The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 38

120 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 38

Now that’s just mean!

Over on the Patreon page, I’ve just posted something I’ve very excited about. So far, the boys of The Young Protectors have gotten a lot of love with our Patreon pin-ups. But there are a ton of Commander fans out there, and one of my most frequent requests is for a new Commander pin-up.

Well, I love Commander too, so I decided to commission painter Ren Tu to create a fun, new action scene with the leader of The Young Protectors—and I think he knocked it out of the park! Take a look at the sneak preview:

Patrons seeing the full image have said: “Holy smokes she looks SO awesome!!!!!!!!”, “I love the color choice and the lighting.  It’s really wonderful!”,  and “…loving Ren Tu’s style, and the Commander looks so badass!”

$5+ Patrons can download the full mobile wallpaper version of the pin-up immediately, and $10+ Patrons will be sent a high-res version with over double the resolution on the 10th of January.

And that’s in addition to the incredible fully nude, Full Monty Annihilator painting by Rum Locker!

Here’s an image of all of February’s rewards:

All of these pin-up rewards will only be available for the next month.

There are lots of great benefits to being a Patron (you can see them all here along with an explanation of what the heck Patreon is), and you’d really be helping me out if you became one too. If you’re enjoying our work here and would like to see it continue (and would like to get access to all kinds of special benefits),

please take a moment to watch the video on my Patreon page and consider becoming a Patron.

So! Kyle has his father on his heels, but dear old Dad is now trying to use his son’s memories against him! What affect will this have on our firebending hero? What other secrets will we learn? And gosh, can Young Kyle look any more adorable?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Meanie.. bringing up bad memories.

    • Wow.. Good timing, since I deided to postpone/skip cqmping today. I’ve been awake since just after 6am (now 6:08), loaded the page as very first thing getting out of bed, refreshed an there it was all new.

I haven’t even been on the toilet yet LOL .. decided to do it in opppsite order this morning xD
      (Possible TMI)

  • Saxon_Brenton

Ahhh! A traumatic Secret Origin Flashback!

  • Morgan

Oh noooo… That’s awful. And you know, you’re a terrible father, Laampy.

  • Nate

    Laampros = asshole.

    • davefragments

We knew that yesterday (in this comic’s yesterday)…
After all, it is less than a day since Laampros’ encounter with Duncan and his drooling over Kyle.

    • timemonkey

He’s a demon king, that pretty much goes without saying.

  • Odysseus154

that’s what you get for beating your sinful meat, Kyle!

    • Cipher

Is it wrong that I laughed? Because I totally laughed at that.

  • David Welbourn

Looks like the chance for a quick end to this battle has passed, and instead, venture into … memory lane? I guess this sidetrip is necessary at this time for some reason, but darned if I can figure out why this, why now.

  • Jeldenil

Just blast him again, Kyle. You don’t need to listen to his guilting.

    • Saxon_Brenton

I’m not completely sure he’s guilting. I kind of get the vibe that it’s another example of Laampros not understanding human emotions. He seems to think that this sort of destruction is all that the flame powers are good for, and that Red should revel in it and be proud of the damage he’s done.

If so it’s one of the most clueless “Join me on the Dark Side” pitches I’ve seen.

  • timemonkey

How long was Kyle with his foster family? It does seem a bit odd that they’d cut him out completely if he’d been there a while, especially if they knew he had powers. I wonder what new info will be revealed.

    • Klaus

And just when he needs them most.

    • Don’t know how long he was with foster family, but the night he burned his sister was the night his powers emerged… At least, I believe so, from what I remember right now (anyone correct me if you know I’m wrong).

      • Klaus

That is right. He was twelve.

  • Klaus

  • Sounds a little wrong, since it’s a sad page, but I’m delighted that we’re getting a touch of background story. Every piece of background/personal info helps build on the knowledge, of how a character is now and why.

  • lalalala he can’t hear you Laampy. Kyle don’t listen to him.

  • Jonni

Someone should really kick him in the ShadowLoins, he’s good with the low shots.

