The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 50

237 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 50

O.K.!

Just a heads up, I’m going to be giving a panel at the 2017 Queers & Comics Conference on April 14th and 15th in San Francisco. This is a huge event with over 140 LGBTQ cartoonists, panels, workshops, readings, and comics galore! (Just check out the Presenters—pretty much everyone is going to be there!) When it was in New York last year, the unanimous opinion seemed to be that it was an amazing time. Tickets are still available so if you’re in the neighborhood, definitely check it out. 🙂

So! Kyle not only pushed his father back to Hell, but he also completely obliterated the Gate! And now he’s going to try to save the hostages and Spooky!

Can he do it?

Tune in this Wednesday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Go, go!

  • Sapfo

    Save Spooky!!!
    and the hostage….

  • That’s how ya do it!

  • Saxon_Brenton

Good. Decisive action. No time for more monologuing.

  • I know this is bad, but I wonder where Duncan is in all of this mess.

    • Same here, and I really want to know where PP is, and what she is doing, for various reasons.

    • timemonkey

Okay, why do people keep asking this on every single page? What indication have we had that Duncan has moved at all? Last we saw he was unconscious on the ground and the final battle didn’t take that long. Odds are he’s still in the exact same spot.

  • davefragments

Why did Mitch add that “holy crap”? Was it because he was astounded by what kyle did or because he sees something more than what was apparent to the eyes before this confrontation?

    • kuku

      Astounded, I’m guessing.

    • Pietro7

      Maybe both?

    • timemonkey

I’m pretty sure overpowering a demon king, in-demoning yourself and blowing up the gate that brought demon-dad here warrants a ‘holy crap’.

  • J. Kevin Carrier

Flush with victory, Kyle thinks he can do anything…let’s hope he’s right!

    • davefragments

There is a quote from HIndu Mythology, the Bhagavad-Gita “If the splendor of thousands of suns were to blaze forth all at once in the sky, even that would not resemble the splendor of {Vishnu} that exalted being.”

Kyle has become the most powerful man on earth.

      • NoiseShaper

At least Kyle now knows how Vishnu did it!

      • bandanajack

excellent point, vishnu, creator and destroyer of worlds…

  • camelotcrusade

The parent in me says: I’m so proud of you! And: Who’s ready for burn cream? Anyone?

  • Adam Black

Fridge Logic : Why aren’t most of them burned to a crisp after Laampros fried them with Elemental Flame ?

    • Klaus

All the fire on Earth is Kyle’s to do with as he choose. Note: on Earth, not of Earth.

    • timemonkey

Hellfire wouldn’t be eternal if it actually consumed anything.

  • Mitch after you get Spooky get over here and let me apply burn salve.

  • Look at how gorgeous Mitch is! Adam and Vero are so talented!

    • Curt Clark

He looks pretty good for someone who’s been char-broiled, knocked out of the sky 623 times or so, and bashed about in general. :p

But yes, the artwork in this is pretty. I think human!Kyle looks a lot more mature now and I kinda dig that.

      • NoiseShaper

I’d guess falling wouldn’t hurt him all that much since he’s apparently able to control weight and acceleration / inertia with his power.

    • They really are. 🙂

  • syllibub

Ok, I know Spooky’s in pain/danger trying to contain all those souls at once, but I laughed really hard at him just bobbing along in the background.

    • TwilightDreamer

Bobbing along….bobbing along on the bottom of the beautiful briny sea…..
GAH!!!! I don’t even know the rest of that song, and now it’s in my head!!! XD

      • Curt Clark

What a chance to get a better peep,
At the plants and creatures of the deep,

        we gliiiiiiiiiiide~
        far below the rolling tiiiiiiiiiiide~
        Sereeeeeeeeeeeeene~
Through the bubbly blue and greeeeeeeeeeeeen~

It’s lovely bobbing along, bobbing along on the bottom of the beautiful briiiiiiiiiiny sea,
What if the octopus, the flounder, and the cod
        Think we’re rather odd?
        It’s fun to promenaaaaade,

Bobbing along, singing a song, on the bottom of the beautiful briiiiiiiiny seeeeaa…

…TwilightDreamer, you’ve only yourself to blame.

        • TwilightDreamer

XD Haha! I shouldn’t have checked my messages…now it’s in my head again!! XP

    • Sapfo

Oh that sounds so cute…. in a strange way XD

  • PreludeToA

Im ready for a spooky kyle kiss. the world needs a spooky kyle kiss.

    • Curt Clark

      Apologies in advance, but

      GURL YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS <3

  • Kyle has found his ability/surety to lead.

