The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 51

165 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 51

What’s crazy strong here isn’t his ability to cut through diamond—it’s the control to keep the incredible heat restricted with laser-like precision.

Reminder: I’m going to be giving a panel at the 2017 Queers & Comics Conference on April 14th and 15th in San Francisco. This is a huge event with over 140 LGBTQ cartoonists, panels, workshops, readings, and comics galore! (Just check out the Presenters—pretty much everyone is going to be there!) When it was in New York last year, the unanimous opinion seemed to be that it was an amazing time. Tickets are still available so if you’re in the neighborhood, definitely check it out. 🙂

So! Kyle isn’t holding back no more! And he’s just used his power to cut a neat, little door into the crystal cage. What’s next for our newly empowered, young God of Fire?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Yay!

    • Ya got another one 🙂

      • Just 19 more to catch up with Sapfo. ^_^

        • Sapfo

OH NO! Maybe I should talk with Alex so he will tell me when he is posting a new page?

  • That is some great precision Kyle!

  • davefragments

That diamond is 4 inches thick. I’m impressed.
Reincarnate Richard Burton so he can cut a diamond and give it to Liz Taylor…
    That’s how impressed I am.

    • Derkins

Not only can he cut through it, but he can lift it! Probably weighs a ton

      • davefragments

In another post on this page, I calculated around 350 pounds for the diamond slab. That is still heavy.

  • That’s hot.

… And first panel kinda amuses me, with Mitch grabbing Spooky.

  • timemonkey

  • Nate

Well, if the hero thing falls through, Kyle can always work in construction. 🙂

    • We just need Cory to get a control over his powers, and they could be quite succesful as a construction team. The whole team 🙂

    • Jeldenil

      Haha just my thought

  • Brian Hopkins

I appreciate the detail of the elbow and knee tears in Kyle’s costume.

    • Adam is great with details.

    • camelotcrusade

Me too! And I tried to look for other important tears, but the camera conveniently cuts off before the interesting bits.

  • Saxon_Brenton

I headcannon that Red’s frowny face in panel 3 is only partly distate at mentioning Laampros, and partly rueful self-recrimination that it’s taken him so long to accept the full extent to his powers when he could have been doing so much good with them.

Now if only waking up Spooky and putting all the souls back can be done as quickly and easily as cutting through 4 inches of diamond.

  • Sapfo

Diamond got nothing on fireboy anymore 😀

    • Sapfo

That cage could become one really big dimond ring for some lucky hero <.<

      • Klaus

        Gim Allon?

  • Mary Klemzak

Holy crap, that’s perfect! Go get em, Kyle! Red Hot! Your Majesty Crown Prince of Hell!

Overboard? Maybe.. Do I care? Nope.

  • Zephyr10101

    Damn kyle

  • Yay, Kyle!! No fear!

  • Kate G

I love panel 3 with the scorch marks, tears, bruising…it’s simply stunning. Kyle also shows his inner determination and strength well in this panel, yet you still see all of the compassion he has. It’s something we all knew he had, it’s just now showing on the outside as opposed to the inside. This is a panel I can relate to as this is often how I feel struggling with chronic illness. On my good days, I feel like Kyle – ready and rearing to go, feeling like a bad ass, wanting to help people out.

My bad days….it’s Kyle with the horns. Crabbier than the devil, unsure of myself and my own power to deal with my issues even though I know I can. I have a lot of pain tolerance but those bad days really test you. You really can be afraid to know how strong you really are, but you don’t know until you test yourself. Push yourself.

And I just love Mitchers gliding down with Spooky bobbing behind him like a balloon. He’s like, “Hey, I’ve got Spookster. Now what?” *holding Spooky by a finger to keep him in place*

    • Jonni

Spooky balloons are cute! I want one.

  • I wonder if smooching Spooky would help fix him right up and get him to dispel those spirits.

    • bronakopdin

or if it would transfer some souls to our own bellies >//////>’

      • Klaus

  • Neceros

Also, is he physically stronger? I’m just looking at him lifting that solid block of diamond and, you know, having feelings. But I realize I have no idea how heavy diamond actually is. (Even if it’s only about as heavy as glass, lifting that much glass that easily would still be pretty hot.)

