The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 32

107 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 32

Is that an angel I see falling from the heavens?

So! It’s a page without dialogue! And that blessed silence doesn’t seem to be doing our heroes any good. Flyboy has crashed and burned. The entire team is down from Laampros’ massive attack.

But wait—it’s not the entire team. Tsunami is still on his feet! Do you think he’ll enjoy his alone-time with Kyle’s Dad?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Librarican

    Go water!

    • Librarican

      My first virgin!!!!!
      *Happy dance*

      • Congratz!

      • stickfigurefairytales

        Congratulations!!!

      • davefragments

        congrats

    • stickfigurefairytales

I couldn’t help reading this in Ralph Wiggum’s voice (“Go banana!”) and that made me laugh.

      • Librarican

        I was thinking Captain Planet….

        • stickfigurefairytales

          Heart!!

          • Nate

And suddenly, I’m seeing the YP as Voltron.

Amanda, of course, forms the head.

          • Mitch would have to be Pidge. Amanda would be more Allura I think. Spooky would be Shiro. Fluke would be more Lance-ish. Tsu-Tsu would be Keith. Kyle would be Hunk.

Though I guess a case could be made for Spooky being Allura and Amanda being Shiro….

          • Curt Clark

Having watched onyl a little of it (first three episodes), Gordon feels more like Hunk, and Kyle more like Keith to me.

Of course, I LIKE all of TYP, so I don’t see a Lance parallel. Can’t stand that guy.

          • I actually have trouble seeing Tsu-Tsu as a paladin at all. Keith is actually my first favorite paladin, so saying Tsu-Tsu would be Keith is actually a little painful. But he is the closest one, Kyle isn’t broody enough, though he might be after this…

      • Librarican

Or Inspector Gadget…. Go go gadget WATER!

  • Mitch!!!!

  • stickfigurefairytales

Mitch, you stop pretending you’re a phoenix RIGHT NOW, young man!!

    • kuku

      or Icarus

      • stickfigurefairytales

To be fair, Icarus’s story wouldn’t have nearly the same didactic impact if he were just flying around and the sun physically hurled itself at him.

        • stickfigurefairytales

I guess the moral of the story in that case would be “The sun is a dick.”

          • T Dibbler

As an Australian I can confirm that the sun is indeed a dick.

          • Nate

I’m pretty sure that’s also the moral of the Phaethon story….

        • kuku

          True.

  • No no no! Sound the fire bell. RED ALARM!!

    • stickfigurefairytales

Call the po-lice and the fire brigade!

  • Morgan

    Mitch, baby no!!!

  • Sapfo

He got a big foot! You know what they say about people with big feet?…. they got to have big shoes

    • davefragments

And well-painted nails. There must be some foot-slave demons to do that manicure.

      wink, wink

  • davefragments

The colors on this page are gorgeous.
But then, I’m a blue person and not a red person.

    • Curt Clark

I am as well, though TYP’s colors have always been pretty incredible.

    • Madock345

Yeah, that bottom panel feels like such a relief after all the reds and oranges. Those are nice too, but that blue feels so good in contrast.

  • DonnaC

Roll Mitch roll. Tsu can you direct some of that water to put Mitch’s flames out please.

  • stickfigurefairytales

Man, and Spooky just got done healing Mitch from his last injury and plummeting…

  • Pietro7

    Hmmm. Eye healed again?

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Demonic powers, I’m guessing.

  • Jeff Baker

Okay, throw water at him! (Maybe a lot of water! 🙂 )

    • stickfigurefairytales

No wait, judging from Laampros’s beard, this could be a grease fire! You’ve got to smother those instead.

  • davefragments

    BIG ISLAND VIDEO NEWS
has a video of a waterfall of molten, glowing-red lava hitting the ocean.
    http://www.bigislandvideonews.com/2017/02/05/video-lava-fire-hose-returns-after-cliff-collapse/

This might be the explosion from fire versus water

  • Rapiret

I’m super intrigued now. I love that Kyle absorbing Laampy’s power want anywhere near effective. I wonder what Tsunami’s gonna do.

And I’m especially intrigued with what could be next for ol’ Alex when this comic comes to a close. I finished reading Artifice and I can now officially say I am simply a fan of your writing style as a whole so I can’t wait to actually start an adventure with you.

    • Thank you very much, Rapiret! I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying our work! 🙂

  • Kate G

Oh Mitchster. Today is just not your day. First, you have to save your childhood friend from going psycho and save his brother. Then, you get zapped by Shiny Metal Lady in the back. Literally, stabbed in the back via lightning. Then, you get hung up by you arms by the Silver Haired Fox while unconscious. AND then you had to deal with crazy flying demons. AND NOW you get set on fire by your bff’s daddy.

Someone needs to give the Mitchster a break. He needs one. And some coffee. I think he needs a refuel.

    • Juliette Leroux

And a long restful sleep afterward. You know, when they all come back alive from this, in a world free of demons. Let’s visualise that together now and send our positive vibes to them.

      • Kate G

This is true. And a relaxing, warm bath. And chiropractic adjustment and massage.

