The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 25

162 Comments on The Young Protectors: Engaging The Enemy Chapter 5—Page 25

Go, Kyle, go!

So! Laampros is all, like, “You can’t handle my power” and Kyle is all, like, “Don’t care! Delete your account!” And now our hero is acting like some demon-boy syphon and trying to send his father’s power into the Great Beyond.

Will he be able to drain all of his father’s strength before it consumes him?

Tune in this Saturday to find out! Hope to see you there! 😀

  • Danny

    Woah! Go Kyle!

  • Nate

    Yay, Kyle!

  • ^_^

  • heh Mitch

    • stickfigurefairytales

      Tiny zoom-y Mitch.

    • davefragments

winged demons crashing into the ground

      • Just look at that debris from them hitting the ground. ^_^ That’s my Mitch!

        • Saxon_Brenton

Commander told him to keep the demons from having control of the air. This is what he’s doing.
He’s not going to let himself be in the position of having Commander look at him and snark , “You had just one job to do, Flyboy…”

  • davefragments

    I love it. Kyle smash!

  • Oh Kyle. *clapping frantically in belief*

    • Michael

“I do believe in Kyle! I do believe in Kyle!”

  • Nate

Can I just say that panel 4 has the best smirk I’ve seen in a comic in a long time?

    • Danny

Agreed. His words sound so noble, but that smirk says, “If I go down, at least I’m dragging you with me!” It’s perfect. The artists and Alex do such a great job on all the little details.

  • Panel 2 & 4. Especially panel 4!! *fans self over Kyle*

    • D. G.

      He is kinda sexy there.

  • stickfigurefairytales

    Go Kyle, but don’t die!!!

  • Michael

Ah, the Noble Self Sacrifice. How I love you so 🙂

  • davefragments

I wanna see “Gate go boom” …

  • Saxon_Brenton

So, this seems to be an akido maneouvre, using an opponents strength against them.

    • That sounds familiar. Where is it from?

      • Saxon_Brenton

Aikido’s a real-life martial art, with an emphasis on redirecting momentum of attacks and using an opponents strength against them.
I know I would have encountered it in pop culture when I was a kid back in the 1970s because of the endless repeats of Dr Who that we had on Australian tv (One of the 3rd Doctor’s schticks was his use of Venusian aikido). That was so long ago that there are possibly other, more recent examples that you may be thinking of, but I couldn’t begin to guess what they are.

        • Maybe not. I have heard of it as just one of the ‘Do’s’. But for how you first said it, I thought of Star Trek and that it was some kind of star ship maneuver to either attack or evade. 🙂 But it didn’t sound that correct, so I asked you to make sure. 😀

  • Songbird

I want a fan art poster of Kyle telling Laampros to delete his account. Naow.

  • jreed3842

    Damn! Get it Kyle!

  • Demonic Kyle is demonic. That’s some scary smile.

    • Morgan

      Indeed. I love it.

  • Sapfo

This is really turning into a greek legend, where sons defeats their fathers. Kyle, do it like Zeus did it, and you should be oki.

    • stickfigurefairytales

What, dress up like a lady and slip him an ipecac?

      • Sapfo

        It could work XD

  • Morgan

Kyle, you clever thing. I’m so proud.

…Also damn boy, the demon look suits you.

  • Brian Hopkins

Love the changes in Lampy’s demeanor. Now I hear last time’s “What are you doing?” as mild curiosity, this “STILL you resist” as an affable “kids today!” that calls for more explanation, finally to a legitimately worried look in the last panel.

  • Zephyr10101

OK Kyle. Think about what you’re doing tho

  • camelotcrusade

Off panel thought bubble at the end:
… “And I’m keeping the ears. Cosplay boys go wild for them.”

  • Neceros

Okay, but here’s the real question: If Kyle drains all of Laampy’s fire, what’s going to censor his nether regions?

    • The shadowloins have great power on their own 😉

      • Pietro7

All behold the awesome power of Shadowloins.
Wait, that didn’t quite come out right . . .

  • joshsusser

Alright… Kyle is siphoning off Laampros’ power and releasing it into the wild. How much power does Laampros embody? Could this fix Sircea’s problem with magic power availability? Would it change the nature of magic on Earth? Or is Kyle just going to accelerate global warming releasing all that heat into the atmosphere?