    • davefragments

      Aluminum is 2.7 g/㎤
      Titanium is 4.5 g/㎤
      316 Steel is 7.8 g/㎤

      Diamond is 3.5 g/㎤

      • Klaus

Granite is around 2.7, glass is 2.4 to 2.8. Conclusion: diamond is heavy.

        • davefragments

Let’s put a number to that — if the segment is 4 inches by 7 foot tall by 30 inches wide (that’s a common door) That’s 10,080 cubic inches or 165,181 cubic centimeters which at the density of diamond comes out to 1,275 pounds (just about).
          Please check my math.

          • Klaus

Kyle is very strong, but not necessarily supernaturally so.

          • True. That said, a 350+ lb. overhead press is nothing to sneeze at… 🙂

  • Klaus

I hope he didn’t hit one of the sacrifices with that diamond slice.

  • Jeldenil

Is it bad that my first reaction to this page was: Oh well, he still has career options in the home improvement business?

    • NoiseShaper

I’m pretty sure there’s a small but lucrative market for a seamless solid-diamond pavilion for the billionaire who’s got everything otherwise…!

      • Jonni

They could turn it into a panic room.

  • bronakopdin

I love how determined Kyle is now, no second thoughts needed, JUST DO IT x3

  • Shiny Gwilly

    *insert several clap emojis here*
you go Kyle, save those people!

  • Adam Black

Thx for going right to fridge logic, and addressing That Kyle can now Control heat conduction with precision. ( Which sounds like a cold power ) .

( I was thinking that exact thing since we discussed it before )

But I’ve been bothered by one other piece of Fridge Logic for a month.

Why aren’t the Entire rest of team burnt to a crisp from Laampros elemental flame?

( Even Gordon ought to have some nasty horrific steam burns ) . Some of them took direct hits.

    • Stephen Hutchison

Human Torch can control heat conduction with precision. So can Iceman. Both of them have ridiculous levels of control, in the main continuity.

    • Klaus

Kyle took the fire blast for himself. Or almost. He was not quite as confident as now, and so did not have quite as much control.

  • Stephen Hutchison

Well so much for the laws of physics. Take that, Physics!

    • Klaus

      That is what superheroes do.

      • Stephen Hutchison

I suppose that’s true. Doesn’t make Physics any happier though.

  • Curt Clark

Absurd power levels: check. Fine control: check.

Now all he needs is the ability to fly and we’ll have our very own gay Phoenix.

And I have no problems with this at all! ^_^

    • Samurai Jack

Well… theoretically he probably can fly. He’s just never tried it. Whether he wants to be a hot air balloon or a rocket is up to him, and how much heat he wants to expend getting airborne.

  • And before I’d even scrolled down to Alex’s comment, I thought, “It’s not the power that’s impressive, it’s the *control*!” 🙂

  • wohdin

CAN JET FUEL MELET STEAL BEAMS????!?!?!?!?!?!?!??

  • Advocate

This is basically what I expected to happen- a precision move(though more precise than what I anticipated) of keeping the heat isolated. It’s more than just fire now, and perhaps always has been.

  • Klaus

I expected him to ask Gordon to cool the box with water. Kyle has absolute confidence in his power to control the heat.

    • timemonkey

We’ve never seen Gordon affect the temperature of the water he uses so aside form making the box wet I’m not sure what he could do.

      • Klaus

The water needs not be cold to cool the diamond.

        • timemonkey

Only if you’re cooling it after and by that point any damage is already done.

          • Klaus

The water in your car’s radiator keeps the motor from overheating. It does not just cool it down again once the damage is done. The victims would still get burns, but minor ones compared what would happen otherwise.

          • timemonkey

I don’t have a car or understand how they work so I can’t really argue here.

          • Simon Jones

Water is a better conductor of heat than air. It also uses significant quantities of energy when it changes state (solid to liquid or liquid to vapour) which is why we sweat to cool ourselves down. Our sweat is body temperature when it is produced but it cools us by taking heat from our body to evaporate (change state).