So, coffee for refuel along with food (we shall go with intermission music. “This is the middle of the movie.” NAME THAT FILM!) Then battle. The chiropractor. Then massage, bath and sleep.

  • Jeldenil

Here’s to hoping the military will bring healers.

    • timemonkey

I doubt it no point bringing a med team to what is supposed to be an air strike.

Unless you meant magical healers in which case the only one is Spooky.

  • *brrrr* …it’s dark, windy and snow outside, and my floor (and apartment) has a cold draft). Trying to take a shower in luke-warm water was not fun. I would use a touch of Laampros’ heat right now *shivers*, but he can keep the burns. I got my own (got small 3.degree burn on my lip during dentist visit yesterday – ouch btw).

    • Jonni

Seriously, ouch. How did that happen?

      • I’m not 100% sure. I’m having a root canal fixed, but it drags out because of continuous infection from root. But at some time they used a small burner – either to stop a blood vessel in the root, or to heat up part of tooth/temporary filling. Whether the burner accidently touched my lip, or if my numb lip touched the burning plastic during a break, I don’t know. Don’t even think the dentist noticed, and I didn’t until I was out of there and licked my lips.

Just know I’m VERY happy my lip was sedated at the times, so the normal most hurting hours, I didn’t feel it at all/much >.>

    • Juliette Leroux

      Augh, I feel for you.

  • jreed3842

    Water forcefield for the win!

    • Madock345

Can Tsu breath underwater? That water bubble move has a lot of potential if so.

  • Oki, time to guess. Who will try to save the day next, and help Tsu-Tsu in the fight while the others are down? (Fluke might be the one who can still stand besides Tsu)

    1: Spooky.
    2: Platinum Priestess.
    3: Duncan.
    4: Military finally shows up.
    5: Other option.

    • Nate

I’m hoping for Spooky to pull a “Spook Phoenix” move, having reached an accord with the souls inside him, much like Hohenheim Elric in FMA.

    • timemonkey

Platinum Priestess won’t be helping. Not only is she stilkl blocked from the area so she wouldn’t be able to get there yet but she wants the demons here for at least a while.

    • Curt Clark

1 or 3 are my bets.

Duncan is way overdue for a return, considering his billing in the comic, even though I don’t know what he could bring to the table now that he’s been depowered.

But Spooky’s been somewhere between sideline civvie-protector and distressed dude for at least two months now, real-time. So he’s ALSO due to get proactive, any day now. Problem is, his involvement would be more tragic than anything, considering that the REASON he hasn’t fought back is that he’s been keeping the civilan souls from the diamond cube from passing on.

      • timemonkey

Well, if Big Red smashes open the diamond box Spooky could put the souls back and he could join the fight.

  • camelotcrusade

I see a lot of stopping, dropping, and rolling out there. Safety first. ⛑️

  • Jonni

Please put the flames out on Mitch, somebody. I don’t want medium-rare Flyboy.

    • Madock345

Yeah, I’d really prefer him to be well coming out of this.

  • T Dibbler

    No! Mitch!

And seriously, I know stopping the world-destroying giant fire demon is the most important thing right now, but if I had water powers and my friend was actively on fire, I wouldn’t be sending my waves at the demon first.

    • Juliette Leroux

      Good point.

    • timemonkey

No point wasting your water putting someone out when the giant fire demon will just light everyone up again. Best to get rid of him first.

      • T Dibbler

It’s also more important to save the world than to temporarily save one person, and getting distracted by trying to help a friend in an active combat situation against such a powerful foe would be unwise, but I really don’t think I could just leave him there on fire and not splash him, if I was in Tsunami’s place. (And as such, part of my brain is disapproving of the fact that Tsu didn’t help him, even while the logical part presents reasons why his choice is the better one)

  • bronakopdin

this is too much for my poor heart T___T
    whoever: pls save them!!!

  • John

Laampy is like “Why are you still here?”

  • Nate

    Fire… meet water.

NOBODY hurts the kids on Gordon’s watch.

(Meanwhile, I’ll be over here, cuddling Mitch.)

  • David Welbourn

First of all, hope Mitch will survive and recover from his second fall from the sky today. I never quite clued in before how often a flying hero is destined to fall and hit the ground.

Second, I hope that this “alone time” between Laampros and Tsunami will lead to a bit of character development for Tsu. Like, it would be really interesting if Laampros read Tsunami’s mind and casually monologued Tsu’s fears and desires out-loud while everyone else is unconscious or too busy trying to get back on their feet to listen properly.

    • Curt Clark

      Character stuff would be great.

But…maybe it’s just me, but I’d be interested in some exposition about Tsu’s powers right about now.

Granted, we don’t know where MOST of TYP’s powers come from — Kyle is half-demon and Spooky’s a wizard trained in Hell, but that’s about it for known origins.

And Tsu in particular REALLY intrigues me. Is his hydrokinesis connected to his tattoos somehow? Is it magical, mutant/metahuman (aka ‘Born This Way’), accidental, some sort of science experiemnt gone kablooie? Is he descended from a water deity on a par with Laampwick? VERY QUESTION. SUCH CURIOUS.

