128 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 7

It’s a fair question.

So! Laampros is overjoyed to discover Kyle is here to greet him. Tsunami is encouraged to stop loafing around. And a father wants to learn more about his son’s friends. Will there be hugs on the next page?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • O.O

    • Sapfo

No! AJ you may not bring in the goats now. This is not the time for goat pets!

      • I’m hiding the goats.

        • Sapfo

Good! Can not let Laampros get to them, Or Chris it seems! O__o

      • Chris Dangerfield

Delicious munchy goats… nom, nom, nom.

  • Pets.

  • davefragments

Laampros believes Kyle is god of this world

    • Chris Dangerfield

      What? Wait? He’s not?

  • stickfigurefairytales

    “…Yes?”

    • stickfigurefairytales

“Yes, I have a lot of pets. Roughly six billion or so.”

      • stickfigurefairytales

Laampros: Very well. Perhaps we will merely amuse ourselves by tearing apart the four-legged creatures of this dimension.

Kyle: Those are also my pets. And the six and eight-legged ones. And the ones with no legs. Yup, just have…a whole lot of pets. But every single one is extremely dear to me.

        • davefragments

          But not spiders…
          Or those black stinkbugs

          • stickfigurefairytales

Yes spiders!! We need them to help eat the flies and things.

  • Oh boy oh boy! This is getting exciting.

  • Someone is having huge expectations for their son. It’s like one of those overachieving wanting parents xD

  • ‘Keep his army on the other side of the door til our army arrives’

…something they better hurry up with, if they got any chance of helping.

  • Laampros love….*giggles*

Kyle, this where no matter what your feelings you tell Daddy, “YES, they are your pets.”

  • jreed3842

Heh. I like the use of censorship on the last panel.

    • Cman65

He not called “Big Red” for nothing

    • fujoshifanatic

Is that what they call a fire stick of doom?

  • Saxon_Brenton

I honestly have no idea if Laampros is seriously that alien and clueless, or whether he’s asking a leading question as a test of Red’s ruthlessness.

  • Can I have a Spooky pet, please?

    • Chris Dangerfield

Waitress… make that two please! 🙂

      • I will cuddle and pet him often, and love him lots.

        • Just don’t pop him.

          • I’ll treat him much better than he treats himself.

          • Sapfo

            Just like Elmira? o.o

          • … Almost 😉

        • fujoshifanatic

And you’re going to have to rub his belly gently too, to help him get some of that blockage out.

  • SchalaRenee

Kyle should just say “Stop, daddy! I like my pets! Please don’t kill them!” XD

Laampy seems genuinely confused that Kyle would pal around with humans. Poor guy. Maybe he should have raised Kyle himself if he wanted him to be a demons-only guy, instead of pawning him off on some unsuspecting foster parents. Oh, I love Laampros and his cute father/son chats.

    • Marie

I’m wondering if Kyle has many early memories. Maybe he was a hellish demon babby, until somehow he ended up on earth (unless he was being raised on earth already of course), lost his memory and sealed up his powers, then ended up in the human foster system? Or some smaller version, eg that Laampros has (dream?) visited him before but Kyle doesn’t remember.

  • Sapfo

Pets? I wish my pets was just as cute as these “pets” ^^

  • As much as I don’t like heat I just want to cuddle with Laampros. He is just being adorable on this page.

    • SchalaRenee

His confusion is cute. He actually thinks the other humans are his son’s pets. I guess when you’re ruling Hell you don’t get much time to observe humans and understand friendship.

  • Wait. Laampy is pleased his son is greeting him by shooting him with fire? They have weird traditions in hell.

    • stickfigurefairytales

Maybe it’s a coming of age thing.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Kyle’s right about the age when kids start dueling their parents with fire. Oh, I remember when my Daargna went through that phase…

        • stickfigurefairytales

          They grow up so fast.

        • He’s so puffed with pride. Kyle took the initiative!!

      • Must be.

      • not bad, son. Not bad.

    • Yeah, he’s touching the fire like ‘niiice’.