  • Aitsuki

Hopefully no one’s head is below that huge diamond plug Kyle punched into the box…..

    • NoiseShaper

It’s transparent (even if not anti-glare as we can see), so let’s assume he checked,

  • Duncan Waterreus

This gives us a lower limit on the amount of heat he can produce.

    A quick google:
Lava erupts at anything up to around 1200 degrees Celsius, while the melting point of diamond at surface pressure is around 3550 degrees Celsius.

So he is shooting a 4000 degrees beam of fire, nice! (give or take a few hundred to offset the added thickness)

    • Klaus

Diamond burns at about 700 °C in air.

      • Duncan Waterreus

only in a stream of pure oxygen, with atmospheric conditions the required temperature is a lot higher.

But you are right, turns out diamonds prefer to burn over melting.

        • Minyassa

But before they burn, they like to fragment into a million pieces. As a jeweler who shattered my share of diamonds while learning the ropes, I’m having to pull down the visor on my Suspending Disbelief helmet for this one.

        • Klaus

“700 °C in air” is a copy paste from Wikipedia.

  • TwilightDreamer

    wahooo!! 😀

  • Kolby

Guaranteed that the reason he would lose control before is because he was afraid of his powers. If he embraces his powers fully, he will definitely be able to control them better ^_^ Way to go Kyle!

  • Simon Jones

Kyle looks like he’s grown physically, and grown up.
He looks more mature (and hot).

    • Pietro7

He’s lost some of his body fat, which makes him look more ripped and muscular. Given all the effort and stress of the past 24+ hours this is unsurprising – the surprising thing is that he’s not a toasted cinder.

  • alright.

now we can let kyle carve out individual, 4 lb. chunks of diamond for all of the captors, as remuneration.

  • T Dibbler

    Yay Kyle! 😀

    • Nofsky8

Don’t worry it took me just as long and I was trying to keep track of them! XD

  • TwoWayStar

holy frick…hes…like crazy strong. to control FIRE to that fine tune but to keep it so incredibly hot…to pick up solid diamond @__@ ….WOW

  • Pikinanou

He gained a few levels with this fight, his stats got higher!

  • bandanajack

i am so proud of this post, even if it does date me…

  • Jason Moon

He probably saw my man Scotty doing that phaser weld scene from “The Naked Time” THAT I CANNOT FIND A VIDEO TO BECAUSE YOUTUBE’S SEARCH SOMETIMES JUST ABSOLUTELY BLOWS and thought it was a cool trick.

    • timemonkey

It’s funny because he’s probably never watched that show since it aired like 50 years before he was born.

      • Jason Moon

More like 30-something years before he was born, since he’s like 17 in this. Not to get all shirty about it, but Star Trek did not air in the Cambrian Era or something.

        • timemonkey

I couldn’t remember which decade it aired. I also changed the sentence halfway through the thought. I tend to do that. XD

          • Jason Moon

(waves cane)You damn kids stay off of my lawn! 🙂

          • timemonkey

You so old you can afford a lawn. XD

          • Jason Moon

If not I’ll look for one on that consarned interwebs thing all of you whippersnappers seem to think makes you such hep cats.

      • davefragments

Star Trek aired just about the time that speech replaced sign language and grunts.

        • Pietro7

No, it was at least a year later. 🙂

  • Richard Grant Muir

And now our hero, having overcome phenotypical horniness, has the confidence he needs to save the day! That’s all he really needed, after all. 😛

    • Pietro7

(Snort) Phenotypical horniness! (Guffaw) Good one! 🙂

  • endymion

He’s very clearly DONE with all this shit. Good for him!

  • Ryan Pratt

Well, it turns out having a demon prince with them worked out in their favor, even if it looked like it was going wrong at first. I love how Kyle has totally embraced his power and has complete control over it now. I bet, with this massive power upgrade and more control, he could even control himself during sex.

