The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 44

105 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 44

Stick a fork in our boy — he is done!

So! Not only was Kyle able to block Laampros’ attack on Tsunami, he was actually able to control the fireball and throw it back! What does it mean? And what else will he be able to do?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • DonnaC

    You tell him Kyle

  • So proud!

    • Pietro7

Proud cubed. Go Kyle Go! Stuff him back to Hell!

  • davefragments

Kyle gets his mojo and throws back Laampros’ fire back at him.
It’s nice to see Kyle with acting self-assured rather than wandering in Laampros’ loser diatribes. I was getting tired of Laampros the Blowhard.

  • Jeff Baker

“I’m done letting monsters try to talk me to death,” Love it!

    • Juliette Leroux

Pretty much what we all thought these last 15 pages…

  • Saxon_Brenton

It’s easy to see that Red Hot is angry. He’s not even bothering to announce the name of his attack in the usual super-sentai/sailor scout method.

On a more serious level: love the line about monsters trying to talk him to death.

    • Curt Clark

Let’s face it; calling this “Fire Soul” would be a LITTLE on the nose.

      • Saxon_Brenton

I was thinking of something along the lines of “Mega Fireball Redirect!”

And in situations like this, multiple exclamation marks will handwave to hide awkward phrasing.

        • You know, sometimes I wish they wouldn’t translate attacks. Even if it is a direct translation, it would sound better if they left it in the original. Those originally in English have no excuse.

  • Zephyr10101

Alex wants the suspense to kill me. I’m positive

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Way to go, Kyle!!

  • I really want Kyle to keep the ears…

    • Arthur Dent

I agree. And maybe the cute little fangs, too.

      • Pietro7

Urk. No fangs. Fangs interfere with kissing, singing, and eating, three of the great pleasures of being alive. No fangs for our boy, let him have pleasure in his life too. He has suffered far more than enough.

        • And having read a book series, and you talking about pleasures, there’s another area where fangs can get in the way *lol*

I’ll just leave my brain in the gutter, and get out of here xD

          • Arthur Dent

They never seemed to have an issue with fangs in _True Blood_… besides, there’s the horns, claws, and knee and elbow spurs that might be quite awkward during certain activities.

          • Klaus

            Such as dressing.

  • EMR updated – http://elanmeetsrafa.com/the-comic/ch31pg17/

mention of physical assault with deadly intent by a parental figure

  • Curt Clark

Hooray! Now he’s Sunfire with a side of Pyro! (That makes me far, far happier than it sounds like it does, I love X-Men) 😀

This is easily shaping up to be my favorite part of the comic; I love the moment in the battle where the hero smacks down the villain’s ideology as well as the villain themselves. And Kyle and Gordon are DELIVERING.

  • Adam Black

Now open a portal back to hell and stuff big Red in it.

    • timemonkey

      Portal’s still open.

  • timemonkey

So, Kyle’s uniform must like magically fireproof. Like it just hit me, Kyle’s been like engulfed in hellfire and normal fire this entire fight and he’s still almost entirely undamaged. Whoever made that outfit deserves a nobel prize.

    • Nahuel Méndez Diodati

      Hexadecimal <3

    • davefragments

      Edna Mode

      • HermeticallySealed

Notice; no-one on the team has a cape.

  • Sapfo

Nobody puts Kyle in the corner!

  • Laampros has nooo feel for ‘too soon’.

It’s less than a day ago since Kyle got screwed over, in several ways, by Duncan, Sircei and Laampy himself, and at some point he’s going to let all that anger out. Laampy tried to make him into a person of pure rage, to let the beast out, and he got what he wanted. Almost anyway.

Problem for Laampy, is that Kyle did let his inner beast out. On him.

  • Wyrmidon

    Great balls of fire! Finally!

And let’s hope this time it will be over, this scene was dragging a little bit.

  • Kyle has had it with villain monologues. No more telling him what he should do, what he is and how he should feel. There’s only so many monologues you want in one day, and Kyle’s limit is passed.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

I bet we’re all pretty much at our limit for that. 😉

  • Cman65

Red Hot turns it up to 11

  • Klaus

Kyle, talking its oponent to death didn’t work for the monster, and it is not going to work for you.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

That’s more Kirk Summation/Pre-Ass Kicking One-Liner territory, he’s summing up how much of a loser his father actually is and declaring his intent to put the beat down on him.

  • Aitsuki

Careful with those spikes, Kyle! You’ll take a flaming eye out!

  • Jeldenil

Do I spot a phoenix in that fireball?

    • I can see it now! Cool!

      • Jeldenil

        Help will always be given…

  • I don’t think winding Kyle up over Duncan was the best line for Laampros to take. If nothing else, it’s a reminder of the difference between a man who was doing the wrong thing but with good intentions, and a being that revels in death and destruction. Compare and contrast Duncan’s speech about being glad Kyle’s got friends like the Young Protectors, and Laampros’s attitude…

  • Klaus

What happened to “It is my fire, and it does my will”?