On a completely unnecessary consideration, at the moment, I wonder how much this will change the team dynamics. No, probably more how it will change the friends-dynamics. Kyle will (imo) still be fine with Commander leading, but he will not be the ’emotionally younger’ with Spooky and Fluke anymore.
This just has to settle in, but he can handle it mentally.

    • Samurai Jack

I think Gordon cemented that when he gave Kyle the “family” speech. There’s nothing like having your friend’s trust and knowing your place in the world.

The only thing I’m concerned about learning now? WHAT is Spooky? I assume that’s the one thing Laampros didn’t lie about…

      • I suspect not fully human. Maybe as little as Kyle, but with another background mix/origin.

        • Samurai Jack

Well… yes. But why is Spooky an abomination, but not Kyle? It can’t just be different origins, right? There’s something specifically troubling about him that triggered Laampros. Or so it seemed.

          • Klaus

A seed for a new storyline.

        • Curt Clark

Could be jus tthta he’s a human who practices magic from both Heaven (Enochian) and Hell (Infenral)?

          • Samurai Jack

I’m not sure I’d take bets on his being human. Spooky was out of commission before Laampros arrived, and he didn’t act as if they’d met in person before. He didn’t get to see any magic Spooky performed.

As Klaus suggests below, there’s a story there.

  • TwilightDreamer

whoa……sweet work Kyle :D….and dang I didn’t realise how much I’d missed those gorgeous eyes of yours <3
aawwww….why Mitch, are you swooning just a little there? ;P

    • Mary Klemzak

      I would! And I am!

      • TwilightDreamer

        Haha! Me to XD

  • Madock345

    Yesss.

But also I have feelings of great foreboding.

Please let everything actually be ok from here…

  • What happens in your life either tears you down, or make you stronger.

Kyle has just had what amounts to dozens of therapy sessions within a a few hours. He got his childhood traumas, insecurities, and inner emotions about his ‘family’ relations worked out, but I wouldn’t recommend this kind of therapy to anyone 😉

    • bandanajack

especially not to a sex therapist…

  • Mary Klemzak

    Holy crap indeed!

1.Send dad back to Hell.. Check!
    2.Save hostages.. TBD
    3.Victory pizza with the gang?
    4.Confess to your crush?

    Enough jibber jabber.

    Back to work!

    • Klaus

1½ Take command of the Young Protectors.

      • Curt Clark

nooooo we LIKE the Commander. Let her stay in charge. He can be Number One. (a TNG-era Starfleet uniform would be dead sexy on him anyway)

        • Klaus

No doubt she will still be in charge, but Kyle quite naturally gives an order when appropriate. Compare that to how passive he was at the beginning, always waiting to be told what to do.

          • Curt Clark

YES! Second-in-command would be a perfect fit for new-Kyle. 🙂

        • No, i can’t envision him doing the “Picard Maneuver” with that uniform all the time 😉
          Maybe the DS9 Jumpsuits?

          • stickfigurefairytales

I could get on board with that.

      • NoiseShaper

Commander and Tsunami are pretty good as the responsible adults, I’d say.

And the others seem to take command in situations depending on who best matches the challenge of the moment, as any good team should be able to.

        • Klaus

Yes, exactly. This is the first time we have seen Kyle do so, and I am pretty sure it is the first time it has happened. He is a chanhged man.

      • Mary Klemzak

I was thinking of that too.

  • Hamish C

Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a hero looks like — adversity be damned, quite literally ! Now, go save those people!

  • Klaus

    Hostages? They were never hostages.

  • Cman65

Anybody who can blast a huge red demon back to hell like that asks you to do something you don’t say “ok” to you say “Yes SIR”

  • Jeldenil

    Same, Mitch.

  • davefragments

    Time for some speculation:
The Platinum Princess/Priestess says that the superpowers are either mutants, alien, or magic and that Kyle is none of the three. He is something else.
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch1-page-20/
Later on, the PP casts shade and doubt and demeans Spooky’s abilities:
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-51/
    http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-52/
So there are three choices for who or what Spooky is — Mutant, Alien, or Magic…
    Laampros explained what Kyle is.
However, no one quite knows what Spooky is but I will bet that Spooky is not Alien and that leaves — either mutant or a magic derived powers.
    I’m betting not alien.
I’m out of speculation. I’m willing to listen to any other opinion.

    • Jeldenil

My bet is he’s a hybrid of sorts. Magic/supernatural most likely.

    • Klaus

Am I missing something? His powers seem quite obviously magical to me.

      • bandanajack

demonic and magical don’t seem the same to me…

        • Klaus

Agreed, and Spooky’s powers are clearly magical. He say so himself, both in chapter one and in the bonus comic. Duncan says so too, in his chat with Sircea just before the sacrifice. Sircea does not correct him.