      • Madock345

Maybe he was originally supposed to be descended from Maui, but then Moana happened and fucked that up. XD

  • Juliette Leroux

Tsu, now is your time to shine! Let’s hope somebody (anybody, please?) will come and help you because you’re not going to take old Lamproos down by yourself.

    • Dennis Grace

Yeah, really. Where are all the badass adult superheroes we heard were supposed to be on their way?

      • timemonkey

They never said adult heroes were on their way. The adult heroes are all off world dealing with some crisis, that was the whole reason the YP were dealing with this at all. Amanda has ties to the military and she said it would take at least an hour after she gave them a strike point.

        • Juliette Leroux

I’ve never wished so bad for the military to intervene in a story I think.

  • Mir

Everything changed when the fire nation attacked…

    • So does that make Kyle Prince Zuko?

      • Shadizar Silvermask

        Well he’s certainly been conflicted.

  • Pikinanou

    Go Tsu Tsu!

  • Lyleen

    Whoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  • Earl Patterson

Mitch!!!!! NOoooo dont hurt my favorite mitch!!!

  • Earl Patterson

Wait min.. I though Laampros eye is damaged?

    • Szymon Brycki

Maybe he regenerated it? You know, demonic superpowers or what… 😛

    • Shadizar Silvermask

It is damaged, his left eye is open while the right eye is closed and looks damaged.

      • Earl Patterson

look at image. both eye open

      • Earl Patterson

but earlier it was show two white eye. probably alex noticed and fix then upload image

  • Toli Bera

We have an incredibly nude flame demon, and a hydrokinetic hunk about to duke it out. looks like things are about to get…. steamy.

  • Curt Clark

Things have gotta look as bleak as they can before they can get better; that’s writing climaxes 101.

Still…this is pretty damn bleak. Certainly darker than I ever thought the comic would go, even for the story’s final act. Then again, I also envisioned Duncan having a bigger role in things here at the end, so WTF do I know?

Here’s hoping Gordon’s last stand at least redeems him somewhat as a character.

    • Shadizar Silvermask

Could be an example of the Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work coming up, Duncan having to come in and having to kill Laampros as it’s something as heroes would taint the others, maybe combined with Redemption Equals Death (or could be a twist and go with Redemption Equals Life).

  • Zephyr10101

    🙁

  • Acillus

Nooo, Flyboy! Where is their back-up? I’d like to see Laampros get a couple missile nudges back into his portal right about now!

  • Jason Moon

“That stench of brimstone, that comes from ALL of you, Laampros, not just your honkin’ big foot? Okay. Just checking.”

Seriously, this whole page could be captioned as one big example of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SmellyFeet . Also, you might wanna check out a similar page called http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItTastesLikeFeet .

  • LadyRassberry

Apparently, Tsunami’s water powers are hell-fireproof?

  • Samurai Jack

Hey, Tsunami! You’re friends are burning! A little water right now would go a long way towards maybe making them feel better. Oh, and taking on Laampros alone? Show him who’s boss.

    • timemonkey

      1) If he put them out they’d just get lit up again.
      2. Tsunami has to bring water here from elsewhere so he needs to make good use of what he’s got and not waste it.

      • Samurai Jack

We don’t know that 1) is true. And early on it was established that they’re near a river. But 2) is a valid point, even though I’d still put the well being of the team ahead of a potentially futile battle with Laampros.

        • timemonkey

Laampros is literally spraying them with hellfire over and over. Nobody’s even really in danger right now, even mtch I s just smoldering around the edges.

          • Samurai Jack

Funny how we see this image so differently. That’s not what I see. But that’s ok. I think that’s one of the great things about the comic format.

  • PreludeToA

Has lamp yalways been this huge?!?

    • timemonkey

Not on the original Hell visit but ever since he stepped through the portal.

  • davefragments

John Ferrante, a counter tenor, teamed up with Peter Schickele to perform PDQ Bach’s magnificent cantata — Iphigenia in Brooklyn.
As opposed to the bargain-basement counter tenor who is a contralto
It is a stunning masterpiece of the baroque era
(I rolled my eyes at that last sentence)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLvCVRuZZgY

    • Steven K.

Love that piece – and love countertenors. Thanks for posting!

      • davefragments

There’s only one counter-tenor and that’s John Ferrante.
As you listen and hear the high soprano notes, it’s Ferrante.

BTW – I saw PDQ Bach in 1991 with the Pittsburgh Symphony. They did Beethoven’s 5th as a sporting event.

  • annihilator could get his powers back (the “kids” weren’t relieved of theirs for too long) Sircea’s out, but does spooky’s seal outlast his ability to hold it? (is it a cast and it stays cast, or does it require the concentration of the caster?)

aaaaaand then there’s… if laampros is weak enough and can be shoved hard enough…. GO FOR IT TSUNAMI!!!!!

(there’s probably more than that 😉 but those are the threads i remember right now 😉 eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee 🙂 )

    • all Tsu has to do is shove him back through the portal…. 😀

      • Pietro7

Why yes, merely that. Piece of cake. Easy as pie. He’s only a King of Hell with who knows how many thousands of years of tricks up his non-existent sleeve . . . (shudder)