So…please some Kyle/Spooky sex? I love Anni, but now I think those two belong together instead. Even Demon Daddy could see how much Kyle loved Spooky. Both share the traits of having been to hell, being abominations (dunno what Spooky is, but it’s not normal), and being taken advantage of by evil.

    • Mus musculus

I think he might be part angel

  • davefragments

    I have to say this:
A propane torch (those benzomatic hand-held tanks used to braze copper water fitting together) hit temperatures of 1900 °C or 3400 °F…

An oxyacetylene torch used for welding steel burns at 3,500 °C or 6,332 °F…

One summer (many years ago, like when they landed on the moon and Woodstock happened) I worked at a factory that made oxyacetylene torches and regulators.
    One more thing:
Depending on the type of LAVA, it ranges from 700 °C to 1250 °C
    That’s 1300 °F to 2300 °F…

  • Akitary

Everyone is like wow he can burn so hot!
And I’m like wow did he just freehand draw a perfect circle???

    • Pietro7

I think I’m more envious of Kyle drawing the perfect circle than of Kyle blasting the bone circle. 🙂

    • That is, indeed, impressive. 🙂

    • stickfigurefairytales

The actress Sarah Michelle Gellar (of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) can draw amazingly perfect circles. I’ve seen a video of her drawing one on a chalkboard. Just a random tidbit of the day.

  • Pinkfeiry

he could’ve done that this whole time?!

    • Steven Higgins

I don’t think so. He may have been abl;e to blast it, but I don’t think he would have had the control not to cook everyone inside before.

    • Gregory In Seattle

Like Dorothy, he had to learn for himself that he controls his own story.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

Not likely, he needed the instruction from his father and exposure to his father’s hellfire to truly awaken him. While he had the potential he wasn’t in the position to fully tap it until after that happened.

  • Jojolightningfingers

im crying look at my boy he’s done so well

  • Mikki

So…I still wanna know what’s going on/happening with anni, it almost feels like they forgot about him lol. Hope he didn’t get fried in that last explosive blast of fire power

    • davefragments

My desire is that The Annihilator lives out his remaining days (if he is alive) in glorious doddering old age, wasting away and wishing that he never used and abused Kyle the way he did.
Let me restate that — a few lonely years filled with regret and sorrow.

  • Pietro7

We saw at the burning building that Kyle can direct the heat and flame of fire, though there he simply drew it towards himself. I’m guessing that he set up a two directional flow of fire and circumscribed it tightly enough to sever molecular bonds and leave the molecules to either side unchanged. (Or at least they were only heated very mildly.) In essence, the flame shooting from his finger was a fire chainsaw.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Kyle HAS grown up and it looks like he’s using his powers in the right way! Sorry I was so late……it was a busy day here…..first mowing of the spring…..but before that I had to get the mower running!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Apropos of something not-Young-Protectors that I forgot to mention yesterday: I’ve organised another chocky bunny bash at work. In about half an hours time we’ll randomly draw some slips of paper out of my green hat, and the person who draws the specially marked slip will get the right to wield the hammer and bash a chocolate easter bunny into itty-bitty bunny bits. And then everyone will get to eat some of the chocky shards.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      What a good activity. 😀

  • All things aside.. This will probably mean that Kyle can now smooch with someone, without setting the room on fire. Good for him 😉

    • Daveo

  • Алексей Широколава

    One problem: diamond BURNS.

I.e. the “laser-like” precision of those little plasma torch, are, actually, useless.

    • NoiseShaper

Not necessarily. As explained earlier, diamond also has excellent heat conduction, so as long as Kyle’s finger torch is focused and intense enough it might evaporate the diamond where it’s aimed at but the rest immediately gets cooled down enough to not burn.

Apart from Kyle being able to direct and absorb fire anyway when he wants to:

      • Daveo

GOOD job you!! I’m impressed! 😉

    • Ansel

burning is a lot better than melting right now though.

  • davefragments

    Off topic but amusing.
Yesterday and the day before was the Pink Moon (As the April Full Moon is called). Today. BLOOM COUNTY had its own “pink” MOON appearance. . .
It all started on April 11th…

    • Daveo

  • Daveo

THIS is more like it!!! Feelin’ good to see THIS!! 🙂 🙂

  • Mark Landes

Since Spooky is in a semi-coma how does Kyle plan on getting the extra souls out of him? Can you just ‘Heimlich’ souls out of someone?