  • Mary Klemzak

But that was years ago. Maybe she can understand a bit better, now that they’re both a bit older? He looks to be about 12/13 there, and she maybe around 10? When his powers, through puberty, came out? By accident, and were like Smallville’s Clark Kent, and wasn’t very controllable? He’s 18 now, so she should be a couple years younger still, probably is around 15/16? Still young and bitter, but may miss him, even though he unintentionally hurt her. I don’t remember when, maybe someone can remind me. I know it’s in the comic somewhere towards the beginning. Might be in Wikipedia or TV tropes.

    • Klaus

He has a magical healer friend now. Could make a difference.

      • Mary Klemzak

        For sure! Definitely!

      • Mary Klemzak

*prayer hands to the YAOI gods*

  • Zephyr10101

    Now that’s just low

  • TwilightDreamer

YOUCH!!! DX Now that hurt the heartstrings!!
Kyle! Don’t listen to him, block him out! He wants to get in your head!!
Wow this battle is more of a rally than I thought! Back and forward…back and forward….I love it! 😀

  • Juliette Leroux

That’s a low blow, sir, very low. Exactly what you would expect from a demon Lord.

    • Klaus

Laampros: “It is rather good, isnt it?”

  • Klaus

Laampros is revelling in pain and destruction. Does he consider Spooky an abominatiom because he finds healing abominable? Yet according to the Platinum Priestess, hi stastes are hardly bestial, and most of the earths population would survive several years of his rule.

    • timemonkey

Spooky survived a year in Hell, apparently demons like to play with shiney new toys.

      • Klaus

That may not have been in Laampros’ territory, though.

        • timemonkey

Still an established pattern of behaviour.

  • Miwa

He is taking this tough love thing a bit too far.

  • I’ve been watching That 70s Show too much, soooo…
    “That’s a burn!”

  • bronakopdin

    He has a sister?!?!?!?!
    and oh my, even though I can understand the sister, too, I feel for Kyle, it must have really hurt him… but then if I remember correctly the parents died, too, in that fire, was it? Gosh… it is a really bad situation and one can’t really blame anyone for this ;_____;

    • timemonkey

Nope, this was his foster family, they kicked him out over this.

      • bronakopdin

well I do know he was in a foster family (With Laampy being the dad it is obvious anyway but I remembered from the beginning), but I still can’t remember that there were sibligs involved, even foster ones.
And didn’t the foster parents even die in the fire? I guess it was less being kicked out and rather given into different custody as there wasn’t much choice?
Though I guess that foster sister ended up elsewhere then.
But I am not certain anymore whether the parents really died… but seriously if not then you’d expect them to be at the girls side there, too, right?

        • timemonkey

No, they didn’t die, they threw him out. There’s a link to the page where he talks about it on this one,

        • davefragments

          Kyle’s story about his family:

          • bronakopdin

I totally forgot the details, thanks for the link ^^

    • Klaus

Burns over 30% of your body is really bad. There was a 16 year old boy here in Denmark who was attacked by burning gasoline a month ago. He has burns over 30% of his body. He has not yet been able to talk to the psychologist who is supposed to help him with the emotional trauma. The painkillers makes him unable to engage in meaningful communication..

      • bronakopdin

        goodness… I hope he’ll make it!!! And I mean with the trauma and all, it is hard to find your way back to normal life after things like this ;____;

  • Nate

Now that I’ve had a chance to take a closer look…

Lil Kyle needs hugs. Badly. I mean, just look at that face. 🙁

(Big Kyle, too, but he has friends who will be more than happy to supply them. 😉 )

    • They’ll just have to watch for those nasty elbow shards…

  • Toli Bera

This is just a distraction Kyle! Ask him about his ties to Russ- oops. wrong embodiment of evil.

  • Hans Niemand

And now, right through the “lack of human understanding” hole, what time is it?
Why readers, it’s parental re-education time!

  • Saxon_Brenton

I’m thinking that Laampros has just sealed his own fate.

It seems that Laampros is continuing to try and corrupt Red Hot (or possibly weaken his resolve by bringing up traumatic past events). I don’t think either will work. Laampros had already shown he doesn’t have a clear grasp of human emotions. He doesn’t understand that Red Hot has already shown six years of awesomely high will power – easily enough to resist corruption IMHO. And he doesn’t seem to grasp that after filling Red with hellflame that makes him angry all the time, that showing him past tragedies related to his powers is only going to make Red more angry.