    • Curt Clark

He’s clearly ‘Magic’, based on the breadth, scope, and origin of his abilities, and the fact that he seems to access them via traditional spell-casting. As for why Laampros was scared? I dunno. Maybe becaue Spooky can use the magics of both Heaven and Hell?

      • davefragments

What if Spooky really has a demon inside him..
        That’s been speculated

        • Curt Clark

          Well…maybe.

But Laampros’ fear, coupled with the fact that we don’t know where Spooky’s angelic/Enochian powers come from, makes me wonder if he doesn’t have something from the OTHER side in him…?

        • Samurai Jack

I’m going with some sort of celestial – demonic hybrid. A truly forbidden romance. Possibly not a voluntary one, either. Someone wanted to create a living spiritually fueled bomb, and now we have one. If he were just a celestial he wouldn’t be an abomination, just an adversary. And if he were just a demon he’d be recognizable as such and also not an abomination. As far as Laampros is concerned, Spooky could be a loose nuke.

          • Andy Diehl

Do we know if Kyle’s biological mother was definitely human? Lampy may consider any kind of hybrid to be an abomination (or maybe he makes a special exception for his own offspring?).

Or maybe Spooky is only half asian, and Laampros is just a raging-racist.

          • I am not sure if we know for certain whether or not Kyle actually has a mother.

    • Jeff Baker

My working theory is that Spooky’s parents were magic users too. Ordinary kids don’t get zapped to Hell just for jollies. There was probably a reason, tied to Spooky’s nascent powers and parentage. (My gosh! I sound like Doctor Bombay explaining about a certain British boy wizard! 🙂 )

      • timemonkey

Spooky said he fell through because of the mix of the walls weakening and the whole birthdays have special powers thing.

        • Stephen Hutchison

Where did he say that? I don’t remember him saying anything about how he got there, only that he woke up there without any memory of anything before that.

          • timemonkey

It’s possible I’m misremembering a theory as something that was actually said.

    • Andy Diehl

PP says that Kyle does have *conventional* magic. And now that we know he’s at least half demon, that’s probably pretty unconventional. I remember from the old City of Heroes game not everyone could agree on whether or not Holy/Infernal powers were considered “magic” or something else.

As per Spooky, he’s young and appears mostly self-taught with magic. From the perspective of PP (who is immortal and likely learned magic from a variety of sources), Spooky just isn’t in the same league to be considered able to repair the magical damage she’s talking about. She may well be wrong, but that’s why she thinks a kid with some tricks can’t do what she can.

      • Stephen Hutchison

No, she says Kyle does NOT have conventional magic, and mentions the rules of Solomon, the binder of demons. Ergo he has demon magic.

  • NoiseShaper

    “Save the Citizens!”

  • Foye

    Finally.

  • ChibE

    Hurray for happy endings!

    • Klaus

If this is indeed the end.

  • bandanajack

alex, sadly, not everyone. long time cartoonist and author publisher of the long running comic strip “KYLE’S BED AND BREAKFAST” greg fox is not on the list. i was once again going to urge you to meet him. he does a great strip, and came on the scene about the same time as alison bechdel, author of FUN HOME and previously, the strip DYKES TO WATCH OUT FOR”.

if no one knows either of these long running strips i am indeed older than dirt.

    • Klaus

I have read a few pages of Dykes To Watch Out For, but I must admit that I had never heard of the others.

      • bandanajack

fun home, short for funeral home was a graphic novel, that went on to become an emmy winning broadway play. dyke to watch out for indeed. kylecomics.com is still being released on the web roughly bi-weekly, and bound volumes going back many years are still available. go check out the bnb, but be sure to go back as far as you can so you can have a nice long read and meet the large rotating cast of characters. greg writes, draws and colors his own work, which is why there is time between installments.

      • bandanajack
    • LunacyCupcakes

I wouldn’t fuss too much, I recognise all of the assembled titles here haha But I try to remain well versed.

    • Greg and I have hung out a few times at conventions, and he’s a great guy (with a great strip.)

And I actually had Alison Bechdel come speak at my gay youth group back in the day. I was a huge fan of Lois from DTWOF. 😀

      • bandanajack

i was pretty sure you two had met. i know i made a point of reminding you each of the other when i thought you were going to be at the same convention. not only is greg a pretty fair artist, he writes great dialogs and has an overarching plotline(s) that would make a soap opera writing team hang their heads in shame. did you notice that he had an out gay male figure skater at the olympics 4 years before it actually came to pass.

i have been reading greg’s strip for decades. i have been aware of alison’s strip for nearly as long, but never became a reader. she has made the big time with FUN HOME on broadway, you just have to find the right connected people to move YP to the tv screen, and ARTIFICE to some sci fi outlet.