      • I guess that’s how they greet each other?

        • stickfigurefairytales

It’s like a high five! With fire!

          • Maybe Laampy hit him with a bit of flame next

          • Juliette Leroux

            Let’s hope not.

      • Jac

“My thoughtful son, he knew it would be a bit too cold here for me! <3"

    • syllibub

I laughed really hard at that panel. Laampros is weirdly adorable on this page – I think because he’s so stoic while tiny humans blast him with various elements.

  • Jeff Baker

Haven’t we all had parents who didn’t like the people we were hanging out with? 🙂

  • Zephyr10101

    spooky’s face is just creepy

  • J. Kevin Carrier

I can’t tell if Laampros is just being sarcastic, or he’s genuinely confused. 😀
Oh, by the way, there’s a little homage to the YP in my latest webcomic. if you’ll excuse the self-serving plug: http://ladyspectra.thecomicseries.com/comics/429

    • Steven Higgins

It’s very typical of demons to think of humans as beneath them. He doesn’t understand how a half-demon could befriend what he sees as lesser creatures.

  • davefragments

I was reading about HELLBOY in the past few days and apparently, HellBoy has a particular vulnerability about his name. However, his name can only be used to control him while his crown if fire is visible,

So I wonder what Laampros’ particular odd and unusual vulnerability is…

    • timemonkey

He loses all power if his junk is fully covered.

      • davefragments

        I don’t know.
However, that is an interesting premise – with nudity comes power.

        • Madock345

          It’s probably already an anime

  • David Welbourn

Laampros says, “Son. I won’t harm your playthings. Only I need you to take care of your baby sister Exxplodia while I hellaform your planet. You can do that for your father, can’t you? Thanks, son. I’ll be back soon and we can get reacquainted.”

  • fujoshifanatic

Ha! Laampros is genuinely confused! Ah, the cluelessness of parents–it transcends time, space, and even demon dimensions. I half expect Kyle to go, “But Daaaaad! You can’t just go around hellscaping in front of my frieeeends! This is tooootally not cool!”

  • Stephen Hutchison

Kyle. Blasting Daddy isn’t working. You need to suck the flame out of him instead.

NOT THAT WAY. Yeesh. You people have filthy minds.

    • Madock345

I will accept no other way.

Spooky might need to lay down some kind of stretching or growing spell though, because lil’ Lampy is about as big as Kyle.

  • Jeldenil

So I guess Lampy didn’t read the daddy’s handbook on teenagers.

  • Samurai Jack

Just remember, friends are pets, not food…

    • bronakopdin

reminds me I still need to watch find Dori x’D

  • Juliette Leroux

Will Kyle finally get a clue that blasting a demon of hell with fire is a bad idea? Will Spooky find a solution for his souls indigestion? Will Lamproos get a pair of pants? Come back on Saturday when you will hear Lamproos say “Son, you room is filthy. Stire your toys better or I will throw them in the trash”

  • Juliette Leroux

More seriously, Spooky’s face is frightening. I want him to get better. Now.

  • Shiny Gwilly

oh my god, he’s ACTUALLY confused, i love it

just go with it Kyle, you never know what his response will be
    also someone please help Spooky

  • Skudplastr

Hey Alex, are there any Laampros-themed Patreon rewards in the lineup? Between the shadow-loins and now the fire-blast censorship, the curiosity is killing me!

    • Not yet, but you aren’t the only reader who expressed a hope for there to be one 🙂

      • timemonkey

An antagonist themed height chart would be pretty awesome.

    • Kate G

Hee hee hee, I’m still cackling over people picking up the ShadowLoins thing. XD

  • Aitsuki

Laampros actually seems to…. like Kyle? Like, have some sort of warped demon-style fatherly affection!?

    • Shadizar Silvermask

Pretty much, once he acknowledged Kyle as his son he’s acted about as paternal as you can expect from a demon. Might be a source of pride in Hell having a capable offspring so he’s likely happy seeing his son showing off.