I didn’t realise it up until now, but I’ve been more-or-less expecting Red Hot to be following the plan of the rest of the team to push Laampros through the gate and simply get him off Earth. Now it occurs to me that Red might try (and succeed) at a killing blow.

    • timemonkey

Maybe he’s trying to make Kyle angry deliberately? Maybe that’ll cause Kyle to slip into shooting Hellfire instead which will give him a chance to recover.

  • Earl Patterson

    So, Kyle have sister

    • Jason Moon

He almost DIDN’T, if this flashback is any indicator.

    • NoiseShaper

His foster sister back then, apparently.

    • We were told about Kyle’s foster sister during Kyle’s first date with Duncan.

  • camelotcrusade

Whoa, whoa. Wrong turn, Laampros. Go back to embarrassing him for Spooky-lust. “Remember that time you saw him naked in the shower and…”

  • Jason Moon

Seriously Laampros, this is the LAST moment from Kyle’s past that you would want to tear up over and say with pride, “That’s my boy!” Seriously, bad call dude.

    • Ruben

He is obviously distracting Kyle so he would loose focus. Classic strategy.

      • NoiseShaper

Sure, but at the same time Laampros himself is also distracted from the other fighters…!

      • Daveo

  • Baby Kyle is just too adorable! I want hug him and pinch his cheeks.

    • Sanbai

You take the left cheek, and I’ll take the right! We can instill a pinch-fest on him!

      • Pietro7

Poor Kyle’s gonna have some bruised cheeks . . .

  • John

Step 1; get someone mad at you
Step 2; Tell them their power can only destroy
    Step 3; ?
Step 4; rule together as father and son

What the HELL can step 3 be? SERIOUSLY? I mean Laampy just told Kyle that his power is one of destruction (setting aside the obvious point that destruction isn’t always bad) but doing that AFTER Kyle is ALREADY mad at him seems a bit stupid.

    • Cipher

Step 3: Bring up the time he severely burned his little sister just because he had an orgasm.

    • timemonkey

Step 3: Direct his rage towards humanity

  • davefragments

Kyle reveals his discovery of his powers on this page:
That’s just after the Chinese lunch was interrupted and well before Duncan used Kyle to cross the dimensions and make the deal with Laampros.

Now my interpretation what Laampros is doing here is not that Laampros spied or watched Kyle during his life but that Laampros has read Kyle’s memories and wants to use his guilt against him. This image probably isn’t the reality but it is Kyle’s memory.
Laampros’ game has always seemed to me to be using the fault s of people to his best advantage and/or beat his subjects into submission by demoralizing them.
What happens next, I don’t know and I’ve stopped writing down my wrong guesses.

  • Michael Losti

To all those who wonder “what the hell” Laampros is trying to achieve by taunting Kyle, please consider that he isn’t a mortal who runs the risk of being killed by an enraged Kyle. He is a (the?) Prince of Hell, and Wrath, as a Deadly Sin, would fall into his domain.
Personally, I do see the danger of Kyle letting anger infest the very core of his being. It starts with anger at Laampros for what he is saying, it might go on to anger at his foster parents for abandoning him and even end with anger at his sister for disowning him (anger is silly like that, but rarely in the funny way).

If I may end with a great quote from Bioshock:
“We all make our choices, but in the end, our choices make us.”

    • Well put. But I see it more like Laampros trying to reinstill in Kyle the fear of his own powers… So that he subconsciously restrain them, or something.

  • Don’t you hate it when you can’t find anything but ‘default’ bouquets a the hospital flower shop?

  • D. G.

It seems to me that Laampros is making a big mistake bringing up Kyle’s trauma. It reinforces how bad Kyle feels when someone is hurt by his fire. This would only make him that much more determined to not turn evil.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

It also hampers his ability to use to hurt his father as well, reminding him that he doesn’t want to use his powers to cause harm.

      • D. G.

        Good point.

  • Minyassa

Yeah, but the shadowed area is way too big.

  • Ethan Moore

Oh man my heart why ya’ll gotta do this to me

  • jreed3842

  • Nirgal

Am I the only one amazed by how well Kyle’s hair matches Laampros’ skin?