  • Jeff Baker

Of course Kyle can do it! But how is his being half-demon going to change his life? And who (or what?) was his Mom? Are we sure she was human too? (Wish I could make it to San Francisco!)

  • Klaus

    Just what is Spooky?

Laampros calls him an abomination which should not exist, and wants him put down. It is almost as if he is afraid of him. It is possible that he thinks that of all people with magical power. He made a deal with the silver duo because the gains were worth overcoming his distaste. But I find it unlikely.

How does a thirteen your old boy not only survive a year in Hell, but manage to learn magic powerful enough that he could escape, not by somehow sneaking out, but by killing a demon of a type spcifically suited for guarding the gates? And why was he of all people chosen to go to hell in the first place?

And why does he, almost alone of all the magicians of Earth, not go mad when he uses magic?

    • Saxon_Brenton

Not enough information, I’m afraid. I’m still bogged down with the choice between: is it part of Spooky’s heritage (in the same way that Red Hot’s powers and extent of powers comes from his heritage) or was he just some guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time and was proverbially bitten by a radioactive origin?

The fact that Spooky is a magic user implies that, by tradition, he should have been taught his skills. And he’s certainly knowledgeable in arcane lore. But as you say, he has abilities that set him apart from all the other magicians on Earth.

      • Klaus

I overlooked the posibillity that he had already learned magic before he went to Hell.

    • timemonkey

The surviving question is easy enough to answer: he was their shiny new toy and they liked playing with him so he survived long enough to learn how to fight back.

      • Klaus

Well, yes, but I would expect demons be rather rough on their toys.

        • timemonkey

Only if they didn’t want to keep them. Like Spooky said, they liked playing mind games with him. Lots of ways to hurt people that won’t leave even a mark let alone permanent damage.

          • Klaus

            Physical damage, that is.

          • timemonkey

            Naturally.

    • I like the questions you’re asking. 🙂

  • Kate G

Yea, a happy page which is great because my day was CRAP. Today was my first horse show and I woke up to my parents fighting which scared the crap out of me (nothing like hearing your dad throw a phone, right?) so I cowered in my room. I drove myself to my show because I didn’t want to deal with it. Found out I was upgraded to to the walk/trot/canter group (yes!) and I got second place!

You know, I’m not disappointed I got second, it’s that I feel that my head wasn’t in the game because I was thinking about what I was going home to and what I had left, you know? I couldn’t concentrate. Of course, this all blew up in my face when I tried to explain that. So, tears ensued.

So, yea, bad day a la Kyle for me. I hope y’all had a better day.

    • Juliette Leroux

      Aw shit. Stay safe.

      • Kate G

        I’m fine.

    • NoiseShaper

      [Hug]

    • Klaus

But with some good, even if mostly bad.

    • Wayne Lunkwitz

Second place isn’t bad at all…..and carrying what happened at home with you…..so Kudos for doing so well….and I hope everything at home worked out ……so sorry you had to go through that! Trust me I know how those things can affect a person. (((Big Hugs))

      • Kate G

No, I got second all year last year except the Special Olympics. It’s just for fun so I’m not disappointed; it just wasn’t fun like normal. I screwed up really simple stuff that I know because I was still trying to calm down. Like I know that to go on a canter I use the leg on the opposite side of the wall, not the side to the wall yet I used the side on the wall. Really stupid stuff.

  • Juliette Leroux

Yes Kyle, you know your priorities! I know they can make it and save those souls! I just hope dearly they can do it without damaging Spooky. I want to see Spooky safe and happy…

  • Saxon_Brenton

    Some silly art observations:
In panel 2 Red Hot is seen in profile and has lumps on his forehead. Common sense says this is just bruising swelling up after his horns went away. Wild fan extrapolation suggests that these are vestigial horns, and that Red now has the ability to sprout horns at will for combat purposes, just like the old Legion of Super Heroes villain Prince Evilo.

In panel 1 the box is missing. Common sense says that it is just off panel beyond the top of the page. Wild fan extrapolation says it briefly teleported away as a result of extra-dimensional instability caused by the collapse of the bone gate.

I have also carefully examined panel 1, including the bleed where it extends down past panels 2 & 3, and I can see no indication of the Annihilator, random minions, or escaped hellsnakes. This makes me sad.