  • bronakopdin

I love this page for the humour but hate it for all the despair x’D
    especially Spooky ;___;

  • John

The obliviousness amuses me. Laampros can’t be THAT unaware can he?

    • Apparently so. Arrogance of a demon king.

  • Klaus

“Oh, that was meant to hurt? Let me show you how to do that.”

  • Nate

I see Laampy went to the General Zod school of superhero/human relationships:

General Zod: This . . . Superman is nothing of the kind! I’ve discovered his weakness.Ursa: Yes.General Zod: He cares. He actually cares for these Earth people.Ursa: Like pets?General Zod: I suppose so.Ursa: Sentimental idiot.

Either that, or he thinks his son is into heavy petting. 😉

  • Geneva150

Maybe I’m wrong, but isn’t Kyle’s fire useless against Laampros? I mean, the guy lives in fire…Is this just spirited distraction? I’m assuming since the fire doesn’t hurt, with Laampros having casual conversation and all, that he’s not willing to hurt Kyle? He so could have batted him away by now.

    • Steven Higgins

I think it’s more that Laampros isn’t as annoyed by Kyle as by the others becasue he’s his son, so he hasn’t struck out at him yet.

  • Squishy

Up until now I have admired Commander as a battle stategist. I played DnD and Mutants & Masterminds and when I saw Commander in action I thought “Yes! That’s how a leader character is supposed to act” (we never had very good leaders in our group… but we never had really good followers either). Even in this situation she is still probably the most level headed of the group, but I question her insistence that Kyle keep shooting fire at a demon who is literally on fire.

    • SchalaRenee

Maybe she knows something we don’t about demons? I thought it was silly at first, too, but then I remembered how in lore some demons can only be hurt by their own power. Maybe Spooky told her (or she learned somewhere) that Kings of Hell can only be harmed by other powerful lords of Hell and she’s hoping Kyle will tap into enough of his power to actually harm Laampy.

    • Minyassa

I…I think he’s *hugging* him with that. O.o Maybe that’s her plan, to cute him to death?

    • timemonkey

Demons are vulnerable to fire in DnD, Devils are immune.

But that aside, we don’t really know how anyone’s powers really work here. Just because Laampros is immune to his dimension’s fire wouldn’t necessarily mean he was immune to Kyle’s fire. Or perhaps Kyle actually draws power from his father, in which case whether he does damage or not he’s still weakening him as long as he attacks. Then there’s the old trick of making your enemy absorb too much power and overload.

  • Minyassa

It’s occurred to me that maybe Kyle’s fire actually feels nice. Like maybe he’s all, “Well, these annoying bugs are here but aside from that what a nice warm (literally) welcome. Toasty!” Earth would probably feel a bit chilly to him, especially in his spawnday suit, I’d think.

  • Pikinanou

I just noticed that Kyle kinda have his daddy’s nose XD

    • Jason Moon

Is that only thing of his father’s that Kyle has? 😉 (Seriously, you gave me the perfect opening for that)

      • Klaus

Well, he doesn’t have his hair or his teint. Or his eyes.

        • Madock345

Laampros’s body hair might be a hint at an older Kyle’s appearance.

      • Pikinanou

Well… since I’m unfortunately not a donator on patreon, I’ll probably never know if they have more in common 😛

      • SchalaRenee

If Kyle is a full blooded demon who was cast into human form for some reason (perhaps to allow his dad and his army into the world later on), maybe Kyle’s true form looks like a smaller version of Laampros, or a younger version. I swear I’ll donate to patreon to see Laampros without the shadow/flame loins…XD

  • Jason Moon

Pets? PETS?! This trope is more accurate: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ArchnemesisDad ,
but this one had such an amusing title that I had to include it, too: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IHateYouVampireDad

    • Columbine

      You linked to tropes! Noooooooooooooooo!

      • Jason Moon

        The Great White Trope.