    • NoiseShaper

I think that’s just momentarily through the same fire being reflected off both.

      • Klaus

There is no fire in the hospital room.

        • NoiseShaper

ok, but Laampros normally is a real redskin; Only the fire makes him somewhat similar.

    • Daveo

Have I missed a WHOLE section? I’ve read from the very beginning and I don’t know the part about Laampros being Kyle’s pop????

      • Alt+F7

Do you remember when Kyle and Duncan were in hell briefly? That’s where it was revealed.

        • Daveo

Yes indeed. But nothing more. Alex is keeping us in suspense 😉

      • davefragments

Back in chapter one (about page 18, I think) Kyle talked about how he caused a disaster for his foster family wen he was 12 years old.

Then when Laampros is picking on Duncan when Duncan has used Kyle to travel through the dimensions, Laampros announces to the world that he is Kyle’s father. That’s chapter 2 page 35.

Access the pages from the “Archive” tab at the top of the page

      • Daveo

That’s awesome you two. Thanks. I know of these references. I just thought there was a WHOLE lot more from Alex that I’d missed! 😉

        • timemonkey

Kyle also confirmed it with Spooky afterward and Daddy’s been talking about it the entire time he’s been here.

  • I suspect Laampros is attempting to distract Kyle with talk about his greatest shame. Perhaps that “feeble Earth flame” is doing more than Laampy lets on? Tricking Kyle to falter, to feel shame instead of anger weakens Kyle’s flame. If so, then Kyle needs to fight through it–use what Laampy Dearest is doing to grow stronger and pour on the heat!

  • Daveo

WHAT A SCUMBAG!!! Kyle is better/ bigger than THAT!! In his heart ❤️ he KNOWS it wasn’t intentional!! I say finish Laampros off!! You don’t get to CHOOSE your biological parents. So no love loss here.

  • Richard Grant Muir

Such a tortured child… I felt all the feels with this one.

  • Dekira

omg that was a LOW blow there Lampy, a low blow .

  • Hamish C

I get the feeling this will backfire and only anger Kyle and strengthen his resolve. I certainly hope it does. From personal experience, nothing makes me more stubborn and determined than someone trying to use emotions to manipulate action — and transparently at that!

  • timemonkey

    Question is, who’s mommy?

    • Yeah, I think that is on everyone’s mind….though what if Kyle doesn’t really have a mother? What if Laampros created Kyle and managed to sneak him onto Earth to be his ticket out of heck.

      • timemonkey

Then it’s weird how human Kyle is and how much weaker he is.

        • We don’t know exactly how he created Kyle, he could have made him to be strong, but not strong enough to be a legitimate threat to him. Or that might have been his plan at least.

          • NoiseShaper

Interesting theory, but I don’t think he would be this human in that case.

          • You cannot plan for everything and being separated from his home dimension could have effected that. We do not know how growing up on Earth instead of heck affected Kyle.

It is just something to throw out there really because Kyle’s mother has never been mentioned except in the comments to my knowledge.

          • NoiseShaper

Yeah, we don’t know, but my bet would be that she does actually exist.

          • Anything is possible.

        • Klaus

He is still very young. Give him a few centuries, and he may grow into his strength.

  • KatKaleen

Don’t fall for it, Kyle! You never wanted to hurt anybody! You have a good heart!
    Laamps is just desperate!
    *biting nails*

  • KatKaleen

    Now I am confused. O_O
Yeah, how did a giant demon/devil thing impregnate a human woman?! Or did he create Kyle in some other way? Although, legend tells of Incubi (male) and Succubi (female), demons that have sex with sleeping people. Maybe that’s what happened?

    • NoiseShaper

According to various stories demons can disguise themselves if they want to, so he probably has some less conspicuous outfits at his disposal, too…

  • Jeff Baker

    Ow! That’s gotta burn!

Shane And The Hellsnakes – 15th Bite
(A Young Protectors occult sitcom fanfic. Inspired by the stories of AMW comics.)