    • NoiseShaper

I think Kyle didn’t particularly like his demon transformation and will rather try to avoid it happening again.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Yes, quite likely. I mean, he was able to tap huge amounts of power with his flame blasts while in human form, so it’s hardly like he needs to use horns.

        • NoiseShaper

          Indeed!

      • Andy Diehl

I kind of think he was both frightened and exhilarated by it. His arch and origin are all tied up with forbidden desire, after all. I also really like the idea that the horns and things might return if Kyle digs deep enough into his power. Sort of a “This isn’t even my final form!” kind of thing.

        • Klaus

When he got hi spowers under control, the demonic features disappeared. Kyle does not want to loose control again.

  • Toli Bera

So what about the weakening of the dimension walls? how’s this gonna work?

    • timemonkey

I did have a theory that Sircea was doing that herself to use as an excuse to do all of this.

      • NoiseShaper

I wouldn’t put it past her!

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

If that’s what it is……let’s hope she gets pushed through the damned gate before it’s sealed for good!

  • timemonkey

So, yeah for Kyle, all badass and winning the day. Still mildly annoyed at Spooky for not helping at all the whole fight. I get why he didn’t but still, priorities.

    • NoiseShaper

I think he had his…belly full enough to hold it all together until now!

  • stickfigurefairytales

*U.S. Army shows up fifteen minutes late with Starbucks*

    • Mary Klemzak

      US Army:What’d we miss?

    • Pietro7

Starbucks can cover a multitude of sins.

  • azoreseuropa

Kyle is my favourite, 2nd is Tsunami and final is Mitch. Adam DeKraker knows how to make them good looking and I like Adam’s art. Only Adam that I accepted as an artist. Nice looking guys like Kyle, Tsunami and Mitch. Keep up the good work, Adam.

  • Pinkfeiry

ohhhh the horns are gone 🙁

    • Stephen Hutchison

They were ugly and came with spurs on his knees, ankles, and elbows, which get in the way of the best positions.

  • PandaPounce

…and then skin grafts all around.

    • Pietro7

Bathing in burn ointment would probably be a helpful intermediate step.

  • Wayne Lunkwitz

Kyle still looks ……upset……sounds upset……possibly adrenaline carrying over from his encounter with “Daddy”…….let’s hope that’s all it is!

  • Jason Moon

“Oh good, Kyle. You’re looking at me with Sane Face.”

I suspect Kyle is operating on adrenaline fumes at this point, and is a few seconds away from toppling over.

  • Sebastian East

The demension wall will probably become stronger after kyle pushed his father back to where he belongs.

  • Klaus

Wasn’t there a lot of vegetation here a few moments ago?

    • Whooosh!

    • Juliette Leroux

Deforestation strikes again! Tsss, Laproos IS really a king of Hell.

  • davefragments

When I bought wine at the spermaceti today, I got carded and had to show my driver’s license.

    • Pietro7

Buying wine at the spermaceti sounds . . . like a very strange activity.

      • davefragments

        This spellchecker is truly perverse.

  • NoiseShaper

panel 2: “What? Never watched a father / son argument before…?”

    • Pietro7

      Sometimes they aren’t pretty.
      🙂
But they can be pretty fantastic! Awesome work, Alex, Adam and Vero!

      • Wayne Lunkwitz

I totally agree……my Dad and I had a verbal knock down drag out once…..first time I ever raised my voice to that man…..when he acted like I didn’t know what I was talking about …..I walked away….went outside and chopped wood …..until I cooled down….Mom was worried about me……came out to talk to me…..but I was too steamed to talk to her….except to tell her to go back inside the house…..I don’t think things were ever the same between Dad and I.

      • Thank you, Pietro. 🙂

  • Earl Patterson

    my mitch still alive 😀

  • Mir

    “Kyle..that was..kinda hot..” (literally)

  • Trun Warren

I just noticed…. I went back and read through and Kyle’s fire is now… whiter.. purer if you go back to the begining the first time you see his fists cloaked in flame it was redder, more like daddy dearest but now it is yellow with a core or white. First of all this means higher temp, secondly maybe it means a more divine fire. I mean… Yeah his daddy is a demon, a fallen angel… but that doesn’t make Kyle one. Maybe he is rising. Just a notion.

    • I like the way you’re thinking about this, Trun. 🙂

  • I wonder if Kyle now has some abilities other than just fire.

    • David Welbourn

Well, maybe, but the main thing seems to be a functional upgrade of his existing fire powers partly because of absorption of Laampros’s fire, but mostly because of his acceptance with himself and his human heritage. As the prince of Earth’s fire, he’ll be able to draw on the strength of all the fire on the planet and be fully in control of it. And I don’t think he’ll accidentally burn anything he doesn’t want to burn ever again. I fully expect that the new-and-improved Kyle will have no difficulty opening the glass box now.