    • davefragments

Go back to panel two of ch5 p8
and you can see that Kyle is aiming at the portal behind Laampros.
He’s aiming to destroy the portal or at least weaken it so Laampros has to use power to keep it open.

  • Jeff Baker

Smart thinking, Kyle! (Hmmmm….he’s too young to have read “Hot Stuff” when he was a kid, huh? 🙂 )

  • David Welbourn

This is great. This actually has a chance of working as long as Laampros just keeps standing there like a Laamppost.

    • Madock345

      Best pun

      • Juliette Leroux

        • El Chupacabre

          Thirded, you should be proud

    • Hamish C

this has to be *the* comment of the day, surely

  • Madock345

Goddamn these are some pretty colors.

    Kyle is a sexy badass

Laampros made a big mistake in letting that slip

Love the fire effects, awesome shapes and lines

    that is all

  • Jeldenil

Panel 5 Kyle uses demon grammar. It’s super effective.

  • TwilightDreamer

You go Kyle!!! *dances around room cheering*
    …..but, in saying that…..PLEASE DON’T DIE!!! DX

  • Shiny Gwilly

“delete your account”, i laughed so hard at that
i love this page, so much pretty fire and Kyle showing off
i like how demon daddy hasn’t been taking this whole thing seriously, in terms of typ stopping him, just all “lol, look at you mortals try” and all that
but within these last 2 pages, his expression has been changing to actual worry, he’s now starting to think “oh, they’re actually kinda stopping me, i didn’t expect this”

  • Aitsuki

Now THAT is an awesome twist.

  • Taddy

Loving this, just a little weirded out with Kyle’s fingers. Previous panels showed he has long black nails that tore through his costume. Is his skin starting to go red like Lampy’s? o_O

Cause atm they kind of look like Venom or Carnage fingers.

  • bronakopdin

I’m so proud of Kyle to keep his head even though it must be “hella” painful x3

    on a sidenote: @alexwoolfson:disqus
In the 4th panel, is it possible there is a little mistake?
I feel like it should be either “It’s your power that‘s/is keeping all this going, right?”
or well maybe “It’s your power that keeps all this going, right?”

But it might just be me, as I’m no native x’D maybe it’s just a form of slang?

    • Klaus

The boy is in serious pain. You can’t expect perfect grammer.

      • bronakopdin

And well I think it was really just a mistake ^^’
If Alex wanted to show us that Kyle’s speech is in any way affected he’d have done so in a more obvious way than leaving out a small word/using one wrong verbform
also this is obviously no criticism but rather a hint so it can be corrected for the print/digital publication 🙂

        • Klaus

    • El Chupacabre

I’m so proud of you for making that pun

  • Juliette Leroux

Well, Kyle was already heroic before, but this fight has clearly enhanced his cleverness. You go Kyle! And please try not to die. We don’t have so many gay redheaded demonic superheroes to spare.

  • Mary Klemzak

    Hnnnggg! Go Kyle!

  • Jonni

Heroes don’t let the bad guys win

  • “I don’t need to be a better monster than you to take you down, Dad. I just need to be a better person than you.”

  • John

I know this is all really important plot development stuff, but I can’t help but focus and giggle at the face-planting winged demons in the background of box 1!

Side-note; I adore the lack of symmetry for Kyle’s mask on that close up. Really nice touch.

  • strangeangel24601

    DAH! Long creepy fingers! *shudders*

  • Stubbylegs

Love the strategically placed dialogue bubble in the last panel, lol.

  • Tristan Black Wolf

So okay, I was -half- right, LOL! I was imagining a twist like David Cronenberg’s “Scanners,” but instead, our fiery young lad is doing to Laampros what my fianceé did to me when she got her hooks in my bank accounts. (And you wonder why I’m gay?) :p

    Well played, all.