    • timemonkey

      For which of them?

      • Klaus

Laampros said that a couple of pages back.

  • bronakopdin

    I’m cheering really hard here!!!
    GO KYLE!!!!
And he’S right about the “know about me” parts… as if “knowing” someone was so easy for either Laampros or Duncan

  • Nate

    Ah, there’s nothing like a father-son game of catch….

  • Yeahhhh go Kyle! You tell him!

  • Madock345

When you’re so surprised to be saved you develop telepathy…

Really dig Kyle’s attitude here. Really feels like Laampost is in for an ass kicking.

  • Juliette Leroux

    Isn’t spandex-asbestos mix potentially carcinogenic?

  • Rob Roy

“Sure as hell”? Hmmm… I think Kyle is surer than Hell/ Laampros at this moment.

  • Jason Moon

“I’m done letting monsters talk me to death!” Isn’t that called The Hannibal Lecture?(It may not be, I just love the trope name) http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HannibalLecture

Of course the response is Shut up, Hannibal! http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShutUpHannibal

  • D. G.

Hmmm. I hope Kyle develops some new power that can help him against Laampros. *cross my fingers.

  • So, Duncan still has a long way to go, seeing how Kyle puts him in the same boat as Daddy dearest.

    Honestly? Kyle? sure as Hell?

    • timemonkey

Pretty sure the only place Duncan is going is to prison.

    • Klaus

Kyle has good reason to be very sure of Hell.

  • Karol Chmielewski

YOU GO GUYYY! Kyle is awesome in this page so cool yet so hot 😉

  • TwilightDreamer

O_O….uh oh….ok everyone, please exit the furnace in an orderly………oh forget this….RUUUUNNN!!
    XP

    • davefragments

When someone yells “RUN!” then you “RUN!”

      hint: {movie reference}

      • TwilightDreamer

        I’m just getting a head start…. ;P

  • Pikinanou

    Come on! Finish him!

  • kuku
  • timemonkey

Unless he’s got some allies we don’t know about not really. He’s been depowered, remember.

    • NoiseShaper

      Sure, but for how long?

      • timemonkey

        Until his execution?

        • NoiseShaper

I don’t expect his power loss to be permanent…!

          • timemonkey

Be a bit pointless if it didn’t last. Plus like I said, Duncan tried to sell the world to demons, that’ll earn hima death sentence so even if it’s not permanent he likely won’t live long enough for them to come back.

  • davefragments

This DEADPOOL video left me aghast, violated, physically & mentally.
    Hint: silly fun and NSFW.
Death, destruction and dismemberment — Sung to the tune of “Gaston” from Beauty and the Beast… and a unicorn dies at the end. I think Wolverine performs a circumcision (not too sure of that). NSFW

    • I kind of want more?

      • davefragments

        I know that feeling.

  • Klaus

Actually I think Duncan knew Kyle rather well. “A truly good person”, he calls him. Laampros just doesn’t get that.

    • Saxon_Brenton

Yes. Moreover, it occurs to me that since Annihilator is a career supervillain and therefore has fought ‘truly good people’ before, he probably has a better idea of how persistent they are. (Just ask how the fight within the last half hour went.)
By contrast I can only guess at what sort of Laampros might have faced in the past. Possibly there are skirmishes or wars between hell lords. But that’s a long way from being thwarted by a superhero.

  • Jac

I have heart-eyes for this page

  • davefragments

    Hello Campers.
How’s it going for you tonight?

    • Klaus

Not so good. I woke up and thought it was morning. I turned on the computer, and it says 3:25. So back to bed I go.

      • davefragments

That was my last night. Sleepless in Pittsburgh but no romance

      • davefragments

Cute. MY niece’s cat that has only met me twice so far, still leaves claw marks in my legs. I think I scare it.

      • Saxon_Brenton

Okay, the most recent two pages probably aren’t indicative, since it seems unlikely that the cat is the focus character of the webcomic. Nevertheless, that looks like something I’ll have to archive binge in order to make a proper assessment.

Dammit Doki, why do you keep throwing cool webcomics my way?

        • ^_^ Jojo is a poor blind kitty that has to get acquainted with a whole new place.

        • But yeah, the comics main characters are Milo and Liam. ^_^ Alfonz (Liam’s cousin) is great though.

          • And Hebert, don’t go and forget alien student Hebert!

    • jreed3842

      I’m doing well!
      Actually remembered to camp tonight!

      • davefragments

        Good to see you

    • Saxon_Brenton

Good. It’s not raining just at the moment (my goodness It’s been wet over the past few weeks. I read in the paper that the mushroom pickers are having a great time because of it.)

      • davefragments

        now that’s good news

    • timemonkey

I have a massive blister in a very unfortunate place that burst.