Non-fire powers, if any, will probably be limited to what we’ve seen in this battle: limited shapeshifting between demonic and human forms and minor mindreading, knowing when others are afraid or lying or angry. Possibly the latter will only be possible when he’s in demonic form, but we’ll have to see.

It’s also possible that he’ll gain new abilities related to fire that he’s never done before. He may be able to sense nearby sources of fire or heat without needing to see it, for example. Or generate heat without fire, so he can walk across Antarctica if he wanted to. Perhaps he can make shaped things out of fire the same way Tsunami makes shapes out of water. He may surprise himself on what he can do now. He’ll probably need to test his new abilities (if any) and practice to be fully effective, of course.

      • Klaus

He has always accepted his human heritage. It was only yesterday that he learned that he is not fully human.

      • I like the way you’re analyzing this, David. Fun for me to read. 🙂

    • Saxon_Brenton

I have been wondering whether he can still sense other people’s emotions anymore, or whether than was a function of channeling dad’s hellfire, or whether the whole thing was just a trick by Laampros.

  • Derkins

omg I love mitch. He’s the perfect person to break the ice here. ^.^

  • Dennis Grace

Yes, Mitch, get Spooky down, and whatever you do, don’t anyone give him a mint wafer.

  • devil_woman_24

Duncan and Kyle need to get back together ASAP!!!

    • timemonkey

That would be extremely out of character and make no sense.

      • Stephen Hutchison

Thus, it’s a fanfic canon. (There’s still a possible way or three that it could happen and make sense, but we’ll have to wait to see if Alex wants to go there.)

  • David Welbourn

By the way, just for fun, pretend that Kyle doesn’t know that his fly is open and reread this comic page in that context.

  • Food_Fight

Seeing Kyle being confident really makes me feel happy.

  • Rin

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF VARIOUS GODS, LET SPOOKY BE OKAY

I swear if he dies, I’m gonna wreak havoc for months.

  • Could be nurture instead of nature. ^_^

  • Horns and sharp teeth are apparently retractable, as for the red skin, that could be an adaptation to the environment in hell or a consequence of only channeling hell-fire.

  • lollerilol

and there it is, not even one person died in the whole apocalyptic scenario.
    Fourth rate comic at best.

    • NoiseShaper

A whole lot of villain minions have apparently died during the finale.

And if your primary metric for the quality of a comic is the number of heroes who die along the way, you’re not doing yourself any favours.

    • timemonkey

Your logic does not resemble our Earth logic.

    • HermeticallySealed

Standard Edgelord mentality; something is only good if there is death, apathy and solemn brooding stares into side panels. Yawn.
Seriously, for someone who is constantly derisive of this material, you sure do waste a lot of your time reading it. Normal people tend not to bother with stuff which they dislike.

  • glennbird

We were told a LONG time ago that the military and (I assume) adult superheroes were on the way, and our heroes were supposed to hold the bad guys off until the forces arrived. Um…..are they taking the bus????? They are certainly taking their sweet time in getting there to help. As a matter of fact, there logically should be positive entities with as much power as Satan (other than his little boy). Obviously, there are certain “rules” that kept Satan confined to his realm. There also should be adult superheroes of equal power to Duncan and the Platinum Goddess. Where ARE they while our kids our fighting the battle alone? On that bus? I realize that this comic is about the “Young Protectors,” and not the older heroes….but it makes no sense that they are left to fight the biggest villains alone. The only adult superheroes we have seen so far were portrayed as bumbling and cocky. Having said all that…I am happy the battle is over for now and we can get on with a new story. I do agree with lollerilol…… even JK Rowlings allowed a few characters to die. Your zero body count, even among the nobodies, after all that violence, is ridiculous.

    • Klaus

Fifty minutes before the timer went off, Commander said that the military would take at least an hour to get there. Not much more than an hour has passed since then. As for the adult heroes, they are attending the Calamity of Infinite Super-Whatsit out in space. (chapter one, page 27).

      • glennbird

Klaus, thanks. It certainly feels like it has been MANY hours, but ok….that helps. I don’t see why the adult heroes would all be totally absent during the biggest crisis to hit earth….I don’t remember the Calamity thing…but again, ok. I’ll accept it as a weak excuse….an hour for our military to arrive? Zero adult heroes to help? Ok….at least you explained it. Thanks, again. One question remains: The powerful entity that originally put and kept Satan in his realm….where is/are he/she/they?

        • davefragments

          Either:
          a) Time passes when you are having fun
          or b)
Time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so

          • Klaus

As long as fun is no illusion, we should be OK.