    • JepMZ

Oh my god…. I’m sorry you got gas lighted like that

      • Tristan Black Wolf

Thank you. FWIW, I’m very much tongue-in-cheek about my comment. Yes, I’m gay, but not because one woman treated me so badly! And hey, better to find out before a marriage than after. ^_^

  • Geneva150

Nice to see I was wrong! Glad Kyle isn’t going bad/evil/crazy because for a moment there I wasn’t sure! He probably needs to stop announcing his plans to his Dad though…

  • SchalaRenee

Evil Kyle was kinda hot…literally and figuratively…too bad we don’t get more evil Kyle. Still, good to see he isn’t abandoning his friends. Maybe he’ll survive it AND get a super powered demon side! As a reward for vanquishing daddy. And maybe he’ll finally have control over his fire completely, letting him and Spooky have sex. Or not, depending on if part of him still loves Anni. I do ship him and Spooky so hard now, though. Sooo cute.

  • Will Parkinson

Panel four: Evil Kyle is horny.

  • Nexus Saberfang (N-Darkstriker

I don’t think he would let his son Be killed Deamon or not he still cares

    • Curt Clark

Eh, Rebellion is rebellion, no matter who it’s from. Demon pecking-order BS trumps family relations.

      • El Chupacabre

I’m inclined to think Laampros cares about whatever use he had in mind for Kyle. Once Kyle proves he isn’t useful, I bet things take a sharp turn for the violence.

  • Rodrigo Campanaro

    Azarath Metrion Zinthos!!!!

  • Terry

Ok, prediction time! Kyle will succeed, of course, in weakening his father enough so that the others can shove him back through the portal and save the day. Kyle WILL survive, but absorbing his father’s fire will burn out (pun intended) his powers. He will no longer be able to generate or absorb fire and will be for all intents and purposes, a normal human. He will no longer be a super hero, but he will be able to have a healthy sexual relationship with young, powerless Ani. Not exactly the ending that I would be rooting for, but I think it is an ending that fits.

    • davefragments

Maybe sealing off the dimensions will destroy all magic?

    • azoreseuropa

Nah.. it might transform him to a brand new power super hero. He will remain a super human and not a normal human.

    • Klaus

This is the tale fo how Kyle became one of the most powerful champions the world has known. That was the Kickstarer blurp.

      • FellowTraveler

I, too, stare at the soccer/footballers with a hint of drool at the corner of my mouth. I, too, am a Kickstarer.

      • Terry

That doesn’t actually disprove the theory. I would say that saving the world from demonic rule and defeating his father may very well make him one of the most powerful champions in the world. What happens after that…

    • Curt Clark

He is Fire! And Hell Incarnate! Now and forever, He…Is…RED-HOT!!!

    • JepMZ

I’m not serious, but what if instead of surviving, Kyle dissolves into the fire element. And Anni cries so much that Platinum Priestess decides to help him out. And figured out they can summon Kyle’s fire back by hot woohooing. And Spook volunteers and so Anni and spook set up a lemon party. The action was so intense that they created fire between them and suddenly they create a Kyle sandwich. The end!

  • Raymond Saint-Pierre

    • Klaus

  • D. G.

Spooky is like: “its getting hot in here. Let’s take out all those souls.”

    • Curt Clark

Now that song is in my head. I BLAME YOU.

      • D. G.

You should THANK ME. Its a kinda cool song if ur in the right mood. Besides, there are worse songs to have on replay.

  • D. G.

I would think Laampros could stop the power transfer at any time. He is King of Hell. And master of his own powers.

    • Klaus

      Evidently not.

    • motordog

Perhaps…but he’s not IN Hell, is he…he’s in the mortal realm. He also opened himself up, so to speak, to let Kyle absorb his flames. You shouldn’t invite the fox into the henhouse, don’t you know.

      • Juliette Leroux

The idea of Lamproos as a hen is a bit disturbing…

  • Jason Moon

“It’s all about purity of essence, Mandrake!”

  • timemonkey

Redirecting attacks is hardly new or unique to AtlA.

    • endymion

Of course not, but the way and pose in which it’s done looks like it. At least to me.

      • Curt Clark

I’m remembering Bishop, from the X-Men (and in a different fashion but the same basic principle, Rogue). This was pretty much his thing ever since the early 90s.

  • timemonkey

An excellent strategy, if you can’t power up then weakening the enemy is just as good.