    • davefragments

“Luke, (heavy breathing) I am your father…” (More heavy breathing)

  • Jac

He probably thinks Kyle is trying to keep him warm, bless him. (Or damn him, actually- “bless” seems a little inappropriate)

  • Kate G

*cracks knuckles* *picks up mic* *coughs* Love your ShadowLoins? Call today and get the exciting new FIRELOINS! Made of white hot fire magic……

*cackles* Okay, okay, that one is too much. That one enters dangerous territory of bad puns and deathly bad humor.

I love the panel with Kyle saying Laampros can’t hurt his people. It really looks like fire is surrounding Kyle and it somehow brings out his costume and hair.

Oh, and, guess who will start learning to jump? MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I’m so excited! I’ve been wanting to learn how to jump fences for a while, so I’m super excited. The horse I’m riding now (Vince) was a hunter/jumper but got a leg injury and was retired. He still is wishy-washy on cantering; he doesn’t trust himself, so that means I’ll most likely go back to…SCOOBY! Ah, my old buddy, reunited! I love Vince, but he is relearning to trust himself (so he spooks easily!) and so lessons can go very, very right…or very, very wrong.

    • davefragments

Jumping is fun but please be careful.

      • Kate G

I have a teacher who was once a competitive hunter/jumper. He knows what he’s doing. I have a feeling Dad is all ready looking at protective vests for jumpers as is. I’ll probably come to lessons decked out knee guards, elbow and wrist guards, horse vest….and my coach will look at me and ask, “Why do you have all of that?” *points to parents* “Ask them.” They are, uh, known for overdoing it sometimes.

  • Shadizar Silvermask

I do like his father’s dialogue. He’s not really bothered in the least at being opposed by his son or the others but seems to have a ‘oh do these things belong to you?’ attitude that you just about hear him following that with ‘well if they’re your pets I’ll be careful not to kill them’ or maybe ‘don’t worry son I’ll find you some new ones’.

    • John

I’m kinda expecting something about putting his toys away after he’s finished with them

  • Madock345

    It’s only fair.

  • Keneu

Laampros looks confused, but maybe there’s more at play than just demonic/human cultural differences. What did Sircea and Duncan tell Laampros about Kyle? Did they tell him that his son was collaborating willingly to tear the dimensional wall down?

  • Dekira

That moment when Laampros is genuinely asking Kyle if the other tiny humans are his pets….. His face is so confused….. omgg…

  • Justin White

is he really talking like that, doosh

  • Saxon_Brenton

Hmm. Up until now I have thinking that the Young Protectors would get rid of Laampros by defeating him somehow. Whether that was physically driving him off (the plan to force him back through the portal as soon as he stepped through would be an obvious example), or perhaps having Red Hot usurp Laampros’ position (Red’s a prince of hell, so by extrapolation and handwavium he might have the potential to reach king of hell level. Might have been interesting if this meant that Red tried to pull something nuclear on Laampros, which his dad might not have known about and therefore been unprepared for.)

But the back-an-forth between Red Hot and Laampros on this page makes me wonder if the heroes can simply trick him. As in, Laampros thinks that Red has the humans as pets, so Red ups the ante and bluffs that actually he’s already claimed Earth as his own domain. Dunno how well that would work out, since the history of human monarchies suggests that Laampros would not simply pack up and go away just because Red claimed this universe.

    • davefragments

Perhaps Kyle will be enough of a distraction to save earth

  • davefragments

I can’t help but think that the souls that Spooky is keeping will be restored tot here bodies. Then I think of lesson 11: that this is not Candide or The Best of All Possible Worlds.

    • Saxon_Brenton

It suddenly occurred to me that back during the date-in-hell scene there was the suggestion that Laampros eats souls. Lemme check… Yeah, here we are, chap.2 page 41, Annihilator: “Billions of mortal souls to use and devour.”
Horrible as it might sound, might Laampros be able to be distracted by noms?

      • davefragments

        cruel but possible

      • Spooky housing all those souls currently probably looks like a full course meal…

      • davefragments

Thanks, I started looking that up in the print copy the other day but I got a phone call that pulled me away and I forgot to go back. Strange and stupid phone call.

  • davefragments

    Patreon is quivering in anticipation…