        • Stephen Hutchison

Well, technically, it’s been several years. This chapter started June 6, 2014. So if it feels like a long time? It has been.
          http://webcomics.yaoi911.com/typ/ete-ch3-page-32/

          • Actually, the first page of Chapter 5 was posted Oct 28, 2016.

          • Klaus

It was 7 October 2014 that the military was at least an hour away.

A few pages ago, I counted the number of pages in the entire book — “The Young Protectors: Engaging the Enemy”

All of these are with their respective title pages:
            Prologue — 28 pages
            Chapter 1 — 62
            Interlude 1 — 17
            Chapter 2 — 50
            Bonus Comic 1 — 28
            Chapter 3 — 123
Truth or Dare bonus — 27
            Fly Boy bonus — 51
            Chapter 4 — 79
            Interlude 2 — 7
            Chapter 5 — 50
Total 522 pages with title pages

Even at two a week, that’s 211 weeks

          • Well, with the double pages it is more like 514 on the website….

Speaking of which, I am getting behind again and need to update the V count spreadsheet….

          • davefragments

I look forward to who wins the V and their count tonight. I missed that.

I count pages like a book counts pages. If you open a book and let it lie on the table — the left page is even the right page is odd. An illustration that crosses the gutter lies on two pages. It’s a “printing” thing.
For instance, a full page brochure with 32 pages is printed on one proof both front and back. I “Been there done that.”

          • I am only slightly behind.

Danish, AJ, you, Sapfo, and I are in the top five which before updating has a gap of 87 between the highest (Danish 103) and the lowest (me 16). There is a gap of 20 between 4th and 5th. This is of course, before being updated.

          • Stephen Hutchison

            V count?

          • Sapfo

V stands for virgin. It´s the first comment on a new page. It is kind of a competition who get´s to maket make the first comment on a new page.

          • Klaus

You may want to recalculate that.

          • davefragments

            fixed

          • Yes, but they specifically said “this chapter” and this chapter started 10-28-16. ^_^ 😛

          • Stephen Hutchison

Yes, I used the wrong word, and I apologize for that in a way-too-long reply 🙂

          • ^_^

          • Stephen Hutchison

You are correct. I kinda lost count of which chapter we were in because there wasn’t a significant change in location or action. Whether this is because Alex is doing too good a job of smooth segue between elements, or because for some reason the chapter breaks weren’t obvious to me after a protracted time, can’t tell. I just don’t sense natural chapter breaks here. In my head, the narrative of the fight begins with that part in 3 and skips over all the chapter breaks and interposed material.

Alex writes cinematically and follows conventions that go back to the days of radio drama, and this is not a bad thing. This comic is an example of serial storytelling fed to an audience in limited pieces over a period of time. I mentioned this in the past; he structures the story along classic arc structures, especially dwelling on challenge/setback/overcome and challenge/false-hope/defeat arcs. These are used to build and relieve dramatic tension, but too many of them in a single episode makes things seem prolonged.

It’s too long to call it an episode, but this story segment, no matter how many chapters and bits it’s cut into, still started in the middle of chapter 3 in mid-2014. The direct conflict with Platinum Priestess and her lackey was initiated then.
I was thinking that if this were to be a print comic, there would be some editorial stomping when chapter 3 went past 100 pages — because even giant-size comics at 80 pages seem a bit too big to hold one continuous story, and those interstitial stories still deserve and need to be includes somewhere.

So this is becoming a bit like that movie that goes on for 120 minutes and you really REALLY regret having gotten the giant size drink to go with your giant size popcorn. Yes, I’m back to the cinema metaphor. I could also go the Rowling metaphor and note how every book got longer and longer, and the movie guys capitalized on that by splitting a single book into two movies (which weakened both halves) but that would suggest that I think Alex is dragging this out to make more money, which … seems unlikely. He can keep our attention with other stories. So he has a reason for why he’s gone so long with this. Perhaps it’s simply that it’s the first time he’s done this scale of story, or he honestly feels that everything needs to be detailed to this degree.

It may seem a bit ungrateful to complain about the amount of great art we’re getting, but this isn’t the Viking years, and the skald telling the story of the conquest of one king by another, battle by battle, with digressions into the personalities of all the characters, that might work for dark, long nights in winter, but we have electricity now, and we have shorter attention spans even when we love the story. When people think this has gone on forever, they’re sorta right. It has gone on for years.

          • davefragments

I posted this above — these pages discuss the timeline of this story:

The Young Protectors and the Commander discuss the military and their options in Chapter 3 starting about page 32 and going on for ten or so pages.