  • somebody

I really like his claw hands, they look super cool
also that evil smirk suits him~
he’d make a good villain, but I think I prefer him as the good guy he is 🙂
    go go kyle!

  • Curt Clark

It would be nice if he could put that extra power to some kind of use, but the plan is already pretty amazing as-is.

If self-sacrificial… ;_; Kyle’s really showing his stripes here, and I love him for it.

  • wohdin

oh hey look, it’s the Kill Your Gays trope

    • davefragments

We had a mild discussion of that on the previous page:

That link will show you the entire comment thread.

    • motordog

The fight’s not over yet…we’ll have to wait and see.

    • timemonkey

No, this is called dramtic tension. The threat of death to increase the tension of the scene. Nobody’s actually died yet.

    • Madock345

Don’t think it counts when half the cast is gay. More than half. I think everyone but Tsunami. Probably him too.

      • Gay or bi, but yes, half the cast isn’t straight.

      • Klaus

        Paul is straight. Entirely straight.

  • Pinkfeiry

i bet Laampros is all: son, you dare BETRAY ME?!

  • ChibE

Come on, Saturday! I need to know what happens next. I bet Lampy threatens Spooky.

  • Juliette Leroux

    Well, THAT’s an interresting question!

  • Pietro7

Y’know, I don ‘t think daddy Laampros is happy about Kyle’s plan.
Now would a King of Hell have a trick up his sleeve for this situation?
Maybe if he had worn sleeves today . . .

    • timemonkey

Well, wearing a shirt without pants is just awkward….or sexy. Neither good choices when making an impression on your son and his pets.

      • Pietro7

        Point! 🙂

  • Kate G

Hm, ShadowLoins™ are fueled by the magic eaten by sugar babies. *snickers*

No, no, I don’t know. But it’s the hilarious thought that counts. XD

  • davefragments

    Hi Campers,
It’s update TYP night. Spartacus repeat night. Raspberry Gelato night (want some). And whatever else happened today, I’m ignoring tonight.
For tonight we are going to see Laampros have a real fit as his portal starts to crack.

    • Pietro7

      Mmmmmm, raspberry gelato . . . . with Linz dark chocolate bars . . . . mmmmmm.

      • davefragments

        Have some with complements

      • Morgan

    • Morgan

Can’t wait. Looking forward to seeing that smug bastard sent back to hell.

      • davefragments

        So do I.

  • davefragments

BTW – can anyone get in contact with stickfigurefairytales ? ?
My Niece is going to the March tomorrow and I would like to let her know.

    • I am unsure if she is going to be online to see any messages from me.

      • davefragments

      • davefragments

I tried to text my niece and the network failed to deliver the text.
I guess that everyone in Washington DC is texting all their relatives and that overloads the network.

      • davefragments

Two texts failed and I finally got through to my Niece last in the afternoon near suppertime. It took her bunch an hour to get through the METRO and then to their bus. But she loved it. She’s thrilled.
She asked me Friday Morning if she should go and I told her that if she thought she would regret not going, then do it. Like I said, she’s out-of-this-world thrilled. I’m glad she got to go. Too many people in life don’t do something because of “family” or “Friends” or whatever. This she can be proud of and gain strength from.
        I’m happy tonight.

  • Morgan

Hi campers! How are we today?

    • davefragments

It’s an unseasonably warm night and I’m still cold.

      • Morgan

I’m sorry… But hey, is update night!

      • I’m kicking myself for wanting all that rain. We’re a bit under water again. We seem to get a week off and then more rain (my pup was going mud whomping). Lots of snow pack too–though I’m glad I’m not in the snow. A little is fine, several feet, no thank you.

        • davefragments

There’s a river of water vapor above central and southern California that is five times the size of the Mississippi River. The California drought is over. It seems.

          • For a good portion of it, yes. There are still some areas that need filling up, but I don’t doubt that it’ll happen.

          • davefragments

California is turning wet. The midwest is getting colder and Pittsburgh to the northeast is getting warmer.
What can I say. That’s what the meteorologists tell me.

          • davefragments

turning, turning, not trying (damn spellcheck)

          • I can remember when California tried to drown itself back in the 90’s. We just moved to our ranch. Trying to keep it from washing away was a lot of work.