    • My guess is that the solution will involve Amanda and her telepathy.

      • Mark Landes

Thanks I had not thought of that.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      It’s worth a shot!

  • Just a thought, since Kyle can control Earth’s fires, could he by rights absorb the heat in the diamond he’s cutting open, keep it from dispersing all over?

    • NoiseShaper

According to the beginning of the comic, that has indeed always been a power of his.

    • davefragments

Y’all are determined to make me go back to work for a while…

Think of those blue benzomatic hand-held torches used to braze copper water fittings together.
Those torches don’t heat the entire waterline in your house, just the fitting. It’s a matter of Heat Conduction (a subject near and dear to my heart in college — heat transfer by conduction, convection, radiation, in pipes, tanks, and solar arrays, sigh! WORK that I retired from)
Well, the flame on a propane torch is very hot but it’s not got “lots and lots” of BTU (heat, I call it enthalpy)
(sorry that was condescendingly obnoxious of me)
The point is that the torch flame, even an oxyacetylene torch used to cut steel, only affects the metal locally because it doesn’t product enough heat to affect the entire pipe or piece of metal.

Kyle’s flame is small, very localized to a tiny portion of the entire diamond wall. It cuts a line in the diamond before heat conduction can transfer the heat away to the entire structure. Heat transfer by conduction is slower than burning in a flame — that’s how people braze copper pipes and weld steel together.

Think of a single torch-like flame heating a pot of water to a boil — doesn’t work well, does it. That’s why natural gas burners on stoves spread out the flame — so it touches the entire bottom of the pot and spreads sensible heat over a large surface area.

      • davefragments

I’m a little grumpy this morning, I apologize.
Surly is a better word for my mornings.

      • Ah! Makes sense. Well, I’m just glad Kyle is doing what I suggested in the first place. 🙂

      • Nice, Dave. 🙂

        • davefragments

my science lecture of the day

  • Duro

And just like that, the teams budget shortfalls were resolved for the foreseeable future.

    • Pietro7

And the world price of diamonds crashed to a new low thanks to the glut provided by the YP. 🙂

      • Stephen Hutchison

        Actually by the Platinum Priestess.

And the world price of diamonds is artificially high, they’re not actually intrinsically rare at all.

  • Pietro7

I second NoiseShaper’s response. Thanks for the informative comments, Dave. I wish for you to have your favorite breakfast goody along with that caffein to start your next day. 🙂

  • Jeff Baker

We can assume there’s something magical involved with that cage.

  • davefragments

Hello Campers… Tonight I decided to put on “The Abominable Dr Phibes” and I’m admiring the elegant ART DECO interiors.
    How is your Friday?

Is today the day we see Spooky solve his “crisis of the soul”?
Or will we get reactions to Kyle’s new powers from the rest of the team?
    Will Duncan pop up?
    Will Sircea pop in?

    • timemonkey

Sircea should still be blocked by Spooky’s magic but the rest are good questions.

    • I got to watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I found Newt to be adorable and I wonder what his grandson who married Luna was like. ^_^

I found it to be an enjoyable watch, even though there were aspects that I wasn’t happy with. I loved the antics of the niffler.

      • davefragments

I haven’t watched it yet. I bought Dr Strange and that blew my budget for April. This weekend INFERNO was a 99 cent rental. So I watched that.

May will be my Fantastic Beasts month.

        • Some of the deleted scenes are really worth the watch. I enjoyed hearing the Ilvermorny school song.

          • davefragments

I’m going to have to check them out.

          • stickfigurefairytales

I saw it in theaters, so it’s good to know that the DVD is worth borrowing. Thank you!

          • I also enjoyed the segments about the creatures and how they had puppets to help them out on set.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Sounds good!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Ooh, I like Art Deco style, although my favorite aesthetic is more Art Nouveau.

      • davefragments

Phibes’ house has an Art Deco interior.
        The floor is gorgeous.