Our two villains talk about planning the whole affair. Their explanation for the event is presented in Chapter three from page 47 to page 65.

          • Stephen Hutchison

For some reason Disqus likes to prioritize comments in non-chronological order even if you tell it not to.

          • davefragments

            yeah.

          • NoiseShaper

It inserts changes always in newest-first order, even if you’ve selected oldest-first view; That’s the bug!

          • Saxon_Brenton

To look at it from a slightly different angle, I once calculated that our pal Shane spent 17 months (real time) tied up on the ground while being drooled over by hellsnakes – even though only 20-30 minutes took place (in-universe) between the two fights.

        • Klaus

The villains, or at least the powerful ones, are out in space too.

    • NoiseShaper

      Laampros is not Satan.

He is not the king of hell, just one king of hell…!

    • glennbird

Wow, thanks, guys/gals for all your replies and input. It is a compliment to Alex that he has such devoted readers who keep up with so many details from so far back. I can’t give it that much energy, but I do enjoy the story very much…and the artwork. It is just my nature to notice what feels like a lack of logic or realism (yes, even in fantasy). I don’t want to nit pick and I see that many of you have answered much of my criticism very well.

      • I’m that same way too, glennbird, so we have that in common. 🙂

Very cool to read you and the other readers having such a gracious discussion about it all.

  • Stephen Hutchison

So now. How are they going to get that big box open?
It’s industrial diamond. Burning it won’t work, because it transmits heat too well because diamond. It’s like a superconductor for thermal. But diamond has this neat quality. Structurally, it’s fragile. Whatever structural defenses PP stuck on it, they’re likely to be broken or strained by now. Mitch could drop a rock on it in the right place and it should cleave into separate pieces. And diamond doesn’t like to make super-sharp edges.

    Hello Campers

    • Saxon_Brenton

      Hi.

      • davefragments

How’s it going? I’ve been relaxing for two days after a long weekend.

        • Saxon_Brenton

The week so far has been fine. I’m going to RPGing tonight, so I expect to get home very late.
And coming up this weekend, I’m planning on doing a lot of pruning in the garden to cut back all the growth that occurred after a very wet March. And on Sunday I plan to go to the theatre release of the season premier of Dr Who.

          • davefragments

My Niece is trying to plan Easter dinner at a restaurant. I keep getting text messages.

          • Saxon_Brenton

We were planning our next Thurs evening dinner as an Easter get together (with extra participants), but then someone had an impulse buy of a new puppy. Said puppy is so young that he has to be babysat, so half the group can’t make it now. The rest of us will continue on, and we might go to one of the nicer restaurants anyway.

          • davefragments

My Niece does that electronic reservation thing. I don’t have it loaded on my phone. 4:45pm on Easter is the time and place.

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Have fun, Saxon!

    • Doki’s computer screen died. Luckily there was an old one that takes up too much desk space for her to use.

      • davefragments

oooh, I’ve never had that happen. I hope you can get it fixed cheaply and easily

        • That would be ideal, but I am unsure how I would go about getting it fixed, if there is anyone locally who could fix it.

      • stickfigurefairytales

Oh no! But I’m glad you at least have one that can act as a backup, even if it’s not ideal.

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Hi Dave!

      • davefragments

        Hi Stick,
Is the city by the lake warm yet?

        • stickfigurefairytales

It was earlier on today, but it’s gotten colder again. Supposed to get down to 41 tonight, then a high of 53 tomorrow. How’re things over your way?

          • davefragments

65 to 70 in the day and 50’s at night. Sometimes colder if it rains.
            Lots of April rain.

          • stickfigurefairytales

Same here. We had a rainy morning but it cleared up in plenty of time for our baseball home opener.

          • davefragments

My Niece does the closed captioning at PNC Park. Her real occupation is stenotype but she also does the captions on the baseball games

          • stickfigurefairytales

            Cool!

          • davefragments

I’ve never been in PNC Park. I can’t say why. I have no good reason. She can’t invite me, either.
            I prefer Symphony and theater

          • stickfigurefairytales

            To each his own, eh?

          • davefragments

            yeah.
I joke that “my car thumps to grand opera” (it really does) but I know that most people would find that awful. They want their to thump to Lady Gaga or whoever is current.

  • Hiya. Been looking through comments, without saying hi first, so hello y’all 🙂

I am beat this morning, after what became a long active day yesterday. It was supposed to be a short day, but got long and involved taking care of a bunch of 3-5 year old kindergarden kids. I have so much respect for people who work in kindergardens, and take care of 20+ of them on a daily basis 🙂
I had fun, but I’m beat.

    • davefragments