      • davefragments

I hope it gets better fast.

        • timemonkey

Me too. It’s been hurting much less lately so I’m taking that as a good sign.

          • davefragments

            Good to hear that.

    • Squishy

I spent most of the day taking care of a kitty with medical problems 🙁 but the rest of it was spent making the best pasta sauce in the world. And now I’m working on jackfruit faux pulled pork.

      • davefragments

Pasta is good. Pulled pork is good.
Sick kitty needs to get well.

        • Squishy

Yeah, she has a bladder infection and she’s an old kitty.

        • Squishy

          How is your evening?

          • davefragments

            Quiet.
A friend asked if I would look at a paper he is trying to write on transgendered people. I said yes.
I stopped bashing republicans on the political boards because I had a tiny tantrum at the TV.
I finished reading a book titled “SKYTHANE” by Scott Coatsworth.
And I’m watching for the next page which always makes me feel good.

          • Squishy

Cool beans. What is SKYTHANE about?

          • davefragments

Well, the world has been split in two. One half orbits one sun and a second half orbits another. The story is about two men who meet and share the fate of restoring order. One is a “Skythane” with wings and the other a colonist from another planet.
It’s a fast read, paranormal, not too sic-fi.

          • Squishy

Sounds pretty interesting. I have quite a backlog of books I need to finish myself.

          • davefragments

Coatsworth runs the Queer Sci Fi Facebook page and asked about the technical aspects of a world split in half. Me being chemical engineer and very good at mathematics and science offered some information.

          • Squishy

            For science!

    PAGE 1 – Exposition
(1.1) Medium shot. Louie, Prof. Metsama and Fr. Doonan are still standing outside the gym, with a crowd still in the background. Louie still has their poking through the force field surrounding the gym.
Doonan: “It doesn’t work that way!”
Louie (rolling eyes): “I’m not asking whether it works that way. I’m asking whether the spell powering the force field could be set up to work that way!”
(1.2) Medium shot, focusing on Prof Metsama.
Metsama: “No, actually, that’s what you are implying. Asking if the force field might have a loophole that let’s through someone who fits into more than one mortal/demon/angel category implies that you think that’s what happening with you. We might not have time to argue about it right now, but don’t try and talk past the subject with bafflegab.”
(1.3) Medium shot, whole group. Metsama has her arms crossed.
Louie (mouth quirked a rueful lopsided grin): “Huh. Well spotted. Okay then, really quickly. Demons are usually at the bottom of the energy incline. They tend to be parasitic, and the worlds they live in aren’t energy efficient and don’t have what you’d call proper ecologies. Nasty wastelands caused by the second law of thermodynamics running amok, for the most part.”
(1.4) Medium shot, focusing on Louie. Louie looks over their shoulder at the lawn gardens between university buildings.
Louie: “So, anyway, when I came to Earth and settled down, I thought: I like this place. I don’t want to see it get worse.”
(1.5) Closeup shot, focusing on Louie, who has turned back at Metsama and Doonan, and has a determined expression on their face.
Louie: “So I made a vow to myself to work to keep this world from being flushed down the metaphorical toilet.”

    PAGE 2 – Exposition, continued.
(2.1) Medium shot. Louie, Prof. Metsama and Fr. Doonan are still standing outside the force field surrounding the gym. Louie is scratching the back of their head with their tail is a way that makes Louie look a bit embarrassed.
Louie: “Anyway, after that I discovered that little party trick with repairing things by making them fall back together. That’s almost the exact opposite of what demons tend to be about, since they’re usually so good at destruction. It wasn’t something I’d even been aware was possible, and certainly wasn’t anything I was hoping for. But I’ve kind of taken it as an indicator that I’m working in the right direction…”
    Doonan: “Towards what? Angelhood?”
(2.2) Medium shot, focusing on Louie.
Louie (embarrassed, and therefore behaving scornfully): “Ahem. Have you considered that the next rung up from demon is probably mortal? Long way to go to get to angelic.”
(2.3) Medium shot, focusing on Doonan.
Doonan (arch expression): “I dunno. I don’t seem to recall defying the second law of thermodynamics as being something that mortals regularly get to do either. Unless you count saints. Or the Buddhist bodhisattvas.”
(2.4) Medium shot, group still standing outside gym.
Louie (looking over shoulder into force field): “There you go then. Lot’s of examples that break the rules. But I’d better stop wasting time and go and investigate what’s going on in there.”
Metsama: “Are you sure? It might be dangerous.”
Louie: “Yes, I know. But the thing is, if I made a vow to be a meddling do-gooder, then I actually have to meddle and do good when a problem like this crops up. If I only do it when it’s convenient and safe, then that kind of runs against the whole point of the thing, doesn’t it?”
    Doonan: “Just be careful, then.”
    Louie: “Will do.”