        • stickfigurefairytales

      • *glomps stick* Hey sweetie

        • stickfigurefairytales

Hi Doki! *snuggles* How are you doing this evening?

          • Not horrible and not currently in a slump. ^_^ So alright I guess. You?

          • stickfigurefairytales

Yay for not horrible! I’m doing pretty well – had the day off from work today and my youngest sister is home for the weekend, so that’s fun.

    • Squishy

Or maybe the army will finally show up.

      • davefragments

        Just in time too

    • Saxon_Brenton

I kind of doubt the Priestess will be back any time soon. I’m guessing that there’ll be at least a few expressions of amazement from the other heroes, but the main focus will be on sorting out Spooky’s problem. Then, after that there’ll be time for a leisurely wrap-up with the maybe-conscious maybe-not-conscious Annihilator and the arrival of the military.
Not that my track record for second guessing what Alex get be up to is anything to boast about.

  • stickfigurefairytales

I’m pretty worn out from running again today, so if I disappear suddenly before the new page is up, it’s safe to assume I’ve fallen asleep.

PAGE 1 – Appealing To The Better Nature Angels Of Our Angels
(1.1) Medium shot in centre of gymnasium with Louie and the angel, standing in the same places as last episode.
Louie (earnest expression): “Please listen. This is important. Reluctance is understandable. The humans do it all the time. They’ll work with the people they know and trust – even if sometimes they’re ones that experience tells them that they shouldn’t trust – because they’re part of their in-group.”
(1.2) Medium shot of Louie, still talking earnestly.
Louie: “And the reverse is just as true. They’ll distrust, even hate and kill, other humans who don’t belong to their in-group. It’s basically tribalism.
Louie: “Now I know that you don’t know me from the proverbial bar of soap. But I live here. I don’t want to see this world go up in flames. And I don’t want to see anyone get hurt. Not even a judgmental stick-up-the-butt like you.”
Louie: “So please, just think about it and tell me. How can I help?”
(1.3) Narrow panel. Medium shot of the angel and Louie staring at each other. No dialog.
(1.4) Medium shot of the gymnasium, with the angle and Louie still standing in the same positions. The angel holds up an open hand.
Angel: “You are correct. This is dangerous, and I did not expect to survive. However, if you are willing to accept the risks, then I will accept your help.”
Louie (thinking to self while maintaining a carefully neutral face): “The usual phrase is ‘gladly accept your help’. Argh! Stop that, Louie. You’re being overly sensitive snake.”
Louie (speaking): “So what do we do?”
Angel: “What I planned to do is this…”

    PAGE 2 – Wrap up
(2.1) Medium shot of the gymnasium a little while later. The gymanisum is covered in random patches of splattered goo. The angel and Louie are sitting of the floor, looking both exhausted and bemused.
Caption: “Three quarters of an hour later, and a noodle incident of a fight scene that I will leave your imagination…”
Angel: “I was not expecting an attack by a sentient and malevolent cheeseburger.”
Louie: “I wasn’t expecting it to be wearing a Carmen Miranda fruit hat.”
(2.2) Medium shot of gym. The angel stands up and gives Louie a compliment. Louie gets a gooey expression on their face, part pride and part embarrassment.
Angel: “Still, it is done now. I don’t think I could have managed without your assistance. Thank you, wise serpent. It is good know that one can find friends wherever one goes.
(2.3) Medium shot of gym. Characters in same places.
Louie: “Uhm, one question before you go. If this was such a dangerous task, why didn’t you get assistance from other angels?”
    Angel: “Politics.”
(2.4) Medium shot of gym. Characters in same places. The angel begins to fade out as it teleports away.
Louie: “Wait a moment. Politics? There’s politics among angels?”
Angel (tilt of head hints that the angel is smiling ruefully, even if you can’t see any facial features): “These are intelligent beings with individual opinions and the free will to act on them. Of course there’s politics.
Angel: “But as you have reminded me, we should judge our friends and allies on the basis of our shared interests and goals, and not on what tribal group we might or might not belong to.”
