2) Wide shot of street. Shane has taken out his mobile phone and is making a call.
Kat: “You just said you were the effective expert. And who can you call, anyway? People who could summon hellsnakes are going to be magic users, and…”
Shane: “And they pretty much all go insane. Yeah, I know.”
(4.3) Wide shot of street. Shane now has his mobile phone help up against his ear.
Pete (sceptical): “So, what…? You’re going to call Spooky Jones?”
Shane (shaking head): “That wouldn’t be a good idea. The snakes still hold a grudge about the whole being-stuck-in-a-bottle-and-treated-as-pokemon thing. I might be able to talk some of them around, but I’m betting that Dewey would just try and pick a fight.”
(4.4) Wide shot of street. Shane is talking on his mobile phone. The other characters are standing about and looking bemused by Shane’s previous statement.
Shane: “Hi. Listen, I’ve got an emergency, and Louie needs your help. I’m on the corner of Kirby and Lee, stuck in the middle of the whole mind controlled zombie mess. What’s your situation, and can you get here?”

Hello campers. I’ve only got about an hour before I head off for gaming. Even though I haven’t baked it in RL yet, here is some of the raspberry slice that I plan to make for a fellow worker’ retirement party next Friday.

It’s a lovely sunny and crisp winter day here in Sydney, and I’m currently cleaning lawn furniture – I’ll be hosting the annual general meeting for my apartment complex in a few days, and I’ll need the extra chairs.

How are you all doing in anticipation of the next story?

    • davefragments

      Hi Saxon,
I’m doing OK. It’s been a rainy day. It always rains in June.

    • ComicBookGoddess

I’m clearing out some of my email account – down to 18,904 unread!

I expect that it won’t be up until after I have to move campsites, though.

    • Nofsky8

I’m doing good, how are you?

  • davefragments

I’m watching “Arsenic and Old Lace” about two lovely older women who just have a penchant for serving Elderberry wine with a teeny-tiny pinch of arsenic.

    • Nofsky8

Oh cool, “Arsenic and Old Lace” will be our school play next year,

      • davefragments

It’s controlled insanity. Beware of the bugle.

  • Saxon_Brenton

Right, I’m off. I’ll se you all this afternoon, after the update.

    • davefragments

      have a good time

For those who mentioned Father’s Day……it just brings back distant memories of my Dad…..a man I barely tolerated at the end of his life…..he passed away in 1987 .

Camping! I brought walnut divinity – we made a lot of it. Egg whites, sugar, walnuts, butter, heat – mmmmmmmm. And tonight – Coda! Like Yoda, but less mysterious! Okay maybe that comparison doesn’t work very well. Alternative suggestions?

    • davefragments

      Walnut divinity, how wonderful.
I’ll have a bite right now.

  • Nofsky8

Alrighty, I’m heading to bed, night y’all,

    • davefragments

      have a good night

  • *Bouncing Bouncing Bouncing!* What is next what is next?!

    • davefragments

What loose ends might be tied up tonight?

      • I wanna know!!

Learning about PP would be good. Is she 12 too?

        • davefragments

          I suspect not.

I wonder if the military and other authorities will be pleased with the Young Protectors or PO’ed that they acted so boldly.

          • Knowing how the Gov’ment feels about things, probably the latter.

          • davefragments

The bureaucrats can make a case for loose supervision because Kyle went on a date with a known criminal.

Spooky also unleashed at least one, if not three, supernatural or paranormal creatures. It would be funny if the Russian equivalent of Ringling Bros had that Bear dancing to waltzes by Shostakovich

          • Well the clusterfuck could indeed continue into the hearing.

          • davefragments

I think explaining the soul sucking is not going to be easy in any world of the multiverse (if the multiverse exists)

          • No, that’s going to take power point and excel presentation, plus a puppet show

          • davefragments

Ohhhhhhh horrors… that gives me flashbacks to the worst crap I had to do when working — Powerpoint

          • Wayne Lunkwitz

            ROFLMAO!

  • New page will be up shortly….

    • YAY!!

    • davefragments

      thanks

    • Can’t wait to see where it will go 🙂

    • davefragments

Oh you are a bad boy.
I spanked people for less than what I just read!

      {giggle, giggle, snort, snort}

  • Ecaille13

Page 72, they’re like “Hey sis, hey bro let’s talk. Wait dude camera! Serious pose!” XDD I love it! Kyle is so hot and cute!