          • davefragments

I barely understand enough meteorology to complain about tomorrow’s weather. I do know that I had to send someone onto my room to clean the gutters from leaves and twigs because it’s in the high 40’s and low 50’s outside and it’s the end of January.

          • Huh, we’re having the same temps. Although we were getting frost for a couple of days, but nothing too far beneath 30

          • davefragments

Last year this time was below freezing with lots of snow. I’m glad for the lack of snow when I drive but these weather patterns are crazy

  • ‘Morning from the dark and foggy part of Denmark *yaawns*

I shouldn’t stay up late and watch horror movies when I know I get up early for campings 😉

    • davefragments

      Hi there

      • Hiya. I’m just crashing here xD

        • davefragments

I’m shivering tonight. It’s 75 degrees in my house and I’m shivering. Curses! Curses! Curses!

    • Morning Ms. Wolf.

      • Too early morning this time. Why do the interesting movies almost always come on tv late on fridays? I even had to skip two earlier this night, because they came at samw time as the one I saw, or later.

  • davefragments

I watched THE ACCOUNTANT with Ben Affleck.
It’s a very good story, well written, well acted by all, and complex. Unexpected.
It is violent, however, so take note.

    • We watched that last weekend. It was pretty damn good. Surprisingly good. As soon as it’s in the cheap bin, my mom wants to buy it.

      • davefragments

I had just watched “CRIMINAL” with Costner and it was so predictable and typical. THE ACCOUNTANT wasn’t.

        • Latest new movie I watched was Sing. Cute animation movie. Not a masterpiece, but you’re well entertained and the music is good.

Next cinema movie for me will be Moana in about 2 weeks. Because the new Disney movie is (annoyingly) being postponed to February, to fit the Danish schools’ winter vacation, Denmark has been some of the last to get to see the movies – for the last 5ish years.
Damn annoying that Danish movie destributors have decided to do this for years, for the Disney movie that premiers around Nov./Dec.

          • davefragments

I plan to see SING. The previews were hysterical.
            I’m undecided about MOANA.

NOW YOU SEE ME 2 — disappointed me.

          • Michael

Moana is awesome and amazing and you have to see it if you like Disney movies.

It doesn’t even have a stereotypical romance, damsel-in-distress or anything like that. Moana is an awesome character, and Maui’s relationship with her is really convincingly elder-siblingish.

            Plus the songs are amazing.

Also it even makes fun of itself and other Disney movies, and breaks the 4th wall a few times. Basically it’s really really enjoyable.

          • davefragments

            Thanks. I appreciate your words.

          • Knowing it’s called Moana, it feels so weird sometimes having to call it Vaiana to Danish people. Vaiana is the name it has in Europe, due to copyright on the name Moana in EU.

Just like Zootopia is Zootropolis in Europe. That reason there is actually because of a Danish copyright issue. A new huge zoo-park is being build here, named Zootopia, so name couldn’t be used.

        • My parents watched Criminal. I opted out of that one.

I’m looking forward to Dr. Strange coming out. Saw that in the theater a couple weeks ago. Fun movie, the ending was a bit abrupt, but the two end credit scenes were good.

          • davefragments

I missed Dr Strange. That’s when Pittsburgh had it’s below zero weather. It’s still on my Cable’s “Pre-order to buy” list and I won’t pay that much money to those thieves

          • We caught it in it’s last week or so in the theater. We then saw Rogue One. I wish I had waited for it on video. Good movie but dark and sad.

          • I actually really loved the ending.

I am glad we never see them kiss. Especially at the end.

I cry for SpiritAssassin. They were so adorable!

Vader is such the Drama King. ^_^

          • I was glad to not see them kiss too.

          • Dr. Strange is good. It was nearly mindblowing seeing it in 3D in cinema. The graphics and special effects are a trip.

          • davefragments

3D hurts my eyes thanks to the glasses I already wear. I tend to avoid it.

          • Too bad. I also use glasses, but the 3D glasses in my local cinema fits around it. The old 3D gave me headache, but the new kind where it’s not red/blue glasses makes me able to watch.

  • Michael

Update day! At least there’s something to look forward to about this weekend…