    This mini arc:
    13th // || 14th // (rest of urls at end)

PAGE 1 – Quiet drinks at a bar
(1.1) Medium shot set inside a bar. Matt and Dewey are seated, and Shane is walking back with three glasses in his hand.
    Shane: “Here you go.”
    Matt: “Thanks.”
Shane: “So how are things going with Alice?”
(1.2) Medium shot with all three still seated in the bar. Dewey is using his tail to lift his glass.
Matt: “Pretty good. I’ve been helping her with some of the weird sh!t problems that crop up. I’ve gotten to the point where I can recognise most of the weirdie things without my common sense getting in the way. Hanging out with you and your snakes has helped get practice in.”
(1.3) Medium shot with all three still seated in the bar.
    Dewey: “Hiss?”
Matt: “Dewey, you’re an intelligent snake who can ride a motorbike and who has a start-up company in slood engineering. People aren’t just being ‘polite’ when they don’t comment on that sort of thing.”
Shane: “Makes you wonder how much weirdness there is that people don’t see. And how much of it is misinterpretted by the people who can only see some of it.”
(1.4) Scene change. Cut to a medium shot of a room where there are two people talking.
First person (somewhat overwrought): “I’m telling you, David Icke was right! Alien reptoids are using human meat-suit disguises to infiltrate human society!”
Second person: “Naw, that’s over-complicating things. They’re just intelligent dinosaurs created here on Earth by a government blackops program.”

    PAGE 2 – More drinks
(2.1) Medium shot with Shane, Dewey and Matt still seated in the bar.
Matt: “Gotta tell you though, there are times when I worry about getting into this stuff without any sort of backup that I could call on.”
(2.2) Medium shot with all three still seated in the bar.
Shane: “You think it’s more dangerous than police work?”
Matt (looking into his glass as he thinks out loud): “Not really. Sometimes it’s hard to compare. I was thinking more along the lines of, if we screw up there’ll be no-one else who’d even know to pick up the slack. I mean, this isn’t some show like Buffy or Supernatural where everything’s a potential disaster that always gets solved, even if it’s by the skin of your teeth.”
(2.3) Medium shot with all three still seated in the bar.
Matt: “Although come to think of it, Blake’s Seven had the classic downer ending where almost the entire cast got gunned down dead by the bad guys.”
(2.4) Medium shot with all three still seated in the bar.
Shane (straight faced): “I’m not familiar with that particular pizza topping.”
Matt (rolling eyes in exasperation): “You’re deliberately not getting all these pop culture references, aren’t you?”

For some strange reason, this week I watched three movies — “Manchester by the Sea,” “The Accidental Tourist,” and tonight, “The Help” … and in the windstorm on Wednesday, a 25 ft evergreen on my property fell over on its side. It missed everything and is laying down on the job in the yard…
Tonight I hope for happier things from the update page.

    • At least it had bad aim as well as being lazy… 🙂

      • davefragments

It’s the third evergreen that I’ve lost in the past few years. The first one died. The second one, a 6000 gallon water truck slid down the ice and took it out, and this was an inch of rain and wind that doed it.

        • Bummer! One year, back when I had horses and was well still a teenager, I was driving out to my trainers place. She lived in the middle of the various orchards in Moorpark and these various orchards were surrounded by HUGE Eucalyptus trees. They were supposed to be wind breakers…hahahaha… Yeah, that year, the wind took down a whole bunch of them. That was a shame, they were really big and beautiful trees.

    • LOVE ‘The Help’ (here it was called Niceville), but sorry about the tree. Good thing it didn’t create any damage in the fall.

      • davefragments

I’m glad it didn’t fall across the driveway. At least I don’t have to call a tree service right away. There was lots of tree damage around Western PA.

  • davefragments

  • Ha! True.

  • *lol* I read new comments here, went on to check a couple other comics sites, and just realized that I forgot to say hello here.

Well, good morning from not fully-awake me 😉

    • davefragments

      Good morning

    • Morning Ms. Wolf

    • Apparently Doki passed out after eating an early dinner and then slept for roughly 9-10 hours. -_-

  • davefragments
  • davefragments

I like to think it did.
I intend to sing “O Tannenbaum” over it and light a candle when it’s chopped apart.

    • NoiseShaper

      I’m sure it’ll appreciate that!

  • Justin White

That really would be a traumatic ordeal to go through, 🙁 pooor kyle

  • Dorianne Wendy Marsh

    She has hair, though?
